Dear Readers, Is tension a good thing? How about nerves—do they have a purpose? All around us, we see messages telling us to relax and lead stress-free lives. Yet at the same time we’re told life is all about growing and going beyond our natural selves. How can the two mindsets coexist? Chassidic thought teaches that just as our lungs constantly alternate between pulling air in and pushing it out, so too our soul is constantly alternating between two directions. First up, wanting to cleave to the spiritual and break free from the confines of physicality, and then down, focusing on the purpose of our being here and looking to find physical expression of our spiritual being wherever we possibly can. It seems one part of us should indeed be relaxed. After all, we know there’s a Creator of this world who is intimately involved with every detail of its existence! However, another part of us should feel a sort of unsettling feeling that we need to change, and we need to act now. Only G-d knows the perfect middle path; our job is to question where it is. Wishing you a meaningful and relaxing Shabbos, Shalom

Nationwide Agra D’Pirka Program in Baltimore Celebrates its First Anniversary By: Margie Pensak
J
ust a year ago, as our nation celebrated Labor Day, men of all ages, stages, backgrounds, and walks of life celebrated and enthusiastically participated in the opening day of Agra D’Pirka in Baltimore. The organized, high-level Monday-Thursday morning Kollel learning program, including a light breakfast, is geared towards local professionals, business owners, college students, retirees, or anyone who wishes to increase his morning limud haTorah. However, Baltimore is no longer the “newest kid” on the Agra D’Pirka block, which includes the vast network of Agra D’Pirka locations including: Kew Gardens Hills, Flatbush, Boro Park, Monsey, Lakewood, Miami, and Boston. Agra D’Pirka recently announced that it will further expand to include programs in Los Angeles and West Palm Beach. This year’s Labor Day Agra D’Pirka program in Baltimore, held on Monday, September 2, featured Rabbi Dovid He-
ber, shlit”a, Rav of Khal Ahavas Yisroel Tzemach Tzedek, which hosts the program. In preparation for Rosh Hashana, Rav Heber, the author of Sefer Shaarei Zmanim on the complexities of the Jewish calendar and time in Jewish law, discussed how the time of the molad (new moon) affects when Rosh Hashana begins. He elaborated on the rules of the molad times including Lo Adu Rosh, that Rosh Hashana can never occur on Sunday, Wednesday or Friday - even if the molad occurs on those days. Making it especially relevant to this coming Rosh Hashana, Rabbi Heber indicated that this coming Molad for Tishrei occurs on Sunday, but Rosh Hashana is a day later to ensure that Hoshana Rabba occurs on Sunday and not Shabbos so that we can properly fulfill the mitzva of Aravos. Next, Rav Zvi Einstadter, shlit”a, Maggid shiur, Yeshivas Ner Yisroel, addressed the pasuk in the parsha of the week -- “lo sossur min hadavar… yamin u’samol“. He extrapolated on

the Rambam that speaks about not deviating from what Chazal were misakin, and how anything that Chazal tell us we need to do, turns into a din from the Torah. This makes everything the chachomim say into a level of d’oraisa, of coming from the Torah. So, how can we be more lenient on things that are m’drabonon, as opposed to a m’doraisa? Rav Einstadter mentioned, for example, if a person is not sure if he recited Birkas Hamazon, a bracha that is m’doraisa, he does have to recite it, but if he is not sure if he recited the bracha Shehakol, a bracha which is m’drabonon, he does not have to say it. If every single m’drabonon is on the same level as m’doraisa, according to Chazal -because of the pasuk “lo sossur”, how can we be makil on the latter? The Rav clarified that Chazal only instituted these halachos when there was no doubt that the bracha was mistakenly omitted. While Baltimore participants were shteiging, another major Agra D’Pirka success was held at the FountainView shul, in Monsey. HaRav Eliezer Lieff, shlit”a, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshiva Gedola of South Monsey, discussed preparing for Elul. The Rav noted that dveykus in HaKadosh Baruch Hu should be like a father-son relationship. He also explained the importance of having a Rav, or someone to give you Mussar and being misdabek to learn from his Mehalech Hachayim, in order to grow in Yiddishkeit. Next, Rabbi Benzion Bamberger, the Maggid Shiur of two Agra D’Pirka shiurim in Monsey, went in depth explaining the halochos of Shofar gezulah and the various opinions regarding avodah zarah, as well as teshuvah and how to tackle the yetzer harah. Meanwhile, in Flatbush, Rav Aharon Kahn, shlit”a, Mora D’Asra, Knesses Bais Avigdor, spoke about the Rambam’s review on Torah in the context of making a living. Rav Moshe Scheinerman, shlit”a, Mara S’Asra, Bais Hamedrash Imrei Tzvi, spoke about the impor-
tance of coming close to Hashem during the special days of Elul. Subsequently, Rav Fishel Schachter, Maggid Shiur, Yeshiva Torah Vodaas, spoke about the need to make space for others, and how if you make space for others you are really making space for yourself. He emphasized how one has to see Hashem’s hashgacha in everything that is experienced during the course of the year. As one Baltimore participant rushed out the door at the conclusion of the program, he mentioned, “It’s a fantastic break in the middle of the day. The shiurim cover a wide spectrum of subjects, some of which no one will have ever learned before, and some of which no one will have had the knowledge to seek out the answers. That is one of the major attractions of Agra D’Pirka.” Joey Pollak, a first-time Agra D’Pirka-Baltimore participant, shared, “I’m going to be 70 soon. Although, I am still working full-time as a CPA, one of my goals is to attend the Agra D’Pirka program, just not on legal holidays, but every morning, so I can start my day off with a shiur before going to work. My plan is not to retire, but I would like to participate more in this program. “I got a double benefit today, listening to Rav Einstadter and Rav Heber,” continued Mr. Pollak. “I am signing up now for Agra D’Pirka and it was a great start today. I hope to participate in the program more as time goes on, but time will tell how much I will be able to accomplish – there are still demands with Tax Season, but I’m hoping that this is something that I can effectively pursue.” Eli Sofer, coordinator of the Baltimore program, concluded, “Agra D’Pirka fills a void. People who cannot learn full-time can at least get a sprinkling. We are zoche to hearing the greatest talmidei chachomim in our community – including a wonderful Iyun shiur given by Rabbi Yaakov Herskovitz – as well as world-famous speakers, on a daily basis. Anyone who hasn’t yet tried Agra D’Pirka will never know how enjoyable it is until they try it.” For information about the Baltimore program, contact Eli Sofer, 917-7551572, or elicsofer@gmail.com. T
he Jewish Community Softball League by Shimz Cars wrapped up their inaugural season on Sunday, September 1st in auspicious fashion with a dramatic battle between two of the league’s juggernauts, “Levin & Gann” and “Uri Arnson Wedding Photography” in the “Computer Cure, MD” Championship game. Ultimately, it was Levin & Gann who took home the coveted “Computer Cure, MD” Trophy, pulling out a historic 13-8 victory. The league would like to thank all of its players, sponsors, and fans who helped support this initial season. We look forward to year 2 with an expanded group of teams!
To review recaps from the Playoffs and Championship, continue reading. Playoffs Matchup #1
Fired Up Promotions Levin & Gann
9 35
What started as a close back and forth in the first 3 innings, ended as a 35-9 blowout, with Levin and Gann taking the win and advancing to the “Computer Cure, MD” championship. The game turned when L&G’s captain, Yaakov “The Smurf Handler” Rappaport, crushed a 3 run bomb to deep left center field which was immediately followed up by a monster solo shot to right off the bat of Ezra “Cough Drops for Toads” Frager. Those runs put L&G in the lead for good.
Other notable performers included Moshe “Eggs and Yapchik” Wealcatch, who went 5 for 6, David “The Philtrum” Pensak, who was only a triple shy of the cycle, and Steven “Pastrami on” Ryback, who hit his first career triple. Ultimately every L & G player had multiple hits, which helped propel the team to the championship. Playoffs Matchup #2

LBSI Uri Arnson Wedding Photography
9 23
In a highly hyped game, Uri Arnson Wedding Photography took home the win to advance to the finals. UAWP took an early 4-0 lead in the first and eventually built their lead up to 7. LBSI kept it close, thanks to a mammoth grand slam by slugger Yaki Strauss. Why, I think it may have just landed on Yehuda Abedon’s cruise ship in the Atlantic! That’s how far I think he hit it! (Because Yehuda Abedon, who is one of our players, is on a cruise right now and the ship is very far away so any ball that would hit the ship must have been hit really far.) But UAWP Photography pulled it together and responded by scoring 4 more in the 5th. At that point, UAWP never looked back thanks to Pitcher, Richard “The” Buck “Stops Here” contributing an incredible pitching performance (which included 3 innings of 3 and out while also notching 2 strikeouts.) And to put a bow on all of it, Leon “The Ukranian Ululator” Sheynman had a simply marvelous game, going 5 for 6 while playing hurt.

JCSL by “Shimz Cars” Wraps Up Successful First Season
13 8
Well, the first ever JCSL Championship certainly lived up to its hype.
While the official title of the game was the “Computer Cure, MD” Championship, it was dubbed the “Strum Bowl” (or “Stromboli” for short) by many league fans, due the face-off between father, Tali Strum (of Uri Arnson Wedding Photography) and son, Rafi Strum (of Levin and Gann). The game looked like it would be a classic pitcher’s duel as L&G’s Yaakov Rappaport and UAWP’s Richard Buck and their respective defenses held the offenses in check for the first half of the game. In the bottom of the fifth, the score was tied at 0-0. In the bottom of the 5th, UAWP finally got on the board after slugger Moshe “Tuchman” Tuchman hit a triple to the right-center gap and then scored on a single. However, with team owner (Levin and Gann senior partner) Stanford G. Gann Sr. in the crowd, L & G regrouped and decided they were going to win this one for Stanford. With 1 out and 2 on in the top of the sixth, L&G outfielder Shmuel “Visual and Performing” Artman hit a 2 run double putting L&G ahead for good. The team followed that up with 3 more in the inning to take a 5-1 lead, thanks in part to Rafi Strum’s RBI double and David “Candace’s Wedding Gown” Pensak’s 2 run blast over the right field wall. L&G tacked on 6 more in the top of the 7th thanks in part to another bomb by Pensak to take an 11-1 lead. While UAWP scored a run in the bottom of the 7th, L&G responded by adding 2 more in the top of the 9th on another 2 run double by Shmuel Artman, bringing the game to the bottom of the 9th with L&G in the (comfortable) lead, 13-2. But it wasn’t over yet as UAWP made L&G sweat, as some timely hitting and costly fielding errors allowed UAWP to score 6 more. But it was L&G that ultimately pulled off the win, bringing home the hardware as the first ever JCSL champions. Thank you to the League, the captains, co-captains, umpires, players, Baltimore County and all others who made this inaugural season a resounding success. L&G looks forward to defending their title next season....which can’t come soon enough!

