Dear Readers, A lot has gone on in the world since our last issue--unfortunately not in a positive sense. We learned of the horrible murder of the three Israeli teenagers, Gil-Ad Shaer, Eyal Yifrah, and Naftali Frankel. No words can adequately describe the magnitude of this tragedy. Hamas terrorists have fired hundreds of rockets at Israel’s civilians over the last few days. Operation Protective Edge is in full force. Thousands of reserves have been called. Quite frankly it’s scary what is going on in Israel. It’s hard to look at the news and not get the chills. We all have family and friends that either live in Israel or are studying in Yeshiva there. As much as it should always hit home, when it is your friends and family who are going into bomb shelters because of rockets being launched, it has a far greater impact. Because this is on all of our minds, we have devoted the cover story to the current unrest in Israel. It is equally important to read Rabbi Silber’s Dvar Torah this week; I believe the message is a very relevant one to internalize during these tumultuous times. All we can do is continue to daven to our Father in Heaven that our brothers and sisters 6000 miles away stay safe and that we should merit to see Mashiach speedily in our times.

Over 600 Come to commemorate the 20th Yartzheit of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, zt’l Over 600 people gathered at Shriver Hall – Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland, for an uplifting evening on Sunday, commemorating the 20th yartzheit of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, zt’l. A joint effort of all the local shluchim in the Greater Baltimore area, the evening opened with an exclusive VIP reception, where the event sponsors had an opportunity to meet personally with the guest speaker and enjoy a variety of hors d’oeuvres, fine wine and desserts. The speakers included Rabbi Shmuel Kaplan, Regional Director of Chabad of Maryland, Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb Executive Vice President Emeritus of the Orthodox Union who related his personnel story of the Rebbe that changed his life and focused

on the Rebbe’s ‘gadlus’ and unique contribution to Torah knowledge. Mr. Dennis Prager, nationally syndicated radio talk show host, columnist, author, and speaker addressed the Rebbe’s impact in changing the face of traditional Judaism and making it relevant to the times we live in. The speakers were followed by a musical tribute performed by members of the Peabody Conservatory. The music of the nigunnim played was written special for the event by local ‘anash’ member and composer Jared Weissbrot. The evening concluded with the moving film “Marching Orders” produced by JEM. On their way out, everyone received a copy of the beautiful Rebbe magazine produced by the Shluchim Office.

On Sunday, June 29th, Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, the Bais HaMedrash and Mesivta of Baltimore was pleased to welcome parents, grandparents, and

honored as valedictorian and he delivered an address on behalf of his classmates. Each bochur received his diploma as well as the sefer Meshech Chochmah with a note from the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Zvi Dov Slanger, inside. The afternoon concluded with divrei bracha from Rabbi Yaakov Herskovitz, a well-known maggid shiur here in Baltimore and a grandparent of a graduate. It was the perfect finishing touch to the joyous day. Rabbi Herskovitz encouraged the bochurim to appreciate the general knowledge they acquired in high school and wished them well as they continue on to their bais medrash years. He

extended family to the yeshivaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual Graduation and Siyum. The milestone event drew participation from parents as far away as Detroit, Chicago, and Atlanta. In all, more than 70 family members joined in the simcha. From the moment the program began there was a sense of accomplishment in the air. With more than 100 bochurim completing Mesechtos

Kesuvos and Sotah, the nachas evident on the faces of the parents and rebbeim and the joy that the bochurim felt spoke volumes of the proficient level of learning that the bochurim have achieved. One bochur from each class was selected to be mesaiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;yem for his shiur, and 12th grade graduate Yeshai Marks was chosen to recite the Hadran. Following the siyumim, Master of Ceremonies Rabbi Shalom Salfer introduced the guest speaker Rabbi Dovid Heber, Rav of Khal Ahavas Yisroel Tzemach Tzedek. Rabbi Heber applauded the accomplishments of the bochurim and graduates, as well as encouraged them to continue in their upright ways. He explained that the reason that most mesechtos start off seemingly in the middle of a topic or with a difficult sugya is to emphasize the need to learn from a rebbe. The great mesorah of learning that is handed down from the Rosh Yeshiva and rebbeim ensures the proper understanding of the Gemara. It was about caring for the vulnerable, deepening Jewish life and developing a global peoplehood. That’s what the approximately 330 people who came out to The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore’s Annual Meeting were reminded of as they celebrated the accomplishments of The Associated during the past year. During this year’s Annual Meeting, which also honored Howard Friedman for his successful two-year term as Chairman of the Board of The Associated, the attendees learned that the 2014 Annual Campaign — expected to reach $30 million, according to Campaign Co-Chair Michele Lax – continued to meet the needs of the Jewish community in Baltimore and around the world. Speaking about the past year, Linda A. Hurwitz, Chair of Community Planning and Allocations, recounted several of those accomplishments.

More than 1,300 job seekers of all ages and abilities, half of whom had significant barriers to entry, turned to Jewish Community Services for career services. Approximately 20,000 individuals in the community used the Baltimore Jewish Abilities Alliance (BJAA) website, which provides resources, programs, events and forms for families whose loved ones have disabilities. In addition, CHAI: Comprehensive Housing Assistance, Inc., celebrated its first anniversary of Northwest Neighbors Connecting, a village community to help seniors remain in their homes, and the Jewish Community Center, along with the Macks Center for Jewish Education, educated Baltimore’s Jewish learners. Beth Goldsmith, Co-chair of The Associated’s Israel and Overseas Committee, announced that The Associated distributed more than $1 million in grants to organizations that help strengthen the bond between

Baltimore and Ashkelon, Baltimore’s partner city. At the same time, The Associated worked locally to advocate

for the Jewish State. In fact, this year, the Baltimore Jewish Council was successful in ensuring that Maryland passed the country’s only language reaffirming

Maryland’s Declaration of Cooperation with Israel, opposing Maryland public institutions’ support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and condemning the American Studies Association (ASA) boycott against only Israeli institutions. When the crisis erupted in the Ukraine, The Associated made Annual Campaign funds available, as well as raised additional funds, to add heightened security measures for Jewish institutions and provide a life line to the vulnerable in Odessa. The evening culminated with the honoring of Friedman, who then passed the gavel on to Mark D. Neumann. Neumann, who spoke about the role of The Associated in taking care of the vulnerable, ensuring Jewish education and advocating for Israel, will serve as Chair of the Board for the next two years.

