China’s aircraft carrier ‘raises tension’ MANILA, November 27, 2013 (AFP) – The Philippines Wednesday criticized China’s dispatch of its first aircraft carrier to the South China Sea, saying it “raises tension” in waters where the two Asian neighbors are locked in a territorial dispute. “Its deployment does not contribute to collective efforts to strengthen regional stability and instead serves to strengthen the status quo,” foreign department spokesman Raul Hernandez said in a statement. “Its deployment raises tension,” he said, adding it was contrary to efforts by

BIR demands Pacquiao pay $50-M By J.R. Alibutud
MANILA, November 27, 2013 (AFP) – Philippines authorities demanded Wednesday that boxing great Manny Pacquiao pay a $50 million tax bill or risk having assets seized, but the national hero vowed to take the fight to court. The battle between one of the best boxers in history and the taxman has shocked his army of fans in the Philippines, emerging just days after a comeback win in the ring was hailed as a moment of hope amid the aftermath of a deadly typhoon. Pacquiao disclosed Tuesday the Bureau of Internal Revenue wanted 2.2 billion pesos ($50.2 million) for alleged unpaid taxes in 2008 and 2009, when he was at the peak of his career and one of the world’s highest-earning athletes. Pacquiao, 34, insisted he had paid his taxes in the United States, and so did not need to do so in the Philippines because See BIR DEMANDS, page 12
Enrile breaks silence, slams Sen. Miriam MANILA, Nov 27 (Mabuhay) – After keeping his peace, Senate Juan Ponce Enrile took the floor on Wednesday to lash back at his “obsessive hater,” apparently referring to his nemesis, Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago. Enrile did not name Santiago, but said this “obsessive hater” had accused him as “murderous” and mastermind or brains of the P10-billion “pork barrel” scam. He said he did not know why this unnamed senator was “obsessive and bitter” against him, but he surmised that it had something to do with his opposition on this unnamed senators’ appointment as Agrarian Reform Secretary during the time of the late President Corazon Aquino and his refusal to also include his colleague in the majority bloc when he became Senate President in 2008. “Nagpapasalamat ako sa kanyang sinabi na ako ay may asim pa pero ikinalulungkot kung sabihin at masakit mang banggitin hindi po ako naasiman sa kanya,” Enrile said. At a hearing of the Senate blue ribbon committee last November 7, Santiago described Enrile as “may asim pa.” Santiago, in various media interviews and statements, has called Enrile names like an “old man” suffering from dementia, and the mastermind or grandfather of the P10 billion “pork barrel” fund scam. Just last week, the lady senator suggested that Enrile should offer to commit “hara-kiri” now that the lawmakers’ pork barrel funds had been declared unconstiSee ENRILE, page 12

Arum tells BIR chief: Get IRS document yourself MANILA, Nov 27 (Mabuhay) – Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum on Wednesday criticized Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares over the tax case of Filipino boxing superstar Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. Arum said Henares should have asked the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for the document herself. “My question is why, this lady, as the head of the tax bureau in the Philippines, didn’t ask her counterpart in the United States for such a certificate?” Arum questioned. “She put the burden on Manny.” “Manny requested the certificate from the IRS, and I am sure the certificate will be coming in the next week or so, but it’s not Manny’s fault. It’s her fault,” Arum stressed. “I mean, she is the representative of the sovereign government of the Philippines, and the IRS is the agency of the sovereign nation of the United States of America,” he added. “The two governments
should have corresponded with each other to get the certificate, instead of putting the burden on the individual to get the certificate from the country, which he isn’t even a citizen of.” Arum further noted that Pacquiao, as an “icon and a congressman,” is not an ordinary citizen. “If she wanted to get that information from the Internal Revenue Service of the United States, she should have either asked for it herself and go to the President of the Philippines, who would have asked the United States to send it to the Philippines,” he said. “This is absolute nonsense.” Arum said they have already asked the IRS for a copy of the document that the BIR is asking for but the long wait for the certificate cannot be helped. “People ask for the certification. There’s a long list of people asking for the certification from different countries around the world,” he said. “It’s a bureaucracy, so it takes time.” “If she wanted the certificaSee ARUM TELLS, page 12

Haiyan death toll up to 5,500 MANILA, Nov 27 (Mabuhay) – The death toll from super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) climbed further to 5,500 as of Wednesday morning, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said. In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC also said 26,136 people were injured while 1,757 remain missing. At least 2,177,863 families or 9,927,335 people were affected in 11,939 villages in 44 provinces. Of these, 48,655 families or 225,922 people are staying in 1,069 evacuation centers. Damage caused by Yolanda was still estimated at P24,539,251,407.26, including P13,182,975,034 in infrastructure and P11,356,276,373.26 in agriculture. However, the NDRRMC noted an in-
crease in the number of damaged houses, including 574,392 destroyed and 575,137 damaged. It also said power outages are still being experienced in parts of Mimaropa, Bicol, and the entire Visayas. Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said 34,546 people, 1,336 vehicles, 111 seacraft, and 162 aircraft are deployed to strategic areas to expedite response and medical operations. This included 1,996 personnel for medical operations and 32,550 for response and other operations. Yolanda struck the central Philippines on November 8, the second super typhoon to hit the country this year. It is also the world’s strongest typhoon of 2013 and is ranked fourth in the world’s list of strongest typhoons. (MNS)

