VCE ART & DESIGN It is with great pleasure that we present to you the 2023 VCE Art & Design Annual. This publication is a testament to the immense talent and creativity of our students, whose work represents the culmination of years of dedication and hard work. At Ballarat Grammar, we place great importance on the Art & Design curriculum, recognising the crucial role that creative expression plays in the intellectual, emotional, and personal development of our students. Through this curriculum, students gain the skills and knowledge necessary to explore and communicate their unique perspectives, thus developing a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. We extend our warmest congratulations to the students whose work appears in this annual. We are truly proud of your hard work, dedication, and creativity. We celebrate your achievements and look forward to following your journeys as you continue to develop your skills and passions. Sophie Andrews Grounding with Nature White stoneware clay, stoneware glazes, liquid gold 295 x 375 x 360mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics This artwork portrays elements of nature with the intention of offering comfort to the viewer. The moss-inspired texture, which often thrives on rocks and trees, harmonises with the tree-like texture adorning the sides of the structure. ‘Grounding’ represents the act of reflection and becoming one with nature. The earthy blue and green tones are employed to evoke a profound sense of peace. Grounding facilitates my discovery of peace, tranquillity and overall rejuvenation of my sense of well-being.

Sophie Andrews Stability within Nature White stoneware clay, stoneware glazes, sgraffito tool 275mm x 360mm x 360mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics The triangular shape of this artwork symbolises stability. This shape carries different meanings and messages for various individuals; it can represent the Holy Trinity in Christianity or allude to the realms of our existence, as in Alchemy. The purpose of this artwork is to instil a profound sense of stability and comfort for the viewer.

Renee Askari Scaena PB-103 clay, underglaze 105mm x 89mm x 89mm and 105mm x 89mm x 89mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics My work is inspired by Claude Monet. I drew from him the inspiration of nature. My work conveys the different scenes of spaces around us; daytime, night time, ocean and land. Using a mix of colour and sculpting, I was able to create vibrant, idyllic scenes from the world around us.

Renee Askari 1,513 Black slip, yellow slip, pink slip, clear earthenware glaze, PB-103 clay 413mm x 240mm x 81mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics Inspired by the artist Ikuko Iwamoto, I decided to explore texture and shape. Rather than just being visually appealing, I also wanted to create an artwork that is tactile to engage the end user both visually and physically. My initial research looked at braille as a way of communicating. I liked the concept of using raised dots, but as I did not want my pot to say anything in particular, I decided to cover the whole piece in dots.

Kali Evans Face in the Trees PB103 clay, stoneware glaze 65mm x 470mm x 470mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics My work is intended to reflect the combination of humans and nature. I have explored colour, contrast and dynamics and allowed the symbols of both to naturally come together when being observed by the viewer. My work evolved to have more a realistic outcome, however also allowed the viewer to decide their own outcome when looking at the piece. I wanted to capture the contrast between the human and nature mesh by using colours such as red, dark green and bright blue to stand out to the human eye.

Kali Evans Hazy Landscape Stain, majolica glaze, PB103 clay, painting medium 65mm x 470mm x 470mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics My work is intended to reflect the beauty of the colours of the natural Australian landscape. I have explored techniques such as marbling, colour, haze and contrast in this piece whilst also allowing the tones and colours to evolve naturally when being overlapped with one another, focusing on the brighter tones such as orange and blue to fuse with the darker blacks and browns to reflect a real-life blend that colours in nature create.

Ruby Martin Evil Eye Terracotta, glaze, lustre, slip 400mm x 220mm x 130mm Art Making and Exhibiting / Ceramics Evil Eye expands on my investigation into Greek folklore and the presence and symbology of it in day-to-day lives, through focusing on the lens of the infamous Greek curse of the ‘evil eye’. The movement within the ceramic swirls and the handles embodies the power that jealousy can hold over a person or within oneself. Evil Eye strives to stop viewers in their tracks and reflect upon the moments in which their own, or another person’s envy, has prevented them from living their everyday routine.

Ruby Martin Mother of Pearl BRT clay, glaze, slip, lustre 350mm x 320mm x 180mm Art Making and Exhibiting / Ceramics Mother of Pearl focuses on my exploration of Greek mythology and the different ways folklores can exist. Informed by the Greek goddess of Athena, Goddess of pottery and crafting, I expanded on my study of the presence and abundance of Greek mythology in everyday life. I was able to portray this through my creation of a vessel that looks as if it could be found either today, or 2,500 years ago in the era that ancient Greece was said to have existed.

Charlotte Miles Litore Special K clay, seashells 370mm x 570mm x 90mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics My work is based on mooring poles that are commonly found in harbours around Victoria. It’s the attachment of shells and mussels to these poles creating a sense of beauty and life beneath the water. By replicating this in my work with a series of pots. Inspired by Tess Morley who worked with shells. The shells I have collected from different beaches around Australia, help connect the viewer with nature and bring personal connection to my work.

Charlotte Miles Orbis Terrarum Special K clay, seashells, stoneware glaze 460mm x 460mm x 460mm and 440mm x 150mm x 150mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics My work reflects our connection to our home, earth. I have explored the colours and patterns as seen from space in an abstracted manner. I’ve incorporated shells as a metaphor to outline the simplicity and delicacy of life on earth. The two presented pieces look at the changing world between land and sea. Influenced by Fred Williams to examine the forms land and ocean intertwining together from multiple perspectives.

