Dear Readers, On Friday morning, June 12th, when word spread that three yeshiva boys were taken captive by Hamas in Israel, every person who heard the news shuddered over the tragedy. A situation like this is horrible, and we hope that Hashem will bring home the three boys safely and quickly. As much as we understand that we cannot all don uniforms and weapons and storm into Hebron searching for Naftali, Gil-ad, and Eyal, we can certainly storm the Heavens and beg Hashem for their freedom. We can join together and show Hashem how united we are in our tefillos for our brothers. The display of unity through prayer and the like has been simply remarkable. There is something that each of us can and should be doing to help bring Naftali, Gil-ad, and Eyal back to their families and back to the people who love them and miss them: We can learn a little more, show a little more patience, and be more careful with the mitzvos we do daily. May Hashem bring these wonderful boys back home quickly and safely and may we share in good news together as a klal.

He continued by speaking of the importance of the talmidim continuing the mesorah handed to them by their illustrious rebbeim. Rabbi Yisroel Fuchs, Mesivta Menahel, spoke of the class’ achdus, cohesiveness, and caring for one another. He spoke at length of how much pleasure it gives him to see how these boys have grown in their Torah learning and middos over their Mesivta career. Rabbi Shimshon Steinberg, Director of General Studies, provided a message to the seniors about their future and the need to remember what is important in their lives. As they mature they should keep in mind that material things do not last; only our spiritual achievements remain as a legacy for us. The Student’s Address, was delivered by graduate Moshe Rosenberg. What splendid representatives these graduates are of the T.A. Mesivta graduating class! A delicious dinner was prepared by Mr. Tzvi Feigenbaum, TA’s chef par excellence. Thank you to the boys who helped to serve the meal. There was also a beautiful dessert table. Bentching was led by Rabbi Doniel Metzger. Many thanks go out to Mrs. Leah Donaty, Mrs. Shoshana Schmell, and all the volunteer helpers. Their behind-the-scenes efforts helped make the graduation such a success. The elegant table settings and décor added so much to the making of a fabulous 2014 senior graduation.

Chai Lifeline Gives a Child the Ride of a Lifetime Ian had the ride of a lifetime. Ian Scher, an eleven-year-old boy living in Reisterstown, Maryland, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy with pontocerebellar hypoplasia. Caused by a mutation in the VRK1 gene, this disease has caused Ian to develop many physical limitations over the years, and he is attached to an array of medical machinery. While his diagnosis is rare, Ian’s tenacity and zest for life is rarer. Despite the limitations presented by his disability, Ian continues to live and laugh and love. A few caring members of two organizations figured that if he could push the limits of his reality, then so could they. Tzvi Haber has a special relationship with Ian and his family. An

energetic and dynamic volunteer for Chai Lifeline living in the Baltimore community, Tzvi utilized his passion for the Scher family and his innate creativity to turn an ordinary day in Ian’s life into an extraordinary day. Ian loves motorcycles. To a boy with a diagnosis that has slowly crippled his body and limited him to the confines of a wheelchair, a motorcycle represents everything that was stolen from him: the feeling of freedom and independence. Knowing that you are in control of your own life and destiny instills a sense of confidence and calm in oneself, something that a boy like Ian has been utterly deprived of having.

It is painfully ironic that the simple imagery of two interconnected wheels can represent two fundamentally different concepts to two different sets of people. One sees a motorcycle and freedom. The other sees a wheelchair and limitation. This idea was all about giving Ian a sense of freedom. Tzvi reached out to all of the motorcycle clubs in the local Maryland region and a special group of individuals called the Lonsmen Motorcycle Club answered the call. After weeks of coordinating, Ian’s special day had finally arrived. On Sunday morning, nearly 30 bikers from the predominantly Jewish Lonsmen Motorcycle Club arrived at Ian’s home wearing their customized leather jackets and bandanas. “You should have seen Ian’s face when he heard all those engines revving, pulling up in front of our house. His face just lit up with excitement and anticipation,” said Ian’s mother. Because Ian is no longer able to support his own body weight, the Lonsmen Motorcycle Club brought a motorcycle that was retrofitted with a sidecar for Ian and all his medical equipment. Not just any sidecar; a hot rod red BMW sidecar that would make Ian feel like he was the king of the road. And that is exactly how he felt. The nearly 30 motorcyclists of the Lonsmen Motorcycle Club lined their magnificent bikes on all sides of Ian’s sidecar, radio music playing and engines revving. Ian’s hair billowed in the wind as he was surrounded by a motorcade of complete strangers who had come to give him a memory that he will never forget. A Lonsman is a Yiddish term of endearment between Jews, often connoting kinship and common ground. On this beautiful Sunday morning, that is exactly the feeling that was felt by all. “I can only imagine how Ian felt looking in front of him and looking behind him and seeing these complete strangers who had come to give him and his family an experience that they will never forget,” says Tzvi. Chai Lifeline made it possible for

Ian, for the slightest of moments, to forget about his diagnosis and prognosis. Ian was able to temporarily break through the limitations of his condition and experience that which he would normally have never been able to experience. “Today was a day for the books. After months of preparation, it was here. Through Tzvi Haber of Chai Lifeline and Mark Lobel of the Lonsmen Motorcycle Club, Ian finally got

If there is magic in this world, it is to be found in the midst of the Lonsmen Motorcycle Club and the passionate volunteers of Chai Lifeline.

NCSY Spring Regional Shabbaton 2014 Spring Regional 2014 was the perfect blend of inspiration, education, fun, and social activism. The weekend kicked off with a day full of exciting social action opportunities in partner-

ship with local organizations, ranging from bringing Shabbat spirit to Jewish nursing homes, to helping renovate shelters, to cleaning up Marylandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parks. This marked the beginning of

an inspirational weekend, which focused on NCSY@60: Forever Young, the power of youth. Teens were treated to the entertaining yet profound words of guest speaker Rabbi Israel Lashak,

Regional Director of NCSY Southwest, and the weekend concluded with a late-night Awards Ceremony for seniors, followed by an exciting day at Six Flags America.

TA Chemdas Trip for 4th and 5th Grades Packs It All In On Thursday, June 12, 100 fourth and fifth grade talmidim, accompanied by Rebbeim and parents, were treated to a phenomenal Chemdas trip. These talmidim had spent many hours of their free time learning and being tested on many perakim of Mishnayos, so it was a well-deserved adventure. The first stop was a tour of the fascinating glass-blowing factory and museum in Millville, NJ. The boys watched beautiful glass being blown and got to see the largest glass menorah in the world. From there, they travelled to Asbury

Park, NJ. Since it was a beautiful, overcast day, the talmidim had the opportunity to walk and play on the beach and in the sand. As they dipped their feet into the majestic Atlantic Ocean, they said the special bracha one makes upon seeing an ocean. The next stop was the Golden Fluff Popcorn Factory, where the boys received a private tour given by the owner and received a bag of freshly popped popcorn. Stop four was only a few blocks away: Beth Medrash Govoha! The talmidim watched in awe as they witnessed more than a thousand men and bochurim learning in the Yeshiva. Afterwards, they were addressed by one of the Rosh Hayeshiva, HaRav Dovid Schustal, who told the boys that as they continue to undertake to learn and do more mitzvos, it will become easier and easier for them. After a pizza supper and one last stop to the Kollel supermarket Nash isle, the tired, but happy, group returned to Baltimore from a trip that they will never forget.