Jinternship Completes Fifth Successful Season
“I
didn’t realize that Baltimore had kosher restaurants and such a vibrant Jewish community.” These were the remarks of Tamir Berard a participant in the fourth season of JInternship Baltimore-D.C. It was a very successful six week program including a 10 day trip to Sinai retreats in Warrensburg NY. Jinternship recruits students from top universities and connects them with valuable internships in their fields of choice. They are centered in the Baltimore-Washington area. Students live within the Baltimore Jewish community. They spend their days “on the job” and in their evenings,
participate in classes and one on one learning. During the first days of the program, before the internships begin, students explore many mainstays of Jewish life in Baltimore. This gives them a taste of the vibrancy of the Jewish community. These highly inspiring and informative visits include meetings with Rabbi Yosef Wagner at Yeshivas Ner Yisroel, and Mr. Dubie Heyman of Hatzalah of Baltimore and Rabbi Shalom Tendler of the Stare- K. Students also have a weekly opportunity to spend time with bochurim from Yeshivas Ner Yisroel over dinner at local restaurants followed by Chavrusa learning.
Throughout their stay, the participants enjoyed gracious hospitality at several local families. Hosts provided sleeping accommodations, prepared succulent dinners and barbecues, and inspired with delicious Shabbos meals. Students were privileged to work in distinguished locations, including political think tanks, private medical practices, accounting firms and I.T. companies. All of these under the direction of local doctors and businessmen. After the conclusion of the internship, many participants made plans for additional programs which will further develop their growth in Jewish learning. Some have plans to study in Israel
in the near future. Rabbi Zvi Schwartz, Director of Jinternship reported: “Towards the conclusion of this year’s program, participants committed to wear Tefillin every day!” “It was incredible to observe as they were wrapping the Tefillin, they had a true simcha shel mitzvah. We are fortunate to have many special individuals and families who make this program shine. Thank you for hosting the students, securing jobs, participating in chavrusa learning, helping with rides to work and so much more. We’re very grateful to all those who participated and made the program such a success.”

613 Seconds with Mrs. Deborah Rapoport Also, recognizing the necessity of developing strong social-emotional skills as the foundation for academic learning, this year we have created a comprehensive early childhood through middle school social-emotional education and support initiative to teach all students the reflective, self-regulatory, problem solving, and collaboration skills essential for success in school and in life. We know OCA has a theme every year. Can you share the 2019-20 theme with us and how that ties into your goals and OCA’s vision? Our 2019-20 theme, “Building and Rebuilding,” speaks to OCA’s commitment to build upon our vision of Community, Individuality, and Excellence in all aspects of our school. We are proud of OCA’s strong foundation of community warmth and cohesiveness; our progressive, child-centered, and empirically-based instructional methods; and
our goal of achieving excellence in everything we do. In designing our theme for this year, we chose to take it a step further by encouraging students to see themselves as an important part of who we are as an institution. They, too, are OCA Builders! It sounds like you don’t have a lot of free time these days, but tell us a little bit about what you enjoy doing when you are not at OCA Well, that is true. When I’m not at school, I enjoy being with my four adult children, two sons-in-law, and two grandchildren. I love spending time by myself on a quiet lake or in the woods, but I don’t have the opportunity to do so very often. Instead, you are more likely to find me relaxing in my backyard. My husband and I also enjoy attending the Baltimore Speakers Series where we always learning something new and interesting.

We are excited to feature Mrs. Deborah Rapoport Interim Head of School at Ohr Chadash Academy! Mrs. Rapoport, can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Certainly. I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed 20 years’ experience as a Jewish Day School administrator, learning specialist, neuroscience teacher, and provider of professional development programming focused on the neuroscience of learning. I have long loved the field of education because, as a teacher, one has the ability to influence not only what and how students learn when they are in your classroom, but fundamentally how they see themselves and their potential as learners and achievers well into the future. As an administrator, I am passionate about creating a mission-driven school community in which all stakeholders are focused on achieving a common goal. Three years ago, to delve more deeply into the theories and practices of educational leadership, I began pursuing my doctorate in education at Johns Hopkins University in the Mind, Brain, and Teaching program. My husband and I have lived in Baltimore for 22 years and are members of Suburban Orthodox and
Pikesville Jewish Congregation. Your professional background certainly lends itself to be a perfect fit for Interim Head of School. Can you share what drew you to OCA and what excited you about leading a growing school of 320 kids from ages 2-8th Grade? OCA impressed me from the beginning with its mission to integrate Judaic and General studies within a framework that appreciates the Kedusha inherent in all learning. In addition, OCA’s emphasis on progressive, individualized, and empirically-based pedagogy caught my attention right away, especially since I had just spent the past three years immersed in the study of current research in pedagogy and instructional design. Then the fact that OCA was staffed by warm, collaborative, deeply invested, and growth-minded administrators and teachers really clinched it for me. It sounds like OCA has a solid foundation and has grown into an important and unique community fixture over the past 8 years. How do you plan to propel the school into its next phase of growth? Yes, very much so. OCA has accomplished a great deal thus far, especially in terms of having established itself as a strong, cohesive, and Torah-driven school community whose students love coming to school and learning. I want to further develop OCA’s commitment to developing students’ critical thinking, creativity, and writing skills, as well as their facility with the use of technology, all components of 21st century learning.

The United States blocked a United Nations Security Council resolution on the recent flare up in violence between Israel and Hezbollah after deciding that it was biased against Israel. The resolution had attempted to condemn both sides for the recent exchange of fire on the Lebanese border. However, the U.S. decided to block the decision after it became clear that it would not single out the Hezbollah terror group for its role in starting the fighting. According to the AFP, member countries expressed their “deep concern at the recent incidents” over the past week. The draft added that “members of the security council condemned all violations of the Blue Line, both by air and ground, and strongly calls upon all parties to respect the cessation of hostilities.” The condemnation of Israel’s actions while ignoring Hezbollah was too much for Washington, and it blocked the draft resolution twice between announcing that it would veto it should it proceed to the Security Council. A diplomat later said that the U.S. felt it “was impossible for it to back any statement putting Israel’s right to self-determination on an equal footing with Hezbollah.” The resolution came a few days after Israel and Hezbollah exchanged fire on the northern border. Hezbollah had shot two Kornet anti-tank missiles at an IDF ambulance near the town of Avivim, leading Israel to bombard the terror group’s positions with more than 100 shells.
News reports later said that Israel had hoodwinked Hezbollah by evacuating troops that were not actually injured in order to fool the militia into thinking that the attack was successful. The IDF had been on high alert after Israel bombed a target in Beirut a week prior. The strike was the first time Israel attacked Lebanon since the Second Lebanon War ended in 2006, leading Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah to vow revenge.
Netanyahu Exposes New Iranian Nuclear Site Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed two other secret Iranian nuclear sites in a special televised address on Monday. Speaking from the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, Netanyahu first said that Iran had tried to deceive International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors when it came to evidence of nuclear radiation at a facility near Tehran that he had revealed at the UN last September. “The Iranians claimed that it was a carpet cleaning plant. I called on the IAEA to immediately inspect the facility in Turkuzabad. Today, I inform you that the inspectors found uranium nuclear material that Iran was hiding against its international obligations. This is the most serious breach of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,” said Netanyahu.
Netanyahu added that the IAEA director general told him that he had not received cooperation from Tehran, which did everything to hide the incriminating materials. Before our exposure, we saw the

containers in which they hid equipment and nuclear material,” said Netanyahu. “Here is the facility after our exposure – they removed and destroyed the containers, and they covered the site with gravel. This is what is called total coverage. It did not help them because they left behind nuclear material.” Netanyahu then revealed a military site in a remote part of Iran that he said the Islamic Republic used to build nuclear weapons. “Today I find out we have uncovered other secret sites,” Netanyahu continued. “One of the suspected locations is a site for developing nuclear weapons south of Isfahan.” “Just like in Turukozabad, when Iran realized that we were on its trail, they began to hide it,” the prime minister said. “It’s just amazing. Every time they hide anything, we reveal it and then they try to blur their footprints.” Netanyahu’s announcement came following the announcement by the International Atomic Energy Agency that Iran is making advanced centrifuges, a move that is a direct violation of the 2015 nuclear deal.
Greenblatt Leaving the Administration Thirty-year-old Lawrence native Avi Berkowitz has been named as Jason Greenblatt’s replacement as President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East. Greenblatt had suddenly announced last week that he would leave his position following the Israeli elections on September 17. Greenblatt had spent the last two years hammering out the Trump administration’s long-awaited peace plan nicknamed the “Deal of the Century.” In announcing his departure, Greenblatt said that he was “incredibly grateful to have been part of a team that drafted a vision for peace. This vision has the potential to vastly improve the lives of millions of Israelis, Palestinians, and others in the region.” Greenblatt was thanked by both President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his
work on the Deal of the Century. “I wish to thank Jason Greenblatt for his work for peace and security and for speaking the truth about Israel in front of all those who bash it,” said Netanyahu. “After almost 3 years in my Administration, Jason Greenblatt will be leaving to pursue work in the private sector. Jason has been a loyal and great friend and a fantastic lawyer,” added Trump. “His dedication to Israel and to seeking peace between Israel and the Palestinians won’t be forgotten. He will be missed. Thank you, Jason!”
Greenblatt’s replacement will be Avi Berkowitz, who will now be tasked with getting Israel and the Palestinians to agree on the long-awaited peace plan after it is unveiled in September. Berkowitz grew up in Lawrence, New York, and attended Yeshiva of Far Rockaway for high school. Following his graduation, he studied in Yeshiva Kol Torah in Jerusalem and began studying for his undergraduate degree in Queens College. After graduating Queens College, Berkowitz continued his studies at Harvard Law School. However, it was his close ties with Trump’s sonin-law Jared Kushner that launched his career in government. Reportedly meeting during a basketball game at a Passover program in Arizona, the two soon became fast friends. After graduating Harvard, Berkowitz turned down a lucrative job at a top-tier law firm to work at the New York Observer, a newspaper owned by Kushner. Following Trump’s shock victory to become president in 2016, Berkowitz became a special assistant to the president and is said to be very close with America’s highest elected official.

