Kelly Oden Executive EditorI say it every year, but it bears repeating—October is the absolute best month here in Pensacola! Every year, September leaves me worn out, sweaty and tired of the heat and humidity. Just when I’m ready to throw in the towel and never leave my house, October rides in on its crisp, cool horse and saves the day. I recently moved and my new house has a balcony off the master bedroom. I am already planning my October morning coffee and evening wind down on that balcony—cool breezes and all. I’m also planning my return to socializing in public at the many fall festivals and events happening this month. Hope to see you there!

I don’t know about you, but 2020 offered far too little of either of these to me. I was so consumed with my mom’s illness and then with surviving the grief of her loss and the anxiety of the pandemic and the sorrow of so many national news stories that I took little time for myself. This year, I hope to explore creative and personal endeavors that help me rediscover myself and discover new outlets for personal expression.
If exotic animals are more your thing, head on over to the brand spanking new and significantly enlarged Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. The new location features all the hands-on, up close interaction as the previous location plus added attractions, amenities and experiences that will make for a wonderful family day out.
Our cover story features a stunning Old East Hill Queen Anne Victorian, lovingly restored to its former glory and now serving as a unique and luxurious Airbnb. Owners Bruce Block and Tony Rhodes did an incredible job restoring and improving the historic Marzoni House. Step back in time with us as we explore the history, and future, of this architectural gem.
On that note, I encourage you to read our COVID-19 Resource Guide, which provides resources for food, business, community and more. The ever-changing nature of this crisis necessitates that I mention that these resources may or may not be available to you by the time you read this issue. I hope it will provide a place to start, some ideas or some inspiration either way.

As I mentioned, it is October and that means outdoor fun in Pensacola. This month, we are highlighting some of the best ways to enjoy the crisp air, changing leaves, spooky thrills and farm fun this fall. So, get your sweaters out, grab a pumpkin spice anything and head on out to all of the cool Pensacola festivities happening in October!

If you’re interested in conservation, check out Dakota Parks story on local Panhandle Rooftop Nesting Biologist, Rebekah Snyder. Through her work with Audubon Florida, Snyder helps to ensure local shorebirds have safe nesting spaces in an increasingly overpopulated region.
You may also notice that we have some nonpandemic related stories in this issue. We made the call to include already planned articles that might still be helpful, relevant or enjoyable for our readers. We hope you find them useful.
Another quintessential fall event is the Pensacola Humane Society's Barktoberfest, a well-loved fundraising event that brings together pet lovers and their furry friends together for a day of fun and compassion at the Maritime Park. supports the good and important work of the Humane Society, and we hope you will head out and support them, too.
While many people made glorious headway on home improvement and personal projects in 2020, I did not. I did not organize anything. I did not fix anything. I did not learn a language or a new skill. Nothing. But that’s ok, too. I’m still here. That’s an accomplishment. However, in 2021, I’d like to lighten my load and empty my house of much of the clutter and unnecessary junk that fills it. It’s time to make room for something new.
All of this, plus a few DIY pet treat recipes and some good news from the Florida legislature regarding protection for pets in abusive situations.

While it may seem a bit too soon for Foo Foo Festival coverage, we like to start getting the word out in October to give people plenty of time to plan for this early November event. This year marks the tenth anniversary of this annual celebration of arts and culture and 2023 promises a feast for the senses, with 12 days of music, art and performances that will leave you both impressed and inspired. Check out our recommendations on page 27.
So, turn off the news, put down your phone and enjoy these heartwarming tales and adorable of photos of local animals and the folks who care for them. When you’re done, give your kitty a little catnip and throw your dog a bone. It’s these simple pleasures that will keep us all sane.
In this issue, we’ve covered all of these topics and more to help readers shift their own focus in 2021. We hope you enjoy. Here’s to your health!
As always, I hope you enjoy the issue. Enjoy October, Pensacola!

