Dear readers,

About a year ago I bumped into some old friends from South Africa who told me that yet again a popular kosher caterer in the community who had been doing business for many years was found selling non-kosher chicken… The obvious reaction we all have is: What?! How can a regular community member do such a thing? In the late 1940s, the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe wrote my grandfather a letter wishing him success in his meat business in Paris which included a strongly-worded caution. He reminded my grandfather that we have a tradition that even the most stringent individual and yerei shamayim still needs a mashgiach temidi in the store so that he can withstand the huge temptation to use the always available and cheaper non-kosher products. The test is inevitable. Think about it. My grandfather had a beard, davened three times a day and kept kosher very stringently. Yet was told that he must have a constant supervisor in his new store. The truth is, having been brought up in a family heavily involved in the meat business, we were never allowed to eat in a restaurant if my father didn’t trust the owner personally. It could possess the best hashgachah, but if he didn’t think the owner cared enough about kashrus and would be ready to incur serious losses at times, we couldn’t eat there. (He pointed out plenty of times that certain restaurants claiming to have a specific cut from this or that company couldn’t possibly be telling the truth…) Bottom line? Each of us has to think seriously about the decisions we make and not just go along with what everyone is doing. Binafsheinu hu. Wishing you an inspiring Shabbos, Shalom

Lawmakers Vote On Bill To Create Johns Hopkins Police Force

rowds are packing hearing rooms Friday in Annapolis for legislation allowing Johns Hopkins to establish a campus police force. The legislation has more support than it did last year. It has been tweaked following months of meetings with community groups. Oversight includes a University Police Accountability Board and the Baltimore City Civilian Review Board. Bill opponents see the creation of a campus police force at JHU as just another blue wall. Community mistrust of both police and Hopkins came across loud and clear from students. “This is a clear absurdity. Hopkins wishes to hold the leash to its own watchdog,” said Jackson Gilman-Fronlini, an executive committee member of the Abell Improvement As-

sociation. “JHU, you got to do better, you are at the forefront of public health. You are seen as giants in the field, but on the contrary, your thoughts and actions show very little consideration in care for the community that you are meant to serve,” said student Chisom Okereke. Hopkins wants 100 sworn officers at its campuses and hospital phased in over five years. It would enter into a memorandum of understanding with city police. The Hopkins force would primarily handle theft and burglary calls. City police would investigate violent crimes and handle the collection of evidence. Critics say the bill is short on oversight. “As long as we can come to the conclusion that these employees are public employees, that the Baltimore City Council has the final say,” said Sen. Mary Washington, D-Baltimore. The Midtown Benefits Communi-

ty, representing the area around Hopkins, says the bill is necessary to fight rising crime. “We need all the help we can get. We been trying to be cooperative, but in reality, we are in a real state of emergency in our city,” said Adrian Harpool of the Midtown Benefits Community. At another hearing, Johns Hopkins

University President Ron Daniels led bill supporters. “The most rigorous, accountable, transparent and progressive statutory scene for any police department in the state of Maryland,” said Daniels. The legislation also provides millions of dollars in funding for youth programs.

Legislative update by Delegate Dalya Attar

D

ear Baltimore Community, This week marks the middle of my first 90-day legislative session in the Maryland General Assembly’s 439th session. I want to begin by taking a moment to thank you for giving me this opportunity to represent you in Annapolis. I’d also like to take this opportunity to send an update from Annapolis! This 439th session began on January 9, 2019, with my colleagues and I being sworn in, inside the House of Delegates’ chambers which dates back to 1772. Since January 9th, there have been many different issues considered in the General Assembly and it has been an extremely busy session, with over 1300 bills filed thus far. I have spent many long days in hearings and meetings on a wide range of topics that affect my constituents and residents of the entire State of Maryland. There are a wide variety of state criminal laws that have been considered ranging from classifying

those who traffic minors as felons, to strengthening our hate crime laws. Many people do not realize that currently in the State of Maryland if a person sells narcotics illegally, that person faces a felony, while if a person sells a minor, someone’s child, in Maryland, that person faces a lesser classification of misdemeanor. I therefore co-sponsored House Bill 481, which strengthens this criminal law and reclassifies the sale of a minor as a felony. We have also recently experienced an increase in hate crimes, from racist to anti-Semitic acts. Many of us recall the bomb threats directed at Jewish Schools this year. I have therefore co-sponsored House Bill 240, Hate Crimes – Threats and Penalties, which will change the existing Hate Crimes legislation to include the attempt or the threat of committing a hate crime. Another topic that has been considered is our water bills. As many of us experience, our water bills in Baltimore City are out of control and cause

I’m looking for good people to join my team.

extreme hardship for many constituents throughout my district. Those of us who live near the county line watch our neighbors across the street pay hundreds less a month for water, while those living in the city receive outrageous water bills. I believe that allowing our homes and places of worship to be taken away from us because of an inability to pay such outrageous water bills is unacceptable. I therefore co-sponsored House Bill 161, the Water Taxpayer Protection Act of 2019, which will ensure our homes and places of worship are not being sold by the City to enforce a lien for unpaid water bills. I believe this is the first step leading us in the right direction of solving the current water bill crisis that many families in our city are facing. An additional concern for the Baltimore community is the future of the Preakness and Pimlico. In 1984, the Baltimore Colts left for Indianapolis in the middle of the night. Many believe we never fully recovered from this loss. In 2019, the Preakness is trying to leave Pimlico. But this time we have fair warning and won’t let it happen without a fight. Once a year, the Preakness Stakes takes place in Park Heights and is an annual reminder to the rest of the country that so much more than crime happens here. The revitalization of Park Heights is my priority; I will not leave a boarded up, dilapidated structure and a vacant lot in our backyard without a fight. I will not let revenue run out of Maryland and into Washington DC without a fight. I therefore co-sponsored House Bill 1190: Maryland Stadium Authority’s Pimlico Race Course Study Workgroup, a step in the right direction for our city. We must work together to ensure that Baltimore retains its illustrious history, its jewel – a third of the Triple Crown, at the Pimlico racetrack. One last example of legislation introduced this session is House Bill 1197. 1 in 59 children falls on the autism spectrum, and boys are four times as likely to be diagnosed. An estimated 500,000 individuals with autism will become adults this decade. Current services end with the public school system and pediatric healthcare, but autistic adults need career services, higher education or vocation-

al training and adult healthcare. (Statistics from www.autismspeaks.org.) I am therefore proud to be a co-sponsor of House Bill 1197, which would assemble a taskforce for adults with autism spectrum disorder. This taskforce would bring together experts to help our neighbors remain healthy, strong, contributing members of the community. Another important topic is the opioid crisis that we are experiencing. As many of you know, the opioid crisis is an epidemic that I have been concerned about and focused on for many years. It is an epidemic that touches the lives of many of us, and this epidemic does not discriminate. I, and likely many of you, have personally seen the effects this epidemic has on families. I have been working on combatting this crisis as a felony narcotics prosecutor in Baltimore City, and I work to prosecute drug dealers and reduce the amount of drugs that are on the street. Unfortunately, the opioid crisis has taken an extreme and dangerous turn in our State with fentanyl coming into the picture. Fentanyl is extremely potent and a lot more fatal than heroin. Fentanyl is being sold to children in our community without them even realizing it, as fentanyl is being used to cut other drugs that children in our community are purchasing. It has even been alleged by law enforcement that fentanyl is being mixed with marijuana that is being sold to children in our community. I am therefore extremely honored to have been selected by the Speaker of the House of Delegates to be a member of the House Opioid Workgroup. This opioid epidemic is a non-partisan issue, and as I stated, it does not discriminate. This workgroup therefore consists of a group of bipartisan legislators working to battle this crisis that affects the lives of so many of us. I look forward to the rest of a very successful session representing District 41! Please know that I value and appreciate hearing from my constituents. If I can ever be of assistance, please call my office at 410-841-3268 or email me at Dalya.Attar@house.state.md.us. Sincerely, Delegate Dalya Attar

altimore City Councilman Ytzy Schleifer rushed to the scene of the fire at The

Imperial which began at 9:08 AM on Feb. 20. There was tremendous damage on the third floor, and the unit’s directly underneath, as well as the unit directly above the location of the origination of the fire.

Schleifer assisted in relocating all 3rd floor residents as well as the others affected. He worked closely with the Office of Emergency Management as well as the Baltimore City Fire Department and the Red Cross, ensuring that everything was handled immedi-

ately and in an orderly fashion. In the meantime, Schleifer was in contact with Harvest Fair, a new grocery store on Wabash Ave., that donated snacks and water for the residents to have until their living situations are are somewhat more settled.

Reidler Family of Baltimore Meets Rav Chaim Kanievsky on ‘Journey of a Lifetime’ to Eretz Yisroel

group of inspiring teenagers recently enjoyed a special journey to Eretz Yisroel as part of Chai Lifeline’s annual Wish at the Wall program. The trip is Chai Lifeline’s celebration of life for teenagers who have either completed treatment for cancer or are living with chronic illnesses or disabilities—alternating between the two groups each year. Each participant is invited to share the memorable journey with a parent. Wish at the Wall aims to instill the teens with a sense of confidence, joy and hope—providing them with the full Eretz Yisroel “experience,” while accommodating their every medical need. With wheelchairs, walkers and respirators in tow, the group has traveled across the country, visiting Masada, the Golan and Kineret, as well some of the holiest Jewish locations, including the Kotel and Tzfat. Today, the teens enjoyed a special meeting with HaRav Chaim Kanievsky in Bnei Brak, who offered the group brachos and words of chizuk.

