Dear Readers, My brother-in-law’s name is Alexander. Some of my wife’s relatives are named Alexander. Many people I know are named Alexander. They carry that name because 2000 years ago, Alexander the Great was kind to the Jewish people. This doesn’t mean he was a noble person. It doesn’t mean he was on a moral level we would have wanted. It does mean that in a world which usually isn’t kind to the Jewish people, we recognize those who behave differently and say thank you. President Trump has done many positive things for the Jewish people and the State of Israel over the past few years, one of which was to fulfill the promise of all former presidents since the congressional approval in 1995 by inaugurating the new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem. Without getting into the details of its significance, let’s use this time to say thank you. Thank you for being arguably the biggest friend the Jews have had in such high office, ever. The Jewish people have a long memory, and you have entered it along with Alexander the Great and others who have helped our tiny nation along the way. We pray the insatiable #resistance movement be unsuccessful in distracting you from fulfilling the duties you were voted in for. We pray that G-d guide you in leading this nation in a just and fair way. We pray that your efforts in reaching out to our allies in the Middle East bear fruit and that we experience peace in a not so distant future. But most of all, we thank you for treating the Jewish people and country with respect and support. G-d bless President Donald Trump, and G-d bless America. Anti-Semitism In Maryland Was On The Rise In 2018, Audit Shows By: Staff Reporter BaltimoreJewishLife.com/Jeff Cohn

aryland was one of 11 states with an anti-Semitic assault reported in 2018, according to the Anti-Defamation League. The deadliest attack against the Jewish community in the history of the United States occurred in 2018. It was one of nearly 2,000 anti-Semitic incidents last year across the nation. In Maryland, there was an uptick in the number of anti-Semitic incidents reported. Cases of anti-Semitic harassment more than doubled year-overyear, and the state was among those where school and college campuses in particular experienced a number of cases. It was also the first time in four years that an anti-Semitic assault was reported in Maryland, according to the Anti-Defamation League, which said that was one of 39 such assaults reported across the country in 2018. The previous year, there were 19. The findings come from an audit published by the Anti-Defamation League on Tuesday. ‘Alarmingly High Number Of Anti-Semitic Acts’ A total of 1,879 anti-Semitic incidents were identified by the league in 2018. California, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts accounted for more than half, the report says. In Maryland, a total of 39 anti-Semitic incidents were reported in 2018.

The number reflected an increase compared with 2017, when there were 35 anti-Semitic incidents reported in Maryland. Nationally, the number of anti-Semitic incidents in 2018 decreased compared with 2017, the year the FBI said there was a 37 percent increase in anti-Jewish offenses in the U.S. However, the league’s report found that the number of incidents attributed either to known extremist groups or those inspired by extremist ideology was the highest since 2004. The Tree of Life shooting in Pittsburgh on Oct. 27, 2018, was the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history, with 11 fatalities and six injured, including four police officers. The accused shooter was said to have posted anti-Semitic messages on the website Gab, which The New York Times described as a “haven for white nationalists, neo-Nazis and other extremists.” A few weeks before the shooting, he posted an anti-Semitic message on Gab targeting the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, a Silver Spring-based nonprofit. On Saturday, which marked the six-month anniversary of the Pittsburgh shooting and the last day of Passover, a gunman opened fire at a California synagogue, killing one person and injuring three others. The accused gunman reportedly posted an online manifesto before the attack, saying he was inspired by the shootings in Pittsburgh and at the mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand. “We’ve worked hard to push back

against anti-Semitism, and succeeded in improving hate crime laws, and yet we continue to experience an alarmingly high number of anti-Semitic acts,” Anti-Defamation League CEO and National Director Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement. “We unfortunately saw this trend continue into 2019 with the tragic shooting at the Chabad synagogue in Poway. It’s clear we must remain vigilant in working to counter the threat of violent anti-Semitism and denounce it in all forms, wherever the source and regardless of the political affiliation of its proponents.” Breaking Down Maryland’s Anti-Semitic Acts In Maryland, the 39 anti-Semitic incidents included 32 cases of harassment, six vandalism reports and one assault that was anti-Semitic, according to the Anti-Defamation League. It was the first time in four years that there was an anti-Semitic assault in the state. Off campus at Towson University, two members of Alpha Epsilon Pi — a Jewish fraternity — were walking around 2 a.m. on April 29, 2018, when two other students reportedly screamed slurs at them and punched one in the face.

The incident prompted the university’s president to issue a statement committing to a “diverse and inclusive campus that supports every member to thrive, regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation or levels of ableness.” There were six instances of anti-Semitic vandalism in Maryland last year, according to the Anti-Defamation League’s report. Among the vandalism cases was graffiti at Glenelg High School in Howard County that resulted in the sentencing of four former students to multiple weekends in jail. The vandalism was described by police as racist, antisemitic and anti-LGBTQ. Howard County Public School System Superintendent Michael Martirano said he was “extremely disturbed” by the vandalism, which occurred before graduation in May 2018. “I have never seen this amount of graffiti at one school,” Martirano said at a press conference afterward. In its report, the league said that nationally, anti-Semitic physical assault and harassment cases increased compared with 2017 while vandalism cases decreased. The number of physical assaults in 2018 more than doubled compared to 2017. Maryland fell in line with that trend. While its report includes instances of online anti-Semitism, the league says: “It only scratches the surface of the broader anti-Semitic online ecosystem.”

‘Smart And Dynamic’: Olszewski Nominee Melissa Hyatt Would Be Baltimore County’s First Female Police Chief

altimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. on Tuesday named Melissa Hyatt, a veteran of the Baltimore Police Department and head of security at Johns Hopkins University and Medicine, as his choice for county police chief. Calling her “a smart and dynamic leader,” Olszewski said she was the right person to lead the department into the future. If confirmed by the County Council, Hyatt, 43, would become the county’s first female police chief. “Ms. Hyatt will be a community-oriented, forward-thinking, innovative chief,” Olszewski said. Hyatt was chosen from a pool of about 50 applicants and four finalists, officials said. A Randallstown native and daughter of a retired Baltimore police commander, Hyatt spent 20 years with the city department, rising to roles that include chief of patrol, chief of staff, and chief of the Special Operations Division. She was an incident commander during the 2015 unrest after the death of Freddie Gray from injuries suffered in police custody. While she was seen as a rising star in the city police, the department itself is a troubled agency that has endured leadership turmoil and a serious cor-

ruption scandal involving an elite gun unit. It’s operating under a federal consent decree after a Department of Justice investigation found widespread unconstitutional and discriminatory policing. Hyatt was the department’s highest-ranking woman when she was appointed in February 2018 as vice president for security at Hopkins. She led security efforts there as the institution pushed its controversial plan to create a private police force. Olszewski’s announcement came a day after the County Council confirmed Joanne Rund as the county’s first female fire chief. In announcing his choice, he appeared at a news conference with the two women, along with county administrative officer Stacy Rodgers, Gail Watts, head of the county corrections department, and Tammy Price, who leads the county 911 center. “I am thrilled that we now have an all-female public safety leadership team,” Olszewski said. Hyatt would succeed Terrence Sheridan, appointed by the late County Executive Kevin Kamenetz in 2017. Her salary will be $275,000, county spokesman T.J. Smith said. Hyatt pledged to listen to community concerns and ask for input. “Public trust is paramount to improving public safety and continuing to move the Baltimore County Police Department forward,” she said. The announcement drew quick

criticism from the Blue Guardians, an association that represents minority police officers and endorsed Democrat Olszewski in last year’s race. The group’s president, Sgt. Anthony Russell, said the county executive ignored qualified African-American candidates from within the department after seeking and receiving support from the black community during his campaign. Russell said many in the community hoped Olszewski would appoint the county’s first black chief. “Considering the fact that the county executive spent so much time campaigning on the west side … we thought that this was something he was really poised to do,” said Russell, adding that the department’s demographics do not reflect the county’s population, which is now nearly onethird African American. “When you do something like this, it sends a message.” Colonels Al Jones and Robert McCullough, both African Americans, were among those vying for the position, according to Russell and others with knowledge of the search. In response to the criticism, Olszewski told The Baltimore Sun he was fully confident that Hyatt was “the right person to lead this agency into the future.” “I’m confident that we selected the best person to honor the vision that I have for this department,” he said. timore County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 4, said that while some within the department feel strongly that an internal candidate should have been chosen, he thinks the county can benefit from outside perspective. “I trust the county executive took a number of factors into consideration in his selection,” Weston said. “We will work with the new chief. I hope she is open to our concerns about the welfare of Baltimore County police officers. By all accounts, I think she’ll have a full understanding of that.” In Baltimore County, Maryland’s third most populous county, Hyatt would lead a department of more than 1,900 officers. Like other law enforcement agencies around the nation, the county’s department has struggled to recruit new officers. Officials said earlier this year that they had seen a significant drop in applicants. In recent years, the county police have been criticized for their handling of sexual assault investigations and for shootings including that of 23-yearold Randallstown resident Korryn Gaines in 2016. A county jury awarded Gaines’ family $38 million last year, though a judge overturned the verdict in February. The county also faces a federal lawsuit alleging the mishandling of sexual assault cases. While the county saw a spike in violent crime in 2017, overall crime fell nearly 8 percent in the first half of 2018, according to the most recently available department data. Olszewski said Hyatt would join the department in mid-June. Sheridan is set to retire this summer. He also served as police chief from 1996 to 2007. Kamenetz brought him back two years ago to replace Jim Johnson. Hyatt has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Delaware and a master’s degree in management from Hopkins.

altimore Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young said he plans to update residents and employees Friday on the ransomware attack that crippled city government computers and servers on Tuesday. “But we aren’t paying them,”

Young said. “That’s definite.” According to officails, the City was struck by the Robbinhood ransomware. The FBI is investigating after authorities announced hackers were demanding about $76,000 to unlock encrypted files in city computers. Essential services like police and fire are still operational. However, Baltimore city and county residents remain unable to pay their water bills,

even by phone. A number of other departmental phone lines are also down. City employees were concerned that they would not get paid on Friday due to the attacks. Young confirmed that employees are expected to be paid on time. The same ransomware hit municipal networks in Greenville, North Carolina last month. Last year, Baltimore’s 911 system

was struck in a ransomware attack. Young spokesman Lester Davis says most residents won’t notice an impact. But the mayor said city employees who can’t work without computer systems may be asked if they’d be willing to help clean up the city if the attack takes longer than expected to fix.