N’shei Agudath Israel of Baltimore is dedicated to providing women in our community with quality programs to strengthen themselves, their homes, and their families. N’shei funds several important initiatives when possible, including Bnos youth activities. Bnos groups provide children throughout Baltimore with quality, wholesome programming on Shabbos afternoons,

as well as at other special events. N’shei schedules halacha and hashkafa shiurim, including our annual Teshuva and Pesach shiurim given by Rabbi Heinemann. N’shei sponsors an annual medical symposium where medical and Rabbinic experts educate our community about important health issues. N’shei officially welcomes women new to the Baltimore community at the annual Newcomers Night. Many more exciting events are being planned for the coming year. She was the wife and helpmate of the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Yaakov Weinberg, and was the initiator of many important programs, including Bikur Cholim and CHANA. Nshei considered her an important advisor, speaker and consultant. We really miss her, and it is fitting to dedicate an evening such as this one to her memory. Soul Music Concert Benefits Etz Chaim Center By Ruth Hyman

On Sunday, June 29th, over 180 women from across the religious spectrum gathered at the Owings Mills JCC’s Gordon Center for the Performing Arts for a very special concert benefitting Baltimore’s Etz Chaim Center for Jewish Living and Learning. An elegant reception sponsored by Larry and Lara Franks of Accents Grill preceded the performance, featuring an enticing array of chocolate desserts and artfully arranged fruit, topped off with bubbly champagne. Cheers! Performing were the extraordinarily talented Shari Rosen, soprano; Rivki Silver, clarinetist; and Andrea Sokol-Albert, pianist. All three women are masters of their craft, professionals trained at the highest level. Religious observance can present Rivky Silver, Andrea Sokol-Albert and Shari Rosen

obstacles for women who perform publicly—most particularly so for singers. For years soprano Shari Rosen, a returnee to Jewish observance, had dreamed of creating an event for women, by women, where she would be able to let her vocal gifts fly. This was the night! Thanks to a very generous grant from the Gordon Foundation, the hall at the Gordon Center was a most fitting venue for this event, with its light-filled, spacious lobby and generous auditorium. A Steinway Concert Grand Piano graced the stage, waiting. The audience took their seats, and after a few words of welcome from Etz Chaim’s Rabbi Nitzan Bergman, patiently awaited the main event. At once, Andrea Sokol-Albert, Shari Rosen, and Rivki Silver walked from the wings out onto the stage in classic formal gowns, their stage presence a taste of great things to come. A collective intake of breath from the audience and a feeling of excitement rippled through the hall. Then it began. The first piece, Schubert’s “The Shepherd on the Rock” lieder, set the tone for the evening, with each artist’s passion and talent shining

through brilliantly. The three artists performed as one. The program was varied, with something to suit nearly every taste, representing composers across time. After the Schubert piece Ms. Sokol-Albert gave a magnificent rendition of several Gershwin favorites, followed by Ms. Silver’s soulful interpretation of Bach’s Suite No.1. Avinu Malkeinu and My Yiddishe Momme were next, deftly crafted by Ms. Rosen and accompanied by Ms. Sokol-Albert. The program’s grand conclusion, with all three artists, was Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev’s beloved “Dudele,” in a wonderful arrangement by Ms. Silver. This rousing finale had the audience clapping along with the rhythm of the piece, heightening the already strong sense of unity. Splendid! It was truly an amazing and delightful evening. Those who attended were so glad they did. Those who were not able to attend missed a marvelous evening. Only one regret—it was over far too soon!

Sunday, 8th of Tammuz, Yeshivas Chofetz Chaim -Talmudical Academy of Baltimore had its very successful Avos U’Bunim summer learning event. The Beis Medrash was full with the beautiful sounds of Kol torah as fathers and sons (we even had some pre 1A talmidim participate) learned

up a storm. Afterwards the fathers and sons enjoyed an hour and a half of swim time in Talmudical Academy’s own pool. The diving board and slide were in constant use as the boys (and their fathers) appreciated the 225,000 gallon pool!

YKY/TI Pre-1a Visits Pearlstone Center for a Hands-On 39 Melachos Trip By Sara Gross, A YKY/TI Parent

On June, 17th, after learning the 39 melachos of Shabbos, Morah Tova Baer’s pre-1a class took a fabulous trip to the Pearlstone Center farm to watch and perform some of the melachos. The Torah Institute boys applied their knowledge of the melachos of haKotzer (harvesting), haDosh

(threshing), haBorer (selecting), haTochen (grinding), and many more. With fascination, the boys experienced the actual melachos in their natural state, and enjoyed an exciting visit with the farm animals at the same time. The boys loved being outdoors, and seeing 5 acres of growing vegetables, herbs, orchards, vineyards, and two greenhouses. They were thrilled by the dairy goat herd and free range chicken flock. As one wide-smiled pre-1a boy exclaimed, “This was a great trip! My favorite part was petting the goats!” Seeing the agriculture and actually performing the melachos they learned so much about, was a tremendously enlightening and exciting experience for the boys, imprinting these lessons forever in their minds. The program director of the Pearlstone Center, Morris Panitz, said, “We’re thrilled we had the opportunity to provide hands-on learning on the farm. I must say that I was particularly impressed with the students’ abilities to name the melachos, as we were threshing, winnowing, and grinding the wheat.” The boys made a true Kiddush H-shem with their strong under-

standing of the complicated melachos, which were taught so carefully by their capable teachers. The Pearlstone Center staff was eager to get involved in educating the young boys, and enthusiastically provided them with this valuable opportunity to see their lessons come to life. Yakir Manela, executive director of the Pearlstone Center, said, “We are proud to work with Baltimore Jewish day schools, shuls, and other organizations across the Jewish community in order to provide dynamic, innovative Jewish education. We hope that our