“It was amazing,” said Yehoshua Reidler of Baltimore, Maryland. “I felt like I was in the presence of the Gadol Hador – it was such an amazing feeling!” “This trip has been the trip of a lifetime for my son,” said Rabbi Eliezer Reidler, Yehoshua’s father. “And tonight’s visit with Rav Chaim was the pinnacle of his excitement on this trip.” Phil Roitman, of La Crescenta, California, who is traveling along with his daughter Rachel, said, “It was a very spiritual, moving experience. I was blessed to be there and receive all kinds of special blessings and felt humbled to be in his presence.” “This is a unique and incredible experience on so many levels,” said Rabbi Shlomo Crandall, director of Chai Lifeline Midwest and trip organizer. “The medical needs of these teens, many of whom have attended Camp Simcha Special, Chai Lifeline’s camp for children with disabilities or chronic illness, are very complex. This would be a very difficult trip, perhaps

impossible, to make on their own.” Rabbi Crandall believes the highlight of Wish at the Wall is the friendships formed among the group members as well as the special parent-teen bonding over the course of the trip. “Wish at the Wall helps parents see the possibilities for their children,” he said. “In many cases, it changes the entire dynamic of the relationship and sets the stage for greater independence in the future.” Chai Lifeline is grateful to the Hartman Family, whose foresight and initial support made Wish at the Wall possible, and whose foundation

continues to take the lead on this and other Chai Lifeline programs in the Midwest. Chai Lifeline is the international children’s health support network, providing emotional, social, and financial support to children with life-threatening or lifelong illnesses and their families. Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion Special Event Honoring Rabbi and Rebbetzin Hauer March 2, 2019

T

his Motzei Shabbos, March 2, the Baltimore community will gather to honor Rabbi and Mrs. Hauer, the Rav and Rebbetzin of Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion, with an evening of hakaras hatov and celebration for all that Rabbi and Rebbetzin Hauer have done for the shul, the community, and Klal Yisroel. Over the past twenty-five years, Rabbi and Rebbetzin Hauer have built BJSZ into a shul which serves not only its members, but also the broader Jewish community, with Torah and Tefilah every day, all day. Under Rabbi Hauer’s leadership, BJSZ offers widely attended educational events for the entire community and serves as the ven-

ue for a host of opportunities provided by other organizations. At BJSZ, the Hauers have created a warm Jewish educational environment, where Jews celebrate Judaism. Rebbetzin Hauer shares her nurturing personality, deep love of Klal Yisroel and her vast knowledge with women in the shul as well as students at Maalot, which is housed on the second floor of the BJSZ building. Rabbi Hauer’s thoughts are original: they imitate no template or zeitgeist. Hundreds of Rabbi Hauer’s classes have been recorded and are listened to by thousands of students on the Internet. The theme of the special event honoring the Hauers, Aleinu v’al Kol Yis-

roel, encapsulates their efforts over the past twenty-five years, as the warmth, intelligence and inclusivity of their teaching and leadership have reached beyond the walls of BJSZ, spread across Baltimore’s Jewish community and reached into the land of Israel. Whether by teaching small chaburas, forging relationships with communal leaders across Baltimore, or leading missions to Israel, Rabbi and Rebbetzin Hauer share a sincere and infectious love of Torah and an appreciation of all Jews that has transformed lives around the world. The evening of gratitude for Rabbi and Rebbetzin Hauer on the evening of March 2nd culminates a special

Shabbos. During Shabbos at BJSZ, HaRav Moshe Mendel Glustein, HaRav Yehoshua Hartman and Mr. Moishe Bane, President of the Orthodox Union, will speak about the rabbonim who have influenced Rabbi Hauer and the impact that he has had on Klal Yisroel. To participate in this event, either by attending the dinner at Beth Tfiloh on March 2nd and/or by putting an ad in the journal of appreciation, or to learn more about the special speakers that Shabbos, please contact Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion’s office at office@ bjsz.or or 410-764-6810. What is your area of expertise? I have been a public-school teacher since 2003. I worked in 4th and 5th grade for many years, and I have been a Gifted and Talented (GT) Resource Teacher working with children in grades K-5 for the past 10 years. Everyone has heard of “No Child Left Behind”. In my area, we also believe in “No Child Held Back”. All children must be taught at their level, including students in need of advanced instruction. My views on education are based on nearly 20 years in the field at the elementary level, working in what has been consistently ranked as one of the top public school systems in the United States. How do you identify a child as GT?

Shouldn’t a parent always want their child in the most challenging class? Absolutely not. Should a genius 10year old be allowed to drive a car even if his legs don’t reach the pedals? A child should be taught at the appropriate instructional level. Pushing them prematurely into more challenging classes is unfair to them as it is a set-up for failure. What are some key components to

effective instruction? It should be student-centered, student-driven, and differentiated. It should leverage a collaborative teaching model in small groups, limit direct instruction, and be inquiry-based. The teacher should clearly identify the goal/ objective/standard to be learned, model for the students, provide time for practicing the skill, and allow for some sort of closure that assesses the mastery of the lesson’s objective. If the subject is skill-based, such as in the case of math, there must be homework. Anyone who thinks homework is unnecessary, especially in math, is deluding themselves. No one ever mastered gemarrah without chazarah. What do you like to see when you walk into a classroom? Children laughing. Students should be engaged in the instruction. That may mean a room is noisy, and that’s okay, so long as the noise comes from learning. My students spend 60-70% of class time discussing and debating in small groups (3-5 students). I provide direct instruction the remaining 30-40% of the time. Engagement does NOT mean students are completing worksheets at their desks in silence. Working with partners, b’chavrusah, or in small groups is effective. What do you dislike? Students sitting in rows as opposed to small groups of 4-5 can be indicative

of a teacher-centered instructional model as opposed to a student-centered one. I find it to be exponentially less effective and, quite frankly, often a substitute for an appropriate behavior management system. Also, using technology should be strategic. It should not be used in place of direct instruction nor as an end in itself. Technology must be leveraged effectively to help a child learn. Otherwise, it is simply a distraction. Teaching and learning should be reflective and collaborative for all stakeholders, including teachers, students, administrators, and parents. How can all of those stake-holders effectively work together to meet the needs of the system? That’s a mistake. I believe that while the decisions we make should consider the needs of the system, at the end of the day they MUST be based on what’s best for the students. All stake-holders need a way to communicate openly and honestly. I am a big believer in surveying your audience. Every single professional development meeting I have ever participated in was followed up with a survey as to its effectiveness in relation to the stated objectives. Schools must survey their students, parent body, and teachers. They can leverage that which they learn from these surveys to make effective change for the needs of the students. In our age of technology, creating surveys and administering them is as simple as can be.

How did you end up in Baltimore? My wife Ruchie (Cohen) is a Baltimorean, and we moved here from New Jersey after I finished my first year teaching in Kushner Hebrew Academy. I have always loved how Baltimore has that “out of town” feel to it.

The answer is akin to “How do we keep kosher?” It is complex and beyond the scope of this interview. All children have talents, the presentation of which depends on the subject as well as the various stages of life. Some children are academically gifted in mathematics or writing while others are musically and artistically gifted. That being said, every child in our building is evaluated based on multiple data points every year for applicable GT opportunities. This includes formal testing results (ex: PARCC scores) as well as anecdotal scores obtained through Talent Spotting Lessons (TSL) conducted in every classroom with the assistance of the homeroom teacher. An additional score is obtained via a writing sample, when applicable, based upon the TSL. There are additional pieces of data we look at as well in order to have a holistic view of each child. This allows us to best determine if a class will benefit a child instructionally.

The Week In News

Tensions Escalate on Temple Mount

Tensions escalated on Friday on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount after thousands of Muslims forcibly took over a part that has been closed off by Israel since 2003 and a prominent Muslim cleric was subsequently arrested. In what is known as the “Status Quo,” the Jordanian Waqf (Islamic trust) has maintained administrative rule over Judaism’s holiest site since its

capture in the 1967 Six Day War. The Waqf harasses non-Muslim visitors on the Mount and has banned Jewish visitors from praying. On Friday, thousands of Muslims forcibly took over the Gate of Mercy, which had been closed by Israeli Police since 2003. Yelling “Allahu akhbar” (G-d is great) and radical Islamic slogans, the worshippers easily overran Israeli barriers and threw fireworks and rocks at police. The gate had been closed in 2003 after Israeli intelligence discovered that the Waqf subcommittee managing the site was riddled with members of the Hamas terror organization. It is unclear what caused the reversal in policy and what lay behind the decision by police to stand down on Friday after being challenged by the hostile mob. Following the takeover, jubilant Arab leaders said that it was the beginning of a widespread struggle to remove Israel’s control from the disputed site. Upon visiting the site, Arab-Muslim Israeli lawmaker Ahmad Tibi told those assembled that penetrating the Gate of Mercy was “an important and

significant step” and called for a Temple Mount “without the entry of settlers and Jewish politicians from the right.” On Sunday, detectives arrested Waqf head Sheikh Abdel-Azeem Salhab and his deputy Sheikh Najeh Bkeirat over what police said was the key role they played in recent clashes at the site. A Waqf official said that the early-morning arrest was extremely unusual for police, who usually try to avoid detaining Waqf officials due to the sensitivity of their positions. “He’s the most senior Jordanian figure in the Palestinian territories,” the official told Haaretz. “Twenty years ago, if the police wanted to interrogate the mufti, they would call and invite him, but coming to a 75-year-old’s home like that at 5 A.M. is unacceptable.” Authorities say that the current atmosphere on the Temple Mount is the most volatile that is has been since Israel installed metal detectors on the Temple Mount back in the summer of 2017. Following the murder of two Israeli policemen at the Al Aqsa Mosque, police had erected metal detectors at all

of the entrances to the sensitive site in a bid to prevent the Temple Mount from turning into a terrorist stronghold. The move enraged the Waqf, who refused to allow Muslims to enter the Temple Mount until the metal detectors were removed. Fearing mass riots by Israeli Arabs, the Israeli government dismantled the metal detectors after only a week, handing the Waqf a significant victory.

The Week In News jamin Netanyahu for working to bring the far-right Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) party into the Knesset. Netanyahu had arranged for Otzma to run together with the Religious Zionist Jewish Home and National Union factions. The premier’s actions stemmed from a fear that Otzma would take away votes from other parties yet not cross the electoral threshold, which stands at 4 Knesset seats. Otzma is known as an extreme right-wing party headed by followers of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, a rabbi and former lawmaker whose Kach party was outlawed by the Knesset in 1986 for racism. After the merger was approved, a slew of Jewish organizations in the United States released strong condemnations for enabling what they called a racist movement to return to Israel’s parliament. The American Jewish Council (AJC) said in statement on Friday that while it “does not normally comment on political parties and candidates during elections” it was forced to do so because “the views of Otzma Yehudit are reprehensible.”

The statement added that “it is up to Israel’s Central Elections Commission to determine, as it has done in the past, whether Otzma Yehudit can be listed on the ballot on Election Day.” The AJC’s statement was also shared on Twitter by the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), in what is a rare rebuke of Israel’s government by the powerful Israel lobby. More declarations poured in from the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations and the Reform movement, with leader Rich Jacobs likening Otzma to “the KKK.” However, some Orthodox Jewish organizations bucked the condemnations and made it clear that they did not oppose the move. The National Council of Young Israel, which represents 175 synagogues, said that it “understands what Prime Minister Netanyahu did, and he did it to have ministers of the national religious and national union parties in his coalition.” The Zionist Organizations of America (ZOA) blasted Jewish organizations opposing Otzma Yehudit as “Nazi-name-calling against Jewish candidates.”