Ohr Chadash Academy Celebrates First Graduating Class By Eta Kushner

Usually the last day of school before summer vacation is one of the happiest days of the year for kids. So why were the halls of Ohr Chadash Academy filled with tearful girls on Wednesday morning? It was a bittersweet time for all of the middle school students. Many of them had been together since their time at Rambam before Ohr Chadash opened in 2011. Those who had joined them a year or two later quickly made strong connections to their peers, their teachers and the Ohr Chadash community. Wednesday was not only graduation day for the two eighth grade students, but also the last day for all of the middle school students at Ohr Chadash. While next year OCA will not be offering grades 6 through 8, they will grow back into those grades as the current crop of students (which will include 3 and 4 year-old groups) advance from year to year. Shortly after the sobbing sessions were calmed down, the great festivities and joy of the day was underway as Ohr Chadash held its first Middle School Graduation and Awards ceremony. This was not only the first but also the last graduation to take place in what will soon be the “old building,” the Park Heights JCC after Ohr Chadash moves at the end of the month to its new location, on the Oheb Shalom grounds, 7310 Park Heights Avenue. The feeling of “achdut”, unity, permeated the entire graduation and awards ceremony. Each time one of the middle school students received an award, loud applause and encouraging cheering broke out among their classmates. The students were truly joyful to see the successes of their fellows. As one of the faculty members later stated, although the graduates were few (2) and the school has just over 110 students, at the ceremony it felt like there were 50 graduates in a school of 500 students. Awards were given to Odellia Goliger and Aliza Taragin for Outstanding Chesed, to Yosef Chaim Delaney and Eden Hariri for Outstanding Tfilah. to

Yisroel Arnson, Yaakov Dwek, and Shira Rabinowitz for Outstanding Midot, to Shayna Kagan for Academic Excellence in Judaic Studies, to Basya Schwarz for Academic Excellence in General Studies, to Rivka Abedon and Sinai Leventhal for Outstanding Art, to Ephraim Ruttenberg for Outstanding Math, to Mali Abedon for Outstanding Drama, to Chanan Krupp for MVP Athletic Award, to Emuna Shiller for Outstanding Photography, and to Batya Braun and Yoni Brown for Greatest Progress. Rabbi Moshe Margolese, principal of OCA, spoke about how exciting it was to come together in this place in

the school’s history -- the first graduating class. He emphasized how proud he is of the graduates and their accomplishments. Speaking to the two graduates, Shira Rabinowitz and Tamar Zonenberg, he said, “We look forward to your shining the light of Ohr Chadash in the new places where you will go. Through your focus of excellence as individuals, you have developed yourselves very beautifully – and that will be a true benefit for the whole community.” Chairman of the OCA Board, Mr. Ari Taragin quoted Maya Angelou, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” It is evident that the students at Ohr Chadash feel

loved and love the school. Ms. Becky Reeves, School Coordinator, who introduced the graduates, asked, “What’s the big deal about an 8th grade graduation? There is still much more school to come in the years ahead.” She explained that while this is true, every milestone that a person passes is one to be mentioned and greatly appreciated. “Girls, this graduation is a big deal! Forever you will be written down in the history books as OCA’s first graduates! But even more importantly, this graduation is Ohr Chadash Academy’s way of showing you how much we truly care about you and how much we are behind you as you continue on your journey.” Tamar Zonenberg spoke first about how quickly the end of the year seemed to come. “Time flies when you are having fun.” She shared some of her favorite school activity memories: the trip to Philadelphia, the Shabbaton, teaching her friends how to avoid falling during ice skating and being the first class to have a video project. She advised younger students to follow the rules even when they may appear unnecessary. She said that even though she may have been annoyed with the rules, she forged the best relationships at Ohr Chadash. Focusing on the positive allowed her to have the “best year ever.” Tamar said she never had such close relationships with teachers as she had at Ohr Chadash and has made the strongest friendships there as well. She had known Rabbi Margolese at Camp Shoresh and when her mother told her that he was going to be the principal of OCA, she was extremely excited, expecting this to be a “fun

year.” And it was. She will miss coming to school and being greeted by a smile from classmates and teachers. Tamar thanked her mother and grandparents for being so supportive, understanding and awesome. Shira Rabinowitz began by thanking her parents for being so amazing. Always helping, listening, encouraging and loving. She spoke of the lesson of chesed, kindness, that she has seen demonstrated repeatedly at Ohr Chadash. Every Friday her class visited someone who needed a smile, whether it was a nursing home resident or a child with special needs. She thanked all of her teachers for their smiles, their challenges to her, the

confidence they instilled in her, their aid in dealing with social issues, and their patience in answering all of her questions. Yom Ha’atzmaut at Ohr Chadash is one memory she will always have. The girls learned to dance to the song “Am Echad,” which is about how the Jewish nation started out as a disparate people who learned to join together to create a unified whole. Shira proudly noted that even though in the begin-

ning of learning the routine they were “choppy, confused, mixed up and

credit. At some point, I realized that there was more in Yiddishkeit, and that led me to the Etz Chaim Center for Jewish Studies in the early 90s. Classes in parsha and kashrut connected me to my Judaism. Around that time, I met a nice Jewish boy at a Shlomo Carlebach post-concert kumsitz in someone’s sukkah. We got married, with Rabbi Porter as our mesader kiddushin and Rabbi Goldberger reading our ketuba. The only grandma I knew had passed away shortly before our marriage, and I decided to kasher my kitchen. We tried to keep Shabbos. I continued my cantoring during that time – shlepping to and from my pulpit. After a while, I grew to love second day yuntif. (Reform temples only celebrate the first day.) I was able to go to the Porters for a meal (Shoshie’s amazing potato kugel!) and even to shul at Rabbi Goldberger’s; these were G-d-given opportunities to recharge and reconnect! Sadly, my first marriage ended in divorce, and my dedication to the mitzvot I had taken on dissolved. Fast-forward to April 2008 (still cantoring) and my chance meeting of another nice Jewish boy on JDate. Steven lived in New York and was a Russian immigrant who had come to the U.S. in 1992. He identified Jewishly and remembered Pesach and Chanukah with his Jewish grandfather. We fell in love. On erev Shavuot, just a few weeks after meeting Steven, I found out that my cantorial contract wasn’t going to be renewed. I was devastated – it was the source of much of my parnassa. Luckily, the congregation didn’t have Shavuot services that year, and I had made plans for Steven and I to have yuntif dinner at the Porters. Having known me for so many years, Shoshie Porter suggested to me amidst my tears that perhaps I should take a break from cantoring and focus on my newfound relationship with Steven. A couple of months later, we went to Rabbi Porter to discuss marriage. Rabbi Porter had known me

for years. I am Jewish, no questions. He interviewed Steven and felt that his Jewish lineage was questionable. When Rabbi Porter broke that news to Steven, I watched the man I love fall apart inside. All he ever knew in terms of his religious identity was nullified. There was no question in my future husband’s mind. He would go through an Orthodox conversion to get rid of that stubborn question mark! His Judaism was too important for there to be any doubt, and I felt ashamed that I took my own for granted. So Steven, through learning from scratch, and both of us, through the sometimes difficult acceptance of mitzvot, including Shabbos, and kashrut, came to Orthodox Judaism. After working with a New York bais din that didn’t know him (Steven spent all his Shabbosim and holidays here dating me), Steven’s bais din was moved to Baltimore early this year. Rabbis Porter, Goldberger, and Rappaport brought Steven to the mikvah on July 15. He proposed to me later that day in the Porter’s kitchen. We were married on August 26 at Etz Chaim in an absolutely gorgeous ceremony led by Rabbi Porter and Rabbi Yonasan Tendler, of New York. There was literally a sheet of water falling from the sky that day – a siman tov – but it seemed the entire community was there to share in our joy. I owe so much to this wonderful Baltimore community. In the future, I hope to be able to do a small fraction of the chesed that has been done for me and my new husband over the years. I feel that the journey Hashem has created specifically for me is now truly underway, and that the destination I will reach, with His guidance and the guidance of my dear Rabbis and Rebbetzins Porter and Goldberger I can only now begin to imagine! After thanking G-d for helping her achieve her goals, Shira dedicated her Torah learning through this past year to four special people. The first three are the missing teenage boys in Israel. The fourth is a personal friend of her family, Zeli Heller, who left recently to serve in the Israeli army. May he be able to serve and protect the Jewish people and return home safely. At the end of the ceremonies, everyone was treated to a special viewing of a beautiful video montage of the past year at OCA created by Emuna Shiller, 7th grade student.

