DUNNOCK & TREECREEPER

The reasons for featuring these 2 species together is that they are both fairly common, relatively easily seen around Balmullo, and haven’t been included in earlier issues. The Dunnock (Prunella modularis) is 13 – 14.5 cm in length, very similar in size to a Sparrow, and is found in gardens, woodland, heaths with gorse and thick shrubbery. The sexes are alike. It is rather like a House Sparrow with brown, streaked upperparts, but has definitive blue-grey head and breast. The legs are reddish-brown and the bill is dark grey, small and thin, showing that it is an insecteater. Dunnocks typically stay low down in or near cover and are generally shy birds. However, they have a clear, quite loud, song which is usually delivered when perched on top of a bush or hedge, allowing them to be seen more easily. There is a good population of Dunnocks in and around Balmullo, with many seen in our gardens and local woodland. The Treecreeper (Certhia familiaris) is of similar size at 12.5 – 14 cm long and breeds commonly in woodland, either deciduous or mixed, preferring denser patches. The sexes are alike and have

ANDREW FALCONER strongly patterned brown, buff and white backs and white undersides. The bill is fine, pointed and is slightly decurved (curved down) and the tail-feathers are stiff. The long claws and stiff tail help it to “creep” up tree trunks in a jerky motion, often spiralling around the trunk as it climbs (often likened to a mouse). It will typically climb up the bottom section of a tree then fly to a nearby tree and start again from the bottom, looking for insects amongst the tree bark, lichens and mosses. Treecreepers are very quiet and unobtrusive and have a high-pitched call and song which is difficult to hear. However, there is a good population in local mixed woodland and they can be seen with careful observation in this suitable habitat. Photos courtesy of John Anderson, Crail.

COUNCILLOR MARGARET TAYLOR HAPPY RETIRAL Maggie Taylor retired from Fife Council after representing the Tay Bridgehead ward for the past 17 years. For the majority of that time, Maggie has attended Balmullo Community Council monthly meetings to provide the liaison with Fife Council, letting us know what was happening that might affect Balmullo and reporting our issues and concerns to the appropriate department. With their help, Maggie has been able to resolve most of our problems effectively and in a timely manner. Diverse issues such as missing or broken toby covers, overgrown hedges, pavement repairs and provision of

additional grit bins were all dealt with positively. Some more permanent reminders of Maggie’s help are evident in the MUGA, the much-needed extra parking spaces in Burnside and the multi-tier floral planter at the north end of Main Street which was largely funded by a Fife Council grant expedited by Maggie. At her last meeting in April, we were delighted to present her with a gift voucher and a bouquet after a vote of thanks, as seen on the cover of this issue.

#BalmulloLife LEUCHARS AND DISTRICT GARDENING AND CRAFTS CLUB As I sit and type this, it has started to rain, at last! Although it is a weekend and a lot of people will be disappointed it has been needed as things were starting to suffer. So I'm taking this opportunity to do some Flower Show work. A small number of the classes and trophies are confined, that is the people who donated the trophies to the club wished them to be for locals to win. The confined area is a radius of 4 miles from the centre of Leuchars, so Balmullo is within this. Entries for the Gardens Competition and for the Flower Show prior to the show (entries for the show can be taken in the hall up to 9.30 am. on show day) should be given to me - Bill Duff, Secretary, 1b Smithy Road Balmullo Tel. 870787.

BILL DUFF

The Summer Show is as usual in the Burnside Hall and is on Saturday 5 Augustwith staging of exhibits from Friday 4 August 6.00 to 9.00 pm. and Saturday 7.30 to 9.45 am. when entries can also be taken. Along with the usual Flower Show classes there is an extensive Novice Section for beginners to try before entering the open classes. So if you would like to try showing but are a bit apprehensive come along with your produce and someone will be on hand to help you stage them, or have a chat with me before the show.

The Childrens Section has 3 grades, which have been changed this year to 6 years and under, 7 - 9 years, and 10 -12 years. The classes are the same for each grade: Miniature Garden in a seed tray. The Gardens Competition is on Saturday 22 July and Painted stone has classes for: A jar with posy of garden flowers. Vegetable Gardens, both confined and open. A monster made with vegetables. Hanging Basket or Pot. 2 Crispy cakes. Flower Garden. Photograph of your choice – unframed – 7" by 5". Landscaped Gardens, large and small. Beds of Onions from seed and sets. If there is anything you are interested in showing, Foliage or Floral Display utilising Containers. schedules are now available, give me a call, 870787, or These all being open to everyone. Gwenyth 870010. The judge is taken for lunch, so lets have lots of local entries and make him work for his lunch!

