What made you pick up this issue?

Was it those chilled-out sandwich bros on the cover? I hope it was. We think they’re great.

We wanted to make this a fun issue, one that you could flip through on a lunch break and enjoy without too much thought.

We’re always highlighting new restaurants in these pages and got to thinking about all the different sandwiches you can find in and around downtown. We knew we wanted to do a personality quiz of sorts, and settled on sandwiches as a way to have some fun and highlight some of our favorite lunch spots. As you can see above I, according to our graphic designers, am a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I’m not sure what that means, but I’m learning to accept my new identity as the foundation of an elementary school lunch.

comes useless to readers who pick up this magazine afterward. We’ll never stop highlighting great events and goings-on, but going forward we hope to bring you more fun features that you can enjoy any time you pick up a copy of Downtown Crowd

We’ve also wanted for a while now to start featuring the work of local creators in Downtown Crowd. Pensacola is full of artists and designers doing awesome work. We so often shine a light on businesses and organizations, and felt like there was an opportunity being missed to highlight some of the work being done by independent creators. We wanted to fix that.

The challenge in publishing a monthly magazine like this is coming up with a mix of content that is both interesting and able sit on shelves for a whole month without becoming stale. There might be a great event going on, but if it happens on the first of the month, that content be-

To that end, we reached out this month to Jarrod Goldmann, a local artist who graciously agreed to illustrate our cover and the accompanying main feature. We think he did a great job. You’ll find a brief interview with Jarrod and some more examples of his work on page 17. We hope to make this a regular feature going forward.

As always, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy the issue. It’s a good one.

Angelena’s Italy on Intendencia

Angelena’s Ristorante Italiano will open at the corner of South Jefferson and Intendencia Streets in mid-May.

Helmed by executive chef and twotime “Chopped” winner James Briscione and marketing and wine director Brooke Parkhurst, Angelena’s promises to bring authentic Italian cuisine with a Gulf Coast flare to local palettes.

Briscione and Parkhurst relocated from New York City to open the new restaurant in Pensacola. They had planned to open September of 2018, but busy work schedules and construction delays pushed the opening to this month.

“I think construction always takes longer than you’re anticipating,” Parkhurst said. “Now it’s at a stage where we have all these beautiful furnishings and you just want to make it right, so we’re just busy making it as beautiful of a destination restaurant as we can.”

Parkhurst said the restaurant will offer dishes ranging from affordable, casu-

al bites like a $12 margherita pizza to fully gourmet creations like Briscione’s chianti-braised short ribs with salsa verde, all utilizing local ingredients and house-made pastas.

“We’re so excited to be able to serve all of Pensacola,” Parkhurst said. “It’s not just one tier of customer. It’s not a place where you might go to lunch twice a year. Italian is for any day and really approachable in every sense.”

Part of the Great Southern Restaurant Group whose other properties include The Fish House, Jackson’s Steakhouse and Five Sisters Blues Café, Angelena’s will be managed by Jean Pierre N’Dione, co-owner of Five Sisters.

Parkhurst is originally from Pensacola and said the idea of melding Briscione’s Italian roots with Pensacola’s local bounty of fresh seafood was the inspiration for the new restaurant.

“I think what was really important to and James at the very beginning was to make Angelena’s the Italian restaurant that could only exist on the

Gulf Coast and could really only exist in Pensacola,” she said. “We didn’t want to copy anything we’d seen in New York or even in Italy. We wanted to have classic cuisine like when you travel to Italy but then the coastal touches of being in Pensacola.”

As opening day approaches, the restaurateurs are looking forward to showing off what they’ve created, and answering fewer questions about when they’ll open.

“We’re just excited for people to fully experience it, not just read about it,

but to experience it,” Parkhurst said. “I really think people are going to love it. Pensacola we know is ready for a wonderful Italian restaurant.”

Angelena’s will start off serving dinner only, opening at 5 pm each day, seven days a week. The exception will be on Sunday when the restaurant will open at 3 pm and offer a “family meal,” a shared, multi-course meal offered at a flat rate for an entire table.

You can find Angelena’s on Instagram, Facebook and at their website AngelenasPensacola.com.

It’s taken longer than they had planned, but the husband and wife team behind downtown Pensacola’s next culinary experience are excited to open their doors this month.

movie magic Space Oddities

The Merrill Movie Museum is a private collection of more than 1,000 artifacts from movies and television ranging from pre-production concept art and business documents to finished production pieces used in the making of dozens of different films and television shows, and much more. Brothers Burney, Collier and Will Merrill have been collecting items for decades, and have now teamed with the T.T. Wentworth Jr. Museum to showcase some of their treasures.