Reflections on Attending Culinary School W

hen people learn that I am going to college for my bachelor’s in Culinary Sustainability and Hospitality they almost always ask, “How does that work?” referring to my being an Orthodox, kosher-observing Jew who attends a non-kosher culinary program. Thank G-d, the university I attend, Kennesaw State University, has been both very understanding and accommodating of my religious principles and kosher standards—and the best part is that everyone learns something in the process. I, for one, have found it necessary to brush up on my knowledge of the Torah prohibition of cooking meat and dairy products together and all of its intricacies. To my surprise, many of my instructors and classmates seem to appreciate learning more about the subject of kashruth as well. I am currently taking a class called “Spirits, Beers, & Brews” in which I am learning about the history and production of distilled alcoholic beverages (gin, whiskey, beer, etc.). A portion of this class is dedicated to tasting the beverages we are learning about and trying to recognize and appreciate their unique ingredients and subtle flavors. While I provided the instructor for this class a list of approved kosher liquors and beers, he took it upon himself to do more research and took the time to study the kosher liquor guides made by the Star-

K, CRC, and AKC kosher certifying agencies. Having been given a list of the drinks to be tasted in class prior to the class’s commencement, I am well aware that the instructor also made a special effort to purchase liquors that I could taste (like Slivovitz, Amaretto Disarano, Godiva, Glenmorangie…and the class isn’t over yet) and not feel left out of the tasting experience. My fellow classmates seem to be learning a little about the concept of kashruth as well. I found it very funny one day in class when the instructor mentioned that one of the whiskeys we would be tasting was aged in a sherry cask (which makes the beverage not kosher), and a classmate then pointed out, “So Alex can’t have that one.” In some of my other culinary-based classes, my instructors and I have figured out ways I can participate fully while still being able to strictly adhere to kashruth laws. In my “World Cuisines & Cultures” class, I was able to learn about various world cuisines in class and while my classmates were able to taste the fare of various cuisines in class, I would come home and prepare various international delicacies…or eat out at a restaurant of that respective cuisine (thank G-d for South American and Middle Eastern kosher restaurants in Atlanta). I remember thinking to myself when eating at the first restaurant for my homework, “How awesome

is it that I get to eat out at restaurants for my homework?!” I even got to go to a kosher restaurant on a field trip with my “Plant Based Cuisine” class, where we dined out with a vegan perspective (ordering only vegan friendly dishes) at Fuego Mundo, Atlanta’s coolest kosher restaurant. I was very happy that my instructor for that class made the effort to include me in the dining experience and ensure I was able to participate in the experience fully. I feel very privileged that I am able to see G-d’s involvement in my academic studies (in addition to all other aspects of my life, as well). To be able to study for a degree in something that I am really passionate about and to do so close to home and at a school that is so accommodating to my religious requirements, nonetheless, it truly the amazing work of the hand of G-d. I also found the program, after struggling to pick a major, by randomly searching “Kennesaw State” on Google and finding and joining the brand new, innovative program during its second semester (I’m one of the guinea pigs), so I feel that I am being guided in the right direction, educationally. What really underscores G-d’s involvement is how accommodating the school and my instructors have been, making sure that I feel welcome and comfortable participating in classes as the sole kosher student.

Your Health Mouth and Body Connection Relationship of Gum Disease with Diabetes and Heart Disease By Dr. Martin Leybovich, D.D.S., M.S.D., Board Certified Periodontist

Periodontal disease or periodontitis, commonly referred to as gum disease, is found in one in every two adults age 30 and older. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 64.7 million Americans are affected by periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can lead to receding gums, bone damage, and loss of teeth. Additionally, it has been linked to other systemic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, pre-term birth and adverse pregnancy outcomes, obesity, and prostatitis. Periodontal disease typically does not cause pain until it reaches its advanced stages, at which point much of the damage has been done and tooth support destroyed. Despite its prevalence, periodontal disease is hardly ever discussed, resulting in a lack of urgency for people to properly care for their gums. Therefore, it is the goal of this article to enlighten readers with understanding what gum disease is and how it relates to two of the most common systemic conditions: diabetes and heart disease. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition caused by bacterial plaque that forms beneath the gum line. As bacterial plaque accumulates, it causes damage to the (1) gum tissue surrounding the tooth and its (2) underlying bone; these are the two constituents surrounding a tooth that hold the tooth in place. When examining a patient for periodontal disease, a probe is utilized to measure a naturally formed space between the gum and tooth called a probing depth or a pocket depth (Figure 1). In health, a probing depth of one, two, or three millimeters (mm) is normal. If the probing depth reaches a measurement of 4 mm, then it is the beginning of gum disease, but generally still in its reversible state of gingivitis. When the measurement between the gum and the tooth reaches 5 mm or beyond, then an actively occurring irreversible periodontal disease condition has begun. The deeper the probing depth, the more bone loss is found underneath the gum tissue. As the loss of attachment of both gum and bone progresses, the tooth may become loose and reach a point where nothing can be done to save the tooth. Ultimately, periodontal treatment is focused on eliminating deep probing depths so that the bone loss does not progress and the tooth can be maintained.

