US, PHL start naval drills near Chinaclaimed waters SUBIC BAY, June 26, 2014 (AFP) – The United States and the Philippines kicked off joint naval exercises Thursday in the South China Sea near waters claimed by Beijing, amid tense territorial rows between China and its neighbors. Filipino military officials said the week-long maneuvers, involving three US warships and more than a thousand servicemen, would address Manila’s “capability gaps” as well as testing its newest military vessels. The Philippines is engaged in a bitter territorial dispute with China over parts of the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost in its entirety. China has increasingly asserted its claims to the sea, which are believed to harbor vast oil and gas deposits, and parts of which are also claimed by Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. Beijing placed an oil rig in disputed waters last month, sparking deadly anti-China riots in Vietnam. Philippine officers said the annual war games, involving more than a thousand US personnel and about 400 Filipino counterparts, would test the Philippines’ two newest warships – a pair of decom-

missioned US coastguard cutters that were reconfigured into frigates. “We committed two of our relatively new ships to participate in this exercise because we really wanted these ships to become proficient in what they do,” fleet commander Jaime Bernardino told reporters. “We wanted them to become proficient in firing their guns and all the things they do on the ground.” He added that the Philippines’ territorial waters are “very porous” to foreign vessels. “These are the gaps that we would like to address – make sure we detect (foreign vessels) properly, we intercept them and we neutralize them if necessary.” But he added that simulated boardings being carried out as part of the exercises have not been planned with any specific country in mind. Two warships were docked at Subic Bay for the drills – a few hours’ sailing distance from Scarborough Shoal, a South China Sea outcrop that was effectively taken over by China after a tense stand-off with the Philippines in 2012. Bong Revilla’s lawyer: Revised plunder raps meant to make Napoles state witness MANILA, June 26 (Mabuhay) – The prosecutor sought to amend the plunder charge of Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. to make alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles a state witness against the senator, Revilla’s lawyer said. Atty. Joel Bodegon told reporters on Thursday that the prosecutor wanted to make Revilla the mastermind of the scam instead of Napoles by amending the charge sheet. “It is meant to justify that Napoles is not most guilty so that she can be state witness,” Bodegon said in Filipino. Bodegon made the statement after Revilla refused to enter any plea over his plunder and graft charges before the Sandiganbayan. The anti-graft court also junked the special prosecutors’ motion for the court to admit the amended plunder information

of Revilla. Bodegon said that the prosecution’s move is a “judicial admission that they have no case against Revilla.” In the amended information, the special prosecutor under the Ombudsman wants to amend the information to say alleged mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles and her cohorts are “private individuals” who collaborated with the senators in amassing ill-gotten wealth. They also would like to delete the phrase in the case that states: “enabling Napoles to misappropriate the Priority Development Assistance Funds (PDAF) proceeds for her personal gain.” The prosecutor said they amended the case information “to emphasize that the senator was the one who amassed, accumulated and acquired ill-gotten wealth See REVISED, page 6

Sending children illegally into US pointless: official LOS ANGELES, June 26, 2014 (AFP) – The United States Thursday warned Central American families to stop sending their unaccompanied children across the Mexican border into the United States, calling the trip dangerous and pointless. These children will not be granted residency, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said in Nogales, Arizona as he visited a detention center housing 900 minors who came to America alone. “This journey is a dangerous one and at the end of it there’s no free pass. There are no ‘permisos’ for your children who come to the US,” Johnson said, referring to the coveted residency permits that are hoped See CHILDREN, page 6

46th pick Fil-Am Jordan Clarkson to play for Los Angeles Lakers A Filipino-American who played for the University of Missouri Tigers in the NCAA has been selected to play in the NBA and will go to Los Angeles Lakers after Thursday’s NBA Draft. Jordan Clarkson, whose mother is a Filipina, was first taken by the Washington Wizards as their 46th pick but traded to the Lakers for cash considerations. Reports said Clarkson is a standout for the Mizzou Tigers, averaging 17.5 points,

3.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists in the tough SEC NCAA Division I. The Philippine national team has been scouting Clarkson, but FIBA rules disqualify him to play for the Philippine flag because he didn’t choose to become a naturalized Filipino before turning 16, according to reports citing national coach Chot Reyes. The national squad, however, is boosted by an excellent NBA player in the person of Andray Blatche of the Brooklyn Nets whose

Filipino citizenship was approved through a Senate resolution. Clarkson will join Julius Randle with the Lakers. Randle played prominently in the March Madness, powering the Wildcats over top seed Florida in the SEC tourney. Meanwhile, one of the Philippines’ wealthiest tycoons plans to fly in four American NBA stars for a tune-up game with the national team ahead of the counSee NBA STARS, page 6

Pinay dies in Australia using cheap USB charger SYDNEY, June 27, 2014 (AFP) – Australian authorities issued a warning about cheap, non-compliant USB-style chargers Friday after a young woman died from apparent electrocution while using a laptop and possibly a smart phone. The 28-year-old was found wearing headphones and with her computer in her lap with burns on her chest and ears at a home in Gosford, north of Sydney, in April. Police are still investigating the circumstances of the death but the Department of Fair Trading, which has assisted with the case, suggested a sub-standard mobile phone charger could be to blame. The woman, whom reports said was from the Philippines but had recently become an Australian citizen, had headphones plugged into her laptop, which was connected to a power socket to charge. “The phone was also plugged into a USB-style charger. That charger had failed,” Lynelle Collins from the New South Wales Department of Fair Trading told AFP. “Somehow power from that charger has connected to her body. Whether she had it

(the phone) to her ear or was holding it in her hand, we don’t know.” Collins said ideally people should avoid using their mobile phones while the devices were charging, but in any case they should avoid non-approved chargers. “We are trying to alert people to the concern that sometimes when you buy really cheap chargers, they aren’t compliant with... (safety) standards,” she said. Fair Trading said it had removed a number of unapproved and non-compliant USB-style chargers, travel adaptors and power boards from sale in Sydney after the death. They said the devices did not meet essential safety requirements and were often made of inferior plastics and other insulation materials. “These devices pose a serious risk of electrocution or fire,” Fair Trading commissioner Rod Stowe said in a statement. Maximum penalties for selling devices that fail Australian standards are Aus$87,500 (US$82,500) and/or two years imprisonment for an individual and a Aus$875,000 fine for a corporation.

Plot to oust Erap as mayor rumor spreads MANILA, June 25 (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Wednesday denied any plan to oust Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, who is facing a disqualification case, from office. “We would like to assure Mayor Estrada and with all due respect to whatever was mentioned to him or confided to him by his allies, we have no plan to eliminate Mayor Estrada,” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said during a press briefing. He added that they “certainly do not know the basis of those allegations.” Lacierda was responding to queries regarding reports reaching Estrada, a former President who was ousted in 2000 following allegations of corruption, that the Aquino administration is planning to use the disqualification case pending before the Supreme Court to remove him from office. The complainant in the disqualification case, Alicia Risos-Vidal, argued in her petition that in the pardon granted to Estrada in 2007 weeks after he was found guilty of plunder by the Sandiganbayan, there was a “whereas” clause stating that “Whereas, Joseph Ejercito Estrada has publicly committed to no longer seek any elective position or office.” Lacierda, however, said they have always “maintained a distance” from the Supreme Court, where the case is currently pending. “So I don’t know why they are now alluding to our involvement when we don’t even know the proceedings that are happening before the Supreme Court in respect [to] the disqualification case against Mayor Estrada,” he said. He also said that the relationship between the Estradas and Aquinos has always been good. “There have been no instances of acrimony between the two families or between the two Presidents,” he added. Malacañang had already belied any “systematic plan” to bring down the opposition following the issuance of arrest orders against two opposition senators, Estrada’s son Sen. Jinggoy Estrada and Sen. Ramon Bong Revilla Jr., and the ouster of Estrada’s nephew, ER Ejercito, as Laguna governor. On Wednesday, Lacierda said Ejercito’s case was tried by the Commission on Elections, a body independent from the executive branch. Similarly, he said the case against Jinggoy stemmed from the investigation of the Commission on Audit, another agency independent from the executive.

Palace: Aquino not trying to sway court on Enrile treatment MANILA, June 26 (Mabuhay) -- A Malacañang spokesperson on Thursday maintained that President Benigno Aquino III is not trying to influence the Sandiganbayan on how to treat embattled Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, who is facing plunder and graft charges in connection with the alleged P10-billion pork barrel scam. “Malinaw sa pahayag ng Pangulo na ipinapaubaya sa hukuman ang pasya kung saan maaring i-detine si Sen. Enrile,” Presidential Communications Operations Office head Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a statement. Coloma was responding to Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption founding chair Dante Jimenez, who claimed the President could be held liable for “influence-peddling” since the Sandiganbayan is still in the process of determining probable cause in Enrile’s case. Jimenez was referring to Aquino’s

earlier statement that the court should consider the age and frail health of Enrile in determining where he will be detained once a warrant of arrest is issued against him. Coloma, however, said the President was just asking the court to take into consideration the senator’s physical condition. “Hindi ito maaring maituturing na iniimpluwensya ng Pangulo ang sinuman,” he said. Enrile is facing one count of plunder and 15 counts of graft. He and his co-accused are alleged to have amassed P172.8 million in kickbacks from 2004 to 2010 through the pork barrel scam. He is facing plunder and graft charges for allegedly diverting his Priority Development Assistance Fund allocations to fake NGOs put up by businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles in exchange for kickbacks. Bongbong Marcos: I will be a candidate in 2016 MANILA, June 26 (Mabuhay) – Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is keeping his options open in the 2016 elections, saying he will be a candidate in the coming polls. Marcos, son and namesake of the late President Ferdinand Marcos, said running for higher office is still far from his mind. “Hindi pa panahon para pag-isipan ang mga ganyan. There are two years left in this term. There is so much work to be done. Siguro saka na muna ‘yun because that is an individual personal thing e. Saka na muna ‘yung mga tungkol sa sarili namin. Tapusin muna namin ang mga kailangan gawin. There is a lot that needs to be done for the remainder of the year… There is no time or there is no space in our working

lives to be, at least in mine, to be discussing that or to be planning that or to be campaigning,” he said. Marcos’ term will expire in 2016 and is eligible to run for reelection. For now, he said, he is keeping his options open. “Of course, when 2016 comes, I will be a candidate. The obvious thing for me to do is to run for reelection. Nababanggit ang higher office but as I said, hindi pa naman panahon para pag-usapan ‘yan because as I said, masyado pang maraming kailangan gawin.” Former First Lady and now Ilocos Norte Congresswoman Imelda Marcos earlier revealed she wants her son to run for president in 2016.

