EDITORIAL Summer has arrived! At least, June is the official start of the summer months for weather records but, as I write this, the sun is shining and it’s almost hot. We also had dry weather for the Balmullo Gala, which was great for the children, but spare a thought for the Gala Committee. The weather on the days before and after was decidedly showery which made the hard work of erecting and taking down all the marquees and tents feel harder. The Committee and all volunteers who helped deserve some real applause for all their efforts, including fund-raising events as well as the work at the weekend. Several residents have commented favourably on the colourful floral tubs and containers we’ve now planted up for summer – thanks for your support and encouragement. We would be pleased to
ANN RUSSELL
ANDREW FALCONER receive any ideas for use of different bedding plants to give more variety and style. Meanwhile, grateful thanks also to those residents around the village who help by watering and feeding the plants in containers near their home. Finally, it’s the AGM of Balmullo Community Council on 8th September. We are allowed up to 10 councillors drawn from the area of Balmullo, Lucklawhill and surrounding farms and cottages. Currently, we have 9 councillors with a good spread around the area – Lucklaw Road, Park View, Dunedin Park, Lomond Place, Picairn Drive, Inchlaw, McWalter’s Fields and Lucklawhill. It would be good to have another volunteer, particularly one of the younger residents. If there are more than 10 willing, the next formal election will be held in November 2014.

President Mrs. Ann Falconer welcomed members to the meeting on Thursday 5th June. The meeting took the form of an Inter-Institute Visit, with 4 members of Dairsie WRI providing a variety of entertainment. They brought along their “Dairsie Dazzler” handbook, which is a collection of recipes, household tips, gardening advice and a competition page. They challenged us with a musical quiz and then gave us an unusual craft demonstration. They rounded off their visit by making truffles from one of their recipes. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and Ann Falconer thanked our visitors for such a diverse and wellpresented evening. We also held our annual Bring and Buy Sale which was most successful and raised £63.50 for our funds. Thanks to all who contributed and bought items.

YOUR M.S.P. I hope you are all enjoying what is turning out to be a good Summer, so far, with plenty of good weather and a feast of sporting activities to keep everyone entertained including the World Cup and, soon, Wimbledon and the Commonwealth Games. A lot of excitement was generated a couple of weeks ago when the countdown to the referendum reached the 100 days point. After months of debate, the finishing line is nearly in sight although there are still many people who have yet to make up their minds. Not long after the 100 day point, the author J.K Rowling put pen to paper, once again, this time to make out a cheque to Better Together. The money offered was very similar to that donated by Colin and Chris Weir to Yes Scotland, a few short months ago. Naturally, both campaigns were very grateful for the donations but there are, of course, a few people on both sides of the debate who are unhappy. The abuse that has been directed towards both sets of donors has been well documented and I would add my voice to the strong condemnation of anybody who has directed any personal abuse towards people connected to either of the campaigns (or, indeed, anybody who isn’t affiliated to the campaigns). The individuals responsible for such behaviour are right to be criticised for their infantile and, at times, distressing behaviour. The Weirs and Ms Rowling have been accused of many things since making their very sizeable donations – “mild” attacks such as “buying” a victory, being a “front” for a political party and of being “taken advantage” of. In addition, they were subjected to online attacks which were deeply unpleasant and which clearly constituted personal abuse. In what is an understandably heated debate about Scotland’s future, there is no time, or place, for personal attacks. Everybody, regardless of their opinions, background, social
ROD CAMPBELL
status or income, has a right to express themselves without fear of attack. Nevertheless, it is clear that many of the general public have engaged with the referendum in a way not seen in conventional politics in recent years. I hope that this engagement will continue after September, regardless of the outcome. Some have pointed to the re-birth of the public meeting as a positive sign from the referendum. Across the country, hundreds of such meetings have taken place in pubs, town halls and churches, for example, with hundreds of people regularly attending to hear the panellists, and each other’s, views on independence. In these public places, people’s views are listened to and debated. Not ridiculed or subjected to abuse, but questioned and respected. That is the right way to go about things and is exactly how the campaign should be conducted online, as well. There is not long left of the campaign but I hope the rest of the campaign is conducted fairly, and in good spirit, on both sides. Regardless of the result of 18 September we need to get on together, afterwards.

