The Lost Key
Perdido Key visitors enjoy miles of shoreline that are remarkably similar to the beautiful “Lost Key” that Don Siguenza landed upon 320 years ago. Centuries before it was the Florida-Alabama state line, a stretch of land on Perdido Key Drive was a body of water that offered safe passage from the Gulf of Mexico to calmer seas inland. It was 1693, when Don Carlos Siguenza’s ship was blown off course and in trouble, that a friendly Indian chief spotted the Spanish vessel and guided it to the pass. This was how Siguenza, a cartographer and scientist, found Perdido Key, Spanish for “Lost Island.”
Early developers tried with limited success to develop the Key, Sunny David wrote in her 2009 book, A History of Perdido Bay and Perdido Key. In the late 1700s, the Spanish gave land to families who were good farmers—and Catholic. In the early 1800s, Scottish merchant John Innerarity came to the area and was able to keep peace between the white settlers and the Indians, in part due to his extraordinary knowledge of nine languages. A 1925 brochure listed 10 acres of waterfront property, home included, for $32,000. Around that time, it was recorded that for $721, Ralph “Stubby” Wilson bought waterfront property on Perdido Bay and an overcoat (which he threw into the bargain because he vowed to never go north again). In World War II, the U.S. Navy trained troops at a gunnery range on part of what is now Lost Key Golf Course; in the 1950s, the government reportedly auctioned off the land for as little as $3,000 an acre.
Siguenza wasn’t the first Spaniard to reach the area. In 1559, Don Tristan de Luna set up camp at nearby Pensacola Beach, only to leave two years later when a hurricane battered his ships and his settlement.
Many people realized the need to preserve as much of the Key’s natural state as possible. Government agencies bought large tracts of land for beaches and parks that are open to anyone, thus distinguishing Perdido Key from many other beaches.
Over time, Perdido Key evolved beautifully. Nature and development pushed the pass three miles west to its present “Perdido Pass” location, but much of the barrier island remains like it was a thousand years ago, when artifacts indicate Indians settled on the Key.
Today, Perdido Key visitors enjoy miles of shoreline that are remarkably similar to the beautiful “Lost Key” that Don Siguenza landed upon 320 years ago.
Perdido Key was soon discovered by sun-seeking travelers, but it was set apart by its out-of-the-way location and the nature parks which preserve more than half of the 16-mile-long island for public use.

Off the Beaten Path
Discover a different side of the Key— nature at its most entrancing. On Perdido Key, you’ll discover nature at its most beautiful—a world of nature trails, endangered birds, marine life and 16 breathtaking miles of dazzling white coastline. The pristine island is surrounded by a state park system that was voted “Best in America,” for its federal parks, hiking trails and iconic wildlife. Here, your outdoor excursions may range from an easy day trip to an extended nature weekend of campfires, stargazing and nighttime discovery. More than 60 percent of the Key is preserved for public use, giving nature lovers the year-round opportunity to explore wildlife refuges, natural wetlands, sanctuaries and nature parks. The Key is a renowned habitat for nesting birds, newly-hatched sea turtles, butterflies, dolphins, rays, and more, and many species are endangered and protected under federal law. Several sites in Perdido Key are listed on Florida’s Great Birding and Wildlife Trail (FGBWT)—a 2,000-mile, self-guided trail encompassing 500 sites—including one of the FGBWT’s premier Gateway sites, Big Lagoon State Park. Covering 655 acres, the spectacular park separates Perdido Key from the mainland and beckons visitors to camp, swim, fish, boat, canoe, and hike, or to try crabbing in the shallow waters of Big Lagoon (also a great wading spot for toddlers). Climb the three-stories-high observation tower there and watch for dolphins, but stop by the ranger station first–binoculars are available for loan there.
Perdido Key Area Nature & Walking Trails Big Lagoon State Park (12301 Gulf Beach Highway) • Sand Pine Trail is 3.5 miles long and traverses flatwoods, wetlands and rare scrub habitats. • Estuary Trail is two miles long and traverses wetlands, scrub and coastal habitats. Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park (Bauer Road between Sorrento Road and Lillian Highway) • Tarkiln Bayou Trail is a 1½ -mile round-trip, paved/ boardwalk trail that winds through communities of long leaf pine, titi and cypress and ends at an viewing area that overlooks the bayou. Fully accessible for persons with disabilities. • Perdido Bay Trail is 6½ miles long and winds through communities of long leaf pine, oak, mixed hardwoods and wet prairie. • Wet Prairie Trail is 2½ miles long and winds through a wet prairie ecosystem. Gulf Islands National Seashore (Johnson Beach Road off Florida Route 292) • Gulf Islands National Seashore is home to a popular boardwalk trail that starts at Florida Route 292, southwest from Pensacola; turn east on Johnson Beach Road. • Johnson Beach Discovery Nature Trail is a nice hike (just under ½ mile) over a raised boardwalk through dunes, pine trees and salt marsh outlooks leading to a beautiful view of Grand Lagoon.