Lize Nagle Of Bloom and Decay Stoneware clay, coloured slip, glaze, gold lustre 430mm x 380mm x 200mm Art Making and Exhibiting / Ceramics Named after Francis Duggan’s poem, The Last Rose of Autumn Has Gone to Decay, this ceramic sculpture, crafted from stoneware clay, coloured slip, glazes, and gold lustre, delves into the interconnectedness of concepts like bloom and decay, life and death, love and loss. It challenges both the literal and metaphorical definitions of these notions, suggesting they are inseparable, intertwined as one. This thought provoking sculpture encourages the viewer to reflect on the impermanence of life and consider what’s truly important.

Wil Oldaker Forgive Me Stoneware clay, oxides, photographic transfer (silk screen) and glaze 390mm x 330mm x 150mm Art Making and Exhibiting / Ceramics Forgive Me is a slab-built vase that serves as a powerful and emotive commentary on the complex journey of queer individuals in today’s society. This piece is a vivid portrayal of the contrasting emotions and experiences faced by the LGBTQIA + community. This vase features four distinct sides, each representing a different facet of the queer experience. Two sides symbolise the aspirations and joys of queer individuals. The other two sides delve into the darker aspects of this journey, confronting the harsh realities of discrimination. Forgive Me invites viewers to delve into the emotional complexity of the queer experience.

Wil Oldaker The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far from the Tree Stoneware clay, underglaze, underglaze pencil, red iron oxide, glaze 370mm x 240mm x 240mm Art Making and Exhibiting / Ceramics The work challenges traditional notions of love and confronts religious expectations in a thought-provoking and visually striking manner. This pot features two central figures, “Adam and Steve,” as a playful twist on the well-known biblical tale of Adam and Eve. This representation serves as a powerful commentary on love, acceptance, and the exploration of one’s desires. On the reverse side of the work, text is inscribed, incorporating selected Bible verses that have historically been used to perpetuate homophobic ideals. The work encourages viewers to question and challenge preconceived notions of love.

Wil Oldaker Restrained - The Adam and Steve Story Stoneware clay, underglazes, red iron oxide, glaze 520mm x 180mm x 330mm Art Making and Exhibiting / Ceramics The artwork draws inspiration from the biblical story of ‘Adam and Eve’. In a contemporary reinterpretation, this work displays Adam and Steve, symbolising queer love and connection, entangled in a complex dance with an insidious serpent. The red apple sits on the top as forbidden fruit or a symbol for forbidden love. Meticulously detailed, this hand-built pot delves into themes of love, identity, and societal norms through the art of underglaze.

Tilda Pollard Triffid PB103 clay, earthenware glazes 300mm x 200mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics In my work Triffid, inspired by Hilma af Klint, I’ve borrowed and evolved her ideas into my own interpretation of a 3D form. The lines, shapes, structure and colours are greatly influenced by Hilma’s idea that love rises; however, I used my own idea of imperfection to shape the pot and the placement of lines to reflect how I feel about relationships and interpersonal connections. The petals are symbolic of the spirit of relationships rising and evolving around the concept of love.

Elly Polkinghorne Ted PB103 clay, lustre 300mm x 220mm x150mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics Inspired by Jeff Koons’, Balloon Dog, my work also focuses on the idea of childhood. Childhood is an important time during everyone’s life as it allows one to grow, develop and have an imagination and that is what I was hoping to portray in my work. My work was created using stoneware clay that was hand sculpted and finished in a clear glaze. I fired my work a third time with a green lustre. I chose to use lustre to reflect the viewers gaze within the work; hopefully to help them remember and reflect on their own childhood memories.

Elly Polkinghorne Concentric 1 PB103 clay, stoneware glaze 280mm x 85mm, 220mm x 220mm and 210mm x 120mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics I was attracted to the simplicity and subtle elegance of the work of David and Simon Leach and wanted to capture these elements in my work. I constructed my work using rolled slabs of clay, and incorporated repeated carved fluting lines, like those used by the Leach potters. I chose the fluting to reference the work of David and Simon Leach; however, the colours and forms are more modern and experimental. Unlike the Leach potters, I chose to work in bright and reflective glazes to reflect a younger and more energetic aesthetic. The tactile nature of my work also reflects the influence of David and Simon Leach.

Amy Schreenan Simbi Terracotta clay, stoneware glaze Art Creative Practice / Ceramics Inspired by Greg Daly's more colourful pieces, Simbi is a reflection on nature and the damage that is being done to our natural resources. The circular imprints reflect the sea floor of our oceans as they are considered an integral masterpiece to our world but are constantly mistreated. The title Simbi is derived from the Kikongo word ‘Simba’ meaning "to hold, keep, preserve", emphasising my message of the importance of ocean protection and to preserve what is most valuable.

Amy Schreenan Nest Buff raku trachyte (BRT) clay, stoneware glaze 400mm x 110mm x 90mm, 280mm x 105mm x 95mm, 410mm x 100mm x 110mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics Inspired by Tania Whalen’s Wabi Sabi style, my Nest series is intended to reflect the beauty in the natural world. How it is so perfectly imperfect. The carving of each hole has created a sense of spontaneity and movement in my vessels. As a lover of nature in all forms, I combined the concepts of growth and the natural world into my vessels, taking physical inspiration from my research and interest in the formation of termite nests over time.

