Dear Readers, In this week’s Parsha, we receive the mitzvos that are considered to be rational and easily comprehended by human intellect. Interestingly, these commandments present a unique challenge to the oved Hashem, a person who tries to serve the Creator. When the believer does a religious act such as keeping kosher, observing Shabbos, or sitting in a sukkah, there is an obvious spiritual dimension and divine connection. Following the laws of business, however, or making sure to be 100% honest – while the morally correct thing – may feel mundane and, at most, secondary to more obviously “spiritual” aspects of religious observance. This is not the case. In fact, it was for this reason itself Hashem didn’t command us to live moral lives and leave us to figure out “good” for ourselves – as the Gemara says, “If the Torah would not have been given, we would have learnt modesty from a cat.” If the Torah wasn’t given. Now that it was given, we don’t learn it from nature, but rather as a directive from Above. Once the Torah was given, we don’t lead ethical lives only because it feels right for society. It’s much more than that. These are G-d given laws through which one connects to Him just as one does on Yom Kippur. We don’t repay a loan simply because it feels right. We do so because the Creator willed it in the Torah and put it in the very DNA of creation. This doesn’t mean that we abandon all attempts to rationally understand or relate to these mitzvos. On the contrary, an important aspect of mishpatim is to understand and relate to these laws as much as we can. In a sense, you can say the purpose of creation was precisely these mitzvos. It is through these commandments that we involve our human intellect and moral compass, schlepping them along in our service of the divine. May we strengthen our resolve to become more scrupulous in the mitzvos bein adam l’chaveiro, ushering in the time when we will all feel spirituality in the mundane, for it will reveal that Hashem echad. Pan-Asia Kosher Training Seminar Convened by STAR-K in Shanghai

hey come from Yerushalayim; Perth, Australia; Mumbai, India; Manila, Philippines; Boston; Scottsdale; and, Los Angeles; but truly, the mashgichim who attended the first-ever PanAsia Kosher Training Seminar held in Shanghai, January 9-14, live out of their suitcases. Dedicated to the mission of ensuring and spreading Kashrus, even at a moment’s notice, implies where they are from is wherever their luggage happens to be. As the premier Kosher certifier in Asia, these STAR-K mashgichim are the “eyes and ears” out in the field who help certify thousands of products--as diverse as canned goods and nori sheets in China and South Korea, to spices and coconut products in India and Sri Lanka, to banana chips and coco sugar in the Philippines. Most of the certified products are exported from the region to the world as “bulk” ingredients that are processed around the word to make consumer products.

STAR-K operates regional support centers in Shanghai, China, and Cochin, India. In addition, representative offices are staffed in Manila, Philippines, Colombo, Sri Lanka, Karachi, Pakistan, and Jakarta, Indonesia. Joining Baltimore-based STAR-K Kashrus Administrators Rabbi Avrohom Mushell and Rabbi Dovid Heber, and Rabbis Amos Benjamin and Joel Weinberger, who run the STAR-K Far East and India/Sri Lanka offices, respectively, were STAR-K mashgichim: Rabbis Jonathan Goldschmidt, Yofiel Jacob, Yitzchok Kaufman, Nosson Levin, Aryeh Mendoza, Eli Putney, Ariel Stein, Yosef Wexler, and Shmuel Zvuloni. For some, it was the first time they were able to put a face to the voice, after many a telecommunication. Among the several highlights of the Seminar were: a Shabbaton and Malaveh Malka shiur; an enlightening and heartwarming personal interaction via SKYPE with STAR-K Rabbinical Administrator HaRav Moshe Heinemann; and, an erev Shabbos interac-

tive walking tour of Jewish Shanghai, where the participants learned about the immense effect that the open port of Shanghai had on Jewish migration in the WWII era and the astonishing Jewish life that existed in Shanghai during the war. Among the many topics covered during the event were: Plant report development; Rabbinical prohibitions in kosher law; Insect removal from vegetables- process and methodology; and, the International Dateline and, also, time issues when davening while traveling. Mashgichim and STAR-K office personnel paired up to inspect factories. One of the participants, who sent the following letter to STAR-K President Avrom Pollak, after the seminar, perhaps, best sums up the sentiments of everyone who joined: “I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the wonderful Shabbaton I just experienced in Shanghai.

As I go back into the field today it is with renewed energy after the inspiring few days that I spent in Shanghai with Rabbi Mushell, Rabbi Heber and all the incredible team of STAR-K Asia Pacific. All the shiurim and events were informative and inspiring. The question and answer session the mashgichim had with Rabbi Mushell was an important opportunity for us in the field to discuss face-to- face with our Kashrus Administrator various things that come up in the factories. Rabbi Heber’s shiur on zmanim and the International Dateline helped me to gain a clear picture and practical guidelines in this complicated area of halacha that the traveling mashgiach encounters a lot.However, without a doubt the highlight, in my opinion, was the question and answer session we had Sunday morning Shanghai time with the Rav HaMachshir Rabbi Heinemann, shlit”a. It was a tremendous zechus to be able to ask various shailas to such an adom gadol. Rabbi Heinemann, shlit”a, answered all our shailas at length with tremendous insight and depth and even a little humor sprinkled in.

Maryland delegate has submitted legislation that would turn over full control of the Baltimore Police Department to its home city. The Baltimore Police Department was established in the 19th century as a state agency, and has remained so ever since, even as revenue from city taxpayers funds its budget. Del. Talmadge Branch tells The Baltimore Sun the law is antiquated. The city council has encountered roadblocks when trying to change laws that govern police, including clashes with the mayor, who does have authority over police commissioner appointments. Similar efforts have failed in the

past, but the leadership of the city’s General Assembly delegation, the city council and Mayor Catherine Pugh have all signaled initial support. House Minority Leader Nic Kipke says he doesn’t anticipate opposition from fellow Republicans.

Baltimore’s Chaverim Text Alert System Facilitates Minyan for Meis Mitzvah Burial

nyone who has needed to make a minyan knows that it is not always easy to find one—let alone on, perhaps, the coldest day of the year, when the temperature is just under 20 degrees, with a 33-mph wind chill factor that makes it feel more like 5 degrees. At 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, these were the frigid conditions under which Chaverim solicited and coordinated the help of community members to make a minyan at the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation cemetery, enabling Kaddish to be recited at the burial. Had they not been there, the opportunity to say it would have been lost. “It was bitter cold, but we made it work, thanks to our Chaverim WhatsApp group text alert system which we opened up to all males in the community over the age of bar mitzvah,” notes Chaverim President David Bagan. “Our numbers are growing, but we are always looking for more volunteers. This is something that you don’t need to be hands-on and know what you are doing, as you would if you were a member of Chaverim, for example, changing flat tires.”

A minyan is mandatory, according to Torah law, at a burial, and that includes a burial for a “meis mitzvah“--the unknown and unclaimed deceased--to ensure that they receive a kevuras Yisrael, a proper Jewish burial. In today’s case, there were simply not enough men to make a minyan. When this group text alert system was initiated in 2015, in memory of my husband, Stewie (Asher Zelig ben Tzvi) Pensak, z”l, 38 men signed up to be “on call” for such circumstances. Today, there are 145 men of all ages who are part of this WhatsApp group. The WhatsApp text alert read: Chaverim Dispatch 2: We are looking for 5 men tomorrow for a burial. We need men both for a minyan and for digging. Approximately 4 pm at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation cemetery, Berrymans Lane, Reisterstown, MD 21136 ”Depending upon the factors of time and weather, for any call we get, will always be a challenge,” notes Mr. Bagan, who mentioned that with the ground as frozen as it was, there was no guarantee that those present would be strong enough to shovel the dirt back into the kever. “With the gov-

ernment shut down and being Martin Luther King’s birthday, I thought it would be much easier to find a minyan, but it wasn’t really.” Chaverim sometimes gets calls to go further out of the community for burials in such locales as Essex, DC, and Silver Spring. Today’s burial was a bit closer to Baltimore, which helped, also. In the end, those who helped make the minyan were comprised of Chaverim members, as well as a few WhatsApp group participants who were off for the legal holiday. Bochurim from Rabbi Shmuel Friedman’s yeshiva, one of which is a Chaverim member, were among the others. A community member who had heard about the levaya and had the

