Dear Readers, On Chanukah, my son took a trip to a local nursing home where his class sang and entertained the residents. The feedback was understandably phenomenal as they were able to ignite a little spark of nostalgia and some happiness into the elderly men and women. The boys worked hard to prepare, and were excited to venture out and entertain them. It was an opportunity for these children to break out of their comfortable confines to do a chesed. While the recipients of this chesed enjoyed a fine performance, it was the boys that came away with so much more. They felt good about what they did and are certainly better off for it. I remember when I was a child, our class did the very same thing. It was a nice break for us as we spent many hours of class time preparing the songs and performance; perfecting the words of Oyfn Pripetshik and other Yiddish classics along with some nifty dance moves. For me though, I reflect on that time as one of the highlights of my youth. My Rebbe, Rabbi Moshe Juravel, selected me to be the “conductor” for this concert. I was not the most well-behaved or studious boy in the class and was most likely not deserving of such a lofty position. Yet, with the keen eyes of a Master Mechanech, he was able to identify a boy who needed a little chizzuk. I embraced that job and delivered a masterful performance (wearing a gold hat, I faced the other boys and waved my hand back and forth like a conductor). This event carried me for some time and I still reflect back fondly at that moment. The school year is so focused on the classroom (that’s what school is for after all!) that a small trip, especially for a mitzvah or chesed, can provide needed relief for both the student and teacher. It may allow the children to be viewed in a new light and strengthen the relationship between teacher and student. If Rabbeim, Morahs, and teachers use this time to empower a class, it can become a powerful “teaching moment.” A moment that lasts a lifetime! Aaron Menachem

Menucha celebrated Chanukah with 2 amazing parties on Tuesday night! The first was a family party, featuring dreidel games with prizes, donut decorating, crafts, a story, and of course delicious Chanukah food. The families, kids, and volunteers had an amazing time, having fun with their extended Menucha family. Special thank you to the volunteers who helped make this event a success. At the same time, the young men who attend Menucha's Tuesday Mishmar program were invited to their Rebbi's home for a Chanukah Mesibah. They enjoyed their regular shiur, followed by a participant dvar Torah, a story from Rabbi Spero, and dancing.

Jewish Community Football League (by Shimz Cars) completes season number 10 Berkshire Bulldogs 12 The Construction Company 6 On November 21st, 2021, on a cold and crisp Sunday morning, numerous “JCFL by Shimz Cars” fans showed up to the beautiful ActualEyes fields at Pikesville Middle School, to cheer on the players of the Berkshire Bulldogs and The Construction Company, as each team vied for a win in the “JCFL Championship” by Chef Dan. The first-place Bulldogs entered the game with the league’s longest winning streak, pulling out a win in their previous 6 matches. Also of note, Berkshire’s star WR, Shulie Hochman, had collected 5 championship rings over the league’s 9 year history and was hoping to claim title number 6 in this Championship X. Both teams recognized immediately that this would be a hard-fought battle and that defense would be critical on both sides of the ball. Would the dominant defensive line of The Construction Company make the difference in the game? Or would it be the depth and speed of Berkshire’s WR corps that would give them the edge? That was all to be determined. On The Construction Company’s first drive, Berkshire CB Moshe Reches jumped a route and picked off TCC’s QB Dan Gutman to get things started for the Bulldogs. Berkshire’s QB, Moshe Tuchman (playing in his second championship game but first as a QB) took over on offense but following dominant pressures by The Construction Company defensive line of Simi Willner and Ben Gutman, the Bulldogs would turn the

ball over on downs. As predicted, the story of the game was defense with both QBs having to fend off heavy pressure while both secondaries consistently shut down passing lanes. As a result, the first number of drives resulted in no scoring. But Tuchman regrouped and led a game-changing drive, hitting Shulie Hochman 3 plays in a row, which ultimately set up a TE roll out by Avromi Freund to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead. The Bulldogs would hold that lead going into half time. Early in the second half, The Construction Company struck back as Dan Gutman connected with multiple WRs and then hit his brother, TE Ben Gutman, for a red zone score, tying the game at 6-6.

But it was all defense from that point forward. With 3 minutes remaining in the game, The Construction Company drove the ball downfield and were in the red zone, but a sack and then a fourth down INT by rookie CB Mookie Chamdi shut down that scoring opportunity and for the first time in JCFL history, a championship went into overtime. After winning the OT coin flip, the Bulldogs elected to receive the ball and Tuchman took no time getting the ball to a 3rd down and 1. With a perfect play call, Tuchman hit on his first deep ball of the game to Mookie Chamdi for a game-winning/championship winning TD. Ultimately, the story of the game

was the Bulldogs red zone defense and their ability to avoid turnovers on offense. Moshe Tuchman and Ouriel Nafisi gave up zero deep balls in the secondary, while Chamdi, Hochman, Reches, and Moshe Guttman shut down the middle of the field, allowing defensive linemen Avromi Freund and Shimmy Feintuch to collect 5 sacks on the day. For those tracking JCFL stats, this is the first time since the opening season that a rookie QB won the championship. Congrats to the Berkshire Bulldogs on a great season! The league wants to extend a thank you to all the players and sponsors as well as the refereeing crews and league committee for another successful season.

Mrs. Sara Schachter, The Shidduch Center Our Board ranges from volunteers whose children aren’t nearly old enough to date, to those whose children are all long married. The common denominator among us is a strong desire to address this vital need, and to be a part of helping our single men and women find their bshert, bez’H.

We recently caught up with Mrs. Sara Schachter, long-time Executive Board member of The Shidduch Center of Baltimore, to learn about their excellent work.

What makes the Shidduch Center of Baltimore unique and special? We exist solely to help our city’s single men and women. We were of the first communities, if not the first, to create this type of shidduch-centric organization. BH, other cities have recently created similar organizations. Most of them have consulted with us, and many of them are based on our model. We are proud that our community leaders and members understand the importance of making this objective a priority. Does everyone on your Board have children in shidduchim?

How exactly are these results produced? The brunt of those results come through our outstanding team of shadchanim (Mrs. Shani Leiman, Mrs. Tova Rappaport, Mrs. Keren Traub, and Mrs. Yocheved Strum), all of whom are employed by The Shidduch Center with the express objective of devoting their time and attention first and foremost to Baltimoreans. They each have quotas of production - far exceeding what they ever did before working for us - ensuring that we are constantly generating greater opportunity for our community, bez’H, and

Who provides oversight, leadership, and guidance for The Shidduch Center? We have a profoundly dedicated Executive Board of Directors - Eliezer Portnoy is our current Chairman, past Chairmen are Steve Graber, Dr. Joel Pleeter and Chaim Wealcatch, and Sora Wolasky, Yitzie Pretter, Naftali Langer, Meyer Berman, and I all sit on the Executive Board. We also turn to our Rabbinical Board - Rabbi Yaakov Hopfer, Rabbi Moshe Hauer, Rabbi Dovid Heber, Rabbi Menachem Goldberger, and Rabbi Jonathan Seidemann - for crucial direction. And then there is our Executive Director, Rabbi Shlomo Goldberger. He is at the forefront of all that we do, and it’s his responsibility to ensure that we’re always active and growing. How have you have seen The Shidduch Center evolve over the years? I was involved before Rabbi Shlomo Goldberger was brought on, and have watched the organization truly soar to new heights, BH. Besides the many events, initiatives, and programs he runs,

he makes himself available to any dater or parent who wants to meet, answering all manner of questions and concerns relating to shidduchim. He is now interfacing with about 150 local families each year. We have also been exploring different avenues over the years to better serve those in our community who have been in shidduchim for some time, and we hope to be inaugurating a new initiative in this area very soon, bez’H. How can community members best connect with The Shidduch Center’s shadchanim? Ideally, through the contact forms on our website, www.shidduchcenter. org/our-shadchanim/. However, we will soon be launching a new and improved system for connecting and staying in touch with our shadchanim. Bez’H, this will be an essential step forward in our development and ability to be there for our local families in shidduchim. I understand The Shidduch Center is running a crowdfunding campaign on December 19th and 20th. What can our community do to help? Indeed, we are. This campaign is our major annual fundraiser, and a great opportunity for community members to partner in our efforts to help Baltimore families. Please give generously, and encourage your friends to give. You have all made a tremendous impact with our prior campaigns, and the results mentioned above are only possible thanks to you, our generous community members. We’re counting on you this year, too. But more importantly, our single men and women are counting on you.

