EDITOR’S LIFE

A Home for the Community With another successful Pride behind us, the GLCCB and Pride Committee are wasting no time in planning next year’s festival. New dates have been selected for Baltimore Pride 2014: June 12-22. The extended dates will include many new aspects to Baltimore Pride, like Pride with the Orioles, plus the usual favorites. For those interested in helping to plan 2014, please join us for a planning session on Monday, July 22. Contact the Center for details. In other GLCCB news, the board has hired Interim Executive Director Matt Thorn to stay on as the Center’s permanent Executive Director. Matt has worked in nonprofit management and fundraising for nearly a decade, and the Center is certain to benefit from his continued leadership. This year, Matt will also lead the Center to a new location: as of last month, the GLCCB has sold 241 W. Chase Street and the board

of directors is evaluating locations to become the new home for the Center. While this building has been a second home to many over the last three decades, its lack of handicap accessibility and its constant need of repair have rendered the building a burden, rather than a community asset. Once selected, the new location and our new home will better serve all segments of the LGBTQ community and its ever-evolving needs. As we embark on this new journey together, the GLCCB will always hold the needs of the community as its highest priority. The Center is and will always be a home to those in need!

Local Summer Fun

AVAM

BY ANTHONY MOLL Locals know that Charm City comes alive in the summertime, largely due to the fact that Baltimoreans don’t need to escape city limits to find a spectrum of activities right here at home. Whether revelers wish to enjoy the summer heat or escape from it indoors, we have a great list of summer escapades to pursue without ever leaving the beltway.

Among the upcoming authors is Kiese Laymon, who will be reading from his latest novel, Long Division, a layered novel exploring race and adolescence in the American South. The Baltimore arts scene doesn’t rest during the summer, and neither should you.

FESTIVALS

The American Visionary Art Museum is atwitter with energy during the summer months. Baltimore’s one-of-a-kind museum for self-taught, intuitive artistry offers summer art courses, free yoga events, and a brand new exhibit celebrating Baltimore’s unique connection to our national anthem, “A Very Visionary Star-Spangled Sidewalk.” The museum is also home to the annual Flicks From the Hill event, an outdoor summer movie series. In a town known for its summer festivals, the merriment is far from limited.

FILM Baltimore summers wouldn’t be complete without the occasional reprieve from the sticky heat in front of the big screen. Not all of us are eager to watch superheroes, explosions, and car chases all summer long. Luckily, the historic Charles Theatre has something for moviegoers whose tastes are a bit more subtle. In addition to their regular fare of independent and art-house films, the Charles offers its celebrated revival series, a blend of classics, camp, and foreign favorites. Highlights include Ruggles of Red Gap, Notorious, and All About Eve. $7.50-$9.50 1711 N. Local Athletes Head to World Outgames

By Frankie Kujawa

Overflowing with athleticism and patriotic spirit, the 3rd World Outgames will take place this August in Antwerp, Belgium. This LGBTQ global event promotes fair play in sports, cultural engagement and universal human rights awareness. Among the diverse group of participants from all over the world, Baltimore is being represented this year by rower Kyle Suib and soccer player Erik Jones. The First World Outgames was held in Montreal, Canada in 2006, with the second games being held in 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The event, which includes roughly nine days of competitions, also boasts a cultural festival in conjunction with many museums in the host city, as well as a two day conference on LGBTQ global issues. Licensed by GLISA (Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association) International, the World Outgames beckons 8,000-10,000 participants world-wide in over 35 sporting competitions. Kyle Suib, a current Washington, D.C. resident, has rowed in many competitions throughout Baltimore. Having rowed for almost seven years, Suib began his rowing endeavor by originally running cross country but found he had a natural ability to oar while at University of Delaware with a friend. Suib took a small break from the sport until he moved to Washington, D.C. “Once I moved, I decided that I really wanted to get back into it. It’s more than just a recreation for me,” he told Gay Life. He is also very excited about traveling to Antwerp for the games: “I’m pretty horrified, as well! I’ve never been out of the country, so this should be an interesting experience for me.” Soccer player and Baltimore resident, PAGE 10

JULY 2013

Erik Jones, originally grew up in the Netherlands where “soccer was the thing” and can’t recall a time where he never played the sport. “I did play briefly in college, but mostly it’s been on recreational teams,” said Jones. “This is my first experience with [Outgames] but I’ve heard it’s a great thing and the guys I’m going with are great, so I’m not too worried about having a good time.” Jones is also excited to return to Belgium, which is the country in which he was born. “I’m definitely excited going to Antwerp! Having grown up in the Netherlands, I’m psyched to be heading ‘home’ to see family.” Both men emphasized the importance of the team camaraderie during the games. With the recent coming out of professional athletes, such as LA Galaxy soccer player Robbie Rogers and NBA player Jason Collins, the global athletic community is slowly opening up and growing more accepting of out athletes. “As someone who didn’t come out until later in life I can somewhat relate,” Jones explained. “I’m definitely proud of the athletes that are coming out and appreciate that we seem to have entered an environment of greater acceptance of gays. I’m hopeful that the current trickle of gay athletes coming out, will quickly lead to a realization that it’s silly this was ever an issue in sports.” Suib added, “My theory is if anyone comes out, that’s a victory in itself. It’s a great thing. Any time someone comes out, it’s a victory for the community, overall.”