sensitivity and foresight to help alleviate the challenging weather conditions of those in attendance, supplied hand warmers and hot beverages at the cemetery. By the way, this was not the only request that Chaverim had on Monday. Between 7:15 a.m. and 6 p.m., alone, the organization received and responded, non-stop, to approximately 17 calls regarding mechanical car problems. “We made it work thanks to community members who came together,” emphasizes Mr. Bagan. “Since there were no males sitting shiva, it was even more of a mitzvah. That is what this WhatsApp group is really about. It’s not about jump starts, flat tires, or keys locked in the car, since not everyone is technically inclined, but being part of a community like Baltimore. n Wednesday January 29, 2019 community members, fire department officials and other interested parties gathered for a Los Angeles Ambulance Licensing Board Hearing regarding the LA Hatzolah’s application. The contentious hearing drew many grateful members of the LA Jewish community and some supporters from around the country. Among those who came to present in favor of Hatzolah’ s application was Baltimore Hatzolah ’s Executive Director, Dovid Heyman and Baltimore City Councilman Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer. During the Councilman’s passionate plea he explained why he made the cross country trip at his own expense, “Your decision today can determine if someone like my father, who suffered a stroke

gets to live or die. You get to determine if someone like my beautiful 2 year old daughter who was choking on a hard piece of mango, lives or dies. Fortunately for my family we live in a community that has an active Hatzolah that arrives on scene in under 2 minutes and has full EMS authority to treat and transport patients. When seconds matter, Hatzolah in my City makes that difference. That’s why I am here. “ The Councilman, who brought

with him strong letters of support from both Baltimore City Mayor Catherine Pugh and Baltimore City Fire Chief Niles Ford explained why Hatzolah makes sense on a city governance level demonstrating best practices and expands regionalism, he further stated, “as a member of the Baltimore City Council’s Budget & Public Safety committees, I can testify that there is no another organization that is more critical to the jurisdictions they serve and at the same time makes

sound governmental sense. Hatzolah’s all-volunteer EMTs and Paramedics, save Baltimore City taxpayers millions of dollars. “ The participation of the Baltimore delegation truly showed the connection Baltimore has with other communities throughout the United States and the extraordinary lengths dedicated community advocates will go to advance lifesaving initiatives. A ruling by the Board is expected in the next thirty days.

altimore County Schools is initiating a search for its next superintendent. The contract for the county’s interim superintendent, Verletta White, will expire June 30. The Board of Education of Balti-

more County will retain the services of an executive search firm to facilitate the search process and identification of potential candidates. The specific firm has not yet been determined. “The board believes strongly that the search process must be as transparent as possible and include input from the public and from stakeholders and our intention is to engage a firm

whose search process is aligned with these goals to identify and retain the services of the best candidate available,” said Julie Henn, vice chair of the board. Henn serves as chair of the board’s ad hoc superintendent search committee. The board is required, by law, to hire a permanent superintendent be-

fore July 1, 2019. In June, the Baltimore County School Board voted to appoint Verletta White to continue as the interim superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools. Karen Salmon, state superintendent of schools, twice rejected White for the position.

Rabbi Zev Pomeranz lived for nine years. During that time, I studied and taught at Rav Chaim Ilson’s Yeshiva and was a founding member of a leadership Kollel in Aish Hatorah in the Old City, which was led by Rav Ephraim Kirschenbaum. I was recruited to work for Aish HaTorah in Denver, Colorado, and served as their associate Rabbi for five years. Then Rabbi Porter called and asked me to lead Etz Chaim.

I understand you moved to Baltimore a few years ago to join Etz Chaim. Where were you living before you moved to town? I grew up in a typical modern orthodox home in Suffern, New York (near Monsey) and attended the local modern Orthodox day school and Yeshiva University’s high school for boys in Manhattan (MTA). After high school, I spent three and a half years learning in Israel. After returning to Manhattan to finish college, I received Semicha, and hit the jackpot by marrying my amazing wife Elana. We returned to Israel as a family, where we

We have such an amazing staff of highly intelligent and with-it Jewish educators running many different types of programs that cater to participants from diverse backgrounds and demographics, so it’s hard to chose. What do you love most about your job and what do you like least? I love teaching the most, especially when the student is open to honestly discussing and debating a challenging subject. Whether it’s explaining to a young professional how Israel has a right to defend itself against Palestinian terror, teaching dads how the Torah is an instruction book for life, or teaching more advanced students how to analyze the questions and answers of the Gemara - seeing the inspiration the student gets from comprehending something profound inspires me.

Recruiting for programs is tough. We spend a tremendous amount of effort doing outreach to attract more and more Jews. Those participants who have been to our programs enjoy them and keep coming back, but getting newcomers in the door is challenging. Many people have negative misconceptions about Judaism and the Torah or simply find it boring and unattractive. Once people meet our great educators and experience our programs they almost always want more. The good news is that our reputation is spreading and recruitment has been much easier than in the past. What keeps you going? First and foremost getting to work with our all-star staff certainly keeps me going. Rabbi Porter is an amazing mentor and friend who is always willing to share his decades of experience with me, along with a more than a few jokes. The rest of the Etz Chaim team Mrs. Chana Grove, Rabbi Efy Flamm, Rabbi Gavriel Horan, my wife Elana, and the newest additions, Rabbi Josh and Tamar Livingstone - are constant sources of inspiration for me through their dedication and passion. On top of that, getting to know our many sensitive, and inquisitive participants and getting to watch them grow closer to each other, themselves, and Judaism is a constant reminder of why I chose to do this work!

We took a few minutes to get to know Etz Chaim’s new director, Rabbi Zev Pomeranz, and to learn about what drives him to devote his life to Jewish outreach.

What inspired you to want to get involved with Jewish outreach? As a teenager, I found that Judaism really didn’t resonate with me. I went on a sort of spiritual journeys’ looking into all sorts of paths, until reading some books that presented Torah true Judaism from a secular philosophical perspective. I went on to meet some amazing rabbis and had a number of sincerely spiritual experiences that really changed my outlook on Judaism. I eventually decided that when I grew up I would do my best to share the beauty and depth of Judaism with others.

Evolution Biotechnologies CEO Ilan Morad, thinks it might have found the first complete cure for the dreaded disease – a treatment akin to a cancer antibiotic. The treatment, called MuTaTo (multi-target toxin), uses a combination of cancer-targeting peptides and a toxin that specifically kills cancer cells. Because the cells would be killed, patients could likely stop treatment after a number of weeks and not need a drug cocktail throughout their lives, according to the report. Dan Aridor, the chairman of the company’s board, is confident in the team’s progress. “We believe we will offer in a year’s time a complete cure for cancer,” Aridor told the paper. He continued: “Our cancer cure will be effective from Day One, will last a duration of a few weeks, and will have no or minimal side effects at a much lower cost than most other treatments on the market.” Morad told the Post that his team has concluded its first exploratory experiment on mice with promising results. City are outraged after discovering that a new mosque is slated to be opened in the Jewish Quarter. The mosque had fallen into disrepair and had not been operational for over 30 years. Bordering the Old City’s Jewish and Armenian Quarters, residents said that it would be a provocation to build a new Muslim house of worship with the Muslim Quarter so close by.

However, the Jerusalem municipality said that it had demolished an illegal addition the mosque had constructed without a permit and vowed that the city would preserve the “status quo.” “Following a complaint which was received several days ago regarding the construction of a room on the roof, the complaint was dealt with and the room dismantled,” said the municipality. “The City of Jerusalem will continue to maintain the status quo in the city and prevent any violation of it.”

Israel Summons Irish Ambassador Israel’s Foreign Ministry summoned Ireland’s ambassador last week after the Irish parliament advanced a

bill criminalizing purchasing goods from Judea and Samaria. The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it had summoned Ambassador Alison Kelly to stress its unwavering opposition to the legislation. “It is disturbing and disappointing that the initiators of the law are focusing on a hypocritical attack on Israel, rather than on dictatorships that slaughter their citizens,” said the Foreign Ministry. “This is a clear expression of obsessive discrimination that should be rejected with disgust.”

