Reclaiming Life From Peripheral Neuropathy: Gerard’s Journey to Relief An Unexpected Setback For most people, retirement is a time for relaxation and enjoyment. For Gerard O., an 82-year-old former clinical social worker, it was exactly that—a series of "seven-day weekends" filled with activity and purpose. But about a year ago, things took a sudden turn when he began losing sensation in his feet. "There was no feeling in the bottom of my feet from my toes past the balls of my feet," Gerard explained. "The entire front part of my feet was numb. It wasn’t painful—just numb." Concerned, he visited a neurologist who tested his feet and delivered the diagnosis: peripheral neuropathy. The doctor warned him it was progressive, meaning it would likely get worse over time. Peripheral neuropathy occurs when peripheral nerves, are damaged. Symptoms often include pain, numbness, and tingling—especially in the hands and feet. As Gerard’s neuropathy worsened, he began experiencing balance issues. He could no longer stand for long periods without support and avoided walking on uneven surfaces like grass, fearing he might fall. Finding Hope at Acupuncture & Wellness of Pensacola “If neuropathy progresses, it can be quite crippling, but no one had offered me a proactive therapy,” Gerard shared. That’s when he stumbled upon an article about the potential of acupuncture to relieve neuropathy symptoms. Encouraged by what he read, he made an appointment with Dr. Rebecca Gibbons at Acupuncture and Wellness of Pensacola. Dr. Gibbons began by performing neurological tests on Gerard’s feet, revealing he had 60% sensory loss due to neuropathy. She explained, “Neuropathy can have different causes but is often linked to reduced blood flow to the nerves in the feet or hands. Without adequate nutrients, the nerves slowly die. Acupuncture helps by stimulating blood vessels, encouraging blood flow to those nerves. This increased blood flow delivers nutrients that support nerve repair.”

A Personalized Treatment Plan Gerard's treatment plan was customized to address his specific symptoms, their intensity, and the duration he had been experiencing them. “Each patient’s treatment is individualized so we can achieve the best possible outcome” Dr. Gibbons emphasized. “There’s no one-sizefits-all approach.” At the end of his initial treatment cycle, Gerard’s sensory loss had dropped from 60% to just 15%, a dramatic improvement. The change was not only measurable but also life-changing. Getting Back to Living Fully “My seven-day weekends have improved as well,” Gerard said with a smile. “I attended an event where I stood from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with just a little rest. I couldn’t have done that a few months ago.” Even his podiatrist took note. “He tested the feeling in my feet, and I scored a 17 out of 20. It’s verifiable improvement.” Today, Gerard’s confidence has been restored. “I’m able to walk longer than my dog can. I’m comfortable walking on grass now—something I used to avoid. It’s a great relief.” Hope for Others with Neuropathy Gerard’s story is a powerful reminder that relief from neuropathy is possible. If you’re experiencing numbness, tingling, or balance issues due to neuropathy, you don’t have to accept it as “just part of aging.”

If you or someone you love is suffering from neuropathy, call 850-530-1028 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Gibbons. Or learn more at WWW.AWPENSACOLA.COM

I hope you have all thawed from the Christmas cold and that your nonindigenous plants fared much better than mine. I love gardening, but we are all going to be exceptionally busy when spring comes around this year. Let’s hope all the plant nurseries are making large orders because every variety is going to be in huge demand. I hate looking at the sad remnants of my gardens, but I am afraid to pull up the remains in the hope that something may have survived and miraculously bud. On to the new year and all fresh possibilities. One of my favorite things about the new year is getting a new planner. Not just any new planner works for me. It has to have a nice cover—leather like, preferably, as this can take the abuse I tend to be guilty of. I like to have a pocket in the cover to hold invitations, or letters as back up to their entry on the calendar. And, I like nice big blocks with the entire month in front of me, just waiting to be filled with notes. I have learned over the years to make most entries in pencil so that I can erase if plans change. God forbid, if I have to scribble on my clean planner. My husband, on the other hand, is normally an organized person, except for his calendar. I get great anxiety looking at the mess. So much is scratched out, written outside the lines and in general is just not legible. I gave him nice pencils and a sharpener for Christmas as a not so subtle hint. Something inside of me hopes that if I keep the planner organized, everything else will follow suit. The first thing I do with my new book, in anticipation of the new year, is lay out an assortment of colored pens. I use an unusual shade to log in every birthday that needs notation. Oh, sure, I could just put them in the computer and get pop-up notices, but it’s just not the same. After birthdays, I enter the Auburn football schedule. Nothing, not trips, not weddings, not social events—nothing is allowed to interfere with game day. My niece got married this year IN OCTOBER. I was already planning my excuses for missing her day until I saw that she was having it on a Friday. What a relief! After prioritizing birthdays and college football season, I spend some time reviewing the month on last year’s planner to see if there is anything I need to repeat. It has become painfully obvious that each year is dotted with more doctor’s visits. It also seems that each year flies by faster than ever. More often than not, I come to the conclusion that I sure spent time on unimportant things last year and make a note to do better. I refer to this calendar countless times a day and depend on it to know where I should be and when I should be there. It really is the most important tool I have, next to my iPhone, of course. And, yes, I keep a much more abbreviated calendar on my phone to avoid ridicule from those who would say I am in the dark ages.

Over the last year it seems we have experienced more news of friends diagnosed with serious illnesses and worse, death of friends, making it all the more important to live every moment on that calendar as fully and richly as possible. The older I get, the more I realize how precious every single second is. So, as I sharpen my pencils and replenish my pens, and begin the annual ritual with my planner, I thank God for my family, my friends, my health and new page to fill with things that reflect what is really important in life. And what is a New Year without Resolutions? There is plenty in this world we can't change. I can’t give Auburn a winning football season or end the war in Ukraine, but I can improve myself. So here is my list and it probably is applicable for most of us. 1.