Mass vaccinations for typhoon-affected children TACLOBAN, November 27, 2013 (AFP) – A mass vaccination program has been launched in Philippine communities that were devastated by Super Typhoon Haiyan to protect children against measles and polio, UN agencies said Wednesday. The campaign began this week with 30,000 children being vaccinated in Tacloban city, one of the places hardest hit when Haiyan claimed thousands of lives nearly three weeks ago, the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF and World Health Organization said. “The children of Tacloban need all the protection they can get right now,” UNICEF emergency response coordinator Angela Kearney said in a joint statement by the agencies. “Disease is a silent predator, but we know how to prevent it and we will do everything that we can.” Sigrun Roesel, team leader of the WHO’s Philippine immunization program, said that sometimes crowded and insanitary conditions at evacuation centers were potential breeding grounds for disease. “Measles is a dangerous disease for young children, who could then catch pneumonia and die from it, especially if they are malnourished,” Roesel said.
She said the measles virus was a particular concern because it could easily be transmitted through coughing and sneezing. Roesel said the Philippines had its last polio case in 1993. “But Filipinos do a lot of international travelling and so there is a special effort to protect against its possible reintroduction,” she said. The UN said the vaccination program would aim to reach 500,000 children across the disaster zone, which covers dozens of ruined towns mainly on Leyte and Samar islands, two of the poorest in the country. The government’s confirmed death toll from Haiyan, which brought some of the strongest winds ever recorded and tsunamilike storm surges, rose by about 250 to 5,500, with another 1,757 people missing. The death toll has continued to climb because full assessments are still yet to be made in the devastated communities, and not because many more people have died in the aftermath of the typhoon. Haiyan rivals a 1976 tsunami on the southern island of Mindanao as the deadliest recorded natural disaster to strike the Philippines. The 1976 disaster killed between 5,000 and 8,000 people.
SC upholds forfeiture of ex-AFP chief’s P11.26M ‘unexplained wealth’ MANILA, Nov 27 (Mabuhay) -- The Supreme Court has upheld a Sandiganbayan decision ordering the forfeiture of a retired military chief’s “unexplained wealth” worth P11.26 million. In a two-page notice of resolution, the high court’s Third Division dismissed a petition for review filed by former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Lisandro Abadia contesting two rulings of the anti-graft court declaring P11,262,876.01 of his wealth as ill-gotten and ordering its forfeiture. “After a review of the records and finding no reversible error, the Court resolves to deny the petition and affirm the Sandiganbayan decision dated June 5, 2013 and its resolution dated September 18, 2013... which stated that petitioners were guilty of having unexplained wealth amounting to P11,262,876.01 which should be forfeited in favor of the State,” said the high court. The notice of resolution was signed by Division Clerk of Court Lucita Abjelina Soriano. In its decision, the Sandiganbayan Third Division said Abadia and his wife failed to convincingly explain how his declared net worth increased from P3.77 million in 1991 to P6.476 million in 1992 and P13.61 million in 1993. The P11.26 million amount was the aggregate value of the ill-gotten wealth that the couple amassed while Abadia was in active military service as declared by the anti-graft court.
Abadia, who served in the military for 36 years, was chief of the AFP from 1991 to 1994, the year he retired from service. Based on evidence submitted in court by Ombudsman prosecutor Charmaine M. Calalang, Abadia’s total disposable income from 1987 to 1993 was P2.63 million against his family’s expenses over the same period amounting to P2.77 million. Taking into account the sum of P280,000 raised from the sale of a property in Parañaque, the prosecution said Abadia’s net worth in 1993 would only have been P2.35 million. The court said the difference between P2.35 million and his P13.61 million declared assets in 1993 would show an unexplained wealth of P11.26 million. The anti-graft court said in case Abadia fails to return the amount to the government, the latter would order the forfeiture of his properties with the value equivalent to the amount. Abadia, in his defense, claimed his 1992 income went up because he sold a property for P2.55 million. The prosecution, however, presented a second deed of sale showing the selling price was only P200,000, although both documents were for the same lot with “the same area, metes and bounds.” Abadia was convicted of a perjury charge in July 2011 based on the discrepancy in the said property sale that was included in his 1992 Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN). ‘Yolanda’ disaster calls native son home By Danny Petilla
LOS ANGELES – An ominous text message sent from thousands of kilometers away in my hometown of Palo, Leyte province, at the height of Supertyphoon “Yolanda’s” fury on Nov. 8 may have changed my life forever. “Brother, our house is gone! Destroyed in less than an hour!” the message screamed on my iPhone in Waray, my native dialect. The sender was my younger sister Ruth, 46, who scrambled to compose her digital distress signal in the nick of time to beat Yolanda’s hurricane force winds of 300 kilometers per hour as it leveled our ancestral house to the ground and before it could cut power and telephone lines to isolate Palo, our city of Tacloban and the rest of Eastern Visayas to the outside world.
As it became apparent that Tacloban was now ground zero for one of the worst killer storms in recorded history, the steady drip of horrific details filtering out of the disaster area triggered a sort of global anxiety and waiting game for the thousands of overseas Filipino workers and expatriates like myself as we waited for any news about our loved ones in Leyte and Samar provinces. This anxiety would hit home in the coming days because I could not sleep thinking about Nanay Petra, my 85-year-old mother, who is sick with diabetes and high blood pressure, hobbled with arthritis and nearly blind with cataracts. My mother was a permanent US resident but she decided to return to Leyte after my father, Ignacio, a US war veteran, died
in California on Sept. 12, 1993. Then the grim possibility of multiple fatalities threatened my family’s wits as we also learned that our eldest brother, Reynaldo, 62, his wife Nene, and six of their children and grandchildren went missing for 12 days. When all of them showed up unscathed on Nov. 20, our family’s joy was overwhelming, almost rapturous. Days of anxiety Before that moment of good news, our families on both sides of the Pacific Ocean were dogged by days of anxiety and nervewracking stress and suspense as images of bodies and split debris littering the streets where I used to roam as a young man transfixed the world. The ensuing cries of desperation from survivors trying to leave Tacloban were torture to me. From the relative comfort of my home here in America, where I have been living for 22 years, I felt pangs of guilt and a creeping sense of remorse that I fled the Philippines in December 1991 to escape death threats and harassment from criminals and politicians alike. From a distance, I shed tears and whispered prayers for the thousands of my townmates killed in the initial impact of Yolanda’s tsunami-like storm surges. Death list The list of fatalities provided by my siblings via Facebook proved too much for me to bear: I lost a cousin, Teodosia Acebedo, a dear teacher, Cecilia Orejola, a boyhood friend, Mario Sison, and several neighbors, classmates and coworkers as well as colleagues from my days as a reporter for this newspaper in the late 1980s. Memories came flooding back to me as I reminisced about an eerily similar catastrophe I covered for the Inquirer on Nov. 5, 1991. That day Typhoon “Uring” (international name: “Thelma”) killed more than 6,000 people as storm surges as tall as houses swamped Ormoc, the coastal city 100 kilometers south of Tacloban. Survivors of that disaster remembered their dead on its 22nd anniversary this month. Three days later, Yolanda (international name: “Haiyan”) struck their neighbors to the north. As the 3.4 million Filipinos here in the United States kickstarted an unprecedented relief and reconstruction campaign, I planned my own way of helping. On Nov. 18, I spoke before hundreds of churchgoers at St. Mel Catholic parish
in Woodland Hills, California, where my family worships, to raise awareness of the massive humanitarian crisis unfolding in Yolanda’s wake. But I felt a certain hollowness and deep sense of shame as complete strangers from around the world rushed to our hometown to volunteer and offer help while I was paralyzed by fear and indecision in my adopted homeland. Difficult choice I wrestled with the difficult choice of temporarily leaving behind my family – a wife and two college-bound kids – to help my old family heal as they try to rebuild their broken lives. “Don’t worry about us, Dad. We’ll be fine. But your family in Palo needs you,” said my first-born Ignatius, 20, always offering the voice of reason. Ever the contrarian, my other son, Cornelius, 18, needled me: “You’re like the Alaskan salmon, Dad! People are desperately trying to get out of that place in droves and you want to sneak in.” But he relented and even gave me a going-away gift: an LED flashlight and a warm hug. My ever-supportive wife, Wilhma, 50, bought my open-ended Korean Air ticket to fly me back home. On Nov. 21, my family had Thanksgiving dinner a week early. And for the first time in 22 years, I am faced with the possibility of not spending the holidays with my family in America. Economic suicide With my family behind me, I also made a couple of gut-wrenching decisions: I quit my job of 12 years as a courier at Federal Express and took a leave of absence from my other job as a laboratory assistant at Quest Diagnostics Inc. In these uncertain times, leaving these jobs at two of the biggest employers in the United States seems like economic suicide. But the images of people who perished in the storm haunt me no end. I have crossed my Rubicon. There is no turning back. Shortly before midnight on Saturday, my plane touched down at Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Armed with a resolve to help, I will be back on the streets of my storm-battered hometown in a few days. Santiago bill seeks terminally ill person’s right to die MANILA, Nov 26 (Mabuhay) – Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago has filed a bill that will allow a patient with a terminal condition or “permanent unconscious condition” to refuse medical treatment and allow the “natural process of dying.” Senate Bill 1887 also known as the “Natural Death Act” filed by Santiago provides that any person of legal age and sound mind may execute a written instruction, “directing the witholding or withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment in a terminal condition or permanent unconscious condition.” The directive should be signed by the patient in the presence of two witnesses. But the witnesses, the bill said, should not be related to the declarer, should not be entitled to any portion of the estate of the declarer upon his or her demise, and should not be the attending physician of the declarer or an employee of the physician or a hospital in which the declarer is a patient. In the “health care directive,” the patient may “wilfully” and “voluntarily make known” his desire that his dying should
not be “artificially prolonged” if he was diagnosed for example to be in a terminal condition by the attending physician or in a permanent unconscious condition. “If at anytime I should be diagnosed in writing to be in a terminal condition by the attending physician or in a permanent unconscious condition by two physicians, and the where the application of lifesustaining treatment would serve only to artificially prolong the process of my dying, I direct that such treatment be withheld or withdrawn, and that I be permitted to die naturally…” said the proposed directive. The directive may also state that in the absence of the patient’s ability to give directions regarding the use of such lifesustaining treatment, “It is my intention that this directive shall be honored by my family and physician (s) as the final expression of my legal right to refuse medical or surgical treatment and I accept the consequences of such refusal.” The directive, under the bill, should be notarized and should be made part of the patient’s official medical records.

