Bali Kite

Festival 2012 The Bali Kite Festival is an annual kite festival held in Padang Galak area, Sanur Beach, Bali. This year’s festival will start from Friday (13 July) until Sunday (15 July). Traditional giant kites (4 meters in width and almost 10 meters in length) are made and flown competitively by teams from the villages (banjar) of Denpasar, Badung regency, Gianyar and Tabanan. The event is a seasonal religious festival intended to send a message to the Hindu Gods to create abundant crops and harvests. Be-bean (fish-shaped), Janggan (bird-shaped) and Pecukan (leaf-shaped) are three traditional kites flown during this kite festival. The kites are flown by teams of 10 or more adult kitefliers. The Bebean is the largest kite, and looks like a broadmouthed, split-tailed fish. The Janggan form has a broad flowing cloth tail that can reach more than 100 meters in length. The Pecukan requires the most skill to fly, as its unstable form often tumbles towards the ground. Red, white and black are traditional colours used in the kite’s designs. Each type of traditional kite has its own competition, with heats of 10 teams vying for the best launch and lon-

gest flight. Sometimes the kites come down over the adjacent rice paddies, and the team members have to dash through the paddy to rescue the kite before it lands in the water. A competition is also held for ‘New Creation’ kites which may include detailed three dimensional figures representing the Hindu Gods or sponsorship kites. Traditional and new creation kites are constructed from bamboo and cotton cloth. In the dry season of June through August, the winds blow continually from east to west in most of Indonesia. Balinese children and adults fly kites in the vacant rice paddies during this period. v BTNewspaper/Wikipedia/*

Activities at Bali Mandira

“Live like a King” “Stayed at Bali Mandira for 9 nights in a Deluxe Cottage. Very comfortable, King size bed. Wonderful friendly staff. Right on the beach with excellent shopping very close by. I would highly recommend the Mandira and would definitely stay there again. The Buffet Breakfasts were also great, lots of variety. This resort is in walking distance to both Mozzarella Restaurants which have excellent food at a net price. Also close to Tommy’s Cafe where you can have the best Ice coffees in Bali. At the Mandira the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. ‘Candra’ who worked in the Parasol Restaurant always made us feel special every time we walked in.

We also received a free dinner for two, as they were doing renovations at the time. This wasn’t a problem because we were either out shopping or lazing by the adults only top pool overlooking beautiful Legian Beach. What more could you ask for, as this was our first time in Bali we didn’t know what to expect, but were very happy we chose such a Wonderful Resort as the Bali Mandira. See you all again this time next year.” v Kym & Col, Sunshine Coast, Queensland from tripadvisor.com/reviewed June 23, 2012

Disseminate Message on Drug Hazards through Shadow Puppet

The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) of Bali organized an extraordinary event in an effort to disseminate information about the hazards of drugs through the staging of puppet show. Not half-heartedly, the BNN teamed up with Wayang Cenk Blonk led by the puppeteer Nardayana. The event was held in the courtyard of RRI Denpasar on Jalan Hayam Wuruk started at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday (Jun 24). It was a collaboration of BNN Bali with RRI Denpasar to commemorate the International Day against Drugs falling on June 26 each year. Attendance in the happening were Chairman of the RRI Denpasar Herman Zuhdi, Deputy Chief of Bali Police I Ketut Untung Yoga along with his wife, Denpasar Metro Police Chief, Wayan Sunartha, Head of BNN Bali, I Gusti Ketut Budiarta and other invitees. The free traditional show of Cenk Blonk Shadow Puppet took the theme ‘Loving Life by Not Using Drugs Leading to Drug-free Indonesia in 2015, Together We Realize.’ In essence, it was an effort

inviting the community to prevent, eradicate as well as struggle against the drug abuse and trafficking through traditional art performance. Such an event was also graced by Balinese pop artists like Langlang Buana and Ayu Citra Dewi who presented several songs to entertain thousands of spectators thronging the courtyard of the RRI Denpasar. According to the Head of BNN Bali, I Gusti Ketut Budiarta, his party chose to use the medium of Cenk Blonk Shadow Puppet to inform the importance of drug hazards to the community because people had known well about the Cenk Blonk puppets and the language used by the puppeteer Nardayana was easily understood and accepted by the community. As a result, the people had no difficulty to grasp the message on the drug hazards delivered and the community could also be entertained by the staging of Cenk Blonk Shadow Puppet. v BTNewspaper/ Ariek PW

End Water Injustice in Goa Tourism

Groups are Demanding Urgent Action

Tourism Concern and community groups in Goa are calling for an end to water injustice resulting from poorly regulated tourism in the southern Indian state. Tourism Concern, the Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP) and Eco Footprints are demanding urgent action by the Goan government to address the overexploitation of Goa”s water resources by growing numbers of resorts and hotels.

Water access and quality for many communities are being undermined, while untreated sewage and dumped waste is contaminating waterways and polluting the fragile marine environment. This is jeopardising the sustainability of the tourism sector itself, upon which Goa”s economy heavily depends. “Goa is popular with UK tourists and many major tour operators and hotel groups operate there. However, most visitors don”t realise the environmental devastation and water inequity being wrought by weak regulations and bad practices by the tourism sector. We”re asking people to back our campaign for change by signing our online petition,” states Mark Watson, Executive Director of Tourism Concern. “The hotels all have lush lawns and borewells.