The summons came after Ireland’s lower house of parliament approved the bill by a 78-45 margin. The bill bans any and all commerce with entities located over Israel’s pre-1967 border, including the Golan Heights and Jerusalem. Sponsored by the Fianna Fáil-The Republican Party, the bill’s wording criminalizes “the import and sales of goods, services and natural resources originating in illegal settlements in occupied territories.” It also bans any attempt to “assist another person to import or attempt to import settlement goods.” Should the bill pass, it would be the first time that a European nation outlawed attempts to purchase goods from territory Israel captured in 1967’s Six Day War. The European Union has labeled the aforementioned goods but has not taken steps to ban them altogether. The legislation needs to pass with another three steps before it can take effect. Israeli officials reacted harshly following the vote in Ireland’s parliament and said that it would harm Israeli-Irish relations irreparably should it become law. “Israel is outraged over the legislation against it in the Dail which is indicative of hypocrisy and anti-Semitism,” said a statement by the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday after the bill passed its first hurdle. Israel Allows Payouts to Hamas to Resume Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave the go-ahead last

Thursday to transfer $15 million of Qatari money to the Hamas terror group in Gaza. Netanyahu’s decision to allow the transfer came after the defense establishment told him that the funds are needed to prevent war from breaking out. As part of a long-term cease fire agreement with Hamas, Israel allows Qatar to transfer monthly payouts of $15 million to Gaza in order to pay the salaries of civil servants in the Strip. According to the heads of the

Mossad and Shin Bet security services and IDF intelligence, failure to transfer the money would worsen the humanitarian conditions in the Hamas-led territory and would likely lead the population to call for another round of fighting with Israel. Netanyahu had frozen the scheduled cash infusion earlier in the week after an IDF officer narrowly avoided death on the Gaza border when his helmet deflected a sniper’s bullet. Netanyahu said that the shooting

violated the understandings reached with Israel and had halted the money transfer until further notice.

Despite Netanyahu allowing the funds to go through, on Friday Hamas officials in Gaza refused to accept the money. “We will not turn Gaza into an area for managing elections in Israel,” a senior Hamas official blustered. Later reports said that the terror group is angry that Israel is preventing them from using the cash infusion to pay members of its armed military wing. Following marathon negotiations between Israel and Qatar, Hamas later allowed Gazans to accept the money directly from Qatar for humanitarian reasons. Qatar said, however, that it would stop the monthly payouts and give the money to UN officials in Gaza instead to distribute as they see fit. “We will not pay the salaries of the Hamas employees,” Qatar’s ambassador to the Gaza Strip, Mohammed al-Emadi, stated. “Both sides are relieved now, totally relieved, and it is much better this way.”

The competition was sponsored by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in conjunction with Globalia Corporación Empresarial SA, a Madrid-based tourism company. Launched in 2017 by Ziv Tirosh and Waze co-founder Uri Levine, Refundit’s software allows tourists hailing from countries outside of the European Union to quickly apply for a Value Added Tax (VAT) refund through their smartphones without waiting at the long lines common at airports. “We are excited by the recognition we received from the World Tourism Organization to the contribution of Refundit to global tourism economy and tourists,” Tirosh said after winning the top prize. “Refundit’s solution is aimed to fix an inefficient market in which 90% of refund – some 23 billion euro – entitled to non-EU tourists is not returned to its owners every year.” Refundit says that its app helps the tourist, the retailer, and the local economy by cutting down on unnecessary red tape involved. “Refundit’s digitized solution also allows tax authorities to provide refund approvals online and enables them to integrate innovative elements such as Big Data, advanced analytics, AI capabilities and fraud prevention into the VAT refund,” said the company in a statement. Other than Refundit, three other Israeli startups made the competition’s top 10. The contest saw 2,771 companies from 132 nations contending for the top prize.

This week, a senior commander in Iran’s most elite military force threatened to “wipe Israel off the map” if it continues striking his country’s forc-

es in Syria. Brig. Gen. Hossein Salami, who is the deputy of the Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, said at a press conference that the Islamic Republic would continue battling Israel until the Jewish State ceased to exist. “Our strategy is to erase Israel from the global political map. And it seems that, considering the evil that Israel is doing, it is bringing itself closer to that,” Salami threatened. Salami added that Israel’s attacks in Syria would eventually lead to an armed conflict that would result in its destruction. “We announce that if Israel does anything to start a new war, it will obviously be the war that will end with its elimination, and the occupied territories will be returned,” he warned. “The Israelis will not have even a cemetery in Palestine to bury their own corpses.” The general’s comments came amid an escalating war of words between Iran and Israel in recent weeks as tensions have heated up on the Jewish State’s northern front. Israel has reiterated multiple times to prevent Iran from establishing itself militarily on its border with Syria and has launched a campaign of airstrikes to foil Tehran’s intentions. Last week, Israeli warplanes bombed Iranian targets near Damascus’ airport during an unusual daylight raid. After Iran responded by launching a missile that Israel intercepted above its Mount Hermon, Israel’s air force went on an extensive bombing campaign in Syria that officials said flattened Iranian arms depots, training centers, and a Syrian anti-aircraft battery. Iran responded to Israel’s airstrikes with warnings that it will soon jettison its policy of refraining from retaliation. Speaking with Press TV, Iran’s military Chief of Staff General Mohammed Bagheri said earlier this week that “among the country’s broad strategies, there is a defensive strategy. We defend the independence and territorial integrity and national interests of the country.” The commander of Iran’s ground forces warned a few hours later that he had ordered his men to move to a “forward-moving and offense” formation. “To protect Iran, the armed forces no longer need asymmetric approaches, and we are at a stage where

President Trump has long alleged that illegal immigrants vote in elections and appointed a commission in 2017 to probe illegal voting in the 2016 presidential elections. The panel eventually disbanded due to lawsuits and bureaucratic infighting.

Hitler’s Plans for N. America Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said on Friday that his state has uncovered at least 95,000 people on its voter rolls who are not U.S. citizens, raising fresh concerns of voter fraud. Paxton also said that 58,000 of the 95,000 non-citizens had already voted in at least one election, despite the state’s stringent voter ID laws that many say are the toughest in the nation. The findings came following an inquiry the Texas Department of Public Safety launched in an effort to determine if the state is plagued by voter fraud. Texas Governor Greg Abbot said following Paxton’s announcement that law enforcement would begin cracking down on residents who voted illegally in the state’s elections. “Thanks to Attorney General Paxton and the Secretary of State for uncovering and investigating this illegal vote registration,” tweeted Abbot. “I support prosecution where appropriate. The State will work on legislation to safeguard against these illegal practices.” Texas Secretary of State David Whitley responded to the report by calling on counties throughout the state to force people suspected of illegally voting to provide proof of citizenship within 30 days. Should they fail to do so, Whitley said, then the county is allowed to legally strip

Canada’s national archives announced last week that it had purchased a book that once belonged to Nazi Fuhrer Adolf Hitler, ym”sh, that detailed the genocide he planned for North America. Library and Archives Canada said that it bought the book in 2017 for $4,500 and is storing it in the national library in Ottawa. It added that it decided to unveil the acquisition to the public ahead of International Holocaust Memorial Day. Titled “Statistics, Media and Organizations of Jewry in the United States and Canada,” the 137-page report was written by Heinz Kloss, a linguist and Nazi sympathizer. Kloss was tasked with compiling a report about the United States ahead of Germany’s expected invasion of North America and researched major Jewish population centers at the time, along with a description of Jewish organizations and publications. The book was stamped with the words “ex libris Adolf Hitler,” suggesting that it came from the Nazi leader’s personal library. Experts

It also demonstrates that the Holocaust was not a purely European event, but rather an operation that was stopped before it reached North America,” said Library Archives Canada in a statement. The Holocaust Education Trust told CNN that the book exposed the “chilling Nazi ambition” to exterminate North American Jewry. “This story highlights Hitler’s obsessive anti-Semitism and the chilling Nazi ambition to murder Jewish people wherever they were in the world,” said an official. “It reminds us of the need to remain resolute in standing up to anti-Semitism, defending historical truth and educating the next generation.”

U.S. Shutdown Cost $11B Analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found that the recent partial U.S. government shutdown caused $11 billion in economic damage. The damage came from lost output from federal workers, reduced consumption, and delayed government spending. The shutdown cost the country’s GDP 0.002% but it is predicted that the economy will repair itself as the government returns to work. The report also said that the economy had lost $3 billion in lost economic activity during the record 35-day shutdown.

“Among those who experienced the largest and most direct negative effects are federal workers who faced delayed compensation and pri-

vate-sector entities that lost business,” the report found. “Some of those private-sector entities will never recoup that lost income.” President Donald Trump ended the record 35-day government shutdown on Saturday when he agreed to pass a spending bill to fund governmental operations despite not getting the $5 billion he wanted to build his border wall with Mexico. Congressional leaders agreed to pass a bill that would fund the government for three weeks in exchange for negotiations on border security. Trump said, however, that he is prepared to shutter the government again if nothing concrete is reached by February 15 and broached the idea of declaring a national state of emergency to provide funding for the wall.

