Dear readers, Teshuvah, returning to our Creator, never gets tiring. Each year, when we get in the mode of Elul and self-reflection, we’re reminded that we can always return and be welcomed with open arms. If we focus and shake off negative baggage, we are freed to do so in the blink of an eye. Teshuvah isn’t just about being forgiven for wrongdoing. Teshuvah is a mindset. Indeed, the Rambam put the laws of teshuvah together with fundamental beliefs and attitudes of a Yid, before he listed all the specific mitzvos. Seemingly, its proper place is after the mitzvos, once someone hadn’t kept them correctly, and not before instructing a person what they are supposed to do! However, the Rambam’s arrangement recognizes that the neshamah’s true existence is being one with Hashem and that no matter what, it can always return to that status. This is a double-edged sword: for the tzaddik knows he needs to be in a constant spirit of return; no matter what was accomplished till now, it still isn’t the same as the oneness the neshamah knew before being born. Kol yamav b’teshuvah is something tzaddikim would say. Indeed, the Chassidic masters teach us that Mashiach will come “to bring tzaddikim to teshuvah”—to that original G-dly bliss the neshamah once knew. The other side is that even before we head out on the path of Torah and mitzvos, we need to know that this is who we are. We will inevitably stumble and even fail, but that’s on the outside. On the inside, our reality contains a yearning to connect to Hashem. This being the case, teshuvah has a strong element of simchah to it, even more than the simchah that accompanies other mitzvos. Teshuvah is an expression of the eternal bond we have with our Creator which nothing can undo. Our job is simply to reveal it. Let’s use this opportunity to “cash in” to the heightened spiritual awareness when “the King is in the field,” in the words of the Baal HaTanya, and to express a fresh side that will surprise even ourselves. This will G-d willing bring about a ksivah v’chasimah tovah for all. Wishing you a wonderful Shabbos and a k’sivah v’chasimah tovah l’shanah tovah u’misukah, Shalom

Dr. Menachem Cooper: A Corona Minute - Where We Stand, How To Go Forward By: Menachem Cooper, MD BaltimoreJewishLife.com/Jeff Cohn

I

was hoping that by now there would be nothing to write about and that life would again be normal. Sadly, this is not so. Our community has done extremely well in limiting the disease and protecting the most vulnerable among us. There have been clusters of Covid, mostly related to weddings and other super spreader events. The number of cases has increased over the past several weeks but is still controlled. We need to move forward

need a breather and need to work. Our best shot at making this all work is to continue the despised but necessary masking and social distancing. Avoiding super spreader events is also advisable. The safe bubble concept is no longer viable- this bubble along with many others have burst

(like the promise of Hydroxychloroquine) along the way. Therefore, we need to choose our social interactions with more deliberation and care and take the requirements of isolation and quarantine seriously. Keeping the cases manageable is the way forward. A shout out is in order for our schools, including teachers and administrators, who have undertaken this herculean task of opening the schools. We all want this, need this is a better term, and we must support them in every way. Wishing everyone good health and safety and a K’siva V’chasima Tova.

NSA’s Anne Neuberger To Talk Cybersecurity At Disrupt 2020 By: Staff Reporter BaltimoreJewishLife.com/Jeff Cohn

N

euberger took the helm at the NSA’s newly created Cybersecurity Directorate a year ago as part of the agency’s renewed effort disrupt foreign adversaries and help Americans to stay secure. She previously served as the NSA’s first chief risk officer. We are thrilled to announce that Anne Neuberger, director of cybersecurity at the National Security Agency, will join us at Disrupt 2020 from September 14-18.

B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M

but with due caution. Besides protecting the high-risk population, which has been one factor in lessening mortality, we also have a high-risk situation where we must protect-our schools. If we let our guard down, relax restrictions, and act as if this whole ordeal is over (it is definitely not), we will likely be confronted with the need (by government order) to shut the schools. This has to be avoided Schools are the linchpin. If they shutdown, all our efforts to open up the economy will be stymied and our collective and individual mental health, which have many people on the ropes, will get a crushing blow. Children need school, and their parents

The headlines are not always kind to the government agencies that work in secret, and the NSA is no exception. Leaks have exposed some of the agency’s most clandestine intelligence gathering operations. But the important role of the spy agency in securing the nation’s cybersecurity defenses can go overlooked. Neuberger took the helm at the NSA’s newly created Cybersecurity Directorate a year ago as part of the agency’s renewed effort disrupt foreign adversaries and help Americans to stay secure. She previously served as the NSA’s first chief risk officer.

As much of the NSA works in secret by collecting intelligence on foreign adversaries and disrupting threats to the U.S. homeland, Neuberger’s division works on the defensive side. It’s there that the NSA has unique insights into some of the biggest threats that the public and private sector faces, and uses that information to help

protect the nation’s most critical infrastructure and systems from disruption. In the past year since the directorate was launched, the NSA called out nation-state hackers, warned of new strains of disruptive malware, and advised on how to patch or mitigate major vulnerabilities. Or, in other words, getting unclassified but actionable information to the network defenders who need it. We’ll hear from Neuberger how the agency is balancing spycraft and intelligence gathering with defensive cybersecurity at Disrupt 2020 on September 14-18.

lthough Gov. Larry Hogan announced the state will move to stage three Friday evening, Baltimore’s mayor said the city is not there yet. Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young reminded citizens the governor has left the final say up to each local jurisdiction as far as when to move between phases of reopening. “We will continue to exercise that authority,” Young said at a news conference Wednesday. More than 14,500 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Baltimore, where 107 are hospitalized as a result, Young said Wednesday. COVID-19, disease caused by the virus, has killed more than 440 Baltimoreans, he said. “While some parts of the state may feel ready to move fully into staiman.com

phase three, that is not the case for Baltimore City,” Young said. “The data for Baltimore looks promising, and we anticipate moving to phase two next week, which would include allowing 50 percent indoor dining capacity,” said Young, who reinstituted restrictions on indoor dining in July after the positivity rate was increasing in certain areas and the number of new cases doubled in a matter of weeks. State health data shows the coronavirus positivity rate in Baltimore was 6.12 percent on Aug. 1, compared with 3.04 percent on Sept. 1. “We do not want to erase the gains we have made over the past month by loosening restrictions now,” Young said. “Now is still not the time to be planning large parties, cookouts, celebrations or religious events.” More information about phase two would be forthcoming, the mayor said.

For second consecutive season, Levin & Gann takes home “JCSL by Shimz Cars” Championship Trophy

O

(Ryback blew the game open early, as he stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a bases clearing double over the head of the left fielder.) On the defensive side of the game, the fielding was perfect with both the infielders and outfielders making all routine (and some not routine) plays that came their way. In short, the Levin & Gann team was a cohesive unit of different personalities that meshed and got better and better as the season progressed.

n Labor Day morning, “Levin & Gann” faced off against “LBSI” in the Financial Championship.

Premier

The game was billed as “one for the ages,” with LBSI coming as the 2020 regular season champs and Levin & Gann looking to repeat as league championship winners (after their impressive win in 2019.) Ultimately, Levin & Gann took the win in commanding fashion, pulling out a 15-2 victory. While it was a team effort from top to bottom, notable games were had by outfielders Alexander Weil and Shalom Ryback, who combined for 8 hits and 7 RBIs.

The only challenge left for Levin & Gann (and captain Yaakov Rappaport)? Can they make it 3 in a row next year.

President Trump Again Targets Baltimore In Tweets: ‘Baltimore Is The WORST IN NATION’ By: Staff Reporter BaltimoreJewishLife.com/Jeff Cohn

P

morning. This time, the tweets focused on a political endorsement for Maryland Republican 7th District candidate Kimberly Klacik, who’s running to unseat Democratic Rep. Kweisi Mfume, who won the seat in a special election in April after the death of Rep. Elijah Cummings. In a thread of three tweets, the

resident Donald Trump again targeted Baltimore in tweets posted Sunday

president said: “Be smart Baltimore! You have been ripped off for years by the Democrats, & gotten nothing but poverty & crime. It will only get worse UNLESS YOU ELECT KIMBERLY KLACIK TO CONGRESS. She brings with her the power & ECONOMIC STRENGTH OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. She works sooo hard.... “....Baltimore will turn around, and I will help. Crime will go way down, money and jobs will pour in. Life will be MUCH better because Kimberly really cares. The Dems have had 100 years and they gave you nothing but heartache. IN NATION, Kimberly will.. “....fix it, and fast. The current recipient has no chance, and won’t even try. As I have often said, Baltimore is last in everything, WHAT THE HELL DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE! Kimberly is fully Endorsed by me, something I do not do lightly. Take advantage of it and MAKE BALTIMORE GREAT!” Mfume released a statement Sunday afternoon, saying: “Donald Trump and my opponent are two of a kind. They love each other, but more importantly they deserve each other. Mr. Trump will soon find out that he can’t tell the people of Baltimore City, Baltimore County or Howard County how to vote, or who to vote for. Instead of Baltimore bashing, how about show-

ing a little leadership in the middle of a pandemic Mr. President ... Now tweet that!” President Trump last tweeted support for Klacik by retweeting her online ad, which went viral. “Kimberly will work with the Trump Administration and we will bring Baltimore back, and fast. Don’t blow it Baltimore, the Democrats have destroyed your city!” Before that, the last time President Trump tweeted about Baltimore was to call the city a “disgusting, rat- and rodent-infested mess.” At the time, Klacik, then a political commentator who appeared on FOX News, had tweeted about trash in west Baltimore, saying: “(Cummings) claims to care about children & their future, however in west Baltimore you will find abandoned homes on every block. Many filled with trash, rodents & homeless looking for shelter. Children live on these streets seen here. This district belongs to @RepCummings. More to come.”

With Rabbi Gavriel Horan, Director of RAJE Maryland

Tell us a little about yourself and how you ended up in Baltimore

What is RAJE? RAJE stands for Russian American Jewish Experience. It was started

How did you get involved with Russian Jews? When I started working in UMBC I kept meeting Russian Jews on campus and was impressed by how intelligent and motivated they were to learn about Judaism. In another generation they will be fully assimilated but now there’s still a chance to engage them in Jewish learning and the greater community. A group of these students eventually begged me to bring RAJE to Maryland so they could have a program that caters to their unique culture and demographic. Although I’m not Russian, my father is a Holocaust survivor from Czechoslovakia who experienced the horrors of anti-Semitism first-hand. I can therefore relate to the Slavic culture, the immigrant experience, and the anti-Semitism that Russian Jews experienced in the

FSU. How has RAJE been received so far in Baltimore? B”H the program caught like wildfire and to date we’ve had over 150 students participate in events, with more than 40 completing the Fellowship program and many attending trips to Israel and Poland. During quarantine our attendance went through the roof with dozens of students logging in to Zoom classes several times daily! We have also gotten great support from the frum community and have done Shabbatons in Suburban Orthodox, Mercaz Torah U’Tefillah, and other shuls and are working closely with several other Jewish organizations including Achim (R’ Diskind), Ariel (R’ Belinsky), and the CJE, as well as Hillel, Meor, Chabad and NCSY branches throughout the state. Before Coronavirus hit, we were working on expanding to College Park to cater to the large numbers of Russian Jews in UMD, Montgomery County, and the D.C. area. We also have an amazing all-star team. Rabbi Josh and Tamar Livingstone, who started RAJE in Chicago several years, joined us shortly after we started. Additionally, we have a great board consisting of Aryeh Gross, Dov Ocken, and Dr. Eli Miller. We couldn’t have gotten this far without their help! Are you involved in anything besides RAJE? In addition to running RAJE, I’m also a licensed clinical social worker and see

some clients on the side. My wife Rachel and I also do grant writing for Jewish organizations. This past year we helped raise over $1 Million for security and Coronavirus support for many local shuls, yeshivas, and community organizations. How can people get involved with the great work you’re doing at RAJE? We are always looking for mentors and Shabbos hosts for our students. Additionally, we are running our very first matching fundraising campaign right after Rosh Hashana to enable us to continue running programs and trips. All donations will be tripled for 48 hours and we plan to raise $120k. We hope the community will come out to make calls and of course, contribute nicely. Is there anything else you would like to add? I once heard that Rav Pam zt”l said that it’s particularly important to support Russian kiruv because of the tremendous suffering that Jews went through under Communism. “We are frum today, because of their mesiras nefesh,” he said. We are simply returning the favor. RAJE Maryland cannot continue without support from the community. Please donate to our matching campaign Sept 2223 at www.rajemaryland.com. Feel free to reach out to rajemaryland@ gmail.com to get involved in any way.

