Open air surgery to help quake victims Rescuers struggle to help isolated survivors BY JASON GUTIERREZ
LOON, October 18, 2013 (AFP) – Surgeons were planning to save lives on open-air operating tables in a hospital carpark Thursday as rescuers struggled to help isolated survivors of a powerful earthquake in the Philippines which has claimed at least 172 lives as of Friday. Road access to the worst-hit towns on the central island of Bohol remained cut, two days after the 7.1-magnitude quake destroyed buildings and triggered landslides that engulfed homes and highways, regional civil defense chief Minda Morante said. “I hope the people will understand. While we want to bring aid to them, our main adversary is accessibility,” Morante told AFP. “We acknowledge that there are still gaps in the emergency response. We cannot address the many needs all at the same time.” See SURGERY, page 12

Napoles might name senators in scam – Cayetano
President Benigno S. Aquino III visits Cebu to assess the extent of damages in the quake ravaged province on Wednesday (October 16). US commits to ‘stand by’ quake-hit PHL MANILA, Oct 16 (Mabuhay) – The United States promised on Wednesday to “stand by” the Philippines after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit some of its provinces and claimed the lives of at least 107 people. “America has always stood by the Philippines in times of need and we do so now,” the US Embassy in Manila said in a statement. It likewise expressed its “deepest condolences for the tragic loss of life and injuries as well as damage caused by the earthquake in Bohol.” The death toll climbed to 107 as of Wednesday, and at least 276 were wounded. Of those wounded, 166 were in Bohol, 106 in Cebu, three in Siquijor, and one in Negros Oriental. Several heritage churches were also severely damaged, with some even trapping churchgoers.(MNS)
MANILA, Oct 17 (Mabuhay) – What are the possible scenarios in the upcoming testimony of businesswoman and alleged pork barrel mastermind Janet Lim Napoles? According to Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano, it is possible that Napoles might link some senators to the alleged misuse of billions of pesos in priority development assistance funds (PDAF). “We don’t know what to expect when she testifies. Will she tell the truth or will she lie? Some senators said – paano kung guluhin niya o sabihin kakilala niya o nabigyan niya lahat ng pondo? We have to trust the people to make their own judgment on who is telling the truth,” he said. He said a similar situation occurred when former Commission on Elections commissioner Virgilio Garcillano accused some
lawmakers of having benefited from poll cheating. The debate on whether to call Napoles, the alleged architect of the pork scam, to testify in the Senate probe was earlier left to Senate President Franklin Drilon, but he twice refused to sign the subpoena for Napoles. Drilon signed the subpoena on Wednesday after being vilified in the media. Senator Teofisto “TG” Guingona III, chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, said the panel might summon Napoles next week. He said the subpoena for Napoles will be issued on Thursday, October 17. Guingona said there will be no guidelines on what the senators can or can’t ask Napoles. He doubts, however, that Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla will be See NAPOLES, page 12
Remittances grow fastest in seven months – Bangko Sentral MANILA, Oct 16 (Mabuhay) – Money sent home by Filipinos who live and work overseas quickened to its fastest pace in seven months last August, fueled by sustained deployment of workers abroad, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said Wednesday. Cash remittances – money sent through banks and transfer agents – grew at annual rate of 6.8 percent to $1.918 billion in August, preliminary central bank data showed. This is the fastest growth rate since January’s revised 8 percent increase, according to central bank records.
Total cash transfers grew by 5.9 percent to $14.545 billion in the first eight months of the year, above a Bangko Sentral forecast of 5 percent for 2013. “The steady deployment of OF (overseas Filipino) workers remained one of the key drivers of the growth in remittance flows,” Bangko Sentral noted in a statement. According to Philippine Overseas Employment Administration data, approved job orders in January to August rose 39 percent annually, primarily in services, production and technical jobs See REMITTANCES, page 12

Time running out for victims in Bohol rubble as quake deaths hit 172 LOON, Bohol, Oct 18 (Mabuhay) – Survivors of a powerful earthquake that killed more than 172 people in the Visayas rummaged Wednesday through ruins for friends and relatives, as rescue workers struggled to reach isolated communities. The 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the central island of Bohol on Tuesday morning, ripping apart bridges, tearing down centuries-old churches and triggering landslides that engulfed entire homes. The number of people confirmed killed on Bohol and neighboring islands climbed from 93 on Tuesday to 160 on Friday as the full scale of the disaster became clear, and there were no tales of miracle rescues. At Loon, a small coastal town of about 40,000 people just 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the epicenter of the earthquake, shocked survivors used their bare hands to scour through the rubble of their homes. “We’re trying our best to keep hopes up, but in this desperate situation there is nothing much we can do beyond giving comforting words,” local priest Father Tomas Balakayo said as he stood in front of Loon’s destroyed limestone church. “I try to be strong but this is terrible, what have these people done to deserve this?” Loon farmer Serafin Megallen said he dug with his hands, brick-by-brick, to retrieve his mother-in-law and cousin from the rubble of their home on Tuesday. “They were alive but they died of their injuries three hours later. There was no rescue that came, we had to rely on neighbors for help,” he said. With destroyed bridges, ripped-open roads and power outages fragmenting the island of about one million people, authori-
ties said it had proved difficult for police and government rescue workers to reach isolated communities on Wednesday. Loon was one of the most badly affected communities, with 42 people confirmed killed there so far, according to Bohol police chief Senior Superintendent Dennis Agustin. But for most of Wednesday the only people involved in the search and rescue efforts were local residents and police, with only a few rescue workers arriving by boat, and no heavy equipment that could have plied through the rubble. Four people were believed to have been inside Loon’s Our Lady of Light church when it collapsed, according to Balakayo, the priest. He said they remained unaccounted for, but locals had given up hope they were still alive. In front of the rubble of the church an improvised altar had been erected with a lone statue of the Virgin Mary, where teary residents stopped by to make the sign of the cross. Ten churches, many of them dating back centuries to Spanish colonial rule of the Philippines, were destroyed or badly damaged on Bohol and the neighboring island of Cebu. A team from the National Commission on the Culture and Arts (NCCA) is already in Bohol to inspect the damaged churches there, with priorities on the six national cultural treasures. In Cebu, at least 86 classrooms in schools need rehabilitation that may cost up to P83 million, according to state-run Philippine Information Agency. “DepEd_PH report says 86 classrooms in Cebu need rehabilitation. Estimated cost

is P83 million,” the PIA Cebu office said. The PIA said inspections showed cracks on walls and flooring, and “dismantled” parts of the ceiling in affected Cebu schools. Most of the deaths were on Bohol, which is one of the most popular tourist islands in the Philippines because of its beautiful beaches, rolling Chocolate Hills and tiny tarsier primates. The number of confirmed fatalities on Bohol jumped to 141 as authorities in isolated towns restored communications and reported dozens more deaths, the head of the province’s information office, Augustus Escobia, said. Nine people died on Cebu province, home to the Philippines’ second-biggest city of the same name, while another
person was confirmed killed on nearby Siquijor island. Survivors were further tormented on Wednesday by incessant aftershocks, including some exceeding 5.1, according to national disaster authorities. President Benigno Aquino visited Bohol and Cebu to oversee rescue efforts, and sought to reassure survivors as the number of aftershocks surpassed 800. “The bottom line is we do not have to fear that something stronger than... (Tuesday’s quake) is coming,” Aquino said in a nationally televised meeting with cabinet members at Tagbilaran, Bohol’s capital. The Philippines lies on the so-called Ring of Fire, a vast Pacific Ocean region where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

PHL to buy 12 orean fighter jets SEOUL, Oct 18 (Mabuhay) – The Philippines and South Korea have agreed to fast-track the process for the Philippines to buy 12 lead-in fighter jets as part of the Armed Forces modernization plan. The Philippine government is allotting P18.976 billion for the purchase of these 12 brand new jets that would primarily be used to train pilots and increase the capability of the military to patrol the country’s borders. “Meron tayong tinatapos both in their laws and our laws, ‘yung sa procurement. Medyo napakahaba nung mga details eh. Pero bottom line, both sides agreed to try and expedite the arm purchase and their delivery of these planes,” President Aquino said Thursday. Aquino and his South Korean counterpart, President Park Geun-hye witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries on defense cooperation. Peter Galvez, spokesman for the defense department, earlier said the Philippines is eyeing FA-50s manufactured by Korea Aerospace Industries. The Air Force decommissioned F-5s in 2005, leaving the country without leadin fighter aircraft to address external threats, such as in the West Philippine Sea. President Benigno S. Aquino III’s father, Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., was honored Friday by the Korea Journalists Society and Korea War Correspondents Association for “his gallantry and valuable contribution for world peace” as a war correspondent during the three-year period of the Korean War.

