Dear Readers,
Summer vacation – nice weather, people more relaxed, extra time on our hands. Perfect time to internalize the accomplishments of the past year. The first eight months are mainly spent toiling at work. Meetings, checklists, focusing on accomplishing as many goals as we can. We don’t really have the time to appreciate all that we have, be it a home, family, a spouse, children, etc. There are simply too many tasks at hand to breathe in and marvel at how much we already have. There’s a saying “You don’t appreciate what you have until you don’t have it.” Perhaps we can change it to a bit less somber message that “You don’t appreciate what you have until you are not occupied with it;” only when we take a step back do we fully notice all of the things we have to be thankful for. If we spend a few minutes on the next family trip or BBQ focusing on our surroundings, we
might be surprised at how wonderful our lives already are. “Hevei mispallel bishlomo shel malchus sheilmalei mora’oi ish es re’ehu chaim blao,” one should pray for the success of the Government, were it not for people fearing them man would swallow the other alive. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the dedication and hard work by the Baltimore police department and police forces throughout the country ensuring that we can live in a peaceful and lawful society. Focusing on the occasional rotten apple as if it was the rule or widespread is both untrue and wrong. It shows a lack of appreciation for their dedication to protect and serve the society we are blessed to live in. May we experience the time when there will be no more jealousy or rivalry…and the pursuit of all people will be to know G-d. Have a wonderful Shabbos, Moshe Meir

Baltimore Families Get Together For A Pre-Aliyah BBQ Although Baltimore has never been a community from which droves of its members make Aliyah, a significant number of families are taking the big step this summer. This past Sunday five of the families moving to Israel within the next few weeks (Messing, Rabinowitz, Lanner, Leichter, Milevsky) joined together for a BBQ hosted by the Milevsky family. The gathering was designed for everyone to get to know each other better and to offer support, chizuk, and inspiration. During the BBQ, the kids practiced their soccer skills (crucial for living in Israel) and then played a big soccer game together. Afterwards, they played an original board game called “The Game of Aliyah,” developed by Liora Milevsky, in which the board was designed with the steps that it takes to move to Israel and points were awarded for answering questions about how to accomplish those steps in real life. Adding to the excitement of the gathering was the fact that four out of the five families are moving to the same city, Ramat Beit Shemesh (or RBS). Ramat Beit Shemesh is a city that has a large Anglo community (Americans, Canadians, British, and South Africans). RBS features as aesthetically pleasing atmosphere with the beautiful Judean Hills in the distance as well as an impressive Americanized infrastructure including great American-style schools. Walking the hallways of the local schools is simi-
lar to walking the hallways of a TA or BY Baltimore. Additionally, from the local bagel place to the supermarket and shuls, English and the American mentality permeates daily life. So life in RBS is the fusion of many of the comforts of chutz la’aretz with the significant perk of being in Eretz Yisroel – what could be better? The existence of a place like RBS has removed an additional excuse to avoid contemplating relocating to Hashem’s gift to our people. Seeing what RBS has to offer
combine RBS with numerous religious, spiritual, and historical reasons for making Aliyah, it is easy to appreciate why these families are extremely excited about their upcoming move. Devorah Messing, whose family is settling in Ranana, another community with a large Anglo population, is moving because she believes “all Jewish People belong in Israel;” while her husband, Rachi, said, “why not? It’s safer than Baltimore.” Nachi Lanner plans on, “Live(ing) the dream” in Is-
makes the line “we can’t move because of the kids” tenuous. As Mutty Rabinowitz commented regarding his decision to move to Israel, “Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, or RBS.” Ramat Beit Shemesh is definitely making the landing much softer for most of these families. When you
rael. The get-together also offered these families an opportunity to see for themselves how many other likeminded people in Baltimore who believe in the importance of living in Eretz Yisroel are finally realizing their dreams. Sara Lanner said, “we believe that the
Jews belong there (Israel) and all the time that we have been here our hearts have been there and now we have the zechus to truly go home”. Shoshanna Rabinowitz added, “It is a very wonderful place for my kids to grow up.” Each of these families has been preparing for this move for the past few months and throughout the BBQ everyone discussed their plans for jobs, kids’ schools, finding housing, and getting settled. Israel is now going to have two new computer experts from Baltimore, along with a lawyer, accountant, and psychologist. Many American jobs can transfer to Israel or can continue through telecommuting and flexible hours. Although they anticipate some initial difficulties, as any move entails, the gathered families share in the belief that the difficulties will be well worth it. David Leichter said, “Hashem has been calling us for 2,000 years to come home and it is time to answer the call.” Although a mass exodus of Baltimore families to Israel may be unrealistic, Iy”H, as many more families from Baltimore answer this call, it will begin a necessary communal discussion about what Israel has to offer nowadays for Baltimore families and what steps are being taken to, at a minimum, explore the marvelous possibility. As Avidan Milevsky, the host of the BBQ noted, “The arc of Jewish history bends toward Israel, and I want to be ahead of the curve.”

Highest-Ranking Police Officer Acquitted in Freddie Gray Case From ABC news
A Baltimore judge acquitted Lieutenant Brian Rice of manslaughter and other charges for his involvement in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray in April 2015. Rice was the highest ranking of the six police officers charged in the high-profile case by Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby. Prosecutors have yet to secure a conviction. Rice, 42, was cleared of charges including involuntary manslaughter, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment. He elected a bench trial, and Circuit Judge Barry Williams decided his fate instead of a jury. Two other officers were previously acquitted in relation to Gray’s death -- Edward Nero and Caesar Goodson Jr. Another officer, William Porter, had a mistrial last year after a jury could not reach a consensus on the charges brought against him. Prosecutors charged that Rice showed reckless disregard for Gray when he failed to secure him with a seat belt after he helped load Gray into the police van. Gray died of injuries that he sustained
while in police custody seven days after he was apprehended. All of the officers involved in the case have pleaded not guilty. Williams previously acquitted Officers Edward Nero and Caesar Goodson Jr. of all charges. The case against Officer William Porter ended in a mistrial in December. He is scheduled to be retried in September. Officer Garrett Miller will go before a judge on July 27, and Sgt. Alicia White’s proceeding begins Oct. 13. Prosecutors failed to prove in court that Rice acted in a grossly negligent manner and was aware of the risks to Gray but disregarded them, and in addition, they failed to prove reckless endangerment, that he was aware of the risks and acted unreasonably.
Also, they were unable to prove the lieutenant corruptly failed to carry out an act required of him. Prosecutors attempted to home in on Rice’s training during the trial, saying that he should have known the consequences of failing to secure a shackled prisoner with a seatbelt, and that he intentionally disregarded the consequences. Williams had previously dropped an assault charge against Rice, citing lack of evidence, and also dismissed one count of misconduct on the first day of the trial. The verdict comes at a time of increasing frustrations throughout the country over recent police shootings that left Alton Sterling and Philando Castile dead. The Baltimore Police Commissioner announced new precautions effective today that will take place today around the city, calling for all officers to patrol in teams of two, plus, there is a rule that two cars are required to respond to calls until further notice. “The safety of our police officers is paramount to their families, our community, and me,” Baltimore Police Commis-
sioner Kevin Davis said. “Our capacity to serve relies on our commitment to keep our police officers safe as they protect our community.” On Sunday, three police officers were killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The shooter was killed but the motive is still unknown. This follows the shooting death of five Dallas police officers last week. In Baltimore, 65 people taking part in a march against police use of force were arrested over the weekend after they blocked part of Interstate 83, police said. Of the 65 arrested, 10 were juveniles. Those arrested were charged with failure to obey and illegally walking on a highway. While blocking Interstate 83, protesters chanted “hands up, don’t shoot.” One participant carried a “Black Lives Matter” sign, while another wore a shirt that read “I am Freddie Gray.” March organizers said they were rallying to create a civilian review board for police investigations. They also want to reallocate 10 percent of the city’s police budget for community programs.

Let’s Appreciate Everyone! by Bracha Goetz
Soon after Talia was born, people started asking me if my next picture book was going to be about children with disabilities. I told them that wasn’t happening, though, as I didn’t know that much yet about the subject. But wouldn’t you know it? I soon read an article in our local Baltimore Jewish Home newspaper, written by Yael Zelinger from the Macks Center for Jewish Education in Baltimore. She was describing the content of some of the B’More Inclusive Experiences that she was providing for children in schools to increase awareness and sensitivity about disabilities. She also made it clear that the source of this consciousness raising was the Torah. Her workshops were brilliant and groundbreaking, and I contacted her
right after reading about them to ask if I could possibly put the amazing content from her workshops into a children’s book. She was thrilled to have

