Downtown Crowd: November 2012

Editor’s Corner

CONTENTS

For a long time after I took over the post as editor of Downtown Crowd, I spent a lot of time talking and writing about the building momentum, the great things on the horizon, how amazing this time next year would be for Downtown Pensacola. A new restaurant concept, the Emily Lullo Maritime Park, the expanding entertainment and retail editor options—the coming attractions were dizzying to those of us who had grown accustomed to a rather sleepy Downtown. Luckily, there were a good number of folks who weren’t content with that. There were people and businesses that were already here in Downtown, that had weathered the recession and formed a foundation for the growth we see today. And then there were new people who went out there and took risks. They started businesses, they worked with City government to encourage growth and they championed events, or built on those that were here already. Over the last few years, I’ve heard fewer and fewer peers complain of boredom or pine away for their future lives in Seattle or Brooklyn, the most fun cities ever, one would believe. And just the other day I strolled down a bustling Palafox as people set up for Gallery Night, shopping bag swinging from my hand, breeze blowing through my hair and the chatter of passing groups and families lounging with coffee and sandwiches at sidewalk tables filling my ears. Maybe it wasn’t the cosmopolitan Carrie Bradshaw-esque urban catwalk I was imagining, but it certainly was a very far cry from the Downtown Pensacola of two years ago. And I think the pages of this month’s DTC reflect that. We’re cramming in more stories about both the new and well-established businesses and events than ever, and we still can’t get enough. November brings us the Great Gulfcoast Arts Fair, one of the most popular festivals in the area, and 2012’s final Gallery Night of the year. Check out our Official Guide! Newer events include the Martini Fest on November 10, and the inaugural Mahabhuta Yoga Festival November 16-18, a perfect way to relax before the impending holidays. We’ve also got the big kickoff of Winterfest, which will have some exciting additions this year, and speaking of winter, the first home game for the Ice Flyers is November 2. Check out the Q&A with new head Coach Gary Graham on page 26. And all that’s without even bringing up the multiple projects that are just beginning to manifest up and down the blocks of Contact me at Downtown. I think we have Emily@Ballinger Publishing.com enough to occupy us until those or write to P.O. Box 12665, are unveiled. So, sure, I’d love to Pensacola, FL 32591-2665. visit Seattle and Brooklyn. But Downtown Pensacola is where I work and play, and I’m enjoying the front row seat for its progress.

Downtown Improvement Board

Downtown Residential Continues to Grow While no new residential units were started or completed during the past year, Downtown Pensacola retained its place as the fastest growing neighborhood in the City of Pensacola. A total of 1,212 residential units are now occupied as compared to 1,181 last year; a net gain of over 30 more occupied units than during this same time in 2011. Additionally, statistically for years 2010 and 2011, Downtown residential units recorded a 92 percent occupancy rate, while 2012 recorded a 94 percent occupancy rate. With the addition of 31 more occupied units and the continued growth in average household size (1.89 people per household in 2012), Downtown is now home to 84 more people than it was this time last year. Average household size has been growing each year since 2008. As a

result, 2,290 people now live within the area south of Wright Street, east of “A” Street, west of 17th Street, and north of the shoreline of the bay. Some other interesting (and encouraging) trends about the Downtown residents that have become apparent or become more pronounced this year are illustrated below. • 47 percent of Downtown residents have attained at least a four-year college degree. • 28 percent of Downtown residents have attained at least one advanced degree. • The number of households with income of at least $60,000 per year rose from 57 percent in 2011 to 60 percent in 2012. • 37 percent of all Downtown households have combined incomes in excess of $100,000 per year.

4 The DTC • November 2012 • www.downtowncrowd.com

• The employment rate for Downtown residents dropped slightly from 60 to 56 percent this year, retired residents increased from 31 percent to 37 percent. The remaining 7 percent is comprised of students, small children, and the unemployed. • General Business (14 percent) and Non-profits/Government (14 percent) continue to be the largest employment sectors populated by Downtown residents followed by Education (13 percent), Medical (12 percent) and Retail/Restaurant jobs. • The percentage of Downtown residents that primarily works somewhere other than in Florida or Alabama rose to 8 percent in 2012. • Downtown residents working at a Downtown business ended a four year decline, increasing to 40 in 2012 from 38 percent in 2011. • After growing for each of the preceding three years, the percentage of Downtown residents that moved into Downtown from a location outside of Florida or Alabama fell to from 19 percent in 2011 to 18 percent in 2012. • The percentage of female Downtown residents remained steady in 2012 at 57 percent. • The percentage of households containing children under the age of 18 decreased again slightly to 14 percent. • 37 percent of Downtown households are comprised of just one person. • The Downtown residential population remained steady with 66