Exhibit Brings Props, Posters & More to Wentworth Museum

“Space Oddities: Selections from the Merrill Movie Museum” is on display at the Wentworth through February, and focuses on items from science fiction films and television shows including the “Alien” and “Men in Black” franchises, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Serenity” and “Zathura,” as well as vintage sci-fi movie posters from the Merrill collection.

While the brothers — who are well known in the community as the owners of The Fish House, Jackson’s Steakhouse, Atlas Oyster House, Five Sisters Blues Cafe and the forthcoming Angelena’s — have occasionally shown items publicly, including displays to promote Pensacon and in an appearance on “American Pick-

ers,” for some time, the collection has been spread out across multiple locations, with much of it in boxes, making assembling any serious exhibit a challenge.

I was hired as curator of the collection in January 2018, and over time, united all of the items — which have been acquired from auctions, prop houses and private collectors, among other sources — into one space. Once all the items were under one roof, I was able to create a complete inventory and craft a private viewing space in which the scope of the collection was able to be absorbed for the first time.

Representatives of the University of West Florida Historic Trust were

among the first invited to view the private collection as it started to become presentable, and immediately recognized the potential in putting together an exciting public exhibit. Over the course of several visits, reviewing multiple items, a decision was made to create an exhibit that would focus on a few highly recognizable sci-fi properties, as well as looking back at some of the grand history of the movie posters of the genre’s golden age.

After careful discussion, the Historic Trust team selected some of the most historically significant and allaround coolest items in the Merrill Movie Museum collection for this exhibit. Among the highlights are:

From 2004’s “Alien vs. Predator,” a one-of-a-kind animatronic Predalien chestburster. Seen at the very end of the film emerging from a dead Predator, this was the only chestburster ever created that features the distinctive Predator mandibles. The Merrill Movie Museum kept

this piece under wraps for years before debuting it at this exhibit.

From 1992’s “Alien 3,” a full-scale animatronic Xenomorph bust. This piece, which was part of the prestigious Osiyana Archives before being acquired by the Merrills, is a good example of how Hollywood builds props to look good on screen during filming with no consideration to longevity. Some of the foam and fiberglass has deteriorated over the more than 25 years since its creation, which allows for a view of some of the mechanics of the creature’s jaw.

From 2002’s “Men in Black II,” a fullscale Worm Guy puppet built in the studios of the multiple Academy Award-winning special effects artist, Rick Baker. These comic-relief characters are known for their surly attitudes and wisecracks, and are returning to the big screen this summer in “Men in Black: International.”

From 2005’s big-screen adaptation of the classic “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to

the Galaxy,” animatronic heads from two Vogons, the alien antagonists of the film. These beautifully detailed, gigantic creatures were among the final creations of the legendary Jim Henson’s original Creature Shop.

An original 1976 poster that marked the first image displayed to the public of “Star Wars.” Featuring artwork by Howard Chaykin, the poster was created to promote Marvel Comics’ adaptation of the film, and was debuted at San Diego Comic Con, where the film was first announced to the public. Very few of these posters were printed and fewer still have survived.

We are excited to be able to share a small portion of the Merrill Movie Collection with the world via this exhibit. To learn more about the collection, visit www.facebook.com/ merrillmoviemuseum, follow @merrillmovies on Twitter, and follow @ merrillmoviemuseum on Instagram.

A NEW WATERFRONT

Landscape architecture firm SCAPE was hired by the Center for Civic Engagement to study Pensacola’s waterfront and propose improvements to make it more walkable, vibrant and connected.

PROJECT GOALS

• Create a more connected public realm.

• Highlight and celebrate local ecology.

• Leverage opportunities for economic development.

• Promote equity and inlcusion in public space.

• A new model for outreach and civic engagement.

• Identify actionable and implementable projects.

The plan calls for extending Cedar Street to connect the Port Royal area with Maritime Park.

PENSACOLA WATERFONT FRAMEWORK PLAN

SCAPE presented its initial findings in late April. The firm suggested that the city focus in the short term on improvements to Bruce Beach and a “hashtag” of roadways formed by Palafox, Jefferson, Main and Cedar streets.

Long-term improvements could include a continuous walking path connecting the whole wonterfront, an education hub, a marina marketplace and even floating pools.

what kind of are you?