Over the years, as research in the periodontal field has advanced, a topic termed periodontal medicine has become prevalent. It refers to the association of systemic diseases and conditions that have been documented to have an asso-

The conditions with the strongest association with periodontal disease are diabetes and heart disease. Diabetes is a metabolic disease that manifests itself as an elevation of sugar in the blood beyond normal limits. There are many physical systemic consequences in patients with increased blood sugar, one of which is the susceptibility to periodontal disease. In addition to the five cardinal complications in diabetic patients, researchers have termed periodontal disease as its 6th complication. It has also been shown that there is a bidirectional relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease, whereby patients with diabetes are more prone to periodontal destruction and patients with periodontal disease are more prone to diabetes. In addition, diabetic patients that control one’s blood sugar can improve their periodontal disease, and similarly by treating periodontal disease, patients can improve their diabetes. The underlying mechanism is the inflammatory nature of the two diseases. Furthermore, research has revealed that one of the long term markers for diabetes control, one’s

HbA1C can be improved by 0.4%, which often is equated with a second drug for diabetes control. The most common forms of heart disease associated with periodontal disease have been atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. These refer to heart diseases where there is a thickening of blood vessel walls due to the build-up of an atheromatous plaque. Atheromatous plaques are caused from by-products of an increased inflammatory response at the blood vessel wall which includes high cholesterol. As the blood vessel wall thickens, the blood vessel elasticity is lost and consequently its pressure increases. The atherosclerotic plaque may thicken over time and remain dormant for years. However, at a certain point, it may rupture and within 5 minutes, it may cause a blockage of a blood vessel. If the blockage occurs in blood vessels of the heart, then one may suffer a heart attack, if it occurs in blood vessels in the brain, one may suffer a stroke. The relationship between heart disease and periodontal disease, as in diabetes, is focused on the chronic inflammatory nature of the two diseases, where periodontal disease has been found to be independently linked to the development or progression of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, research has focused on oral bacterial plaque components and their by-products, traveling through the bloodstream and becoming part of an atheromatous plaque that is formed in blood vessels. Recommendations for patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes or atherosclerotic heart disease or those that have risk factors for these diseases: There is a higher tendency of actually having periodontal disease. If you have been told by your dentist that you have gum disease or periodontal disease, you should follow up with the necessary treatment. This may require several appointments. Like diabetes and heart disease, periodontal disease is a chronic condition and requires lifelong maintenance. You must clean your teeth and gums very carefully at home. If left untreated, periodontal disease will lead to tooth loss and may also make your diabetes harder to control or aid in the progression of heart disease. You must understand that severe gum disease may be present and get worse

with no apparent symptoms. Therefore, even if your dentist has told you that you do not have gum disease now, you should still get regular dental checkups as part of managing your diabetes and heart disease. If you do not have diabetes or heart disease, but present with risk factors for diabetes or heart disease, including signs of gum disease, it is important to consult with your medical doctor and inform your dentist with any of the findings. You may have periodontal disease if you notice: Red, bleeding, or swollen gums Pus from your gums Foul taste Longer looking teeth Loose Teeth Increasing spaces between your teeth Tartar build-up The potential repercussions of periodontal disease upon an individual’s oral and physical well-being is a very serious, but often overlooked, health issue. With more Americans suffering from this disease than diabetes and heart disease, my practice in conjunction with the American Academy of Periodontology would like to educate our community on the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of periodontal disease. We recommend establishing good oral hygiene habits including brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and discussing gum health with a dental professional. ISIS Leader Debuts Online

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is the leader of the ISIS, the Sunni extremist group that has declared an Islamic state in territory it controls in Iraq and Syria. He made an unusual “public” debut in a 21-minute video sermon posted online. The sermon was reportedly delivered on Friday at the Great Mosque in the northern city of Mosul in Iraq. The video bore the logo of its media arm, but it was not possible confirm if the person in the video was indeed al-Baghdadi. Until just a few weeks ago, there were almost no pictures of the elusive leader.

There are very few known photographs of al-Baghdadi, a ruthless Iraqi militant believed to be in his early 40s with a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head. Since taking control of the group in 2010, he has transformed it from a local branch of al Qaeda into an independent transnational military force, positioning himself as perhaps the pre-eminent figure in the global jihadi community. The boldness of his alleged appearance, almost unheard of among the most prominent global jihad figures, suggests the Islamic State’s confidence in their rule of Mosul. “The fact that he has done this without any consequences in Mosul’s biggest mosque is a sign of [the Islamic State group’s] power within the city,” an analyst points out. In the video, the man said to be al-Baghdadi says that “the mujahe-

Al-Baghdadi is dressed in a black robe and turban on the video, a sign that he claims descent from the Prophet Muhammad. He spoke in classical Arabic with little emotion. Many viewers were most interested in the timepiece that al-Baghdadi chose to wear. Peeking out from his black sleeve was a sleek watch that may even be a Rolex or an Omega Seamaster, according to London’s Daily Telegraph, which costs thousands of dollars. “I do not promise you what the kings and rulers promise their subjects and followers — luxury and security and leisure,” al-Baghdadi says. “But I promise what G-d promises those who believe in him.” The leader is known for his expertise at fundraising, a hint as to how he may have been able to afford his luxury timepiece.

“Perfect Aryan” is Really Jewish

In an ironic, not-so-funny twist, an anti-Semitic Nazi campaign featured a Jewish child as the “The ideal Aryan child” in pre-war Germany. The baby was hand-picked by the head of the Nazi propaganda machine, Joseph Goebbels himself. Hessy Taft, now an 80-year-old professor of chemistry in New York, recently presented Yad Vashem with the cover of a 1935 Nazi magazine on

which she appeared. Taft’s opera singer parents, Pauline and Jacob, moved from Lavtia to Germany in 1928, but by 1935 the Nazis’ anti-Jewish laws meant that they could no longer perform. Her father managed to scrape together enough money for professional photographer Hans Ballin to snap a photo of their cherubic baby. A few months later, the family was shocked to discover that their daughter’s image was on the front cover of a Nazi propaganda magazine called “Sun in the House,” which was edited by Kurt Herrman, a friend of Hermann Goering and a staunch Nazi. Ballin deliberately entered the photograph in a contest for the most beautiful Aryan baby, and when Taft’s mother questioned his actions, he told her: “I know, but I wanted to make the Nazis ridiculous.” Goebbels personally chose the winning photograph. The family fled Germany to Paris in 1938, and then moved to Cuba before arriving in the United States in 1949.The Nazis never discovered that their perfect baby, whose image they heavily disseminated, was, in fact, Jewish.