By Alexandra Colley DIB Assistant Executive Director

percent of the residents 50 years of age or older. • 37 percent of Downtown residents have lived in the Downtown for five years or less. • The primary reasons that Downtown residents chose to live Downtown continue to be: 1.) the convenient central location, 2.) the ability to walk to most places, 3.) the abundance of cultural attractions and offerings, 4.) the variety and abundance of restaurants and nightclubs, and 5.) the proximity to the waterfront. • 8 percent of Downtown households do not own an automobile – up from 5 percent in 2010 and 6 percent in 2011. • 94 percent of Downtown residents old enough to vote are registered to do so. As can easily be concluded from the data and trend lines highlighted in this executive summary, the residential component of Downtown is stable and growing in many of the desired ways. For a more complete review of the findings from the annual Downtown Residential Census and Survey conducted by the Pensacola Downtown Improvement Board, visit downtownpensacola.com. With numbers like these, it shouldn’t be long before plans for more inventory will again be common. It’s a great time to be in Downtown Pensacola.

Elf Parade & Pensacola WinterFest Kickoff Downtown Pensacola is in for a major holiday season in 2012, kicking off with Winterfest’s Downtown Opening Night. Winterfest introduces Santa’s magic sleigh, a special gift from helpers Rudolph and Frosty. The beloved performance tours and the rest of Winterfest favorites are back, and look out for expanded reindeer games and Winterfest fun abounding in Downtown Pensacola’s snowy wonderland! See what’s new below. Winterfest 2012 is celebrated on weekends from November 23 through December 16 with Santa’s Holiday Express running the week before Christmas. All tours begin at the historic Escambia County Courthouse at 223 Palafox Place. Visit eflparade.com to download and print your elf ears for the Elf Parade, or call 417.7321 for tickets and more info.

Santa's Snowdrift Float in the Winterfest Elf Parade November 23 at 4:45 pm Bring your little elves to line up behind the T.T. Wentworth Museum at 4:45 pm. The parade has grown larger as more elves have joined the traditional march. Santa will be riding in his sleigh, perched on a snowdrift pulled by nine “reindeer.” The ensemble will form a procession on Palafox every night before the tours, delivering Santa to the Courthouse for the beginning of the evening. The snowdrift float has been made for Winterfest by Jared Petticrew. Rudolph and Frosty gave Santa a special machine for his sleigh to bring snow to Florida and all those warm spots where children believe in a white Christmas. The First Gift of Christmas sponsored by the "Make a Wish" Foundation November 23 at 5:30 pm Winterfest was inspired by the theme of the movie Polar Express when Santa chooses a child to receive the first gift of Christmas. On November 23, Santa welcomes a special guest sponsored by the "Make a Wish" Foundation. Tony is three and his wish is a visit with Thomas the Train. Each night of Winterfest, Santa will recognize a special child with a ride in his sleigh to receive a wish. Opening Ceremony to Kick Off Downtown Lights & Snow November 23 at 5:35 pm The Christmas lights in Downtown Pensacola will be turned on by Tony and Santa. Several Winterfest Trolley Tours groups will entertain, along with Seville Quarter's Phoggette dancers. The Winterfest Snow Queen will receive the "Spirit of Winterfest" award.

Reindeer Games November 23 at 6 pm (and every night of Winterfest) After the parade and opening ceremony, Santa's team will lead the reindeer games. The children's favorite activity last year was to become “snowmen” by sitting in the drifts on the Courthouse steps, so this year features a new snow machine with denser snow that can be sprayed on little snowmen. Along with traditional face painting, there will be a Grinch booth where he will be pelted with snowballs. The games will be held every night of Winterfest. The Government Plaza Winterfest will expand into another plaza to give more space for the reindeer games. The Palafox Plaza activities will remain with entertainment around the Christmas tree. This year features a taller tree than ever before, at 21 feet! Winterfest Tour Stops: Scrooge Welcome back, Scrooge, Marley, the Ghosts and Bob Cratchet. They will be performing again at the beginning of the tour. Visits with Santa & Santa Trolley Tours Weekends and December 18-23 Visit Santa and meet the team on weekends and the week before Christmas. Along with the Santa Trolley Tours, children will be able to ride in the Santa's magic sleigh and get an autograph from their favorite reindeer.

The Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival

By Christienne Cloutier

What: Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival When: November 2-4, from 9 am-5 pm

The Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival celebrates more than 200 of the nation’s best painters, potters, sculptors, jewelers, graphic artists and craftsmen. It is a perfect time to enjoy the crisp autumn air and take in the sights of one of the best-regarded, most popular arts festivals in the United States. What makes this festival so unique? “It is one of the few largest arts festivals run entirely by volunteers,” Festival co-chair Claudine Kriss said. “It is ranked 42 in Sunshine Artist, America’s Premier Art and Craft Show Magazine.” Seville Square will host the GGAF on November 2-4 from 9-5 pm. Accompanying the impressive artwork will also be live music and tasty traditional festival fare. Even some of Pensacola’s best-known restaurants will be onsite serving local favorite cuisine. “We average about 150,000 patrons a year,” Kriss said. “People really like the unique location of downtown Pensacola.” There is something for the entire family so bring your kids over to Bartram Park and let them enjoy the Children’s Arts Festival, which features numerous, hands-on artistic opportunities for all ages. Face painting, clay play, a flower shop, button

creations, sand art, sidewalk art, and a balloon man are provided free of charge. The Children’s Festival is open Friday for children with special needs from selected schools and is open to everyone on Saturday and Sunday from 10-4 pm. Also in Bartram Park is the Student Art Show, which showcases the talents of students in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. More than 2,000 pieces of art from elementary, middle and high school students will be on display. The artists compete for a total of $25,000 in prize money in all categories. Last year’s Best of Show winner, Sid Kamerman, has been participating in the festival for 22 years. “It’s in my own hometown so I get to see everybody I know,” Kamerman said. “It’s a lot of fun, everyone has a grand time.” Kamerman, who has lived in Pensacola since 1979, will be showcasing his stainless steel, bronze, marble, and petrified wood sculptures this year at the festival. Live musicians will set the tone for a weekend full of amusement on the Main Stage. Melodies range from bluegrass to Cajun and blues to jazz and classical. Some musicians will include the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, Perdido Brass, Holly Shelton, Tanya Gallagher and many more. The Parrish Performing Arts Stage will showcase dance schools, performing companies, community groups, and area folk groups. The Children’s Stage

features local performing arts, dance, and music groups. The festival celebrates our artisan history in the Heritage Arts Area, where local craft workers demonstrate traditional arts, crafts and trades, including blacksmithing, engraving, spinning, weaving and other skills. “This particular show is a unique cultural experience,” vendor Lisa Loudermilk said. “Pensacola has local flavor that’s fun and authentic.” Loudermilk has been traveling to the festival from Austin, Texas for the last nine years. Her specialty is oil pastel “geometrees” and “moodscapes” paintings. “Obviously the beach is the draw,” Loudermilk said. “but, it’s Pensacola’s charm that keeps us coming back every year.” Each year, the GGAF sponsors a design competition to select the official festival poster. The design is turned into a limited-edition poster, t-shirt, and other items, which will be available for sale at the festival. This year’s poster winner, Ellen McGaughey, mixed the flavor of the festival with the city’s iconic pelican and beach backdrop to create the winning artwork. Admission to the festival is free, as are the programs and maps. Pets are not allowed at the festival. For a unique cultural experience visit the GGAF, and become enriched with beautiful artwork from all over the United States.

Gallery Night Goes Green By Emily Lullo

You may have noticed that Gallery Night has been rapidly increasing in numbers of participants and attendees, but did you know it’s also getting greener? West Florida Recycling has teamed up with Keep Pensacola Beautiful to offer the growing crowds another option for disposing of the many plastic drink cups and bottles, and aluminum cans that are used throughout the night: recycling receptacles. Maybe you’ve seen the roughly 50 recycling containers that have cropped up on the street on Gallery Nights, starting at September’s event. “As people walk along it’s easier for them to put their recycling in,” says Ginny Ward of West Florida Recycling. “They’re spotted everywhere—up and down Palafox. We’re going to try to get the vendors to have them inside as well.” Republic Waste has also partnered for the pick up of the containers. Ward says she’s hoping that once people are aware of and accustomed to the recycling container’s presence, they’ll be more apt to seek out and utilize them for their recyclables during Gallery Night. They’ve already proven a success,

gathering a huge amount of plastic and aluminum during the September 14 event. “It was two big eight-yard, front-load containers full, so that’s a lot,” Ward says. “That’s 16 cubic yards of stuff that was saved from the landfill that night just from what was collected on the street.” For the future, Ward says the group is working toward adding glass to the list of things that can be recycled for next year’s season. Additionally, they hope to expand beyond Gallery Night to some of the many other events on the Downtown calendar. “We’d like to do all those events, like Seafood Festival, arts festivals, we’d like to get all of those events covered, because it’s just so easy to drop your bottle or can in there,” Ward says. The containers make sense for any event where plastic and aluminum are widely used for beverages, but the effort is always in need of sponsors to aid in the costs of labor for putting out and removing the containers. Interested parties can contact West Florida Recycling at 375-7576.

