STAMPED Film Festival is returning to Pensacola for its eleventh year of celebrating LGBTQ+ art, representation in film and the sharing of queer stories.
Since 2012, STAMPED Film Festival has brought some of the best LGBTQ+ films to the Pensacola community. STAMPED began as a way to support LGBTQ+ individuals in the community and educate allies on how they can support and uplift their queer neighbors. The festival is still doing so today, but on a much larger scale. 2023’s STAMPED Film Festival will take place from September 28 to October 1 and is set to be the largest one yet.
“STAMPED LGBQTIA+ Film Festival brings the community together through the art of storytelling, and that includes an array of people, from LGBTQIA+ vendors and businesses to local and visiting members of the queer community,” STAMPED President, Sid Williams-Heath said. “Going into STAMPED’s 11th year, it’s crazy to see the growth of both the festival and Pensacola’s LGBQTIA+ community over the last decade. Having a consistent representation and celebration of LGBTQIA+ stories has really boosted Pensacola as a queer-friendly destination, and STAMPED has grown to be a resource in the community.”
Though the festival is only about a decade old, STAMPED gets its name from events that occurred almost three decades ago. The festival’s name stems from local LGBTQ+ history. Memorial Day Weekend has always been a popular time for both LGBTQ+ tourists and locals alike to come to Pensacola Beach and celebrate. In the mid1990s, several local business owners and officials opposed LGBTQ+ tourists. So, when Memorial Day Weekend came around, LGBTQ+ beachgoers decided to stamp their cash with the words “Gay Money” or with a pink triangle to show the city and businesses just how much that community members were contributing to the local economy—$25 million a year.
STAMPED Film Festival adopted the name “STAMPED” to pay homage to these events, and because it is the festival’s goal to raise awareness for the LGBTQ+ community, just like the tourists did back in the 90s. As posted on the festival’s website, STAMPED’s mission is to provide “a vibrant cultural experience to Pensacola by using the unique expression of films with a specific focus on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community to foster aware-
ness, inclusion, and diversity.”
This year’s STAMPED schedule will be chock-full of films that focus on the LGBTQ+ community and their experiences. The festival shows a variety of films from many different genres. STAMPED also awards the best film from several categories. Some of the categories up for grabs in previous years include Best Documentary Feature Film, Best Animated Film, Best Narrative Short Film and Best Narrative Feature Film.
Due to the overwhelming amount of submissions, films are still being reviewed and the full festival lineup is not out yet, but will be available shortly. “We’re still finalizing the final rundown after being inundated with absolutely fantastic submissions this year. It’s gotten so expansive that STAMPED has actually brought on a professional filmmaker and festival expert, Chris McNeany, to help curate the final selections. In general, you can expect Friday evening, all day Saturday, and Sunday afternoon to be jam-packed,” Williams-Heath exclaimed.
One aspect of the festival that is already confirmed on the schedule to return this year is Sunday as “Family Day.” Family Day offers something for every member of the family; it provides parents of LGBTQ+ youth with opportunities to learn about how they can best support their children, and it provides kids the opportunity to get creative and engage with the arts.
“Each closing day of the festival has become a day dedicated
to films for all ages, and through the wonderful support of Sunday’s Child this year, we are expanding that programming. You can expect children’s films, improv workshops, story time, and a colorful lineup of supplemental programs, while also incorporating new activities for adults to enjoy simultaneously,” Williams-Heath said.
There will be a panel of notable queer parents for the adults to hear and learn from. One of the parents that will be on the panel is Jake Graf, who is a well-known transgender father and the filmmaker of Our Baby: A Modern Miracle, which will also be shown at the festival.
STAMPED encourages everyone to participate in the festival, whether they are LGBTQ+ or not. “Knowledge is power, and while it is so lovely to see someone on the silver screen that looks and loves like you do, it’s often even more powerful to experience and celebrate someone else’s story who doesn’t look or love like you,” Williams-Heath said. “That’s what all attendees can take away from the festival: an opportunity to share in someone else’s story—to witness it firsthand through stunning internationally-submitted filmmaking—and leave feeling validated and educated on how others can love differently than you.”