Authorities to focus on rehabilitation of hospitals, other public buildings in quake-hit Bohol and Cebu MANILA, Oct 17 (Mabuhay) – Interior Secretary Mar Roxas on Thursday said they would focus on the rehabilitation of public buildings – including hospitals and evacuation centers – in quake-hit provinces of Bohol and Cebu to accommodate victims. “Well, ang pinasisiguro ng Pangulo ay ang kaligtasan ng mga gusali. Nagpadala ng structural engineers at in coordination with LGUs, (pinasisiguro) na itong mga public buildings, hospitals, arenas, gyms, na ginagamit na panglikas, at schools, ay ligtas. Iyon ang pinaka-priority,” Roxas said. He noted that some homes in affected areas collapsed, and residents are in need of temporary shelter. “Physically, bumabalik na sa normal

It’s really the rehabilitation, lalung-lalo na sa mga gumuho ang kanilang mga bahay, mga tirahan, kung saan magkakaroon ka lang ng temporary shelter, bago mabalik sa permanente ang kanilang mga tahanan,” he said. He added that in Cebu City Medical Center, patients are still being served at an open area as authorities are still determining if the hospital building is safe enough for operation to continue inside. “Ang problema kasi, itong Cebu City Medical Center, hindi pa nasisiguro kung ligtas ang gusali mismo. Mayroong mga bitak, mayroong crack, at malakas ang tama ng lindol rito, kaya hindi naman pwede ibalik sila sa loob,” he said.

Its museum features relics dating back to the early 16th century. Recent historical accounts regarding this Jesuitbuilt church was that this was the most preserved structure among the churches in Bohol. It was declared a National Historic Treasure in 1994. The church of Our Lady of Assumption in Dauis was also heavily damaged. The “style of the Dauis Church was influenced by both Byzantine and Romanesque architecture. On its ceiling were frescoes influenced by Michelangelo’s ceiling frescoes in the Vatican, painted by church artist Ray Francia in 1916. In a published interview with Tagbilaran Bishop Leonardo Medrosa, the church in Loon was “totally damaged, and the church in Carmen also “collapsed. On his facebook account, a fraternity brother of this writer, Ivan Henares who is the current President of the Heritage Conservation Society (HCS) said “we join the rest of the Philippines in prayer as we recover from the damage of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Central Visayas on the morning of October 15, 2013. We mourn the loss of life as well as property. Published reports also quoted Mr. Henares when he called the attention of government cultural agencies, particularly the National Commission for Culture and the Arts ( NCCA), National
Historical Commission of the Philippines and the National Museum and requested them to “take the lead in restoration efforts and move as one. Further, Mr. Henares called on “heritage professionals and experts from both the public and private sector to convene and plan the proper reconstruction and restoration of the damaged cultural properties. According to Architect and HCS Secretary Richard Tuason Bautista, he stated that the churches were apparently “inadequately prepared for the earthquake. Further, he said that “as early as the 1970’s, the church authorities have undertaken rehabilitation work through the years. Buttresses were even built, it’s just that this earthquake is very strong. In his assessment based on the photos of the most damaged churches, Bautista said that “the rehabilitation may not have resolved the issue of foundation. He also noted that “aside from the facades, various late additions to or extensions of the churches suffered structural damage. He cited the Loboc Church as the sample case being near a river. He said he “experienced seeing the church’s perimeter walls had holes with crabs inside. He also learned that he has seen crab infestation in other Bohol churches. If left unchecked, these crabs can affect the stability of the churches in the long term. Both HCS officials, Bautista and Henares said that the “preservation and conservation of historic edifices, wherever they may be located , should be the concern of all FIlipinos. On his twitter account, Ivan Henares said: “It is sad that many people talk about heritage only when it’s gone. Hopefully, this is a wake-up call for everyone.

Lani Mercado-Revilla (2nd District, Cavite) filed House Bill 104 proposing to change the current school calendar from June to September to ensure the safety of the students, teachers and their guardians from waterborne and flood-related diseases as well as street-repair accidents. “The changing of the school calendar will help lessen the dangers posed to their health like respiratory diseases, dengue fever and leptospirosis, especially when classes are abruptly suspended or cancelled because of the rains and floods that threaten
the safety of these individuals, MercadoRevilla said. Mercado-Revilla cited the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s (PAGASA) report stating that 19 to 20 typhoons visit the country every year beginning June up to September. “For the past years, the torrential rains and heavy floods have often disrupted classes in all levels resulting in the suspension and irregularity of school days, Mercado-Revilla said. “As much as 25 to 30 days are subtracted from the school calendar, as recorded in the previous years, Mercado-Revilla added. Mercado-Revilla said only the Philippines and Brunei are the countries

Central Health Plan receives Senior Choice Gold Award for Excellence in 2014 Medicare Plan Benefits in Los Angeles & Orange Counties COLUMBUS, Ohio, October 15, 2013 – Central Health Plan is one of 40 Medicare plans nationally to be recognized for cost-sharing effectiveness and value in the design of their 2014 medical and Part D prescription drug benefits for Medicare beneficiaries. Central Health Plan’s Medicare plan is the only Medicare Advantage plan offered in Los Angeles and Orange counties to qualify for the 2014 Senior Choice Gold Award. The award recipients were selected from over 140 Medicare managed care plans based on cost-sharing comparisons conducted by HealthMetrix Research Inc., a national independent managed care research firm. In announcing the 2014 Senior Choice Gold Award recipients, HealthMetrix Research and MedicareNewsWatch.com president Alan Mittermaier pointed out the importance of the award for Medicare beneficiaries: “This award addresses the concerns that beneficiaries may have with both Medicare plan performance and the out-of-pocket costs incurred after they enroll. Central Health Plan has demonstrated a commitment to delivering maximum value in the design of their plan benefits, copayments, deductibles, and premiums. Coupled with achieving exemplary measurable performance, informed beneficiaries can rely on this award as an indication of overall high value and quality. The award selections were based on the 2014 estimated cost-sharing comparisons conducted in over 100 cities during October 2013 by HealthMetrix Research Inc. The annual comparisons estimate the out-of-pocket costs for beneficiaries based on health status categories (healthy/ episodic/chronic) and corresponding utili-
zation of the most common plan benefits (physician office visits, emergency or urgent care, hospital care, prevention care, prescriptions). The comparisons identify the Medicare plans with the lowest and highest estimated annual out-of-pocket costs based on the approved 2014 member copayments, See CENTRAL HEALTH, page 8