Paige Torrance Terra Australis PB103 clay and stoneware glaze 210mm x 170mm, 220mm x 190mm, 350mm x 280mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics Inspired by the artists Pippin Drysdale and Fred Williams, my work is intended to reflect the beauty of both land, mountains and the sea. I have explored colour and shape and allowed the unexpected tones and colours to evolve naturally where the glazes overlap. My work evolved to be more impressionistic, thus allowing the viewer to discover the intricacy of the landscape themselves.

Paige Torrance Oceania PB103 clay, stoneware glaze and gold lustre 170mm x 150 mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics Inspired by the Australian landscapes of Pippin Drysdale I have sought to capture the unique colours tones and textures that these artists explored through their work. My forms are simply a canvas for my expression and my glazes inspired by the imperfections and patterns common in the Australian landscape, both natural and man-made. I drew the colours from Australia’s cultural obsession of the beach, the gold is my representation of growing by in Ballarat best known for its gold.

Emily Whitwell Rutile Blue Torso PB103 clay, rutile blue stoneware glaze, floral cutouts, slip, structural moulds 280mm x 200mm x 120mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics My body of work for Unit 3 is a realistic yet metaphorical interpretation of the female body and what being inside of the female body incapsulates in today’s society. With the use of sociohistorical contexts of the 1990s third wave feminist movement, I wanted to encapsulate the ideas surrounding the physical beauty of the female body while also drawing in the foreshadowing truth behind the beauty industry and the impacts it has on women, and society as a whole.

Emily Whitwell Abstract Teapot PB103 clay, cosmic oil spot, cardboard cut-outs 220mm x 170mm x 60mm Art Creative Practice / Ceramics My intention behind this body of work for Unit 4 was to simply create an abstract, cubist but nonfunctional interpretation of an everyday object, the teapot. The teapot is another form of the ‘body’, while containing a belly, arm, head, so I wanted to put my own modern twist onto it. I used a lot of inspiration from retro and modern artworks that have shaped everyday objects into an abstract piece of artwork.

Poppy Coull In Season Gouache on paper 420mm x 295mm Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing This painting was inspired by Audrey Flack’s vibrant feminine perspective on the Vanitas genre, which focuses on the transience of life and vanity of earthly pleasures. The pear is a common analogy for the female physique, which takes the centre of the piece. With time, fruit will wither, wrinkle and rot. Women are pressured to preserve an ageless appearance.

Poppy Coull Vanity Acrylic on canvas 405mm x 405mm Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing This still life piece is a reflection on mortality and femininity. The extinguished candle contributes to the eerily empty setting of a vanity, that sits unaccompanied and lifeless except for a single temporarily blooming flower. Pearls hang over the canvas like a necklace, echoing a materialistic obsession with appearance and extending the painting into reality. This infatuation seems futile when faced with the inevitability of death.

Lucy Gibson Simplicity Acrylic and fine markers on paper 440mm x 550mm Art Making and Exhibiting / Painting and Drawing My artwork Simplicity reflects upon the simplistic life of the city and the surrounding culture that comes along with it. Those who understand and currently live in the city of Melbourne may be familiar with the public transport that is used prominently in the community, using this perspective I captured a photo upon one of the metro trains to fully encapsulate the scenery that is Melbourne. How such a simple photograph can express such detail and complete peace.

Abby Hillier Mother Nature Canvas paper, oil paint, refined linseed oil 295mm x 210mm and 420 x 295mm Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing My painting is based upon the mother/daughter connection, and how nature symbolises mothering qualities, hence the title Mother Nature. In my painting I wanted to highlight the beauty of motherhood and childhood and the interconnection that mother nature has within this relationship. I chose to paint flowers that visually look like they have been handpicked and very ‘out of place’, to represent the disconnection we experience with nature and sometimes our own mothers.

Abby Hillier The Beauty of Noticing Paper, oil paint, linseed oil 375mm x 275mm Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing My Unit 3 work was influenced by Claude Monet, he was inspired by his immediate natural surroundings and curating the accurate depiction of light. I wanted my painting to depict a form of natural simplicity and a sense of solace for the viewer. I achieved this through using the impressionist art style and exaggerating the representation of light.

Olivia Manzin It Helps Me Graphite pencils 175mm x 65mm Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing For my three joint pieces, I used a range of graphite pencils, where each piece took approximately four hours to complete. I want to provoke my audience into understanding the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and portray how self-harm can be used as a method of relief for both women and men. Men’s mental health is not as recognized as females due to the stigma surrounding males having to be strong and stoic, which forces them to bottle up their emotions due to social stereotypes.

Olivia Manzin Boxed In Graphite pencil, black pastel 297mm x 420mm Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing My artwork explores the idea of conflict within the mind, and the feeling of being trapped inside of yourself. The words surrounding the body explain the feeling of being led on and deceived, then being left with nothing. Having the body naked creates a sense of vulnerability that I wanted to provoke my audience into feeling a sense of guilt. The black and white colours create an eerie tone to my art, like loss of happiness and numbness.

Sarah McDonald-Williams Just Breathe Acrylic, yarn, ink, modroc, masking tape, photo paper on canvas 1530mm x 920mm (3 canvases) Art Making and Exhibiting / Painting and Drawing Just Breathe exists to comfort the people that language failed, those who want to scream, that want to cry from sadness or joy, and those who feel lost. It’s here telling thousands of stories simultaneously. The intended overall message of the piece is, ‘everything’s going to be ok, just breathe’, is a reminder that occasionally we need to slow down and breathe for there are more radiant, serendipitous days ahead, we just need to hold on.