With polls showing the right and left wing bloc’s tied ahead of the upcoming elections in April, Netanyahu brokered the merger between Otzma Yehudit and the Jewish Home and National Union factions out of fear that all three parties would otherwise fail to make it into the Knesset. To move the merger forward, Netanyahu promised the Jewish Home that it would receive the Education and Housing Ministries should he form the next government and added Jewish Home MK Rabbi Eli Ben Dahan to a realistic spot on the Likud’s Knesset list. Amid rising criticism over the move, Netanyahu pointed out the “hypocrisy” of the left for opposing Otzma Yehudit while remaining open to including anti-Israel Arab parties such as Balad in a future left-wing coalition. “Such hypocrisy and double standards from the left,” Netanyahu wrote on Twitter on Saturday evening. “They condemn a bloc on the right with right wing parties while the left worked to bring extremist Islamists into Knesset to create a bloc.… The height of absurdity.”

Topping the list was Spain, followed by Italy, Iceland, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, Australia, Singapore, Norway. The United States ranked far below at number 35, with the report noting its dropping life expectancy due to “drug overdoses and suicides.” Want to live healthily? Bloomberg credited Spain’s “Mediterranean diet, supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts” for its high ranking and predicted that the average lifespan would rise to 86 by 2040, the world’s highest. The United States, meanwhile, is expected to see its average lifespan drop to 80 due to obesity and its drug epidemic. Israel’s health system has long been lauded by experts for its mix of affordable yet professional healthcare. Last year, Bloomberg found that Israel’s health system is the sixth most efficient in the world, behind Hong Kong, Singapore, Spain, Italy and South Korea.

Israel 10th Healthiest Country in the World

A new investigation by the Times of Israel details how an alleged illicit deal hatched by Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu left Israelis citizens to suffer from one of the slowest average internet rates in the world. In what is known as the Case 4000 investigation, police say that Netanyahu exploited his position of Communications Minister, which he served in addition to his job as the prime minister from 2014 to 2017, to halt a regulatory reform that would have hurt the Bezeq communications behemoth in exchange for fawning press from the Walla online news platform

The Bloomberg Healthiest Countries Index has ranked Israel as the 10th healthiest country in the world, a drop of one position from last year’s rankings. The index lists 169 countries according to various factors that influence the health of its citizens. Bloomberg says that it “grades nations based on variables including life expectancy, while imposing penalties on risks such as tobacco use and obesity.

The Week In News is expected to announce his indictment of Netanyahu next week, in a move that is likely to shake up Israeli politics. The reform in question would have forced Bezeq to lease out its mammoth internet infrastructure to competing businesses in an effort to open the market to competition. Formally a government-owned company, Bezeq has a virtual monopoly on broadband internet connections, with a market share topping 95%.

Communications Ministry officials had long attempted to pass the reform, which they said would have caused Israelis to enjoy faster internet speeds. Due to the lack of competition over the years, Bezeq has refrained from upgrading its infrastructure over the years, leaving Israelis to lag behind the rest of the world. According to a report by the think tank M-Lab published this past August, Israel ranks 70th in overall internet speed and is quickly losing pace

in the rest of the world. Among other things, the report found that the Jewish State has an average download speed of 7.64 megabits per second, far behind the global average of 9.10 Mbps. The proposed reform had been in the works for years and was expected to improve Israel’s economy tremendously due to the upgraded internet speeds the competition would bring with it. Yet after Netanyahu appointed his close confidant Shlomo Filber as Communications Ministry CEO in

2015, the reform stalled; Filber ordered an extended review process before scrapping the regulatory reform entirely. The appointment of Filber had raised eyebrows when it was first announced. A senior political aide, Filber had no experience in communications. With a CEO without any professional experience in the industry and without a full-time Communications Minister, police now say that Filber’s appointment was solely intended to enable him to scrap the proposed reform in exchange for the favorable press coverage. Filber has since turned state’s witness and his testimony has been central to the case against Netanyahu. As Mandelblit gears up to indict Netanyahu for his illicit quid pro quo, experts are left shaking their heads and wondering what might have been. “Filber gave Bezeq an advantage,” a senior Communications Ministry official told the Times of Israel, “because it leaves the monopoly with Bezeq, as it controls the only assets that reach the homes of the users. Once competitors deploy their fibers within the Bezeq ducts, they can offer consumers higher speeds and a better quality of products, which would force Bezeq to do the same. But this never happened. And that was detrimental to consumers. It harmed their interests and their ability to gain faster internet speeds. “Today Israel is lagging behind developed countries in the deployment of fiber to the home installation. We are lagging behind in the jump to the next generation of internet speeds.”

The Week In News a significant threat to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s decade-long rule. The joint list, which is titled “Blue and White,” was joined by ex-IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, who commanded the military from 2007 until 2011. Moshe “Bogie” Ya’alon, another former IDF Chief of Staff and defense minister, already merged with Hosen L’Yisrael last month. The union of the two center-left parties into one general-heavy list came following marathon negotiations managed by Ashkenazi, who pushed Lapid and Gantz “to put aside their egos for the sake of the country.” The merger was announced on Thursday morning, just ahead of the final deadline for parties to submit their list for the April 9th elections. Polls show that the united party is expected to get between 34 and 36 seats, more than the estimated 30 seats surveys show the Likud pulling in. Upon announcing the new Blue and White party, Gantz said that his party will finally topple Prime Minster Netanyahu from power. Netanyahu has

been prime minister since 2008, the second-longest ever term for an Israeli leader. “Today we are changing the face of Israel,” Gantz asserted. “In the past decade something has gone wrong. Israel has lost its way. “The government has incited division in Israeli society; it’s a government that divides and rules. We’re here to say, ‘enough.’ Instead of division, we want unity,” added Gantz. “Instead of extremism, we want dignity. Instead of fraction, we propose national reconciliation.” “We are creating a ruling party. The Israeli public will go to the polls on the 9th of April to choose what kind of country they want, what sort of country their children will live in: a country of investigations, corruption and incitement or a country of hope, resilience and a promise for the future,” said Yair Lapid. “Netanyahu chose Rabbi Meir Kahane’s people as his partners. We choose each other, and more than that, we choose the citizens of Israel.”

Lapid was referring to Netanyahu’s successful efforts to persuade the Religious Zionist Jewish Home party to unite with the radical Otzma Yehudit faction, who are led by followers of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane. Under the terms of the agreement, the Blue and White party will be led by Gantz for the first two years of the four-year term. After that period, Lapid will take over as prime minister while Gantz will replace him as foreign minister. Ya’alon is expected to return as defense minister, a post he held from 2013 until resigning in 2016 due to a falling out with Netanyahu.

and resolving the core issues.” “The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been used for years to incite extremism,” Kushner added. “For years, resistance to the nation of Israel has united the region but now it is changing.... We see that Iran is the greatest threat in the region.” The usage of the words “drawing the border” is seen by observers as key, as it provides hints that the Trump administration expects Israel to relinquish the West Bank, which it captured in 1967, to the Palestinian Authority and establish a Palestinian State. Trump has said that he will roll out the peace plan after Israel’s elections on April 9. The plan is expected to face wide resistance from the ruling Likud party, with Prime Minister Netanyahu recently warning that “a Palestinian State poses an existential threat to the State of Israel.”

Relief for Stranded Train

U.S. Special Envoy Jared Kushner confirmed during a rare television interview this week that the Trump administration expects Israel to support a Palestinian State and concede parts of the West Bank as part of the “Deal of the Century.” Kushner has been tasked with hammering out the aforementioned deal that attempts to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While exact details are unknown, Kushner and his partner, Jason Greenblatt, are said to be attempting to gather support for a comprehensive move that would force other regional heavyweights such as Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to normalize relations with the Jewish State and form a broad anti-Iran coalition. Speaking with Sky News in Arabic on Sunday, Kushner said that “the American peace plan is very detailed and will focus on drawing the border

On Sunday, an Amtrak train hit a tree that had fallen on the tracks in Eugene, Oregon. Thankfully, none of the passengers – there were almost 200 onboard – were hurt, but the train was stuck in the snow for 36 hours after the collision. Finally, on Tuesday, the train began to be pulled by a Union Pacific locomotive back towards the station. It took crews many hours to clear the tracks so the train could be moved. The severe weather was a particular problem for the train. Stuck on the locomotive, passengers could see nearby Oregon Highway 58, closed due to snow and ice. The Week In News fallen during those 36 hours passengers were stuck on the train. Eugene, home to the University of Oregon about 45 miles northwest, had a record-setting 9.5 inches Monday, the weather service said. Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari told CNN that none of the 183 passengers and dozen crew members were injured, but that after the accident “conditions further deteriorated with numerous track blockages from snow and fallen trees.” Passengers kept themselves upbeat despite the draining ordeal. “It’s just been like a giant kumbaya party,” Rebekah Dodson told CNN early Tuesday. “Strangers are playing cards. A teenager played his ukulele to kids to get them to sleep. Ladies who have never met before were dancing in aisles.” The train had power and there was enough food onboard to food the passengers. Even so, people have places to go and being stuck on a train is no fun. Some Los Angeles-bound college students have “panicked” because they don’t think their professors will accept their excuse for missing class.

Teacher Strikes Rock the Nation

Last week, all of Oakland’s 2,300 teachers walked off the job amid a pay dispute with the city. Oakland’s educators are not alone. From California to Colorado to West Virginia, teachers all across the United States have gone on strike in recent months in a phenomenon that only seems to be spreading. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, 400,000 teachers participated in work stoppages over this past year, making 2018

the biggest year since 1986 for teacher strikes. There is no one reason that stands behind the slew of work stoppages. Teachers all across the U.S. are voicing a litany of complaints, from low salaries to demands for a smaller class size and larger education budgets. Yet according to Randi Weingarten, who heads the American Federation of Teachers, educators are finally standing up for themselves after suffering for years from low pay and substandard conditions. “Nobody believes that striking is a first resort,” Weingarten told CNN. “It is a last resort. Nobody is strike-happy. But they get to it.” Weingarten added that teachers are fed up with being tasked with an increasingly heavy workload with an accompanying rise in pay or resources. “We expect public schools to do everything right now,” she says. “We’ve expected them to basically be the only institution in America that is about the aspirations of every single child.” The low pay that educators suffer from can be seen in the numbers. A study by NPR found that teachers make less than anyone else possessing similar experience and education, with millions not covered by Social Security. More than a million teachers aren’t covered by Social Security. The study also found that 59% of teachers were forced to work a second job to make ends meet, while 86% said that they were forced to lay out for classroom supplies. Work disputes in Oakland and Pennsylvania are also caused by the aforementioned state’s embrace of charter schools, which has rankled teacher unions. While state officials say that charter schools cut costs and expand parent choice, teachers at the schools say that they suffer from the same conditions as their public school counterparts with the additional burden from a lack of union representation. “We charter school teachers face the brunt of privatization. As you know, we’re forced to work weekends, have huge workloads, bad benefits, no public pension, and we’re often paid less than even the lowest paid public school teachers. Enough!” wrote the Oakland Education Association website.