The Pensacola community has been receptive and supportive of STAMPED over the years. Visit Pensacola reported that 2019’s festival attracted nearly 700 total attendees, with around 15 percent of those attendees coming from out-of-town
specifically to attend the festival.
As a nonprofit, STAMPED is able to exist and keep festival admission free of charge because of this community support. STAMPED also hosts a kickoff celebration every year for sponsors who make a donation of $100 or more to the festival.
“STAMPED is and only can be free to the public because of the community’s generosity in supporting our nonprofit,” Williams-Heath said.
“I’m grateful for how well the festival is received. Our reputation as a free, inclusive opportunity in the
community has grown, and we’re always so moved at the wonderful feedback we receive from attendees on how much the festival has meant to them.”
STAMPED Film Festival is hosted at The Clark Family Cultural Center, located at 400 S Jefferson Street in Downtown Pensacola. STAMPED can be found on Instagram and Facebook at @StampedFilmFestival.

With hundreds of children in the community battling cancer at any given time, Kia Autosport is committed to donating a portion of September proceeds to Rally, from every car sold during the month. In addition, throughout September, Kia will host a CHANGE collection drive at the dealership, encouraging customers and visitors to contribute to the cause. No donation is too big or too small.

Our commitment is rooted in the belief that ‘NO KID RIDES ALONE,’ and together, with our collective efforts from car sales to change collections, we will make a difference!”
To make an even further impact and for those unable to visit the showroom, Kia will have a link on the website for direct donations to Rally. Donate to Rally through Kia Autosport to be part of Kia’s NO KID RIDES ALONE initiative.
“We are so grateful for Kia and their continued support of Rally”, said Haley Brown, Programs coordinator at Rally Gulf Coast. “Every day In America, 47 new families hear the words ‘your child has cancer’, and every day those families ask the doctors the same question ‘what are you going to do to make my baby better’? Thanks to community partners like Kia, Rally is able to fund the safest and best research for kids with cancer, while also providing the local families with resources right here at home”, said Brown.
“We are incredibly proud to be collaborating with Rally” adds Jessica Lee. “Together, we aim to raise awareness, provide assistance, and create a network of support that will make a meaningful impact on the lives of children and families diagnosed with childhood cancer.”

Night Moves Fest will bring headliner Manchester Orchestra to the Hunter Amphitheater Nov. 4. The band has cultivated a large following in the U.S., UK and around the world.
The show is presented as a part of Pensacola Foo Foo Fest’s 10-year anniversary. Organizer Robert Goodspeed said bringing the community together was a top priority for Night Moves and the bands.
“As we were working on the lineup for this music festival, our neighbors in Florida were being impacted by this powerful hurricane,” said Goodspeed. “I knew right away we could help. I got together with Andy Prince of Manchester Orchestra and he was all in — the timing is perfect. Every band that’s playing this festival and every person who attends will have a part in lifting up the Big Bend community.”
A portion of every ticket sold will go to Second Harvest of the Big Bend, a non-profit who is providing food for the people of that area. In addition, anyone can directly provide hurricane relief by visting Second Harvest of the Big Bend at fightinghunger.org.
Prince, a native Pensacolian and bass player for Manchester Orchestra, said the Pensacola community understands what it takes to recover from a hurricane.
“In 2004, Hurricane Ivan destroyed my home and most of my belongings so this is personal,” said Prince. “Pensacola has been through this many times before and we know you can’t recover from a major storm alone. It takes everyone doing what they can to help in the long process of rebuilding homes and lives and hope. We want to be a part of that.”

TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet next week could approve spending more than $141 million to conserve 42,000 acres of land from the Panhandle to the Devil’s Garden area southwest of Lake Okeechobee.
