us for over 2,000 years yet they have not become outdated or stale. They still reassure us like they did in the times of the Rambam and Rashi, Rabeinu Hakadosh and during the times of the second Beis Hamikdosh. They comfort us because we know that our daily struggles are temporary. Emotional, familial and financial challenges are not here to stay. Yes, today we need to do what we can but there will be a day when these struggles will simply go away. Knowing this gives us the sometimes super human strength needed to withstand temptation and overcome the urge to do what’s convenient and easy. We have much to make us proud. I doubt anyone alive at the time the above eternal words were said would have thought that two millennia later there would be Jews in Los Angeles, Montana, New York and indeed throughout the world who would be reading this Haftorah, drawing strength from it, as if the words were uttered today. Challenges abound just as in the past, perhaps now more than ever. Indeed, it says that Moshe Rabeinu was humbled when he saw the challenges with which the generation before the coming Moshiach would be faced. Still, the Torah is our life and the length of our days and we are 100% certain that the “cure was given before the illness.” The promise of a perfect world preceded the trials and suffering which followed and we are heading into the fulfillment of that original guarantee. Perhaps the events we are currently witnessing around the world is the fulfilment of a Medrash. Whatever it is, the pnimiyus, the inner meaning for us is definitely to take the coming seven Haftorahs of comfort to heart, knowing that just as the prophesies of destruction which preceded Tisha B’av were fulfilled, so too, please G-d, very soon in our days we will see the fulfillment of these prophesies ushering in a time when justice, truth and kindness will be the running currency on the street. We are ready, let us just open our doors and welcome it in. Wishing you a comforting and enjoyable Shabbos nachamu,

NWCP Bike Safety and Engraving Class Well Attended By: BJLife / Nachi Schachter BaltimoreJewishLife.com/Jeff Cohn

TIRED OF DISTRACTIONS IN YOUR HOME OFFICE?

T

he Northwest Citizens Patrol annual bike class was again a resounding success. Not only did we have a large turn-out, but Debby Baer, resident safety expert, said that this was the best group ever. The children were attentive; they behaved very well and asked great questions. The children enjoyed the class and learned a lot about bicycle and vehicle safety. This was the first time that NWCP police liaison officer, Robert Labar, taught the bike class and Mrs. Baer said that he did an ex-

cellent job. The class had a surprise visit from Mr. Jerry Shavrick, who with Project Ezra, started these bike classes for children many years ago. Mr. Shavrick was warmly greeted by the class and given a standing ovation. Baltimore technical expert, Avraham Klugman set up the sound system and told the class that this was actually the 31st year of the Bike classes. Some of the youngsters who attended the classes may have had parents who attended the classes decades ago. And the last important piece of the event was that each of the children left with a free coupon for a bag of popcorn compliments of The Candy Store.

Bikur Cholim of Baltimore “Changing of the Guard”

A

t an intimate gathering at the home of Bonnie and Joey Pollak, Bikur Cholim of Baltimore honored and thanked their devoted out-going board members: Yaakov Feinstein, chairman of the board; Sam Finkelstein, treasurer; Avi Bernstein, board member; Rabbi Zvi Teichman, board member and Rabbinical advisor. Each of these men has dedicated his time, talents, and heart to the behind the scenes operation of Bikur Cholim of Baltimore. Yaakov Feinstein, and his wife Adina along with a group of new volunteers were among the very first to accept the charge, from Rebbetzin Chana Weinberg, a”h, almost 10 years ago to continue the path she set forth of growing the Bikur Cholim of Baltimore that she helped create. Yaakov and Adina, together with many volunteers worked tireless-

ly and successfully to expand and enhance the Bikur Cholim of Baltimore that today benefits the cholim of our community and their families in such a vital and compassionate manner. Rabbi Zvi Teichman, Sam Finkelstein, and Avi Bernstein all joined the board, adding their individual and collective expertise to whatever was needed and have served with distinction for almost 6 years. Rabbi Pinchos Rabinowitz, executive director

of Bikur Cholim of Baltimore, presented each out-going member with a beautiful gift inscribed with the gratitude of their fellow board members. Bikur Cholim of Baltimore welcomes our new members as we “change the guard.” Our new members are: Eric Reitberger, president; Shloime Grunhut, treasurer; Dr. Kenny Freidman, board member; Rabbi Yosef Neuberger, board member. Although each of these men has

big shoes to fill, we know that these enthusiastic, professional individuals will serve to make our organization even stronger, enabling Bikur Cholim to fill the ever present and growing needs of our community. Bikur Cholim of Baltimore thanks our hundreds of volunteers that soldier the day to day work of this enormous mitzvah and chesed. New Law In Baltimore Bars Sodas From Kids’ Menus By: AP BaltimoreJewishLife.com/Jeff Cohn

B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M

R

estaurants in Baltimore are now officially barred from including sodas and other sugary drinks on kids’ menus, according to a city ordinance that went into effect Wednesday. Baltimore is now the biggest U.S. city and the first on the East Coast to pass this kind of measure, said Shawn McIntosh, director of the Maryland chapter of the Sugar Free Kids advocacy group. Seven California cities and Lafayette, Colorado, have enacted similar ordinances, according to health officials. Milk, 100 percent fruit juices, water, and flavored or sparkling water without added sweeteners must now be the default beverages for kids’ meals at Baltimore eateries. Mayor Catherine Pugh signed the legislation earlier this year. The ordinance is intended to stop youngsters’ overconsumption of sugary drinks, perceived as a key factor in high rates of chronic diseases such

as diabetes. “Taking out empty calories from sugary drinks is a powerful lifestyle change we can make to help our children to get and stay healthy. This law will help families make the healthy choice the easy choice,” Baltimore Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen said in a statement. One in four Baltimore children currently down at least one soda each day, according to Sugar Free Kids. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that one in three

school-aged kids in the city is obese. Baltimore restaurants that don’t comply with the ordinance will be faced with a $100 penalty, McIntosh said. She said eateries “have hopefully gotten on board” already and changed their printed menus for kids, but they’re not expected to have fully made that switch by Wednesday. “They have to at least put a sticker on, have signage. Their online menus have to be changed because that’s an easy fix. So they’re not expecting them to print all new menus by today,”

she said. Youngsters can still drink soda at city restaurants if an accompanying adult orders it for them. The “Healthy Beverages for Children’s Meals” ordinance was opposed by the Restaurant Association of Maryland. In a Wednesday email, association vice president Melvin Thompson said “public policy that interferes with the minutiae of restaurant operations exacerbates the business challenges already facing city restaurants.”

Kosher Certifier Reduces List Of Acceptable Starbucks Drinks By: AP

T

he story about Starbucks ending its Kosher friendly store program, is now a National story. The following is an unedited report from the Associated Press: A leading company in Kosher certification has dropped some Starbucks drinks from its acceptable consump-

tion list. The Baltimore Sun reports Star-K said this month it’s dropping drinks with “syrups, sauces, toppings, powders, soy or almond milk” after the coffee behemoth ended an expanded kosher certification program with the Baltimore-based company. Starbucks’ Americanos, espressos, cold brew coffee and iced lattes remain on Star-K’s kosher list. Rabbi Zvi Holland oversees Star-

K’s certification of Starbucks. He says the Seattle-based chain teamed up with Star-K to create a compliance program in late 2015. He says he thinks Starbucks ended it because “it’s hard for them to stick to.” Starbucks didn’t respond to the newspaper’s request for comment. An online petition calling for the reinstatement of the compliance program had amassed 8,900 signatures by Monday.

Schleifer Summer Lunch Initiative Hits Major Milestone

O

ver the past several years, families of the 5th District have become accustomed to being able to count on nutritious lunches for their children during the summer months. Today an initiative fought for by Councilman Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer, even before he ran for public office,

met what at first would have appeared to be an unrealistic goal. Over 100,000 free lunches have been served to children of the 5th District! The Councilman reflected, “my goal is and has always been, to make sure that the families and children of the 5th District have all the resources available afforded to them. It

is so satisfying to know that the summer lunch program has not only been successful, but continues to grow. I could not be prouder of attaining this milestone, because it means that so many children are enjoying nutritious lunches everyday!”

S

ince July 2004, STAR-K Kosher Certification has provided a premier training ground for Kashrus professionals, administrators, and field representatives, Rabbonim, Rebbeim, Kollel fellows, and others serving in klei kodesh, from around the world. The comprehensive analysis of pertinent Kashrus and halachic issues is presented by STAR-K’s Rabbinic staff members, including Rabbinic Administrator Rabbi Moshe Heinemann and President Dr. Avrom Pollak. The lectures are supplemented by a visit to a glatt kosher slaughter house, a hands-on vegetable checking practicum and behind-the-scenes tours of various STAR-K certified establishments and manufacturing plants. STAR-K Groomed for the World of Kashrus Rabbi Chaim Moishe Levy, Rav of Adath Yeshurun (IRG), in Zürich, Switzerland, attended the STAR-K Kashrus Training Program in 2006. “After 12 years in Kollel and 8 years as a high school magid shiur, I was thrust into the position as a Rabbi of a large Kehilla,” notes Rabbi Levy. “Included in my duties was running a Kashrus organization, something I had not trained for. My experience with the STAR-K was fantastic. I learned a tremendous amount about the practical aspects of hashgacha and still keep up a strong connection with the STAR-K Rabbonim.” Rabbi Zvi Solomon, shares, “STARK’s comprehensive Kashrus Training Program was a unique opportunity to be

exposed to all aspects of Kashrus certification, including the roles and responsibilities assumed by agency administrators. This was most beneficial for me when I was approached, at the end of my fulltime Kollel years in Boston, to join KVH Kosher as Rabbinical Coordinator. I have hakaras hatov to STAR-K for the educated decision I made to get involved in this unique form of tzorchei tzibur and for laying the seeds for my ability to help make a difference in the greater New England community and Klal Yisroel. I continue to enjoy a wonderful relationship with the very gracious STAR-K staff.” From Tarzana to Sao Paulo This year, Felipe Kleiman, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, traveled the farthest to attend the 15th Annual STAR-K Kashrus Training Program-- 4,751 miles. Mr. Kleiman has been involved in kosher meat production for 18 years; for 11 years, he ran kosher beef and poultry productions. Additionally, he works closely with Israel’s minister of agriculture in consulting for multi-million-dollar projects to adapt South American slaughter houses for kosher beef export to Israel. “I really enjoyed the program, especially the industrial shiurim and visits, since I am involved in the professional operational side of kosher production,” shares Mr. Kleiman, who deals with the engineering and management of production issues. Rabbi Mosheh Levihim, who left his native Iran as a young man, in 1983, to settle in the US, had a different motivation for attending the STAR-K Kashrus Training Program. As the Rav of a Sefardic shul, Beith David Education Center, and a Rebbe in Or Hachaim Academy in Tarzana, California, he made the cross-country trip to upgrade his kashrus knowledge gained from his semicha studies, 20 years ago. “So much has changed in the industry, since then,” says Rabbi Levihim. “I learned a lot—everything from how to apply what

I learned about toleim in a practical way to more efficient ways to kasher hotels and train my mashgichim. It was exactly what I was looking for. “I love the transparency that takes place at STAR-K,” continues Rabbi Levihim. “I asked a question and they were not shy about answering how they do things and how they arrived at their policies. It was eye-opening! I would love to come again—there is so much to learn. I was very impressed when one of the Kashrus Administrators, Rabbi Stern, gave me his business card and told me, ‘Call me anytime.’ It was amazing!” Rabbi Yisroel Frankel is a member of the South Bend Kollel in South Bend, Indiana, who is starting to teach. He signed up for the training program with the hope that he will one day become a Rav. He was especially appreciative of the slaughterhouse tour and the nikkur demo, which he felt brought his textual learning to life. “I felt like I gained a lot from attending the program,” shares Rabbi Frankel. “I became much more knowledgeable about the ins and outs of hashgacha, in general-- what goes into each thing and how to deal with things as they come up--and a lot of other things, like appliances. I was very touched by how everyone in the organization has no self-interest; all they care about is that things should be kosher, without ulterior motives. It’s a pure place.” STAR-K Kashrus Administrator Rabbi Zvi Goldberg, coordinator of the seminar, concludes, “After 15 years we turn around and realize we have trained hundreds of attendees, many of whom have significant involvement in Kashrus in the US and around the world. It’s heartwarming and we are grateful for the opportunity. It is a function of m’talmidai yoser m’kulam we learn from the insightful questions they ask, sometimes pointing out approaches we had not thought of. We wish them all much hatzlocho!”

Devastating Update on Klatzkin Family

THE BALTIMORE JEWISH HOME

JULY 26, 2018

M

any may recall the news in February of Beit Shemesh father of 9 Eliyahu Klatzkin. Klatzkin was diagnosed in 2016 with an aggressive case of cancer. For many months, the family fought for his survival, including flying to the United States to undergo extensive surgery to remove two cancerous tumors. After the tumors were removed, but the illness tragically remained, Klatzkin returned to Israel to begin what was then his only hope: medication which was not covered by the national insurance. Thus began the family’s terrifying monthly race, to acquire the $14,000 per month necessary to procure the life-prolonging medication. In a desperate appeal to the public, Eliyahu’s wife pleaded: “Our kids need their Abba back.” The ‘race,’ however, was not won. We are pained to report that on Monday of this week, July 2nd, Eliyahu lost his battle with cancer. 9

children sat shiva now in their Beit Shemesh home. The youngest is just one year old. A friend of the family recalls the bris of the youngest, which took place in a time when most knew that Eliyahu’s survival was unlikely: “There wasn’t a dry eye as Reb Eliyahu was Sandek of his newborn son,” he writes, “as everyone was thinking about the poor child, doomed to a life without a father, a life without anyone to walk him to Shul, a life with no one to learn with him at Avos Ubanim.” An emergency fund has been started on the widow’s behalf. Mrs. Klatzkin is now on her own with a large family, and deeply burdened by immense medical debt, as well as the other expenses which went unpaid during their period of financial strain. During his lifetime, Rabbi Klatzkin took pride in providing for his family. Now, donations are being saved to help his wife pick up the pieces.