Meat YIELDS 8-12 servings

Sweet and Sour Brisket

1 (3-5-lb) second cut brisket • kosher salt, to taste

• black pepper, to taste 6 cloves garlic, crushed ½ cup ketchup ½ cup chili sauce 2 Tbsp sweet chili sauce ½ cup grape jelly ½ cup light beer

Peach Salsa ½ cup fresh parsley leaves 2 ripe peaches or nectarines, diced ½ red bell pepper, finely diced 3 scallions, thinly sliced 2 avocados, finely diced 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 Tbsp white wine vinegar 1 Tbsp lime juice 1 Tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp hot sauce, such as Frank’s • kosher salt, to taste

1. Prepare the sweet and sour brisket: Preheat oven to 325°F. Prepare a 9x13-inch baking pan.

2. Rinse brisket; pat dry. Place into prepared baking pan. Season brisket with salt and pepper. Smear crushed garlic over meat.

3. Combine ketchup, chili sauces, and grape jelly; whisk until smooth. Pour over meat. Pour beer around brisket. Cover with foil. 4. Bake 2½-3 hours, or until fork tender. Transfer meat to a large dish; shred meat with 2 forks. 5. Prepare the peach salsa: Finely mince parsley leaves. In a medium bowl, toss together parsley, fruits, and vegetables. In a second bowl, whisk together olive oil, vinegar, lime juice, lemon juice, and hot sauce. Add dressing to fruit/vegetable mixture. Sprinkle with salt. Allow to sit for 30 minutes for flavors to blend. 6. Prepare the tortilla nacho chips: Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 7. In a small bowl, combine olive oil, salt, and garlic. Place 3 wraps on prepared baking sheet. Smear each wrap with olive oil mixture. Cut each tortilla into 8 wedges. (A pizza cutter works well here). 8. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven; transfer to a platter. Repeat until all wraps are baked into chips (see Note). 9. To serve, place a mound of pulled brisket onto the center of a

positive turning points in a person’s life. Certainly, they build self-esteem and expand one’s sense of what’s possible. For the seventeen girls of Bais Yaakov Middle School’s class 6C, participating in their first Dolphin Club chesed project was just such an experience. Together, they brainstormed and then implemented their idea to put on a carnival just for families and friends who are helped by the Jewish Caring Network. Along the way they learned that the Dolphin Club

is a safe place to work together, share ideas, lead, compromise, pitch in, and of course, have a lot of fun! The girls’ plan was to provide a greatly needed break to JCN families dealing with the stress of health-related issues. They decided to organize a colorful indoor carnival that would be completely free from start to finish and would feature all kinds of games, prizes, and fun attractions like face painting, putt-putt, a moonbounce obstacle course, and kid-pleasing food like ice cream sundaes and popcorn. Almost every aspect of the carnival was planned and implemented by the girls themselves under the supervision of Dolphin Club Director, Mrs. Leeba Braun. To pay for the carnival prizes, supplies and food, the class organized a successful knish bake sale that raised hundreds of dollars. At the same time, a second project was planned—a game drive to ask people to donate new and used games and toys that the girls would personally deliver to the Tikva House, special housing available through the JCN for families with loved ones being treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Finally, the big day— Sunday, March 31st — arrived, and the carnival, with its many moving parts and details, went off without a hitch. The Dolphin Club girls saw all their hard work pay off in a deeply satisfying way as they watched boys and girls excitedly scramble from table to table to sample the fun. Over two hundred children and adults attended the carnival. In a thank you letter to the Dolphin Club, one of the parents wrote, “I am extremely impressed with the maturity and midos of the girls in the club. You

all went out of your way to help my children enjoy themselves and succeed. Especially the kind girl who happily took my daughter to the restroom.” Echoing the sentiment of all the girls in her class, one Dolphin Club participant said, “I had a great time and I love helping people feel good.” The Jewish Caring Network’s hakaros hatov to the girls was overflowing: “The Dolphin Club Carnival was BEYOND AMAZING and the families had a BLAST!”. “The girls felt very proud that the project was such a success,” said Mrs. Leeba Braun, Dolphin Club Director. “The carnival was very well organized and the entire class worked together with a beautiful achdus. For many, the event exceeded their expectations,” she remarked. “This was the first time we did a carnival that was completely free to all participants. Because of that, the girls could focus purely on helping others, which gave them a great feeling and a tremendous sense of purpose,” she said. Rabbi Naftali Hexter, Principal of Bais Yaakov Middle School, is a consistent and unabashed supporter of the Dolphin Club. “After going through the whole process of seeing this project from start to finish, Mrs. Braun’s sixth grade Dolphins are made to feel like a million dollars seeing their hard work pay off in the smiles and joy of the JCN families who participated,” he said. “Through Dolphin Club events such as this one, our young leaders become sensitive and responsive to the needs of the Jewish community,” he noted. About a week after the carnival, the girls went to Tikva House to deliver the donated games and to get a personal tour of the house of hope by JCN’s director and co-founder, Stacy Goldenberg. The Dolphin Club game drive collected over 35 games, enough to keep a house full of visiting family members well entertained during their stay. As they have shown again and again, Dolphin Club doers and future leaders are experts at turning great ideas into successful, win/win chesed campaigns. We can expect more creative, thoughtful projects in the future to benefit both our community and the lucky girls who participate in the next Dolphin Club program.

ear Friends, Today we remember the 23,741 soldiers who have fallen establishing and defending the State of Israel. We all have heroes. Our personal definition of a hero often changes as we go through life. But what is a hero? A hero is willing to put the needs of the other before his own. A hero is selfless. A hero is committed to a vision, a dream, an ideal, so intensely that he would lay his life down for it. Today we remember thousands of heroes. Men and women who have given their lives for Am Yisroel and Eretz Yisroel. Some were religious, some were not; some were learned, some were not; but all were heroic. There were soldiers who served in

fulfillment of a spiritual and religious mandate, others served because of a secular Zionist ideology, and others served because they were drafted. They all served with honor and courage and paid the highest price for our nation. These precious soldiers gave up their dreams, their aspirations and their lives for their people and their land. How privileged we are to be part of a nation of heroes. Let us take a few moments today to daven for their neshamos and their families. Let us try to feel the broken hearts and the silent sobs of bereaved parents, children and spouses. Let us utter a word of gratitude for their sacrifice and a tefilah for their aliyah. And yet, in Israel, the celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut has already begun. Because through the sadness and loss, the great State of Israel was born. “V’amar lach b’damayich chayi (and

I say to you, through your blood we live).” The sacrifice was not in vein. The sacrifice has created the fertile soil to rebuild our homeland. Yeshivos, agriculture, chessed, technology, a Jewish army; a society the likes of

which we have not experienced for the last 2,000 years; and it is here, it is now. We must give thanks to God for providing us with such a gift. We must utter a prayer of gratitude for the privilege of having a homeland for us and governed by us. We must thank Hashem for honoring the promise He made to Avraham. We have must thank God, for allowing us to come home. And even though many of us still live on the other side of the ocean, nothing warms the heart and inspires the soul like knowing that the arms of our homeland are open to us, inviting us to return. t his official swearing-in Thursday, Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young urged Baltimore residents to “remain tough” and pursue the “unique opportunity to right this ship.” “I don’t know nobody else who is more resilient than Baltimore,” Young said. “The people of Baltimore, just like our city, [are] made tough.” This ceremony at the War Memorial Building came just a week after former Mayor Catherine Pugh resigned amid investigations into her “Healthy Holly” book deals. Young, who had been acting mayor since Pugh went on a medical leave of absence last month, officially became mayor at that time and will serve out her term. In many statements, Young has said he is not looking to run for mayor following this term and intends to run for election next year to his old post as council president. Besides guiding the city out from under the scandals that plagued Pugh’s final weeks in office, Young is also

confronted with a homicide rate that has remained high since 2015. “We’re fed up, we’re tired!” Young said. “Ninety-nine percent [of Baltimoreans] are law abiding, and it’s 1% that are holding us hostage, and we will not let that happen.” Young recognized predecessors including Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Sheila Dixon and Martin O’Malley. Rawlings-Blake and Dixon were present for the address. Young teared up when recognizing his council colleagues. Speakers at Thursday’s event included Gov. Larry Hogan, Speaker Adrienne Jones and former NAACP president and U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume. “The fight for Baltimore’s future is a fight worth fighting,” Hogan said.

Why is this such a historic moment for Baltimore? Our community has long existed in the shadows, as a minority demographic that wasn’t paid much attention on the city or state level. But as anyone currently house-hunting knows, recently we have started to come into our own. Our families are growing, we exercise our voting rights, and the young professionals we are producing seek careers in lots of diverse fields that haven’t been popular destinations for frum Jews here. Along with that comes the ability to advocate for ourselves and gain public representation, as Yitzy and Dalya have worked hard to do. Right now the Baltimore Police Department is making great strides in protecting our community and accommodating all citizens who want to join the force. We need to do our part in supporting the officials that help pave paths for us to succeed. So I think we should take advantage of this transition, and this is one big way to do it. Many people know you in different ways. Who is the real Kalman Finkelstein? I try to be the same Kalman wherever I go. For better or worse I was born and raised right here on Simmons Ave, and am a proud TA graduate. My wife Gina and I have 5 wonderful children. We’re thankful to have my brothers, sister and parents nearby as well as my grandfather Irvin Spivack, still going strong at 95, representing 5 generations of Finkelsteins right here in Bal’more. Together with my partners I run Pricebusters Furniture, a chain of 9 discount furniture stores across Maryland. Someone had the bright idea to put me on the State Central Committee where I try my best to help our city.