$21M for 39 Years in Jail Craig Coley, who spent 39 years in jail for a murder he did not commit, will receive $21 million in compensation from California’s Simi Valley. Coley, 71, was sentenced to life in prison for allegedly murdering Rhonda Wicht and her 4-year-old son in 1978. He was cleared on appeal in 2017 after spending nearly four decades behind bars due to new DNA evidence.

innocence, and jailers said that he was a model prisoner. In a later interview with the LA Times, Coley described the feelings of loneliness he experienced during his sojourn behind bars and the hardship he experienced as one imprisoned despite knowing he was innocent. “It’s not something you can describe other than it’s painful,” Coley said. “I went four decades not being able to grieve the woman and child I loved.”

Blast from the Past Now, Simi Valley says that it will pay Coley a staggering $21 million for his wrongful imprisonment in what is the longest sentence ever overturned in California. $4.9 million of Coley’s total $21 million payout will come from Simi Valley, while the rest will be paid for by the city’s insurance. City officials said that it had decided to settle the lawsuit instead of bringing the case to court due to the high personal toll the “travesty” took on Coley, “While no amount of money can make up for what happened to Mr. Coley, settling this case is the right thing to do for Mr. Coley and our community,” City Manager Eric Levitt said. Coley received a pardon from then-Gov. Jerry Brown in 2017 and was awarded another $2 million by the California Victim Compensation Board a year later – $140 for each of the 13,991 days Coley was held “illegally behind bars, away from society, employment, and (his) loved ones.” Police had suspected Coley after Wicht and her son were strangled to death at their Simi City home. Neighbors told police that they saw him leaving the apartment shortly after the murders occurred. A jury agreed, sentencing him to life in prison without parole. Throughout his long prison stay, Coley never stopped proclaiming his

This story is really personal, I mean, purse-onal. When crews began to demolish Jeffersonville High School in Indiana, they stumbled upon a few findings. One of them was a purse. Inside the handbag was an ID, which showed that the purse belonged to Martha Ina Ingham. Using social media, they tracked down the purse’s owner – who is now 82 years old. “Lost and Found Alert: Martha Ina Ingham’s handbag from 1954 has been found in the demolition,” Greater Clark County Schools posted on Facebook. “We would love to return it to her or her family!” An eagle-eyed relative saw the post and reached out to Ingham, now living 1,000 miles away in Florida. Martha said the purse bought back fond memories of her youth. “It brings back a lot of memories and a lot of people I haven’t heard of in a long time,” she said. “What a good time we had in high school.” Inside the purse Ingham found a track meet ribbon, lipstick, and a Juicy Fruit gum wrapper, minus the gum. The greatest discovery, however,

The world’s largest bee has a 2.5inch wingspan and enormous mandibles, so you would think that it would be easy to spot. But Wallace’s Giant Bee hasn’t been seen since 1981, and scientists thought it was extinct. Now, researchers say that they’ve spotted the bee in January in the Indonesian province of North Maluku on the Maluku Islands. They detected a solitary female bee after investigating the region for five days, and a photographer captured the first-ever images of a living Wallace’s Giant Bee (Megachile pluto) at the insect’s nest in an active termite mound. “It was absolutely breathtaking to see this ‘flying bulldog’ of an insect that we weren’t sure existed anymore,” photographer Clay Bolt, who captured the images of the giant, said in a statement published by The University of Sydney in Australia. Little is known about these elusive insects’ habits. The bees’ dark-colored bodies measure about 1.5 inches (3.5 cm) in length — about as long as a human thumb — and they build communal nests on termite dwellings in trees, Adam Messer, a researcher who was with the Department of Entomology at the University of Georgia in 1984, wrote in a study published then in the Journal of the Kansas Entomological Society. A student in China beat the system when she had her pet robot do her homework for her. The homework assignment was given over the Lunar New Year break and involved copying Chinese phrases dozens of times. The assignment was meant to help students read and write in Chinese but this student was perhaps smarter than everyone else. The teen spent 800 yuan – around $120 – to buy a robot that mimicked her handwriting. She then had the robot copy the phrases for her to complete the assignment – which took it two days to do. But all good things must come to an end. The teen’s mother, noticing that her teen was finished with the assignment quickly (I mean, could a two-day assignment be considered “quick”?!), entered her child’s room and discovered the robot. She subsequently smashed the machine to bits. On social media, complaining about her genius/lazy daughter, the mother wrote: “It can help you with homework, but can it help you on tests?” The real test, you know, is the test of life.

“We had to take this pig into custody, he was involved in a disturbance... someone was tryin’ to blow his house down,” police wrote on their Facebook page. Officers used Oreos to lure Charlotte close enough so they could attach a leash around her neck. Safe and sound, Charlotte was brought huffing and puffing back to her owners, although it is not known if they live in a straw or a brick house.

Ordering the pastry will set you back a cool $100 for a circular piece of dough. But it’s not an ordinary fritter you’ll be frittering away your money on. This doughnut contains 24-karat gold and Cristal champagne. Bjorn Delacruz, the pastry chef at the eatery, said the Gold Cristal Ube Donut is loaded with luxurious ingredients.

Each doughnut costs $100, although you can save some dough if you buy a dozen – that’ll set you back a mere $1,000. Customers say the doughnut is sweet but not over-the-top, although you may want to split this indulgence with a friend – gold always tastes better when you have someone to share it with. And yes, I’m able to come down to Florida with you for a taste this weekend.

Attempting to set a Guinness World Record, construction equipment manufacturer Caterpillar took out their big blocks to play Jenga. Chad Cremeens, field operations manager and Caterpillar Inc., conducted the world record attempt as part of the company’s educational initiative. The attempt featured a 320E excavator, a TH514C telehandler, a 277D multi-terrain loader, a M316D material handler and a 349E excavator being used to manipulate the 27 laminated pine beams, which each measured 8 feet long, 2 feet and 8 inches wide, and 1 foot and 4 inches high. Each block weighed about 600 pounds. Playing with blocks of that size is no easy feat. In addition to the heavy planning that went into the attempt, safety was also a concern. The game went on for 28 hours and ended up with 13 layers, for a maximum height of about 20 feet. “When we were conceptualizing unique ways, we could showcase Cat machines at work and someone suggested a game of Jenga, the room erupted in excitement,” said Archie

Lyons, Caterpillar Brand creative director. He added, “Hasbro and Caterpillar have long recognized and celebrated ‘the builders’ among us, and this project was a natural fit,” he said. Sounds like they’ve been around the block.

Kid-Proof Ever sit next to a crying infant on a flight to Florida? How about to Israel? Or to Korea? A mother of an infant decided to preemptively apologize to all those who would be disturbed by her fourmonth-old’s crying on a recent flight from Seoul, Korea, to San Francisco, California. The new mom handed out goodie bags to all 200 passengers on the ten-hour flight before it got off the ground.

“Hello, I’m Junwoo and I’m 4 months old,” the note included with the goodie bags read. “Today, I am going to the U.S. with my mom and grandmom to see my aunt. I’m a little bit nervous and scary because it’s my first flight in my life, which means that I may cry or make too much noise. I will try to go quietly, though I can’t make any promises. Please excuse me. So my mom prepared little goodie bag for you! It was some candies and earplugs. Please use it when it’s too noisy because of me. Enjoy your trip. Thank you.” The bag included earplugs and candies, but it was more about the touching gesture by the mother who was concerned for her fellow passengers. Of course, babies being babies, you always need to expect the unexpected. On this flight, despite the goodie bags and sweet note, baby Junwoo slept the whole time. So everyone on the flight was able to sleep too. Junwoo, you’re invited to sit next to me anytime.

Torah Thought

Sensitive Souls

THE BALTIMORE JEWISH HOME

By Rabbi Zvi Teichman

The Torah reiterates several times the magnificent partnership between Betzalel and Ohaliav who both possessed the requisite supernal wisdom and skill that was needed for the proper construction of the Tabernacle and all its holy and intricate vessels and components. The Torah punctuates at every mention of this pair the fact that Betzalel descended from the family of Yehuda, while Ohaliav’s lineage was from Dan. G-d selected these two, we are taught, to demonstrate that whether one derives from royalty; the tribe of Yehuda, or from the ‘lowly’ tribe of Dan; the son of Bilhah who was merely a maidservant to Rachel, they are both equal in the eyes of G-d. Was the old rivalry between the sons of Leah and the children of the maidservants, that came to light when the brothers infamously taunted Yosef for defending their honor, still prevalent these many years later? After having suffered collectively the terrible years of slavery in Egypt and having experienced ‘with one united heart’ the revelation at Mount Sinai and the giving of the Torah, could they still have possibly harbored remnants of those old biases? Would this noble nation need to be taught a lesson in ‘affirmative action’ by hiring a member of a tribe that was victim to discrimination? This alliance between Yehuda and Dan reappeared in the days of King Solomon, a descendant of Yehuda, when he enlisted Chiram, a master artisan, a member of the tribe of Naftali whose mother hailed from the tribe of Dan, to head the efforts to construct

the Temple.)‫(שמ"ר מ ד‬ The Midrash further states that the Moshiach, that famed heir to the Davidic dynasty, who will restore that glorious kingdom, herald the final redemption, and restore the Temple, would have a mother who traced her ancestry to Dan as well. ‫(ילק"ש ויחי רמז‬ )‫קס‬ Despite several other tribes that descend from the maidservants of the matriarchs it is Dan alone who is termed ‫הירוד‬, the lowliest, or more accurately the most ‘devalued’ among the tribes. What distinguished Dan from the others that earned him specifically this title of ‘honor’? Throughout our history the tribe of Dan seems to be extremely susceptible to ‘going off the derech’, opting out of belief and commitment to G-d. It is said that the graven image known as ‘Pesel Michah’, the ‘Image of Michah’, was brought out of Egypt and carried by the tribe of Dan even as they traversed the Reed Sea, and they eventually worshipped it publicly during the episode in the days of the Judges where this idol and its temple were situated among the tribe of Dan. )‫(שוחר טוב קא ב‬ The Torah describes how the Amalekites attacked the weaklings and stragglers who were spewed out from the protective Clouds of Glory. We are taught that these were the members of the tribe of Dan who were tainted with the sin of idolatry. The son of Shlomis bas Divri, a descendant of the tribe of Dan, who was fathered by an Egyptian taskmaster,