The campaign’s goal is to allow the young mother to mourn her husband in peace, and to provide a stable future for herself and her children. Please mail your Tax deductible contributions to Vaad Harabonim: 221

Bridget Gentleman York and California were too big of a change and I was looking for alternatives with a smaller town feel.

How did you end up in Baltimore? I ended up in Baltimore via Israel actually. I was working on becoming more Orthodox but the “big city” places such as New

What previous jobs have you had? I have had quite a few jobs actually. My first, was working on a horse ranch, that was amazing!! I was a dog groomer, a wrangler at a boy scout camp, I installed sprinklers, installed wood floors, I was a server at a an Irish pub, and a sports bar. Plus, I have been fortunate enough

How did you get into the coffee business? I love the mornings and enjoy meeting people. I love being able to provide the early to rise customers with their coffee and a smile. Start their day off right. What makes Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf so unique? The mentality of CBTL and the products we sell are just fantastic. They really care about everyone within the company, from the ground up to the store management. We have a program called the caring cup which provides the “bean or leaf pickers” what they need; schools, housing, medical facilities for the families of the workers, which I think is just amazing! In the store, we have team members, not employees. It helps create a frame of mind where we really care about each other and it filters over to our customers. It’s been a incredible experience to truly open

a coffee shop from the ground up, very hard but very rewarding! We have been open one month and every day and every week we are making leaps and bounds of progress in getting our gears into place, so please have patience with us as we grow. We hope to really have everything running smoothly within short order. What’s your favorite drink? I would have to break my favorite drinks down by category because I don’t have just one! If I want a hot caffeinated drink, I would go for a vanilla flat white. For tea, I would have to say the Cherry Blossom Tea Latte - hot or cold! If I’m not in the mood for sugary tea, I go with the ginseng peppermint tea. It’s a great refresher at the end of a hot day! For Ice blended, I’m boring. I go for a pure (coffee free) cherry vanilla with whip cream! We have a drink for everyone here, caffeine or not! I look forward to seeing you here! Bridget Gentleman

Tell us about yourself? I am originally from Nebraska and I recently started an amazing job as the General Manager of The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf!

What do you love most about the Baltimore Jewish Community? I was told that Baltimore had a small town feel and a great community, not to mention an entire grocery store dedicated to Kosher food! I have lived here for a little over 6 years now and it really is true, I love the community. There is a wonderful blend of all sorts of people here! I’m very excited to have the opportunity to meet more people in the community through working here at CBTL.

after the “serious shooting incident against our forces.”

Soldier Killed on Gaza Border A day of violence ended last Shabbos with a fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The escalation started last Friday night when Staff Sgt. Aviv Levy, 20, was killed by sniper fire along the Gaza border. Israel proceeded to bomb several Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip in response. The IDF said that the sniper attack on Levy and his unit was the “most serious incident since the 2014 Gaza war.” An IDF spokesman said that in retaliation, “our aircraft are carrying out widespread attacks against terror targets belonging to Hamas in the Gaza Strip,” adding that this came

Over 60 targets were hit by Israeli warplanes, including three brigade headquarters. Also destroyed, according to an IDF statement, were “weapons and ammunition stores, training grounds, observation posts, control centers and the offices of the brigade commander.” Factories and machinery for the manufacture of weapons, a drone storage facility, an entry shaft to tunnels and “elements for constructing underground infrastructure” were also hit. After the airstrikes, two rockets

were intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system and one more fell in an open field. An Israeli official announced on Saturday afternoon that Hamas asked for a truce through Egyptian mediators after the IDF airstrikes. Hamas offered to stop “the fire terror” and “terror at the fence,” referring to launches of flaming kites and balloons launched toward Israel, and the attacks and infiltration attempts at the border. “Egyptian and international efforts have led to a return to the previous state of calm between the Occupation [reference to Israel] and the Palestinian factions,” Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum new outlets. A ceasefire had been struck a week earlier after Hamas sent over 200 rockets and mortars into Israel and the IDF responded with dozens of anti-Hamas strikes. Levy’s death marks the first time in four years that an Israeli soldier has been killed along the Gaza border. Hundreds attended his funeral, which took place on Sunday.

Noam Levi, Aviv’s uncle, told Haaretz, “Aviv was the eldest grandchild in the family. The whole family admired him. He did things thoroughly and quietly, he achieved a lot in his short life. He very much wanted to serve in Givati. He was introverted and shy, but he was serious and conscientious.” Levy did not have to go to the fence, but asked to do so, wanting to help his fellow soldiers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “Together with his comrades, Aviv fought with determination and heroism against terror from the Gaza Strip. To our sorrow, this struggle sometimes claims a price that is heavy for us to bear. Our hearts are with the family.”

into Israeli airspace on Tuesday afternoon, the IDF acted immediately and downed the jet. The Sukhoi-model jet advanced two kilometers into Israeli space. Two Patriot missiles shot the plane down. The jet crashed in Syria and its pilot was killed. After the downing, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Israel’s actions, warning that the country would continue to take similar steps against any incursion into its territory.

Protect the home you love. “Our air defense systems identified a Syrian air force plane taking off from the Syrian T-4 airbase and penetrating into Israeli airspace,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “This was a blatant violation of the 1974 separation agreement between us and the Syrians. We will not accept any such penetration of, or spillover into, our territory, neither on the ground nor in the air.” According to the IDF, the fighter jet took off from the Iran-linked T-4 air force base in central Syria, which Israel has bombed in the past, and traveled “at high speed” toward the Golan Heights. “Our forces acted appropriately,” Netanyahu said in a tweet. “We insist that the Syrians strictly abide by the Separation of Forces Agreement between us and them.” The IDF said it had noticed increased air force activity in southwestern Syria, near the border, since the morning. Syria and Russia have been waging a large air campaign to oust the last remaining pockets of rebels from the border region. Syria claimed the jet had been in Syrian airspace when it was shot down. Speaking at the UN Security Council meeting discussing the Middle East, Israel’s ambassador to the UN Danny Danon warned that Israel would take similar action on any bor-

der. “Israel will not tolerate any violation of our sovereignty – not from Syria, not from Gaza, not from any other enemy that threatens our security,” he said. The 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement requires Syria to abide by a demilitarized zone between the two countries. The agreement was drawn up in the wake of the 1973 Yom Kippur War established a demilitarized zone between Israel and Syria. Construction Minister Yoav Galant (Kulanu), a former IDF commander of the Southern Command, said shooting down the jet sent a message to Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah. “Violating Israel’s airspace crosses the red line,” he said.

“This is our Nation, Language and Flag”

The Knesset passed the Jewish State Law last week which officially enshrines Israel as “the national home of the Jewish people.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the law’s passing “a pivotal moment in the annals of Zionism and the State of Israel.” The law was passed with 62 Member of the Knesset voting in favor, 55 opposed, and two abstaining. There were many hours of heated debate leading up to the vote. “We enshrined in law the basic principle of our existence,” said Netanyahu. “Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people, which respects the individual rights of all its citizens. This is our state – the Jewish state. In recent years there have been some who have attempted to put this in doubt, to undercut the core of our being. Today we made it law: this is our nation, language, and flag.” Former Shin Bet director Avi

Dichter was the main proponent of the law over the past few years. He hailed it as a response to anyone who believed that the Jewish presence in Israel is temporary. “Contrary to the disinformation and fake news that have flooded [the conversation], the Basic Law does not hurt Israel’s minority cultures,” Dichter said. He also claimed it does not detract from the status of the Arabic language. He is referring to a clause in the law that downgrades Arabic from an official language to one of “special standing.” Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein hailed the law as “history making,” and said that the new legislation is “one of the most important laws ever to be passed by the Knesset.” The law also declares that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, sets the Hebrew calendar as the official calendar of the state, and recognizes Independence Day, days of remembrance and Jewish holidays.

and bring in their terror cell. Belgian nationals, a married couple identified as Amir S. and Nasmeh N., were also arrested in the raid. The husband and wife, who were described as being “of Iranian origin,” were carrying 500 grams of the volatile explosive TATP, along with a detonation device, when an elite police squad stopped them in a residential district of Brussels. Five raids were successfully carried out across Belgium by French, Belgian, German, and Israeli forces to thwart the attack.

A terror plot in France was foiled by Israel’s Mossad spy agency last month. Crucial intelligence was supplied to authorities in Belgium, Germany, and France that led to the capture of a terror cell that was run by an Iranian diplomat. An Iranian out of the embassy in Austria was planning to bomb a conference center that was to hold a meeting for an Iranian dissident group on June 30. The People’s Mujahedin of Iran held a rally that day in the Paris suburb of Villepinte which was attended by over 25,000 people. The Mossad teamed up with their counterparts in several countries to track suspects, eavesdrop on them

Four-hundred-twenty-two Syrians were accepted temporarily into Israel during their long journey to Canada, the U.K., and Germany in order to escape the Assad regime. The head of the Israeli military project to help the so-called “White Helmet” emigrants said that the eyes of the refugees “twinkled from happiness” when they were finally able to cross the border into Israel and escape the dictator’s brutal suppression of his people. “There’s no doubt that it was an emotional position to be in yesterday, to stand on the border fence and accept the families, mostly women and children,” said the Lt. Col. “The families crossed [the fence], at first apprehensively, but once they reached the border, their eyes twinkled from happiness with the knowledge that they’d gotten their lives back. I am happy to be an officer in an army and in a country that is carrying out this mission and expressing the values of humaneness and compassion.

The Week In News “This is the nature of our work and this is a significant moment like no other,” he added. The refugees passed through Jordan on their way to Israel. Both Jordan and Israel have a standing policy not to accept any more refugees from Syria. The decision to facilitate the transfer, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was made after receiving requests from President Donald Trump and other world leaders. “Several days ago, President Trump contacted me, as did Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, and

others, and requested that we assist in evacuating hundreds of ‘White Helmets’ from Syria,” Netanyahu said in a statement from his office. “I approved their passage through Israel to additional countries, as an important humanitarian gesture,” the prime minister added. Israel has been engaged in a massive humanitarian aid campaign helping Syrians on the border from starvation and sickness. More than 5,000 people have been treated by the Jewish state in field hospitals at the Syrian border and hundreds of tons of

food, medical equipment and clothing have been sent across the border to Syria. Since 2016, over 600 Syrian children and their mothers have come to Israel for treatment. This is the first time that a mass transfer of refugees has made their way across the border to be relocated around the globe. Syrian Civil Defense, the official name of the White Helmets, is a volunteer organization that has worked in rebel areas of Syria providing medical support during the seven-yearlong Syrian civil war.

Kotel Boulder Falls A very large stone dislodged from the Kotel and fell onto the “egalitarian” mixed prayer area on Monday. The 100-kilo boulder fell right next to a woman who was praying. “I didn’t hear or feel anything until it landed right at my feet,” said Daniella Goldberg, 79. She said she was praying at the site, as she does regularly, when suddenly the boulder crashed down. She told Hadashot TV news she “tried not to let the incident distract me from my prayers” and refused to be drawn on whether divine providence had spared her. “May we all be blessed,” she said.

Mayor Nir Barkat, City Engineer Shlomo Eshkol, and members of the Department of Dangerous Buildings came to evaluate the scene and consult on what path to take to avoid any further damage. A Dangerous Buildings Order was issued by the City Engineer and the area was fenced off. Signs were placed to prevent anyone from entering until the Antiquities Authority determines the area is safe. Over the next week, the Antiquities Authority will conduct a mapping of the stones in order to preserve them and ensure no more stones are loose. “A great miracle happened this morning when the stone, weighing about 100 kilos, fell close to a woman praying in the Ezrat Yisrael and she wasn’t hurt,” Barkat said. “I intend to ask the Prime Minister’s Office in charge of the site to extend the periodic inspections carried out by the Israel Antiquities Authority at the Western Wall to the Ezrat Yisrael and throughout the Western Wall, as well as to the southern wall, to prevent disintegration and ensure the wall can be approached without risk.” The rabbi of the main Western

The Week In News Wall plaza called for public “soul searching” after the incident. “This is an unusual and most rare incident that has not occurred for decades,” said Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch. “The fact that this powerful incident happened a day after the 9th of Av fast, in which we mourned the destruction of our temples, raises doubts and questions which the human soul is too small to contain, and requires soul-searching. “I thank the Creator that a heavy disaster was averted,” he added.