Supreme Court to take up birth control religion case BY Chantal Valery WASHINGTON, November 26, 2013 (AFP) – The US Supreme Court said Tuesday it will address the question of whether a firm can use religious grounds to limit the availability of birth control on its health plan. The court’s nine justices announced they would hear arguments, probably in March or April, in two cases between the US government and firms that object to purchasing health coverage covering certain contraceptive methods. In the first case, President Barack Obama’s administration is challenging the refusal of Hobby Lobby Stores to underwrite coverage for certain contraceptive methods. “The President believes that no one, including the government or for-profit corporations, should be able to dictate those decisions to women, the White House said in a statement shortly after the Supreme Court decision. The Oklahoma-based Hobby Lobby chain says it manages its business “in a manner consistent with biblical principles. Joined by the religious bookstore Mardel, Hobby Lobby has refused to abide by the new health care law’s requirement that it provide health insurance coverage for four methods of contraception (two abortive pills and two types of IUDs), or
pay a fine. The chain has not challenged other methods agreed to by the federal government – contraceptive pills, diaphragms and other barrier methods – but it objects to the four specific methods on grounds they are comparable to abortion. In a brief filed with the court, the company argued that “by providing insurance coverage for contraceptives that could prevent a human embryo from implanting in the uterus, they themselves would be morally complicit in ‘the death of [an] embryo.’ A federal appeals court agreed, ruling that the legal requirement was counter to the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). The Obama health care law exempted churches and other religious organizations from having to provide coverage for birth control. But the government argued that “no court has ever found a for-profit company to be a religious organization for purposes of federal law. The second case to be taken up by the court involves Pennsylvania company Conestoga Wood Specialists, which has appealed to the Supreme Court after losing a case in a lower court. The firm, which is owned by a Men-

MANILA, Nov 27 (Mabuhay) – The Philippine government’s response to super typhoon “Yolanda” will not define the administration of President Benigno Aquino III, Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas said Wednesday. Roxas said the government is now prioritizing rehabilitation and reconstruction in areas worst-hit by the super typhoon. He said priorities have changed after the typhoon hit the Central Visayas on November 8. “In the early days, it’s really just stabilizing and relief. Now, papasok tayo sa reconstruction and it would seem to me that the priority is twofold: getting the people their livelihood again and then shelter because it is December. Malamig, all these bronchial and other diseases might become a bigger problem later,” he said. Roxas said foreign donations for “Yolanda” survivors will be consolidated into one fund. From this, government will draw money for rehabilitation and reconstruction needs. He also said Tacloban’s airport is now functional and receiving both mercy and commercial flights. He also said some 280 government vehicles including trucks and
moving equipment are at the disaster zone, helping to clear debris, transport relief goods and recover bodies. He added that Ormoc’s relief needs are now being supplied out of a hub in Cebu. Roxas disagreed with observations that government’s response to the disaster would define Aquino’s leadership. Earlier reports said the government seemed to be ill-prepared for the calamity after aid to the typhoon-hit areas came in slowly. In the interview, Roxas said Aquino has weathered several calamities including typhoons and a massive earthquake. “This is a significant event but I don’t think that any one event defines six years of good governance that the President has brought to the country. The impeachment of the Chief Justice, that I think is a defining moment. The changing of the Ombudsman so that you have somebody who is impartial rather than somebody viewed as partial to the previous, that is a defining moment. The way the President handled with calm, with steadiness, with firmness the Zamboanga (siege). There were 500 people armed, there were mortars. That is a defining moment,” Roxas said.

More and more roads have opened up for transportation, buses and trucks are filling in to bring relief, as well as to bring the people out. More and more people are given relief distributions, and doctors and paramedics from all over the world are able to come in to set up their medical missions. The ten choppers brought in by the USS warship was an immense boost to ease the logistical nightmare we have initially encountered, with just 3 government C-130’s for use in the first few days. The UK, Australia, Japan, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Israel, Hungary, Singapore, UAE and many other countries sent in valuable equipment and transportation aside from aid. And I’m sure, it’s not hard to notice but practically all the citizens of this country contributed in his or her own way to ease the pain of our fellow Filipinos. All told, we expect the sufferings to ease up a little, but it would be ignorant to say that we expect all things to be well. Tacloban, Samar and Leyte will never be the same again. Highlighting the number of journalist killings, Reporters Without Borders secretary general Christophe Deloire said “another 52 journalists have been killed in connection with their work since the start of 2013.” Deloire said the journalists’ activist group was “outraged” by the killings of the French reporters in Mali “as we have been by the murders of fellow journalists in Syria, Somalia, Pakistan, Brazil and other parts of the world in 2013.” “The safety of journalists is an essential prerequisite for achieving freedom of expression, democracy, social development and peace,” Deloire added.
UNITED NATIONS, November 26, 2013 (AFP) – A UN committee on Tuesday voted to create an international day to protect journalists as media activists condemned the mounting number of reporters killed on duty. The Reporters Without Borders group welcomed the move and said 89 journalists were killed while working in 2012, the highest number in nearly two decades. The UN General Assembly’s human rights committee voted unanimously to make November 2 each year the International Day To End Impunity For Crimes Against Journalists. November 2 is the day that French radio journalists Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon were killed by militants in Mali this year. More than 70 countries co-sponsored a resolution which called on UN states

nos are some of the most wonderful and kind-hearted people in the world. Aside from this, I would also request that you and your colleagues do the following: Please, please, please do whatever you can to make sure that the immense aid in CASH that we have been receiving and continue to receive rightfully go to the rehabilitation of the devastated areas and not to the pockets of the corrupt few. Because you are Anderson Cooper, a wellrespected veteran journalist who the world listens to, we ask you to please help the cause of our Philippine Climate Change Commission in negotiator Naderev Sano for concrete steps to halt global warming. We have suffered for so long, how long will we suffer more? Anderson, can I also ask you to commend and show the pictures of our brave men and women as they perform their tasks, just as you show the ineptness and slow response of our officials to the current situation? Just to be fair to both sides and create an equal balance to the picture. The last thing we want is to see our dedicated volunteers lose their morale. Lastly, I ask that someday, when the time is right, and the country has risen up from this fall, please come back and show the world that this time we did right. If that day does not come, I will be the first to get out of the Philippines and declare it a banana republic forever.”