her ideas spread as far as possible, so Let’s Appreciate Everyone! began to get written that night. The main thesis of this new book is that really all of us have disabilities – whether visible or not – and we each have gifts to bring to our world. In the book, children basically get to attend mini-workshops that help them recognize that some are good at sports and others are not, but the ones who are not, may have other gifts like friendliness or kindness or be good at reading. Some may struggle with reading, but be terrific at cracking jokes. Children learn to try to look for what they can appreciate in each person. Another thing that children discover in the book is how it feels to a child when others exclude him or make fun of him. The paper smiley faces they are given get folded up more and more with each ridicule that comes their way until the smiley face become crumpled. They learn about the many positive things they could say instead to a child when they see him or her struggling with a disability. The children in the book experience a small sense of what it is like when a child feels different than everyone else and alone. Through using the example of farm animals, the children see that each individual has a unique contribution to make in our world, and how what each one brings is needed in some significant way. It is not an accident that the disabilities of great people were clearly depicted in the Torah, the book explains. For instance, Moshe (Moses) has a speech impediment, Yitzchok (Isaac) becomes blind, and a less well-known courageous Biblical hero, Chushim ben Dan, was deaf. But we focus on what these people - as well as all the people we meet each day - do well and what they can teach us. One of my favorite lessons from the workshops also included in the book, is a reminder that there is a five-letter word that begins with “S” that is great to do when you meet someone and you notice that she has
a disability. That word isn’t STARE, it’s SMILE. Because even though we are all made differently, “there’s one thing we all want. Everyone likes to be appreciated and included.” In addition, at the end of the book, helpful tips are presented that children (and adults) are eager to practice. For instance, nobody may have ever explicitly explained to a child that when he meets a child who is blind, it’s good to introduce oneself right away so the child will know who he is, and when he is leaving, he should say goodbye to let the child who is blind know that he is leaving. Another example given is that it is helpful to sit down in a chair next to a person who is in a wheelchair to be on the same level when talking together. It is also explained that there are many disabilities that are not visible, which make it hard for some children to be “nice and friendly” but these children too, may appreciate an offer to be included as much as possible. Here’s the thing, though. I don’t think I would have ever written this book if my granddaughter, Talia, had not entered our lives. It was because of Talia that my eyes and heart were opened to have Yael Zelinger’s article motivate me to write on this important topic. That’s how it goes in life. The article would not have made the same impression on me, without Talia, without her severe spina bifida, without her pure smiling face looking up at everyone from her little bumbo wheelchair. She isn’t even two years old yet, and though she cannot seem to feel anything from the waist down, her precious feelings are inspiring changes in others’ attitudes and behaviors. Talia, already, you are bringing many gifts to our world. Bracha Goetz is the author of over 30 children’s books, including her newest book: Let’s Appreciate Everyone! Maryland BOOST Tuition Scholarship Program Moves Into Next Phase BaltimoreJewishLife.com/Jeff Cohn
The application period for Maryland’s new state-funded tuition scholarship program ended this past Monday. The BOOST (Broadening Options and Opportunities for Students Today) program will provide $5 million in tuition scholarships to low-income students attending nonpublic schools beginning in the fall. Agudath Israel of Maryland, in conjunction with the Jewish day schools across the state, conducted a community-wide cam-
paign to encourage and assist eligible families in completing the online application. On Sunday night July 10th, Agudath Israel co-hosted a “BOOST Open House” with Bais Yaakov of Baltimore to ensure that local households had every chance possible to apply for a scholarship. Many families took advantage of Bais Yaakov’s computer lab to complete the online application with the the help of staff members Rabbi Ariel Sadwin, director Agudath Israel Mid-Atlantic Region
who provided additional assistance in completing the tedious applications. The state-appointed advisory board is now working diligently to sort through a number of different program criteria in order to make the appropriate grant recommendations ahead of the start of the 2016-2017 school year. To find out more about the BOOST scholarship go to http://www.marylandpublicschools. org/boost/.

Ari Elman
Who are the top 3 suspects? I’d prefer not to comment while the investigation is currently ongoing. How long have you lived in Baltimore? I grew up in Baltimore and attended TA from Kindergarten to eighth grade before going to the Yeshiva of Greater Washington for high school. After college at YU, back to Baltimore for medical school and left again for residency in New York and Philadelphia. Most recently we moved back to Baltimore three years ago for my fellowship in hematology and oncology at the University of Maryland Medical Center and now I am practicing at the Berman Cancer Institute at GBMC. What shul do you currently attend? I guess that’s also a multipart answer. I’m
Are you part of any kiddush clubs both in shul or out of shul? No unofficial Kiddush clubs, although I was a big fan of the Kiddush at Avrumi Gross’s house after the Shomrei 8:15 minyan which has now morphed into an official Shomrei Kiddush after the 8:45 minyan. Now to learn more about the history of the 2nd most and soon to be most well-known Dr. Elman.... What medical school did you attend? While my wife wanted to stay in New York at the time for Mount Sinai, NYU, or Einstein, I was happy to come back to Baltimore for my in-state tuition at the University of Maryland.
What kind of Doctor are you? I recently finished my fellowship at Maryland in hematology and medical oncology. To get here, I had to complete a residency in Internal Medicine, served as Chief Resident for an extra year, and then three more years of fellowship. I now work at the Berman Cancer Institute at GBMC as a hematologist and medical oncologist. As a hematologist I treat benign (non-cancerous) blood disorders such as blood clots or anemia, and as a medical oncologist I work with teams of surgeons and radiation oncologists to treat all types of cancer. As a medical oncologist I treat cancer with medications. Traditionally this has been chemotherapy, but more recently many cancers are treated with targeted therapies which are more specific to the cancer and are often taken by mouth, and immunotherapy which helps harness the body’s immune system to attack and fight cancer. What made you decide to go to medical school? I think growing up with a father who is a physician played a big role. My parents never pushed me towards this career, but always supported and encouraged me through my training. I remember people coming to our house almost any night of the week with eye problems that my father was able to help. I consider it a huge zchus and at the same time a tremendous responsibility to do the work I do. How proud is your mother? You have no idea. She actually gets upset if a wedding invitation addressed to me or a name card says “Mr. Elman.” I’m not as picky.
Where do you see your medical career being in 10 years? I hope to develop a niche and become more specialized in a particular tumor type. That way I can help guide new research protocols and hopefully new treatments. Quite honestly, I love what I do and would be pleased if I were doing exactly the same thing in 10 years as I’m doing now. What will you do if they cure cancer? Won’t you be out of a job? I’d honestly be thrilled. We all have a family member or a friend who has been affected by this terrible disease. Even with a cure, I’m guessing patients will still need oncologists to deliver the care. Anything thing else you would like to share with the Baltimore community? I’d like to wish good luck to my brother Dr. Dov Elman who just moved back to Baltimore and is practicing as an endodontist. He did his residency at Harvard so he definitely knows what he’s doing. Please call the always happy and optimistic Elman brothers for all of your Cancer and Root Canal needs. On a more serious note, I’d like to offer any help I can to anyone in the community who is personally dealing with or has a family member dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Often times, treatment decisions are very difficult and patients can hear conflicting opinions from different physicians. Even if you do not see me in the office, please feel free to call anytime for advice or questions. You can call my proud mother if you need my phone number or call the office at GBMC at 443-849-3051.

currently on the executive board of Shomrei Emunah working with our esteemed new Shul President Dov Ocken. I grew up at Shomrei and had my bar mitzvah as well as the brissim of two of my boys at Shomrei. My kids love the groups, and I’m a big fan of the learning and shiurim available at the 8:15 minyan as well as the singing and ruach at the 8:45 minyan. My family and I are fortunate to have a relationship with Rabbi Marwick who I have gotten to know better as we’ve become more involved in the Shul. Rabbi Marwick’s drashos are always impressive drawing on a wide breadth of Torah and worldly sources, and his answers to shaylos are well balanced, clear, and thoughtful. During the week I attend daf yomi at Suburban with Rabbi Silber and Shachris at Mercaz with Rabbi Eichenstein. They are both also very special Rabbanim who I am fortunate to be close with.

Baltimore Biker Cholim does it Again! By Rochelle Goldberg
3rd Event! 3rd Success! All thanks to you, our cyclists, our sponsors, and our volunteers. Yes, you did it again. Over 100,000 dollars raised by 174 cyclists and sponsors for Baltimore Bikur Cholim. On Sunday, July 17, the 50 milers, pumped and helmeted, cycled down the path behind Beth Tfiloh’s grounds, followed by the 25 milers and the 10 milers, 174 strong, each group led by their ride marshals, traversed the scenic country-side routes of Baltimore County. Coach Noam Shiman, Jeff Schwartz, Shaya Lerner, and Aharon Newman read the safety instructions and encouraged all to stay hydrated.
Hatzalah was graciously on hand supplying medical help for all who might need it. Along the routes, Sag wagons, led by Yehuda Prero, followed the cyclists in cars for safety. Rest Stops, led by Daniel Kirshenbaum and Eliezer Portnoy, supplied riders with respite, drink and snacks. The incomparable D.J., Aaron Shiller rocked the crowd with exciting music and banter. Family and friends were on hand to cheer each group at the finish line with homemade signs and tremendous applause. Laughter, excitement and a tremendous feeling of accomplishment by cyclists and spectators pervaded the parking lot at Beth Tfiloh as the
party continued. The children were treated to snow cones and cotton candy, expertly run by Ari Weiss. Moshe Rock’s famous balloon twisting dazzled everyone and face painters transformed the toddler’s faces into adorable animals and princesses. Everyone enjoyed the lavish and delicious barbeque prepared by Yaffa caterers as the program continued. Dr. Jonathan Ringo, representing Sinai/Lifebridge-sponsors of the Bikur Cholim Family Fun Event and BBQ, complimented Bikur Cholim and all it does for the community and how we are truly partners with Sinai/
Lifebridge in helping those in need. Rabbi Tzvi Techman, Rav of Ohel Moshe and board member of Bikur Cholim gave an uplifting and extremely meaningful Dvar Torah and recited a perek of Tehilim for the cholim of the community. He continued with a beautiful and meaningful metaphor “A bicycle can be a very sophisticated instrument, but at the end of the day it is based on one of a most remarkable yet simple invention, the wheel. One of the principles of a wheel that enables us to utilize it in transporting large and weighty matter is the fact that a wheel connects one point of it at a time with the surface it rides