Family in MAVNI We’ve heard that the family that prays together stays together. But for the Abrina family, particularly for brother Manuel and sister Patricia, the family that enlists in the MAVNI together, enters the U.S. Army together. “First reason was because of college benefits you get from the Army. We don’t have enough money to constantly pay for school. Especially if I went to the University, the Army will pay for my tuition fee; and I’m excited to continue my schooling, said Manuel Abrina who enlisted in the Army through the MAVNI program MAVNI stands for Military Accessions Vital to National Interest. According to Staff Sergeant Yu Rhee, it is a program for people who have certain cultural and language skills. The U.S. Army wants to reflect the community they serve; so they want representations from the different diverse markets and ethnic groups in the community. Filipinos are one group that qualifies for this program, especially those who can speak Tagalog and other Filipino dialects. And one big benefit from this program is expedited American citizenship. Although that’s not what Patricia is after. She enlisted after her brother, for the same reason he did: “We are four kids in the family and I didn’t want to burden my parents with college fund; so I think joining the Army will help lessen that burden, she said. Manuel added that aside from education, the Army also provides opportunities for travel: “I know being deployed is not the only way you can travel because there are stations outside America that you could get stationed – Korea or Germany, perhaps. Hopefully I get to go somewhere like that, he said. Despite the benefits, Manuel and Patricia’s Filipino parents had apprehensions

about their son and daughter joining the Army. “My mom was ok. My dad and grandma were against it. They asked me on the phone over and over, again and again, if this is really what I want to do. I told them ‘Yes, this is what I want.’ I guess whatever happens, happens for a reason; but this is what I want to do, Patricia said. “First they didn’t like it. My dad told me that if I ever join the Army, I need to make sure I get an easy job, a desk job. But I decided to join because I want to do the job that I want, said Manuel who is looking to qualify for a job that supports the infantry. Manuel added that he convinced his parents by discussing the advantages and disadvantages in enlisting: “In the end, there are more benefits than the downside. They give you money for school, health insurance, dental insurance. It’s a job so they pay you money; yet there’s not much you pay for while you’re in the Army. They even provide a place to stay. And though their other family members are leery, brother and sister are in full support of each other. “When my brother joined, I wasn’t surprised. He was always a strong person. I have no doubt he could tough it out, Patricia said. “I’m proud of her, Manuel responded. “You shouldn’t be hampered based on your gender. cBoth are now getting ready to train with the U.S. Army, convinced that enlisting is the best thing they can do for themselves and for their future right now. “I want to be more than what I can be. I want to be independent and stand on my own, Patricia concluded. For more information about the MAVNI program or enlisting in the U.S. Army, visit www.goarmy.com.

MANILA, June 26 (Mabuhay) – Four of the 21 refurbished UH-IH “Huey combat utility helicopters, acquired to beef up the Philippine Air Force, are now in Clark Field, Pampanga and being assembled, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said on Thursday. bHe also stated that they are hoping that the assembly of the four helicopters will be completed in time for the PAF’s 67th founding anniversary this July 1. Another three is en-route and expected

to arrive before the end of July. Gazmin expects the remaining 14 to arrive before the end of 2014. Sources said these planes were acquired as the PAF’s “Huey fleet was whittled down to just 18 helicopters, from an estimated 100, due to airframe aging and accidents. The contract for the 21 refurbished UH1Hs is estimated to be worth over Php1 billion. (MNS)

Alcala explains increase in rice prices MANILA, June 26 (Mabuhay) – Why are local rice prices going up? According to Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, there is nothing unusual with the recent increase in the price of commercial rice because millers bought palay from local farmers at higher prices during the dry season. The agriculture chief said farmers earn more when the price of well-milled rice increases. “Mahal din po ang bili ng mga mill sa mga magsasaka. First time po na pinakamahal na ganito dahil actually, ‘yung pamimili din po nila, dahil din po sa dry season crop. Kapag dry season crop, talaga pong premium ‘yung bigas,” Alcala said.

He said the goal is to fight gang violence fueling much of the flight and to spur economic development so people have more of an incentive to stay home and also deal with children who are deported. The United States says such gang violence – rampant in Central America – is at the heart of a surge in unaccompanied children crossing the border from Mexico into the US, mainly through the borders with Arizona and Texas. US media have reported some of the

kids are as young as four or five, some of them having to appear before a judge. From October of last year through June of this year, some 52,000 unaccompanied minors entered the United States. That was double the number from October 2012 through the end of 2013. Arizona’s Republican governor Jan Brewer urged the government of President Barack Obama to tighten border security. “It’s the problem that we have been facing for years now,” she said, according to the newspaper Nogales International. Detention centers for these children are packed, so authorities want streamlined procedures for deporting them.

ANGELES, June 26, 2014 (AFP) – When the last US ship pulled out of the Philippines’ Subic naval base more than two decades ago, a desperate young woman’s hopes of finding her father sailed away with it. Beirut Calaguas, now 44, is among the tens of thousands of “Amerasians” fathered by US soldiers who served in the Philippines, home to the US military’s biggest overseas bases until they closed down in 1992. Like so many others, Calaguas has endured a life of discrimination and poverty, while battling the mental trauma of having been abandoned and not knowing either of her biological parents. “When the Americans left, my heart broke, I resigned my fate to never finding my father,” said the fair-skinned, brown-eyed Calaguas at her ramshackle home in a rundown suburb close to the former US bases.

A tour of Malacañang Museum, an audience and a photo session with President Benigno Aquino III, and lunch at the historic Heroes Hall of the Palace will highlight the four-day tour.

For Filipino-Americans who have not been to the country in a long time, being part of the ACGTDT is the best option to revisit the homeland and experience the many exciting and amazing changes in the Philippines and discover the beauty of the country’s top tourist destinations – like Boracay, Palawan, and Banaue – that have been making headlines across the world and attracting millions of foreign tourists. For many, however, the many sights, sounds, thrills and adventures that await not only in Manila but also in the countryside are magnets that draw them to have a memorable, thrilling and once-ina-lifetime FUN experience in Philippines! (Manny V. Ilagan)

Participants to the 9th Ambassadors, Consuls General and Tourism Directors Tour to the Philippines will be treated to a full day out-of-town tour with a Grand Barrio Fiesta lunch and cultural presentation at the famed Hamilo Coast, Pico de Loro in Nasugbu, Batangas.

Jo Awayan celebrates 25 years in showbiz By Lou S. Sabas

Jo Awayan, once known in the Philippines as the “Queen of Lounge,” will celebrate her 25th year in show business with a show dubbed as “Awayan Five-0” on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 9 p.m. to be held at Noypitz Bar and Restaurant located at 933 N. Brand Blvd.,Glendale, CA 91202. This funny and talented lady from Cebu City is now based here in the U.S. and has made a name for herself in the local entertainment industry as a total performer, singer and comedian. Awayan started singing at a tender age of 12 and competed in singing contests. She became a folk singer that gave her the opportunity to sing professionally until she joined local bands in her community to help out her family. her strong determination to pursue her singing career forced her to move to Manila in 1989. There, she started singing back-ups for known artists, including Randy Santiago when the latter was then the “Concert King.” Santiago offered her the opportunity to form the “Big Thing Band.” The group started performing throughout Manila, doing campus tours, TV shows and concerts at the Music Museum. It didn’t take long for Awayan to decide to go on her own. She started her regular gig at the Cosmo Bar performing twice a week. From there, her career took off and more blessings came her way when BMG Records signed her up and released the songs “I love To Sing” and “Colors of Love,” which gave her a nomination for “Best Female Artist” in Awit Awards. Another door opened up for this Cebuana lass, when she became the initial “Sprite” artist for Coca Cola and later started touring with Ogie Alcasid and Janno Gibbs, then known as the “Small Brothers.” Acting opportunities came knocking at her door for sitcoms such as “Bistek” and “Palibasa Lalake.” While under the management of Joy Alonzo, Awayan visited the U.S. in the year 2000. Rhea Espino, Alice and Joey Gonzalez and yours truly put together an intimate concert for her at Max’s of Manila in Glendale. A huge group of Rhea’s friends flocked Max’s Karaoke Bar and it was an evening of fun and non-stop entertainment from Awayan. Since I was the Entertainment Manager of Max’s Karaoke Bar at that time, we

had to cancel my regular Saturday Karaoke Night to make her show possible and it was worth it. As I recall, it was Awayan’s first show here in the U.S., followed by her performance as a guest celebrity singer at my Karaoke Singing Competition at the Pistahan held at California State University in Northridge, California. In 2002, she was offered to relocate to the U.S. performing alongside Bernardo Bernardo and Leonard Obal as the main acts for Ichiban Library in San Francisco, California. Awayan’s name spread in the local scene which Pave the way for a regular performance at Cache Creek Casino, followed by a weekly show with Jinan Acrobats of Cirque Du Soleil. She stayed in the U.S. for several years until in 2006, when she had to go back home to take care of personal issues and be with her ailing father. During that stay back home, she was able to do a lot of gigs with Allan K. Shortly after that, she came back to the U.S. and since then, she has been based here in California hosting karaoke nights, as well as doing and producing concerts. Her passion, hardwork and perseverance to pursue that dream made her one of the legendary artists in the Filipino-American community. A media colleague, Diony Grava, described her as one of the kind-hearted greats. Jo Awayan was one of the celebrity artists when our group of FilAm Media in Los Angeles did a fund raising event for media colleagues back home, victims of typhoon “Sendong” in January of 2012. Due to her humble beginnings, Awayan’s heart is in the right place to give a helping hand to those in need. Portion of the proceeds of her latest concert will go to the victims of typhoon “Yolanda,” who are still misplaced in Villamon Airbase, Samar and Tacloban. Aside from celebrating her 25th year in the music industry, Awayan is also celebrating her 50th birthday. And there’s no better time to celebrate both with friends, family and loved ones. “Awayan Five-0” is being presented by AngJo Production, Awayan’s very own entertainment company with partner, Angel Rivero as co-executive producer. It will be under the direction of Thage Montecarlo with Roy Venturina as musical director. For details, please call 702.272.6629.

PHL widens tourism campaign with Php554.4-M fund MANILA, June 26 (Mabuhay) – In line with the Aquino Administration’s efforts at elevating the Philippines as one of the top tourist destinations in the world, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has released Php554.4 million to the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) for the implementation of its marketing and promotional activities. The funding will support the efforts of the TPB to highlight the country’s products, landmark destinations, and services, with the end goal of increasing tourism arrivals and investments to 10 million tourists by 2016. “We’re already seeing more foreign tourists flocking to the country, and the local tourism industry is now at its most vibrant. This latest release supports our efforts to bring more visitors into the country. While broadening the government’s tourism campaign will certainly be a major component in our marketing efforts, the fact that the country has so many to offer to both our domestic and foreign tourists is a definite advantage,” DBM Secretary Florencio “Butch” Abad said.