The Scottish Government is currently running a public consultation on unconventional oil and gas in Scotland. The consultation explores the evidence on the potential impacts of shale oil and gas, and coal bed methane, and the technologies involved in extraction, including hydraulic fracturing. The consultation can be read and responded to via the Scottish Government’s consultation platform, Citizen Space, at https:// consult.scotland.gov.uk/energy-and-climate-changedirectorate/fracking-unconventional-oil-and-gas/ Responses are invited by 31 May. A copy of the latest Emergency Resilience newsletter is available.

“I want to say thank you very much again to you all for the most wonderful bouquet of flowers and token which you gave me on my retiral from the Council. You have all been so kind to me and hopefully over the years I have been able to sort out most of the problems that Balmullo had, not that there were many! Balmullo is a wonderful village and full of so many nice people who are determined to keep the community spirit alive. It has been extremely humbling to listen to what people have said about me and how much they have appreciated what I have done.

We received this letter from Maggie Taylor –

Thank you and best wishes to you all, Maggie.”

THE BALMULLO SWI

JAN REDPATH

President, Ann Falconer, welcomed members, guests and Guest Speaker, Margaret Watson, to our meeting on Thursday, 6th April, 2017. Margaret, from Birchwood Cottage, Art Gallery and Tearoom, gave a most informative talk about the charity Mary’s Meals and also the work of Birchwood Cottage. Mary’s Meals is a charity which was founded by Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow from Argyll, in 2002, following previous visits and fundraising for war torn Bosnia-Herzegovina. When it first started, Mary’s Meals were providing just 200 meals a day to children. They now provide nearly 1.2 million children with nutritious meals daily in 14 countries. It costs just £13.90 to feed a child for a year, and for every £1 raised, a minimum of 93p goes towards their charitable activities, led by an army of volunteers. More information can be found at www.marysmeals.org All the profits from Birchwood Cottage Art Gallery and tea room are donated to Mary’s Meals and also Rachel House, Kinross. Birchwood also supports two schools in the provision of meals, one in Malawi and the other in Liberia. In the past four years, they have raised £50,000! The rural members and guests enjoyed a delicious

light supper prepared and served by the Committee Members, before the Raffle was drawn and competition winners announced. Due to the Local Elections using the Community Hall as a Polling Place on Thursday 4th May, members enjoyed a visit to Birchwood Cottage Gallery and Tea Room, St Andrews. After having a look around this hidden gem, and making some purchases, the ladies enjoyed some delicious home baking and hot drinks, whilst enjoying the views over St Andrews Bay. The gallery/tearoom donates all of its profits to charity, and over the past 4 years, has raised over £50,000 which has been sent to CHAS and Mary’s Meals. The next meeting will be an Inter Institute meeting with Bring and Buy Sale on Thursday, 1st June, 2017 at 7.15pm. Competitions Pot Holder – Sewn / 2 x Butterfly Cakes / Flower of the Month. As ever, new members will always be very welcome.

BIRD-LISTENING?

JEREMY GREENWOOD

By the end of March our resident birds were in full voice, singing to advertise their ownership of territories and to attract mates. It reminded me of how much bird "watching" really depends on listening. Well over half the birds that I encounter are individuals that I first detect not by seeing them but by the sounds they make, not just the songs but their various calls. Songs and, to a lesser extent, calls are characteristic of each species so that even someone like me, who finds it difficult to distinguish "Pop Goes the Weasel from "God Save the Queen", can generally identify what birds they have heard without even seeing them. Bird listening adds a lot to one's birdwatching. It used to be much more difficult to learn songs and calls than to learn what the birds look like. Whereas books had illustrations that clearly showed the birds' appearance, it was difficult to describe songs and calls in words. Nowadays, however, there are identification guides that include CDs of songs and calls along with the books; and plenty of free sound recordings are available on the Internet. (See below). I am no expert but my experience has been that if I hear an unfamiliar song, it is important not only to try to see the bird, so that you can identify it, but also to watch it while it is singing, to associate the song directly in my mind with the appearance of the bird. When I started trying to learn songs, I started with the easy ones. (I suppose that applies to learning

anything). For example: the Song Thrush "sings each song twice over", as Robert Browning put it; Blackbirds have rich, mellow tones in a rolling delivery; Great Tits call "tea-cher, tea-cher" over and over; the loud, forceful, almost explosive delivery of the Wren has been likened to machine gun; in contrast, the Robin's song sounds melancholy. Books, CDs and the internet A few sources. 1. Geoff Sample's book and CD "Garden Bird Songs and Calls", published by Collins, is inexpensive and has most of the birds one would commonly hear around Balmullo. 2. Geoff Sample's "Collins Bird Songs and Calls" (book and 3 CDs) is more expensive but also much more comprehensive. 3. The British Trust for Ornithology has produced a number of free bird identification videos that cover sounds as well as appearance and behaviour. (www.youtube.com/user/BTOvideo). 4. Xeno Canto has a huge collection of free bird recordings from around the world. One needs to be aware of its international scope, when looking up a species. For example, if you just look for "wren" you will be presented with dozens of different species of wren and you need to know that the international name for what we simply call "wren" is "Eurasian wren". (www.xeno-canto.org).