In her lawsuit, Ms. Warhime said she was treated differently than other employees because of her age, that when she complained to her supervisor about it, she experienced retaliation through formal discipline designed to lead to her termination. Ms. Warhime also said the employer failed to engage her in a timely interactive process and failed to provide reasonable accommodation for her disability. The employer countered that Ms. Warehime never embraced the new technology at work, that she rejected trainings, and blamed others when her work backed up. The employer also said they terminated her for low-balling customers on their claims, which led to lawsuits against the company. After listening to the evidence, the jurors found that Ms. Warehime had been a victim of age and disability discrimination and retaliation. The $749,000 verdict

Typhoon-hit farmers risk ‘double tragedy’: Food and Agri ROME, November 27, 2013 (AFP) – Farmers hit by Super Typhoon Haiyan face a “double tragedy” without urgent aid

2 Pinoys plead innocent in UAE drug case MANILA, Nov 27 (Mabuhay) – Two Filipinos on Monday pleaded innocent before a United Arab Emirates court on charges that they were trying to sell 0.26 gram of amphetamine. Both Filipinos, aged 33 and 29, were accused by prosecutors of trying to sell the drug for Dh800, UAE news site Gulf News reported late Tuesday. However, the two Filipinos, who were not identified in the report, admitted before the Dubai Court of First Instance that they were taking amphetamine and methamphetamine. Presiding Judge Wajdi Al Menyawi adjourned the case to hear prosecution witnesses on December 19. Prosecutors charged the two with possessing a banned substance for trading purposes and taking amphetamine and methamphetamine. They asked the court to implement a life sentence of 25 years and
a maximum fine of Dh200,000. During the court proceeding, an Emirati anti-narcotics police major testified an informant had tipped them off to the two Filipinos. He claimed the two were looking for someone to buy amphetamine for Dh800, prompting police to arrange a sting operation. Following the sting operation, police found the police money in the pocket of one of the Filipinos, who were not identified in the report. Police also seized in their possession a small weighing scale “used by drug peddlers to weigh drugs,” the major added. But a search of the Filipinos’ house did not yield more drugs. The Gulf News report said an Emirati lieutenant has claimed that the two defendants tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. (MNS)
Pacquiao-Mayweather bout could be on Showtime? MANILA, Nov 27 (Mabuhay) – Stephen Espinoza, executive vice-president of the Showtime premium cable channel in the US, said he will revive talks for a Manny Pacquiao - Floyd Mayweather bout with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, according to a report by The LA Times’ Lance Pugmire. “I will call Arum,” Espinoza said to Pugmire, also alleging that he has had prior attempts to contact Pacquiao’s promoter. “This is an enticing enough opportunity
to do it. “HBO, for whatever reason, doesn’t have an exclusive deal with Manny Pacquiao, so there’s no reason it can’t be on Showtime,” he added. Mayweather currently has four fights left on his Showtime contract. Pacquiao’s last few fights have all been on HBO. Arum however denied that Espinoza has made overtures to him, saying, “I know of no calls…made to me or my secretary in two years.”
The UN agency urged international donors to front at least $11 million (eight million euros) to help rural people in the Philippines clean farmland and de-silt irrigation canals rendered useless by this month’s typhoon. “The urgency of timing can’t be overstated,” said Dominique Burgeon, the director of FAO’s Emergency and Rehabilitation Division. “It would be a double tragedy if next spring farming families still needed to rely on continued humanitarian food assistance because we haven’t been able to support them as they recover from this disaster.” The Philippine Department of Agriculture has asked the FAO to support the cash-
for-work scheme covering some 150,000 hectares and 80 kilometers (50 miles) of communal irrigation canals, the FAO said. It takes one person 10 days to clear a single hectare of farmland, it said. The funding will also go towards acquiring some 1,400 communal irrigation pumps. The additional funds would come on top of $20 million already requested by the FAO to help Philippine farmers plant, fertilize, irrigate and maintain their crops to ensure the 2014 harvests. Super Typhoon Haiyan left almost 7,000 people dead or missing when it swept through the central Philippine islands early this month.

The newly-commissioned Liaoning left its home port of Qingdao on Tuesday on a training mission to the South China Sea, accompanied by two missile destroyers and two missile frigates, the official Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday. The deployment comes amid heightened tensions between China and its neighbors over disputed waters, with
Beijing declaring air defence rights over islands controlled by Japan at the weekend, provoking a furious international reaction. Beijing took effective control of Scarborough shoal, claimed by Manila and just 200 kilometres (120 miles) from the Philippines, last year. Henares said the tax bill may be cut if Pacquiao did provide certified documents proving he paid the US Internal Revenue Service. “What we want is evidence that he (Pacquiao) actually paid the tax.” But she said that even if he had paid the 30 percent tax rate in the United States, there would still be extra charges due in the Philippines because it had a higher rate of 32 percent.
The tax office has frozen his bank accounts in the Philippines, which Pacquiao said had left him financially paralysed. Henares said the tax office could eventually take the money owed by stripping him of his assets. She said the tax office had already placed a “lien” on a Pacquiao property, worth millions of dollars, in one of Manila’s most exclusive gated communities. A lien is a form of security which allows the tax office to take back money it is owed, via lease payments or sale of the property. Pacquiao to fight taxman Pacquiao went on a publicity blitz on Tuesday night, appearing on all the major domestic television networks, to insist on his innocence and brand the tax office’s actions “harassment”. “I am not a criminal or a thief. I am not hiding anything. I will face my problems as they come,” Pacquiao said.

tion quicker, she should have asked for it herself,” Arum said of Henares. “But the one thing she should have never done is to freeze this man’s bank accounts because of her own ineptitude.” The BIR issued a warrant of garnishment of Pacquiao’s bank accounts following the fighting congressman’s failure to provide the bureau with a copy of his tax return filed with the IRS. Henares said the BIR has been waiting since 2010 for a copy of the certificate. They received a document from Top Rank saying that the company had paid the correct taxes on Pacquiao’s behalf, but Henares said that document was “useless.” “Ang kailangan naming papeles ay ‘yung return na finile niya sa Internal
Revenue Service ng Amerika,” she said. Pacquiao in a press conference on Tuesday claimed that he is financially paralyzed because of the garnishment such that he had to borrow money just to fulfill his promise to help the victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda. Arum also clarified that they have regularly paid the IRS 30% of Pacquiao’s earnings, whether from his fight purses or from the endorsement deals he has done in the United States. “That is the law in the United States. When a non-resident alien like Manny Pacquiao fights or performs services in the U.S., you are required to withhold 30% of the money that goes to him and pay it to the US IRS for taxes,” he said.