What is the award, exactly? The dinner is themed “Roots & Branches” and is going to highlight the various ways that ordinary guys can make a difference in our city. Ohr Hachaim has been an invaluable part of the Finkelstein family tree so we feel that it’s kind of fitting. They’re calling it the Community Advocacy award, but I would have preferred MVP or at least Rookie of the Year. I’ve been fortunate to be involved with Yitzy, Dalya and the Baltimore PD to try to make our city a better place, and my brothers Aron and Nick are amazing role models for the quiet, wide-ranging community work they do.

hese profound words by Dovid Hamelech capture the essence of this year’s Bais Haknesses Ohr Hachaim Annual Dinner: An Evening of Roots and Branches. On Sunday, June 2nd 2019, we will be celebrating those who planted the roots of success and aid us all in branching out with extraordinary advancements in the community. We hope that you’ll join us as we reflect on these strong trees of our community who have helped develop the Shul into the critical family center is it today, and discover the new paths forward they pioneered for greater Baltimore Jewry. Among such esteemed honorees are Rabbi Menachem and Chaya Braun, roots who have made Ohr HaChaim (Rabbi Weiss’ Shul) the anchor and home base it is for so many in the area. With almost a decade of service as the Shul’s gabbai and general COO, Rabbi Braun single-handedly ensured Ohr Hachaim’s successful operation and sustained growth, investing his time and energy to maintain the smooth flow of the Shul. Whether it be through the friendly smile, a Yiddishe joke, or his sweet voice as baal tefillah, Menachem’s presence adds a unique warmth and flavor to our davening and uplifts the entire kehillah. But even more than that, we are privileged to recognize the Brauns for shaping the culture of the Shul and molding its vibe to satisfy businessmen, yugerleit, and everyone in between. Their invaluable kiruv work for Project Xtreme and expert kashrus services are branches into disparate segments of our world that the Brauns seamlessly weave together, and everyone in the Shul has gained from the atmosphere they’ve worked tirelessly to forge. Fittingly, they will be presented with the Ohr Hachaim award in thanks for all they’ve done. Another strong set of roots that has embedded itself within the Shul and larger community is the extensive and multi-generational Finkelstein family: Aron and Elisheva, Kalman and Gina, and Nechemya (Nick) and Dena. These three

brothers and their families exemplify the strength and righteousness that comes from deep family and religious roots, and the vast opportunities available to those with the drive to brave uncharted waters. From their parents to their grandchildren, it Is hard at times to grasp the breadth of the Finkelsteins’ contributions. Though all three brothers partook in founding the shul on a communal level, Nick as a founding board member was among the small group of families that personally guaranteed the Shul’s first mortgage, leveraging their own homes to do so. Along with Aron and Kalman, their early sacrifice allowed for what we have today to become a reality. Together, Nick and Kalman manage several Price Busters Discount Furniture stores, particularly catering to and engaging with disadvantaged Baltimoreans in areas to where others are hesitant to venture. In addition to Kalman’s own determined efforts to build bridges with the Baltimore Police Department and service as a member of the State Central Committee, the instrumental roles he played in the successful election campaigns of Dalya Attar and Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer has resulted in Orthodox Jewry in Baltimore being publicly represented as never before. He provides our Shul with an energy that only Kalman can, and a model for taking action on behalf of others. Aron’s utilizes his talents and expertise in immigration law to help so many overcome obstacles to join our community and contribute to the flourishing Jewish melting pot unique to Baltimore. And thanks to Aron’s unconditional love for the children of our Shul and singular vision, the Youth Program he established inspires the children of our kehillah every Shabbos. These branching achievements benefit us all by furthering the progress of the Baltimore community, and for that we look forward to recognizing them with a Community Advocacy award. Finally, as the Baltimore Orthodox Jewish community grows in prominence and involvement with our city, it is imperative that we are given unfettered access to civic, government and economic oppor-

nities so we can spread our branches to help the City through our many talents and resources. With this in mind we are honored to be presenting, for the first time, the prestigious Captain Hyman P. Galbut Jewish Civil Rights Award to the Baltimore Police Department and our newly appointed Police Commissioner Michael Harrison, in grateful recognition of the friendship they have displayed toward the Orthodox community and recent efforts to pave a path for Shomer Shabbos citizens to join the force. An American police officer with nearly two and a half decades of service under his belt, Harrison’s impressive resume only reaffirms the notion that he is here to protect and serve the people – all types of people. Despite his short reign as Baltimore Police Commissioner, he has already begun making overtures between the secular and Jewish communities, combatting numerous obstacles to fight for the religious needs of the people. It is only because of Harrison’s persistence and the example he sets for his staff that there is unprecedented amity among the two segments and a potential for a bright future, with rising opportunity for Jewish police figures. The Baltimore Jewish community would not be where it is today without people like the Brauns, Finkelsteins, and Police Commissioner Harrison, and their vision challenges us to follow in their footsteps. Ohr Hachaim is fortunate to have been planted by giants, allowing for unbelievable growth and change. And now, with exhilarating plans to renovate the Shul and a widespread embracing of civic opportunity, there is room for others to become a part of something remarkable. The United States military hosted a team of Israeli cameramen in a combat photography competition last week, in which the army photographers tested their mettle in obstacle courses, marches, and target practice. This was the seventh annual Department of Defense Hilda I. Clayton Best COMCAM (combat camera) Competition, created in honor of a U.S. Army photographer who was killed when a mortar shell prematurely exploded during a training exercise in Afghanistan. It was the first time that a foreign military took part in the competition – the IDF was the only one. The five-day competition was held at the U.S. Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia. It was hosted by the U.S. Army’s 55th Signal Company. The contest began last Monday with physical training, a written exam, and a challenge to create an audiovisual package on a specific topic. The following day consisted of an obstacle course and “stress shoot,” in which the soldiers had their heart rates elevated before target practice to better replicate shooting in real-world scenarios. The third day included a simulated urban combat mission, which included the evacuation of an injured soldier. On the final day, the participants took part in a 12-mile march carrying a 35-pound rucksack. Throughout every part of the competition, the soldiers took photographs and shot video, and at the end of the day, selected five of those pictures and edited the footage into four-minute clips. “It tested you mentally, physically and technically,” said Staff Sgt. Ed-

ward French IV, a drill sergeant in the U.S. military. Last Friday night, a group of retired combat photographers reviewed the final videos. The scores were then tallied, and winners were announced. French and his teammate Staff Sgt. Enoch Fleites came in first, followed by a team from the 55th Signal Company. The IDF team — Staff Sgt. Yoav Pinus and Sgt. Nir Bitan — tied for third place with a team from the 55th Signal Company. The IDF Spokesperson’s combat photography program has gone through a number of changes over the years. Military photographers received relatively little combat training, until 2003 when Sgt. Lior Ziv was killed on an assignment in the Gaza Strip. Following Ziv’s death, the IDF determined that photographers who would be embedded with troops during operations had to go through combat boot camp. During the competition, which took place over Israel’s Memorial Day and Independence Day, the Israeli soldiers held a memorial service in Ziv’s honor, airing a short film about him. In 2014, the IDF expanded its combat photography program, having the cameramen go through even more intense training — as part of the Golani Infantry Brigade — before deploying them to every IDF command. This was enlarged further in the past five years, with an IDF Spokesperson’s Unit photographer embedded in nearly every infantry battalion, though now they undergo basic training with combat intelligence soldiers instead of Golani.

The Week In News Jewish National Fund announced that more than $14 million that was bequeathed to the Jewish state by Nicolas Bauman in 2009 finally arrived in the Holy Land. Bauman, a French Jewish widower, passed away in 2009 without any children. The benefactor wrote in his will that the $14.55 million should be used to set up a fund for bereaved families of fallen soldiers and victims of terror. Following a lengthy bureaucratic process, the money arrived in Israel last week and will be distributed via a fund managed by a Justice Ministry official and Keren Kayemet L’Israel-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF). KKL-JNF representatives and the Justice Ministry’s Sigal Yaakobi decided at a recent meeting that the fund, to operate over the next ten years, will begin by dedicating resources to support bereaved siblings. “Bereaved brothers and sisters are part of the bereaved families, but their standing and rights have not been completely settled, and they do not receive full support from the official commemorative bodies in the State of Israel,”

Weissman, along with the 15 other finalists, defeated another 74 contestants in the earlier rounds who came from over 30 countries, from Latin America to Europe and from Canada and the U.S. to Australia. “The State of Israel has experienced the most prosperous and successful era it has known, but during these very days, one of the greatest disasters in the history of the Jewish people is taking place – we are losing millions of our Jewish brothers and sisters in the Diaspora,” Bennett said at the event. “Like an iceberg melting away, so many of our people are slipping away before our eyes,” he continued, adding, “the State of Israel must act, without delay, with all our

Germany Will Stand by Israel at UN

Germany will always work, including in the UN, to ensure that Israel’s right to exist is never called into question.” Berlin is “most concerned about the fact that, to this day, Israel continues to be criticized inappropriately, treated in a biased manner and marginalized in the bodies of the UN,” the statement went on. The country, which currently is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, pledged “to oppose any unfair treatment of Israel in the UN and to support its legitimate interests. Trees Not Rockets

On Saturday, Germany said that it will oppose “any unfair treatment” of Israel at the United Nations, adding that it was deeply troubled by the anti-Israel bias prevalent at the international body. The statement, issued on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Israel’s accession to the UN, was welcomed by Jerusalem’s envoy to Germany, Jeremy Issacharoff, who said he hoped it signals a change in Berlin’s voting pattern vis-a-vis the Middle East. Germany’s voting record on Middle East issues has been criticized by Israel and its supporters, as the country often joins other European nations in voting against Israel’s interest at the UN. “Seventy years ago today – 24 years before the Federal Republic of Germany’s admission to the United Nations – Israel was admitted to the UN as a full member. The Federal Government would like to take this 70th anniversary as an opportunity to reiterate the fact that Germany stands at Israel’s side in the UN, too,” the English-language statement by Germany’s Foreign Office said.

In a bid to show their strength in the face of rocket attacks, Mietarim, a pre-military academy located at in the southern kibbutz of Nahal Oz, has started an initiative to fill craters left by rockets with trees, TPS reported on Monday. A lemon tree was the first to be planted in a crater in this program. Noa Yanai, a student at the academy, said that planting these trees at the place where rockets fell gives her and her fellow students a sense of permanence in the area. “In a place where the rocket fell, evil is created,” she explained. “We are conveying a message that something good is growing within this evil.” The initiative comes following rocket attacks earlier this month, which saw some 690 rockets shot into southern Israel from the Gaza enclave. Four Israelis were killed and 234 injured during the recent flareup.

According to Iran’s foreign ministry, the State of Israel is a major cause of the crises in the Middle East. It also suggested that a referendum be held among all of the inhabitants of what it called “historic Palestinian territory” to decide its political future as part of measures by the international community to end the “crimes of the Zionist regime.” The statement was issued ahead of Nakba Day, when Palestinians commemorate the “catastrophe” that befell them with Israel’s creation in 1948. “On May 14, 1948 territories witnessed one of the most painful events in the history of Islam and the world, since then, the people of this land have not seen peace and comfort,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry statement said. “On Nakba Day, an illegitimate entity called the Zionist regime, backed by the U.S. was born and occupied Palestinian territory,” the statement continued. “It has continued with war, crime and occupation, and today has become a major factor behind the reason of all regional crises and real threats to international peace and security.” Iran called on the international community, “and in particular the United Nations, to end the systematic occupation of Palestine” and bring about the creation of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. Iran is one the main backers of terror groups in the Middle East, and in particular Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, both of which are sworn to Israel’s destruction. Tensions between the U.S. and Iran increased last week after Washington announced it was moving an aircraft carrier group and strategic bombers to the region in response to an unspecified Iranian threat.