MY CROWD

Mahabhuta Yoga Festival By Emily Lullo

What: Mahabhuta Yoga Festival When: November 16-18 Where: Sanders Beach Community Center Info: mahabhutayogafestival.com

Is the hustle and bustle of the growing Downtown and endless list of events and openings getting you down? Feeling frazzled and listless at the sheer number of leisure and entertainment options that lie before your rapidly filling calendar? Well, clear out the weekend of November 16-18 because the remedy is here. The Mahabhuta Yoga Festival will be taking place that weekend at the Sanders Beach Corinne Jones Community Center. The inaugural fest has been a year in the making according to Stacey Vann, who spearheaded the event. It will feature workshops from yoga instructors from all around the Gulf Coast region. “It’s just cool that there are 24 studios, and that’s with me limiting it from Seaside, Florida to New Orleans,” Vann says. “We have the opportunity to experience all these different teachers and then just come together to really celebrate yoga to celebrate health and wellness, and holistic healing.” Friday, Saturday and Sunday will bring a full schedule of yoga workshops that will run the gamut of diverse yoga styles from Vinyasa to Yin yoga to Thai body work yoga and everything in between. Each workshop will tie in the overarching theme of the entire event, which Vann has chosen to be water. “I chose the water element because of what’s happened to this region with Hurricane Ivan or Dennis or Katrina, with the BP oil spill and at the same sense I’m really wanting to celebrate the resiliency and our community’s ability to reunite and give birth to itself even through all of these major obstacles that have continued to happen,” she says. For an even more healing and relaxation in your

Mahabhuta experience, you can buy spa services from 18 different therapists, offering everything from massage to Reiki to acupuncture in private rooms in the Community Center. All of the yoga workshops will take place in the Community Center as well, except for the slacklining classes, which will take place outside on the grounds. Slacklining is a practice that involves utilizing yoga balancing techniques on a band suspended a foot or so off the ground. While the classes inside require a pass to the festival, the outside area will have a whole festival that anyone in the public is free to explore. There will be a vendor village, food vendors and a kids area.

24 The DTC • November 2012 • www.downtowncrowd.com

There will also be ticketed events for children inside, including kids yoga and a marionette show. On Friday night, the Community Center will host an opening ceremony of sorts with live music. Saturday night will also bring an after party that will happen at Vinyl Music Hall in Downtown Pensacola. Anyone is welcome to purchase tickets and join in for this event that will be part concert, part dance party and part performance. The night will feature artists The Human Experience, Kaminanda & Govinda. “I have three amazing musicians coming in, and we’re having live performances with belly dancers acroyoga and LED hooping, so there’s a whole interesting performance element happening as well that we’re really excited about,” Vann says. “That’ll be the night that if people want to let loose, they can, but it’s off site.” Passes are available for either six workshops or three. There will likely be drop-in rates for one workshop closer to the Festival’s dates. Tickets for workshops and after party are available along with the entire schedule of events and workshops at mahabhutayogafestival.com. Whether you’re looking for some relaxation, a fun fest atmosphere, or you just want to try something new with the practice of yoga, the Mahabhuta Yoga Festival is a welcome addition to the Downtown calendar. “We definitely want people that have maybe never tried yoga to come and try it, but in a comfortable, fun festival setting,” Vann says.