During a telephone meeting Monday, DeSantis and the Cabinet will consider three land purchases through the Florida Florida program, including a deal with one of the largest citrus growers in the nation. Also, DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody, Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson and state Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis will consider purchasing three conservation easements to help preserve land from development.
The most-expensive deal would use $77.6 million in Florida Forever money to acquire 17,229 acres from Alico, Inc. in Hendry County as part of what is known as the Devil’s Garden Florida Forever project. While Alico is a huge citrus grower, the targeted land is used primarily for cattle grazing, according to a staff analysis of the proposal.
The Devil’s Garden project includes 82,995 acres in Hendry and Collier counties, with the staff analysis saying, in part, that the Big Cypress National Preserve depends on water supplied from the area. Nearly 52,000 acres have already been acquired or are under purchase agreements.
DeSantis and the Cabinet also will consider spending $26.65 million for a conservation easement on 8,881 acres owned by Adams Ranch along the south shore of Lake Marian in Osceola County. Conservation easements typically restrict future
A state appeals court Wednesday overturned a ruling that R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. should pay $2 million in punitive damages in a case involving a smoker who suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Lloyd Spurlock filed the lawsuit in Palm Beach County and made a series of allegations against R.J. Reynolds because of the smoking-related illness. Spurlock died amid the lawsuit, with his wife substituted as the plaintiff, according to Wednesday’s ruling by a panel of the 4th District Court of Appeal. A jury ultimately awarded $540,915 in compensatory damages and $2 million in punitive damages. But R.J. Reynolds argued in the appeal that the jury was improperly allowed to consider a conspiracy allegation in awarding punitive damages. A judge issued what is known as a directed verdict in favor of R.J. Reynolds on the allegation of
In what was already planned to be an abbreviated week of meetings, only three House subcommittees will convene Tuesday as lawmakers begin preparing for the 2024 legislative session. A calendar posted on the House website showed that eight other subcommittees will not meet after time slots had been set aside for them. The panels that will meet are the House Children, Families & Seniors Subcommittee, which will receive presentations about a 2022 law related to “responsible fatherhood;” the House Water Quality, Supply & Treatment Subcommittee, which will receive presentations about
claims and damages continued to increase. Data posted on the state Office of Insurance Regulation website showed estimated insured losses of $168.59 million, based on 18,353 reported claims. As a comparison, that was up from $156.4 million in estimated insured losses Sunday,
development while allowing landowners to continue using land for such things as agriculture.
Money for the deal would come through the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Rural and Family Lands Protection Program. Adams Ranch is a cattle operation headquartered in Fort Pierce.
In another conservation-easement deal, DeSantis and the Cabinet would spend $8.25 million to preserve 4,808 acres in northern Leon County. The Gem Land Company property is part of the Red Hills Conservation Florida Forever project.
Terms of the deal would allow eight residential areas on the property, with each having one home and related outbuildings. Also, two structures could be built in an area known as Foshalee Slough for hunting and fishing.
Also, DeSantis and the Cabinet will consider using $10.1 million in Rural and Family Lands program money for a conservation easement on 4,490 acres of the Buck Island Ranch in Highlands County.
The other Florida Forever proposals call for spending $5.4 million to acquire 1,546 acres between Blackwater River State Forest and the Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Santa Rosa County and $13.4 million for 5,454 acres that are part of what is known as the Natural Bridge Timberlands project along the border of Leon and Jefferson counties.
The site southeast of Tallahassee borders the Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park and, a staff analysis said, protects the St. Marks River and natural springs.
Staff members recommended approval of all six proposals.
conspiracy to commit fraud by concealment. The appeals court agreed that the circuit judge had improperly allowed evidence related to the conspiracy claim in determining punitive damages and that a new proceeding should be held. “The trial court allowed the jury to consider evidence of the conspiracy in determining both the entitlement to, and amount of, punitive damages even though the trial court ultimately determined the conspiracy did not cause the decedent’s injury as a matter of law,” said the panel ruling, written by Judge Melanie May and joined by Judges Cory Ciklin and Ed Artau. “In its closing argument, the plaintiff repeatedly emphasized the conspiracy evidence and urged the jury to award punitive damages. The plaintiff’s counsel told the jurors they should consider conspiratorial conduct in deciding entitlement to punitive damages. In short, a reasonable probability exists that the jury awarded punitive damages because it considered the conspiracy evidence when determining punitive damages.”