The Week In News publicly criticized the Bush administration for invading Iraq. “My career in the CIA was cut short by partisan politics, but I’m not done serving our country,” Plame said in a statement formally announcing her candidacy as a Democrat for New Mexico’s 3rd congressional district last week. “We need more people in Congress with the courage to stand up for what’s right. It’s why I couldn’t be prouder than to have the chance to represent my friends and neighbors of Northern New Mexico. I will work as hard defending my fellow New Mexicans in Washington as I did defending our country from nuclear threats.” The seat Plame is running for is being vacated by Democratic Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, who is running for the U.S. Senate. Topping the list of concerns that Plame would like to address is healthcare. On her campaign website, she elaborates on the other significant issues she plans to tackle to make a “brighter future for New Mexicans”: protecting clean air and water, equal voting rights, gun control, public education, strengthening the economy, and reducing poverty and homelessness. In 2003, Ambassador Joe Wilson, Plame’s husband at the time, wrote an op-ed in The New York Times. “I have little choice but to conclude that some of the intelligence related to Iraq’s nuclear weapons program was twisted to exaggerate the Iraqi threat,” he wrote after he was sent to Niger by CIA officials on a mission to investigate the country’s sale of uranium to Iraq. Eight days after Wilson published his op-ed, columnist Robert Novak identified Plame as an “agency operative on weapons of mass destruction” and cited two senior administration officials in his piece “Mission to Niger.” The revelation culminated in the conviction of Lewis “Scooter” Libby, former Vice President Dick Cheney’s former chief of staff. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison in 2007 for lying to the FBI and obstructing justice in the investigation into the leak of Plame’s identity. Libby’s sentence was commuted by Bush and he was pardoned by President Donald Trump in April of last year. Plame, who relocated to New Mexico after leaving the CIA in 2005,

moved to Santa Fe the day after Libby was convicted for his role in outing her.

5 Killed in Float Plane Crash

Five people were killed after two float planes collided in flight on Monday afternoon near Ketchikan, Alaska. A float plane is an aircraft with pontoons or floats that allow it to land on water. The crash took place around 1 p.m. One float plane, operated by Taquan Air, was returning from a tour of Alaska’s Misty Fjords and was carrying 10 passengers and a pilot. The passengers had been on a cruise, and the float plane was a shore excursion that they booked through Princess Cruises. The other plane was carrying four passengers from Royal Princess on a separate tour. Those four passengers and their pilot were killed. “We are deeply saddened to report this news and our thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their lives and the families of those impacted by today’s accident. Princess Cruises is extending its full support to traveling companions of the guests involved,” the company said.

Who is Patrick Shanahan? On Thursday, the White House said that President Donald Trump will be nominating Patrick Shanahan to be defense secretary. Shanahan has been acting defense secretary for the past several months following the departure of Defense Secretary James Mattis late last year. Before he was named acting defense secretary, Shanahan, a longtime Boeing executive, served as deputy defense secretary.

Shanahan “has proven over the last several months that he is beyond qualified to lead the Department of Defense, and he will continue to do an excellent job,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement last week. The announcement comes at a challenging time, when the Trump administration has been grappling with potential confrontations with Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela. It marks a pointed reversal from an era when the president relied primarily on generals to craft military and foreign policy. Before his position in government, Shanahan was vice president and general manager of the Boeing 757 program, and he also worked on the 737, 747, 767, 777, and 787 commercial airline programs. He was then vice president and general manager for Boeing Rotorcraft Systems in Philadelphia, where he responsible for all U.S. Army Aviation programs and site activities in Philadelphia and Mesa, Arizona.

Trump nominated Shanahan to become deputy defense secretary in March 2017, so that he could assist with the president’s planned expansion of the military. Former Sen. John McCain threatened to block his nomination during confirmation hearings in June 2017, charging that Shanahan had ducked questions on whether he believed the U.S. should supply Ukraine with weapons to combat Russian aggression. Shanahan said he would have to look at the issue. Shanahan was confirmed despite McCain’s reservations by a vote of 92-7 in July. Shanahan said in a statement that he was honored by Trump’s announcement. “If confirmed by the Senate, I will continue the aggressive implementation of our National Defense Strategy,” he said. “I remain committed to modernizing the force so our remark-

able Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines have everything they need to keep our military lethal and our country safe.” Shanahan said the president informed him on Thursday afternoon at the White House that he would be nominated. “I called my mom,” Shanahan told reporters outside the Pentagon after the announcement. “She was super happy.” Asked about the biggest challenge of the job, he said, “Balancing it all.” “For me, it’s about practicing selective neglect so that we can stay focused on the future but not ignore the emerging, really important issues that pop up day-to-day that you don’t plan for,” he said. Shanahan would oversee the armed forces as the military is seeking to wind down counterinsurgency wars and is preparing for intensified competition with China and Russia. Not long after taking over as acting secretary in early January, Shanahan rolled out the 2020 defense budget, which seeks to reorient the military toward competition with Russia or China. But the budget proposal immediately faced blowback on Capitol Hill when Shanahan agreed with Trump’s decision to take as much as $6.1 billion from the Pentagon budget this year for a wall on the southern border and “backfill” the money in the 2020 budget request. Lawmakers also balked at the administration’s inflation of the Pentagon’s war-fighting account in a bid to fund defense over domestic matters. Since he took over on January 1, Shanahan has sought to continue the approach Mattis staked out, regularly voicing support for the U.S. partnership with NATO and other allies. But he appears less inclined than his predecessor to challenge the president on significant strategic military policy moves.

Radio Sputnik is part of Rossíya Segódnya, the government news agency created in 2013 by Russian President Vladimir Putin. In June 2018, the Justice Department ordered WZHF’s owner, RM Broadcasting of Jupiter, Florida, to register as a foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, a 1938 anti-propaganda law. RM filed a counterclaim, arguing that it simply buys and sells air time, without regard to or even knowledge of that content. Moreover, according to court documents, RM’s contract with Rossíya Segódnya specifically declares that neither party is an “agent for the other.” Judge Rosenberg noted that under the contract, RM is required to perform services for Rossíya Segódnya in exchange for payment, which she said makes the company an agent of

the Russian broadcaster under the law. Simply saying you’re not an agent doesn’t mean you’re not, in fact, an agent, she added. “Our concern is not the content of the speech but providing transparency about the true identity of the speaker,” Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers said. In a report in January 2017, U.S. intelligence agencies called RM’s sister TV station, RT America, “Russia’s state-run propaganda machine,” accusing it of having taken part in Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential campaign. In November 2017, the United States listed RT America as a foreign agent even though “similar” services like Britain’s BBC, China’s CCTV and Germany’s Deutsche Welle Radio USA haven’t been listed. Pilot Riot Overall, U.S. airports ranked poorly on the global list with the highest-ranking American field going to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, which scored the 34th spot. Henrik Zillmer, AirHelp’s chief executive, told Bloomberg that the major reason why American airports scored low was due to weather-related delays and poor quality of service. Long security lines were frequent problems, as well, causing a slew of customer complaints. AirHelp rated airports on three key factors: on-time performance, service quality, and food and shopping options. The group surveyed more than 40,000 passengers in 40 countries last year on their personal experiences. This is the ninth year compiling the report. According to the report, the best airport in the world is Hamad International Airport in Qatar. Heading to Kamakura, Japan? Better sit down while you munch on your kosher cookies. The city has issued an ordinance banning eating while walking. Kamakura is a tourist destination known for its temples and beaches. Even more than that, its street food is very popular as well. But authorities had noticed that when people eat the food they purchased on the street, the packaging and its detritus ends up on the floor, fodder for cats and vermin. Because Komachi-dori is such a busy street in Kamakura, rife with street food outlets, the littering has gotten out of control. According to Japan Today, 50,000 to 60,000 people throng the street each day, and with the hordes of tourists, it’s almost impossible to eat neatly while standing up. In Japan, food is considered sacred and other activities should not be done while eating. In other words, people should eat while sitting, without distractions. Hence, the ban by local officials in Kamakura who are trying to keep the area clean and pleasant for all who visit.

This is not a scene from a movie, although it could be. Passengers waiting for a PSA Airlines flight to take off from Louisville International Airport were surprised when their flight was delayed. The reason? Their pilot had been arrested at the airport. He is being accused of killing three people back in 2015. Christian Richard Martin, 51, was arrested right before the flight. He had been in the Army Reserve, Army National Guard, and on active duty in the military for over 30 years. But then, he was kicked out and dismissed from service after he was found guilty of two counts of mishandling classified information and of assault on a child under the age of 16, military records show. Since then, it seems, he did not continue on the straight path. Passengers were surprised to hear that their pilot was arrested and were even more startled to learn why he was taken into custody. “It’s scary to think this happened so long ago,” passenger Ashley Martin said, “and they’re just now getting around to catching the guy.” Seems like truth is a lot stranger than fiction.

They were supposed to be the wave of the future. Australia recently came up with a new $50 bill with added security features. Among the anti-counterfeiting measures on the bill which entered general circulation in October is a swan that appears to fly and a holographic 50 that reverses when the note is moved. Around 400 million of these bills were printed – 46 million of them are in circulation. But one eagle-eyed citizen has noticed that there is something quite not right with the new currency: the word “responsibility” is missing an “i.” The mistake – which would be hard to spot with the naked eye – is in microprint beside Edith Cowan, the first female member of an Australian parliament. The microprint next to her features excerpts from her maiden speech to the Western Australia state Parliament. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) said it became aware of the issue last December and added that the spelling would be corrected for the next print run around the middle of this year. The erroneous bills in circulation amount to $2.3AUD billion (that’s $1.6 billion in U.S. dollars). A spokesman for RBA assured the public that despite the misspelling the bills are legal tender. “It does not affect their validity and functionality in any way,” she said. New, updated versions of the $5 and $10 bills have already been released. The RBA will be releasing an upgraded $20 note later this year. Hope they have a dictionary onhand before they go to print.