A College Grad – at 11

William Maillis is barely old enough to babysit, but he has already graduated college. On Saturday, William, 11, walked

across a stage to receive his Associate in Arts degree from St. Petersburg College in Florida. “I am totally fascinated by William and the work that he has done,” Dr. Tonjua Williams, President of St. Petersburg College, said. “He’s extremely brilliant, very open and collaborative.” William started college in 2016 after graduating high school at age of 9. His parents say he was always on the “fast track.” By the age of 2 he was doing simple math and by 4 he learned algebra. “Everybody has gifts from G-d. I was gifted with knowledge and science and history,” William said. So what’s next? He plans to continue his education and will begin classes next month at the University of South Florida. “I want to be an astrophysicist,” William related. “I want to prove to the world that G-d does exist through science.” His goal is to complete his doctorate by the time he’s 18. That’s about the time he’ll be allowed to vote.

The Week In News Mayor of the Meow-ment

Sweet Tart is now the mayor of the Village of Omena in Michigan. She’s probably the most paw-fect mayor the town has ever had. Sweet Tart was voted into office in an unusual election, with $1 donations to the local historical society serving as votes. The 9-year-old feline previously served as the village’s vice mayor, so she has experience doing the job.

“While I’m home schooled, I graduated first in my class!” Sweet Tart’s campaign profile boasted. Officials said there were a record number of votes – around 7,000 – in the election, which featured a variety of animal candidates. The village has had an animal mayor for more than a decade. Sweet Tart will serve as mayor until the next election in 2021. Sweet Tart’s opponents in the race, which included 13 dogs, a peacock, a goat, a chicken and another cat, were all awarded positions on the village council. Sounds like they got the pick of the litter.

Dog Daughter Dogs live well in Britain. Take Lucky Princess Cleopatra Superchill. Aside from the over-the-top name, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has 65 out-

fits and 175 pairs of sunglasses. And that’s not all. She even has a custom $1,970 carriage, just so her claws won’t get dirty. Cleopatra – can we call her Cleo for short? – just celebrated her seventh birthday. Her owner, Anthony Welsh, spent $1,313 on lavish gifts for the dog he says is his “daughter.” What do you buy the pooch who has everything? This year, Cleo received the finest tennis balls, a special feeding station and her very own custom-made mountain bike. Oh, and we forgot the party itself. She had a beach party at a dog-friendly café where her bulldog friend, Frank, and his owner joined them for doggy birthday cake, doggy steak, and wrapped presents. Woof. Welsh loves Cleo dearly. “Cleo is just amazing, she really is one in a million. People may think I spoil her but she’s like a daughter to me and if I have the means why not give her everything?” the 57-year-old said.

Welsh is a personal trainer and so he makes sure Cleo is exercised daily – on foot and on her mountain bike – and buys her the best dog food, which runs around $52 a bag.

For the times she’s not running around, Cleo has three kids’ sports cars, a 4x4, a convertible white sports car and a racing car, all at $656 each. She drives around in the vehicles with her manicured nails and tiaras. She also enjoys daily massages and has songs sung to her by bedtime. “She makes me smile every single day. I feel love from Cleo every single day of the week,” Welsh says. “She’s unbelievable. She’s a legend.” Cue the pup-arazzi.

Where’s Feivish?

THE BALTIMORE JEWISH HOME

By Rabbi Zvi Teichman

One of the most oft quoted verses is the one that directs us to preserve and protect our health and physical wellbeing. )‫ונשמרתם מאד לנפשתכם (דברים ד טו‬, Watch yourselves very carefully... The Talmud in two places clearly understands this verse as a mandate to maintain our physical welfare. ‫(ברכות‬ ).‫ שבועות לו‬:‫לב‬

B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M

The understanding of this phrase in this way is totally disjointed from the context of the complete verse. ‫ונשמרתם מאד לנפשתיכם כי לא ראיתם‬ ‫כל־תמונה ביום דבר ד' אליכם בחרב מתוך‬ ‫האש‬, Watch yourselves very carefully, since you did not see any image on the day that G-d spoke to you out of fire at Chorev. The Torah in this verse describes the revelation at Mount Sinai when G-d appeared to His nation absent of any visible or tangible form. It goes on to forewarn from any attempt to attribute any physical characteristics to G-d. G-d is totally unaffected by material conditions or the laws of nature and physics. Limiting G-d to finite dimensions is the essence of idolatry. If we are to understand the beginning of the verse as an injunction to take care of our physical selves then the rest of the verse makes no sense whatsoever. We should tend to our material good because G-d did not appear in any image on the day He spoke?!

The Holy Seer of Lublin reveals a most profound understanding of this verse.)‫(דברי אמת ואתחנן‬ Man is often frustrated by the confinement of his soul in a container that stifles its growth. The many temptations that stem from our being physical creatures distract us from fulfilling that which lies instinctively within us, the will to draw closer to G-d. If a person had a choice he would discard those thick layers of earthliness and allow its spirit to soar. Perhaps we are to beat that external barrier to submission, and not allow it to pine for its health. The Holy Seer teaches us otherwise. G-d by His appearing as Himself without any watering down of His essence sought to instruct us by example. Just as He presented Himself without diminishing His stature by placing it in a fathomable physical vessel that might have made it easier for us to comprehend Him, in the same vain we are to accept and even preserve the limitations of the material container our souls are housed in. Our greatness lies in the striving to find G-d despite the barriers that separate us. This is not merely a command to attend to our material welfare; it is the very statement of our mission here on this earth. G-d is telling us: make sure you flourish physically because you have a mission to fulfill here on this terra firma. By taking care of our

health we assure we will fulfill the goals G-d has laid out for us upon this earth. Don’t be stifled by the reality of our earthly urges and distractions, be empowered to infuse and elevate them through the power of the eternal soul that resides within it. Each one of us has a different set of circumstances we were born in, raised in and exposed to. Often those realities put us at greater disadvantage and distance from the soul that beats within. No matter how far and out of touch we may be, nevertheless, the encounter at Mount Sinai that was unique to our people exclusively, where we encountered the Divine Presence itself, branded each one of us with an eternal yearning to discover that moment when we will summoned to respond to our unique calling, when we will break out of the walls that confine us. There is a famous Chassidic tale regarding one Feivish the Lowlife. Reb Yaakov Yosef HaKohen of Polonne, one of the earliest disciples of the Holy Baal Shem Tov, in his work Toldos Yaakov Yosef, discusses how not only did the Jewish people make a wise choice in selecting G-d, but G-d too chose well. He goes on to quote in the name of a woman in Mezhibuz who brought as proof to this ‘wise’ choice of G-d from the fact that even “Feivish the Lowlife sanctified the name of the Almighty by sacrificing his life...

In one version of this legend it tells of a certain Feivish who was much distanced from a life of Torah and mitzvos to say the least. He was a very loyal servant of a particularly evil and notorious Poritz, Landowner. The Poritz boasted of the Jew who would do his every bidding. His cohorts questioned his claim and challenged him to see how loyal the Jew is by telling him he must convert to Christianity or be thrown into a pyre. The Poritz took up the gauntlet prepared a mighty fire and told the Jew to display his allegiance by converting. Feivish sprang into the flames as he shouted Shma Yisrael.‫(שפע חיים מהרבי‬ )‫מקלויזנברג זצוק"ל לך לך‬ The Jewish nation has rediscovered anew the soul that resonates and penetrates through the most thickened barriers. In unprecedented unity the collective soul of our nation is calling to the Almighty to reveal Himself again. We have not forgotten. We have not faltered. Each one of us must appreciate the challenge and the thrill that awaits us all when we each break through our personal barriers. We must not get discouraged. We must not view ourselves as failures. G-d is happy with His choice. Even Feivish the Lowlife is His beloved and cherished child. May we discover the Feivish within us and cling lovingly to the Father that never gives up on us.

he text of the review of the Ten Commandments that appears in this week’s Torah reading differs slightly from the text that appeared previously in the book of Shemot. As you can well understand, there has been much commentary and explanation over the centuries of Jewish scholarship regarding these differences in words, even though the basic ideas of the Commandments remain constant in both versions of the text. The Talmud assigns some of the differences in the text to the G-dly revelation at Sinai where miraculously the L-rd, so to speak, uttered two words in a simultaneous fashion, something that is beyond human ability and comprehension. Other differences in the text are explained through halachic and aggadic interpretation. Over the centuries many of the great commentators of Israel have added their insights and interpretations of these texts and their eternal meanings and messages. It has been suggested that to convey these sometimes hidden and misunderstood nuances, Moshe in his review of the

events of his 40 years as the leader of Israel in the desert of Sinai purposely restates, albeit with minor differences, the text of the basic principles of human and Jewish civilization. There is fascinating discussion

a never-ending source of inspiration, fascination, wonder and questions. The ability for human society to exist and prosper is always in doubt, through the centuries of violence and war, exploitation and cruelty and in

All the preaching that goes on in the world about higher values and human freedoms are of little benefit without the commitment to the observance of the Ten Commandments.

over the centuries as to what the text that was inscribed on the tablets of stone actually stated. There is also discussion as to what type of Hebrew font was used – that of ancient Hebrew called ktav Ivri or the font that we are all familiar with from our scrolls of the Torah, ktav Ashuei. The Torah has always proved itself to be

the norms of so-called civilized society. All of this is rooted in the unfortunate tendency of human beings to disregard the tenets and spirit of the Ten Commandments. Respect for human life and for the property of others, a system of fair justice and law enforcement, respect for elders and, above all, the

appreciation of the universal G-d that creates and guides all of us are the bedrock principles of Judaism as reflected in the Ten Commandments. The abhorrence of immorality and of falseness and untruths shine forth from the eternal words of the commandments. Without these principles being followed and appreciated humankind is always only a step away from being essentially an extension of the animal kingdom. All the preaching that goes on in the world about higher values and human freedoms are of little benefit without a commitment to the observance of the Ten Commandments. There are all sorts of moral ideals and organizations that flood our modern world. But, without the existence of the realization of G-d in our personal and national lives, these moralities will always be inadequate and insufficient to prevent the descent into barbarism and destruction. We should pay close attention to the text of the Ten Commandments that we will hear read from the Torah this Shabbat. Shabbat shalom.

We Want Moshiach But Now? By Eytan Kobre

It is easier to take the Jew out of exile than to take the exile out of the Jew. -R’ Yaakov Shimshon of Shepetovka

B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M

R

’ Nochum of Chernobyl once stayed at the home of an elderly couple in a remote village. In the middle of the night, R’ Nochum awoke and recited Tikkun Chatzos – lamenting the destruction of the Bais HaMikdash and praying for it to be rebuilt – in tears and with cries of anguish. His host, woken by the wailing, asked R’ Nochum why he was crying and carrying on. R’ Nochum explained that he was praying for the Final Redemption and beseeching G-d for the arrival of Moshiach. R’ Nochum was met with a blank expression. “Don’t you also desire the Final Redemption and the arrival of Moshiach?” he asked his host. “I’m not sure,” the host answered. “Let me ask my wife.” A short while later, the host returned. “Moshiach’s arrival means we will have to pick up and move to the Land of Israel. That means we will have to give up our farm and our cows, horses, and chickens. We aren’t really

interested in all that.” “Okay,” R’ Nochum prodded, “but don’t your gentile neighbors, every now and then, trash your farm and steal your cows, horses, and chickens? Wouldn’t it be better to go the Land of Israel with Moshiach?” The host quickly consulted his wife and returned. “We understand your point, Rebbe, but we have a better idea. Moshiach can take our gentile neighbors to the Land of Israel. We will stay here with the farm, horses, cows, and chickens.” Many of us are not much different. Rather than eagerly anticipating and dreaming of Moshiach’s arrival, we obsess over things like our Nine Days menus. Other than certain segments of our community, the very concept of Moshiach is forgotten – or worse, has become taboo. But, as R’ Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev would say, on Shabbos Chazon, every Jew is shown a vision of the Third Bais HaMikdash, which is meant to inspire our yearning. Not only is belief in the Final Redemption and the coming of Moshiach a central tenet of our faith, so is yearning for them (Rambam, Sanhedrin 11:1 [Thirteen Principles of Faith, No. 12]; see Chabakuk 2:3; Tzephania 3:8; Yeshaya 30:18). Belief in Moshiach (and in G-d Himself) and eagerly anticipating

his arrival are intertwined with one another (SeMaK, Positive Commandment No. 1). In fact, “those who do not believe in [Moshiach] or who do not anticipate his arrival, deny not only the other prophets but the Torah and Moshe Rabbeinu” (Rambam, Melachim 11:1; Ohr Yechezkel, Emunas HaGeula; Shibolei HaLeket, Seder Taanis, Chapter 274). In the World to Come, one of the first questions to be asked is whether we hoped for the redemption (Shabbos 31a). One who firmly and truly believes in Moshiach surely would anticipate his arrival eagerly (Borchi Nafshi, Vol. 1, pg. 292). But anticipating the Final Redemption is not simply an aspirational exercise; it informs our present-day actions. “One who says, ‘I shall be a Nazir on the day the Son of Dovid [i.e., Moshiach] comes’ can never drink wine, because we must always be hopeful that he will come each day” (Eruvin 43a). One may not blemish his entire herd of animals before tithing it, because the Bais HaMikdash may be rebuilt at any time and then there won’t be any animals to offer as a sacrifice (Bechoros 53b). And, even nowadays, Kohanim must take care in drinking wine, lest they become intoxicated and unable to serve in the Bais HaMikdash, which may be rebuilt any moment (Taanis 17b). A follower of the Tzemach Tzedek

rented an inn from the local poritz, renewing his lease each year. One year, he sent his son to sign the lease renewal, but, rather than signing a one year lease, the son committed to a three-year term. Upon learning of the new terms, the father was upset. “We believe with perfect faith in the coming of Moshiach, and he will definitely come this year. You paid for an additional two years for no reason.” Even the nadir of the year, Tisha B’Av, bespeaks this yearning. Moshiach is born on Tisha B’Av (Yerushalmi, Berachos 2:4; Eicha Rabba 1:51). The tone of Eicha shifts from completely morose to include a ray of hopefulness and yearning (Eicha, Chapter 5). The same could be said for kinnos. And there is an age-old custom for women to wash their heads and clean their homes after Mincha on Tisha B’Av, as a sign of hope and yearning for the Final Redemption (Birkei Yosef, No. 559; Kol Bo, No. 62; Meiri, Taanis 30a; but see Bais Yosef, Orach Chaim 554). Just before the onset of Tisha B’Av one year, R’ Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev stood before his window for what seemed like an eternity. It was getting dark. The whole town waited to begin Eicha and kinnos. Where was R’ Levi Yitzchak? At long last, the beadle knocked on his door. “Rebbe, the entire congregation is waiting for you.”