However, with some setting aside their doubts, still they reached deeper into their faith and pockets books and raided their closets for usable items they could send to the Philippines. The moving realities of the destruction that people see in their electronic media have moved the hearts of many to be in giving mode and fundraising activities have become means of rallying kind-hearted individuals to reach out to
their fellowmen thousands of miles away. The powerful rains and fury of Typhoon Yolanda had similarly unleashed the benevolent spirits of many people of all color around the world. A question arises in this giving time for many who empathize with the calamity victims who would want to be part of the massive effort to help the more than 4 million people displaced and more than 350,000 living in more than 1,500 evacuation centers which are “straining under a lack of sanitation and basic supplies.” Follow your heart. have an automatic right of appeal. Canada Immigration has become very suspicious of marriages of convenience and will not hesitate to refuse a case if they feel that the relationship was entered into in bad faith. If that happens you are facing an appeal which can take over a year to be heard in court. Therefore, make sure you use the new requirements for such spousal applications and obtain the proper legal advice before it is filed. Q. I applied for permanent residence and added my spouse as my dependant. The Canadian Embassy is asking us to provide a record of marriage/certificate of no marriage. The problem is that my current spouse was actually married to someone else before we married. I agreed to marry him because his first wife disappeared and could not be found. I am afraid that his previous marriage will be a problem. Can we just file for an annulment now? A. Filing for an annulment will not help your current situation. Firstly, an annulment can be costly and time consuming. Second, an annulment does not negate the fact that (a) your spouse committed bigamy and (b) your misrepresented yourself on the application by stating that your spouse is
your husband when legally he is not. He is not legally married to you and is not your spouse. It would have been best to inform them that he was your common law partner in order to avoid this unfortunate scenario. Q. I want to adopt my niece who has been left orphaned by the recent Typhoon Haiyan. I’m employed in Canada and will have no problem caring for her. How can I get her to Canada on a priority basis? A. I am sorry to hear about your niece’s loss. If she is an orphan and under the age of 18 then you have two options. The first option is to apply for a visitor visa so she can enter Canada immediately. The second option is that you are able to sponsor her for permanent residence. If she is directly affected by the Typhoon , you must prove it and according to Canada Immigration’s recent announcement they will expedite the application process. World Vision opens its first Child-Friendly Spaces for 400 children in PHL Centers provide emergency emotional support for children affected by Typhoon Haiyan TABUGON, Philippines (November 21, 2013) -- World Vision opened on Wednesday its first dedicated “safe spaces” for 400 children affected by Typhoon Haiyan. The spaces allow children to continue learning, playing, and start coming to terms with the disaster. The first Child-Friendly Space was set up in Tabugon, Philippines, a remote community of northern Cebu, where homes and schools were flattened by the 200 mph winds. Around 40 more are planned for the coming weeks and months. “Some children have literally nothing left but the clothes on their back, and they
are living in a devastated landscape which was once their home. Everything around them, including their safety network, disappeared when the typhoon hit,” said Dr. Yvonne Duque, a health expert for World Vision in the Philippines. “Our immediate priority was to deliver food and water to families, and thousands of people have now received this. Now we need to urgently address children’s emotional needs, as well as ensure they’re protected. This is to provide safe areas to continue to provide some kind of normality amid this chaos.” According to a study from Columbia
University and World Vision, the benefits of Child-Friendly Spaces have proven effective in previous disasters, particularly as children’s development in their early years is known to have an impact throughout their whole life. Dr. Duque continued: “These spaces are a safe place for children to express themselves and start coming to terms with what has happened – often by explaining their emotions through artwork. They start drawing their surroundings, where they live and this starts helping them understand why this happened. The healing process will take
years, and it’s crucial to start right now.” The Child-Friendly Spaces will be set up in communities where emergency food and water has already been handed out. Children will also be given information on how to protect themselves and their friends – and how to prepare for future disasters. Another facility nearby will provide children’s health check-ups and promote mothers’ breast feeding, ensuring women get the right nutrition throughout the emergency. OPINION
OFWs a typhoon lifeline BY JASON GUTIERREZ
TACLOBAN, November 26, 2013 (AFP) – The Philippines’ giant band of overseas workers, already regarded as national heroes for toiling in foreign lands, are coming to the rescue again as they dig deep to send more cash back to their typhoon-hit homeland. With relief workers overwhelmed by the magnitude of this month’s disaster and unable to provide adequate support to the millions of survivors living in flattened towns, Filipinos abroad are proving a crucial, direct lifeline. In the ruined city of Tacloban, farmer Teudolfo Barmisa queued up at a money transfer outlet on Tuesday and withdrew the equivalent of $600 sent by his daughter who works as a maid in Hong Kong. “The money will go to buying food first, then other supplies to help us rebuild our home, like plywood and cement,” Barmisa told AFP. Barmisa was among hundreds of people withdrawing cash from financial outlets in Tacloban, many of which had just re-opened more than a fortnight after Super Typhoon killed at least 5,240 people and destroyed or damaged one million homes. Barmisa’s daughter and the other 10 million Filipinos working abroad are commonly referred to at home as “mga bagong bayani”, or “new heroes”, because of their sacrifices in leaving their families to work abroad. The number overseas is roughly 10 percent of the population – with many of them working as domestic helpers, labourers, sailors or in other low-paid professions – and they often send much of their savings back home to relatives. They are forced overseas because, despite impressive economic growth rates in recent years, the Philippines remains in large part a desperately poor country, and their remittances has long been an important plank for the nation’s economy. The overseas foreign workforce last year sent home $21.39 billion via bank transfers and other official channels, equivalent to nearly 10 percent of the Philippines’ gross domestic product. Even more money arrives unofficially. Overseas heroes give more And when a major disaster strikes in the Philippines, the amount of cash coming home spikes. Remittances jumped an average of 13-14 percent over the nine months that followed the country’s previous 10 deadliest typhoons, Patrick Ella, a Manila-based economist at the Philippines’ Security Bank, told AFP. A 14-percent increase over three quarters would equate to about $2.3 billion, based on last year’s remittances. “But Typhoon Haiyan was definitely an outlier, so the gains will probably be more than usual because of the extent of the damage and the well-publicised problems in the distribution of relief supplies,” he said. Haiyan was one of the strongest typhoons ever recorded and generated freak storm surges that swallowed up entire towns. The confirmed number of fatalities has made Haiyan one of the deadliest storms ever in the Philippines, and it could turn out to be the most destructive on record if, as expected, the death toll continues to rise. Exacerbating the catastrophe is that the worst-hit areas, the eastern islands of Leyte and Samar, are among the poorest in the Philippines, with most of the four million people there enduring near subsistence farming or fishing lifestyles. Barmisa, the farmer, said his family had managed to buy a vehicle, a small home and little shop on the outskirts of Tacloban using the money sent home by his daughter over the six years she had worked in Hong Kong. All of that was destroyed in the storm surges. “Hopefully, when she returns home we will have a house again,” he said, as he left the money transfer outlet with his daughter’s money.