ties to film the polls was unconstitutional. The legislation came amid claims of massive voter fraud in the April elections, with the Arab Bald party reportedly engaging in widespread ballot box stuffing. Numerous testimonies spoke of Balad representatives offering poll supervisors money in exchange for walking out for a few minutes. Police are probing allegations at 24 different ballots.
Sunday 11am-5pm Monday-Thursday 11am-6pm Friday 10am-2pm
In a blow to the Likud, a controversial law enabling political parties to film polling stations failed to garner enough support for the Knesset to vote on it. The Knesset was slated to vote on the law late Monday in time for it to take effect ahead of next Tuesday’s nationwide elections. However, a vote in the Knesset Regulatory committee to fast-track the bill ended in a 12-12 tie, leaving it with no way for it to become law. Avigdor Liberman’s party notably refused to support the bill, arguing that it was designed to allow Prime Minister Netanyahu “to steal the elections” from the Israeli voter. “What Netanyahu is trying to pass is not a voter observer bill; it is an election-stealing bill,” Liberman blustered. Coalition lawmaker Roi Folkman (Likud) also abstained from the vote, leaving the bill dead on arrival. Netanyahu had proposed the law earlier this week and had pushed hard for its passage despite a flood of controversy, the legislation spurred. While Netanyahu claimed that the law was needed to crack down on what he alleged was widespread voter fraud, left-wing factions accused him of attempting to intimidate Arabs from voting. The bill was also hotly opposed by President Reuven Rivlin, Elections Committee Supervisor Hanan Melcer, and Knesset legal advisor Eyal Inon, who said that the bill allowing representatives of private par-
An Israeli father and son were stabbed on Saturday by a terrorist after visiting a Palestinian dentist in the West Bank village of Azun. The father, Yosef Perez, 60, was lightly injured, while his 17-yearold son Liber sustained more serious wounds to his upper body.
The victims are residents of the southern Israeli city of Ofakim, and they went to the dentist for treatment along with Yosef’s brother due to the significantly lower cost of treatment there. Upon leaving the dental practice, they were accosted by a teenage Palestinian male who asked them if they were Jews. Different sources provide conflicting accounts of what came next. While the uncle told Walla news that they denied being Jewish in Arabic, the father told Channel 12 news that they did, in fact, confirm their Jewish identity. “My son was afraid for me. He pushed me aside, and he quickly jumped on him with his head down,” recounted Yosef Perez. “[The attack-

er] took advantage of the position and began stabbing him in his back.” Both men said the assailant was holding a knife in his hand during the encounter and that the dentist helped save them. “The dentist helped us; he jumped on him and held him against the wall and hit him while we escaped,” continued Yosef. “For a year now I have been coming to this dentist for treatment and everything was fine. I never thought something like this would happen.” The dentist, who identified himself as Dr. Amin, told Channel 12 that the men were attacked “inside my clinic… They are my patients.” The father and son were treated at Meir Medical Center in Kfar Saba, where Liber was later listed as in moderate but stable condition. According to Palestinian media reports, the IDF arrested the 15-year-old suspect’s father on Saturday.

Flareups Along the Gaza Border
In the attack the IDF called a “red line,” a kamikaze drone heavily damaged an IDF Humvee but didn’t manage to injure any troops. “The IDF will continue to act against attempts to harm Israeli citizens, and holds the Palestinian terror group Hamas responsible for everything that takes place in the Gaza Strip, and which emanates from there,” said the military. Prime Minister Netanyahu warned a day earlier that Israel was losing patience with the violence coming out of the Gaza Strip and said that Israel would not hesitate to respond. Hamas has been ramping up its rocket fire and border riots recently, betting that Israel would not launch an operation ahead of next week’s Knesset elections. “Hamas is responsible for all aggression emanating from the Gaza Strip. Any attempt to harm our citizens and our soldiers will be met with a forceful response,” Netanyahu said.
Expats Don’t Love the U.S. An Egyptian military delegation entered the Gaza Strip on Monday in an attempt to calm tensions following security escalations in recent days between Israel and Hamas. Members of the delegation toured the Rafah Crossing and the adjacent industrial zone and met with Hamas leader Gaza Yahya Sinwar. The officials had been slated to arrive later in the week but moved up their meeting following a recent flareup in tensions between Hamas and Israel. On Saturday evening, Israeli warplanes bombed three targets in the Gaza Strip after two rockets fell in Israeli territory. The targets included a warehouse used to store gear for Hamas’ naval commandos and two military complexes utilized by its drone fleet in northern and central Gaza Strip.
Skyrocketing healthcare costs and a decreasing sense of personal safety caused the U.S. to plummet in Expat Insider’s annual quality of life report. To reach its conclusions, the study polled more than 20,000 expats living today in 187 different countries. In the report, the term “expat” was defined as an American sent abroad due to work or personal reasons and included 182 assorted nationalities. The report reached its conclusions by asking respondents to rank their current place of residence according

The Week In News to 48 different factors. These data points were then sorted into five categories, which included quality of life, ease of settling in, working abroad, family life, and personal finance. In the report, the U.S. finished a distant 44th out of 64 countries in the quality of life index. A main complaint from respondents was the astronomical cost of health care, with one Australian expat fearing that “something major could happen, like a hospital stay, and I would need a loan to pay the bill.” Despite 57% of those surveyed ranking the U.S.’s overall quality in healthcare, 71% took issue with its escalating cost, making U.S. healthcare the most expensive in the world. With crime and mass shootings rising across the U.S., another issue of concern among expats is personal safety. “The country ranks 49th out of 64 in this subcategory: about seven in ten expats (69%) feel safe in the USA, a lower share than the global average of 81%,” wrote the report. “Less than half (48%) rate the country’s political stability positively, compared to 61% globally.” Other problems raised by expats were the lackluster public transportation in the U.S., the high cost of living, and a hard time finding the proper balance between family and work. Overall, those polled with a full-time job averaged a 44.5-hour work week, above the global average of 43.9 hours. “I work too many hours with not enough flextime or vacation,” said one British national currently living in the U.S.
Some Republican Primaries Cancelled in Support of Trump The Republican parties in South Carolina and Kansas won’t hold nominating contests in 2020 in order to support U.S. President Donald Trump against several would-be GOP candidates aiming for a shot at the White House. South Carolina’s announcement, made on Saturday, echoed Kansas’
Friday move. Officials in both Nevada and Arizona are also examining the option of canceling their primaries, USA TODAY said. The site quoted GOP State Chairman Drew McKissick, who wrote in a statement that “with no legitimate primary challenger and President Trump’s record of results, the decision was made to save South Carolina taxpayers over $1.2 million and forgo an unnecessary primary. “President Trump and his administration have delivered for South Carolinians, and we look forward to ensuring that Republican candidates up and down the ballot are elected in 2020.” Currently, Trump’s challengers include former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, who announced his bid in April, and former Rep. Joe Walsh, who announced that he would run in August. Former South Carolina Gov. and Congressman Mark Sanford expressed disappointment at his state’s decision, which stripped him of his ability to run. “I believe that political parties are about ideas, and ideas are refined and made stronger by debate and that’s what primaries are about,” he said. “The debate of ideas is part and parcel to the American way.” It is not unusual for state parties to cancel primaries when a strong incumbent is running for re-election. According to The New York Times, Democrats canceled 10 presidential primaries in 2012 to support thenU.S. President Barack Obama in his bid for re-election. “These are decisions made entirely by state parties and there are volumes of historical precedents to support them,” Tim Murtaugh, Trump’s campaign communication director, said. “Nevertheless, President Trump will dominate and prevail in whatever contest is placed before him.”
Are Squirrels Eavesdropping on Birds? Grey squirrels may be a lot smarter than we thought. According to a new study published in the journal PLOS One, grey
squirrels commonly eavesdrop on nearby bird chatter in order to update themselves on the absence or presence of nearby predators. During the study, researchers at Oberlin College broadcasted different birdcalls to squirrels in their natural habitat. When hearing the sound of a red-tailed hawk, which is a predator of the squirrels, the animals perked up and began scanning the area for enemies. The behavior included freezing, looking around, or getting ready to run. However, after hearing recordings of non-threatening birds, the squirrels “expressed significantly lower and more rapidly declining levels of vigilant behavior than those exposed to ambient noise.” The squirrels’ tendency to relax when hearing the chatter of birds that are not predators is “likely to indicate safety because such sounds are generally given when imminent threat has not been detected.” This study is groundbreaking in the scientific community because it marks the first time that animals have been documented using noise caused by other animals to give them a sense of safety. While animals commonly pick up cues from their own species, it is rare that they learn to interpret the chatter of other animals for their own benefit. “A few studies have demonstrated eavesdropping on non-sentinel calls within co-foraging groups as an index of safety,” the study reads. “However, to our knowledge, our study is the first to demonstrate eavesdropping on non-sentinel calls outside of a co-foraging group association, indicating that eavesdropping on cues of safety may be more widespread than previously recognized.”
Mississippi Beaches Deserted Because of Toxic Algae Ship Island Excursions, which has survived a world war, hurricanes, global recessions, and a variety of economic challenges since its founding in the 1920s, may finally be forced
to bite the dust after algae responsible for closing Mississippi’s beaches shows no sign of disappearing, HuffPost reported. The cyanobacteria, a blue-green algae, appeared earlier this summer, leading Mississippi to close its 21 Gulf Coast beaches. No one knows when the algae will disappear. Louis Skrmetta, operations manager for Ship Island Excursions, said that “beach vendors have been wiped out.” “I’ve never seen something so dramatic,” he added. “It’s very similar to the BP oil spill…. People are frightened to just walk in the sand.” Scientists have never seen such algae before, since blue-green algal blooms are usually confined to freshwater species. According to Mississippi officials, the algae is the result of record flooding diverted from the New Orleans area which pushed polluted, nitrogen-rich water down the Mississippi River. The polluted water killed oyster reefs and decimated brown shrimp and crab catches, altering the salinity levels of the entire estuarine area. Though the salinity levels are returning to normal, the algae has not disappeared. Exposure to the algae can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and kidney and liver damage, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said. Pets are especially vulnerable, and several dogs have died after exposure to the toxic bloom. Meanwhile, businesses dependent on summer beach tourism are facing enormous losses, with decreases of up to 70%. Commercial fishermen have also been affected and worry that the local fishing industry will be facing its demise due to health advisories, despite the fact that algae have not yet been found in any actual catches. Mississippi’s Department of Marine Resources noted that 90-100% of the state’s oyster reefs have been killed – and they may never recover if the flooding does not stop. Scientists are also investigating whether the algal blooms may also play a role in the deaths of 300 dolphins found along the northern Gulf coast this year – nearly half of which were found in Mississippi.

