ANNOUNCEMENTS

COMMUNITY COUNCIL

We have had our first meeting after Christmas and were happy to have 12 members of the public attend. We had a visit from Joan Mitchell and Graeme Mudie of North Fife Rotary Club who explained their aims in fund-raising and supporting local communities and deserving causes. We will take this on board and hope that perhaps they may be able to give some support to the young people’s village project and also the MUGA. Cllr Brett provided a report on the following items. The flooding near Hayston Farm entrance is being investigated to try and resolve this problem. The flooding on the Burnside Path is still under review by Scottish Water. We will report on this as soon as we have an answer. Some additional grit bins will be provided where possible. Potholes are once more becoming a problem. Transportation Dept are looking into a possible new system of filling the holes. Barrier repairs outside Balmullo Farm will require temporary traffic lights.

The Quarry Road sign will (hopefully) shortly be re -sited to the correct location. The planning application for lodges at Hillside Lucklawhill has been allowed subject to certain conditions. We are still awaiting a decision on the Pharmacy application. The lighting problem at Cupar swimming pool is still a serious issue. We are awaiting a report. Dog fouling around the school area is becoming serious. We are alerting the dog warden to see if something can be done. Our next meeting will be held in Burnside Hall on Monday 11th February at 7.30pm. please free to come and join us. A copy of the Minutes will be available on the shelves at the Post Office . Our next meeting is Monday 14th January 2013, hope to see you there.

EDITORIAL

INA CAMERON

Zoe & I attended the Police Forum on 8th January at the Leuchars Community centre. They are pleased to say the Speedwatch has produced some good results. A word of warning to all who use the road through St Michaels, they have handed out a large amount of speeding tickets in that area. They have managed to apprehend some of those responsible for throwing eggs at windows etc. What they have asked to be put in the Newsletter is that if you should be unfortunate enough to have eggs thrown at your car windscreen while driving take

care. Resist the urge to put on your wipers as this makes things much worse and you then have to stop and get out of your vehicle which is precisely what they want so that they can either steal your car or force you to hand over money. If you have anything you would like to appear in the Newsletter please send it to me via my email which you can be found on the Council Contact page.

Articles for the next newsletter should be sent to me by 11th February.

BOWLING CLUB There will be Prize Bingo at the Bowling Club on the following dates. It starts at 7.30pm, and everyone is welcome to come along. Dates are: - 15th February & 15th March.

THANK YOU SPAR BALMULLO Tayforth Veterans Project owes a debt of gratitude to our local Spar Store, and the customers in Balmullo. The Staff nominated us as their charity to the parent company C J Lang, Dundee and on Wednesday 16th Jan Gayle the manager and her area manager came to our unit in City Quay and presented us with a cheque for ÂŁ700. This was a large slice of the money they received from the sale of carrier bags for which they charge a levy of 2p per bag. The staff put up with endless banter from the charity founder and organiser Jim Reilly on a daily basis and no doubt this makes him easy to remember. So our thanks go to the central management of C J Lang and the staff and customers of the shop in Balmullo.

A big thank you to all.

LEUCHARS & DISTRICT GARDENING AND CRAFTS CLUB Our Christmas winter talk in December 2012 saw the return, by popular request, of the Alyson & Andy show. One of our largest-ever audiences of over 70 people were entertained by the skills of Alyson Christie and Andy Smith and their floral art designs. Each created 3 different designs of various shapes and colours, using a wide variety of colourful blooms and foliage. The themes were Winter and Christmas and some artificial decorations and lights added to the appeal of their excellent arrangements. These creations, together with some “prepared earlier”, were then raffled and eagerly collected by the lucky winners.

SENIOR CITIZENS I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people in Balmullo and the surrounding area who bought tickets for the Senior Citizens’ Christmas raffle, and also to everyone who donated prizes for the event. I was not there this year but as usual the Christmas dinner was a great success. The money goes to help for their trip in the summer and any money made at the Gala goes to

ANDREW FALCONER

The special raffle of a round of golf for 4 people at Elmwood Golf Course was drawn and won by Catherine Hannah of Balmullo. Our first winter talk for 2013 takes place on Thursday 14 February at 7:30 in Burnside Hall. The speaker is Colin McBeath who established Quercus Nursery within the walled garden at Rankeilour Estate near Springfield. Colin is a garden designer, landscape artist and plant grower, whose topic will be “Perennial Planting for Year-round Interest”. This is sure to be a very interesting and entertaining talk.

VAL PHILLIPS help with their Christmas dinner so your continued support will be very much appreciated. I am coming off the committee at the next AGM so if anyone would like to join the committee please come along to the AGM. The date will appear in the Newsletter Diary. Again many thanks to you all.......Val Phillips.