Breathing in Pollution on a Cruise

When many think of a cruise, their first connotation is likely breathing the salty ocean air on the ship’s deck as it sails on the blue water. But that’s not the only thing passengers may be breathing. A new report found that cruise ships cause such high levels of air pollution that passengers may be breathing air “comparable to concentrations measured in polluted cities, including Beijing and Santiago.” The report was compiled by Ryan Kennedy, a professor at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Kennedy measured air pollution on four ships belonging to the cruise company Carnival over a two-year period and was shocked to discover that the ships emanate high levels of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. It was the aforementioned hydrocarbons that makes the air pollution so

lethal. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been shown to cause cancer and a whole host of other lethal diseases. “It’s dangerous – it’s not a healthy thing for us to be exposed to,” said Kennedy. Kennedy said that he consistently found the highest measurements of air pollution by the smokestacks in the back of the ship and stressed that the ships were unsafe both on the high seas and when docking in port. Environmentalists called on cruise ships to switch to alternative fuel sources in the wake of the report, noting that the most heavily polluted areas on the ship are where passengers commonly spend the majority of their waking hours. “What Dr. Kennedy found onboard was shocking,” said Kendra Ulrich, who works as a senior shipping campaigner at the environmental advocacy group Stand.earth. She said her organization is working towards safer cruises by “campaigning to get Carnival Corp. to stop using heavy fuel oil.” “What this industry giant does can have a huge effect in setting standards for the rest of the industry,” said Ulrich. Carnival, meanwhile, said that it works in conjunction with “national and international regulatory bodies like the [U.S. Environmental Protection Agency] to ensure the utmost safety of our guests and crew” and that its air conditions on its vessels “meet every requirement.”

Stop Kissing Hedgehogs

Want to avoid getting salmonella? Stay far away from your pet hedgehog. Recently, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Pollution warned the public not to get too close to hedgehogs. The warning comes on the heels of another word of caution from the center: make sure to wash your hands

after playing with your pet chickens. Hedgehogs may be cute – if prickly – but lab tests in an ongoing investigation show that pet hedgehogs are probably to blame for a multistate salmonella outbreak. Eleven people are infected with salmonella in eight states, according to the CDC. The illnesses started in October. Ten of the eleven infected patients said they had contact with a pet hedgehog before becoming sick. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea and stomach cramps, which can last four to seven days. Most people recover without treatment. Among patients who experience severe illness, the infection can, in rare cases, cause death if not treated promptly with antibiotics. There are an estimated 1.2 million salmonella cases in the United States annually, and various foods are to blame for about 1 million of those illnesses, according to the CDC. Even hedgehogs that look clean and healthy can carry salmonella germs, which show up in their droppings. You may keep their habitat clean, but the bacteria can easily spread to toys, bedding and nearly anywhere they roam. Hedgehogs are supposed to be allowed to roam so they don’t get depressed, but the CDC recommends against letting these pets wander freely in areas where you prepare or eat food. Pet owners are told to wash hedgehogs’ toys and supplies – but not in an area where food is prepared – and to wash their hands thoroughly after snuggling with their prickly pets.

PG&E has been linked to a series of wildfires in California, including the Camp Fire, which caused 86 deaths and destroyed 14,000 homes, along with more than 500 businesses and 4,300 other buildings. PG&E announced on January 14 that it intended to file for bankruptcy, but it had to wait 15-day period required by California law. The company needs to use the bankruptcy process – which will allow it to shed some of its debt – to pay for damages and stay in business. It is seeking approval for a $5.5 billion debtor-in-possession financing agreement. Previously, it said in a filing that it has only about $1.5 billion in cash and cash equivalents on hand. The company has cited at least $7 billion in claims from the Camp Fire. It is believed that the Camp Fire was started when a PG&E power line came in contact with nearby trees. PG&E reported “an outage” on a transmission line in the area where the blaze began, about 15 minutes before it started. Within the massive burn area, PG&E found power equipment and a fallen power pole riddled with bullet holes, according to a letter it sent to regulators. The company also reported that it found a downed line with tree branches on it. In addition, a series of wildfires in 2017 – many of which were also blamed on PG&E – caused $10 billion in damages and 44 deaths. In 11 of those fires, state investigators found the company violated codes regarding brush clearance near its power lines or had made related violations.

ture”. Human consumption should be an expression of a free willed act to partake from G-d’s bounty for the higher and noble purpose of sustaining our self to serve Him. Man cannot be part of the “bound” unfree willed world of nature. He must therefore refrain from sitting at the same table with that which belongs to the animal world. Man must create and define his boundaries, those defined by the Torah. The moment an item leaves those borders it becomes part of the kingdom of nature, and disconnected from the realm of free will, the exclusive domain of man. (Adapted from Rabbi S.R. Hirsch) The world of Torah is a world of boundaries. Indeed, the prohibition of "treifah" applies to other situations of food that exited its boundaries, such as meat of sacrifices that has been brought out of “its organic home”, the boundaries of the Temple and Jerusalem. When the meat of a sacrifice is snapped from “its living organism” it severs its connection that gives it definition in the context of man and is thus removed from being worthy of serving him. The Torah instructs us to throw the treifah to the dogs. Dogs represent the epitome of a nature without limits, as the Talmud tell us that “doors hold no barrier to dogs”, for they are persistent in burrowing through any defensive lines that stand in their way. The dog’s instinctive brazenness summons their boundless desires. Have you ever wondered why so many athletic teams sport names associated with animals? Have you ever pondered why there is such a strong appetite during sporting events? Have

you ever observed the stance of most athletes; crouched, muscles taut, ready to spring, leap and pounce upon their “prey” and its similarities to wildlife in motion? The obsession with sports competitions and the need to show allegiance to a team is a pale reflection of the soul’s deepest desire to win in the real “Battle of the Titans”, the struggle of the good inclination over the bad. When we leave however the arena of Torah we are exposed to the field of nature and its instinctive drive for pleasure and superficial satisfaction. Our noble mission transforms into an expression of the trivial pursuit of an ephemeral prize mimicking the natural world of the animal kingdom and its behaviors. Let us realize that some things are simply “out of bounds” for those who seek true meaning in life. It is time that perhaps we should finally “let the dogs out” from the barriers of our souls. Ironically, when man emulates animal behavior by acting coarsely and gruffly, we label it “human nature”. The greatness of a Jew, the great Kotzker Rebbe taught us, lies in his being; “mentshlich heilig,” humanly divine. Controlling and directing our urges and instincts within the confines of a life of Torah and Mitzvos is ultimately the greatest expression of our humanity! May we each achieve a greater and more significant victory this Sunday, rejoicing in being part of the only true winning team!

The Big Picture

Modern-day Slavery

There are few issues as contentious in the modern era as slavery. For understandable historic reasons, we naturally abhor the notion of slavery, and even mentioning it requires a trigger-warning in contemporary college-campuses. Yet, this week the Torah introduces us to Jewish civil law following the revelation at Mt. Sinai, via no other than this controversial subject. In fact, as opposed to the distorted view presented by antitheists and their merry horsemen on this matter, an Eved Ivri is most definitely not a classic slave. The Torah explicitly defends and bolsters the rights of this Eved, who is placed in long-term servitude for rehabilitation when not able to function adeptly in society. He was to be treated with upmost dignity, participate only in non-laborious work, and would be immediately released to freedom if abused by his master. It is vital to consider the documented frightful environment in modern-day penitentiaries, as they strongly contrast with the dignified conditions afforded by the Torah to such unfortunate individuals.