Elizabeth Nieuwoudt Distant Memories Oil pastel on paper 210mm x 148mm x 7 Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing My body of work presents my childhood and current memories of growing up in South Africa and being surrounded by the beauty of its multiple and diverse landscapes. Through the range of colour and atmospheric perspective, I want to convey the emotions that I felt being connected by the land. Similarly, I want my audience to also experience the childhood appreciation and comfort when looking at my body of work.

Elizabeth Nieuwoudt Stoffels Rivier Acrylic paint on canvas 605mm x 452mm Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing This work explores how I personally experienced the atmosphere and senses of South African land. The work depicts a familiar and personal landscape while growing up and the connectiveness to the atmospheric structures of the landscape. It is my intention to convey my personal relationship to South African landscapes as well as the different atmospheric perspective of South African.

Bridie O’Halloran The Pain of a Pretty Face Acrylic on card Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing These works explore an interpretation of intense emotion. Attempting to express the oppressive nature of beauty standards inflicted on women, both portraits aim to embody this internalisation of societies need for perfection. I intended to exaggerate this through the use of bold colour.

Bridie O’Halloran Burden Oil on wood Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing This artwork is a portrait, attempting to embody the effect substance abuse has on the mental state. Exploring colour and the role that it plays in the facial expression in times of emotional crisis.

Anastasia Parker Unearthed Polymer & acrylic paint, spray paint, impasto medium and varnish on plywood Triptych 1200mm x 2400mm Art Making and Exhibiting / Painting and Drawing A dissected and moveable mural which is a medley of earth, water and sun. Unearthed does not only celebrate the physical body and its many phenomena, but the way in which we represent such a miniscule aspect within the story of the universe. Despite what we may self-indulgingly believe, we blend in, a speck of unique consciousness. This is exactly how it should be, equalised.

Anastasia Parker The Energy of Observation Mixed media on MDF board 1210mm x 2230mm Art Making and Exhibiting / Painting and Drawing We, as humans, are intricately connected to the natural world in ways which we have slowly begun to disregard. The Energy of Observation is extremely accessible, just as our ability to focus on the sway of oak limbs in the wind should be. Relearn a world of depth, detail and delight by transferring your negative energy into the discoveries of the beauty around you.

Eva Philippiadis Brazen Bark Paper bark, wooden fire stick, resin, red ochre, ash charcoal 843mm x 410mm Art Making and Exhibiting / Painting and Drawing Brazen Bark is a personal reflection on ceremonial scarification practised in a variety of Australian Indigenous groups as well as the strength of women as knowledge holders. I used paperbark and other natural materials like resin and ochre, to investigate my own Indigenous heritage and cultural practises, as I connected myself to country.

Claudia Richardson As a Posture Whispers Watercolour, acrylic, ink and graphite on Yupo paper 1660mm x 1180mm Art Making and Exhibiting / Painting and Drawing As a Posture Whispers recognises body language, its existence, and effectiveness. It explores the poetry and messages behind posture; the art of communicating without words. With a subject matter of the female figure each part of the body is recognised. The piece depicts one body literally and figuratively as the body works as one to express itself. Aside from its representation of expression it offers a candid portrayal of a realistic body to foster a sense of relatability. It subtlety leaves room for interpretation in terms of more personal messages.

Dakoda Rowland My Love Acrylic paint, spray paint, white cotton, school dress and canvas Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing Within this piece I explored the ideals of memory and the places that fill the intricate core memories that fill my life. I used quotes and the image of a heart and cards for personal memories of my own, I used the top of a school dress for the notion of my favourite important people I've met at school that has impacted my life. This piece is a collection of personal items that trigger important memories of my own.

Dakoda Rowland What if I Forget Acrylic paint, three canvases, Great Gatsby book pages, gold fabric paint Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing Within my collection What if I Forget, is a symbolic representation within the idea of Alzheimer's and the notion of forgetting the world and individuals around you, with the inspiration from the artist Ann Hamilton as well as my late great grandparents love story. Having my portrait as a familiar face but faceless emphasises the effects of loss of memory. My next piece demonstrates the intimacy that will remain after the loss of the temporary. It's a story of remembering, loss and intimacy in the small gestures.

Emma Williams Sonder Video: Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra phone and Luma Fusion editing app 3:05 Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing Sonder is defined as ‘the realisation that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own’. Through visual storytelling, I aim to reveal the beauty within the ordinary, that every person we encounter in our daily lives possesses a rich and intricate inner world, just as we do. The film serves as a poetic reminder of our interconnectedness, urging viewers to pause and appreciate the unique narratives that surround us.

Emma Williams In Full Bloom Coloured A3 paper, coloured A4 paper, wood, varnish, silicone, wire 440mm x 440mm x 50mm and 440mm x 440mm x 190mm Art Creative Practice / Painting and Drawing Inspired by the collective journey of life we all endure; these pieces aim to capture the similarity between the fleeting beauty of natures and human’s most vibrant moments throughout the journey of life. By using wood as a medium, I've juxtaposed the fragility of the blossoms with the enduring strength of the material, much like life’s elements. Through this, I invite viewers to contemplate the fleeting yet profound beauty of life's most vibrant moments.