No Christmas decor for mourning Kim Chiu
The Chiu family won’t be putting up the traditional Christmas decor in their house this holiday season, according to actress Kim Chiu, who lost her mother last June. In fact, Chiu said they are not allowed to display any symbol of happiness until June next year – or one year after her mother’s death. Chiu explained that they are just following Chinese tradition when there is a death in the family. The actress’ mother, Louella Yap-Chiu, passed away last June 23 due to aneurysm at the age of 50 in Cebu. To celebrate Christmas, Chiu said they will just have dinner, as well as go to church. But she clarified that there will still be gift-giving, especially with the children. “Hindi naman pwedeng iwala kay Rain (pamangkin) ang spirit of Christmas. Siyempre may gift siya, Chiu said. “Pero walang tree, walang decoration, wala – sad. The actress stressed it was their family’s decision to follow the tradition. “Choice naman namin ‘yon. Sabi ng lola ko, if we want, siyempre respeto sa mama ko. May Pasko pa naman. Wala nga lang yung symbols of Christmas sa bahay namin, Chiu explained. (MNS)

HEALTH & BEAUTY Smaller bowls help kids eat less: study
US researchers say that smaller bowls could help kids trim back on calories. Photo: wavebreakmedia ltd/shutterstock.com
(Relaxnews) – A new study suggests that smaller bowls could be an easy way to help children eat less, and therefore weigh less.
Announced last week, the US study involved 69 preschool children who ate cereal and milk from 8- and 16-ounce bowls until they’d had their fill. Children who ate

from the larger bowls asked for 87 percent more cereal and milk, the findings showed. “The quickest way parents can help kids eat less might be to grab them a smaller bowl,” said Brian Wansink, professor of behavioral economics at Cornell University and the lead author. In a second study, involving 18 elementary school children, researchers used secret scales embedded within the tables to weigh each cereal portion before and after the kids ate to measure exactly how much they consumed. The kids with larger bowls requested 69 percent more cereal and milk and also ate 52 percent more. “Bigger bowls cause kids to request nearly twice as much food, leading to increased intake as well as higher food waste,” said coauthor Koert Van Ittersum of University of Groningen. “Based on these findings, using smaller dishware for children may be a simple solution for caregivers who are concerned about their kids’ caloric intake.” The study was published recently in the Journal of Pediatrics. Previous research published in the Journal of Consumer Research last year supports the theory for adults too, finding that subjects who dined from smaller plates and bowls ate less. Another study published in the same journal found that people who use bigger forks also tend to eat less.

COMMUNITY US Execs, Fil-Ams join memorial for massacre victims BY NIMFA U. RUEDA
CARSON, California – Carson Mayor Jim Dear has cited the important role of journalists in society as he joined Filipino-American community and media groups at a memorial for the victims of the Maguindanao massacre at the city library here. “Journalists are essential to any democracy,” said Dear at the Nov. 23 event marking the fourth anniversary of the 2009 massacre in Maguindanao that left 58 dead, including 32 journalists. “As an elected official, I have issues with journalists, but at the end of the day I say God bless journalists,” he said. “You’re first responders. You’re there when the people need you. When there’s a tragedy or disaster, you’re there (with) the information that you’re able to convey to others, to the family members of people restricted by tragedies,” he said. Also honored at the memorial were the four Tacloban-based broadcast journalists who died while reporting the news during the Supertyphoon Yolanda (Haiyan). “Let us never forget the ultimate sacrifice that these journalists made for the public good,” said State Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco), in a statement read by his legal counsel, Alma Luna Reyes, during the memorial. Yee paid tribute to the journalist victims of the massacre and the four who died during the recent typhoon. “They died in the line of duty,” said Austin Baul, president of the the Filipino American Community of Los Angeles.
“They knew full well that their mission was fraught with peril yet they persisted to fulfill their duty to the people.” Baul criticized President Aquino for the slow pace of the trial and his failure to curb the continuing culture of impunity in the Philippines, where those in power commit murder and other abuses without being punished. The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines US Chapter, which organized the event, demanded the speedy resolution of the Ampatuan massacre case and other pending cases involving the murder of journalists. “The massacre also highlights the perils community journalists face....risking life and limb for peanuts while forced to live through, even being victimized by, the events they cover, such as those who perished during super typhoon Yolanda, who refused to abandon their posts to the very end,” said the NUJP statement that was read by actor and writer Bernardo Bernardo, who co- emceed the event with community leader Art Garcia. At least 58 people, including 32 journalists, were killed on Nov. 23, 2009, reportedly by the private army of the powerful Ampatuan clan to prevent a member of a rival clan from running in the 2010 elections. The massacre has been described as the single deadliest attack on media on record. Also attending the memorial was Carson Mayor Pro Tem Elito Santarina. During the event, award-winning journalist and author Benjamin Pimentel

DHS urged to stop deportation of Filipinos Fil-Am organizations urged to endorse extension of TPS Washington, D.C. – The National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) is calling on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to designate the Philippines as a country for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Currently allowed under immigration laws for countries impacted by a natural disaster resulting in a “substantial, but temporary, disruption of living conditions,” TPS will provide temporary immigration relief to undocumented Filipino immigrants presently residing in the U.S. In a letter to DHS Acting Secretary Rand Beers, Navarra wrote that “this benefit will alleviate their fears of deportation to a devastated country and allow them to work and stay in the US temporarily. With this authorization, Filipino nationals can continue providing material and financial support to the homeland, especially at a time when they are in dire need of help.”
J.T. Mallonga, NaFFAA National Vice Chair and President of the Filipino American Legal and Defense Fund (FALDEF), explains that there are precedents where the U.S. administration acted on similar requests. “Following the devastating earthquake which struck Haiti two years ago, the U.S designated TPS to Haitian nationals, allowing them to continue living and working in the country for 18 months,” Mallonga said. “The same should be done to Filipinos, and it must be done soon.” Other nationals from countries devastated by natural disasters, such as Honduras, Sudan and El Salvador, have also been granted TPS before. Mallonga further explains that “while TPS provides temporary legal status for Filipinos already in the US, it will not necessarily lead to permanent residency. Also, TPS does not provide humanitarian aid or legal status for people not already here.
announced that he was donating royalties from the sales of his latest book, “How My Sons Lost Their Tagalog” to the NUJP scholarship program for the children of the fallen journalists. The event was sponsored by the NUJP-US Chapter in cooperation with the Fil-Am Press Club of California, Frontliners, F7 Photographers (headed by Balita Photo Editor Benny Uy), Friends of the (Carson) Library, FACLA, Justice
for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) and Philippine Expressions Book Shop. The event featured a photo exhibit and performances by members of the local Fil-Am media, including Weekend Balita Executive Editor Rhony Laigo, Asian Journal photographer Andy Tecson and freelance writer and photographer Vics Magsaysay. Other performers included poet and artist Mat Relox and singers Mon Concepcion and Bennette Ibanez.