More than 60 percent of Perdido Key’s 16 miles is set aside as protected land. The sand on Rosamond Johnson Beach, on Gulf Islands National Seashore, is considered some of the whitest in the world, and the park is equipped with everything you’ll need for a memorable family picnic, including restrooms, concession stands and shady pavilions. Follow the seashore’s winding trails and you’re likely to spot blue crabs, brown pelicans, raccoons and turtle nests, to mention just a few of the natural inhabitants. The trails are pedestrian-friendly, but seldom crowded. Johnson Beach is also where you can pick up some of the best seashells in the area. The Perdido Key Blueway paddling trail opened in late 2012 as a new segment of Florida’s 1,515-mile Blueway Trail. From its launch site on Johnson Beach, the local trail runs 5½ miles along the south shore of Big Lagoon and ends at Fort McRee’s Battery 233. The panoramic Tarkiln Bayou Preserve spans approximately 4,200 acres of protected rare and endangered plants. The Tarkiln Bayou Trail is a 1.3 mile (round trip) elevated trail on sidewalk and boardwalk and is stroller/wheelchair accessible. The trail leads you through several ecosystems including pine flatwoods, wet prairie, and pitcher plant habitats, and ends at a scenic overlook on undeveloped Tarkiln Bayou, where you may spot mullet jumping out of the water.

Did You Know? Tarkiln Bayou State Park is home to four species of endangered pitcher plants, as well as other rare and endangered plant species. The rare, carnivorous, white-top pitcher plant is unique to the Gulf Coast and found only between the Apalachicola and Mississippi rivers. Almost 100 other rare plants and animals depend on the wet habitat.
Playing with Water
No matter where you go on Perdido Key, you’ll find water to enjoy. Perdido Key is surrounded by water, so no matter where you turn, you’ll find a spot to surf, swim, paddle, fish, ride or float. Launches for canoes and kayaks offer the opportunity to explore a tantalizing network of waterways. And if you haven’t tried standup paddle boarding, the calm waters of Big Lagoon are a perfect training ground for beginners. If you can handle a boat on your own, rent a sailboat or motorboat and roam the Gulf of Mexico. Pack plenty of food and drinks and you can fish all day, snorkel and dive, or spend the day riding the water—many times, a school of dolphins will keep you company. And if you’d rather let someone else do the navigating, there are fully-equipped charter boats with expert crews ready to take you out. If you’re craving a more extreme water adventure, jet skis, banana boats, kite boards, sea trampolines and parasailing boats are available for hourly and daily rental, with instructors ready to show you the ropes. And back on shore, there’s surfing, boogie boarding and wakeboarding. While you’re here, embark on a dolphin cruise for the chance to experience some of nature’s most playful and curious mammals, or a sunset cruise, arguably the most unforgettable way to enjoy a glorious Gulf Coast sunset. No matter where you go on the Key, there’s an adventure on the water to enjoy, experiences only limited by the time you have to spend here.

