T
ITEN (Innovation, Technology, Entre preneurship and Network) WIRED Summit is the Southeast’s premier cyberse curity and IT (information technology) event of the season. Hosted annually by IT Gulf Coast, the event brings together hundreds of like-minded innovators, technologists, entrepreneurs, students and educators to share their expertise, exchange ideas and network over common interests.
ITEN WIRED Summit will return to the Hilton on Pensac ola Beach October 5 through 7, where leading industry experts and tech celebrities from across the region will present a crash course on the state of the tech scene.

The event showcases the latest trends and best practices in technology within a collab orative environment where local professionals and students are invited to ask questions, engage in activities and learn more about future careers in IT and cybersecurity.
The three-day summit will also highlight the area’s cyberse curity, information technology and entrepreneurial communi ties, while exploring emerging technology and some of the top innovators in start-up tech, artificial intelligence, robotics and other emerging trends and technologies occuring on the national level.
This collaborative tech community is what ITEN WIRED is all about, with the event name coming from the ITEN acronym, which stands for Innovation, Technology, Entrepreneurship and Network ing along the I-10 corridor.
INNOVATION: the act of devel oping a new method, idea, or product. Synonyms include transformation, metamorpho sis, and ingenuity. Innovation isn’t exclusive to technology and enterprise, but it’s no secret that these have taken massive
strides in the past decade.
The rate of new startups has skyrocketed across the coun try in the past few years, and here is no different. Many tech startups that have their roots here have grown into success ful businesses, alongside others with an established presence. In recent years, local success stories like AppRiver and Intel ligent Retinal Imaging Systems have made headlines by placing on prominent publications such as the Inc. 5000 ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies.
In addition, companies like Global Business Solutions, Inc. (GBSI), headquartered in Pensacola, Florida, provide both experienced cybersecurity professionals and resources to build incredible tech capabili ties for businesses and govern ment organizations alike. As a supporter and sponsor of this year’s ITEN WIRED Summit, GBSI will open their state-ofthe-art Security Operations Center located in downtown Pensacola to both attendees and local students for interactive cybersecurity exercises inside the GBSI Cyber Range.
TECHNOLOGY: a field perva sive across all industries, utiliz ing the newest developments of science and engineering to make processes faster, more efficient, and more effective. Technology has many forms and the power to revolutionize any industry.
Throughout the summit, attendees will hear from indus try experts and technology leaders from across the country representing a variety of indus tries from cybersecurity, health care technology and hospitality to government contracting and artificial intelligence. Each of these sectors are of major importance to the Southeast’s technology industries, which serves as a logistical hub and is home to critical government and military facilities, such as the Center for Information Warfare Training at NAS Pensacola Corry Station and the Depart ment of Homeland Security Network Operations Security Center.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP: a sense of pride in community and industry radiated by philan thropists and business starters. Entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of economic development, fuel ing the development of startups and the expansion of existing businesses.
The entrepreneurial spirit also continues to grow and live on in initiatives throughout the community. Leading the charge are groups such as Flor ida’s Great NorthWest Entrepre neurship & Innovation Council, which supports and convenes entrepreneurs throughout the Northwest corridor to share resources and programs for business success. The Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) of Florida, headquar tered out of Pensacola, also serves as a strong resource for individuals looking to turn their ideas and products – in technol ogy or other sectors – into a burgeoning business.
Pensacola is also home to a number of organizations that were purposely-built to serve as incubators business start ups, entrepreneurs and inno vators such as the CO:LAB incubator program operated by FloridaWest and supported by Pensacola State College; Jetty IoT, a private coworking space near downtown Pensacola and The Spring Entrepreneur Hub, located in the Studer Commu nity Institute building with the UWF Center for Cybersecu rity and SBDC Headquarters. The proximity to each other has enabled an environment of collaborative opportunities and resources unrivaled by other “tech hubs” across the country.
NETWORKING: an act of outreach to colleagues and strangers that drives the development of a community. Networking is foundational to the success of every career and business.
This year’s ITEN WIRED Summit will kick off on October 5 with a renewed and renamed Career Evolution Expo spon sored by Clark University where students, early professionals and seasoned experts will have the opportunity to network with companies looking to fill a wide range of open positions in cybersecurity and IT.

