Bowling For Soup Q&A with Frontman Jaret Reddick by Nicole Willis

J
aret Reddick is a musician, songwriter, actor and the lead singer and guitarist of the pop-punk band Bowling for Soup. You might know the group from their 2004 hit 1985.
As Bowling for Soup’s 30 year anniversary approaches this year, the Texas-born band continues to rock together on both national and international tours. On January 23, Bowling for Soup will bring their Lovin’ the Sun tour with co-headliner Lit to Vinyl Music Hall in downtown Pensacola. We had a chance to catch up with Reddick ahead of the group’s upcoming show in Pensacola to talk all things Bowling for Soup and pop punk, as well as learn about some of his latest projects as the band continues to captivate audiences with their witty lyrics and high-energy live performances. Tickets to see Bowling for Soup live at Vinyl Music Hall on January 23 start at $35 and can be purchased online at vinylmusichall.com. To keep up with the band and their latest projects, follow @bowlingforsoup on Facebook or @bfs_official on Instagram.
JR: Well, there really wasn’t much of a punk scene when we were growing up—it was kind of just all stuff that we either saw on TV, or heard on albums [that were] passed down. The way that music used to spread [was by] somebody giving you a cassette or something. All of us had pretty normal childhoods, we ran around and shot BB guns and got dirty and rode motorcycles. I think all of us got bit by the music bug around the same time, and the kind of music that was drawing us in was what would later be [known as] pop punk. We didn’t really realize that we were helping to create [the genre] at the time. It was a good childhood and a good early band life as well.

DTC: What was it like growing up in Texas and getting into the punk scene?

DTC: Over the years, how have your influences changed or impacted your music? JR: What actually influences me [has changed]. I think back to the early days of writing songs, it was music, television, movies and things like that. Now, life influences me. I’m a father of three, a husband, a dog owner, a bandmate, a friend and those kinds of things. I like to sing about my life. It’s WHAT influences me that changes. I sort of take from every little piece of my life and my experience and try to put that into what it is I’m singing about. DTC: How did you get into voice acting after having been a singer for so many years?
DTC: In what ways did growing up in the South influence your music? JR: I think mostly lyrically, just because listening to what my parents listened to [became] the kind of music that I listen to. You know, you’re in the car a lot as a kid and you listen to what your parents listened to. So Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kenny Rogers and things like that, it’s all just storytellers. That’s really how I learned songwriting—I loved the stories behind their songs. I think that would be the biggest influence for sure. DTC: You released your first country album, Just Woke Up, in 2022. What prompted you to write and record a country music album after creating pop punk and rock music for almost 30 years? JR: Releasing a country record was kind of always on the table for me. As I said, that’s what I grew up listening to. As Bowling for Soup got busier and busier, it became something that I didn’t know if I’d ever get a chance to do. But, the pandemic—though it took a lot of things away from us—did was afford us some time to go back and do some of these things. During the first year of lockdown, I wrote a Bowling for Soup record and we isolated and recorded it. Then the second year started, and I was like ‘Man, I think I finally got the time to do this!’ and I’m really glad I did it. I’m actually on the road with my country band as I’m talking right now. We’re down in Corpus Christi playing and we’re having a ball doing it. It’s been a successful first year for us and I’m really glad to be able to write those songs. It’s just a whole other outlet for me, artistically and another side of me that I get to show people. It’s exciting. DTC: What can people expect from a live Bowling for Soup show? JR: The good thing about our shows is that you kind of don’t know what to expect; we don’t use a setlist and we don’t pre-plan our comedy bits, it’s almost like you’re just hanging out with your friends. It’s a lot of fun. We’ll be playing with Lit and The Dollyrots, and those bands are family to us. [I’m] really excited to get there. The tour is just going to be a lot of fun [and a] lot of laughs. DTC: Can you tell me a little bit more about your relationship with the guys from Lit? Why did you decide to tour together? JR: We started out as fans of them because they had a hit when we were coming up. We have seen them several times, but we also had a bunch of mutual friends. I guess we met them around 20 years ago. We’ve crossed paths many times and have become friends over the years. We’re fans of them as people and we’re fans of them as a band. I think it just affords the people coming to the show a really great night of pop punk, rock and roll and a lot of smiles. Our two bands playing together just makes a lot of sense.
JR: Well, I was an actor as a kid, so being able to be creative with my voice and my body is something that I have always been able to do. When I got the chance to start working on some of the shows that I was doing musically, Phineas and Ferb being the biggest one, I was able to just ask and say, ‘Hey, I think I would be great,’ or at least ‘I think I’d be able to pull this off.’ The guys from Phineas and Ferb gave me a shot and let me audition. I actually got a bigger part than [the part] I auditioned for. That then led to other doors opening for me because then I could just say, ‘Hey, I’m doing this and I’d like to get more into it.’ Really just some luck, some determination and not being afraid to ask is really what got me there. DTC: What are your thoughts on the current pop-punk scene? And who are some of the artists that you enjoy that are coming up right now? JR: I think it’s a thriving scene. It was a few years ago when Mod Sun and MGK (Machine Gun Kelly) sort of revitalized the young people to pay attention to it. Now, we’ve got blink-182 back together and music festivals like When We Were Young—there are just so many things happening in this genre. You’ve [also] got New Found Glory, Yellowcard, Story of the Year and Bowling for Soup all out celebrating albums that came out 20 years ago. It’s just a good time to be in pop punk. I love a lot of bands that are coming up in this time, and I’m rediscovering some bands that maybe I didn’t listen to the first go around. There are TikTok bands like Loveless, who are out there doing it and kind of doing it in new ways, which is super cool. Then there are bands like CLIFFDIVER, Don’t Panic and Eternal Boy that are doing it more of the old-fashioned way and getting out there, grinding on the road and making sure that they’re connecting with the fans. It’s fun from my perspective, to just be able to watch and to be fans of them and to take them on the road when we can. I’m just a fan of music and I’m a fan of people and it’s cool to see. DTC: What are some of the new things that you or the band are currently working on? JR: Well, [I have] lots of country stuff coming out soon. Bowling for Soup will also be touring next year. It’s 30 years of us being Bowling for Soup and 20 years of A Hangover You Don’t Deserve, so there’s a lot to celebrate. We’ll be doing a few international things in the spring months. Then starting next summer, it’ll all be [about] celebrating the life of the band and this album. Then on into 2025, hopefully [we’ll] be looking at new music!