Assess your fitness level HONESTLY and act accordingly. Set your minimum exercise requirement and try to do better than that.

2.

Choose a new way to get involved in our community. The old cliché about giving is so true. Help others and you are rewarded more than they are.

3.

Appreciate your family. This one can be tough because there does come a time when enough is enough and forgiveness can be a real challenge. Not that this has happened to me, but occasionally there is an in-law that will require painful tolerance. For that matter, it could be an immediate family member. Tolerance and acceptance are two different subjects and there really isn’t a law that says you must cherish everyone who has the same lineage as you.

4.

Write more personal notes and mail them. Email and texting are fine, but nothing beats a handwritten message.

Happy New Year! January Birthdays 5

Pensacola Opera Presents 42nd Season Productions Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci Come to the Saenger this Spring by Alex Hilkey

Pensacola Opera will open its 42nd Season with Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro on January 24th and 26th, and close with Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci on March 14th and 16th. “As Pensacola Opera celebrates its 42nd Season, we build upon our momentum from last season with an exciting lineup of operatic performances and events. Our season represents the ultimate opera experience with two vastly different, yet classic offerings—something for everyone. Prepare to immerse yourself in an experience unlike any other,” Pensacola Opera General Director Chandra McKern said. Widely regarded as one of the greatest operas ever written, The Marriage of Figaro follows the witty and resourceful servant Figaro, played by Sidney Outlaw and his fiancée Susanna, portrayed by Jan Miller Studio Artist alum Nicole Heinen, as they outsmart their aristocratic masters, Count and Countess Almaviva. This opera is a delightful whirlwind of mistaken identities, romantic entanglements and social satire. With timeless melodies and unforgettable characters, it’s an evening of comic brilliance and profound humanity. The production features a talented cast of new and returning singers, including Pensacola native Renée Richardson as the Countess, Joseph Lattanzi as the Count and Jan Miller Studio Artist alum Erin Alford as the young page Cherubino. The cast is rounded out by our current Jan Miller Studio Artists, including Rachel Fitzgerald singing the spirited Barbarina, Micah Perry taking on the roles of Basilio and Don Curzio and Joseph O’Shea as the eccentric gardener, Antonio. “Le nozze di Figaro is the ultimate study in human behavior. A nobleman wishes to sleep with his servant's wife on their wedding night. Out of this simple premise, a tale of intrigue and clash of personalities

unfolds. Part of the magic of this opera is that Mozart composed a piece based on real human characters. The psychological profile of the characters and the thematic attention musically to each personality keeps modern audiences interested in this amazing piece of musical theater,” Pensacola Opera Artistic Director Corey McKern said.

The production features a talented Pensacola Opera debut cast, with tenor Ben Gulley as Canio (playing Pagliaccio in the play), a role that requires both vocal and dramatic prowess. Gather:

A Culinary Collective Pensacola Cooks Opens New Commissary Kitchen and Pop-Up Dining Space by Nicole Willis

P

ensacola Cooks recently opened its second commissary kitchen in Pensacola—Gather: A Culinary Collective. Gather is not just a commissary kitchen, though; the Gather team has instilled a concept that is new to the Pensacola area—a pop-up restaurant space. The new space will not only provide additional commissary kitchen space and food truck plug-in stations for local chefs and restauranteurs, but also a shared dining room for chefs to host rotating pop-up meal services throughout the week. Located just under half a mile away from Pensacola Cooks, Gather is situated at 41 S. Navy Blvd., in the former Ceviche 805 location. Since hosting its first pop-up food vendor on November 4, there has been a steady rotation of several businesses in and out of the door looking to utilize the commissary kitchen and pop-up restaurant space. Gather was born out of the increased demand for Pensacola Cooks’ commissary kitchen space. “At one point, we had a waitlist of close to 20 potential partners. They couldn’t move forward with their dreams and goals without our services. I felt pressure to help,” Gather's Director of Operations Denise Shelton said. Pensacola Cooks is a cooking education business that offers a variety of culinary experiences for adults, children and families, as well as a commissary kitchen for food entrepreneurs. The growing waitlist of local food vendors and chefs interested in Pensacola Cooks inspired the team to launch Gather.

“I don’t exactly know where the concept came from for the pop-up space, other than the fact that a handful of our current partner's goal was to open their own brick-andmortar someday. I felt like this would be the perfect opportunity for them to practice just that, and incubate their business. We have a strong sense of a micro-community within Pensacola Cooks, and this second location has encouraged that to blossom even more,” Shelton explained. , ue isq ot B Turnip and Carr

In addition to providing a great sense of community, commissary kitchens can also be beneficial in terms of legalities. According to Shelton, many different types of food businesses need to work out of commissary kitchens. In Florida, caterers, product manufacturers and mobile food dispensing vehicles all utilize commissary kitchens.

their food, but also a sit-down restaurant area where individuals can come to enjoy their food. The pop-up dining space serves as the first sit-down location for many of Gather’s current food vendors. Gather already has 11 total incubator partners. Eight of those partners are in the pop-up rotation and the other three are utilizing Gather as a market for their products to be purchased. Current pop-up incubator partners offer a diverse range of cuisines, including BAM Coffee, who offers assorted coffee beverages and light breakfast options, as well as vendors serving up lunch and dinner like Luther’s Touch of Heaven, Pensacola Catering, Ethiopian Cuisine by Friends and Steel Pony Diner. Gather also has food truck partners that include PipaSnacks, Arlene’s BBQ and Sweet Love. Ehrichson’s Bakery, T’s Bees Honey and The Sealey Sauce Company sell their products inside Gather.