By now you have all seen, heard and read countless deserved tributes following the passing of the one and only Jimmy Buffett. I think most of us have experienced some kind of connection that we feel regarding him or his legacy. Maybe you loved his music. Maybe you went to his concerts. Maybe you have a coconut bra and a Hawaiian shirt. Or maybe you were lucky enough to know him. Regardless, the grief runs deep these days. I hope it truly is as he said–like a wake behind a boat. Rough at first but if you keep going, it smooths out a bit and is manageable. I hope. My own personal connection to him began as it did for so many people and that was through his music. I worked at a hotel on the beach during summers of my Auburn college years. It was the old Holiday Inn on Navarre Beach that has long since been blown away and its foundation remains gobbled up by the Gulf. The hotel wasn’t anything particularly great until the state of the art holidome extension was added one year, making it much more of a tourist destination. It had a fancy bar upstairs and a little stage for live music. Jaws 2 was largely filmed there, cementing its place in local history. But, the first summer I worked there in pre-holidome years, our best form of music entertainment that we had to offer was the jukebox. I spent almost all of my tip money in that jukebox playing Jimmy Buffett’s breakthrough hit, Come Monday. Fast forward a few years. I have no idea how many JB concerts I have gone to. 20? 30? I’m not sure, but I do remember first seeing him
live at Jazz Fest in New Orleans. The songs that made him the most fun entertainer in that festival more than 40 years ago are still my favorites that he ever recorded. Everyone knew all of the words. Everyone sang with him. Everyone was swept up in the culture he perfected. And through the years, contrary to what he said, it did remain the same because fans wouldn’t have it any other way. It was a break from the real world to go to his show surrounded by only smiles, energy and happiness and dreams of booze and beaches. And age had nothing to do with it. My son and his friends were parrotheads during their teens. JB sang music that all generations appreciated. Well, most of it anyway.
My husband has been friends with Jimmy Buffett for many years. A group of eight or nine guys had a group that fished regularly- all fly fishing. At least once a year JB flew (literally, as he piloted) them all down to the Caribbean sunshine where they would take over a lodge. Fly fishing by day, misbehaving by night. Yes, all adults. Sort of. The stories that came out of those trips were classic Buffett. Tall tales, lots of laughter, lots of god only knows what, and lots of, of course, his music. That entire group of guys are a story in themselves as all are artists in some way. All love a good time. And they all love, I mean seriously LOVE, fly fishing, the common denominator amongst the group. My husband is an early riser and he would always tell me that when he got up at 6 am for coffee, Jimmy had already gone paddle boarding and was in a make shift studio writing and working on a new song. He worked incredibly hard for his success and never once took it for granted or put it on cruise control. Having a husband who is close friends to someone like that meant I wormed my way into their orbit by default. Whenever JB came this way he either stayed with us or at least stopped by for a visit. We took him to dinner here one year when he and another band member came in. I hope I don’t embarrass anyone with a recount of the story but we did make arrangements to take him to Global Grill. We swore Jane Taylor, owner, to secrecy for obvious reasons. We got there before our guests and everyone in there was already whispering about him. “Where is he?” “When is he getting here?” “Don’t worry. I am the only
one she told.” Ha! I understand that’s tough to keep quiet. We had an awesome dinner there sitting in the back of the restaurant and only one fan approached him while we were dining. He asked her to wait until we all finished and then she could get a photo. True to his word, he posed for everyone who wanted a shot.
His “managers” always invited us to shows and generously invited us backstage with our guests so they could meet the main attraction. He was never anything but fun, gracious, and warm. We saw him often in Orange Beach, including the famous show held there during the BP oil spill. But we also saw him in Paris and that’s when I really got to know how complex he truly was. Yes, he loved beaches and surfing and all things warm. But this was a man who was fluent in French, who knew and appreciated fine wine and who had a primary residence in New York. Brilliant, sophisticated, workaholic, poet and genius. It was crazy seeing the packed house in Paris where people of all nationalities crowded for his performance. Seems the craving for a chill life on the beach isn’t restricted to us Americans. And of course, concluding the show with He Went to Paris brought the house down.
I walked out to our guest cottage last weekend when I thought I could handle seeing the pages he signed in the book we keep there. Joy breathes from every word. When I read what his daughters had to say about his final days and about how positive he still was, I didn’t doubt it for a second. Here was a man who chose happiness and who lived every moment to the max.
I asked him once how he managed to stay out of the tabloids. He told me no one is in the tabloids who doesn’t want to be there. Maybe that’s true, but I do know that he stayed true to the life he loved and consequently, his success and his fan base continued to swell. His passing leaves a void that will be difficult to fill in the entertainment world and more importantly, in our hearts.
Fins up.

WE PUT YOUR DREAMS FIRST
Barktoberfest’s Happy Howl-o-ween 2023
by Madeleine DavisHome is where the heart is, but for most of us, home is where our dog is. The Pensacola Humane Society is celebrating its 80th year of improving the lives of local pets during its annual October pet adoption event, Barktoberfest.