“Further improving our growing tourism industry will help create more business opportunities and generate more jobs in tourism-oriented communities. This will in turn complement our other efforts in pursuing our bigger goals of economic expansion and inclusive growth,” he added. Of the Php554.4-million fund release, Php429.4 million will be charged against the Tourism Promotions Board Fund under the Special Account in the General Fund to cover the first-quarter operating requirements of the TPB. The remaining Php125 million is part of the promotions board’s regular subsidy and will be utilized for its second-quarter funding needs. Part of the TPB’s promotional activities include organizing the country’s participation in trade and consumer fairs and other related exhibitions and events. They also conduct invitational and familiarization programs for wholesalers, retailers, members of the media, and other influential groups and individuals to promote awareness and create a demand for the Philippine tourist destinations.

The illegal practice was aimed at increasing the company’s monthly revenue at the expense of the public. After several complaints about the practice, Bryant was fired. Aquino heckled anew, this time in Iloilo City MANILA, June 27 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III on Friday was heckled for the second time this month, this time in a city considered to be a bailiwick of his administration. While delivering his speech at the inauguration of the Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue Road Widening Project in Iloilo City, Aquino was interrupted by at least four protesters who shouted words at him. The President stopped, smiled, and said: “Maraming salamat po sa kanila.” He then proceeded with his speech while the protesters were taken away by authorities. The interruption happened as Aquino was thanking Ilonggos for their support, especially during elections. “Kitang-kita na ng mga taga-Iloilo sino ang tunay na magsusulong ng makabuluhan... na pagbabago,” he said. Also present with Aquino were Interior Sec. Mar Roxas and Senate President Franklin Drilon. In his speech, Drilon said Ilonggos are thankful to the President for paying attention to their province. In a text message, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the President always tries to be accessible to the people and one of them is through events such as the one in Iloilo.

who refuses to participate in activities that violate the law. How does an employee prove to the court that the employer has engaged in illegal retaliation? First, it must be shown that the employee engaged in a protected activity, such as providing information to, or testifying before, any public agency conducting an investigation or hearing. Second, it must be shown that the employer subjected the employee to an adverse employment action, such as a demotion or a termination. And lastly, it must be shown that there is a ‘causal link’ between the employee’s and the employer’s respective conduct. A causal link may be established by circumstantial evidence. For example, the employer knew that the employee engaged in protected activity and immediately after, the employee was fired.

Evidence that the employer knew about the employee’s protected activity is important in establishing the causal link. California’s anti-retaliation law protecting whistleblowers was recently expanded to cover employees who complain within a company about unlawful practices. It also now applies to cases where the employee truly believed the conduct they complained about was unlawful, even if it was not. [C. Japan to study possible subway system for PHL – Aquino MANILA, June 25 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III said that Japan has promised to conduct studies on the feasibility of a subway system in Metro Manila. “Nangako ang Japan na gumawa ng mas detalyadong pag-aaral para tukuyin kung posible ang isang subway system para sa Kalakhang Maynila,” Aquino said upon returning from his one-day working visit in Japan. During their meeting in Tokyo on Tuesday, the President said he also thanked Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for

the study already being conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency on improving the Philippines’ existing transport system. “Naniniwala po tayo na ang matibay na imprastruktura ay sandigan ng mas malakas na ekonomiya,” he said. Aquino quoted Abe as saying that some Japanese companies, specifically those in the automotive industry, have expressed interest in establishing manufacturing operations in the Philippines. “Sa patuloy nga na pag-arangkada

Aquino: Japanese car companies eye manufacturing plants in PHL MANILA, June 25 (Mabuhay) – President Aquino had good news upon his return from a working visit to Japan. Among them interest from Japanese car companies to put up manufacturing plants in the Philippines.

Aquino also noted Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe cheered the Senate’s approval of a bill that allows full foreign ownership of Philippine banks, as Japanese investors would prefer to do business with Japanese-owned banks. (MNS)

DOJ recommends raps vs. labor exec in Saudi over ‘sex for flight scheme’ MANILA, June 26 (Mabuhay) – The Department of Justice has recommended the filing of acts of lasciviousness charges against a labor attaché in Saudi Arabia, who was embroiled in a “sex for flight” scheme preying on overseas Filipino workers. The DOJ declined to identify the labor official, saying the Anti-Rape Law prohibited it, but added it found probable cause to file two counts of abuses against chastity. Justice Secretary Leila de Lima explained that certain provisions in Republic Act 8353 or the Anti-Rape Law prohibits the government from divulging to the public names of victims and suspects in rape cases. An official may be held liable for abuses against chastity when he “solicits or makes an immoral or indecent advances to a woman interested in matters pending before such officer for decision,” according to Article 245 of the Revised Penal Code. The complainant-OFW said she went to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office on February 5, 2013 after she ran away from her employer. She was brought to Bahay Kalinga where she first met the labor attaché. She said she sought refuge from the POLO because her employer allegedly forced her to work for almost 24 hours a day, and even locked her up for two nights without food and water. “On their way to the Bahay Kalinga, respondent labor attaché asked if her employer touched her private parts, and if not, would she allow him to do it,” said the DOJ. Then in April 2013, the victim said she received a call from a man who identified himself as “Muhammad” and offered her a part-time job of having a “one-night stand.” The victim claimed she recognized the

man’s voice as the labor attaché’s since she has been speaking with him over the phone at least thrice a week for the past two months. The following day, “Muhammad” called her up once again and requested that she send him a photo of her in her underwear, but the victim refused. The OFW also claimed “Muhammad” mentioned “personal circumstances” that only she and the labor attaché knew about.

ng ating ekonomiya, hindi nga po maikakailang lalong lumalakas ang kumpiyansa ng mga mamumuhunan sa atin,” he said. He said the Japanese minister also supports the passage of a measure which will allow more foreign participation in the country’s banking industry.

“Ang konteksto po nito: mas sanay makipag-ugnayan ang mga kumpanyang Hapon sa mga bangko na galing sa kanilang bansa. Sa batas na ito, lalo pang magiging mas mabilis at epektibo ang pagpasok ng puhunan mula po sa kanila patungo sa ating bansa,” he said. (MNS)

‘Help, can I file bankruptcy again?’ I’ve been asked this question a few times lately so I decided to write an article on it. If you have filed bankruptcy before, you may be wondering whether it’s possible to do it again. Generally, the answer is that you can file bankruptcy as often as needed BUT subject to some limitations such as the following. I will try to simplify but here are the general rules: Consecutive same Chapter filings: If you are filing under the same bankruptcy “chapter” (7 date that your last case was filed. or 13), the timing is critical. If you are Chapter 13, then Chapter 7: If you trying to file a Chapter 7 after you’ve al- obtained a prior discharge (i.e., a “debt ready filed another Chapter 7 in the past, wipe out”) under Chapter 13, you will you need to wait 8 years from the date not be allowed a second discharge in a your last case was filed. your current Chapter 7 case if you either paid all unsecured creditors in your past Chapter 13 case or you paid at least 70% of the unsecured claims and the plan represented your “best effort” and proposed in “good faith”. Chapter 7, then Chapter 13: If you discharged your debts in a prior Chapter 7, you cannot obtain another discharge in a subsequent Chapter 13 filing unless four years have passed since your Chapter 7 filing date. This doesn’t mean, however, that you cannot file a Chapter 13 if your intention is to pay creditors the best you can. It only means that since there is no discharge available, whatever is not paid through your Chapter 13 plain will still be your liability. Now you may ask: Why file a Chapter 13 then if a discharge is not available under these circumstances? The answer is that it depends on what your goals are in filing the current Chapter 13. For example, one reason for filing may be to get court protection while consolidating non-dischargeable debts such as IRS taxes. Or it may be to stop a foreclosure and pay back the arrears through a 3-5 year pay-

ment plan. There are other “tricky” rules you need to know about that apply to dismissals and conversions from one chapter to another but I could just imagine how your head may be spinning by now trying to make sense of all these rules. Villar wants sin taxes to fund rare disease management MANILA, June 25 (Mabuhay) – Sen. Cynthia Villar today said government should tap collections from sin taxes to fund research and information initiatives for the treatment and management of rare diseases. The bill she filed, Senate Bill 2279, seeks to direct provisions from the sin taxes collection to cover the cost of care for patients with rare diseases. It also seeks to mandate the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation to include the cost of treatment of rare disease as part of its Catastrophic Illness Resource Fund. “We need a law that will help provide patients with rare diseases, and their families, better access to adequate medical care, health information, and healthcare products needed to treat their condition,” Villar said. “This will make available early and sustainable care for patients suffering from rare diseases, relevant researches on rare diseases, and integration of the health care activities for informational program on rare diseases for the general public and health care practitioners,” she added. The Nacionalista Party senator noted that in the Philippines alone, these rare diseases affect one in every 20,000 Filipino children. A “rare disease”, otherwise called an “orphan disorder”, is any health condition resulting from genetic defects that rarely affect the general population, which

are often chronic, progressive, degenerative, and life-threatening. These diseases inflict a small number of individuals and treatment is usually life term and costly, making it beyond the reach of most Filipino patients. Furthermore, the quality of life of patients is often compromised by the Iack or loss of autonomy, high level of pain and suffering for the patient and their family. Currently, there are about 6,000-8,000 identified rare diseases, 75% of which affect children. Of this percentage, 30% of them die before they reach the age of five years. The bill makes sure that every patient diagnosed to have a rare disease has access to timely health information and adequate medical care, including drugs and other healthcare products to treat or otherwise help them cope with their condition. It will also provides regulatory and fiscal incentives to support research and development activities on rare diseases and the importation or manufacture of affordable orphan drugs or orphan products. Once enacted into law, a financial incentive system will be institutionalized for agencies involved in clinical researches, patient care, medical information management, and other similar activities for the benefit of persons afflicted with a rare disease. Philippine imports up 3% in April MANILA, June 25 (Mabuhay) – Philippine imports in April climbed 3 percent from a year earlier, the statistics agency said on Wednesday. Imports reached $5.31 billion in April. Top imports in April were mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, accounting for 27 percent of the total. Mineral fuel imports climbed an annual 11.5 percent to $1.43 billion during the month. Imports of electronic parts in April, the second top shipment with a 19.5 percent share, fell 3.1 percent from a year earlier, to $1.04 billion. Electronics imports are components used by the semiconductor and electronics industry, the biggest export sector and a major contributor to the economy. The country had a trade deficit of $743 million in April, bringing the trade gap in the first four months of the year to $2.65 billion. The electronics industry group has forecast electronic exports will grow 5 percent this year. The Philippine government expects imports in 2014 to grow 9 percent, ahead

of a previous forecast of 6 percent, before rising to 10 percent next year and 12 percent in 2016, on higher shipments of construction materials for rebuilding after last year’s super typhoon and the start of big infrastructure projects. Manila kept its export growth estimates at 6 percent this year, 8 percent next year and 10 percent in 2016. The Philippine Statistics Authority has revised trade data for 2013 and will also revise trade numbers for previous years. Based on the new revised data, the Philippines had a trade deficit of $5.71 billion in 2013, much lower than the previously reported deficit of $7.85 billion. Officials have set an economic growth target of 6.5-7.5 percent this year, after growth of 7.2 percent in 2013. (MNS)