Part of Gather's purpose is to serve as an incubator for chefs “We’ve been focusing on getting the pop-up concept off hoping to open their own place one day while eliminating the overhead costs that can be stressful for new businesses. the ground and, as history has proven to us over the past 20 years in business, as you walk, the path unfolds. We are Gather’s unique business model not only provides food excited to see how Gather takes on a life of its own, driven incubator partners with a kitchen space to cook and prepare by the passionate incubator partners,” Shelton said. 18 | JANUARY 2025

All Gather incubator partners are properly vetted to ensure they meet all legal and state requirements, including an inspection by the necessary state regulatory authority. Local vendors interested in becoming incubator partners should email denise@pensacolacooks.com. While the kitchen space can only be rented to those with approved food-related businesses, Gather does offer a private event space that is available for public rentals. The event space seats around 80 people, and is a great space for a baby or wedding shower, rehearsal dinner or other celebration. Those who rent out the event space have a selection of inhouse caterers, each specializing in their own style of cuisine. The ability to give event hosts so many different types of restaurants at your fingertips is something unique to Gather. Since Gather operates on a pop-up basis and is available for private events, their hours change regularly. Hours are often based on the times selected by the vendor that is occupying the space. Daily schedules are confirmed by the vendor and Gather’s team each week, and once finalized, the schedules are posted online on their website and Facebook page. Gather: A Culinary Collective is located at 41 S. Navy Blvd. in Pensacola. For more information on Gather, visit pensacolacooks.com/gather or check out “Gather: A Culinary Collective” on Facebook.

The Oyster Alliance Recycles Over 25 Tons of Oyster Shells by Morgan Cole

I

t’s no secret that oysters are a staple in the Florida Panhandle. Not only do they play a crucial role in the ecosystem, they also contribute to the local economy by supporting the commercial finishing industry. Thanks to a newly launched partnership program, one local organization is stepping up to bring the oysters shells left on your plate back into the water. The Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program (PPBEP) and its partners are teaming up with Pensacola Beach restaurants to collect their shucked oyster shells. The PPBEP is a regional, stakeholder-driven, sciencebased organization dedicated to restoring and preserving the Pensacola and Perdido Bay systems and their associated watersheds through restoration, education and monitoring. In August, the PPBEP launched a new partnership program consisting of local restaurants, nonprofits,

education programs and government agencies called the Oyster Alliance to ensure that oysters consumed in local restaurants are recycled back into the water to support future coastal restoration projects in Pensacola and Perdido Bays. Through this program, area restaurants can partner with the Oyster Alliance to collect and cure their shucked oyster shells, eventually returning the clean recycled shells to our local waters. The program’s ultimate goal is to improve water quality and bring back a once-thriving commercial industry. “The Oyster Alliance is far more than just a recycling program—it’s a commitment to bringing Pensacola and Perdido Bays’ oyster habitats back to life. Every shell saved becomes a stepping stone toward healthier coastal ecosystems and stronger, more resilient communities,” PPBEP Executive Director Matt Posner said.

PENSACOLA MAGAZINE | 21

Oysters in the Pensacola and Perdido Bay watershed, which extends from Orange Beach, Alabama to Okaloosa County, are in “critical decline” due to a variety of environmental factors such as overharvesting, declining water quality and increased sedimentation in local bays from stormwater runoff. With nearly half of the United States’ $250 million oyster industry based on the Gulf Coast, oysters support the livelihoods of fishermen, oyster farmers and seafood processors, generating income for restaurants and the local tourism industry. As a keystone species, oysters play a crucial role in supporting the natural ecosystem. They act as natural water filters, improving water quality by removing pollutants and excess nutrients. Under certain conditions, a single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day, according to NOAA Fisheries. Oyster reef formations also provide vital habitats and nursery grounds for crabs, shrimp and fish such as flounder and striped bass. Many marine species and shore birds rely on oysters for food. Recycled oyster shells also provide an ideal substrate for new oyster growth, supporting the recovery of the local

oyster population, while eliminating the disposal of shell to local landfills—a cost savings to local restaurants. Funded by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Transformational Habitat Restoration and Coastal Resilience Grant to Restore America’s Estuaries, the Oyster Alliance builds on a legacy of past efforts to create a regional sustainable oyster shell recycling alliance in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. The Oyster Alliance also receives support from a number of environmental organizations and coalitions from across the region, including the Gulf of Mexico Community-based Oyster Shell Recycling and Reef Restoration Network. Administered by Restore America’s Estuaries, this program consists of a partnership of organizations located across the Gulf Coast to help advance oyster shell recycling and restoration initiatives, including the Oyster Alliance administered by PPBEP. OysterCorps, a nationally recognized Conservation Corps Program, also plays a key role in The Oyster Alliance program and supports shell recycling, collection and outreach on behalf of PPBEP. As a dual environmental restoration and workforce training initiative, OysterCorps engages local youth in coastal restoration and resilience projects such as oyster habitat, seagrass, dune systems and tidal marsh restoration. Corps members also gain on-the-job training, industry certifications, academic programming, leadership skills and support to become environmental stewards. “Working alongside OysterCorps, Santa Rosa and Escambia counties and the incredible support of local restaurants and their diners, the Oyster Alliance showcases the power of community partnerships. Together, we’re transforming simple actions into meaningful, lasting change for our environment and our future,” Posner said.