I grew up in Manhattan and settled in Ramat Beit Shemesh after getting married. After finishing smicha, I started a career as a freelance writer for the Mishpacha and Hamodia magazines, and also did PR and grant writing for many Jewish organizations. In many ways I was living the dream - learning half a day, working parttime, and teaching in an American yeshiva at night but I felt like I could do more for klal Yisrael. Eight years ago, I was offered a job working for Aish on college campuses in New York and my wife and I (temporarily) said goodbye to the Holy Land to do Jewish outreach. In 2016 we moved to Baltimore to run a program in UMBC and I started RAJE last Spring.

in Brooklyn 15 years ago and has since spread to Chicago, Toronto, Philadelphia and all over the NY/NJ area. RAJE runs semester-long learning fellowships for first- and second-generation Russian Jews, ages 18-33, and takes them on educational trips to Israel, Poland and other destinations in Europe. RAJE collectively engages thousands of Jews each year and has the highest track record of any kiruv organization in terms of Jews marrying Jews. 94% of married RAJE alumni chose to marry a Jewish spouse - 52% of whom reported having met their spouse at RAJE. In just one year in Maryland we already have two serious couples on the road to getting engaged!

Israel and Kosovo Normalize Relations

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Israel and Kosovo will establish full diplomatic relations. As part of the deal, Israel will recognize the Muslim-majority nation for the first time, and both countries will inaugurate embassies in each other’s

capitals. The agreement followed two days of intensive talks between the U.S., Kosovo, and Israel. The Trump administration granted Kosovo a slew of benefits in exchange for recognizing the Jewish State, including promising to invest in the eastern European country and fund a job creation program. Prior to the announcement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with Trump and Kosovo Prime Minister Abdullah Hoti. “Kosovo will be the first Muslim-majority nation to open an embassy in Jerusalem,” exulted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “As I said in recent days, the circle of peace is expanding and more nations are expected to join.” Hoti welcomed Netanyahu’s announcement, saying that he was happy to launch a new relationship with Israel on behalf of his country. “Kosovo will keep its promise to place its mission in Jerusalem,” he said. “I welcome the announcement by the Israeli Prime Minister regarding the recognition of our country.”

The move is to establish diplomatic ties with Kosovo represents a fundamental shift for Israel, which has long refused to recognize the country over fears that it would provide legitimacy for other nations to support a Palestinian state. In addition, Israel kept Kosovo at arm’s length distance in an effort to avoid antagonizing Russia, which opposes recognizing the war-torn country. Over 100 countries have recognized Kosovo’s existence since it declared independence from Serbia followed a decade-long civil war. Its independence has not been ratified by the United Nations due to the veto power Russia enjoys on the Security Council. The European Union has been trying to mediate between Serbia and Kosovo for years and has put normalization between both adversaries as a condition for joining the EU. In recent months, however, the Trump administration has launched an all-out effort to hammer out an agreement between the two foes and bring the decades of conflict to a peaceful resolution.

A Nightly Curfew

After an extensive debate, Israel’s government approved a plan to implement a nightly curfew on 40-coronavirus ridden cities. The curfew will take effect at 7 p.m. every evening and remains in place until 5 a.m. the following morning. Residents are forbidden from being more than 100 meters from their homes, and public transportation will end at 8 p.m. In addition, non-essential businesses will be prohibited from operating, and schools will be closed. In order to enforce the curfew, police officers will be reinforced by IDF combat soldiers. The decision to have a nightly cur-

few comes as an alternative to Professor Roni Gamzu’s plan to impose a full lockdown on 40 cities in the Holy Land. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had scuttled implementing the agreed-upon lockdown at the last minute after pressure from the haredi parties. With the majority of the 40 cities dominated by haredim, including Karmiel, Beitar Illit, and Bnei Brak, the Shas and UTJ factions demanded that Netanyahu not single out their constituents. In a public letter on Sunday, four haredi mayors accusing Netanyahu of “trampling” their cities and “turning us into disease vectors and enemies of the people.” Facing rising anger from haredi leaders, Netanyahu caved on Sunday and adopted nightly closures instead of the recommended full lockdown. In a statement, Netanyahu tried to pacify the haredi leaders, saying that the coronavirus “doesn’t differentiate between nations and populations.” He added the decision regarding which cities to add to the red list “isn’t done to harass and isn’t random — these are scientific results according to the number and rate of infections.” While acknowledging the concerns of the haredi community, Netanyahu reiterated that the skyrocketing infection rate left him with no choice other than to impose new restrictions. “Right now, the outbreaks are mainly in ultra-Orthodox and Arab communities,” Netanyahu noted. “We must take steps that prevent infections at events and weddings and in schools,” he added. “We will do what’s needed in a

Record Temps Scorch Israel A massive heat wave scorched Israel on Friday, with record-setting temperatures and electricity use keeping large swaths of the country indoors. Israel had been hit by extreme temperatures throughout all of last week, with unusually hot weather reported even in normally cool areas such as the Golan Heights. Yet the unprecedented heat shattered several records on Friday, with several cities recording the hottest temperatures in Israel’s history. In Jerusalem, temperatures reached a sizzling 109°F, the highest recorded figure in the ancient city’s history. The number broke a previous new record set a day earlier of 106.1°F, a high never before recorded in Jerusalem.

Bahrain Grants Israel Use of its Airspace The previous record was 104°F that was recorded by Ottoman Empire officials back in 1902. A heatwave is rare for Jerusalem, which commonly enjoys cooler temperatures than the rest of the country due to it being lo-

cated on a mountain range 2,600 feet above sea level. A new record was also set in Eilat, with the southern vacation city reporting a scorching 120°F on Friday. New records were also set in Beit Dagan, a small farming village near Tel Aviv, and in the northern city of Safed, with both recording temperatures as high as 103°F. As temperatures continued to soar, Israel’s Electrical Corporation announced that the country used 14,310 megawatts on Monday, the highest daily electricity consumption in Israel’s history. The previous high had been set the day before with 14,089 megawatts used. According to Magen David Adom, paramedics provided medical treatment to 229 people who suffered from heatstroke. A total of 86 people fainted and 28 suffered from dehydration, including a 57-year-old woman who was evacuated by helicopter after collapsing on a hike near Tiberias.

The Gulf state of Bahrain announced on Thursday that it has approved a request by the United Arab Emirates to allow Israel-bound flight to traverse its airspace. “All flights to and from the UAE can use Bahrain airspace,” confirmed Bahrain’s state news agency. Flights to and from Israel had been banned from using the Kingdom’s airspace as part of its historical refusal to recognize Israel’s existence. The UAE, though, had asked its neighbor to grant Israeli planes overfly rights following the UAE’s decision in early July to normalize

relations with the Jewish State. According to reports, Bahrain’s decision came following extensive lobbying by Trump administration officials. A senior advisor to Trump’s special envoy Jared Kushner visited Bahrain’s capital of Manama last week and raised the issue directly in talks with Bahrain’s Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Despite its small size, Bahrain controls much of the airspace belonging to neighboring Qatar. As a result, allowing Israeli-bound jets to cross Bahraini airspace would cut flight time by an estimated 20 minutes, resulting in cheaper flight prices. The approval came two days after Saudi Arabia announced it that would allow Israeli jets to overfly the Kingdom for the first time. Riyadh’s acquiescence came shortly after an El Al jet carrying an Israeli and U.S. delegation to the UAE became the first-ever Israeli flight to cross Saudi airspace. The charter flight brought senior officials from both Israel and the U.S. to Abu Dhabi to continue normalization talks. The Israeli team was led by National Security Advisor Meir Ben Shabbat while the U.S. delegation was led by Jared Kushner and National Security Council head Robert O’Brien. Arab states have long refused to grant Israeli planes use of their airspace, forcing planes taking off from Ben Gurion Airport to take a costly detour on the way to Asia. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Saudi Arabia’s approval “a huge breakthrough” that would boost Israel’s tourism industry by reducing plane tickets. “These are the fruits of peace,” Netanyahu declared.

Saudi King: Palestinian Pre-req for peace Saudi Arabia’s King Salman told President Donald Trump that peace with Israel is impossible without the establishment of a Palestinian state. In a phone conversation between

According to Saudi Arabia’s official news agency, Salman told Trump of “the Kingdom’s keenness to reach a lasting and just solution to the Palestinian cause to bring peace, which he called “the main starting point for the Kingdom’s efforts and the Arab Peace Initiative. First launched in 2002, the Saudi-led Arab Peace Initiative guarantees full normalization between Israel and 21 Arab states in exchange for a full withdrawal to pre-1967 borders. Trump thanked the king for allowing Israeli commercial aircraft to overfly the kingdom and for supporting the UAE’s decision to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel. “President Trump highlighted the significance of the Abraham Accords and discussed ways to enhance regional security and prosperity, said a White House statement. King Salman’s position is a blow to Trump’s efforts to convince additional Arab nations to normalize their ties with Israel. Since the UAE announced the historic breakthrough in August, the Trump administration has pressured Bahrain, Oman, and Sudan to follow suit. However, Saudi Arabia’s insistence on linking its ties with Israel to solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict likely means that it will not follow the UAE’s lead. Prime Minister Netanyahu had touted the fact that he reached a peace agreement with an Arab nation that did not include concessions to the Palestinians as a major achievement that replaced the “Land for Peace paradigm with “Peace for Peace.

Shin Bet Foils Terror Attack

The Shin Bet internal security agency foiled an attempt by Hamas to set off an explosive device at a busy intersection in Rehovot. Hamas had recruited Mahmoud Maqad, an Israeli citizen from the southern Bedouin village of Segev Shalom. Born to a Gazan father and with his wife living in the dense coastal strip, Maqad attracted the attention of Hamas for his ability to freely enter and leave the Gaza Strip. According to the Shin Bet, Hamas took “advantage of his ability to move between Israel and the Gaza Strip due to his extended family living there, and “this made it easier for Hamas’ military wing to recruit him and hold face-to-face meetings with him in Gaza while at the same time giving them unique and high-quality access to Israeli territory. After agreeing to cooperate with Hamas, Maqad was ordered to gather intelligence on IDF training maneuvers in the area and the location of Iron Dome batteries. He was paid thousands of shekels for his efforts by the terror group. Following months of intelligence gathering, Maqad’s Hamas handlers instructed him to place a powerful explosive device at a central location guaranteed to result in a high death toll. Maqad was trained in assembling and setting off the bomb and chose to detonate it at the Bilu Junction, a crowded intersection in Rehovot. However, Maqad had second thoughts and set fire to the explosive components in order to hide his tracks. He was later arrested by the Shin Bet and confessed following a lengthy interrogation. Maqad and his brother, who assisted him in assembling the bomb, were indicted in the Beersheba Dis-

The Shin Bet said that, besides for helping Mahmoud plan out the attack on the Bilu Junction, “it appears that he was a partner and aided Mahmoud to collect information about the location of Iron Dome system.” Both face charges of attempted murder, belonging to a terror group, belonging to an illegal organization, and contact with a foreign agent. “Thwarting this terror attack and the significant investigation sheds further light on Hamas’ terror infrastructure in the Gaza Strip that had been exposed in early 2020 as part of the arrests of other operatives with Israeli citizenship,” the Shin Bet said. “The Shin Bet will continue to work with its partners in the defense establishment to thwart any terror activity and espionage by terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip.”

Mass Hamas Arrests

involvement in terrorist activities; low-level violence like rock throwing; and taking part in violent protests against Israeli security forces.

Israeli security forces arrested large numbers of suspected Hamas members in predawn raids in the Hebron area on Tuesday, in an apparent show of strength to the terror group amid an uptick in Palestinian violence in recent weeks. Palestinian media reported that upwards of 45 people were arrested in the flashpoint city and surrounding towns, including Bayt Umar, Dura, and Yatta. According to the IDF, 21 people were arrested. Many of those arrested were former security prisoners who had been released from Israeli prisons. An IDF spokesperson said the mass arrests were not tied to a specific Hamas plot but were motivated by the “usual” reasons of suspected

Hamas parliamentarian Nayef Rajoub, who Israeli forces have detained numerous times, accused Israel of “drilling for a major and violent attack” on West Bank Palestinians. “This is merely training for a widespread arrest operation… Israeli soldiers struck down the doors of homes, entered without permission, and gathered detainees in two buses before taking them to a tent built for their detention in the Hebron area,” Rajoub said.

Some of the detainees had been freed as of Tuesday afternoon, while others remained in Israeli custody. The raids came amid an uptick in Palestinian violence emanating from the West Bank in recent weeks, with a deadly stabbing inside Israel by a Palestinian worker, a car-ramming at Tapuah Junction that injured a police officer and a soldier, and several failed attempted attacks, according to Israeli security forces.

Trump: Stars and Stripes to Stay Open

“At the request of Minister Cohen, General Déby responded positively to advancing the establishment of an official representative office of Chad in Jerusalem,” the statement said. Cohen tweeted that he had held an “important meeting” with Déby and the director of Chad’s national security agency. He said that the two sides discussed “cooperation in intelligence, security and economics.” “Tightening relations between Israel and Chad is in the shared interest of the two countries, both in terms of security and economics,” Cohen said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the premier met on Tuesday with Déby and the head of Chad’s intelligence services. The two sides “discussed the appointment of ambassadors and the opening of missions, including the possibility of opening an embassy in Jerusalem,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement. The Chadian delegation also met with National Security Council head Meir Ben-Shabbat and other Israeli officials, the Prime Minister’s Office said. Netanyahu met with the Chadian president in January 2019 on a visit to the capital of N’Djamena, during which the two countries agreed to renew ties, which Chad severed in 1972 due to pressure from Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi. Netanyahu at the time hailed the visit, the first-ever of an Israeli premier to Chad, as “a breakthrough in the heart of the Muslim world.” Some 15 million people live in Chad, 52 percent of them Muslim. About 43% are Christian.