“I actually walked right past it but my daughter pretty much kicked it as she was walking,” the father said. “She then goes, ‘Dad, is this gold?’ I said, ‘I think it might be.’” They tried to weigh the huge rock at a nearby supermarket. Turns out, the nugget weighs 20 ounces, or 1.25 pounds, and could be valued at a whopping $24,000. “To sell it as a nugget whole, it’s probably worth a little bit more than that,” dad said. “We’ve come on some tough times so it’s really good because we’ve been struggling financially. It couldn’t be better timing really.” The family’s “Lucky” find was only the latest time an Australian has been revealed to have discovered a gold nugget. In September, a retired man found a roughly seven-pound gold nugget worth an estimated $80,000 in the northern Goldfields of Western Australia. He had been searching the area with a metal detector for years. It took him two hours to dig the nugget out of the ground. Australia sounds like a good place to find a fortune.

When King David seeking to express before God his profound despair and frustration in the face of all those who betrayed his friendship, he describes it ‫כאבל אם קדר שחותי (תהלים‬ )‫לה יד‬, like one who mourns for his mother, I am bent over in gloom. The Radak points out that King David chose the metaphor of grief over the loss of a mother rather than over a father, “because one is in greater pain over the death of the mother that he was formed from in her womb, who nursed and nurtured him through childhood until his becoming an adult and even afterward continued to provide for his physical and emotional needs.” This is the proverbial “Yiddishe Mamma”, as conveyed in that soulfully mourning old yiddish song:

The Radak categorizes the three aspects of a Yiddishe Mamma’s role: She forms from her very essence and self a child within her womb, fondly tending to her baby’s needs after birth and maintaining a loving involvement throughout her child’s entire life. In this week’s portion the Torah attests, in reverse order, to the vital and critical role a mother plays in our lives. A Kohen who suffers a loss of those relatives closest to him, must participate in the funeral even though a Kohen is otherwise prohibited from contact with the dead. ‫כי אם לשארו הקרב אליו לאמו ולאע‬ )‫ יטמא (ויקרא כא ב‬...‫ביו‬, Except for the relative closest to him (his wife), to

A Kohen who has devoted his life as a “proxy” for God and his fellow man, serving both in his capacity as a priest in the Temple, must nevertheless give deserving honor to his beloved ones. The Torah starts by enumerating the one “closest” to him, his wife, one whom the Torah describes that closeness of relationship as ‫בשר אחד (בראע‬ )‫שית ב כד‬, one flesh, an integrated unit of one. In a departure from the norm, it then speaks of the death of a mother first, to accentuate the next “closest” relationship that to his mother, whom he is indeed closer to than a father, as the Radak revealed. This depiction of the Kohen mourning over his mother reflects on the culmination of a life of loving devotion, admiration, support and warmth he received from his mother, that he now comes to grieve and pay respect to. Later on the Torah affirms the instinct within the nature of all animate life for a mother to foster and care for its young. ‫שור או כשב ועז כי יולד והיה שבעת‬ ‫ימים תחת אמו וביום השמיני והלאה ירצה‬ )‫ (ויקרא כב כז‬...‫לקרבן‬, When an ox or a sheep or a goat is born, it shall remain under its mother for seven days; and from the eighth day on, it is acceptable for an offering... An animal must be allowed to bond with its child for seven days before the offspring can be offered on the Altar. The Midrash informs us that the Torah seeks to affirm that instinctive connection by requiring of us to refrain from denying that impulse, thereby demonstrating an adherence to the principle of ‫ורחמיו על כל מעשיו‬ )‫(תהלים קמה ט‬, and His mercies are on all his works, training ourselves to be sensitive in our feeling towards all creatures. It is for this reason too, the Midrash continues, that a child remains in its mother’s embrace developing for an additional seven days prior to being fit for his Bris Milah on the eighth day. )‫(פסיקתא רבתי הוספה א פרשה א‬

This reflects on the second aspect of a mother’s significance in the early formative years of a child. Finally, the Torah describes the nameless blasphemer at the end of our portion only through the identity of his mother. ‫ושם אמו שלמית בת דברי (ויקרא כד‬ )‫יב‬, and the name of his mother was Shelomis the daughter of Divri. Rashi tells us that his flawed character was attributed to his mother being a ‫דברנית‬, a chatterer, indicated in her name ‫בת דברי‬, rooted in the word ‫דיבור‬, speech. He too, spoke unwisely, blaspheming God in the process. The Torah reveals for us the spiritual DNA a child inherits from the one in who’s womb he was formed. This then is the first component of a woman’s role in the development of a child the Radak discussed. The great Amora, Rava upon hearing a brilliant insight that the saintly Tanna, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai had presented, exclaimed, ‫"דילידא אימיה‬ "‫כרבי שמעון תיליד‬, which Rashi explains to mean, “every mother should pray to give birth to a child alike Rabbi Shimon.” What was this cryptic wish that we find solely by the likes of Rabbi Shimon? Certainly, there were many other holy sages we would wish our children be like. The Talmud reports a discussion that took place between Rabbi Shimon and his students. The students queried, “Why is circumcision on the eighth day, (and not immediately when the child is born)?” Rabbi Shimon responded, “It would not be proper that all are happy celebrating and the parents are sad (because after the birth of a son they are yet forbidden to each other for seven days, first becoming permitted to return to family life on the eighth day).”):‫(נדה לא‬ It seems so strange that the Holy Tanna would suggest such a base reason for a Bris to be celebrated on the eighth day lest their joy be impaired by their physical separation.

Since the sin of Adam the process of death, pain and impurity entered the world. Prior to this sin man and woman would procreate each day free from selfish temptation and lust. There would be no barriers of defilement that would ever separate them. ‫(ספורנו‬ )‫ועוד בראשית ג טז‬ The distance that began with man’s first act of ingratitude to God for the ‫טוב‬, the epitome of good, that God granted man by presenting him a wife, when Adam pointed an accusatory finger towards her, blaming her for having instigated the sin, is what we are challenged with in overcoming until such time as the Moshiach will come. Initially, man, his wife, and child were one seamless unit, with no animosity or division between them. Subsequent to the curse man would now “rule” over her and be distracted with the need to exert much effort to

provide. She would be challenged by the pain of physical deterioration and impurity as well with much pain in the process of birth and raising children, that will create additional tension between them. Rabbeinu Bachya )‫ (ויקרא יב ז‬states that the sin-offering a woman who gives birth must bring is for the sin of the ‫אם כל חי‬, the mother of all living, Chava, who initiated the sin that had as its consequences the challenge of holding together the family unit and not allowing it to “come apart” at its seams. Rabbi Shimon was educating his students that it wasn’t the need for physical affection that stifled the joy of a couple at their son’s Bris. It was the deeper consciousness that in our striving to achieve that unity of purpose, we face the struggle of overcoming the desire for pleasure and selfish indulgence that prevents us from creating an integrated wholesome entity. That reality, the obstacles we face in

the family relationship, is what distorts our ability to meld into one, is what prevents an unadulterated celebration. The role of a mother is termed in Sifrei Chassidus as the attribute of ‫מלע‬ ‫כות‬, Kingdom, also referred to as ‫אמא‬ ‫תתאה‬, the lower mother. In its simplest sense, it is the point through where the Divine Presence encounters and infuses the lower worlds with sanctity. The “King” is one whose task is to serve his people reflecting G-d with absolute selflessness. It has been compared to a highly polished mirror that reflects exactly that which appears before it. The freer the mirror is from “dirt”, the more accurate of an image it presents.‫(שבת‬ )‫מלכתא‬ A Yiddishe Momma emulates that godly power to bring things into existence. She literally develops a piece of essence seeing in it, not herself, but another - a child.

She is called a ‫ אם‬comprised of an "‫ "א‬representing “one”, an allusion to G-d, and a "‫"מ‬, numerically equivalent to 40, the number of days a child gestates until it forms. At that stage well before the child is born, she is already a mother. It is her selfless devotion, that emulates the selflessness of G-d, that ennobles her in this great mission. It is evident from the moment of conception and continues through a lifetime of inspired dedication to her children. Only one who can reduce one’s self through quiet introspection, independent of a need for validation from others, can bring forth healthy fruit. Shelomis sought external recognition. Constantly chattering, she sought to gain the social favor and attention of those around her. It took a toll on her progeny who as a result was insecure in himself, striking out with frustration at G-d Himself. A true ‫אם‬, mother, speaks with the softness of ‫אמירה‬, thoughtful and kind words, not the harshness of ‫דיבור‬, strong statements of self-expression. It is the difference between making

yourself understood and merely making sure that you’re heard. We sing in that magnificent composition ‫ נעשה אדם נאמר ב�ע‬:‫בר יוחיאי‬ ‫בורך‬, (the statement by God), “We will make Man”, was said about you. Rabbi Shimon exemplified the greatest character traits he saw in Rabbi Akiva. He had achieved a level of perfection that ascended towards that remarkable appellation "‫"אדם‬. We can be certain his greatness began from the moment he started his journey in his mother’s womb. Tradition tells us that indeed his mother’s heartfelt tears in her quest to bring into this world, one who would enlighten and reflect in his brilliance the beauty of the Shechinah itself, is what brought out such pure fruit, that continues to inspire us all, in allowing us to reach well beyond our physical limitations in sensing the splendor and depth of the hidden Torah. No wonder she became the paradigm for all mothers to merit such children. Indeed, we state in the famed poem Bar Yochai: ‫אשרי יולדע‬ ‫תך‬, praiseworthy is the one who gave birth to you. It is that quintessential Yiddeshe Mamma that has held it together through our long history of struggle and survival. In her hands lies our hope that we can restore the glory of our past. That famed yiddishe lid concludes: In vasser und fayer, through fire and water, volt ihr gelofin far ihr kind, would she run for her child, Nisht halten ihr tayer, Not holding her dear, doss is giviss der greste zind, is for sure the greatest sin, Oy vie gliklach und raych is der mentsh vus hut, oh how fortunate and enriched is the man who has, az a za tayere mattuna geshenkent funn Gott, such a beautiful gift sent from God... A Yiddishe Maama! May we take a moment to reflect on, and thank, that most precious person, our mother, who we are so fortunate to have come from!