22 | JANUARY 2025

“The Oyster Alliance is far more than just a recycling program—it’s a commitment to bringing Pensacola and Perdido Bays’ oyster habitats back to life." Already making an impressive impact, The Oyster Alliance has collected more than 25 tons (50,680 lbs) of oyster shells since October 2024—the equivalent weight of a fully loaded semi-truck. Pensacola’s love for oysters is no secret, and these numbers certainly prove it.

Once signed by President Joe Biden, the legislation will serve to direct the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to formally enroll the PPBEP into the National Estuary Program and designate Pensacola and Perdido Bays as “estuaries of national significance.”

“The best part of oyster shell recycling is the community gets to be part of the solution, and it’s as easy as enjoying a delicious oyster dinner. Whether you love them poached, grilled, Rockefeller-style, or raw with a squeeze of lemon (like me), every bite helps the restoration effort when you dine at participating restaurants,” PPBEP Coastal Restoration Coordinator Paige Lansky said.

Once signed, the PPBEP will be the first agency in 30 years to receive the coveted designation of National Estuary Program.

Participating Pensacola Beach restaurants include Felix’s Restaurant and Oyster Bar, The Grand Marlin, Peg Leg Pete’s and Red Fish Blue Fish.

The National Estuary Program was established by Congress in 1987 as part of the Clean Water Act in response to threatened estuaries along the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts and in Puerto Rico. Prioritizing Social Connection in a Digital World by Darien Hardy

Humans are naturally social creatures, and our social relationships are inherently complex and fulfilling. Proper socialization provides us with a sense of connection, purpose, support and, ultimately, overall better health and longevity. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of social health has become top of mind, albeit, much more technologically heavy. For so many of us, relying on online interactions through screens became the primary way to socialize—even beyond the pandemic. Engaging with others solely from behind a screen can lead to a decreased ability to engage in meaningful, in-person connections with others, often resulting in a feeling of disconnection and a lack of deep social interaction. With the days of social isolation now behind us, it's time to take a look at how we interact with others and start engaging and

connecting through personal interaction. Many studies have shown that people who have fulfilling relationships with family, friends and community members are happier, have fewer health problems and live longer. If you are looking to improve your social health, consider setting a New Year's resolution to engage more with your community, friends and family outside of the use of technology. Our vibrant community offers many opportunities for individuals to connect with each other and disconnect from technology. Whether you’re into fitness activities like pickleball or walking, or enjoy something more creative like art, there are numerous ways you can engage and connect with others right here in our community. Here are some specific events, clubs and programs currently taking place throughout our local community that invite you to connect and engage.

Finding Balance

in Diet Trends

Courtesy of Baptist Health Care

Following a trends may work well for choosing clothes, home decorations and hair styles, but when it comes to nutrition, following a trendy diet for the long period of time may not be best for your body or your lifestyle. Trendy, or fad, diets are popular weight-loss plans that often promise dramatic results. Many of them involve eliminating foods or entire food groups. Here are five of the most popular diets and what you should know about them as you consider nutrition and your food options:

Keto

Keto, short for ketogenic, is a dietary regimen that's high in fat and low in carbohydrates. The goal of the keto diet is to help with weight loss, improve mental clarity and increase energy levels. The keto diet involves consuming a very low amount of carbohydrates and replacing them with fat to help your body burn fat for energy. Keto was originally used to treat epilepsy in children whose diets were not working. It works by putting the body in a metabolic (fasting) state because of the limited carb intake but it still supplies enough energy to support most needs. The body goes into ketosis and begins to burn fat for fuel. • Pros: Keto offers accelerated weight loss and helps with blood sugar management. Research shows that it has been helpful in some athletic training, cancer treatments and neurologic conditions. • Cons: Keto has been known to possibly cause some kidney damage, digestive discomfort, nutrient deficiency and social isolation due to concerns about available food options.

Paleo Whole30

Gluten-Free

• Pros: The Paleo Whole30 program has been helpful in weight loss, blood sugar regulation, improvement in digestion, reduction in inflammation, improvement in chronic health conditions and better sleep habits.

• Pros: Gluten-free helps reduce processed foods in diet and can help with weight loss. It reduces inflammation and aids in digestion, both needed for celiac disease.

This dietary approach combines the principles of the paleo diet with the strict 30-day elimination phase of the Whole30 program. For this diet, you’ll only consume whole, unprocessed foods (like those considered paleo) for 30 days to identify potential food sensitivities and reset your eating habits. The goal is to then reintroduce certain foods carefully to see how your body reacts. The diet is set up as a modern eating style to imitate the hunter and gatherer ancestors that prioritized eating whole foods. It reduces processed foods (chemically altered foods), has lower sodium, little or no sugar, no beans and legumes, has little to no alcohol and no dairy.

• Cons: Paleo Whole30 diets can be costly. Vegetarians and athletes may find it hard to stick to this diet.

This diet is free of gluten, which are proteins found in wheat, barley, rye, triticale (a cross between wheat and rye) and many oat products. It was originally introduced to help celiac disease patients and individuals with other autoimmune conditions. Gluten-fee diets have also become popular among people who haven't been diagnosed with a gluten-related medical condition for its claimed dietary benefits. On this diet, you need to learn which foods contain gluten and avoid them. This is not easy, because gluten is in many foods and food products. Because you cut out a whole group of foods, a gluten-free diet can cause you to lose weight.

• Cons: Gluten-free can be hard to commit to long-term. Products can be challenging to find and costly when available. Reducing or removing all gluten can lead to possible nutrient deficiencies.