In short, what is The Shidduch Center? We are a true community organization, and our mission is to generate and facilitate dating opportunities for Baltimore’s single men and women. All of our efforts are focused with that goal in mind. Our door is also always open, warmly welcoming Baltimore families to approach us with any dating related needs, questions, or concerns.

How does our community benefit from The Shidduch Center? Thanks to tremendous siyata DiShmaya, we have set up over 1,200 couples on dates, resulting in 120 marriages for Baltimoreans. This 10% engagement-to-date ratio is of the highest among shidduch initiatives worldwide. We also present regular educational and chizuk events, and offer personal guidance and resources to hundreds of families each year, answering common questions regarding the process, and delicately working through major challenges when difficulties arise. These events have been wonderful tools to augment the work of our team and have created many dates and engagements for our community.

Targeting the ADF in the DR Congo

Troops from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo are working together to combat Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which are being accused of massacres in DR Congo and bombings in Uganda. Still, Congo’s President Felix Tsh-

isekedi pledged this week that Ugandan forces in the country will be there just when it’s “strictly necessary” and not for more time, he told his nation in an annual address. The offensive against the deadliest militia in the east of the DRC has seen 34 rebels captured, 31 hostages freed, and four enemy camps destroyed, the two armies said on Saturday. Sunday’s address was the first time Tshisekedi had officially mentioned the presence of Ugandan troops in his country. After 25 years of violence, he had put the eastern provinces of North Kivu and Ituri under a “state of siege” in May, when soldiers replaced civil servants in key positions. The president asserted that “no effort will be spared to restore peace and security”. He noted that the ADF also operate in Uganda and the joint border area and said the state of siege had “moved the lines” and seen former enemy bastions recaptured. Fine for Tour de France Toppler A Tour de France spectator who caused a rider pileup earlier this year has been ordered to pay a fine of $1,350 (1,300 euros). Gas Tanker Explodes in Haiti WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, 50, has reportedly suffered a stroke in prison. He is being held at the high-security Belmarsh Prison in the UK. A court ruling has ordered his extradition to the U.S. The stroke reportedly left Assange with a drooping right eyelid, memory problems, and signs of neurological damage. Former resident Chani Smucha, 59, whose parents, siblings, and siblings’ families were recently evicted from the neighborhood, told the Times of Israel, “They never invested in this area. We

made our own post office boxes. They never even installed a park bench for an old person to sit on.” After the first 80 families were evicted in 2014, authorities refused to clean up the piles of debris and refuse. “The trash was left where it was so people would suffer and leave,” Smucha explained. Founded in 1947 by a group of immigrants who had been asked by David Ben Gurion to settle the area, the neighborhood’s residents included mostly the original settlers and their descendants. After the war, the neighborhood’s residents sought to purchase the land, but they were ignored, and the State instead sold the land to developers in 1961. In 1992, a deal was reached to evacuate the western portion of the neighborhood, Givat Amal Alef, to allow the construction of three towers. The rights to Givat Amal Bet changed hands until 2005, after which a legal battle ensued. In April, a court ruling ordered the developer to pay three million shekel for each of the 11 plots which had been occupied in 1961. The sum was to be divided among the remaining families. But residents say the money – which amounts to 1-2 million shekel per family – is not enough to purchase suitable housing in the area. “We have the compensation, but we’re still deciding what to do with it — to rent, to buy?” Smucha asked. “With this kind of amount, what can we do? Where will I take [my parents] — to Dimona, to Beersheba? Where will I take them? These are people who’ve lived in Tel Aviv their whole lives.” The sum has also been reduced by legal fees and deductions for overstaying their time on the land. Residents were only told they would be forcibly evicted on November 14, one day before it occurred, they said. According to Smucha, on November 15, approximately 1,000 police officers arrived to evict the 32 families. Some families left on their own, but others were removed in what two residents said was a “violent” fashion. She emphasized, “We were in shock over the amount of police. We didn’t understand why all of this was necessary. Good people, salt of the earth. Not criminals, not squatters, not causing trouble.”

The United States has rejected Israel’s request to deliver two tanker planes ahead of schedule. Israel has ordered four KC-46 advanced tanker planes from the U.S., but the aircraft are only scheduled to arrive in Israel in four years. Senior Air Force officers have requested that two of the craft be delivered within the next few months, and the other two be delivered within two to three years. According to Ynet, the IDF hopes to convince the U.S. within the next year. The tankers will replace Israel’s Re’em (Boeing 707) tankers, which are used for long-range missions, but which were grounded last year due to age. The KC-46s can remain in the air for 11 hours and travel over 11,830 kilometers.

Israeli security forces have arrested 11 students from An-Najah National University in Nablus who are suspected of supporting the Hamas terror group on campus. According to the Israeli army’s Arabic-language spokesman, the 11 suspects were members of the university’s Islamic Bloc, a Hamas-affiliated organization that exists on many Palestinian campuses. The spokesman, Lt. Col. Avihay Adraee, said the students were suspected of transferring funds to Hamas, organizing pro-Hamas rallies, and spreading propaganda for the terror group “under the supervision and guidance of senior Hamas officials.” Israeli security officials have expressed increasing concern that Hamas may be gathering strength in the West Bank as the Palestinian Authority faces rock-bottom approval ratings and rapidly dwindling legitimacy.

College Students Arrested for Supporting Hamas

Israel and the PA – which exercises limited self-rule in parts of the West Bank – cooperate to crack down on Hamas and other Palestinian terror groups. Hamas avowedly seeks Israel’s destruction. It fought a bloody civil war with the PA’s dominant Fatah faction in 2007. The West Bank has recently seen an uptick in violent clashes between Palestinians on the streets and PA security forces. The PA has sought to disperse events at which Hamas flags were raised over the past few days, clashing with Palestinians in Tulkarem on Sunday when supporters gathered to greet a Hamas member who had just been released from Israeli prison. Palestinian Authority forces also clashed with locals during the Monday funeral of Nablus resident Jamil Kayyal, who was allegedly killed by Israeli forces during a raid the previous night. The Israeli army said that Kayyal, 31, had been part of a group that had thrown Molotov cocktails at troops as they entered the city. After the attempted dispersal, a few hundred Palestinians were seen marching through the streets calling the Palestinian security forces “snitches” for Israel. Israeli forces also arrested senior Hamas official Hassan Yousef, one of the terror group’s West Bank leaders, on Monday morning, according to the Shin Bet security service. Yousef has been in and out of Israeli jail for years; he had just been released in July after spending nearly a year behind bars without charges. A spokesperson for the Shin Bet said that Yousef had been arrested on Monday for “renewed terror involvement.”

Israel is concerned that the U.S. has a secret communications channel with Iran and that the Biden administration will agree to a flawed nuclear deal, allowing Iran to freely continue its nuclear enrichment program. Meanwhile, the U.S. government said this week that Biden two months ago asked national security adviser Jake Sullivan to review the revised Pentagon plan for military action against Iran. Administration officials also outlined new efforts to tighten sanctions on Iran. According to the Times, U.S. officials say that Israel’s concerns are unfounded because a partial deal is “not actively being considered, at least for now, because of Iran’s unwillingness to engage.” Still, the Times emphasized, Israeli officials are not satisfied, and instead worry that the U.S. and Iran will reach a deal – and then seek to block Israeli intelligence services from carrying out attacks. The Israelis now want a guarantee from Washington that there will be no restraints on their actions, even if a deal is reached between Iran and the U.S.

On Monday, the United States reached a grim milestone when it was reported that more than 800,000 Americans have died from Covid-19 since the pandemic was declared. There have been at least 800,156 confirmed deaths traced to the coronavirus, according to a rolling tally by NBC News. That’s more deaths reported than in any other nation. Thirty-three states and the U.S. Virgin Islands have seen an increase in deaths over the last 14 days. According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the seven-day death average in the U.S. was 1,092, a 27.8 percent increase from the week be-

fore. The first known Americans to have died from coronavirus passed away in February 2020. Dr. Vin Gupta, a critical care pulmonologist and affiliate associate professor at the University of Washington, expects the U.S. death toll to reach 1 million at some point in 2022. “That’s just the reality of the situation,” he said. “The same people who didn’t get an initial shot won’t get boosters. It’s a lot of preventable death.” In total, the U.S. has recorded nearly 50 million cases of the virus since the pandemic began.