n an early Friday Shushan Purim morning, we began the long drive to friends in Jerusalem. It was a sunny day with the first scent of spring in the air. As we were driving out of Ma’alot the car’s windshield was splattered yellow by an insect. I cleared the windshield with soap and water. I asked my wife, Keren, if she had noticed anything out of the ordinary in the skies. She initially said no, but then caught herself short and said, “There’s another. And another. They’re everywhere!” We were witness to uncountable numbers of butterflies flying by and at us in that seemingly indiscriminate dance of theirs. More curious was the fact that they appeared to be flying in the same direction: north by north west, which, after witnessing this for almost 100 kilometers, made me think they weren’t acting so indiscriminately. This phenomenon occurred over and over again all the way to Jerusalem. At times there were so many they were impossible to count. Not having seen anything quite like this before, my curiosity was

piqued. I thought I’d find little to nothing on the internet. But I was wrong. We called our friend Yehuda Schwartz, whose first comment was to ask me why I hadn’t been reading the papers. “Wherever I look there are stories about them,” he added. I told him we were driving in the

I ran the numbers through my head. I knew that if Israel was 22,000 square kilometers in size, and I multiplied that by 25,000, I’d get close to 600,000,000. So I told him that the difference of 400,000,000 might be meaningful. I won’t repeat what he called me, but while I was doing the sums, the car must have been hit by

twenty butterflies. Then the windshield wiper fluid ran out and the wipers were scraping and dragging yellow liquid matter across my line of vision. I had to pull over to replenish the wiper fluid. We spoke to friends living near Be’er Sheva, who told us they had driven through swarms of butterflies so thick they couldn’t see anything in front of them. Once we got the windshield clean and we’d started again, Keren searched the internet and came up with the same kinds of facts that Yehuda had told us. The head of the Association of Butterfly lovers in Israel, Dubi Binyamini, explained the calculation to Israel21c. What he did was estimate how many butterflies fly over a given square meter per minute. He took that number and multiplied it by their flying time and then by the width of the area they invaded. That’s how he arrived at a billion butterflies flying over Israel every day. The painted lady is the most prolific butterfly in the world. It can be found everywhere, except in Antarctica and Australia. In perfect conditions it can fly up to 50 kilometers

he opening subject matter in this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Torah reading deals with the existence of impurities in Jewish and human society. In our world today, especially in the realm of the intelligentsia, there is a great deal of chatter and worry about the pollution of our atmosphere. When the threat of global warming proved to be unfounded, the environmentalists amongst us changed the focus of their dire warnings, about the extinction of our planet, to now be under the new slogan of climate change. There is very little if any scientific evidence to support their claims that the world as we know it will disappear in the very near future because of fossil fuels, carbon emissions, and the natural behavior of cows. Nevertheless, it is clear that all of us have to be against pollution of the atmosphere. The pollution referred to in our Torah reading is of a different nature completely. It concerns itself with the impurity that comes from death and not from life, from sin and the non-performance of good deeds and noble aspirations. It prohibits the priestly descendants of Aaron from

They have done so with fancy-sounding slogans that espouse all types of freedom, but really impose upon those who disagree with them the tyranny of enforced conformity. In many parts of the world today, especially in the Far East, people wear masks over their noses and mouths to prevent the air pollution that surrounds them from being inhaled. There is no question that we all need such spiritual masks as well to allow us to counter the destructive pollution and impurity of much of the norms of the society that we live in.

Dear Navidaters,

My son was briefly married and got divorced 14 months ago. Everything happened so quickly. I think that they were both very immature and frankly probably had no right getting married in the first place. There were no children involved, and the divorced was quick and as painless as such things can be.

Recently he shared the fact that he had started speaking with his ex-wife again and that they were both more mature and understanding about what went wrong. He told me that they want to start dating again and see if they can make it work. My husband and I never really knew exactly why they got divorced, aside from the fact that they were both very unhappy. We certainly never actually disliked our ex-daughter-in-law for any particular reason but this whole idea seems so strange to us, we don’t even know what to do with it. My fear is that they have a very strong attraction for one another and that they are probably both lonely. But that’s hardly enough reason to start dating. Do any of you have any experience with such situations and do you have any thoughts as to whether this is something worth pursuing or whether it’s a crazy idea? Mind you, I’m not so sure our son will actually care what I say to him on the matter, because he tends to follow his own heart, but I am curious to know your thoughts regardless.

I question why you didn’t encourage professional help and guidance before the divorce was executed. The fact that he did share with you that he has been talking to his ex and that they are considering dating means that he does want some input and guidance. I would run, not walk, to professional rabbinic and family therapy experts for help here on how to respond and how to handle things, both long term and short term. My guess is that they would suggest waiting a lot longer to start dating each other again. They are lonely and know each other fairly well by now. Fear of the unknown and lack of dating suggestions may be driving them. While remarrying one’s divorced partner is considered a good thing in Jewish sources, it should not be a reflexive act.

Seriously, though, if maturity is the key factor in a happy marriage, then all the young frum kids getting married (the cute “babies-having-babies” types) would end up miserable and divorced. Thankfully, such is not the case. Trust me, your son’s marriage did not fall apart solely due to “immaturity.” Divorce is never undertaken blithely or unilaterally; it takes two people to make a marriage work, and, by the same token, it takes both to agree it’s not working. Usually, the gut-wrenching decision to divorce is reached only after consul-

tation with rabbinic authorities and marriage therapists. To complicate matters, the trauma of your son’s divorce did not dampen his attraction or comfort level with his ex-wife. Above all – and this is the hard part – keep your comments, questions, advice, opinions, and witticisms to yourself. Criticism of your son or his choice of partner may backfire and lead to renewed heartbreak. Finally, if you’re finding it hard to maintain that maternal “sweet spot” of concern tempered with restraint, consult a qualified therapist for assistance.

They should not rush into anything and take as much time as they need to feel comfortable going into a marriage again. I sense that you don’t have a close relationship with your son, which is either by one person’s design or an arrangement that makes the most sense for both of you for personal reasons. I agree with The Mother in that I think there is a lot you don’t know about your son and his marriage. Entertaining your immaturity theory for a moment… if this is truly the world’s most immature couple – taking a marriage and divorce so lightly, entering and exiting like you would break a car lease – if they have not been through intense therapy or in a process of active and meaningful personal growth, then the likelihood that they will make it a second time around is probably very slim to none, as old patterns are highly likely to repeat themselves once the honeymoon period wears off, which, in their case, is going to be incredi-

bly fast. In my experience, when frum couples divorce after a short marriage, there is either something very important that was withheld from one or both parties when dating only to be revealed after the marriage; there was abuse, addiction or infidelity; or there was the realization that they rushed into this and were not a suitable pair. Ultimately, you have no control over what these two do. Whether they’re immature or gave their divorce great thought, if they want to date, they will find a way to date. It is their decision to be made. When we have no control over a situation (as is often the case in life), we have to ask ourselves, What is my role? If you haven’t done so already, and your relationship allows, I think that as his mom you should actively show him that you respect his thought process and share your concerns with him. If you haven’t asked him already, you absolutely should ask him what happened the first time around. “Look, Dad and I love and respect you and understand that ultimately this is your decision. But we are your parents and we are very concerned about you and Shira dating again. We are here for you. Can we talk?” He may not want to answer, and you will have to respect that choice

and give him space. But showing love and concern for your son, his wellbeing, and his future is always a parent’s place. As his mother, you can encourage him to seek professional counseling to help facilitate his personal growth as he makes this decision (nudge him once or twice... don’t hock him a chaynik). In order for them to have any chance as a couple, he needs to understand what his role was in the breakdown of their marriage (and she does as well. If her mother wrote in, I would say the same to her). A qualified therapist will help him do this work. If your son “follows his own heart” and doesn’t listen to you, but is respectful and polite, then that is fine. But if he doesn’t listen to you because he is not open to any feedback and/or if he responds to you with anger or hostili-

ty, then he has to work on these traits before he can make this or any other relationship work. Wishing you and your family all the best. He was flying a Spitfire with the 52nd Fighter Group based out of Sicily when his plane malfunctioned over Southern France in February 1944. Being shot down by an enemy plane or anti-aircraft doesn’t necessarily spell total doom for the pilot. If he or she is shot down over friendly territory, they could eject, open their parachute and be returned to their base within a short period of time. For a Soviet World War II pilot named Kuzniecov this wasn’t the case. He was on a reconnaissance mission in his Iluyshin Il-2 when he was attacked by two German Messerschmitt fighters. After crash-landing in German-held territory, one of the German pilots landed to see if he could collect any souvenirs from the downed Russian. Much to the German’s cha-

bottom of the helicopter! The scene was quite incredible as one helicopter was carrying another helicopter. They even made it to safety just before an oncoming sandstorm. Within 36 hours, the Galaxy arrived back in the U.S. – this time carrying the captured Russian helicopter. The mission was a complete success. These are just three of several incredible stories about capturing or stealing enemy aircraft. In the 1960s, the Israeli Mossad pulled off an audacious operation to capture a top-of-theline Russian MiG-21 – which is a story for another time. Capturing enemy airplanes and helicopters saved the lives of many airmen by either taking them to safety or with the intelligence gained from their capture.