This pet-friendly adoption event offers members of the community a place to come together over their shared love for canines and felines alike.
Held in October each year, this community adoption event brings together animal welfare organizations from across the Gulf Coast in support of our local Humane Society.
This year’s Barktoberfest will be held Sunday, October 29 from 10 am to 4 pm at Seville Square located at 311 E. Government Street in
Drawing an estimated 4,000 attendees each year, this free community event brings together pets and pet owners, local businesses and other organizations in support of the Pensacola Humane Society's mission of helping animals in need.
The Pensacola Humane Society was originally founded in 1943 and became Pensacola’s first nokill shelter in 1985. It grew from a single employee shelter to an organization with a committed staff, volunteer group and multiple fundraising events to help spread their mission of helping suffering animals and making the city of Pensacola a nokill community through education and dedication.
If you’re interested in lending a helping paw, visit pensacolahumane.org to learn more about donating, volunteering and foster parenting opportunities.
Barktoberfest is expected to host a dozen local food trucks and a beverage booth, which will supply a variety of both adult and non-alcoholic beverages. You and your pet will find fun around every corner with special drinks and treats. Emerald Coast Utilities Authority will also be onsite with its mobile refillable water station that provides
clean water so Florida’s fur-ocious heat will not stop us from enjoying this once-a-year event.
This fun-filled day not only includes food and beverages for both you and your pet, but also a variety of fun contests where your furry friend can show off their Halloween costume and their super paw-ers by competing in the ulti-mutt costume contests for both small and large dogs, doggy doppelganger owner look-alike contests and many more. There will also be a yappy hour beer drinking contest for this festival’s Oktoberfest counterpart that provides a mutt-friendly brew so that you and your furry friend can indulge in this month’s festivities.
If competing is not your furbaby’s strong suit, there will be many other events to enjoy with man’s best friend such as paw-casso face painting, pup-arrazzi photo booth, bone appe-treat pool and more. Make sure to dial in to the Pensacola Police’s K-9 demonstration of an awmazing obstacle course. Attendees and their pooch will also get to participate in pet-friendly activities provided by Florida’s first-ever dog event company, Wolfgang.
The animals showcased at this event will be up for adoption through the Pensacola Humane Society, the Escambia County Animal Shelter and the Santa Rosa County Animal Shelter, so you may even get to bring home the purrrrfect friend. Typically, about half of the adoptable canines and felines end their spook-tacular day by being adopted by an attendee. So, if you meet your new furry roommate, visit one of the adoption tables to learn more about adoption opportunities. While admission is free, donations to the Humane Society are more than welcome.
Pups, bring your humans so you can both meet some new friends, try some tasty treats and rock some fan-favorite Barktoberfest merchandise sold at the festival.
Don’t forget to mark your calendar for the Humane Society’s fur-tastic event. Remember to keep all dogs on a leash for your pet’s and everyone else’s safety, and most importantly, make sure you have a bow-wow of a good time.
For complete event details and information on available volunteer opportunities, visit pensacolahumane.org or follow @pensacolahumane on social media.
Gulf Coast Fungi Festival
A Weekend of Mushroom-Centric Festivities
by Molly CallahanMark your calendars for this weekendlong festival celebrating the magic of coastal fungi. This mushroom-centric event will be held October 20 to 22 at the Weeks Bay Plantation in Fairhope, Alabama. The Gulf Coast Fungi Festival promises to be a great opportunity to explore the world of fungi.
Organized by mushroom educator, laboratory operator and the owner of Fungi Farm, Allen Carroll, expert mushroom forager and cultivator, Tanner Hammond, and the owners of Weeks Bay Plantation, the Fungi Festival promotes sustainability, local artists and businesses and eco-friendly practices all the while creating a weekend of educational experiences, fun, food and music for all guests to enjoy.
“We’ve been kicking around the idea of doing something like this for a few years,” Carroll said. “Several months ago, Tanner mentioned to me that he knew a good place to have an event like this. He had met the folks at Weeks Bay Plantation, and we talked
to them, and they were all about it, so we decided to go ahead and try to get it going. We built a website, and so far, we’re pretty pleased with how many people seem to want to be there.”