blasphemed G-d when he sought to pitch his tent among the tribe and was rejected since he lacked a paternal link to the tribe. Yeravam ben Nevat who seceded from the dominion of the House of David and went on to initiate the kingdom of Israel, established two temples where they worshipped the golden calves, with one of them located in the region of Dan where he found willing adherents to his renegade ways. Despite this propensity for rebellion it was the tribe of Dan who is termed the ‫מאסף לכל המחנות‬, the gatherer of all camps, not only due to their bringing up the rear and collecting lost items and stragglers that may have fallen behind, but more significantly for their uncanny ability to inspire all those who have fallen in their spirit and allegiance to G-d.‫(זוהר ויחי נפה"ח‬ )‫א ו ועוד‬ How is it that they are both the most vulnerable to sin yet possess that remarkable ability to draw those whom have strayed away to return? • Only in the last few decades have researchers identified a personality type termed Highly Sensitive People (HSP). It is not a disorder but merely a nature, a tendency of the soul to react to the world with extraordinary sensitivity. It affects nearly twenty percent of humanity without distinction between man and woman. Highly sensitive people are attuned to other people’s needs and are able to intuit feelings and attitudes. They process life and its experiences on a deeper level. They see the ‘greater picture’ more vividly, whether it is colors, scents or music. They contemplate decisions and are more emotionally reactive. They work extremely well with others but are more prone to anxiety, disappointment and depression. Their sensitivity obviously makes them more vulnerable to reacting to criticism more harshly. They are generally very creative, intelligent and capable. The profile of an HSP bespeaks a person who is empathetic and desirous of creating a world where justice and consideration rein, and everything

fits into its proper place. When a HSP senses injustice they react, whether emotionally or by action. They don’t simply roll with the punches as many non-HSPs are capable of. They need to find their place and define their role. When they aren’t acknowledged or validated they may withdraw, retreat and lapse into apathy or worse. It’s a double-edged sword. One who is overwhelmed by its sensitivity can fall to despair, but the one who can master those special qualities cannot only inspire others with their sensitivity in a way others cannot, they can access their heightened awareness to create a world of remarkable color, feelings, and meaning. • The ancestry of Dan began with an emotional appeal from Rachel to Yaakov. Not having merited children she turns to Yaakov challenging him to bless her with children otherwise she might as well be dead. Rachel clearly is one of the most sensitive figures in Torah. Who else could possibly empathize with Leah’s fear of falling into the claws of Esav, and be willing to relinquish her greatest aspiration and right, giving instead to Leah the secret password so that she would become Yaakov’s bride and be saved from her greatest fear, if not her super sensitive Rachel? That same quality of sensitivity compels Rachel to blurt out that if she cannot bear a child then how is she to define her godly role as a mother? Her appeal didn’t stem from selfishness but rather from a deep consciousness of the purpose and function of the world that summons man to discover its role in creating a ‘wholly’ universe. With that same passion she undertakes to ask of G-d that a child be born to her maidservant Bilhah, so that she may contribute her efforts in making the universe a better place. She calls the child Bilhah begets, ‫דן‬, Dan, from the language of judgment, declaring that G-d has judged her favorably and has validated her by accepting her plea to ‘right’ the universe by giving her a meaningful role. Dan later fathers his only child ‫חו־‬ ‫שים‬, Chushim, from whom the entire

large tribe will descend. Despite being deaf, Chushim is a remarkably sensitive individual. When Yehuda ‘roars like a lion’ in the court of Yosef to compel him to return Binyamin to his father, despite the great distance between them, as Chushim was with his father in Canaan, Chushim comes running to assist Yehuda and joins the chorus. HaRav Zev Wolf Einhorn of Horodna suggests that evidently it wasn’t his hearing Yehuda’s cry that grabbed his attention, as he was deaf and the distance was far too great to hear from afar, but it was an inner sensitivity that attuned him to Yehuda’s cry. )‫(ב"ר צג ז פי' מהרז"ו‬ It was the same Chushim whose sensitivity and sensibility wouldn’t tolerate Esav delaying the burial of Yaakov and famously beheads him. The very name ‫ חושים‬is rooted in ‫חוש‬, senses, referring to a profound and deep connection to the world around him and his sensitivity to injustice. This tribe struggled with their highly tuned souls that often led them astray in disappointment in the disorder in the world. But that same sensitivity in the hands of those who master their heightened senses can magically reel in these fragile souls and bring them to greatness others cannot achieve. There are souls among our nation that are fueled by the charisma of a Yehuda, the epitome of royalty, that can inspire others to join in the greater cause of promoting the will of G-d without any need to soothe or delegate any specific individual role to any single person. Simply by belonging to the greater collective spirit enables those who are less sensitive to roll with the punches and never get discouraged and stay in the fray. But there are the ‘Dan’ neshamos, exceptional souls who need definition and order in their being and life in order to stay the journey. These souls are destined to journey between passion and apathy until they discover their inner great-

ness through the efforts of those who validate and appreciate their qualities and contributions, permitting them to enrich our world with their special talents, unique perspectives and depth. Although Ohaliyav is mentioned earlier, Rashi chose to quote this aspect of his being from the ‘devalued’ of all tribes in the verse that describes how G-d endowed Betzalel and Ohaliyav, not only with the wisdom of skilled craftsmanship, but more importantly with the ability "‫"ולהורות‬, to teach others. ‫(שמות לה לד וברש"י ד"ה‬ )‫ואהליאב‬ Precisely because they were ‘highly sensitive persons’ and often felt devalued by the frustrations with the injustices of the world, they fought mightily to overcome this flaw and channel that extraordinary sensitivity to valuing those who walked the tightrope of sensitivity, uplifting them to new awareness of their special qualities, helping them come to appreciate themselves and the special roles they play in perfecting an imperfect world. Perhaps the very name ‫אהליאב‬, a contraction of the two words, ‫אהלי אב‬, my tent and father, accents his soul’s need to discover and define his very personal, ‘my tent’, in order to connect deeply to ‘father’, the Creator and His world. He was ‫בן אחיסמך‬, the son of Achisamach. ‫ אחיסמך‬as well is a contraction of the two words ‫אחי סמך‬, my brother and support. One who achieves the former goal of carving a role in this world that connects one to our Father in Heaven can then be a ‘brother’ to those who have ‘fallen’, by supporting and instilling that same renewed confidence that will ‘gather’ them back into the embrace of the ‘Clouds of Glory’. May we be supportive of these special souls, who in this era prior to the coming of the Moshiach are aplenty and yearning to find their meaningful place in the world, so that they may promote the beauty of G-d’s magnificent world as only they can.

DoubleTree by Hilton Baltimore North/ Pikesville in Major New Renovations and Initiative to Expand Kosher Program

The DoubleTree by Hilton Baltimore North/Pikesville is undergoing a major renovation that will include all of its public space and guest rooms. Included in this exciting initiative by its new owners, Blue Ocean, will be a special focus on the dynamic kosher community in the Northeast including the vibrant local Jewish community of Baltimore. Conveniently located just south of the Baltimore Beltway/I-695 and Reisterstown Road interchange (Exit 20) in the middle of the Northwest Baltimore business district, the DoubleTree is an attractive property to both corporate guests and tourists. The Pikesville hotel offers easy access to various area attractions. Thurgood Marshall (BWI) Airport is just 20 minutes away, while access to local MTA Metro station trains are only a short 5 minutes down the road. Amtrak connections at Baltimore’s Penn Station is also only fifteen minutes from the Pikesville hotel. Jonathan Ehrenfeld, President of

Blue Ocean, said: “We feel privileged to have the opportunity to significantly upgrade one of the most prized and recognizable properties in northern Baltimore.” He added: “Our aim is to attract the dynamic business and local community, which is why we will be emphasizing our offering of a very high quality kosher cuisine.” He continued: “Our prestigious DoubleTree brand is well known for its special care and hospitality and thanks to a modernization program that will po-

sition it with some of the prime hotel properties in the region, we will able to serve groups and events of all sizes.” According to Adam Wightman, General Manager of the DoubleTree, “the hotel is well positioned to offer groups the ultimate experience for their businesses and participants.” For Jewish groups planning conferences and conventions, its proximity to one of the nation’s most dynamic Jewish communities is a huge advantage as is its relatively short travel time to Washington DC, an important destination for many Jewish groups and visitors. To enhance the guest experience and to accommodate larger gatherings, the hotel is in the process of further expanding its already spacious ballrooms and meeting spaces by adding some 7,500 square feet to the existing footprint of 11,800 sq. ft. The hotel is also planning a full kosher kitchen which will offer guests and visitors alike a gourmet kosher experience. As much as the hotel is an ideal location for large group events, it is also a perfect setting for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah

or wedding celebration. Said Mr. Ehrenfeld: “In the next few months our renovations program will continue to unfold as the hotel fulfills a vision of being the ideal setting for both tourists and groups. “He continued: “It is the perfect location to spend a Shabbat with family or simply to be within walking distance of the celebrated Jewish community of Baltimore.” For tourists, Baltimore is rich with attractions and activities including Baltimore Inner Harbor, Fort McHenry National Monument, the historic Hippodrome Theatre, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the National Aquarium and so much more. At the end of the day, guests can enjoy a game of tennis at the Baltimore Health & Tennis facility attached to the hotel. There is also complimentary access to a full selection of exercise equipment, free weights, and aerobic machines. Six indoor tennis courts are available, by reservation at an additional charge. Isaac Neger of Sabra Tours, a veteran kosher hospitality and travel expert and one of the major initiators behind the hotel, called it “a concept whose time has come.” He added: “Baltimore and the region are ready for this truly stylish and modern kosher facility.” The DoubleTree is booking well into 2020 for all types of group events including kosher celebrations and conferences. Isaac Livni, the Kosher Events Coordinator at The DoubleTree Hilton at Pikesville, said that he already booked a full slate of organizational programs including Shabbatons. Chai Lifeline Enlists Army of Supporters to Fight Childhood Illness March 12-14 Crowdfunding Campaign Will Provide Critical Services to More Families Than Ever Before Chai Lifeline, the international children’s health support network, will launch a 48-hour “Join the Fight” campaign March 12 at noon EST. In the last year, Chai Lifeline provided critical support to more children with life-threatening and lifelong illnesses than ever before—a 15% year-over-year increase. This campaign will help Chai Lifeline meet the rapidly-growing need for its essential services. “Our goal is to raise at least $2