Smollett Found Guilty

On Thursday, actor Jussie Smollett was found guilty of five felony counts of disorderly conduct. The sixth count was of making a false police report that he was the victim of aggravated battery. According to one juror, it was the sixth count that caused jurors to struggle. In the end, according to the juror who spoke with the Chicago SunTimes, they “all thought we were doing Jussie a favor.” Smollett had told police in January 2019 that he was the victim of a racist crime. He said that two Trump-loving bigots beat him up, tied a noose around his neck, and doused him in bleach on a freezing night. But after a quick investigation, police found that Smollett fabricated the attack. He had hired brothers Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, whom he knew from his TV show, to stage the attack to garner attention. It took jurors almost ten hours to come to their verdict, which Smollett’s lawyer said they would appeal. For now, it is likely that Smollett will be sentenced to probation, given his lack of criminal history.

The Week In News

Over 30 tornadoes raging Friday night and early Saturday across the central and southern U.S. brought down buildings and may have claimed 80 lives. According to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, that state alone may have over 70 people dead from the storms.

Tornados Wreak Havoc

A federal panel has approved the renaming of Squaw Mountain in Colorado. The move follows the declaration of the word “squaw” to be a derogatory term against Native American women. The mountain’s new name will be Mestaa’ėhehe Mountain, named after a famed female Native American translator who lived in the region in the early 1800s. The woman was known at the time as “Owl Woman,” and she was responsible for mediating between Native Americans and white settlers around southern Colorado. “Squaw” is an Algonquin word for woman, but over time it has been used for racist and misogynistic attacks on Native American women, according to Newsweek. In a statement, Northern Cheyenne Tribal Historic Preservation Office Director Teanna Limpy said, “A derogatory name that is meant to diminish the sacredness and power of our women is no more. Mestaa’ėhehe will be standing tall on that mountain for many generations to come, continuing to be a story of inspiration for all and perhaps a story that also inspires others to continue to learn other Indigenous cultures and languages.”

Among the buildings damaged in the strike are a candle factory in Mayfield, Kentucky and an Amazon warehouse in western Illinois, as well as a nursing home in Arkansas. The tornadoes hit at least six states: Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee. On Saturday morning, Beshear said, “I’m pretty sure that number [killed in Kentucky] is north of 70 ... it may, in fact exceed 100 before the day is done. The level of devastation is unlike anything I have ever seen.” In a later statement, Beshear said, “I want to thank every local emergency management employee, police officer, firefighter and first responder. This has been one of the toughest nights in Kentucky history. It’s hard to put into words.

Paper Power

Elon Musk has been named Time’s Person of the Year, and he truly makes the grade. Recently, a college paper graded by Musk two decades ago nabbed thousands at auction. RR Auctions said the papers, which were written in 1995 by then-student Brian Thomas, were graded by the Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder when he was a teacher’s assistant for Professor Myles Bass at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. The papers are marked, graded, and initialed by Musk, who etched only one comment on the documents – the word “graphic” in response to a profanity used by the student. The college papers fetched $7,753 from an unknown buyer. Thomas didn’t even realize he was holding onto such a treasure. He doesn’t remember Musk being in the

class, but he had held onto the papers over the years because of his fond memories of Bass. His son noticed the papers had been graded by the now-famous businessman. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

Botox at Camel Competition

If Sally the camel was scared of the competition at Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz Camel Festival, she may have felt the pressure to have her face done. But she should stay far away from the Botox if she knows what’s good for her. This year, Saudi authorities conducted their biggest-ever crackdown on camel beauty contestants that received Botox injections and other artificial touch-ups. Over 40 camels were disqualified from the annual pageant because of work that was done on the animals. The festival, which kicked off earlier this month, invites the breeders of the most beautiful camels to compete for some $66 million in prize money. Botox injections, face lifts, and other cosmetic alterations to make the camels more attractive are strictly prohibited. Jurors decide the winner based on the shape of the camels’ heads, necks, humps, dress, and postures. This year, authorities discovered dozens of breeders had stretched out the lips and noses of camels, used hormones to boost the beasts’ muscles, injected camels’ heads and lips with Botox to make them bigger, inflated body parts with rubber bands, and used fillers to relax their faces. The camel beauty contest is at the heart of the massive carnival, which also features camel races, sales and other festivities typically showcasing thousands of dromedaries. The extrav-

aganza seeks to preserve the camel’s role in the kingdom’s Bedouin tradition and heritage, even as the oil-rich country plows ahead with modernizing mega-projects. Camel breeding is a multimillion-dollar industry and similar events take place across the region. We can totally understand the need to compete.

Uber Eats Heads to Space

Tiny Car; Huge Trip

If Alex Orchin’s car looks like it could fit into your kid’s lunchbox, your eyes aren’t deceiving you that much. Orchin’s car is a Peel P50, the world’s smallest production car. The classic car fanatic made waves with it when he drove it the entire length of Great Britain. The three-wheeler was originally built in the 1960s but was rebooted in the past decade in 40 cc single-cylinder gasoline and electric motor versions. Orchin’s is a 2017 gasoline edition that he just barely fits in at 5 feet, 11 inches tall. Its top speed is 23 mph on flat ground. The 874-mile trip from John O’Groats in the north to Land’s End in the south took Orchin three weeks as he putt-putted in his tiny car. Given that the commuter-focused car barely has room for Orchin, let alone his luggage, a friend followed him in a camper van used as a support vehicle. “As far as I know I am the first person to attempt the journey in a P50,” Orchin said. The car performed wonderfully along the road. One mishap? When the door fell off with just 50 miles to go. “Wherever I park it,” Orchin related, “it draws a crowd. People are amazed by this car – and not just car-people. It has a universal appeal with everyone, even kids,” he said.

Wondering what you’re going to eat on your next space mission? Have no fear – Uber Eats will deliver to infinity and beyond. Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa teamed up with the company to make the first Uber Eats delivery to astronauts on the International Space Station. The delivery was made as part of Maezawa’s 12-day orbit. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said, “One small handoff for Yusaku Maezawa, one giant delivery for Uber Eats! We’re over the moon to have helped make our first successful delivery to space. Our goal is to help people go anywhere and get anything, so we’re proud to serve the astronauts at the International Space Station.” Dara added, “Yusaku Maezawa gets a thumbs up on this delivery, even though it took a bit longer than the usual 30 minutes to arrive.” The delivery was made on December 11 around 9:40 a.m. (eastern time), about eight-and-a-half hours after Maezawa’s trip began. What delicacies survived the trip to outer space? The package included boiled mackerel in miso, beef bowl cooked in sweet sauce, simmered chicken with bamboo shoots, and braised pork. “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to handle Uber Eats’ first food delivery to space,” said Yusaku Maezawa. “Uber Eats’ initiative and sense of adventure is inspiring. Almost 30 employees are servicing hundreds of students with Lamdeinu services. LAMDEINU’s impact on TA’s students’ success is extraordinary. But the waiting list for LAMDEINU continues to grow each year. Demand has outgrown supply. More students need services, and more services are needed. The expansion and sustainability of TA’s LAMDEINU is critically important. To address this and continue to grow TA’s Lamdeinu services, TA will be having a special community-wide matching campaign for LAMDEINU on December 29th and 30th. For some students, this campaign will translate into time with a Reading Specialist. Because of donors to the campaign, a struggling student will improve his language comprehension skills and fall in love with reading. For some, this campaign will translate into early-intervention services. Because of donors to the campaign, a teacher will catch a student’s dyslexia and immediately begin closing the achievement gap. For some, this campaign will translate into a Gemara Skills Support group. Because of donors to the campaign, a student will work with a rebbe to increase his fluency in Gemara and build his confidence in learning. Lamdeinu services help TA to reach all students, even those who learn differently. Talmidim don’t need to go elsewhere to access quality interventions when they can get the same services in their very own Yeshiva. This campaign puts into action the belief that every talmid deserves individualized attention. No matter the obstacle, all of TA’s students receive a catered learning plan to their unique strengths and challenges. Chaim, and students like him, need your help. You may know a child like Chaim. Chaim is a 10-year-old who is bright and sensitive. He loves chumash and science experiments. But Chaim is struggling in the classroom. As Menashe is his firstborn and thus deserving of an enhanced blessing due to his primary standing vis-avis his younger brother Efraim, Yosef positions Menashe to his left so that when facing Yaakov, Menashe will be standing to Yaakov’s right, enabling Yaakov to easily place his right hand — the symbolically stronger one, indicative of the more significant blessing — on Menashe’s head. Yaakov famously directs his right hand toward Efraim’s head, situating his left one upon Menashe.