The E Visa classification as an immigration option for the business savy immigrant For most professional immigrants that seek long term immigration status in the US, the key to success is finding an employer that would Petition them for an H-1b visa. Purchasing an existing and profitable business is more likely to satisfy the “substantial investment requirement. Preparing an E case requires presenting legal and financial documents which reflects the ownership structure of the business as well as its financial condition. In the case of a new business, a well put together business plan should be prepared. It may be necessary to employ the services of other experts such as a CPA in addition to the immigration attorney. Due to the complexity of the E classification, aliens should seek the assistance of an experienced immigration attorney. US: Undocumented child migrants will be deported WASHINGTON, June 24, 2014 (AFP) – US authorities have stressed that thousands of underage migrants rushing to make it into the United States, most of them from violent regions of Central America, will face deportation. “While some might make asylum requests, I want to make very clear that asylum is very difficult to obtain. Very few people get asylum in the United States, Esther Olavarria, an adviser to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, said Monday. The United States has seen a huge surge in young migrants fleeing gang violence and poverty in Central America – mostly from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. US officials say they have detained more than 52,000 unaccompanied children trying to enter the country from October 2013 and mid-June – more than twice the number detained from October 2012 through the end of 2013. Some enter the country and request asylum. Others contact relatives already in the United States and petition to remain. There has also been an increase in the number of mothers traveling with their children, officials say. Many reports say smugglers fuel rumors that some US permit

or temporary status may be granted for minors, apparently to keep business booming. But Johnson himself insisted in a lengthy editorial in US Spanish-language media at the weekend that the United States would not grant residents’ permits to undocumented youths. “To the parents of these children I have one simple message: Sending your child to travel illegally into the United States is not the solution, Johnson wrote. “In the hands of smugglers, many children are traumatized and psychologically abused by their journey, or worse, beaten, starved, sexually assaulted or sold into the sex trade ... (and) there are no ‘permisos,’ ‘permits’ or free passes at the end. “If your child is caught crossing the border illegally, he or she will be charged with violating United States immigration laws, and placed in deportation proceedings – a situation no one wants. “The document issued to your child is not a ‘permiso,’ but a ‘Notice To Appear’ in a deportation proceeding before an immigration judge, Johnson underscored. Vice President Joe Biden, on a visit to Guatemala on Friday, said Central American child migrants leave their countries because of poverty, violent crime and a failure of local legal systems.

Dozens of foreign diplomats seek asylum in Canada OTTAWA, June 27, 2014 (AFP) – Dozens of foreign diplomats have requested asylum in Canada, the daily French-language newspaper La Presse reported Friday, citing secret government documents. They include 38 Afghanistan envoys and their families, from 2009 to 2014, as well as 16 diplomats from countries such as Syria, Iraq, Greece, Honduras, and even an American embassy staffer. Former head of Canada’s consular affairs, Gar Pardy, told the Montreal newspaper this is an “unprecedented number of refugee claims by foreign officials. Experts said they are motivated by the hope for a better life, or are aware of rights abuses in their homeland that they can no longer support, or they have simply become accustomed to a North American lifestyle and do not wish to return home after their assignment ends. Immigration spokeswoman Alexis Pavlich noted that Canada has “one of the most fair and generous asylum systems in the world. She would not comment on specific cases, citing Canada’s strict privacy laws. However, she added: When a mission employee makes an asylum claim in Canada, his/her accreditation or diplomatic status is rescinded by the Department of Foreign Affairs... and he/she is processed in the same manner as all other asylum claimants.

OPINION

Speaker Boehner: Obama ‘abused his power’

WASHINGTON, June 25, 2014 (AFP) – Republican House Speaker John Boehner said Wednesday that his chamber planned to “file suit in the coming weeks” against President Barack Obama for abuse of executive power. Obama’s Republican foes have long accused him of exceeding the regulatory boundaries laid out under the US Constitution, following a series of executive actions taken by the president. But the suit marks a concrete move in what Boehner called an “effort to compel the president to follow his oath of office and faithfully execute the laws of our country.” Obama’s fellow Democrats labeled the action a political stunt – with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi calling it “a subterfuge” – a little more than four months ahead of midterm elections in which Republicans hope to regain control of the Democrat-held Senate. “There really needs to be an adult in that room of the Republican caucus,” Pelosi said. In a memo to fellow House lawmakers, Boehner said he intended “to bring to the floor in July legislation that would authorize the House of Representatives... to file suit in the coming weeks.” “When there is a failure on the part of the president to faithfully execute the law, the House has the authority to challenge this failure in the judicial branch by filing suit in federal court,” Boehner said. Republicans accuse Obama of power overreach through executive actions such as delays in implementing some components of health care reform and a 2012 decision halting deportations of certain undocumented individuals who arrive as children to the US. More recently, lawmakers lashed out at Obama for failing to inform Congress of a prisoner swap to release US Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl from the Taliban in Afghanistan. Dreading lame-duck status, Obama declared 2014 a “year of action” and is using executive power to fight climate change, boost the middle class and repair US infrastructure. While presidential orders can be effective, they pale in comparison to what a like-minded Congress could do.

US: Mexico should do more to ease youth migrant wave WASHINGTON, June 24, 2014 (AFP) – President Barack Obama’s administration said Tuesday that Mexican cooperation was crucial for stopping children illegally crossing the border, as US lawmakers demanded Mexico and other governments take stronger action to stem the crisis. With the number of underage, unaccompanied migrants rushing to make it into the United States more than doubling in the last year, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told Congress that Mexico and Washington must beef up cooperation to meet their “shared border security interests.” “Clearly, a key to this is what the government of Mexico can do,” Johnson told a House panel. Johnson was asked to detail the actions taken by Obama’s administration to deal with some 52,000 undocumented youths who have surged over the border into the United States in the last nine months. About two-thirds of the children are from Central American countries like Honduras and Guatemala, which Johnson said he would visit July 8-9 in a bid to reduce the flow from that country and coordinate the reintegration of Guatemalan youths. Some enter US territory and request asylum. Others contact relatives already in the United States and petition to remain. Washington talked tough at the weekend, warning that the majority of detained youths would be deported. But lawmakers also pointed the finger at Mexico and Central America, saying Washington ought to cut foreign aid to nations that facilitate smuggling. “Regarding Mexico, which is our neighbor and one of our largest trading partners, they are behaving

so badly and so dishonorably that they are complicit in human smuggling,” House Republican Candice Miller told Johnson. “Instead of increasing funding... I would say, no more money from America until they step up to their own responsibilities, and stop their citizens illegally migrating to the US.” Other lawmakers like conservative congressman Paul Broun accused Washington of complicity in the problem. “I think this administration is inviting these kids, and is inviting immigrant aliens to come to this country,” Broun said. Johnson for his part said he would travel Wednesday to Nogales, Arizona, to inspect centers where many of the children have been detained, reportedly in bad conditions. The issue has swelled into another scandal for the Obama administration, but Johnson stressed it was incumbent on US officials to treat the migrants humanely. “We are talking about large numbers of children, without their parents, who have arrived at our border – hungry, thirsty, exhausted, scared and vulnerable,” Johnson said. “How we treat the children, in particular, is a reflection of our laws and our values.” House Speaker John Boehner has pricked Obama for a slow response to the situation, and last week wrote the president urging him to dispatch the National Guard to care for the detained youths. “We’ve got... a humanitarian disaster on the border, most of it the president’s making, in my opinion,” Boehner said Tuesday.

Aquino defends police work in recent crimes MANILA, June 25 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III on Tuesday defended the Philippine National Police from criticisms that it is failing to address the rising criminality in the country. In an interview with reporters during his one-day working visit in Japan, Aquino said police already had witnesses and arrested two suspects a day after Urbiztondo Mayor Ernesto Balolong Jr. was shot. “So that is already a significant change. Tapos... I think I’d like to credit naman the police for, one, capturing them and for, two, parang convincing these witnesses to... to say what they know as opposed to the others na natatakot,” he said. Similarly, he said police have also arrested at least three suspects in the killing of trader Richard King in Davao City last June 12. “They seem to... have developed already a very good case,” he said.

He said police likewise seem to have good leads in the killing of racing champ Ferdinand “Enzo” Pastor, who was shot in Quezon City. The President said this was despite the fact that there is a big difference in the ratio of policemen to citizens. “Maawa naman ako sa kapulisan natin,” he said, adding that some of them are not receiving the pension they deserve. The Palace had said that in 1986 when the country’s population was only 50 million, the Philippines had 125,000 cops, a ratio of one policeman for every 400 citizens. But now, there are only 148,000 cops for 97 million Filipinos, which translates to one police officer for every 675 people. The Palace, however, had said that the crime rate has actually been dropping since 2010, when Aquino assumed office. (MNS)

EDCA will pass constitutional test: US ambassador MANILA, June 27 (Mabuhay) – Notwithstanding challenges before the Supreme Court, US Ambassador Philip Goldberg is confident the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement between the Philippines and his country will stand legal and constitutional scrutiny. Speaking before the Philippine Constitution Association Thursday evening, Goldberg said the agreement was carefully crafted to ensure it would be “mutually beneficial” to the Philippines and the United States, and that it would meet the stipulations of the Constitution.” “The reason it took eight months and eight rounds of formal and informal negotiations is because we have a concern in issues regarding sovereignty in the Philippines,” he said. “We wanted to make sure that it would meet the constitutional requisites, to make sure that it would hold up to scrutiny, legally and politically.” He stressed that the new pact is based on the Mutual Defense Treaty and the Visiting Forces Agreement, which have been long in place. He also disputed notions that the EDCA would lead to new military bases, saying the agreement only allows the increased presence of US troops in

the country on a rotational basis, which he said is in line with his country’s “re-balance to Asia” and a recognition of the “importance of the Asia Pacific region to the US.” “The re-balance is a recognition that Asia is a growing economy ... there is the security element and that security element is important as an overlay for the economic side of the re-balance,” he said. Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez, who is also Philconsa president, said his group is still firming up its position on the EDCA, although he hinted at what that might be. “Anything that goes for securing the country will supersede any other technical ‎and legal infirmities that it may seemingly pose. The ultimate goal of the Constitution is to secure the nation, anything that lends itself to that, we are quite supportive of,” he said. The EDCA was signed by Goldberg and Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin on April 28, just before US President Barack Obama arrived for a visit. The government claims the pact presents a way to modernize the Armed Forces of the Philippines through more joint military exercises. There are two petitions against EDCA before the Supreme Court.