They say it’s not about the destination – it’s about the journey. I think it’s about both. I was born and raised in Old Bethpage, NY, typical Long Island suburbia. My parents were post-Depression era Jews, born of Russian parents, who made the conscious decision after marriage that kosher, to them, meant keeping a clean kitchen. Regardless, our gastronomic Judaism never lacked. There was matzo brei at Pesach every year. My parents spoke Yiddish in the home – most often when they didn’t want me to understand. I was the only one of my parents’ three daughters who chose to attend the local Reform temple and religious school. I became bat mitzvah at 13 and confirmed at 16. I sang with the temple youth choir. I loved to sing and still do. Singing was my most “spiritual” connection as a young person. It gave me a sense of purpose and gave my parents lots of nachas. At 16, I was encouraged to start classical voice lessons. My voice teacher steered me to audition for the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore for college. I was accepted and over seven years received my bachelors and masters degrees in vocal performance. While still in school, I was asked to audition to sing in the choir at Temple Oheb Shalom. I found the experience very gratifying musically, but Jewishly it was rather interesting to be the only Jew in the choir and to be singing from behind the bima, when my fellow Jews were in the congregation davening. But, the money was good! From the choir at Oheb, I was asked to audition to be a cantorial soloist for the High Holidays at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation – onwards and upwards, and the money was good. A few years later, I was on my own pulpit at Temple Beth Israel in York, PA, and most recently at a small congregation in Columbia, MD. But where was the Yiddishkeit? All wrapped up in a pretty voice! I do have to give myself some

Edible Arrangements Receives STAR-K’s Prestigious Vendor Award of Excellence By Margie Pensak

All too often in the business world it is criticism, rather than positive reinforcement, that reigns supreme. Consumers, for example, are quick to point a finger when wronged, yet slow to praise good performance. Doing its part to remedy this situation, STAR-K Certification’s recent “Award of Excellence”, presented to STAR-K certified Edible Arrangement’s franchisee, Bill Russ, recognizes model vendor performance in maintaining the highest STAR-K standards. “We often write violation or complimentary letters when it becomes necessary, but we have, until now, not offered an award for those vendors who have displayed an unusual level of cooperation and commitment,” explained STAR-K Kashrus Administrator, Rabbi Mayer Kurcfeld. “Bill consistently places Kashrus first, above all other concerns and costs.” What precipitated the recognition was a recent strawberry infestation incident, common during this time of year. To address the problem, Mr. Russ agreed to change the standing procedure for washing/agitating, doubling the amount of time and cleanser normally used. As he explained to his

staff in an office memo, this would require twice as much work and time, “However it is more important that our kosher berries be free of pests! If I hear from STAR-K that the infestation has passed, then we will try to reduce the amount of contact with soap

and water. Please stand by for further instruction and thank you for your cooperation in this.” “We not only put a stricter procedure into place for the future, Bill, on his own initiative, directed his staff to redo all the fruit arrangements that

were about to be sent out for delivery, in addition to disposing of all the problematic strawberries including even those that were already dipped with chocolate drizzle,” adds Rabbi Kurcfeld. “This was not the first time that he acted in such a manner. At the same time, it was brought to my attention that Edible Arrangements will be offering a raspberry option. After hearing that raspberries are prone to infestation and cannot be cleaned properly, according to STAR-K policy, Bill refused to sell them. I awoke at 6:00 AM on the Wednesday morning after Shavuos to my cell phone playing Mozart. It was Mrs. Leeba Braun calling to ask me if I’d like to accompany her Bais Yaakov 6th Grade Dolphin Club on a small excursion. Even in my semi-conscious state I knew one thing. When it comes to Mrs. Braun and the Dolphin Club there’s no such thing as “small”. Ordinary outings become grand events. The Dolphin Club was laid with the

Iceland Gives Peace a Chance

After tuning into the national news for one minute, it is pretty clear that America is far from a peaceful land. Americans are bombarded daily with foreign politics, domestic politics, lawsuits, terrorism threats, homicides, bankruptcy, and a rocky economy. According to the annual Global Peace Index, a complex analysis that quantifies the relative peacefulness of 162 nations, America falls just outside the top 100 most peaceful nations—at the 101st spot. The valuation is compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace. Although peacefulness has a complex meaning to every person, the data-driven assessment focuses on internal crime statistics, political forces, refugee activity, population trends, terrorism, the number of murders and economic conditions. Iceland ranked the most peaceful nation on Earth followed by Denmark and Austria. At the opposite end of the scale are South Sudan, Afghanistan, and Syria, who unsurprisingly rank the least peaceful nations. Despite still being ruled by Communism, China ranked just a few spots lower than the U.S. at 108. Israel ranked 149 due to its Israeli-Palestinian conflict and ongoing subjection to terrorism. Further down the list was Russia and North Korea, clocking in at 152 and 153 respectively.

Caver Rescued after Two Weeks Underground

Johann Westhauser was buried alive for two weeks, literally. The experienced caver entered the Riesending cave system in the Alps along with two companions to carry out research and measurements. The cave entrance is on a mountainside, 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level. Westhauser was hit in the head during a June 8th rock fall while nearly 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) underground. In a multinational rescue operation that involved more than 700 people, Westhauser was hauled out of the deep cavern. After lengthy preparations, rescue teams hauled him through a maze of narrow passages. The 52-year-old was brought to the

Spain Crowns New King

Long live the king! Spain crowned a new king last Thursday. Felipe VI was sworn in at a celebratory ceremony, wearing his military uniform displaying a sash and medals. Felipe VI was anointed after his father, Juan Carlos, renounced his leadership due to a series of scandals earlier this month. The new king waved to his supporters from the balcony of the royal palace. He was accompanied by his wife, Queen Letizia and their two daughters, Leonor and Sofia. Many dignitaries including business leaders, politicians, and athletes attended the ceremony. In a fairy-tale like moment, the royal couple arrived at the palace in an open Rolls Royce, escorted by equestrian guards with tasseled helmets. Thousands of people lined their route to the palace through Madrid, waving flags and shouting “long live

the king”. Security was tight with frequent spot checks and helicopters circulating overhead, there were reportedly 7.000 police and 120 snipers out on the streets. The advertising market makes up a huge part of our economy, and along with that, companies pay much attention to their logos. As businesses and consumers change, their logos do as well. Israel Rachel Fraenkel Begs UN to Help Locate the Three Captured Boys On Tuesday, Rachel Fraenkel,

UNESCO crowned the Beit Guvrin caves as “a Microcosm of the Land of the Caves.” “This ‘city under a city’ is characterized by a selection of man-made caves, excavated from the thick and homogenous layer of soft chalk in Lower Judea. It includes chambers and networks with varied forms and functions, situated below the ancient twin towns of Maresha and Beit Guvrin, that bear witness to a succession of historical periods of excavation and usage stretching over 2,000 years, from the Iron Age to the Crusades, as well as a great variety of subterranean construction methods,” UNESCO said in a statement. “The original excavations were quarries, but these were converted for various agricultural and local craft industry purposes, including oil presses, columbaria (dovecotes), stables, underground cisterns and channels, baths, tomb complexes and places of worship, and hiding places during troubled times.” The World Heritage List includes 1,001 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. Only countries that have signed the World Heritage convention, pledging to protect their natural and cultural heritage, can nominate a site, which must have an “outstanding universal value” to qualify.