The Torah reports how Yosef when observing this is ‘displeased’ and tries to intervene by physically lifting his father’s hand from Menashe’s head and direct it toward Efraim’s. Yosef verbally corrects his father by telling him it’s not the proper way as the firstborn is deserving of the right hand. Yaakov ‘refuses’, revealing to Yo-

sef how he is quite aware of what he is doing and although the older one will attain greatness, the younger one is destined to become even greater. What was Yaakov thinking? Didn’t he realize Yosef would be bewildered when seeing this odd behavior? Couldn’t all this drama have been avoided if Yaakov would have simply explained in advance his intentions and the logic behind them? The Midrash depicts how when Yosef endeavored to lift his father’s hand, Yaakov exclaimed, “The hand that was able to conquer a third of the world, you are attempting to push away?!” This refers to Yaakov’s having defeated the Saro shel Esav, the heavenly protector of Esav, who is described as occupying a third of the world. What is the meaning of this cosmic ‘arm wrestle’ that transpired between Yosef and Yaakov? Yosef is the antagonist of Esav. Esav epitomizes kinah, jealousy, the seed of enmity and hatred. The selfless Yosef, who was a victim of the jealousy of his brothers, is the antidote BS”D

Yaakov sought to instruct his cherished son Yosef, at the end of his life, regarding the pitfalls of this evil trait and how vulnerable we all are to its lure. Perhaps he sought to provoke precisely those weaknesses within the human character that so often leave us exposed to dangerous attitudes. Yaakov intentionally withheld his plan, to provoke Yosef into an awareness of his own vulnerability. Despite Yosef’s determination to stifle jealousy among his own children, he fell victim to the assumptions that create distance between men. Yosef’s very first reaction was that he was ‘displeased’ or more literally, it was ‘bad in his eyes’. Yosef erroneously believed that Yaakov took him for a fool. Yosef’s initial thought was that Yaakov assumed that he had inconsiderately placed Menashe to his own right, thereby necessitating Yaakov to cross his hand towards him, when in fact he had been sensitive to place Menashe correctly to Yaakov’s right. One of the Tosafists, Rav Yitzchok HaLevi, indeed explains that was precisely Yosef’s thinking. We too, often project our own presumptions without giving the benefit of the doubt to the other party. Yosef is so sure of himself that he instinctively tries to physically redirect Yaakov’s hand. Yaakov’s referencing his exhibition of strength in defeating the angel wasn’t a boastful challenge to Yosef to go try and budge him. He was teaching Yosef that in order to defeat Esav one must be free of the tainted attitudes that are associated with Esav. One who is so confident of his own ‘righteous’ conclusions will end up encroaching on the boundaries of others inappropriately and doubt the ac-

tions of those greater than him. In truth, it extends beyond the realm between man and man to one’s very relationship with G-d and providence. Might that be the deeper message behind Yaakov’s reminder to Yosef that he defeated the forces of Esav who foolishly believe in self-determination, never contemplating possibilities beyond one’s own ken. Yosef ‘gets it’ immediately, and his children quietly and humbly, absorb this profound secret for success in life. If we can master this, our relationships with each other and most certainly with G-d will be inspired by a pursuit of a genuine truth. Yaakov alludes to Efraim’s greater stature due to his descendant Yehoshua, whose humility was legendary and the attribute that contributed to his becoming the paradigm of a selfless and devoted student, never fazed by the unexpected. But Menashe is great as well, since Gideon will stem from him. Gideon was renowned as well, for his always finding the positive in others and for selflessly devoting himself to his father. (‫)רד‬ Despite the switch, these worthy sons of Yosef quietly and happily accepted their lots and were equipped to defeat the forces of Esav that seed frustration and conflict. Might that be the objective of this pithy blessing, that our children should never get frustrated, accepting the roles carved out for them in life by providence, not always by choice? Is there a greater lesson for life than this? May our children be blessed with these qualities and merit a world free of dissent and contention. Chanukah in a Place Called Prison

“Reb Levi Yitzchak Barditchever, the defender of Yidden, explains that the name Menasheh was to signify the tzarah his father Yosef Hatzadik was in, while Efraim refers to the salvation Hashem would ultimately grant Yosef. Explicitly and emphatically placing Efraim before Menasheh shows that salvation predetermines the tzarah. The only reason we go through the tzarah is to set the stage for the salvation that follows. I took strength from this Dvar Torah.» The first year in Otisville, having been there a few months, Rubashkin did not know what to expect. As Chanukah approached, he made his rounds speaking to as many Yidden as possible, inviting and encouraging them to

attend the menorah lighting. Fifteen inmates showed up. It was the largest gathering of Jewish inmates he had seen thus far. Undoubtedly each was contemplating the Al Hanisim prayer for open miracles. Rubashkin relays in his writings, “I sat down and watched the single candle burning in my menorah. Memories of Chanukah at home flooded my mind. I focused on the one flame I had lit at the command of the One G-d, by whose will I found myself in my current situation and with whose will I would shortly reunite with my family. That single candle was the embodiment of the well-known teaching that even the smallest amount of light could dispel much darkness.” In a place called prison, there are no Chanukah parties to run to, no public gatherings, and no streets full of the sights, sounds, and smells of Chanukah. On most days of Chanukah, time spent with the candles, watching their holy light, singing songs, and

telling stories, was the only holiday celebration. However, the final day of Chanukah is not just one more day of the holiday. The particular name this day is given- Zos Chanukah - literally, “This is Chanukah.” At this point, we have reached the penultimate, fully illuminating every potential candle to brighten the dark world all around us. In Otisville, Rubashkin always marked this special day with a seudah-meal, usually with some matzah and a packet of tuna fish. During one of these seudot, Rubashkin was ushered out of his cell and informed of his miraculous release. On that particular day, several guards and officers were leaving their shifts. One man of high rank stopped long enough to say, “Now that you’re on the other side, I want to wish you Mazel Tov and Happy Chanukah!” The Aleph Learning Institute (ALI) of Baltimore brings to the community high academic Torah learning.

vraham Porges is a United Hatzalah volunteer EMT from Ashdod who works as a Kashrut Supervisor for the city of Ashdod. On Tuesday, he was in his office a block away when he received the alert to the emergency. Without hesitation, he put on his helmet and jacket and rushed out the door to his ambucycle, flicked on his lights and sirens, and sped off to the incident. “I had just gotten back to my office after responding to a serious motorcycle accident that took place on Moshe Sneh Boulevard. I barely had time to sit down in my office before I got the alert to the second emergency,” he said. “It was one of those mornings where I went from emergency to emergency. The adrenaline stayed with me from one emergency to another and even after.” When Avraham arrived, he met another United Hatzalah volunteer EMT and fellow ambucyclist, David Bakovza, and the pair of EMTs ran up to the man’s apartment. They found family members performing CPR on the man who was unconscious and pulseless. They quickly attached a defibrillator, took over compressions, and began assisted ventilation on the man in an attempt

to restart his heart and get his pulse back. After a few minutes, they were joined by other first responders including Avraham Bahar and a mobile intensive care ambulance crew. The combined team administered

help give this man another chance at life today,” he concluded. But Avraham’s day wasn’t finished. The experienced EMT is also one of the organization’s trainers who offer basic CPR and family safety courses. On Tuesday evening, he

baby had decided to take the course, with extra emphasis on how to treat a baby, to enable them to know what to do in case of an emergency in the home. I asked how the baby was and it turns out that the following day was the brit milah.” The family inquired from Avraham, a religious Jew, what customs were appropriate during the brit milah ceremony as they weren’t religious and were at a loss of what procedures should be done. Avraham told them about the custom to say Kriat Shema next to the baby the night before the brit, and the family promptly asked him to do so, as they were unfamiliar with the text. “I gladly accepted the honor to say the prayer over the new child. That is how I found myself in a non-religious family’s living room in Ramat Gan, reciting a blessing over a new baby, celebrating a new life with an entire family, after having just saved another life earlier that morning. “It was a day that I will never forget. Sometimes we merit the ability to see just why Hashem put us in a specific place at a specific time. This past Tuesday, that happened to me twice.”