By design, the festival will offer plenty of learning opportunities. “We’re going to have a lot of education going on,” Carroll said. “Various experts will speak on different topics related to fungi and mushrooms including cooking, sustainability, agriculture and the medicinal qualities in mushrooms. There will be experts who are happy to educate and discuss all the emerging research.” Guests are guaranteed to leave the festival having learned something new about mushrooms.
In addition to the many culinary uses for mushrooms, Carrol says that some experts speaking at the festival will discuss the medicinal qualities in certain mushrooms. “There’s a lot of overlap there,” Carroll explained. “Healthy food is medicine. In addition to the health aspect of eating mushrooms, there
are certain mushrooms that contain medicinal compounds but are not suitable for cooking due to their flavor. There’s a lot of new research coming out, but we’re going to have somebody at the event who is actually teaching specifically about medicinal mushrooms.”
In addition to all the educational lectures, the festival will also have some hands-on activities, including cooking demonstrations where guests will be able to taste different kinds of mushroom dishes prepared by professional chefs. However, if you don’t like how mushrooms taste, they won’t be the only thing available to eat during the festival.
“There will be food trucks and food vendors there. Pretty much everybody that is involved with the festival is local,” Carroll said. “It’ll be a great opportunity to connect with a bunch of local businesses, learn more about mushrooms and just have a good time.”
Festival guests will also have the chance to participate in art workshops, watch live painting, experience live music and explore the various vendors related to the world of fungi. The festival is also family friendly. “Kids are welcome,” Carroll said. “It’ll be in a safe environment.”
Another notable activity for guests to partake in during the festival is the foraging tours. “We’ll have
leaders walk people out on the property to find mushrooms and plants and identify them,” Carroll said. “We’re going to do nighttime tours, too where we’ll take everybody out with a blacklight and find plants that fluoresce.”
The festival grounds also offer a campsite for camping if you want the complete out-in-nature experience for the weekend. RVs are allowed, but there are no sewer hookups, so it would be dry camping. There is also a lake on the property where guests can swim, paddle board and cool off after a full day of foraging and fungi festivities.
An entire festival revolving around mushrooms serves a purpose bigger than good food, art and music. “Really, it’s just to get awareness out about mushrooms,” Carroll said. “In addition to the culinary side of things, fungi play a super important role in nature. They build soil, and all plant-based life depends on healthy soil. That’s a big part of our event sustainability, eco-friendliness, and educating people on the greater importance of fungi in our ecosystem. Mushrooms are undervalued in North America.”
For more information about the guest speakers, festival rules or to purchase tickets online, visit gulfcoastfungifest.com. If you own a local mushroomrelated business, you can register online to be a vendor at the festival.

LOCAL CLINIC SPECIALIZES IN HOPE
In 2020 I was diagnosed with advanced stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma and went through months of radiation and chemo-therapy. I have to start by saying I feel blessed to still be here,” shares Sue M.
Chemotherapy can save lives And for that we are grateful
Unfortunately, it can also have a negative impact on your quality of life, even long after you’ve completed treatment While chemotherapy kills cancer cells, it doesn’t exactly discriminate between cancerous and healthy tissue Which is why 68% of individuals who undergo chemotherapy suffer damage to the delicate nerves in their hands and feet, known to the medical community as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy or CIPN
For some, those nerves will begin to heal and repair upon completion of chemo treatments, but a substantial number of people will continue to experience debilitating pain long after their cancer is gone. Described as burning, itching, pins and needles’ and ‘akin to walking on glass’, peripheral neuropathy pain is excruciating…until it isn’t. Peripheral neuropathy can be degenerative. In a glaring majority of patients, the nerves will eventually die and then the numbness sets in
“When my neuropathy got really bad, I could no longer go to the beach. I couldn’t feel my feet or legs. Between the sand moving beneath my feet and the waves, I would fall,” said Sue. “I’m a beach girl so it was really upsetting. A huge part of my life had been taken away.”
Sue’s other doctors and specialists told her that ‘there was no actual treatment or neuropathy’ and this was ‘just something you’re going to have to live with’.
Sue explains, “I was on medications that dulled the pain some and helped with the cramps but it wasn’t going to fix the problem. I thought I was going to have to be on these pills for the rest of my life.”
Her family and friends were familiar with her struggles, so she was beyond hopeful when her boss brought her an article featuring Dr. Rebecca Gibbons and Acupuncture & Wellness of Pensacola.
