Strongest typhoon on record hits Visayas Deaths, destruction as ‘Yolanda’ makes history as strongest to make landfall

Residents clear the road after a tree was toppled by strong winds and damaged a van at the onslaught of powerful typhoon Yolanda that hit the island province of Cebu, Philippines Friday Nov. 8, 2013. Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded, slammed into the Philippines on Friday, setting off landslides, knocking out power in one entire province and cutting communications in the country’s central region of island provinces. (MNS photo)

MANILA, November 8, 2013 (AFP) – One of the most intense typhoons on record whipped the Philippines Friday, killing at least three people and terrifying millions as monster winds tore apart homes. Super Typhoon Haiyan smashed into coastal communities on the central island of Samar, about 600 kilometres (370 miles) southeast of Manila, before dawn on Friday with maximum sustained winds of about 315 kilometres (195 miles) an hour. It then swept across the central Philippines, destroying phone and power lines, as well as homes and vital infrastructure,

causing a massive communications blackout that left authorities without a clear idea of the extent of the damage. “It was frightening. The wind was so strong, it was so loud, like a screaming woman. I could see trees being toppled down,” said Liwayway Sabuco, a saleswoman from Catbalogan, a major city on Samar. The government said three people had been confirmed killed and another man was missing after he fell off a gangplank in the central port of Cebu. See TYPHOON, page 12

‘Not true…all lies’ – Janet Napoles MANILA, November 7, 2013 (AFP) – The alleged mastermind of a corruption scandal that has ensnared some of the Philippines’ most powerful politicians proclaimed her innocence Thursday as she appeared at a highly charged Senate inquiry wearing a bullet-proof vest. College dropout Janet Lim Napoles is accused of conspiring with members of parliament to siphon off about 10 billion pesos ($230 million) in government funds in a complex fraud operation that lasted for See NAPOLES, page 12

More congressmen in 2nd batch of PDAF cases – De Lima MANILA, Nov 6 (Mabuhay) – Justice Secretary Leila de Lima confirmed Wednesday there will be more congressmen included in the 2nd batch of cases to be filed in connection with the P10 billion pork barrel scam. De Lima said the second batch of cases was finalized after meticulously going over the evidence provided by the whistleblowers and other sources. She said the slow process led to the delay in the filing

of the cases. “We cannot yet tell you dun sa second batch. More on congressmen. Hinihimay namin ng maayos yung ebidensya. Yung talagang i-go-go naming, talagang kumpleto,” she said. Lawyer Levito Baligod, counsel of the pork scam whistle-blowers, earlier bared that more or less 10 lawmakers will be part of the second batch of respondents, compared to only 5 during the first batch.

Asked if administration allies will be among those who will be charged, Baligod said they are not looking at party lines, rather, on the strength of evidence in the possession of the whistle-blowers. She said the Inter-Agency Anti-Graft Coordinating Council will first pore over the evidence in cases where the evidence is weak. De Lima said National Bureau of See CONGRESSMAN, page 12

‘Virtual’ 10-year-old Filipina snares 1,000 webcam sex tourists BY NICOLAS DELAUNAY

THE HAGUE, November 4, 2013 (AFP) – A Dutch rights group said Monday it had identified over 1,000 pedophiles around the world by offering online sex with a computer-generated 10-year-old Filipina girl called Sweetie. Terre des Hommes Netherlands has now handed over to police the

identities of those who were willing to pay children in developing countries for online sex, a growing phenomenon, it said. “They were ready to pay Sweetie for sexual acts in front of her webcam,” the rights group’s head Albert Jaap van Santbrink told journalists in The Hague. The group said it wanted to See VIRTUAL, page 12

PHL checking on reports of abuse in Saudi crackdown MANILA, November 5, 2013 (AFP) – The Philippines said Tuesday it had deployed teams to check on reports of abuse in Saudi Arabia’s crackdown on illegal workers, after one woman complained they were treated “like animals”. Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said Filipino diplomats were in touch with the oil-rich kingdom’s human rights council to ensure the protection of Filipino workers there. “We have sent rapid response teams there, we have formed teams to visit jails, detention centers, police stations to make sure that our people are okay, and if necessary to issue them travel documents,” Del Rosario told reporters. “In terms of our meeting with the head of the human rights council in Saudi Arabia, we hope to be able to clarify (that we expect) that our people will be treated well,” he said. Del Rosario said there were believed to be 660,000

Filipinos working in Saudi Arabia although it remained unclear how many were illegals. He said that about 11,000 Filipinos had come forward to seek consular help in legalising their status or seeking exit permits since the Saudi government announced the crackdown early this year. An amnesty period for the illegals expired on Sunday. Del Rosario acknowledged that many of the remaining Filipinos in Saudi Arabia could be there illegally and faced detention and arrest if caught. “If they are arrested, I think it is very clear that they will be detained in preparation for their deportation,” he said. On Monday 30 repatriated Filipino illegals said they were badly treated by Saudi authorities. Domestic helper Amor Roxas burst into tears and told AFP that they were treated “like animals.” She alleged that Saudi police rounded up her and others and placed them in a crowded cell for four days. They were then paraded from immigration to the

airport with their feet chained, claimed another woman in the group. Del Rosario said they were seeking to interview the women to check on their complaints. Embassy staff in Saudi had said that they had not seen signs of abuse in an initial inspection of detention cells. Nearly 10 million Filipinos – about a tenth of the population – live and work abroad, and their remittances are a vital pillar of the economy. The vast majority work as unskilled laborers or domestic helpers and are exposed to situations in which they are prone to abuse. Saudi government issues new rules on violation of labor, residency rules after the correction period The Saudi Government has informed the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh, through a formal diplomatic note, of the new rules that will govern foreign workers violating labor and residency laws following the end of the correction period.

Committee on Ways and Means to prioritize fiscal incentives and customs modernization bills MANILA, Nov. 7 (Mabuhay) – The leadership of the House Committee on Ways and Means has sought the support of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in the passage of the panel’s top priority measures for the 16th Congress namely, the Rationalization of Fiscal Incentives Bill and the proposed Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA). Rep. Romero “Miro” Quimbo (2nd District, Markina City), committee chairman, sought the BIR and BOC support during a recent hearing of the panel which was attended by Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares and Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon who presented their respective agency’s targets and performance outputs. “We hope to get your support for the fiscal incentives and the customs modernization bills,” said Quimbo. Quimbo said the customs modernization bill has been pending for 21 years while the fiscal incentives bill for 19 years. “So I think it is time for us to pass them,” he said. The committee will formally ask for the BIR and BOC

positions on the two bills once the panel starts hearings on the measures. During the 15th Congress, the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading both House Bill 4788 or the proposed Customs and Modernization Act of 2011, principally authored by Rep. Maximo Rodriguez, Jr. (Party-list, Abante Mindanao) and HB 4935 or the proposed Investments and Incentives Code of the Philippines principally authored by Rep. Susan Yap (2nd District, Tarlac) on August 15, 2011 and transmitted these measures to the Senate three days later. In the 16th Congress, several bills seeking to modernize customs administration in the country have been referred to the Committee on Ways and Means among them HBs 5, 10, 166, 1348, 1461, 1583 and 3107. The CMTA bills seek to set international standards in customs operations and make import trade transactions faster, predictable, efficient and transparent. They also aim to promote and secure international trade, protect and enhance government revenue, prevent smuggling and other

fraud against customs and modernize customs and tariff administration. The bills aim to comply with the Revised Kyoto Convention (Convention on the Simplification and Harmonization of Customs Procedures) of the World Customs Organization to which the Philippines is a signatory. Meanwhile, HBs 130, 302, 1788, 2765 all seek to rationalize the grant and administration of fiscal incentives for the promotion and growth of investments. Most of the bills seek to empower the Board of Investments (BOI) to be responsible for industry development, policy formulation, investment promotion, and investment facilitation. The BOI shall formulate an Investments Priorities Plan (IPP) whose activities comply with the Medium Term Philippine Development Plan (MTPDP) and Medium Term Philippine Investment Plan (MTPIP) and satisfy the following conditions: substantial amount of investments; considerable amount of employment; use of modern or new technology; and installation of adequate environmental protection systems.

Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae to pay US $39-B

NEW YORK CITY, November 7, 2013 (AFP) – US mortgage finance giants Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae Thursday said they will pay the US Treasury $39 billion in dividends after reporting strong thirdquarter earnings. Freddie Mac will pay the Treasury $30.4 billion, while Fannie Mae will pay $8.6 billion. The latest payments take the two quasi-public bodies closer to effectively making US taxpayers whole after they received an infusion of government cash following the housing bust. After the latest payments, the two bodies will have paid the government $185.2 billion, compared with the $187.4 billion pumped into them after the housing bust. However, both companies remain under US “conservatorship,” with the US Treasury maintaining control through its preferred stock in both companies. Officially the dividends paid do not count against the funds deployed by the Treasury to purchase the preferred shares to support the companies. Lawmakers in Congress meanwhile have been debating how to restructure the firms now that they are profitable again, with some wanting to wind them down, to get the government out of the mortgage finance business. Both firms have benefited from the improving housing market, which has led to higher home prices and fewer foreclosures, requiring smaller loan-loss reserves. Freddie reported net income of $30.5 billion for the third quarter, up from $2.9

billion in the year-ago period. Freddie’s earnings were bolstered by a $24 billion tax allowance and by $900 million in settlements with Wells Fargo, Citigroup and SunTrust Mortgage relating to loans sold by the banks to Freddie that Freddie said did not meet standards. “Freddie Mac’s level of earnings in recent periods is not sustainable over the long term,” the company said in a news release. “Freddie Mac’s recent financial results have benefited significantly from strong home-price appreciation and the company expects home-price growth to moderate in future periods.” Fannie reported net income of $8.7 billion compared with $1.8 billion in the year-ago period. “Fannie Mae expects to remain profitable for the foreseeable future,” the company said, adding that earnings may “vary significantly” from quarter to quarter “due to many factors, such as changes in interest rates or home prices.” WF to settle mortgage complaint Wells Fargo said Wednesday it had agreed to pay $335 million to settle claims by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that it overstated the quality of mortgage securities it sold them. The US bank said the two state-controlled housing finance agencies had agreed to the sums having earlier pulled out of a class-action suit against it for overstating the quality of mortgage-backed securities it marketed in the run-up to the 2008-2009 financial crash.

PHL to buy eight Anglo-Italian attack helicopters MANILA, November 7, 2013 (AFP) – The poorly-equipped Philippine military said Thursday it is buying eight helicopters from Anglo-Italian firm AgustaWestland for 3.4 billion pesos ($78.7 million) to help in the fight against guerrillas. The eight AW 109 Power helicopters will be used mainly to support troops in battling insurgents but can also be used for maritime patrols and “territorial defense”, said air force spokesman Colonel Miguel Okol. “These will be armed helicopters for close air support... in general, it is for internal security operations,” he said. The twin-engine helicopters will be an

improvement over the military’s ageing fleet of US-made MG-520 attack helicopters since they will be able to carry more men and weapons and will be night-vision capable, he added. The Defence Department said the contract was for 3.4 billion pesos but gave no further details. Air Force vice commander Major General Raul Dimatatac said the new helicopters were urgently needed as the Philippines only had about seven MG-520 attack helicopters still flying. AgustaWestland said on its website that deliveries of the helicopters would begin next year.

The Philippine military is battling both a 4,000-strong communist insurgency in the hinterland as well as various Muslim guerrilla groups in the southern island of Mindanao. It also faces external challenges such as a territorial dispute with China over parts of the South China Sea.

Earlier this year, the navy announced it was acquiring three naval versions of the AW 109 Power helicopter. The cash-strapped Philippines has one of the weakest militaries in Southeast Asia but has been seeking in recent months to obtain new equipment.

Third navy commander, Malaysian charged in bribery scandal WASHINGTON, November 7, 2013 (AFP) – A third US Navy commander and a prominent Malaysian business leader were charged Wednesday in a widening bribery scandal involving prostitutes, luxury travel and multimillion-dollar government contracts, officials said Wednesday. Commander Jose Luis Sanchez, 41, was arrested Tuesday in Tampa, Florida and made a first appearance in federal court in Florida Wednesday. He was charged with taking payoffs from a foreign defense contractor in exchange for classified and internal US Navy information, the Justice Department said in a statement. Also named in a complaint unsealed Wednesday was Leonard Francis, 49, of Malaysia, the CEO of Glenn Defense Marine Asia (GDMA), the department said. He was arrested September 16, 2013, in San Diego, California. “According to court records, Sanchez allegedly provided Francis with internal Navy information, such as US Navy ship schedules – some of which were classified – and information about husbanding issues that could affect GDMA, in order to help GDMA win and maintain Navy business,”

the statement added. Two other top Navy officials – Commander Michael Vannak Khem Misiewicz, 46, and Naval Criminal Investigative Service Supervisory Special Agent John Bertrand Beliveau II, 44 -- have been charged separately in connection with bribery allegations. Meanwhile GDMA executive Alex Wisidagama, 40, of Singapore, has also been charged with participating in a related scheme to overbill the Navy for services provided in ports across Southeast Asia, the department said. “According to the allegations in this case, a number of officials were willing to sacrifice their integrity and millions of taxpayer dollars for personal gratification,” said US Attorney Laura Duffy. “While the overwhelming majority of the 400,000 active duty Navy personnel conduct themselves in a manner that is beyond reproach, we and our law enforcement partners at Naval Criminal Investigative Service and Defense Criminal Investigative Service continue to investigate the allegations of fraud and corruption that tarnish the stellar reputation of the US Navy,” she said.