Ice Flyers Coach Gary Graham

Q&A Coach Gary Graham

By Emily Lullo November brings the first home games in the new season for our resident ice hockey team the Pensacola Ice Flyers. The team ended the 2011-2012 season by making it to the President’s Cup Finals and falling just short of the championship to the Columbus Cottonmouths, placing them second in the league. This year will usher in a new era for the team, with a recently updated logo and brand new head coach Gary Graham. Graham comes to the team having spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach for the Fort Wayne Komets, during which time the team won three championships. Prior to his time with the Komets, he played Tier II junior and attended Ball State University, majoring in Exercise Science. Graham was introduced to Pensacola at a town hall meeting this summer, but DTC spoke with him in September about how he’s liking the city and what fans can expect from the Ice Flyers in the coming months. How have you liked Pensacola since you’ve been here? I’ve enjoyed it a lot. The people are very friendly. The one thing I noticed about being down south right away is that there are very well-mannered people, and I like that because I try to teach my kids to say “please” and “thank you” and I hear that all the time down here, which you don’t get that much up north. Everyone’s really embraced me. I went down last night and had dinner at New York Nick’s, who’s a big sponsor of ours, and a lot of people there were introducing themselves to me. It’s really exciting. The community’s been really great so far and I’ve heard nothing but great things and all the people that work here at the rink are very polite and helpful. I’m looking forward to getting some roots in this city. How did you feel about your reception from fans, starting with the town hall meeting where you were initially introduced? Really good. We’ve made some moves as an organization where we’re bringing in some different faces and some guys that the fans had some loyalties to are getting opportunities elsewhere. The overall thing is that we’re moving in a new direction this

26 The DTC • November 2012 • www.downtowncrowd.com

year. The guys we have coming in are very exciting players and we feel we’re going to have a very competitive training camp and we’re going to have a really competitive roster going into that big opening night in Columbus. Would you say you have any particular coaching philosophy? I think any coaching philosophy is going to sound cliché, but it’s just having a team that can compete night in, night out. I want a consistent and persistent team. We want to do things a certain way and hold ourselves accountable to perform in a certain way. At the end of the night, you’re not going to win them all but as long as we can look in the mirror and realize that we put forth that effort, then there’s nothing to be disappointed with. What do you think are the team’s biggest strengths? We’ve got a good blend of skill, speed and size up front with our forwards and I think we’re going to be very deep at the center men position, which is important in the system of how I like to play. With Christie coming back, he proved that he was a top flight goaltender last year. Getting him onboard was a big part of the puzzle this off season. Are there any new players to watch this season that you’d like to mention? Leo Thomas, Ryan Salvis and Tyler Soehner are going be my three captains so those will be the three players I’d like to mention. They’re going to be part of my leadership core and guys that we’re going to rely on as an organization to lead by example both on and off the ice. Is there anything else you want to add? We really want to see the fan support start this season where it left off last year. The organization set an SPHL playoff attendance record last year and was very exciting and it’s exciting for me to know that there was that buzz around town last year with the playoff run. We want to start off on the right foot and put a great product on the ice and have the community rally around it.

Film In which we unfairly judge coming attractions based solely on their trailers By Josh Newby

Editor’s note: Sick of my indifference to action trailers and unbridled enthusiasm for 3D films made for children? Well, good! I’m likewise sick of writing about it! This month, we feature the equally unfair but seemingly better researched trailer critiques of editorial assistant Josh Newby. -Emily

Where I’m spending my $8: Flight In theaters: November 2 Starring: Denzel Washington, John Goodman, Don Cheadle, Bruce Greenwood, Kelly Reilly What I got from the preview: A pilot whose plane is experiencing technical difficulties successfully lands it and saves the lives of everyone on board. After an initial investigation into the cause of the crash begins, it is revealed Washington’s character Whip Whitaker may have been abusing alcohol and other illegal substances. A legal battle and possible conspiracy ensues. Most notable for: Welcoming back two titans of film, Denzel Washington and Robert Zemeckis, who have been absent from Oscar-caliber drama for too long. Unqualified critical observation: I am a huge fan of both Denzel Washington (American Gangster, Man on Fire, Remember the Titans) and Robert Zemeckis, (Cast Away, Forrest Gump, Back to the Future). This film marks a return to form with character-driven drama for them both. This movie will be good, but even if it’s not, it will be refreshing to see these two at the top of their game.