ITGC is the local trade association that backs and organizes the ITEN WIRED Summit each year. This asso ciation consists of a consortium of professionals serving as the core of the Planning Commit tee and utilizing Summit proceeds to award scholarships to deserving students pursuing careers in IT and cybersecurity in schools from New Orleans to Tallahassee.
ITGC also hosts various events for professionals in the Pensacola area throughout the year, featuring guest experts and apprentices from various IT backgrounds to learn and grow together.
The ITEN WIRED Planning Committee is also responsible for utilizing the proceeds from the annual summit to award scholarships to deserving IT and cybersecurity students throughout the Southeast. ITGC Membership provides local students and professionals with another avenue to collaborate with fellow techies and discover new opportunities to innovate.
ITGC members like Teri Haggerty, who serves on the ITEN WIRED planning committee, will bring valuable insight and training expertise through a series of breakout sessions about critical soft skills needed in the tech industry.
The list of notable speakers and companies in Northwest Florida extends much longer than any one article could cover, and ITEN WIRED is a premier event to get to know them all. All of these partnerships, events and the Summit itself culminate into a week that hoists the tech community high, proving why the Gulf Coast is growing into the next big national flashpoint for the continued tech revolution.
ITEN WIRED has come a long way in its 12 years, but there is still time to get in on the ground floor. Tickets can be purchased in advance up to the day of the conference or at the door, with discounts avail able for military and current students. For more informa tion on purchasing tickets for the Career Evolution Expo or for details on the Cyber Range exercise hosted by GBSI, visit itenwired.com.

STATE CLEARS WAY FOR JOBLESS BENEFITS
BY JIM TURNERTALLAHASSEE --- State officials have taken steps to make it easier for people in areas affected by Hurricane Ian to receive unemployment benefits, as recovery efforts from the massive storm continued Monday and the death toll mounted.
The state, in part, temporarily elimi nated what is known as a “waiting week” before unemployment benefits can be paid. Also, it removed a requirement that applicants contact five potential employ ers a week to keep unemployment bene fits flowing.

“There is no need for red tape in a time like this,” Department of Economic Opportunity Secretary Dane Eagle said Monday during a briefing at the state Emergency Operations Center in Talla hassee. “I know people personally back home who don’t even have a job to go to. The restaurant at the beach is completely gone.”
The changes apply to people in coun ties that are under a Federal Emer gency Management Agency disaster declaration. Those counties are Char lotte, Collier, DeSoto, Flagler, Hardee, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Orange, Osceola, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, Sara sota, Seminole, St. Johns and Volusia counties.
“We are working diligently to get High lands County and Lake County added to that declaration,” state Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie said Monday. “And we continue to have conversations with the federal agency regarding Monroe County.”
The briefing came as the state said
confirmed deaths stood at 58 from the Category 4 hurricane, which swept across the state after making landfall in Lee and Charlotte counties Wednes day. News reports, however, have put the number of deaths higher.
Meanwhile, more than 43,000 utility workers remained in the field restor ing electricity after it was knocked out across a large swath of the state.
Crews had restored power to more than 2 million residences, while another 621,000 remained in the dark, accord ing to the state Division of Emergency Management.
Guthrie said the goal is to have power back by Sunday to properties where “infrastructure is still standing.”
Guthrie also said Monday that searchand-rescue operations were moving into a more-thorough secondary phase.
“We are somewhat fairly confident that we have had people check every address,”
Guthrie said. “We’ve been to just about every address at least once and now the CFO’s office (state Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis’ office) with his (urban search and rescue) teams are going back and doing a second look at every single location.”
The federal disaster declaration, in part, enabled people who sustained damage in the storm to seek individual assistance through FEMA. More than 164,000 people, up from 119,000 on Sunday, had applied for the assistance, Guthrie said Monday.
Eagle, a former Florida House member who also worked as a commercial realestate broker in Lee County, said the state had not seen an uptick in unem ployment applications.