Aquino to summon officials over price hikes Soldiers march during an Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) change of command ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo military headquarters in Quezon city, Metro Manila back in January 2013. Senior officers said a two-mile run could be “life-threatening” to troops, and have shortened a fitness test to compensate after three officers have collapsed and died doing the fitness tests since 2010. (MNS photo)

AFP says 2-mile run for soldiers ‘life-threatening’ can fall victim to heart attack or stroke,” he said. One of those who died was a marine officer who ran the old distance in 16 minutes, Zagala said. All the time limits are determined by the troops’ ages, with the youngest soldiers required to run the two kilometers within 12 minutes, according to Zagala. Officers who fail the test will not be given command assignments, while failure for ordinary soldiers could be cause for dismissal from the service, he added. Zagala insisted that, despite the seemingly short distance and slow times required, the fitness test was in line with other nations. He said four neighboring Southeast Asian countries had also decided to implement shorter runs in their fitness tests, with Indonesian troops running the longest at 2.4 kilometers.

MANILA, June 25, 2014 (AFP) – Most armies pride themselves on pushing soldiers to their physical limits in preparation for combat. But in the Philippines, senior officers have decided a two-mile run could be “lifethreatening” to troops, and have shortened a fitness test to compensate. The timed run forms a key part of the twice-yearly fitness examination for all soldiers, but from next month the apparently deadly distance will be reduced to a safer two kilometers, military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Ramon Zagala said. The change was instituted as three officers have collapsed and died doing the fitness tests since 2010, according to a military commissioned health study that recommended the shorter runs, according to Zagala. “The technical working group found out that after two kilometers they (soldiers)

MANILA, June 25 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III said he will summon officials concerning the price hikes of basic goods in the country. “There will be a meeting, perhaps this week – if not, at the latest, by next week. Che-check-in rin ‘yung especially rice but also pati na rin sa garlic to determine exactly what is causing this price spike or price spikes,” Aquino told reporters during his one-day working visit in Japan on Tuesday. Earlier, the Palace admitted that the government has yet to determine the cause of the sudden surge in the price of garlic and other goods. In the past few weeks, the price of imported garlic has been hovering at P300 to P400 per kilo in Metro Manila while commercial rice prices increased by P2 per kilogram. The Palace later on said the hike might have been due to port congestion and the government’s own campaign against smuggling.

“Ang daming debate... ‘Yung output dahil sa ‘Yolanda’, ‘Santi’, and others, ano ba ang epekto talaga nun? ‘Yung laban natin, laban sa Spratlys, ay nagpapataas ng presyo? We need definitive answers,” said the President. But while they are still determining the cause, Aquino said the government has decided to import rice because the projection is that supply will be thin in June and July. He also said the public in the meantime can avail of “low-end” rice since its price hasn’t had much movement. “[The] NFA [National Food Authority] has also doubled its normal supply to ensure that there is... adequate supply that will prevent any undue upward move[ment] – parang ‘yung panic buying that will induce further price spikes,” he said. Aside from this, he said he has also tasked the Department of Science and Technology to help paint a “real and accurate picture” of the country’s rice supply. (MNS)

Senate to investigate high prices of garlic – Drilon MANILA, June 25 (Mabuhay) – Senate President Franklin Drilon on Wednesday said the Senate committee on agriculture will investigate the sudden increase on the prices of garlic and other agricultural products. ”We will investigate this in the committee on agriculture. Let’s see why there was sudden increase on the prices of garlic,” Drilon said in radio dzRH interview. Drilon said the Senate will deeply scrutinize whether sudden spike was due to hoarding, price manipulation or simple effect of the law of supply and demand. ”That, we will investigate. If we find that there was price manipulation, we will prosecute them through the Department of Agriculture,” Drilon said. On the reports that only 20 percent of garlic supply in the country was produced locally, Drilon said the government should step in by providing more assistance to the garlic farmers. ”Perhaps the solution here is to give our garlic farmers more support like more access to credit to increase the production

of local garlic and not rely too much on the imported garlic,” Drilon said. Drilon said the prices of garlic which reportedly skyrocketed to as much as P320 per kilo should serve as a wakeup call for the government to address the problems not only garlic but other agricultural products like ginger and rice. Recently, Senators Cynthia Villar, chairperson of the Senate committee on agriculture, and Bam Aquino called on the DA to focus and expedite its investigation on the sudden rise of garlic prices. ””We have to ensure the protection of the consuming public. The exorbitant prices being imposed on garlic might also result to an increase in the prices of other food products,” Villar said. Aquino said the DA must ensure that no group or personalities are manipulating garlic prices. ”Let us not allow the interest of abusive personalities or groups to inflict further burden on our farmers and take away the hard-earned money of consuming public,” Aquino said. (MNS)

“This will make available early and sustainable care for patients suffering from rare diseases, relevant researches on rare diseases, and integration of the health care activities for informational program on rare

diseases for the general public and health care practitioners,” she added. The Nacionalista Party senator noted that in the Philippines alone, these rare diseases affect one in every 20,000 Filipino children. A “rare disease”, otherwise called an “orphan disorder”, is any health condition resulting from genetic defects that rarely affect the general population, which are often chronic, progressive, degenerative, and life-threatening.

Healthy buzzwords on junk food labels trick consumers: study

According to a recent study, shoppers should consult a product’s ingredients to avoid falling for the misleading claims of health benefits that appear on many labels. ©Dmitry Kalinovsky / shutterstock.com

(Relaxnews) – Buzzwords like “glutenfree,” “antioxidants” and “whole-grain” pepper the grocery store aisles, but do they really mean that such products are healthy? A recent study conducted at the University of Houston warns shoppers to proceed with caution. Researchers say these health-related euphemisms have a powerful impact on consumers and, in light of the actual ingredients in some of these products, could convey a false sense of health. For example, Cherry 7Up now bears the “antioxidant” label, which has become the emblem of anti-aging and prevention of cancer and heart disease. “Saying Cherry 7-Up contains antioxidants is misleading,” says Temple Northup, an assistant professor at the Jack J. Valenti School of Communication at UH. “Food marketers are exploiting consumer desires to be healthy by marketing products as nutritious when, in fact, they’re not.” Although the FDA requires Nutrition Information labels in the United States and similar labeling systems are seen in other countries, Northup’s research concludes they have little effect on consumers. “Words like organic, antioxidant, natural and gluten-free imply some sort of healthy benefit,” Northup said. “When people stop to think about it, there’s nothing healthy about Antioxidant Cherry 7-Up – it’s mostly filled with high fructose syrup or sugar. But its name is giving you this clue that there is some sort of health benefit to something that is not healthy at all.” In the study, a total of 318 participants were asked to analyze the health aspects of certain products and determine if they were actually healthy for them. Participants were shown labels of the following products both with and without their accompanying “magic words”: Annie’s Bunny Fruit Snacks (organic), Apple Sauce (organic), Chef Boyardee Beefaroni (whole grain) Chef Boyardee Lasagna (whole grain), Chocolate Cheerios (heart healthy), Cherry 7Up (antioxidant), Smuckers Peanut Butter (all natural) and Tostitos (all natural). sing an online survey, Northup’s team showed participants the labels of the products mentioned as well as versions that had the buzzwords removed using Photoshop. They were asked to rate how healthy they thought each product was. According to results, when advertising promises health benefits, consumers respond.

“Each time a participant saw one of the triggering words on a label, they would identify it as healthier than the other image without the word,” said Northup. Northup’s research delved into the psychological aspect of manipulation via word connotations, called “priming,” and how it can influence beliefs and inspire behaviors. Indeed, in one phase of the study, participants leaned towards the processed, canned meat product Spam as the healthier option over salmon. Northup says this is an example of how advertising can mislead consumers and that it also indicates a common lack of understanding of the information provided by nutrition labels. He hopes his research will lead to greater media literacy and an enlightened public understanding of food marketing. The study, titled “Truth, Lies, and Packaging: How Food Marketing Creates a False Sense of Health,” was published in Food Studies.

Julia, Enrique agree: Experience is best teacher Young stars Julia Barretto and Enrique Gil, who are being romantically linked to each other, believe that experience is the best teacher when it comes to matters of the heart.“I believe you’ll never know if you don’t try,” Barretto said in an interview during a shoot for her first endorsement with Gil. “I’m like that kasi – unless you’ll experience it yourself, unless you learned from it, you’ll never know.” “Now, I can say, I know what’s right for my heart,” she added. Gil agreed with his “Mirabella” leading lady.

“How would you know if it’s the right thing if you will not try it? Paano mo masasabi na mahal mo ang isang taong ito kung before, hindi ka pa na-in-love? If I feel I love somebody ‘tapos nag-break kami, hindi pala love ‘yun,” Gil said. “Kasi kung love ‘yun, kami pa rin ‘yun. If you know what love is, madi-distinguish mo ang totoo o hindi. So now, I think I know more and more sa mga nangyari the past few days. Mas alam ko what’s real or not,” Gil added. Barretto and Gil are currently finishing their hit soap, “Mirabella”. (MNS)

All’s good between Sam Concepcion, sisters Jasmine, Anne Months after he and Anne Curtis became embroiled in a controversy, actor-singer Sam Concepcion proudly shared that his relationship with Anne’s sister, Jasmine, was not affected negatively by the incident. Concepcion played down the incident as just “a bump in the road.” “It didn’t affect [us] in any way that’s negative. Of course, in any kind of relationship, there are bumps that you meet along the way. Things like that happen, I guess, and it’s something that you learn to overcome ‘All’s good between Sam Concepcion, sisters Jasmine, Anne (with photo: 25sam.jpg) After a while, ganun din naman. Okay naman ang lahat, wala namang problema,” he said. Jasmine, for her part, said she is “pretty sure we were good because everything was

well talked out.” “I think, for me, it was easier because I would speak to him and I would speak to her and the stories were aligned. I spoke to him first and when I did, he told me everything already. And then also with her, I didn’t tell her that I had spoken to him yet so I would hear everything really from her only point of view and everything was the same. So I had no problem understanding the both of them and I gave them both my piece of opinion but at the end of the day, it was really up to them to talk it out. I cleared it with them that I really don’t want to get into anyone’s shoes and mess things up even more. I know they can handle it. Especially that they’re both important to me, I don’t want to be making the issue bigger,” she said.