Intermittent Fasting

This is an eating plan that involves alternating between fasting (not eating) and eating on a regular schedule. Intermittent fasting (IF) is based on the idea that when we restrict food, our bodies will use fat stores for energy more quickly, leading to weight loss and other health benefits. It doesn’t specify foods that are allowed or not allowed but rather when you should eat them. It can cause a reduction in calories and create a metabolic shift to use fat for energy. There are many ways to do IF, but a popular approach is the 16/8 method. With this method, you eat all your meals during an 8-hour window and then don't eat for the remaining 16 hours. • Pros: IF has no food specifics. Therefore, you can eat whatever you like in the allowed time frame. • Cons: IF is hard to manage long-term, and it may not support metabolic and hormone systems. Some people may not lose weight because they are overeating or eating unhealthy or processed foods in their allowed eating period.

What’s the Right Way to Eat? * Now that we’ve covered these popular diets, it’s important to note that there is no one right way to eat. Every individual is different and bodies may need customization when it comes to energy and the right balance. A general rule when it comes to good nutrition is to eat fresh, whole foods as often as possible. Try to eat foods with a shorter expiration date. If an item can sit on a shelf or in a cupboard for a long time, and it has a long list of ingredients, then it may not be the best for you. Before proceeding with a diet or lifestyle change, always talk to your doctor or dietician. What to know before you try any diet: • Talk to your doctor before you begin a drastic, new way of eating. Your physician may want to monitor your health progress. • If you’re taking medication, you should consider how that medication could affect or be affected due to dietary changes. • Track your energy, blood sugar levels and other vital signs to ensure you are staying well. • If you want a boost to your weight loss or for other health reasons, then try these diets on a short-term basis to see how they work for you. • Keep in mind what you can manage for the long-term lifestyle, both personally and financially.

*This information was provided by Jessica Gilkey, RD, LD/N, registered dietitian, licensed dietitian/nutritionist and health coach. Baptist Health Care does not recommend or endorse any particular diet.

Mediterranean

The Mediterranean diet is a plant-based eating style that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and healthy fats. It also includes fish and poultry, and limits red meat, processed foods and added sugars. This eating pattern emphasizes plant-based foods, minimally processed ingredients and whole grains. It replaces saturated fats like butter, with unsaturated fats like olive oil. The diet recommends using herbs and spices to flavor foods rather than salt. It limits red meat to no more than a few times per week and recommends fish and poultry at least twice per week. Optional red wine in moderation is allowed. This diet is often recommended to prevent and treat heart disease. • Pros: Mediterranean offers a more diverse option of foods. It has heart health benefits and potential weight loss. It has also been known to reduce blood sugar. • Cons: While the cons are negligible, overuse of olive oil and nuts could lead to weight gain. This style of eating can be more costly and those with certain health conditions may need to avoid wine and dairy. PENSACOLA MAGAZINE | 31

ONE WELL LIFE A Shocking New Workout One Well Life Brings EMS Training to Pensacola Are you looking for a cutting-edge exercise modality that boasts less workout time and excellent results? One Well Life (OWL) has brought just that to Pensacola with its innovative electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) exercise program. What started as a personal mission for co-owner Brandon Sandefur quickly grew into a unique fitness studio he opened along with his friend and business partner, Mason Hicks, a physician’s assistant. Sandefur and Hicks, along with their wives Andrea and Brittany, brought this state-of-the-art technology to the Gulf Coast as a way for people of all fitness levels to exercise smarter—not harder. Sandefur found EMS out of necessity. After a college career in football and nine surgeries on everything from his shoulders to his knees, traditional workouts became too painful. “I’d go to the gym, but I wasn’t getting anything out of

34 | JANUARY 2025

it anymore. It would hurt, and I’d need days to recover,” he explained. Sandefur’s background uniquely positioned him to bring EMS to Pensacola. After college, he spent 23 years in finance, building a career that allowed him to retire early. His passion for performance and recovery stemmed from his days as a football player, where he experienced the toll of physical exertion firsthand. “I’ve had just about everything torn or broken at some point,” he said. “Shoulders, wrists, biceps, knees—you name it. After nine surgeries, I knew I had to find a way to keep moving.” Frustrated and searching for a solution, he discovered EMS through his friend Hicks and his wife, Brittany, a certified personal trainer. “I realized after using EMS one time, this is it,” Sandefur said. “Not just for me, but for anyone dealing with pain, limited mobility or even busy schedules. I thought, ‘We have to bring this to Pensacola.’”

Brandon and Andrea Sandefur

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) workouts use electrical impulses to contract muscles in a way that traditional workouts can’t replicate. Sandefur explained that during an EMS session, participants wear a specialized suit embedded with electrodes. These electrodes send low-frequency electrical pulses to major muscle groups, activating over 90 percent of muscle fibers at once—far more than conventional exercises engage. “There are different frequencies that you can use with this,” Sandefur said. “The lower frequencies are for people who are trying to build muscle and gain strength. The higher ones are for people want a more aerobic workout.” Perhaps the best thing about EMS is the time requirement. An EMS workout lasts just 20 minutes, but practitioners claim it delivers the results of a 90-minute gym session or even more. That’s because the electrical pulses cause muscles to work harder, deeper, and more efficiently. Sandefur also emphasizes that the OWL program is not a gym—it’s a fitness studio that offers one-on-one personal training in conjunction with EMS training. “It’s not about replacing traditional exercise entirely but maximizing effort and results in a fraction of the time,” Sandefur explained. “It’s also incredibly low-impact, which makes it ideal for injury recovery, older clients or anyone who can’t handle high-intensity workouts.” OWL uses both the Miha and the Wiemspro EMS suits—both top-of-the-line suits that have been