Located at the Florida-Alabama line, Happy Harbor on the Line has a sports bar, outdoor tiki bar, boat dock and waterfront dining. It also has, some say— and there’s surveillance video that seems to show it!—a ghostly female resident who knocks over chairs and flies through the building after midnight! (happyharbors.com/FloridaLine.php) As the sun begins to descend over the edge of the Gulf of Mexico, climb aboard the 53-foot catamaran Wild Hearts for a spectacular sunset cruise. The able staff of the U.S. Coast Guard-certified boat leaves the itinerary to chance and mystery, sailing “wherever the wind takes us….” Ninety-minute cruises depart from Perdido Beach Resort’s Soundside Pier, casting off at times that vary by sunset. (sailwildhearts.com) After darkness falls, head over to Pensacola Lighthouse to brave the Ghost Hunt Tour … if you dare. Is the lighthouse haunted? The Travel Channel and SciFi’s “Ghost Hunters” think so—in fact, it’s been called one of the most haunted lighthouses in America! (Ghost Hunt tour not recommended for young children). For families with kids, bring them to the (family-friendly) Light of the Moon Tour, where your guide will show you the historic 1869 keepers’ quarters and share historic (and a few more recent) tales of ghostly encounters. Both tours include a climb up the 177 cast iron steps of the 1859 tower and a breathtaking moonlit view of the Gulf of Mexico and Pensacola Bay. (pensacolalighthouse.org) During the summer months, explore the mysterious night sky over the Gulf of Mexico during Stargazing at Big Lagoon led by the Escambia Amateur Astronomers’ Association. There you can view the wonders of Jupiter, the Milky Way and other galaxies on telescopes that range in strength and size from duplicates of Galileo’s original telescope to today’s powerful, large-scope devices. (eaaa.net) At certain times of year, the nighttime beaches of Perdido Key experience eerie, glowing waves that light up like neon glow sticks when they splash to the shore. What could be causing such
an otherworldly phenomenon? Microscopic animals living in the ocean produce light when disturbed, creating what’s known as ocean phosphorescence. Swish your arm through the water or kick the waves under the right conditions and you’ll be rewarded with thousands of tiny sparkles of bluish-green light. In motion, your arm or foot will literally glow. Watch Perdido Key beaches closely and quietly at night and you might spot a strange apparition—a Ghost crab running on the sand in the dark, aptly named because of its ability to blend into the white beaches and sand dunes. These ghosts are fast! Six strong legs are capable of carrying Ghost crabs along at speeds up to 10 mph, allowing them to disappear from sight quickly (yet another reason for the name). Their two black eyes are able to see 360 degrees simultaneously.
Uniquely Local
Here are a few uniquely-Perdido activities that you may not be aware of, to make your beach vacation on the Key even more unforgettable.
Unusual house of worship
Seafood and bluegrass
A hard act to follow
For one hour every Sunday, the Flora-Bama bar hosts Worship at the Water, an outreach of the Perdido Bay United Methodist Church. There you’ll find hundreds (up to a thousand on Easter) of casually dressed people of all ages enjoying music and fellowship at the iconic roadhouse bar overlooking the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. Service begins at 11 a.m.
Like many Perdido Key restaurants, The Original Point Restaurant (point-restaurant. com) serves only local fresh seafood. But at “The Point,” you’ll get a musical bonus while you’re there—Bubba and Them, a lively bluegrass band that plays at The Point every weekend.
If you love theatre, you’re in for a unique theatre experience. Sanctuary in the Groves (sanctuarytheatrewest.com) is set in a restored old church with a mission “…to learn, experience, and celebrate the joys of quality theatre.” It’s located about one mile from Pensacola Naval Air Station.
The past comes alive
The world’s best picnic
Unique mess hall
You’ll find Native American artifacts, historic weapons and hand-crafted treasures at Native Paths Cultural Heritage Museum (850-453-7382) located on the Jones Swamp Preserve. While you’re there, you might get the chance to meet members of the Perdido Bay Tribe of Poarch Creek Indians, or watch as rescued and recovered animals are released into the wild. Tue-Sat, 9am-5pm. Free admission.
Seafood lovers—you already know that Perdido Key restaurants serve some of the best in the world. But if you’d like to try something different, call Perdido Key Seafood (850-492-0455). Give them a heads-up and they’ll steam and season fresh-off-the-boat shrimp or crab legs and have them waiting when you arrive.
The Cubi Bar Café inside the National Museum of Naval Aviation was reconstructed using historic memorabilia, plaques and emblems from the Officers’ Club at Subic Bay, Philippines. Gourmet sandwiches, salads and soups served daily from 10:30am-3:30pm. (850-452-2643).