Nevertheless, it bears scrutiny as to why the Torah would fire it’s opening salvo following Sinai, discussing such disturbing circumstances. The Ramban proposes that the introduction of this topic naturally follows from the Ten Commandments. There we are told that G-d extracted us from slavery in Egypt and also instructed us to keep Shabbos on the 7th day. This therefore necessitates us to afford rights to servants and to finally release them on their 7th year. While his explanation fits contextually into the placement of this subject, there must surely be a deeper thematic connection. The concepts and laws of such servitude have been irrelevant for over two thousand years, as they are dependent on the now defunct 50-year Jubilee cycle (Talmud Eruchin 29a). Interestingly though, in modern-day business Halacha, these concepts are alive and kicking. For example, the Talmud (Baba Metzia 10a) determines that an employee is allowed to submit his resignation at any time, as long as there is no substantial loss to the employer. that defines the limitations of servitude: “For the Jewish people are servants to me” (Vayikra 25:55) We all have a higher purpose in life, and as such are not permitted to become de-facto slaves to others, in this case our employers. This comparison of a regular employee to the Torah-defined ‘slaves’ prompts an obvious question. Why are we allowed to commit to long-term employment – are we not in essence pledging ourselves to a form of slavery? Tosfos (ibid) differentiates between regular employment and slavery. Employment is considered slavery only when the employer has the sole formal right of terminating a contract. When the employee has similar rights, the employer’s ownership over his work and time are curtailed – he is not a slave. However, others (Hagohos Mordechai) contend that servitude is still problematic in modern day employment if the worker is committed to anything longer than a 3-year contract. The logic behind this is that a ‘slave’ is described as ‘working double a worker’s wages’ (Devarim 15:18). Since a ‘slave’ works up to 6 years, it follows that a single ‘worker’ involves up to 3 years of work. Anything more than that is encroaching on slavery. This view is presented as normative Halacha by Rav Moshe Isserles (C”M 333:3). Others stipulate that anything less than 6 years is permitted. Only if an individual is destitute, is he allowed, like a voluntary Eved Ivri, to contract for a longer period (Shach). As you can imagine, this liberal definition of servitude, presents fundamental practical issues. In that light, Rabbi Moshe Sofer, the Chasam Sofer, penned several responsa (C”M 22 & 172) dealing with the appropriateness of long-term contracts for Rabbis. Rabbi Eliezer Waldenberg similarly

grapples with the appropriate length of office for a public servant. Interestingly, a critical exception is allowed by Rabbi Yair Bacharach (Chavos Yair 140 – discussed in the Ketzos Hachoshen). In that responsa, Rav Bachrach permits a professional Chazan to entertain a longer contract, for one simple reason. The limitation is that we must retain our servitude to G-d and a higher purpose, not to others. Although a Chazan is technically an employee, his sole mission is to spiritually inspire the community and lead them in prayer. He is therefore still considered to be a servant to G-d, regardless of his contract term. It would appear that what we do and how we approach our work fundamentally determines the essence of our aspirations and who we are in fact serving. I believe that the juxtaposition of the Eved Ivri to Mt Sinai is therefore very significant. As we enter the ‘real world’ and contend with the stress of making a living and supporting our families, we must honestly scrutinize our aspirations and obligations. Who are we in fact serving? Are we on a trajectory of modern-day slavery? We don’t need to work for Amazon or Walmart to fall into this trap. Are extra hours commuting for a relatively small pay increase worth the lack of face time with our children, and the lost possible investment in our spiritual wellbeing? Are we unwittingly perpetuating a form of servitude to our jobs, only to awaken at retirement and wonder where all that time evaporated? We are offered every Shabbos a day detached from our financial obligations to clarify our life’s direction. With crystal-clear focus, we can indeed smash the yolk of modern-day slavery. Background We explained in an earlier article that the basic definition of Loshon Hora is information which can cause physical or emotional harm. In the previous article, we added that the Torah does not allow for engaging in derogatory speech, even when no harm will come from the information. Thus, it emerges that it is not considered Loshon Hora when the speaker has no malicious intentions and the words themselves will not have negative repercussions. At times, whether or not the information will cause harm depends on the audience. Some listeners will view the information as negative, whereas others will not. Moreover, there are times when there will be no harm if an individual discovers the information, but there could be damage if it becomes known to the public. Since the speaker cannot control or monitor the spread of the information, it is generally forbidden to relate it, as it may reach the ears of the wrong person. In this article, we will discuss a dispensation which is limited to a situation in which the information will definitely not spread in a way that it causes damage.

The Dispensation According to the Chofetz Chaim, it is permitted to say Loshon Hora when all of the following conditions apply: • The speaker has no intention to degrade the subject. • The speaker knows that the listener will not lose any respect for the subject of the information when he hears it. • The listener is a Torah scholar who is in control of his words and never discloses confidential information. When these three conditions are met, no embarrassment or harm can come from relating the information. Therefore, relating it is permitted. Even if the subject of the information would prefer that it not be shared, it is not considered Loshon Hora, as no harm can come from it. Application: Ba’alei Teshuva Revealing that Someone is a Ba’al teshuva One contemporary application of this dispensation involves relating that a now-religious individual was formerly not religious, (known today as a ba’al teshuva). It is commonly assumed that it is permissible to relate that one is a ba’al teshuva. However, doing so may be prohibited, as it can cause embarrassment or other damage to the subject of the information. Based on what we have learned, it is only permitted if all three of the aforementioned conditions are met. Note that in some situations, the third condition is not necessary. When the information is said in a way that it is not embarrassing to the ba’al te-

shuva, and it is clear that nobody in the community where the word can get out would lose respect for him, no damage is being caused. In this case, it is irrelevant if the information will get out to others, because no one who discovers the information will view it as negative. Naturally, the dispensation mentioned here to omit the third condition assumes that the ba’al teshuva is not embarrassed by the spread of the information. However, if his past is embarrassing to him, it is forbidden to relate the information to someone who might reveal it to others. Here, it is possible that the ba’al teshuva will discover that people know about his past, and he will suffer emotional pain. (Note that as long as the subject is not embarrassed by it, it may be related even if he prefers that the information is not spread, as mentioned above.) If the Ba’al teshuva Does Not Mind If the ba’al teshuva has made it clear that he truly does not mind if people are aware of his ba’al teshuva status, the prohibition does not apply, regardless of what the listener will think. This is a general rule regarding Loshon Hora, as we will explain in another article. Nonetheless, the information may not be related in a degrading manner even in this case, as that is something that would definitely offend the ba’al teshuva. Known to the Public Another mitigating factor may help explain why it is common practice to relate that an individual is a ba’al teshuva. In a future article we will explain that under certain conditions there is no prohibition to relate

something already known to the public at large). In many situations, it can already be well known that an individual is a ba’al teshuva. It may be that the person himself had revealed this information to many friends, that he davens at a shul which is mostly made up of ba’alei teshuva, or that it is clear to those who he comes into contact with that he did not have a yeshiva education. In such a situation, the prohibition is greatly limited. However, consider the scenario of a ba’al teshuva who went to yeshiva at a young age and is fully acclimated to the Torah community. Such a person generally would not want his friends to find out that he is a ba’al teshuva. The information is not well known, and it may embarrass him. In this instance, it is certainly forbidden to reveal that he is a ba’al teshuva, unless all three aforementioned conditions are met. For a Constructive Purpose Even when none of the dispensations apply, it is still permitted to relate that one is a ba’al teshuva when it is for a constructive purpose (known as To’eles). There are numerous reasons why it may be necessary for one to tell another that an individual is a ba’al teshuva. For instance, the listener may need to know that the ba’al teshuva is sensitive to certain topics of discussion, or will need extra guidance in the performance of specific mitzvos. However, applying the dispensation of To’eles is complex, and a halachic authority should always be consulted.