I embarked on this journey of creating this short film and physical work about love to provide a celebration of what it means to love – in any form, for any person. Every person, at any time of their life, will have immensely varying understandings, beliefs and experiences of love. Love can be so many things.

The imperfection of the work conveys the rawness and lack of a need for a façade of perfection required in an intimate relationship.

Schooling at the same institution for up to thirteen years leads to burnout in many teenagers, the repetitive routine contributing significantly to the youth mental health crisis we see today. Depicting the routine of a young person in this work, viewers are invited to peer into the life of the protagonist through a fisheye lens – reflecting on the innate similarities and monotony of the routines of everyday people.

This work followed the realisation that I didn’t know all that much about the people I loved, and all I could do was provide physical and emotional comfort for the secrets and confessions that would stay unknown. The comforter is a soft touch and an understanding of all the things I will never understand.

I used the oil pastels on the paper and used smudging techniques to blend the colours, then after completing the oil pastels I used a screen to print on top. Based on Botticelli’s La Primavera the artwork is symbolic of the struggles women go through when objectified, with each character being symbolically embedded in the work.

Close experienced prosopagnosia, a condition that makes it challenging to identify faces and comprehend facial expressions and signals. I've integrated Close's utilisation of colour to convey the emotional essence of the facial expression. My objective was to encourage the audience to "take a step back" and observe a partially formed face.

The aim of my piece was to utilise this style and reflect the concept of seasonality, as winter and spring are depicted. these two seasons were used to symbolise decay and regrowth. Using multimedia such as mirrors, jeans and other objects enabled me to illustrate societal and personal struggles that I’ve experienced over time. The portrayal of these contemporary issues also allows for the viewer to relate on a personal perspective to the artworks.

It was inspired by the documentary The Australian Dream. Utilising dry point etching for Adam’s face, along with the photocopy transferred text, I aim to force my audience to imagine themselves at the other end of such discrimination, evoking feelings felt by Adam himself. This artwork, which I imagine as a paste-up all around the country, is a call to action for Australians in a time of great cultural change in this country’s Aboriginal landscape.

This garment is inspired by the harmful impacts of fast fashion. The garment is constructed of sustainable materials and non-toxic natural dyes made from strawberries, turmeric and paprika as well as a mix of berries.

I have explored botanical dyeing to create a garment using flowers collected from around the school garden, to connect an element of the school to the gown. The end user’s want for a simple gown was achieved through the panelling, the back detailing of the garment and the pearls. Overall, the simplicity of the gown ties together my ideas as the designer and the end user’s design brief.

As they grow their style, music and audience, the band requires a cohesive style, logo and uniform which will help to identify and solidify their performance in the music community and facilitate the growth of their passion.

The teahouse is launching at the end of 2023, it will be a Chinese teahouse with both modern and traditional styles. The end user is looking for a formal outfit for the tea house's opening night at the end of this year. She would like the outfit to have a deep connection to Chinese culture to match the tea house. The end user especially asked for Chinese frog buttons in the design product and for the outfit to be lightweight for comfortable movement on the opening night.

Charli Bevan Open Storage Tree Steel and found hardwood 120mm x 100mm x 80mm Client / End User: Alison Bevan Product Design and Technology Alison was looking for a creative piece of furniture to go in her open entryway that could store her bags, keys, photos, coats and shoes. She wanted a completely unique piece that could be the focus point of the room. It is made from steel and found hardwood which was gathered from her paddocks to incorporate her own home into the design. Her entry is mainly black and white, so she wanted a similar colour scheme with a touch of warmth which is in the timber.

Ella Bray Art Easel Red gum timber, grey gum timber and pine 1620mm x 900mm x 850mm Client / End User: Ella Bray Product Design and Technology This art easel is created to situate a canvas onto. My end user enjoys painting and wants an easel that allows her to paint while standing up. The easel, while serving a primary function, also serves to display artworks. I wanted to create a visually appealing piece that draws the eye by contrasting the forest red gum with the lighter grey gum. Its unique in its design with curved legs and a knuckle at its centre. This design has a focus on the 'Arts and Crafts' movement that my end user loves as well as 'Bauhaus' because it serves multiple purposes.

This table is built from 100+ year old timber that originated from the local Lubeck community hall, a small town close to our home. With a desire to present the true history of this timber and a look that commands attention, I have built an aesthetically pleasing table that also displays the rustic tactility of the old timber that early generations of our family have walked on.

Crafted from F17 hardwood, plywood and glass, this cabinet features a lighting system to better display the items as well as glass doors and sides, allowing me to showcase my cherished LEGO sets while keeping them dust-free. With dedicated draws for instruction books and spare parts, it's a functional masterpiece, adding both aesthetic charm and practicality to my pool room.

Most of it has all been cut and constructed from one single slab of damaged mountain-gum benchtop: including the top, base, and centre frame. The outskirts of the octagonal top were made with F17 hardwood to avoid showing end grain, and it's all been joined together with dominos, PVA glue, and hidden tech screws.

He needs to find new furniture to fill his new home but hasn’t had much luck finding pieces that match his tastes. He has always been interested in arts, fashion and has a rather 'minimalist’ taste. He has asked me to produce a unique and simple piece of furniture. Something with sufficient surface area for his bedside belongings, and that will match his preferred minimalist aesthetic.

The design and materials echo the dining room, with it matching the dining table for a flawless and seamless transition. The powder coated black steel frame highlights the Victorian Ash, making it a momentous feature.