More benefits for solo parents sought MANILA, Nov. 6 (Mabuhay) – Lawmakers are urging Congress to fast track the approval of a bill granting more benefits to solo parents. Reps. Emmi de Jesus and Luzviminda Ilagan (Party-list Gabriela) filed House Bill 2914 to amend Republic Act 8972, otherwise known as the Solo Parents’ Welfare Act of 2000. De Jesus said RA 8972 failed to address the solo parents’ financial needs in the wake of increasing prices of basic commodities and services. In addition to leave privileges under RA 8971, De Jesus said the bill would grant solo parents parental leave of not more than seven working days with pay every year. Under the bill, solo parents will get 10 percent discount from all purchases of clothing and clothing materials for

the child, for purchases made within a period of up to five years from child’s birth. They will also get 20 percent discount from all purchases of baby’s milk, food and food supplements, for purchases made within a period of three years from the child’s birth. Likewise, they will be granted 20 percent discount from all purchases of medicines and other medical supplements/ supplies for the child, for purchases made within a period of five years from the child’s birth. The bill provides that companies or businesses from whom discounted purchases in the immediately foregoing section are made shall be entitled to claim the said discounts as part of their business expense provided that,

Lawmaker calls for the creation of a national livestock health program MANILA, Nov. 6 (Mabuhay) – A lawmaker is proposing the creation of a national livestock health program to initiate and engage in various government activities at the national and local levels in support of livestock farmers. Rep. Delph Gan Lee (Party-list, AGRI) filed House Bill 2424, which seeks to improve the livestock industry by engaging in the research of alternative nutrition technologies such as feed substitutes. Lee said the livestock sector, which has consistently recorded positive growth, is eyed by the Department of Agriculture (DA) to be export-competitive ahead of the economic integration with the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region. According to the neophyte lawmaker, even President Benigno S. Aquino III mentioned in his speech during the

opening ceremonies of the Livestock Philippines 2013 on August 7, 2013 that the DA is drafting the Livestock, Poultry and Feed Crops Industry Roadmap, which was expected to be completed by the end of August. Lee added President Aquino stressed under this roadmap, more than 850,000 small corn farmers and backyard livestock and poultry raisers will benefit from initiatives such as feed farming-milling and livestock and poultry integration partnerships in the first three years of its implementation alone. Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said the livestock sector is a bright spot for agricultural competitiveness amid tough competition that is expected to be brought about by the elimination of tariff on most farm goods traded within the ASEAN region in 2015.

they maintain detailed and separate records. Covered by the bill are those whose annual income is P250,000 and below and who have been qualified by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Any person or company who violates the proposed act provisions face a fine of not more than P200,000 and may be ordered closed by the appropriate government agency. Furthermore, any person who misrepresents his or her status or falsifies any document to avail of the benefits of the proposed act also face six months jail term and a fine of not more than P50,000. “There is a pressing need for the state to be more involved in aiding solo parents in the rearing of their children,” De Jesus said. (MNS)

In filing the bill, Lee cited the declared policy of the State that recognizes that the agriculture sector provides food and vital raw materials for the rest of the economy. “The State recognizes that rising productivity and efficiency in the livestock sector are critical in maintaining the affordability of food and purchasing power, especially among the poor,” Lee said. Under the measure to be known as the “Livestock Health Program Act of 2013,” the Department of Agriculture (DA)

through the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) is directed to establish and manage a National Livestock Health Program that shall engage in various government activities from the national to the local levels in the form of support to livestock farmers. The Department is mandated to identify the most common and costly diseases that are preventable by vaccination and create a vaccination program for livestock that is both affordable and far-reaching.

Operation Kee Dee Alive Last November, Bethematch.org, a leading advocate and support system for those suffering from leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases will be holding a donor drive to save the life of Dianne Abang, who is known by her friends and family as Lady Dee. This event will take place from 12:00PM to 4:00PM at Lady Dee’s Day Spa, located at 155 S. Robertson Blvd. Dianne Abang “Lady Dee” will be providing refreshments and warm company throughout the day. Dianne Abang is in need of bone marrow transplant and is remaining strong in the face of adversity, yet she needs your help. If you are between the ages of 18-60 years old and are in good health then you may be able to help. Also, because Dee is of African ancestry, it would be a bonus if you are of African descent as well due to the nature of bone marrow transplants, however we are encouraging everyone to donate. Secondly, there is a possibility that a cord transplant (umbilical cord) will also work, so we are asking pregnant women of all ethnicities to consider donating their umbilical cord for a possible transplant.

The donation process itself is painless, quick and simple. You will have to swab the 4 corners of your mouth with 4 different labeled Q-tips to receive cell samples from the sides of your cheeks, and within two weeks if you are a transplant match, you will be notified by the Be The Match Foundation. For patients diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases, a bone marrow or cord blood transplant may be their best or only hope for a cure. Yet 70% of patients who need a transplant to do not have a matching donor in their family. They depend on Be The Match® and their supporters to find a match to save their life. Be The Match also provides one-on-one support to patients and their families throughout the transplant journey. Again, Dianne Abang and the Be The Match Foundation would like to sincerely thank you for your support, whether it be your attendance, a possible donor match, or simply your thoughts and prayers. If you are unable to attend the event and still want to help or if you have any questions please call 310-659-7082.

‘The Answer to Peace in Revelation’ speaker addresses Los Angeles students this Saturday, Nov. 9 Internationally acclaimed religious lecturer and peace activist, Man Lee, the founder of International Peace Youth Group, an international non-profit organization working with Los Angeles student groups to end conflict and war, will serve as the main speaker in a seminar that will be held this Saturday, Nov. 9, at University of Southern California. In the seminar, Lee is expected to discuss the method of peace hidden in the Book of Revelation in the Bible, a topic that has sparked attention from religious leaders of Buddhism, Catholicism, Judaism, and Islam in Los Angeles, organizers said. Lee has been featured in interviews with NBC and FOX for his campaign of peace in religion. The seminar is the finale of Lee’s 7th World Tour to meet with students, nation leaders and religious leaders around the world to promote the message of peace in religion. Just last Nov. 2, Lee organized hundreds of students from school organizations of UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal Poly Pomona, Pepperdine and Cal State Fullerton to come together to rally for peace aboard the SS Lane Victory in San Pedro, a fully operational cargo ship which was used during the Korean War to rescue refugees.

But the death toll was expected to rise, with disaster relief officials particularly concerned for isolated communities in Leyte and Samar provinces on the far east of the country. One of those communities was Guiuan, a fishing town of about 40,000 people that was the first to be hit after Haiyan swept in from the Pacific Ocean. More than 18 hours later, there had been no communication with anyone in the town. Communication was also cut to Tacloban, the capital of Leyte with more than 200,000 people that appeared to be badly damaged. Corrugated iron sheets were ripped off roofs and floated with the wind before crashing into buildings, according to video footage taken by a resident that was uploaded on the Internet before communications were cut. An ABS-CBN television crew also broadcast dramatic footage from Tacloban as Haiyan hit, showing flash floods that had turned the city’s streets into rivers. But the network said it had not heard from the crew since. An average of 20 major storms or typhoons, many of them deadly, batter the Philippines each year. The developing country is particularly vulnerable because it is often the first major landmass for the storms after they build over the Pacific Ocean.