The Week In News Lightning Strikes WA 1,250 Times
Washington State was all aglow over the weekend when about 1,250 lightning were recorded in the west of the state during a storm that caused widespread power outages on Saturday night, the National Weather Service said. A strong line of thunderstorms developed over the area, bringing frequent lightning, heavy rains, flooding and hail to the Puget Sound region. Lightning occurs when ice particles within a cloud interact with each other through collision, causing the particles to fracture and break apart, according to NASA. The intense heat of the lightning generates a sound called thunder that is transmitted through the air at the speed of sound. Lightning and thunder happen at the same time but since light travels faster than sound, the flash of lightning is seen sooner than thunder is heard. “When lightning strikes, a bright flash of light is generated. Light travels at a constant 186,000 miles/second, which means that we see the flash immediately as it happens,” NASA said. At its peak, the lightning storm caused power outages to over 4,500 customers, according to Seattle City Light.
Preventing Hot Car Fatalities Carmakers have unveiled a series of new safety features meant to stop children from dying in hot cars. In an announcement made last week, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of Global Automakers said that member companies would step up the fight against hot car deaths.
The new and improved safety features include installing rear seat warnings in new cars that utilize “auditory and visual alerts” to warn drivers of sleeping children after the car is shut off. The system will be in place in almost every new car and truck that rolls off the lot by 2025. “Automakers have been exploring ways to address this safety issue, and this commitment underscores how such innovations and increased awareness can help children right now,” said Alliance Interim President and CEO David Schwietert. The move comes as the number of children who died as a result of being left in hot cars continues to rise. With three months remaining in 2019, 40 children have died in the U.S. in overheated cars so far this year, surpassing the national average of 38 and close to the record 53 deaths recorded in 2018.
The push by carmakers to roll out new safety features was praised by the National Safety Council, who said that it was a welcome yet insufficient first step. “Automakers took a step in the right direction Wednesday, adding another layer of protection against these tragedies,” the council said. He added, “Automakers should move fast on their commitment and continue to collaborate on additional protections that can be provided to all our drivers.”
Ship Capsizes in Georgia
Golden Ray, a 656-foot cargo ship,
began to list heavily off the coast of Georgia on Sunday. By evening, the whole ship was laid over on its side as authorities worked to stabilize the ship so they could rescue four South Korean crew members who were onboard the vessel. Twenty of the 24 people onboard the ship were rescued by the Coast Guard and other agencies before a fire hindered the rescue mission. The missing crew members were in the engine room of the ship. “As smoke and flames began to appear, our crews, along with the Glynn County heavy rescue team, assessed that the situation was too risky to further go inside the vessel to attempt to locate the four individuals who remain missing at this time,” Capt. John Reed, commander of the Coast Guard Sector Charleston, said. Finally, on Monday, Coast Guard rescuers pulled the four trapped men from the capsized vessel, drilling into the hull’s steel plates to extract the crew members more than a day after their vessel overturned. All four men were alert and in good condition despite the ordeal. “Best day of my 16-year career,” Lt. Lloyd Heflin, who was coordinating the effort for the Coast Guard, wrote in a text message to The Associated Press. Three of the South Korean crew members came out in the midafternoon. The fourth man, who was trapped in a separate compartment, emerged three hours later. The ship, sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, was bound for Baltimore, where it was expected to arrive on Monday. It was carrying vehicles.
What’s Killing Americans? The five U.S. states with the highest death rates have an average death rate 49% higher than that of the five states with the lowest death rates, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics recently reported. The report, published last Thursday, found that in 2017, age-specific death rates for all age groups were higher in the top five states than in
those with lower death rates. It also found that age-adjusted death rates for chronic lower respiratory diseases and unintentional injuries for the states with the highest rates were almost doubled compared with the states with the lowest rates. The five states with the highest death rates in the country are Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. On the other hand, the five states with the lowest death rates in the nation are California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Minnesota, and New York. However, despite the disparity in numbers, the five leading causes of death for both the states with the highest and lowest death rates were heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, unintentional injuries, and stroke. In other words, wherever you live, these illnesses are prevalent. Dr. Jiaquan Xu, a National Center for Health Statistics researcher and author of the report, noted some interesting findings. “Alzheimer’s disease for California, one of the five lowest-rate states, was higher than the rates for Kentucky and West Virginia, two of the five lowest-rate states. California had a higher death rate from diabetes than Alabama. Hawaii had the highest death rate from influenza and pneumonia in the nation.” He added, “The findings in this report are important information for the health community to learn about inequalities in mortality between the two groups of the states and help them in their important work using such information.”
U.S. Best Cities to Live In When it comes to choosing a city to call home, every person and family has a different set of priorities and tastes. Still, there are some universal traits to a city that make it better than others, including safe streets, a strong economy, and affordability. Recently, 24/7 Wall St. created a weighted index of over two dozen measures from the U.S. Census Bureau, the FBI, and other sources to identify the best city to live in. It looked at all boroughs, census desig-

The Week In News nated places, cities, towns, and villages with at least 8,000 residents. The best cities to live in tend to have much in common beyond the index components. For one, these communities are often within commuting distance of a major metropolitan area. Close proximity to a major city provides residents with more access to job opportunities. Some of the best cities in the United States turned out to be just outside of Chicago, Los Angeles, and Houston. These metro areas are highly desirable places to live, but the downside is that they also tend to be very expensive. According to the report, West University Place in Texas, with a population of 15,477, is the best city to live in in the United States. The average household income there is more than $240K. In addition to entertainment and culture in nearby Houston, West University Place, which is a suburb of Houston, has a far greater concentration of restaurants, bars, fitness centers, museums, and theatre companies than is typical
nationwide. Beverly Hills, California, came in at number two in the nation. Pella, Iowa, nabbed spot number three. Montecito, California, and Grove City, Pennsylvania, rounded out the top five best cities to live in in the nation. University Park, Texas; Ladue, Missouri; Hanover, New Hampshire; Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin; and Le Mars, Iowa; came in at the next few spots on the list. And no, not one city in New York or New Jersey took the first 50 spots on the list. I guess they never visited the Five Towns.

expanded to include all public kindergartens in the city this year. Each student is automatically enrolled in Boston Saves. They can’t touch the $50 until after high school and can only be used for college or other job training. Parents can also earn incentive payments for the program. Families can earn up to an extra $65 from the city during the first year if they regularly contribute to the account. “Over 4,000 kindergartners today get $50 seed money,” explained Gosia Tomaszewska, who manages Boston Saves. It started as a pilot program three years ago in 11 schools. “We are giving people a tool and money, but really, what we’re trying to do is start parents and kids thinking about the future early on. What is a better way to invest in the future of Boston and Boston’s families than investing in our kids,” Tomaszewska said. The cost of Boston Saves is about $200,000 for the city each year. There are also contributions from the private sector and non-profits. The state is piloting a similar program that goes statewide next year.
restaurant,” a claim no one is disputing. “At Pick & Cheese we want to show that cheese and wine bars don’t have to be boring and can be enjoyed by everyone, whether you’re dropping in for a quick plate of British cheese and a glass of something unusual, or settling in for a cheese flight and a bottle of natural wine,” says Mathew Carver, founder of The Cheese Bar. “We’re looking forward to switching on the belt and loading her up with our pick of the country’s most exciting small producer cheeses.” After taking a seat at the belt, diners can pick whatever takes their fancy during the never-ending cheese parade, where plates are color-coded by price, or they follow a pre-selected “cheese flight.” “Off-belt dishes,” such as panfried angloumi and a four-cheese grilled sandwich, can be ordered directly to your chair. The restaurant, which is the brainchild of the team at the Cheese Bar, a restaurant in London’s Camden Market, also holds a specially curated wine list from natural wine retailers, Les Caves de Pyrene, that diners can pair with the cheeses. him as “the right Raul Ruiz for Congress.” “I grew up picking vegetables in the fields that feed America, dreaming up my own American Dream,” Ruiz, the Republican, said, adding that he later became a carpenter who started a business that employed hundreds. In his bio, the challenger writes that Congressman Ruiz and “radical liberals want to use handouts to keep people dependent on the government and rob them of their shot at the American Dream.” Will the real Raul Ruiz please stand up?
Breaking Scuba Records at 96 Voters in California may be seeing double when they head to the polls in 2020. U.S. congressman Raul Ruiz, a California Democrat, is facing a challenge for his seat by a Republican businessman named – wait for it – Raul Ruiz. The 47-year-old representative for the state’s 36th district, a Harvard-educated physician, has handily won re-election every two years since entering Congress in 2013. But the 2020 might prove to be complicated, especially if he faces an opponent with the same name. On Thursday his largely unknown challenger, who was homeless for a time, according to his website, released a campaign launch video, a 40-second online clip that identifies
A 96-year-old celebrated his birthday on Saturday by breaking his own record as the world’s oldest active scuba diver for the third year running, plunging to the depths of the equivalent of a 15-story building to explore a shipwreck off Cyprus. World War II veteran Ray Woolley, who turned 96 on August 28, plunged to a depth of 42.4 meters for 48 minutes, the event organizers said. He beat his previous record of 40.6 meters for 44 minutes. “It’s just unbelievable. I’ve been diving now for 59 years, and these are the sort of dives that you remember because there are so many divers with you,” Woolley said, of the other 47 divers who swam with him. “If I can still dive and my buddies are willing to dive with me, I hope I can do it again next year,” Woolley
said after the event. Woolley, who lives in Cyprus, was a radio operator in World War II. Has successively broken two previous records he held in 2017 and 2018. He is originally from Port Sunlight in northwest England.
A documentary on his life, “Life Begins at 90”, will be shown at the Bosnia-Herzegovina film festival in September. “I refuse to accept the fact that I’m getting old,” Woolley says in the trailer. Isn’t age just a number?