Pensacola’s ‘Cool-Cat’ Lounge & Coffee Shop by Madeleine Davis

top hissing and retract your claws, Pensacola, because our first
and only cat cafe, Coastal Cat Cafe, located at 1508 W Garden St., is officially open for business. Completely selling out of reservations on opening day, this coastal-themed cat lounge and cafe boasts a “purrrfect” cozy vibe featuring numerous cats to mingle with and a variety of tasty coffee beverages. Coastal Cat Cafe was established by local Adrienne Brynteson, who raised the initial funding for the unique business concept as a Kickstarter campaign. Not only are there sweet, purring cats and kittens to play with, but there are numerous coffee beverages and delectable treats to indulge in. The cat lounge is separated from the cafe to ensure that each cat has a safe and stress-free environment. Coastal Cat Cafe opened in partnership with Panhandle Animal Welfare Society and Pensacola Foster Kittens and showcases around 12 to 18 adoptable cats and kittens. These nonprofit organizations are dedicated to the welfare of animals and provide specific programs and resources throughout the community. Pensacola Foster Kittens specializes in rescuing and rehoming cats and also helps to organize low-cost transports to spay and neuter clinics. All proceeds from adoptions go directly to benefit these local organizations. The cat lounge has a $15 entry fee for a 45-minute play session, and reservations are encouraged as the space has a maximum capacity of 10 people. Groups of seven or more are required to reserve a private party. The cafe portion has no paid entry, and offers plenty of seating for studying or relaxing. Complimentary WiFi is available for customers at the cafe.

Coastal Cat Cafe’s menu consists of numerous espresso-based drinks from local roaster Fix Coffee. They also have a few non-coffee beverages available, such as hot chocolate, tea and locally made Big Jerk Soda. The cafe also serves multiple finger foods to choose from, like special pastries from Craft Bakery, hummus and crackers and Second Wind’s specially made trail mix called Meow Mix. While the cafe is always open during business hours, the cat lounge may be closed for private parties, paint classes or yoga sessions. More information on future events can be found on the Coastal Cat Cafe website and social media pages. Volunteer opportunities are available on the cafe’s website, along with kitty wishlists and donation information at coastalcatpcola.com Coastal Cat Cafe presents the paw-mazing opportunity to relax with a “catpuccino” and a purring resident cat on your lap, or if you prefer your cats with the zoomies, plenty of string toys are also available to play with. If you find a feline friend you just can’t live without, be sure to tell a cat lounge attendant so you can fill out an adoption application form. The adoption process can take one to two weeks. Brynteson said that her goal for the cat cafe is to serve as a platform for giving back and empowering our local community. She hopes to adopt out 100 cats within the first year. The cat cafe is closed on Mondays, and their operating hours are available on their website coastalcatpcola.com. Find out more about private events and more information on their Instagram page @coastalcatpcola.