Weekend, Sat. - Fri., November 9 - 15, 2013

The Philippines suffered the world’s strongest storm of 2012, when Typhoon Bopha left about 2,000 people dead or missing on the southern island of Mindanao. Haiyan’s wind strength made it one of the four most powerful typhoons ever recorded in the world, and the most intense to have made landfall, according to Jeff Masters, the director of meteorology at US-based Weather Underground. Haiyan generated wind gusts of 379 kilometers an hour on Friday morning, according to the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Authorities expressed confidence that the death toll from Haiyan would not climb dramatically, citing a massive effort starting two days before the typhoon hit to evacuate those in vulnerable areas and make other preparations. More than 748,000 people had sought shelter in evacuation centers, 3,000 ferries had been locked down at ports and hundreds of flights were cancelled, according to the national disaster management council’s spokesmen, Reynaldo Balido. “In terms of damage, we cannot avoid that...but the silver lining here is that the casualties are only three as of now,” Balido said in Manila. “It is possible that this will increase, but we don’t think it will increase that much more unlike in previous typhoons. The people have learnt their lesson.”

Napoles was taken from her detention centre in a convoy guarded by rifle-toting police commandos, and she was warned during the Senate proceedings that she had good reason to fear being killed. Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago said the senators accused of conspiring with Napoles were now hoping to kill her to ensure she did not testify against them. “Tell the truth before the senators affected have you assassinated, that is your path to safety,” said Santiago, one of the country’s most outspoken politicians against corruption. to be common. The fact is that if you are not divorced or annulled then your wife is considered to be a family member – like it or not. As a family member she must be declared on your application, she must complete forms, she must undergo a medical and provide police clearances. Another fact is that you will not be able to immigrate with your daughter unless the other parent gives signed/notarized consent. To make things go smooth, I suggest you file for a divorce and obtain sole custody. In that way, both problems are resolved. To get a divorce without knowing her whereabouts may require a motion to the court but is possible. Q. I’m a live-in caregiver in Canada. I have my open work permit. I will be giving birth to a child in Canada soon and I am planning to marry the father of the child early next year. The problem is that my fiancé is a failed refugee claimant. He has not been asked to leave Canada though. If we marry will he be able to remain in Canada? A. Unfortunately, marrying this individual could potentially jeopardize your application. All those years working as a live in caregiver will be lost. You may get refused and no one would be an immigrant. I am saying this because one of the requirements for you to become an immigrant under the live in caregiver class is that no dependant must be inadmissible or have an enforceable removal order. If you marry, your spouse is your dependant and he has enforced removal order. Either not marry or have spouse leave Canada. In rare situations it may be possible to marry and then discuss the predicament with the immigration officer who will advise when indeed spouse must leave. In my opinion, you are not getting a second opinion. You are actually getting a first opinion because any assistance (or lack thereof) from the consultant you hired is counted as zero. I am further confused as to your fear that the embassy would regard obtaining getting professional help as a negative thing. In my opinion, the embassy should be pleased to deal with a professional to relay pertinent information. Since your case has taken more than a few years it is likely that an interview was scheduled and you did not attend. On the other hand, if you were not under removal proceedings then I find it baffling as to why your application was sent to Manila instead of filing the application inside of Canada. It seems quite obvious that there are pieces of the puzzle missing and getting a second opinion would be the best thing to do at this point in the hope of salvaging the application. Q. Senate hearing on Napoles a ‘sabong’ – SC spokesman

MANILA, Nov 7 (Mabuhay) – Supreme Court spokesperson Ted Te on Thursday called the Senate grilling on controversial businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles a “sabong” (cockfight), saying it won’t help in resolving the investigation on the supposed pork barrel scam. “I know what the good Senator wants; it is what I and the public want. But let’s face it, this ‘sabong’ isn’t the way to get it,” Te said on his tweet, as the Senate committee hearing on the supposed multibillion-peso anomaly was ongoing. Blue ribbon committee chairman Senator TG Guingona as led Thursday’s grilling of Napoles, asking whistleblowers to repeat their sworn statements on the supposed scam and ordering her to react to the accusations. For the most part of the hearing, Napoles would either deny the allegations or invoke her right against self-incrimination. Also Te said “Perhaps the (committee) should have let the resource person [Napoles] testify first before the ‘face-off.’ No one in her right mind would say anything now.” Then Te went on to a “lecture” on cross examining a witness, saying they [senators] should “lead the witness” instead of asking Napoles. Te also said the Senate committee “is not a court and is not expected or mandated to weigh evidence or test credibility.” “’In aid of legislation” lang dapat, ‘di ba?” Te added, referring to the Senate’s power to conduct formal inquiries on the implementation or re-examination of any law or appropriation. Te said the committee should have allowed Napoles for an executive session. Napoles earlier requested for an executive session by which senators may grill Napoles in a closed-door meeting. Committee member Senator Alan Peter Cayetano earlier said even in an executive session, the senators may still report to the public the findings of the closed-door session. Te agreeS to this, saying senators could report the findings in the meeting. “After (executive) session, senators could then have excused her then reported what was said in summary. No self-incrimination excuse,” he said. “Ironic that Napoles suggested the solution – an (executive) session,” Te said. Napoles is currently facing three plunder complaints before the Office of the Ombudsman for her alleged involvement in the pork barrel and Malampaya Fund scams. She and her husband, Jaime, were also named respondents by the Bureau of Internal Revenue in a P61-million tax evasion complaint.

Atty Choi is pleased to announce that his administrator is Philip Abramowitz who has 30 years of experience in immigration law.) Question: I entered the U.S. in 1998 as a tourist. I did not know anyone here so I met a Filipino immigration attorney who told me that I could get a work permit fast through his office. I paid him lots of money and I did get a work permit after several months. However, I then discovered that he had filed for political asylum for me and that my asylum application was denied. I was placed in deportation proceedings and I had to see an immigration judge. I did not know what to do and the lawyer I had paid money to turned out to be a fake attorney. I just told the judge that I wanted to go home and he gave me voluntary departure in 2000. However, I did not have money to leave the country and I stayed here to work as a caregiver. Last year I married a U.S. citizen and she filed for my adjustment of status. However the USCIS rejected and denied my application saying that I was not eligible because I had been ordered deported already. I was told that I have to leave the country. Is this true? I am so shocked and upset that I do not know what to do. How can you fix my problem? Answer: I know that many newcomers to this country get the wrong advice especially from unscrupulous persons who are just preying on those who do not know any better and are easily taken advantage of. Regardless how you end up in deportation or removal proceedings, the truth is that persons who are already given voluntary departure by an immigration judge or are ordered deported have very little opportunity to obtain permanent residence. The law states that persons who are ordered deported and remain in this country cannot apply for any type of immigration benefit while still in the U.S. However, there are a few very important exceptions to the rule. 1. Never Received Notice of the Deportation or Removal Hearing: Often times the USICE mails a deportation hearing notice to the last known address of the alien that it has on file. This address could be incorrect and as a result the alien never receives proper notice of the hearing and fails to appear. Failure to appear for a deportation hearing can cause the judge to order the alien deported in absentia-or in the alien’s absence. The alien never