Sue explains, “I was on medications that dulled the pain some and helped with the cramps but it wasn’t going to fix the problem I thought I was going to have to be on these pills for the rest of my life ”
Dr. Gibbons has been successfully treating all variations of peripheral neuropathy, including CIPN, “We have treated hundreds of neuropathy cases in that time”, shares Dr. Gibbons. “And everyone comes to us with a similar story; that they’ve been everywhere else and have essentially given up hope, they tell us we are their last resort. That’s kind of how the community has come to know us - ‘the last resort with the best results.’”
Sue was no exception!
“I went through 3 months of treatment and could tell a huge difference in my hands and feet I remember the exact moment I knew the treatments were helping - I took a risk and went to the beach with my girlfriends I hadn’t walked into the water by myself in almost 3 years out of fear I might fall, but I walked into the waves, waded about came back out all by myself, without falling! It was a huge win for me” cried Sue. When asked what someone like Sue could expect out of their time at AWP, Dr Gibbons replied, “We do things a little differently here We design personalized treatment programs for each of our patients No two people are the same so why would we treat them as such? Obviously Dr. Gibbons starts with a foundation that’s two decades in the making but we consider a number of factors including the severity of their neuropathy, how long they’ve had it, what underlying issues or causes we’re up against and make adjustments based on our findings. Our tailored approach and attention to detailthat’s why we have an 80% success rate in treating neuropathy!”
If you’re living a life of suffering or if your pain has prevented you from doing the things you love with the people you love, if your doctor has told you there’s nothing else they can do, it’s time to visit Acupuncture & Wellness of Pensacola to learn more. AWP offers proven medical solutions for seemingly hopeless conditions like peripheral neuropathy!

MONDE Fall Fashion Event
Fighting Osteoarthritis Through Fashion
As a Friend of Foo participant, Scout Boutique will present the glamorous MONDE Fall Fashion Event on November 9. Featuring the hottest fashions of the fall season in a stunningly curated space, MONDE promises to entertain and inspire the fashionista in all of us.
Two talented women are the main forces behind MONDE— MONDE Committee Chair, Jenny Noonan, and MONDE Creative Director and owner of Scout Boutique, Julia Ussery. Noonan and Ussery played a large role in organizing the MODA fashion show during last year’s Foo Foo Fest, which benefited local nonprofit arts organization, Pensacola Opera. This year’s MONDE fashion show will benefit the Andrews Research & Education Foundation (AREF) and its fight against osteoarthritis.
Hosted at Vinyl Music Hall on November 9, MONDE will showcase the season’s popular pieces and looks, styled by Ussery and her Scout Boutique team. “The cues pertaining to all inspiration for this show came from the direction of fashion for Fall 2023,” Ussery said. “As we all know, fashion takes its direction from the art world and the times we are living in, and we are giving something new and fresh to all the viewers. It will be a very different show compared to last year. We have lots of surprises we are working on… can’t wait!”
Noonan also promises this year’s MONDE event will stand out, featuring a completely different look and feel than last year’s fashion show. “We believe fully in the element of surprise. We have completely switched up the theme— colors, the vibe, the layout everything is going to be different. You'll still be seeing the incredible styling done by Julia and her team, but the colors, textures and aesthetic are all different,” Noonan explained.
As for the meaning behind the name “MONDE,” Noonan explained that it means “world” in French. “MODA was an incredible show and the name and theme fit with what we did for the Opera (last year's beneficiary). This year, we felt like Andrews was something that people around the world know of, so ‘monde’ fit that perfectly.”
The decision to make AREF the beneficiary of the event stemmed from Noonan and Ussery’s time working in fashion in New York City. The two became familiar with
AREF’s president, Ashton Hayward, who also worked in the New York City fashion world. After learning more about the foundation, they knew that they wanted to support the work that AREF is doing.
“When we were approached about the fashion show, Jenny and Julia knew of the Foundation from our President, Ashton Hayward, and were interested in supporting Dr. Andrews and AREF because he is one of the top orthopedic surgeons in the country. Since their MONDE fashion show is meant to be an elevated, premier event, they wanted to partner with an organization equally as reputable and prestigious,” explained AREF’s Finance Director, Ellie Hartsfield.
All proceeds from the event directly support AREF in its fight against osteoarthritis. MONDE will be held at Vinyl Music hall located at 2 S. Palafox Street in downtown Pensacola. Doors open at 7 pm and the event kicks off at 7:30 pm. Attendees are also invited to stick around for a post-event party.

