LEUCHARS AND DISTRICT GARDENING AND CRAFTS CLUB
ANDREW FALCONER
LDGCC held their annual Autumn Flower Show on Saturday 26 October at Burnside Hall, Balmullo. Although the number of entries was down slightly on last year, both the large hall, with the chrysanthemums, cut flowers, pot plants, vegetables and craft classes and the small hall, with floral art, children’s and novice classes, were colourful and inviting. The judges were impressed with the high quality of the entries, especially in the pot plant, cut flowers and floral art sections. The vegetable sections were also well supported, with some superb carrots and potatoes in particular. As always, the children’s sections were popular and produced entries that were imaginative and of a high quality. The novice The show was closed by club chairman Gwenyth sections let younger or less experienced entrants Mitchell, who gave a general vote of thanks, show what they could achieve. particularly to Mrs. Pasley and the club committee, The prizes were presented by Life Member Mrs. but with a special mention for the additional Marjorie Pasley. Cup or Trophy winners were volunteers who helped to set up the show, stock David Scott, Neil Muirhead, Dr. Gillian Fyfe, Bill and run the cake & candy stall, serve refreshments Duff, Sophie Bell, Rebecca McQueen & Grace and clear the halls afterwards. McCandlish. Dairsie WRI narrowly beat Balmullo WRI. Other multiple winners included George Reid, Ann Duff, Andy Smith, Marjorie Pasley, William Loudon, Gordon Pasley, Elma Berry, Gwenyth Mitchell and Alison Jeffrey.
Overall, it was another successful village flower show, with the committee having a well-earned rest before starting again next year planning the Summer Flower Show.
Our most recent Winter talk was by local photographer Janice Dewar on Thursday 14 November. Janice gave us examples showing different horizon positions, use of a focal point, various angles, portrait or landscape, reflections and close-ups. She then treated us to a slide show of landscapes from all over Scotland and a selection of colourful flowers – thoroughly enjoyed by all. Our next winter talk is our ever-popular Christmas Floral Art demonstration with local expert Andy Smith on Thursday 12 December at 7:30pm in Burnside Hall. Andy’s arrangements will be included in the raffle drawn at the end and are always much sought-after prizes.

EDITORIAL As this is my first issue as Editor, I must begin by paying tribute to retiring Editor Ina Cameron, whom we are delighted to feature on the front cover. The whole Balmullo community owes a great deal to Ina, who has been the Newsletter Editor for over 20 years and has overseen several improvements to the format and presentation. Ina has spent many hours collating every issue, organising adverts, writing the editorial and summarising the announcements from the
ANDREW FALCONER Community Council. This time has been given freely and without complaint, despite her other “hobbies” like keeping hens and ducks and more recently looking after donkeys. She is maintaining her involvement by continuing to oversee the 200 Club for the time being. This lottery raises invaluable funds for community good causes, special projects and floral displays and it would be really helpful if more people could join or become collectors to assist Ina (see 200 Club News).

MARJORIE PASLEY
Method Heat the butter in a large pan and cook the onion, garlic and potatoes for 5 minutes until lightly golden. Add the leek and cayenne and cook for a further minute Add the stock, bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes until the potatoes are very soft and beginning to break up into the soup. Using a potato masher, roughly mash the potatoes into the soup. Stir in the chorizo and simmer gently for 5 minutes until the orange-coloured oil from the chorizo rises to the surface of the soup. Check the seasoning, ladle into bowls and garnish with a sprig of flat-leafed parsley. Serve with lots of crusty bread for mopping up.

NEW Married Couples Allowance Hot off the press From 6.4.15 married couples and civil partnerships will be able to transfer up to £1000 of their allowances to the other half.
Example; take a state pension age couple where one spouse has unused allowances. Then they will be able to transfer £1000 allowances to the spouse who does pay tax. This will save £200 IN real money. The same might apply to a couple where one works and the other stays at home, perhaps to look after children- tax saving £200.
Looks like it might apply where one spouse is a higher rate taxpayer too- tax saving £400 or £200 but I’m not sure about this one yet.