Military History and Heritage Rosamond Johnson Beach – Gulf Islands National Seashore Army private Rosamond Johnson, Jr., was the first resident of Escambia County, Fla., to die in the Korean War. During a skirmish on July 26, 1950, Johnson carried two wounded soldiers to safety and was returning with a third when he was fatally wounded. At the time of Johnson’s death, local beaches were racially segregated, and this particular beach was a popular area for African Americans. After the Korean Conflict ended, the beach was named Rosamond Johnson Beach. Only 17 years old when he died, Private Johnson was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart on August 21, 1950. Fort McRee – Underwater Site Constructed during 1834-39, Fort McRee stood at the east end of Perdido Key at the entrance to Pensacola Bay. Devised by U.S. engineers to defend Pensacola Bay when Florida transferred from Spain to the United States, the fort was seized by Southern militia in 1861 as Florida seceded from the Union. Fort McRee withstood the Civil War only to be obliterated by a 1906 hurricane, during which soldiers latched themselves to cannons to keep from being washed away. Today, the fort is only accessible by boat or on foot…a several mile trek. Veterans Memorial Park – Downtown Pensacola With such strong ties to the military, it’s only fitting that the City of Pensacola has a waterfront park honoring U.S. veterans. Veterans Memorial Park is a 5.5-acre park in downtown Pensacola, which includes a number of memorials to American armed forces personnel. Dedicated in 1992, the park’s first memorial was The Wall South, the nation’s only permanent replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. A Korean War Memorial was dedicated in 2007. In addition, there are World War I and World War II memorials, a Vietnam-era helicopter and a new Marine Aviation Memorial Tower.

Extreme Perdido Key You say you crave adventure? Adventure reigns on Perdido Key, where there’s an alluring mix of breathtaking scenery, pristine biodiversity and a variety of exhilarating, muscle-powered activities. You could be parasailing, body surfing, hiking, biking, sky-diving, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking or jet skiing—or any combination of these high-action adventures! If the getaway of your dreams includes the rush of adrenaline, there’s no better sport than parasailing over the Key. Where else can you watch dolphins, fish and manta rays chasing each other under the clear, blue-green Gulf water, all from 400 to 800 feet in the air? Don’t forget your camera, because the view from here is incredible. If you’re the type who’s never satisfied with lazing away your vacation days, kite boarding is a one-of-a-kind adventure you’ll love, and it’s just what it sounds like—navigating a surfboard across the waves, propelled by an attached kite or sail. This sport isn’t for the weak of heart, though: experts have been known to kite board at more than 35 miles per hour! For a different kind of wave-hopping experience, jet skis are available for rent on the Key, and just like other watercraft here, they come with experienced teams of instructors to help you get started. Hop on a jet ski and explore the world around the Key from the seat of a vehicle that will let you race over the open sea or just cruise along the shoreline. Looking for something a little different? Pack up your more adventurous friends and family and climb aboard a banana boat. These inflatable vessels hold up to six people and bounce and glide briskly through the water, pulled by a jet ski that is steered by an expert pilot. Banana boats are generally safe to ride at 4+ years, but check with the rental company for age and safety requirements! Kids and adults alike love seaborne trampolines, inflatable water bouncers that are perfect for burning off lots of energy flipping and jumping. Remember, you will be splashing down in the Gulf, the softest, wettest landing pad imaginable. Snorkelers, there are unforgettably close encounters with Perdido Key’s marine life beneath the water’s surface in the Gulf of Mexico and in the state and federal parks on the Key, where you can spot everything from live sand dollars and hermit crabs to fish, turtles and rays. And a dolphin cruise through the waters of the Gulf will give you a breathtaking encounter with some of nature’s most playful mammals.