According to Israel’s National Cyber Bureau, the Jewish State exported $3 billion worth of cyber-related products and services last year. The number represents some 5 percent of the global market and makes the country only second to the United States in cyber exports. “As far as industry goes, Israel is a superpower indeed,” Tal Steinherz, NCB chief technology officer, told participants at a June 9 session of the annual Herzliya Conference. “Our part of the international market equals the entire world apart from the United States... We’re talking 5 percent of all world exports,” he said. Itzik Ben-Israel, a retired major general who chaired a high-level task force that pushed to establish the NCB, said Israel aspires to 10 percent of the global market in less than five years. “We’re already at 5 percent. With the capabilities we have now and the programs and partnerships that are being planned, I see us realistically reaching that goal in the near term,” Ben-Israel told Defense News. In a briefing to Cabinet ministers, NCB Director Eviatar Matanya noted that Israel’s $3 billion in 2013 exports was three times that of the United Kingdom’s. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it a personal and national goal to elevate Israel’s status as a global cyber power. Since he established the NCB in 2011 — an increasingly high-priority organization that reports directly to Netanyahu’s office — the government has augmented annual cyber defense spending by 30 percent, despite a budget crisis. Israeli high school students are very tech-savvy these days. A tiny satellite, designed by a group of Israeli high school students, was launched into space this week from a site in Russia. The satellite, Duchifat 1, weighs less than a kilogram—1.9 pounds to be precise—and was developed by students at the Herzliya Science Center. Over the past two years, nearly 200 students took part in the satellite’s construction and development. Forty of the students, aged 16-17, perfected the spacecraft’s design and gave it its final touches in the last few months. Built with the help of the Israeli Space Agency in the Ministry of Science, the satellite is meant to assist in locating lost travelers in areas with no cellphone reception. Duchifat 1 is solar powered and is expected to remain in orbit for the next 20 years. The tiny space satellite was attached to a 34-ton rocket and entered orbit after the rocket was launched from the Yasny launch base in Russia. The satellite will orbit Earth at an altitude of around 370 miles above the planet’s surface at a speed of about 16,800 miles per hour, circling the entire globe every hour-and-a-half. It was launched along with other satellites from the Netherlands, Denmark, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Singapore, Ukraine and the U.S. “The launch today marks the beginning of the nano-satellite era in Israel,” said Minister of Science, Technology and Space Yaakov Peri. “The project is part of the great technological advances in space research, a field which once was exclusive only

Mothers across the nation are looking to Obama for some long-awaited news. On Monday, the president held a daylong summit to encourage employers to adopt more family-friendly policies. Ironically, the United States is one of the most premier countries in the world, but its maternity leave policies leave much to be desired. It is the only industrialized nation in the globe that doesn’t mandate paid leave for mothers of newborns. “Only three countries in the world report that they don’t offer paid maternity leave — three — and the United States is one of them,” Obama said in his weekly address. “It’s time to change that. A few states have acted on their own to give workers paid family leave, but this should be available to everyone, because all Americans should be able to afford to care for a family member in need.” Obama has been in office since January 2009. Five and a half years later, the president is addressing this issue. This summit comes at an all-important time for the president and his party. The midterm elections will focus heavily on attracting women voters, and the White House devoted a lot of star power to the summit, including inviting celebrities to the event to underscore America’s need

for formal maternity leave. California, Rhode Island and New Jersey have a system of paid leave, but it’s unclear how Obama would fund a national system. Obama has not endorsed legislation that would create one funded by a payroll tax, and he pledged in his 2008 presidential campaign not to raise taxes on families making under $250,000 a year. While some companies offer paid family leave to attract workers, the 1993 Family Medical Leave Act only requires that employers provide unpaid leave for medical and family reasons. When Obama came to the White House, he instituted six weeks of paid leave for his workers when they have a child, get sick or injured or need to care for an ailing family member, using his authority to set his staff’s compensation under the personnel code. He does not have the power to award paid leave to other federal workers without congressional action since they are covered under a different section of law. The White House has supported the goal of legislation introduced by lawmakers to change that, but it has yet to get through Congress. Despite the paid leave for White House staff, the challenges of balancing parenting and working still remain evident there. The president’s top aides include several dads of minor children but hardly any mothers with school-age kids — National Security Adviser Susan Rice being one prominent exception. “It is a very challenging and demanding environment” for parents, Valerie Jarrett, senior adviser to the president, said at a media event hosted by The Christian Science Monitor. “And I think part of what we have to achieve here is to make it easier — that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy — it’s just going to be easier. The Week Last week, the Department of Defense released the identities of the 17 people discovered onboard in 2012; their remains will finally be returned to their families for burial and full military honors. Tonja Anderson-Dell, a Tampa, Florida, resident had particular interest in the case and has been researching the crash for years. Her grandfather, Isaac Anderson, 21, was on the plane when it crashed on Nov. 22, 1952. Anderson-Dell runs a Facebook page about the crash and recovery efforts. Sadly enough, her grandfather wasn’t among the 17 people identified. “He wasn’t part of the ones that will be coming home,” she told The Associated Press. “However, I am still happy for the families that are bringing their servicemen home.” Efforts to reach the crash site immediately after the crash were halted by bad weather. Days later, Terris Moore, a member of the Fairbanks Civil Air Patrol, along with a member of the 10th Air Rescue Squadron, landed on the glacier and positively identified the wreckage as the Globemaster. Moore later told reporters the plane “obviously was flying at full speed” when it hit Mount Gannett. The Alaska National Guard discovered the wreckage in June 2012 on Colony Glacier, about 40 miles east of Anchorage. An eight-man Joint POW/ MIA Accounting Command recovered materials such as a life-support system from the wreckage and possible bones from the glacier two summers ago, and took the evidence to the command’s lab in Hawaii for analysis. The remaining 35 service members have not yet been recovered from the wreckage, and the site will be monitored for possible future recovery efforts.

Although it’s little late, an 89-year-old man was arrested in Philadelphia last Tuesday for alleged war crimes. Johann Breyer was born in Czechoslovakia to an American mother. He admits that as a teenager of 17 he joined the Waffen SS. He denies serving as a guard at Auschwitz concentration camp, a crime he has been accused of. Breyer claims he was only in a field artillery unit of the Waffen SS and deserted weeks later after serving in the area of Auschwitz, but never served as a prison guard. After World War II, Breyer emigrated to the U.S., got married, and started a normal family, putting the past behind him. In 2012, German authorities initiated an inquiry against him on suspicion that he served as a guard at one of the worst concentration camps in Ger-

“Sing Sing is a brand name,” said John Wunderlich, president of the Ossining Historical Society Museum. “You go anywhere in this country—in Europe even—everybody’s heard of Sing Sing.” The prison’s fame stems from the many criminals who ended

up there and, in some cases, never came back. They included Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were executed in 1953 on espionage charges related to passing information about the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. The prison was also the last stop for many members of the notorious of Murder Incorporated, which acted as a contract killing squad for the Mafia in the 1930s and ‘40s. And it was where prolific bank robber Willie Sutton used a makeshift ladder to escape in 1932. “It’s full of history, that’s for sure,” said Arthur Wolpinsky, a correction officer at the Sing Sing Correctional Facility since 1971 and the prison historian. “Electrocutions, riots, escape attempts. And so much has changed over the years. Inmates can have cable TV in their cells now.” A Sing Sing museum could eventually attract 250,000 people a year, supporters say. His lawyer, Dennis Boyle, told AFP that Breyer faces an extradition hearing on August 21 and was denied bail due to the severity of the charges. According to Boyle, his client spent time at a Russian prisoner-of-war camp at the end of WWII. “He denies any involvement in any war crimes whatsoever. He was never a Nazi. He was as much a victim of the Nazis as anyone else. He did not volunteer to be in the SS, he did not want to be in the SS, he deserted from the SS,” Boyle said. Boyle said his client is not in good health and appeared frail and disheveled in court after spending his first night in prison. He has a long medical history including strokes and heart problems; he also suffers from dementia. The decision of whether or not Breyer will be extradited to Germany lies in the hands of Secretary of State John Kerry.