President Donald Trump said that the famed Stars and Stripes military newspaper will not fold following backlash from lawmakers and veterans. “The US government will NOT be cutting funding to @starsandstripes magazine under my watch,” Trump tweeted. First founded during the Civil War by Union troops, the newspaper is widely popular with troops and enjoys complete independence from the official chain command. It is delivered to frontline troops all over the world and often criticizes top military officials. However, the publication had been slated to close this month after the Pentagon yanked its funding in early 2020. Stars and Stripes needs an estimated $15.5 million to continue operations until 2021. A recent Defense Department memo ordered the publication’s management to form a plan that “dissolves the Stars and Stripes” by September 15, including a “specific timeline for vacating government owned/leased space worldwide.” “The last newspaper publication (in all forms) will be September 30, 2020,” wrote Col. Paul Haverstick Jr. in the memo. News that the famed paper would close for good caused an uproar among lawmakers, who appealed Congress for emergency funding to keep Stars and Stripes alive. Fifteen Democratic and Republican senators penned a public letter to Secretary of Defense Mark Esper asking him to reverse the Pentagon’s plans to close the paper for good. In the missive, Republican Sena-

tor Lindsey Graham called the move to close the publication “premature” especially “before the Senate has had the opportunity to voice its support.” “I urge you not to take actions that would deprive individuals of this publication until Congress has appropriately completed the appropriations process,” Graham wrote. “Given the history and the importance of the Stars and Stripes to the members of the Armed Forces, their families, and civilian employees, I believe this request is more than reasonable.”

U.S. Militia Members Tied to Hamas Two members of the far-right Boogaloo Bois movement were arrested for being in contact with Hamas. Michael Robert Solomon, 30, and Benjamin Ryan Teeter, 22, were arrested last Thursday. They face charges for conspiring and attempting to give material support to Hamas. They were denied bail and were brought before a judge on September 9. The two belonged to the Boogaloo Bois, a far-right militia that seeks to overthrow the U.S. government. According to the Department of Justice, their hatred for the federal government led them to contact what they thought was a Hamas agent and offer to work as mercenaries for the group. However, the supposed Hamas member was, in fact, an undercover FBI agent, who led them into a sting operation that ended in their arrest. Allegedly, the two extremists assumed that they could form a relationship with the terror group due to their mutual antipathy toward the United States. “This case can only be understood as a disturbing example of the old adage, ‘The enemy of your enemy is your friend,’” Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers for the National Security Division said. “As alleged in the complaint, these defendants sought to use violence against the police, other government officials and government property as part of their desire to overthrow the government.” “Michael Solomon and Benja-

min Teeter proclaim themselves to be members of the Boogaloo Bois, a group that espouses a violent ideology and an objective to overthrow the government. The defendants believed their anti-U.S. government views aligned with those of Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization, and actively developed plans to carry out violence in Minnesota and elsewhere,” added U.S. Attorney Erica H. MacDonald. The Boogaloo Bois is a fast-growing extremist militia that is active primarily in the northwestern United States. Members commonly appear at rallies heavily armed and dressed in paramilitary gear while sporting their trademark flowery Hawaiian shirts. While beliefs vary among members, the movement seeks to overthrow the U.S. government in a second civil war they call “Boogaloo.”

First Israeli to Reach MLB

Dean Kremer made history when he took the mound on Sunday, becoming the first ever Israeli citizen to play for a Major League Baseball (MLB) team. During his debut on Sunday for the Baltimore Orioles, Kremer struck out seven batters throughout six innings of one-hit, one-run ball, powering his team to a 5-1 victory over the New York Yankees. After the game, Kremer called his strong debut “a dream come true” and chalked his success up to his focus on “staying aggressive and not try to tinker around the zone, but just attack hitters.” Kremer, 24, was born to Israeli parents in California and grew up speaking Hebrew at home. The lefthander has often spoken of his Israeli heritage and pitched for Israel in the 2017 World Baseball Classic and the

Growing up, we would have Shabbat dinner as often as possible,” Kremer said during an interview in 2016. “I never attended Hebrew school formally, but since my parents are Israeli, I have been speaking Hebrew my entire life.”

Seizures of Meth from Mexico Skyrocket

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers say that illegal shipments of methamphetamine have skyrocketed ever since the initial coronavirus outbreak in January. Prior to the pandemic, drug cartels focused on hiding their illicit product in legal cargo that traversed America’s southern border. But with the U.S.-Mexico border closed, Mexican drug traffickers have turned to smuggling methamphetamine via other means. As a result, seizures of meth have spiked over the past few months as the lack of border traffic makes it harder for criminals to move their product without detection. The total volume

of meth seized by authorities in 2020 has already doubled from the previous year with four months still remaining in the fiscal year. According to the CBP, officers have seized 118,153 pounds of meth this year compared to 68,585 pounds in 2019. “Our traffic is down by approximately 20-24%, whether you’re looking at pedestrians or passenger vehicles, but our narcotic seizures are up about 40%,” said Tucson field office Director of Field Operations Guadalupe Ramirez Jr. “Now you see deeper concealments, smaller quantities, harder to find, and you see more people walking across with the narcotics strapped to them,” continued Ramirez. “We’ve seen a huge increase in the internal carriers through our ports of entry.” Drug trafficking is also surging in the Texas border town of Laredo. In August, CPB officers impounded a meth shipment with an estimated street value of $29.8 million. A week later, authorities seized another shipment at the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge worth over $3.3 million. “We’re actually the smallest field office but we’re normally number two or three when it comes to narcotics seizures,” Ramirez said. “Where other locations have seen meth really go up, we’ve seen fentanyl go up here, but we’re still, out of the four southwest border field offices, we’re still number three in meth seizures. So, they’re still very high.”

Dramatic Rescue

Frantically working to rescue those trapped in remote locations of the Sierra Nevada by the Creek fire, helicopter crews struggled to bring them to safety amidst acrid smoke and yawning flames.

The blaze exploded to more than 100,000 acres over the Labor Day weekend, moving too fast to prevent easy escape for people enjoying the holiday at many recreation areas. U.S. Forest Service Supervisor Dean Gould said on Monday night that the Creek fire was an “unprecedented disaster,” adding it was “in a class by itself.” On Monday night, the Fresno Fire Department said rescuers tried to get to people at Lake Edison and China Peak, but “rescue efforts were unsuccessful [as] military pilots tried valiantly to land, but heavy smoke conditions prevented a safe approach.” Pilots were able to complete some rescue missions early Tuesday, though. One person – a teenager who was on a fishing trip with his family near Huntington Lake – told KFSNTV that he and others had been trapped for 14 hours before being hoisted from China Peak Mountain Resort. On Saturday night, more than 200 campers trapped by flames at Mammoth Pool Reservoir were rescued by two California National Guard helicopters. Officials described the chopper runs as unprecedented in size and scope for a fire rescue. “I spoke with the crew members afterward and they said it was one of the greatest missions they’ve ever done just because of the feeling of relief the individuals who were rescued had,” said Col. Dave Hall, commander of the Guard’s 40th Combat Aviation Brigade. “They were literally giving the crew chiefs hugs as they were boarding the helicopter. The fire is burning so dangerously and intensely that crews that normally count destroyed houses and buildings have been told to stand down for their own safety. The small town of Big Creek was hit hard, with many homes lost. Fueled by millions of dead trees, the Creek fire has raced through mountain communities like Big Creek and vacation getaways like Huntington Lake and Shaver Lake. Its smoke plume reached nearly 50,000 feet into the air, causing lightning strikes. A lengthy drought weakened many trees, making them susceptible to fatal attacks by beetles. The insects have killed as many as 33 million trees, and

in the fire area, up to 90% of the trees are dead, according to officials. “These trees, being so dry and brittle, tend to explode when they catch on fire,” U.S. Forest Service spokesman Alex Olow said.

Novak Djokovic Disqualified Tennis great Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the U.S. Open after accidentally hitting a lineswoman with a ball. Djokovic, currently ranked the world’s No. 1 and a favorite to win the tournament, smacked a ball in frustration after losing a point in the previous set. The line drive hit the lineswoman in the chest, resulting in Djokovic’s removal.

According to the rules, anyone hitting anyone else on the court, including linesmen and opposing players, are disqualified from the match. Djokovic tried to reason with the judge prior to getting suspended, pointing that the official was not seriously hurt. “She doesn’t have to go to the hospital for this,” argued Djokovic. “You’re going to choose a default in this situation? My career, grand slam, center stage.” Djokovic later apologized for his actions, writing on Instagram that he was “extremely sorry to have caused her such stress.” The 17-time grand slam winner has a history of outbursts on the court, including using profanity and smashing his racket in anger. Earlier in the match, Djokovic had smashed a line drive in anger that hit a scoreboard, leading the broadcasters to speculate that he could be disqualified if he kept it up.

White Professor Pretended to be Black

A white professor admitted that she pretended to be an African American throughout her entire career. Jessica Krug, an academic who teaches African and Latin American studies at George Washington University, had published extensively about her black heritage. But in a Medium blog post last week, Krug admitted to fabricating her identity and hiding the fact that she was white for career advancement. “To an escalating degree over my adult life, I have eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then U.S. rooted Blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness,” Krug wrote. Krug apologized for coopting the identities of others, admitting that her actions were “the very epitome of violence, of thievery and appropriation, of the myriad ways in which non-Black people continue to use and abuse Black identities and cultures. “I have built my life on a violent anti-Black lie, and I have lied in every breath I have taken,” she added. “There are no words in any language to express the depth of my remorse, but then again: there shouldn’t be. Words are never the point.” Following her shock confession, Krug was put on leave while George Washinton University officials reviewed her employment status. The

university acknowledged in a statement that “many students, faculty, staff and alumni are hurting” from Krug’s decades of deception regarding to her heritage. George Washington University’s Department of History also released a statement demanding that their colleague be fired for her actions despite her tenure. “She has betrayed the trust of countless current and former students, fellow scholars of Africana Studies, colleagues in our department and throughout the historical discipline, as well as community activists in New York City and beyond,” the statement said. Krug’s case is similar to the saga of Rachel Dolezal, a white civil rights activist who spent years pretending to be an African American until she was unmasked in 2015. Dolezal, who headed Spokane’s NAACP branch, was forced to resign in disgrace after being exposed by her own parents.

Lou Brock Dies

Lou Brock, a hall of famer and all-time National League stolen bases leader, passed away on Monday at the age of 81. Born in Arkansas, Brock broke into the league with the Chicago Cubs in 1961 and struggled to find his footing. His career took off after he was traded to the Cardinals in 1964, helping the franchise win three pennants and dominate the National League. Brock was a perennial all-star and 19-year veteran known for his base stealing prowess. Throughout his career playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, Brock swiped 938 bases, which remains an all-time National League record. Upon retiring in 1979, Brock also

The Week In News held the single season record in stolen bases, which has since been broken by Rickey Henderson, and recorded 3,023 hits. Brock was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1985 on his very first attempt. Brock’s St. Louis Cardinals honored him with a moment of silence prior to Monday’s game, remembering the outfielder as a tough athlete who did everything he could to win. “Lou Brock was one of the most revered members of the St. Louis Cardinals organization and one of the very best to ever wear the Birds on the Bat,” said Cardinals’ CEO William DeWitt Jr. “He was an ambassador of the game around the country and a fan favorite who connected with millions of baseball fans across multiple generations. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.”

Bug Bomb

Flies can be dangerous. That’s what one French man found out when his home blew up after he chased a fly with a flyswatter. The octogenarian was about to eat dinner when he spotted the insect in his home. He picked up his electric flyswatter and began to chase the buzzing bug, swatting at it as he attempted to kill it. But the man was unaware that a gas canister was leaking in his home. The electricity from the swatter reacted with the leaking gas and caused an explosion, destroying his kitchen and damaging his roof. Thankfully, the man was able to escape the residence with

light burns on his hand. He is living at a local campsite until his home is repaired. Talk about a total buzzkill.

Alpaca Prize

A rare black alpaca born in Scotland could be worth thousands of dollars because of its prized fur. Alpacas are valued for their lush fur, with the rarest being white and black. Although they are native to South America, they have been in the United Kingdom since the 1980s – there are approximately 14,000 of them in the country. The miniature mammal was named Tia. Her parents are Lola and Jack. The furry family lives at Auchingarrich Wildlife Park in Perthshire, Scotland. Maxine Scott, who owns the park, said, “Tia was born on August 31 with a nice straightforward delivery or unpacking, it’s called in the alpaca world. The cria [calf] is only taking milk just now although will start nibbling grass over the next few weeks.” Sounds like a pack of joy.