TALLAHASSEE — Florida is urging a federal appeals court to clear the way for a new law preventing transgender minors from receiving puberty blockers and hormone therapy, citing a decision last month in a “virtually identical case” from Alabama.
Attorneys for Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo and state medical boards last week filed a 50-page brief arguing the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals should overturn a preliminary injunction that U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle issued in June against the law and related rules.
A key issue in the state’s brief is a decision issued last month by a three-judge panel of the Atlanta-based appeals court in what Florida attorneys described as “a virtually identical case with a virtually identical law in the exact same procedural posture” from Alabama.
In that case, the panel rejected a preliminary injunction that a district judge had issued against an Alabama ban on puberty blockers and hormone therapy for minors seeking treatment for gender dysphoria.
Florida contends that such treatments are unproven and risky for minors — despite support for the treatments from major medical organizations.
“The challenged laws turn on a medical diagnosis, not sex and not transgender status. The state has a compelling governmental interest in protecting its citizens from risky medical procedures for the treatment of a difficult-todiagnose condition where there is ‘uncertainty regarding benefits’ of the treatments, serious ‘irreversible effects’ from the treatment like sterility, and a host of unknowns like the effects on cognition,” Florida attorneys wrote, partially quoting from the ruling in the Alabama case, known as Eknes-Tucker v. Governor of the State of Alabama.
The potential effects of the Alabama decision were evident in a separate ruling that Hinkle issued Monday denying a preliminary injunction against part of the Florida law that makes it more difficult for transgender adults to access hormone therapy and surgeries.
While Hinkle gave other reasons for denying the preliminary injunction, he noted, “The plaintiffs’ likelihood of success on the merits is significantly lower now than it was prior to Eknes-Tucker v. Governor of Alabama.”
The 11th Circuit hears cases from Florida, Alabama and Georgia, with many of its rulings setting precedents for judges in those states.
Amid politically charged debates across the country about transgender issues, Florida’s Republican-controlled Legislature and Gov. Ron DeSantis this spring approved the law blocking puberty blockers and hormone therapy for minors. The move effectively enshrined in law rules that had been passed earlier by the Florida Board of Medicine and the Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
The law included an exception for minors already receiving the treatments, but it also imposed new requirements on transgender adults seeking hormone therapy and surgeries. As examples, it requires adults to sign informed-consent forms and only allows physicians — not nurse practitioners — to order hormone therapy.
National groups and law firms filed the lawsuit on behalf of several plaintiffs, including children and their parents, and named as defendants Ladapo and the Board of Medicine and Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
In his June decision issuing a preliminary injunction on the treatment issue for children, Hinkle wrote that the “statute and the rules were an exercise in politics, not good medicine.”
“The statute and rules at issue were motivated in substantial part by the plainly illegitimate purposes of disapproving transgender status and discouraging individuals from pursuing their honest gender identities. This was purposeful discrimination against transgenders,” Hinkle wrote.
But in the brief last week, the state’s attorneys argued that the preliminary injunction should be rejected — just like the Alabama injunction was rejected. In addition to citing the Alabama case, they pointed to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year that overturned Roe v. Wade and left abortion decisions up to states.
“The district court … recognized a protected right because it believed that the treatments at issue are beneficial and adequate. But the district court failed to acknowledge that the state gets to make decisions about the appropriateness of medical treatments,” the brief said, citing the U.S. Supreme Court abortion decision.