COMMUNITY

Philippine Independence Day’s moving tribute to its heroes By Dan E. Nino

It was moving. It was touching. There was a civic and patriotic pride among the Filipino Americans who celebrated for the first time the proclamation of the Philippine Independence Day in front of the well-manicured lawn of the Cerritos Civic Center under the blazing sun on June 14. Despite the late Spring noon-day weather, the festivities encapsulated all the patriotic fervor of the Filipino community who were embraced by their adopted country, the U.S.A. Aside from the formal ceremony, historical and musical presentation and cultural entertainment, it was doubly fitting filled with Filipino pride when five Filipino American elected officials across town witnessed the 116th Independence Day celebration. Cerritos Mayor Mark E. Pulido, Bellflower Mayor Sonny Santa Ines, former Artesia Mayor and current Councilman Victor Manalo, Carson Mayor Pro Tem Elito Santarina and former ABC Unified School District Board President and current Board Member Armin Reyes together with Philippine Consul General Leo M. Herrera-Lim to Los Angeles, beamed with pride. Captain Keith Swensson of the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station joined in the celebration and introduced Lieutenant Eduardo Arnaldo from the station, who is of Filipino ancestry. The Filipino American community representing various civic and business sectors in the Cerritos area came in full circle with

attendees served with light snacks and refreshments. A touching tribute filled the air when three descendants of the Philippine revolution were honored for the heroism of their forefathers. Mayor Pulido and Consul General Herrera-Lim presented plaques to Renato Rizal, grandnephew of Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal; Marvin Diwa, great grandson of Ladislao Diwa, one of the three founders of “Katipunan,” which waged war against Spain; and Romeo Ricarte, Sr., grandson of Gen. Artemio Ricarte of the Philippine Revolutionary Army. Mayor Pulido also recognized and thanked the team of organizers who staged successfully this historic event for the first time despite the short period of preparation. He said, “As Mayor of Cerritos, I want to commend the Filipino American community of Cerritos, especially the Organizing Committee and generous event sponsors, food donors and talented performers for presenting the first celebration of Philippine Independence Day in Cerritos.” He made special mention of Pangasinan Brotherhood-USA which served as the fiscal sponsor. “Cerritos is a diverse and vibrant community of people from all over the world. It is heartwarming to see a celebration – commemorating the declaration of independence from colonial rule – be held in our community, which is a shining example of equality and inclusiveness.”

“I thank the new Philippine Consul General Leo M. Herrera-Lim and actor Dante Basco who grew up in Cerritos, for joining us in this historic celebration.” The young Basco who served as master of ceremonies is a pioneering Filipino American actor, poet, writer and producer whose career has spanned over the last two decades and brought to life iconic characters such as Rufio in Steven Spielberg’s “Hook,” starring alongside Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman; as Prince Zuko in Nickelodeon’s phenomenal series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender”; and as Ben Mercado in the Filipino American independent film classic, “The Debut.” Basco was born in Pittsburg, CA, and comes from a Filipino American family of five talented siblings who were raised in Cerritos, CA and attended Tetzlaff Middle School here in the ABC Unified School District. The audience gave him a warm welcome for his return home to Cerritos. Current and former State and local officials were also on hand to grace the event among them Artesia Mayor Pro Tem Miguel Canales, Artesia Councilman Ali Taj, Bellflower Unified School Board President Debbie Cuadros, Cerritos College Board Trustee John Paul Drayer, former Assemblyman Tony Mendoza and former Cerritos Mayor Laura Lee. Several candidates to the Miss Philippines-USA, Miss Young Philippines-USA and Binibining Pilipinas-USA beauty pageants were also in attendance as volunteer ambassadors of goodwill. Consul General Herrera-Lim in an upbeat speech expressed his pleasure for being assigned to Los Angeles not only for its pleasant weather but takes pride of the estimated 800,000 Filipino Americans that reside in Southern California out of 3 million nationwide. He quipped, “I hope that Mayor Mark Pulido or any other Filipino Americans can be elected to the U.S. Congress someday. Prominent Filipino heroes of the Philip-

pine’ quest for independence from Spain – Dr. Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, Gabriela Silang and Tandang Sora – were also honored when their huge portraits were paraded proudly then hoisted towards the center stage by six men in their resplendent Barong Tagalog which is the Filipino national costume. Cerritos area talents were tapped by organizers to participate in the ceremony, render patriotic songs and musical tributes to the festivity: A Filipino American Musical Ensemble rendered a rondalla musical prelude; the Filipino American Law Enforcement Officers Association marched in a Parade of Colors; Ruben Cuatrona, Jr. sang the U.S. National Anthem while the Filipino Seniors of Cerritos Chorale performed the Philippine National Anthem. A song invocation was performed by the Holy Family Church Mass Harmony Choir. Maaikee K and Samantha Murray performed a duet of “Ako Ay Pilipino” (I Am A Pilipino); the Filipino Cultural School Students performed the “Silong Sa Ganding Folk Dance”; the Whitney High School Club Kaibigan, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary year, wowed the crowd with their intricate Tinikling and Bulaklakan Folk Dance; 10-year-old Reneese Velez sang “Dahil Sa Iyo”; The Filipino Seniors Chorale of Cerritos sang “Sa Libis Ng Nayon”; the Get Back Band played a medley of English and Pilipino danceable music; a chorale group of Filipino students from the ABC Unified School District led by Ruben Cuatrona, Jr., Maaikee K., Michael Keith, Reese Valdez and Samantha Murray performed “Heal the World”; Erwin Andaya evoked nostalgia while dishing out patriotic and love songs. The festivity was capped by a community singing of “Bayan Ko (My Country) which drew misty eyes from the audience who were mostly clad in their Filipino attire.

House holds hearing on denied WWII Fil-Am vets’s benefits WASHINGTON – Congressman Joe Heck held his first official hearing as House Armed Services Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman. The hearing, entitled “Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Fund: Examining the Department of Defense and Interagency Process for Verifying Eligibility,” provided Rep. Heck and a bipartisan group of subcommittee members the opportunity to question witnesses from the Department of the Army, Department of Veterans Affairs, and National Archives and Records Administration, the main agencies with jurisdiction over the Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Fund. In his opening remarks, Rep. Heck talked about the heroic service of Filipino soldiers in World War II and described the plight of The Mighty Five, a group of Filipino-American World War II veterans who reside in Las Vegas and have been denied full recognition of their service. Congressman Heck has worked on the recognition of Filipino-American veterans since coming to Congress in 2011. He has twice introduced legislation to “direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to accept certain documents as proof of service in determining the eligibility of an individual to receive amounts from the Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Fund.” On February 18, 1946, President Harry S. Truman signed the Rescission Act of 1946 into law. This law denied Filipino World War II veterans, who served before July 1, 1946, the benefits promised to them five years prior by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. These veterans fought under the direction of U.S. commanders for several years as the conflict against Imperial Japan ensued in the Pacific theater, only to be eventually denied compensation. In 2009, Congress finally acknowledged the dedicated service of these veterans when it established the Filipino Veterans Equity

Compensation Fund. However, since that time, thousands of Filipino-American veterans have had their claims denied on the grounds that they did not possess proper documentation. Congressman Joe Heck represents Nevada’s Third Congressional District in the House of Representatives. He serves on the House Armed Services Committee, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. Hearing on WWII Fil-Am vets ‘GOP grandstanding’ Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) National Coordinator Arturo Garcia, however, summed up the organization’s stand on the subcommittee hearing on June 26 at the lower house of the US Congress. Garcia said, “As we understand, this hearing it is not about legislation. It is to investigate what is going wrong with the current program and why so many have been denied and have filed complaints and appeals. Thus JFAV believes it is just another GOP grandstanding in this coming 2014 mid-terms election and are just pursuing the case of 25,000 denied Filipino World War II Veterans claims against the DVA to further their political ends.” Garcia said, “We must remember that the GOP-controlled House of Representatives consistently promised to give Filipino World War II veterans a hearing, but never gave them any benefits since 2011.” He said that some independent analysts on veteran issues have affirmed that this is not a legislative hearing. “It is an investigation and audit hearing committee looking into issues like funds spent, what is wrong and why our vets are not being recognized in this current program by this administration.” Garcia said, “We need to hear on record why these agencies are not being open and

San Diego Fil-Am Alkrizzia Villapando earns degree at UCLA with honors Los Angeles – The Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) is proud to announce that a Filipino-American, Alkrizzia Villapando of San Diego, earned her Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Psychobiology in just three years from the prestigious University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA) with honors and who was feted for her achievements by the Samahang Pilipino Student Graduation Celebration, followed by a sumptuous meal with her proud parents, relatives from San Diego and Los Angeles and all of her friends at Kapistahan Grill in the Historic Filipinotown last June 15. Alkrizzia served as the community coordinator for Samahang Pilipino at UCLA for 20013-14, and is a member of the JFAV Steering Committee of JFAV for Southern California. As the JFAV leader in UCLA, she led the students and the Samahang Pilipino in the successful 13th Veterans Day March on Nov 11, 2013 in Hollywood, in various Kabataang Makabayan (KmB) activities (a member organization of the AlliancePhilippines) such as the 22nd FPAC in September 2013 and the Sagip Tuluy-tuloy Tulong Pilipinas (STTP) 2013-14 Relief Drive for typoon Yolanda victims in the

fair and why we are told Filipinos are corrupt or enemy sympathizers as some of the excuses to deny them the benefits they have earned. Enough is enough! Hearings or no hearings at all, we are tired of lip-service from President Obama and the Congress. We are sick and tired of hearing things like this as excuses for not honoring these veterans who served the United States Army and put their lives on the line.” According to news reports, Eric Lachica, executive director of the American Coalition for Filipino Veterans who also testified before the House committee, said that “while the US Congress appropriated $265 million for the Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation (FVEC) in 2009 – some 4,552 Filipino veterans were still denied

compensation of $15,000 each.” The report also said that Lachica cited problems surrounding the Filipino Veteran eligibility determination process: The VA Secretary relied solely on the National Personnel Record Center in Missouri as proof of their service, but that those archives are incomplete; The US Army failed to grant the Filipino vets their benefits even if their names are found on recognized rosters of guerrillas. Can you buy a home after bankruptcy, short sale or foreclosure? There’s no question the economy has not been kind for many California families who bought and borrowed more than they can chew in the mid 2000s’. Bad things happen to good people and many folks fell victim to bankruptcy, foreclosures, and lost a home either through short sale. Buying a home after this type of financial hurdle may be much easier than you think. With the recent increase in bankruptcy and foreclosure filings, lenders are changing their guidelines to allow potential homeowners to get back o 20% down payment | Minimum 680 in the real estate market faster. US home price growth brakes in April WASHINGTON, June 24, 2014 (AFP) – US home price gains slowed sharply in April, providing fresh evidence of a weakness in the housing market recovery, the S&P Case-Shiller index showed Tuesday. The 20-city index of home prices rose at an annual rate of 10.8 percent in April, following the 12.4 percent growth rate posted for March. Month-over-month, the index rose 1.1 percent. The slowdown was seen in 19 of the 20 cities, with three California cities – Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco – posting hefty price drops of about three percentage points, year-on-year.