One Israel Fund Hosts Virtual Event and Campaign: “Give A Little Heart” Cedarhurst, New York - December 13, 2021 -One Israel Fund, the premier organization that funds humanitarian and security projectevent and donor campaign from 11:00 AM EST Wednesday, December 22 and to 11:00 PM EST on Thursday, December 23, 2021, with a special online program beginning at 8:00 PM EST on Thursday evening. srael enjoys a strong relationship with the Czech Republic and Slovakia, two countries that comprise the former Czechoslovakia. To understand the root of this special relationship, let’s go back over 130 years and focus on Thomas Masaryk. The name Masaryk may ring a bell, as streets in over half a dozen cities across Israel – including a block in Jerusalem’s German Colony, a kibbutz near Haifa, numerous town squares and even a major forest – have been named in his memory. Thomas Masaryk was a renaissance man: a sociologist, philosopher, politician and statesman. He worked tirelessly to help Czechoslovakia gain its independence after World War I and served as the country’s first president. Masaryk was a strong friend of the Jews. Growing up exposed to many anti-Semitic influences, he freed himself of bigotry through positive encounters with Jews and through his studies of religion, philosophy and sociology. A classic example of Thomas Masaryk’s compassion and courage was his defense in 1899 of Leopold Hilsner, a Jew accused of ritual murder and condemned to death. Standing practically alone in the face of overwhelming public hostility, Masaryk defended Hilsner and railed against the shameful anti-Semitic behavior of the masses. After the 1917 Balfour Declaration gave a major boost to the Zionist movement, and soon after his election as president, Masaryk declared that Czechoslovakia would support a Jewish homeland. Masaryk put his words into action and, in April 1927, was the first head of a democratic state to visit Palestine and meet with members of the Yishuv. Thomas’s son Jan Masaryk had a different worldview than his father, but concerning the Jews and Israel,

he and his father were in full agreement. Starting before World War II, Jan lived primarily in London, first as his country’s envoy and then as the government-in-exile’s minister

For example, in September 1938, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy signed the catastrophic Munich Agreement, permitting German annexation of the Sudetenland in western Czechoslovakia. Adolf Hitler announced it was his last terri-

Jews don´t think in days or months – they think in centuries, in millennia.” Immediately after the war, Czechoslovakia, under Masaryk’s guidance, allowed thousands of Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe to cross its territory on their way to Palestine. In 1947, Czechoslovakia voted in favor of the UN partition resolution recommending the establishment of a Jewish state. In addition, defying a UN embargo, Czechoslovakia provided crucial military support and also trained Israeli pilots, which was critical for Israel’s victory in its War of Independence. Prime Minister David Ben Gurion didn’t mince words in recognizing the significance of Czechoslovakia’s assistance: “They saved our country. I don’t doubt it. The Czech weapons were the most important help that we got. They saved us, and I doubt very much that we would have survived the first month without them.” Jan Masaryk eagerly anticipated the establishment of the State of Israel. Unfortunately, he died two weeks after the Communist Party came into power, a mere two months before Israel declared its independence. The Communist government reported that he had committed suicide, but forensic experts later determined that the cause of death was murder – which, unfortunately, made perfect sense, as Jan Masaryk would not kowtow to the Communist Party, whose interests were anathema to his values and beliefs.

The Simcha of a Siyum

he Mishna at the end of Taanis (26b) quotes Rabban Shimon Ben Gamliel who declares that the most joyous holidays on the Jewish calendar are Yom Kippur and Tu B’Av. The Gemara states that Yom Kippur was joyous because the nation was forgiven for its sins. However, the Gemara wonders what was so special about Tu B’Av. A variety of reasons are offered by various Amoraim. The Rashbam (Bava Basra 121a) says that the Amoraim are not arguing with each other. Rather, each one is simply declaring the reason that he heard from his Rebbe. Rabba and Rav Yosef (Taanis 31a) explain that on Tu B’Av they stopped cutting wood for the altar. From Tu B’Av and onward, the summer heat is less intense. Hence, any wood gathered from then on would be more moist and not optimal for burning. Furthermore, moist wood may become wormy. Wormy wood may not be placed on the mizbeach. It is similar to offering a blemished sacrifice. Some suggest burning

wormy wood on the altar is akin to offering a non-kosher creature as a sacrifice. It is not immediately clear what Rabba and Rav Yosef’s intent was. Why is the fact that they could no longer cut wood a reason for celebration? Just the opposite! There is a mitzvah that they are no longer able to perform. They should be sad! Rabbeinu Gershom explains that those that were previously occupied in the mitzvah of gathering wood are now able to learn Torah. Embarking on an intense period of Torah study is cause for celebration. In fact, the Gemara continues that the nights start becoming longer from Tu B’Av and on. In an agricultural society, most work was limited to the daytime. Once the nights start becoming longer, everyone is expected to learn more Torah at night. The Shulchan Aruch rules that a rebbe should learn with his talmidim during the day but also learn some at night. The Vilna Gaon says that his source is from this very Gemara. Children should not be trained

that the mitzvah of learning Torah is a daytime pursuit. Just the opposite – when they enter the workforce, perhaps their only free time to learn may be at night. Incidentally, my Rosh HaYeshiva, Rav Henoch Leibowitz, zt”l, remarked that as a youngster in Europe he used go the local shul to learn Torah at night. However, there were generally no seats available. Everyone from the town came to learn Torah at night. He was forced to sit on the leg supports of his father’s shtender! Rabbeinu Gershom’s position is that the cause for a celebration was the beginning a new mitzvah. The Rashbam disagrees. He says the celebration was because they just completed a mitzvah. For many months, they were gathering wood for the altar, from Nissan until Tu B’Av. To finally bring this great mitzvah to its conclusion is cause for celebration. Our Sages teach us that the credit for a mitzvah goes to the one who completes it. Although all the participants in a mitzvah get reward, there is something unique about

being the one who completes the mitzvah. Similarly here, although gathering wood was a mitzvah that lasted for months, bringing it to its completion is cause for celebration. In fact, this idea is codified by the Misha Berura in midst of a discussion about Simchas Torah (669:6). He writes that indeed completing a mitzvah is cause for celebration, although he does not specifically state what mitzvos he is referring to. The most famous application of this Gemara was stated by the Nimukei Yosef. He writes that this passage is the source that one should make a seudah when he completes learning a masechta, The Rema states in Yoeh Deah (246:26) that it is a mitzvah to rejoice and make a seudah upon completion of a masechta. In fact, the poskim write that one can likewise make a siyum on the completion of Tanach. Rav Vozner, zt”l, writes that if one studied a sefer of Navi and completed it on Erev Pesach, he can make a siyum and that will exempt the firstborns from the need to fast. Rav

Moshe Feinstein, zt”l, famously told a student to make a siyum on a daf Gemara! A student used to study Gemara with his father every time he went home for Shabbos. After some time, they finished a daf of Gemara. Rav Moshe instructed the talmid to make a siyum and informed him that he would personally attend! The Maharshal was so convinced that a party upon completion of sefer is a seudas mitzvah that he ruled that during benching at a siyum one should recite, “Blessed is our G-d shehasmicha b’mono.” This phrase “[Hashem] Whose abode is this celebration” is recited at betnching at a sheva brachos or a wedding. The Maharshal reasoned that certainly the phrase should be recited at a siyum which certainly brings “joy” to Hashem. However, at the first siyum when the Maharshal was ready to put his new ruling into practice something terrible happened. The Maharshal does not go into detail about what exactly oc-

curred but needless to say it was not pleasant. The Maharshal attributed the occurrence to a punishment for inventing a new halacha which had no source in the writings of the earlier poskim. Already in Masechta Shabbos (118), Abaye states that he

However, by a siyum on Torah, there is always more Torah to learn, and no one would misunderstand the nature of his celebration. He certainly can’t be celebrating that he is done and finished with a mitzvah. Rather, he is celebrating the accomplishment that he finished one segment of Torah. Therefore, even Rabbeinu Gershom would agree that making a simcha upon the completion of a sefer is meritorious.

Valuing Privacy By Sara Rayvych, MSEd

here are so many articles to be written on the topic of privacy. Respecting the privacy of others is a strong Torah value. It’s also in serious decline in today’s society. For example, social media has made publicizing our private lives into an art. While the Torah praises “ohelecha Yaakov” and our innate right to familial privacy, social media made peeking into other family’s homes the new standard. I think I was in fifth grade when I received a surprisingly mature response from my classmate. He (I was in a coed school) must have asked me about something but then immediately said something similar to “but you don’t need to tell me if you don’t want to.” I recall being absolutely shocked but truly appreciative that I didn’t need to divulge my problems. While he was mature for his age, knowing his parents, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were responsible for his respect of the privacy of others. This hands-on lesson has stuck with me, and I’ve been grateful for it ever since. Every coin has a second side. Before Pesach, our family had COVID. While we tried to avoid the virus, it still got in and I ended up being hospitalized. As our local Hatzalah members loaded me into the ambulance that Friday evening, I noticed a group of frum teenage boys walking in the street close to the ambulance. I will admit I was a bit uncomfortable being seen in that state but even more uncomfortable that it didn’t seem to bother them. Not only did they not seem upset that someone was sick enough to be transported in an ambulance on Shabbos, but they didn’t even feel the sensitivity to look away or walk at a slight distance. This is similar to the common phenomenon that when Hatzalah or other emergency workers show up, people come to stare and watch. Curiosity is normal, but it needs to be balanced. From a practical angle, bystanders can get in the way of

emergency workers as they do their job. From the perspective of being sensitive to others, not everyone wants their personal business, especially when things are at their worst, to be in full view of everyone. Thank you to all our Hatzoloh and Shomrim members and their families for their avodas hakodesh and, specifically, those who came to help us when we needed help. There are two aspects of privacy I’d like to focus on now: respecting the private lives of others and maintaining privacy in our own family’s lives.