The brief also said the plaintiffs and Hinkle had not cited “any evidence — none whatsoever — to demonstrate the deep rootedness of a parental right to obtain puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to treat their children’s gender dysphoria. No statutes, no common-law cases, nothing was assembled to demonstrate this.”
Lawyers for the Florida plaintiffs have not filed a brief at the appeals court.
But attorneys for plaintiffs in the Alabama lawsuit on Monday asked the full appeals court to take up that case, a request known as seeking an “en banc” hearing. They pointed, in part, to rights of parents to make medical decisions for their children.
“This panel’s holding that parents have no constitutionally protected interest in making medical decisions for their children runs counter to ordinary citizens’ most deep-seated expectations and leaves millions of parents vulnerable to laws, policies and bureaucratic decisions that dictate what medical care their children may receive,” the attorneys in the Alabama case wrote.

wetlands and mitigation banking; and the House Transportation & Modals Subcommittee, which will receive a presentation from the Florida Transportation Commission, according to the calendar. A schedule posted earlier indicated that meetings would only be held Tuesday — and not on other days next week. A ceremony will be held Monday, however, to formally designate Rep. Daniel Perez, R-Miami, as the next House speaker. Perez will become speaker after the November 2024 elections, succeeding Speaker Paul Renner, R-Palm Coast. The Senate will not hold meetings next week. Both chambers will hold a series of committee weeks in October, November and December in advance of the session, which will start Jan. 9.
based on 17,472 claims. The Tuesday data included 12,622 claims for residential property damage, with other claims for such things as auto damage. The data also showed that 2,491 claims had been closed with payments, while 2,131 had been closed without payments. Meanwhile, Craig Sakraida, a Citizens Property Insurance Corp. vice president, said Tuesday that the state insurer had received “a little over” 2,000 claims from Idalia, which made landfall Aug. 30 in the Keaton Beach area of Taylor County before crossing through parts of rural North Florida.
TALLAHASSEE — Continuing a longrunning clash with federal health officials, Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration on Wednesday recommended that people under age 65 not receive newly approved COVID-19 booster shots.
State Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo issued guidance that was dramatically different from a recommendation Tuesday by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which said people 6 months old and older should receive updated COVID-19 vaccines. The CDC recommendation came a day after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved use of vaccines that it said are “formulated to more closely target currently circulating variants.”
The Florida Department of Health guidance, however, said “the most recent booster approval was granted in the absence of any meaningful booster-specific clinical trial data performed in humans.” It also contended that the “federal government has failed to provide sufficient data to support the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines.”
“Based on the high rate of global immunity and currently available data, the State Surgeon General recommends against the COVID-19 booster for individuals under 65,” the guidance said. “Individuals 65 and older should discuss this information with their health care provider, including potential concerns outlined in this guidance.”
Ladapo, who appeared Wednesday with DeSantis to discuss the issue and heads
the Department of Health, has become a nationally prominent skeptic of COVID-19 vaccines and federal policies dealing with the pandemic. DeSantis also has made opposition to such measures as mask requirements and lockdowns a signature political issue as he runs for president.
But federal officials are touting the updated vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna that are expected to become available this week.
“The FDA is confident in the safety and effectiveness of these updated vaccines, and the agency’s benefit-risk assessment demonstrates that the benefits of these vaccines for individuals 6 months of age and older outweigh the risks,” the FDA said Monday in information posted on its website.
The CDC said Tuesday that vaccination is the best way to prevent against COVID19 hospitalizations and deaths and to help people reduce chances of suffering from what is known as “long COVID.”
“The virus that causes COVID-19 is always changing, and protection from COVID-19 vaccines declines over time,” the CDC said on its website. “Receiving an updated COVID-19 vaccine can restore protection and provide enhanced protection against the variants currently responsible for most infections and hospitalizations in the United States.”
As of Aug. 31, the most-recent data available, a reported 90,232 Florida residents had died of COVID-19 since the pandemic started in 2020, according to the state Department of Health. Nearly 78 percent of those deaths involved people age 65 or older.