BALMULLO PRIMARY SCHOOL

Happy New Year from the staff and pupils at Balmullo Primary School! Thank You The school ended 2012 with a tremendous display of talent in our whole school production of Dick Whittington and it was lovely to hear so many positive comments about our young people who took part with enthusiasm and confidence. They certainly enjoyed the experience of performing for the local community. Volunteers The school itself is very much part of the community and we are very grateful to our volunteers who currently come into the school on a regular basis to support our children with a variety of activities including gardening, reading and library sessions. We are hoping that perhaps other members of the community who have an interest, a talent or a spare hour during the week would be willing to come into school and support our young people. In particular we would like to expand the range of lunchtime and after

ANNA COGGINS school clubs that we could offer the children. It would be lovely to have a school choir, a chess club, an art club and running club for example and we are certainly open to other suggestions. If you think you can help us, please ‘pop in’ for a chat, send an email or phone the school office. Many thanks. Renewable Energy Workshop Looking forward to the start of February, as part of Fife Economy Partnership’s Culture of Enterprise strategy, the Hydrogen Office Ltd will be delivering a bespoke full day workshop and competition for our Primary 7 pupils based around enterprise and renewable energy. The workshop will involve the children working in teams to learn about Fife’s role in the renewable energy sector, how the technologies work, the skills involved and how this will relate to jobs in the future, through hands-on interactive experiments. The pupils will then use their own knowledge and experiences to design a wind turbine jacket – the structures which hold up wind turbines out at sea. This is a fantastic opportunity for our older pupils and I hope that they will ‘share their learning’ with the community as part of an open afternoon event later in the term. Kind Regards Mrs Anna Coggins - (Acting) Headteacher

NEWS FROM CUPLAHILLS FARM

STEPHEN MELVILLE

Harvest was eventually gathered, dried, stored and much has been sold. As expected crop yields were well back on average. Our wheat yields were 35% lower than normal and spring barley and winter oilseed rape were both 20% lower. In reality we actually faired not too badly, as many others suffered significantly greater yield and quality penalties and in some cases failed to harvest crops. The higher market prices have helped to soften the effect of the lower yields.

Ash Die Back disease has hit the headlines this winter. The disease is already present in Fife and we continue to keep an eye on our woodland. Both Lucklaw and Willies Wood in particular have a high proportion of Ash and the onset of the disease could prove catastrophic to the stances. There is not a lot that the public can do to try and prevent the spread of the disease between forests, but please do not remove plant material (sticks, leaves or cuttings) from site and try to keep A thought must surely be spared for all those footware, buggies, bikes and cars clean before who endured the ordeal of trying to lift moving on or off different woodlands. potatoes from sodden, water logged fields. During February / March we will be planting Many farmers continue to suffer the difficulty trees and hedges around the new eco-cabin of lifting vegetables in ground conditions that site. Balmullo Primary are planning a visit to have never been seen before. The damage to assist with this and to find a home for the 60 or soil structure will take a long time to repair, so trees that they have been awarded as part equally the effect on machinery and labour of the green initiative they are involved with. If that works around the clock to guarantee anyone is keen to lend a hand with some fresh supplies, should not be forgotten. planting please feel free to get in touch. The wet weather continues to take its toll on the 2013 farming year. Many winter crops across the country have not been planted and some of those that were, may have to be resown. Winter ploughing, application of fertilisers, liming and weed control have all been affected to date. There will be a greater area of spring crops planted this year which will in turn affect overall productivity and farm profitability. In light of the above consumers can expect the price of many food items to remain high for the next year at least.

The Fife Fox Hounds unfortunately took it upon themselves to Hunt across the farm in mid January, despite being aware that we do not allow this at Cuplahills as their presence conflicts with our commitments to the farm livery, wildlife, community woodlands, popular walks and tourist accommodation. Hopefully there will not be a repeat of such an event. Our only agreement is that should the hounds accidently stray into Lucklaw Wood when hunting on the quarry Hill then the Huntsman can enter to retrieve them.

Wildlife & Woodlands

The RSPB undertook a bird survey on three dates through the year at Cuplahills. The results were very encouraging with healthy populations of many birds including high conservation species such as the tree sparrow, skylark, linnet, song thrush and sparrow.Hopefully the populations of these and other farmland birds present on the farm will continue to thrive upon our investment in wildlife habitats, corridors, woodlands, hedges and feeding sites. Don’t forget that it is the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch over the weekend of the 26-27th January. See the RSPB website for more information.