ShipWrecked Near Perdido Key are a number of great underwater destinations, including five on Florida’s Panhandle Shipwreck Trail. The shipwrecks draw a wide range of marine life and pose varying degrees of difficulty for divers. The most memorable is the USS Oriskany, a former aircraft carrier now more than 200 feet underwater. Also dive aboard the deck of one of the nation’s oldest battleships, the USS Massachusetts.
Explore the Panhandle Shipwreck Trail There’s a new experience for divers visiting Florida’s Gulf Coast. If you’re on the Key, you’re in close proximity to five spectacular underwater destinations, including the world’s largest artificial reef, a sunken barge and a fruit freighter. They’re all part of Florida’s new Panhandle Shipwreck Trail that links 12 shipwrecks scattered between Pensacola to Port St. Joe. In the Perdido Key / Pensacola Bay area, you can explore: • YDT-14, a veteran U.S. Navy dive tender sunk in 2000 at a depth of 90-100 feet. • San Pablo, an international fruit freighter that was destroyed during World War II by a top-secret U.S. military operation testing an experimental weapon system. • The oilfield supply vessel Pete Tide II, which became an artificial reef in 1993 and offers three decks of superstructure to explore. • Three coal barges sunk in 1974, which offer a great location in shallow water. • The world’s largest artificial reef, the famous USS Oriskany, sunk in 2006 after serving in the Pacific Ocean.

Family Getaways
If your perfect family vacation is a beach getaway with sun-filled days and mild, breezy nights, then Perdido Key is your destination.
Inside the National Naval Aviation Museum there are biplanes of the Great War, record-setters, experimental platforms and survivors of epic aerial battles. It’s the world’s largest naval aviation museum and one of the most visited museums in the state of Florida. You’ll see 150 aircraft, including some piloted by the very same men leading the tours. Also inside, Hangar Bay One showcases aircraft from the post World War II era, thrilling new flight simulators and daily IMAX® movies.
On our uncrowded island, there are miles and miles of white-sand beaches lining the Gulf of Mexico, surrounded by pristine nature parks, trails, rivers, inlets and playgrounds, all open to the public.
At Native Paths Cultural & Heritage Center, the explorers in your family can meet members of the Perdido Bay Tribe of Poarch Creek Indians, investigate hundreds of Indian artifacts and art, and discover wildlife along the paths leading through Jones Swamp Wetland Preserve.
An ideal day on the Key includes choosing a beach spot for the family to explore and then kicking back. The island’s relatively mild year-round weather—daytime winter highs average 64º F and summer highs range between 80º to 90º F—make it a top spot for families, especially for those looking for a quick, easy getaway. If your family requires activity and stimulation, you won’t be disappointed. There’s parasailing and hang-gliding, snorkeling, scuba diving, jet skiing and dolphin cruises. You can take surfing lessons, watch the Blue Angels practice overhead, climb the Pensacola Lighthouse, said to be haunted, and explore Fort Barrancas and its history dating back to the 1800s.
Big Lagoon State Park is a family favorite, where kids can rent a canoe or kayak, or hike the trails in search of native plants and animals. A three-story observation tower there is ready for climbing. At Tarkiln Bayou State Park, you can check out the rare pitcher plants that grow there—these curious carnivores actually trap their prey! Families come to Perdido Key for generations. It’s a laid-back experience here; you won’t find pre-packaged or cookie-cutter vacations on the Key. What you will find is a place that your kids will love so much, they’ll want to bring their own kids back to visit.
Indoors or outdoors, Perdido Key delivers the perfect family package for you. 30 PERDIDO KEY VISITORS GUIDE

National Flight Academy It’s the best next-gen game on the planet, combining world-class technology and the wonder of flight. The National Flight Academy aboard Pensacola Naval Air Station teaches the principles of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) using an immersive, hands-on approach that reaches far beyond the traditional school experience. A sailboat capsizes in the Gulf of Mexico just as a hurricane is approaching. Who will rescue the sailors and how will they do it? That’s an example of the hypothetical challenges facing young people at the National Flight Academy, which offers five-day and three-day overnight camps for middle-school and high-school students. The camp is held aboard the Ambition, a simulated aircraft carrier, in a program designed to make learning exciting. It’s a great place for parents to leave their children for a safe, fun experience while mom and dad enjoy themselves on Perdido Key.