Lincoln In theaters: November 9 Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, John Hawkes, Tommy Lee Jones, Sally Field What I got from the preview: A behind-the-scenes look at the Lincoln Presidency during the Civil War and leading up to his assassination, with glimpses of his past revealed. Lots of political dialogue, Congressional speeches, and some epic war scenes to boot. Most notable for: Lincoln’s (played by Day-Lewis) surprisingly high-pitch, yet authoritative voice. It is historical speculation that his voice was pre-pubescent, and this film attempts no compromises by trying to make his voice more quintessentially presidential. Unqualified critical observation: Spielberg is, and will always be, one of the greatest directors of ours, or any other, generation. By the same token, Day-Lewis is a committed method actor whose roles in There Will Be Blood and My Left Foot showcase him as an unparalleled choice for one of the most esteemed and recognizable presidents ever. However, I am keeping my expectations low because of Spielberg’s recent underwhelming efforts. Historical Spielbergian dramas like this are either wonderful and thought-provoking, like Saving Private Ryan, or mind-numbingly boring, like Amistad. I’ll give my boy Spielberg a shot and buy a ticket. Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 In theaters: November 16 Starring: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning What I got from the preview: After the birth of their human-vampire hybrid child, those impossibly attractive Cullens gather other bored vampire clans to protect the child from a false accusation that puts the family in front of the Volturi, or something. Lots of dizzying CGI and awkward 20-somethings acting like teens who act like children. Most notable for: Being the finale of one of top-grossing movie franchises of all times. Unqualified critical observation: Here we go again. This series is not nearly as good as its world-phenomenonadaptation predecessor Harry Potter, or even its somewhat uneven successor, The Hunger Games. The Twilight movies and culture are coming to a thankful close this November. The only good things about these movies are the countless parodies that accompany their release. I will not be attending the midnight premiere, nor any subsequent viewings, ever.

28 The DTC • November 2012 • www.downtowncrowd.com

Silver Linings Playbook In theaters: November 21 Starring: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert de Niro What I got from the preview: Newly-crowned Hollywood leading man Bradley Cooper plays Pat Solitano, Jr., a somewhat loveable loser who is trying to win back his exwife after he caught her cheating. He meets another “married” woman, played by Jennifer Lawrence, who is also dealing with the pain of recent loss, though her husband died and she hasn’t quite come to terms with it. A romance ensues, and they take up dancing? Maybe I missed something. Most notable for: Jennifer Lawrence of Hunger Games fame and Bradley Cooper pretending to have an accent I can’t quite identify. Unqualified critical observation: Early critical reviews of the film are positive, and it looks like it has lots of drama, punctuated with some chuckle-worthy humor. The trailer seems to be all over the place, though, as trailers often are in order to appeal to as wide a demographic as possible. Lawrence is lovely as always and it’s exciting to see her continue her trend of adult roles after Winter’s Bone, but it seems like something is fundamentally off about the movie. I’ll probably end up renting it for a night. Red Dawn In theaters: November 21 Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Isabel Lucas, Jeffrey Dean Morgan What I got from the preview: A remake of the 1984 film with Patrick Swayze. The original saw an invasion of America from an unnamed Soviet country, and this version gets more specific by making it North Korea. Everything else seems pretty similar. A small team of teenagers band together against the invasion to defend their town and country. The original was exceptionally violent for its PG13 rating, and this one seems to take on more of a mock violence tone. Most notable for: Being another remake. Occasionally, Hollywood is good to us and spits out a worthy remake, but not often. Unqualified critical observation: It almost certainly won’t be as good and controversial as the original, but it will likely provide some casual, popcorn action for those looking to get out of the house around Thanksgiving weekend and are unwilling to invest in this season’s Oscar fodder. This movie also features Chris Hemsworth’s veiny arms and Josh Peck of Drake & Josh fame, so there’s that. Ultimately, it may be a good movie to see with the older members of my family, but I won’t be making a solo effort to see it.

Cirque du Soleil Brings Saltimbanco to Pensacola By Emily Lullo

Cirque du Soleil Presents Saltimbanco Where: Pensacola Bay Center When: November 7 & 8; 7:30 pm Info: cirquedusoleil.com.

Pensacola is getting a treat this month, as the colorful and enchanting Cirque du Soleil makes the final rounds with its touring show, Saltimbanco, when it comes to the Pensacola Bay Center. Saltimbanco is the longest running touring show in the Cirque du Soleil repertoire and it has been performed in 45 countries around the globe. It will close for good this December in the home of the company in Montreal, Canada but not before our own city gets to experience the extravaganza for two nights only on November 7 and 8. The title of the performance, Saltimbanco, comes from the Italian “saltare in banco,” which literally means to jump on the bench. The show celebrates urban life in all its forms, from towering streetscapes to the hustle and bustle on the sidewalks below. According to its website, “Saltimbanco is a Cirque du Soleil signature show inspired by the urban fabric of the metropolis and its colorful inhabitants. Decidedly baroque in its visual vocabulary, the show’s eclectic cast of characters draws spectators into a fanciful, dreamlike world, an imaginary city where diversity is a cause for hope.” The colorful array of characters and the variety of acts capture the imaginations of the audience members, and audience members might even be dragged into the action onstage. Saltimbanco makes use of clowns, large groups of multicolored and masked “worms,” a proud ringmaster, a fanciful child, the sleepy dreamer and many more.