Mason and Brittany Hicks

cleared by the FDA. The suit is fitted with strategically placed electrodes that deliver customized levels of stimulation to each muscle group. At OWL, clients start with a consultation to assess their goals—whether it’s strength training, weight loss, injury rehab or improving overall fitness. Clients are scanned by a Styku 3D scanning machine that evaluates multiple body composition metrics and provides a baseline as clients begin their EMS journey. Clients are encouraged to rescan at varying intervals to monitor progress. During a session, clients perform simple bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges and planks while the EMS suit stimulates different muscle regions and enhances the workout. “You’re exercising, but the suit takes it to the next level. It’s like having an invisible weight that your body responds to,” Sandefur said. “Anyone can benefit from EMS because it’s personalized to your fitness level and goals. It doesn’t matter if you’re in peak condition or just getting started.” Sandefur explained that clients often see results like weight loss, toned muscles, improved posture and reduced back pain within weeks. In addition, EMS also stimulates the smaller, stabilizing muscles, which leads to better overall strength, balance and endurance. One Well Life is located at 3101 E. Cervantes St., Suite-D. HOTWORX Sweat it Out

HOTWORX Heats Up Your Exercise Routine One hot trend in the fitness world is HOTWORX, a new gym that offers an innovative exercise program that combines the benefits of infrared heat absorption with guided workouts. Pensacola native Kyle Lay opened HOTWORX with his parents and business partners, James and Rita Lay, to help people meet their fitness goals in a more efficient, personalized and high-tech environment. Lay’s first Hotworx studio on Nine Mile Road quickly gained a loyal following, and he has recently opened a second location on 12th Avenue in East Hill. HOTWORX is a 24-hour studio that offers virtually instructed infrared sauna workouts (also known as 3D Training) designed to help people sweat more, burn more calories and recover faster. HOTWORX provides a private,

36 | JANUARY 2025

spa-like experience with multiple infrared saunas that fit two to three people each. The recently opened East Hill location offers eight saunas with large-screen TV monitors for virtual instruction. Four empty saunas are used for 45-minute isometric exercises like yoga, Pilates, core and more. The other four saunas are for high-intensity interval training (HITT) exercises, and house equipment like cycles, sitting ellipticals and rowing machines. These high-intensity rooms are scheduled for 15-minute intense workouts, but multiple sessions can be done back-to-back for those who can work out in the heat for longer periods of time. In each sauna, virtual instructors guide clients through workouts and offer modifications for easier or more difficult variations.

Kyle Lay

The HOTWORX method is based on the idea that heat raises core body temperature and speeds up metabolism. The infrared heat used in HOTWORX penetrates the body, causing you to sweat and accelerating the detoxification process. When core body temperature rises, there is an anabolic effect that speeds up metabolism. In addition, infrared heat can also strengthen and activate the regenerative processes in the human body. Workouts in an infrared environment can help clients burn more calories and accelerate recovery. HOTWORX also uses technology to integrate with many popular fitness devices. Members can also utilize the Hotworx app to book sessions, track calories burned and monitor workout progress. The app also syncs with most smartwatches to give real-time feedback and to add to your workout goals. Outside of the saunas, HOTWORX also offers the FX Zone (Functional Exercise Zone), which provides members with an area for functional workouts between infrared sessions. Bands, weights, ropes and other equipment are available for any combination of functional training exercises and routines. A trainer video is on display with various routines recommended for the FX Zone equipment.

One of the major draws for the gym is flexibility. HOTWORX is open 24/7, so clients can work out whenever it fits their schedule. Staff is available during regular business hours, but members can use a secure door code to access the gym 24/7. HOTWORX is part of a larger fitness trend focusing on efficiency and personalization. For Lay, bringing that efficiency, personalization and 24-hour access to the Pensacola community is what it’s all about. “It’s rewarding to bring something so unique to my hometown,” he said. “HOTWORX isn’t just about getting fit—it’s about giving people the tools to feel their best every day.” Lay wants to keep HOTWORX pricing simple and affordable. He will be running specials at the East Hill location through January. The new East Hill HOTWORX is located at 3439-C N 12th Ave. For more information, call (850) 780-1073 or visit hotworx.net/studio/ pensacola-fl-east-hill.

THE EXERCISE COACH

An Intelligent Workout

The Exercise Coach Harnesses the Power of AI and Robotics If you're looking for a highly intelligent coach to design your workouts specifically for your unique abilities and mobility levels, The Exercise Coach might be for you. This fitness studio offers personal training sessions developed by artificial intelligence that utilize robotic equipment to create customized and efficient workouts for busy clients who want to improve their health without sacrificing time or risking injury. After discovering The Exercise Coach’s approach to fitness in California, owners Tracey and Evan Forbes knew it was something they wanted to bring to Pensacola when they decided to relocate here. Evan is a retired swimming coach and Tracey is a retired science teacher, so they already had a solid understanding of the importance of fitness, healthy lifestyles, discipline and efficiency.

38 | JANUARY 2025

The key component of the program is the technology that combines Exerbotic machines and proprietary smart technology to create state-of-the-art computerized equipment that delivers highly efficient and effective workouts. This technology adapts to each individual’s strength and abilities and provides customized resistance levels for every movement. The equipment tracks progress in real time and offers immediate feedback to help clients stay motivated and on track. By targeting specific muscle groups and avoiding unnecessary strain, the Forbes say the technology helps clients to work smarter, not harder. Even those with prior injuries or physical limitations can participate because the equipment is designed to minimize joint stress and prioritize safety.