Most of homeowners that went thru the short sale in the 2-3 years ago are now trying to work on getting a new loan. Again, it definitely worth a phone call to inquire about your option to buy a house. I am sure whomever is renting is feeling the pain of paying high rents without too much benefits. Home values are steadily looking rosier but interest rates are getting traction to move up maybe slowly but surely. Boston was the only city where the price gains picked up pace. The slowdown was stronger than expected. Analysts on average estimated the 20-city index would post an annual pace of 11.6 percent. David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee, said that although the annual gains weakened, the month-over-month numbers were strong. Five cities – Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle – had monthly gains of at least two percent. “Near-term economic factors favor further gains in housing: mortgage rates are lower than a year ago, the Fed is expected to keep interest rates steady until mid-2015 and the labor market is improving,” he said. “The question is whether housing will bounce back before the Fed begins to tighten sometime next year.”

When to use Chapter 13 Chapter 13 is normally used to save a house from foreclosure. But this is not the only situation where Chapter 13 is used. US Supreme Court rules against online TV startup Aereo By Rob Lever, Chantal Valery

WASHINGTON, June 25, 2014 (AFP) – A startup which captures over-the-air television for Internet viewing violates copyright laws, the US Supreme Court ruled Wednesday, in a landmark case affecting the tech sector and TV industries. The court ruled 6-3 that Aereo illegally retransmits broadcast signals, despite the claim that its tiny personalized antennas merely allow customers to watch or record what would be free TV programs. Justice Stephen Breyer wrote in the majority opinion that Aereo effectively operates like a cable company and must therefore pay for broadcast rights. Breyer said on the bench that Aereo’s activities “infringe the (television) networks’ exclusive right to publicly perform their copyrighted works. The decision is a major victory for the broadcast and cable industries, which said that Aereo was threatening their business models. Breyer said the case “makes clear that Aereo is not simply an equipment provider but that its “activities are substantially similar to those of the (cable) companies. “Aereo sells a service that allows subscribers to watch television programs, many of which are copyrighted, almost as they are being broadcast, he wrote in the opinion. The top US court reversed a lower court decision in favor of Aereo, and sent the case back for further proceedings. At stake are billions of dollars in fees paid by cable and satellite firms, which Aereo circumvents, in what could be the most significant copyright case in decades. Aereo, which is backed by media mogul

Barry Diller, launched in early 2012 in the New York area and was immediately sued by the major broadcast networks – ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox – for copyright infringement. The company, which is expanding to other cities, says its actions are legal because it is not rebroadcasting, but giving subscribers a personal antenna in its New York warehouse that enables them to watch live TV or record it for later viewing on computers or mobile devices. Cloud computing separate The nine justices struggled with the case because of concerns that a ruling against Aereo could hurt other kinds of Internet firms, notably cloud service providers which store content for later viewing. Breyer wrote however that “we cannot now answer more precisely how... (the decision) will apply to technologies not before us. He added that questions about cloud computing will need to await a separate case. In a dissent, Justice Antonin Scalia said Aereo merely providers a convenient way for Internet users to access what would be free broadcast television. “Unlike video-on-demand services, Aereo does not provide a prearranged assortment of movies and television shows, Scalia wrote. “Rather, it assigns each subscriber an antenna that – like a library card – can be used to obtain whatever broadcasts are freely available. Some of those broadcasts are copyrighted; others are in the public domain. “The key point is that subscribers call all the shots.

Sending a heckler to prison for interrupting your Independence Day speech that, in the first place, should have been a marching order for unity to protect our sovereignty from foreign aggression smacks of the dark days of martial rule under Pres. Ironically, Ateneo de Naga student activist and heckler Emannuel Mijares must just be mimicking his father Ninoy, a known firebrand when he was in college. If only for its PR value, the incident should have been a photo-op for a president taking the cudgels for free speech. He could have used his presidential powers to good use by saving this student from arrest if only to honor the legacy of his parents who fought and died for democracy. But the Filipinos themselves are uptight and lacking in humor. It must be the Asian in us of always saving face. You just have to read the trash talks on Facebook among jilted lovers and how the plots on Prime-

How the whole nation raises a howl and demands an apology whenever we got dissed as a nation of maids and fake doctors; okay, that’s foul, but if its Teri Hatcher dishing it out on a sitcom, I’ll take it with a grain of salt if only because her well-endowed bosoms that are the subject of that “Desperate Housewives take on breast implants are “real and spectacular. We are a nation of smiling people but behind that smile is a grin over the desperate affairs of our society. But wait. Isn’t governance a two-way street? It takes two to tango. It’s always the government that is at fault, like we didn’t have a hand in installing it nor do we have the discipline to follow the laws. What is really sad is that we don’t take it a joke that we keep electing crooks who make a joke of our laws, like most us also do.

Mass gay wedding in Toronto for 115 couples By Michel Comte

TORONTO, June 26, 2014 (AFP) – Australians Richard Laslett and Collin Gunther waited 37 years to say “I do to one another. The couple finally got their chance on Thursday in Toronto, at a mass wedding that brought 115 gay and lesbian couples together, as part of the city’s World Pride Week. The pairs from around the world gathered in the garden of a midtown Neo-Gothic castle to “celebrate the power of love, Toronto interim Mayor Norm Kelly said. “After a while, you think it’s never going to happen, Gunther told AFP moments before the men exchanged vows. “You settle into a relationship, added Laslett. Swept up in the moment while traveling abroad and confident that their marriage will someday be recognized back home, they took the plunge. “We’ll call ourselves husband and husband, said Laslett, “even though our marriage won’t be recognized when we go home to Melbourne, Australia. Worldwide, 15 countries now allow same-sex marriage. Canadian gays and lesbians have been tying the knot since June 2005, when a series of court decisions forced Ottawa to legalize same-sex marriages on the basis that denying them was discriminatory. ‘The real thing’ In Casa Loma’s magnificent gardens, couples dressed in white gowns and black tuxedos sipped champagne from flutes and chatted with guests among the flowers and water fountains, under a hot sun. More than 200 couples were originally

expected by organizers hoping to break a world record, but many were unable to arrange travel or obtain a local marriage license in time for the event. “This is not a pretend wedding. It’s the real thing, said host Nick Di Donato. Couples traveled from as far as Australia, Ghana and Taiwan to wed. “It’s an opportunity for them to publicly express their love and commitment to each other, Di Donato said, even if their marriages may not be recognized or legal in their home countries. The interfaith ceremony integrated elements from twelve denominations, including Judaism, Buddhism, Paganism, Anglicanism, First Nations and Islam. The event also marked the first time a Sikh minister has presided over a gay marriage, according to Yogi Akal. No Sikhs, however, were married at the event. “I’m very excited, Akal told AFP. “I’m having a good time. I hope all of the couples here are having a good time. But you can’t do this in a lot of places – you’d be killed. The Sikh faith does not specifically decry homosexuality, “but there are personal and cultural biases that exist, Akal added. Nevertheless, “religion doesn’t belong in the bedroom, he said. ‘No different from anybody else’ “I think it’s about time the world celebrated us and this kind of relationship. Because we are no different from anybody else. But we have to do something like this to make this statement to the whole world that our relationships are just legitimate, said Nora, who said her vows at the mass ceremony.

El-Farouk Khaki, a gay imam who also took part, said he has faced discrimination along several avenues. A heterosexual couple at his mosque, for instance, were fine with being married by a woman, but not a gay man. But at a ceremony in the US state of Ohio, he said, “Evangelicals had a problem with me being Muslim, not with me being gay. On the other hand, he said: “some

conservative Muslims also embrace gay marriage, because they believe gay men should not be exempt from the rules of Islam: everyone must be married to have sex, he said. Breaking in, his partner Troy Jackson suddenly got down on one knee and proposed to Khaki. “I just called my mother (in Eastern Canada). She screamed, and congratulated us, Jackson said later.

US top court strikes down abortion-clinic buffer zone WASHINGTON, June 26, 2014 (AFP) – Buffer zones around abortion clinics in the state of Massachusetts were deemed unconstitutional Thursday by the US Supreme Court on grounds that they limit freedom of expression. Massachusetts law requires protesters to stay at least 35 feet (10 meters) from the entrances to clinics that provide abortions and Thursday’s ruling could have implications for other US states that have similar “buffer legislation. The high court ruled unanimously that the 2007 Massachusetts restriction “violates the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which ensures freedom of expression. The law, the court said in a decision written by Chief Justice John Roberts, “restricts access to ‘public way[s]’ and ‘sidewalk[s],’ places that have traditionally been open for speech activities. The decision acknowledged that “the buffer zones serve the commonwealth’s

(Massachusetts’) legitimate interests in maintaining public safety on streets and sidewalks. But at the same time, it said, “they impose serious burdens on petitioners’ speech, depriving them of their two primary methods of communicating with arriving patients: close, personal conversations and distribution of literature. Seven anti-abortion advocates led by plaintiff Eleanor McCullen appealed the case to the Supreme Court. Anti-abortion advocates have set up long-running protests outside many abortion clinics. In some instances demonstrators have brandished pictures of aborted fetuses, handed out informational pamphlets and suggested alternatives to abortions to women arriving at clinics. In extreme cases, there have been violent attacks on staff and doctors. Two doctors who provided abortions were killed in 1994 in Massachusetts.