Winter Break is Almost Here. Are You Ready? By Hylton I. Lightman, MD, DCH (SA), FAAP

s I write, our teenagers are engaged in midterms and the younger ones are chomping for a break. All are hanging onto the sliver of the proverbial sunrise on the horizon called winter break or Yeshiva Vacation Week. Jerusalem. Miami. Vail. Acapulco. St. Moritz. No matter the continent, whether it’s warm or cold or you’re staying home, you need to prepare to assure a win-win. Here is some “doctor stuff” to share. Warm or cold, think “sunblock” or “sunscreen.” This is needed, whether you are in a pool, playing tennis, skiing down a slope, snowboarding or ice skating. You will be coming face-to-face with the sun in almost any setting possible. Smear your face and all exposed skin with sunscreen. Of course, avoid the eye area. It’s easier to think about reaching for the bottle or tube to smear yourself and your loved ones with protection from those ultraviolet rays when you are in a warm climate. Yet the same holds true for the cold climates. The sun’s rays may feel weaker during the winter but, in reality, they are present and stronger than you realize. Smear with sunscreen in whatever setting. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Enjoy being in the sun once you have properly “sunblocked” your

skin and your children’s skins. Sunlight offers vitamin D, a vitamin that the body requires in order to absorb calcium. Vitamin D also promotes healthy bone growth and helps to maintain healthy bones. A short “commercial” on the benefits of vitamin D. It is an essential vitamin so calcium can flow through the bloodstream and be absorbed into bones. Too little vitamin D results in soft bones in children (rickets) and fragile, misshapen bones in adults (osteomalacia). Low levels of vitamin D have been associated in death of adults from cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment of older adults, severe asthma in children, and different types of cancer, as well as fatigue. Vitamin D is also known as the “sunshine vitamin” because the body produces it in response to the skin being exposed to sunlight. It also occurs naturally in a few foods – including some fish, fish liver oils and egg yolks – and in fortified dairy and grain products. Eat healthy. Exercise. And take a multivitamin that has vitamin D and calcium in it. Children older than 1 year of age need 600 IU, or 15 mcg, a day. Your child doesn’t have to get enough vitamin D every day. Instead, aim to get the recommended amount as an average over the course of a few days or a week. Calcium supplementation is especially important as many women

are learning the hard way as they become older. The need for increased calcium acquisition and storage begins very early in life, especially in the pre-adolescent years. Make sure your children have their well visits, please. Again – an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Next: hydrate, hydrate and hydrate. This means drink water, drink water, drink water. Sports drinks are okay too. Carbonated beverages like sodas should be limited to Shabbos and yom tov. The kids will push back. Nothing new here – and why should you be different? People seem to know to drink in warm climates but I am going to share with you an open secret: you can become dehydrated in the cold weather too. Remember Henry Worsley? He was the British explorer who died crossing Antarctica in 2016 and lost his life. Why? Because he dehydrated. It isn’t always easy to hydrate, especially when you are outdoors in either warm weather or layered in winter clothes. Honestly, you are probably concerned about the need to use a bathroom wearing all those layers. Nevertheless, if you are out in the cold for more than two hours, the cold combined with heavy clothing and high-intensity exercising like skiing or snowboarding can

contribute to dehydration. In addition, in the winter, we tend to go for longer periods without water, not realizing that breathing cold and dry air causes the body to lose fluids. When we perspire in the cold weather, the sweat turns into vapor and isn’t found directly on our skin. There’s no excessive perspiration that is usually the visual cue for us to drink water, drink water, drink water. The cold weather can be sneaky because when you are in it, you might not feel as thirsty because your cold weather body chemistry could affect your brain’s ability to let you know you need water. Cold weather also tends to move your body’s fluids from your extremities to your core. This increases your urine output and adds to dehydration. So weather, oops, I meant whether, you are in a warm or cold climate or wherever you find yourself at whatever time of the year, do not rely on thirst to tell you to drink. Drink often and before you are thirsty. In the winter, people feel about 40% less thirsty, yet the need to hydrate exists year-round. Further, the winter months can be a testing time for our immune system. It seems like our systems are more prone to the airborne viruses that abound. Dehydration is a contributing factor because it can weaken our immune systems. The lack of water can dry out the mucous

I just went out with Suri for the second time. Her entire family was sitting around the living room when I showed up to pick her up. I was encouraged to take a seat, and we all sat around for a while schmoozing. It was very nice and comfortable, and her siblings are all very outgoing and all participated in the conversation.

Suri has an older sister – by 15 months – who is single and was part of the discussion. I found myself very drawn to her sister. Something about her personality, style, looks and overall impression struck me in a very powerful way. When we finally left to go out on our date, I found myself thinking a lot about her sister and about the fact that I found her so much more engaging than Suri. I know this is a crazy letter – I hear it even as I’m writing it. But Suri pales in comparison to her sister. I liked Suri enough on our first date and agreed to go out a second time to see where it could go, but I wasn’t smitten by her the way I’m feeling about her sister. Do I have the right to react this way? And if it’s not totally crazy, what can I possibly do about this? I know now that Suri is not for me, so whether or not I act on my feelings will not make a difference in terms of me going out with Suri again. Maybe the lesson I was supposed to take from this is that there are women out there who bring out more in me, but I nevertheless am curious to know if I need to just walk away or if I can find a way to go out with Suri’s sister.

You can tell the shadchan or person that fixed you up with Suri that you would be interested in dating her sister in the future. You need to give this some time before this is acted upon, however. It may not feel comfortable for either of them but the person in between can feel out the situation for a future date. It’s common for girls to recommend a guy for their sister(s) after dating and for it to work out. But in this case, if the girl doesn’t do it, the shadchan may be able to do so after a while. Be respectful and sensitive but you can try to arrange for a date in the fu-

ture. One final thing: your language is rather striking. “You were smitten…” Being drawn to someone and being engaged by her is OK. Being smitten from a brief conversation in the living room sounds dramatic. Ask yourself why. What is it about her? What qualities did you see beyond looks? What does this say about you? What are your criteria for a relationship beyond externals?

By then, Suri may have recovered from your rejection; although, frankly, she may have felt as lukewarm about you – considering you were obsessing over her prettier, more personable sibling. The Shadchan Michelle Mond ou sound like a mature, self-aware young man who has involuntarily entered a sticky situation. Whether placing you in the situation – sitting around and speaking with the whole family – was the right thing is a matter of discussion, but it wasn’t a decision you made. However, you have to deal with the aftermath! The good news is, as you were aware, this might be a blessing in disguise. Now that you’ve answered the question of whether you and Suri are

right for each other (whether your attraction toward Big Sister played a role is irrelevant), it is perfectly reasonable to give it a few weeks, approach the shadchan who originally set you up with Suri, and fully explain the situation. There is no reason to feel guilty; remember, you are on a quest to find your zivug. If you think you and Big Sis were meant for each other, then there’s only one way to find out. Being involved in shidduchim has shown me time and time again that the hashgacha pratis involved has no bounds! This could just be one of those “crazy” stories that actually works out. Realize that the shidduch process is a journey. By the time you meet your zivug, every date you will have gone on will have taught you indelible lessons that will have brought you closer to your bashert. The above events helped

Maybe her sister seems so appealing because in the moment she was the forbidden fruit or maybe there was something special in how the two of you connected. But you’ll never get a shot at possibly knowing if you don’t at least try.

’m putting my dating coach hat on for this one. Therapist hat is tossed. No, you’re not a bad guy. You’re human. Unless you told me that this happens all the time and you enjoy dating the sisters of the women you have dated, I have no reason to suspect you are a “bad guy.” If anything, writing in and asking the question shows me that you are torn. You have feelings. You have a conscience. You’re a good guy! This situation must be approached with extreme sensitivity. Suri and the woman you are interested in are sisters. They may be close, or they may be competitive, or they may be both. Even if Suri will be happy for her sister, there will be a feeling of disappointment that it isn’t her. That’s just human nature.

I agree w ith Sarah Schwar tz Schreiber in that I, too, feel as though something fishy may have been going on when they had their other daughter present for the meeting. There are other alternatives that include optimism or naivete. I feel pretty conflicted about sharing the following analogy, but here I go. Have you ever gone into an ice cream shop wanting a scoop of delicious cookies ‘n cream but then you get there and you see the brownie a la mode? And now you’re not so sure. Why put out the delicious Brownies a la Mode when it’s time for the delightful Cookies ‘n Cream to shine? I’m

not comparing women to ice cream. If you were a woman writing in about two brothers, the same analogy would apply. Regardless of why she was there, she was. And you like her. You can’t stop thinking about her. Your first step is to speak with the shadchan and tell him/her the situation. Make it very clear that Suri is a lovely young woman but you don’t feel the connection. I recommend taking our shadchan’s advice about how to proceed in your quest to date Suri’s sister. Approach the eventual conversation humbly and modestly. You may even want to tell her about your discomfort pursuing this. This will highlight your awareness and will signal to the family that you are not a “bad guy,” but a good guy with a conscience. Ask if the family would be open to you dating their other daugh-

ter. Tell her that everyone’s comfort level is of paramount importance to you. Understand though, that sometimes family dynamics are complicated, so they may not give you the green light. I hope the family allows the date to happen! Robert Kraft A Story of Brady, Belichick and Israel By Susan Schwamm

s America gears up for another Super Bowl, viewers will once again either smile or look chagrined at the sight of the ageless 41-year-old quarterback Tom Brady and his hoodie-wearing genius head coach on the sidelines, Bill Belichik. It seems like this duo has some secret recipe that nobody else can seem to figure out. “This year, they are too injured,” “now they are too old, “they no longer have a deep threat” are common refrains amongst sports aficionados early in the season, and yet Brady and Belichick prove them wrong time and time again. Even when they are defeated in the Super Bowl, it often requires last minute heroics by the opposing team, such as catching the ball with a helmet, to win over Brady and his team. A common sight in the last minute of the Super Bowl featuring the Patriots is when the camera pans up to a booth way above the stadium. In the booth sits an older gentleman with a pristine white shirt, a solid colored tie, a deep suntan and a large smile – on the brink of another ring. That man, Robert Kraft, may be the secret to this dynasty’s success. You see, Kraft is the chef who came up with this victorious recipe. Kraft, who is Jewish and went to Hebrew school, purchased the Patriots two decades ago for a then-record price of $172 million. Before Kraft purchased the Patriots, the team was in disarray and bounced around to different owners. In the five seasons before