Putin Places Ban on Swearing

There will be a lot less foul language under Putin as a Russian ban on swearing in films, plays and books came into force this week. The policy was designed to appeal to conservatives, although Vladimir Putin’s critics condemned the policy as a further move against free speech in the nation. Under the legislation that was passed in May, films containing “foul language” will be banned from wide release and books with swear words will have to be sold in sealed packages with obscenity warnings. The high school cafeteria that is world politics got a little bit more heated this week. For the first time, a president of China visited South Korea before North Korea. The dictatorship in the north was angered, and others looking on definitely took notice. The U.S. and Japan both have a watchful eye on China’s increasing influence in

After their talks, South Korean President Park Geun-hye told reporters that she and Xi agreed on the need to rid North Korea of nuclear weapons and would resolutely oppose any more nuclear tests. Russian media have reported that software known as the “swear-bot” will be used to police cursing on the Internet. The law is meant to ensure “the protection and development of linguistic culture,” according to a statement on the Kremlin’s website. But critics say it is reminiscent of Soviet-era censorship and will suppress free expression. Putin has struck a conservative tone in his latest presidential term, praising what he calls traditional values and holding up the Russian Orthodox Church as a moral authority. Last month, communications watchdog Roskomnadzor planned to use a search program to root out rude words in online articles and comments attached to them. The 25 million-ruble ($729,500) system will search the 5,000 mass media sites that are already monitored manually. The swearing law follows stricter rules on bloggers and restrictions on non-state media that critics say were part of a campaign to bring independent media under Kremlin control, something the government denies.

The Week of the relationship between China, the world’s second-largest economy, and South Korea, the fourth-biggest economy in Asia. China is South Korea’s largest trading partner, and Seoul says two-way trade topped $220 billion last year. That’s larger than the combined value of South Korea’s trade with the United States and Japan. Analysts don’t think Xi will abandon North Korea entirely as long as Seoul remains loyal to an alliance with Washington that has shielded the South from North Korean aggression and allowed it to build its impressive economy. China also craves stability and worries that too much pressure on North Korea could cause it to collapse, pushing swarms of refugees over the countries’ shared border. Still, the worries about North Korea have helped draw Seoul and Beijing together. Officials in Seoul now expect China to take strong action over future provocations, especially if North Korea conducts another nuclear test as it moves toward building an arsenal

of nuclear-tipped missiles that could reach the United States.

Amazon Tribe Discovered Just when you thought everyone had Facebook, an indigenous tribe with no prior contact to the outside world has emerged from the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. The group made contact with a group of settled Indians, after being spotted migrating to evade illegal loggers, advocates say. The news comes after sightings of the “uncontacted” Indians in Brazil near the border with Peru. Officials with Survival International had warned last month that the isolated tribes face threats of disease and violence as they move into new territory and possibly encounter other people. “Something serious must have happened,” said José Carlos Meirelles,

The North Korean spokesman said that the “reckless U.S. provocative insanity” of mobilizing a “gangster filmmaker” to challenge the North’s leadership is triggering “a gust of hatred and rage” among North Korean people and soldiers. “Apparently, Kim Jong Un plans on watching ‘The Interview,’” one of the actors tweeted last Friday. “I hope he likes it!!” The funnyman later posted on Wednesday, “People don’t usually wanna kill me for one of my movies until after they’ve paid 12 bucks for it.”

Israel Arrests Suspects in Killing of Arab Teen The tragedy of the three murdered teenagers affected every Jew deeply. While many of us chose to cry in private, scream from the rooftops, or pray for peace, unfortunately, some reacted with anger and violence. Israel has arrested six Israelis in the abduction and killing of Mohammed Abu Khudair, a 16 year old Palestinian in East Jerusalem. The six suspects are in custody while the incident remains under investigation. Their names have not been released. This incident marked the beginning of riots and violent protests in Jerusalem and in Israeli Arab towns. At Khudair’s funeral on Friday, Palestinians called for a new uprising against Israel, chanting, “Intifada, Intifada.” Investigators believe Abu Khudair was killed out of “nationalist motives,” a source said. The Week America’s Oldest Person Celebrates 116 Years It seems that every few months the crown of “World’s Oldest Person” gets passed along. Well, Gertrude Weaver of Arkansas now wears the crown of “America’s Oldest Person.” The centurion celebrated her 116th birthday on Friday, July 4th. Ms. Weaver spent her special day at home at the Silver Oaks Health and Rehabilitation in Camden. According to Gerontology Research Group, Weaver is officially the oldest living American and the second-oldest person in the world. Robert Young, the research’s group database administrator and senior consultant for Guinness, said that a 1900 Census listed Weaver as 2-years-old at the

Her only remaining child alive is her 93-year-old son. Cruising Detroit with his Beloved Corvette— 33 Years Later

He thought that was the end of their relationship, but last month AAA notified him that his beloved vehicle was up and running and waiting to be picked up at a Hattiesburg, Mississippi, police station. But how was Talley to get it all the way back to his hometown of Detroit after 33 years? Enter GM. The car manufacturer arranged for the estranged vehicle to be sent back to its Detroit headquarters and presented Talley with his long-lost prized possession. GM executive VP Mark Reuss said, “That car belonged home in Detroit, with its rightful owner.”