CRIST NEARS $1.96 MILLION IN WEEK
NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist collected nearly $1.96 million for his political committee and campaign account from Sept. 17 to Sept. 23, according to finance reports posted Monday on the state Division of Elec tions website. Crist raised $1,066,169 for the Friends of Charlie Crist commit tee, which had about $1.21 million on hand as of Sept. 23. Crist also collected $889,244 for his campaign account and had about $2.37 million on hand. Among contributions to the Crist committee during the period was $100,000 from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose finance reports were posted Friday, collected
$2.62 million for his political commit tee and campaign account from Sept. 17 to Sept. 23. The Friends of Ron DeSan tis committee had about $101 million in cash on hand as of Sept. 23. DeSan tis’ campaign account had about $9.22 million on hand.
BY JIM TURNERTALLAHASSEE --- As they begin to assess groves damaged by Hurricane Ian, Southwest Florida citrus growers are seeing conditions potentially worse than after Hurricane Irma, which played a key role in citrus production falling by more than one-third in 2017.
Matt Joyner, executive vice president and CEO of Florida Citrus Mutual, said Friday it might be more than a week before Ian’s impacts are fully known, as growers in DeSoto and Hardee counties still have fields underwater. But Joyner said some growers he’s talked with already “feel like this is going to be, for them, worse than Irma.”
“Folks are trying to get water off their trees to the extent that they can pump water off, although in a lot of instances there’s just no place to send it,” Joyner said from his home in Bartow. “And a lot are waiting for water to recede so that they can get out and do a more-thorough evaluation.”
From what Joyner has been able to see, trees have been stressed by the storm. “I’ve been out where I could ride and have seen quite a bit of fruit on the ground, standing water in groves,” Joyner said. “And then, you know I’ve seen some trees leaning, not as many fully pushed over. But I’m hearing from growers down south that have trees completely laying over. So, this is kind of going to be the whole gamut of damages it sounds like at this point.”
Fort Myers-based Alico, Inc., which has 48,900 acres of citrus groves in Char lotte, Collier, DeSoto, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands and Polk counties, said in a news release Friday that “initial obser vations include significant drop of fruit from trees” but that it did not experience significant flooding on its properties.
“As of the time of this press release, initial inspections indicate that substan tially all of our trees remain intact, with the exception of a single grove in Char lotte County that was in the direct path of the storm,” Alico said. “We believe this indicates that company-wide, the greater impact of the storm will be on produc tion in the current season, and possibly next season, rather than on long-term production.”
The company added that based “upon prior experience with serious storms of this nature, we expect it will take at least two seasons for the groves to recover to pre-hurricane production levels.”
Ian hit growers in the early stages of the 2022-2023 season. The first monthly forecast of the season from the U.S.
Department of Agriculture is set for Oct. 12.
The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences on Wednesday estimated that 375,000 acres of citrus groves could be affected by Ian, which made landfall Wednesday in Lee and Charlotte counties and then cut through the state.
Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried on Friday urged producers to report losses as soon as possible to U.S. Depart ment of Agriculture programs to get assistance and to maintain eligibility in crop-insurance programs.
Adding to the difficulties in assessing damage, Hardee County was close to 100 percent without electricity Friday morning, according to the state Division of Emergency Management. DeSoto County was about 80 percent without power.
The initial reports of heavy damage extended into Polk County, Joyner said. Further east, Indian River County and other citrus-growing counties have reported grapefruit on the ground, but otherwise conditions appear less dire, Joyner added.
“At this juncture, we’re cautiously opti mistic that it’s not going to be as severe,” Joyner said of groves in more-eastern areas. “It doesn’t sound like they got quite the rainfall that they had antici pated. And, so, I’m not hearing the horrible reports of standing water and flooding over on that river area at this point.”
Still, the initial reports aren’t good for an industry that during the 2021-2022 season had its lowest production in eight decades. Growers have struggled for years with a bacterial disease known as citrus greening. The industry also has faced increased labor costs, competition from foreign imports and damage from hurricanes such as Irma, which tore through major citrus-producing areas in September 2017.
Irma, which ran south to north through the state, was a major reason produc tion fell by 37 percent in the 2017-2018 growing season.
The state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services estimated Irma inflicted $2.5 billion in agriculture losses on Florida, of which $761 million was felt by the citrus industry.
Some of the losses were covered six months later through a nearly $90 billion federal disaster-relief measure that included $2.36 billion to assist the agriculture industry for losses from Irma, Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
FIRST IAN CLAIMS SHOW $474M IN LOSSES

NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
A first batch of insurance claims from Hurricane Ian showed nearly $474 million in estimated insured losses, according to data posted on the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation website. Insurers were required to begin submit ting claims data Friday and will continue submitting the information each day through Oct. 7. The first batch included 62,047 claims, with estimated losses totaling $473.828 million. The vast majority of the claims, 49,191, were for residential properties, while other types could include such things as autodamage claims. The data show about 1.1 percent of the claims had been closed, with 609 closed without payments and 48 closed with payments. The Category 4 Hurricane Ian made landfall Wednes day in Lee and Charlotte counties and then barreled across the state. It came

amid widespread financial problems in the state’s property-insurance indus try. Fitch Ratings said Thursday that an initial analysis indicated insured losses from the storm could range from $25 billion to $40 billion. DBRS Morn ingstar, another ratings agency, also released an estimate of $25 billion to $40 billion in insured losses Friday. “Claims arising from Ian will support the trend of property risk in Florida being more and more expensive and difficult to insure,” Patrick Douville, vice presi dent, insurance, for DBRS Morningstar said in a prepared statement. “Impacts of climate change, such as rising sea levels and coastal erosion, combined with high population and property value growth in coastal areas, will add to the existing woes of the Florida insurance market, which has seen multiple insurer failures in recent years.”
gas tax helps
NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
Florida’s tourism-marketing agency has paused advertising as it crafts a campaign to offset the negative images of washed-out communities and damaged bridges from Hurricane Ian. Visit Florida is finalizing a “recovery plan,” spokeswoman Leslie Pearsall said in an email. The pause came as tourist destinations in Central Florida have reopened after shutting down because of Ian, which made landfall Wednes day in Southwest Florida and then pounded Central Florida before exiting in the Atlantic Ocean. Visit Florida in the past has similarly worked to offset
negative media coverage from hurri canes and other issues such as the Zika virus and algae blooms. While the recov ery plan is devised, Pearsall said Visit Florida is also delaying the launch of its 2022 “Adventure Seekers Campaign.”
The annual campaign, started in 2018, targets travelers seeking “less-filtered outdoor and nature experiences.” The campaign, when eventually launched through social media and digital adver tising in travel publications, will target people in urban areas including, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia and Washing ton D.C.

State general revenue came in $20.4 million higher than anticipated in August. A report posted Friday by the Legislature’s Office of Economic & Demographic Research said the state collected nearly $3.44 billion in net general revenue during the month. The amount topped a projection that was made Aug. 16 by the state’s Revenue Estimating Conference. The confer ence, a panel of economists, meets periodically to revise tax projections. Before the Aug. 16 revisions, generalrevenue collections had been coming in up to 20 percent higher than projected. In the August revisions, the conference bumped up projected general revenue for the current 2022-2023 fiscal year
The
and the 2023-2024 year by about $5.3 billion. General revenue is made up of a series of types of taxes. The higher-thananticipated collections in August largely stemmed from insurance taxes, which came in $28.8 million over estimate. Sales-tax collections were $22.4 million less than anticipated. Economists also used the report to continue to warn about relatively low consumer savings. The personal-savings rate stood at 3.5 percent in August, down from 5 percent for June and July. Before the COVID19 pandemic, the rate in the 2018-2019 fiscal year stood at 7.9 percent. The rate ballooned to 33.7 percent in April 2020 as people cut back on spending and started receiving federal stimulus checks.