39 G-d’s redemption – “every day, constantly” (Tana d’Bei Eliyahu 19). So three times a day we pray, “We hope for Your deliverance” (Shemoneh Esrei), and each morning we express our belief that “at the End of Days, He will send our Moshiach, to redeem those longing for His final salvation” (Yigdal).

Moshiach. R’ Yaakov Neiman once visited the Chofetz Chaim, who asked, “Nu, what are people in the streets saying about Moshiach?” R’ Yaakov remained silent. The Chofetz Chaim nodded his head in knowing disappointment. “That’s the problem. We say, ‘I will

“How could we be awaiting him if we aren’t even talking about him?”

await him each day.’ But people aren’t even talking about Moshiach. How could we be awaiting him if we aren’t even talking about him?” At the time of the destruction of the Bais HaMikdash and the exile of the Jewish people, G-d assured Yitzchak

But is all that just lip service? It’s easy to say we want Moshiach (Kuzari, 2-24; Borchi Nafshi, Vol. 1, pg. 31); G-d wants us to yearn for Moshiach (Pele Yoetz, Tzipui; Taam V’Daas, Shemos 10:21). The sad irony is that, nowadays, many of us don’t even say we want

Avinu that there would come a generation that would anticipate the redemption eagerly – and that generation would bring the Final Redemption (Yalkut Shimoni, Eicha 997). Perhaps that explains what we say three times a day: “The offspring of Your servant, Dovid, may You speedily cause to flourish...for we hope for Your salvation all day long” (Shemoneh Esrei). Unlike nearly everything else in life, we would merit the Final Redemption if only we would “hope for it all day long.” “More than we want Moshiach to come,” the Chofetz Chaim reassured, “Moshiach himself wants to come. But he will not come until we hope for and anticipate his arrival…” (Tzipisa Liyeshua, Chapter 3). May that day be imminent.

THE BALTIMORE JEWISH HOME

“Indeed,” R’ Levi Yitzchak sighed, “Moshiach still has not arrived. We will have to say kinnos this year too.” R’ Dovid Moshe of Chortkov related how his grandfather, R’ Avraham, the son of the Maggid of Mezritch, would observe Tisha B’Av in hopeful arrival of Moshiach. On Tisha B’Av, my grandfather would sit with his head bowed between his knees, his eyes streaming tears. And from time to time throughout the day, he would raise his head, and, in deep yearning for Moshiach, would glance around and ask: “Not here yet? Hasn’t he arrived yet?” R’ Mordechai of Lechovich would say, “If we truly believed each day that Moshiach will come today, we would not save our kinnos booklets from year to year.” In fact, R’ Avraham of Chechanov would buy a new kinnos every year because, after each Tisha B’Av, he would place his kinnos in shaimos, confident that Moshiach would come that year. Contemporary Loshon Hora Issues

Hilchos Loshon Hora – Relating Loshon Hora to One’s Spouse By Rabbi Dovid Jaffee

This article is adapted from my upcoming sefer on the laws of Loshon Hora in contemporary times. All halachos mentioned herein are complex and part of a larger framework. The purpose of the article is to raise awareness of these essential halachos. Hence, one should not draw any practical conclusions without first consulting a rav. Speaking to One’s Spouse There is a circumstance in which the prohibition of speaking Loshon Hora is commonly transgressed. When one comes home from a hard day’s work, it is common to talk to his spouse about how the day went. Indeed, this is a commendable practice, and it is important for shalom bayis (marital harmony). However, it is not permissible to tell Loshon Hora to one’s spouse. Therefore, even if an individual feels very close to his spouse and shares everything, he may not relate anything negative about another person. Furthermore, Chazal teach that one who regularly relates Loshon Hora to his wife will ultimately bring troubles upon himself. Furthermore, he will eventually lose her respect and negatively impact his marriage. Important Note: Regarding a need to share something with one’s spouse in order to receive advice for dealing with the situation at hand, or out of a genuine need to let off steam, a dispensation does exist. This will be the subject of a future article. Rav Pam’s Silence A story is told about Rav Avrohom Pam’s careful adherence to this halacha. There was a period in time when

Rav Pam was concerned about a controversy involving some people with whom he was very close. On a daily basis, he was kept abreast of the situation. Once, Rebbetzin Pam was seated at a Simcha, and a woman at the table brought up the controversy. Rebbetzin Pam was the only one at the table who had no idea what she was talking about! Apparently, Rav Pam had been careful to refrain from letting his wife know anything about the situation. The Birth of Rav Elyashiv Rav Avrohom Elyashiv and his wife, Chaya Musha, were pious Jews who lived in Shavel, Lithuania. They had been married for many years, but remained childless. One day, Chaya Musha was hanging out her laundry to dry. She had a cantankerous neighbor who walked by, spitefully pulled down the laundry, and threw it in the mud. This required Chaya Musha to laboriously hand-wash all of the laundry again. Chaya Musha herself had witnessed what happened, but she restrained herself and said nothing. A short time later, the neighbor’s son became deathly ill. The neighbor was distraught, and she went to her rabbi, known as Reb Shlomo, to ask what to do to save her son. Reb Shlomo told the neighbor that Hashem has a reason for everything that He does. He asked her if she had done anything wrong recently, for which she was being punished. The lady recalled the incident with Chaya Musha’s laundry. Reb Shlomo said that she must go to the lady who she had harmed and ask her for forgiveness. So, the neighbor went to the Elyashiv home. and knocked on the door. Reb Avrohom opened the door, and told her that his

wife was not home. The neighbor insisted that she speak to Chaya Musha, in order to ask for her forgiveness. Reb Avrohom said that if she had done anything so terrible to his wife, he certainly would have heard about it. He concluded that, as he had not heard of anything, the neighbor must have confused another lady for his wife. In truth, he argued, she had not done anything to his wife at all. The neighbor went back to Reb Shlomo and asked him what to do. She said that she knew it was Chaya Musha that she had harmed. She even knew that Chaya Musha had seen what happened. However, Reb Avrohom had insisted that it must have happened to someone else. Reb Shlomo responded that Chaya Musha was a saintly woman, and presumably she did not say anything to the neighbor so that she would not be embarrassed. Similarly, she must have not even related the incident to her husband, so that he would not know that the neighbor had dirtied their laundry and lose respect for her. Soon afterwards, Chaya Musha become pregnant and gave birth to her only child, Yosef Shalom. Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv grew up to become one of the greatest Torah giants of his generation. It is said that Chaya Musha merited the birth of her extraordinary son as a reward for her restraint from embarrassing or speaking negatively about her neighbor. Although few of us are at the level of Chaya Musha, this story can serve as inspiration for us to be meticulous regarding what we relate to our spouses. The Impact on Children

The Chofetz Chaim writes that, in his opinion, a primary cause for the prevalence of Loshon Hora is the lack of chinuch (training one’s children) regarding the prohibition and its severity. It is often challenging for a ba’al teshuva to start keeping, for instance, the laws of Shabbos or Kashrus. However, for those who were raised keeping these laws, they are second nature. If children would be trained from a young age to be as careful about what comes out of their mouths as they are about what goes in, they would find it easier to adhere to these halachos as adults. Rav Nissim Karelitz related a story that he had heard from his mother: As a young child, she once overheard someone speak negatively about her father, the rabbi of the town. She subsequently told her father what she had heard. Her father shouted, “Rechilus!” (rebuking her for telling him something that would cause him to become upset at the one who spoke against him). Rav Karelitz’s mother said that this made a lasting impression on her, regarding the obligation to distance oneself from forbidden speech. The best form of chinuch is by example. When the parents adhere to the laws of Loshon Hora, the children will pick up on it. Conversely, if parents are not careful themselves, even teaching the laws of Loshon Hora to their children will be ineffective. This contradictory behavior will only plant seeds of confusion and rebellion, and is counterproductive. *Interested readers can e-mail dovidjaffee@gmail.com to receive the sources for the rulings.

That promise was quickly broken. Shortly after the November 29, 1947 United Nations vote to partition Palestine, the Israeli provisional government beseeched Marcus to help them identify and hire senior military officers. He contacted many high-ranking retired officers, but everyone refused to assist, fearing that, without government permission, they may lose their army status and U.S. citizenship. Mickey, however, had no such qualms: as the chief of the War Crimes Division, he witnessed firsthand the piles of Jewish corpses in Dachau and other death camps, and understood how urgently a Jewish homeland was needed. The U.S. War Department granted Marcus permission to accept the assignment, provided he not use his own name or rank. Arriving in Tel Aviv in January 1948 under the pseudonym Michael Stone, Mickey embraced the herculean task of molding a tiny, poorly-armed military into a powerful force capable of withstanding an allout onslaught from six well-equipped invading Arab armies. Mickey loved the Israeli solders’ intelligence, ability to improvise, and self-sacrificing spirit – as he probably saw a lot of himself in these young fighters. Notwithstanding his limited Hebrew vocabulary, Marcus immediately ingratiated himself to everyone and gained their confidence and loy-

alty. Marcus helped create organizational structure with a streamlined chain of command, emphasizing teamwork between the groups that had, until now, been separate combat organizations. His biggest contribution, though, was to persuade the army to attack the enemy rather than adopt a defensive strategy. On May 14, 1948, the day he declared the establishment of the State of Israel, Ben Gurion wrote in his diary, “...the whole world was sure that within ten days .... not a soul would be alive in Israel.” However, when the Arab armies attacked, Israel was ready, thanks in great part to Marcus’ planning. In the Negev, his hit-and-run tactics, together with equal doses of guile and guts, kept the Egyptian army and air force off balance and paved the way for a miraculous victory. On May 28th, Ben Gurion honored Marcus with the rank of Aluf, equivalent to Lieutenant General. He was the first general in Jewish history since Judah Maccabee two thousand years earlier. The next order of business was rescuing Jerusalem. When the Jewish section of Jerusalem was about to fall and the only supply route to Jerusalem became impassable, Marcus devised an ingenious plan to build a bypass road on a mountain trail. The

Burma Road transported additional men, equipment and food, which broke the Arab siege just days before the United Nations negotiated a ceasefire. Tragically, Mickey was killed in the early hours of June 11th, just six hours before the ceasefire went into effect. Restless and unable to sleep, Mickey, wrapped in his bed sheet, walked beyond the guarded perimeter. Mistaking the white-robed figure as the enemy, a Jewish soldier fatally shot Marcus. Prime Minister Ben Gurion summed up Marcus’ influence in a telegram informing Israel’s NY delegation of his demise: “… as a man and a commander he endeared himself to all those who came into personal contact with him and his fame spread through all the ranks of our armed forces stop they all admired his superb courage his remarkable military intuition … his unlimited devotion and his natural spontaneous human fellowship stop… his name will live forever in the annals of the Jewish people … “

n belated tribute to the Fourth of July, let’s examine the life of Mickey Marcus, a proud Jewish U.S. hero who became a leader of Israel’s armed forces during the 1948 War of Independence. Marcus made such a huge impact during his brief tenure in Israel that streets in several cities, the Tel Aviv neighborhood of Neve David and Kibbutz Mishmar David were named for him. David – nicknamed Mickey – Marcus was born in 1901. Growing up in New York City, Mickey learned to box at a young age to protect himself from the neighborhood thugs. That moxie became Marcus’ hallmark and fueled him throughout his remarkable life. Mickey attended West Point Military Academy and was a strong student athlete, where he won the Intercollegiate Welterweight title. After completing active service, Marcus studied law and, as a government lawyer, crusaded against the mafia and put famous underworld leaders behind bars. Marcus quickly moved up the ladder and became New York City’s Commissioner of Corrections. During and after World War II, Marcus held numerous prominent positions in the U.S. Armed Forces. After an illustrious thirteen-year army career in which he rose to the rank of colonel, Mickey pledged to his wife that he would finally settle down.

TJH You gotta be kidding A 90-year-old couple was having problems remembering things, so they decided to go to their doctor to get checked out to make sure nothing was wrong with them. When they arrived at the doctor, they explained to the doctor about the problems they were having with their memory. After checking the couple out, the doctor told them that they were physically okay but might want to start writing things down to help them remember things. The couple thanked the doctor and left. Later that night while watching TV, the man got up from his chair and his wife asked, “Where are you going?” He replied, “To the kitchen.” She asked, “Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?” He replied, “Sure.” She then asked him, “Don’t you think you should write it down so you can remember it?” He said, “No, I can remember that.” She then said, “Well, I would also like some strawberries on top. You had better write that down because I know you’ll forget that.”