Bubble Gum Box

Suttie Economy loves gum. In fact, the 94-year-old loves Juicy Fruit gum so much, he has handed out sticks of the chewy confection to people in his

community for decades. Now, the nonagenarian is not feeling too well. He has asked his friend, Sammy Oakey, owner of Oakey’s Funeral Service and Crematory, to paint his casket like his favorite pack of gum. “For decades, Suttie has been known as the guy who takes packs of Juicy Fruit to restaurants, doctors’ offices, funeral homes, firehouses, etcetera, and gives them out to everyone he sees,” Oakey said. “He has probably purchased tens of thousands of packs of the gum over the years.” Certainly, this is an odd request. Initially, Mars Wrigley, the manufacturer of the gum, denied permission to use their trademark on the casket. But the company eventually relented after the request was posted social media. “We appreciate the role our products have played in creating better moments and more smiles for this individual and the Roanoke community,” a company spokesperson said. The casket will either be painted to look like a pack of Juicy Fruit or a sheet with the logo will be laid over the casket. For now, Economy is still here, and he keeps moving – just like his favorite chewing gum.

Taking a Walk on the Wild Side Recently, passengers on an airplane in Ukraine were shocked when they saw something moving on the wing of the plane. A woman in a white top and pants apparently became too hot while sitting on the plane on the tarmac and decided to take a walk on the wing of the plane.

Stunned onlookers at Boryspil International Airport in Kiev watched her sit on the wing and walk around before

being summoned back on board by the airplane’s crew. The unidentified passenger, who was traveling on a Ukraine International Airlines flight from Antalya, Turkey, to the Ukranian capital with her husband and children, was reportedly overheard saying she was “too hot” and needed to cool down. Her unauthorized walk on the wing of the Boeing 737 has her banned from all future UIA flights. Puts the term “winging it” into a different perspective.

The Ice Man

Josef Koeberl is a cool guy. The Austrian daredevil took on a Guinness World Record by submerging himself up to the shoulders in ice for 2 hours, 30 minutes, 53 seconds. The 43-year-old climbed into the ice tank in the main square of the town of Melk, Austria, wearing only a pair of swimming trunks. His freezing feat paid off. Koeberl beat the record set by Chinese man Songhai Jin, who spent 1 hour, 53 minutes, 10 seconds in ice. This is not the first time Koeberl stood in ice for hours. He previously managed the freezing temps for 2 hours and 8 minutes when he was submerged in ice in Vienna in 2014, but the stunt was not certified as a world record. “My motivation was to go beyond my own limits and point out climate change at the same time. As I train a lot in high alpine terrain, I want to raise awareness on the melting of the glaciers,” Koeberl said. Koeberl is not taking this feat idly. He plans an attempt to beat his own record next year by remaining in the ice for three hours. What a cool guy.

hen I established My Israel Home over a decade ago, I thought that my company would focus exclusively on selling existing homes and not new projects under construction. The thinking was simple: there is less guesswork buying an existing property and there is usually a much shorter waiting period to gain possession of the home. However, thankfully the Israeli population is growing and there is simply not enough existing housing to satiate tremendous buyer demand. Consequently, over the years, we have sold hundreds of homes “on paper” – also known as “off plan” – in new projects under construction, and these sales now account for about half of our sales brokerage activity. Buying on paper presents purchasers the opportunity to (1) design the unit to their particular needs and tastes; (2) receive amenities not found in older buildings, such as parking, elevators, and storage rooms; (3) acquire an earthquake-resistant home (older homes were built to lower construction standards); (4) get up to a seven-year warranty; and (5) often purchase at a significant discount. Years ago, the concept of buying on paper was fraught with challenges, as some developers did not adhere to contractual obligations and buyers in those projects would wait an inordinate period of time to receive their

homes. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the 2007 bankruptcy of Heftzibah Construction Company. One of the nation’s largest developers, Heftzibah had been involved in some unlawful business activities, and its collapse tragically left many families financially devastated. In response to this incident, the government instituted a number of reforms to protect buyers. We will focus on one partic-

which is the most prevalent option. The developer pays a financial institution to give buyers a bank guarantee, which protects every shekel that buyers pay for their apartment (with the exception of the VAT portion of the price, which is secured by the government). Generally, if the developer becomes insolvent, then the buyer can exercise the guarantee and receive his/her money back – includ-

If one chooses a project and developer wisely, buying on paper can be an excellent home-purchasing opportunity.

ular issue, bank guarantees, which had been in place prior to Heftziba but was more stringently monitored after that debacle. If a developer wants to sell apartments under construction, the general law is that they cannot sell any unit until the project is completed and registered in the land registry (known as “TABU”) – unless the buyer’s money is protected. There are three ways in which the builder can protect the purchaser’s funds but for this article we will focus on the bank guarantee,

ing any construction index linkage payments made by the buyer. The system works: in a recent situation where the builder declared bankruptcy, the bank hired another builder to complete the project at the same technical specifications that were attached to the contract, and the bank covered all additional costs that were required to complete the project. Obviously, the bank does not want the builder to become insolvent and therefore employs several practices to safeguard the project’s financial

health: (1) The developer cannot sign a contract of sale unless the bank approves the purchase price; (2) all of the buyer’s payments are deposited directly to a bank account controlled by the bank giving the guarantee – no money may ever be given directly to the builder – and the bank pays the builder only after the builder has submitted bills and the bank’s engineer has confirmed that the work was properly completed; (3) the developer is unable to receive profits until the project is completed; (4) the financial institution retains a portion of the funds for the duration of the seven-year warranty period to cover any warranty-related problems, should the developer fail to properly remedy the issue. The silver lining to the unfortunate Heftzibah collapse is that, due to subsequently implemented legislation, buyers have greater protection than ever. If one chooses a project and developer wisely, buying on paper can be an excellent home-purchasing opportunity.

War of Words in Israel Are “Annex” or “Occupier” Correct Terms? By Scott Feltman

Q

uestions of “annexation” have taken center-stage lately. Since the revealing of President Donald Trump’s peace plan, pundits and politicians have been asking: Should Israel annex “Area C,” aka Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley, as outlined in the Oslo Accord? Before we can answer this question, which evokes mixed feelings worldwide, we must question whether “annex” is the correct word at all. Utilizing precise, accurate language is vital, especially when discussing issues that arouse such strong emotion. Words can have a huge impact and employing erroneous terms can cause great harm, in this case unduly villainizing Israel. We often hear sentences such as: “Israel is an illegal occupier which wants to annex land that belongs to the indigenous Palestinian people.” This statement gives a misleading picture of the true situation, as its wording introduces many fallacies. Firstly, describing this region as “land that belongs to the Palestinians” itself is problematic. In the first century BCE, the Romans conquered this region and coined the term “Syria-Palaestina” as an insult to the Jews — a corruption of “Philistine,” the biblical enemies of the Israelites. The Philistines died out more than 2,000 years ago and have zero connection to today’s Palestinian Arabs. The average person believes the Palestinians to be the indigenous people living in Israel. However, until 1948, the land and all people living here — both Jews and Arabs — were called Palestinians. To wit, the Palestine Symphony Orchestra began in

1936 and later became the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Today’s “Palestinians” are a mixture of various Arab clans, some of whom have been in this area for centuries but many of whom originally came from Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and elsewhere. Not until 1964 did they adopt the nomenclature “Palestinian.” The Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) was founded by the Arab League at a 1964 summit in Egypt; its first leader was Lebanese-born Ahmad Shuqayrī, and Yasser Arafat, who famously led the organization from 1967 until his death in

2014, but there are many other examples today. This term does not apply to Israel and has absolutely no basis in international law. Israel was formed in 1948 as a homeland for the Jewish people, whose claim to the land is significantly stronger than any other entity. In the Bible, the areas of Judea and Samaria are the cradle of Jewish civilization. Our patriarchs and matriarchs lived and were ultimately buried there; Kings David and Solomon lived there; both Temples were built there; the Maccabees fought and defeated an oppressive regime there.

One cannot annex land that was stolen from himself; one can only reclaim it.

2004, was Egyptian. This is not to deny that today’s Palestinians have a shared culture nor is it to deny that many Arabs have lived in this land for centuries. But so have Jews. The idea that the “Palestinian” people are the indigenous people who have existed for thousands of years on the land that is now Israel is historically and factually incorrect. Next, we must examine “occupier.” According to the internationally recognized definition, an occupier is a nation that forcibly takes territory from another sovereign nation. The most recent example of an actual illegal occupation is Russia’s forceful takeover of Crimea from Ukraine in

This land is the home of our ancestors, us and our children. Historically, following their World War I defeat, the Ottoman Turks’ kingdom was divided amongst the Allied powers. By order of the League of Nations, the United Kingdom assumed sovereignty of Palestine. Then, the San Remo Resolution of 1920 transitioned the famous Balfour Declaration of 1917 from a simple expression of British policy expressing a willingness to create a homeland for the Jewish People in all of Israel into a binding act of international law that required actual execution by Britain. Technically, the only period this area was “illegally occupied” was from

1948 to 1967, when Jordan illegally captured the land in Israel’s War for Independence. Now let’s turn to the word that seems to inevitably follow Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s name in the news: “annexation.” The ancient Israelites were pushed out of their homeland originally by the Babylonians but then returned. Jews living in the land of Israel have lived under the thumb of the Persians, Romans, Syrian-Greeks, Mamelukes, Byzantine Christians, Crusaders, Muslims, Ottoman Turks and, most recently, the British. But through it all, Israel remained our home. One cannot annex land that was stolen from himself; one can only reclaim it. According to international law, these areas were legally given as a homeland for the Jewish People. As such, Israel is not looking to “annex” these regions; it is merely looking to reinstitute its legal rights of sovereignty and apply its civilian law, for the betterment of all people living here. Simply because people reiterate incorrect terminology again and again does not make it valid. A lie is a lie no matter how often it is repeated, and it’s vitally important we utilize terminology correctly. This article first appeared in Newsmax. Scott M. Feltman is the executive vice president of One Israel Fund, an American philanthropy that provides security and humanitarian aid for those living in Judea, Samaria, the Jordan Valley and the communities impacted by the Israeli disengagement from Gaza in 2005.

Saving A Life at My Own Son’s Wedding By Dr. David Kupferberg

ast Tuesday night, I was dancing at my son’s beautiful wedding. We held the festivities outdoors at the Gush Etzion winery to comply with the Covid-19 coronavirus restrictions that are currently in place in Israel. The guest list was limited to very close friends and family. As I am not only a pulmonary and critical care physician but also a first responder for United Hatzalah, I had my medical kit with me in the trunk of my car as is my usual practice.

I was overjoyed to see my son and his new bride so happy under the chuppah even amid the pandemic that is currently raging all around us after many changed wedding plans and evolving regulations. Their joy was infectious and shared by all who attended. After the ceremony, amid the celebrations, I was in the middle of the dancing with the groom when all of a sudden the mother of the bride came and pulled me from the danc-

ing circle. The first thought that went through my head was, “Had I missed a round of picture taking? Was it time for the family dance?” As she pulled me across the floor she shouted (so that I could hear her over the music) that a young woman was ill and needed help. I rushed over and saw the young woman was clearly suffering from a very severe allergic reaction. She was still able to talk, and I asked her if she knew whether or not she had any severe allergies. She said she had suffered from this before and is allergic to fish and erythromycin (neither of which were served at the wedding!). I immedi-

ately sent someone to grab my United Hatzalah medical bag from the car. As I held the woman, she told me that she was having difficulty breathing and felt like she was about to pass out, which she then promptly did in my arms. I caught her and laid her down. The person had returned with my bag, and I immediately pulled out a syringe and administered some epinephrine. My brother, Jeff Kupferberg, who is also a volunteer first responder and was wearing his Corona PPE hazmat suit to the wedding for some schtick (having some Covid-era fun), quickly joined me, and while he was still wearing his suit, together we stabilized the girl’s condition. I called dispatch and asked that an ambulance

they had a stable patient to transport to the hospital. After she was on her way, my brother and I went back to dancing, thankful that we were able to help. Helping to save a life at my son’s wedding was surreal and beautiful. I am grateful that as first responders we take our medical kits with us wherever we go, and for just this reason. One never knows when or where they will be needed. As a physician, my first response bag includes a variety of medications that I am allowed to administer in the field. This is precisely what United Hatzalah is meant to do: have first responders go about their daily lives and, when called upon, be ready to act to save lives.

Many people undergo genetic testing at some point in their lives -- but miss the test for Gaucher disease. This is because, although common, Gaucher Disease isn’t life threatening and is not included in all Jewish genetic testing panels. Symptoms of Gaucher disease include bone and joint pain, easy bruising, enlarged liver and/or spleen and nose bleeds. Once diagnosed, Gaucher disease can be treated with medication.