board of Bikur Cholim, shared this story. As our 50 mile cyclists were refueling at the rest stop at Glencoe Road, a non-Jewish farm owner who allows his property to be used for this rest stop, was so impressed with what he was told about Bikur Cholim and how the riders conducted themselves that he made a donation to Bikur Cholim. How extraordinary a lesson of making a Kiddush Hashem everywhere and anywhere you go. Zevi Daniel thanked all the volunteers and sponsors who made this event another smashing success. He then announced the top fund raisers in various categories: Top Fundraiser: Bill Goldberg with $3,822.00; Top Youth Fundraiser: Yisroel Nueberger with $3,812.00; and Top Father Son Team: Eli and Chaim Greengart with
$1,835.00. A TREK BIKE (donated by Maven Motors) was won by Yitzy Goldberg and A WEBER GRILL (donated by the Gutman Family) was won by Gil Neuman. He concluded with thanking the event coordinators, Mordechai Gottlieb and Rochelle Goldberg and their committee: Yaakov Berkowitz, Tzvi Feigenbaum, Noam Shiman and Liz Rothstein. ecutive director of Baltimore Bikur Cholim spoke straight from the heart in his remarks,… just as a non-cyclist cannot fathom a person riding a bike for 50 miles, so to “we cannot understand what is going through the minds of those facing a medical crisis. We cannot understand the feelings of someone sitting next to a loved one in a hospital bed, when a cheerful Bikur Cholim volunteer delivers a delicious fresh meal. Or the feeling of sitting in the waiting room outside the operating room when a Bikur Cholim volunteer sits down with them to talk and take their mind off things for a while. Harav Nachman Levovitz, who has visited Baltimore every year during those 25-plus years it has hosted the Mir, spoke about the powerful siyata dishmaya that results when people are driven by a true sense of achrayus. The following day, Harav Finkel visited and spoke at Yeshivas Ner Yisroel and the Mesivta of Baltimore. He
then proceeded to greet a crowd of 700 elementary talmidim at Yeshivas Kochav Yitzchok, who were all dressed in white shirts and joined in spirited singing in a beautiful display of k’vod haTorah. The boys listened as the Rosh Hayeshiva elaborated on how every boy can bring out his true potential by becoming a Gadol baTorah and a respected chelek of Klal Yisroel. The entire Baltimore community received tremendous chizuk and warmth from this much anticipated visit.

We learn from here, said Harav Kaplan, about the amazing power of Tefilla. Even from someone like Korach, who was waging a war against Moshe and the Torah, Tefilla can sometimes be accepted. Harav Kaplan delivered a halacha shiur on Shabbos afternoon at Congregation Kol Torah, led by Rabbi Yosef Berger, on the mitzvah of tzitzis. He

Torah Thought Revenge
Rabbi Zvi Teichman Exactly two years ago during the week of the Shabbos we read from the portion of Balak, the tragic end to the ordeal of the three kidnapped boys, Eyal, Gilad and Naftali, may their blood be avenged, transpired. Once again we faced a cowardly enemy who ruthlessly extinguished three brilliant lights. We observed during those grueling weeks and days the awesome strength inherent within our people. The parents of these three martyred boys exhibited before the entire world unbelievable courage and majesty in the face of one of the greatest challenges, the loss of a child. We are a resilient people. No matter how hard our enemies try to defeat us, we rise with ever greater courage and resolve to go on. What is the secret of our strength? • הן עם כלביא יקום וכארי יתנשא (במד־ )בר כג כד, Behold! the people will arise like a lion cub and raise itself like a lion...

This ability to rouse our strength in the face of challenge and vulnerability is summoned from us in the very first two words of Rav Yosef Karo’s Jewish Code of Law, the Shulchan Aruch, where he charges us foremost to be יתגבר כארי, Strengthen oneself like a lion in service to our Creator. )(שו"ע או"ח סימן א סעי' א The Sages sought to incorporate the reciting of this entire portion of Balak into the body of Sh’ma because of this verse and its noble sentiment, but decided otherwise as it would be too burdensome for the community to add this entire section. ):(ברכות יב Is this quality innate and instinctive? How did we attain such strength? The verse goes on to describe the nature of a lion. )לא ישכב עד יאכל טרף (שם כג כד, it will not lie down until it consumes prey. A lion stays focused on its task never settling for less, never compromising its ideals. Rashi avers that this attitude finds expression in how a Jew does not lie down on his bed at night until he consumes and destroys any harmful thing that comes to tear him. How so? He recites the Sh’ma on his bed and entrusts his spirit to the hand of the Omnipresent. One who reaffirms one’s ideals and principles, living consciously with the belief that G-d protects those who pledge allegiance to Him, is capable of awakening like a lion in facing the demands of the day.

The boys’ families dis-
play of unswerving faith in G-d and their fellow Jews, as well as their boundless love and commitment to our holy land and its people, reflected so inspiringly this leonine spirit. It clearly stemmed from their profound and tangible relationship with the Almighty. • The Medieval Talmudist, Reb Yoel HaLevi of Mainz points out that the first letters in the expression עד יאכל טרף, (until it consumes prey), intimating the trait to remain steadfast, spell out the word ט-י-ע. The עיטis a bird of prey that appeared at the Covenant of the Parts. Avraham Avinu slaughtered a turtledove and young dove placing them down whole as contrasted with his bringing of the heifers, goats and rams which were cut down the center. וירד העיט על הפגרים וישב אתם אב־ )רהם (בראשית טו יא, Birds of prey descended upon the carcasses, and Avram drove them away. The Radak explains that these birds sought to pick at the carcasses of the whole birds that symbolize the Jewish nation. This teaches us that in every generation there will be those who seek to pounce on us and take advantage of our precarious state. Avram, however, waved them off; symbolizing G-d’s protecting us throughout history from the attacks of our enemies against us. There were those, unfortunately, who swooped down on these holy corpses, callously blaming the tragedy of these deaths on the innocent children for carelessly hitchhiking. Others foolishly condemned the parents for the death of their children because they chose to live among the ‘settlers’. While the rest childishly pointed an accusing finger at the government and its secular attitudes as what prodded their murders.
In the image of our Patriarch Avraham we firmly wave off all these self-serving detractors and stand in awe of these precious families who represent the beauty and majesty of our dear Torah with their integrity, faith and comportment. • There is one last description of the nature of the lion. )ודם חללים ישתה (במדבר כג כד, and drinks the blood of the slain. Is this an image of a Jew? Do we seek to drink in victory the blood of our enemies? Certainly calculated revenge, in its proper context and place, for all the evil and pain that has been inflicted upon us is part of the Divine plan. But how are we to fathom this portrayal of ‘drinking the blood of the slain’. The Talmud derives a halacha from this very verse. In order for food to be susceptible to receiving טומאה, halachic impurity, from a contaminated source, it must first be “wetted”, i.e., intentionally come in contact with liquid. The common liquids are wine, honey, olive oil, milk, dew and of course water. This verse which discusses the “drinking” of blood indicates that blood too qualifies as a liquid that “prepares” a food item to be capable of becoming impure if it subsequently comes in contact with a source of impurity such as a human or animal corpse. Rav S.R. Hirsch explains that “impurity” only affects humans and the materials associated with him. The original state of the natural world cannot receive defilement. A live animal or fruit attached to a tree is free from contamination. It is only man with his free willed, self-determining Godly nature that frees him from forced obedience to purely physical demands. Man can master, rule, and even use his sensuous body with all its innate forces, urges and powers, with God-like freeself decision to fulfill the duties set
27 IN TE R E S T R A TES ARE STIL L L O W, N OW IS THE TIME TO
Perhaps this phrase expresses a profound idea. There are those whose “hand” seek power and control and happily “slaughters” all those who stand in its way spilling the “blood” of others without concern. One who lives in a “natural order”, whose sole objective and dream is embodied by being received into the embrace of seventy two virgins, is merely an extension of the animal world, devoid of nobility and grace. But there are those who see one’s “hand” as a tool to extend our influence in improving a world and bringing it to its most noble purpose.
It is the loving “hand” that reaches out seeking to “extract” meaning in every encounter in a physical realm and giving it purpose and “value”. Our greatest revenge is when we replace a chaotic world of anarchy and lust with contemplative, purposeful actions and thought that extol the beauty of Torah and its ways. The “drinking of our enemies blood” refers to our ability to transform blood thirst into a process of elevating our world unto a pursuit of meaning and purpose. We must no longer merely exist, pursuing selfish goals and the imbibing of physical pleasures, but rather find a deeper connection with our Creator in all that we pursue. • We are pained, frustrated and angry. We have a choice. We can mimic the natural order of the world by reacting with negativity, despairing and getting depressed. Or we can choose life, taking our sorrow and pain and transforming it into renewed commitment. Our job is not done but we remain resolved. We will not be victims of complacency. Our best response to the tragedy of life extinguished is by igniting our own lives, living inspired as they did. Let us never forget the powerful message we learned two years ago. Following the model of these young men’s marvelous parents and families, we must live with that same faith, commitment and joy of life they refuse to let be marred by the devastating loss they suffered. If we do, then that is our greatest revenge.

El Al: Better Late than Never
Better safe than sorry. At least that’s what El Al would want you to believe after the Israeli airline ranked 40 out of 40 amongst airlines for punctuality, according to a recently released report by FlightStats, the world leader in commercial flight tracking. While Japan, All Nippon and Iberia ranked on top for landing on schedule, El Al flights are reported to land an average of forty minutes late. El Al’s response to the damning numbers was: “We are sorry to say that recently El Al has come under sanctions which disrupt the opera-
Accidental Blast Kills 2 Soldiers
An accidental explosion at an army post in the Golan Heights claimed the lives of two members of the IDF, including one from New Jersey, and wounded three others. The incident happened at seven in the morning on Sunday when Sgt. Hussam Tafesh, a Druze from Beit Jann, accidentally set off a grenade he was holding while talking to Sgt. Shlomo Rindenow, 20, who was originally from New Jersey. The IDF said it was still unclear why Tafesh was holding the grenade in the first place.
In News Three other soldiers who were inside a nearby jeep were wounded. They are being questioned about the nature of the blast and whether there was an argument that preceded it. On Monday, the two soldiers were laid to rest. Shlomo’s brother begged for people to attend his funeral. “During most of his service my brother was alone,” Jeff Rindenow said. “He volunteered for the army because he wanted to be a fighter. We ask that at least in his last farewell he should not be alone.” “After he was almost alone throughout his whole service, we hope that now, in his last moments, he will surrounded by love.”