CHOIce IMMIGRATION CORNER

BY ATTY. PAUL CHOI knows about the deportation order until the ICE officers come to the alien’s home to arrest him. This is a shocking result. The law provides that persons who never properly receive notice of a removal hearing can seek reopening after learning about the deportation hearing. If the alien proves lack of notice, the Judge can reopen the case and give the alien a second chance to defend himself. 2. Good Reason for Not Attending Hearing: The law also provides that if an alien can show good cause for not appearing at the removal hearing, the judge has the power to reopen the deportation case and rescind any deportation order that may have been entered. Not any old reason for missing a hearing will do. The reason has to demonstrate a very serious cause for not appearing such as a terrible illness, an accident, an arrest or imprisonment or some other emergency that prevented attendance. Judges look at these excuses with much disdain so reopening after missing a hearing date is not an easy task. 3. There is new evidence to show to the Judge. The law provides that a removal hearing can be reopened if there is substantial new evidence that will affect your case that could not have been introduced before. Marriage to a U.S. citizen after a removal hearing and decision can be a substantial new fact that can be introduced on a motion to reopen after a Judge has ordered removal. However, the general rule is that the motion to reopen to introduce new material evidence must be filed within 90 days after the Judge’s order. 4. The Government Agrees to Reopen: Even though there are stringent restrictions on reopening removal hearings after the Judge has rendered a decision, removal

hearings can be reopened at any time if the government agrees. In this case, the government is represented by an ICE attorney. If this attorney stipulates to reopen an existing deportation case and to rescind an existing removal order, there is an excellent chance that the immigration judge will grant reopening even years after the deportation or removal order was entered. In your case, even if you were granted voluntary departure over ten years ago, if you are now married to a U.S. citizen and are still in this country it is very possible to seek the approval and cooperation of the government ICE attorney to reopen your existing removal case and cancel or terminate the removal order.. The government attorney is granted what is called prosecutorial discretion and this means that if he finds your claim meritorious, he can agree to reopen your old removal order to give you a second chance to get your permanent residence. We have been fortunate in having many old deportation and removal cases reopened five, ten or even twenty years after clients have been ordered deported. After the cases were reopened the judge agreed to terminate proceedings and the client who was previously a fugitive was permitted to be free from risk of arrest and eligible to file for adjustment of status to lawful permanent residence based upon the petition of a U.S. citizen spouse or adult child. Going from fugitive fearing arrest and deportation to lawful permanent resident can take as little as six months. It is truly a life changing experience. The moral of this story is that sometimes it pays to seek a second chance. Reopening of a prior deportation or removal order often times is a possibility. There are, of course, restrictions and we caution you to definitely seek the advice of a knowledgeable immigration attorney before proceeding.. A step-by-step guide to joining the Army By Alex Llorente

A full range of benefits await new American soldiers and their families. A career in the U.S. military can guarantee job security, unparalleled learning opportunities and some of the most unforgettable and worthwhile experiences. Here is a detailed overview of everything that you need to know about becoming a part of the strongest military force in the world – what you need to do, what you can expect and what you should avoid. The recruitment process is simple. All you have to do is visit one of the Army recruitment centers and talk to a recruiting officer. The Los Angeles Recruiting Battalion has 18 recruitment centers and 3 forward engagement centers that are staffed by a total of 220 active duty soldiers. Their service area includes Los Angeles County (except Palmdale) and Eastern Ventura County. To qualify as a new recruit, applicants must be between the ages of 18 to 35 years, in good health, physically fit, a U.S. citizen or on the road to U.S. citizenship. Additional criteria are used to determine the applicant’s placement or rank and may vary on a case to case basis. Generally, an applicant’s level of education, moral character, and personal or professional goals are considered. Interested individuals who are at least 17 years old can also qualify and avail of a “delayed entry,” which means they are technically accepted and wait until after their eighteenth birthday to begin their training. Before going to boot camp, applicants are required to finish High School or obtain a GED or equivalent credits. Legal U.S. residents can avail of an expedited citizenship program called Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI) which allows soldiers to

become U.S. Citizens usually by the time they graduate from boot camp. A visit to a recruitment center will involve the completion of application forms, submission of supporting documents, full medical or physical screening, a drug test, a written test, fingerprinting and an interview with a recruiting officer. The typical list of documents required to support the application include a valid form of identification, like a state issued I.D. card, drivers license, birth certificate or a U.S. passport, proof of citizenship or legal residency, medical records, high school diploma and a transcript of records. Applicants are asked to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test to determine their level of proficiency in Math and the English language. Applicants who speak a foreign language and very little English may be asked to complete ESL classes. Filipino immigrants who have completed a sophomore level of college education are usually asked to present proof of credits equivalent to 2 years of their college education in the Philippines. Applicants with families are also asked to provide the same list of documents for their spouse and their children. Recruits who possess a higher level of education are more likely to finish boot camp with an advanced rank or qualify for the Officer’s training program. No credits are given to any prior military training or service in a foreign country. Physical requirements will exclude applicants with a medical history or health conditions, such as Asthma, that may pose a challenge during the training process or the demands of being a soldier. The height requirement to become a soldier varies for men and women, and is usually above 4 feet two inches, and the weight require-

ment is usually as close as possible to a person’s ideal weight, depending on their height. Over or underweight applicants are usually asked to return at a later time after their weight issues have been addressed. Every applicant is asked to provide 3 references of persons not related to them. The recruitment center will conduct a background check on a qualified applicant. Any felony will automatically disqualify an application and misdemeanors are handled on a case to case basis. Regulatory infractions, such as a speeding ticket, must all be closed to move forward with the application process. Any foreign records, whether criminal or minor, must be disclosed. Once cleared, new recruits are usually sent to training within 2 weeks to one of

five training facilities in the U.S., located in South Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri, Georgia and Oklahoma. Boot camp lasts for ten weeks and every new soldier is guaranteed a job for the next two years. Depending on the circumstances, a new soldier can receive a ship date within 17 days to one year after graduation from boot camp, and will receive additional training or education depending on the job that they will be assigned to. Every new soldier must go to boot camp, whether they are on active duty or in the reserve. Recruitment centers are open Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with Saturday appointments available. Jessica Sanchez to return to Manila in December

“American Idol runner-up Jessica Sanchez is set to return to the Philippines in December. Sanchez made the announcement via her personal Twitter account on Friday. While no other details were divulged, the 18-year-old singer said she is looking forward to seeing her Filipino supporters once again. Sanchez’s December visit will be

her third time in the Philippines. She first set foot in her mother’s home country in late 2012 when she and her fellow “American Idol finalists held a concert at the Araneta Coliseum as part of the singing competition’s tour. Less than five months after, Sanchez again returned to the Philippines to stage her first solo concert which

was held on Valentine’s Day, February 14. At that time, Sanchez had her hands full as she was launched as an endorser of a Filipino fast food chain and a telecommunications company. Reports say Sanchez will be promoting her debut album “Me, You and the Music during her third trip to the Philippines. (MNS)

