One of the tourist attractions worth visiting and taken into account on the Bali Island is the Alas Kedaton located at Kukuh Village, Marga Subdistrict, Tabanan. Aside from inhabited by thousands of monkeys, this destination also becomes a homey habitat to hundreds of fruit bats. During school holidays, Alas Kedaton is thronged by thousands of domestic and foreign tourists. When met amidst his busy time, the Operational Manager of Alas Kedaton Tourist Attraction, I Gusti Bagus Suryawan, said the tourist visits during school holidays this year was quite abundant. They were school students, both elementary and college from outside Bali who were spending their holidays on the Bali Island. “Not to forget, many domestic (local) tourists and foreign tourists enjoy the charm of this destination,” he said. He added there was an increase in the visits from month to month. Throughout last

wan

June, the tourist visits to Alas Kedaton amounted to 12,368 people. This number increased from last May reaching 10,354 people. Many additional facilities were made to the area of Alas Kedaton. For instance, the rel a xing benches had been restored and repainted. However, the most noti ceable was the addition and construction of two ponds within the area of Alas Kedaton. They were still under construction. Both ponds would enable the mo n keys to play and swim. It was inspired by the behavior of local m onkeys that previously only utilized the w a ter flows in the river nearby for water play. “With the construction of both pon d s, the monkeys will be able to show off an amazing attraction in the pond. Such attraction will draw the attention of tourists who are making a visit,” he said.

“In years to come, there will be many more additions to the area of Alas Kedaton. Slowly and gradually, we will make some changes so that more and more tourists will pay a visit to enjoy the natural charm of the thousands of monkeys here,” added Gusti Bagus Sur yawan. v BTNewspaper/Ary

Operational Management of Tanah Lot considers that security is one of the elements in the Seven Charms (Sapta Pesona) that must be persistently maintained and carried out to create the comfort for tourists making a visit to a destination. On that account, the management of Tanah Lot Tourist Attraction organized security training for the Security Division of Tanah Lot on July 5-7. The training was opened by Chief of Beraban Customary Village, I Wayan Arwata, witnessed by the Operations Manager of Tanah Lot, I Ketut Adnyana Toya. The training was expected to result in human resources that in turn could increase the security services for tourists making a visit and

form brisk and disciplined officers. Besides, it was also intended to encourage a high awareness and ethics in performing their duties. In addition, the training was also expected to enrich the insight of security officers. Such three-day training was followed by 24 security officers. Subject matters taught in the training included the development of discipline insights, ethics, self-defense, marching and tourism knowledge. They were trained by Tabanan Police Department, including the tourism police in charge of the tourist area.

At the end of the training, right at the closing ceremony, all participants expressed their satisfaction with the activity. Even, they hoped the training could be organized each year with different subject matters. v BTNewspaper/arik

Founded in 1983, Surrey-based Kumuka which sold adventure holidays, was well-known in the Australia market where it recently offered holidays as prizes to housemates in the latest Big Brother TV contest. Dragoman, Imaginative Traveller and Intrepid Travel are among rival adventure travel companies offering support for Kumuka customers. Intrepid Travel is offering customers booked

to travel before September 18 a 20% discount on equivalent tours; those due to travel from September 19 to December 31 are being offered 15% off Intrepid holidays, all subject to availability. Intrepid is also offering a hotline for agents and customers to re-book holidays. Dragoman is offering to pick up any stranded Kumuka passengers with on-the-road discounts of up to 25%. Both Dragoman and sister brand Imaginative Travelller have pledged to sell Kumuka customers alternative trips at the same price. Intrepid managing director Geoff Manchester said: “It is sad to see the closure of a company that we have long respected as a collaborator in building the adventure travel sector. We understand that this is a distressing time for Kumuka staff and our thoughts are with them. v BTNewspaper/Linsey McNeill/TravelMole