million, but more importantly, we want to enlist an ‘army of 18,000 supporters’ from across the globe to help in this effort,” said Rabbi Simcha Scholar, CEO of Chai Lifeline. “For more than 30 years, Chai Lifeline has always been there for the most vulnerable children and families in our community. Now, we’re asking the community to join us in the fight against childhood illness and help ensure that we can continue providing the programs and services

our families rely on.” Those Chai Lifeline programs and services include one-on-one family counseling; nourishing meals delivered to hospitals and homes; transportation to medical appointments; the summer experience of a lifetime for children with cancer and chronic illnesses at Camp Simcha and Camp Simcha Special medically-supervised overnight camps; Project Chai crisis intervention, trauma and bereavement workshops

for families, schools and communities; insurance advocacy; family retreats and respite; sibling mentoring and tutoring through i-Shine afterschool national programs, and so much more. bout three months ago, an emergency call comes in over the radio while I’m at work, alerting me to a man who had fallen from heights and was seriously injured just a few streets away, on Rothschild Boulevard. No other details are provided. I close my business and jump on my ambucycle. In less than a minute, I am en route to the incident. I take a chance and head towards the middle of Rothschild Boulevard until more details come over the radio. I prepare myself to turn in either direction down the boulevard that bisects the city. To my luck, and for the luck of the injured person, more details arrive over the radio just as I reach the street, and it turns out that I am only three buildings away from where the accident took place.

I arrive at the location a few seconds later. Eyewitnesses tell me that a young man who works as a window washer was near the fifth floor of the building when something went wrong, and he plummeted to the

On that day, I went back to my business, re-opened, and carried on doing what I was doing before I left. Some time went by, and two weeks ago I heard a rumor that the

same man who fell off the building was alive and recuperating in the hospital. More than that, he remembered that the first responders who arrived to help him were members of United Hatzalah. He had been putting the word out that he wanted to meet with the responders who saved his life and provided him with the initial emergency care. I was thrilled. I went to meet him, and the entire ride to the hospital I was going over the incident in my head. Then the moment arrived, and I saw the man and his family sitting around him, all of them highly emotional. I too was emotional. It isn’t often that I get to meet a person whose life I saved. I was speechless when I walked into his hospital room. So was he. The look on his face and the looks on the faces of his family members are all I will ever need to remember in order to keep going at this vocation to serve my community and help save lives. It’s a memory that I will never forget.

Rubik’s Cube Facts All of the following facts are true except for one fact. Can you figure out which one is not true? In 1974, 30-year-old Ernő Rubik, a professor of architecture in Hungary, invented the Rubik’s Cube when he had the idea of constructing a handheld puzzle game based on geometry that could help students understand spatial relations.

Speedcubers needs quick fingers and an even faster brain. Plus, of course, the right tools. Speedcubes are different to regular Rubik’s Cubes. They look the same – but a speed cube is lighter and easier to turn, making it faster to use.

The first Rubik’s Cube was sold in 1975 in a Budapest toy shop. At that time, it was called the Magic Cube. It was renamed The Rubik’s Cube is 1980.

In 2003, Dan Knights, a Cube enthusiast, jumped from a plane at 12,000 feet, giving him roughly 45 seconds of free fall time to solve the Cube before his parachute would have to be opened. (He drilled a hole in the Cube and tied it to a loop on his wrist so it wouldn’t fall.) The jump was successful: Knights solved it in 32 seconds.

Every legal way of solving the Rubik’s Cube can be done in 20 moves or less. Last May, 22-year-old Feliks Zemdegs, of Australia, captured the Guinness World Records title for the fastest time to solve a Rubik’s Cube, after he managed to solve it in just 4.22 seconds. In 1981, 12-year-old Patrick Bossert authored a book, You Can Do the Cube, which taught people how to solve the Rubik’s Cube. The book, originally meant for Bossert’s friends, ended up on the New York Times bestsellers list and quickly sold more than 750,000 copies.

Riddle me this? There is a mixture of purple, orange, and yellow crayons in a crayon box. The total number of crayons is 60. There are four times as many orange crayons as yellow crayons. There are also six more purple crayons than orange crayons. How many crayons of each color are there? See answer below

In a 2012 interview with CNN, Professor Rubik admitted it took him more than a month to solve the Cube when he first invented it. A Rubik’s Cube has 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible configurations. (Just in case you never counted that high, that’s more than 43 QUINTILLION possible configurations. If you had 43 quintillion dollars, you can spend a trillion dollars a day for the next 118 thousand years.) The TJH Centerfold Commissioner can solve Rubik’s Cube in 4.23…days.

You gotta be kidding Maurice calls his doctor’s office for an appointment. “I’m sorry,” says the receptionist, “we can’t fit you in for at least two weeks.” “But I could be dead by then!” says Maurice. “No problem,” replies the receptionist. “If your wife lets us know, we’ll cancel the appointment.”

Answer to Riddle Me This: There are 30 purple crayons, 24 orange crayons and 6 yellow crayons.

In 1995, Diamond Cutters International created a fully-functional Rubik’s Cube made out of 185 carats of diamonds. Its estimated current value is $1.5 million.

Over 400 million Rubik’s Cubes have been sold worldwide – making it the bestselling toy of all time.

Listen, I feel like I was fair and good. You can’t make everybody happy. You’re not going to buy people’s ability to be OK with you, and this seems to be a social media issue more than anything. I think it shouldn’t be, knowing that there was a complete, agreed-upon deal that not only did I meet but exceeded. So I certainly don’t lose sleep over this. My dear departed grandmothers...as well as my deceased parents, must be turning in their grave right now to see their family’s name, reputation and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics. Our planet is going to face disaster if we don’t turn this ship around. Dating Dialogue

What Would You Do If… Moderated by Jennifer Mann, LCSW of The Navidaters

Dear Navidaters,

B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M

I’ve been dating Chavie for several months. Things are looking pretty good, but we definitely have a couple of areas that I think are potentially problematic – maybe not super serious, but I really want to iron out all of the wrinkles before I actually ask Chavie to marry me. My parents have always been very into therapy in general. Any problem with any of the children, and we were off to speak to a professional! And I think they had the right idea. I guess they figured they didn’t have all of the answers or skills to deal with everything and figured a professional did. All in all, I think it was helpful for all of us growing into the adults we are today. Chavie comes from a background where the thought of going to a therapist is taboo and reflects something “crazy” about the person. I’ve tried to explain to her otherwise, but somehow she’s not changing her view. She refuses to go with me to a therapist to talk through our few little differences, saying that no marriage is perfect and that we’re smart and mature enough to work things through on our own. Should this be a deal breaker for me? She’s not budging, and though my concerns aren’t major in any way, I also worry that if once we’re married and we do have serious issues, she won’t be willing to go to a therapist with me and that could be a real problem. Should I just let it go, continue pushing, or decide that maybe Chavie may not really be the one for me since we have different attitudes when it comes to working on ourselves and relationships in general?

Our intention is not to offer any definitive

conclusions to any particular question, rather offer areas of exploration for the author and reader. The Panel The Rebbetzin Rebbetzin Faigie Horowitz, M.S. es, this is definitely a deal breaker. It is super serious in my opinion. Someone who is not willing to budge and unwilling to entertain the possibility of seeking professional help from trained therapists is rigid and unrealistic. This is not about differences between her family background and your family culture. She has no concept of negotiating differences as well as no negotiating skills. She is not a communicator nor is she open to hearing input from others – and you! Her beliefs about marriage seem to be skewed and negative. She isn’t either mature enough nor smart enough to work things out with a partner and is not willing to work at marriage. It’s my way or the highway is her modus operandi. Get out of her lane!

Y

The Mother Sarah Schwartz Schreiber, P.A. ’m sorry to do this. Cover your eyes; I’m turning the spotlight full tilt on you. With all the money your parents poured into your emotional health – paying “professionals” to help you deal with the stressors of childhood and adolescence (e.g., Lego Envy, Sports Inferiority Complex and post-Bar Mitzvah Blues), you haven’t learned a dang thing. I’m not surprised. In her classic books, The Blessing of a Skinned Knee and The Blessing of a B-minus, Dr. Wendy Mogel, the renowned child psychologist, warns of the potential harm when parents over-analyze, over-indulge, and over-protect their children from the inevitable growing pains and bruises of childhood. She cautions that children who are not allowed to experience frustration, disappointment, and

challenges will not grow into self-reliant, resilient adults. You, my handsome snowflake, are a perfect example. Despite all the time spent on therapists’ couches, basking in mental massage, you lack the confidence and coping skills to deal with the problematic areas – the minor “wrinkles,” you call them – in your budding relationship with Chavie. From your vague reference to these areas, I take it these trivial issues could most probably be resolved with open communication, respect and empathy – grown-up tools that both you and Chavie own and operate. Believe in yourself; prove to yourself (and your future wife) that you can talk and listen, give and take, request and compromise. The process may not be script perfect or psychologically endorsed but you will undoubtedly emerge psychologically stronger, with increased self-awareness and assurance that you’ve got the emotional wherewithal to be a great husband. Then, if all else fails, there’s always 1-800-Dating Coach.

Another Shadchan Tziporah Feldman don’t necessarily see this as a “deal breaker,” but I do think there are a few issues with your situation that should be addressed before you immediately run for the exit door. To begin with, since the little issues that you recognize between you and Chavie are not terribly big deals (and which couples don’t encounter a few hiccups along the way?), to begin with, you used the wrong language when you suggested speaking to a professional. Though Chavie and her family’s feelings about therapy are terribly old-fashioned and small-minded, perhaps using the word “therapy” triggered something scary for Chavie, making her believe that the little issues your referenced

are very serious and require serious intervention. You should have used the word “coach” when discussing getting some outside thoughts about your issues. It’s very possible that Chavie would have had a different reaction to the idea of meeting with a coach before taking things to the next level. I happen to believe that all couples who are getting serious would benefit from meeting with some sort of dating coach once or twice, just to sort out any present or potential obstacles that may be hanging around and unnecessary. This would be a great time to work them through. My second concern is that you two haven’t been able to talk through this difference successfully. You pulled from your background, Chavie pulled from her background, but there was no apparent ability to

understand one another better, any ability to challenge respectfully each other’s belief system and be able to come up with a compromise that respects but also confronts ideas from each of your childhoods. Before taking this relationship further, it’s important to know that you both have the ability to give a little, in order to reach a compromise.