They focus on providing state-of-the-art, highly effective treatments for pain relieve, age reversal and overall health of their patients”. The YES PRP kit is very easy to use, preparation is fast and the high yield of growth factors, ensures the best results for my patients” PRP therapy uses components of the patient’s own blood called platelets. Platelets initiate repair and attract the critical assistance of stem cells to stimulate the body’s own ability to heal. PRP treatment has been used in sports medicine for many years by the NFL, PGA and NBA. This type of therapy is frequently used in professional athletes in an effort to prevent surgery for muscle, tendon and ligament injuries. PRP is rapidly emerging as a very effective technique for ostheoarthritis, shoulder, knee, spine, hip, tennis elbow, ankle sprain, back, neck injuries and many other uses including hair growth and as a rejuvenation treatment to stimulate collagen and elastin. (Relaxnews) – Women who look younger than their years may have lower risks of heart disease and stroke and a greater chance of outliving someone the same age but with more wrinkles, a study announced Thursday suggests. Published in the Journals of Gerontology, researchers from Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands and industry scientists from the multinational company Unilever studied 260 women whom they separated into two groups based on high and low risk of heart disease. The scientists also rated the women’s appearance by analyzing facial appearance and wrinkles on their upper inner arm, which is less likely to show signs of premature aging from the sun compared to the face. Findings showed that women who had fewer wrinkles and a more youthful appearance had lower blood pressure and heart disease risks. “We found that the feature in the face that blood pressure was linked to was not skin wrinkles but likely what we term as the ‘sag’ in the face. The exciting thing is further investigations will enable exact pin-pointing of the feature in the face that signposts an individual’s blood pressure,” said Dr. David Gunn, senior scientist at Unilever.

The plan

greatly benefits Immediate Relatives (IR) who are in the US, but are not eligible for adjustment of status. Individuals in this situation are primarily those who entered the US as a C-1 crewman, D-1 in transit, fiancé who did not marry the petitioning fiancé, without inspection, or someone who can no longer prove how they lawfully entered the US. The provisional waiver program is significant since IRs who are not eligible for adjustment of status may obtain permanent residency only by departing the US and processing the green card at a US Embassy overseas. The problem, however, is that most individuals who have been unlawfully present in the US become subject to a 3 or 10 year bar once they depart the US. The only way for an individual to obtain an immigrant visa and return to the US before the 3 or 10 years elapses is by being granted a waiver for the unlawful presence. To qualify for an unlawful presence waiver, an applicant must prove that he has a US citizen or permanent resident spouse or parent (not child) that would suffer extreme hardship if the applicant were not allowed to return to the US before the applicable 3 or 10 years. Under the provisional waiver program, an individual who would be subject to the 3 or 10 year bar submits the provisional waiver application while still physically in the US. The individual would travel overseas to the US Embassy only after safely knowing and receiving the approval of the provisional waiver from the DHS. The length of time the individual would be overseas for processing of the immigrant visa should therefore be just a few weeks. The provisional waiver process is available only to those who are applying for a green card under the IR category. This category includes those who are petitioned by a US citizen spouse or US citizen child, as well as a US citizen parent petitioning an unmarried child under age 21. Individuals applying for a green card based on another

family-based category or an employmentbased sponsorship are not eligible. Additionally, the provisional waiver process is available only to those who are able to demonstrate that they have a US citizen spouse or parent who would suffer extreme hardship. It is not available to those relying on a permanent resident spouse or parent suffering extreme hardship. Finally, the provisional waiver process is available only for the unlawful presence waiver. It is not available to individuals who are inadmissible due to another reason, such as fraud, criminal conviction, or prior deportation order. The DHS reports that it had granted 59% of provisional waiver applications between March 4 to Sept. 14, 2013. The DHS denied 39% of applications; however, only 41% of those denied were because they had failed to establish the required extreme hardship. The other 48% of those denied were because the DHS had reason to believe that the applicant was inadmissible on reasons other than just unlawful presence. Accordingly, unlike when the Embassy in Manila was denying practically all applications, Filipinos especially now have a good probability of being granted. Individuals should seize the opportunity that appears to now be available. Given the complexities of the waiver process, it is vital that individuals seek fully knowledgeable legal counsel. The provisional waiver process may finally be the solution to those who have been in limbo and aid families in finding peace and prosperity in this new year. For further information, please schedule an appointment with an attorney at Aquino & Loew, Immigration Law Specialists; (888) 797-1140 or (626) 7993089; info@aquinoloew.com. Offices in Los Angeles (South Pasadena), CA and Honolulu, HI. Please also visit Aquino & Loew at www.aquinoloew.com. Aquino & Loew also handles family law and criminal matters.

Bands to play at Tribute Two The Beatles at Josephine’s in Cerritos November 24

!!! Several bands, most of which are composed of Filipino-American rock artists, will play Beatles songs on November 24 during the Tribute Two The Beatles event at Josephine’s Bistro Restaurant in Cerritos, California. Organizers said performing bands will include RockingChair Band, No Dice Classic Rock, the so-called “Beatles of Pinas” the Rubbersounds, the “young Beatles” the Shave Fish, The Deltas and the Bits n Pieces of the old Manila music circuit. Other bands slated to play are local talents the Pasadena Klassics, Housewines Blues Band, Cocobola Club, Horse Exchange and Nervous Gender Project, some players of whom belonged to the biggest rock bands in the U.S. The bands will perform beginning at 4 p.m. in what is deemed to be the biggest rock jams of the year to hit Southern California. It was the Rocking Chair Band, who became a byword in the Fil-Am community after the First Battle of the Filipino Bands in 1994 in Cabrillo Beach, and who produced the First Fil-Am Tribute to The Beatles Concert in Los Angeles, according to Rommel Torres, one of the event organizers. Torres said the featured bands, guest musicians and other entertainers will all pay tribute to the greatest rock band on earth the Beatles, and will play only Beatles song cover. Torres said the first First Fil-Am Tribute to the Beatles was held last January 13,

also in Josephine’s Bistro. “It was a blast,” Torres said, “and most musicians in Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas , etc... came to gather and see the show and meet with other musicians.”

MOTORING 2014 Honda Civic Coupe ignites opening day of 2013 SEMA Show A significantly updated 2014 Honda Civic Coupe (http://automobiles.honda.com/2014-civic/) made its world debut at the 2013 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, offering a first look at new exterior styling updates to America’s best-selling1 compact car. Honda also announced that the performance-oriented Civic Si will benefit from increased power and larger wheels and tires, making both the two- and four-door varieties even more fun to drive. Honda also surprised performance enthusiasts by announcing plans to begin sales of street-oriented performance parts developed by Honda Performance Development, Inc. (HPD), Honda’s U.S.-based race engineering company, starting with a full range of performance accessories for the CR-Z sport hybrid coupe (http://automobiles.honda.com/cr-z/hpd.aspx) that go on-sale at Honda dealerships today. A power-boosting CR-Z supercharger package will follow in the spring of 2014. In the longer term, HPD engineers are also investigating other models and platforms in order to expand Honda’s street performance product line. “With the further advancement of the 2014 Civic Coupe and Si models and an exciting path forward for performance parts drawing on our racing experience we are making a statement about our commitment to the fun to drive character of the Honda brand”, said John Mendel, executive vice president auto sales for American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

The 2014 Civic Coupe and Coupe Si Following a major refresh of Civic Sedan styling for 2013, Honda turns its attention to the Civic Coupe and Coupe Si, implementing a host of exterior design changes that include a more aggressive grille, hood, front fenders and headlight design. Additional Coupe exterior changes include new taillight lenses, sportier front and rear bumpers, new side mirrors and new wheel designs. The Civic Si Coupe benefits from the same styling enhancements as the standard Civic Coupe but adds Si-exclusive design cues, including a unique lower front bumper garnish, larger rear decklid spoiler, a distinctive front spoiler and sporty rear air diffuser. The Civic Si Sedan picks up on these same cues, and both the Si Coupe and Si Sedan get larger, 18-inch (+1 inch) wheels and tires with new wheel designs. The performance-tuned Civic Si Coupe and Si