SUMMER TRAVEL

LGBT FINDS AROUND

A

s far as LGBT-friendly, East Coast beach towns go, Atlantic City might not be the first destination that comes to mind. But the iconic seaside destination continues to grow as a favored location for gay and lesbian travelers, offering a variety of new nightlife, musical theater debuts, and chart-topping performances for the LGBT community. Within easy driving distance of a third of the country’s population—Atlantic City is 60 miles from Philadelphia, 150 miles from Baltimore, and 175 miles from Washington, D.C.,— the city that’s “Always Turned On” is perfect for single travelers and couples seeking a last-minute getaway. Atlantic City earned a spot in the ranks of top gay destinations when it took the second spot on “Top Five Up and Coming Gay Destinations” list by GayTravel.com, an online travel magazine dedicated to the LGBT tourist. A sampling of popular LGBT activities and events in Atlantic City includes the following: ■■ Pro Bar, Atlantic City’s first and only gay casino nightclub at Resorts Casino Hotel, features the hottest DJs, theme nights, special guests, and more. Pro Bar was the 2011 Philadelphia Gay News choice for best nightclub in Atlantic City, winner of the 2012 Atlantic City Nightlife Awards for Best Gay Bar and home to Atlantic City’s Best Bartender of 2012! ■■ Resorts Casino Hotel’s Diva’s DO AC is the “don’t miss” drag show of the year. Featuring performers who impersonate famous celebrities such as Cher, Bette Midler, Prince, Patti Labelle, Tina Turner, Liza Minelli, Joan Rivers, BALTIMOREGAYLIFE.COM

and Lady Gaga. For more information, visit ResortsAC.com. ■■ Pageants! This September, the annual Miss America Pageant will return to the famed Atlantic City Boardwalk after spending eight years in Las Vegas on September 15. A week later, the Miss’d America Pageant will take place at the House of Blues Showboat Casino Hotel on Sept. 21, 2013. Originally a fundraiser and spoof of the worldfamous Miss America Pageant, this hilarious event features drag queens strutting down the world’s most famous runway. For tickets, visit Ticketmaster.com. Atlantic City is also home to annual events with a LGBT appeal including October’s three-day Out in AC event, a Halloween-inspired festival with pool parties, celebrity appearances, and much more. Texas Teachers Can Out Students TEXAS

A federal court in Texas ruled that public schools have the right to share information about a student’s sexual identity or sexual behavior with parents. The decision reverses that federal district judge who, in November 2011, ruled that two softball coaches were wrong to out then 16-yearold Skye Wyatt to her mother, Dallas Voice reported. In the recent ruling, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said that “there is no clearly established law holding that a student in a public secondary school has a privacy right under the Fourteenth Amendment that precludes school officials from discussing with a parent [emphasis theirs] the student’s private matters, including matters relating to sexual activity of the student.”

Transgender Ex-Navy SEAL Shares Her Story NATIONWIDE

For two decades Kristen Beck fought for the United States as a U.S. Navy SEAL. In a recent interview, Beck publicly announced she is transgender. ‘Neither’ Becomes a Gender in Australia AUSTRALIA

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., made it clear he will not support legislation that adds protections for LGBT individuals. He said he’s “done” supporting immigration reform if an amendment that would enable gay U.S. citizens to petition their foreign spouses to become permanent residents is added to the bill. As of press time, the amendment hasn’t been put to a vote, and is not in the bill.

An appeals court ruled in favor of a Sydney activist who identifies as “neuter” and wanted to be legally recognized as such. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the state government initially agreed to list “Norrie”—who has undergone sexual reassignment surgery—as genderless, but rescinded their decision a few months later, stating that everyone must be either male or female. The appeals court rebuked that logic and in a unanimous ruling wrote, “as a matter of construction … the word sex does not bear a binary meaning of ‘male’ or ‘female.”

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell signed into law a trans-inclusive anti-discrimination bill, according to the Washington Blade. The bill adds gender identity and expression to the existing list of protected nondiscrimination categories and allows for enhanced penalties under Delaware’s hate crimes law for targeting someone based on his or her gender identity. The bill was signed into law on June 17, making Dela-

Russia’s lower house overwhelmingly passed the controversial bill banning LGBT “propaganda,” Reuters reported. Several cities, including St. Petersburg, have similar laws already in place. After the vote, the International Olympic Committee expressed concern for LGBT athletes participating in the 2014 Winter Olympics, which will be held in the Russian resort town of Sochi.

Pope: Vatican Has Gay Lobby ITALY

Pope Francis acknowledged that a “gay lobby” exists high up in the church hierarchy. According to CNN, the pontiff said that in Catholicism’s central bureaucracy, there are “holy people” but also “a stream of corruption.” Francis reportedly said: “The ‘gay lobby’ is mentioned, and it is true, it is there.”

The Kids Are All Right AUSTRALIA

The world’s largest study on gay and lesbian parents has concluded that the children of gay parents are doing equally well or better than the children of straight parents on a number of key health and well-being indicators. According to the Australian Study of Child Health in Same-Sex Families, kids in all families are equally matched when it came to self-esteem, emotional well-being, and the amount of time they spent with parents. When it came to overall health and family cohesion, the children of gay parents did even better than the national average. As of press time, the Supreme Court of the United States has yet to make a ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act or California’s Proposition 8. JULY 2013