LETTER TO EDITOR Having attended every Gala (and sometimes participated) and spending money in most of the areas, I, along with some others, felt the content this year was not up to the usual standard. We are not knocking the committee who do a great job of organisation by giving their time and effort free. The weather was great and there did appear to be plenty of folk but somehow we felt some things
A BALMULLO RESIDENT were missing. Plenty of things for the smaller children but where was the sponge throwing stall and things like that children like to do? And what a miss the dog show was. Had great fun last year watching everything Sue Forrester managed to cram into the event. Sorry you were not there Sue – hopefully perhaps next year.....
Letters received are printed but do not necessarily reflect the views of Balmullo Community Council or its officers.
LETTER TO EDITOR Having only recently started walking my dog in Balmullo I was delighted to find the fabulous walk from Burnside Hall up to the fields. The grassed area by the hall is pristine and it was good to see poo bins and polite notices reminding walkers about cleaning up behind their dogs. However on going through the gate ( more nice notices) and walking alongside the fleece covered tattie field I was appalled to see at least three huge piles of

"I recently passed a parked car which had a sticker on the window reading ‘Proud to be a Scot, Delighted to be United’. It raised a smile as I seem to have had cause to make a number of speeches lately about just why it is that we are better off united. In June I gave the Lord Garden Memorial Lecture at Chatham House on Europe and Britain’s continued membership of the European Union. The gains made by UKIP in the European and local elections means that Europe will continue to be a hotly debated issue between now and the have been of great interest to all those Scottish General Election in 2 0 1 5 . companies which see potential in the Chinese market. This was well attended and supported and was a great two days in the park. Thank you Stevie Thaw and everyone who helped make the event a huge success. For once the weather was kind to the Balmullo Gala and we had a wonderful day, which the public appeared to enjoy. We had a host of attraction and our main event being 7 Staines Mountain Bike Display Team. Due to a variety of last minute cancellations of planned events, some improvisation had to take place at short notice. Over the weekend we had fantastic support from many people and businesses from around the village who were able to spare some of their time to help us give the village your Gala. The list is extremely long this year and I am sure each and everyone of you who gave up your time, know who you are and how appreciative the Gala Committee are of your efforts over the weekend. If you have a small business or
an organisation you would like to promote at a future Gala or if you have a suggestion on what they would like to see at the Gala in future years please feel free to let a committee member know or join us at a meeting sometime. I hope the village enjoyed the occasion, and we didn’t disturb the neighbours too much. This Gala Committee is made up of only 11 members, I hope the village has enjoyed the events that we have held this year. In order to continue to host these events and improve our events we are always on the look out for new volunteers. If you are interested in joining the committee and making a contribution then please get in touch and join us for a drink when our meetings resume for the Gala 2015. Without the support of volunteers the Balmullo Gala can not function. My thanks go to the committee for 2014, and all those who have supported us. We look forward to seeing you all again next time. It’s time for this Gala Committee to have a much needed rest after a busy year over the summer and be prepared to do it all again. balmullogala@hotmail.co.uk

BALMULLO PRIMARY SCHOOL The pupils and staff of Balmullo Primary School have completed another hardworking and enjoyable year. They certainly deserve their holiday!
ANNA COGGINS - ACTING HEADTEACHER now have a range of new playground equipment and games for all the children to enjoy. Next session we will be working with the Grounds for Learning team to promote ‘Natural Play’. This project seeks to engage children’s imagination by using everyday materials which in turn supports team building, sharing and turn taking skills. It is an exciting venture which we hope the children, staff and parents can all be a part of and experience the benefits.

