DEFIBRILLATOR FOR BALMULLO A defibrillator has now been installed at Pitcairn Surgery, in the case near the bottom corner of the wall facing the car park, as shown in the photo below. The case is unlocked but alarmed – helps to raise awareness of an emergency. The defibrillator, shown opposite, can be used in the event of apparent heart failure, but only after calling 999 for ambulance. When the green start button is pressed, the machine “talks” you through the procedure. After pulling out the pads and sticking them on the bare chest, as shown in the diagram, the machine will tell you to press the red “shock” button if it does not detect a heartbeat. It will then help you to give CPR chest compressions by checking that they are at the correct pressure and giving a timing signal like a metronome. After use, the machine must be serviced – contact any Community Councillor.

ANNOUNCEMENTS The defibrillator machine and display case for Balmullo, supplied by Heart Start, have now been installed at the Doctors’ Surgery in Pitcairn Drive next to the roundabout, with the agreement of Pitcairn Practice. Although the machine “talks” any user through the correct procedure, a training and awareness session will be organised as soon as possible.
BALMULLO COMMUNITY COUNCIL Changes have been proposed to replace the separate security-screened Balmullo Post Office counter with a new open retail counter in March. General services would be available during all shop hours, with a few services removed. We agreed to make objections on the grounds of lack of security & privacy and concerns about queues and untrained staff.

EDITORIAL Well, it’s getting noticeably lighter in the evenings and Winter will officially be over at the end of February. We’ve been lucky so far with weather, especially compared with the South of England – our commiserations to those affected by flooding. We depend on our Advertisers whose advert fees pay the majority of the cost of each issue, so many thanks for their support, especially those who are regulars. However, can I appeal to those of them reading this to settle any outstanding invoices. The printers have to be paid after each issue and we have limited funds to manage such debts. Our other main source of income is the 200 Club
ANDREW FALCONER and new members are very welcome (joining details elsewhere). We would appeal to all existing members to pay several months at a time (if not already doing so) and save the volunteer collectors from having to make a visit each month. We depend on these volunteers who do a great job and give of their own time every month – a big thank you to all of them. Finally, a further plea for more photos from around the area – we would love to feature more local photographers – many of you have smartphones so no excuse.
BURNSIDE HALL COMMITTEE MEETING - 5TH FEBRUARY 2014 A well-attended committee meeting opened with a talk on Fire Safety by local resident Mark Crush, Station Manager at Dundee West Fire Station. Mark gave an entertaining talk on a serious subject, using some of his experiences to illustrate the potential pitfalls of underestimating the need for a proper, detailed set of procedures for fire safety. He looked at the aspects particular to the situation of Burnside Hall, which is well equipped with fire equipment and emergency exits, but still needs regular checks and careful observance of the rules. Representatives of the organisations which use the Hall were able to ask questions and consider how best to apply fire safety procedures to their particular situation. The Hallkeeper reported further on issues around car parking, particularly on a Tuesday evening, where the early use by Brownies meant parents

The situation improved when she patrolled in a high-visibility jacket showing authority. Group representatives agreed to make sure their attendees were made aware of the need for consideration of others and we agreed to try out an arrangement of allocating specific areas of the car park for each group, also making use of the overflow area. The Scout Group reported that progress on the Climbing Wall was very limited, with the original contractor falling through and a new contractor not following up initial contact. The next meeting is on Wednesday 2nd April at 7.30 pm.

WORLD WAR 1 CENTENARY Like many others who served in World War One, my grandfather kept notes about his experiences. In this centenary year of the start of the ‘war to end all wars’ the following extracts from grandfather’s notebook which cover part of his voyage to Murmansk and the little known North Russia campaign, may serve as a reminder of the everyday life endured by those who served their country at that time. ‘An endeavour to get to Russia’ - L D Rennison: 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. ‘‘We set off from Mytchett Camp Oct 11th 1918, arrived at Dundee 12th. Four Explorers/Scouts are taking part in International events this year and next. Four have been selected to represent Burnside Explorer Unit at this year’s Blair Atholl Jamborette in July, and one of the attendees will be heading further afield in 2015 by attending the Scout World Jamboree in Japan. Blair Atholl 2014 will be the 34th Bi-annual event held in the grounds of Blair Atholl Castle. Around 1250 Scouts and Leaders attend, half of the Scouts are from Scottish Groups and the rest from overseas countries, they will camp together for 14 days under canvas, taking part in a vast array of activities from arts and crafts to overnight outdoor survival, with evening entertainment varying from discos to traditional camp fires. Going by the enthusiasm of previous attendees this is one of the high points of their time in Scouting with many still being in touch with friends they made at home and abroad. BALMULLO PRIMARY SCHOOL Nursery News We are currently planning to develop our outdoor nursery entrance at Balmullo Primary School in order to create a more stimulating and welcoming area for children and parents. Thanks to all who have contributed with ideas and comments so far. We are appealing now for some items to enhance our area. Can you help us? We are looking for outgrown, brightly coloured children’s wellies to use as planters, outdoor gloss paint (bright colours) and recycled materials which can be used for creating a music area e.g. items that can be used as drums chimes, shakers etc. If anyone has any plain wall tiles, white or cream preferably that we can use outdoors for decorating that would be great too! If you would like to hand in any items to nursery we would appreciate that. Please contact Mrs MacPherson at the nursery, (01334 659451) if you can help in any way with our project. Thank you.
MRS ANNA COGGINS the first Friday of each month after that (term time) This fun session will be led by a member of the health visiting team in conjunction with nursery staff.