Ice Cream Facts In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month. (I’ve always seen eye to eye with Reagan.) Ice cream might be loaded with calories, but it is also a source of phosphorous, potassium and vitamins A and B. (Try this: “Mom, I really feel like I could use some phosphorous.”) In Canada, more ice cream is sold in winter than in summer. (Now I know why every winter I feel Canadian.) The U.S. ice cream industry generated total revenues of more than $10 billion in 2017. (I definitely spent $1 million on ice cream myself in 2018 so far.) It takes approximately 50 licks to finish off a scoop of ice cream. (Takes me about three bites…yes, I’m an “ice cream biter!”) The major ingredient in ice cream is air. (How fattening can it be?)

She replied, “Well, I also would like whipped cream on top. I know you will forget that so you better write it down.”

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest ice cream pyramid was made in August of 2002. The pyramid had 3,894 scoops, totaled 22 layers and weighed 1,005 pounds. The pyramid was 53 inches high. (The truth is, I wasn’t trying to set any records, I was just hungry.)

With irritation in his voice, he said, “I don’t need to write that down! I can remember that.” He then stomped off into the kitchen.

The United States is the top ice cream consuming country in the world. (Oh really? I thought it was Kyrgyzstan.)

He said, “I can remember that—you want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.”

After about 20 minutes, he returned from the kitchen and handed her a plate of hash browns and eggs. She stared at the plate for a moment and said angrily: “You see—I told you to write it down! You forgot my toast!”

The largest ice cream cake weighed in at 12,096 pounds. (It was very thoughtful of my friends to make such a nice birthday cake for me.) The widespread use of ice cream cones occurred after its introduction at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904 and many credit this as the birth of the ice cream cone. (The city that has the dumbest attraction in the world – the Arch – brought us the greatest attraction – the ice cream cone!) Vanilla is the #1 selling flavor. (That is so vanilla!)

Dating Dialogue

What Would You Do If… Moderated by Jennifer Mann, LCSW of The Navidaters

Dear Navidaters,

B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M

I’ve gone out with Debbie several times already. Things are looking good and we’re both in line with one another in just about all areas. But there is one sticking point that I’m afraid might be major. I’m actually wondering whether I’m being unrealistic, though I find I’m having a hard time changing my attitude, as is Debbie.

I’m studying to be an accountant and hope to work hard and do well. But I’m aware of the fact that these days it takes two working parents to support a family. This is a message that has been driven home to me by my parents as far back as I can remember. My mother has always worked as a teacher, despite the fact that my father has a good job. It makes the difference between worrying whether there is any money for extras and feeling a bit more comfortable and secure. Debbie comes from a home where she never saw her mother work and she has no intentions of ever working. She wants to be a stay-at-home mother and take care of her family. I respect her intentions, but worry that it will eventually cause problems. With all the wonderful chemistry and mutual attitudes that we have, is this problem enough to end things with Debbie? The thought of doing that is kind of heartbreaking to me, and yet, I feel I must be realistic and practical. What do you think?

The Panel The Rebbetzin

The Mother

Rebbetzin Faigie Horowitz, M.S. think that this strong difference is a deal breaker. Most families require two incomes today, especially Jewish families. You are an accountant and will always think in terms of the bottom line. Thinking that you will be able to negotiate about this is unrealistic. Debbie is unrealistic. If she expects a family to be supported by an accountant without another income, she is unaware of commitments and practical life. Remember to be respectful and menschlech when you break up.

Sarah Schwartz Schreiber, P.A. ot to downplay your very practical concerns regarding future fiscal responsibility, I believe your worries are a tad premature. I am thinking of my niece, the high-powered COO, who balked at going to college because she “wants to be a full-time Mommy.” Then there’s my neighbor, a devoted Mr. Mom, who opted for laundry and carpool over working on Wall Street. Why are you perseverating over “to work or not to work” when neither you nor Debbie have completed your education? Neither you nor Debbie have started a family. Neither you nor Debbie have confronted a bill or budget. Figuring out whether it’s feasible

I

N

or necessary for Debbie to work outside the home will depend on so many variables: the ages of your children, your salary, her salary, the practicality of two working spouses, child care arrangements, etc. The list goes on and on; you’ll cross that bridge eventually. On the bright side, there is so much good stuff you and Debbie share: wonderful chemistry, hashkafa and, hopefully, the ability to communicate each other’s needs with respect and understanding. Why worry yourself or – gasp! – let go of a good thing over a concept that may or may not surface in the future?

The Shadchan Michelle Mond hroughout the ages, families were able to support themselves with a one-parent income. Over the last few decades, with the rise of modern feminism and cost-of living increases (which came first, the chicken or the egg? That’s a topic for a different discussion), it has become more common for women to work outside the home and harder for families to rely on a one-family income. It does seem as though you’re on the way to a nice, stable, upper-middle-class income that can support a family, without a second income if you felt she was “The One” for you. Frankly, this is a multi-faceted topic which is hard to fully cover in a few short paragraphs. Single-income family spouses have an unwritten mutual agreement that he works outside the home and she works as a stay-at-home mom. It allows her to give her family a warm, loving, nurturing environment where she is constantly “on call” rather than the babysitter. I don’t see why this should create any problematic situations if she’s OK with it. What will pose a problem is if you have a negative attitude towards her because of it. You say that you have great chemistry and mutual attitudes which make you compatible, however, you need to also

respect her perspective on how she sees her future. If you can decide to respect her view on becoming a stay-at-home mom, then continue and see where this goes! Should your income prove to be insufficient, the solution might be for her to work part-time from home, which is extremely common and feasible these days. Talk with her about her attitude towards working if your income proves to be unsustainable for your family. However, if you are fortunate to do well financially, she can spend her days dedicated and devoted to her home and family. Ultimately, this is a topic for you to decide between the two of you. If you are unable to respect her perspective, then you might not be compatible. Hatzlacha!

The Single Tova Wein o one would deny the fact that marriage is not easy. And that is why most proactive young people today try to pre-empt potential problems upfront, rather than wait until after they are married to discover that they have totally different attitudes about some very significant areas. Issues surrounding finances are known to be one of the top reasons for marriages failing. One of those issues pertains to how the young couple envisions their future work-wise. Debbie has not observed a working mother and so this concept is foreign to her. Probably her father is quite successful and therefore it wasn’t an issue in her home. The question is whether Debbie can be at all flexible towards the subject of working. Perhaps she’d be OK with working parttime. Would that do it for you? Perhaps she would agree to work if and when you two start a family and are clearly having problems making ends

the area you would like to raise a family? How many children would you like to have? Can your salary support the family you both envision? Ultimately, after every nook and cranny is explored, it boils down to two factors. 1. Can I ultimately respect her decision to be a stay-at-home mother? Can I be at peace with it? Will I resent her or will I be able to appreciate that my wife wants to do the hard labor of raising a family? (And by the way, the cost of child care is outrageous as well, so her salary would have to be more than what the cost of childcare is to make financial sense.) I’m getting into very nitty gritty details here, but if Debbie is from a comfortable or affluent family, does her vision of being a stay-at-home mom include a live-in housekeeper that will allow her the ease of meeting a friend for lunch or running errands without the kids? 2. Flexibility. If push came to shove, and the family needed the second income, how flexible would Debbie be? If all the girls in your daughter’s class were taking an after-school dance lesson, and your daughter came crying to you that she wants to take it too, would Debbie be flexible about getting a job? Or would you be flexible in sharing Debbie’s position that it is more important for your daughter to have an attentive, present, available mother than it is for this daughter to have the dance lesson?

Considering how strongly you feel about Debbie, I think the two of you have a lot of talking to do. If you walk away from the conversation with a sense that Debbie has zero ability to compromise, or zero understanding of the costly reality of raising an Orthodox family, then that would be a red flag. If, however, Debbie is able to understand and acknowledge your position, or informs you that her family is wealthy and will financially support her choice to stay at home, or comes up with a creative solution (such as a willingness to move to an area where housing is significantly less), then at that point you will have to decide what is more important to you: the stability of a two family income or building a life with Debbie. While people change and their priorities change, it is important to be on the same page before you walk down the aisle. Sincerely, Jennifer

here is nothing more noble or dignified than a woman who wants to be a stay-at-home mother and raise her children. When a woman feels fulfilled in her role of caregiver, the children and husband benefit tremendously. There is a big however coming: However, the price of housing, yeshiva tuitions, summer camp, kosher supermarket bills, sheitels, clothing, medical bills, insurance, shul dues, bar, bat mitzvah and wedding gifts, birthday parties and presents, ice cream truck at the park, Sunday outings for a large family, etc. often necessitate a two-family income, especially in certain more expensive Jewish areas like New York and Los Angeles. (I’m sorry if I caused the reader any anxiety while drinking their Shabbos morning coffee). The reality is that the costs of raising an Orthodox Jewish family are astronomically high. Most people who are not independently wealthy/very comfortable or are supported by parents choose to have a two-income household which will a) give them the ability to pay their bills, or b) allow them some wiggle room in their budget. I understand that you and Debbie have a real relationship with real feelings and there is a lot at stake. Should

you le ave someone because of differing ideas about finances and income? And what if she changes her mind if she needs to one day? (She may!) This is a complicated and personal decision that I cannot answer for you. I will say that I think you are wise to take pause and think about how this may impact you and your future family long-term. I don’t know you and Debbie and I don’t know how she arrived at her decision. Here is what I am wondering about Debbie’s decision to be a stay-athome mom: Is Debbie’s family able and willing to support her and her future family? If that is the case, how do you feel about taking money from your in-laws? If Debbie’s parents aren’t able or planning to support her, what is her vision for her financial lifestyle? Is she OK with not having extras? Are you OK with not having extras? What do the two of you consider to be “extras”? Have the two of you sat down, pen to paper, and discussed what your income will be as an accountant with a starting salary and what your potential income is? Have you thought about

meet. Maybe Debbie is expecting her parents to help out…buy you a home… pay for your children’s tuitions and camp, etc. Who knows? The point is that you and Debbie need to talk it through in a thorough and creative way and see whether there is flexibility and understanding on her part regarding the reality of what it takes to run an Orthodox home. If she is totally shut down to any kind of compromise, I would take that as a serious red flag, pointing to potential trouble down the road. See where your talks take you.

vi Tenenbaum is a volunteer first responder with United Hatzalah of Israel. In addition to being a volunteer EMT who responds to emergency calls on his electric bicycle, Tenenbaum is an advanced Psychotrauma and Crisis Response Unit volunteer and has been since the unit’s inception in April 2016 and is currently the unit’s assistant director in charge of education and international partnerships. He is also the Project Developer of the unit as well as one of its dispatchers. Tenenbaum hails from Chicago and is originally from West Rogers Park. He made aliyah at the age of 17, in 2001, and currently lives in the Ramot neighborhood of Jerusalem with his family. With his electric bicycle, he is able to maneuver through difficult places and terrain allowing him to arrive at places that are difficult to reach and that no one else can get to.

Tenenbaum has a wealth of hands-on training in the field of psychotherapy and he is also an addiction professional, meaning that he specializes in treating behavioral addictions. In addition to his professional practice and his volunteer work with United Hatzalah, Tenenbaum runs his own non-profit organization of Jewish addiction professionals, which brings together Jewish leaders in the field from all over the world. He also specializes in contextual psychology interventions. Tenenbaum is an Orthodox Jew and, as such, has a strong background in dealing with the Orthodox communities both in Israel and the U.S. with the issues surrounding behavioral addiction and their treatments within the Orthodox community.. “Working with United Hatzalah in general and in specific the Psychotrauma and Crisis Response Unit is such a pleasure and a privilege,” he

shares. “I feel that I have not only found a place where I can put my talents and training to good use but that I have found a second family. I am very proud to go out wearing the vest and logo of the organization because it stands for a single-minded and dedicated group of people who are going out of their way to save lives. The people in this organization are always striving to save lives in the most unique ways possible. From the regular volunteers all the way up to the directors, everyone is focused on creating new methodologies to help people in whatever way we can. That is a terrific organization to be a part of.” As part of his responsibilities to the Psychotrauma Unit, Tenenbaum creates all of the educational material for the continuing education of the responders and the educational material used in both the basic and advanced courses as well as the protocols for the unit.

In addition to his work behind the scenes, Tenenbaum also represents the unit at major events and operations, which includes heading international missions such as Hurricane Harvey, and the recent training of a new team in Johannesburg, South Africa. He also works handin-hand with the volunteers and other divisions in United Hatzalah and covers a variety of responsibilities that include, attending funerals, or major large-scale or complex operation where it is expected that there could be many casualties. Due to the newness of the Psychotrauma Unit and the fact that it is the first active unit of its kind in the world, the unit keeps track of all of the statistics regarding the calls that it responds to, including where the geographic locations of the higher call volumes are, what times of day most calls occur and within what segments of the population. AN HARAV AHARON FELDMAN

“Aside from Rabbi Hanoch Teller’s authorship of an exceptional library of very popular books, he is one of the most in-demand docents and lecturers at Yad Vashem, recognized as a scholar of the period. It was only natural that he would combine all of these talents, and Heroic Children is the prodigious outcome. “Writing about the Holocaust is a noble act and an invaluable tribute to the souls and the memory of the murdered saints and martyrs. Heroic Children is as dignified and as venerable as this act can be.”