Chinese Poles

Acts include Adagio, a show of strength with three performers whose bodies combine to mod into shapes and forms. The kaleidoscope of “worms” will slither onstage and climb high on Chinese poles to mimic soaring skyscrapers. There will also be a performance with boleadoras, which are simple percussion instruments from Argentina that are made of a weight attached to the end of a cord. The boleadora performers will make exuberant rhythms while performers dance to their beats. Attendees can also look forward to acrobatics on the Russian swing, strongmen that test the physical limits of their bodies, and bungee performers that sail through the air high above the stage. Cirque du Soleil shows combine music, performance the skills and acrobatics of the highest grade professional performers, bringing concepts to life with vivid imagery and breathtaking artistry. Amazing stunts and evocative stories are a signature of these shows, and this is the first and last opportunities for Pensacola to get a taste of Cirque du Soleil’s high quality showcases in our hometown. Tickets for adults run from $43 to $93, and for children, $35 to $75. Tickets are available, military and group discount tickets available, please call 432-0800 ext. 221. Tickets are available at Pensacola Bay Center Box Office, all Ticketmaster Outlets, or through cirquedusoleil.com.

Business Profile By Christienne Cloutier

A Luminous Life Hypnotherapy Susan Dunlop

S

Susan Dunlop creates positive change through hypnosis in Pensacola, where she owns A Luminous Life Hypnotherapy. Few people realize that the foundation of hypnosis is love, which is certainly the most profoundly motivating force for change in life. Susan describes the hypnosis experience to be like a warm spring breeze. New perspective, new dreams, hopes and promise emerge. In hypnosis, although you are completely aware and in control, you feel wrapped in beauty; you feel finally home; you feel loved and worthy of love. “People usually come to me as a last resort,” Susan said. “I help tap into the client’s own inner resources.” Susan is an internationally certified consulting hypnotist trained by the American Academy of Hypnotherapy. She attended the University of Maine and the University of Vermont and earned her MA from Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario. She is a member of the National Guild of Hypnotists in the U.S. and the National Council for Hypnotists in the U.K.

Susan has recently relocated her practice from Yorkshire, England to Pensacola. She is a lifelong student of metaphysics and spirituality and a mediator of 30 years. “It’s not a matter of me waving a magic wand,” Susan said. “This is for people that really want to change 100 percent.” Susan offers many different hypnosis sessions that are tailored towards weight loss, bereavement, relationships, divorce recovery, smoking cessation, stress management, confidence, depression, sleep, motivation, phobias, negative habits, stage fright, decision making, direction, trauma, past life regression, positive thinking, sports excellence, academic focus and pain management. In a typical hypnotherapy session, the client discusses their life, challenges, and goals for 45 minutes. Then the client is hypnotized for 45 minutes, during which time they are awake, alert, and in control. With the exception of past life regression, clients usually say and do nothing in hypnosis, merely listen actively to the

hypnotherapist. Hypnosis is actually such a lovely, natural state of being that often people don’t even realize that they are hypnotized. “Weight loss is the bread and butter of what I do,” Susan said. “I help change my clients thought and behavior patterns, which in turn change their relationship to food.” Slimming clients commit to attending a minimum of four consecutive weekly sessions and to listening to the recordings of the sessions daily. Those who listen faithfully to the recordings generally lost an average of three pounds per week at first and permanently change the way they think about food. “It not like in the movies,” Susan said. “It’s more of a meditational state or zone.” Hypnosis nurtures abilities and potential that already exists within a person, but that remain untapped or underdeveloped because of past experiences, lack of training or understanding. “I help people to see the possibility

for healthy positive change and then give them techniques to facilitate those changes,” Susan said. Susan explains a therapeutic trance as a period during which subjects are able to break out of their limited frameworks and belief systems so they can experience other patterns of functioning within themselves. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotherapist is your guide on your exhilarating journey to create your life according to your vast potential. Susan sets well-defined parameters for healing and growth. Susan explains that looking at your life with the eyes of your higher self is, indeed, a heartwarming and inspiring adventure. It can open you to love of self, love of life, and love of the glorious and beautiful mystery of being divinely human. A Luminous Life Hypnotherapy is located at 1412 East Strong Street in Pensacola. For more information visit luminouslifehypnotherapy.com or call Susan Dunlop at 346-7865.