Let The Good Times Roll! 2024 Pensacola Mardi Gras Parades & Events
by Morgan Cole
M
ardi Gras is upon us once again, and here in Pensacola
we know how to let the good times roll! The Friday after New Year’s Day always signifies the start of Pensacola’s vibrant Mardi Gras season, and it all starts with a festive street party taking over downtown. With deep French roots, it’s no wonder our city was the stomping grounds for some of the first Mardi Gras celebrations in the United States. There’s a lot of hearsay about Pensacola’s history with Mardi Gras and whether or not it was the first celebration in the United States. According to Pensacola Mardi Gras, Pensacola’s Mardi Gras history goes back to 1874 when the Knights of Priscus first formed. At the time, many of our Gulf Coast neighbors, namely New Orleans and Mobile, were already hosting Mardi Gras celebrations. Today, nearly 150 years later, the celebration has grown to become one of the largest in the area, drawing nearly 100,000 spectators to downtown Pensacola each year. The 2024 Mardi Gras season is set to be bigger and better than ever before, with a host of new and returning events happening across the city from now until the end of February. “We are excited to make the 2024 Pensacola Mardi Gras Season presented by Publix bigger and better than ever. With a grant from the Tourism Development Council and Escambia County Commissioners, Pensacola Mardi Gras Foundation is able to really fuel some regional growth for our Mardi Gras in 2024,” Pensacola Mardi Gras Foundation, Inc. (PMG) President Danny Zimmern explained. “We are also putting together a new event, The
Pensacola Mardi Gras Mambo, [which] will be a Mardi Gras party in the Pensacola Bay Center including both traditional Mardi Gras anthems, dancing, and includes headlining artist Flo Rida! Flo Rida will have Pensacola’s krewe royalty on stage with him as we combine his hits with our Mardi Gras spirit.” If you’ve never experienced a Mardi Gras celebration in Pensacola, you’re in for a treat because nobody does it quite like we do. Take in all that our local Mardi Gras season has to offer at one or all of these upcoming events.
Pensacola Mardi Gras Kick-Off on the 12th Night When: January 6 @ 5 pm Where: East Garden District, Downtown Pensacola
Start the first night right by attending the 12th Night Pensacola Mardi Gras Kick-Off Celebration in the East Garden District on Jefferson Street, just north of Garden Street, as visitors and locals alike line Seville Quarter to take part in the launch of the 2024 Carnival season. Described as a static parade, this citywide celebration will feature more than 40 parked floats lining the downtown streets starting at 5 pm, while revelers parade among the floats and visit with krewes. Throughout the evening, the stationary floats will be visited by a second-line procession – a traditional New Orleans-style foot parade led by a brass band and followed by casual revelers. At the head of the second line, a priest along with local dignitaries and governmental officials bless the floats and present each Krewe with a customary certificate recognizing their commitment to the Mardi Gras season. The second line starts with revelry at Seville Quarter. The procession ends at the intersection of Jefferson and Government streets where king cake will be served, while supplies last. For complete event details, visit pensacolamardigras.com.

Talks Music Career, Touring & Cultural Identity by Nicole Willis
widely for tracks such as King Without a Crown and One Day. Born Matthew Paul Miller, Matisyahu is Miller’s stage name under which he has built a lengthy career spanning multiple genres.
Matisyahu is most known for his fusion of reggae, hip-hop and rock sounds that create a distinctly bold style unique to him. For nearly two decades, he’s kept his creative spirit aflame by evolving his sound, melding genres and testing the limits of the musical traditions that have inspired him. He outwardly embraces both the spirit of reggae and his roots in Judaism through his lyricism and music. Many of Matisyahu’s songs explore spiritual themes, drawn from his own spiritual experiences growing up in and around Jewish culture. Dowtown Crowd had the opportunity to catch up with Matisyahu and talk about his upcoming tour in support of his forthcoming EP, Hold The Fire, which is set to be released on February 2. Matisyahu will kick off his latest tour at Vinyl Music Hall in downtown Pensacola on January 31. Tickets start at $33.50 and can be purchased online at vinylmusichall.com. To learn more about Matisyahu and his work, check out @Matisyahu on Facebook and Instagram. DTC: You have experimented with a variety of genres throughout your career. What artists or specific influences have helped to inspire you and your music? Matisyahu: At the current moment, the music most inspiring to me has been Afropop artists. Black Sheriff has been an influential artist for me over the last couple of years in terms of some of the music that I’m going to be releasing now. In terms of live music, Phish is always one of my top inspirations. They’re one of the only bands that I actually go watch for fun. In terms of other inspiration, I mean, what’s going on
right now. Israel is pretty inspirational in the sense that it’s important and affects my music in the sense that my Jewish identity kind of brings me back to the beginning of my career. DTC: Can you tell me more about the origin of your name? Matisyahu: Matisyahu is the character in the story of Hanukkah. He is the high priest and has a family of sons called the Maccabee soldiers. They are led by Judah Maccabee and defeat the Syrian army, which infiltrated Jerusalem and destroyed the temple and fought off the destruction for a few more years until the Second Temple was destroyed. So yeah, it’s [the name of] a biblical character. Photo by Juliana Ronderos