Bombing on Light Rail Averted
This past weekend’s failed military coup in Turkey has a close connection to Israel. Akin Ozturk, the former Turkish air force chief who has been named as one of the coup’s main instigators, was Turkey’s military attaché to Israel in the 1990s. He led the Turkish air force from 2013 to 2015. Turkey has laid the majority of blame for the upheaval on Fethullah Gulen, a well-known anti-Islamist cleric who lives in the U.S., and has called on the U.S. to extradite Gulen. Gulen had left Turkey in 1999. But Gulen has categorically denied any involvement with the events in Turkey. “I condemn, in the strongest terms, the attempted military coup in Turkey. Government should be won through a process of free and fair elections, not force.” He added, “I pray to G-d for Turkey, for Turkish citizens, and for all those currently in Turkey that this situation is resolved peacefully and quickly.” On Monday, Ozturk and 26 other senior officers were charged with treason. The general, though, insisted, “I am not the person who planned or led the coup.”
A terrorist from the West Bank was stopped by police before he had a chance to board the Jerusalem light rail on Jaffa Road while carrying knives and three pipe bombs. An alert police officer stopped the Palestinian who was carrying a suspicious package and found a bomb inside upon examination. The terrorist was arrested and sappers were deployed at the scene to neutralize the bomb. The attempted murderer is in his 20s and is from Beit Ula, near Chevron. “This morning, thanks to the vigilance of the light rail security guards, a large terror attack was averted,” said Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat. “Our message to the public is to return to their normal routines, to remain vigilant and to never give in to terror.” Since October, close to 40 Jews

Want a burger? You’re going to have to work for it. And when we say work for it, we mean really work it. The Moving Food Truck in Portugal is on the move – and so are its customers. You see, the currency at the Moving Food Truck is exercise. Want a burger for lunch? Better start walking. Patrons were first required to walk about 3.3 miles or run 2.5 miles before they chowed down. Need a squirt of ketchup? No problem! That’ll be another 500 meters. The Moving Food Truck was created in collaboration with an anti-obesity group in Portugal. Portugal has some of the highest obesity rates in Europe, and the one-day campaign aimed to educate the public on what it takes to burn off a high-calorie meal. Think the exercise turned customers away? Well, there were many who got off their couches and turned out to eat their lunch on the move; in the one day it was open, 20 cheeseburgers, 32 pizza slices, and 50 cups of soda were purchased – that’s 22,934 calories burned. Because, you know, this food is made for walking.
Moody’s mother is no longer alive. While Chris is shopping at a thrift shop, a ring on the counter catches her eye. Chris tells the employees that her mother’s ring looked just that and had the initials W.E. on it. After taking a closer look, Chris realizes that she is reunited with her mother’s ring once again. Although the

The Week Some Puzzling Words Do you know the answer to 21 down? Better keep it to yourself. Recently, a 91-year-old German woman couldn’t help herself when she passed by a crossword puzzle and filled in the blanks. But this was no ordinary puzzle. It was hanging
at Nuremberg’s Neues Museum and was part of “Reading-work-piece” by artist Arthur Koepcke. The 1965 work is valued at $89,000, or at least it was before the nonagenarian wordsmith began scribbling solutions to the crossword clues. Now, the woman, who was among a group of senior citizens touring the museum, is being investigated for damage to property. She claims, though, that the artwork includes the
In News phrase (in English) “Insert Words,” so she was simply following instructions. At 91, perhaps she should have known better.
Fight over Who’s Right Jörg and Anita Hagemann have been living in their rental property since 2012 but their landlady wants
them to move. Christine K, as she is known under German privacy laws, tried to evict them over a dispute of a shared garden. But the couple, who is in their seventies, has refused. Since then, the landlady has endeavored to make life miserable for them – and it seems to be working. Christine has slapped Anita and threw water over her. She shut off the hot water to the apartment and cleared out their belongings from their shared cellar. In Germany, tenants’ rights are strongly protected and it seems that Christine was at her wit’s end. Last week, she decided that enough was enough. When the Hagemanns woke up and tried to leave their apartment, they found that their front door was blocked by a wall of bricks. Christine had it closed up while they slept. She left them a letter saying they could climb out of the window or use the exit from the basement. The police were called, but Christine refused to remove the bricks. A local fire brigade was called to tear it down. Police have been called to the home no fewer than 26 times. “I wanted to set an example, to raise public awareness,” Christine K said. “That’s why I had a friend brick up the door.” “We wanted to spend our retirement here,” the 77-year-old Mrs. Hagemann told Westen Allegmeine Zeitung newspaper. “She took our quality of life away.” “I’ve had serious heart surgery,” the 79-year-old Mr. Hagemann told Bild. “Every day there was something new. One day our mailbox was gone.” When he found the front door bricked up, he was “speechless”, he said. “As a student I witnessed the Berlin Wall. It felt the same again.” Finally, despite their assertions that they are in the right, the Hagemanns are going to move. You know what they say: good fences make good neighbors.

If you wish to transfer your RX: you can log on to Attention Donald Trump. Want to “cleanse your soul” and show people how smart you are? How about chugging some green tea? Recently, an Indian company gifted the Donald with 6,000 green tea teabags. Apparently, they think that the presidential hopeful really needs to drink their tea. “Our message is, please Mr. Trump drink the tea. For your sake, for America’s sake, for the world’s sake,” the company pleaded on its website. An online video shows an enormous box of tea being delivered to Trump Towers in New York. The accompanying message read, “Dear Mr. Trump, namaste from India, we are sending you lots and lots of natural green tea. It fights against harmful free radicals. It helps purify mind and body and regain a healthy balance. It has also proven to make people smarter.” 6,000 teabags is a lot; if drunk 4 times a day (!) it will last for four years, enough to calm him through four years of Hillary’s reign. The company, Te-a-Me Teas, set up a website, teafortrump.com, where people can tweet a message to Trump and urge him to drink the tea daily. “We firmly believe green tea can do a lot of good to people. We thought green tea will help him cleanse his mind, body and soul,” its spokesman said. A video on the website delivers the following message to Trump and the world. “Donald Trump has got the whole world worried; Mexicans, Muslims, Jews, blacks, women, immigrants…Democrats, Republicans. We can’t stop him, but maybe we can change him?” I’m sure that gallons of green tea will do the trick.

Be happy that Kim and Dan Woolnough didn’t send you an invite to their wedding. In an effort to keep costs low, the British couple cut corners at every turn. Their frugality “paid off” – their nuptials cost only $4,000. The biggest thing they saved on was the food. But don’t think you missed out by staying on our side of the ocean. The food served was outof-date that was destined to be thrown out. U.K. charity ReFuse, that sources food from local supermarkets, bakeries, and small businesses that would otherwise have gone in the trash, was responsible for arranging all the food. On the menu was tomato and red pepper soup, followed by vegetable curry or pasta, and a range of desserts. And if you couldn’t stomach the fare, don’t worry – guests were sent home with the leftover food lest some of it would be thrown out. The food wasn’t the only thing at the wedding that was secondhand. Kim wore a previously worn dress from a swap shop that cost $100. The invitations were made out of recycled paper. And even the rings were made from reused metal. The 24-year-old bride admitted, “Some of our guests thought it was a bit weird that we were having out-ofdate food for the wedding breakfast, but everyone said it was really tasty.” “We didn’t want to waste anything so we had to be quite creative.”

and you see some roaches running around, you’ll see that they have a lot to do. And they’re going places. In fact, roaches don’t need a map as they scurry through your cabinets. It turns out, according to researchers, that these pesky insects have an internal GPS. The internal GPS is about the same used by rats and even humans, so they’re even more similar to us than we think (how comforting). Now when you’re missing the paprika in your cabinet just ask your friendly pet roach. He’ll be happy to show you where it is.