City of Carson pays tribute to Fil-Am labor leader Larry Itliong Oct. 25 The City of Carson and the Confederation of Filipino American Association will join the entire community in honoring the life’s work and legacy of Larry Itliong – a Filipino-American labor leader and organizer. The tribute will take place at 6 p.m. at the USW-Local 675 Union Hall, located at 1200 E. 220th Street in Carson. The event is open to the public and admission is free. The event will feature music, refreshments, inspirational messages and awards presented to the labor awardees, Pilipino Worker Center of Southern California and Louie Diaz. Larry Itliong was responsible for organizing immigrant farm workers and cannery workers for over 30 years. He helped establish the Alaska Cannery Workers Union in the 1930s and helped get a contract that called for eight-hour days with overtime pay. In 1965, Larry Itliong led the successful “Great Delano Grape Strike” to protest the low wages and miserable working conditions.
In 1966, he led the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee and merged with the National Farm Workers Association led by Cesar Chavez to form the United Farm Workers union. In 1970, Larry Itliong founded and became the president of the Filipino American Political Association (FAPA), the first national political Filipino American organization and a crucial alliance between Filipino professionals with 30 active chapters throughout the United States. On October 2010, Carson City Council passed a resolution establishing October 25 as Larry Itliong Day in Carson. City officials are encouraging the community to take part in observing this special day by attending this event honoring the life’s work and legacy of Larry Itliong who promoted and fought for the well-being of all California’s Farm Workers. For more information about this event, please call (310) 830-7600 ext. 1000 or Fe Koons at (310) 987-8886.

In the port of Tagbilaran, the provincial capital, boats were offloading injured victims from other parts of the island, while emergency rations were being loaded onto separate vessels to take to more remote areas, an AFP photographer saw.Patients waited to be operated on in the parking lot of a provincial hospital, their beds sheltered under makeshift tents because the main building was already filled with injured survivors. “Rescuers took two hours to get me. I lay pinned down next to two young customers who were crushed to death,” said John Espanola, 19, a college student pulled out from a collapsed Internet shop in Sagbayan town with a suspected broken arm. “I prayed hard. I knew there was a pos-
sibility that I would not get out of it alive,” said Espanola, the only survivor in a building collapse that killed five people. Morante said helicopters were being used to evacuate some of the injured as well as resupply the isolated towns with emergency food rations. Tens of thousands of survivors had taken refuge at government-run shelters in public buildings left standing on Bohol, while others were sleeping in tents beside their homes, terrorized by aftershocks, she added. The search for 21 missing people had focused on the coastal town of Loon and neighboring Antequera, which were close to the earthquake’s epicenter, Bohol police chief Senior Superintendent Dennis Agustin told AFP.

Search and rescue teams had reached those areas by boat and narrow dirt roads over the past 24 hours, he added. In the upland farming village of Cantam-is, about 10 kilometers (six miles) from Loon, Salvador Bonito waited on Thursday for help beside a large pile of mud, rocks and debris that was once home to three of his friends. “Rescuers from our church tried to
reach the buried house, but we had to give up because the ground kept shifting due to aftershocks,” Bonito told AFP, adding they had yet to receive outside help. “We leave it up to God.” National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council spokesman Rey Balido said the number of people confirmed killed in the earthquake had risen to 161, up by 10 from Wednesday.

in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Qatar. Listed Bank of the Philippine Islands’ (BPI) lead economist Emilio Neri Jr. gave a bank’s perspective to remittances. “August was disaster ridden, and we have an observation that remittances tend to rise during periods where domestic concerns are high,” he said in an interview by telephone. In August, a string of weather disturbances battered the main island of Luzon. Seasonal trends dictate cash remittances will continue to grow until this month, according to the BPI economist. “Overseas Filipinos tend to send money back home ahead of Christmas season,
after that we’ll see a normalization of remittances at around 5 percent,” he said. Cash remittances mainly originated from the US, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Canada, and Japan. Overseas cash remittances hit a record $21.391 billion last year, up 6.3 percent from the $20.117 billion in 2011. Meanwhile, personal remittances – which include transfers in cash and in kind through banks and hand-carried deliveries – reached $2.1 billion in August, up 7.4 percent year-on-year. Personal remittances in January to August grew by 5.5 percent to $16.034 billion. (MNS)

against your spouse after 30 days. You can also file a proposed judgment for the court to approve. The default procedure can be done even if there are issues of property division, custody, visitation, and support. However, the Court will still review your proposed judgment and property division to make sure it conforms to the policy towards equal division of community property. Meaning, you have to propose a division of community property that is pretty much equal between the spouses. If your proposed property division is one sided such as distributing all community property to you and giving all the community debts to your spouse, the Court would probably not grant your judgment. The Court would probably set a hearing for you to explain why this is an equal division of community property. The only time you may need your spouse’s signature is if your spouse files a response to your divorce petition. This is called “contesting the divorce. If your divorce is contested by your spouse, you can resolve the case either by “settlement or by “trial. However, you do not have to settle all the issues in the case at once. Under the concept of divisible divorce, you can settle some of the issues and set the other issues which you and your spouse cannot agree on for trial. Our office will try to resolve cases through settlement because it is more cost effective and the parties are usually happier with the outcome. In that situation, the parties may avoid the cost and uncertainty of going to trial by executing what is called a stipulated judgment which is in essence an agreement as to all the issues in the divorce case. For issues which you and your spouse
cannot agree on, you will have to go through the litigation process which involves obtaining discovery, exchanging declarations of disclosures, and preparing the case for trial. Ultimately, you will obtain your divorce at trial in addition to adjudication of the distribution of community assets and debts amongst other issues. It is in the best interest of the party to retain the representation of competent counsel who will assert his or her rights under the family code. PHL SSS conducts outreach mission in L.A. The Social Security System (SSS) kicked off it’s 12-day outreach mission to eight North American cities with a community briefing at the Philippine ConsulateGeneral in Los Angeles last Oct. 11. President and CEO Emilio S. De Quiros, Jr., led the SSS delegation accompanied by Senior Vice President for International Operations Judy Frances A. See, Vice President Maria Lourdes N. Mendoza, and Foreign Representative Roberto Roldan of SSS Hong Kong. During the briefing at the Rizal Hall of the Philippine Consulate General, SSS President De Quiros said that their visit to North America was their way of bringing their services closer to overseas Filipinos. He assured the audience that the SSS is continuously exploring ways to improve its operations, services and related systems. He also happily announced that the SSS has moved its service delivery from branch-based transactions to internet-based channels in order to give their clients the flexibility of transacting with the SSS within the comfort of their own homes. SVP See encouraged the audience to enroll in their Flexi-Fund Program for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
your income. This is why a lot of people have found it necessary to work two jobs just to make ends meet each month. One paycheck goes to feed the family, the other paycheck goes to feed the sharks, I mean, the creditors. Take a sheet of paper, a pen and your calculator. On the sheet of paper, write down your total take-home income (after taxes) at the top of the page and below it, list all the debts that you pay each month. Figure out where your money goes. What percentage of your total net income goes to paying debts? Is it 25%, 50% or more? The higher the percentage, the more serious your situation might be. If the percentage is high, what are you doing about it? Do you have a debt elimination or debt reduction strategy that can get you out of this unpleasant situation? If you are overwhelmed with credit card debts and would like to look into the possibility of a Chapter 13 debt consolidation, my office provides a free personal consultation. If you have regular income from any source (pension, retirement income or even family contributions are acceptable), you may qualify to file for Chapter 13 and pay only a fraction of the total amount
owed. And at 0% interest, you can usually get out of debt in as short as 3 years. It doesn’t matter how much you are paying now each month. In Chapter 13, you may qualify to reduce that amount by 50% or more. Of course, every case is different and requires the evaluation of a competent bankruptcy attorney. If a payment plan is not possible because of a shortage or lack of income, you may also consider filing for Chapter 7 to wipe out your debts. To schedule a free personal consultation, please call Toll Free 1-866-477-7772. It may be possible to negotiate settlements with your creditors without filing bankruptcy. If bankruptcy is the only option, let us carefully review your situation and find out whether Chapter 13 or Chapter 7 is advisable. Cruz also cited the historical ties between the Philippines and Korea that took root during the Korean War. “We helped them during the rehabilitation of their country,” he said, adding that Koreans “have very high regard for Filipinos.” During the Korean War in 1950, the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea joined the UN-led coalition in defending the freedom of the Korean people. Until today, both countries recognize this as the bedrock of Philippine-Korean relations. (MNS)