Kraft purchased the team, the Patriots were 19-61. Since Kraft took over, the Patriots have won 18 division titles, nine conference crowns and five Super Bowl championships. Today, the Patriots are the sixth most valuable sports franchise in the world and are worth an estimated $3.8 billion, according to Forbes. The two now-obvious picks which turned around the Patriots are Brady and Belichick. But when Kraft made the decision to choose these two, they were far from obvious. Brady, who is now considered by many to be the best quarterback in the history of the NFL, was chosen by the Patriots in the 6th round of the 2000 NFL draft. Today, Brady is the only player from that draft who is still playing for the team that drafted him. And today he is no longer the scrawny kid who was passed over 198 times before finally being picked, but a future first-ballot Hall of Famer who holds the record with 207 regular season wins. Kraft often reminisces about his first encounter with Tom Brady after picking him. “I still have the image of Tom Brady coming down the old Foxboro Stadium steps with that pizza box under his arm, a skinny beanpole,” Kraft often quips verbatim. “When he introduced himself and said, ‘Hi, Mr. Kraft,’ and he was about to say who he was, and I [said], ‘I know who you are, Tom Brady, you’re our sixth-round draft choice.’ And he looked me in the eye and said, ‘And I’m the best decision this organization has ever made.’” After repeating that story, Kraft inevitably adds that Brady is, in fact, the greatest of

all time. When asked about the story in a recent interview, Brady laughed and said, “I’m not sure I said it like that — we dispute that all the time. I think I said, ‘I don’t think you’ll ever regret picking me’ but he remembers it differently.” Despite their divergent recollections of their initial encounters, Brady considers Kraft “like a second father.” In 2018 he told a sports interviewer about Kraft that “he’s been part of so many important events in my life… I love him like a dad.” Whereas not much thought was given at the time to the sixth-round draft pick, Kraft’s choice of Bill Belichik as head coach in 2000 was more questionable. Although he had been in various coaching positions in the NFL since 1979, Belichik’s only real stint as a head coach was not very impressive – from 1991 to 1995 he led the Cleveland Browns to a subpar record of 36-44, with only one winning season. Even more, Belichik had accepted the job as the head coach of the Jets and quit that job one day into it, resulting in the New York press referring to him as “Belichicken” and “Belichick Arnold.” The NFL even ruled that Belichick had breached his contract with the Jets by quitting and prohibited him from coaching in 2000 without the Jets’ consent or compensation. Kraft reached an agreement with the Jets to allow Belichik to take the New England head coaching job in return for New England’s first-round pick the following year and several later round picks over the following years. Within two years of these picks made by Kraft,

Robert was born in Brookline, Massachusetts; Myra was born in Worcester. Massachusetts was, and still is, a state close to their hearts. Ever since he first visited Israel in 1963 on their honeymoon, Robert’s love of the Jewish State remains deep. Connecting teenagers in their state to the land that they love is a duty that the Krafts have

taken upon themselves. But it’s not just teenagers whom they bring to visit the Holy Land. The Krafts have helped to bring myriad people to Israel, including NFL players who have only read or heard about the Holy Land in the Bible. Barry Shrage, who was the president of Boston’s Combined Jewish Philanthropies, recalled Myra and Robert’s love for the Holy Land to the Times of Israel. “Robert loves taking people to Israel,” Shrage told the outlet. “Myra was completely in love with the country. Every stone, every rock, every tree. And she knew all their names. “It was a way for her to express her intense feeling of love for the country. It was very important to her… She really was a beautiful person.” Myra would take groups of participants to tour the land, even bringing hundreds during the Second Intifada, when many tourists would have stayed away. She would implore local storeowners to keep their stores open late so she could bring groups to their shops to help support the struggling businesses. Myra was also influential in the plight of Ethiopian Jews, helping to bring them to the Jewish State and chastising politicians who she felt were not working hard enough on their behalf. The Krafts are credited with supporting American-style football in Israel. Aside for building the $6 million Kraft Family Sports Campus in Jerusalem, which has two soccer fields and a football field (and is located off of “Kvish Achad [Road 1], much as Gillette Stadium, where the Patriots play, is located off of Route 1), Robert Kraft has donated tens of millions of dollars towards Israeli and Jewish causes. He also sees it as his mission to change the way the world views Israel. To that end, he has arranged several missions to Israel with NFL Hall of Famers. “I was on a trip to Canton, Ohio, and I visited the Hall of Fame. I thought to myself that these people are like modern gladiators; people in America worship them. They have the same value as a year’s worth

t the 2017 ribbon cutting ceremony at the Kraft Family Sports Campus in Jerusalem, Kraft noted, “My late, darling wife, Myra, always used to tell me that until I start building football in Israel, I would not win anything with Patriots.” He added, “That happened in late 1999, and we won our first Super Bowl in 2001. Now we have five championships, and I can’t ignore the connection between our continuing to support development in Israel and our great accomplishments.” Myra, who passed away in 2011 from cancer, was resolute about supporting charities. Her heart was connected to causes that promoted Jewish causes and helped raise the esteem of Israel in the world’s eyes. According to the Boston Globe, “So involved was Mrs. Kraft in philanthropy that perhaps her biggest worry when her husband bought the Patriots in 1994 was that the large sums of money spent and borrowed would curtail their giving. He assured her they wouldn’t.” Robert, it seems, continues to keep his promise. Myra’s love for Israel started at a young age. Her father, Jacob Hiatt, escaped the Holocaust by emigrating from Lithuania to the United States in the mid-1930s. He lost his parents, brother, and sisters in the concentration camps. When Myra was 5 years old, in 1948, her father visited the DP camps in Europe and then traveled to Israel, which was on the cusp of becoming a state.

Young Myra wanted to help him in supporting the Jewish state-to-be at home in Worcester. “One morning I got up, took a bag, and decided to go out to the neighborhood to raise money for the poor children in Europe and Palestine,” she told the Jerusalem Post in 2008. “I went door to door. My mother was getting frantic because I was late and she had no idea where I was. I came in dragging this sack of money.” By the time Robert purchased the Patriots, Myra was supporting philanthropic causes in the millions

the New England Patriots won their first-ever Super Bowl. Over the next 15 years, they appeared in seven other Super Bowls and won four of them. Next Sunday, they will once again play for the Lombardi Trophy. But, according to Kraft, there is more to victory than just Brady and Belichik. There is also Israel.

