Artist Profiles Conrad Armstrong
Sade English
Conrad is a multi disciplinary artist who uses visual, sound, word, sculpture and installation in his practice. Jake Chapman described Conrad as “one of the most exciting emerging arists in London, morphing images of bucolic beauty together with a disturbed dystopian vision.” Conrad has been mentored by renowned British artist Maggi Hambling CBE since he was 18. He also dropped out of Central Saint Martins and attended the Princes Drawing School in Shoreditch. His most recent work, displayed on London City Island was showcased in the Saatchi Gallery.
Formally introduced to the arts industry specialised in pattern cutting and Fashion design, Sade admits she never conformed to the programmed standards of design. After making the crucial choice to depart just two years into her degree, The Anticlone concept she is working on was born. Anticlone is captured throughout her works, her eye for detail and garment construction has become known as art itself; it has been described as ‘wearable art’. 2016 has been a fruitful year of growth for Sade English. She showed for two weeks at No Format Gallery, located at SFSA Studios which is also where her studio is based.
Mick Dean Marie-Louise Jones
Mick’s is last year’s Hackney WickED Art Prize Winner. Born in 1946 Mick first went to Art school in 1963, studying at Harrow school of Art. Mick subsequently graduated from The London College of Printing after studying photography and became a freelance advertising photographer. He spent 3 years at The City and Guilds School of Art, graduating with a 1st in Fine Art Painting. His final show was a sell out and he hasn’t looked back since. Working in central London for many of the prominent advertising agencies, he worked on some well known accounts including Benson and Hedges, Guinness, Danish Bacon and Walls ice cream. This led to becoming a TV commercials director, working in the UK, Europe and the USA. Mick now has a studio in Hackney Wick where he paints city scenes and waterways found throughout East London. Two of his paintings on display show views that can be seen from various locations on City Island.
Marie is a London-based artist whose work has been internationally exhibited with previous shows in Italy for the 56th Venice Biennale 2015, in Barcelona and artist residencies in Marseille, France and Essex, UK. Using mixed-media in the form of sculptures and installation her practice explores trauma, vulnerability, internal conflict and chaos. With her new body of work she attempts to give physical form to internal cognitive processes and defence mechanisms creating Structures of Being. ne of the works created for the series, CORE#1 was recently displayed and was the first sculpture to be installed inside London’s iconic Tower Bridge. The full series of sculptures, mixed-media drawings and limited edition prints of transient sculptural installations will premiere in London in 2017. More work from the artists can be found at unitG.london
Gillian Drinkwater Gillian’s carving are about learning and the physical, emotional and material responses to stone. When she is carving, her whole self is focused and responsive – drawing curves with her hands and in her head, bending to catch planes and lines, turning – these moves are reflected is some of the forms that emerge.
