W

e are delighted to welcome you for the first time and to present a product that is relevant and needed in all Baltic countries. Markets of the Baltic states are small, we depend on customers from Germany, Scandinavian and other large European countries. Some companies work independently, while others try to unite in clusters. It is great and welcome when companies have or develop their own product, export it and create jobs not only for themselves but also for other local companies. Anyway, we have a common goal – to find customers who can become long-term partners. Do we know enough about each other? Do we have a space where we can share information? If we considering the peculiarities of metal industry, everything is more complicated than it looks from the first sight. Although we live in the era of internet and social media; communication noise, excessive and meaningless information often limits the accessibility of relevant information. Competitive environment often requires speed, accuracy and reliability – not only in production, but also in use of means for increasing sales and marketing. The aim of Baltic Metalworking is to become an irreplaceable mean for communication between companies and professionals in the same field. With a specialised publication for metal industry we aim to make such communication purposeful and efficient, for us to become interested in each other and feel the market pulse and be able to tell about ourselves. English language was chosen for this publication for several reasons. Industry of the Baltic countries is very similar, it encounters the same problems; therefore, with the aim to bring all who work in the region together to grow successfully with each other we decided to provide the publication in one language for the whole region. Another important goal is to enable any potential customer, partner and investor in any country and any time to learn about our market by browsing electronic or printed Baltic Metalworking journal. We wish to help companies to become visible not only at the local market, but also beyond its borders; therefore, the second issue of the publication will be distributed in Finnish exhibition in Tampere. We offer to all producers who can introduce their services and products in foreign countries to advertise and tell about their company. All providers of equipment, tools, technological accessories, solutions and services will also have an opportunity to present their company and brands. Most producers are represented by one company, but not all companies have their representatives in all countries. Pay attention to all your products and share information with companies of all Baltic states. For the smallest companies that work in their country‘s market (providers of equipment, tools and services) we created a section “Business Inside”, where we will put advertisements in local languages, so that everybody would be heard and noticed. Industrial enterprises are employing robots

I

ndustrial enterprises consequently give more and more thought to the use of robotised systems. The company Prooftools has accumulated substantial experience over the years and is successfully executing such projects. Recently, the company has designed and inte­grated a complex automatic system that consists of two CNC machines {MAZAK) and a robot manipulator {FANUC), and controls the processes of products handling. It is most likely the only such system in the Lithuanian metalworking industry.

When the system is in automatic mode, the partitions are raised and the robot can freely operate the machine. In this case, people cannot enter that particular work area. When the system is switched to semiautomatic or manual mode, the partitions are lowered, the sensors activate a supplementary safety system the robot, by both physical and electronic means, is put off limits to the areas where people are working. C

omputer technologies have been a matter of interest of researchers and engineers during the World War II already. However, the true potential of these technologies was successfully revealed only in the end of the 20th century, more precisely, in the 1980s and the 1990s. Changed priorities of the countries in the beginning of the 21st century clearly untied hands for even bigger investments in the areas of research and technologies. Consequently, ongoing modernizations of various industries by using customized computer systems have eventually become a common phenomenon. 3D printing promises major changes to business in industry and production. Sensing this in Lithuania is quite difficult yet, but the world has already started showing appreciation for the benefits of this technology. This is a very significant event, because now 3D printers are capable to transfer the idea of mass production, which gained popularity in the beginning of the 20th century thanks to Henry Ford, to many industries. Only this time it is focussed on unique production rather than standardized and fast production. Is it not a strange coincidence? New production methods emerge in the beginning of the century,

which then become so popular that they simply and undoubtedly lead the humanity to a new stage of progress.

Technology dating back to decades

3D printing is often presented as an object production method based on using the layering technique. It was first mentioned in Japan in 1980, but only on the patent level and a completely different term was used. The term “stereolithography” was not only presented in the USA in the middle of the same decade, but it came along with the first 3D printer as well. Interestingly that, besides stereolithography, there are at least fourteen other 3D printing methods. Thus, even though 3D printing is often presented as a futuristic idea, it has actually existed for decades and it has been continuously under development for over thirty years. It is hard to justify slow progress in the contemporary business, but in case of 3D printing his sounds rather convincing. We should admit that 3D printing is a highly complex technology. It has been a long time when scientists and engineers have been able to convey their ideas in the form of a patent, however their practical implementation faces the challenges posed by other areas. The very first 3D printers probably

lacked both computer calculation resources and software potential and most likely they did not have a supply of materials suitable for production of 3D objects. In other words, the development of the idea of 3D printing was hampered by limited progress in research and technology areas needed for cooperation for a long time. Nevertheless, it seems that all the pieces have fell into the right places at last. Apparently, the revolutionary idea, that has been in incubation for decades, and early registration of patents for 3D printing methods happened at the best time. To cut a long story short, expiry of some patents has lit a green light for manufacturers of 3D printers. It goes without saying that a warm place never stays empty for long, thus there were plenty of volunteers eager to enter a relatively new and promising market. Linear dependence is replaced with the

exponential one

The technology, which has been in incubation for decades, met business only in 2009, when the FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) 3D printing method was finally released from the clutches of patent. This was enough to cause the prices of the first 3D printers developed for commercial purposes to go down from hundreds of thousands of Euros to thousands and sometimes even to hundreds of Euros over a period of several years. Dozens more 3D printing patents expired over the next six years. This list also includes the SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) method, which, unlike FDM, enables using not only plastic for printing of 3D objects but also metal, glass, or even ceramic materials. We should admit that the prices of technically sophisticated 3D printers do not drop as fast. Nevertheless, the industrial 3D printer based on the SLS method for less than one hundred thousand Euros presented by the French in 2016 was a pleasant surprise for many people. Naturally, not everybody finds such pricing attractive. It will probably take a long time before we are able to place the most advanced 3D printers at schools or homes, but the business sector is already prepared to accept this challenge.