DTC: What was it like becoming a popular musician in a religious environment? How did people in your community react to your fame and success? Matisyahu: Well, initially, there were a lot of people that were questioning it. But once I started having some success, most of the religious Chabad community where I was living in Crown Heights [Brooklyn, New York] was pretty supportive in the sense that they felt like one of their own was out there, and as long as I was representing them in a positive light, I think they felt it was a powerful or meaningful experience. DTC: How do your religious or spiritual values inform or influence your music? Matisyahu: Well, I’m not really religious in the sense of a religion. You know what I’m saying? I do believe in God, and I do still practice Judaism, at times, in certain ways. It influences [the music] in the sense that my lyrics and my whole approach to music, I wouldn’t say only comes from a spiritual place, but it definitely originated in some ways from my Jewish identity .So, with what’s happening now with antisemitism, I feel that aspects come back to me because it [spirituality] wasn’t necessarily the main focus of my work for the last decade. It has been a little bit less centered on God, less centered on Judaism and more just about life, existential experience, spirituality, struggles, everyday struggles, like the human experience more. In some ways, it was like a return to who I was before I was religious, and that’s kind of been at the forefront of the music, even though it’s always been informed by my experience within Judaism and specifically, Hasidic Judaism. As of lately, I’m noticing those like very strong Jewish feelings coming back up.
really hard-hitting roots, reggae songs, and then some great rock improvisations and jabs. There’s also a hip-hop aspect to what I do. I think it’s all very organic. In some ways, it’s kind of loose. I think the show is empowering; I think it ideally leads people into some sort of joyful, ecstatic feeling of unification with the music and the people in the room. Especially now, when people are feeling alone, and [there is] a lot of separation. Like last night, we played a show, and I feel that you can really notice a difference from the start of the show to the end. It feels like everyone let down their guard and became unified, and that’s always the goal of my shows. On this upcoming tour, I think I’m going to also be trying to play the songs from the new EP as well, so it’ll be a mixture of all those things. DTC: A dollar of every ticket sale for your live shows goes to support the Last Prisoner Project—a nonprofit organization dedicated to cannabis criminal justice reform. What inspired you to support this specific nonprofit? Matiyahu: I was brought into it by my manager who has had some success with that program with some of his other bands. And it’s a great cause—it’s people who are incarcerated for marijuana offenses. Marijuana, as we know, should have never been illegal. The fact that it was [illegal] ruined people’s lives. It is now legal, and there’s still people sitting in jails or getting out of jails whose lives have been destroyed. So, we try to give money to help people in that situation.
The music has always been kind of influenced by my original experiences and by the Hasidic experience that I had and my Jewish identity. Over time, it [spiritual experiences] became less like the central force of it. And, in a way, I kind of came back to in some sense who I was prior to my becoming Hasidic. With what’s happening now and like a lot of antisemitism and after the massacre, I feel like all the original Jewish identity is like coming in strong and I feel like that whole thing is like an ebb and flow. You know what I mean? At different times, it [spiritual themes] becomes more central in my music, and other times it falls into the background of the human experience or my personal experience. DTC: Can you tell me a little about your upcoming EP? Matisyahu: The EP is called Hold The Fire, and it has a handful of songs on it that I recorded last winter and spring. The concept is sort of an exploration of the idea of being able to have stamina and endurance as an artist and as a human being. DTC: What can people expect from your live performances? Matisyahu: The live shows are a real mixture of things. I try to incorporate the big songs like One Day, Jerusalem, Time of Your Song and King Without that a Crown. Then, I try to play at least one song off of every album, if possible. And then I would say about 40 percent of the show is improvisation—so, different types of jams, where I will blend different lyrics from different songs and kind of explore through the music. So, [the live shows are] really a combination of some