Some people try to get attention by dressing up like celebrities. In Taiwan, however, it seems that those looking to impress the opposite gender attempt to look like Lego characters. Yes, you heard that right. Wu Lei, a 54 year old Taiwanese man, spends two hours a day and two pots of gel getting his hair into a perfectly right-angled flat top. He hopes his “do” will woo a 23 year old who has (for obvious reasons) rebuffed his courtship so far. “My friends call him blockhead,” the woman, who has not been named, said. “I can imagine he may have found someone as he had a good job as a medical laboratory scientist at the National Taiwan University Hospital. But he should act his age,” she added. Mr. Lei, however, cannot understand why his choppy looks are not turning any heads. “I adopted this hairstyle because I wanted to look like a guy in his 20s or 30s to attract the girl who rejected me. Or, in fact, any girl,” he’s reported as saying. Unfortunately, most people aren’t

It’s Fine not to Pay the Fine…If It’s 61 Years Later

In this year’s most unromantic marriage proposal, champion eater Joey Chestnut sucked down 61 hot dogs and buns just minutes after proposing to Neslie Ricasa. Chestnut, also called “Jaws,” asked Ricasa for her hand in marriage right before this year’s Nathan’s Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest.

“I felt like I could eat anything. The proposal went great. She said ‘yes,’ and I’m a happy guy all around,” said the champion eater. Said Ricasa, “I never imagined that I would be proposed to onstage before the Fourth of July hot dog eating contest.” Second place in the contest went to Matt Stonie, who wolfed down 56 dogs and third went to Tim Janus who could only polish off 44 footlongs in the ten minutes. Chestnut failed to best his 2013 world record of 69 hot dogs, but he showed no disappointment. “The dogs cooled down and turned really hard to eat today,” he explained. “It was hard today. They sat out in the cold. They were hard to eat and hard to swallow.” With a wedding coming up, perhaps it’s time to diet.

Sometimes coming clean is the best policy. Ron Webster, 91, of Derbyshire, England, discovered a library book that had been in his possession since 1953. The book, Structure and Function in Primitive Society, was too good for Webster to return to the University of Liverpool library when he left the school 61 years ago. Now, decades later, Mr. Webster discovered that he still had the book—and a £4,510 or $7,651 fine to go with it. Librarian Phil Sykes said, “They called me and said, ‘You’ve got to come down, there’s a gentleman trying to return a book he took out in 1953. He’s 91-years-old!’” Out of the goodness of his heart, Sykes waived the fee. ”Of course, I cannot condone the late return of books but I remitted the fine of £4,510 on the condition that Mr. Webster agreed, henceforth, to live an exemplary life and return all his books on time.” Hmm….Now all I have to do is wait another sixty years to return all those Harry Potter books I still have from the library.

Here’s a bit of a primer for the next time you’re sitting next to the flight attendants and just can’t make out what they’re saying. If a crew member notifies the pilot that the plane is out of “Blue Juice,” hold off on the lavatory, it may be out of water. If your flight attendant is a “commuter,” be wary; that means she’s had to fly in from her hometown to get to this job, and she is exhausted. That may still beat being service by a “dinosaur,” or a really senior crew

It’s been a tough few months for Brennan Gleason. To get through the trip, Will sold everything from her designer shoes to her artwork. She kept her trusty Honda CR-V and kept to a $175 weekly budget. Every day was a challenge and she had to learn to cope with the feeling of not knowing where her next warm bed would be. “Every morning I woke up to meditate and try to sweep the fear away. The mind game was and still is rough on me. It will always be my greatest challenge. Living in the moment is hard,” she says. After 36,000 miles, 600 new friends and 164 different beds, when her trip was finally over in Hawaii, Will was overcome by a feeling of depression; she had come to find security in living on the road. “It took a few days to calm myself down and soak up the Aloha State,” she recounts. According to Will, “Travel is the greatest education I have ever given myself. It has taught me that everyone has a great story to tell. I understand how important people are in my life. I used to be much more of a loner. I am inspired by the human experience: listening, interacting and watching people live their daily lives.” Sometimes, the path to winning is to by quitting.

Preparation Mix everything together and marinate meat, chicken or pork at least 2 hours prior to grilling. (Overnight is best.) Remove from marinade, discarding the juices, and then grill as per desired doneness.

Preparation In a jar, mix together the sugar, pepper, vinegar, oil and chicken flavor packet from the Ramen noodles. Set aside. In a dry frying pan (no oil), toast the almonds and then the sesame seeds. In a large bowl, combine the coleslaw mix, scallions, toasted almonds and sesame seeds. Crumble the dry (uncooked) Ramen noodles on top of the cabbage. Gently mix everything together. Just before serving toss the salad with the dressing. Serve immediately.

Preparation In a small bowl, whisk together dressing ingredients. Add salt and pepper to taste. Set aside. In a large bowl, soak corn for 30 minutes; drain well. Preheat grill to mediumhigh heat. Cook corn until grill marks appear—3-4 minutes per side. Let cool and then cut kernels off of the cobs. In a large bowl, combine corn, tomatoes, avocado, basil, red onion and then salt and pepper to taste. Gently add dressing and toss to coat. Serve immediately.

Ingredients 4 bags black tea 4 nectarines, sliced 1/3 cup sugar 5-10 basil leaves

Preparation In a large bowl, whisk together 1 ½ cups of flour with the paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Whisk in the beer until the mixture is well combined. Let the batter rest at room temperature for 10 minutes. While the batter rests, cut the tip off of the stem side of the onions, then remove the peel. Slice the onions horizontally into ½-inch-thick rings and toss them with the remaining ½ cup of flour. Add the vegetable oil to a large, heavy-bottomed pot (Dutch oven) to a depth of 2 inches and heat it over medium-high heat until a deep-fry thermometer reaches 375°F. Working in batches, dip the onion rings into the prepared batter, shaking off any excess, then immediately drop them into the hot oil. Be careful not to overcrowd the pot. Allow the onions to cook in the oil, flipping them once to guarantee even browning, for a total of about 3 minutes. Remove the onions with a slotted spoon and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate. Immediately season them with salt. Repeat the coating and frying process, returning the oil to 375°F between batches, with the remaining onions.