Tracey and Evan Forbes

Clients also get two trainers—the Exerbotic machine and a human trainer who is present at every workout. Each client begins with a comprehensive consultation, including a detailed body composition analysis. This data helps the coaches and the computer design a program tailored to the client’s specific needs and It works a bit like a video game with the computer goals. The studio is also appointment-based, so monitor asking you to stay within a defined area on the clients can receive one-on-one attention during every screen by increasing or decreasing resistance. workout session. Another unique aspect is that the resistance is used in both the eccentric and concentric movements to maximize effort. The eccentric movement is when a muscle lengthens. The concentric movement is when a muscle shortens while contracting.

Another great plus is that workouts are only 20 minutes long and take place twice a week. "The adaptive resistance technology is designed to maximize muscle engagement and stimulate metabolic activity," Tracey explained. "Research shows that high-intensity, low-duration strength training can improve muscle tone, boost metabolism and enhance overall health. There is also a functional fitness aspect to the program. It really helps clients build strength that helps in everyday activities, such as lifting groceries, climbing stairs or playing with grandkids."

City of Pensacola Receives $5.95 Million Award for Carpenter Creek Bayou Texar Outfalls Project by Morgan Cole

The City of Pensacola has been awarded $5.12 million in RESTORE funding from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for the Carpenter Creek Bayou Texar Outfalls Project. The funding will be utilized to help improve Bayou Texar's water quality and ecological health through the addition of five advanced stormwater treatment measures along the bayou. This funding comes in addition to the $830,000 that the city received in October to design, engineer and permit advanced stormwater treatment measures that will remove debris and floatables from the water at the five outfalls before the pollutants enter the bayou — ultimately enhancing the overall water quality and connected waterways. With notification from FDEP of the $5.12 million award to complete the project's implementation phase, the city has been granted a total of $5.95 million for the Carpenter Creek Bayou Texar Outfalls Project. "This is a project that the city has worked on for many years prior to my tenure as mayor," Pensacola Mayor

48 | JANUARY 2025

D.C. Reeves said. "Receiving the funds for planning and being awarded the funds for implementation is a significant milestone for residents, as Carpenter Creek and Bayou Texar are vital waterways for our community.” The treatment measures installed through this project will collect stormwater runoff from approximately 40 acres of densely populated Bayou Texar watershed and trap sediment, trash, oils, greases and other pollutants inside. This process will lead to cleaner water being discharged into Bayou Texar and Pensacola Bay. The stormwater treatment facility will be constructed to capture and treat stormwater that flows off Olive Road into Carpenter Creek, then through Bayou Texar and into Pensacola Bay. The project is also expected to help alleviate flooding from a historic flood zone near Whitmire Drive and Sabra Drive.

The stormwater treatment measures will be added at the following locations along Bayou Texar: • Gadsden Street • East Gonzalez Street • West Gonzalez Street • Cove Road • Hyde Park Implementation funding through FDEP's RESTORE program is expected to be finalized in early 2025. For additional information and to view a detailed project map, visit bit.ly/BayouOutfalls. Around the Region Residents Encouraged to Complete Annual City of Pensacola Satisfaction Survey The City of Pensacola's annual resident satisfaction survey is now available online for city residents, with new questions this year about a new parking structure, economic development, recycling services, downtown Pensacola, and more. All City of Pensacola residents are encouraged to participate in the survey and provide the city with valuable feedback on city services and priorities. There are two ways to take the survey: • Online: Visit uwf.edu/HaasResidentSurvey • By phone: Call (850) 495-2666 Monday through Friday between 8 am and 5 pm (Please hold phone calls until January 6, 2025). The survey deadline is January 17, 2025. Residents should also receive a postcard in the mail prompting them to complete the survey. The survey asks residents about their satisfaction with a variety of city services and facilities, including street lights, sidewalks, neighborhood safety and more, also prompting participants to rank their top priorities for the City of Pensacola. “We have established that we want to make our decisions at City Hall in conjunction with what our residents feel are concerns and priorities,” Mayor D.C. Reeves said. “This format has proven successful this year with our Strategic Plan process, as well as updating our Community Redevelopment Agency plans. The community voice is paramount as we continue to improve our city.” The city's annual survey is being conducted by the University of West Florida Haas Center. All data obtained from participants will be kept confidential and will only be reported in an aggregate format (by reporting only combined results and never reporting individual ones). Only residents within City of Pensacola limits may complete the survey. Responses will be used to help the city balance priorities and improve services to maintain a high quality of life for Pensacola residents.

Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program Earns National Designation On December 9, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary of National Significance Act, directing the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to formally enroll the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program (PPBEP) into the National Estuary Program and designate Pensacola and Perdido Bays as “Estuaries of National Significance.” The bill passed unanimously in the U.S. Senate in March and now heads to President Biden to be signed into law. U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Rick Scott (R-FL) introduced the legislation to federally designate the PPBEP to leverage federal, state, and local government funding to address water quality and resource challenges in Pensacola and Perdido Bays. “The Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary of National Significance Act will take important steps in our fight to protect and conserve Florida’s environment and natural resources. I am proud that our good bill was passed by the House of Representatives, unanimously passed by the Senate and now heads to the president’s desk to be signed into law—a major win for Florida’s panhandle,” Florida Senator Rick Scott said.