Pensacola Opera’s 41st Season Productions at the Historic Saenger Theatre
by Darien Hardy
Pensacola Opera is returning to the historic Saenger Theatre for its 41st season mainstage productions with a packed schedule of crowdfavorite performances and community events. Chandra McKern, general director for Pensacola Opera, and Corey McKern, artistic director for Pensacola Opera, are professionally trained opera singers who have performed at the famous Metropolitan Opera in New York City. “Our 41st Anniversary season promises to delight our current attendees and welcome new audiences with two classic opera productions, innovative special events, and some of the most exciting voices working in opera today,” Chandra said. “We are bringing in two world class directors this year who have a combined 80 years plus in the opera business,” Corey said. “Both of our mainstage productions, (Lucia di Lammermoor) and Die Fledermaus are full of excellent, challenging music and have great stories. With these directors and our excellent casts, I have no doubt our audience can expect world class operas in our lovely small town.” Pensacola Opera will open their 41st season with Gaetano Donizetti’s Italian bel canto opera Lucia. With performances on January 26 and 28, this dramatic powerhouse makes its return to the Saenger stage. Lucia follows Lucia Ashton, who is madly in love with Edgardo, leader of the Ravenswoods, her family’s fiercest political enemies. However, to save their family from poverty, her brother Enrico has already arranged her marriage to Lord Arturo Bucklaw. Caught in the middle of the two rival families, Lucia loses her strength and
descends into madness, leading to the opera’s tragic conclusion. Donizetti’s beautifully tumultuous score is highlighted by the iconic “Mad Scene,” an extended, virtuosic showpiece made famous by sopranos such as Joan Sutherland, Maria Callas and Beverly Sills. Lucia features an exciting all-debut cast of professional artists, including singers from Pensacola Opera’s own Jan Miller Studio Artist program. Starring as Lucia is soprano Abigail Rethwisch, playing opposite Andrew Morstein as Lucia’s true love, Edgardo. Bass-baritone Richard Ollarsaba plays Lucia’s brother Enrico who arranges her marriage with Lord Arturo Bucklaw, played by renowned tenor and teacher Jason Ferrante. The cast is rounded out by mezzo-soprano Alexandra Sanchez as Alisa, tenor Zachary Taylor as Normanno and bass Anthony Reed as Raimondo. The Pensacola Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Cody Martin, with director Dona D. Vaughn making her mainstage directorial debut with Pensacola Opera. Pensacola Opera’s 41st season will close with Johann Strauss II’s effervescent and always entertaining German operetta, Die Fledermaus. Gabriel von Eisenstein finds himself at Prince Orlofsky’s elaborate masquerade ball, along with his wife Rosalinde, their maid Adele and his friend, Dr. Falke. The catch? They’re all concealing their identities as part of an elaborate prank of light-hearted revenge. Just as things begin to unravel, all is revealed and the characters accept their bamboozlement, raising a toast to champagne’s delicious pleasures. With nonstop laughs from start to finish, Die Fledermaus has become one of the most wellknown and beloved German operettas of all time. Returning soprano Kara Shay Thomson stars as Rosalinde with baritone Daniel Belcher making his Pensacola Opera debut as Gabriel von Eisenstein. Also making their debuts are Christian Sanders as Alfred, studio artist soprano

While grand opera performances happen on the Saenger stage every season, a big part of Pensacola Opera’s mission is to bring opera outside the walls of the theater and into the community. Brown Bag Opera and Opera Al Fresco are two of these programs that offer opportunities to experience opera in a familiar, digestible setting at no cost.
Nicole Heinen as Adele and studio artist Bernardo Medeiros as Frank. The show also features studio artists, tenor Zachary Taylor as Dr. Blind, mezzo-soprano Alexandra Sanchez as Sally and Joe Tomko as Frosch. Leading the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra is Principal Guest Conductor, Jerome Shannon, with stage direction by John Hoomes of Nashville Opera. Pensacola Opera offers a variety of other ways to enhance the opera experience through numerous outreach events, annual fundraisers and other social events held throughout the year. Immediately following opening night performances, Pensacola Opera hosts a Meet the Artist Reception at the Saenger Theatre in the upstairs event room. This reception includes a catered meal, drinks and cocktails, desserts and also provides an opportunity to mix and mingle with the stars of the show. Prior to the Sunday matinee performances, opera patrons are invited to Jackson’s Steakhouse
Brown Bag Opera is a monthly recital series where the community is invited to spend their lunch hour with Pensacola Opera. Each month from September to March, the Jan Miller Studio Artists provide a free, 45-minute recital of favorite arias and musical theater pieces while you enjoy your lunch. Brown Bag Opera recitals will be held January 30, and February 20 at noon at the Pensacola Opera Center in downtown Pensacola.