Sedan also get a retuned exhaust system that helps boost peak output to 205 horsepower2 (+4 horsepower) and 174 lb-ft of torque3 (+4 ft-lb). More details about the full 2014 Civic lineup will be made available at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show. Civics on Display On display at Honda’s SEMA showcase are a 2014 Civic Si Coupe, a 2014 Civic Coupe EX-L equipped with a Honda Genuine Accessories aero kit and 18-inch wheels, the HPD Civic Si Coupe Race Car and the HPD Civic Street Performance Concept, an aggressive street performance concept featuring many HPD racing parts that currently only are available for sanctioned race cars. Japanese automakers step on profit accelerator BY PETER BRIEGER

TOKYO, November 6, 2013 (AFP) – Japanese automakers are stepping on the profit accelerator as a weak yen, recovering US demand and the fading impact of a consumer boycott in China boost their bottom line. The sector’s buoyant half-year results underscore a firm recovery after the 2011 quake and tsunami devastated sales and production, and highlight a rebound in demand from some key markets. However a sharp decline in the yen over the past year was the key driver behind bumper profits. Toyota acknowledged the currency’s impact Wednesday as it said net profit in the six months to September soared 82.5 percent. Japan’s most valuable company also raised its annual earnings forecast. Toyota, the world’s biggest automaker, was the last of Japan’s major carmakers to publish half-year earnings after

Honda last week said its net profit soared on the weaker yen and stronger US demand. Smaller rivals Suzuki and Mitsubishi Motors also reported upbeat numbers. Nissan meanwhile said its half-year net profit rose 6.5 percent while sales rose 14.7 percent from a year earlier. However shares in Japan’s number two automaker plunged more than 10 percent Tuesday after Nissan slashed its full-year profit forecast, blaming a sluggish European market and expensive product recalls. Nissan said sales to China, which accounts for about one-quarter of its revenue, were also down in the wake of a Tokyo-Beijing territorial dispute that sparked a consumer boycott of Japanese brands. Toyota did not specifically address the issue of China, the world’s biggest vehicle market, on Wednesday. However Japanese automakers’ sales in the country

were dented in the wake of the diplomatic row, which flared again last year after Tokyo nationalised part of a small East China Sea archipelago also claimed by Beijing, setting off demonstrations across China and the damaging boycott. Toyota and Honda were less affected by the China sales downturn than Nissan, while the pair benefited more from a slide in the yen, which boosts their competitiveness overseas and inflates the value of repatriated foreign income. All three have said the damage from the territorial row is fading. “Japanese automakers have largely benefited from a cheaper yen,” said Tatsuya Mizuno, head of Tokyobased Mizuno Credit Advisory. “The US market is recovering to levels before Lehman Brothers’ collapse, and the sector’s presence is also coming back in China compared with a year ago when they were hit hard by the political dispute.

The new 2014 Toyota Corolla

Toyota Corolla nominated for ‘Green Car of the Year’ TORRANCE, Calif., Oct. 17, 2013 – The 2014 Toyota Corolla has been elevated to “green heights.” The Green Car Journal has named the eleventhgeneration sedan a finalist for the 2014 Green Car of the Year award and one of its top 5 Green Cars for 2014. The Corolla also earned the magazine’s ‘Green Car Product of Excellence’ distinction. Finalists were selected for “their achievements in raising the bar in environmental performance.” One selection factor is the model’s availability to the mass market, giving it the potential to make a real environmental impact. “The Corolla has been the world’s most popular name plate with over 40 million sold since 1966. The Corolla’s environmental sensitivity has evolved with the market. The new 11th generation of Corolla, and the new LE Eco model in particular, offer increased levels of capability and fuel economy,” said Bob Carter, Senior Vice President, Automotive Operations, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. The Green Car of the Year will be announced during media days at the L.A. Auto Show, Nov. 20-21, 2013. In a marketplace where innovation is always in style, Toyota is firmly focused on anticipating and elevating consumer trends. Meanwhile, Toyota Corolla is bringing fans the musical stylings of pop group AZIATIX. “Over the past few years Toyota Corolla has integrated the latest in music and pop culture for our Asian American market. The all-new Corolla continues to deliver on that commitment through our partnership with AZIATIX,” said David Chung, National Manager, Targeted Advertising and Strategy for Toyota. “With more dynamic

exterior styling, a spacious interior and updated technology, the new model will take drivers for an exciting ride.” Developed in partnership with its Asian American advertising agency, interTrend Communications, the Toyota “Get Corolla-Ready” campaign targets the Asian American market. AZIATIX created an original track, “Baby, Let’s Go,” featured in the primary broadcast spot of the campaign, which launches next week. Evoking the exciting, energetic and confident brand direction of Toyota’s tagline “Let’s Go Places,” the track builds on the momentum of physically going places and taking off on an adventure. As part of the campaign, Corolla is bringing AZIATIX to Los Angeles for an exclusive concert. Consumers can register for a chance to win prizes, including admission to the concert or an all-expense paid trip for two and a VIP backstage pass to meet AZIATIX. In addition, Toyota will be giving away prizes at the concert that promises to will “take you places.” More details at can be found at http://www.toyota.com/corollaready. Radically different than previous models, the 11th generation Corolla makes an immediate visual impact that challenges preconceptions about the vehicle. Its technology has been dramatically upgraded as well, including standard LED headlamps, Bluetooth audio and available Smart Key System with push-button start. Forty million people worldwide have bought a Corolla, more than any other car in history. Based on Polk U.S. Vehicles In Operation registration statistics, over 80 percent of all Corollas sold in the last 20 years are still on the road.

Toyota says H1 net profit surges 82.5%, boosts outlook TOKYO, November 6, 2013 (AFP) – Toyota said Wednesday that its half-year net profit soared 82.5 percent while it raised its annual earnings forecast as a weak yen and improving sales in North America boosted its bottom line. The world’s biggest carmaker said it earned 1.0 trillion yen ($10.14 billion) on revenue of 12.53 trillion yen, up 14.9 percent year-onyear. The maker of the Camry sedan and Prius hybrid also raised its fiscal year to March profit forecast to 1.67 trillion yen, up from 1.48 trillion yen previously. Toyota has ramped up its bid to tap emerging markets while key US demand has also been on the upswing, helping the

firm book ever-increasing profits. The automaker tripled its net profit in the past fiscal year with a slump in the yen helping Japanese manufacturers’ bottom line by making them more competitive overseas and inflating repatriated foreign earnings. Toyota acknowledged that cost cuts and the weaker currency helped boost its profit as global unit sales slipped about 1.0 percent to 4.46 million units.“In addition to the impact of the weaker yen, operating income increased due to our efforts with our suppliers and distributors for profit improvement through cost reduction and marketing activities, such as enhancement of the model mix,” Kodaira said.