Exploring Several

Countries by

Balinese Dances For the matter of dancing, I Gusti Agung Ayu Oka Partini is the expert. She has been very familiar with dancing since her childhood. She has a wealth of experience in this field. The woman born at Abian Tuwung, Tabanan in 1949 is indeed old enough, but her spirit remains extremely fit. When Partini was met at her beautiful home on Tuesday (Jul 3) on Jalan Gandaria, Denpasar, at a glance her face impressed a Japanese nuance. As the note of the writer, she indeed often travelled to Sakura Country, Japan. The purpose was no other than showing off her skill in the Balinese arts, especially dancing. It was said she came to Japan together with her husband, I Wayan Sugarta, who is also an artist. The woman with some grandchildren still looks energetic let alone when she trains Balinese dance. In her neighborhood, she is familiarly called Mrs. Sugarta by her friends. To cultivate her talent, she attended school in the Gamelan Music and Dance Conservatory (Kokar) of Denpasar and then she continued her study to the Indonesian Dance Academy (ASTI) of Bali. Now, Mrs. Partini is a lecturer at the Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI) Denpasar.

Ideas Her role in the ISI along with the experience of visiting several countries makes Partini well known among the people interested in Balinese dance. There are several foreigners who come to her house on Jalan Gandaria, Denpasar to learn to dance. So many students have learned Balinese dance to Partini, then an idea came to her namely to reunite all the students into a performance. Her desire finally came true. The organizing committee of Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2012 welcomed her idea to participate in jazzing up the annual cultural extravaganza. It can be imagined how hard to bring in foreign tourists to Bali whose number reached a dozen of people. However, when love and dedication came together, the difficulty could finally be resolved. Perhaps, it was a manifestation of love and dedication of Mrs. Partini to the arts and Bali. The affection of her students consisting of foreigners to Balinese traditional dance seemed to have built a synergy in overcoming the difficulty. Seven dances The art performance by foreigners initiated by Mrs. Partini then became one

of the agendas of the Bali Arts Festival this year. There were seven independent dances specially performed by those foreign dancers. Such amazing dances were presented in the Ksiraarnawa Hall, Denpasar Art Center at night on June 30. At that time, all seats were fully occupied. There were also special ‘spectators’ then, namely the former rectors of the ISI Denpasar respectively Prof. Made Bandem and Prof. Wayan Dibia. They came to see the show lasting approximately three hours. “I Wayan Sinti was also watching the presentation,” said Mrs. Partini happily and proudly when her performance was witnessed by important figures in the arts. The performance was opened with the presentation of Gabor Dance. Subsequently, it was then followed with the Wiranata, Bayanginte, Panji Semirang, Teruna Jaya, Legong Kraton Lasem and Oleg Tamulilingan. No exaggeration to say if the art presentation at that night received a rousing applause from the audience. Gamelan player who accompanied the traditional dance was the Iswaram (an acronym for the Association of Karangasem Artists) Gamelan Troupe. According to Wayan Sugarta, Iswaram was established a year ago. Although it was still young, at that night Iswaram could show off a quite nice and compact performance. Despite the dancers were not Balinese, the face, body and movement looked very similar to that of Balinese dancers. On the other hand, Partini did not deny if a small error occurred in the dance performance at that night. She said the

arrival of her former students in Bali was just few days before the BAF was officially opened by the President of the RI, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. “As a result, they have not enough time to take an exercise,” she said while adding if some of them fell ill on the arrival in Bali. Probably, it happened because they got jetlag. Method Teaching foreigners to dance was not easy. It highly depended on the capability of the participants to catch the lesson. In this connection, Wayan Sugarta added that his wife already had a method to transmit her expertise in dancing to foreigners. “Until now, there have been some 340 foreigners who have studied Balinese dance with her. They came from several countries such as Japan, Czechoslovakia, Mexico, the United States, Thailand, France and other countries,” he said. Partini, the mother of three sons and daughters said that her team was very enthusiastic when invited to grace the BAF. They flew from far distance to Bali with their own expenses to grace the performance in the annual cultural extravaganza. Showing off their dance in Bali would surely give a special and memorable experience on the Island of the Gods when they returned home. Through the times, the Bali Arts Festival is getting more and more developed. It was initiated by the late Prof. Ida Bagus Mantra. It first appeared in 1978 when Mr. Mantra served as the Governor of Bali. v BTNewspaper/I Made Surita