R ABBI I SRAEL M EIR L AU

Former Chief Rabbi of Israel, Chairman of Yad Vashem “We cannot change the past, but by remembering it, we can change the future. On no issue is this more vital than the Holocaust, all the more so since the survivors are growing older and fewer, while anti-Semitism, almost unbelievably, has returned to the arena of global politics. “This makes Rabbi Hanoch Teller’s masterpiece, Heroic Children, a necessary work as well as an outstanding one. It is an astonishing collection of stories about child survivors of the Shoah, each gripping narrative of courage, defiance and hope, a flame lit by the human spirit in the darkest night history has ever known. A superb and unforgettable work!”

R ABBI LORD J ONATHAN S ACKS

Emeritus Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom “For the stories in Heroic Children, conveyed so poignantly and accurately, Hanoch Teller has put all of the students of the Holocaust—and of the human condition—in his debt.”

Untold Stories of the Unconquerable

Love is vital to life . Everyone needs the light of love, even if he doesn’t realize it. Without this essential nutrient that G-d made available in unlimited supply, we can’t become who He created us to be. The Torah abounds with references to love. Love is the cornerstone of our relationship with G-d. Love sets the standard for our dealings with others and ourselves as reflected in the laws of bein adam l’chaveiro (between man and his friend) where we’re instructed to “love your fellow as yourself.” So why do so many feel love lacking in their lives? Why are so many hearts closed and hurting? Why is it often hard to be loving to oneself or others? How can we reach the light of love hidden in each of us? In The Inner Light of Love, Miriam Millhauser Castle offers inspired and practical guidance drawn from her decades of healing and teaching work, helping to open the hearts of Jews around the world. Engaging real-life stories show how everyone can cultivate love regardless of life circumstances. As Rabbi Dovid Castle’s beautiful Torah insights make clear, Hashem is our teacher in the ways of love as in everything else. By helping us connect to Him, Torah, Klal Yisrael, the soul dimension, AND to ourselves, The Inner Light of Love charts a path to the boundless self-nurturing wellsprings of love in each of us – and an outpouring of love for others.

It has a very special community feeling that I miss and, even though it is a large Jewish community, it is a very close community and I miss that atmosphere.” Every now and then, Tenenbaum gets to connect his two homes. “Yesterday, a Chicagoan called me up on the phone who was having a medical emergency for one of his family members because he knew I was in United Hatzalah and I put him through to 1221, who then dispatched first responders and saved the life of the person’s relative.” All in a day’s work.

Dirshu

Gedolei Roshei Yeshivos Address Bachurim Entering Yeshiva Gedolah

HaGaon Harav Gershon Edelstein, Shlita, and HaGaon HaRav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, Shlita, Offer Invaluable Guidance By Chaim Gold There was a palpable hush in the audience as the venerated Rosh Yeshiva of Ponovezh, HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein, shlita, slowly made his way into the Armanot Chein Hall in Bnei Brak, this past Thursday night, 8 Av/July 20. More than 2,000 bachurim craned their necks to catch a glimpse of the Rosh Yeshiva as he arrived. They sat, completely still, listening with bated breath to the words of guidance that they would take with them as they made the transition to yeshiva gedolah. The Dirshu ‘Seder Hachanah’ Event is a unique maamad specifically designed for one demographic, the bachurim leaving yeshiva ketana, (high school aged yeshiva) and entering yeshiva gedolah, (beis medrash level). The transition from yeshiva ketana – a system that is very regimented - to yeshiva gedolah which offers much more independent learning is truly significant and can literally mean the difference between a life time of success in learning or challilah the opposite. Dirshu brought together leading Gedolei Yisroel to impart life-giving guidance to the bachurim to prepare them for this milestone transition. The highlight was the presence and guidance of Rav Gershon Edelstein. In addition to Rav Gershon, comprehensive addresses were given by HaGaon HaRav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of the Slabodka Yeshiva, HaGaon HaRav Uri Weisblum, shlita, Mashgiach of Yeshiva Nachlas Halevi’im and a talmid muvhak of the famed Mashgiach, HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Wolbe, zt”l, and HaRav Yehoshua Mishkovsky, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Imrei Moshe. The event was chaired by HaRav Dovid Hillel, shlita, a Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Birchas Ephraim. Rav Dovid Hofstedter, Nasi of Dirshu, also delivered an inspiring address.

Rav Gershon Edelstein: The Synthesis of Sevarah and Yeidas HaTorah Rav Gershon, who has been delivering a daily shiur to bachurim in yeshiva gedolah for more than sixty years, said, “The way to acquire Torah in yeshiva gedolah is with sevarah, to truly find the underlying logic and premise behind the words of the Gemara and Rishonim. When a bachur understands the depth of a sevarah he gains a taam in learning, a geshmak in learning. It is that taam that empowers him to ultimately acquire a kinyan, a true acquisition of his learning.” Rav Gershon than forcefully added a caveat. “It is impossible to really understand sevarah, without yedias haTorah, without knowledge of the Torah. Every bachur must make it a high priority to acquire yedias haTorah. It is not as hard as one might think.” Rav Gershon explained, “I know bachurim who know all of Shas and they are regular, normal bachurim, not extreme in any way. How do they do it? The utilize their time in yeshiva properly. For example, morning seder is primarily

designed for bachurim to prepare for the shiur. For many bachurim, preparation does not take an entire seder. They are left with extra time. Every bachur should undertake at least to complete the entire masechta that the yeshiva is learning. Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch: One’s Entire Life Is Built on the Foundation of Yeshiva Gedolah.” Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, gave a comprehensive address replete with practical hadracha. “The first thing a bachur should know,” Rav Hirsch said, “is that on Rosh Chodesh Elul, you will be making what might be the most transformative change of your life. One’s entire life is built on the foundation that you make in yeshiva gedolah.” Another important point Rav Hirsch made is that yeshiva gedolah is a fresh slate! Even someone who was not so successful in yeshiva ketanah is empowered to make a fresh start and should come in with great she’ifos. Rav Moshe Hillel cautioned, “Not all bachurim feel the sweetness and geshmak of learning right away. For some it takes time. No bachur should become bothered when it doesn’t happen immediately. If he perseveres, eventually he will have a true geshmak and satisfaction in learning.” The Importance of a Bachur Recognizing His Abilities Rav Dovid Hofstedter imparted divrei chizuk and guidance to the bachurim. As the event was held before Tisha B’Av, Rav Hofstedter cited a practical lesson to be learned from Yirmiyahu Hanavi. “Hashem tells Yirmiyahu, ‘Before you were born you were destined to be a Navi. That is your essence, your tachlis.’ What did Yirmiyahu answer? ‘Oy Hashem! You know that I am but a ‘naar,’ devoid of knowledge and wisdom…’ Hashem then answers him, ‘You are not a naar and you will go where I send you….

“The question is obvious,” continued Rav Dovid, “Hashem Himself tells Yirmiyahu you were born to be a Navi and Yirmiyahu appears to contradict Him by responding I don’t know how to speak, I am a naar?” The answer provides guidance and insight to every Yid and especially to bachurim entering yeshiva gedolah, “There are bachurim who have unbelievable ability. They are blessed with great intellect and they can truly go far and accomplish so much. Nevertheless, at times those same bachurim say, “Who am I? I am just a naar!” They don’t recognize their own kochos. This is a great nisayon. A bachur can go for years without recognizing how much ability he really has. Every bachur must possess the bitachon that Hashem gave him abilities and he is obligated to use those abilities that Hashem has given him!” The Three Deterrents to Success in Learning: Kinnah, Taavah and Kavod! Rav Yehoshua Mishkovsky, a close talmid of the Rosh Yeshiva, HaGaon HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, zt”l, told a personal story that made a great impact on the tzibbur. “I want to share a personal experience that I had when I was exactly your age. Thirty years ago, I went into the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Shteinman and asked for guidance before entering yeshiva gedolah. He told me, ‘Every bachur has the ability to grow tremendously in Torah. There, are however, three things that extinguish his ability to grow. They are kinnah, taavah and kavod!’ The ripple effect of the kinnus for bachurim is incalculable. One look at the smiling faces of the bachurim exiting the gathering made it clear how glad they were to have heard practical guidance from the Gedolei Hador on what may be the most important period of growth in their lives.

Health & F tness

What are Nightshades and are They Bad for You? By Aliza Beer MS, RD

N

ightshades have a deadly reputation. They supposedly aggravate a variety of chronic conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and IBS. The nightshades, also known as Solanaceae, encompass a whole family of flowering plants that includes many very popular fruits and vegetables that people eat daily. The nightshades include: • Tomatoes • Eggplant • Potatoes (not sweet potatoes or yams) • Goji berries • Tobacco • Peppers (including bell peppers, chili peppers, paprika, tamales, pimentos, tomatillos, cayenne, etc.) At first glance the nightshades may look like a random collection of foods that couldn’t possibly be related. However, every nightshade plant produces glycoalkaloids, a natural pesticide. They are bitter compounds found throughout the plant, but their concentrations are especially high in leaves, flowers, and unripe fruits. They are there to defend plants against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and insects. Glycoalkaloids kill pests in two ways. First, they bind strongly to the cholesterol in the cell membranes of predators, and in doing so, they disrupt the structure of those membranes, causing cells to leak or burst open upon contact. Second, they block the enzyme cholinester-

ase. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down acetylcholine, a vital neurotransmitter that carries signals between nerve cells and muscle cells. When this important enzyme is blocked, acetylcholine can accumulate and electrically overstimulate the predator’s muscle cells. This can lead to paralysis, convulsions, respiratory arrest, and death. Military “nerve gases” work exactly the same way. So how do glycoalkaloids in nightshades affect humans? Studies done on animals are inconclusive, but the

testine and flood the bloodstream. In two separate studies of mice with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, the alkaloids in potatoes were found to adversely affect intestinal permeability and increase intestinal inflammation. Some experts believe that leaky gut can contribute to higher levels of inflammation all over the body that worsen disease symptoms. Many people with IBD, celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis have eliminated nightshades from their diet and report great improve-

science points to possible increases in joint stiffness and pain. Research suggests glycoalkaloids could be one potential cause of “leaky gut” syndromes due to their ability to poke holes in cells. Leaky gut, or intestinal permeability, is a condition in which the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged, causing undigested food particles, toxic waste products, and bacteria to leak through the in-

ment in symptoms, but evidence for this recommendation right now is mainly anecdotal and further research on humans needs to be done. We do know that glycoalkaloids in high amounts is toxic to both humans and animals. Other groups of people without autoimmune conditions claim that eliminating nightshades has dramatically improved their health. These

people are often said to be “sensitive” to nightshades. One of these groups of people include those suffering from arthritis and claim that eliminating nightshades provides pain relief. I watched firsthand many years ago how eliminating tomatoes and peppers from my father’s diet helped him significantly reduce his arthritic pain. There is a theory that the nightshades also contain a form of vitamin D that causes calcium deposits that contribute to joint pain and other arthritis symptoms. If you are healthy and do not have adverse reactions to nightshades, there is no compelling reason to avoid them. They are rich in nutrients and offer several potential health benefits; tomatoes are a good source of vitamins A and C, and an antioxidant called lycopene; peppers are very high in vitamin C which helps enhance iron absorption; eggplants are a good source of dietary fiber; and potatoes contain fair amounts of potassium, vitamin B6 and manganese. On the other hand, if you have an autoimmune condition like IBD, or suspect that you may be sensitive to nightshades, you may want to consider removing them from your diet to evaluate changes in symptoms. If you decide to do this, completely eliminate all nightshades fruits, vegetables, and products (for example, paprika is found in many spice mixes and sauces/marinades) for at least four weeks. Be sure to keep track of

consume citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit in order to get your vitamin C. Nightshades contain important nutrients, and most people should be encouraged to eat them. Nevertheless, research suggests that people with autoimmune diseases may want to consider eliminating nightshades for a period of time to see if their symptoms improve. If you feel that you are sensitive to nightshades,

there are plenty of other fruits and vegetables you can eat instead as part of a healthy diet. As always, please discuss any potential dietary changes with your physician first. ArtScroll Yerushalmi Ready for New Learning Cycle The Next Daf Yomi Begins on August 4th It was at the Sixth Knessiah Gedolah of Agudath Israel, in Jerusalem, that a historic proclamation was made. The day was 18 Teves, 5740/1980. The speaker was the Lev Simchah, the Gerrer Rebbe. The proclamation was that it was time for the Torah world to begin a new Daf Yomi program, the daily study of Talmud Yerushalmi. The Yerushalmi Daf Yomi program takes 4.5 years and it is now celebrating its ninth siyum. The Schottenstein Editions of the Talmud Bavli in Hebrew and English — and in French, as the Edmond J. Safra Edition— have contributed tremendously to the spread of Talmud study in general, and Daf Yomi study in particular. It has been estimated that of the 90,000 participants at the MetLife Stadium celebration of the last siyum, more than half were there thanks to ArtScroll’s authoritative editions. Now the same is happening regarding the Yerushalmi.

