Brussels Town Hall
Brussels Town Hall is one of the Belgium’s finest civic buildings - not only because of the numerous sculptures adorning its walls, but also because of its perfect proportions and the incomparable beauty of its tower, the spire of which is topped by the statue of archangel Saint Michael. The foundation stone of the magnificent Gothic edifice was laid in the spring of 1402. In 1695, when the city was bombarded by Marshal de Villeroy, the Town Hall was destroyed by fire. Its reception rooms and alderman’s offices contain fine local tapestries from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, sumptuous Gothic wooden panelling, the insignia of ancient guilds and paintings from the collections at the Town Hall Museum.

Manneken-Pis
Manneken-Pis was at first a fountain that played an essential role in the former distribution of drinking water since the 15th century. The system was well-known across the entire Europe. Towards the end of the 17th Century, the statue became more and more important part of the city’s life. It survived the bombardment of Brussels in 1695 and became a precious symbol. Nowadays Manneken-Pis continues to enjoy its ceaselessly growing glory. During big events locals add on him with luxurious clothes. In the 18th century Manneken-Pis was dressed at least 4 times a year. Since he lost his main function in the network of water conveyance of the City in the 19th century, Manneken-Pis gradually became an image and symbol of the Brussels folklore, the joy of the inhabitants and their capacity of self-mockery.

It has twin regular façades with distant origins in Vasari’s long narrow street-like courtyard of the Uffizi, Florence, with glazed arcaded shop fronts separated by pilasters and two upper floors, all in an Italianate Cinquecento style, under an arched glass-paned roof with a delicate cast-iron framework. The gallery consists of two major sections, each more than 100 meters long (King’s Gallery, Queen’s Gallery), and a smaller side gallery (Gallery of the Princes). The main sections (King and Queen’s Gallery) are separated by a colonnade at the point where the Rue des Bouchers / Beenhouwersstraat crosses the gallery complex.

Tubes connect the spheres along the 12 edges of the cube and all eight vertices to the centre. They enclose escalators connecting the spheres containing exhibit halls and other public spaces. The top sphere provides a panoramic view of Brussels. Each sphere is 18 meters in diameter. Three spheres are currently (2008) closed to visitors, others can be easily reached by escalators. The vertical vertex contains a lift which was considered exceptionally fast and advanced at the time of building (the speed is 5 m/s). The