Torah Thought

Abba, We Came! By Rabbi Zvi Teichman

After the nation heard the ninety-eight curses in the Admonition, Moshe senses their fear of a hopeless future. He confronts them with encouragement reminding them — “You are standing today... before Hashem, your G-d”. Despite your failings and sins in the desert, G-d has not forsaken you, Moshe reminds them, so too shall He maintain you in the future.

We first declare how we loathed Your forthright and honest paths; we clung to abominations and despicable deeds. In the second selichah we go on to admit there is no one who calls to You in righteousness; the good man today is compared to a thornbush. Lastly, in the third selichah we bemoan that we have spoiled straight paths and perverted Torah, and therefore we avert our faces to the ground.

It is in this spirit that on Motzei Shabbos, barely a week before Rosh Hashana, we begin to recite ‫סליחות‬/ Selichos, in the hope that despite a year of having not lived up to our reputations and commitments, G-d will nevertheless sustain us with forgiveness.

So how are we to gain G-d’s forgiveness? Is it merely enough to abashedly admit our deficiencies to capture His favor?

The root of this text called Selichos, is — ‫ — סלח‬forgive, since within these selections are petitions to Hashem for His pardon.

In the last selichah we recite — the piyut we do responsively — a sudden and startling transformation takes place.

It has been observed that the numerical value of ‫סלח‬, equals 98, indicating that within these supplications lay the ability to ward off the terrible curses.

Standing with confidence we joyously express before G-d:

What is the secret to these powerful prayers? Where does our hope for forgiveness lay? A cursory glance at the selichos does not seem to forebode much encouragement. The very first words we utter in our introductory appeal is: ‫לך ד' הצדקה‬ ‫ולנו בשת הפנים‬, Yours, my Lord, is the righteousness and ours is the shamefacedness. We start off admitting we have nothing to show for ourselves, just to put our heads down in shame. The series of selichos that follow only create an even bleaker outlook.

As the day of rest departs — ‫קדמ־‬ ‫ — נוך תחילה‬we come before You first of all; bend Your ear from on high, O You Who sits to hear Israel praise Him, O that You listen to our song and our prayers. )‫סליחות‬-‫(במוצאי מנוחה‬ How did we so quickly shed our burden of shame and guilt and now request, almost with a tinge of entitlement, for G-d to ‘bend His ear’ towards us? This contention, that right after Shabbos has departed, we have, ‫קדמ־‬ ‫ — נוך תחילה‬which literally translates as — preceded Your coming, arriving ‘first’, seems almost childish. After all, we have been so bad and misbehaved, where do we get the audacity to ask of G-d to listen to ‘our song’, our joy, after our own admission of

guilt and worthlessness? Even more striking is our proudly presenting ourselves as having taken the initiative to, as it were, preempt G-d in arriving so early, first. We are facing a day of judgment in merely seven days, where our health, livelihood, children and spouse’s welfare, as well as our very lives are at stake, and we conceitedly state, ‘we beat G-d to the punch’?! Over two decades ago when I was privileged to live in the holy city of Jerusalem, there was a period when I would come home midday, grab a bite and then catch a local mincha. My youngest child, then a young boy of three or four, would often accompany me to mincha, which was a moment of exquisite joy and bonding for the both of us. One day I was in a rush, and my son had been misbehaving, so I decided he would not deserve that special treat that day, and I hurriedly left my house alone. We lived in Har Nof, which is neighborhood built upon a steep mountain. Agassi Street, where we lived, was one of the upper streets, while Rechov Rezhin, the street where the Bostoner Shul I davened in is located, was among the lower ones. The mountainside was dotted with numerous sets of steps, situated between the concrete jungles of apartment complexes that enabled one to descend rather rapidly to the lower regions. I generally drove my car down the mountain which would inevitably take much longer than going down by foot, since one had to follow the circuitous road as it wended across and down the mountainside until one would arrive several streets below.

As I was about to enter the shul I see a little familiar bouncing figure, anxiously running towards me from the distance. Lo and behold, my little boy with a smile from ear to ear affixed upon his cherubic face, blurts out in absolute pride and ecstasy, “Abba, I came to Mincha!” Thoughts of his prior misbehavior evaporated into thin air. My mind raced wildly as I calculated how many streets this little tyke had to cross on his own, one of them, Rechov Shaulson, a major thoroughfare, with buses hurtling down in opposite directions, and the danger that had been involved in his mighty trek. Yet, my heart calmed when I felt the deep love and connection that was overwhelmingly flowing at that precious moment. I lovingly grasped my little boy’s hand, holding it tight, as we proceeded to daven Mincha. We are that ‘little boy’. Despite our mindlessly childish ways and our reckless behavior, we arrive on the night of selichos, overpowered with emotions of affection for our Abba, our Tatty, our Father, and we shout out with joy — “Abba, we came to selichos!” “Listen, Abba, to our song of joy, and our desire to connect to You through prayer.” We scamper down the mountain in a sudden burst of enthusiastic awareness, thrusting ourselves into our Abba’s embrace, proudly exhilarating, “Abba, we came to selichos!” If we truly place ourselves into His open arms, we are hopeful that He will clutch our hands firmly and never let us go!

Parshas NitzavimVayelech By Rabbi Berel Wein

he very two words that signify the titles of the two portions of the Torah that we will hear in shul this Shabbat are, at first glance, contradictory. Nitzavim signifies a solid stance, unwavering presence, and a commanding appearance. It reflects an unchanging nature, and the necessary ability to stand one’s ground no matter what the circumstances of life. On the other hand, the word Vayelech signifies motion, progress, change

and a forward thrust in behavior and concepts. It seems that these two Torah readings cancel each other out, for one signifies unchanging steadfastness while the other champions progress, change and motion. Such an understanding of Torah and Judaism is very superficial and erroneous. Rather, the two traits indicated in the opening words of these two Torah readings essentially complement each other. They do not come to point out

services, study sessions and personal behavior, testify to the adaptability that the Torah and Jewish tradition, dating back to Sinai, has built-in in order to be able to deal with all possible situations, no matter how unforeseen. The only question that remains is how to achieve a proper balance between Nitzavim and Vayelech. can never be modified or adjusted, acceding to the passing social norms and changing human mores. We are witness, in our times, how quickly acceptable human behavior and ideas can rapidly change, so that what was unthinkable and perverse a few short decades ago is today not only acceptable but behavior that should be championed, admired, and, in some cases, even enforced legally against ones wishes. At the same time, Jewish society cannot remain eternally frozen and incapable of adjustment to new situations and differing societal changes. Our recent experience with the coronavirus, with the various halachic responses to it concerning prayer

and is an enormous danger to Jewish survival. On the other hand, we certainly need to recognize that 21st-century Israel or the United States is not the same as 19th century eastern and central Europe. Every individual, as well as every group within Jewish society, must feel its way slowly and carefully to try and find the proper balance that fits them and allows them to retain the blessings of tradition and faithfulness, while still dealing with current problems and situations. Understandably, this process is an ongoing one, and it is one of great delicacy and nuance. Nevertheless, it is part of our drive for eternity and the enhancement of our religious society. Shabbat shalom.

The ICC & Israel CAN THE U.S. AND ISRAEL FIGHT BACK AGAINST THE ICC’S AGENDA? By Shammai Siskind

N SEPTEMBER 10, 2018,

members of the Federalist Society, a conservative thinktank for law and public policy, gathered in the main conference room of the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. The thunderstorms raging outside provided the perfect backdrop for the address they were about to receive from then-National Security Advisor John Bolton. Bolton, well-known as a hardliner since coming to Washington in the 1980s, was about to use the venue to announce a pertinent policy stance of the Trump administration. Almost a year earlier, in November 2017, a prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague had submitted a request to superiors to open an investigation into alleged war crimes committed by the U.S. military in Afghanistan. One of the highlights of this proposed investigation were concerns over alleged abuse of Afghan detainees. Reportedly, there had been several instances in which U.S. interrogators had tortured detainees within Afghanistan as well as

at black sites in Poland, Romania, and Lithuania. While no claims of such incidents were filed by Afghanistan or any other country party to the ICC convention, this did not prevent pre-investigation steps from moving forward. Bolton made clear the United States sees no legitimacy in the ICC’s proceedings. “For all intents and purposes, the ICC is already dead to us,” Bolton told his listeners. He then went into detail stating what retaliatory steps would be taken in the event the Court takes actions against U.S. citizens. “We will ban its judges and prosecutors from entering the United States. We will sanction their funds in the U.S. financial system, and we will prosecute them in the U.S. criminal system.” In addition to slamming the Court’s legitimacy with respect to prosecuting Americans, Bolton made another important point. Not only would the administration view the indictment of U.S. citizens as a form of attack, but going after America’s allies would be seen as equally problematic. “If the court comes after us, Israel, or other U.S. allies, we will not sit quietly. [We] will use any means necessary to protect our citizens and

those of our allies from unjust prosecution by this illegitimate court,” he warned. While Bolton has long fallen from grace within the White House, the message conveyed by the former advisor nearly two years ago firmly remains the administration’s stance. Current officials have left little doubt of that as recent events have unfolded. Since Bolton’s speech, the ICC’s efforts targeting both the United States and Israel have proceeded pretty much in tandem. In March, the Court announced it would be moving forward with a probe into possible war crimes committed by U.S. personnel in Afghanistan. The decision was a reversal from an ICC panel decision in April that blocked the investigation. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo slammed the court for its overreach. “We’re going to take all the appropriate actions to ensure that American citizens are not hauled before this political body to settle political vendettas,” Pompeo said. Weeks later, the Secretary spoke out against The Hague once again in response to the Court’s current deliberations on Israel’s alleged crimes. “A court that attempts to exercise its power outside its jurisdiction is a political tool that makes a mockery of the law and due process.” The Secretary correctly pointed out that Israel, like the United States, is not subject to the ICC authority since neither nation is a signatory to the Rome Statute, the international convention that created the Court. Pompeo then warned, “If the ICC continues down its current course, we will exact consequences.”

A CONTENTIOUS HISTORY A confrontation between the ICC and both Israel and the U.S. was almost inevitable considering the two countries’ history with the Court. The strife between the U.S. and the ICC goes back to the ICC’s founding over twenty years ago when the court received its mandate. When the Rome Statute was drawn up in 1998, it was, at first, appealing to the United States. Who wouldn’t support an international court of justice designed to rid the world of the impunity enjoyed by the

worst war criminals and human rights violators? Bill Clinton signed the United States onto the Statute in December 2000. Shortly afterward, however, policymakers took an about-face. The alarming implications of the Rome Statute quickly became apparent to the majority of the U.S. Congress. The idea that American military officers would be able to be tried and punished by a legal body outside of the United States was too much for even the most globalist members of the Senate and House. In August 2002, just a few months following the government’s formal notice that it would not ratify the Statute, Congress passed the American Service-Members’ Protection Act (ASPA), which contained a number of clauses, including authorization of the President to “use all means necessary and appropriate to bring about the release of any U.S. or allied personnel being detained by, on behalf of, or at the request of the International Criminal Court.” Israel had a similar, although less roundabout, story of rejecting the ICC’s mandate. Israel’s delegation at the Rome Diplomatic Conference saw the provision to adjudicate cases of “transferring populations into occupied territory” as custom tailored to delegitimize the West Bank settlements. Indeed, the delegates wondered why a list of triable crimes that consists of such acts as “genocide” and “crimes against humanity” should include human settlement, even in cases where, for sake of argument, the land is wrongly occupied. Alas, Israel’s critics have for years compared settlements in Judea and Samaria to the worst human rights violations. This fact makes Israel’s hesitancy toward the Statute all the more prophetic. In recent years, the Criminal Court in The Hague has been spurred to investigate Israel in response to several incidents, all of which were extremely low-scale relative to other ongoing global conflicts. These included the 2010 flotilla raid in which the Comoros-flagged Mavi Marmara was boarded by Israeli commandos after trying to run Israel’s blockade of the Hamas-controlled Strip. Several years later, the ICC opened a case on Israel’s 2014 Gaza operation dubbed “Protective Edge” claiming that wonton attacks against civilian populations centers were orchestrated and ordered by high ranking Israeli officers and ministers. Both these and other similar investigations have never led to any actual steps being taken against Israel or Israeli officials. But this time around feels markedly different.