The Single Tova Wein can understand why Chavie is having a strong and negative reaction to the idea of going to a therapist. For someone who grew up in a home where it was viewed as a last resort for “crazy people,” her knee jerk reaction seems normal. She clearly doesn’t see your issues as something so serious that the two of you shouldn’t be able to

I

professional help is as typical as running to the gym in the morning. For Chavie, it reflects something very extreme. You two probably don’t need to speak to a therapist right now if your issues are as minor as you say. But your question does make a very good point. If you should marry, and life should happen, as it often does, you two may be dealing with some situations that you couldn’t possibly resolve on your own without a professional getting involved. Then what? Will Chavie stubbornly say “never!” Or can she relent to the idea that there may be a time and a place where working with a professional is not only

Flexibilty from both partners is very important in a relationship. an option but very necessary. Without alarming Chavie at the moment, this conversation is something she may be willing to talk about in the safety of a dating coach. Somehow, that term shouldn’t be and isn’t threatening in any way. But if Chavie refuses even that idea, you might have your answer right then and there.

work out on your own. After all, there was a time when couples and families figured things out on their lonesome. And I’m sure they were successful much of the time. Maybe it’s time you built a bit more backbone and confidence and see if just maybe you, together with Chavie, can figure out how to resolve your little differences on your very own. But the fact is that you and Chavie come from polar opposite sides of the spectrum on this. For you, running for

et’s begin with the families. Chavie’s family doesn’t believe in therapy. Lots of people don’t. I’ve heard my share of So, what do you do again? You tell people what to do? They can’t figure it out on their own? I would never tell a stranger my problems! This, in and of itself, is not inherently bad. Issues can arise when there is a serious problem in an individual, couple or family’s life that persists and persists, affects the functioning and health of the person or family and the individual or family refuses help. You grew up in a family where mental health and wellness was spoken about as much as “what’s for dinner?” And unless people use therapy to create problems that aren’t there, therapy is wonderful. It is so healthy to see a mental health professional, as needed. What concerns me is the way you conveyed Chavie’s inflexibility on the matter. You wrote, “She is not budging.” Now, if I am reading too much into this, forgive me…but this strikes me. Not because Chavie is wrong per se about not wanting to go for therapy but because this is something that she knows is important to you and “she is

not budging.” I understand that when people write in, their letters often d o not capture the entire story or as they write they are feeling passionate and “it’s not really that bad” in reality. Does Chavie ask you why therapy is important to you? Is she curious about why you and your family went to therapy or what you learned or gained in therapy? Does she show you that even though it is not something she grew up doing, she understands its importance to you? Is this the only area where Chavie won’t budge, or are there other areas in the relationship where Chavie won’t budge? Are you able to validate her thoughts about therapy and find out what her concerns are about speaking with someone? Flexibility from both partners is very important in a relationship. And a shared vision is important as well. The happiest marriages that I see, both professionally and personally, are the ones where both partners want to budge and are excited to budge for each other and are working toward a shared vision. I know

it STINKS to have to deal with this now (frustration, fear of it ending, hope for a future, etc.). But the truth is that you two will either come out of the next few conversations with conviction that you are meant to be or you will realize that there is little flexibility in your different visions. If you haven’t already (and this was unclear to me), ask Chavie what will happen if a serious issue should arise down the road when you are married. Ask her how she feels about seeing a therapist then. See how she responds. Give her a lot of validation, showing her that you understand where she is coming from. Then, talk about your needs and see if she gives you the same in return. If she gives you the validation and is able to em-

pathize, there is a path forward, if you want to walk it. If she cannot offer you these vital nutrients essential to any healthy relationship, then that, in my opinion, may be a red flag. All the best, Jennifer

Unstoppable! - Jewish Women’s Mind, Body and Soul Event Taking Place despite Setbacks By Gavriel Horan

Although many people enjoyed the recent snow days, many women were disappointed that Baltimore’s first ever Jewish women’s wellness event with a twist was cancelled. The good news is that the event, “Women’s Night Out: Connecting Mind, Body & Soul,” originally set for Feb 12th, is now rescheduled for the evening of Tuesday, March 5th and will take place at Accelerator Space right off York Road (FREE valet parking!). Sponsored by Myriad Genetics, LifeBridge Health, The Jewish Community Center, Etz Chaim, J-More and many others, the three-part experiential program will feature experts in various fields focusing on physical, emotional and spiritual wellness. “This event is not only about connecting to our minds, bodies and souls, but also connecting to each other,” event coordinator, Nisa Felps, said. “We have the power as women to be a part of this world, and to help change it for the better. The weather was a minor setback but when we are united, we’re unstoppable and the event is going to be even bigger than originally planned!” The evening will begin with leaders in their respective fields leading an interactive discussion about important issues effecting women’s health. In the physical health arena, Myriad Women’s Health will offer educational resources, and a health care provider will conduct criteria-based, preventative BRCA screenings. “This is a conscious wellness event focused on being proactive about your health and enjoying life,” says Felps, 45, a two-time breast cancer survivor. “When I got involved with the BRCA gene community, I felt many events I attended were focused on when you have cancer and being sick. We’re ap-

proaching this event with a different twist of taking a positive approach and having a good time in an incredibly beautiful space that is outside the box.” One in 40 Jewish women of Ashkenazic, or Eastern European, descent test positive for the BRCA gene. While Felps does not personally have the gene, she says she knows firsthand how important it is to be proactive about one’s health and feels a responsibility to share her knowledge. “As an Orthodox woman, I felt like people in the Jewish community weren’t talking about genetic mutations associated with cancer,” she says. “Planning events like this is cathartic for me, and it makes me feel good to be able to spread the information I have learned.” LifeBridge Health and the Jewish Community Center will also partner and introduce new opportunities focused on living healthy lifestyles, with an emphasis on fit bodies and minds. Additionally, the Jewish Caring Network will promote the vital work they do in the community providing support services to the families of the chronically ill and Sharsheret will offer culturally relevant resources to support women and their families who are managing and surviving with Breast or Ovarian Cancer. Sweet & Good Catering will offer healthy organic Indian infused samples and discuss the importance of healthy food choices. A Jewish event would not be complete without some pareve savory soups, salads and some select wines to choose from as well. When it comes to emotional health, the newly opened Zoetic Wellness Center will offer introductions to their professional services and classes that provide women the opportunity to

consciously take charge of their health and well-being in order to transform their body, mind, and heart. On behalf of spiritual health, Etz Chaim, a Jewish educational center that inspires Jews of all backgrounds to grow through meaningful experiences, relationships, and education, will discuss spiritual balance in Jewish tradition. JMORE will also be on site promoting their well-balanced and all-inclusive media-based perspective on the Jewish Community. The highlight of the event will be special guest speaker Adrienne Gold, a renowned speaker for the International Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project (JWRP) who spends almost half the year leading transformational trips to Israel. A former fixture on Canadian television hosting her own daily fashion and beauty program for

over 15 years, Gold will highlight the interconnection between our minds, bodies, and souls and define ways we can nurture their balance and development. “We focus on what we eat and how we look, but we don’t spend a lot of time nourishing the parts of us that aren’t physical and tangible,” says Adrienne Gold, 60. “In Judaism, you feed your soul through acts of kindness, by creating peace and wholeness in the home, with courage, generosity, wisdom and creating unity without uniformity.” “Unity without uniformity is not dependent on agreement,” she says. “It’s the ability to stand for what you believe in without withdrawing love, affection and respect for someone who may not see the world exactly as you do.” After hearing words of wisdom from Mrs. Gold, the evening will continue with some physical expressions of our body with a certified Nia technique instructor, who will lead a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance, and healing arts. Her goal is to empower people of all shapes and sizes to connect the body, mind, emotions and spirit though dance. And then we will conclude with some dancing to the music of DJ Balagan! “As women, we often spend much of our energy giving to others and can sometimes forget about ourselves,” Etz Chaim’s Director of Women’s Education, Elana Pomeranz said. “This is one night for us to focus on tapping into our inner resources to get reenergized to keep on giving!” For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit https:// signmeup.ticketspice.com/womensnightout.

ould anyone in their right mind sit down from scratch and develop the tax withholding system we have today? The IRS publishes tables telling employers how much to take out of everyone’s paycheck, depending on their income, their filing status, and the amount they guesstimate they’ll be claiming in deductions and credits. Then, at the end of the year, employees file their actual returns and hope it’s the IRS coming out on the short end. Lots of Americans use the tax withholding system as a piggy bank. Yes, letting the IRS hold your money for a year amounts to giving them an interest-free loan. And no, they won’t do the same for you. But with savings accounts paying just a hair over 1% right now, plenty of taxpayers decide the forced discipline is worth more than the interest they give up. In 2018, the average refund amounted to $2,782, which is enough to cover some bills, take a nice weekend trip, or maybe redo your family room for big-screen TV nirvana. But one enterprising 29-year-old named Christopher Blanchett found himself in a position to snag a refund worth writing home about. And when you

hear his story, you’ll realize that sometimes these stories of ours just write themselves. Two years ago, Blanchett sat down to file his return. He had a W2 from a Sizzling Platter restaurant where he worked in Utah reporting $1,399 in income and zero withholding. And somehow, he had a W2 from a Tampa nursing home showing $17,098

that check and deposited in Sun Trust Bank. Sun Trust suspected fraud (ya think?), froze the funds, and eventually sent the money back to him. So Blanchett took that check and deposited it into a credit union, as one does, “falsely representing that the funds were from the estate of his deceased father.” And what did Blanchett actual-

in wages and a million dollars in withholding. But where you or I might have thought, “Hmmmm, something looks off,” Blanchett smelled opportunity — and chose not to look his gift horse in the mouth. So Blanchett chose to file his return with a straight face, based on those W2s. In due time, the IRS sent him a check for $980,000. He took

ly do with his new-found wealth? He bought himself a used Lexus RC 350 sport coupe. Now that’s not a car to sneeze at. The Wall Street Journal calls it “a capering boulevardier with a soundtrack of cute, kitteny growls.” You can get one with allwheel drive, heated leather seats, and Apple Carplay® integration. But really … a Lexus? That seems like

an awfully mild play for a seven figure score. (Seriously, you’d think at least part of that windfall would find its way to a Ferrari dealer.) By that time, the IRS had realized maybe there was a problem with a guy getting back 53 times his income in a refund. Last month, they seized $919,251 that was left in his bank accounts, along with the Lexus. And they’re looking to take $809.94 that Blanchett’s insurance company refunded him when he canceled the coverage on the Lexus. Prosecutors haven’t filed charges against Blanchett, at least not yet. But it’s a fair bet this story won’t end well for him. There’s no real lesson in today’s story, other than don’t be a dimwit. But there’s a great way to give yourself a nice refund, and you won’t risk the IRS showing up with a tow truck and making off with your wheels. That answer, of course, is planning. So make sure you have a plan so you’ll be ready to save, and enjoy the ride!