Here are some ways you can help protect sea turtles on the Key: • Boaters, always watch the Gulf and bays for sea turtles. • Don’t throw plastics or trash in the water or on the beach. •
Beach residents are required to use turtle-friendly lights. Other residents and businesses are encouraged to switch to low-pressure, sodium lights. For details, call (850) 934-2600.
•
If you find an injured sea turtle or sea turtle nest, call the Escambia County Marine Resources at (850) 595-3474.
Between May and September, female sea turtles lay their eggs on the beaches of Perdido Key. When they hatch some 60 days later, hundreds of baby sea turtles will crawl across the beach and head out to sea. Volunteers from all over the country help to protect the fragile sea turtle nests on the Key throughout the nesting season. Birds, raccoons and fish are just a few of the predators these vulnerable creatures face; some experts say only one out of a thousand will survive to adulthood under natural conditions. Perdido Key is home to four endangered species of sea turtles, and federal protection laws are enforced here. Loggerhead, Leatherback, Ridley and Green sea turtles dig nest cavities in the sand and lay 100 or more eggs before returning to the sea. About two months later—provided the nest hasn’t been destroyed by nature or disturbed by predators or beach visitors—turtle hatchlings will pop out of the sand. Under a bright moon and starlit sky, and with the help of turtle volunteers and the national parks service rangers, these fragile baby creatures will be guided to the Gulf.
• Remember: Sea turtles are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act. PERDIDO KEY VISITORS GUIDE

Cultural Side Trips Explore the historic side of the City of Five Flags Dig into the historic past of Pensacola, known as the City of Five Flags because it has been a part of five nations. At tree-shaded Seville Square, you’ll find Pensacola Historic Village, which captures life at various periods since Don Tristan de Luna first sailed here in 1559. One of the village’s many attractions is the T.T. Wentworth Jr. Florida State Museum, an architectural marvel that houses a virtual treasure trove of historic artifacts, Americana and West Florida history. On a 45-minute walking tour of part of the Pensacola Historic District, guides will showcase historic structures with significant architecture and local history. The Barkley House, for example, was built about 1825, making it Pensacola’s oldest surviving example of a high-house–and it’s still in use. Visitors will catch a glimpse of Pensacola during the American Territorial Period and enjoy the vista of Pensacola Bay from this unique home. Look for two floors of hands-on fun at the Pensacola Children’s Museum. On the first floor, designed for those up to 9 years old, children can visit the Panton Trading Post, the Lavalle Cottage, the Fort, the Native American Village and the Kiddie Corral, or sail away on the Galveston. The second floor houses historical artifacts geared to older children and adults, but it also offers a train set, building blocks and dress-up clothes for the younger ages, as well. Soak up the sounds of local musicians and the aromas of local cuisine as the energy of the evening carries you from venue to venue. (downtownpensacola.com)
Dream Wedding in Paradise
Imagine saying “I do” in an exotic setting, where white quartz sand and turquoise water are your backdrop. Weddings on the Key are truly magical, and whether you dream of a traditional wedding or something more casual and simple, Perdido Key has all the ingredients for the wedding of a lifetime—regardless of your style or budget. For something different, consider tying the knot under the spectacular open-air outdoor amphitheatre at Big Lagoon State Park, surrounded by tropical vegetation and pristine marshlands. (12301 Gulf Beach Hwy., floridastateparks.org/biglagoon). Or recite your vows at sunset on the sugar-white sand of the island and let the Gulf of Mexico provide the background music. Then again, you may want to book a quaint local church or engage a private venue. Whatever your preference, you’ll find the destination wedding of your dreams on the Key, where you can blend the ceremony and the honeymoon with no additional travel time. Explore and play during the day, dine in a different restaurant every night and start your new life together at a destination you’ll want to come back to year after year. Whether you’re planning a small, intimate ceremony or a large gathering of guests, there are a number of options for creating the beach wedding of your dreams. Here are some tips to help you get started.
5 Tips for Tying the Knot on the Key 1. Scout your destination and secure your venues and local suppliers like caterers, florists and wedding photographers. 2.
Hire a local event planner to help you organize your wedding, dinners and activities for your guests. Golf, dolphin cruises, museums and other things to do will ensure your guests have an unforgettable experience, too.
3.
Make sure you have the proper permit, if needed. For weddings held on National Park beaches, you’ll need a $50 Special Use Permit, available from the National Park Service at 850-934-2620. (However, in Perdido Key, no permit is needed when you use State Parks or public beaches).
4.
Don’t forget the wedding license! Florida residents have a three-day waiting period. There is no waiting period for non-Florida residents. Bring a photo ID that shows your birth date and social security number. Cost of the marriage license is approximately $93.50.
5.
Consider the climate when choosing your wedding dress. Perdido Key has an average temperature of 75 degrees and 343 days of sunshine a year, so be sure to dress for a stress-free wedding day.