Known as “The Cabin,” it was demolished in 2015 after planning permission was granted to build a new structure. “The Cabin will not fail to impress you, from the moment you step into the grounds you feel like you have just entered a different land,” a spokesperson for agents Fine and Country said. “This spectacular waterside location offers a superb chance to purchase a development opportunity.” The land currently has approved planning permission for a three bedroom bungalow, including an openplan kitchen/living space, a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and a sunroom – all providing ample opportunity to take advantage of the surrounding scenery. For now, though, there’s only a lone bench taking in the scenery. The Cabin is available for $614,500 and will go up for public auction on October 2 in the Marriott Hotel Swansea Marina. By Rabbi Zvi Teichman
The son of the Holy Maggid of Kozhnitz tells of an ignorant villager who approached his saintly father with a question. He had learned the verse, You shall make for yourselves twisted threads (Tzitzis) on the four corners of, כסו־ תך, your garment. Uneducated and of ashkenazic descent he didn’t discern between the letter תand a ס, and he confused it with כסּוסך, rooted in the word סוס, for horse. He innocently queried whether a horse was obligated to wear Tzitzis! The Maggid graciously answered with a profound mystical interpretation. The mitzvah of Tzitzis is referenced twice in Torah. In Shelach it discusses ציצית, fringes. In Ki Seitzei these ‘fringes’ are called גדילים, literally ‘twisted threads’. Tzitzis refers to the loosely hanging strings while Gedilim pertain to the upper braided part that is bound together. The Tzitzis are associated with a ''בגד, garment, while Gedilim are attached to a ''כסות, literally a ‘covering’. Rav S.R. Hirsch teaches that there are two concepts embodied in the notion of ‘clothing’. A בגד, a garment’s primary purpose is to cover the shame of our nakedness and restore our dignity as humans. We cover the animal phase on the human body, to bring to mind the moral character of human beings. After being driven from Paradise we now must face the raw antagonism of a world presenting ‘thorns and thistles’, and protective clothing became necessary. This is the purpose of כסות, a ‘covering’, a layer of shelter against the ‘elements’ that endanger us. The בגדrepresents our moral calling for all times, carrying out the Jew-
ish mission for humanity. The כסות, emphasizes the applicability of this mission to every place independent of climate and conditions. Whatever, and in whatever isolation you may have to set your wandering foot... in ארבע כנפות, in every direction... you are to bear the same admonishment with you, to carry out the one same task wherever you may be. The two-fold meaning of clothing... veiling... and... covering... are also the two parts of Tzitzis... the freely hanging ends of the threads, symbolizing the free development of all elements of human nature, the sensual, the human and the divine, and the Gedil, these firmly bound threads constricted into a cord, symbolizing the submission of all that is sensual to all that is human and Jewish. The Arizal notes that ציצתis an acronym for צדיק יפריד ציציותיו תמיד, the righteous will always separate the strings, the first action we do before donning our Tzitzis. This emphasizes the first idea of attributing to G-d the full gamut of the free development of all elements of human nature: the sensual, the human and the divine. We then recite from Borchi Nafsh, י גדלת מאד-ד' אלה, G-d my Lord, You are very great. Rabbeinu Bechayei connects this sentiment to גדילים, for it is in these firmly bound threads constricted into a cord, symbolizing the submission of all that is sensual to all that is human and Jewish, that our reflected greatness lays. After asserting our awareness of all that is in His domain, we bind ourselves in service to Him in all our endeavors. It is customary to bury one in a Talis, as echoed in the prayer many add
daily: Just as I cover myself with a Talis in This World, so may I merit the rabbinical garb and a beautiful cloak in the World to Come in the Garden of Eden. Is it simply the wearing of a Talis that will merit the grandeur of heavenly garments in the World to Come? The son of the Maggid of Kozhnitz didn’t reveal his father’s response but offers his own. The body is merely a כסות, a covering for our נשמה, our soul, like the horse that serves the rider. The Zohar describes the utility of our physical self to express words of Torah and Tefilla as סוסוון, ‘horses’ that carry us on high. Every facet of our life, when submitted loyally to His will, transports us to the Heavens. Our ‘greatness’ lay in the גדילים, in our constricting and binding ourselves and all of our assets to His will and mission. The manner in which we ‘don’ the message of the Talis defines the level by which our גוף, our כסות, our proverbial סוס, horse, will transform into a garment of splendorous spirituality in Gan Eden. Several years ago, while praying at the Kotel, I participated in a Minyan that was led by a father of a child who was donning his Tefillin for the very first time. The proud father davened inspiringly as several of his other younger children lovingly prayed at his side. I noticed that the Talis he wore was tattered, worn and yellowed with age. I wondered whether he was poor and couldn’t afford a new one. Since I was departing that day and wouldn’t need my Talis until I returned to the States, I offered my relatively new Talis as a gift, as I had two others at home. I waited as he went up to the Wall after the davening to pour out his soul to the Almighty, no doubt in gratitude for the celebration of the day, together with a fervent prayer for his son’s future success. When he finished I mustered the courage, first to tell him
how touched I was by the special relationship he had with his adorable children, then sharing that after noticing the condition of his Talis it would be a great privilege to present him with a fresher one. He smiled warmly after hearing of my offer but politely declined. He then said something that totally blew me away. He first told me that he too, had two new Taleisim at home. I inquired as to why he chose on this special day to wear his old one. He responded, “This one is very dear to me. Do you know how many times this Talis has accompanied me? It was with me in Lebanon, in Gaza and many other missions in between!” That dilapidated Talis wasn’t just any Talis, it was a cloak from Gan Eden. It wasn’t just the Tallis that glowed but the beautiful and inspired Neshama of this special soul that rode high to the heavens on the royal steed of his body! ...והיה לכם לציצית וראיתם אתו )(פרשת ציצית אלולis embedded in the first letters of the words in this verse. We are approaching the Day of Judgment, a day when our very lives are hanging in balance. Are we wild stallions who gallivant unrestrained and casually go through the motions of wearing a Talis as if it were a warming blanket on the back of a sleeping horse? Or do we contemplate the profundity of its message and commit our souls and bodies to being bound to His will in every challenge in life? The last letters of these words that allude to Elul, לכם לציצית וראיתם אתו, spell out ממָ וֶת, ִ from death. Our lives are dependent on infusing this reality to our consciousness and lives. May we wrap ourselves fully in His embrace, so that we may be worthy of a year filled with blessing and life!

his week’s Torah portion deals with many different issues of human behavior and family relations. We are all aware that the relationships between parents and children, as well as between other relatives in the same family, are often difficult ones and fraught with potential danger, frustration, and even tragedy. People within a family are very capable of disliking and even hating one another despite their biological and social connection. This is because in
the basic family structure there exists a bond of love between the members of the family that is natural and quite strong. And any time strong love is present, the possibility of strong hate always lurks in the background. Precisely because children love their parents, they feel justified in holding them to unrealistic standards of behavior and attitude. And since parents often fall short of such absolute perfection, the resentment towards them can become so great

as to lead to awful family disputes. Hard statistics reveal that most murders occur between perpetrators and victims who are related or know each other well. These family members have experienced disappointment and often complain of severe mistreatment. There are many current theories as to how to properly raise children and create tranquility and harmony within the family unit. But, as is true in almost all areas of life, one size does not fit all, and it is difficult to fit each separate case into any general rule. Because of this, it is obvious that every family must sort through relationships and affairs individually.
when no logical or rational solution is present or possible. It is difficult for us in our time, when we have unlocked so many doors regarding the mysteries of science, technology and medicine, to have to admit that there are basic human problems that exist within family relationships that we are powerless to solve on our own. Later in the Torah we will read that that there are many hidden things in human life that only Heaven can deal with. We can only do the best that we can, to the extent that we are physically, emotionally and intellectually able. There is no question that this limitation upon our omnipotence is very frustrating especially to mod-
It is difficult for us in our time to have to admit that there are basic human problems that exist within family relationships that we are powerless to solve on our own.
Very rarely, if ever, can any outside source, no matter how wise or professional, solve the problems and workings of the family unit. From the narrative that appears regarding the rebellious son – a narrative that according to one opinion in the Talmud is to be treated only as a metaphor – it is clear that we are being taught that there are instances
ern humans who believe that they are capable of everything. By realizing that, paradoxically, we can accomplish more than we thought possible in times of difficulty, eventually we know that we must rely upon the G-d Who infuses us with life to help us solve all difficult situations and to accept G-d’s will. A Taste of Sderot During a Rocket Attack By Eli Pollak
M
y name is Eli Pollack, and in addition to being the CEO of United Hatzalah, I am also a volunteer first responder and EMT. On a recent Sunday night, I was visiting the southern town of Netivot to spend time with the local volunteers and help facilitate some new projects for our teams in the Gaza periphery region. I
was in the middle of a meeting when we heard about the rocket attacks in the nearby city of Sderot. For me, the surge of adrenaline and fear was just a small taste of what the residents of these areas have been going through for the past 18 years since the first rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip against the residents of southern Israel began.