POISED TO STRIKE In early May, the ICC’s chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda submitted a request to a three-member panel of Court judges to seek the go-ahead for another probe into “Israeli war crimes in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.” The submission came after declaring that previous arrangements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority did not prevent the Court from acting, this despite clearly implied stipulations in such agreements – such as the 1993 Oslo Accords – that conflicts

between the parties would remain outside the courtrooms of The Hague. Over the next eight weeks, Israel became increasingly wary that ICC proceedings against Israeli officials would soon be underway. On July 16, Israeli media reported that the government was compiling an internal list of current and former Israeli leaders, both military and political, that could possibly be targets of an ICC case. While the complete roster of names is not known –apparently many, if not most, of the individuals do not even know their names are on it – the list almost certainly includes the likes of former IDF chief of staff Benny Gantz, former defense minister Naftali Bennet, former defense minister and current opposition MK Moshe Ya’alon, current IDF chief Aviv Kohavi, who during the 2014 war headed Is-

71

sive stance. Already in June the administration announced it was placing sanctions on ICC personnel including economic penalties and travel restrictions. Prosecutor Bensouda has already received a shot across the bow last year when the State Department revoked her U.S. visa. Now, true to the policy iterated by John Bolton two years ago, the administration has put full sanctions into place. As the U.S. made clear, the harsh move was also to send a message regarding Israel. Shortly before the penalties were announced, Secretary Pompeo told a podcast hosted by the American Enterprise Institute that he believes The Hague and the world will soon see “that we are determined to prevent having Americans and our friends and allies in Israel and elsewhere hauled in by this corrupt ICC.”

“A court that attempts to exercise its power outside its jurisdiction is a political tool that makes a mockery of the law and due process.” rael’s Military Intelligence, and even Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself. If reports of this secret list are true, it would represent the next step in Israel preparing for an ICC action. According to Hebrew media reports, Israel had already in June appointed a team culled from the National Security Council, the justice and foreign ministries, and the international department of the IDF military prosecution. The job of this group is to coordinate the country’s response to any ICC proceedings, a job which very likely includes preparing an actual defense for a future ICC trial. Israel understands it must be ready for the worst. The consequences of an ICC indictment could be serious indeed. Even though the U.S. and Israel find themselves in a similar position, the battles they are fighting as well as the stakes of those battles are drastically different. The risk to the United States of their personnel actually suffering penalties from ICC prosecution is quite low. For Israel, though, this is not the case. If an IDF officer, for instance, is found guilty of war crimes by the Court, he or she would be at risk of immediate arrest upon stepping foot in a country party to the Rome Statute. Various diplomatic arrangements between countries could make matters even worse, as a nation who is not a signatory to the Statute could be forced to extradite Israelis to a country that is.

THE PUSHBACK Israel, for its part, can do little other than brace for a possible legal bout. The United States, on the other hand, is taking a much more aggres-

While Israel has no direct part in these policy decisions, officials are banking on the effect they may have in getting the ICC to back off. Shortly after they were announced, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his gratitude for the decision. “I would like to thank President Trump and the Secretary of State Pompeo for their decision to sanction the International Court in The Hague,” said the premier to a press conference in early June. Will these steps by the U.S. have any deterring effect? That will likely remain in the realm of speculation. What is known, however, is that Israel recently benefited from a major reprieve, although not quite a victory. A few weeks ago, the ICC adjourned for its summer vacation without delivering a decision on beginning an investigation on Israel. This, despite consistent reports for weeks that such a decision was imminent. Some suggested this was the ICC signaling it was putting a final stop to the Israel case. But Israeli officials are not optimistic. Hebrew media reports that most legal experts in Jerusalem believe the Court will resume work on the case relatively soon.

ON PRINCIPLE In all likelihood, the saga of the ICC’s investigations into Israel and the U.S. will be with us for the foreseeable future. Both Jerusalem and Washington now have the chance to expose the ICC for the biased organization which it has become. With only four successful convictions since 2002 and having completely ignored other nations that actually codify human rights abuses in their laws, it is not only

the Court’s efficacy but its very legitimacy as an organization that should and must be called into question. But perhaps more fundamentally, the ICC’s efforts regarding Israel and America are an obvious breach of the Court’s own mandate. The ICC was founded for a very specific purpose, and that is to solve the problem of impunity. Millions of victims of war crimes have over the years been left without any recourse due to the fact that no local or international body was capable or willing to deliver justice. In other words, the ICC is meant to investigate and prosecute crimes committed in countries that are not addressing the crimes of their own citizens. The cases of the United States and Israel do not meet this central criteria. Both nations have professional, functional legal systems that consistently prosecute both military and civil crimes. As Pompeo stated when announcing U.S. sanctions on the ICC: “When our own people do wrong, we lawfully punish those individuals, as rare as they are, who tarnish the reputation of our great U.S. military and our intelligence services,” said the secretary. “We hold our own accountable better than the ICC has done for the worst perpetrators of mass criminal atrocities.” Similarly, Israel’s military maintains a massive legal bureaucracy in the form of its Military Advocate General (MAG) Corps, an organization notoriously known for its heavy demands on the IDF’s operational proce-

dures. For the 2014 Gaza war alone, a conflict that lasted barely six weeks, the MAG opened no fewer than nineteen criminal investigations against soldiers suspected of “lawsof-warfare violations.” More than any other sign of corruption or bias, it is the fact that Israel and the United States are outside any reasonable understanding of the ICC’s mandate ICC Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda that exposes what these investigations are really conflict. For example, in a petition delivered to about. The Court is attempting to advance policy the ICC several months ago, Germany declared agendas in the guise of judicial proceeding. In the any investigation into Israel by the Court illegitcase of Israel specifically, this reality could hardimate and stated that a resolution to the regionly be any clearer. Honey It’s Sweeter Than You Think By Cindy Weinberger MS, RD, CDN

“H

oney, could you pass the honey?” “Which one?” Did you know that there are at least 40 different types of honey? Each one has a distinctive taste and unique properties. Year after year, the apple is traditionally dipped in the honey, yet honey doesn’t get nearly enough of the recognition that

it deserves. Honey has a lot more to it than its sweet taste. Not only is honey used to sweeten foods but it is used as a medicine as well. Honey is wellknown for its healing properties. This is mainly because honey is made from hydrogen peroxide – yes, the same hydrogen peroxide that your mother poured on an open wound

to prevent infections. When honey comes in contact with a wound, the hydrogen peroxide is released, allowing the honey to kill bacteria on an open wound and even antibiotic resistant bacteria, MRSA. Additionally, honey absorbs moisture from the wound through its hydroscopic properties, thus further promoting its healing. Even more so, honey contains many phytochemicals such as carotenoids, phytosterols, phenolics, and peptides. These are important for our health in general, but more specifically, these phytochemicals support immunity and activate cytokines which are anti-inflammatory, thus preventing inflammation of a wound. Due to these properties, recent research suggests that honey may even help treat ulcers. Aside wound healing, honey is famous for boosting immunity, increased endurance during exercise, and improved brain function. Honey has been shown to kill cancerous cells as well. Some honeys have been tested for anti-tumor activity. This is because honey possesses carcinogen-preventing and anti-tumor properties. Honey has many natural sugars which helps prevent fatigue during exercise. Ancient Olympic athletes would eat honey and dried figs to enhance their performance. Experts propose replacing coffee or other caffeinated drinks with honey

each morning to combat fatigue. Try spreading honey on a piece of toast or adding honey to a cup of decaffeinated tea as a means of waking you up. Moreover, studies have illustrated that honey contains antioxidants that were able to prevent cognitive decline and dementia while enhancing the brain’s circulation. Another popular use of honey is the famous Milk and Honey Remedy. A glass of warm milk with a teaspoon of honey helps calm the soul and induce sleep. Other medicinal properties of honey include that it’s anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral, offers autoimmune protection, increases eye health, produces a prebiotic effect (promotes healthy gut), promotes calcium and selenium absorption, and lastly aids in wound healing. As you can clearly see, honey does a lot more than sweeten up foods. The question is: do all types of honey have these properties? If so, which is the best choice?

Raw Honey Raw honey is the type that’s closest to the way the bees make it since it is extracted right from the honeycomb. Raw honey is amber colored and has traces of pollen and wax. Because of the pollen, eating raw honey helps immunize against allergies.

58 Many experts recommend raw honey for optimal health benefits – not the commercially pasteurized honey that is filtered of all the good stuff. Raw honey has all the vitamins, nutrients, and enzymes intact. Raw honey contains the antioxidants, and antibacterial properties discussed above. Raw honey also helps ward off allergies, boosts immune function, and promotes digestive health. The honey that we all think of, and that most probably fills up our honey dishes, has no medical value. It’s all sugar – mainly high fructose corn syrup, which has been linked to diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and liver damage.

Wild Honey Wild honey, like raw honey, is the form highly recognized for the healing benefits. Wild honey is dark in color and not as sweet. The general rule about honey is: the lighter the honey, the more mild the taste. The darker the honey, the

stronger the flavor.

Buckwheat Honey I’m sure many of you have enjoyed tea with honey to cure the common cold. Many of you have

bacteria that cause infections. Buckwheat honey is popular for its common cough and cold treatment.

Organic Honey It is questionable if organic honey

The lighter the honey, the more mild the taste.

probably even tasted spoonfuls of honey to suppress a cough. How about this old-fashioned remedy to soothe a sore throat? A chopped onion in honey. Why are there so many remedies with honey? That’s because honey is considered a demulcent –meaning it soothes inflamed mucous membranes. Not only does honey soothe the throat, but it also kills certain

even exists. Many beekeepers admit that organic honey is almost impossible. Some people have the opinion that all honey available in the market is natural and obtained from the wild. Others feel that, during its production, the honey gets sprayed and contaminated with the pesticides sprayed on the crops and weeds. The bees often get sprayed and are poisoned with the pesticide, and many

times, the bees collect pollen and nectar that has been contaminated. Completely pesticide-free bees and honey is nearly impossible, but hey, if it makes you feel better if it says “organic” on the jar, then go for it. There are many more types of honey out there. These are just a few basic ones out of the 40. Don’t serve all 40 at your Rosh Hashana meal! One is enough to make you have a sweet, healthy, and happy new year!

Notable Quotes “Say What?!”

Sorry to have to provide the reality check again, but when CNN polled registered voters in August in just the swing states, Biden and Trump were in a virtual tie. In Minnesota, it’s 47-47. In Michigan, where Biden had a big lead, Trump has closed the gap to 4 points. Are you ready for a Trump victory?

Are you mentally prepared to be outsmarted by Trump again? Do you find comfort in your certainty that there is no way Trump can win? Are you content with the trust you’ve placed in the DNC to pull this off? The Biden campaign just announced he’ll be visiting a number of states— but not Michigan.

When leaders – let’s say in the Muslim world – talk a lot of violent talk, and encourage their supporters to be willing to commit violence…in order to win against whoever they decide is the enemy, we in the US media describe that as they are radicalizing those people, particularly when they are radicalizing young people, that’s how we talk about the way Muslims act. - Joy Reid, forgetting her wokeness for a moment, and arguing that Trump urges his supporters to commit violence, thus making them like Muslims

I can only imagine if Luka Doncic had something like that to you, and it got caught on tape. I can only imagine during Black Lives Matter how much of a big deal that would have been, considering today’s climate and state. It would have been a massive story. Luka would have lost all credibility in this space; everybody would have been commenting on it. People would have asked LeBron about it… Everybody would have had some kind of statement about it, but it’s not that big of a story because Trez said it to a Caucasian person. - Former NBA player Jay Williams on Twitter after LA Clippers forward Montrezl Harrell, who is black, cursed out Dallas Mavericks player Luka Doncic on the court for being white

Sound familiar? I’m warning you almost 10 weeks in advance. The enthusiasm level for the 60 million in Trump’s base is OFF THE CHARTS! – From a Facebook post by left-wing activist Michael Moore

We cannot deny the fact that fat-phobia is rooted in anti-Blackness. - University of California sociology professor Sabrina Springs in a CBN Originals documentary, “Speaking Frankly/ Fat Shaming,” arguing that diets are meant to demean black people who were not taught to eat sensibly

Whether he said it or not, it is believable. - Dan Rather, responding to a completely debunked story in the Atlantic that President Trump disparaged U.S. soldiers who lost their lives during World War I

Dating Dialogue

What Would You Do If… Moderated by Jennifer Mann, LCSW of The Navidaters

B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M

Dear Navidaters, I’ve always been the type of person that does not like being out of control. One of my problems with dating has always been being in the passenger seat – literally and figuratively. Although nothing came of my Zoom dating, I had a few good experiences that could have led to something if it had been the right person. I felt much freer because I wasn’t under the control of a stranger that I was meeting for the first time, who was deciding where and when we’d meet and how long our date would be. I’ve been dating for a while (I’m 27 years old), and the thought of going back to conventional dating is frightening. Why shouldn’t the new normal be “meet via Zoom” once or twice just to see if something will come of it? That would make me feel so much more comfortable but I’m afraid that if I suggest that to shadchanim or boys, that would come across as weird… What are your thoughts? -Rebecca

The Panel The Rebbetzin Rebbetzin Faigie Horowitz, M.S. ebecca, it’s high time for you to confront the issue of control. It’s probably an issue that has come up at work and in social situations, as well when you date. It’s good that you are aware of it but you haven’t finished the work of dealing with your nature in relationships. The fact that you are frightened to go back to conventional dating is a signal that you have to deal with this now. You may have some social anxiety or find carrying conversations and relationships forward a problem. Get a skilled social skills coach or therapist, and work on this. It will take a while. Talking about your fears as well as developing skills through practice will take some time but it will be worth it. This is probably why you haven’t had positive dating experiences. I think that it’s more important to work on this matter than “coming across as weird” to shadchanim or boys by suggesting Zoom dating for starters. In any case, there is nothing wrong with suggesting beginning with Zoom dating young men who are currently out of town. It’s the equivalent of having a cup of coffee and taking it from there. But you have much work to do before going back to shadchanim and dating. Get started on learning to feel comfortable communicating with others in various situations and handling light socializing. You need this social skills growth process to start before you can successfully date.