850 Open Water “850 Open Water” is a new crustacean, oyster, and frozen drink bar that will be opening up on S. Palofox Place in mid to late November. Local entrepreneur, Joe Abston, is at it again creating tasty dishes and adding a new spin with 10-12 rotating homemade flavors of frozen beverages for guests to enjoy. Many will savor frozen margaritas, bushwhackers and more exotic fruits like passionfruit and mango. One signature drink will be the Jack Daniels and Coca-Cola Slushy. Abston, who also owns Hopjacks Pizza Kitchen & Taproom and Tin Cow, decided to open a restaurant that offers something unique to Downtown. “We don’t want to compete with neighboring businesses," he said. “We want to complement the community with items you can’t get anywhere else.” 850 will not only have one of the biggest selections of frozen drinks, but it will also have a succulent menu filled with crustaceans and other juicy seafood.

“We wanted to bring in an eclectic menu that focused on seafood that is boiled and steamed,” Abston said. Some popular items Abston believes will be crowd pleasers are the jalapeno hush puppies, lobster roll, which contains the fresh cooked meat of lobster, wild Jonah crab claws, which closely resemble Dungeness Crab, Red King Crab, Louisianan crawfish and Chesapeake blue crab. Some of the restaurant's signature dishes will include a chilled seafood salad mixed with calamari and shrimp, Cajun fries and a blue crab roll with light seasonings on a buttered grilled bun. Abston came up with the name for the restaurant after some massive brainstorming. “850” keeps it a local homegrown eatery. “Open Water” means that the seafood they serve will not just be from the Gulf Coast, but from all corners of the ocean. Abston picked the location at 22 S. Palofox Place because of the beautiful building and exposed brick. “We wanted a laid back atmosphere with a mix of picnic tables,” he said. “We wanted to turn this

building into something that was a staple for the community.” Adding to its relaxed ambiance will be country, Southern rock and zydeco bands performing on the weekends. The Southern inspired music will be a perfect complement to all the boiled and steamed food. Even non-seafood lovers will be able to enjoy the restaurants’ food, because not everything will come from the ocean. “We’re going to have a diverse menu that’s not just seafood,” Abston said. “We’ll have a couple fried items as well, but not too many.” One interesting take on a salad is what Abston likes to call “the wedgie.” It features a fresh cut wedge of romaine lettuce, crispy bacon, cherry tomatoes and a homemade bleu cheese dressing. “850 Open Water” will be opened on Sunday through Wednesday from 11 am to midnight and Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 2 am. Food will be served until closing. Look for the grand opening in November and make sure to stop in and grab a frozen drink and delicious meal.

Veterans Day Parade Falls on the 100th Anniversary of Marine Aviation From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, they have fought our country's battles in the air, on land and sea. This year provides yet another opportunity to celebrate our country’s worthy veterans. Last year was the 100th anniversary of Naval aviation, and the Pensacola Veterans Day Parade was the most heavily attended in the city’s history. This year, Chief George Dodge of the Gulf Coast Veterans Advocacy Council is expecting to eclipse those numbers. Traditionally celebrated on November 11 to coincide with the end of the World War I conflict, the parade and holiday will be celebrated this year on Monday, November 12 and will fall on the 100th anniversary of Marine aviation. “This year, our parade will focus on the multiethnicity and multi-nationalism of our veterans,” said Dodge, a Native American veteran himself. “We want this parade to be all-inclusive because the military is allinclusive.” The parade starts next to Maritime Park and follows Main St. to the Veterans Memorial Park. The parade is expected to start at 9 am and should continue until almost 11 am. Admission is free.

Greeks, Shriners and other ethnicities will have floats and active roles in the parade, lending to the international feel of the celebration. Also joining the lineup will be the Thunderbird Honor Guard of Native American veterans. Area legions and veterans associations have been planning the event for months, and Dodge reported that they couldn’t be more excited to get it underway. Almost 25 neighborhood organizations are also participating.

Thunderbird Honor Guard

By Josh Newby

“The point of all this is to remember our veterans,” said Dodge. “That is the thrust of the parade.” Local bands are also attending the event to help celebrate veterans, as are Downtown police and fire departments. According to Dodge, the support from the community has been overwhelming and he hopes that this will result in increased awareness and attendance. “Whatever we can do to help everyone remember the service of our veterans, we plan to,” said Dodge. “And not only that, but we want to remember the sacrifice of and honor those who have served our country but may not be American by birth.” For many of those who served in the military but were not born in America, this is a very valuable time for them, because it helps them feel appreciated and wanted by their adoptive country. Many past participants and audience members recall feeling that the parade was the first time they truly felt American. For others, the parade is a wonderful chance to reflect on the services of all who have served, living and deceased, to keep our country free. Ten-year-old Chloe Channel will perform the National Anthem.