While the tea is steeping, bring the nectarine slices (reserve ¼ of the nectarine slices) and sugar to boil with 1 cup of water. Simmer for 10 minutes, then turn off the heat and add the basil leaves to the pot for 5 minutes to flavor the syrup. Discard the leaves and pour the nectarine mixture into the tea. Chill, then serve with ice and remaining nectarine slices.

Ingredients 3 cans (6 oz. each) frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed 10 oz. frozen strawberries in light syrup, thawed and undrained 1 liter ginger ale

Preparation In 4-quart container, stir lemonade concentrate and 9 cans water until well mixed. Pour lemonade into large punch bowl. Stir in strawberries. Just before serving, add ginger ale and ice; gently stir. For a special touch, freeze cleaned, fresh strawberries in an ice cube tray with water. Add the strawberry ice cubes to the punch right before serving.

In the merit of Aharon’s life work of creating shalom, love, respect and harmony - we, the Jewish people engaged in the type of speech and behavior that created the clouds. We have the ability to create clouds even when we don’t travel together as one camp. We have the ability to create Ananei HaKavod, clouds of glory through our actions. By going out of our way for one another, performing acts of chessed for the other and refining our interpersonal behavior we create magnificent, majestic clouds that can shield our people. The Talmud explains that the clouds served three purposes, to protect us from the elements, to protect us from our enemies and to level mountains and other obstacles which stood in our way. When we blanket ourselves in national shalom, we are shielded from our enemies. When we blanket ourselves in the performance of chessed we need not worry about the elements. When we are united as a people, no mountain stands in our way. Since the death of our three boys there have been repeated calls to continue the achdus (unity) that was forged during the 18 days they were missing. Pledging allegiance to Jewish unity is not enough. As the abovequote Mishna stated, it is not enough to be a “lover of peace” one must also

be a “pursuer of peace.” Simple words are a wonderful start only if they are accompanied by sustained action. Our responsibility during these turbulent times is to bolster the clouds. Each and every day we must do something to contribute to building and sustaining the shalom in Klall Yisroel. We must work harder on our relationships. We must strive to do something meaningful for another at least once a week. We must learn how to interact with dignity and respect to our fellow Jews who may not share our personal beliefs or practices. We must be careful and appropriate regarding how we speak about our gentile neighbors of all races and colors. We must make sure that our Shuls are not only holy places of learning and prayer but also bastions of chessed and kindness. We hope and pray each and every day for lasting peace. We pine for the day when children will no longer be targets for aggression and hatred. We know that day will come; Moshiach will come, redemption will come and we pledge to patiently wait. But we must always we remember - we need each other - because it is only together that we can create the clouds. Let us hope that our words and actions over the coming days and weeks will forge, cement and bolster our magnificent and eternal Ananei HaKavod.

It has been a trying time for our nation. We carry the pain and profound sadness over the abduction and murder of Naftali Frankel, Eyal Yifrach, and Gilad Sha’ar HY’D, three young men who became the sons of all Klall Yisroel. Three boys, who united a people, inspired us to transcend our differences and learn to unite. We pray for their families and friends as they face the difficult days and years ahead. We watch as the rockets rain down on Sderot, Ashkelon, Tel-Aviv and Yerushalayim and pray for the safety of our brothers and sisters. We see our precious soldiers stand poised and ready to enter Gaza and hope that God grants them special protection and providence in all they do. We are pained over the death of Mohammed Abu Khdeir the innocent, sixteen year old boy murdered by our own. We feel the shame that the very evil we fight against has somehow found its way into our ranks and has resulted in a shameful, despicable act of violence. We are supposed to be an Ohr LaGoyim, a light unto the nations and this act has demonstrated that we have the ability to steep to the same level as those who oppress us. We see these events swirling around us and we wonder what should we do? We find ourselves searching for meaning, looking for answers and seeking an approach during these tumultuous times. Dramatic times like these require a response. What is our individual and communal response? The Talmud (Taanis 9a) relates

the following idea: “Rabbi Yossi the son of Rabbi Yehuda said: The Jewish people had three good leaders; Moshe, Aharon and Miriam. And in the merit of these three leaders, three gifts were given to the Jewish people; the well, the cloud and the manna. The well was in the merit of Miriam, the cloud in the merit of Aharon and the manna in merit of Moshe.” Each gift was uniquely related to the individual personality. Miriam was a matriarchal figure for the Jewish people. She showered them with love, concern and care. Water represents chessed (kindness) and therefore the miraculous well was given to us in her merit. Moshe gave the people spiritual life by bringing down and then teaching the Torah. Just as he gave them spiritual nourishment - in his merit they were physically nourished with heavenly bread. But what is the connection between Aharon and the clouds? Why was it Aharon’s merit that brought about this Divine protection? The great Chassidic master Rav Yisroel of Ruzhin (1796-1850) provides a beautiful insight. In Pirkei Avos (Ethics of our Fathers) the great sage Hillel tells us, “Be of the disciples of Aharon, love peace, pursue peace, love people and bring them closer to Torah.” Aharon’s entire life mission was to create bonds of brotherhood and friendship between man and his fellow. He took it upon himself to settle disputes, help with relationship dynamics and attempt to restore equilibrium to the familial structure. “Aharon was a pursuer of shalom (peace) and made every attempt to amplify the feelings of shalom. It was through his influence that people truly loved one another. From the breath (of the kind and loving words they said to one another) that emanated from their mouths, the clouds of Glory were created.” The clouds weren’t simply given to us - they were a result of the kind words, compassionate actions and lov-

n the wake of the June 12 kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers, a cycle of violence has erupted in Israel. With the horrifying abduction of Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaar and Eyal Yifrach hy”d, Hamas, whose operatives committed the murders, began firing rockets from Gaza into Israel. After the boys’ funerals, in a shocking and un-Jewish act of revenge, three Israelis burned a Palestinian teenager to death. This Hamas has used to justify further and more widespread assaults, firing hundreds of rockets into Israel and sparking riots all over the country. In retaliation, the IDF has begun Operation Protective Edge, a long-term offensive against Hamas. The military hopes to destroy the infrastructure of Hamas and is preparing for a possible ground war. The offensive includes targeted bombing of Gaza; more than 1,500 reservists have been called up to active duty.