The Marzoni House
A Queen Anne Castle in Old East Hill
by Kelly OdenNestled in the heart of the historic Old East Hill Preservation District, the Marzoni House offers up a lovely example of Queen Anne Victorian elegance and a slice of Pensacola history. Originally built in 1890 by Louis D. Marzoni, chief lumber inspector for lumber tycoon Henry Baar, this one-
of-a-kind home exemplifies the quality materials and workmanship so often seen in homes from that era. In fact, The United States Department of the Interior placed the Marzoni House on the prestigious National Register of Historic Places in 2016, a testament to its superb craftsmanship, historic preservation and structural integrity.
Henry Baar and his lumber company were instrumental in shaping Pensacola's development, both via the much-needed lumber for building (and the jobs the lumber mill provided) and by way of more diplomatic channels. During the tumultuous times of the Spanish American War in 1898, the Baar residence played host to the Austrian/Hungarian Consulate, while the Marzoni House itself served as the Spanish Consulate—an interesting piece of history connected to this unique property.
Fast forward to 2014, and the Marzoni House stood at a crossroads, facing foreclosure and impending demolition. The porches were in a state of decay, and from the outside, the house seemed destined for the wrecking ball. However, as fate would have it, Bruce Block and Tony Rhodes ventured inside and instantly fell in love with home. Despite its need for extensive repairs and renovations, the allure of this stunning Queen Anne home was irresistible. With a passion for restoring historic properties and a wealth of remodeling and restoration expertise, Block and Rhodes embarked on a mission to resurrect this architectural treasure, breathing new life into its timeless beauty.
The estate, sprawling across 7,500 square feet, comprises two distinct buildings housing 14 bedrooms and 13.5 bathrooms. In 2014, the original main house underwent a meticulous restoration, preserving its character and charm. While previous owners introduced some modern conveniences by adding updated bathrooms, Block and Rhodes remained steadfast in their commitment to preserving the historical integrity of the home. A matching carriage house, artfully crafted to replicate the original, was completed in 2022. Today, both structures operate as a unique Airbnb experience, and the property has earned the distinction of a Five-Star Superhost.
Block and Rhodes didn't stop at the detailed restoration and addition of the carriage house. They extended their vision to include a heated, saltwater gunite pool with an attached infinity spa, nestled within a picturesque cobblestone courtyard adorned with lush, tropical landscaping—a true oasis of tranquility.
The original Queen Anne design exudes grandeur on three stories, boasting six suites and six and a half baths. The crown jewel is a suite within the cedarwalled turret, complimented by a fourth story loft.
The old-growth heart pine floors throughout the home were sourced from the Baar lumber yard and lend an enduring, historic charm to the interiors.
The matching carriage house addition expands the Airbnb potential and features seven rooms with luxurious ensuite baths, all with French doors overlooking the pool.
The kitchen is a chef’s dream with luxury finishes and top-tier appliances, including a Sub-Zero refrigerator, KitchenAid double ovens, a Wolf Gas Range, granite countertops and custom wood cabinets. Bespoke tile accents, a butcher block island and a custom vent hood contribute to the kitchen's overall charm.
Just off the kitchen, the unique indoor/outdoor veranda runs across the back wall. Created from the original back porch, the veranda boasts three sets of French doors that open to reveal the peaceful pool and patio.
The Marzoni House in Old East Hill Preservation District is not just a house, it also serves as a testament to the value of historic preservation an architectural gem lovingly restored by Block and Rhodes, ensuring its unique wonders continue to inspire generations to come.
The Marzoni house marks the 100th renovation project for Block and Rhodes. The couple has decided to place the property on the market and to pass the torch to the next caretaker, who, incidentally, will be only the sixth owner in the home’s 133-year history. For more information on the property, contact Cameron Weaver with Levin Rinke Realty at 850-287-7793.

Five Home Renovation Projects to Tackle This Fall
With lower temperatures and milder conditions, fall provides a perfect opportunity to tackle that home renovation to-do list. Whether you plan on making minor improvements or wholesale changes are on the horizon, taking on a few DIY projects can help you boost your home's curb appeal (and its value) while also prepping for colder weather in the days ahead.