The Box has a lid on it so that it can be closed at times if it is being used outside. The frame of the box has been made from the supports of recycled pallets for a sustainable approach and the sides, front, back and bottom have 7mm plywood fitted.

The metal frame means it will last longer and I like the aesthetics of the black metal mixed with the rich red colour of the timber.

The board is comprised of six separate pieces that come together as one larger board. It was created because my mum as the end user likes to use her current small chopping board as an easy plate at times. I wanted her to have a variety to choose from as well as having the ability to use it as an extra-large chopping board for large meals. The goal was also to make a visually appealing piece made from different coloured woods to create contrast.

Oscar Booth Automatic Sheep Handler 20mm steel tubing, pneumatic actuator, pneumatic valves, air compressor 320mm x 640mm x 200mm Systems Engineering I have made a scaled proof of concept for an automated sheep handler made to flip sheep into a position where they can be handled for processes such as crutching or lamb marking. It is intended to help make life easier for farmers with sheep by reducing the manual handling involved which causes serious injuries including strain injuries to their back.

This system is capable of sizing four different potato sizes from 35mm, 55mm, 75mm and over size. It operates through a speed controller powered by a battery that drives a motor which spins the 1st of 10 rollers connected by staggered O-rings.

Danny Conboy Automatic Sprayer Steel, PVC 600mm x 900mm x 600mm Systems Engineering The system is a 1:3 scaled model. It uses a magnet and hall effect sensor operating as a speed sensor connected to an Arduino. The Arduino then via a relay operates a pump to ensure that the pump only operates when travelling at a predetermined ideal speed of 7km/h. This prevents over-spraying crops and reduces wastage and environmental impacts of spraying.

It reads light levels and shuts the door when it gets dark, after the chickens roost.

Ollie Gaston Active Aero - Rear Wing Fiberglass, carbon fibre, steel, Arduino, Servo motors 300mm x 1700mm x 450mm Systems Engineering This project is a rear spoiler for race cars. It moves an aerofoil up and down, which slows the vehicle down faster during braking, allows for time savings during cornering, and gives the vehicle the capacity to accelerate faster and reach a higher top speed. It gathers data through a number of sensors, before an onboard computer processes this information and directs servo motors to move the aerofoil.

Whether it is lowered or raised the shade will automatically stop using limit switches at both the top and bottom of the rails.

The aim of the heater is to give disadvantaged people who experience homelessness the ability to heat a small area, such as a tent, without any running costs.

An Arduino microcontroller reads a value from the potentiometer and generates a PWM signal that is sent to the motor driver. This driver controls two motors that have wheels attached, launching the ball out of the pipe. The process of designing, planning and manufacturing this system has been enjoyable and taught me a lot about engineering and design.

It would be placed in a river where the water current would push the blades. This creates a rotational movement that spins the motor to produce an output of power into a battery for later use for any chosen application.

Claudia Richardson Time Triggered Poly-Wire Lifter Arduino uno, geared motor, real time controller 300mm x 200mm x 200mm Systems Engineering Due to the time-consuming jobs to be done within cell grazing, I have created a system to remove this issue. The system lifts an electric wire up to allow cattle or other stock to move from one cell into another in a rotational grazing setup. The Real Time Controller (RTC) allows for the time at which this occurs to be selected and hence personalized to work for a particular user thus making cell grazing a more efficient practice.

It is a remote-control landmine detector that utilises an Arduino-based transmission and receiver system for long-distance control. It features a specialised copper wire coil located beneath the body for precise landmine detection and connects to a noticeable onboard warning light and siren to alert users effectively.

Amelia Rizzo Motor Powered Shelving Unit Aluminium, Timber, Chip board 1200mm x 1200mm x 300mm Systems Engineering This shelving unit makes use of a motor to move shelves in a circular pattern. Its purpose is to provide accessible storage options to those with moveability issues like those in wheelchairs more specifically, and to reduce manual handling injuries by allowing lifting to occur at safe heights. It is button powered and allows the user to shift the shelves to accessible heights for the individual.

Jonah Scott Automatic Cattle Crush

Steel, solenoid valve, pneumatic piston, Arduino 1400mm x 800mm x 100mm Systems Engineering By automating the process of cattle handling, the problem of labour shortages in farming can be mitigated. When a cow enters the crush area it will be detected by a digital proximity sensor. A digital signal is sent to the Arduino board which activates the solenoid valve which switches its position to supply air to the piston, closing the crush doors onto the cow. The cow is then secured in the cattle crush until the operator flips the switch release and the system is reset.

Tom Smart Rubbish Collecting Robot Steel, aluminium, wires, motors, linear actuators, speed controllers 320mm x 810mm x 370mm Systems Engineering I have made a Rubbish Collecting Robot which is programmed to travel along the ground until it detects rubbish through a video sensor. Once rubbish is detected, two arms move towards each other. Once these arms clamp the rubbish on the ground it will then be lifted by motors above it and into the bin at the back of the robot. This is repeated until the robot has collected all the rubbish in the surroundings.

Aarya Soni Stroke Recovery Trainer Arduino uno, I2C LCD screen, arcade style push LED buttons, MDF, battery 400mm x 300mm x 200mm Systems Engineering My systems project is designed to aid motor skill recovery for people with neurological injuries, stroke etc. The buttons light up in a random sequence and the user has to respond by pressing the lit button as quickly as possible. Their score and timing are recorded on the screen in order to evaluate their progress.