I wrapped up the meeting and left Netivot heading towards Sderot to see if I could lend a hand and help in any way. For me, a resident of Jerusalem, being present during a rocket attack is not a common thing, but there isn’t anyone in Israel who doesn’t know the feeling of shared dread when these attacks occur. As I was driving towards Sderot, the emergency application on my communication device alerted me to an emergency in my area. The incident was taking place at the Beit Gedi intersection. The alert said that there was a life in danger inside a Nissan vehicle. I
asked her where she lived. “In Sderot,” she said. As we drove, I tried to help her calm down by using various breathing techniques and the training I learned from our Psychotrauma volunteers who deal with these types of reactions all of the time. Unfortunately, I didn’t have too much success. I did, however, succeed at bringing her home to the loving embrace of her husband and children who were worried about her. They hadn’t heard from her since the rocket attack. This whole experience was incredibly difficult for me as it brought home just how much pain the people living

had no idea where the intersection was so I put it into Waze. When I picked my head up, I saw a Nissan pulled over on the side of the road. I pulled up behind the vehicle and approached the car. Inside the car was a woman who was suffering a severe stress reaction to the attack that had just occurred. “I can’t drive,” she told me. She was in a severe state of shock. “Please take me home,” she asked me as she broke into tears. I didn’t think twice. I got into her car, and I began driving her home. I

I am glad that I was able to provide a little bit of help in this instance and I am proud of all of the volunteers that we have in Sderot and throughout the region who not only live with the fear for their own families, but manage to put it aside and rush out to help others even when they themselves are under the same threat as the people they treat are. It is simply incredible.

The Attention Deficit Disorder That Everyone is Ignoring By Hylton I. Lightman, MD, DCH (SA), FAAP
Y
ou know the scene. Mommy or Tatty is pushing the stroller down the bundle of joy inside the stroller. One hand of the parent pushes the stroller while the other hand holds that seemingly permanent appendage called the cellphone. Something so engaging must be on that piece of glorified plastic because rather than interacting with the child, the parent is preoccupied with whatever is happening on that screen in their hand. Parents will do this under many circumstances, including while walking in a crosswalk, despite traffic (which is something I don’t get). This is an attention deficit disorder. It is epidemic. It does not have to happen. You might think it is funny, especially when you admit to yourself (albeit privately) that you too are part of this raging epidemic. Sadly, both you – the parent – and your child are suffering, and the consequences will be long term. Allow me to explain. Let’s start with your child. You, my dear parent, are one of the most important people and “influencers” in your precious child’s life. Prior to birth, you are already bonding with this precious gift from G-d. This baby is born knowing your voices and so much more. He relies on you for everything, from food and shelter to love and so much more. One of the biggest gifts you can give your child is stimulation. When you interact with your baby – including cooing at them and making faces –
you are stimulating him. This means that you are arousing his sense of sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. Stimulating your baby will help to improve your baby’s attention, memory, curiosity, and nervous system development. In addition, stimulating your baby’s senses will enable him to reach developmental milestones faster. It will also aid in the development of motor skills. Frontloading this during the first year of life is the time when your baby’s brain is growing at the fastest rate it ever will. You are beginning the process of helping your baby to develop a sense of “self.” Babies are marvelous to observe, and they provide endless delight. But I am advocating for interacting with your baby because, in this case, interaction supersedes observation. Just don’t plunk him down in a playpen and walk away. Gather age-appropriate toys and get down on the floor and play with him. You can make these inanimate toys come alive for your baby by giving them voices and showing how to play with them. By doing so, you are helping to nurture your child’s imagination. Imagination, which the Webster’s dictionary defines as “the ability to form a picture in your mind of something that you have not yet seen or experienced: the ability to think of new things,” fosters social and cognitive development. Imagination is the door to possibilities. It is the intersection of creativity, ingenuity, and thinking outside the box. Through imagination and creative play, your child learns
about the world. This helps to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in children. Try not to just plop your baby in the stroller and start power walking and feel you’ve achieved something. Okay, you have – you got out of the house and you’re doing something positive for yourself and that is no small thing. But let’s try to maximize the moment to its fullest potential. Your baby should face you, Mommy or Daddy, especially a little one. He can watch you and your gestures. You can smile at him; babies love when parents smile at them. When you have your baby’s full attention – which is but a fleeting moment – you can accomplish a lot, provided you are tuned in and interacting with him. Babies are naturally curious, and when you satisfy your baby’s curiosity, he will naturally want more. Why? Because he is experiencing pleasure! Once he experiences something in which he finds pleasure, he will endeavor to learn more about it. Therefore, you, Imma and Abba, are key in nourishing your baby’s thirst for knowledge. You should seek to provide your baby with opportunities to experience different stimuli to pique his curiosity and to encourage him to learn more and more. The child-parent bond can be an antidote to the anxiety that abounds among children today. 1 in 8 children suffer from anxiety and the reasons are multi-factorial. Some fears are built into the cycle of life. For example, normal development includes the stranger anxiety phase
which usually sets in at about 7 months of life when your baby recognizes familiar faces like Mommy and Tatty, and then avoids the unfamiliar. As healthy attachment to parents grows, separation anxiety, as manifested through crying and sadness, emerges and then improves over the next several years. Generally, most children are past this stage by the end of kindergarten. Although I could take this article and further describe today’s anxiety, I’m not going in that direction as I’ve already written about it (“Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My! When did we become so anxious?”). Rather, I am underscoring the important role that parents, especially mothers, have in being with their children, talking with them, hearing their hopes and fears, processing information, and just plain enjoying them without the cellphone, iPad, and other such distractions. When parents are tuned into their children properly, anxiety can lessen and so much positive can happen. It requires work. But what in life is meaningful that comes without work, hard work? Parents stand so much to gain by properly interacting with their babies, nurturing and raising them through the toddler and early school years, through middle school and then the roller coaster called adolescence and so forth. We parents want to know that we have done right by our children. Not for one moment am I saying to strive for perfection. Not one of us is a per-

When you know that you are doing your best to maximize your child’s imagination and developing his sense of self, there is no greater feeling (including exhaustion). Ideally, we want to be connected to our children at all stages of life. The earlier it happens, the better for all. I know I’m dating myself (by about 50 years) but Harry Chapin had a song called “The Cat’s in the Cradle.” It was inspired by several relationships between fathers and sons which Chapin knew about firsthand in which the parent is busy, busy, busy and by the time he is ready for a meaningful relationship with his child, the child – who is now a grown adult – has no time for the parent. There’s a rather poignant line when the parent reaches out to his busy, busy, busy adult child. That child is too busy to see his father who then says, “I realized he’s grown up just like me.” How sad. Everyone loses, and the damage is irreversible. We have all seen one-year-old chil-
dren who are facile and quick on cellphones. They use their tiny fingers to swipe until they find the videos they want. I don’t find this amusing. Too many parents capitulate to the screaming child who requests/demands the
development. Perhaps this is the root of increased anxiety among parents and children today. It is Elul, the month of introspection as we prepare for Yom HaDin. There is

a subtle reference in the Torah portion about the arei miklat, cities of refuge, to Elul. What’s the connection between the cities of refuge and Elul? The cities of refuge were places where people who murdered unintentionally stayed and lived and learned
Torah. The person’s rebbe came. The Kohen Gadol was involved. Something in the perpetrator’s avodas Hashem went awry, and the ir miklat offered an opportunity for rehabilitation. Elul is our ir miklat, our city of refuge as the Jewish year is in its final stretch. It is an opportunity, a gift to each of us to look at ourselves and determine what’s open in our own avodas Hashem. Not being fully engaged with our children as Hashem would like us to be is one area in which to work over the next several weeks. Imagine how this world could be if we would fully appreciate Hashem’s blessings and gifts and give back to Him? As always, daven. Thank you to Dovid Chaim Hoffman for his thoughts on this. You gotta be kidding Every day an Israeli collector sells pretzels at the entrance to the Old City for 1 shekel per pretzel. Every day a nice woman passes by and gives the collector 1 shekel, even though she doesn’t take a pretzel. This goes on for several months. One day, after the woman puts a shekel in the bowl, the colle ctor screams out at her to come back. The woman says, “You know I never take a pretzel, why are you calling me back?” The collector replies, “I just wanted to let you know that the price went up to 2 shekels per pretzel.”

Dating Dialogue
What Would You Do If… Moderated by Jennifer Mann, LCSW of The Navidaters
Dear Navidaters,
I’m 26 and recently engaged to a great guy who I’ll call Eric. Eric and I both went to more modern schools and after our time in Israel we became more frum, on our own, before meeting.
B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M
While we were dating we discussed everything there was to discuss – hashkafa, money, careers, goals, kids, family, our values. We went to premarital counseling because we were told it’s a really helpful thing for all couples to do before they’re engaged. And it was. As the wedding is getting closer I find myself questioning some of my hashkafos. I want to be frum and cover hair, knees and elbows, but I’m starting to get nervous about sending our kids, G-d willing, one day to a more yeshivish school. It’s not my comfort level. My brothers had a morah in first grade, not a rebbe. I think of the modern orthodox sleepaway camp I went to, and I can’t imagine my kids not experiencing that lifestyle. I started thinking back to those days and remembering the frummer families at camp; the moms dressed truly tziniusdik on visiting day. Maybe I can fit in in my old lifestyle with my new values. I want to be clear that I think both ways are beautiful and I don’t want to start a debate about which way is right or wrong, chas v’shalom. So, is this something that is insignificant that I should look past? Or, is this something I should be bringing up to Eric? I’m not even sure how I feel, other than bad for having these thoughts. What if I tell him and he breaks up with me? That would devastate me. I’m having a lot of anxiety over this. Thank you for reading this and doing what you do. I really appreciate your help.