Island Survival Guide Beach Travel Tips Sunburn–
Prevent at all costs! Spend a few minutes in the sun each day, increasing the time daily, or start out with sunscreen with the highest protection and work your way down. UV rays are the strongest between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm. Sweat and water tend to wash off most sunscreens, so remember to reapply. And don’t forget, you can still get sunburned even when it’s cloudy outside.
Dehydration–
This can be a serious problem when it gets really hot outside. Drink plenty of liquids—water, juice, Gatorade-type drinks are best. Beer and Bushwhackers don’t count.
Undertow and Washouts–
Be aware of tides, currents and washouts. If you are caught in a rip current, don’t panic. Swim with the current diagonally or parallel to the beach until you can swim toward the shore without struggling.
Flotation–
Always wear life vests when boating, parasailing and jet skiing.
Flags–
Be aware of beach warning flags and what each means. Absence of flags does not assure safe waters*. * La Ausencia de Banderas No Asegura Aguas Seguras

Sports Fanatics
The southeast is well-known for its sports, but when you vacation on Perdido Key, you can take in great sporting action and spend your down-time on the world’s most beautiful beaches.
Golf legends Jack Nicklaus, Payne Stewart, Tom Kite and Curtis Strange have all played at Perdido Bay Golf Club (One Doug Ford Drive), once nominated for “Best New Public Course” by Golf Digest. The premier championship golf course was the site of the Pensacola Open for 10 years. Redesigned by the Arnold Palmer Design Group in 2006, Lost Key Golf Club (625 Lost Key Drive) is a par-71 signature designed championship course at Lost Key Golf Club and holds the distinction of being the first golf course in the state of Florida to be certified as an Audubon International Silver Signature Sanctuary.
On the Key and close by, sports-lovers will find everything from deep sea fishing tournaments to ice hockey to minor league baseball to NASCAR racing. Then there’s golf, rock climbing, zip lining, tennis, skateboarding, beach volleyball, kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, hiking and horseback riding, as well. Make sure your Perdido Key vacation game plan includes some of these great plays.
Two free tennis courts located on the Key (Avon Road) are joined by a large park and children’s playground. And if you like skateboarding there’s also a skateboard park on the Key (Innerarity Point Road).
Depending on the season, you can catch baseball, football, soccer or softball games at the newly-opened Southwest Escambia Sports Complex. Encompassing nearly 200 acres, the complex has lighted baseball, softball, soccer and football fields, an open play area, walking trails, playground and covered pavilions (2020 Bauer Road). The Perdido Key Blueway paddling trail is a new link on Florida’s 1,515-mile Blueway Trail. The local segment traverses 5½ miles along the south shore of Big Lagoon and ends at Fort McRee’s Battery 233. Florida’s longest sea kayaking trail, the Blueway Trail starts at Johnson Beach on the Key and winds around the entire perimeter of Florida’s peninsula and the Keys, ending at Fort Clinch State Park near the Georgia state line. (Launch site: Johnson Beach in Perdido Key on the Intracoastal Waterway).
Fishermen and women, Perdido Key has plenty of offshore and onshore fishing opportunities—and plenty of tournaments if you like competition. The barrier island provides some of the best fishing any angler could ask for—salt water or fresh water, trolling for cobia, fly fishing or chasing mullet. Fish from the beaches, from the pier or even in pristine Big Lagoon State Park. For those fishermen wishing to head out on the high seas, be sure to check out all the charter fishing options. Let the captains tend to the details while you enjoy the Gulf, home to numerous artificial reefs that draw all sorts of marine life. Or you can keep it simple; let a kayak or canoe carry you to your own fishing grounds. In nearby Pensacola, fans love watching veteran drivers and rising stars compete in the annual Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway (7451 Pine Forest Road), which brings the stock-car racing season to an exciting end each year.