For some commuters on a dreary Saturday morning, a ten minute subway delay turned into a car full of soul. After a train was held up for track repair, a trio of singing panhandlers in the back of the car took some time to practice some soulful ballads. Suddenly, the conductor door swung open and out walked the conductor, Mike Conklin, aka Motown Mike. “I heard these guys singing and I opened the door and said, ‘Hey do you know any Sam Cooke?’ and started singing,” Conklin, 53, recalled. “And then one guy said, ‘Wow, this guy sings,’ and another guy came out of the train and he had his mouth open like, ‘I can’t believe this guy is singing like that.’” A commuting lawyer, Ari Bayme, filmed the impromptu concert, and the video went viral. “I got a call from a friend who was like, ‘Mike, check the news. You went viral,’” Conklin said. “And I was like, ‘Viral? What is he talking about?’ I’m a little prehistoric with things like that.” “My mother used to take me to the Apollo when I was a little kid and I

Last May, police came across a young boy hiding in the French village of St. Gervais. When they asked the frightened the 12-year-old why he was hiding, the boy told them how he was abducted by a stranger and only just managed to escape. The police launched a full investigation into what happened and came to realize that… this boy just didn’t want to go to the dentist. Despite have very unclean teeth, the 12-year-old had a great mind for details. He was able to tell authorities how tall his abductor was and what he was wearing. He even “knew” what car he was driving. He told police that he was on the way to the dentist when

20 Years since the Rebbe’s Passing

What do you mean? You see, as Chabad chassidim, the Rebbe is everything. It’s not that we have our own life and then there’s also a Rebbe that we go to his tish, let’s say. To us, the Rebbe is everything. My oldest son—who is named after the Rebbe—and his friends not only know all of the Rebbe’s Torah, but they also know every detail about the Rebbe’s life; it is dear to them. You would think they were there in the 1950s. Do you think they know the Rebbe the same way you knew the Rebbe? They crave to know. When they meet anybody my age, they are like, “Tell us what it was like.” What do you think of the three new biographies that just came out? Each one covers another angle and they are very good. I like Rabbi Steinsaltz’s biography because he looks at it from the Torah prospective. I also like Chaim Miller’s biography because he took the Gutnick Chumash—he made it—and he made the Rebbe’s Torah available to others. But, you learn the most about the Rebbe through his Torah. From what I understand, when reading Rav Nachman of Breslov’s Torah, one really gets a very intimate picture of what Rav Nachman’s life and personality was like. Is the Rebbe’s Torah like that? I haven’t learned Rav Nachman’s Torah enough to have an opinion. But I could tell you a little bit about the Rebbe’s Torah. The Rebbe took Torah very seriously, every detail of it. Therefore, every neshama was taken seriously because that’s what the Torah says. From a human prospective, the Rebbe created a world of Torah through shlichus. There’s a misconception—that you come to a Chabad on some island and the guy is there to serve you coffee and some chicken soup. They don’t realize that 99.9% of the shluchim could have been the greatest roshei yeshivos and in every spare moment they are learning Torah. But the Rebbe influenced us in a way that there was no other way but to go out and help another Yid. The illustration the Rebbe used was, “When my child is drowning, everything stops to save that child.” And to the Rebbe, every Yid was that child. Was there an aspect of the Torah that the Rebbe was very focused on? The Rebbe in Torah was all encompassing. There wasn’t an aspect that the Rebbe didn’t know or didn’t take it seriously. The terminology “limud haTorah” was the most used terminology by the Rebbe, because that was the Rebbe’s life. The Rebbe talked about conquering the Jewish world “through Torah.” And that’s the only way—if you want to conquer a neshama, you do it through Torah. No matter what it is, the alef beis, daf yomi, or the deepest aspects of Torah. A shliach once took a flight with a politician to the Rebbe. When they got there, the Rebbe turned to the shliach and asked him what Torah he taught the politician on the plane. There were years when the Rebbe said, “If you want to come to me for a private audience as a chassid, if I don’t have your daily shiurim schedule as part of that note, don’t bother coming in.”

What was the Rebbe’s relationship with shluchim like? There was a unique love that the Rebbe gave to the shluchim because they could have been living in their own comfort zone and they gave it away for a greater cause. In 1992, the Rebbe suffered his first stroke on the 27th of Adar Rishon. (Interestingly, his second stroke in 1994 was also on the 27th of Adar.) That whole winter, the Rebbe cleared out his office, constantly clearing out seforim from his study to the library. The day that he had the stroke there was one thing on his desk: the four volume album of pictures of shluchim and their families around the world. When the Rebbe’s wife passed away, the Rebbe turned to his secretary and said, “Tell the children, I mean the shluchim.”

The Rebbe influenced us in a way that there was no other way but to go out and help another Yid. It must be so hard not to have the Rebbe here. At times you wish that b’gashmius the Rebbe was here. I can’t imagine all the shluchim today by a farbrengen with the Rebbe. The shluchim going out today never saw or heard the Rebbe but they hear his calling every day. We crave the Rebbe; the void is tremendous. Before my bar mitzvah, I went into the Rebbe’s study and there was an awe. The Rebbe’s eyes penetrated you. Then I got a letter from the Rebbe for my bar mitzvah, which I keep in my safety deposit box. Then you had an aliyah by the Rebbe. I remember like today how I stood near the Rebbe when I got sheini and he got shlishi. I will cherish that memory for the rest of my life. Do the videos help? Absolutely. There is a group called JEM (Jewish Education Media); their whole purpose is to document anything that ever took place by the Rebbe. There’s another group whose whole mission is to gather anything that was ever said by the Rebbe. In my house I have a full wall of seforim from the Rebbe. Did the Rebbe know where this was going; did he realize how big this was going to get? Yes. The Rebbe saw right through situations. The clarity was unbelievable. A few years ago, by the shluchim convention, a senior shliach saw the massive picture of the shluchim gathered in front of 770 and started crying. He recalled how in the late 1950s there were five bochurim who went out to shuls to say over Torah on Simchas Torah. Before they left, the Rebbe addressed them and declared, “We have to conquer the world!” The shliach paused and then said: “It’s not a legacy, it’s a vision.” It is mindboggling on every level that today before a person sends his kid to college they ask, “Where’s Chabad?” When someone goes on vacation they ask, “Where’s Chabad?” To some, it’s about ahavas Yisroel. But for others, Chabad doesn’t allow people to sin. It’s a very simple thing— a person is away from home and they need a place to call home. I know a shliach who told me that he had an individual who he recognized came for the wrong reasons. The

shliach took the guy in his car, drove him to the airport, and said, “Go back home to your wife and kids.” The Rebbe believed the world will be conquered. The Rebbe taught us that if there is a city with 1,000 Jews and we only touched 999, we have not accomplished our mission. The Rebbe lived it and breathed it. The Rebbe was very educated. Did he value secular education? There is a world of successful shluchim; do you know that the vast majority—including myself—never spent a minute on a formal secular education? The Rebbe requested on Simchas Torah in 1955 that the outreach schools should continue having secular studies but for the Chabad yeshivas, there is no secular education. Not even science and math? You can’t learn math and run a Chabad house—the numbers never match!

The day that he had the stroke there was one thing on his desk: the four volume album of pictures of shluchim and their families around the world. That is interesting because the Rebbe himself attended university, didn’t he? The Rebbe went to University of Berlin. But, Rabbi Soloveitchik was there and he recalled that “the Rebbe was there but he wasn’t there.” The Rebbe was there physically but he wasn’t there. He appreciated Torah intellectualism. He loved to connect science to Torah. There was a science professor who had tremendous correspondence with the Rebbe about science and Torah. The Rebbe was also a tremendous mathematician. The day before the Rebbe had his stroke, a professor who was in the line for dollars showed the Rebbe a replica of the beis hamikdash. The Rebbe looked at it and instantly pointed out to the professor that the mizbeiach in his model was three millimeters off. In Israel, in the 1950s, they had ships that transported people to Israel that would travel on Shabbos. They claimed that the engine could be idle for 25 hours without doing anything, so there was no chillul Shabbos. The Rebbe fought against it and said, “You could convince that to someone who is not an engineer by trade. But I’m an engineer. I studied it.” The Rebbe went on to describe in great detail how a ship engine works. What was the concept of the Rebbe giving out dollars? One of the things the Rebbe encouraged tremendously was the idea of giving tzedaka. You could say based on the Rambam that the idea of tzedaka brings the geula closer—everything about the Rebbe was the geula. When a reporter asked him what his message to the world is, he said, “We should add in goodness and kindness to bring redemption.” The whole concept that we are still in the golus didn’t sit well with the Rebbe. What was the Rebbe’s view of the role of women in Chabad? The Rebbe was revolutionary in expressing the importance of the role of