Teaching Respect for Privacy Respecting the privacy of others is a part of good middos and no less a part of chinuch than Gemara and speaking truthfully. It, too, should be actively taught. Children need to learn to respect the privacy of their parents and grandparents, siblings, neighbors, and friends. They also benefit when they learn to respect their own privacy. Private matters include medical information, finances, relationships, personal matters of any kind, and nearly anything behind closed doors. If someone doesn’t want to share, then their feelings should be respect-

ed and we don’t pry. If someone puts something in their bag or any closed space, it’s unlikely they want others to see. It’s best to give children concrete examples and demonstrate actual cases, when possible. Role playing is another great strategy. It isn’t enough to say “respect other people’s privacy,” as that’s often too vague for youngsters to understand. It’s important to point out that children are naturally curious and want to know what’s going on – this is completely normal. Children learn from their curiosity, and this is part of growing up. As they mature, they can begin to recognize that just because they’re interested in knowing something doesn’t mean they are privileged to that information.

Social Media I will confess that I don’t have most social media, so I am limited in my experience. There is so much to say about the role of social media in our lives, but privacy alone is a big enough topic. We’ll have to leave the other issues for another time. Social media is a previously unknown way to show the world our private lives. Everything from status updates to photos tell everyone where we’ve been, what we’ve bought, and even what we’re eating. The flip

side is that we’re seeing everyone else’s private lives – even what they enjoyed for breakfast. We get a very skewed version of reality from social media that is unhealthy for any of us, certainly for still-developing minds. (Please note that in this section I am not in any way encouraging routine social media use for children; I’m simply acknowledging the reality that many of our youth are already exposed.) It’s important to remember that what we see is what others choose to show us; this always applied, even before social media. When people share parts of their lives with you, they share what they choose, and this easily leads people to get a distorted view of others and their personal lives. For example, you may see what your neighbor buys, wears, and drives but you don’t see their actual bank accounts. You may deduce they have a certain wealth based on their late model sports car but that can be very misleading. It’s easy to see how another couple acts in public and make assumptions about the strength of their relationship. This, too, can be deceiving as couples may adjust their behavior to give a certain positive impression. It’s human nature to get jealous of what we see but it’s crucial to remember that what you see isn’t always what truly exists. This problem is only exacerbated by social media where people very carefully choose what they display. Teaching children to understand this reality is part of their chinuch, as well. Explain to your children how to interpret what they see in person and on social media, if they use it. Allow them to understand that not all that glitters is gold. Simultaneously, encourage your children to think carefully before they put anything on social media or show off something in school. Not only is there a bracha in keeping things hidden but there are serious safety concerns when children give out too much information.

Kids need to learn that other people’s business is theirs alone, and we don’t read text messages, emails, or any other form of correspondence that isn’t addressed to us.

Rather than building unpleasant walls between us, privacy is a barrier that generates respect for ourselves and for those around us. As a nation that thrives on kedusha and separateness, we can readily pass this teaching onto the next generation. May our homes merit to fulfill the tremendous bracha of being “mah tovu” as “ohalecha Yaakov.”

Natural Diuretics

diuretic pulls water out of the body and is used as treatment for certain medical conditions such as renal insufficiency, congestive heart failure, edema, and hypertension. When the body has an imbalance of fluids, too much water can be detrimental, and thus it must be pulled out of the body. Extra fluid in the body makes it hard for the heart to work properly and can make breathing difficult. A diuretic will help release the excess fluid from the body through urination, hopefully balancing the fluid shift. A physician will prescribe a diuretic most often in a capsule form, or commonly referred to as a water pill. Yet, in extreme cases, the diuretic will be intravenous. Common names for diuretics are Lasix, Bumetanide, Bumex, Hydralazine, Hydrochlorothiazide, Aldactone, and Spironolactone. However, for those not suffering from an above-mentioned condition and who simply feel bloated, a diuretic can help you, too. I wouldn’t suggest a prescribed diuretic, although a natural diuretic can be helpful. Many are aware of the phenomenon that salt retains water. Thus, when eating a high sodium meal, other than feeling thirsty, you may feel extremely bloated and full of water. To reduce the bloating, a natural diuretic can do the trick. Below is a list of nat-

ural diuretics. • Fruits and vegetables: Aside from offering loads of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, most fruits and vegetables are water-based, which provide hydration as well. Believe it or not, they can also be a natural diuretic. Lemons, celery, garlic, onions, bell peppers, watermelon, cucumbers,

rate herbs into your meal, rather than taking herbs in a pill or liquid concentrated form. Herbal tea is another great option. • Caffeine: As you may know, caffeine is a natural diuretic as well. Caffeine is found in highest concentrations in coffee and tea. Black and green teas are the best diuretic drinks.

However, sprinkling parsley in a salad, rice, sauce, soup, or adding it to a juice or smoothie is a great way to be safe and get the diuretic effects. The best way is to incorpo-

Exercise is one of the easier natural diuretics for your body since increasing your heart rate will help circulate the excess fluid in the body. Moving the fluid around will help the body get rid of all that excess fluid. • Weight loss: Another magical answer to everything! Since your body is made up of 60% water, weight loss is a great way to release the excess fluid.

• Reducing salt intake: As mentioned above, salt retains fluid, thus by consuming less salt, you will be retaining less fluid. Stay away from high-sodium foods such as pickles, lox, cold cuts, processed foods, and sodas. Believe it or not, all processed foods and sodas have lots of sodium; the sweet taste masks the salt. Of the above-mentioned natural diuretics, all are safe and healthy ways to release excess water from the body. No diuretic pills or other forms should be taken without a prescription from a healthcare provider. Diuretics should not be used to achieve weight loss!! If you notice fluid buildup on a consistent basis from bloating or edema, contact a medical professional. If it is circumstantial bloating, like after a big meal, a menstrual cycle, or swollen feet from pregnancy, a natural diuretic as listed above should do the trick and release the excess water from your body, leaving you more comfortable and happier. Stocks, Twitter Polls, and Market Games

n Saturday November 6th, 2021, Tesla CEO Elon Musk released a Twitter poll asking if he should sell 10% of his Tesla holdings. Out of 3.5 million responses, 58% of them supported selling the shares. Since then, Musk has sold over $10 billion worth of stock, but still has more than 50% to go in order to reach 10%. More information has come to light since the now-famous tweet regarding Musk’s expiring stock option compensation package. The world of executive equity compensation is complex. Let’s explore the importance of appreciating context when navigating stock market investing, which will be clarified below.

An important skill for any investor is the ability to realize that while we all might be in the same stock market, we are not all playing the same game. The game of a long-term investor dollar cost averaging their way into a ROTH IRA is probably different from a RobinHood day trader. Talking heads on TV driven by ad revenue and commission based financial “advisors” will not necessarily be offering advice that is appropriate for a retiree or pension fund manager. It’s not that one is right or wrong, it’s just important to realize that we aren’t all playing the same game, even if we are all in the same playground. The cool thing about your time horizon, your risk tolerance, and your goals? They are yours! Let’s dive a bit deeper into the stock option package of Elon Musk and perhaps shed some light on how his “game” might not be our “game” and why it’s important to be aware of that. By any measurement, the dollar figures in the Elon Musk stock option story are significant, but what exactly is a stock option? Why is it part of the CEO’s compensation, and how can a tax liability on exercised stock options create such volatility in a company’s share

price? As a way to incentivize executives to stick around and increase the value of the company they work for, many organizations will create compensation structures that include both a cash salary and equity compensation, sometimes in the form of non-qualified stock options (NSO). NSOs are issued to employees that allow them to purchase shares of their company at a certain price (strike price) at a certain point in time. The strike price is the company’s share price at the time of issuance, and there will be some sort of vesting schedule or hurdle requirement that must be met before the employee can exercise their options. In order to exercise a stock option, the employee simply pays the strike price to the company and receives shares in return. Stock options have expiration dates, meaning that if the employee does not exercise them by a certain date, the option expires and the employee misses out on being able to purchase shares. When the share price increases from the strike price, the options are “in the money” and would be a good deal to exercise. If the share price is lower than the strike price, then the options

bill? Equity compensation is nothing new to public companies and the Tesla story is interesting. Fundamentally, a CEO exercising options is both nothing new and the details and timing of stock option plans is readily available