Making investments now - like putting time and money toward long-term energy efficiency - can pay off down the road, whether you're planning for a potential sale or simply looking to get more enjoyment out of your home. Plus, many exterior upgrades can be completed by homeowners, meaning there's no need to hire a professional when it's time to give your home a refresh.
Beautify those dull areas, boost resale value and add comfort with these ideas from the experts at Westlake Royal Building Products, a manufacturer of high-quality, low-maintenance products designed to meet the specifications and needs of building professionals, homeowners, architects, engineers and distributors.
Add or Replace Shutters
As a classic exterior design element, shutters can add instant charm to your home. With a variety of materials and colors to choose from, you can add shutters that suit your style and budget to give your home a more polished look. If it's already adorned with shutters, consider updating them with newer styles for a fresh appearance.
Upgrade with Stone Veneer
Natural and textured home trends continue to rise, leading many building pros and homeowners to gravitate toward stone veneer, or manufactured stone, as it can replicate the look of real stone. The wide range of exterior and interior applications means you can add comfort, character and beauty while complementing your existing style. Consider an option like Versetta Stone from Westlake Royal Building Products, which offers homeowners an authentic, hand-crafted look in a panelized format that's easy to install with nails and screws. There's no need to paint, coat or seal once installed for a low-maintenance solution for accent walls, fireplaces, siding, entryways and walkways.
Refresh Porch Columns
Routine cleaning is one way to maintain porch columns, but if they're rotting or splitting, consider PVC porch column wraps for a visual transformation. Easy and often affordable, they're durable and decorative to fit existing columns or poles and can be painted to match your exterior color palette. They're resistant to pests, moisture and weather damage for long-lasting and nearly maintenance-free upgrades.
Invest in Insulated Siding
Good insulation is key to keeping your home warm, cozy and weather-proof during colder months. While there are many ways to upgrade the insulation of your house, some homeowners are turning to insulated siding for a long-term solution. Long-lasting, weather-proof, durable and aesthetically pleasing, CraneBoard Solid Core Siding from Westlake Royal Building Products offers a cost-efficient way to beat the cold. It's low maintenance, built to last and withstands temperature fluctuations and hurricane force winds for a highly functional option to keep cold out for years to come.
Update the Driveway
Whether you're looking to make some simple updates or it's time for a complete renovation, showing your driveway some love can significantly improve your home's curb appeal. Adding an address post with a hanging basket or planting trees, shrubbery or flowers along the sides lends immediate aesthetic improvement. For added low-light visibility and visual appeal, install lights along the perimeter to help the greenery stand out in the evening. If you're ready for a major overhaul, consider upgrading the driveway using cobblestone, pavers or stamped concrete.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR EYE-CATCHING AND PRACTICAL WAYS TO UPGRADE YOUR HOME? Consider investing in an outdoor renovation project! From installing or remodeling a patio to adding an outdoor fireplace, these outdoor projects can make your home an inviting space in which you and others will want to spend time.
To inspire and help you along your outdoor design journey, Belgard® - a leading provider of outdoor home products like pavers, retaining walls and other landscape features - offers five outdoor design inspirations you can implement in your next home improvement project.
1. Upgrade Your Patio
A patio or deck can be a wonderful addition to your home. It acts as an extension of your home and provides another livable space to relax and socialize with family and friends. You can even incorporate an outdoor dining area and workspace to create a multipurpose patio.
Whether you want to add a patio or upgrade your existing one, doing so also adds value to your home. According to the National Association of Realtors Research Group (NAR) 2023 Remodeling Impact Report, a
Boost Your Home Value with these Five Outdoor Project Upgrades
3. Add Shade Structures
new patio typically costs $10,000$10,500. However, homeowners that installed a patio recovered 95% of the value from the project. When designing your patio, consider using concrete pavers to incorporate textures and colors. Concrete pavers are a great way to complete the feel of your outdoor space and seamlessly blend the hardscapes in with the existing layout because they complement various design styles. They're also a great investment and have a life span of 30 to 100 years to withstand extreme weather and bear heavy weight.
2. Invest inLlandscaping
If you want to improve the appearance of your home and get an instant return on investment, upgrade your landscape. Not only does investing in landscaping enhance your home's curb appeal, but it also extends a warm invitation into your home for visitors.
The NAR report found that lining your walkway of pavers with plants, or adding in raised beds and shrubs, allowed homeowners to recover 104% of the project's cost. However, if you want to start small, adding flowering shrubs, shading trees or mulching are easy, costeffective ways to revive your yard.