women. The Rebbe had conventions twice a year specifically for women, and he would address them in 770. The Rebbe understood that in the world of shlichus, the women play a larger role than the men do. They cook, they teach, they take care of the children, they develop programs, etc. Did the Rebbe ever give mussar? There wasn’t a concept of mussar; the Rebbe was a father. Someone once asked the Rebbe why the chassidim have pictures of him on every wall. The Rebbe said, “I love them very much, and it seems they love me, too. Just like you have multiple family pictures on the wall, it seems like that’s the way the chassidim want to have it.” There was a love between the Rebbe and us. What is the whole idea of putting notes in the Rebbe’s seforim to get answers to questions? I don’t know. People do it. I never heard it from the Rebbe. But people say it works. I’ll tell you a story: A kid once walked into my office and said, “Rabbi, translate these pages.” I started translating it for him. In the middle, he said, “Stop, I got my answer.” He said, “You just read a letter that the Rebbe wrote to someone who was not in a Chabad yeshiva and the Rebbe wrote that he should switch to a Chabad yeshiva, especially since his father went to that yeshiva.” The boy continued, “The issue that I came here to resolve is that I am contemplating whether to continue in my non-Chabad yeshiva or to go to a Chabad yeshiva. The Chabad yeshiva I want to go to is in Los Angeles, where my father went as a bochur.” He said, “I got my answer.” And the Rebbe writes in that letter to inspire others to do the same—to go to Chabad yeshivos. So I never heard of the concept from the Rebbe, but it seems to work. Since the Rebbe’s passing—I know that there is no replacement—but is there one person who is seen as the unified leader? Someone once asked the author of the book, The Rebbe’s Army, whether there will ever be another leader. The author, who is secular I believe, said, “One thing I can say with certainty—as long as there is one person who is alive who saw the Rebbe, there will never be another Rebbe.” It’s like, when someone loses a parent, can you replace that parent? Someone once came to Rav Landau in Bnei Brak and asked him, “Is the Rebbe alive?” Naturally, the Rebbe passed away. But, Rav Landau asked the man, “If your living gadol told you to pick up and move to China for life would you do it?” The man responded, “Definitely not.” Rav Landau then said to him, “There’s a family from Bnei Brak who lives today in China for life. And they volunteered to do it knowing that this is their Rebbe’s will.” Rav Landau turned to the man and said, “So whose gadol is more alive? Whose Rebbe has more influence on the people?” Is there one thing in Yiddishkeit that the Rebbe focused on more than anything else? For example, in Slabodka it was mussar, in Brisk, it was meticulousness in mitzvos, and in Breslov, it was simcha? By the Rebbe it was everything. But the overall goal was to do anything and everything to bring the geula closer. Everything was how do we hasten the coming of Moshiach. To the Rebbe, a Yid was tangible, a neshama was tangible, Moshiach was tangible.

There are many stories of miracles involving the Rebbe. Have you ever experienced any such events? When we first got here we had a storefront on Willow Avenue. I was sitting near the window—I was the showcase. A girl walks in, and she is crying and crying. When she calms down, she says that she has been dating a Jordanian diplomat’s son for almost 5 years. Her parents live in North Woodmere and are devout members of Temple Hillel, and they don’t want to let her marry him. She says, “I know Chabad is liberal, and I want you to talk to my parents.” I agreed to talk to her parents. When she left my office, I called her mother, and said, “Look, your daughter is prepared for me to help her—I’m going to help her break up.” We tried a bunch of things, but the girl was still adamant that she wanted to marry the guy. Finally, I took her to the ohel to daven. As we are driving, she told me that when she told her parents that she is going to the Rebbe’s ohel, they informed her for the first time that her two older siblings are adopted and that she is their first biological child. They told her that after not having kids for ten years, they went to the Rebbe for a bracha and she was born nine months later. I knew right then that the Rebbe’s “bracha” will not marry a goy. But nothing changed and one day she said she is going to Texas to be with her boyfriend and they were going to travel to Jordan to get married. I said to her, “The Rebbe’s ‘bracha’ will not marry a goy.” The next night at 2:00am, I got a call from the girl’s mother and she said to me, “Rabbi, I have bittersweet news—my daughter is stuck on the side of the highway in Texas. How can we get Chabad to pick her up?” I said, “What happened?” She said, “She got into an argument with her boyfriend about how she was driving, and he had her pull over to the side of the road; he dragged her out of the car and drove off!” It’s pashut— the Rebbe’s “bracha” wouldn’t marry a goy. I recall another story. When we first came here, there was a girl, Daniella, who had just been diagnosed with cancer. Her father came to me and asked what they could do. So I took her to the ohel to daven. I told her that in order for a bracha to work, you should take on a mitzvah. So I suggested that she light Shabbos candles. She started lighting Shabbos candles. When she went

back for X-rays, they found nothing. The cancer was gone. Later on, this girl moved in with a goy. The first Friday night she lit Shabbos candles and the guy said, “I don’t want this” and threw her out. This happened with three goyim—it came Friday night, she lit Shabbos candles and they threw her out! Is the reverence for the Rebbe universal in Chabad? Yes. For example, in 1991, I went to Russia for Chanukah. There was an old, Russian Jew. I noticed from a few of the things that he did that he must have come from chassidim. So we started talking and he opened up about his life as a child in Lubavitch. When I was about to leave, I said to him, “Reb Yosef, I am going back to the Rebbe, and I am going to send him a report, why don’t you write a letter to the Rebbe?” He got very serious and started crying and said, “Look, chassidim never write a letter to their Rebbe without preparing their souls first and for that you need time and energy. I am too old for it.” But he said, “Do me a favor, mention my name to the Rebbe.” I heard an amazing story from Irving Stone, who I met. He told me that in the early 1960s the shliach from Ohio brought him to New York to meet the Rebbe. He was a world renowned entrepreneur at that time. He told me that he went into the Rebbe and had an hour and a half audience with the Rebbe and he said to the Rebbe something that every fundraiser would want to hear: “Rebbe,

The Rebbe said, “You’ll give me anything?” and Irving Stone said, “Yes.” The Rebbe then said, “I would appreciate if you put on tefillin every day and if you wear tzitzis.” The Rebbe gave him tzitzis as a gift. After telling me this story, Irving Stone turned to me and said, “Our Rebbe was a smart man—the check I would have forgotten about, but 30 years later, I am still wearing tzitzis.” The work ethic that shluchim have, does that come from the Rebbe? The Rebbe taught us to put our heart and soul into what we do. I know a businessman who said that he loves hiring children of shluchim because they put their heart and soul into what they do. If you look at it from a gashmius perspective, the Rebbe was one of the greatest employers in the world. Look at this Chabad House. I’m a little guy and there are 51 people that work here! And most of them are not even Chabad, they are just Jews who have a job. Many Chabad Houses have schools, which employ teachers, staff, etc. The Rebbe created a massive network. Think about it like this: many shluchim have ten kids, they don’t have college educations, yet all of their kids end up having jobs—as shluchim! The Rebbe’s employees operate in 70 countries. Who else has that? Coca Cola doesn’t even have that. The Rebbe taught us that the world is an orchard that can grow fruit. He taught us that as a living example. We feel that message every day and are TJH driven by it. 

Did the Rebbe ever say why he never went to Eretz Yisroel? There were a few times that people asked him. First of all, he said there’s a halachic question if you are allowed to return, once you go to Eretz Yisroel. Then the Rebbe said that when a ship is sinking the captain is the last one to get off. And once the Rebbe told someone, “My shver [father-in-law] is buried here, how can I abandon him?” That person later said, “That’s a true chassid. He won’t leave his Rebbe even for a day!” But the Rebbe loved Eretz Yisroel and cried for Eretz Yisroel. He cried when land was given away. I remember at farbrengens the Rebbe cried about how many karbanos there will be for what they call “peace.” But the Rebbe’s dream was to go with Moshiach. That was his dream and he never let us go for a moment without making it a tangible reality that Moshiach is real. And, if I can say, the Rebbe reintroduced the concept of Moshiach to the world. Until then it was not even a topic of discussion. If at all, until then, people would say it’s a Christian concept. Why did the Rebbe reintroduce it? Because it is part of Torah. It is the ultimate part of Torah, which is all “lehavi l’mos haMoshiach [to bring to the days of Moshiach].”