with a charging document at the outset of proceedings. The charging document is an Order to Show Cause (OSC) in deportation and exclusion proceedings and a Notice to Appear (NTA) in removal proceedings. Also, the court must properly serve the respondent with written notice of all hearings. Question: What Information Must the Government Put in the Notice? Answer: The charging document must include: the nature of the proceedings, the legal authority for the proceedings, the acts/conduct alleged to be in violation of the law, the charges against the respondent, notification of the right to be represented by counsel, and the requirement that the respondent must provide a change of address or telephone number. The notice also must inform the respondent of the consequences of not providing a change of address (i.e., that the he or she may be ordered removed or deported in absentia). The notice of hearing, whether contained in the charging document or as a separate notice, must state the time and place of the proceedings and must inform the respondent of the consequences of failing to attend the hearing. Question: What are Proper Methods of Service? Answer: There is a presumption of effective delivery where the evidence indicates that the notice was properly served. However, if the respondent can show that the notice was not served properly, the presumption of effective delivery should not apply and thus there is no need to rebut the presumption. The following are the service requirements: The nature of the requirements have chnged over time. However, for Removal Proceedings Filed On or After April 1, 1997, the NTA and notice of hearing may be served in person or by mail, but there is no requirement that the NTA be mailed by certified mail. Regular mail is sufficient. Consequently, signatures of receipt are not required. Question: How Does the “Change of Address Requirement Affect Proper Service and Can the Notice Requirements Be Satisfied Without Actual Receipt? Answer: ICE may mail the NTA to the
last address on file for the respondent. This may be the address that was included in an affirmative application that was filed with U.S. United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). However, respondents cannot be ordered removed or deported in absentia until they are warned (by receipt of the NTA or OSC) that they may be ordered removed or deported in absentia as a consequence of failing to inform the government of a change of address. Thus, individuals who failed to report a change of address and do not receive the NTA or OSC as a result, cannot be ordered removed in absentia. Question: How Can the I Prove that I Did Not Receive Notice Even If the Record Shows that It Was Mailed to the Correct Address? Answer: Some of this will depend when the deportation notice of your hearing was mailed. However, the presumption of effective service can be overcome if the respondent demonstrates non-delivery or improper delivery by the U.S. Postal Service. Non-delivery or improper delivery can be established by submitting substantial and probative evidence, such as documentary evidence from the Postal Service and affidavits. For example, if there were ongoing problems with the mail delivery, you may want to provide details about the problems and affidavits from people with direct knowledge of the problem. In determining whether the respondent has overcome this presumption, the immigration judge must consider both circumstantial and corroborating evidence, and may consider a variety of factors, including (but not limited) to: Respondent’s affidavit; Affidavits from family members and other individuals who are knowledgeable about the relevant facts; Respondent’s actions upon learning about the in absentia order and whether he or she exercised due diligence in seeking redress; Any prior affirmative application for relief or application filed with USCIS or prima facie eligibility for relief (to help establish an incentive to appear); Previous attendance at immigration court hearings; and Other circumstances or evidence indicating possible non-receipt. Thus, there is a significant amount of work to be done on a Motion to Reopen a deportation order issued in absentia, but if done properly, it can work and proceedings can be reopened. Brian D. At least 16 others also died on the neighboring islands of Cebu and Siquijor. “Nakakalungkot dahil ito... Nag-iiyakan nga ‘yung mga kasama ko sa bahay dahil puro lahat taga-Bohol. Successful showdown of Kapuso stars in Dubai After last year’s sold-out anniversary show in Los Angeles, GMA International recently flew to the Middle East to celebrate its 8th year by bringing four of its biggest stars to the blazing deserts of Dubai for the very first time. Held on September 27 at the Sheikh Rashid Auditorium, Indian High School, the Kapusong Pinoy Sa Dubai: A GMA Pinoy TV Concert featured no less than Asia’s romantic balladeer Christian Bautista, GMA’s fierce songstress Rachelle Ann Go, Asia’s pop sweetheart Julie Anne San Jose, and GMA’s primetime queen Marian in a twopart musical extravaganza. My-HD, GMA’s exclusive direct-tohome distribution partner of its international channels in the ME region, partnered with GMA International to make the event possible. The Kapuso stars certainly did not disappoint their fans, who came from different parts of the Middle East, just to see them perform live. Marian had everyone on their feet as she eagerly danced with members of the audience sending everyone immediately in high spirits. Marian happily shares that her excitement for the Dubai event was apparent even before she left the Philippines, “Masaya kaming lahat dahil during rehearsals pa lang sa Manila, excited na kami mag-perform sa ating mga Kapuso sa Dubai.” The Kapuso primetime queen went on to say that she was quite nervous to be performing alongside professional singers, “Sa araw ng show, kabado ako, kasi puro singers ang kasama ko. Because supportive sina Rachelle Ann, Christian and Julie Anne, kinaya ko pong makipagsabayan sa kanta at sayaw. First show pa lang po ay
super sarap ng pakiramdam dahil sobrang init ng pagtanggap nila sa amin kaya pagdating ng second show, mas lalo pa naming binuhos ang performance namin. Hindi namin naramdaman ang pagod dahil parehong puno ang venue ng mga Kapuso natin na nagsusumikap mag-work sa Dubai. It’s really an experience that I will treasure.” Meanwhile, Sunday All Stars mainstays Christian and Rachelle Ann gave memorable performances - both together and apart - and proved that their chemistry on stage is still as strong as ever. “Performing for our kababayans in Dubai was a great experience,” says Christian about his first time to grace a GMA International event. “I love the connection that we were able to share with them. And I hope to visit them again soon as well our kababayans from other countries.” On the other hand, Rachelle Ann, who frequently joins events spearheaded by GMA’s international business unit, expressed her appreciation and fondness for the Dubai-based Kapuso fans. “It’s always nice to perform for our kababayan in Dubai. Napaka-warm nila and very welcoming, which made it even more memorable,” she recalls. “Masarap makita na napasaya namin sila kaya sana makabalik ulit kami sa Dubai.” Julie Anne, who returns to Dubai for the second time, echoes the same feeling saying that, “it was overwhelming to perform [there].” Proving what a quintuple recording artist is made of, Julie Anne serenaded the crowd with a medley of love songs that only left them wanting for more. According to the Kahit Nasaan Ka Man lead actress, she took the concert as an opportunity to give back to
our modern day heroes in the Middle East. “The hard work they do not just for themselves but also for our country is something we cannot easily repay. So I’m really grateful that I am one of those privileged artists who got to perform for them,” relates Julie Anne. Mark Reyes, who skillfully directed the concert, encapsulates it all saying that, “Sulit ang malayong biyahe, puyat at pagod ng buong produksyon dahil ramdam na ramdam namin ang pagmamahal ng mga Kapuso natin sa bawat palakpak, halakhak at pagbigay puri nila sa dalawang konsyertong inalay namin para sa kanila. Salamat at mabuhay ang mga Kababayan nating

New York restaurant serves up silent treatment NEW YORK CITY, October 17, 2013 (AFP) – At the table, silence is golden, especially in noisy New York. That’s the gamble a young restaurant owner is taking with patrons, who are prohibited from talking during four-course meals. The project, launched a month ago at Eat in Brooklyn’s fashionable Greenpoint neighborhood, has created a buzz in a city where restaurants are often so noisy that they trigger routine complaints. Customers have to reserve days in advance for the privilege of eating without speaking or hearing a word on Friday or Saturday night in the small room that seats 25. “I want to provide the opportunity for people to experience the food with a kind of intention and attention to the experience that isn’t usually afforded by a loud meal, especially in New York City,” manager Nicholas Nauman told AFP. Customers who dare break the golden rule during the $40 prix fixe meal are forced to finish their plate on a bench outside. Sitting at long, wooden tables adorned with stoneware, the clients play along while tasting a menu based on local organic ingredients.