By early in the week, Hamas launched more than 300 rockets into Israel. The Israelis retaliated with air strikes, targeting terrorist areas and rocket launchers. A tunnel in Rafah, an area in southern Gaza, that Hamas claims was used for “resistance,” a euphemism, of course, for “arms and terrorist smuggling,” blew up, killing seven Hamas, the biggest loss for the terrorist group in months. Two more militants, from what the New York Times calls “a radical Salafi group,” were killed in Israeli overnight airstrikes, as well. With these deaths, Hamas posted on its website that “the Zionist enemy will pay a heavy price.” They further posted a short video, accusing Israel of bringing death and destruction to Gaza and warning residents of Beersheba to run “before it is too late.” By Monday, Hamas vowed to avenge the deaths of their fighters. The President Responds In light of this violence, the U.S. State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki denounced the volley of fire from Gaza, maintaining that Israel has a right to defend its citizens. On Tuesday morning, Haaretz published an OpEd penned by President Barack Obama before June 30 for a Haaretz-sponsored conference. Obama, who has been upsettingly reticent on the murder of the three boys, decried the violence and pressured both parties to reach peace. He opened by stating that “as a father myself, I cannot imagine the pain endured by the parents of Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaar and Eyal Yifrach, who were tragically kidnapped and murdered in June. I am also heartbroken by the senseless abduction and murder of Mohammed Hussein Abu Khdeir, whose life was stolen from him and his family. At this dangerous moment, all parties must protect the innocent and act with reasonableness and restraint, not vengeance and retribution.” Obama, in line with the State Department’s statements, continued, “From Harry Truman through today, the United States has always been Israel’s greatest friend. As I’ve said time and again, neither I nor the United States will ever waver in our commitment to the security of Israel and the Israeli people, and our support for peace will always remain a bedrock foundation of that commitment.” He further emphasized the United States’ fiscal aid commitment to Israel and support for the country and peace. The Mood in Israel With the kidnapping of Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaar and Eyal Yifrach hy”d a month ago, tensions, already strong in the region, increased. Israel at the time rightly blamed Hamas, the terrorist group that dominates in the Gaza Strip. The terrorist organization condoned the kidnappings, but denied any involvement. This was a departure from Hamas’ usual egotistical behavior: Hamas usually flaunts their murders and kidnappings. They like to take responsibility for attacks. On the other hand, the kidnapping takes the fighting between militants and armies to the lowest level: attacks on children, a move abhorred, at least initially, even by the Palestinian Authority. While the military conducted an 18-day search for the kidnapped boys and Jews around the world gathered together in tefilah, Israel began to clamp down on the Hamas infrastructure in the West Bank. Israel raided institutions and arrested close to 400 Palestinians affiliated with Hamas. Six were killed in confrontations in the West Bank. Hamas began attacking by sending rockets from Gaza into Israel. While the search was ongoing, Israeli intelligence identified the perpetrators (one, a known Hamas militant, has since been arrested). The largest settlement in Yesha’s (Yehuda and Shomron) Gush Etzion region with over 1,800 families and 9,500 residents, Efrat is divided into seven neighborhoods, each named for one of the seven species of the Land of Israel: Gefen (grape), Te’ena (fig), Rimon (pomegranate), Dekel (date palm), Dagan (grain), Tamar (date) and Zayit (olives). Efrat’s English-speaking residents comprise 35% of the population, and are very active in all aspects of the community: they provide leadership within the local schools and are involved in many important chessed projects and in local shul programming – delivering shiurim and running educational, spiritual and social activities. Most residents work in the greater Jerusalem area or have home-based businesses, while some travel to Tel Aviv or farther away via car or the train in Bet Shemesh. Thanks to a highway linking Jerusalem with Gush Etzion, Efrat is a mere fifteen minute drive from Jerusalem. In fact, a number of my clients who desired to live in Jerusalem but either had budgetary constraints or preferred to live in a more suburban environment have found Efrat to be a wonderful option as it provides a warm, urbane community close to the capital. Feldman was awarded two Legion of Merit medals for his service during the war. In 1949, President Truman appointed him as Quartermaster General before retiring in 1951. He is also buried in Arlington National Cemetery. There were several others who served as generals during WWII but perhaps the most well-known but tragic story is that of Major General Maurice Rose. The Rose family moved to Colorado when Maurice was young, and in 1915, at the age of 15, he tried to join the state’s National Guard hoping to be a part of the expedition into Mexico. His parents (his father was a rav) found out and brought him home. In 1917, Rose was of age to join the military and was commissioned as an officer.

He was sent to France as part of the 89th Division and was wounded. Serving with distinction, he earned the praise of his commanders. After WWI, Rose briefly left the army to become a travelling salesman but rejoined the military a year later. The problem was that he was stuck at the rank of captain and when asked about it later, he said it was because he was Jewish. He was finally promoted and during WWII served on the staffs of three armored divisions. General Rose became the highest ranking Jewish officer of the war and was beloved by his men for his attitude. As the commander of the 3rd Armored Division, he was known as the spearhead because he was always at the front. Most generals stayed way behind the lines as it was tough to command 30,000 men (that’s the average number of soldiers in an American division during WWII) from the front. However, General Rose always was there and the morale in his division was higher than in other divisions because he was sharing the hardships with his men. The division was nicknamed Spearhead because of his tenacity. They even broke the record of advancing 100 miles in a single day as they made the final push