Ahead of his 2015 trip with nineteen Hall of Famers, Kraft said, “[Myra] and I started doing this a long time ago, taking different people to Israel. We wanted them to see what it really was, not how the media sometimes portrays it.” Former Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson told ESPN.com that Myra invited him and his wife to tour the land when she was sick. “I remember sitting in the training room with her one day; we were both getting treatment, and she invited [my wife] Kirsten and I to Israel with her and Mr. Kraft,” Watson recalled. “I thought she was kidding, but that’s the kind of person she was: so gracious, generous and hospitable. “I specifically remember how comfortable she made us feel. We did not know most of the people on the trip but she went out of her way to introduce us to everyone, like we were her kids, as well as educating us on the many places we visited,” Watson remembered. “I also didn’t realize what a sense of humor she had. She and our tour guide had us rolling.” In 2006, Tom Brady joined Robert on Tom’s first visit to Israel. During the Friday night dinner, which was led by a Chabad rabbi, some members of the group got up to dance. Brady joined in. “He was enormously moved,” said one participant. During that visit, Brady visited an IDF base, where he met soldiers and saw a demonstration of weapons being fired. When asked by soldiers if he would play football with them, Brady responded wryly, “I don’t mix business with pleasure.” Brady, who is not Jewish, keeps a menorah in his Brookline home. His trip with Kraft seems to have been inspirational. During his 2015 trip to Israel, Robert told the crowd the impetus behind his urge to share the Holy Land with others. “I grew up in a traditional family,” he said. “I put on tefillin when I was young. My first trip to Israel was in 1963, for my honeymoon, and I remember how angry I was when I looked out the balcony at the King David Hotel and saw armed Jorda-

nian soldiers keeping me from visiting the holy sites.” After the 2015 trip, former Viking Paul Krause, who retired in 1979 and still owns the NFL record for career interceptions, recalled an experience he had on the expedition. “We were signing autographs one night and this older guy came up to me and says, ‘So, you’re the one who has 81 interceptions?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I’m very proud of that.’ He says, ‘Well, I want to tell you something. I have 1,700 interceptions.’” Krause explained, “He was the guy who invented the Iron Dome, which protects Israel from missiles. He’s got 1,700 hits on missiles coming into Jerusalem. I told him, ‘Your 1,700 interceptions are a heck of a lot more useful than my 81.’” In 2017, Kraft took another group of Hall of Famers, including Jim Brown, Marshall Faulk, Gerome Bettis, Joe Montana, John Stallworth and Roger Staubach, to the Holy Land. After the trip, Bettis, AKA “The Bus,” reflected on his trip and said, “One thing that was resounding was the resolve of the Jewish people.” The Pittsburgh Steelers iconic halfback added, “The message that you get – outside of the things that happened in each person’s individual life – was their love with the state of Israel, their country. Addiction is in the Brain By Rabbi Azriel Hauptman Addiction is a malady that affects many segments of society and our community. People who do not suffer from an addiction often wonder why the addict can’t just stop. Can’t he see that he is destroying his life and the lives of his family? Addiction cannot be understood unless we understand the brain mechanism behind it. We will try to explain it in simple English. The brain has a “reward system” that is pivotal to our survival. This system identifies “rewards” and then triggers a cycle of desire and pleasure in order to achieve it. For example, food offers a reward which is survival as we cannot live without food. In order to achieve that reward, our brain makes us feel strong feelings of desire for the food and a sense of pleasure after ingesting it. There are two different types of

rewards. There are primary rewards which are necessary for our survival or that of our family. There are also secondary rewards which are rewards that offer us pleasure but are not essential for our existence. This would include anything from taking a nature walk to having a nice time with your friends. The primary rewards elicit very powerful feelings of desire and pleasure since it is crucial that these rewards are achieved. Secondary rewards do not carry the same level of desire and pleasure since understandably it is not the end of the world if these rewards are not attained. What happens when your brain becomes confused and misidentifies a secondary reward as a primary reward? You have an addiction. Let us first use food to illustrate this point since it is somewhat easier to understand. When one has a shortage of

food, then food represents survival. It is understandable that the brain will generate strong feelings of desire and pleasure to compel the person to get food. When one consistently overeats, the brain does not know that the ingested food was “extra”. If the person is eating this much food it must be for survival since food generally is for survival. With the reward system of the brain compromised, the person can feel an urge to eat that is as strong as someone who is truly suffering from food shortage. Now let us move into substances. Addictive substances offer a person very powerful sensations of pleasure, euphoria, and bliss. When one is in that state, all of his problems feel as if they have disappeared. In reality, nothing has changed but that is the feeling one can experience when under the influence of these substances.

The reward system of the brain is not working with intelligence and here too the brain can be tricked into thinking that this substance truly solves all of your problems. What can be more critical and essential than that?! Your reward system has found the solution to all of your trials and tribulations! With your reward system now believing that this substance is as important to your survival as water in the Sahara desert, we now have a bona fide addiction. This is what we mean when we say that addictions are a disorder of the brain. This is a service of Relief Resources. Dirshu Siyumim at Homes of Senior Gedolei Yisrael of Eretz Yisrael in Dirshu’s Daf HaYomi B’Halacha Program By Chaim Gold

In each home, there was a siyum on Chelek Gimmel of Mishnah Berurah that covers hilchos Shabbos, as well as a haschala, a beginning of Chelek Daled on Masechta Eruvin. And airport gift shops stock Sudoku puzzles to pass the hours in the sky. We love puzzles so much that someone found their way to a basement office in Washington where the Department of Bogus Holidays litters our calendars with junk celebrations like National Talk Like Yoda Day (May 21) and National Eat Your Beans Day (July 3), and made it official. And so Tuesday, January 29 will be #NationalPuzzleDay. Most people think of puzzles as trivial diversions. But planning to avoid taxes is a puzzle, too. ere we go again! Or is it that we don’t go again? Or where to go again? School vacation is in the air. And parents and kids are struggling once more with how to fill that free time. What are the choices? Get away?! Do day trips?! Stay home and kvetch that there’s nothing to do? Every kid needs a break. But how to spend that time is a real challenge. If you’re a ski family, you’ve sort of got it made. No family member really ages out of this sport. And then you just throw on seven hundred layers of clothes. Plus a helmet, goggles, klutzy shoes, massive gloves, robbery-ready facemask, and assorted body warmers and you’re good to go clunking along. Shlep, shvitz, shoe plant, and you’re ready to add the skis to the base of the getup. Then it’s off to the top of the world with the winds blowing at your back or assaulting your face. And then, swoosh, you’re off the lift, ready for the euphoric trip down the mountain racing and traversing all the way or alternatively winging it with intervals of flopping into the icy snow. Either way, you’re doing your thing and enjoying the great outdoors.

And then comes the end of the ski day, and once again it is shlep, shvitz, shoe plant, but this time it’s soothed with hot chocolate in hand and you’re feeling quite accomplished and spent. Any activity you do after that, even just making it to the nearest couch, makes you feel like a major hero. You’ve given it 100% all day, so even if you don’t move a muscle

The kids’ lips got so frozen together they couldn’t move them to complain! So, wherever you go and whatever you do on your school break, just remember: these are the good times! Much of the Super Bowl hype has become focused on the food served while watching the game. Besides the oversized sandwiches that have become an integral part of Super Bowl fare, as a host you might also want to add a soup bar. People can choose their own soups and add assorted toppings, such as croutons, soups nuts, terra chips, roasted chickpeas, and crunchy onions. I’m sharing two hearty soups for you to try this Sunday, plus a much lighter soup.

Meat and Cabbage Soup Meat • Yields 10 servings • Freezer friendly Ingredients

Preparation In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, sear flanken on each side for 2-3 minutes, until meat releases from the pot. Crush tomatoes lightly in your hand; then add the tomatoes and their liquid to pot. Add the apple, sugar, lemon juice, water, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce to a simmer. Cook for about two hours, until meat is tender. Remove meat from soup. Discard bones; shred meat into bite-size pieces. Return the meat to the soup and re-boil to warm the meat again. Add salt and pepper to taste, as needed.

Strawberry Shortcake What You Will Need: 7 eggs- separated 1 cup sugar- divided juice of 1 lemon ½ cup potato starch

¼ cup cake meal 16 oz. Rich Whip- defrosted 1 quart strawberries, cleaned 3 Tbl. sugar Preperation:

1. Pre-heat oven to 300 degrees.

2. To make cake: Beat egg whites until foamy. continue to beat until stiff. Set aside.

Add ¼ cup sugar, and

3. In another bowl, beat yolks for 2 minutes. Add ¾ cup of sugar, and continue to beat until light and golden. Add lemon juice, potato starch, and cake meal. When incorporated, slowly add stiffly beaten egg whites. Pour into ungreased 10 inch tube pan. Bake in pre-heated oven for 30 minutes. Increase heat to 325 degrees and bake for 15 minutes more. When medium brown, remove from oven and invert onto table until completely cooled. 4. To make filling, cut cake in half through diameter. Beat Rich Whip and add 3 Tbl sugar, and beat until stiff and glossy. Put ½ of the whipped cream into another bowl. Cut up ½ of the strawberries and add to the whipped cream in the bowl. Smear the strawberry-cream mixture onto the bottom layer of the cake. Place top layer over cream mixture, and spread rest of whipped cream on top. Decorate with the remaining strawberries, as shown. Enjoy!