Special Collagen Straight Rebonding We the members of the Park Jun’s Beauty Lab’s study really hard to make our customers satisfied. We are very happy to see many Filipino customers who recognize our salon, because they have one in Philippines.
Today, I am going to introduce how to DO hair rebonding without getting any damages. We have studied long enough to find our own technique. First: We need to check and know cus-
tomer’s hair precisely. People have different hair conditions, even its shapes and curls are various. Therefore, to do this straight rebonding, we need to KNOW our customer’s hair right. Since this product contains chemicals, we got to be hair doctors. Second: To do Rebonding, since everyone has different hair condition and curls, we use different amount of chemicals for each customer. Our secret technique: we put Japanese PPT treatment before we start doing rebonding to protect your hair. Especially for those of you who have just colored their hair. It’s better if you cut the damaged parts of your hair first. Third: If you have natural hair, which means you didn’t color your hair or permed your hair, we can use regular straight chemicals and all we have to do is set precise time to make your hair beautiful. However, people who did self-coloring at home, we need to put Collagen mixed with chemicals to make your hair healthy and elastic. To make your hair fabulous and healthy, we need some fancy special products and we must use it to protect your hair. Lastly, if you have serious curls, there is no way

the king would be thrown into the lions’ den. Daniel learned of the decree but did not change his habit. Just as he had done all his life, he went home, knelt down, faced Jerusalem, and prayed to God. The wicked administrators caught him and told the king. King Darius, who loved Daniel, tried to save him, but the decree could not be revoked. At sundown, they threw Daniel into the den of lions. There were 30 lions in the den! The king could not eat or sleep all night. At dawn, he ran to the lions’ den and asked Daniel if his God had protected him. Daniel replied “My God sent His Angel and He shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king.â€? Scripture says the king was overjoyed. Daniel was brought out, unharmed, â€œâ€Ś because he had trusted in his God.â€? King Darius had the men arrested who falsely accused Daniel, and along with their wives and children, were all thrown into the lions’
den, where they were immediately killed by the beasts. Then the king issued another decree, ordering the people to fear and reverence the God of Daniel, YAHWEH. Daniel prospered under the reign of Darius and King Cyrus the Persian after him. Even though Daniel was already 80 years old, he refused to abandon God. He could have easily avoided the accusation that the administrators lodged against him by not worshipping God for thirty days. The threat of being eaten by lions did not change his trust in God. NOV. 2 AT CENTINELA VALLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Teleserye Bida stars 5 of the PHL’s hottest male actors ’
V ENTERTAINMENT and Bayona Productions are excited to present “Teleserye Bida” on November 2, 2013 at the Centinela Valley Center for the Arts in Lawndale, CA. The concert features five of the Philippines’ hottest male actors and screen idols – Enchong Dee, Gerald Anderson, Rayver Cruz, Xian Lim, and Enrique Gil – with comedian John Lapus. These five male artists are known collectively as Teleserye Bida, because they are stars and lead actors in the top-rating telenovellas that are avidly followed by the Filipino community around the world through The Filipino Channel (TFC). All are managed by Star Magic, the homebased talent agency of ABS-CBN, the Philippines’ No. 1 TV network, whose shows are seen by Filipinos around the world through TFC. All are award-winning actors and certified matinee idols; all have done shows in the United States and have been very well received; most have been tapped as models and commercial endorsers because of their wide appeal. Rayver Cruz comes from the famed Cruz clan of actors, singers and musicians. He appears on the noontime variety show “ASAP XV.” A 20-year veteran who started as a child actor, he has been seen in dozens of TV shows. As a rising star, he starred in the GMA show “Kiss Muna,” then moved to ABS-CBN, where his first lead role was in the series “Spirits” as Red. He played another lead role, Mythos in “Rounin.” Recently, Rayver essayed perhaps his most important role so far, in the inter-
nationally acclaimed Erik Matti film, On the Job, currently screening in U.S. and Canada theaters. Rayver plays Bernabe, the hothead aide and buddy to Atty. Francis Coronel (played by Piolo Pascual), as they probe a spate of high-profile killings. Rayver and Piolo join an elite cast that includes Joel Torre, Joey Marquez,Angel Aquino, Leo Martinez, and Michael De Mesa. (For more details including theaters and viewing times, visit https://www.facebook.com/OnTheJobMovieUS or www. OnTheJob-Movie.com). Enrique Gil is an actor, model and dancer who became famous for portraying the role of BJ in the teleserye “Budoy,” and Prince Jao/Dasho Jao in “Princess and I.” In the Philippines, he’s also known as the Dougie King for his signature dance moves to the song “Teach Me How to Dougie.” After dancing to “Gentleman” by Psy at Vice Ganda’s concert, he is now hailed as Gentleman King. He was voted No. 1 in the 100 Sexiest Men in the Philippines 2013. But he is more than just a hunk. Enrique Gil received good reviews on his acting skills for portraying the role of the heart-diseased Francis dela Vega in “Muling Buksan Ang Puso,” one of ABS-CBN’s current toprating drama series. Rayver Cruz and Enrique Gil are just two of the hottest and most talented young Filipino actors gathered for one special concert on November 2: “Teleserye Bida.” For tickets, contact V Entertainment at (818) 458-9258 or visit www.ventertainment.biz; or GF Bayona Productions at (562) 964-3434 or visit www.gfbayona.