PRAYERS

PRAYER TO ST. RITA

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit Thou who make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal, You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and con¿rm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Amen. A person must pray this for three consecutive days without stating his wish. After the 3rd day the wish will be granted, no matter how dif¿cult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favor has been granted. Grateful Thanks - ZGM

PRAYER to the BLESSED VIRGIN

Holy Patroness of those in need, St. Rita, your pleadings before the Lord are irresistible. For your lavishness in granting favors you have been called the "Advocate of the Hopeless". You are so humble, so morti¿ed, so patient, and so compassionate in love for your cruci¿ed Jesus that you can obtain from Him anything you ask if it is His Holy Will. Therefore, all con¿dently have recourse to you in the hope of comfort of relief. Be propitious toward your suppliants and show your power with God on their behalf. Be generous with your favors now as you have been in so many wonderful cases for the greater Glory of God, the spread of your devotion, and the consolation of those who trust in you. We promise, if our petition be granted, to glorify you by making known your favor, and to bless you and sing your praises. Relying then on your merits and power before the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we ask of you (mention your request) Many thanks -ZGM

(Never known to fail)

Oh most beautiful Àower of Mt. Carmel, fruit wine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea. Help me and show me here you are my Mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity. (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this prayer in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish and it will be granted to you. Grateful Thanks.- CINDY

Kia introduces refreshed 2014 Optima mid-size sedan LAS VEGAS, November 5, 2013 – Kia Motors America (KMA), one of the fastest-growing car companies in America over the last five years1, debuts a significantly updated version of its best-selling Optima mid-size sedan on the heels of the 2013 SEMA Show. Just three years ago, Kia turned the automotive world on its head when the Peter Schreyer-penned Optima was unveiled at the 2010 New York International Auto Show. Since then, Optima has become Kia’s sales leader, selling more than 150,000 units last year and gaining worldwide acclaim for its European-inspired design and fun-to-drive performance. The 2014 Optima, built in the U.S.* at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) in West Point, Ga., arrives with updated front and rear fascias, retaining the vehicle’s dynamic and sporty proportions. Now available in LX, EX, SX, SX-Turbo and SX-Limited trims, the Optima’s new premium amenities and convenience add fresh allure to this runaway success story. Improving an Icon of Design In a segment long known for bland functionality more than emotional appeal, the 2014 Optima cements the model’s status as a trailblazer combining style, substance and value. Refining the Optima’s sculpted, high-end appearance, Kia’s Frankfurtbased design team focused on the vehicle’s front and rear fascias and the brand’s signature tabbed grille. The vehicle’s bold stance and aerodynamic shape are further accentuated by updated rear diffusers and a sweeping trunk lid. Illuminating the European-inspired design are striking front LED positioning and fog lights, along with bright, newly

SPORTS Former world champs Donaire, Darchinyan set for rematch Pacquiao ‘expecting’ to beat Rios, no retirement plans BY PETER HUTCHISON

HONG KONG, November 6, 2013 (AFP) – Philippine boxing great Manny Pacquiao said Wednesday he was expecting to defeat American Brandon Rios in Macau later this month, but insisted if he did lose he would not retire. The 34-year-old, once regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter of his generation, faces the bout of his life in the semiautonomous Chinese territory as he bids to break a losing streak and keep his boxing legacy intact. “It’s one of the most important fights of my career because I want to show my fans and the world that I can still compete at a high level with elite boxers,” Pacquiao, speaking from his training camp in the Philippines, told reporters during a group phone interview. A former champion in an unprecedented eight weight divisions, Pacquiao – who turns 35 in December – is seeking to come back from two consecutive defeats which have led supporters to question if he should hang up his gloves. His seven-year, 15-fight winning streak came to an end in June 2012 with a controversial split decision loss to Timothy Bradley. It was followed six months later by a sensational sixth-round knockout defeat to Mexican arch rival Juan Manuel Marquez. But “Pac-Man”, as he is known to his fans, insisted the losses have not affected him psychologically, and said he did not contemplate being defeated by Rios in the former Portuguese colony on November 24. “I am expecting to win this fight,” he said of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title bout. “It’s a really important fight for me in my boxing career because I lost the last two,” Pacquiao added, pledging an “aggressive” strategy.

NORM REEVES

SUPERSTORE WEST COVINA

CORPUS CHRISTI, November 5, 2013 (AFP) – Filipino star Nonito Donaire and Australian-based Armenian southpaw Vic Darchinyan meet Saturday in a 10-round featherweight rematch of former world champions trying to revive their careers. Donaire stopped Darchinyan in the fifth round in 2007 at Bridgeport, Connecticut to claim the International Boxing Federation flyweight title, the Asian star’s first world title and Darchinyan’s first career defeat. Six years later, Darchinyan wants to avenge the only knockout loss of his career, one that ended his 2 ½-year flyweight reign and put himself in the world title picture after losses in two of his past four fights. “After I beat Nonito the champions will want to fight me,” Darchinyan said. “I will stop him. I want to show the world it’s not about him. It’s about me. I have the skill. I have the power. I’m prepared mentally against him. I know everything he is going to do and when he comes I’m going to demolish him. “I’m very motivated for this fight. I lost to him. I’m going to come and expose him. I’m going to show all the world I can beat him easy.” Donaire, 31-2 with 20 knockouts, tries to bounce back from his first pro defeat, a unanimous-decision loss last April to unbeaten Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux in a super bantamweight world title bout. “The motivation is definitely back,” Donaire said. “I just realized I want to box. After the loss I realized I want to be in this game as long as I can. “I just have to recall how I became a world champion, the process and the desire, and bring all that back into my boxing style. It starts with the mental and being excited for the fight and I’m very excited for this fight.” Darchinyan, 39-5 with one draw and 28 knockouts,

has gone 11-4 with a draw since losing to Donaire, who turns 31 a week after facing the 37-year-old Armenian. “This isn’t about age. it’s about how confident you are with your training for the fight,” Darchinyan said. “I’ve trained very well for this fight. I have waited a long time for this fight. It doesn’t matter how old I am.” Darchinyan said he lacked patience in 2007 after winning his 10 prior fights inside the distance and was tagged with a left hook he dubbed a lucky punch that knocked him down for the first time in his career. “I had never experienced a knockdown. I jumped up straight away,” he said. “If I take a couple seconds and recover, it would be the more smarter play. Now I’m a different fighter. I’m smarter. Now I have more experience with being knocked down. “I want to show I have skills and power and that I can do something big.” Donaire, who underwent right shoulder surgery after losing to Rigondeaux, says “I don’t need to prove anything” when it comes to backing up his earlier triumph, but says he sees little from that fight that will help him in this one. “I don’t look back at it,” Donaire said. “We have grown so much in terms of style and power. It’s all about who shows up Saturday. It’s an older, smarter me. I’m not just looking to go in there and brawl. “Vic is a very dangerous opponent you can’t overlook. When you have the power age doesn’t matter.” Donaire is working with his once-estranged father Nonito Snr for this fight after becoming a father himself. “When I had my kid I started to realize my dad was always there for me,” the younger Donaire said. “It just worked out with my dad and he’s helping me out. I’m glad things happened the way they did.”