In another incident that could have come from a major Hollywood movie but is completely true, U.S. Special Forces captured a Russian helicopter in spectacular fashion. The Mil Mi-24 and its export model, the Mil Mi-25 Hind, is a large helicopter gunship that can also be used as a troop carrier. First introduced in the early 1970s, the attack helicopter is still in use today and has the nickname the “Flying Tank.” The CIA was keen on getting one of these Russian helicopters when word came that the Libyan Air Force had left one in northern Chad. It was parked at the Ouadi Doum airfield, and in 1987, the U.S. made secret plans to capture the valuable prize. The training and planning took a year and all the while the abandoned Hind was never moved, even though Libyan forces were highly active in the area. The team that was tasked with the mission, called Operation Mount Hope III, was the 160th Special Operations

You have probably heard “I’m fine” countless times from people who were anything but fine. People who need help often refuse to accept it and even when they are compelled to accept help they are often ashamed to admit it. This is especially true in mental health where very often many years go by before someone is willing to see a therapist. Why are people so unwilling to admit that they need help? What are we afraid of? A beautiful insight from Rabbi Yitzchak Hutner Zt”l (Pachad Yitzchak, Chanukah, 2:5) sheds light on this aspect of human nature. Rav Hutner points out that the Hebrew word “modeh” has two seemingly unrelated meanings. On the one hand, it means to offer thanks. But it can also mean to admit or confess. When someone receives a favor from his friend and thanks him, we say that he is being modeh. When someone is accused of a crime and confesses, we also say that he is being modeh. What is the connection between these two meanings? Rav Hutner explains that human beings have an intense desire to be independent. When a person thanks someone else for a favor that was received, he is admitting defeat and confessing that at least this time he has failed to be independent and was compelled to accept help from someone

else. Therefore, modeh means both thanking and confessing, since within every expression of thanksgiving is a confession that he has failed this time in his attempt at independence. When someone sees a therapist, he is recognizing that his emotional health is something that he cannot manage on his own. We often view our emotions as the essence of who we are, so admitting that we have failed at achieving independence in this area is truly challenging. There are virtually no bad character traits. There are just proper and improper applications of those traits. Seeking independence is a perfect example. Working towards self-sufficiency is a virtue that the Torah values very highly. However, when that independence is self-defeating then the right thing to do is to be “modeh” that you need help. You are not a failure of a human being. Rather, you are acting courageously by overcoming the stigma of seeking help and accepting help when necessary. This is a service of Relief Resources. Iran and U.S. Mobilizations Could Lead to Conflict By David Ignatius

ehind recent U.S. and Iranian military mobilizations lies a perception by each side that the other may be about to attack. This doesn’t appear to be posturing by either nation but is instead a confrontation that could lead to actual conflict if there’s a miscalculation. The United States sent an aircraft carrier task force, bombers and other assets to the Middle East last weekend after officials concluded that Iran had altered its strategy of waiting out the Trump administration’s pressure campaign – and was instead making preparations for a possible military strike on U.S. forces in the region. Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie, the new U.S. Central Command leader, said in a speech last Wednesday that the buildup came “in direct response to a number of troubling and escalatory indicators and warnings.” His spokesman, Navy Capt. Bill Urban, had said the previous day there were “clear indications that Iranian and Iranian proxy forces are making preparations to possibly attack U.S. forces in the region.” This sense of an imminent Iranian threat marks a break from what U.S. officials had predicted just two weeks ago. At that time, officials expected that Tehran would try to ride out President Trump’s campaign of sanctions over the next 20 months, in the hope they would be removed by his successor. But last week, based on new information, the United States concluded that the Iranians had decided to reset

their strategy now and were moving military equipment to prepare for action. It’s not clear whether this turnabout happened because U.S. sanctions were squeezing so hard that the Iranians couldn’t wait until January 2021, or because they concluded that Trump might be reelected. The message of U.S. willingness to use force appears to have registered with Iran and its proxies. I received

American intermediary, whom I’ve known for nearly a decade, conveyed the message on condition that the militia leader’s name and organization wouldn’t be directly identified. U.S. officials have been particularly worried about a possible attack by Iranian proxies on the more than 5,000 U.S. troops in Iraq who are training Iraqi military forces and otherwise bolstering security in the country. So

a text message on Thursday morning from an American who travels widely in Syria and Iraq. He said he was contacting me on behalf of the head of the leading Iran-backed Shiite militia organization in Iraq. According to this intermediary, Iran-backed forces had “pre-positioned themselves to respond to U.S. escalation,” but “there was no plan for attack, only a response if the U.S. attacked.” The militia leader’s tone seemed conciliatory: “There is still an opening to de-escalate things if the other side doesn’t want direct conflict,” he said, according to the intermediary who had been asked to speak on his behalf. The

the message from the Iranian militia leader speaks, at least indirectly, to a major American concern. The Iranian-backed militias were said to have been especially worried after U.S. helicopters dropped flares near Camp Speicher in Iraq, near Tikrit, where some of the Shiite militias are based. The flares ignited fields of crops near the base, and the militias apparently feared that this might be a prelude to military action. The larger question emerging from this week’s showdown is where the U.S. strategy of “maximum pressure” is heading. The Iranians clearly are feeling the squeeze and looking for a way

to push back. Part of Tehran’s pushback was last week’s announcement by President Hassan Rouhani that Iran would withdraw from parts of the 2015 nuclear agreement, in response to Trump’s announcement that he was abandoning the pact and re-imposing U.S. sanctions. The Pentagon has feared that the Iranian reset might include kinetic military action, too, in the hope that it would push the United States back toward negotiations. Iran’s confusion about the Trump administration was exemplified by a comment on Thursday by Majid Takht Ravanchi, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, in an interview with NBC’s Andrea Mitchell. She asked whether Rouhani would be willing to sit down with Trump and negotiate a broader agreement, which Trump has sometimes said was his goal. “All of a sudden, he said that ‘I don’t like this and let’s sit down and talk about another rounds of negotiations,’” Ravanchi said. “What is the guarantee that he will not renege again on the future talks between Iran and the United States?” What’s clearest, after this week of saber rattling, is that Iran was mistaken if it hoped that a show of force would lead the United States to retreat. McKenzie put it bluntly in his speech last Wednesday: “Any attack on U.S. interests will be met with unrelenting force.” That doesn’t sound like a bluff. (c) 2019, Washington Post Writers Group

ast week’s tragedy in Lakewood was horrific. A nearly 2-year-old beautiful girl was unintentionally left in the car and died from vehicular heatstroke. In other words, she was left in a locked car which rapidly heated up – and the outside temperature was only 69 degrees. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Since 1998, when the United States started keeping records on this, there have been 801 deaths, according to noheatstroke.org, an organization founded by Jan Null, a meteorologist whose passion is to prevent these types of death from happening. Mr. Null readily agreed to be interviewed for this article, as did all people cited throughout. Death by hyperthermia is a heatstroke. Heatstroke is a type of severe heat illness that results in a body temperature of greater than 104 degrees. When the core body temperature cannot cool down, everything breaks down and the gut leaks toxins. The combination of children’s bodies not cooling down as rapidly and as efficiently as adults, and that cars, even in cool spring weather, can heat up swiftly in the sun, can be a lethal combination. We are never to judge these par-

ents or any parents who forget children in their cars. It can happen to any person. The highly educated, the lesser educated, the religious, the nonreligious, the wealthy, the middle class, the poor. Parents of all ages and ethnicities do it. 25% of all parents report that at some point, they have lost awareness of a child in the car. Clearly, each of us and all of us are vulnerable. Parents who forget children in cars are not criminally negligent. And they are not “bad” parents. It happens because of the way our human brains work. Any parent, grandparent, caregiver, or other person driving children is susceptible. Allow me to explain.

The Battle of the Brain Neuropsychologist Dr. David M. Diamond of the University of South Florida is an expert on memory. Since 2004, he has studied the phenomenon of parents forgetting about children and leaving them in cars. He has also interviewed many parents of such children. Dr. Diamond explains that our brains have several memory systems that compete with one another. “Habit memory” involves tasks with repetitive actions that are per-

formed automatically. For example, we wake up in the morning, say modeh ani, wash negel vaser, and then begin the day. Another example of habitual memory is getting in the car and driving from our home to our office. Habit memory allows us to multi-task without being fully conscious so that while we are driving, we might have a conversation with another person or listen to a podcast. Think of this as being on auto-pilot mode. “Prospective memory” allows us to hold information in our heads and plan to use it at some point in the future. We all try “to remember to remember.” It can either be timebased or event-based and something that can be triggered by a cue. For example: I see the store’s advertisement (cue) which reminds me to purchase milk (action). It is a daily occurrence that habit memory will prevail over the prospective memory. tive memory caused by the dominance of the brain’s habit memory is an almost daily occurrence,” Dr. Diamond says. “When we forget to stop for groceries on the way home from work, it’s because the habit memory system takes us directly home, suppressing our awareness (prospective memory) that we had planned to stop at the store.” It would be wonderful if all prospective memory failures were as “pareve” as forgetting about a grocery item or two or even a more complete grocery shopping. Go back for a moment to the recent Lakewood tragedy – the news reports cited that the parents, who will thankfully not be charged with her death, had a “misunderstanding” about the day’s plans. Dr. Diamond underscores, “Our flawed prospective memory puts those we love at risk. This is especially true when we assume that precautions are not necessary because such tragedies happen only to negligent parents. The evidence is clear that the assumption is wrong.”

Some readers may remember when we put car seats on the passenger seat. It was not all that long ago. When that happened, parents did not forget children because they were in plain sight; they were simply unforgettable. Yet technology and research

days that can have negative repercussions if not used properly. This piece of plastic and electronics can be distracting, as it disrupts our focus and attention. A universal observation that Dr. Diamond has made after such tragedies is that each parent’s brain appears to have created the false memory that he or she brought the child to daycare. This incongruity explains

thermia in cars since 1998. The other 46% have been caused by children gaining access to unattended cars and becoming trapped therein, as well as children being left intentionally in cars. How do children gain access to unattended cars? There are people who leave their cars unlocked, for whatever reasons. Here’s a plausible scenario of how a tragedy can unfold. It’s a beautiful afternoon when children return home from day camp. Later in the afternoon, they are playing “hide-and-seek” outside supervised by Imma, Daddy, Bubby, Saba or whomever. The adult in charge needs to step inside the house, perhaps to check on dinner or use the restroom. The adult might say to the 8- or 9- or 10-year old who is there, “Please hold down the fort and keep an eye on things while I run inside quickly.” The adult returns within 3-5 minutes and resumes supervising. It might be a short moment or two or several longer moments when the adult notices that 4-year-old Shlomo is nowhere to be found. The adult calls out for Shlomo but there’s no answer. The adult scurries around, looking at the neighbor’s property, going back inside their own house, and around the property. Others engage in the search. Those moments when you cannot find a child when he is supposed to be somewhere are terrifying. “Typically, cars are not the first ‘go-to’ place that people search for a missing-in-action child,” Mrs. Rollins says. “Yet a child perceives of a car as a ‘fun’ place to hide and hang out. If you have a pool, wouldn’t that be one of the first places you check? Make your car is place #2.” Once a child enters an unlocked car and locks the doors, he is trapped. The child safety locks kick into action and the child cannot unlock them. As the car heats up and the child is inside, the unthinkable and unspeakable can happen. Noheatstroke.org’s Jan Null is clear that children gaining access to cars accounts for 26.3% of deaths involving kids, cars, and hyperthermia. 18.9% of these deaths are caused by