New Era of Yerushalmi Study In recent years, the Yerushalmi Daf Yomi program has gained growing impetus, thanks to ArtScroll/Mesorah’s Schottenstein Edition in both Hebrew and English. Historically, study of Yerushalmi was extremely limited and difficult. Roman hatred and persecution of the Jewish Yishuv in Eretz Yisrael remained intense after the destruction of the Second Beis HaMikdash and the failed Bar Kochba rebellion. In approximately 400 C.E, Rome’s relentless pressure forced an end to the development of the Yerushalmi, before it could be completely organized and edited. The style of the Yerushalmi is terse and difficult, and its Aramaic dialect is different from that of the Talmud Bavli. Due to Roman cruelty, there were very few handwritten manuscripts and they were not available for centuries; according to many authorities, Rashi never saw the Yerushalmi. And when

texts were found, they were filled with errors. The result was that Yerushalmi was neglected for centuries and could be understood only by the greatest scholars. And — there was no Rashi commentary! mi

The Necessity to Study Yerushal-

Such historic luminaries as Arizal and the Vilna Gaon advocated study of Yerushalmi. Rambam frequently rules like the Yerushalmi over the Bavli. HaRav Chaim Kanievsky urges that Yerushalmi be studied in conjunction with the Bavli, and his regular shiurim on Yerushalmi are transcribed and published. Especially in our time, study of Yerushalmi is essential because only the Yerushalmi — not the Bavli — has Gemara on Seder Zeraim, which makes it the primary source for the day-to-day agricultural laws of Israel. Study of the Yerushalmi is becoming more popular. But the lack of commentaries and the difficulty of the text make Yerushalmi study almost impossible for the ordinary scholar, much less the layman. The ArtScroll/Mesorah Edition Now, thanks to ArtScroll/Mesorah, that has changed. In the words of Rabbi Yehezkel Danziger, editorial director of the project, “The Schottenstein Edition provides a thorough explanation of the text and makes the Yerushalmi accessible to everyone, in both English and Hebrew.” It includes a corrected text of the Gemara. At the urging of HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, ArtScroll has added commentaries not readily available, including that of Rav Shlomo of Sirilio, which Rav

Chaim recommends most highly. The ArtScroll elucidation is based not only on the commentaries printed in the familiar Vilna Edition, but also on other excellent works. In addition, where necessary, the editors include an elucidation of alternate versions of the Talmud text, such as that of the Vilna Gaon. This edition also discusses cases where the Yerushalmi diverges from the Bavli. Encouragement of Gedolim The work was begun with the encouragement of HaRav Yosef Shalom Eliyashiv and other great Torah leaders in Israel and America. After examining the new edition, HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman was so impressed that he adopted it as the text for his weekly shiur in Yerushalmi, and he graciously sent a letter of commendation. To date, the ArtScroll/Mesorah edition comprises all of Seder Zeraim and Seder Moed in Hebrew and English, as well as some of Seder Nashim and Seder Nezikin. Forty-three volumes are currently available in English and twenty-nine in Hebrew. The elucidation is already acknowledged as a classic. Large teams of scholars in America and Israel are hard at work producing further volumes. In the words of Rabbi Meir Zlotowitz, the founder of ArtScroll/Mesorah, “This may well be the most important project we have ever undertaken, because Yerushalmi was like a treasure locked in a vault without keys for more than 16 centuries. Baruch Hashem, that is no longer the case.” The next cycle starts on August Fourth…. Now you can be a part of it!”

Makin’ it RAIN! By Azi Rosenblum

As of Wednesday morning, BWI Airport reported 13.36 inches of rain for the month of July. This month has taken its place as the wettest July ever, surpassing the 11.03-inch record holder of July 1889, and even closing in fast on being Baltimore’s wettest month ever with just August of 1955 and 1933 holding it back from first place. As you see from the forecast as of Wednesday, clear skies are not in our immediate future. (NOTE: The final time for the sanctification of the New Moon of Av is the entire night following Thursday, July 26 (15 Av). If necessary, the new moon may be sanctified Friday night until 1:11 A.M.)

jet stream blows across North America in a snaking west to east direction. However, it is taking an unseasonably low (south) swing down to the Gulf

that we all put on our “best” persona publicly. Don’t assume you know what is really going on in someone’s world and “air” on the side of cau-

So… what precipitated this topic? Is this a weather column now? Hang in there a drop longer and go with the flow. This issues column was inspired by this week’s meteorological conditions, a lot of talk radio due to recently concluded religious restrictions, and my own experiences as a business owner, consultant, and being just another guy trying to make a living. So why all the rain all of a sudden? Unusual conditions that involve jet streams & high pressure! In English: jet streams are strong, fast, and narrow air currents caused by all kinds of science stuff I won’t try to explain (or understand), but they are always there and are the reason a flight back from Israel is longer than the flight there. In fact, jet streams have a significant role in the aviation business and planes save lots of money on fuel riding the wind when possible. As to the rains we have been experiencing, the main

then hitting a high-pressure system that is like a weather wall along the East Coast, redirecting its winds north along the coastal states. This is resulting in the jet stream dumping incredible amounts of moisture that it picked up from the Gulf and a bunch of tropical moisture it pulled in along the way as it travels north. In even simpler terms: you decide to put a Crock Pot of cholent for a kiddush you are hosting right near your HVAC unit at your home… now your whole house smells like cholent because the jet streams of air running through your ductwork are picking up the heavenly smell of cholent and distributing it everywhere. Making a living is hard (see article from July 2017 called FrumONomics). We all experience it at one level or another. B’H some are blessed with exceptional Mazal in Parnasa, and while sometimes it really is as good as it looks, it’s important to remember

tion. Friendliness, non-judgementalism and kindness are advisable at all times because you really never know where someone is at, and you should keep that in mind before you decide that you are a failure too. Like most (if not all), Parnasa is often on my mind. Recently, when a financial talk show was on the radio as I drove I heard something that really struck me in a top of the hour opening monologue by the host. To paraphrase, he said that you can only reduce spending so much, you can cut the coffee run, skip some extras, but for most of us that’s just not enough. What you really need to do is increase your income. Not to minimize the power of spending less (every $100 less you spend a month is $1200 a year!), but his point was that at a certain stage you just can’t spend less. Or, here it comes: you look at the rain this past week and you realize

that the winds are blowing like they always do, the air is humid in the Gulf and tropical areas like it always is, and high-pressure systems are moving toward the East Coast like they often do. Yet this last week and for the next week or so, the combination of impenetrable pressure and a shift in direction created a whole new type of result. I share this with you as someone who also has his good months and bad months. It’s hard to admit sometimes but we have all been there, transferring from savings to checking before approaching the register at the grocery store or having to say no to purchases you kinda felt you should be able to afford. We each have our story, our limits, and our potential, but I think the most powerful thing we can do is step back, evaluate our jet streams of effort and where we place our high-pressure blocks and shift, re-align, tweak things until we see a change in result. If the winds blew the same way each day and all climate conditions remained steady, so would the daily forecast. We can’t let that be the forecast of our financial future, otherwise we can’t expect anything more than what we had the day before. This goes for our homes, our businesses, and our institutions alike. Adjust direction, apply pressure, daven, and never forget, “wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.” Anthony J. D’Angelo MAKE IT RAIN! Mental Health Corner

The Rambam on Depression By Rabbi Azriel Hauptman

Depression is a well-known mental health disorder. Still, it is a disorder subject to some confusion, because everyone feels down or sad every now and then. Clinical depression is much more than that; it is a serious illness. When someone has depression, it hinders his daily life and causes pain to the depressed individual and to those who care about him. Unfortunately, there is a stigma associated with mental health disorders. Sometimes we are tempted to view depression as a disorder that was “discovered” in recent times. Furthermore, there is a notion that it is somehow un-Jewish to suffer from depression. Shouldn’t the Torah infuse our hearts with happiness or at least provide the remedy for depression? We must realize that not only are mental health disorders as real as other medical conditions that have been around for time immemorial, but also that Chazal in many places discuss depression and many other forms of mental illness. Let us give one example. The Mishna in Mesechta Shabbos (Daf 29b) tells us (according to the Gemara’s interpretation) that it is permitted to extinguish a candle on Shabbos if someone’s life is in danger due to an “Evil Spirit,” since the Evil Spirit can possibly be fatal if the patient is exposed to candlelight. What is this Evil Spirit that the Mishnah is describing? The Rambam (1138 – 1204), in his commentary to the Mishnah, explains, “The Evil Spirit is referring to melancholy. There is a type of melancholy that will cause the ill person to lose his mind when he sees light or when he is amongst other people. He finds peace only in darkness, in solitude, and in desolate places.” “Melancholy” is an ancient term for depression which the Rambam was very familiar with and which was the term for depression in the English language as well until the 20th century. (The word melan-

choly means black bile in Greek as the ancient Greeks believed that the cause of depression is an excess of black bile. In classic Rabbinic literature, the term mara shechora is used for depression, which also means black bile.) The word depression was coined by the mental health profession, causing the word melancholy to be phased out. Incredibly enough, the Rambam also offers therapeutic advice for people who suffer from depression. In Shemona Perakim (“Eight Chapters” – the Rambam’s introduction to Avos) in Chapter 5, the Rambam writes, “If a person develops melancholy, he should eliminate it by listening to music and songs, by strolling in gardens and amongst beautiful buildings, and by sitting amongst beautiful images, and other ways of broadening the mind, and then he will remove the distress of his melancholy.” Clearly, the Rambam’s advice is based on the information available in medieval times. Today, mental health professionals have many different tools in their toolbox to treat depression, ranging from psychotherapy to psychotropic medications. However, one lesson we can learn from the Rambam is that “there is nothing new under the sun,” and that people have been dealing with depression for thousands of years. There is nothing shameful about it, and nothing un-Jewish about seeking treatment for depression and other mental health disorders. Just as the Rambam enlightens the Torah for us in so many ways, he also shines a bright light onto the mental health field advising us to use whatever means are available to us to treat mental health conditions. This is a service of Relief Resources. Relief is an organization that provides mental health referrals, education, and support to the frum community. Rabbi Yisrael Slansky is director of the Baltimore branch of Relief. He can be contacted at 410-448-8356 or at yslansky@reliefhelp.org

THE BALTIMORE JEWISH HOME

Ernie Pyle and His Words of Wisdom

JULY 26, 2018

Pyle went to Indiana University and then worked at a few newspapers. In 1926 he went on a cross country trip and became so enamored with aviation that he became the country’s first reporter to write a column about the topic. Even the legendary Amelia Earhart said, “Any aviator who didn’t know Pyle was a nobody.” Several years later he wrote a column about the people he met on his excursions in California. Combining his passion for aviation and the military in general and his unique style of writing about people his columns during World War II were among the most popular on the home front. In 1940 he took his talents to England to cover the Battle of Britain and instantly became America’s most popular war columnist. Some 400 daily and 300 weekly newspa-

pers and magazines ran his articles. Pyle’s columns never glorified war but showed how a typical combat soldier lived on the battlefront – not just the overall picture of war. His sensitivity, warmth and humor showed both on the frontlines and in his articles, as he usually wrote the names, ranks and hometowns of ordinary soldiers in his works. He once said of a unit that he was attached to that they were “the guys that wars cannot be won without.” Pyle wrote about everything that the soldiers went through including family back home, the food, the equipment, their enlistment and many other topics. It was these columns that made him a real crowd-pleaser both at home and on the front. Pyle’s works during World War II were compiled into several books.

“Here is Your War” tells of his time with the American soldiers in North Africa. “Brave Men” was published in 1944 and recounts his adventures with GI’s during the Sicily and Normandy invasions and the campaigns that followed. The name came from a British officer whom Pyle wrote about as he was seeing dead men on the battlefield. “And the veteran English soldier remarked time and again, in a sort of hushed eulogy spoken only to himself, ‘Brave Men. Brave Men.’” “The Last Chapter” is his works in the Pacific including the invasion of Okinawa. While in Sicily a sergeant from the 54th Division asked Pyle, “You don’t write news stories do you?” To which Pyle answers, as quoted in his book, “I told him no, that I just tried to write what the war was like, and

few issues back we discussed some military quotes that inspired troops on the battlefield and folks back on the home front. The response from readers was positive, and there were requests for a second installment, so here it is! One of the greatest World War II correspondents was Ernie Pyle. He was a legend among the soldiers that he campaigned with and was famous back home for his columns. Here are some of Pyle’s quotes and a bit about one of the most beloved war correspondents in the 20th century. Ernie Pyle, who was not Jewish, was born in 1900 in Indiana. At the age of seventeen he joined the Navy Reserve and served until the end of World War I in 1918. After the war

Pyle, with goggles, converses with a tank crew

didn’t even especially look for hero stories, since there are so many guys who were heroes without there being any story to it.” Pyle also wrote about the regular A merican soldier: “They were American boys who by mere chance of fate had wound up with guns in their hands, sneaking up a death-laden street in a strange and shattered city in a faraway country in a driving rain. They were afraid, but it was beyond their power to quit… And even though they weren’t warriors born to the kill, they won their battles.” Ernie Pyle made himself beloved to the regular soldier when he wrote, “I love the infantry because they are the underdogs. They are the mudrain-frost-and-wind boys. They have no comforts, and they even learn to live without the necessities. And in the end they are the guys that wars can’t be won without.” One of the more famous quotes said during World War II has been attributed to Pyle. “There are no atheists in foxholes” was said after seeing men hunker down in their foxholes during an artillery barrage. These barrages could last for a long time and it is said that many men became religious while the German 88mm guns were booming overhead. He later said about American artillery which hadn’t been easy to get to the front, “Our artillery has

really been sensational. For once we have enough of something and at the right time. Officers tell me they actually have more guns than they know what to do with.” He also said, “Our artillery... The Germans feared it almost more than anything we had.” After his time in France Pyle went to the Pacific and was stationed on the light carrier USS Cabot. Pyle wrote about landing airplanes on the carrier, “The first time you see a plane land on a carrier you almost die… It is so fast, timing is so split second, space is so small – well, somebody said that the carrier pilots were the best in the world, and they must have been or there wouldn’t be any of them left.” His accurate depictions of life for the average servicemen were spot on. Sadly, in April 1945, as he was covering the Army’s 77 th Division on a small island off of Okinawa named Ie Shima, a sniper’s bullet struck Pyle in the head. The country’s most beloved wartime correspondent was dead at the age of 45, just six days after President Roosevelt’s death. Right before he was killed near an American command post Pyle wrote the last paragraph that was included in his book “The Last Chapter”: “Instead of a war weariness, there seems to be a new eagerness among our forces to sweep on and on, and wind up the thing in a

hurry.” Three months later the war was over. Many of Ernie Pyle’s previously unseen columns were finally published in the post-war years.