Torah Thought
Parshat Chukat By Rabbi Berel Wein
T
he entire book of Bamidbar is a litany of bad behavior, poor choices and a lack of faith that dooms that generation – a great generation that left Egypt triumphantly and miraculously – to death in the desert of Sinai. But perhaps the most tragic event on a human and personal level is contained in this week’s Torah reading when the fate of Moshe is sealed. He will not be allowed to enter the Land of Israel. The Torah itself ascribes this punishment to the fact that Moshe smote the rock to bring forth water for the people instead of speaking to the rock. Though this
reason is emphasized a number of times in the Torah, the great thinkers and commentators of the Jewish people over the ages have searched for a deeper understanding of the cause that led to Moshe’s ultimate fate. Maimonides saw it in terms of a cumulative effect of incidents – albeit individually, perhaps not of major consequence – where Moshe was guilty of anger and of not fulfilling G-d’s will in exactitude. Other thinkers and commentators placed blame not so much on Moshe himself but rather on the circumstances of his leadership and relationship to that generation of Jews, those that now
would have to enter the Land of Israel, conquer and settle it. For various reasons, among them the awe and reverence that this new generation would grant to Moshe would border on the cult of personality, if not even idolatry he would no longer be treated as a human being, but would be elevated to the status of a deity. If nothing else Judaism is certainly an iconoclastic faith where human beings, no matter how great and holy they may be, remain human beings. However we view what the ultimate cause of Moshe’s fate was – some even attributing it to his being prone to anger – the pathos of the situation is inescapable, even to us removed from the event by many millennia. Reaching and living in the Promised Land was the goal that he had striven for his entire lifetime. That it was denied to him on the threshold of the entry of the Jewish people into their promised homeland, makes the event doubly sad and emotionally disturbing.
We all sympathize with our great leader and teacher but there is a great lesson of faith taught to us by the narrative of this incident. Human beings always attempt to ascribe simple and uncomplicated motives to human behavior, and even have the arrogance to do so regarding G-d as well. Upon reflection we can all recognize that there are many different factors and motives, causes and effects, which influence our choices in life and our behavior. But we are always hard-pressed to pull all the strings together and truly analyze our motives. It is only our Creator, Who, so to speak, sees the whole picture, knows all of the inner workings of the human psyche and soul and is able to judge correctly all of the issues involved in human behavior. This may be the ultimate reason why we are commanded to accept G-d’s judgment in all matters, even when it is beyond our rational understanding. Shabbat shalom.

he three week period which commence with the seventeenth of Tammuz and conclude after the ninth of Av has historically been a difficult time for Klal Yisrael. The Gemara (Ta’anis 26a-b) informs us that five misfortunes befell our ancestors on each of those dates. On the seventeenth of Tammuz, the luchos were broken, the daily sacrifice was discontinued (shortly before Churban bayis sheni), a breach was made in the city (the wall around the Har Habayis was breached on that same date), Apustamus (a Greek officer during the second commonwealth) burnt a Torah scroll or scrolls, and placed an idolatrous image in the heichal. On the ninth of Av it was decreed that (Bnei Yisrael) should not enter the (Promised) Land (for forty additional years, following the incident of the meraglim), both batei mikdash were destroyed, Beitar was captured (following the failed revolt of Bar Kochva), and Yerushalayim was plowed up. From the Torah’s perspective, it certainly cannot be considered coincidental that all of these tragic events occurred during this particular period, and specifically on these dates. Surely, Hashem intended to relay an important message to us. In order to understand this message, let us examine the explanations
of Chazal for the destruction of each bais hamikdash. Why was the first sanctuary destroyed? Because of three (evil) things that prevailed there: idolatry, immorality, and bloodshed… But why was the second sanctuary destroyed, since in that time they were occupying themselves with Torah, (observance of) mitzvos, and the practice of charity? At that time causeless hatred (sin’as chinam) prevailed. That teaches you that causeless hatred is considered of equal gravity with the three sins of idolatry, immorality, and bloodshed together. (Yoma 9b) It is noteworthy that despite their active violation of the three cardinal sins of idolatry, immorality, and bloodshed, those who lived during the first commonwealth were still collectively on a significantly higher spiritual level than their successors. It was they, not their successors, who merited an open revelation of Hashem’s presence. In five areas the first Bais HaMikdash differed from the second: in the aron, the kapores (aron-cover), the keruvim (the first three are considered as one), the fire, the Shechina, the spirit of prophecy, and the urim v’tumim. (Yoma 21b) More importantly, they were forced to endure a much shorter exile (70 years to nearly two millennia), and knew from the outset as to how long their exile would last. The former ones whose iniquity was revealed (by not hiding their misdeeds) had their end revealed
(through prophecy); the latter ones whose iniquity was not revealed have their end still unrevealed. (Yoma 9b) The obvious question is why is that so? After all, how can the three cardinal sins for which one is required to give up his life rather than violate (yehareig v’al ya’avor – see Sanhedrin 74a) be only equal to (or perhaps even better than) the transgression of sin’as chinam? I would like to suggest two possible approaches to answer this question. One is based on the idea that sin’as chinam really is not a graver sin than the “big three”. The reason as to why it brought upon the current, seemingly endless golus was the fact that it destroyed the communal framework necessary to overcome our personal deficiencies, leaving us susceptible to the rigors of individual assessment. The same idea can be observed regarding the two sinful generations of antiquity, the eras of Noach and Nimrod. The people of each period were punished severely for their respective misdeeds (deluge and dispersion). However, when one considers the nature of each one’s primary cheit, Nimrod’s generation emerges as the more decadent of the two. While the people of Noach’s time were wicked to each other (“And the world was filled with violence (I.e. theft)” – Bereishis 6:11), those from Nimrod’s time actually rebelled against Hashem Himself! (See Rashi to Bereishis 11:1) Still, it was the for-
mer, rather than the latter, which was completely annihilated. Rashi explains why this was the case. Now which (sins) were worse, those of the generation of the flood or those of the generation of the dispersion? The former did not stretch forth their hands against Hashem, whereas the latter did stretch forth their hands against Hashem, to wage war against Him. Nevertheless, the former were drowned, while the latter did not perish from the world. (The reason for this) is because the generation of the flood was comprised of robbers and there was strife between them, and therefore they were destroyed. But these behaved with love and friendship among themselves… How hateful is strife and how great is peace! (Rashi to Bereishis 11:9, quoting Bereishis Rabbah 38:6) Despite the fact that they were, as a whole, less sinful than the generation of dispersion, Noach’s generation was completely destroyed. The reason for this was because they failed to foster the requisite degree of love, peace and harmony with each other. Conversely, the dor haflaga excelled in this area. As a result, they were not destroyed, despite their sinful, rebellious nature. Getting in Our Enemies’ Heads
THE BALTIMORE JEWISH HOME

n extension of deception in warfare is psychological operations. Getting in the head of the enemy and civilians living in enemy lands has been around since wars have been recorded by historians. The ancient Egyptians used chariots with spikes on the wheels and their enemies would flee the battlefield. Many conquerors, including Alexander the Great and the Hittites (Chitim), would integrate among beaten territories so that they would be of help in future battles. Today PsyOps (short for psychological operations) is a major part of modern armies, and the U.S. military has placed them under Special Operations Command. The Department of Defense defines PsyOps as “planned operations to convey selected information and indicators to foreign audiences to influence their emotions, motives, objective reasoning, and ultimately the behavior of foreign governments, organizations, groups, and individuals. The purpose of psychological operations is to induce or reinforce foreign attitudes and behavior favorable to the originator’s objectives.” There are three types of PsyOps: White, Gray and Black. White PsyOps is done officially by the government

and can be traced to governmental sources. Gray PsyOps usually can’t be traced to the official source but to some middle “agency.” These false third parties are used when the target is non-hostile or indigenous and not totally accepting of the main source. Black PsyOps are done when the target is hostile and can’t be traced to the source in any way. It is a form of intellectual and political subversion. Any way to get to the enemy has been used, including leaflets, radio and TV broadcasts, newspapers, mail, social media, poster, billboards and phone calls, among other tactics. During WWII, leaflets were dropped from bombers with many different types of messages. Some over Germany said that the Nazis were losing power and to give up hope. Leaflets were dropped over Japanese troop concentrations stating that the bearer can surrender without shame and would be treated well. This rarely worked as almost all Japanese were schooled in the Bushido Code to die for the emperor instead of shaming your family by surrendering. Radio messages as well as mail were ways to reach the public in enemy territories. Tanks with loud speakers were sent out towards the end of the war with messages for

POWs saying that the war was over. This caused many German soldiers to surrender. PsyOps worked really well in Italy as well but the Japanese seemingly were impervious to this type of warfare. The OSS, the grandfather unit to the CIA, ran these operations among their many duties (they mainly engaged in spying, sabotage, training indigenous soldiers and other like operations). Leaflet drops and loudspeaker operations were escalated during the Cold War with units specifically dedicated to PsyOps created for the first time. Within 24 hours of President Truman declaring war on Korea, leaflets were dropped over South Korea saying that a state of war existed and the U.S. will help those opposing Communism. By the end of the war, over a billion leaflets were dropped over Korea with a variety of messages. They ranged from cartoons, to messages of despair, to “if you surrender now we’ll treat you humanly.” Just knowing that American forces were in the area was enough for some Viet Cong (South Vietnamese Communist fighters) to stop fighting. Navy SEALs had the practice of leaving a “calling card” whenever they killed an enemy in a covert mission. The card said things like “You will be
next unless you stop fighting, Sincerely The Men With Green Faces” (SEALs painted their faces green for camouflage). In December 1989, the U.S. invaded Panama to take down Dictator Manuel Noriega. At first he disappeared so the American forces focused on capturing his associates. In an operation called Ma Bell, phone calls were made by Spanish speaking officers and told the associates that they must surrender immediately with all of their men or face the consequences. The result was fast coming and very effective. Thousands of enemy troops, guns and over a dozen Noriega cronies were captured. No American casualties came from these operations. Capturing Noriega himself was a different story as he had disappeared during the invasion. Five days later he was seen in the Vatican’s embassy, where American soldiers could not enter. Diplomatic efforts with the Vatican failed so PsyOps were called to work. Loud music was played 24 hours a day but was stopped after three days when the Vatican complained to President Bush. Then the U.S. Army found shocking material in his personal effects that pointed that he was a sick (in the head) and

bassy and immediately was tackled by American soldiers. He served time in the U.S. and in France and is now in a Panamanian prison on human rights violation charges. Blu-82 bombs are more
sic and only were allowed to watch Iraqi propaganda material during Saddam’s regime. This exposure “softened” them up and they readily gave over vital information to Coalition interrogators. There were reports that PsyOps soldiers were behind the toppling of Saddam’s statue in Firdos Square. Radio and TV messages were broadcast to the general Iraqi public, and newspapers were handed out to civilians with pro-American views. The missions of PsyOps can be summed in their recruitment listing. The job duties include “research and analyze methods of influencing foreign population from a variety of information sources. Operate and maintain equipment such as ground tactical vehicles and shelter systems, loudspeak-
er systems, state of the art computers, analog and digital recording and playback devices and communication systems. Travel to overseas locations in peace, crisis and conflict to assist U.S. and foreign governments, militaries and civilian populations.” Most are based out of Fort Bragg, NC, although the navy maintains a PsyOps unit, and is a vital element of the Special Forces community. As time goes by more and more of their operations become public and we know how important they are to the safety of all Americans. Avi Heiligman is a weekly contributor to The Jewish Home. A few were used with one unknowing British operator calling into headquarters, “Those blokes just nuked the place!” Leaflets were dropped in some military-heavy areas saying that they were due for a 12,000 pound warhead Daisy Cutter. Thousands of Iraqi soldiers surrendered in droves to avoid the bombing that never came. Citizens turning on their TVs and radios listened to prerecorded messages prepared by PsyOps called the Voice of the Gulf. PsyOps also used loud music and TV to interrogate Iraqi prisoners during the Iraq War. They hadn’t been exposed to heavy metal mu-