tentionally in a car is unique, they all share certain commonalities: • A change in the parent’s routine that leads Mommy or Tatty to follow an alternate route or routine • A change in how the parent interacted with the child during the drive, such as the child might have fallen asleep during the drive and is therefore silent • A lack of a cue such as a sound or an object associated with the child, i.e., leaving the diaper bag on the front passenger seat. It seems that there is a “choice point” during the drive where the parent should be going to the daycare or to another destination like work or home. At that choice, Dr. Diamond says, parents report having lost awareness that the child is in the car. Parents who have forgotten children this way report stressful or distracting experiences before and/or during the drive. Sleep deprivation is also a major factor. It is known that stress and lack of sleep can compromise the habit memory and impair the prospective memory. When stress and sleep deprivation are factored into the scenario, it is likely that the habit memory system will hijack the prospective memory system. We frum Jews know only too well about stress and sleep deprivation. Our measures in these areas can be quite off the charts. We are also multi-taskers par excellence. Our families are larger. It’s not uncommon for parents to be dealing with bottle and diapers, homework, high school and/or seminary and yeshiva applications AND shidduchim, many times all concurrently. The challenges of earning parnassah to support our families and lifestyles has been anecdotally documented. It’s not easy to juggle all these balls. Let’s not forget our action-packed days of getting up and out, keeping home and work going, preparing dinner, readying for Shabbos, etc. There is no lack of what to do when we are raising our families. I would be remiss to leave out the perils of the cellphone. Let’s face it – many people, especially millennials, are always browsing and the cellphone has become a permanent appendage. It’s the way of life nowa-

a caregiver knowingly leaving a child unattended in car. A survey of 1,000 parents in 2014 revealed that 14% of parents have done this. And fathers are more likely to behave this way than mothers. Leaving a child unattended in a car – how can this happen? “Impatience seems to be the order of the day,” Dr. Diamond explains. “People are in a hurry. People have so much to get done. An adult may think that an errand in a store will be ‘only’ 3 minutes – and before they know it, it’s more like 15 minutes.” Our packed lives are jammedpacked with everything we need and want to get done. As always, time is of the essence. Is this scenario all that unlikely? G-d forbid, if you ever saw this, I urge you to break the window of the car and get out the child. A broken window is a nothing price to pay for a healthy, live child. The professionals interviewed for this article are emphatic that people who intentionally leave a child alone in a car are negligent. “A child not in view puts the child in harm’s way,” Dr. Diamond emphasizes, “including at the risk of being kidnapped.” This statistic of 46% of pediatric hyperthermia deaths due to children gaining access to unattended cars or parents leaving them intentionally in cars is the reason why many professionals in this field, including Dr. Diamond, Ms. Amber and Mr. Null, dislike the phrase coined by the media, “Forgotten Baby Syndrome (FBS).” In our penchant to label and categorize things and events – part of how our brains work – people seek names for phenomena like this, the media included. Yet it does a disservice. Neuroscientist Dr. Diamond explains that “FBS trivializes forgetting kids in car and makes it something akin to forgetting our phones or wallets in the car. But do we label everything so there is ‘Forgotten Keys Syndrome’ or ‘Forgotten Notebook Syndrome’?”

What We Should Do The solutions here are multifactorial and layered. They should all be used at different points in order to create a “win-win” for all so there are

no more tragic deaths of children this way. As we know, the consequences of the death of a child reverberate for generations. 1. Take this phenomenon seriously. Don’t think that you are the person to whom it will never happen. Give up thinking, “I love my child so much that I can’t imagine ever leaving him/her in the back of the car.” 2. Be honest about the limitations of this fantastically fascinating marvel called the human brain especially when it functions during times of overload, stress and sleep deprivation. Embrace its limitations. 3. You should physically open the car’s back door and check the backseat when leaving the vehicle. It is essential to implement this point 100%. “It has been proven that it takes 21 days to make something into a habit,” says Mrs. Rollins. “Start this habit today.” 4. Every day you are in the car, whether your baby is with you or not, take one item that you NEED to start your day and put it in the back seat of the car in front of the car seat. It might be your laptop, employee ID badge, your lunch, or briefcase. Make it something you NEED, as all items are important, with none nearing the importance of your precious child. 5. Look before you lock the car. Another habit to start pronto. 6. Communicate w ith your spouse and others in your home to maximize communication and minimize miscommunication. Picture one parent pulling the car

into the driveway while Rachelli is sleeping soundly in the car seat. The back of the car is popped open which is followed by the frenetic rush to unload the groceries. Do not assume that Rachelli has been moved from her car seat into the house. Verbal-

ly communicate to your spouse or an older child something like, “You get the bundles while I get Rachelli.” Remember: any change in routine increases the risk factor of forgetting about a child. 7. Ask your babysitter or day care provider to call you by a certain time if your child has not been dropped off yet. Let’s say Reuven is due at the babysitter no later than 7:50 a.m. on weekday mornings. The babysitter should call you no later than 8 a.m. if Reuven has not been dropped off yet. If the child has been left in the car, this layer can prevent a potential pediatric death by hyperthermia because of swift action. “It should be part of your daily habit,” Dr. Diamond and Mrs. Rollins both stress. (Preventative “stress” is good stress.) 8. Lock all cars AFTER making sure there are no children inside. 9. Keep cars and remote openers where kids cannot access them. Tod-

To appreciate the scope of this nuanced issue, it is important to give a comprehensive overview. I cannot emphasize enough that we need to remove the mindset of “it will never happen to me.” It can happen to each of us. Period. n the criminal justice system, taxbased offenses aren’t considered especially heinous…but they still cost the government a ton of money. In field offices throughout the country, the dedicated Special Agents who investigate these expensive felonies are members of an elite squad known as IRS Criminal Investigation. (They’re also the only IRS agents who get to pack heat, rock a Kevlar vest, and go undercover.) From the FY 2018 CI Annual Report, these are their stories. (Dun Dun.) • Shawanda Nevers – aka Shawanda Hawkins, Shawanda Bryant, and Shawanda Johnson – operated several businesses in New Orleans, including a sports bar and a tax-prep shop. She must have thought her taxes should be as spicy as her cooking. So she whipped up returns giving her clients fake business losses, deductions, and credits. In 2014, the IRS permanently barred her from preparing taxes. But she kept les bon temps rouler until CI agents busted her again, fined her $7 million, and sentenced her to seven years of bland prison chow. • Kelly Sue Reynolds worked as a bookkeeper in North Carolina. Over five years, she embezzled $439,459.97 from her employer, in-

cluding the money that was supposed to pay their taxes. (That’s the mark of a top-notch bookkeeper, right? They can tell you down to the penny how much they stole.) When the IRS came looking for their money, CI agents busted Reynolds’ scheme. Now she’s counting down two years in the “camp” where Martha Stewart served. It’s been called “America’s cushiest prison”…but Reynolds still

“Income Tax Payments.” Perfectly kosher, right? What clients didn’t know was that she had set up a phony account called (wait for it) “Income Tax Payments,” under her own name. She used their money for a pricey house, cosmetic surgery, vacations, and an Arabian horse. Lizzie’s husband ratted her out to clients, then CI agents joined to “stable” her in a

Phoenix prison for five years. • Monsignor (!) Hien Minh Nguyen was a priest for the San Jose archdiocese and director of the local Vietnamese Catholic Center. Apparently he missed class the day they discussed that whole “poverty” thing in priest school. Nguyen stole cash donations from parishioners and deposited their checks in his personal account, among other sins. CI agents visited him, hoping for a confession, and used his lies and inconsistent answers to build a case that led to $1.9 million in restitution and three years in prison. (He can probably count on a few years in purgatory, too.) It’s sometimes fun to see what happens to people when their good judgment and common sense take early retirement. Of course, we all want to pay less tax! But you don’t have to risk a visit from a pistol-packing Special Agent to do it. Make sure you have a plan and see how much you can save without posing for mug shots.

Honey Chicken

Ingredients Chicken 2 pounds chicken breasts cut into 1-inch pieces 1 ½ cups flour 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp cumin ½ tsp coriander ½ tsp onion powder Canola oil for frying

Honey Sauce 1 cup honey 4 TBS low sodium soy sauce 2 TBS balsamic vinegar 4 TBS ketchup 2 TBS cornstarch 2 TBS water

Preparation In a medium bowl, mix flour with all the spices. Coat the chicken with the spices and set aside. Heat a large sauté pan and fry the chicken in batches till brown and crispy. Drain on a paper towel. Mix the sauce ingredients, except the cornstarch and water, in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. In a small cup, mix the water with the cornstarch until smooth and pour into sauce. This will thicken the sauce. Place chicken and sauce in a sauté pan, on low heat, and mix until chicken is well-coated in sauce. Simmer for five minutes on low.

What You Will Need for the Cake: 6 eggs- separated 6 Tbl. sugar 6 Tbl. potato 1 Tbl. Vanilla starch sugar Preparation: 1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Beat egg whites until foamy. Add sugar slowly until whites are stiff. Into same bowl, gently fold in egg yolks, potato starch ,and vanilla sugar. Spread batter onto parchment-lined large cookie sheet (17 “ x 13”) 2. Bake for 22 minutes or until sponge cake is light brown. Cool. Cut sponge cake into 2 equal rectangles- about 9x13 each. Remove from parchment.

8 oz. pkg. Tofutti cream cheese ¼ cup sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 2 oz. pkg instant vanilla pudding 16 oz. pareve whipping creamdefrosted

½ cup seedless raspberry or blackberry preserves- plus 3 Tbl. 1 quart fresh strawberries, cleaned and sliced – or 1 lb frozen stra berries, defrosted and drained o water

Preparation: 1. Combine Tofutti, sugar, and vanilla in large bowl. Beat with electric mixture on high until smooth; set aside. 2. Combine water and pudding in small bowl until pudding is dissolved. Cool. 3. Add pudding mixture to Tofutti mixture. Add whipped topping; beat one or two minutes, scraping sides of bowl. Set aside. 4. Whisk preserves and spread evenly over bottom of 11 x 7 inch glass baking dish, which has been sprayed with cooking spray. 5. Place one piece of sponge cake in pan, cutting around edges to fit the pan. Spread ½ of Tofutti mixture evenly over spongecake. Spread strawberries in one layer over the cream. Top with second piece of spongecake. Spread remaining Tofutti mixture on top of spongecake. To Decorate the Top: 6. Place 3 Tbl. of seedless preserves into corner of a plastic sandwich bag. Cut small hole in bag where the preserves are . Squeeze preserves in stripe pattern over the cream. With a toothpick, pull toothpick through preserve stripes, alternating up and down with toothpick, to make a pretty design on top of cake. 7. Refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving. 8. Enjoy!