15-50 % off on beauty treatments & products For Thanksgiving, Colina Salon is giving back with glamorous discounts COLINA Salon is enjoying a banner year, thanks to the support of its loyal clients. First, it has expanded with three salons running in 2013, the latest in Rancho Cucamunga. All its major promos – Bonanza Savers, Colors of Spring and Summer Sizzlers—were wildly popular. So were the breakthrough products it introduced to the market: Colina Cosmetics and MC Hair Care. And last month (Sept. 8), Colina Salon mounted Make-up 101, a one-day seminar-
Marlou Colina with Peaches and Herb
workshop at the Doubletree Hotel Norwalk that was by all accounts a runaway success. Colina Salon was very visible in the community, as a sponsor of the year’s most successful live events so far: Fides Ecclesiae, a musical based on the lives of Saints Pedro Calungsod and Kateri Tekakwitha in February at Pantages Theater; Side A Live at The Grove of Anaheim on April 21; “For Da Laffs,” on June 28 at Alex Theater in Glendale and June 29 at Pala Casino in San Diego; and Stylistics with Peaches & Herb live at Pala Casino-Palomar Starlight Theater on October 5.
All these were in no small part to the credit of CEO and founder Marlou Colina, who himself made major inroads into Hollywood this year: styling for the family of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein at the Oscars, and Hunger Games star Dakota Hood at this spring’s GLAAD Awards. But the humble Marlou gives all the glory to their clients, whose loyal patronage inspires him and his tea to do more and give the best value for their money. That is why in this coming season of Thanksgiving, Colina Salon invites clients new and old to be glamorous in this Thanksgiving season, with discounts on beauty treatments and products that are sure to make them glow with beauty and gratitude. A ‘Gandificent’ healing acupuncture & holistic healing experience with Gandi Six years ago, I underwent multiple abdominal surgeries and I experienced a very slow recovery, as it has totally affected my digestive system/gastric tract. Until early this year, I was still suffering from recurring and sudden excruciating pains on my operation site, which would not allow me to work for a few days. Fortunately, I turned to “Gandi” for Acupuncture, and I must say that I am truly blessed that I decided to do so. Not only am I utterly amazed by “Gandi’s Acupuncture and Holistic Wellness Program” that she has outlined for me, but I have noticed an overall progress in my appearance, health, mood and energy levels. To my miraculous amazement, my metabolism has definitely improved and I did not have any pain attack during my most recent travel overseas. Compared to last year’s trip, I had constant and severe pain during the whole flight from the U.S. to Asia. Since I started Gandi’s Acupuncture back in April of this year, I have been a believer and an advocate of the astounding work that she has done, thus far. After only a few months of undergoing Gandi’s treatments, I finally have peace of mind, as I experience profound relaxation, healing and more importantly, a genuine sense of well-being. During my last surgery, I underwent such a traumatic experience, and thus, my body has severely suffered. I lost all my strength and nutrients, and I have been restricted to eating some dishes that I desire to eat or to doing certain activities that I used to do and enjoy. Consequently, as a result of the multiple surgeries, my body, muscles, my entire metabolism and immune system became extremely weak, which caused all my current symptoms. Recently, I benefited from Gandi’s Acupuncture For Sinusitis, and to my surprise, my nasal passages not only immediately started to clear up during and after Gandi’s first treatment, which included detoxification, but I also realized why I had these symptoms and how toxins, metal and dyes, as well as the environment, daily stress, emotions, grief, etc., affect our bodies. I have also tried Gandi’s Acupuncture For Sciatic Nerve Problem due to a back injury during a recent move, and it was cured after having undergone only one session! Currently, I am on Gandi’s Holistic Wellness Maintenance Program to pursue enhancing my metabolism and my vitality, which includes Gandi’s Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (“CTS”) Acupuncture treatment. After only a few sessions, my right wrist has incredibly improved. Being right-handed, it is imperative to me that I regain total strength on my right wrist/ hand. In addition, my treatment program also helps me lose weight, not excessively, without me even considering being on Gandi’s Weight Loss Program that she offers! Gandi also offers Acupuncture For Migraine Treatment. Another friend’s frequent and severe migraine attacks immediately diminished after a couple of healing sessions by Gandi. I appreciate the unique healing methods that are being provided in a caring way by Gandi and her friendly, courteous and professional staff. Moreover, I value the fact that the whole person is taken into consideration i.e., the physical, emotional as well as, the spiritual level. I regard Gandi’s Acupuncture & Holistic Wellness Center as my own “hidden sanctuary” after a hectic week or two. When I undergo the treatment program that Gandi has designed for me, I surrender to either a soothing Yoga melody or a distinct classical background music, enjoy that, and most of all, I absorb nothing but Gandi’s innate natural healing powers. Finally, I think of nothing but getting “my” special “Triple-P” & Non-Invasive Treatment ~ (Peaceful, Painless & Professional NonInvasive Treatment). Undoubtedly, Gandi has empowered herself with her breadth of knowledge, being a Licensed Acupuncturist, Master of Oriental Medicine/Health Care Practitioner in the State of California, as well as a Licensed Expert Esthetician. Many people of
numerous professions, such as physicians, attorneys, business consultants, celebrities, other media personalities, friends and relatives, also benefit from “Gandi’s Unique & Effective Skin Care Program.” Gandi’s overall work and her entire holistic wellness program is truly, what I now call, “GANDIFICENT,” I might add! Her educational approach to her clients or patients, as she explains the individual procedures or causes of illnesses or treatment benefits prior to a procedure, is highly interesting, and her hands-on care helped other friends and me to be more vibrant, healthy and more conscious of our lifestyle and eating habits. So, if you want to rejuvenated, recharged, rebalance, or if you simply want to pamper yourself and attend to your wellbeing, hurry and avail of Gandi’s natural healing powers and guidance! I have already tried several healing treatments throughout my recuperation period for the past six years, under the care of other certified healing practitioners in Europe, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and the United States, yet I can attest “Gandi’s Acupuncture & Holistic Wellness Program” has been, by far, the most effective & beneficial treatment for me. It truly works! I highly recommend Gandi’s remarkable Acupuncture, Rejuvenation, Relaxation and Rebalancing Treatments, as I strongly believe that Gandi has an utmost extraordinary ability to heal people in a natural way. Please share this, if you care about someone who you think might want to try a holistic and natural healing approach! I have just shared this “my healing path” with you, because I care too… Sincerely, Chary Dumont Multilingual Translator/Paralegal U.S. Immigration Law Firm Woodland Hills, CA

UNITEDLAB-USA to celebrate 30th milestone By Rudy M.Viernes
It’s a yearly tradition for any organization to celebrate a milestone. This is true with Unitedlab-USA (Southern California) a union of like-minded former employees of United Laboratories in the Philippines which will celebrate its 30th anniversary on October 26 at the Holiday Inn at Diamond Bar, north of Los Angeles . Unitedlab-USA was formed in 1983 by a handful of like-minded pioneers who emigrated to Southern California as early as the 70s to pursue a new life or a career. Some were early retirees or have worked for the company a number of meaningful years. United Laboratories started as a small corner drugstore in Binondo, Manilla founded by Messrs. Jose Y. Campos and Mariano K. Tan. It had steadily grown to become the largest pharmaceutical company in the Philippines today cornering a significant market share of the drug business in the country with manufacturing plants and offices in the Asia-Pacific
region. The evening affair will include the induction of new officers, a dinner-dance and raffle of prizes. Felix Belen, who was the founding president, will again lead the 2013-2015 officers replacing Richard Eclarin, the outgoing president. When Unitedlab-USA was founded in 1983 there was nary a thought it would go this far. Any organization has growth pain. We have heard of many Filipino organizations in the US and elsewhere which have disintegrated no sooner than they have organized due to the drawback of the Filipino persona: crab mentality, pride, ego, self-centeredness. But Unilab-USA is of a sterner genre. Members can easily relate to each other not only as kababayans but as ka-kabayanihan, having a common work background, shared values, experiences, even anecdotes in the work place that form a mosaic which they can all relate with. As the organization started there was immediate bonding and genuine interac-
tion among the members and their families through dosages of activities, mostly socials, sports events, and field trips. These gatherings are like reunions of one big United Family. Unitedlab-USA main socio-civic project is the extension of its civic amelioration with cash gifts to retirees of United Laboratories, especially the less fortunate ones in keeping with the spirit of bayanihan instilled in them during their years in Unilab. Bayanihan is a Filipino tradition of magtulungan as depicted in the large mural at the lobby of the administration building in Mandaluyong City. Every year, especially during the Christmas holidays, an officer or member of the organization goes home bearing the cash gift to be turned over to the United Bayanihan Foundation which recommends the recipients. UnitedlabUSA has maintained this gift giving since 1995 benefitting 15 Unilab retirees. Unitedlab-USA Mission Statement says: “We, former employees of United
Britain seeks out illegal immigrants by text message LONDON, October 18, 2013 (AFP) – Britain has sent text messages to almost 40,000 illegal immigrants warning them they have no right to remain, officials said Friday – and admitted that a handful of legal residents were caught up in the campaign. “Message from the Home Office. Our records show that you may not have leave to remain in the UK. Please contact us to discuss your case,” the message said.
A spokesman said the texts had been sent to 39,100 people between September 2012 and June 2013. Similar messages were also sent out via email and by post as part of a “proactive” effort to contact individuals who had no right to be in Britain, he said. “We believe it is right to enforce the immigration rules,” he said. But a few of the text messages were sent to the wrong recipients, including to antiracism campaigner Suresh Grover, who
told The Independent newspaper he was “absolutely shocked and quite horrified”. “I came here with my parents in 1966, I was born in East Africa and have always had a British passport,” he said. Immigration advisor Bobby Chan said he had also received a text despite having lived in Britain since 1973. “These kind of practices stereotype immigrants as a criminal community and create an atmosphere of fear,” he told the paper.
Laboratories, Philippines , together with our families, bond together to continue the ‘Bayanihan Spirit’ – the unique Filipino tradition of helping each other embodied in the United Creed. Aside from Felix Belen, the new officers to be inducted are: Rey Guieb, 1st vice-president; Naty Guieb, recording secretary; Lynda Magpali, communicating secretary; Nellie Rafael and Carol Bautista, treasurers; Vir Martinez and Megan Aquino, auditors; business managers Jun Brillantes, Sonia de Guia, Luz Martinez, Del Mendiola and Toto Umali; PROs Patty Rafael, Horacio de la Cruz, Cesar Ordonez, Tony Sarte and Bob Viloria.; Romy Torres and Gary Sinco, marshalls. Board of advisers: Jun de Guia, Gus Pastoral, Conrad Sarceno, Manny Mendoza and Butch Bautista. Board of Directors: Conrad David, Chito Obispo, Jun Manlapaz, Val Valenzuela, Ernie Rulloda, Fred Magpali, Aris Reyes and Ric Eclarin. Inducting officer is Dr. Augusto Pastoral, former Unilab dentist. Chairman emeritus is Sal de Guzman.
The Home Office spokesman said the private contractor responsible for the text campaign had acknowledged 14 texts were sent in error, “a tiny, miniscule number”. The opposition Labour party condemned the campaign as a “gimmick” that risked offending and alienating its own citizens. It recalled a similar Home Office campaign in July in which posters were displayed in London asking: “In the UK illegally? Go home or face arrest.”