When you think about it, sandwhiches are a lot like people. Soft or crusty exteriors. Simple or complex insides. Sweet. Spicy. Rich. Bland. Big. Small. Hot. Cold. A multifarious amalgamation of ingredients combine to create a singular whole. That’s true of a sandwich and of ourselves. And like people, sandwhiches – especially these days – are diverse. There exists many a fine grinder, hoagie, poboy, slider and dog in Downtown Pensacola, each as

varied and unique as the last. Each has its own set of defining characteristics that sets it apart from the crowd – it’s own personality, if you will. So, on the premise that our carefully crafted identities are bascially analagous to a chicken parm, we present this guide to help you identify yourself and your friends as the downtown sandwiches that you really are. 5 QUESTIONS WITH

JARROD GOLDMANN CREATIVES

What is the type of art you do?

I always call it isometric art. Isometric is the type of perspective it is.

Is this typically the art that you do?

Lately, I guess for the past few years. I went to school for figurative work, doing portraits and stuff, but I got burned out on it after school. I wanted to do something imaginative and out of my head.

Where does your inspiration come from? What influences you most?

A lot of the video games I like, a lot of video game art.

A lot of your art has a lot of detail on it. Why do you put in so much detail?

I think that has to do with when I was younger, I didn’t have glasses for a very long time. Nobody really knew

that I needed them, I mean I didn’t, I was just a little kid. So I would draw really small. It was sort of like my favorite thing to do, just sit by myself and draw. It carried over from that. It’s really small details because I’m working so small and I like to fill the whole page. I have a hard time with things that are a little more subtle or sparse.

What imagery do you do most often?

I do a lot of science-fiction blend. I read a lot of comics and I play a lot of video games, so it comes from that. I really like industrial designs, with a lot of factories and mechanical engineering stuff.

What we’re listening to this month Jams

Cage to Rattle Daughtry

RCA Records

Somehow I missed Daughtry’s fifth studio album, which released back in July, but I am so happy to say that the music is still rocking and rolling. After five albums, you’d think that an artist’s music might start to get stale, but not so, especially since this album sees Daughtry returning with a full band at his back. Now, instead of relying heavily on electronic mixes for his songs, there is a fair mix of electronics and the heavy beats of drums, bass and guitar to accompany his classic rock voice. Between the ballad “Just Found Heaven” and the beatheavy “Bad Habits” (drop whatever you are doing and listen to this song, immediately), it’s everything you want from a new Daughtry album.

Aftermath/12 Tone Music

YES LAWD! Andy is back to bless us with the proper summertime jams album that we deserve. .Paak is back on track after the stylistic misteps of the Oxnard album, delivering a nostalgic love letter to 70s funk and soul.

This album’s guest features aren’t as plentiful as Oxnard’s , but definetly stand out and help elevate the tracks. Anderson’s voice is accompanied by the one and only Smokey Robinson on the track “Make it Better,” and André 3000 does the heavy lifting on “Come Home” delivering a great verse. Brandy? yeah, shes still around and sounds great on “Jet Black.” We event get Nate Dogg returning from the grave on album closer “What Can We Do?”

Ventura is a front-to-back consistent album, full of sweet, light-hearted melodies and funky rythyms that show why Anderson .Paak is one of the best and

brightest in Hip Hop and R&B today. Put this one in heavy rotation for your summer escapades.

Standout Tracks

King James Come Home (feat. André 3000) Make it Better (feat. Smokey Robinson)

Ribbons

Bibio

Warp Records

Over the past two decades of his recording career, Stephen Wilkinson has proven to be a musical chameleon. Under his stage name Bibio, Wilkinson has blended acoustic folk with hip-hop beats and field recordings, explored atmospheric drones and, on 2009’s Ambilence Avenue, produced some of the best indie-pop-funk-beat weirdness of the last decade. Wilksinon’s new album, Ribbons, is a return to his roots as an exceptionally skilled acoustic player. Wilkinson employs an arsenal of stringed instruments including guitars, mandolins, violin, harp and banjo to produce his folkiest, most strippeddown album yet. This is no collection of Americana standards, however.

The End Shlohmo

FRIENDS OF FRIENDS / WEDIDIT

For a guy who’s probably best known for providing the backing to some of R&B crooner Jeremih’s best sensual jams, L.A. producer Shlohmo has always had a knack for the weird and experimental. His latest solo album, The End, finds the artist exploring the extremes of atmospheric electronica. Shlohmo has described the album as being, “vaguely about the end of the world, but from the viewpoint of smoking on the couch during the extinction event. Reading a nice book while the meteor hits.” How that translates to the grainy textures and drones on this hour-long collection of 13 tracks is unclear, but the result is an enjoyable, albeit challenging experience for adventurous listeners.

The musical ideas captured here are unmistakably those of an artist at peace with himself and confident of his unique talent.