R

The Shadchan Michelle Mond hat I hear you saying is that you feel more in control being physically separated from the person you are going out with. To you,

W

talking through the screen gives you more control over the situation – you can end the meeting and it will all be over. No more waiting until the end of an in-person date! To me, this is an indication that you are not currently in the place you should be while dating. Dating for marriage is much more real and intimate than the ease of talking through a screen because it is in your comfort zone. There is so much about dating that is uncomfortable. Like anything worthwhile, the struggle in the process prepares you for the ultimate reward. Opening yourself up to potential hurt is part of the process. Risking the possibility of having bad dates with the wrong people is part of the process. Relinquishing control to Hashem, The Ultimate Shadchan, is part of the process. You describe your feelings going back to in person dating as “frightening.” Can you work through those feelings of fear? Can you use self-talk to mentally soothe this social anxiety? Do you have the self-confidence to go out on a date and give it your all? These are all things you should work on because meeting a person face-toface will always be the most efficient. With newfound self-confidence and a lack of social fear, you will not only be able to date face-to-face again, but will likely be a better candidate to the other person. Either work with a therapist, or do research on your own about social anxiety to get past this fear. Hatzlacha!

The Single Rena Friedman ebecca, it is extremely difficult to be in a situation where you have absolutely no control and that is all you desire. I, too, have personally struggled with this throughout dating, and I can feel your frustrations. It is very hard to let go. Ideally, it is best to meet someone

R

in person. Zoom might appear to be a good option at first, but it leaves too much to the imagination. I have reiterated this point multiple times over the last few weeks, so I want to hone in on the element of control that you mention. I believe that is an area where I can offer personal insights on. While we both have the desire for control in common, the source of where the outside control comes from is different. Why do you feel like you are under the control of the stranger you are meeting for the first time? What are the underlying reasons behind this? I urge you to reflect on that, as well as why it seems so frightening to go back to dating the regular way. Nothing has inherently changed when it comes to dating itself. Warning: you are going to roll your eyes at what I am about to say. I’ve rolled my eyes to this too, and perhaps it was really just adjusting them. Hashem runs the world. You do not. It is His world, and until you can internalize that and live by it your life as a whole, especially dating, is going to be extremely difficult. You need to find a way to let go and let Hashem run His world or you are going to suffer tremendously because you are carrying Hashem’s HUGE burden on your very tiny shoulders. I know that was harsh. Again, I only say this because I went through that transformation and am now unable to recognize the person who stares back at me in the mirror. So, what did I do? Talk to Hashem all the time, whether in formal tefillah, hisbodedus, Tehillim, or just a regular conversation, and tell Him what you are experiencing. Tell Him how difficult dating is for you, and ask Him to help you find the right person for you. Include Hashem in your life and speak to your friends and family about Hashem as if He actually exists and is there. Read hashgacha pratis stories before you go to bed. At first this all might seem awkward, but the more you do it, the more you will gen-

On a shidduch date the young man is, literally and metaphorically, in the driver’s seat.

uinely believe it. My favorite pasuk in Tehillim is “Hashlech al Hashem yehavcha, v’hu yechalkelecha.” This means cast your burden on Hashem and He will sustain you. It is as simple as it sounds, although very hard. Put it on Hashem, tell Him that you need Him and His help and that you cannot do it alone. Place the burden on Him and let Him take care of it. I have experienced it myself. Yes, there are still times that I panic and worry, but I always go back to Hashem and I truly believe He needed me to have those experiences that shaped and molded me to get me to the exact place I am in today. I really would be happy to discuss this more with you and hope you reach out. As always, all feedback, thoughts, and ideas are welcome: renafriedman2@gmail.com.

The Zaidy Dr. Jeffrey Galler t’s not surprising that you are far more comfortable with Zoom dating than in-person dating. If you’re on a live date and realize after ten minutes that you can’t stand the young man, you are, nevertheless, stuck for a few hours while smiling politely and praying for the evening to end. By contrast, on a Zoom date, af-

ter ten unpleasant minutes, you can smile sweetly and exclaim, “Oh, I’m so sorry! I have to go now. I just realized that I forgot to feed my goldfish,” and click “End meeting.” I actually like your suggestion to first “meet” a prospective date online, and then decide if you’d like to meet in-person. Unfortunately, I don’t think this novel proposal will be generally accepted in our contemporary culture. Note how the very idea of exchanging pre-shidduch photographs is not viewed favorably by many. Rebecca, you have been dating for a good

number of years now and sound like you are somewhat jaded, exasperated, and frustrated by the whole scene. Repeatedly going through the time and effort that it takes to prepare for a date, only to discover that, once again, you have not yet found “Mr. Right” can be very dispiriting. But, as long as you’re sure that your expectations are realistic, be persistent and don’t let setbacks dampen your enthusiasm. so much better than reading a resume. It’s a real, live person! Then, there is the freedom that Zoom dating afforded to so many. Not “having” to sit in the car at someone’s mercy (if you don’t like him) is kind of great! And you could wear pajama bottoms and no one would be the wiser! So, I understand the allure of Zoom dating. We don’t know what the future holds. We never did, but we are all feeling the truth now more than ever. We just don’t have a clue. One thing I know is that shidduch dating cannot be stopped. The clever and creative lengths people went to meet and date show the human spirit and drive to connect. While Zoom dating is wonderful,

ed, didn’t get discouraged or give up, and her books have now sold over 500 million copies. Finally, you are absolutely right with your comments about not being in control. Although we all claim to believe in egalitarianism and female equality, on a shidduch date the young man is, literally and metaphorically, in the driver’s seat. My advice is for you to remember the line from the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding: “The man may be the head of the household. But the woman is the neck, and she can turn the head whichever way she pleases.” I recently sent coffee cup presents to my brother and sister-in-law for their

it is not the future of relationships. Relationships require two human beings, off screen. It’s important to date in-person in my opinion. Zoom dating is nice and has its benefits but you must be around another person as well. There is an entire science around people being attracted to each other based on pheromones and scent. There are elements of being around someone physically that simply can’t be captured through a screen. One thing I personally hope we take from the Zoom shidduch groups moving forward is that it’s nice for men and women to be able to be together and meet in a kosher environment. It’s nice for people to become more than a resume and have the ability to say, “I’d like to go out with her/him!” I think a lot of people felt the chore-like nature of dating disappeared as they became excited to have interaction with men/women. There’s something so human and natural about that that many of my clients have enjoyed.

I’ve rolled my eyes to this too, and perhaps it was really just adjusting them.

54th wedding anniversary. The inscription on his cup reads, “54 years of wearing the pants in the family.” The inscription on her cup reads, “54 years of letting him think that.”

If you asked your question to a shadchan, I have a hunch you wouldn’t be the first. Far from it. But I don’t believe it is the future of dating. You may benefit from a few sessions with a dating coach/therapist or mentor about the journey you have been on. It isn’t an easy one. Sometimes talking to someone can help ease the heavy load. Dating isn’t easy. But G-d willing it will be well worth it! Closing the Circle My Return to the Faith My Grandfather Abandoned By Emuna BenGera

B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M

“G

randpa, I met the man I’m going to marry.” Sitting in his kitchen in Florida, my grandfather raised his eyes. This was unexpected, even coming from me. Trying to sound calm he asked, “In India?” “Yes.” With his voice raised, his attempt to sound perfectly calm and off-handed totally unconvincing, he asked, “An Indian?” I laughed, enjoying his obvious irritation. It was part of our relationship, irritating each other. We were too much alike. “No Gramps,” I smiled, finally answering him. “He’s Israeli.” “Israeli? He’s Jewish?” His voice took on a tone I didn’t quite understand. “Yes, he’s Jewish. His name is Moshe.” Total silence. Grandpa was pale.

“That was my father’s name,” he finally whispered. I didn’t want to miss this rare opportunity to uncover my grandfather’s mysterious past that he refused to talk about. Quickly and quietly I said, “Please Grandpa, tell me what happened.” Maybe because I was going to marry a man named Moshe, maybe because I was his beloved granddaughter, and maybe because he was already 78 years old and stifled under 55 years of silence, he told me the story his own son, my father, had never heard. It was a sad story with a bittersweet ending.

H

e told me of his childhood of poverty, religious stringencies and strictness. Brooklyn in the Great Depression wasn’t an easy place to grow up,

especially with parents who didn’t speak English. His parents came from Chechnov, Poland, and he was the first son in the family and the first child born in America. Despite the poverty, he was a promising yeshiva bochur in Chaim Berlin Yeshiva. He told me about the total lack of warmth and joy he felt in his home and in his Torah observance. He enlisted in the army where most of his friends were not Jewish, and he eventually left the way of his fathers and abandoned his connection to Judaism. At one of his army buddy’s wedding, he met my grandmother and they fell in love and married. There is one lone picture of my father as a baby being held by my religious great-grandparents. It was the only time they met him. Nobody is smiling. The next time my grandfather saw his parents was at their funer-

als. It was a miracle that my father unknowingly married a Jewish woman (who didn’t know that she was Jewish herself). But that’s a whole other story.

T

hree years later, Moshe and I came for a visit from Israel with our infant son for my mother’s yahrzeit. I sat next to my grandfather in my brother’s kitchen, eating kosher food from our kosher pots we had lugged with us. I tried to keep everything light and normal, as if the black beret covering my hair was totally normal. As if long sleeves and ankle length skirts in August were perfectly in fashion. We sat in comfortable silence. Suddenly Grandpa turned to me, “Ya know kiddo, I’m really proud of you.” “You are?” I exclaimed, not be-

72 lieving, “Really? Why?” Every moment of this trip felt as though I was apologizing for my existence. “I look at you and Moshe, and I see you doing it with all your heart. You feel it and you do it. All my life I saw people doing, with no feeling in their heart. I’m really proud of you.” Tears welled up in my eyes. I hadn’t expected that. My gruff grandpa was proud of me for being religious. I guess I could be proud of myself for a change, instead of trying to prove that I’m not such a weirdo or that Moshe isn’t brainwashing me. That little conversation was a gift I hold in my heart, a tiny box I occasionally open. And when I look inside, I see light streaming out and feel that my path makes sense again.

T

hree and a half years later and we were expecting our third baby any day. My dad called. “Grandpa isn’t feeling well. You should talk to him now.” I got on the phone and my grand-

father asked, his voice weak, “Pray for me.’’ “But Grandpa, you can pray too. G-d hears you.” “Don’t you preach to me, young lady,” he warned me, irritated.

you asked me not to preach to you, but will you please do just one little favor for your chutzpadik granddaughter? Will you please say the Shema just once? I love you.

“I look at you and Moshe, and I see you doing it with all your heart. You feel it and you do it.”

I sent him an email, and asked my father to read it out loud. Dear Grandpa, I want you to know that I love you, and that you’ve been such a big influence in my life. I know

Grandpa asked the letter to be read over and over. He cried. He asked to call a rabbi who helped him say the Shema, and he talked to him for a while alone. Maybe he even said viduy, the final confession

one says before he dies. Later that week, I gave birth to our third son in Jerusalem. I called my grandfather to say mazel tov. He could no longer talk, so he clapped his hands. The next day he passed away. He was 83 years old. Every morning, I take out my siddur and turn the frayed pages, talking to G-d. I turn page after page and get to page 83, the Shema. As I say the words, I always think of my grandfather, where he is now and the nachas his soul is hopefully receiving from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and how the full circle has been closed.