Considering such trends, analysts’ favourable outlook in respect of growth of the value of the 3D printing market should come as no surprise. We wish to believe such outlook. According to “Gartner”, a total of almost half a million 3D printers have been sold last year, which means that the scope of sales has increased more than twice within just a year. Companies developing 3D printers also report continuous growth of income and improving sales figures. This perfectly explains why analysts have finally decided to associate exponential outlook with the growth of a linearly developing market. Interestingly that Corporation “Hewlett-Packard”, which undergoes some changes, also plans on reviving their business by investing in 3D printing. The first developed 3D printers patented by “Hewlett-Packard”, purchasing of companies engaged in 3D printing on a periodical basis, new partnerships and idea to develop a versatile 3D printing ecosystem within time. These plans are ambitious, but they move forward fast. The first testing and production laboratory for 3D printing materials opened its doors in the USA this year and serves as a perfect example that “Hewlett-Packard” does not just give promises in vain. The Corporation perfectly understands the potential for 3D printing, whereas many years of business experience allow making strong-minded decisions.

As 3D printers get cheaper, there are more and more of those, who would like to take advantage of this. Increasing printing speed and the possibility to use the materials designed for production rationally and practically without incurring any losses make this matter even more attractive. Despite that projects implemented behind closed doors are contrary to the vision of a common ecosystem, they still are

able to attract investors’ attention. It would seem that things worked out very well, therefore now, as we observe the achievements in the field of 3D printing, we are already able to simultaneously apply this methodology for industrial purposes. The market does exactly that. Respective market sectors are already enjoying the added value gained from 3D printing. Others plan on using the advantages of 3D printers in the near future. Taking this into consideration, it is easy making a list of industries where 3D printing would gradually give more advantage: 1) Medicine. Things, which used to be possible only in fiction movies not long ago, are gradually becoming daily routine of this industry. Skull prosthesis, hearing aids, production of spinal vertebrae or rib implants by using 3D printing have already become a reality. Medical specialists are already talking about printed blood vessels, bones, heart valve and expect to use 3D bio-printers for reproduction of burnt skin. Naturally experiments with animals are still more common. Nevertheless, researchers claim that five or ten years from now 3D printers would become a typical attribute at every hospital. 2) Interior and design. Hand-made products are unique, but the time input spent on production is difficult to define. Meanwhile there are no shapes too complicated for a 3D printer, the only thing needed for making them is designers’ imagination and computer drawings. 3D printing will definitely give a futuristic advantage to the area of interior and design. Moreover, there are no limits as it comes to objects, which could be printed, starting with furniture or cutlery and ending with vases, light fixtures, or simply decorations of an unconventional design. 3) Construction industry. This industry requiring precision and due diligence is ready for some changes. Using 3D printers enables drastic reduction of not only the time needed for construction or cost of work but also expenditure on account of building materials. 3D printing has been used for construction of ten five-floor buildings in China back in 2014, meanwhile an innovative office was printed in Dubai and it has opened its doors in spring 2016. In Madrid pedestrians are already walking on the first printed bridge built by using specifically designed concrete, while in Amsterdam this method would be used for “building” the first in the world metal bridge for pedestrians by the end of this year. 4) Vehicles. Vehicle manufacturers were among

the first ones to “tame” 3D printers. They are used for making prototypes and vehicle parts, however 3D printing has been consistently preparing the vehicle industry for even bigger challenges. It seems that “Ford”, “Mercedes-Benz”, “Audi”, and BWM are ready for them. The latest investments and procurements indicate that these manufacturers are active in terms of their interest shown to application of plastic, metal, and 3D printing for daily mass production of vehicles. 5) Military industry. The experiments conducted by the US military allow assuming that the military industry would need help from 3D printers in the future as well. “Solid Concepts” presented a fully-functional analogue of pistol “Colt 1911” printed by using a 3D printer in 2013. Finally, after a rather long period of silence, this spring the US military spoke about a grenade launcher made within just 75 hours by using a 3D printer. Nobody could stay indifferent to this experiment because typically production of a grenade launcher costs tenths of thousands of Dollars and it takes months. 6) Clothing and jewellery. Jewellery made by using a 3D printer is becoming a daily element, however, printed clothing sounds like a very futuristic idea. It is interesting that 3D printing enables using unconventional materials for making clothes. Application of cinematic refinements, special plastic, and a 3D printer enables “Nervous System” designing dresses, which flow and move as if they have been made of an actual fabric, meanwhile this spring an Australian designer spoke about clothes printed of rubber. By the way, dresses made by using a 3D printer were even demonstrated during a beauty pageant in Albania in the end of the last year. 7) Food industry. Life on Mars is a subject that writers and directors find to be very interesting. Flying people to the Red Planet is not only a part of NASA’s plans, because the ambitious Elon Musk also has such plans. Whereas long trips to space are hard to imagine without a 3D printer, the food industry has to prepare to face these challenges in advance. Chocolate or jelly candy made by using a 3D printer have not received much attention from the conquerors of Mars just yet, however, printed pizzas have caught the attention of NASA right away followed by an investment amounting to 1 million US Dollars. 8) Aviation and spacecrafts. Manufacturers of aircraft parts are intensively looking for ways, which

In this case reasons to believe success of 3D printers include not only the fact that different industries are eager to test their advantages, but researchers, engineers, and entrepreneurs of different nationalities work on this as well. Success is probably driven by the general interest, however 3D printing is definitely no revolution. It looks more like evolution. It is evolution, which proves our, as Homo Sapiens, ability to grasp new processes in pursuit of even better future.