During the warmer months, you'll want shade structures so you can get the most out of your outdoor space, no matter the temperature. Escape the heat by installing a pergola on your patio.
Pergolas are a popular option because homeowners can choose various materials, styles and colors to fit their layout. A well-designed pergola can boost property values and increase the usability of the backyard.
Decorate your pergola with sunblocking curtains and hanging plants to create the perfect private getaway in your backyard. For a more cost-effective option, a trellis with plants or greenery can provide both privacy and shade.
4. Install an Outdoor Kitchen
Outdoor kitchens are becoming increasingly popular with homeowners and potential buyers. They allow people to spend as much time outdoors as possible while entertaining and feeding guests. It also means that you don't heat up your house during the summer months.
Compared to other outdoor home improvement projects, outdoor kitchens offer a substantial return on investment. NARS found that homeowners recovered 100% of the cost of building an outdoor kitchen. The report also found that 99% of homeowners who added an outdoor kitchen felt a greater desire to be home and
71% felt an increased sense of enjoyment with their home.
Note: Ensure the kitchen is functional within your space and has shelter from rain or intense sun, so you have optimal time to utilize it throughout the year.
5. Incorporate a Fire Feature
Whether you choose a fireplace or pit, an outdoor fire feature will add value to your home and allow you to make memories with friends and family in a cozy environment huddled around whichever feature you choose.
Fire features also add 32% better functionality, livability and personality to your home and make your outdoor space more usable, so you can enjoy your outdoor space during a brisk summer evening or in colder climates.
Consider your budget, space layout and function for fire features to ensure you choose the right one for your backyard and family. A DIY fire pit is a great inexpensive option with versatile use and style. Opt for an outdoor fireplace if you're looking for a more premium option. It can double as a privacy wall and takes up less space than a typical fireplace.
Let these five outdoor renovation projects inspire you to upgrade your home, add value to your property and make your home a place you and others want to spend their time. For more outdoor design inspiration, visit Belgard.com.

Six Key Steps for Planning a Kitchen Remodel
DESIGNING YOUR DREAM KITCHEN IS AN EXCITING ENDEAVOR, but it requires careful planning and consideration. Follow these six essential steps to ensure you create a kitchen that perfectly fits your lifestyle and needs.
• Assess Your Lifestyle: Consider how you use your kitchen. Are you an avid cook? Is it a family gathering space? Do you often host large groups? Understanding your lifestyle will help guide your design choices.
• Evaluate Your Existing Kitchen: Take a close look at your current kitchen. Identify what you love and what needs improvement. Think about storage, prep surfaces, and any changes you want to make.
• Set Your Budget: Determine a realistic budget for your project. Prioritize your needs over wants, but leave room for upgrades and extra touches that catch your eye.
• Select the Right Professional: Trust the expertise of a professional who communicates well and understands your vision. A skilled designer can bring your ideas to life and guide you through the process.
• Plan Smartly: Measure your kitchen's size and consider infrastructure concerns like electrical and plumbing. Focus on workflow and customize storage solutions to fit your family's daily living.
• Avoid Common Mistakes: Stay away from overloading with cabinets, ensure sufficient counter space, and invest in quality materials for critical areas like cabinets and countertops.
Remember to be patient throughout the process and manage your expectations. Renovating can be stressful, but the end result will be worth it. Take your time and make thoughtful decisions, even if it means leaving some décor choices for later.
Finishing Touches for Your Dream Kitchen
To truly transform your kitchen, pay attention to these key finishing touches:
• Lighting: Mix different types of lighting for various purposes. Use ambient lighting for mood, task lighting for meal preparation, and decorative lighting for the island and dining table.
• Barstools: Select comfortable and stylish barstools, ensuring enough space between them for easy movement.
• Hardware: Choose cabinet and drawer knobs and pulls that match your kitchen's style and size.
• Sinks/Faucets: Consider modern features like pull-down spray nozzles, touchless or tap technology, and semiprofessional functionality for added convenience.
• Essentials: Install under-cabinet lighting for countertop work areas, backsplashes for the sink and range, and sufficient electrical outlets, including USB ports for family tech.
By following these steps and incorporating these finishing touches, you'll create a kitchen that not only looks stunning but also functions perfectly for your lifestyle. Remember to trust the professionals, plan meticulously, and invest in quality materials like Cambria to achieve the kitchen of your dreams.