WILLIE RENNIE

The British Heart Foundation brought together local politicians with their funded research groups at the University of St. Andrews to show off their work on metal ions cardiovascular research. http://medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk/blog/bhf-and-mspsvisit/. Pupils from Bell Baxter High School grilled politicians in the Scottish Parliament chat room. Murdo Fraser, Mark Ruskell and myself were asked questions ranging from the police and education to Europe and independence. The closure of the Royal Bank of Scotland branches in Anstruther and Cupar will be a big blow to those communities and businesses. They are expecting customers to use the local post office, telephone or internet services instead. If you are directly affected by the closures I want to hear from you. I have been engaging with the holiday parks industry this month with visits to the Tayport Links Caravan Park and the Elie Holiday Park to meet the Fife and Central Branch of the British Holiday and Home Parks Association. At the meeting in Elie we discussed business rates, Europe, the economy and planning matters. http://stayuknews.co.uk/news/politicians-celebratescottish-tourism-at-fife-park/ I participated in a vibrant meeting in the Corn Exchange in Cupar to discuss the plans for construction of 1400 homes to the north of the town. GO 'GREEN' LET'S TAKE THE BUS TODAY! Instead of forking out for petrol and parking, let's use our free bus pass, a remarkable thing for us pensioners, George says and let someone else do the driving! Nevertheless, sometimes travelling by bus can turn out to be a real irritating experience. If the bus is late for example and you need to be at an appointment at a certain time. People with annoying mannerisms? Why can't they have their fare ready before the bus comes, instead they fumble for change, delaying the queue who are standing out in the pouring rain? I don't mind people talking but those who have loud conversations on their mobile phones, the whole bus can hear what they are doing tonight! Kids who sit behind you and kick the back of your seat during the whole journey. People who open the window in the middle of winter and it's freezing! Not just children stand on the seats with their dirty shoes but teenagers sit with their feet tucked up on the seat too! Do they never give a thought for the next person who may sit on the seat afterwards that they don't want the crap off their shoes on their clothes? Constant coughs and sneezes from the passenger behind you and as you can sense the transmission of germs on the back of your head, you pull your scarf up over your mouth and breathe more shallowly hoping your immune system won't be too infected! Why can't they cover their mouths when coughing and sneezing? This is when I wish I was sitting at the back of the bus! Why can't they respect their fellow travellers and simply stay at home? The people who think they should dedicate a seat to their bag. Fair enough if the bus is quiet but they don't move it to accommodate other passengers when the bus is full. We shouldn't have to stand all of the way when there are free seats and why should we have to ask to sit there, surely they should decide to move their bag! We got off the bus recently only to be made aware that there was a big ugly lump of chewing gum stuck to George's favourite pair of jeans. Unknown to him, some inconsiderate person thought they would leave a little surprise for the next person so they left their chewing gum on the seat of

CHRISTINA JACK the bus. He tried to pull it off and the disgusting stuff had stuck to his thumb and index finger leaving him in a very sticky situation as the gum stretched and stretched! Isn't it such an eyesore to see our pavements covered in chewing gum? We try not to tread on it in case it becomes stuck to the sole of our shoe and then becomes stuck to our carpet at home. The dentist recommends we chew gum after meals if we cannot brush our teeth but that doesn't mean that irresponsible gum users should spit it out any where! It is an ugly site on our streets and can cost the Council a fortune to remove the discarded gum, 50 times the cost of a piece of gum! Awareness campaigns, I think wouldn't be enough and the installation of chewing gum bins would help but then again this is another growing cost pressure the Council can do without. Recent proposals suggest that gum manufacturers should contribute to the cost of gum removal and by switching to biodegradable gum. I'm not so sure on the contribution cost as this would put other food and tobacco companies under considerable highlight but I would be in favour of a tax on chewing gum. What's your opinion? Having said all that, you would love travelling on the new X7 coastal service Perth to Aberdeen, with leather reclining seats, you're sitting higher up than a normal bus therefore you enjoy more scenic views, there's a toilet facility and free Wifi. However, if you have to make a couple of connections, as we did, having to wait at least half an hour between buses, you have just tripled your travelling time. Hey-Ho, the bad bits give me something to write about!