The Fashionable German Colony

villages in Germany. The community was comprised of one- and two-story farmhouses with green shutters, red tile roofs and fenced-in gardens, using local Jerusalem stone instead of the traditional wood and brick materials. The German Templers lived in the neighborhood until the middle of World War II, and in 1943 the British government deported the Templers as enemy aliens and Nazi sympathizers. In 1948, the German Colony became home to new olim and quickly became a prominent community due to its prime location coupled with its attractive homes and lush greenery. The neighborhood received a big development boost in 1892 when the city’s main railroad station was constructed next to what is now Liberty Park (Gan Hapa’amon). The railroad station was used for over a hundred years until it finally closed in 1998,

at which point the city’s main train station was relocated to Malcha, near the well-known Malcha Mall. Recently, the old train station was given a new lease on life when it was renovated and renamed “First Station.” It has become a hub of cultural and recreational activities, as well as the home of countless fine restaurants. After the State of Israel was established, the neighborhood was renamed Rambam in memory of the preeminent philosopher and scholar Maimonides, but – as was the case with a number of Jerusalem neighborhoods such as Baka, whose official name is Geulim, and Katamon, whose official name is Gonen – the new Hebrew name Rambam was never accepted by the public. Today, the neighborhood is called “Hamoshava HaGermanit” or “Hamoshava” for short. In order to preserve the German Colony’s charm, in 1973 the neighborhood was declared a historical site. This landmark designation limited the ability to destroy the older buildings, and as a result, many of the original homes have been restored, which has helped retain the community’s unique character.

Then we would enter the home and take the suspect with us, saying that we wanted him for interrogation. Usually they came without a struggle. Once in the car we told the prisoner who we were and why we took him. Some admitted guilt. Others kept silent. We did the job.” Most of the squads that entered the

tration Camp, he knew that he was a position to do something. Countries and armies are subjected to rules and regulation, therefore Nazi hunters acted on their own accord to mete out punishment. Carmi started a group called the TTG Bridage, Tilhas Tizig Gesheften, to hunt Nazis, their collaborators and help the Haganah in any way possible. Handpicked members of the Jewish Brigade comprised this group and they began operations in the summer of 1945. The group got started when Carmi heard of a Gestapo officer who bullied and stole from Jews in Italy. He selected a group of men and, dressed in British uniforms, raided the house of the officer. After finding a hoard of treasures stolen from Jewish families, a huge list of SS and Gestapo officers was also discovered. Carmi gave some of those on the list to an intelligence unit but kept the list of the notorious Nazis for himself. With the help of the Jewish Brigade and Haganah, he went to Germany armed with information to track down these murderers. With orders coming from Tel Aviv, the unit did their work silently under the code name Operation Judgment.

They did what they had to do and as one member put it, they were a “very unorthodox outfit.” They deposed of an unknown number of Nazis in this fashion, and the British Army turned a blind eye their activities. In addition to the Nazi hunting, TTG also trained thousands of refugees in

warfare and sent them to the Holy Land with arms stolen from the Brits. The British Eighth Army knew what was going on and still chose not to stop them for a variety of reasons, mostly based on humanitarian ideologies. For example, the group went into a DP camp and sent two truckloads of orphaned children onto ships headed for Palestine. Soon those two truckloads became a dozen and Palestine became a destination even though the British government as a whole hated the idea and did what they could to stop the immigration. Many long months of hard work eventually paid off and soon Carmi and the TTG went back to Israel. In 1947, the British announced that they were leaving Israel, and the Jews began to prepare for the inevitable war with their very unfriendly Arab neighbors. The arms smuggled out of Europe proved vital in the early days of the IDF and many of people who were sent by the TTG to Israel joined the Israeli Army. Carmi became an officer in the army and served with distinction. He had served his country and fellow Jews with bravery and brought to justice many people who otherwise would have gotten away with their crimes. Nazi hunting was no pretty business but it needed to be done. Early hunters like the TTG and Carmi will be remembered and celebrated for their service. s the Holocaust was ravaging Europe, many Jews sought a way to help their fellow brethren. One dressed up as a Nazi officer and went on the streets of Budapest, Hungary, handing out passports to get fellow Jews out of the country. Many others joined armies that were fighting conventional battles. The toughest of these men escaped Nazi-held Europe before the war and were burning with revenge. So many Jews in Palestine (it wasn’t called Israel until 1948) wanted to join the British Army that the Jewish Brigade was formed and special units were created for the best of these men. Israel Carmi was one of these soldiers and after the war became the most feared Nazi hunter in Europe. Israel Carmi was born Israel Weinman in Danzig which was a semi-autonomous state in the 1920s. In 1934, at the age of 17, he immigrated to then-Palestine and joined a kibbutz. As an adventurous youth he was recruited into the Haganah in 1936 and entered the Palestine Police Force and faced Arab uprisings. Two years later, he joined the elite Special Night Squad formed by non-Jewish British General Orde Wingate to deal with the Arab revolt and was given a medal for his contributions to the unit. When he married in 1939, Carmi told his wife that he would settle down and not take up arms but that all changed with the issue of the White Papers and he joined a unit dedicated to preventing the Brits from stopping the Haganah. Before the creation of the Jewish Brigade, some Jews from Palestine were allowed to enter the British Army and Carmi became a sergeant in a unit nicknamed the Buffs. In reality, he joined the Brits with orders from the Haganah to “requisition” arms for other purposes. He was part of the Palestine Regiment and took part of the pitched battle against the Germans in Benghazi. Carmi was so upset when his commander ripped down an Israeli flag and put up a British one instead that he led a mutiny. The Palestine Regiment was a mix of Jews and Arabs fighting for the British and soon so many Jews wanted to volunteer that the Jewish Brigade was formed. After joining the Jewish Brigade in 1944, Carmi began to act on behalf of his Haganah superiors. They were inter-

A Parsha Thought Chukas: Building Up, Tearing Down Rabbi Shmuel Silber

“The entire congregation of the children of Israel arrived at the desert of Zin in the first month, and the people settled in Kadesh. Miriam died there and was buried there. The congregation had no water; so they assembled against Moses and Aaron. The people quarreled with Moses, and they said, “If only we had died with the death of our brothers before the Lord. Why have

you brought the congregation of the Lord to this desert so that we and our livestock should die there?” (Bamidbar 20:1-4) The Talmud explains that in Miriam’s merit a flowing spring followed the Jewish people during their sojourn in the desert. Upon Miriam’s death the spring vanished, creating panic within the ranks of the nation. God instructed Moshe to take his staff and together with Aharon speak to the rock and bring forth sufficient water for the people and their flocks. “Moshe took the staff from before God, as He instructed him. Moshe and Aharon assembled the community before the rock; [Moshe] said to them, “Listen, you rebels! Can we extract water from this rock for you”? And Moshe raised his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice; water rushed out abundantly, and the community and their livestock drank.” (Bamidbar 20:9-11).

At first glance it would appear that the problem was solved – water flowed freely and in great abundance. However, Moshe had disobeyed the Divine directive. Moshe struck the rock twice whereas God commanded him to speak to it. “God said to Moshe and Aharon, “Because you did not believe in Me to sanctify Me in the presence of Bnei Yisroel; therefore, you will not bring this congregation into the land that I have given them.” (Bamidbar 20:12). The commentaries struggle to comprehend this tragic episode. The punishment does not seem to fit the “crime.” Does this “transgression” warrant the severe and irrevocable punishment of non-entry into the Land of Israel? Moshe gave up everything for the nation. Moshe led a selfless life of service to the collective and the only thing he desired was to enter the Land and yet, because of one mistake this dream will simply vanish? Is there some deeper insight into this mistake of Moshe Rabbeinu? The great Chassidic leader, Rav Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev (1740-1810) advances a meaningful idea. The Rebbe explains that there are two different ways to encourage people to engage in comprehensive, cathartic change. The first approach is to build and bolster a person’s sense of self. Remind the individual how special he or she really is. Remind them of their strengths, potential and abilities. Remind him that his neshoma (soul) was carved out from beneath the Divine Throne. Remind her that no matter what she has done – there is so much good and beautiful holiness contained within, that is desperate to come out. By “building up” the individual, a person is reminded that they need not be defined by their past actions or current reality. It is this realization that serves as the motivation for growth and change. The second approach is to force the individual to confront the harsh realities regarding his/her faults and shortcomings. This approach focuses on the person’s deficiencies. A person feels so ashamed of what they have done that they feel compelled to change and rehabilitate their identity. The Rebbe explains that when Moshe said to the people, “Listen you rebellious ones” he was trying to help them acknowledge and take responsibility for their negative behavior. Moshe was trying to explain that every time they “acted out” – it was a trespass against God. The real issue was their inability to accept authority and bend