What in Helsinki Happened? By Nate Davis

I

a sense of his soul.” Good thing he stuck to his day job. Well, maybe not. He kind of got us into a few pointless wars. And, perhaps the best edition of Crazy Stuff That Happens When U.S. and Russian Presidents Meet took place in 1995 when Russian President Boris Yeltsin came to the White House for a summit with President Clinton and Secret Service agents found him late one night in a drunken stupor on Pennsylvania Avenue standing alone in his underwear while trying to hail a taxi to get pizza. Yeah, it was really weird how quickly he picked up on Clinton’s habits. But all of that is in the past and all of that is meaningless. When judging Trump’s performance, you can never use his predecessors as a baseline or standard because that elicits a shrill accusation of “whataboutism!” (If you don’t know what that is, it is a newly crafted term that the left uses anytime you try to compare Trump’s actions to those of his predecessors.) So, rather than engage in whataboutism, I will concede that it is possible that the Helsinki summit with Putin this week was not Trump’s finest moment. The saving grace for Trump is that

rather than saying it like that – it was not Trump’s finest moment – the media/left quickly and eagerly amped up their criticism of his performance to Defcon One. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi declared, “President Trump cowered in the presence of Putin and the entire world watched.” Senator Schumer suggested that Putin has real dirt on Trump and is blackmailing him. Former CIA Director John Brennan called Trump’s performance “nothing short of treasonous.” And then there was MSNBC contributor Jill Wine-Bank. She compared Trump’s performance to 9/11, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Pearl Harbor and Kristallnacht. Ding. Ding. Ding... Ladies and gentlemen, the winner of today’s freak-out contest is Jill Wine-Bank! … Oh, by the way, she also wins Best Surname of the Day award! Come back tomorrow – same time, same place – for freak-out contest, installation 576! Actually, ding, ding, ding, Trump is the winner. He is once again saved by the massive hysteria of the media/left. Rather than honestly assessing his performance and commenting on it,

they go gangbusters on him with such over-the-top criticism that they actually help him. Their overreaction causes an adverse reaction. Think about it like this: imagine that you are called to your son’s principal’s office and in a somber voice the principal says, “Your son did something horrible. It’s so bad that I can’t even believe it. I mean he should be expelled immediately.” As beads of sweat break out on your forehead you brace yourself for the worst. You slump at the edge of your seat and listen as the principal says in a slow and hushed tone: “Your. Son. Stole. A. Lollipop.” Wooow! You almost gave me a heart attack! In an instant your fear turns to confusion, then anger. Not at your little-angel-lollipop-thief but at the principal. Why? Because the principal way oversold the crime. In fact, the first thing you do when you leave that office is give your little Al Capone a lollipop. After all, he’s the one that has to put up with this horrible principal every day. am convinced that when world leaders schedule their summits they think not of the most exotic location but of the location with the most exotic name. This way the summit is memorable. For years to come, pundits can pontificate about Potsdam, Yalta, Vladivostock and Reykjavík. Now we can add Helsinki to the list, although based on the media/left’s reaction to this summit, they might as well call it Hiroshima or Nagasaki. Weird things tend to happen when U.S. presidents meet their Russian counterparts. President Obama tried his hand at karaoke when he met Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Seoul in 2012. Into a hot mic he said, “This is my last election... After my election I will have more flexibility.” The second stanza was sung by Medvedev, who responded, “I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.” Yes, that Vladimir – the real boss, Vladimir Putin. And no, they didn’t sing, they just said the lyrics in prose...puppets being puppets. Then there was George W. Bush who became a psychic after his 2001 Slovenia summit with Putin when he proudly declared, “I was able to get

us – were trying to get through another workday, reports of this week’s apocalypse fanned across our various screens... Trump is a traitor! Oh my gosh, did you hear what he said?! He’s a Russian agent! Putin is blackmailing him! For the remainder of the day big chunks of political debris were strewn across the hemisphere, in the form of various ominous pings and alerts on our phones – he must be “impeached”... “indicted”... “committed.” As supporters reached for their Trumpacids, which admittedly many take often for Trump-induced heartburn, many thought, “Gosh, this time it must be really bad… Is he toast?” Then, as the dust settled and things calmed down a bit, they decided to do their own investigation and analysis because normal people don’t like being dictated to about what to think. Perhaps they watched the whole press conference, listened to some of it or read some parts of it. Hmm... Trump said, “I have great confidence in my intelligence people but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today.” OK, certainly not artful, but is it really that bad? Pretty quickly they realized that once again the media/left was in a meltdown because the kid stole a lollipop. Gosh, these media/leftist people better stop doing this to me! But it goes even a step further. Once people determined that the overreaction was another Trump Derangement Syndrome belch and they were freed from the oh-gosh-the-skyis-falling-anxiety, there was a desire to try to figure out what really took place, from a logical perspective. And after the anxiety receptors dissipated, they realized that it is actually a healthy and rehabilitative exercise to replace that negative energy with thoughtful analysis. Once that happened, there were any number of conclusions that could be reached about the Helsinki Summit. Yes, it’s possible – as noted above – that it was not Trump’s finest moment. Perhaps he was tired, intimidated, uncomfortable or simply off of his game. Maybe. But it is also entirely possible

that everything took place exactly as planned. Any honest analysis of a political event such as this must acknowledge that there is usually more that we don’t know than that we do know. One thing, though, that we all do know about Putin is that he loves to look

next day that he does believe that there was Russian meddling is insignificant to Putin because it was not in his presence; it serves as a necessary footnote to inoculate Trump from criticism in the future that he sided with Putin over his intelligence agencies while on foreign soil.)

“Go ahead, diss my intelligence agencies, throw soccer balls at me, knock yourself out, tough guy.”

like a tough guy. He’s the real macho man. He swims with sharks, walks around bare-chested in Siberia, and chases bear with his bare hands. OK, that’s his shtick. He needs to look like the conqueror all of the time. Especially when he is standing on a podium with the leader of the free world hovering six inches over him. Well, what does Trump need from Putin? Cooperation on North Korea, Syria, Iran and China, to start. OK, then, how about this for a deal? Putin tells Trump in their private meeting: “I’ll help you with North Korea, Syria, Iran, China, etc. but on one condition. Don’t try to scold me in front of the entire world about meddling in your elections. After all, I’m stealth. If you make me look bad, you’re on your own and I will be your worst enemy. But if you make me look good, we are going to do a lot of business together.” Trump and Putin then come out to their press conference and Trump is thinking, “Go ahead, diss my intelligence agencies, throw soccer balls at me, knock yourself out, tough guy. If that’s what it will take to get you to work with me on these issues, then have at it!” Well, if that is what happened in the background, maybe Trump is not that dumb after all. Maybe he showed the ultimate restraint during the press conference in order to accomplish his objectives. (The fact that Trump clarified the

Perhaps some cannot reach this conclusion because they don’t believe that the person who made himself a billionaire and then the biggest reality TV star and then the president of the United States has any ability

for restraint. Maybe he does; maybe he doesn’t. But is it so farfetched to say that he has the ability for delayed gratification? Running for president for three years can’t be fun, especially for a supposed germaphobe like him, but the prize was worth it at the end. Maybe this prize too will be worth it at the end. Maybe Trump will look like the biggest genius in history when – with Russia’s backing – he forces Iran to renegotiate the nuclear deal or when North Korea denuclearizes because Russia stops funneling them the materials they rely on. Will the Kristallnacht and treason pundits remember how to say “Helsinki” then or will they be in a tizzy about whatever the apocalypse of Day 987 may be? Hmm... hard question. Come to think of it, this summit may one day go down as one of Trump’s greatest accomplishments. Just to make sure he gets the credit he deserves, Trump should have held it at Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Wales. Let the pundits crack their teeth on that.

ible!) The bill caps the new deduction at $500 for individuals and $1,000 for joint filers. Here’s the catch. Everyone knows that medical and dental expenses are “deductible.” But look a little closer and you’ll see that code section 213 lets you deduct them only if you itemize, which leaves about 90% of Americans sitting on the bench. And

you reimburse PHIT expenses from those accounts. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill would cost the Treasury save taxpayers $3.5 billion over the next decade. That’s enough to get special interests interested. The Wall Street Journal reports that “Fitbit, Inc., the American Heart Association and the American Sports

Sorry, golfers, hitting the links doesn’t count as “exercise.”

even if you itemize, you can only deduct the amount of expenses over 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. So, on its face, the new deduction won’t mean much. It turns out, however, that millions of Americans who can’t itemize can still benefit from tax-advantaged flexible spending accounts, medical expense reimbursement plans, and health savings accounts. The bill lets

and Fitness Association have all lobbied for the bill.” And Planet Fitness stock climbed more than 4% the day the bill passed. Of course it wouldn’t be a tax law without a few, ah, provisos, and a couple of quid pro quos. Sorry, golfers, hitting the links doesn’t count as “exercise.” Same for hunting, sailing, and horseback riding. And couch potatoes need not apply: “qualified

sports and fitness expenses” won’t include instructional videos, books, or similar materials. You’d think a bill attacking America’s expanding waistline would be universally popular. Even potato chip companies can back a law designed to work off calories after they’re eaten. But not everyone is enthusiastic. Leonard Burnham, a former Clinton administration tax official and (apparently) a worldclass buzzkill, told the Journal that the benefit would mostly go to highincome families that are already buying gym memberships anyway, and “every principle of tax policy is violated by this.” Fortunately for the rest of us, you don’t need to be taking advantage of good policy to save money on taxes. You just need a trainer and a plan. Find some time between trips to the gym to put a plan into place – and let your tax bill shed some pounds!

hen Congress raises the hood on the tax code, they’re usually working to raise money to pay for government. But sometimes they’re more interested in nudging us to behave in ways they can’t legislate directly. Take the mortgage interest deduction, for example, which “cost” the Treasury $69.7 billion in 2013. That deduction encourages millions of Americans to spend billions of dollars buying homes, building homes, renovating money pits, and keeping their homes looking spiffy — all of which returns billions more through our overall economy. Last week, the House Ways and Means Committee passed another one of those “we-know-we-can’tmake-you-do-this-but-we-can-stillgive-you-a-tax-break-for-it” laws. The Personal Health Investment Today (“PHIT”) Act would let you take medical deductions for general fitness expenses: gym memberships, exercise classes and personal trainers, sports and fitness equipment, and even pay-to-play school sports fees and race registration fees. Preparation: Remove oven racks, and preheat oven to “warm.” For this recipe, you will need a small, medium, and large bowl. 1. In small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water, and add 1 Tbl. sugar. Set aside. 2. In a large bowl, combine all dry ingredients (i.e., flours, xanthan gum, garlic, rosemary, sugar, salt, and baking powder). Set aside. 3. In bowl of mixer, fitted with whisk attachment, beat egg whites until foamy. Add 1 Tbl. of sugar and continue beating until stiff. Put most of the egg whites into medium bowl, and set aside. 4. Add whole egg, oil, 1 ½ cups of warm water, and vinegar to mixing bowl with whisk attachment. Add yeast mixture to it. Slowly, add all dry ingredients to same bowl, and beat for about 3 minutes (to allow xanthan gum to work). Add additional water until batter is like thick pudding. 5. Put batter into bowl that had had dry ingredients. Fold egg whites into the batter. Take off challah (about a large Tbl. of dough and burn it. 6. Spray muffin tins with oil and fill with ¼ cup of dough. 7. Turn oven temperature off, and replace racks into oven. 8. Place pans into oven and let rise until double (about 1 hour). Spray tops with oil spray and sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds. Bake at 375 degrees for about 25 minutes or until brown. When cool, remove from pans and cool on cooling rack. Enjoy!

When I started developing recipes and giving cooking classes, this recipe was the first collaboration with my mother. My mum was visiting from Australia and we had a great time coming up with the recipe together. Ever since then, it’s been one of the most frequently requested recipes from my catering clients. This recipe is pareve, yields 8 servings, and is freezer-friendly.

Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare an ovenproof baking dish large enough to hold all the fillets in one layer. Rinse fish; pat dry. Season with salt and pepper. Place into prepared baking dish; set aside. Prepare the sauce: Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Sauté onions with garlic until soft. Add carrots; sauté for 2 minutes. Add ketchup, brown sugar, cinnamon, water, and pineapple chunks with their liquid. Bring sauce to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 5-10 minutes until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Pour sauce over fish in the baking dish. Bake for 20 minutes, until fish flakes easily when pierced with a fork. Cook’s Tip: Skinless salmon fillets also work well in this recipe. I have also used this sauce and technique with chicken cutlets and with boiled corn beef.