The fruit trees in Willies Wood were a disaster this year due to the lack of sun. The usual merry procession of fruit gathers from the village failed to materialise apart from the occasional lonely sole. Any intrepid walker that has braved the woodland through the winter will doubtless have been welcomed by the sea of mud and slippery paths, or during the festive period, a river of water running towards the pond. Needless to say there is not a lot we can do about this other than advise everyone to take care.

RAF LEUCHARS PERSONNEL RUN BERGATHON FOR ARBROATH CHARITY FUNDRAISERS Personnel from the Logistics Squadron at unanimous that we would fundraise RAF Leuchars have presented Arbroath for them.” charity fundraisers with over £800 in the The knowledge that they were raising funds shadow of the Spitfire kept at the airbase’s 1 for the charity also helped the Leuchars (F) Sqn premises following an endurance team persevere in the challenge and SAC challenge. Alan Leslie from Brechin said: The 6-strong team completed the TSW Bergathon, an annual event hosted by the Royal Air Force Tactical Supply Wing at the Swynerton Training Area in Stafforshire and consisting of military and civilian participants covering 3 x 10 km circuits against the clock in 3-man relay teams. In addition to the distance the challenge is to carry bergan back packs weighing at least 32 lbs and a rifle weighing 9 lbs throughout the course. During the rest period between circuits the teams also undertake target shooting with misses on the range adding penalties to the circuit times.

“The reason we as a group chose the charity Angus 4 Forces was because it was a charity close to home and was also for veterans. We raised a lot of money from the event and it was a good experience”.

The Leuchars team have strong personal links to Arbroath and the surrounding area and the Spitfire is representative of the bond between the town and the Royal Air Force formed when it funded its own “Red Lichtie” Spitfire during World War II. The choice of Angus 4 Forces Charity Ball as Caption L to R:SAC Mathew Pryce, SAC the beneficiary of funds raised was suggested James McCaffery, SAC James Hayward by Sgt Chris Jarret following a visit home to Arbroath. He met the chairman of the Charity Ball Committee, Chic Grant, and was impressed by the charity’s aim of raising funds for military charities by hosting a ball with a silent auction and raffle. The funds raised in 2012 were donated to the SSAFA Forces Help, Combat Stress, Scottish Veterans’ Residences and Commando 999. Sgt Jarret said: “To train for the bergathon, myself and a few other willing volunteers took to the countryside in the surrounding area of RAF Leuchars to pound out the miles while increasing both the weight and the miles week by week. During one of the runs I explained what the Angus 4 Forces Charity Ball does and the result was

FIFE THISTLE AFC The 2011-12 season ended up being one to forget for Fife Thistle as they suffered relegation for the first time in their history when results on the last day of the season saw them relegated to the Fife AFA Division Two alongside Auchtermuchty Bellvue. Thistles form through the season had been inconsistent at best with their home form in the league as good as the league winners, however it was their away form that was to do the damage with just one win on the road coming against Hearts of Beath who alongside St. Andrews University were involved in a four team battle against the drop. Cup form was not to be much better with early exits from the Scottish Cup and the Fife Cup and an equally poor showing in the domestic cups although they did come close to making the last four of the Wallace Wright Cup when they lost out on penalties to Buckhaven Town after a 3-3 draw. For the 2012-13 season Thistle had a shake up on the playing and coaching front with John Morris returning as Assistant Manager and Mark McShane and Gary Kirk coming in as coaches. On the playing side the average age of the squad was reduced considerably with the introduction of several players from the Madras school team as well as several new signings from other clubs. The new season started with the new style League Cup, however the form book continued for Thistle as they finished bottom of their four team group. On the plus side the Balmullo side were slowly beginning to gel and the league campaign got underway with a win away to Kirkcaldy Rovers then a defeat at home to Lomond United followed by a resounding 8-0 hammering of Bayside down

in Dunfermline as Thistle looked to have turned around their away form, but just as it looked as though they had they then suffered to away defeats at the hands of Auchtermuchty Bellvue and Leslie Hearts with Thistle on top in both games, but failing to turn possession into goals! November saw the return of Kieran Jukes to Thistle alongside former Raith Rovers youngster Riki Smith and their introduction coincided with Thistle finally hitting a run of form which sees them currently on a five game unbeaten run and joint top of the table having disposed of Glenrothes in the Challenge Cup with wins in league against Freuchie (H), Glenrothes Strollers (A), Bayside (H) with the only blip being a 2-2 draw at home to fellow table toppers Balgonie Scotia in a game that saw Thistle throw away a two goal lead. With two wins already under their belt in 2013 hopefully this year will be a much better year for the club on the park! For all the fixtures and results please visit www.fifethistle.co.uk