A Brief History of the Prevention of Child Abuse By Rabbi Azriel Hauptman

Today, we take the existence of Child Protective Services as a given. Every state has a government agency, regulated by state and federal laws, that strives to protect children from abuse and neglect through a variety of approaches and interventions. The history of the creation of these agencies is both fascinating and complex and demonstrates how difficult it can be for a society to recognize the prevalence of children whose abuse is lurking in the shadows. In this article,

we will focus on a couple of seminal events in the history of society’s approach to the protection of children. The Case of Mary Ellen Mary Ellen, born in 1864 in New York City, was orphaned from her father as an infant and given up by her mother, who was suffering from crippling poverty, when she was under two-years-old. She was placed in foster care where she was subjected to eight years of severe abuse which

included forced heavy labor, repeated beating and burnings, being locked for long periods of time in a closet, and almost never seeing the light of the day. In the crowded apartment buildings of Manhattan in the mid-nineteenth century, it was impossible to keep secrets from the neighbors who all were very aware of the ongoing abuse but had no idea how to stop it. A concerned neighbor turned to the police department for help in removing the child from the home. The police refused to get involved. Although there were some child cruelty laws in place, the police department did not feel that this was within their jurisdiction. Not knowing where to turn, the neighbors turned to the recently-founded American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit organization that advocated for the prevention of cruelty to animals. The founder of the society, Henry Bergh, fought in the courts for the removal of Mary Ellen from her home. Statutes regarding cruelty to animals were partially utilized in the crafting of the legal argument. Mrs. Mary Connolly, the foster mother, was sentenced to one year in prison. This was the first documented court case of child abuse in the history of the United States and marked the moment when child abuse was elevated to the level of cruelty to animals! Thankfully, the public outrage over this case started the ball rolling in the development of laws and agencies aimed at the prevention of child abuse. The Battered Child Syndrome

Another watershed event in the history of the prevention of child abuse was the publication in 1962 of an article titled “The Battered Child

Syndrome” by pediatric psychiatrist Dr. C. Henry Kempe. Until that time, when doctors would notice repeated injuries to a child they would not suspect the possibility of child abuse being a factor in the child’s multiple visits to the hospital. Physicians would instead explore the possibility of an undiagnosed bone disease that made this child more susceptible to bone injuries. Even if child would present with bone injuries, burns, and brain damage, nothing was done to explore the nature of these injuries. Dr. Kempe’s article provided doctors with guidelines on how to recognize the signs of child abuse and how to report any suspected abuse. The article helped challenge conventional wisdom which assumed that child abuse was rare. Eventually, this led to the passage, in 1974, of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) which provided funding for states to develop a network of Child Protective Services. Over time, the scope of the agencies was broadened to include non-physical abuse, neglect, and exposure to domestic abuse. As with all government agencies, there is always vast room for improvements. However, history teaches us that before the emergence of these laws and agencies the prevalence of unfettered child abuse had reached horrific levels. As Chazal teach us (Avos 3, 2) that anarchy ensues when there is no fear of the government.

Dirshu

Dirshu To Hold Sixth Annual International Yom Limud and Tefilla Commemorating Yartzeit of Chofetz Chaim We Need the Zechus of the Chofetz Chaim Now More than Ever By Chaim Gold

If there was ever a time that Klal Yisrael needed to unite in a massive outpouring of tefillah and achdus; if there was ever a time when tens of thousands of tinokos shel beis rabban needed to come together to invoke rachmei shomayim, that time is now! Klal Yisrael has been through so much this year! It has been an unprecedented year of uncertainty, there has been much sickness in Klal Yisrael due to Covid-19 outbreaks. Tragically there have been numerous deaths as well. Sadly, we are still struggling with this pandemic. Our battei medrash, yeshivos, chadorim and schools were closed for months. Baruch Hashem most of them have reopened, but things are not back to normal by any stretch of the imagination. Klal Yisroel desperately needs Divine mercy in what can certainly be called an eis tzarah. Yes, it is an eis tzarah, but to counter an eis tzarah there is something called an eis ratzon, an opportune time for tefillos to be heard in shamayim, an opportune time when Hashem accepts our tefillos with ratzon. The yahrzeit of the heilige Chofetz Chaim is such a time. Many Hundreds of Schools Across the World Offer Riveting Lessons and Programs in Memory of the Chofetz Chaim The remarkable program that Dirshu has designed for schools in North America is sure to have a tremendous impact on tens of thousands of children both in major Jewish centers and in places far from Yiddishkeit hubs. Dirshu has made available extremely compelling, artfully designed

booklets in both English and Yiddish for three different age groups: grades 1-3, 4-5 and 6-8, all written and illustrated in a user-friendly and age appropriate way. Each of the three versions contain beautiful stories about the Chofetz Chaim and other gedolim that emphasize the lessons taught by the Chofetz Chaim along with halachos of Yom Kippur based on the Chofetz Chaim’s sefer Mishnah Berurah, and halachos of shemiras halashon based on the sefer Chofetz Chaim. Some of the material has been beautifully compiled and written by Mrs. Chavivah Pfeifer, a renowned children’s author who has written numerous books with stories and practical lessons for children. The captivating stories and graphics are sure to motivate the children in each age group to read and be inspired. In addition, the combination

of riveting graphics and the clarity of the lessons has been hailed by leading menahelim and mechanchim as a tremendously successful way of bringing the lessons of the Chofetz Chaim to life. As a complement to the program, the famed Rebbe Hill, has recorded a CD with a story of the Chofetz Chaim to be distributed to each child in the many participating schools. In their effort to reach tinokos shel beis rabban from across the spectrum, Dirshu has brilliantly designed a tailormade Yiddish version of the booklet for the Chassidishe chadorim. Those schools will be distributing a CD made especially for the occasion by the famed Chassidishe rebbi and storyteller, Rabbi Leibish Lish. Throughout the diverse communities across the United States and Canada, a wide range of more than 150 boys and girls schools, chadarim and Bais Yaakov’s that truly represent the entire panoply of Orthodox Jewry, has signed up for the Yom Limud and Tefilla school programs. They include schools hailing from communities such as Monsey, NY; Lakewood, NJ; Brooklyn, NY; Manhattan, NY; Toronto, Canada; Houston, TX; Baltimore, MD; Cleveland, OH; Waterbury, CN; Phoenix, AZ; Passaic, NJ; Denver, CO; Boston, MA; Los Angeles, CA; and Providence, RI. In addition, countless Chassidishe schools in Brooklyn, Lakewood and Monsey will also be participating. This is in addition to schools, Chadarim and Bais Yaakov girls throughout all of Eretz Yisrael and Europe who will participate in the Yom Limud and Tefilla. According to Rabbi Shlomo Rozenstein of Dirshu “Hundreds

of schools in Eretz Yisrael, North America and Europe that together encompasses hundreds of thousands of children will participate in the Yom Limud and Tefilla utilizing the unique content provided to commemorate the auspicious day. Aside from the many schools participating in the Jewish centers of Eretz Yisrael and North America, there will be tens of schools in the Former Soviet Union, schools in South Africa, Australia, South America and even Venezuela. The impact on young boys and girls learning about the Chofetz Chaim will be both huge and unparalleled,” he exclaimed. Countering Danger with Unified Tefillah The bottom line? Every thinking Jew can’t fail to realize that we are living in truly perilous times. Aside from the tremendous instability in the world due to the worldwide pandemic, the political climate is also a cause for great worry. The harsh political strife and extraordinary, mean-spiritedness has reached unprecedented levels. There is civil unrest and the threat of terrorism at home and abroad, that can have severe ramifications. At this uncertain juncture we are in dire need of tremendous rachmei shomayim. Now, right before the Yom Hadin is the time to join together with untold numbers of Jews all over the world to daven for Klal Yisrael. The week of the Chofetz Chaim’s yahrzeit is also an exceedingly auspicious time to invoke Divine mercy. Join with Klal Yisrael in Dirshu’s 6th Annual International Yom Limud and Tefilla this coming on Monday, 25 Elul/September 14.

Apple Pie Rugalech with Whipped Cream If you bake one dessert for the holidays this should be it! Cinnamon- and nutmeg-coated apples blend together to create a perfectly spiced apple butter that is spread over malawach dough and then shaped into rugelach. Once baked, they are served with a cinnamon glaze and vegan coconut whipped cream. INGREDIENTS Malawach dough 2 large apples (gala or granny smith) ¼ cup brown sugar 2 teaspoons cinnamon ¼ teaspoon allspice (or nutmeg) 2 tablespoons flour Juice of 1 lemon

PREPARATION Cook carrots in oil for 15 minutes. Add honey, sugar, orange juice and salt to pot. Combine well and cook over low flame for an hour, stirring every so often so it doesn’t stick to pot. Optional: add 2 slices pineapple (or ¼ cup pineapple chunks) and cook for an additional 10 minutes.

Love Ya – Don’t Leave! By Rivki D. Rosenwald Esq., MFT, CLC

on’t go. Please. I need you. Your warmth! Your embrace! I absolutely break out in a lovely sweat when I am with you. Truly, you make each day like a walk in the sunshine. In fact, every day with you is a walk in the sunshine. I’ll miss you when you leave.

After all, who wants summer to leave? It’s dwindling ever so quickly. School is starting already! Or maybe it isn’t – or is – or isn’t?! The High Holidays are just around the corner. And I’m pretty sure I mean that literally! At least the prayer gatherings are. Usually, when shuls charge for seats, it’s quite out of proportion to

what they are worth. And, still, we are okay with paying for it because we are really donating to the shul. But now, the temples can’t even feign your donation is covering a seat because in most neighborhoods, we are utilizing our own chairs. Still, of course, we should give the holiday donation anyway. Especially because spiritual guidance and community connection is always kept alive by our shuls. Hey, I wonder if they can do something about keeping summer alive, too?

matches my body temperature. That’s crazy, I know. But I do laps in what’s practically a hot tub, and so 98.6 is refreshing, comparatively. Truthfully, that hot can be a little hot for me. Still, summer does create the opportunity to spend lot of time outside enjoying the yard, the beach, the park, and so much more. And anyway, I was proud to be representing the human race out in the streets. Because corona made many animals think they owned the deserted places. So a few aggressive

I happen to like weather that matches my body temperature.

Admittedly, this summer was odd. There’s were some redeeming features: We certainly got to have some kids around, who, otherwise, would never have given us the time of day! We did not have too many events pulling us away from our weekly backyard barbecues on Sundays which ordinarily gets trumped by weddings, engagement parties, and bar mitzvahs. And somehow, the weather just knew to behave and be beautiful. The summer is my favorite time. But I do get it that some people prefer other seasons. Not everyone can’t get it right! I happen to like weather that

humans had to get out there and fight the bears and lions and show them who are actually the kings of the neighborhoods. Absolutely no “thank you” is necessary. I was going to go outside anyway. Just do me a favor – next time you find yourself running from a newly liberated grisly or heading around the corner to pray, throw in an extra prayer for me to get a few more days of summer!

California Dreamin’ By Allan Rolnick, CPA

A

fter World War II, a generation of returning veterans turned California into America’s golden dream. Industries like shipbuilding and aerospace created thousands of good jobs. California engineers and educators built world-class roads and universities. California vineyards started producing world-class wines. Today that dream is turning dark. Crushing real estate prices, choked freeways, and struggling schools are draining the fabled quality of life. Winemakers are contemplating which varietals pair best with wildfires and

mudslides. Problems that used to squeeze families out to more-distant suburbs are pushing them to leave the state entirely. New York has Little Italy. Miami has Little Havana. How long will it be before we see Little Californias full of Golden State refugees in cities like Denver, Phoenix, and Dallas? Naturally, taxes play a part in the exodus. California already has the highest state income tax in the country, at 13.3% on income over $1 million. Legislators have introduced a bill hiking that rate to 16.8% on income over $5.9 million, retroactive to

January 1 of this year. California disallows all sorts of federal tax breaks like qualified business income, bonus depreciation, and first-year expensing over 25,000$. Those rates are even more painful now that the federal deduction for state tax is capped at 10,000$. Now California is eyeing an entirely new tax — on net worth instead of income. Think of it as a property tax, except on everything else you own. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders made wealth taxes centerpieces of their presidential runs. Warren’s “Ultra-Millionaire tax” would have taken 2% of assets over

a different group of lawmakers from introducing an “Extreme Wealth Tax” that would give California the first state-level wealth tax. Their proposal starts at 0.4% of net worth over $30 million. That may not sound like much to get excited about. But for a guy like Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, with a net worth of $98 billion, that would mean a $400 million shakedown. The bill’s sponsors say their tax would nick just 30,400 residents and raise $7.5 billion for the state’s general fund. But will the people who already have very nice houses in places like Hawaii, Nevada, and Montana put up with that abuse? New York has floated

For a guy like Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, with a net worth of $98 billion, that would mean a $400 million shakedown. $50 million and 3% over a billion. Best of all, it would have hit just 75,000 registered voters. (Sadly for Warren and her plan, those are the ones with the most money to hire lobbyists to fight the tax.) Of course, collecting the tax would be a different matter. At what point do you value assets that fluctuate, like stocks? What about illiquid assets like real estate, closely-held businesses, and intellectual property? How do you value yachts, cars, and art? What are “three points on the back end” worth when everyone in Hollywood knows “there’s no net”? And who’s going to pay for the auditors to make sure the billionaires do the math right on their new wealth tax forms? Those problems haven’t stopped

a similar proposal, but Governor Cuomo shot it down, fearing it would chase even more Wall Street Masters of the Universe to tax-free Florida. (And the weather is nicer in Palm Beach, too.) Federal, state, and local governments are going trillions into the hole right now to fight Covid. We should expect to see all sorts of new taxes hitting the table: value-added taxes, carbon taxes, financial transaction taxes, and more. We’re keeping an eye out for all of them to help you pay the least! Allan J Rolnick is a CPA who has been in practice for over 30 years in Queens, NY.