Nissan named one of best global brands for 2013 YOKOHAMA, Japan – Nissan has been named one of the world’s most valuable brands for 2013, according to Interbrand, the world-leading brand consultancy. In theBest Global Brands Study, released today by Interbrand, Nissan ranked 65, up from 73 in 2012. The leading brand consultant noted Nissan’s leadership in zero emissions mobility, as well as the roll-out of NISMO badged performance cars around the world, and said the brand resonates with a broad range of global consumers. The value of the Nissan brand was estimated at $6.203 billion, an increase from last year’s value of nearly $5 billion. The ranking follows Nissan being named in June as one of the world’s greenest brands for 2013 in Interbrand’s Best Global Green Brands report. The Nissan LEAF is by far the world’s best-selling 100% electric vehicle making the company the global leader in Zero Emissions mobility. Nissan ranked fifth overall out of 50 brands in that report. “The power of our brand is a core pillar of our Nissan Power 88 strategic plan, which means that it’s essential to our growth plan,” said Roel de Vries, Nissan Corporate Vice President and global head of marketing, brand and communications. “These rankings demonstrate we’re on track to achieve the ambitious brand power goals we set in our mid-term plan.” The Best Global Brands study is Interbrand’s annual report on the world’s most valuable brands. The market still sees a rate hike earlier than most Fed officials do: in June, all but a few Fed policymakers said they did not expect to raise rates until sometime in 2015. So, we can still breath a little bit till fourth quarter next year, but that is not to say rates will come down, I believe 10 year Treasury will slide down below 2.5 to about 2.25 for the rest of the year and better first quarter of next year. 10 Year Treasury

In this year’s study, Interbrand noted Nissan’s global, multi-channel approach with a consistent message of innovation, which it said was the DNA of the brand. The report noted that demand is continuing to grow for the Nissan LEAF and that stronger consumer engagement will help Nissan achieve aggressive business targets, build loyalty and energize new audiences. According to Fitch, the market faces housing challenges such as negative equity, strict mortgage qualification standards, lot shortages, materials and labor costs pressuring home prices, and excess supply in certain markets due to foreclosures. In the midst of the challenges, however, Fitch pointed to factors supporting the market, such as “still-attractive” home prices and low mortgage rates. My thoughts on Real Estate is very bullish for California, I see downtown LA & Chinatown booming there are a lot of housing project all over downtown LA by LA Staples Center
, Chinatown and USC area. Big corporation with deep pockets getting in on the sleeping giant of an area “ Downtown LA”. Major Restaurant Chain and five star restaurants popping all over the Area. With the California Bullet Train bill on the table once approved I believe that will create about a quarter million of jobs up and down the coast. 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage: Fun to drive and best in class fuel economy makes mirage a small car for a big city life The all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage 5-door sub-compact not only marks the return of the company’s lovable and popular small vehicle offering but does so as the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid gasolinepowered vehicle available in America. With a starting MSRP of only $12,995, the all-new 2014 Mirage rises to the top of its competitive segment delivering exceptional fuel efficiency delivering up to a phenomenal 44 mpg with an EPA-rated fuel economy of 40 mpg combined/37 mpg city/44 mpg highway on models equipped with the continuously-variable transmission (CVT) and 37 mpg combined/34 mpg city/42 mpg highway on 5-speed manual transmission-equipped models. Along with its remarkable affordability and fuel efficiency, the new Mirage boasts an extraordinary level of features and accessories in its standard equipment package. What’s more, at a cost of only $1,200 more, the ES trim level of the all-new 2014 Mitsubishi adds numerous thoughtful and high-end features that are usually reserved for vehicles in a much higher priced segment. Don’t let its friendly face fool you there’s a great deal of substance behind the exterior styling of the all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage. Mitsubishi’s new 5-door model achieves a remarkably low coefficient of drag at a mere 0.28. This miraculously clean design was achieved by a combination of numerous key features incorporated into the vehicle’s exterior. These include a minimized grille opening, a tidy yet elegant patented teardropshaped roofline, sculpted crease lines along the corners of the bumper, underbody tray covers and a sharp-looking high-mounted rear spoiler “wing” that very effectively help to reduce drag. Additionally, the entry-level DE trim level of the Mirage includes an aerodynamically-shaped full wheel cover that helps further reduce drag and turbulence. With its precision engineered high-ten-
sile steel-fortified body/chassis providing reduced mass with excellent rigidity, Mitsubishi Motors’ newest model achieves a very low overall weight of only 1,973 lbs., giving this sturdy yet highly-maneuverable featherweight a better power-to-weight ratio than its main rival. Aesthetically appealing exterior design elements, including sharply raked headlights, forward sloping beltline and a muscularly taught rear hatchback design, give the new Mirage its thoroughly modern look. Inside is a comfortable, ergonomicallyenhanced cabin that is very spacious considering the vehicle’s exterior size and features extensive use of soft-touch high-grade surface materials along with an eye-catching centerpiece - a center console covered with a rich-looking high-gloss piano black inlay trim. Even the HVAC system has been designed to offer reduced weight, improved heater performance and heated airflow to accommodate the rear seat passengers, along with the implementation of a new pollen filter to improve interior air quality. Other thoughtful interior touches include several handy storage compartments/ trays and large cup holders, 60/40 split-fold rear seats, an included cover for the rear cargo area, and a surprisingly generous 17.2 cubic feet of rear cargo volume. Simple yet cleanly styled, the interior of the all-new Mirage is a pleasant and relaxing environment for both the driver as well as all of the vehicle’s occupants. engine builder. The engine plate serves as a symbol of AMG’s superlative production quality and underscores the peerless genes of the Mercedes-Benz high-performance brand. Even at first glance, the new CLA45 AMG leaves no doubt about its character; similarities with the CLS63 AMG are intentional. Mercedes-AMG complements the expressive design idiom with distinctive AMG elements, creating a new design standard. The CLA was developed with sporty proportions – the AMG “twin blade” radiator grille and the cross member in the AMG front fascia, both painted matte titanium gray, further reinforce its sporty appearance. GLENDALE
MONTVALE, NJ, October 14, 2013 – Mercedes-Benz AMG celebrated its world debut of the 2014 model year CLA45 AMG at the New York International Auto Show. Set to go on sale in the U.S. this November, the four-door coupe follows in the design footsteps of the successful CLS63 AMG, the trendsetter for fourdoor high-performance coupes. With 355 horsepower and torque of 332 lb.-ft., the 2014 CLA45 AMG is the world’s most powerful four-cylinder production engine. The AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive system on the CLA45 AMG sets new standards in its segment as well. Ola Källenius, outgoing CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “In the CLA45 AMG, Mercedes-AMG presents a unique and absolutely desirable automobile with the characteristic AMG genes. The high-tech package with the world’s most powerful four-cylinder production engine and performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive stands for ‘Driving Performance’ at its best.” Pure AMG: the most powerful fourcylinder production engine in the world The 2014 CLA45 AMG two-liter turbo engine is the most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder production engine with 355 hp and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. The combination of high power, strong torque and performance-oriented all-wheel drive lends the CLA45 AMG superb driving performance. The powerful coupe sprints from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. The high power of the CLA45 AMG calls for a highly effective cooling system. Similar to technology in the SLS AMG GT, an extra low-temperature cooling circuit is installed for water-to-air intercooling of the pressurized intake air. A large radiator at the very front of the cooling module is supplemented by a second radiator in the wheel well. A high-performance electric pump provides high flow through the water radiators behind the large air intakes and the intercooler. Cooling of transmission oil is integrated into the engine water cooling circuit. The radiator behind the front fascia is supported by another heat exchanger, which is fitted directly on the transmission and supplied with cooling water by an auxiliary pump. Like all AMG V8 and V12 engines, the new 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine is hand-built according to the traditional AMG philosophy of “one man, one engine” on an exclusive assembly line for the new AMG engine at the Mercedes-Benz engine production plant in Kölleda, Germany. The “one man, one engine” production process is evident in the AMG engine plate bearing the personal signature of the