This form of compensation creates an incentive for a company’s senior executives to both stick around (due to the vesting schedule) and work hard to increase the value of the company (so options will be “in the money”, prompting employees to exercise). Here is where it gets tricky…in the eyes of the IRS, when an employee exercises “in the money” options, there is taxable income generated on the difference between the strike price and the actual value of the shares exercised. The employee then has a basis in the shares equal to the current value and will only pay capital gains taxes on future sales to the extent of further price appreciation. Therefore, people

exercising options need to pay taxes on that spread when they exercise. In the case of Elon Musk, that tax bill is estimated to be around $15 billion! Musk actually does not take a cash salary from Tesla, but the taxes he will owe are certainly a current liability. What makes the tax bill so high? It is due to the astronomical increase in the price of Tesla shares coupled with the fact that Musk delayed exercises of already vested and “in the money” options until now. In order to cover this very real tax liability, it is common to see employees sell back shares of their own company to cover the taxes. Many companies offer “cashless exercises” which is a way to exercise stock options without incurring a liquidity crunch on the exercise and associated taxes. In either case, shares get sold back at the time of exercise. Musk would face a smaller tax bill if the price of Tesla fell at the time of exercise, since the spread between strike price and value would have been lower. Additionally, there would have been more value that will be taxed at lower long term capital gains rates upon subsequent price increases. Much speculation exists about why Musk posted his tweet and the timing for when he posted it. Investors and speculators alike have shared narratives on what this means for Tesla’s stock. Is Elon cashing out because he senses a correction is coming? Is the option exercise yet another proof of Musk’s commitment to growing Tesla? Is he simply trying to lower his tax

with. I’m a 28-year-old “older” single who’s been in shidduchim for a while now... I took the Covid vaccine and booster shots, trying to be responsible. Now I am encountering many

shadchanim who are telling me that a lot of guys are looking for un-Covid-vaccinated girls because of what some say is a “fertility risk.” This is not to debate the vaccine -- I know everyone has their opinions on it. I’m just wondering, can I feign that I did not have the vaccine in order to get more dates? I know it sounds dishonest, but at this point, I’m desperate. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you!

Compatibility is the first thing people look for when they date. As a relationship deepens, other shared values come into play. Trust is the basis on which a relationship grows. Serious issues develop in a marriage when one of the partners finds out that the other has withheld important information such as medical and psychiatric conditions. These trust issues are very difficult to undue and often require specialized therapy by an expert. Vaccination status comes under the category of medical information. Vague, generalized statements by shadchanim are not to be given serious merit. Responsible young men abound. Why should you open yourself up to date people who are not responsible about what science has taught us in this Covid era? Hashem runs the world, but we must do our hishtadlus. Vaccination is the hishtadlus people must take to safeguard themselves and the people around them during these precarious times. Hashem gave us contemporary science which may be imperfect, but it’s the best tool we have to combat disease.

The same Hashem who created a bat and scientists in Wuhan crafting a one-of-a-kind virus has created your other half. Your bashert is out there, in this world, breathing the same air as you, somewhere. Once you recognize this fact, and continue looking for him despite outside “noise,” you’ll find him. Shadchanim are telling you that boys prefer non-Covid-vaccinated girls? So dodge them and take other routes to find your bashert. Go to singles events, volunteer at organizations that have a mixed crowd, or merely tell shadchanim that your personal health information is HIPAA protected. When we ditch the narrative that people are in control and adopt Hashem as our Shadchan, the most miraculous things happen. Do your hishtadlus, trust in Hashem, and don’t divulge more information than you have to. IyH you will see yeshuos in your life.

s a fellow single 28 y/o, I can completely relate to the challenges of being single contradicting the typical Jewish community standards. I’m going to share a life-changing belief that will affect you in every aspect of your day. I always hated the concept of the word “crisis.” Crisis indicates that something is out of control, resting in chaos. There is no shidduch crisis because G-d is in control. Every single aspect of our lives is being taken care of by G-d. However, suddenly when it comes to dating, people tend to assume that shadchanim have control, and therefore, we need to accommodate their beliefs about our self-image and lifestyle. That is a complete

illusion connected to the concept of galus – that everything is hidden, and there is a lack of clarity. If you recognize that the same G-d you rely on to get you out of traffic, increase your parnassa, and help you succeed with a goal, is the same G-d you rely on for dating, then you relinquish the illusion that your life is determined by shadchanim. Hashem has, and always will be in control of when, who, and how you meet your bashert. Shadchanim never were in control. It’s simply a matter of whether Hashem gives them the zechus to set you up or not. Relinquishing the expectation that shadchanim are in control liberates you from stress and strengthens your emunah with Hashem.

There is no shidduch crisis because G-d is in control.

Oh, and one more thing, getting the vaccine actually helps bring you closer to your bashert because it will attract a man that supports your decision and lifestyle. You don’t want “more dates” but rather “just one more” with your bashert. In my opinion, the more authentically you live your life, the closer you get towards meeting your bashert.

That’s a terrible way to begin a lifelong relationship. And, what’s going to happen when the truth comes out? How could lying be the foundation of any solid relationship? Further, as a result of lying and claiming that you weren’t vaccinated, the more normal young men, with more mainstream opinions about vaccination, won’t want to go out with you. Second, the goal is not to “get more dates.” The goal is to find the ONE with whom you can spend the rest of your life: the one who trusts you and whom you can trust. If he’s not going to date you because you had the Covid-19 vaccine, then it’s time to take a “booster” in emunah and believe that he’s not the right one for you.

The more authentically you live your life, the closer you get towards meeting your bashert.

Third, it’s sad that this question comes, out of desperation, from a young lady who sounds like a wonderful person, who would make a wonderful wife and mother. This is a strong indictment against our current shidduch system. May I suggest that, instead of relying exclusively on shadchanim, you should consider attending singles’ weekends and other events sponsored by reputable organizations like YUConnects. Good luck!

Three Types of Empathy By Rabbi Azriel Hauptman Empathy refers to our ability to understand someone else’s plight as if we were in their shoes. It is very different from sympathy, which is merely feeling sorrow for someone else’s misfortune. Empathy can be an incredible catalyst for acts of kindness, but it can sometimes backfire. This duality of empathy can be best understood via the lens of the different types of empathy. Researchers commonly divide empathy into three categories: cognitive empathy, emotional empathy, and compassionate empathy. Cognitive empathy is simply understanding what someone else is experiencing without any emotional reaction. Here the focus is on perspective. When you can view an experience through the perspective of another person, you are having cognitive empathy. For example, if you were marketing a product, this kind of empathy would be very helpful. If you can anticipate the needs and wants of

potential consumers, you can design a very successful product. Emotional empathy is when you are experiencing someone else’s emotions as if they were your own. Emotions are contagious and anyone can “catch” emotions that they are exposed to. This is first experienced by infants, who will smile when we smile at them and will cry when we are sad. Emotional empathy stays with us for our entire lives and is partially what makes us human. This form of empathy is certainly experienced by those in caring professions. The ability to understand and feel what someone else in undergoing, adds an entirely new dimension to the work. Those who are being helped feel understood, and the helper is motivated to step up to the plate and do whatever they can to help. However, this type of empathy, when unchecked, can be traumatic for the caregiver. The emotions can become too much to bear and can lead to

symptoms of PTSD such as constant tiredness, insomnia, hopelessness, irritability, and intrusive thoughts. Compassionate empathy is a third category of empathy that represents a balanced and healthier approach. In this type of empathy, your feelings and emotions are channeled into helping others. To the degree that you cannot help, you do not allow yourself to become enmeshed in emotions that can affect your personal life. This balanced approach is the best of both worlds. The people you are helping will feel understood as they can sense your empathy. Those very same emotions motivate you to action since you understand and feel what they are going through. For those who are working in the caring professions, this form of empathy is the only one that can survive the test of time. If they become overburdened with the emotions of all of the trauma that they see day in and day out, they will not be able to bear the emotional toll. Then,

their goal of helping people will be undermined. We all experience a spectrum of emotions every day of our lives. Some of these emotions are necessary and should be embraced. Other emotions have the potential to wear us down and be counterproductive. We do not want to shut down our emotions and lose that sense of our humanity. On the other hand, we do not want to risk our mental health in the process. As with almost everything else in life, the goal is to reach the proper balance. Then we can be empathic, helpful, and healthy. This is a service of Relief Resources. Relief is an organization that provides mental health referrals, education, and support to the frum community. The Most Decorated Marine By Avi Heiligman