Ollie Spinks Ultrasonic Matrix Fall Detection System Wood, hot glue, electrical tape 400mm x 600mm x 100mm Systems Engineering This system is a prototype for an integrated unit that would be constructed around a toilet stall, which would allow it to detect when an individual has fallen on the floor unconscious and would be able to alert nearby individuals of the medical crisis within. It uses an array of Ultrasonic Sensors to detect a change in distance and cross-reference measurement readings with each other to discern where and how long an individual has been unconscious.

The user can set two clocks and, through the Real Time Controller (RTC), will dispense at 2 given times. This will be done through spinning of the wheel. The user's medicines are locked through a combination lock.

It has a two roller mill inside connected to a motor that turns the roller and crushes the wheat into a fine material which falls into a removable box under the rollers to catch the flour. The idea of the system was to be able to make bread at home and for people who require special types of bread and gives them that advantage of making their own flour.

This device utilises a neural network to allow for the detection of cards, located inside of a spring-loaded card holding chamber, so that a stepper motor can rotate the cylindrical sorting system in order for the detected card to be placed into the correct chamber.

Harper Walsh Wine Flow Meter Hall effect sensor, keypad, seven-segment display module, liquid crystal display module, switch, buzzer and Arduino mega 320mm x 300mm x 200mm Systems Engineering A general flow meter will count how many litres of water flow through a pipe or tube but this one will have a custom set function. This means that the user will be able to select how many litres of wine (as this would be used in a winery) they want and when that number is reached, the system will buzz signalling the user to turn it off. The user will input a number into the keypad and when the hash button is pressed, it will show up on the liquid crystal screen. Then when the turbine spins, litres will be counted, and the buzzer will set off when the two numbers match.

When the Servos rotate, they pull the fishing wire and contract the finger. The elastic cord returns the finger to the original position when the motor rotates in reverse as the muscle relaxes.

Archie Williamson Rehabilitative Glove Motor controller, air pumps 300mm x 300mm x 400mm Systems Engineering My project, a rehabilitative glove, is aimed to aid the recovery of stroke survivors who suffer from a loss of motor control in their hand(s). The device is designed to pump air through the tubes to create air resistance to work against as an alternative way of recovery. Within the device I have implemented a game-like system that is designed to train the hand by counting the number of presses and the duration of time held on the button within the tip of the middle finger.

Quadrupedal Robot 3D printed PLA, mini maestro, teensy 4.1, FT5320M servos, acrylic paint, GPS, Arduino, MQ-9 sensor, GoPro 275mm x 125mm x 150mm Systems Engineering This remote-controlled quadrupedal robot is designed to gather information and assess situations after natural disasters. By introducing quadrupedal robots like B.A.R.B. we allow for quicker, safer responses to earthquakes, building collapses and other disasters whilst limiting deaths. Because of its lightweight design B.A.R.B. can fit in smaller areas to search for survivors where human responders can’t, its use of a gas sensor and camera allows for real-time transmission of data to assess the area’s safety for humans.

Presentation 2: Signature glass Client: Emilia and John Davis Visual Communication and Design The speakeasy and glass were created for my client Emilia and John Davis, a family starting a restaurant and who want an underground speakeasy to rekindle the memory of John Davis’ wife. The theme is 1960’s with the client loving the colour red. There has been a stage put in for the client’s band to perform weekly with a 60’s style set. The glass has a Smokey vibe to it which is presented in the mountain.

Spray Paint, Vinyl Presentation 2: Keychain and isometric drawing Client: Hyperlite Visual Communication and Design Hyperlite had a new wakeboard coming out called Pisces and was looking for its surface graphics to be designed for women aged 16-30. Alongside this, they wanted a keychain to give to the customers who buy the wakeboard to help promote and celebrate the launch of their newest edition to the wakeboards they sell. Hyperlite required an existing wakeboard to have its surface graphics changed to the new Pisces design to see what the design will look like as well as a prototype of the keychain with an isometric drawing.

She requires a partly outdoor space for doing yoga in the retreat as a 3D model for Presentation 1. Presentation 2 requires tea bag packaging and the tag's surface graphics that will be presented upon arrival at the retreat, sold online and in various Northern Territory towns. Both designs should create a sense of tranquillity.

Client: Sonya Mandeno Visual Communication and Design Sonya Mandeno is the founder and director of Fine Age magazine, targeted towards mature women, interested in the classics of fashion, art, photography, quality fine dining, and the unique small joys of life. Recently Sonya has become fascinated with the trends of youthful women and believes the roots of youth do repeat themselves. Sonya Mandeno wanted to expand her magazine range to target a younger female market. The main interest and topics in Teen Dream had to be similar to the pre-existing FineAge magazine and provide a small gift that the target audience will get use out of and not just be an accessory. Which concluded my idea to produce a makeup range called ‘Mum’s Makeup collection’, with the first release including a variety of lipsticks.

Client: Monica Jamieson Visual Communication and Design Monica Jamieson is a successful well-known chef and social media influencer in Australia, living in Melbourne, Victoria. She has recently purchased an empty land space in Cape Schanck on the Mornington Peninsula. Monica is seeking an architect who can design a small holiday house for her to escape from the city and provide intensive cooking workshops in her kitchen. Bringing people into her new home, Monica wants to provide new cooks with a learning experience. Monica also wants to create a physical cookbook focusing on recipes that can be prepared for an exotic and sophisticated Australian themed dinner party. This cookbook will be a hard cover book that can provide users with a guide to preparing and presenting food that will attract people through its engaging presentation and communication design.