Caregiving: What I wish I knew then… said no. And that is a common theme that AARP hears from our members and older adults, in general. Most of us don’t consider ourselves formal caregivers; we are just taking care of our family. But what we did know is that taking care of Papa was hard, stressful and confusing. We didn’t know what services were available or how to screen providers. And we surely didn’t know that we needed to do to take time to care for ourselves. This was more than a decade ago and before I worked for AARP. Now, I know that there are services out there to specifically help the family caregiver. November was National Family Caregivers Month, and
BY CHRISTINA CLEM
About six months after my grandmother passed away, my grandfather’s health started declining. My brother and I weren’t surprised. We always assumed Papa would go first and without Nana around, life just couldn’t hold him. So, my brother and I stepped in to care for him. First, it was hiring someone to be at his house to help cook, clean and take him on errands. Eventually, we moved Papa in with my brother because he needed more personal care. During all of this time, my brother and I were doing what needed to be done. If someone had asked if we considered ourselves family caregivers, we would have shrugged and
more than four million family caregivers in the state of California are going through the same situation that I did. Now that I know better, here are a few things that I have learned - and that AARP recommends - to help keep you sane and healthy as you support your family’s needs: Ask for help. Make a “to-do list” and recruit relatives and friends to pitch in. Stay Connected. Getting together in person – or virtually – with friends and relatives can improve your spirits. Use community resources. Most communities have services that can help coordinate your loved one’s care and provide help with meals, housekeeping, grooming or transportation. Check your community’s services at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources’ Eldercare Locator by calling 1-800-677-1116. Take a break. Ask friends, relatives or volunteers to relieve you for an hour or two. For a longer break, turn to an adult day center or an agency that provides respite services. Find time to relax. Whether it’s reading, yoga, prayer or cooking – do something you enjoy to recharge. And laugh. Reading a funny book or watching a comedy can provide a much-needed break. Put your health first. You can’t do a good job of caring for someone else if you don’t take care of yourself. Be sure to eat nutritious meals, get enough rest, see your
doctor regularly and exercise. Deal with your feelings. Forgive yourself for feelings of anger. Consider joining a support group, talking to a spiritual advisor or making an appointment with a professional counselor. Get organized. Calendars and a journal can help you prioritize your responsibilities. Carry a list of your loved one’s medications (www.aarp.org/medicationrecord). Just say no. Accept the fact that you simply can’t do everything! Resist the urge to take on more than you can handle. Try to stay positive. Instead of dwelling on what you can’t do, pat yourself on the back for how much you are doing. You are not alone. It is important to nurture your own needs and take care of your own health so that you have the strength, presence of mind and stamina to help those who are depending on you. Caregivers may not be good at seeking help (my brother and I weren’t) – but help is out there – www.AARP.org/caregiving, community agencies with caregiver support services and health and social service professionals, including care managers. Web sites like AARP’s Caregiving Resource Center have a tremendous amount of information to navigate the ups and downs of caregiving. As I look back, my Nana and Papa would have wanted a resource like this for my brother and me.

PALA, CA, November 25, 2013 - Filipino pop stars and certified hitmakers Joey Albert and Nonoy Zuniga will headline the 2nd “Hanep sa Wow” Filipino Music Festival at the Infinity Showroom of Pala Casino Spa & Resort at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30. The festival lineup also includes Fe de los Reyes, Eva Caparas and Jet Montelibano – of the popular 80’s show band The Music & Magic. OPM singers Joey Albert and Nonoy Zuniga are both best known for their original timeless classic hits. JOEY ALBERT is a versatile Filipino pop and jazz singer whose string of timeless hits has become ingrained in Filipino music history. She has enjoyed an award-winning solo career for over 25 years that began when one of her first hits, “Tell Me” received a Gold Record Award from the Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI), establishing her meteoric rise as a major Filipino musical artist. “Tell Me” became such a mega-hit that other known musical artists, including David Pomeranz, recorded cover versions of the song. Joey’s other hits include “Over and Over,” “A Million Miles Away,” “I Remember the Boy,” “Points of View,” and Tagalog favorites “Yakapin Mo Ako,” “Iisa Pa Lamang,” “Ikaw Lamang Ang Mamahalin,” many of which have been immortalized as theme songs of many blockbuster TV drama series more popularly known as “teleseryes.” NONOY ZUNIGA’s singing career spans more than 3 decades, from a folk singer (1971 to 1975) to being one of the lead singers of the Family Birth Control Band performing in the best nightspots and hotels in Manila (19751980) to becoming a multi-awarded singer performing solo concerts in the U.S. and various parts of the world including Asia, Australia, Japan, South Korea, China and New Zealand. All his performances from 1983 to the present are well-acclaimed and mostly sold-out shows mainly due to his much-anticipated classic hit ballads like “Never Ever Say Goodbye,” “Kumusta Ka.” “Doon Lang,” “Bituing Walang Ningning,” his upbeat “Magandang Gabi” and other well-loved English standards that perfectly fit his deep baritone vocals. MUSIC & MAGIC which include lead members singer-comediene Fe de los Reyes, soul singer Eva Caparas and livewire performer Jet Montelibano, is one of the few elite singing groups during the ‘80s in the Philippines. After capturing the local concert scene and

With their varied repertoire swinging from an “Earth, Wind & Fire Medley” to The Blue Brothers’ “Everybody Needs Somebody”, the Weather Girls’ “Raining Men,” “The Best of Broadway” Medley, “Tagalog Novelty Medley,” and their well-loved anthem “I’ll Be There/Ain’t No Mountain,” the group brings their audiences down memory lane with concept production numbers that only Music & Magic can dish out. CHEESA is a Filipino-American Pop/R&B singer and songwriter most noted for her run on NBC’s The Voice in 2012 where she was chosen by Cee Lo Green, mentored by Babyface, and made it to the Quarter-Finals. The Voice provided Cheesa her first experience performing as a solo artist. After the season ended, she focused on developing her solo career and collaborated with fellow Filipina and international star Charice resulting in the release of the Asian iTunes chart-topping single, “I’m Not Perfect (featuring Charice)” a soulful power ballad advocating self-acceptance which reached #1 in Asia and #12 on the US Pop iTunes Chart. Following the success of her single, Cheesa released her debut studio album, “Naked,” in April 2013, which included “I’m Not Perfect” and a dubstep rendition of Britney Spears’s “Toxic.” MALOU TOLER and The Friends of Mine Band is a Los Angeles-based alternative rock and blues group that was recently awarded by ReverbNation as the Overall Top Winner of the 2013 Malibu Music Awards and Festival. Honda Accord wins green car prize at LA Auto show LOS ANGELES, November 21, 2013 (AFP) – The Honda Accord was named Green Car of the Year at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Thursday, beating shortlisted rivals from Audi, BMW, Mazda and Toyota. The Accord offers multiple versions including gas, hybrid and electric, and even the largest petrol engine V-6 model gets an impressive 34 miles per gallon (mpg) for highway driving. Its rivals for the environmentally-friendly prize, announced the day before the LA show opens to the public, were the Audi A6 TDI, the BMW 328d, the Mazda 3 and the Toyota Corolla. “The diversity of this field of finalists illustrates not only that green has gone mainstream, but also that there is no single approach to achieving ever-higher levels of fuel efficiency and environmental performance,” said Ron Cogan, publisher of Green Car Journal, which hands out the prize. “It’s accommodating, featuring the comfort and functionality expected of a mainstream sedan and incorporating the latest in on-board electronics and safety systems, although while delivering a satisfying driving experience.” “Importantly it excels with the versatile approach to environmental leadership.” American Honda senior vice president Mike Accavitti said the car “offers something for everyone,” adding that the green prize highlights “our shared vision of the future of low and ultra-low carbon emissions.”