LeBron James dumps Heat deal for free agency: report MIAMI, June 24, 2014 (AFP) – NBA superstar LeBron James has informed the Miami Heat that he will exercise an early termination option in his contract and become a free agent next week, ESPN reported Tuesday. Richie Paul, James’ agent, told the team of his client’s decision, which came ahead of a deadline next Monday to decide whether or not to opt out of the last two years of his Miami contract. James, who was set to make $20 million next season, won his first career NBA titles with the Heat in 2012 and 2013. He also led Miami to the NBA Finals in 2011, when Dallas beat the Heat, and this year, when Miami lost to San Antonio.

After the Heat’s last loss in the NBA Finals, James said he wanted time on vacation with his family before considering his future plans. James said he welcomed the chance for the same free agency freedom he had in 2010, when he signed with the Heat after spending his first seven NBA seasons in Cleveland. James, a high school star near Akron just south of Cleveland, could attract other talented players alongside him after his stellar stint in Miami. Opting out of his contract does not mean James could not re-sign with the Heat, but it would likely make the price tag much higher for Miami to keep the four-time

Cuba drops players who ‘planned to flee’ HAVANA, June 25, 2014 (AFP) – Cuba has dumped six baseball players from the national team, alleging they had planned to flee the communist island, a top official said Wednesday. The news came days after one of Cuba’s hottest young baseball prospects, powerhitting outfielder Yasmani Tomas fled, in the latest in a string of recent defections. Sources close to his family have said he went to the Dominican Republic. Cuban baseball federation boss Higinio Velez named 43 players in his squad for games against a United States university selection at the end of July in Cuba, but said: “There are a few young players with

potential who are absent because they were planning to leave the country illegally.” Those excluded were named as Gelkis Jimenez, Adriel Labrada, Carlos Manuel Portuondo, Yasmani Hernandez Romero, Diosdani Castillo and Alejandro Jaime Ortiz. It was not clear what had happened to them. Officials in Havana have hoped to stem the number of defections with a policy change in January 2013 that made it easier for Cubans to travel overseas. President Raul Castro’s government also recently increased the wages paid to athletes and coaches.

NBA Most Valuable Player. The Heat would be able to offer more money and a longer-term deal to James than any rival club, but other teams would likely bid high for the chance to land James, who was the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player in 2012 and 2013. James could also sign with another club for less than the maximum, freeing up salary cap funds to attract other talented players in hopes of building a title contender as he did with the Heat. Much of the talk about potential rival suitors for James has centered on a return to Cleveland, the city whose fans felt betrayed when he spurned them to take his talents to Miami.

James’ wife, Savannah, posted an Instagram message late Sunday night with a map of Ohio, a star on the city of Akron and the message “Home sweet home!! The countdown is real! #330” – the hashtage a reference to the telephone area code for Akron. That sparked speculation, so far unconfirmed, that she might be referring to a family relocation rather than a trip home for the James clan. The Cavaliers own the top pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft and have just signed a new coach in Dave Blatt, who guided Tel Aviv to a Euroleague crown this year and Russia to a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Bite victim Holyfield joins Twitter talk on ‘jaws’ Suarez By Leila Macor

MONTEVIDEO, June 24, 2014 (AFP) – Uruguay striker Luis Suarez sparked a Twitter storm with his World Cup bite scandal, from pictures of him with a muzzle to a reaction from once-bitten boxing legend Evander Holyfield. Uruguay’s 1-0 victory over Italy on Tuesday, which qualified them to the second round at the European team’s expense, was overshadowed by allegations Suarez got away with biting defender Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder. “I guess any part of the body is up for eating,” wrote Holyfield, whose ear was partly chomped off by rival Mike Tyson in a 1997 heavyweight fight. Other social media users published photo montages of the Liverpool forward, who had been sanctioned twice before for biting players in the Netherlands and England. One picture shows him with the mask of Hannibal Lecter, the fictional, cannibalistic serial killer portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in “Silence of the Lambs.”

MOTORING

Customer thought he couldn’t buy brand-new car, but Victory Autos Inc. made it possible There was one week in my life that I had nothing but trials. I was pulled over a couple of times that week. Its because my old car has been a “teenage car” so it’s a cop magnet. And I don’t want to have any hassles anymore. But people keep telling me to get a newer car. But I know I didn’t have much for me to buy a new car. But then my cousin and some friends told me I should try to check dealerships. But I just decided to call a friend and ask around and he told me to call a Pinoy dealership that he found in Weekend Balita. I’m so skeptical to call because my cousin and uncle told to me to be careful because most dealerships lure you to get a car that you know in yourself that you can’t pay for. But then I decided to call just one number and one dealership alone. Just to try my luck. I knew I had been dealing with much more trials and problems in life but I told myself this is one of those moments that I needed to try rather than give up. So I called Kuya Heddy. He was very friendly. I told him my story behind why I’m trying to get a new car. He unhesitantly offered me a ride to their dealership since my old car was impounded. So I’m still feeling skeptical about it since I haven’t even met him. The weekend came and I went to their shop. Talked to Kuya Heddy, but it wasn’t even about the car I was trying to check. After 10 minutes, he told me he can help me get a new car….with a staggered down payment. Minimum payments for everything even if I didn’t have much to offer him. So, a few minutes later, he told me if I wanted to see the car he was offering me. I saw a black on black brand-new Honda Accord, which before I was only dreaming to have. I told Kuya Heddy I like it black on black. Then he told me it’s all mine. We then went up his office another 10 minutes of paper works… handed me the keys, went to the car…took a picture of me and my wife and my uncle with the brand-new car. Up til now I just can’t believe that I already bought a car. A brand-new car that I never even thought I could have. Thanks to the help of Kuya Heddy and Ate Nene who were there to make calls and followups to what I should do since this was my first time to get a brand-new car. I never imagined it was that easy. They have been very honest and very helpful to me and my family. I can never thank them enough for trusting me even though they know I didn’t have much but just my words and honesty. Thanks Kuya Heddy and Ate Nene. – RAP Backed by their 25 years in car busi-

GM recalls 33,000 Chevy Cruzes over faulty airbags WASHINGTON, June 27, 2014 (AFP) – General Motors is recalling 33,000 Chevrolet Cruze sedans in North America from model years 2013 and 2014 due to faulty airbags built by Japan’s Takata. The new and used vehicles – about 29,000 in the United States and the rest in Canada – are among those that GM ordered to stop selling earlier this week. Potentially faulty airbags manufactured by Takata, which could rupture and propel debris inside a car, had already triggered the recall of millions of vehicles around the world, many of them Toyotas. “We are in the process now of launching the recall to repair the vehicles in customer hands,” GM spokesman Jim Cain told AFP, stressing the company “immediately” stopped sales of the vehicles after learning of the problem. “The stop sale was just a precautionary measure while we evaluated how many vehicles were impacted.” Cain had previously explained that some of the cars “may be equipped with a suspect driver’s air bag inflator module that may have been assembled with an incorrect part.”

GM dealers stop Cruze sales over faulty Takata airbags WASHINGTON, June 25, 2014 (AFP) – General Motors has told dealers to stop selling about 33,000 new and used Chevrolet Cruze sedans from model years 2013 and 2014 due to a potential problem with airbags from Japan’s Takata. Potentially faulty airbags manufactured by Takata – that could rupture and propel debris inside a car – have triggered the recall of millions of vehicles around the world, many of them Toyotas. GM spokesman Jim Cain said the automaker had notified US and Canadian automakers to halt Cruze deliveries “until further notice,” though sales of the unaffected vehicles were set to resume by the end of the week.

“Certain vehicles may be equipped with a suspect driver’s air bag inflator module that may have been assembled with an incorrect part,” he added. General Motors was “working diligently with the supplier of the defective part to identify specific vehicles affected and expect to resume deliveries by the end of this week once those vehicles are identified,” Cain said. The decision was more bad news for Takata, and for Chevrolet. Japanese automakers on Monday recalled nearly three million vehicles worldwide over an airbag defect that could pose a fire risk. Honda, Mazda and Nissan were affected.

Additional protection is offered through Mitsubishi Motors’ patented Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body/ chassis safety cell technology that includes energy absorbing sections beneath the front floor section of the passenger compartment, the engine’s sub-frame and to sections of the body and chassis. Choice of Versatile 4- and 6-Cylinder Drivetrains The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander is powered by a pair of very capable and fuel-

access to apps and services, which have been optimized for the car with voice input and glanceable controls. To ensure ease of use Hyundai engineers applied their core interior design principles of safety, intuitiveness and simplicity to the Android Auto implementation. The interaction between Android Auto and Hyundai’s AVN software transforms how an Android phone can be used inside a vehicle. Drivers can connect their phone to Android Auto via a USB port. Hyundai’s latest AVN systems are already recognized for their beautiful, yet intuitive interface and advanced feature set. Our engineers took advantage of the systems vivid eight-inch touchscreen and microphone to integrate Android Auto for an experience that Android smartphone users will instantly recognize.

“Android Auto’s clean and intuitive interface is a perfect match with Hyundai Motor Group’s interior design approach,” said Paul Choo, director, Silicon Valley Accelerator Lab. “The goal is to provide a smarter and safer way to use smartphone technology and convenience in cars. Android Auto helps us reach that goal.” Users will instantly recognize their basic Android phone applications, such as messaging, phone, Google Play Music and Google Maps upon connecting their Android phone to their Hyundai vehicle. Android Auto will also offer third party audio apps including Stitcher Radio for Podcasts, iHeartRadio – Internet Radio and NPR. Hyundai’s AVN systems will give users the benefit of having both Hyundai and Android Auto content co-existing simulta-

efficient engines: a robust 2.4-liter inline-4 mated to a high-tech continuously-variable transmission (CVT) or a workhorse 3.0-liter V-6 that is paired with a smoothoperating 6-speed automatic transmission. Featuring Mitsubishi Innovative Valvetiming Electronic Control (MIVEC) variable valve-lift for increased fuel efficiency, reduced exhaust emissions and to maximize power production, the 16-valve 2.4-liter SOHC 4-cylinder engine delivers 166 bhp at 6,000 RPM with 162 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm. The bore and stroke within the all-aluminum engine block measure 3.5 in. (88 mm) and 3.8 in. (97 mm), respectively, with a compression ratio of 10.5:1. Working in concert with an advanced continuously-variable transmission (CVT),

the 4-cylinder engine-equipped Outlander delivers outstanding fuel mileage at an EPA-rated 25 mpg city/31 mpg highway. What’s more, the CVT has been recalibrated for the 2015 model year for a more refined operation as well as improved response.