The Australian Dinner Party Guide

Pavlova ingredients 5 egg whites

1 cup caster sugar

1 tsp white vinegar

1 tsp cornflour

1 cup raspberries

1 cup strawberries

5 passionfruits

250 grams thickened cream

directions Preheat the oven to 150°C. Place the egg whites into a bowl and electric mix until soft peaks form. Slowly add the sugar into the egg white mixture and beat until a glossy texture appears. Sift the cornflour over the mixture with the vinegar and fold through until just combined. Place the whole mixture on a tray to form a round, tall pavlova. Use a spactula to manipulate the mixture to sit in the desired positon on the tray. Place in the oven, and reduce the temperature to 120°C and bake for 30-35 minutes. Turn the oven and let the pavlova to cool in the oven.

Whip the cream until soft peaks form. Cut your strawberries to the desired size. Delicately place the cream on the pavlova and avoid squashing the shell with the wirght of the cream. Decorate with fresh berries and passionfruit.

The key to a pure australian pavlova is a tall fluffy pav, decrorated with fresh berries, and drizzled passionfruit.

Francesca Khoury Ghibli Makeup Collection Presentation 1: Model Makeup Palette Presentation 2: 3 x A3 Posters Client: Angela Hunter of Vertigo Visual Communication and Design This collection was inspired by the award-winning films by Studio Ghibli, namely Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo and Spirited Away. Using colours, characters and symbols from throughout the films, the makeup palettes were constructed with the intention of being environmentally sustainable whilst maintaining fun and bright colours that fans of the films would love and purchase. These palettes are accompanied by corresponding posters used to market the products, from billboards to social media.

Timber, nylon lace, lace Client: Panasonic Visual Communication and Design Panasonic is an electronics manufacturer based in Japan, branding internationally all over the world. Due to Hong Kong's study stress levels, Panasonic decided to create a study cafe in Hong Kong to allow students to have a nice study environment to reduce the stress levels of the city. I created a design of a cafe with the dimensions of an average Hong Kong shop in a mall called Langham place, located in the centre of the city- Mong Kok. The use of Japanese aesthetics, reflecting onto Hong Kong's current trends are applied into my design, creating a soft homely environment for people to study peacefully, yet giving the environment designer looks through my presentation 2 - the solo seating cubicles for people to concentrate individually.

Gabriel Marshall Chess Set Reimagined Client: Alec Watson Visual Communication and Design This board and pieces were created for my client Alec Watson, a student of the Hamilton and Alexandra College who asked me to design a chess set to solve the problem of having only one set shared amongst 50 students in his year level. The design is called ‘Wire Roses’ and is based on a medieval theme which mixes elements of beauty with the harsh brutality of the era. While the pieces are based on the traditional, there is only one of each King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Rook, three Pawns and an ‘extra’ sinister piece called “The Doctor”. Fewer tiles on the board (7 x 6), and a “Plague Pit” in the centre, combined with the reduced number of pieces creates a faster and exciting game.

Nikaiya McMillan RaveCave Client: Abby Hillier, founder of Sunnies & Co Visual Communication and Design I was inspired to create sunglasses because they’re an attractive accessory, they have the power to elevate any outfit. To expand the range sunglasses at Sunnies & Co I decided it was a unique idea to create eyewear for those that are interested in festivals and night clubs. The design brief required me to create a completed eyewear range, logo and surface graphics presented on the packaging to be distributed to the store for display. To catch the eye of my end-users I conducted research of outfits of popular festival goers and was able to narrow down designs that fit their style the most, using moody colours and metallics.

Presentation 2 is a brochure containing the interior and exterior constructions of the housing design. Similarly, the brochure contains the Taurus Design's views and values within their company.

They will be selling the drinks in-house and promoting them on social media platforms and on local streets around Melbourne.

The packaging is a scaled down version of a chocolate box that will be presented in store and supplied to customers. The drawings are technical designs of the mould that will make the new chocolate design and will fit inside the package.

For the next season's product launch of Eleven, she wanted to move away from fashion in wearable pieces to develop a new concept in linking an avant-garde alcohol that's never have been shown in the fashion market. Yilin is seeking a full set of alcohol bottle designs that are visually stunning, and avant-garde. Alongside the bottle designs, the client is looking for a fresh and avant-garde packaging concept that complements the bottle aesthetics.

Client: Gracie Banks Visual Communication and Design Gracie Banks (client) commissioned me to design her newly renovated 1900s building into a vinyl/music shop aimed at people from 15-30 years old. The brief stated new logos and posters for the new music shop. The goal was to use colour, shape, and line to draw the eye, as well as a fully scaled 3D model of the interior and exterior of the building to pitch in a design meeting to potential stakeholders.

Aleesha Walker Fallon Family House Client: AJ Fallon Visual Communication and Design The Fallon family home is a spacious house for a family of seven located along the Hawea River, in Wanaka New Zealand. Consisting of lots of natural lighting, a luxurious and safe backyard as well as creating a space for each individual to have their own private area to learn, grow and relax. This house has two main levels and a walkout basement, with multiple bonus rooms and presents a luxurious space whilst also maintaining the family home feeling.