he average rank and file soldier, sailor, airman or marine rarely gets any recognition unless he or she does something extraordinary in battle. The entire career of Marine Corps legend Chesty Puller was extraordinary and anything but average. He is famous for partaking in three wars and was involved in some of the most intense battles in Marine Corps history. He didn’t just fight the enemy – he led his units with a vigor that usually resulted in victory. Puller started as an enlisted marine and ended his career as a lieutenant general, earning many awards and recognitions along the way. He is also remembered for some memorable quotes that inspired the marines around him to victory. Lewis Burwell Puller was born in West Point, Virginia, and grew up with tales from the Civil War and colorful Confederate General Stonewall Jackson. After spending time at the Virginia Military Academy for about a year, Puller left because he wanted “to go where the guns are.” The year was 1918 – the final year of World War I – although Puller never saw action during that war. He attended non-commissioned officer school in 1919 and then officer school, graduating as a second lieutenant. However, since the marines reduced their numbers, Puller’s rank was reduced to corporal although he was soon promoted. Chest saw action in many battles while fighting a wide range of enemies that included guerillas (irregular warfare combatants), Japanese, and communists. During the Banana Wars (a series of conflicts involving the United States in Central America that lasted from 1898 to 1934), Puller saw action in Haiti and Nicaragua. Puller was the commander of the 1st, Battalion, 7 th Marine Regi-

ment during World War II and fought against the Japanese on Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Peleliu. As the commander of the 1st Marine Regiment during the Korean War, he led his men in the landing at Inchon, the Second Battle of Seoul, and at the Chosin Reservoir. The first action that Puller saw was in Haiti, and it was to deliver supplies to two small towns. His small force of American-trained local fighters was able to defeat an ambush of enemy fighters that was four times the size of his unit. The going was sluggish due to the pack animals that they were responsible for, but Puller

In the years following his Central American deployment, Puller was sent to China to command the marine detachment in Beijing. The first time was in Nicaragua in 1930 when he led units from the Nicaraguan National Guard in battle against larger groups of bandits. Puller disregarded his own safety and skillfully led his units in a rout of the enemy. As was usual with Puller, he always led by example and was on the front lines with his men. Two years later, he was still in the country and earned his second Navy Cross while on patrol in the mountains. Again, they were outnumbered,

was given command of the 1st Battalion, 7 th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Japanese forces were invading and capturing Allied bases with ease during the first six months of the Pacific war. The marines were called in to turn the tide during the American invasion of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Now a lieutenant colonel, Puller was on the front lines with his battalion along the Matanikau River when they were cut off by a larger Japanese force. He called in naval fire support while a group of landing craft rescued the trapped marines. Puller received the Bronze Star for his actions during the battle. He also

earned his third Navy Cross of his career at the Battle of Henderson Field. The marines under his command successfully defended the airfield from a regiment-sized Japanese attack. Throughout the night, the Japanese sent waves of soldiers in coordinated attacks (not Banzai charges) that were met with stiff American resistance led by Puller. Later in the Pacific theater, Puller was awarded his fourth Navy Cross for action during the Battle of Gloucester. The commanders of other marine battalions had been wounded, and the unit was under heavy attack. Puller took control of the situation and reorganized the battalions for a successful attack against the Japanese. He exposed himself to heavy enemy fire from fortified Japanese positions and commanded the attack from the front. On Peleliu, Puller led the 1st Marine Regiment in a drawnout, bloody battle on the coral island. The most decorated marine in American history was also present during the Korean War. Puller earned the Silver Star for commanding the 1st Marine Regiment during the invasion of Inchon in September 1950. A couple of months later, he was awarded his fifth Navy Cross for actions at Koto-ri, Korea. The origins of the nickname Chesty are unclear but some say it came from when stuck his chest out while shouting commands. One marine said that they didn’t need sophisticated communications when it came to Puller, “Chesty yells commands up and down the line. You can hear him for miles.”

and had minimal ingredients in my house. I had asked my daughter to pick up a chuck roast (the kind that

has the netting) while I was away, and I figured that upon my return I would whip up a something with it.

On Friday morning, I looked in my pantry and I found a bottle of beer, some spices, and some potatoes and onions. Within minutes, I had my house smelling divine from the roast that I was braising. The roast was a huge hit on Shabbos, and on Sunday night, we

licked the pot clean with the leftovers � which tasted even better because the flavors became concentrated in the fridge.

Ingredients ◦ 3 pound California roast (chuck roast) or second cut brisket ◦ Your favorite spice rub ◦ Kosher salt ◦ 2 onions, sliced into half-moon rings ◦ 8 potatoes, chunked ◦ 1 bottle of beer

Preparation

1. Rub the roast generously with your favorite spice

mix. (I used Simply Gourmet Smoky Coﬀee Rub and then seasoned with kosher salt.)

2. Heat a Dutch oven or heavy bottom pan with canola oil on medium high heat, and sauté the onions until translucent. 3. Push the onions to the side and sear the meat on all

sides. Don’t skip the searing. It adds tons of ﬂavor to the dish. Watch the onions for burning.

4. Once the meat is browned, move the onions around

the meat and pour in the beer. 5. When the beer has come to a boil, cover the meat and lower the ﬂame. Cook on low for 4 hours.

6. Add in the potatoes and cook for another two hours, until potatoes are soft.

I kept the meat on the stove until candle lighting. Shut the ﬂame and cover it with a towel to keep it warm. Alternately, you could put it on a blech. Cook’s note: If you don’t want to cook it on the stovetop, you can place it covered in the oven at 325°F for 3-4 hours.

he men and women who write our nation’s tax laws aren’t known for their sartorial style. Ohio Representative James Traficant, who served 17 years in the people’s House before serving seven years in the “big” house, raised eyebrows with an occasional denim suit. (We’re pretty sure a Canadian tuxedo would get him fined today.) And Texas Representative Charlie Wilson rocked a unique collection of custom shirts featuring epaulets to hold his suspenders and button flap pockets. But most of the men, at least, are content to settle for a gray suit, blue shirt, and red tie straight off the nearest Brooks Brothers rack. That all changed for a hot minute this fall. New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a leader of her party’s progressive wing, has called for raising top tax rates to 70%. On September 13, she showed up at the Met Gala wearing a white off-the-shoulder gown by Aurora James emblazoned with the words “Tax the Rich” in bold red satin on the backside. AOC, as she’s universally known, is used to flattering appearances in Mother Jones and Rolling Stone. Now you’ll find her in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, too. Many of AOC’s critics have called

her a hypocrite for showing up at a $35,000-per-plate dinner calling for higher taxes. They seem to think her fellow attendees would be offended at her call to pay more. That attack seems misplaced – if you wanted to start a 12-step program for limousine liberals, you probably couldn’t find a

stop her from claiming $41,666 in federal Paycheck Protection Program aid. PPP money was supposed to go primarily towards retaining workers and maintaining payroll, which makes you wonder if she sent Uncle Sam the withholdings on any of those wages, either.

But there’s another tax story here, too: it turns out that designer James, who also dresses famous singers and royals like Megan Markle, doesn’t like paying her own taxes. Maybe she just doesn’t consider herself rich? In 2011, James formed an LLC to manage her business. From April 2018 to April 2019, the IRS has placed $103,220 in liens on the company for failing to pay withholding taxes on her employees’ paychecks. That didn’t

The State of New York has piled on, too. The Department of Taxation and Finance has hit the company with 15 warrants for failing to pay state withholding taxes. They’re still waiting for $14,798. And the state Workers’ Compensation Board has fined James $17,000 for not carrying coverage between March 2017 and February 2018. She owes another $62,722 on the account itself. The good news is, everything’s cool on the tax front with the $1.6

million house that James bought last year in California. Oh wait, it’s not. It turns out she’s already $2,504 behind in property tax on the Tudor-style house in the Hollywood Hills. James doesn’t seem to like paying her rent, either. In 2018, her former landlord sued her for over $5,000 in unpaid rent at her shop on West 38th Street in Manhattan’s Garment District. Her next landlord filed to collect $25,000 in holdover rent and evict her from a location in trendy Brooklyn. Here’s one thing that’s true no matter what you think about AOC’s politics. Those couture gowns the guests wear to the Met Gala can cost tens of thousands of dollars, and you can’t afford them if you’re wasting money on taxes you don’t have to pay! The good news is, all you have to do is accept our invitation to plan better, and you’ll have a better shot at wowing the paparazzi lining the red carpet.