Honda Insight Hybrid combines advanced technology, excellent fuel efficiency The new Honda Insight provides a roomy interior, versatile hatchback design, fun-to-drive nature and an award-winning low cost of ownership. The new Insight is offered in three models. The value-oriented base model is simply designated as Insight, and is well equipped with a 160-watt audio system, automatic climate control, power windows, and more Powertrain A Honda Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system powers the Insight. Comprised of a 1.3-liter i VTEC® gasoline 4-cylinder engine and a 10-kilowatt electric motor, the combination develops 98 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 123 lb-ft. of torque at 1000-1700 rpm. To maximize fuel efficiency, friction-reducing measures are used throughout the engine and the transmission. Body The Insight was given significant updates for the 2012 model year, including a more distinctive grille design with a blue accent bar representing the Insight’s high-tech hybrid identity. To improve aerodynamic performance, the strakes ahead of the front wheels were extended by 0.4 inches to better direct air around the front tires. The shape of the engine bay underbody cover was also fine-tuned, and air diffusers were added under the rear bumper to smooth airflow behind the vehicle. The changes combined to net a 2-percent increase in aerodynamic performance. Chassis The Insight rides on MacPherson

strut front suspension, combined with a torsion-beam rear suspension that helps maximize interior space. Electric powerassisted rack-and-pinion power steering (EPS) offers predictable and linear steering feel, while also saving fuel compared to traditional hydraulic systems that put a greater load on the engine. With its 36.1foot turning diameter, the Insight offers good maneuverability in congested urban settings. Insight and Insight LX models have 15-inch stamped-steel wheels with wheel covers and the Insight EX has 15inch alloy wheels. Interior The Insight’s roomy interior offers comfortable seating for up to five passengers. Versatility is a key Insight strong point, and the 60/40 split rear seatbacks fold down to create a large 31.5 cubic-foot cargo space and make it easy to mix passengers and cargo. Advanced instrumentation gives the Insight an upscale look, and provides the driver with key information at a glance. A large digital speed display is positioned high in the instrument cluster, close to

SPORTS NFL: Fed up Fan posts Browns quarterback job on Craigslist WASHINGTON, October 16, 2013 (AFP) – One fedup Browns fan thinks it’s time for a change at quarterback in Cleveland, so he put a help-wanted advert on Craigslist seeking a replacement for Brandon Weeden. “Have you played pro football? College ball? Highschool? Pee-wee?” the posting on the classified ad website asked, going on to imply that even experience with the Madden NFL video game could qualify someone for the job. “Do you sort of kind of know some of the rules of football? If yes keep reading. If no ... well also keep reading! We will take ANYONE.” Weeden regained the starting quarterback job after Brian Hoyer, who had sparked the hard-luck Browns to their best NFL start in 12 years, tore ligaments in his right knee earlier this month. Hoyer, who had replaced Weeden at the helm, will miss the rest of the season. Weeden has thrown for 1,005 yards and four touchdowns this season. The Browns are 3-3, but haven’t managed the consistency fans of the perennial stragglers crave. They led 17-7 at halftime against Detroit on Sunday, but lost as Weeden fell apart in the second half, attempting a shovel pass that was intercepted by Lions linebacker DeAndre Levy. Detroit won the game 31-17. The Craigslist ad posted on Monday is just the latest public cry of agony from a long-suffering Browns fan. In July, the obituary of lifelong Browns supporter Scott E. Entsminger, published in the Columbus Dispatch of Columbus, Ohio, requested six Browns players as pall bearers “so the Browns can let him down one last time”.

PHL sports chief frets over Myanmar blasts ahead of games MANILA, October 18, 2013 (AFP) – A top sports official in the Philippines expressed concern Friday over recent bombings in Myanmar ahead of the Southeast Asian Games there in which more than 200 Filipino athletes will compete. The Philippines is due to take part in the December 11-22 Myanmar Games but is concerned over the safety of its athletes and officials, Philippine Sports Commission chief Richie Garcia told AFP. “We are monitoring this very closely. As long as our athletes and officials are not endangering themselves we will take part. But we have to make sure there are no problems when we get there,” he added. Three bombs exploded in eastern Myanmar overnight Wednesday, police said, leaving a municipal worker person dead, in the latest in a series of blasts that the United States has described and denounced as “acts of terror”. A series of minor bomb blasts have also struck Yangon, including one at the luxury Traders Hotel on Monday that injured an American woman. Myanmar state media said the attacks appeared to be targeted at tourist spots as the country gears up for an influx of foreign visitors. Apart from the December games, Myanmar will also chair the Association of Southeast Asian Nations next year and host its meetings. The 27th Southeast Asian Games are to be held in Yangon, the capital Naypyidaw, Mandalay and Ngwe Saung beach, according to the games website. Garcia said that while the 220 Filipino athletes will
be staying in the games village, Filipino technical officials as well as other delegation members would be staying in hotels that have yet to be assigned. The sports commission will make a final decision on Filipino participation in the Myanmar games by end-November after consultations with the Philippine government, he said. “It’s too early to make a decision now really,” he added. Garcia made the comments after the Philippines complained when the hosts scrapped a dozen events, including baseball, softball, triathlon and dance sport, where Filipino athletes fancied themselves gold-medal contenders. “We decided, as part of the (Southeast Asian Games) federation, to accept whatever the hosts decided,” Garcia said Friday, denying some news reports that the Philippines was considering a boycott.