The Panel The Rebbetzin Rebbetzin Faigie Horowitz, M.S. t seems that you are envisioning your future family life as very similar to what you experienced. You see a comfort level and beauty in that, and that’s a very healthy thing. In other words, you probably had a wholesome childhood and are imagining replicating that on some level in your future. But you and Eric have moved to a more halachically observant and hashkafically different place, hence your discomfort, fears and worries. You are sensing a possible conflict between a pleasant, positive model you experienced and where you are now. This is worrisome to you. You are starting to question your own beliefs, hashkafos, and commonality with Eric. You may even think that you are not as committed to the planned lifestyle you shared until now. You don’t understand yourself and why you have these feelings. This is scary. Your commonality with Eric may be superficial and you may not be on the same page. Open up to Eric and with Eric to the premarital counselor. Bring up your both your pasts and specifically what was attractive, wholesome, and positive. You will also talk about various Orthodox cultures and people whom you respect who are successfully raising families in diverse communities. You will go beyond talking about other people’s values, practices, and challenges to discuss the religious evolution or transitions that couples go through together. And the conversations will begin to focus on the possibility of growth, change, choice, and transition in a marriage. This is a very healthy thing even if many engaged couples do not face this. Many couples deal with this later on when there are children and have several years together behind them. Then they need to confront differing directions.
I
You two have several advantages over these couples. You have been in premarital counseling and therefore have learned and will learn more about yourselves, your values, and your relationship. You have learned some communication skills and seen that negotiation is an acquired important skill. Third, you are dealing with the what ifs now. Sharing these thoughts with Eric with the help of a skilled facilitator will probably strengthen your bond. Don’t bail before continuing to communicate. Plumb the depths of your thoughts and the breadth of your concerns. You may learn a lot about each other and yourselves as a couple. The conversations will continue and your growth as a unit will probably be solidified. You will probably agree on some parameters, a model for family living, a family spiritual guide, and regular reassessments. That’s healthy and good.
The Mother Sarah Schwartz Schreiber, P.A. ow I’m really worried about you. You say you’ve discussed everything there was to discuss: hashkafa – check. Money – check. Careers – double check. Goals. Kids. Family. Values…. But what about baby names? I mean, Shprintza and Zanvil may be venerable names in your family; still Eric may not be a fan. And paint colors? So many shades of gray; it may be worth devoting one therapy session to Decorating Our Pad 101. My point? Not to poke fun at your comprehensive – “covering all bases” – preparation for marriage but so sorry to inform you: all the talk, the deep meaningful conversations, the give-and-take practiced in front of your therapist will not guarantee that – sometime, somewhere down the Avenue of Matrimonial Bliss – you guys won’t

argue over some really critical and trivial issues (yeshiva preferences, overnight camp choices, yarmulke fabrics and sleeve lengths). The purpose of therapy was not to review the Heavy Categories (see above) and give you each a star in the category where you’re both compatible. If you weren’t given the tools with which to communicate and negotiate respectfully, you missed the point of the process. It’s time to turn right around and head back to your therapist’s office. This time without Eric. Because with all your stated concerns about your new values, summer camp, and rebbes vs. morahs, you sound apprehensive and downright terrified about getting married. Spend the time, just you and a qualified therapist, and explore the true basis of your anxiety. Without Eric present, you can speak openly and freely about the thoughts you are afraid to articulate to yourself and your chosson. Rest assured, by airing your concerns in a therapeutic setting, you are not compromising your relationship with Eric; you are gaining valuable insight and confidence that will surely benefit your future shalom bayis. And if Eric asks, you can always say, “Another gown fitting.” He’ll understand.
The Shadchan Michelle Mond hank you for bringing up this very important question. If you gave Eric an impression of your hashkafos that are no longer valid it is halachically obligatory for you to communicate this change. Do some couples start off at the same point religiously and eventually change together? Yes, absolutely, and in this case there is no problem because they change in unison. Do some couples start off at the same place and one veers more to the left leaving the other at a place more to
T
Don’t bail before continuing to communicate.
the right? Yes, absolutely as well, and this is what can start to rock the proverbial relation-ship. However, that is an unfortunate example which happens over time, and could not have been foreseen. Your husband currently believes he is marrying a woman who has a certain set of hashkafos and beliefs ingrained in her, which translates into a very specific Torahdik lifestyle. If you marry Eric without telling him your hesitancy, you are being over on geneivas da’as (stealing personal knowledge). Practically speaking, it surely does sound a bit premature to start thinking about your children when you are not married yet. However, think of it this way: Do you plan on waking up when your child is five to discuss with your husband your deep intent to send your children to the co-ed modern orthodox day school rather than a yeshiva elementary? Do you intend to wait until your child is 15 to start discussing with your husband the possibility of sending your child to a modern co-ed sleepaway camp when your husband dons a black hat and attends a yeshivishe shteibel? What I’m saying is, doing so is what we would call in the real world: blindsiding someone. When it comes to long-term religious compatibility, it’s not just okay to look the part but to internally be the part you play. You ask if you should worry about Eric breaking up with you due to these inconsistencies. To this I answer, if you truly have such different outlooks regarding religious observance, a

to know this. Maybe he’s had some of the same feelings himself. Maybe he loves you in a way that allows him to be accepting of you – no matter what. But having an honest conversation with Eric is definitely the right way to go, in my opinion. Together you may be able to figure out a plan B should you change at some point or maybe, just maybe, you’ll both ultimately decide that getting married to one another might not be the best ultimate decision. policy.” Covering up your feelings can only be sustained for so long. Better to share them now, before getting married, than after. Though you sound uncertain which way you will ultimately land, there is already enough doubt in your mind to suggest that a change of heart is not absolutely impossible in terms of how modern or not you ultimately want to be. Eric needs
here is a lot at stake here. If you tell Eric the truth about how you have been feeling and what you have been thinking, he may break up with you. And if you don’t tell him, you will be preventing a truly authentic relationship from forming. Though a husband or wife may grow in a new or different way, and we certainly cannot predict every foreseeable outcome, withholding second-guessing your hashkafa is no way to start a marriage. Eric deserves to know. I don’t believe this is insignificant. Equally as significant, separate and distinct from the future of your relationship is the fact that you are questioning the things you thought you wanted for yourself and your future family. You need to continue exploring and do some deep soul searching. Typically, the way a couple wants to raise their children is agreed upon at the outset of a marriage. Whether you remain together or you break up and start dating again, you need clarity for yourself. Find your process toward your clarity. You and Eric already are incredibly adept at practicing communi-
cation and authenticity. I know this because you are in premarital therapy and discussing all there is to discuss. Schedule a time to have this conversation. It won’t be an easy conversation to have, but I believe that ultimately you may feel better. You may want to speak to a trusted loved one, a rebbetzin or a therapist about your current thoughts, by yourself. You need to know if you are feeling nostalgic for your youth and fond memories as you look toward marriage and truly stepping into the hashkafic values you chose as an adult, or if you are truly questioning the lifestyle you thought you wanted. Sharing our truth with a partner does one of two things. It will either take your relationship to the next level and you will feel closer than before (lies and withholding truths divide and create walls), or the couple breaks up because that truth doesn’t work for one or both partners. Whatever happens, by telling the truth you are allowing yourself room for growth.
Being in a relationship that doesn’t allow room for personal growth and change may eventually become tiring, frustrating, sad, and lonely. If Eric breaks up with you because of your recent realizations, then please know that he is not the one for you, and you are not the right one for him. You will be deeply sad for some time, but I hope that you will feel content in the knowledge that you did the right thing for both Eric and yourself. And as cliché as this may sound, better to have this conversation and deal with this situation before you are married, than after.

The period of adolescence is confusing both for adolescents and for parents. There are so many changes that take place during this enormous transition from childhood to adulthood that parents are often left bewildered as to whether their child is displaying normal adolescent behavior or not. One of the major changes is in the area of social interactions. Social interactions of children and adolescents are vastly different which can lead to a complete reorganization of a teen’s peer group and close friends. It is even possible to have two children who were the closest of friends only to drift away from each other in adolescence and become nothing more that acquaintances. In this article, we will outline some of the salient features of adolescent development and how it relates to their social interactions. • Identity – During adolescence, teens are trying to develop a personal identity and a secure sense of self. As they develop their sense of a unique self, they look for friends that conform with their burgeoning identity. Childhood friendships are usually not based on a common identity, since children don’t really have a sense of personal identity. Rather, childhood playmates tend to be based on engaging in shared activities. This kind of a friendship does not have staying power for adolescence as each of them develops their own unique interests, attitudes, and values. We all know that, “birds of a feather flock together,” but sometimes those feathers are shed and the new feathers could be totally different! • Independence – Adolescents want to start making their own decisions and acting based on their own thought process. Sometimes, the social ties of childhood make them feel encumbered as they attempt to separate from their
childhood bonds and become more of an independent person. This can also be a factor in their drifting away from their childhood friends. • Cliques – For better or for worse, during adolescence it is common to develop cliques of five to ten individuals. The intense connection with their clique might not leave room for old friendships. • Variations in rate of maturity – Teens often seek out friends who are on a similar maturity levels. Children mature at different rates. It occurs frequently that you have two ninth-graders of the same age, where one looks like an adult and the other looks like a child. Variation in maturity can also occur on a psychological level. This might be a factor in two childhood friends not being as close as they emerge into adolescence. • Distance from each other – The period of adolescence is one of intense social interactions. Very often, one’s childhood friends are not in the same Yeshiva or school and therefore they drift apart as they develop new social circles. Growing up is hard and confusing. When friends drift apart it can also be a little sad. Parents play a pivotal role in this process as they need to identify which changes are normal and which changes are problematic. Parents who are confused should not hesitate to seek out help and guidance from a professional who is trained and experienced with adolescent development. This is a service of Relief Resources. Political Crossfire
Trump’s Personal Diplomacy in China is No Substitute for Clear Policy By David Ignatius