EPA’s National Estuary Program was established by Congress in 1987 to support non-regulatory, science-based, and locallydriven programs across the U.S. to address resource management challenges. The PPBEP will be the first new National Estuary Program added to the existing 28 programs in over 30 years. “This is an overdue recognition of the economic and environmental importance of Pensacola and Perdido Bays to Northwest Florida and our nation. The National Estuary Program designation will supplement current local and state investments that are already generating regional water quality improvements and enhancing the resilience of surrounding local communities,” Florida’s Chief Resilience Officer Dr. Wes Brooks said. The health and resilience of Pensacola and Perdido Bays are critical to the regional economy. Through the National Estuary Program, local communities are empowered to identify natural resource challenges and implement solutions through science-based, community-driven actions. The designation ensures a commitment to improving water quality and enhancing community resilience in Northwest Florida and southern Alabama through strategic partnerships and investments. “On behalf of the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program Board of Directors, we are grateful Congress has acted on the legislation introduced by Senator Rubio and Senator Scott, with the support of Congressman Dunn and Congressman Bean, to designate Pensacola and Perdido Bays as Estuaries of National Significance. This designation represents a transformational opportunity for our communities to support continued growth while improving water quality and ensuring the long-term stewardship of our natural resources. We urge the EPA Administrator to act quickly on enrolling PPBEP into the National Estuary Program so it may continue to execute on its critical mission,” Escambia County Commissioner and PPBEP Board Chairman Mike Kohler said. Since creation in 2018, PPBEP and its partners have secured over $30 million to implement priority restoration, resilience, and conservation projects in the Pensacola and Perdido Bay watersheds. This action ensures funding and policy decisions made today support the long-term sustainability of the region’s natural resources and economy. “Designation as a National Estuary Program is a generational investment in the restoration and conservation of our estuaries and watersheds. Children growing up in Northwest Florida today enjoy much of the same quality of life their parents and grandparents grew up with: access to fishing, swimming, and exploring our area’s beautiful natural resources. Thanks to Congress, and the leadership of Senator Rubio and Senator Scott, this designation will allow us to build on existing efforts to ensure investments and decisions made today supports our way of life for generations to come,” PPBEP Executive Director Matt Posner said. Many local and national partners have worked for years to secure National Estuary Program designation, recognizing working at the watershed-scale through partnerships is a far more effective and efficient approach to improving water quality, restoring habitat and supporting community resilience. Baptist Health Care Foundation announces the 2024 Hollinger Award recipients for outstanding service contributions to Baptist Health Care. The awards are presented to individuals, families or organizations that have exhibited exceptional generosity and community leadership through gifts of their time and/or financial support.

“Our team members are extremely committed to living our core value of championing community,” said Kim Aderholdt, VP, Greater Pensacola Operations at Navy Federal. “More than two dozen nonprofits in our area benefited from the Dollars for Doers program this year, which speaks to how devoted our employees are to fostering community connections and prospering important causes.” Community Service Champion Elizabeth Haymans was selected for a grant this year in honor of her volunteer work with the Escambia County Public Schools Foundation for Excellence. As a longtime leader for Navy Federal’s School Partnerships Program, Haymans manages the credit union’s Take Stock in Children partnership, which pairs students with Navy Federal mentors who help them develop soft skills for early careers. “Dollars for Doers allows us to lean into the credit union’s philosophy of people helping people,” said Haymans, Project Manager at Navy Federal. “We’re putting an investment back into our children, schools and communities through these programs and donations of time, treasure and talent.” In addition to the Dollars for Doers program, Navy Federal empowers its employees to serve their communities through 8 hours of paid volunteer leave annually. In 2023, more than 4,500 team members serving at the credit union’s Pensacola Campus donated nearly 30,000 volunteer hours to their community through this employer benefit. City Awarded $140,800 in Grant Funding The City of Pensacola has been awarded a $140,800 planning grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All program to conduct a comprehensive roadway lighting safety assessment through the Illuminating Safety in Pensacola project. The project's assessment will include a deficiency analysis, inventory needs, and best practices for effective lighting installations that address safety for vulnerable users during dark conditions and improve the safety and security of all road users, including those in wheelchairs and other mobility devices. The supplemental planning effort will address the need to study improved and expanded lighting options — a top priority identified in the city's 2023 Active Transportation Plan. "This planning grant will allow us to conduct a city-wide lighting assessment and address our city's generational lighting issues in a data-driven way," Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said. "I'm very thankful to our Public Works team and DOT for helping us secure this grant and improve safety throughout Pensacola." This funding is in addition to the $176,000 DOT grant that the city was awarded in November 2023 to pilot and evaluate temporary roadway enhancements and traffic calming activities, such as shared lane markings and curb extensions on Gonzalez Street. The 2023 funding was also awarded to conduct road safety audits at key intersections on the city’s High Injury Network to analyze crashes and identify engineering countermeasures using a safe systems approach. To learn more about Safe Streets and Roads for All program, visit the U.S. Department of Transportation website at transportation.gov.

4. Hire Professionals Work with experienced contractors and designers. Their expertise can help you avoid common pitfalls and ensure your remodel meets all safety and building codes. What’s more, these professionals have likely encountered and overcome all kinds of challenges, which means they’ll be well-prepared to help you navigate unexpected obstacles and provide a wealth of knowledge from previous clients to help make recommendations for the perfect finished space. 5. Stay Flexible Be prepared for unexpected challenges and delays. Stay adaptable and open to changes and remember patience is key to achieving the kitchen of your dreams. Materials go on backorder and paperwork gets misplaced all the time. Set a realistic timeline for your project that allows for some hiccups and try to avoid becoming too rigidly attached to any single element of the design, so if you have to make a modification, it doesn’t feel like a monumental sacrifice.