“Say What?!”
JULY 21, 2016
For all of this loss, for all of this grief, for all of the cynicism, the tragedy in Benghazi has wrought upon America, I blame Hillary Clinton. I blame Hillary Clinton personally for the death of my son. In an email to her daughter shortly after the attack, Hillary Clinton blamed it on terrorism. But when I saw Hillary Clinton at Sean’s coffin ceremony, just days later, she looked me squarely in the eye and told me a video was responsible. Since then, I have repeatedly asked Hillary Clinton to explain to me the real reason why my son is dead. I’m still waiting.

Dating Dialogue
What Would You Do If… Moderated by Jennifer Mann, LCSW of The Navidaters
B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M
Dear Navidaters,
I’ve been dating now for about three years. I get set up a lot and most of them typically last for two or three dates. But there have been three separate women whom I dated for longer and things were going along really nicely. Until my problem kicked in. My problem is that I don’t seem to know how to seal the deal. I don’t know how to transition the conversation from the kind of shallow talk that goes on during early dates to meaningful conversation. I’m never sure what questions are too personal and what I should or shouldn’t say that is maybe too revealing about myself. So these relationships that seem to have so much potential initially, tend to eventually pitter out because they go nowhere meaningful. By the way, it’s not like I think of myself as a shallow person. I’ve worked on myself for many years, trying to grow as a person in important ways. But when it comes to taking what I’ve learned about myself into a conversation with a woman who I’m dating, I get very uncomfortable and unsure of what to say. I don’t even recognize myself on these dates. I was recently set up with Sarah, who seems like such a wonderful, sweet person. We’ve gone out twice already, so I already know what schools she’s gone to, which camps, where she’s lived, how many siblings she has, what her career goals are and so on. But I don’t really know what’s in her heart and I’m not sure how to get inside her heart. Any suggestions you have for me would be greatly appreciated.
The feedback from our readers has been remarkable. In order to facilitate further discussion, you can now continue the conversation anonymously on our website. into your emotions, feelings, insecurities and yourself. That’s big, especially for a man. Secondly, I am impressed that you actually want to do something about it instead of pointing the finger at the girls you are dating. Which means you are a reflective, growth-oriented man. So I think you should be honest and open and tell it like it is. Tell Sara how you are feeling and that you feel you are stumbling in the area of digging deeper, and maybe with her help, you can begin the process. I think (and I believe most people agree), that it’s refreshing to see the vulnerable part in others. And it will be interesting and helpful to see how she reacts to that and what buttons you’ve pushed in her. Why don’t you talk about common values that you may or may not share? See if you can come up with either similar or even different ones. Values can be volunteering, family-centered living, political affiliation, healthy living, etc. See if you can come up with lifestyle similarities and differences like music, books, gym, love of food, traveling, etc. You can talk about how you envision your Shabbos table to look like – guests, dvar Torah, etc. Ask each other, “Do you think you are an introvert or extrovert?” “Do you consider yourself an emotional or intellectual thinker?” These type of questions shouldn’t be too difficult. I find that when I speak to my kallahs and ask them those questions about their chossonim, they don’t always have the answers. I tell them that now would be the time to find out and even if you ask it in an awkward way – it’s O.K. You can laugh at yourself. And observe how they react to your discomfort.

and change. It’s our reactions to other people’s thinking and a respectful understanding of the way they think and come to that thinking that matters. The couple is still talking, still happy, and, believe it or not, well over a decade later, still smitten. Your point on a date is to get so comfortable with someone, to have such a good time with them, that eventually you get to know what’s inside that person’s heart. Play the board game. Go for the long walk. Get a drink on the boardwalk. And ask her questions, open ones. “How was your day?” “What did you do?” “How did you feel when that happened?” Say things like, “It must be hard when…” or “That’s really amazing that you can…” or “What made you decide on that?” “That’s such an interesting way of thinking/dealing with…” If there’s a relationship to be had here, you will find long conversations evolving. And you’ll take your cues from her: you’ll ask additional questions once you hear her answers. A final note: I know a girl who was a Super Dater. Each boy she went out with wanted to marry her. How did she do it? Her goal with each date was to be a hostess and make the person feel special and good on the date. Super Dater also prepared. She kept a small piece of paper on her all week and would write short notes about things that came up during the week: an interesting story or encounter, a question that came up with a friend, a discussion with a co-worker. She brought these up on her dates. These sparked larger conversations, more philosophical ones, and kept the conversation more interesting and engaging than lokshen and theoretical siblings. You may want to try this yourself….

t’s great that you recognize this issue and are willing to hear suggestions. It’s up to you to act on the suggestions of the panelists and professionals who respond in this column. Social skills and dating strategies are not hard to learn but they take practice. With time, you will be smoother at starting topics and talking about bigger topics. Preparing is key. Read up on some current events topics and prepare lists of envisioning topics such as how would you see yourself in a new community, as a parent, as a married child of middle age parents. Asking follow up questions can be practiced. There are games that people take along on dates for getting to know each other. “Perfect Matches,” developed by Joy Lieber, is popular with the frum crowd. A good dating coach will help you, too. I sense that there is something within you that is keeping you from opening up as well as getting into deeper realms with your dates. Perhaps you need to do some questioning of yourself and explore whether this just happens on dates. Are you unsure of yourself? Are you afraid to open up? Do you want to keep something inside? Do you have trouble with making new friends? Do you freeze at social occasions? Do you strike up conversations in shul, with co-workers and at simchas? Are these other areas difficult for you or is this problem happening just on dates? Me thinks otherwise. Dig deep and work on it with appropriate help.
questions: (Food) Do you like lokshen? (Answer: no.) (Family) Do you have a brother? (Answer: no.) (Philosophy) If you had a brother, would he like lokshen? (Bada-bing.) So you’ve managed the food and family and you’ve prolonged it from two questions to two dates. Now, you want to know what’s in her heart. You want philosophy, deep thoughts, the deep meaningful conversations that will take your conversation from superficial to something special. Now, my question to you is this: have you ever really gotten to know what’s in someone’s heart after meeting them twice? The answer is: probably not. You’ve gotten to know people well first by hanging out with them and spending time with them. And then, once you’re spending time with them, you get to know them by listening to them and knowing when to pause, when to listen, when to ask the gentle questions because you see the person wants to talk or needs some support. We pressure young people in our community to have “deep conversations,” as if these conversations will indicate to us how our future lives with these people will be. I remember distinctly one shidduch that my daughter made. The boy was completely smitten with the young woman in question. They enjoyed hours of talking about seemingly superficial things like their favorite books and they spent more hours playing board games together (they were both Trivial Pursuit fanatics). They just loved spending time together. But they’d never spoken about “deep” issues or their feelings about Big Important things like Israel, Zionism, Torah, etc. Mr. Smitten called my daughter in a panic about this: what do I do? My daughter told him that it didn’t matter. Given: you both have gone to seminary or yeshiva so you both love and believe in Torah. You think tzedakah is good. You love Israel. What matters is that you know that you’re both caring, sensitive people, that you respect each other and admire each other and that you’re dedicated to each other. Philosophies evolve

ere are a few suggestions you can try to move your dates into a more serious direc-
tion. Tell her that you want to learn more about her. She will love hearing that, though by telling her this, you should either have a question already planned that you would like to ask her, or you can suggest that on your next date, she comes prepared with one and you will do the same. See how that works for you. If it is successful, you can either do it again or see if questions and/or conversations come naturally on its own from there. Remember, you can always start off your question with “if this is too personal,” or “if you aren’t ready to talk about this subject or any