2014 Kia Sorento named to ‘Top 10 Cars of the Year’ IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 26, 2013 – Kia Motors America’s (KMA) top-selling crossover utility vehicle, the 2014 Sorento, was recently named one of the “Top 10 Cars of the Year” by the Hispanic Motor Press Awards. The Sorento took top honors in the competitive crossover segment of the annual survey of influential Hispanic journalists by virtue of its sleek styling, improved ride and handling and outstanding value proposition with a base price of $24,1001. “Quality and value have universal appeal among car buyers, and the Kia Sorento offers both,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. “With its multiple trim levels and wide array of standard features – all at an affordable price – the Sorento has earned many accolades, and we’re honored to count the Hispanic Motor Press Awards recognition among them.” The Hispanic Motor Press Awards honor the Top 10 Cars of the Year annually at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Hispanic Motor Press Awards jury evaluates vehicles in 10 categories and in search of offerings that represent the best value, design, comfort, safety and functionality for Hispanic families. “The crossover segment is gaining popularity among consumers, and the size and attributes of these vehicles fit the needs of the family. The all-new Kia Sorento shows that this automaker is paying attention to what consumers want today. It won not because of its price, but because it is the best overall value in its class,” said the HMPA jury director,
Ricardo Rodriguez-Long. About the 2014 Sorento The 2014 Sorento is no mere midcycle refresh. It rides on an all-new platform and offers a new V6 engine, more passenger room and a new topof-the-line trim, the SX Limited. From a styling perspective, redesigned front and rear fascias incorporate new lighting elements, the 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheels have been redesigned and a larger 19-inch alloy wheel is offered on the SX as well as the all-new SX Limited. Inside, the center console, gear shift housing, instrument cluster, and soft-touch surfaces have all been redesigned. Other available features include second row sliding sunshades and heated front seats, panoramic sunroof, a programmable power lift gate, heated second row seats and more. The 2014 Sorento also features the next generation voice-activated telematics system, UVO eServices. Kia’s Unprecedented Growth Kia Motors America is one of only three auto brands to increase U.S. sales in each of the past four years, and in 2012 the company surpassed the 500,000 unit mark for the first time. With a full line of fun-to-drive cars and CUVs, Kia is advancing value to new levels of sophistication by combining Europeaninfluenced styling – under the guidance of chief design officer Peter Schreyer – with cutting-edge technologies, premium amenities, affordable pricing and one of the lowest costs of ownership in the industry. Kia recently moved up in the exclusive ranking of Interbrand’s “Top 100 Best Global Brands” after joining
2014 Kia Sorento
the list for the first time last year, and is poised to continue its momentum with seven all-new or significantly redesigned vehicles scheduled to arrive in showrooms in 2013. Over the past decade Kia Motors has invested more than $1.4 billion in the U.S., including the company’s first U.S. assembly plant in West Point, Georgia – Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia – which is responsible for the creation of more than 14,000 plant and supplier jobs. The success of the U.S.built* Optima and Sorento in two of the industry’s largest segments has fueled Kia’s rapid growth and is complemented by Kia’s comprehensive lineup which includes the Cadenza flagship sedan, Soul urban passenger vehicle, Sportage compact CUV, Optima Hybrid, the Forte sedan, Forte5, and Forte Koup compacts, Rio and Rio 5-door sub-compacts and the Sedona minivan.

Pacquiao would ‘overwhelm’ Mayweather – Freddie Roach BY DANIEL HICKS
Manny Pacquiao (right) of the Philippines lands a punch on Brandon Rios of the U.S. during their World Boxing Organization (WBO) International 12-round welterweight boxing title fight at the Venetian Macao hotel in Macau November 24, 2013. Pacquiao registered a decisive, unanimous decision win against American Rios to clinch the vacant WBO International welterweight title on Sunday. (MNS photo)
MACAU, November 25, 2013 (AFP) – Manny Pacquiao would “overwhelm” unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather with his lightning speed if the fight that fans crave takes place in 2014, according to trainer Freddie Roach. After Pacquiao returned to winning ways by demolishing former world lightweight champion Brandon Rios in Macau on Sunday, talk turned inevitably to the long-awaited mega-fight against eight-time world champion Mayweather. Promoter Bob Arum confirmed to AFP that Pacquiao, the only man to have held world titles in eight weight divisions, would next fight on April 12 in Las

Vegas, with one of his conquerors from last year – America’s WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, or Mexican arch-rival Juan Manuel Marquez – the likely opponent. After that they would try for Mayweather, who already has a fight scheduled against an as yet unnamed opponent on May 3. The earliest that “Pac-Man”, 34, and “Pretty Boy”, 36, could meet, a fight that could generate a record $300 million in pay-per-view revenues, is next September. “It’s a fight that should happen and where there is a will there is a way,” said Arum, following Pacquiao’s big points victory over Rios for the WBO International belt. “Particularly after that performance.” Roach said he would prefer a fifth meeting with Marquez, who knocked out Pacquiao on the most recent of their epic encounters almost a year ago, “to shut him up”. But then Roach wants victory over Mayweather. “That’s the fight the world wants to see,” Roach told AFP. “Mayweather in his last two fights has been slow, he doesn’t move as much as he used to. I think Manny’s speed will overwhelm him. Mayweather is not good against southpaws. And he has trouble with speed. “Manny Pacquiao, he’s back, but I never really had the thought he went anywhere.” Pacquaio told reporters he was ready to go toe-to-toe with Mayweather, but that the decision rested with the American. “My job is to fight and I will fight anybody who will fight me,” Pacquiao said. “I am willing to fight Floyd. So it is up to him.” Rios, wearing dark glasses to cover his battered features, agreed that Pacquiao’s blistering speed of punching and his fast reflexes had taken him by surprise. “He’s much faster than I thought he was,” Rios told a press conference. “He was great. I tip my hat to Manny Pacquiao. He still has it.” Rios’s trainer Robert Garcia also paid tribute. “I think everyone had that question after the Marquez fight: ‘Which Pacquiao are we going to see?’ I think we saw the best Pacquiao.” Pacquiao took more than two hours to get to his post-fight press conference, after having to supply two urine samples for dope testing by VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Organization) and the sanctioning body, the World Boxing Organisation (WBO). One of the biggest sticking points preventing Mayweather facing Pacquiao in the past had been the American camp’s insistence on strict drugs testing. That may have been removed now, with Pacquiao being tested frequently. So did Pacquiao foresee any other obstacles in the way of the fight? “You’ll have to ask him,” he said, referring to Mayweather.