A presentation on how lawns can be kept at their best. 9 April: Quiz Night.( back by popular demand ) A varied programme held in the Burnside Hall on Thursday evenings at 7.30 pm. Entrance £2.50 per person which includes a glass of wine or fruit juice. On a personal note I've had 2 problems this year so far, mice and irregular seed. As I said last month the first lot of Gladioli had been planted and a second would be planted later, well a mouse got there first and had a little snack of the sprouts. As they look like there are other sprouts they've been planted up and hopefully they will produce something, but as Rabbie wrote " the best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley" but, I widne be laith to chase thee wi' murd'ring prattle! Also some of the beetroot have come up very poorly although the seed were all from the same packet. Never mind there's always next year, change seed supplier and fit mouse protection! The sweetpeas are growing well and I'm looking forward to a good showing season and hope to lift the trophy at Dundee again this year.

PITTORMIE FRUIT FARM Berries are nearly here. This is the time of year where we see the fruits of our labours at Pittormie. Our season really begins in November when you will see my father and me in the fruit around Pittormie. We are cutting the strings which hold up all the cane fruits, take out the clips which hold up the wires and then pull all the wires out. December is spent cutting out all the old fruiting canes before we spend January tying up all the new fruiting canes before putting all the wires back in place. The cold days standing in the dreels “cutting out” seems like an age ago now that we are only a matter of weeks away from picking the Tay, tummel and raspberries. All the fruits are looking quite good mainly as a result of the mild spring. The blackcurrants which like a good cold winter are not quite so good while the gooseberries are looking bigger than average at the minute so fingers crossed this remains the case between now and picking.
LOCAL HISTORY
EUAN CAMERON We have some new fruits for this season including Sloes which probably won’t fruit this season, Jostaberries and Quince trees. These fruits have been requested by customers over the last year. As usual we will have a full range of the ordinary and not so ordinary fruits with 10 varieties of gooseberries, strawberries, raspberries, tay, logan and tummel berries, brambles, worcesterberries, jostaberries, red, black and white currants, pears, plums, apples and greengages, as well as all of our herbs, plants and vegetables. Our new chickens arrived recently and have started to lay their pullet eggs. We’ve even had a few double yolkers. There’s also been a few new ducks added to the family. If you’ve never had a fresh duck egg, I would highly recommend it!!!! Here’s hoping for a good summer and a good fruit season from all at Pittormie.
MARY REILLY
The parish of Leuchars has many connections with the Normans in Scotland. Though there was no Norman conquest of Scotland, they did through other means, by marriage and friendship, extend their influence north. The name St. Michaels is a strong hint that the Normans were in this area. As a race, they had a great respect for fighting men and so there was an affinity with the warrior archangel Michael, who reputedly utterly defeated Satan and sent him back to Hell.
English interests were in jeopardy. Robert’s son, Saier de Quincy, became Earl of Winchester in 1207 and, even though he had extensive lands in England, he took an active part in local matters. In the Registry of the Priory of St. Andrews and the Book of the Church of Scone there are records of charters, gifts and confirmations made by him. Like many of his contemporaries Saier went on Crusade but he died at Damietta without ever reaching Jerusalem.
This much is conjecture; but in the reign of William the Lion, King of Scots 1165-1214, we know that Robert de Quincy acquired the lands of Leuchars through his marriage to Arabella, a descendant of old Celtic aristocracy. Robert probably came to Scotland with William in 1175 when the king, who had been capture in battle, was released from captivity in England. Either Robert was genuinely a friend of the King of Scots or had been secretly commissioned by the English Government to keep an eye on affairs in Scotland and report back if he thought
He has a connection too with the Moultrie Burn which trickles through Balmullo. There seems to have been a port of sorts where the Moultrie joins the Eden. King John of England is recorded as having given permission to Saier, Lord of Leuchars Castle, to send a ship from “Locres in Scotland to Lynn” (now King’s Lynn). Even by his standards it must have been a small ship which would have hugged the coast and sailed only in daylight. Nevertheless, one can only respect the sailors who braved the North Sea from Fife to Norfolk in it.
