Scholarships are a very important part of the history and culture of Ballarat Grammar School. At Ballarat Grammar, we understand that the best way to nurture talent is through opportunity.

Through the provision of scholarships, Ballarat Grammar values and encourages diversity. We value and learn from others, from the experiences they bring and the potential they show.

Our scholarship program provides life-changing opportunities for students across a wide range of academic and co-curricular activities. Our focus is on learning that matters. Learning to be creative, to think critically and to communicate clearly. Learning to build relationships. Learning to be compassionate and have a lived set of values. Learning to be resilient.

Through your support we aim to increase the number of scholarships available to deserving students who may otherwise be unable to enjoy the benefits of a Ballarat Grammar education.

Through Your Generous Gift

There are numbers of ways to contribute to the School’s capacity to award scholarships. Any gift, no matter the size, has the power to change lives.

Gifts can be made in a number of ways: “I would like to establish an endowed named scholarship.”

A sum of money can be provided to the Ballarat Grammar Foundation Scholarship Fund that will be held in Trust by the Ballarat Grammar Foundation and thus provide a named scholarship forever available to students at our School.

The smallest endowed named scholarship is $125,000 for tuition only, or $200,000 for boarding and tuition. Parameters are agreed upon and documented to ensure that the benefactor’s wishes are clear and that the scholarship is awarded in accordance with those wishes. The endowed sum can be of any larger amount and extra funds can be added at any time in order to enhance the capacity of the scholarship to assist students.

Members of our community in this position often consider providing a scholarship in their estate planning. Speaking openly with their family and with the assistance of their solicitor and a member of the Ballarat Grammar Development Office, arrangements are carefully drafted to ensure that the scholarship is established as desired by the benefactor.

“I have made or am considering making a Bequest, but what can I do today?”

You you might like to consider providing funds needed for a student, for example $10k or $20k per year, and then plan the endowment of the scholarship as a bequest.

“I would like to assist but I have limited resources. What are my options?”

You can provide a gift towards scholarships of any size, confidently knowing that the funds will be added to other gifts and combined to establish an effective scholarship to support a student who may not otherwise be able to attend the School.

THE JOHANSON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP “I would not have gone to Ballarat Grammar had I not won a scholarship when I did. I grew up in Bendigo, and my chance to attend Ballarat Grammar opened up possibilities and opportunities that I could not have imagined without it. I went on to study at The University of Melbourne, and later at Harvard Business School in the USA. I became a banker and served on the Board of Bendigo Bank for 31 years. I became Chair of the Bank, Deputy Chancellor of Melbourne University and Chair of the Australia India Institute.

My education at Ballarat Grammar developed in me a sense of self-reliance and a preparedness to have a go at things. I am sure that none of this would have happened without the Scholarship I received to attend Ballarat Grammar. So, in establishing the Johanson Family Scholarship, we are just repaying some of what I received”.

Robert Johanson (OG’68)

Robert was Chairman of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Limited and of the Australia India Institute. He was a director in charge of Grant Samuel’s Melbourne office for 25 years. He was also a member of the Takeovers Panel, Deputy Chancellor of the University of Melbourne and Chairman of the University’s investment fund for over 15 years.

THE FORD GUTHRIE BOARDING SCHOLARSHIP Following Ford’s death in January 2016, his parents Sarah and Tom and sister Pollyanna, approached Ballarat Grammar with a request to establish the Ford Guthrie Boarding Scholarship in honour of Ford.

Ford commenced as a boarder in Wigan House at Ballarat Grammar in Year 7 and was to have been House Captain and to have completed Year 12 in 2016. Ford embraced all aspects of school life, including study, sport, community service and the Round Square Exchange Program. He was Captain of Shooting and the Cricket Second Eleven, played in the Firsts in Football and Hockey and competed in swimming, rowing, table tennis and athletics. His passion was agriculture and he excelled in his Year 11 Agriculture subject.

Through the generosity of the extended Guthrie family and the Ballarat Grammar Community the Ford Guthrie Boarding Scholarship has been awarded since 2018.

Tom and Sarah Guthrie

Like many rural families, the Guthries’ have a long history in sheep farming in Australia. Whilst diversification has led them to the establishment of a winery, they are carrying on a family tradition of continuous involvement in the sheep industry in Tom and Sarah Guthrie

Australia, which was started by Tom’s great-grandfather in 1847 when he emigrated from Scotland as a fourteen year old.

Your generosity will allow young people to be educated at Ballarat Grammar opening a myriad of opportunities and possibilities for their futures.