Depression By Rabbi Azriel Hauptman

“Postpartum depression” is a wellknown term that describes a depressive disorder that has its onset after the birth of a child. You might be surprised to learn that in the most recent edition of the DSM (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) this term was eliminated due to new evidence that shows that about half of birth-related depression begins during pregnancy. This would be inconsistent with the term postpartum since the prefix “post” means “after” which therefore implies that the onset is exclusively after a birth. Hence, the new diagnostic term is “depressive disorder with peripartum onset”. The prefix “peri” means around or near, therefore this condition reflects the tendency of depression to emerge either before or after a birth.

The symptoms of peripartum depression are similar to that of depression in general with the addition of a few symptoms that are unique to childbirth, such as difficulty bonding with the baby, feeling inadequate in taking care of the baby, and fear about harming the baby or herself. This condition should not be confused with “baby blues” which is a colloquial term referring to the very common occurrence of a relatively brief episode of depression that affects most women who give birth. The difference between baby blues and depression is in its duration and severity. The symptoms of baby blues tend to be relatively mild and typically resolve themselves within two weeks. The causes of peripartum depression are unclear. It is probably due to

a variety of factors that include hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and being overwhelmed with the care of a new baby. Women who lack social support can be at a greater risk. Surprisingly, prior births without depression do not preclude a depressive episode with a later birth. It is actually quite common for a woman to have multiple births with no symptoms of depression at all and then develop an acute case of depression with a subsequent birth. The treatment for peripartum depression is similar to regular depression, which is psychotherapy, medication, or both. Your doctor will guide you as to which medications can be taken during pregnancy or by nursing mothers. If left untreated, peripartum depression can become chronic. Even

those who are in treatment need to bear in mind that terminating treatment as soon as you start feeling better can lead to a relapse. As with mental health disorders in general, peripartum depression is nothing to be ashamed of. Most people deal with mental illness at some point during their lives. Self-stigma should not be a hurdle for seeking appropriate treatment. This is a service of Relief Resources. Relief is an organization that provides mental health referrals, education, and support to the frum community. Rabbi Yisrael Slansky is director of the Baltimore branch of Relief. He can be contacted at 410-448-8356 or at yslansky@reliefhelp.org

Councilman Says Baltimore Police Officers ‘Afraid,’ Don’t Feel Empowered To Initiate Arrests is (was?) run including the theft of our pension benefits. It should be included in any discussion of recruitment, retention, & morale,” Mancuso said. When Former Mayor Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake overhauled the city’s police and fire pension system, officers were required to increase contributions to the pension fund and had to stay on the force for 25 years instead of 20 to receive their pensions. Most who took the survey — 83 percent — were sworn officers and the rest were administrative personnel. Of the officers who responded, the majority were experienced officers. Only 8 percent had served up to five years; 19 percent had served five to 10 years; 19 percent had served 10 to 15; 21 percent had served 15 to 20 years; and 33 percent had served 20 or more years. The respondents ages were evenly distributed: 28 percent were ages 25 to 34; 32 percent were 35 to 44; 32 percent were 45 to 54; and 7 percent were 55 or older. Amid Baltimore’s persistent violence, police department failing to fill 500 patrol officer positions The survey also allowed officers to write in responses to detail their concerns and also ways they thought crime could be lowered.

One officer wrote: “Morale won’t rise until the Department and its officers receive consistent public support from the Mayor, City Council and State’s Attorney. No one is asking that corruption be tolerated. What we are asking is that when we investigate crimes and make arrests or issue citations that our elected leaders support us when we encounter resistance.” One section allowed the officers to say what they would want to tell the next police commissioner. “Invest more in the men and women who do the job. … If police officers are detailed to patrol for a period of time, have a strategy for them, and don’t just use them as a scarecrows on street corners.” Others asked for more interaction with the commissioner, including attending roll calls or taking ride-alongs with officers. Some simply asked for more officers. A detective said: “We don’t have enough people in my unit. The volume of cases we have is absurd given our manpower. It leads to mistakes, and inadequate follow up investigations which lead to sloppy prosecutions. None of which is for lack of trying.” See a sampling of the survey on next 4 pages

Schleifer, whose district overlays the Northern and Northwest police districts, said he was not surprised by the responses but hopes they will be used to address some of the department’s systemic issues. He shared the survey results with Acting Police Commissioner Michael Harrison on Thursday afternoon. Though the survey showed significant concerns among officers, Schleifer said Harrison did not seem surprised by the officers’ responses, and responded with specific ideas on how to address tactical departmental issues. “It’s refreshing. He’s seen challenges similar to ours,” Schleifer said. He said Harrison is taking action by evaluating the command staff and determining what, if any, changes need to be made, which Schleifer said any successful leader would make a priority. Attorney Ken Thompson, who heads the independent monitoring team that is helping the department implement the consent decree, said he hadn’t reviewed the survey, but the responses show the team must work on its outreach efforts. “We want to intensify our efforts to reach out to the rank-and-file,” he said. Officers should not feel that the consent decree restricts them, he said. “The consent decree gives them the tools and resources to do their job but in a constitutional way,” Thompson said. Baltimore Police commissioner says department has so few officers it’s ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’ Sgt. Mike Mancuso, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3, the union that represents the rank-andfile officers, said in a statement on Twitter Friday that he hopes city leadership takes notes of the responses. “The results are no surprise to our members & it points out the shortcomings of the City & how the BPD

Most Baltimore Police officers who participated in a recent informal survey feel restricted by the department’s federal consent decree, inadequately trained and unsupported by city leadership. Some of the officers surveyed said they don’t even feel comfortable intervening in incidents and making arrests without having been called to the scene. “They’re afraid,” said City Councilman Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer, who conducted the unscientific survey. “In this political environment, you have to justify every move you make.” About 362 of the department’s nearly 2,300 officers responded to Schleifer’s voluntary survey, which was sent at the end of 2018 via department email to police department leadership, officers and civilian members who responded anonymously. The short questionnaire asked basic biographical information, including respondents’ ages and how long they had served on the force, and questions about overall morale. The results showed 43 percent said they do not feel “comfortable making self-initiated arrests,” which Schleifer said refers to proactive calls when officers are on patrol and they witness an incident and intervene, as opposed to calls they respond to through 911. The survey also found that 74 percent said they “feel restricted by the consent decree,” while 44 percent said they don’t “fully understand the consent decree.” Only 60 percent said they feel “adequately trained” while 78 percent said they feel the department has “lowered our hiring standards.” Two of every three officers who took the survey — 68 percent — also said they do not feel city leadership supports law enforcement. Baltimore police union says there’s ‘no existing crime plan,’ patrol only responding to worst 911 calls

February 13, 2019

Dear Constituents, City Officials and Stakeholders:

Public safety is and always has been my number one priority. The Baltimore Police Department has been struggling in many areas and I have been working towards turning the department around. In a hearing several months ago, I questioned BPD command on how they plan to address various issues in the department. Top level command staff was not aware of many of the issues that had been brought to my attention and I suggested they poll the officers to uncover the deficits. After many months of inaction I decided to send out my own survey to BPD employees. The survey was sent to help the Police Department and City leadership better understand what officers and members of the department are feeling. The feedback I received is quite valuable and gives us a clear picture of what is lacking in the department and suggestions on how to improve.

B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M

We need to support our Police Officers and improve morale so that the officers can feel supported and able to help heal our wonderful city. The anonymous survey response results have already been discussed with the incoming Police Commissioner. I will hold the new Commissioner accountable and see that he follows up on the important issues brought to light.

Sincerely,

Councilman Isaac Yitzy Schleifer

Featured responses to the question:

ONE THING YOU’D TELL THE NEXT COMMISSIONER? Welcome to Baltimore City.

This dept. needs new faces in command. It has been the same recycled people and ideas since my time with the dept. Bringing in some retired command staff like the past Commissioner did was ineffective and set the dept back

He needs to connect with the rank and file officers. I believe that command truly is out of touch with the conditions and environment that their subordinates work in on a daily basis.

Take care off your officers, and don't be a politician. Get to know the little people the officer that's out there battling every day with some of the worst types of criminals. make sure u take the time to know the job of an patrol officer see what we deal with on any given day.

B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M

Show support to the Officers in the street and they will work for you. There are plenty of Officers willing to work, they're just terrified of being scrutinized and monday morning quarterbacked by their own. The community and media already hates us, but when it comes from our own people it's even worse.

Baltimore Police Department needs some help, but is the best Department around.

creamy cheesecake What You Will Need: Crust: 2 cups gluten-free cookie crumbs 5 Tbl. melted butter or margarine 4 Tbl. sugar

B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M

For questions or comments about Gluten Free Baking please email GlutenFree@BaltimoreJewishHome.com

Cake: 2 ¼ pkg. of cream cheese (8 oz. each) 4 ½ Tbl. potato starch 1 cup + 2 Tbl. sugar 1 tsp. lemon juice 1 ½ tsp. vanilla 3 cups milk 3 eggs- separated

Preparation 1. Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees. 2. Spray bottom and side of 9 inch spring-form pan. Cut parchment paper to fit into bottom. In a small bowl, mix crumbs, margarine, and sugar together and pat mixture into pan, going up the sides about 1 inch. Bake 12 minutes. Cool. 3. Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry. Set aside. Put all the other ingredients into blender and blend until smooth. If the ingredients are too much for one batch, do it in 2 batches, and transfer to large mixing bowl. By hand, add beaten whites to cheese mixture and mix until incorporated. 4. Place the entire mixture into cooled pie crust. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour. When baked, carefully run sharp knife around perimeter of cake. Cool in oven for 25 minutes with the door slightly ajar. (This prevents the cake from cracking.) When cold, top with gluten-free cherry pie filling. For a non-dairy version, substitute Tofutti cream cheese and rice milk for regular cream cheese and milk. Enjoy!