their collective knee before God. Moshe felt the only way the people would change was if they owned their shortcomings and deficiencies. He reacted sharply and angrily with them with the hope they would see how far they had fallen and would take the necessary actions to rehabilitate their spiritual personality. With this approach, hitting the rock was necessary for when a person does not live in sync with God, the physical world does not cooperate. If they were indeed rebellious, the rock won’t give forth water with speech - it will only do so through compulsion. But that is not what Hashem desired. By telling Moshe to speak to the rock God was telling Moshe, ‘build them up and remind them of their potential. Encourage them, love them, and embrace them.’ God understood that the Jewish people had suffered many set-backs of late. Between plagues, spies and rebellions there was much national and personal trauma. The nation had begun to think and feel they were not worthy. In the midst of this current crisis Moshe was expected to encourage the nation through positive reinforcement and enable them to change their behavior for the better. Moshe was to help nurture a healthy sense of self and enable the people to believe in themselves again. If Moshe would have taken this approach, speaking to the rock would have been sufficient, as nature is ready and willing to accommodate those who live within the purview of the Divine Will. The mistake of Moshe Rabbeinu was in his failure to “build up” the people and make them realize they could break this cycle of negative behavior by cultivating their capacity for greatness. The failure to bolster and positively reinforce their inherent good was an unforgivable offense in the eyes of God. This concept is not just applicable in how we relate to others but it is also important for how we relate to ourselves. Sometimes, the greatest obstacle to growth is the feeling that I am beyond salvation – I’m damaged goods. We each have faults and shortcomings. We each have deficiencies and challenges. But we also have so much good inside that is yearning to spring forth. True we have sinned – but we have accomplished much and deep down our desire is to do more and be more. We dare not define ourselves by our failures and faults. It is much more productive to build than destroy. This rings true in our relationship with others and with our selves.

How to Do It: Take the Styrofoam cup and place a cupcake inside. Frost the top of the cupcake and then sprinkle the colored sugar to resemble a snow cone. Insert plastic spoon for the perfect finishing touch.

How to Do It: Cut brownies into rectangles. Insert popsicle sticks into one of the short sides of the brownie. Using the icing and sprinkles, decorate the brownies to resemble your favorite ice cream pop. Let harden before serving.

Good for Nothing

fter the publication of my book, I gave a copy to R’ Paysach Krohn, who was kind enough to discuss it with me during the planning stages. In return, he gave me a CD of one of his talks. It wasn’t necessary, but out of appreciation for his gift, I listened to it right away. In it, he shared a fascinating thought that resonated with me. He quoted Rebbetzin Kanievsky, zichrona l’vracha, who said this in the name of her fatherin-law, the Steipler Gaon zt”l. The idea is that a person has a certain amount of suffering, aggravation, and grief in this life. When he shares someone else’s burden, feeling pained for what his friend is going through, that qualifies as his own suffering. This means that being empathetic can greatly improve our own lives and save us from troubles and travails. I was amazed by how kind and benevolent the Al-mighty is, but when I shared this with some friends, one person responded in what I felt was a very negative way. His response was that it was “stupid.” Now that we know this, instead of feeling bad when someone else suffers, we’ll rejoice because we’re saving ourselves from pain. We’re defeating the purpose, according to his logic, and making the recipient even more beleaguered than before because nobody will truly “care.” He made the case that we should be empathetic simply because it’s the right thing to do, essentially stating that if we are rewarded by having our own suffer



ing reduced we lose the mitzvah. I tried to counter that of course we are discussing someone truly sharing the other person’s burden, and that the benefit is solely in the background. As I thought more about it, though, I wasn’t sure it had to be that way at all. There’s a story about a boy who

went to church. He saw the priest there and asked his father who paid him. His father responded that nobody paid him. He lived at the church and helped people simply because he wanted to help. The little boy responded, “So you mean the priest is good for nothing?” While a gadol ha’dor, the leader of a generation like Moshe or Shmuel, had to lead without being paid, the rest of us do not have to live on that level. In fact, we are not encouraged to live on that level. Yes, we do want to do mitzvos and learn Torah l’shma, simply for the sake of the mitzvah, but when it comes to other people, we prefer that the kindness be done with ulterior motives than not be done at all. R’ Yochanan famously explained to his nephew the posuk “Aser ta’aser, you shall surely tithe,” to mean, “Aser

tic and caring about another is so that we emulate Hashem Who is completely a giver. However, if we don’t care for others until we are completely selfless, it will never happen. How do you learn to be charitable if you don’t give charity? The way to get ourselves in the habit is to do it, and we give ourselves the incentive to do so by recognizing how it benefits us. Tzedaka saves one from death, doing business with a talmid chacham is a segulah for getting a good shidduch, spending money on nice food for Shabbos and Yom Tov has that money returned to you, and empathizing with another saves you suffering because Hashem wants us to do those things. There’s an old parable about a town whose water was muddy and after tasting a cup of tea they offered him, the local noble spit it out and told them they must filter and boil the water before they use it. When there was a fire, the town burned down because they were first cleaning the water. He cried, “I meant you should clean it before you make a cup of tea, but when there’s a fire, you use whatever you have on hand!” So, too, when people are in trouble and need us to lend a hand or simply an ear, if knowing we get some benefit will make us quicker to do it, then by all means, it’s worth it. Hashem has no problem rewarding us to do good, and much of our beliefs are based on

that. If we were to hold off on taking action until we were purely motivated, we would find ourselves helping much less, rationalizing that we can’t help because it will detract from our own needs in some way. That’s why Hashem gives us so many chances to do good and enjoy benefits at the same time. The intent is that we help others, not merely sanitize ourselves until we can help them without a thought to our own desires. Even were we to reach that point, it would likely be only short lived because our natural instincts would kick in and one can only keep that behavior up for so long. In essence then, despite what my friend suggested, if we don’t act right away when others need help, we’re simply good for nothing. much choice about which restaurants to eat at. Of course, we had a few falafel joints, Australian cuisine (which is meat pies), and even a traditional fish and chips shop. No pizza shops—can you imagine?! So if you wanted Chinese, you made your own. If you wanted Mexican, you made your own. I love international cuisine.

Fish Quesadillas Ingredients 1 pkg flour or corn tortilla 1 jar salsa 1 pkg shredded mozzarella cheese 2 lbs. flounder Cumin powder, to taste Garlic powder, to taste Salt Pepper Butter Preparation Season flounder with garlic powder, cumin, salt and pepper, and sear on a well-oiled grill pan for a few minutes on each side until cooked through. Fish may break apart, but that is okay. Once it’s cooked, set aside. On one tortilla, spread salsa to cover the whole surface. Take a handful of cheese and spread over the salsa. Place fish over the cheese then cover with another plain tortilla, making a sandwich. On medium heat, melt some butter on a 9-inch sauté pan. Once butter has melted, place tortilla on it and cook for a few minutes on each side until the cheese has melted and the outside is slightly brown. Slice into wedges like a pizza. Serve with guacamole, sour cream or salsa.

Mexican is my favorite. Fish is always a challenge to get children to eat it. But this recipe makes that job so much easier! It takes the fun of eating Mexican food and makes it a bit healthier. Note: If you want to use Pam instead of butter, you can do the switch easily.

My Favorite Mexican Guacamole Ingredients 3 avocados – peeled, pitted, and mashed 1 lime, juiced 1 tsp, salt ½ cup diced onion 3 TBS chopped fresh cilantro 2 Roma (plum) tomatoes, diced 1 tsp. minced garlic 1 pinch ground cayenne pepper, optional Preparation In a medium bowl, mash together the avocados, lime juice, and salt. Mix in onion, cilantro, tomatoes, and garlic. Stir in cayenne pepper. Refrigerate 1 hour for best flavor, or serve immediately.