OCTOBER 29, 2015 | The Jewish Home
s we move into the fall, there’s one overriding foreign-policy priority for America: find a strategy to deal with a rising China that protects U.S. interests but doesn’t subvert the global economy. China is the challenge of our time, and the risks of getting it wrong are enormous. Huawei, the Shenzen-based communications powerhouse, argues in a slick new YouTube video that its critics want to create a new Berlin Wall. That’s not true – Huawei and other Chinese tech companies have allegedly been stealing intellectual property for years and are finally being held accountable – but there’s a real danger that America will talk itself into a digital Cold War that lasts for decades. We’re at a crossroads: at a conference on U.S.-China relations last month at the University of California, San Diego, a Chinese participant offered a blunt prediction about the future: “We think we are heading toward a partial decoupling of our relationship.” Trump administration officials argue that China has been decoupling itself – denying access to Western firms, even as America and its allies provided technology, training and market access. But what comes next? Trump administration officials hope that prog-
ress toward a trade deal may happen at last, now that a meeting with a senior Chinese official has been set for October. But Myron Brilliant, who runs the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s international programs, cautions, “There’s a trust deficit between Washington and Beijing that needs to be restored before there’s progress.” President Trump reiterated last Wednesday that the administration plans to deny Huawei access to American technology. “It’s a national security concern,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “Huawei is a big concern of our military, of our intelligence agencies, and we are not doing business with Huawei.” That leaves a little wiggle room, but not much. White House officials tell me the Chinese are mistaken if they think the administration is seeking to cripple China technologically. Officials say their goal isn’t a rerun of the anti-Soviet strategy of containment, but something more flexible. One administration official says his colleagues sometimes refer to this still-unnamed strategy simply as “the noun.” The Trump administration’s problem is that it has gutted the national security process that could devise a systematic plan for dealing with China. Instead, policy is highly personalized, and shaped by Trump’s erratic
decision-making style. “President Trump is our desk officer on China,” says Michael Pillsbury, an informal White House adviser on Asia policy. Strange as it sounds, that’s probably accurate. This administration’s sharp policy debates on China strategy are exacerbated because there’s no decision-making process to resolve them. On one side are China hawks like White House adviser Peter Navarro; on the other are would-be deal-makers like Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. In the middle is Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who seems to have an instinct for where Trump will eventually land. “On no issue is the lack of a policy process more visible or dramatic than China,” says Kurt Campbell, who oversaw Asia policy in the Obama administration. He contrasts how the presidents of the world’s two superpowers spent the last weeks of summer. President Xi Jinping met with top party officials at a beach resort and emerged with a new honorific, the “People’s Leader.” Trump spent those weeks in very public and sometimes self-destructive Twitter barrages, at home and abroad. Trump has a simple four-word summary of his China baseline, notes one administration official: “Xi is my
friend.” Personal diplomacy has its uses, but it’s no substitute for clear policy. Framing a real China strategy should be Job 1 for Trump (and his successor in 2021, if he’s defeated). Pillsbury described the scope of the challenge in the title of his 2016 book, “The Hundred-Year Marathon.” He told me this week: “We need to change the trajectory that we’re on now. That means running faster and slowing them down.” That’s a good formulation, but both goals require disciplined U.S. policy, something in short supply. Making good decisions about China (and, implicitly, about the future of global technology) requires a sound U.S. policymaking structure. The best idea I’ve heard is a bipartisan bill introduced this year by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., to create a new “Office of Critical Technologies and Security” to oversee decisions about China and other key countries. Trump was right to take the China trade and technology problem more seriously than his predecessors. But the time for Twitter diplomacy and deals with “my friend” Xi is over. U.S. moves on this chessboard should be guided by clear planning, not whim. (c) 2019, Washington Post Writers Group

Dirshu Days Before Rosh Hashanah, Daf HaYomi B’Halacha to Embark On Chelek Hei, Hilchos Pesach By Chaim Gold Dirshu’s Daf HaYomi B’Halacha program is completing the difficult halachos of Eiruven and moving on to hilchos Pesach. Perhaps it is no coincidence that the beginning of hilchos Pesach coincides with the yahrzeit of the Chofetz Chaim. The Dirshu Daf HaYomi B”Halacha program is devoted to learning a daily page of the Chofetz Chaim’s Mishnah Berurah and a daily portion of one of the Chofetz Chaim’s mussar sefarim. Certainly, the zechus of the Chofetz Chaim is an integral component in ensuring that the Daf HaYomi B’Halacha has grown beyond belief with thousands of shiurim and many tens of thousands of participants all over the world. “Now is an opportune time to join the Daf HaYomi B’Halacha program and complete most of the halachos of Pesach in advance of next Pesach,” said Rabbi Shlomo Rozenstein, Dirshu’s Director of Public Relations. “This is the second machzor of the Daf HaYomi B’Halacha program. About seven years ago, the first time we started hilchos Pesach, many new participants joined. Chelek Daled, which is primarily devoted to eiruven, had been viewed by some as a difficult undertaking. Once, we reached Chelek Hei and hilchos Pesach, however, many more joined. We anticipate a tremendous bump in enrollment this

year with the start of hilchos Pesach on 26 Elul/September 26, just days before Rosh Hashanah. What a wonderful kabbalah to undertake in advance of Rosh Hashanah and in honor of the Chofetz Chaim’s yahrtzeit.” Indeed, Dirshu’s special, Fifth Annual International Yom Limud and Tefillah will be held on Tuesday, 24 Elul/September 2, the day before the completion of Chelek Daled. Yidden throughout the world will gather to recite specific perakim of Tehillim and learn segments from the two seminal seforim written by the Chofetz Chaim, the Mishnah Berurah and the Sefer Shmiras Haloshon.

The Yom Limud and Tefillah, under the auspices of Dirshu and its kiruv arm, Acheinu, is designed to reach out with a message of achdus to all Jews from across the spectrum and at all levels of observance, promoting Torah learning and tefillah. “Halacha is the Ikker” “Halacha is the ikker,” were the words of HaGaon HaRav Dovid Feinstein, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim and one of the senior poskim of our generation, when asked what his father Rav Moshe would have said about a daily halacha learning program such as the Daf HaYomi B’Halacha. One prominent Rosh Yeshiva, upon his visit to a Dirshu testing site, observed hundreds of people diligently taking tests on halachah and mussar, and exclaimed, “Can one imagine what simcha there is in shomayim?! Can one imagine the nachas that the heilige Chofetz Chaim and the heilige Rav Yisroel Salanter, founder of the Mussar Movement, must be having, when they look down and see thousands of people from all walks of life learning halachah and mussar?! The tens of thousands of lomdei Daf HaYomi B’Halacha comprise an army; an army of soldiers declaring, ‘My day will be one in which I encounter
Hashem Yisborach every second!’” More than a decade ago, the Posek Hador, HaGaon HaRav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, zt”l, encouraged the hanhala of Dirshu to create halacha programs whereby lomdei Torah would be encouraged to learn, understand and know halacha l’maaseh, practical halacha. Over the course of the years, lomdei Dirshu in both its Kinyan Halacha and Daf HaYomi B’Halacha programs have followed through on Rav Elyashiv’s guidance and have wrought a transformation in the Torah world. With the completion of Chelek Daled, Hilchos Eiruven and the commencement of Chelek Hei, Hilchos Peasch, Daf HaYomi B’Halacha learners will now be able to learn the entire hilchos Pesach. Fleeing This World for the ‘World of Hashem’! Perhaps, the discerning remarks of the Sar HaTorah, HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, can serve as the greatest catalyst to start learning hilchos Pesach with the Daf HaYomi B’Halacha. He recently said, “In our generation, the generation of ikvesah d’Meshicha, there is a great tumah, impurity in the world. The power of the yetzer hara in this world is greater than it ever was. That is why we must flee from ‘this world’ and enter ‘the world of Hashem’. What is the ‘world of Hashem’? The ‘world of Hashem’ is the daled amos of halacha.” Whereas some of the Dirshu programs cater to those who are able to devote a considerable part of their day to learning, the Daf HaYomi B’Halacha program is for everyone. Now, right before Rosh Hashanah, is an optimum time to join and begin Chelek Hei. Learning daily halacha with a structured program will have a transformative impact on your life. What are you waiting for!? To join Daf HaYomi B’Halacha please call, 888-5-Dirshu, or e-mail, info@kolleldirshu.org.

hances are good that sometime soon, you’ll find yourself in front of a football game. Love it or loathe it, from now through early 2020, the game will dominate the airwaves, to the point where, if you can’t sleep at 4a.m., you can find an ESPN channel somewhere featuring a bunch of aging ex-jocks droning on about their fantasy teams. (If that doesn’t put you back to sleep….) Pro football is like a shark, relentlessly prowling for more: more passing, more scoring, more replays, more concussions. Many fans, turned off by the NFL’s 24-hour Hype-o-Matic, have turned their eyes to the college game. This is especially true for schools still paying lip service to the ideal of amateurism. Alumni and students alike thrill to classic sweatshirt-weather matchups from “The Game” between Harvard and Yale, all the way down to the “Rocking Chair Classic” between “little Ivy” rivals Hamilton and Middlebury. This season, college programs are facing off across the neutral zone from some new patterns at the IRS. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 takes a handful of shots at college
sports. And while it may not be the end of the professionalism creeping into college sports, it might be the end of the beginning: • The new higher standard deductions mean millions fewer donors will be itemizing deductions. That means they won’t get to write off their dona-
tackles deductions for those gifts entirely. Motivations matter! But here’s something to ponder. The first wave of “Varsity Blues” parents who pled guilty to bribing a crooked counselor to get their underachieving kids into prestigious schools are about to go to jail for their crimes. Yet parents who

tions. So far, that hasn’t affected giving: the National Philanthropic Trust reports that Americans upped their total giving by 0.7% in 2018, with 14% going to education. But when the next recession inevitably blitzes, we’ll see if losing that deduction cramps giving. • Adding insult to injury, it used to be that boosters could deduct 80% of any gifts that included the right to buy athletic tickets. The new law
give money directly to the schools to get their underachievers admitted can still deduct their gifts. • Nonprofits owe a new 21% excise tax on salaries over $1 million they pay to their five highest-compensated employees. That’s a helmet-tothe-head hit on college sports — in 31 states, the highest-paid public employee is a college football coach. Alabama football coach Nick Saban will make $8.2 million more this year
than Alabama governor Kay Ivey. (In all fairness, Saban’s probably going to have a better season.) • There’s a new 1.4% excise tax on investment income for about two dozen private schools with endowments topping $500,000 per student. Opponents see this as a direct shot at those institutions, which have been mocked as tax-free hedge funds with universities attached. Harvard alone manages $35 billion — more than the GDP of Bahrain. (Fun fact: Harvard football has won twelve national championships, although you’ll have to go back to the leather-helmeted 1920 season for that last title). Don’t let any of these changes keep you from enjoying the game. Your favorite schools will find ways to adjust to the new laws, just like we do. So pour yourself a crisp bourbon and cider, grab your preppiest down vest, and take up your team’s fight song. We’ll be guarding the tax line for you!