or what it’s worth, I have worked with single people who come in for therapy or coaching because they “don’t know how to seal the deal” or they want help “sealing the deal.” Oftentimes, not knowing how to seal the deal is code for “I don’t know how to form a meaningful connection” or “I am uncomfortable sharing of myself” as you allude to in your email. From you, I am hearing a lot of self-censorship going on. “Should I say this?” “When can I say that?” There is so much going on in your mind on your dates… you are secretly hard at work on your dates. This leaves you unable to relax and enjoy the company of the woman you are with. And I know this because you said that you don’t even recognize yourself on these dates. You seem like a fabulous, self-aware guy who is having some trouble in the connection department, and maybe in the self-esteem department as well (though I have been wrong before). Let’s talk about connection and why we feel connected to certain people and not others. True and meaningful connection is built upon two people slowly revealing themselves to each other. When we share intimate details about ourselves, we are inherently telling this person, “I trust you.”
I trust you enough to tell you my secret, my feelings, my desire, my shame, my guilt, my past, my quirks – you fill in the blank. The person being told the information feels special because she has been chosen to guard this intimate information, and it is then on her to return the message of trust. Do this enough times and voila … you have a relationship. But, we can only do this when we feel comfortable in our own skin. Before you can understand why you are having some issues getting into Sarah’s heart or the hearts of the women you’ve dated before her, I think it is worthwhile to explore the discomfort you feel when it is time to share, reveal or trust a woman. My intuition tells me your entry point to moving forward is for you to gain a greater understanding of your self-described discomfort when it is time to open up about yourself. What is it that makes you uncomfortable? I don’t know what they are, but I am certain that attached to the feeling of discomfort are some automatic thoughts. For some it might be, “Uh oh! She’s going to want to get engaged soon!” Or,
subject brought up, then it’s okay to say no and we can discuss it when you do feel it is the right time for you.” Then you automatically safeguard yourself from asking a question that is too private and you also win brownie points by showing her that you cherish her and her feelings. Malka Schulman, a CTACC and the creator of the Dating 4 Marriage Action Cards, actually takes you step-by-step through your dates with probing questions to ask with the goal of sealing the deal with the right woman. If you need the one-on one guidance, then a dating coach would be the ultimate way to go in order
“If I really let her in, she will see how unloveable I truly am.” Or, “Once she knows about ‘X’ she will think I’m such an idiot.” And still, for others, it is, “No one talked about feelings or personal stuff in my family. I feel awkward and uncomfortable talking about that stuff.” Try to find your automatic thoughts that pop up around the feeling of discomfort. This is the area that warrants some exploration and newfound awareness. When you have a handle on what you are dealing with, it is then that you can implement change! Because this has been ongoing, I think it would be helpful to talk this out with a therapist. For some people, specifically men, the idea of going for therapy is outrageous. I approach it from a practical standpoint. What you are doing isn’t working. You want change. What is the quickest way to get the desired outcome? (I’m trying to appeal to “guy think” over here. How’d I do?) Your level of self-awareness and your desire to “seal the deal,” er, connect, tells me that you have every reason to feel hopeful that you will have a meaningful relationship with a woman. Remember, you are only two dates in and Sarah wouldn’t be revealing what is in her heart to you right now. That revelation takes a bit more time for some people. Some final thoughts for you and the readers: You are allowed to be imperfect. You are human; you have a story, you

have a past and you have quirks. This is OK. If it is helpful, pretend the person you are dating is a friend. A huge component of a marital relationship is a solid friendship. How did you become friends with your close guy friends? Just because she has long hair and wears lipstick doesn’t make her a foreign creature. She’s just a person. Just like your friends. She goes to the bathroom, she fights with her mother, she has struggles, she is probably carrying a secret … just like your friends … just like you. As relationships progress, the natural order of things is to become more emotionally intimate. Prepare yourself, either on your own, or with a therapist for this intimacy. You are allowed to ask personal questions. And she will be asking the same of you. This is a relationship. If this idea feels foreign, undoable, or you are fumbling for words, take my advice and talk to someone. Good luck! Sincerely, Jennifer

Choose Your Own Adventure By Eytan Kobre
Life is the sum of all your choices. - Albert Camus
B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M
M
y son recently was reading Return to Atlantis, one of those Choose-Your-OwnAdventure books. Written from a second-person point of view, the reader assumes the role of the protagonist and makes choices that determine the outcome of the character and the plot. Apparently, rather than discovering untold riches, my son’s character met an untimely demise and was vaporized. When I asked my son if he was disappointed, he shook his head “no” and explained that he subsequently perused all the alternate endings and simply chose the one that had his character ruling the world. All’s well that ends well, I guess. Life, however, is not so simple. When Balak first asked Bilam to curse the Jewish people, G-d warned Bilam not to join Balak (Bamidbar 22:12). But, curiously, G-d told Bilam just a short while later, “Arise and go with them” (Bamidbar 22:20). What changed?
Nothing. G-d gives us the prescription for life, telling us what to do and what not to do. But G-d also gives us the power of choice, and He won’t stop us from making our own choices, however misguided they may be. G-d didn’t want Bilam to curse the Jewish people, but Bilam remained resolute in his desire to join Balak, and G-d would not stand in his way. In the end, Bilam’s own choices led him down a path of destruction – hung by his own petard, as it were – confirming that “a person is led down the path he wishes to go down” (Makos 10b; Bamidbar Rabba 20:12; see Tosfos, Shabbos 87a; Tosfos, Yevamos 62a). G-d gives us choices, and He won’t stand in the way of them, whatever the consequences. And, ultimately, we become the products of our own choices. Indeed, “every person has the ability to do good or bad; as such, the one who sins hurts himself… know that it is in your control and you will ultimately be required to give an accounting [of your own choices]” (Rambam, Teshuva 5:1-4). In that sense, we don’t just make our choices – we are
our choices. As a Danny Devito character once opined, “The choices we make dictate the lives we lead.” When Akavya ben Mehalel was on his deathbed, his son asked him for a recommendation letter so that the other sages of the time would accept him among their ranks (Ediyos 5:7). Akavya refused. “Ma’asecha yekarvucha u’maasecha yerachkucha,” he told his son. Your actions will bring you close, and your actions will distance you. You future is in your hands. Your choices and your actions will determine your fate. 1,500 years later, a man asked R’ Yehonasan Eybeshutz for a letter of approbation to bring to the Vilna Gaon to gain the latter’s approval. R’ Yehonasan wrote the letters “mem” and “yud” on each side of a piece of paper, folded it in half, and handed it to the man, who was puzzled but too daunted to ask for an explanation. Upon receiving the man and review the letter, the Vilna Gaon smiled knowingly. “Your master’s letter is short on words but long on substance. The letters stand for Maasecha Yekarvucha and Maasecha Yerachku-
cha. A most apt approbation. Because it is indeed your actions and your choices that will determine your standing here.” Many parents have a remarkable penchant for divorcing the choices they make for their children from the nearly-inevitable outcomes of those choices. They send their children to unsuitable schools and camps, permit them to associate with toxic friends, and tolerate their unbecoming behavior. But when the child becomes the product of these choices, the parents express shock and horror. Too often, as parents, we forget that our children largely are the products of our choices. A father once bemoaned to the Chofetz Chaim that his son had grown wayward in his late teens and early twenties. “You were the one who sent him away to the morally-corrosive and secular university in Berlin,” the Chofetz Chaim retorted. “What did you think was going to happen?” The sinning process is described as “the eyes see, the heart desires, and the body acts” (Rashi, Bamidbar 15:39; Tanchuma, Bamidbar 15). Yet the Torah warns us not to “wander after your
hearts and after your eyes” – the heart first and then the eyes – because even before the eyes see, the heart already has decided whether to look (Malbim, Bamidbar 15:39). By the time you are ready to look and consider your options, you’ve already made the decision. As my wife chides me when I consider cheating on a diet, “You’ve already decided to cheat; the only question now is pizza or hamburgers.” Indeed, this underpins the very notion of reward and punishment. Once G-d gave us the commandments, “no longer does bad and good emanate from Him; rather, the good deeds and the sins choose their own [outcomes]...it all depends on your actions” (Ha’amek Davar, Devarim 11:26). Reward and punishment are found in the acts themselves. Contrary to popular mores, reward and punishment are not strictly external manifestations of G-d’s perfect justice; often, rather, they are simply the natural consequences of our own actions. (Perhaps this explains why “the reward for a good deed is a good deed, and the reward for a sin is sin” (Avos 4:2).) Consider the smoker who develops lung cancer or

Wow. Tough choice. Blessing or curse? Hmmm. I think I’ll take blessing. What’s the catch? The catch was that G-d wanted an answer “today.” Yet he used the visual of Gerizim and Eval – mountains far from where the Jewish people stood at the time. How

to see them? How could the Jewish people have been expected to make such a momentous decision “today”? And there’s the rub. Of course blessing trumps curse. It always does. That’s no challenge. The challenge is what we do today. The challenge is in living a life that recognizes that our
today’s choices and tomorrow’s consequences is not always readily discernible. Sometimes we get so caught up in being the “chosen” people that we forget that, at our core, we are the “choosing” people – a people that strives to distinguish ourselves on the basis of the choices we make today, and our understanding of the impact those choices will have on tomorrow. As for which choices to make? That adventure is up to you.