End your day with the mouth-watering Coconut Shrimp at Legends Premium Wine Bar & Grille located at Perdido Bay Golf Club.
Geocaching on the Key Did you know? Geocaching is a free, real-world outdoor treasure hunt. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using their smart phone, GPS and other navigational techniques to hide and find containers anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container with a logbook into which the geocacher enters the date they found it and then signs it with their established code name. Larger containers, such as plastic storage containers, can also hold items for trading, usually toys, mementos or trinkets. Geocaching was first played in 2000, and as of January 1, 2013, there were 15 geocache locations on Perdido Key. (geocaching.com)
On Angels’ Wings
The sight amazes first-time visitors to Perdido Key: Fighter jets performing in tight formation over the Gulf of Mexico at more than 700 miles an hour. For locals, the sight is familiar—but it’s breathtaking nonetheless. Thousands watch the Blue Angels’ weekly practices during show season and eagerly await the free air shows over Pensacola Beach every July and at Pensacola NAS every November. The Blue Angels were created after World War II to remind people of the value of Naval and Marine Corps aviation and to encourage military enlistment. The flight team’s popularity continued to climb over the years and the team, based in Pensacola since 1954, has performed for hundreds of millions of spectators. The sleek FA-18 jets slice gracefully through the air during performances, but for many spectators, the favorite aircraft is Fat Albert, the C-130 which carries the Blue Angels’ cargo and plays a part in each show. Marines, who make up Fat Albert’s crew gave the aircraft its name many years ago. Pilots who want to join the Blues must have at least 1,250 flight hours under their helmets. Good thing, because the aircraft are a mere 18 inches apart during one maneuver known as the Diamond 360! The Blue Angels’ 2013 schedule includes air shows at Pensacola Beach July 13 and the annual season finale, a pair of shows Nov. 2-3 at Pensacola Naval Air Station.

Between March 20 and Oct. 29 (subject to weather or other circumstances), you can watch the Blue Angels performing practice air shows over Pensacola NAS beginning at 8:30 a.m. After most Wednesday practices, the pilots sign autographs for spectators inside the nearby National Museum of National Aviation. Admission to the Blue Angel practices and autograph sessions is The highest maneuver free1. and open to the public. in a Blue Angels air show is the vertical roll performed as high as 15,000 feet. The lowest maneuver is the Sneak Pass, performed at a ground- skimming 50 feet. 2. The F/A-18 Hornet weighs about 24,500 pounds and costs more than $20 million. 3.
Streams of “smoke” are produced when biodegradable, paraffin-based oil is pumped into the exhaust nozzles of the aircraft, where it is instantly vaporized. The smoke provides a traceable path for spectators to follow and enhances flight safety by providing a way for solo pilots to see each other during maneuvers.
4. The Blue Angels is the second oldest formal flying aerobatic team (flying under the same name) in the world, after the French Patrouille de France formed in 1931. 5.
The original team was christened the Blue Angels in 1946, when one of the pilots came across the name of New York City’s Blue Angel Nightclub in The New Yorker magazine.