choices today decide our tomorrow. The challenge is to make the right choices even when it is not crystal clear which choices are right. The challenge, in short, is to lead lives that embody Eleanor Roosevelt’s observation that “I am who I am today because of the choices I made yesterday.” * * * Life is an unending succession of forks in the road. G-d affords us the privilege and opportunity of choice for our benefit (Michtav M’Eliyahu, Vol. V, pg. 160). He urges us to make the right choices – not because of what He does with our wrong choices but because of what we become from our wrong choices. Political Crossfire
In Our Moment of Division, Who will Lead? By Michael Gerson
O
n April 1968 ,4 – the day that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed by a sniper – Robert Kennedy gave (arguably) one of the greatest American speeches not given by a president. Speaking in a tough section of Indianapolis, Kennedy informed the shocked crowd that King was dead, quoted Aeschylus on the wisdom that comes “drop by drop” from pain, and set out the ideal of a politics that could “make gentle the life of this world.” Kennedy urged Americans “to make an effort to understand” – offering empathy as the best hope in “rather difficult times.” Indianapolis was calm that night, but there were soon riots in 110 other American cities. So, on April 1968 ,5, Kennedy spoke in Cleveland, giving a brief speech, undeservedly neglected. “No wrongs have ever been righted by riots and civil disorders,” he said. “A sniper is only a coward, not a hero; and an uncontrolled, uncontrollable mob is only the voice of madness, not the voice of the people.” This balance between empathy and a concern for order is what many leaders strive for today. Our country is less riven than in 1968, but our leaders are not as
skilled, at least when it comes to rhetoric. We are not asking for Aeschylus, and would probably mock his appearance in a speech today, but it would be nice if politicians did not immediately fall into partisan ruts, or post Facebook banalities. What American leader is equal to explaining this moment and moving us forward? The question just echoes. President Obama, as he demonstrated in a fine speech on the 50th anniversary of Selma, can sometimes find the words. But he has become symbolic of the limits of symbolism. Many thought his election was a fundamental turning point on issues of race. But just 15 percent of Americans now believe his presidency has brought blacks and whites together. It is a failure not entirely his fault, but it contributes to an atmosphere of cynicism. Hillary Clinton argues that we are “stronger together,” but she remains one of the most divisive and distrusted politicians in America. Speaker Paul Ryan spoke movingly on the floor of the House in reaction to Dallas, urging Americans to defy the predictions of
division – but he is at least partially discredited by his endorsement of a presidential candidate who thrives on discord. Chuck Todd of NBC News wonders if support for Trump will be a “stain” or a “tattoo.” I would bet a tattoo, leaving only a handful of Republicans unmarked by exclusion. Trump is the entrepreneur of enmity, employing ethnic stereotypes on the first day of his campaign, and breaking through imagined “ceilings” of GOP support by encouraging fear of Muslims after the San Bernardino attack. Some in the conservative media are actively practicing a white identity politics – witness the Drudge Report’s headline “Black Lives Kill.” The whole political enterprise of turning out the white vote – the only real hope of the Trump campaign – is morally problematic and dangerous. In fact, there are people on the left and right who benefit from encouraging just enough division, just enough fear, to motivate their supporters, without tipping them over into violence. They are playing with fire in a parched and withered land. Even as an outsider to the world of liberal advocacy,
I think it is possible to see some troubling trends. Civil rights movement-era figures thought they could improve society by changing institutions –passing legislation or winning judicial battles. And the aspirations of the movement were carried in the durable institution of the Afri-
systemic racism, most of us have the ability to defy our times and reach out across lines of race and religion. And religious people have a particular calling in this area. A pastor friend who runs a retreat center in rural Virginia found an abandoned slave cemetery on the property. His religious

But without a belief in reform, how is justified anger channeled into constructive purposes? “Maybe it just sags/ like a heavy load,” offered Langston Hughes. “Or does it explode?” Even if we cannot, as individuals, hope to change
community reached out to African-American leaders and together they rededicated the cemetery, asking for forgiveness and praying for healing. None who participated came away unchanged. While waiting for leaders, perhaps the most practical and hopeful path is to become them. (c) 2016, Washington Post Writers Group

he dog days are here, and multiplexes across America are delighting audiences with the usual summer fare. Down to the left in Theatre Three, a motley crew of undersea chums are busy finding their friend Dory. Across the hall in Theatre Five, Universal Studios has ripped off reimagined the Toy Story premise with pets instead of playthings. Around the corner in Theatre Six, you can watch the earthlings unite once again to defeat the aliens in Independence Day: Resurgence 3D. (Don’t forget your $10 tub of popcorn and your $6 soda!) Director Steven Soderbergh has shot his share of thrillers, including the Oscar-winning Traffic and the casino-caper series Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, and Ocean’s Thirteen. Now he’s launched work on a different kind of thriller that the critics at the IRS will be sure to applaud: an as-yet unnamed project based on (you guessed it) the pulse-pounding Panama Papers. Need a quick refresher? Back in April, the International Consortium for Investigative Journalism released bombshell results from a year spent combing through 11.5 million documents leaked from the Panamanian law firm of Mossack Fonseca. The pa-
pers revealed the owners of 214,000 mostly-secret shell companies. Mossack Fonseca’s clients included the king of Saudi Arabia, the presidents of Argentina and Ukraine, and the former prime ministers of Georgia,
owned millions of dollars’ worth of Icelandic bank bonds while he was in charge of negotiating their bailout. (Oops.) And it’s hard to believe that Mallory Chacón Rossell, an “alleged” money launderer tied to Mexican
The prime minister of Iceland resigned after his citizens learned that he and his wife secretly owned millions of dollars’ worth of Icelandic bank bonds while he was in charge of negotiating their bailout. (Oops.) Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, and (again) Ukraine. There’s nothing inherently illegal about using offshore entities. Investors often find it easier to own assets outside their own countries through shell companies, and there are legitimate tax advantages as well. But not everyone unmasked by the leak appears to have been operating entirely aboveboard. The prime minister of Iceland resigned after his citizens learned that he and his wife secretly
druglord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, was using her offshore entity to hold, say, bank CDs. Soderbergh previously turned the price-fixing scandal at Archer Daniels Midland into a serviceable film called The Informant, and even convinced Matt Damon to star. In this film, he’ll be dramatizing the upcoming book Secrecy World, which recounts the tale of the journalists who broke the story. So we won’t just be watching a bunch of lawyers
in tropical-weight pinstripes filing corporate documents with various governments. Casting hasn’t yet been announced. But there are some stars who may not want to audition. Emma Watson is rumored to have made £24 million for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series. But her name turned up in the Papers as beneficiary of a British Virgin Islands company. (No points for Gryffindor!) And martial-arts star Jackie Chan owned at least six BVI companies, including one called Jackie Chan Ltd. (If he really was trying to hide something, he probably should have worked harder on a name.) We have no idea how much Soderbergh will make from this latest project. But we trust he’s smart enough to realize he doesn’t have to hide it offshore to pay less tax on it. All he really needs is a plan. Make sure you have one if you want to pay less without winding up in an unwelcome spotlight! Allan J Rolnick is a CPA who has been in practice for over 30 yea rs in Queens, NY. Tzvi Tzur An IDF Hero

ommanders of militaries usually only become famous if they lead forces during large scale wars. Imagine Generals George Washington, Ulysses S. Grant or Dwight D. Eisenhower being commanders of the U.S. Army when there was relative calm. All of them had great records as junior officers in previous wars but were relatively unknown until they led armies in three of the bloodiest wars America has ever fought. Other commanders have come and gone because, although they may have been excellent generals, they didn’t have a war to “showcase” their abilities. If this had been the case for Washington, Grant and Eisenhower, they wouldn’t have been hailed as war heroes and would have had a much tougher time being elected president. Israel had several of these commanders, including the sixth IDF Chief of Staff Tzvi Tzur. Born in Ukraine, which in 1923 was part of the USSR, Tzvi Tzur’s family moved to Eretz Yisrael when he was two-years-old. Then under the British mandate of Palestine, Jews formed several units to protect cities and towns from hostile Arabs. Tzur joined the Haganah in the late 1930s to protect his fellow Jews from vicious Arab rioters. In 1946 he was arrested along with 2,700 other
Jewish underground soldiers by the British and was released two months later. The raid became known as the Black Sabbath and was one of the reasons behind the Irgun’s bombing of the British headquarters in the King David Hotel. With the expected departure of the British in the first half of 1948, the underground movements started to formulate regular fighting units. The Givati Brigade was organized in December 1947 and placed under the command of Shimon Avidan. Originally there were five battalions with a sixth being created on May 30. Tzur was given command of the 54th Battalion and participated in several operations. One of the missions was called Operation Pleshet. Along with four fighter planes led by American Lou Lenart and Ezer Weizman, the Egyptians were stopped by a place later called Ad Halom (“Thus Far” in English) in remembrance of the battle. Tzur’s battalion made a frontal assault in unknown territory and was outnumbered. They were forced to retreat when the Egyptians advanced on their positions with British armored vehicles. The Israelis suffered many casualties with more than half of them coming from the 54th Battalion. Even though the Givati Brigade lost the battle, the initiative in the war
went from the Egyptians going from an offensive war to a defensive stance. Commanders who create special units are always remembered for their daring and tenacity. Tzur put together a commando unit called Samson’s Foxes. Shu’alei Shimshon, their Hebrew name, was named after the story in Sefer Shoftim, had the insignia of a fox with a torch attached to its tail, and was a jeep reconnaissance platoon within the 54th Battalion. They took part in a series of engagements called the Battles of the Separation Corridor. After the war they were disbanded. Recently, the unit was revived within the Givati Brigade but its modus operandi is classified. After the war Tzur continued to help the IDF organize into a proper military defense mechanism and went to the U.S. to study military management. In 1958 he was appointed as the deputy chief of staff and spent time in France. In 1961 he was appointed as the chief of staff and made Yitzchak Rabin his deputy. While there were no major wars during his tenure, there were some border incidents with Syria in the Golan Heights. In 1962 Golani soldiers raided enemy outposts in retaliation for the shelling of villages. Tzur “beefed” up the military with new weapons and planes. The Dassault Mirage III fighters were
acquired from France in a move that was made public by Egyptian President Nasser. The Mirage III as well as two other Tzur acquisitions, the Centurion tank and the Hawk Surfaceto-Air missile, were vital in the IDF’s arsenal for both the Six Day and Yom Kippur Wars. Tzvi Tzur retired from the IDF in 1963 and entered the business world as a manager of Israel’s water supply company. It was short-lived, as he was put under pressure two years later to join David Ben Gurion’s political party and was elected to the Knesset. His tenure as a Knesset member lasted just a month but two years later he was asked by Moshe Dayan to become an advisor to the Minister of Defense. After seven years as an advisor, he held several top level positions in Israeli companies. Tzur died on December 28, 2004. Even though there was no major wars during his time as IDF’s Chief of Staff he saw a lot of action as a junior officer and, in many top Israeli official’s opinions, helped the IDF become a top notch military.
