Dear Readers, Why is it that we have this almost hypnotic urge to look at the news? Bad news, terrible news, kvetchy news and even fake news. Almost anything becomes interesting as long as it’s not part of our lives. We can be blessed with health, a kind heart, good friends, a spouse, children, yet we don’t have the same natural thrill reflecting on these like when we read about someone else. We can probably blame it on that age-old adversary, the yetzer hara. This yetzer hara is a genius in knowing exactly where to put up a fight. He knows full well that each one of us knows what’s right and what’s wrong in our lives, what needs improvement and what’s needs strengthening. So, he came up with a simple solution: get us to focus on everyone else’s lives. Chaim should be learning more, Velvel should be more of a mentch, and Bracha should stop being late! The reality is the opposite. The only thing that matters is what’s happening in our lives. And in our lives, everything matters. If we shared a kind word with someone. If we didn’t have the last word in a disagreement. If we understood what we learned a bit better. Each and every thought, speech, or deed means everything to our Father in heaven and indeed changes the world for good. This is easier said than felt, but the joy of Sukkos allows us to rise above some of the nitty-gritty and leap into a world of clarity, truth and eternal messages. May the joy of Sukkos carry us until the truest joy mankind has known; when our Creator will remove His mask, revealing the strings behind the puppets, bringing all existence into harmony. Wishing you a wonderful Shabbos and a most joyful z’man simchaseinu! Shalom

Baltimore County Schools Release Phased Reopening Plan By: Staff Reporter BaltimoreJewishLife.com/Jeff Cohn
B
altimore County Public Schools released a plan Thursday to return students to school in phases. On Monday, teachers were able to begin teaching virtual classes from their classrooms if they wanted to. In a message to staff, Superintendent Darryl Williams laid out the next steps, WBAL-TV 11 reports. On Oct. 19, all teachers and staff will return to school buildings. By Nov. 13, small groups of students will return to school buildings. Those include students with disabilities who attend separate public day schools (like Ridge Ruxton School) and self-contained regional programs.
They also include students in preschool, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. Families of these students will be surveyed early next month to determine who wants to return. For families who don’t want to send their children back, online instruction will remain available. Schools will operate in line with guidance from county health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As conditions change, the district’s reopening plan may as well. Cindy Sexton, president of the Teachers Association of Baltimore County, said there were talks to bring small groups of students back but that she was “very surprised” to hear that faculty and staff are being forced to return to buildings next month.
“We are concerned that the schools are not healthy,” Sexton said. “We still don’t know the transmission rate. We know the (number of) cases per 100,000 is not where it needs to be for safe reopening.” She said some teachers may have trouble making childcare plans for themselves. She said the district’s bargaining units are working on a joint statement and TABCO’s board has planned an
emergency meeting to discuss their next steps, including possible legal action. Baltimore County Executive John Olszewski Jr. was also caught off guard and said stakeholders “deserve collaborative planning and clear communication.” “My administration has consistently asked for specific updates about plans to reopen our schools. Instead, alongside our educators and parents, I learned the details of BCPS’ reopening announcement earlier today,” Olszewski said in a statement. “As County Executive and a former teacher, I want to get all our kids back to the classroom as quickly as possible — especially our youngest learners and students with disabilities and special needs.”
Baltimore County to Align with Maryland’s Updated Stage Three Steps By: Staff Reporter
B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M

B
altimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski today announced that Baltimore County will continue alignment with state actions, which will allow operations at restaurants to increase from 50 to 75 percent capacity, with appropriate distancing, and following strict public health requirements consistent with the CDC, FDA, and the National Restaurant Association, effective Monday September 21 at 5 p.m. According to State metrics, Baltimore County’s positivity rate is currently 2.3 percent—a reduction of 81 percent reduction since May 29, 2020. County Executive Olszewski released the following statement: “Baltimore County continues to see progress in major health metrics
as we have gradually and safely reopened our economy. While we are continuing to align with the state, we cannot let our guard down. In Baltimore County, we’re focused on getting our kids back in school, which requires all of us to do our part to slow the spread of this virus. We have to Be Safe to Stay Safe by wearing face coverings and socially distancing—especially while indoors—to protect ourselves and our loved ones. This dangerous disease is still with us and we must continue to follow public health guidance. We know that COVID-19 spreads more easily indoors than outdoors, so as we move forward today, we continue to urge residents to prioritize less risky activities in their support of restaurants, such as carry-out and outdoor dining. In the days and weeks ahead, we will continue to strictly enforce state
and local ordinances—any businesses found to be violating face-covering or social distancing mandates will be held accountable. As with every step we have taken, we will continue to monitor this situation and will do whatever is necessary to protect public health. We’re still in this together and can only get through this together.” Face Coverings Still Required
Under state and local order, individuals ages five and up are required to wear face coverings in any indoor business, service, organization or establishment that serves the general public. This includes, but is not limited to, retail establishments, recreational establishments, theaters, houses of worship and other locations open to the public. Individuals ages five and up are required to wear face coverings when outdoors and unable to consistently maintain at least six feet of distance from individuals who are not members of their household. Individuals are not required to wear a mask if eating or drinking while seated. In accordance with Governor Hogan’s orders, face coverings are still required when otherwise moving in or about a restaurant or bar premises.

Jewish Community Football League (JCFL) by “The Kitchen Spot” Kicks Off 2020 Season
S
eptember 2020 ushered in the 9th consecutive season of the “JCFL by The Kitchen Spot.” With a number of safety precautions and protocols put in place, the league was ready to go on time and on schedule. Prior to the opening week of the season, the league’s 80 players were divided between eight different teams via a draft system, ensuring parity in competition. The eight teams are each named for their individual team sponsors: All State – Yaakov Schmell, Believe and Achieve Sports Training, Bridge Capital Services, Doctor Auto, Harris Automotive, My Goods, Shimz Cars, and Tripping Kosher. Following the draft, teams were provided with their team jerseys AND league gaiter masks, which were manufactured once again by “Fired Up Promotions” and designed by local, talented graphic artist, Moshe Heideman. Like previous seasons, all eight teams will compete for seven regular season games, with the top four teams facing off in a round of playoffs. The playoffs winners will then battle each other in the league championship, The Ouch Guy Championship, with each hoping to take home the coveted, Ouch Guy Cup. All 8 teams will play their games at the ActualEyes Fields (at Pikesville Middle). To learn more about the league, check out the JCFL by The Kitchen Spot’s website: https://www.leaguelineup.com/jewishcommunityfootball For a recap of some of the excitement from the first two weeks of the season, keep reading: Week 1
Tripping Kosher Bridge Capital Services

A highly anticipated storyline coming into the season was how Tripping Kosher captain Chaim Finkelstein and longtime rival, star WR Shulie Hochman would play together. They answered that question quickly. Hochman pulled in an INT on the
first drive of the game and Finkelstein threw a touchdown to Aron Meister for the first touchdown of the season. BCS tied the game on the next possession but two drives later, the Ageless Wonder, Yaakov Spatz made a highlight reel catch inside the five-yard line, setting up Tripping Kosher for another opportunity to score before halftime. However, TK was unable to capitalize. On the opening drive of the second half, Tripping Kosher easily marched down the field, capping the drive with a Finkelstein touchdown pass to Ouriel Nafisi. Rookie TE Yehuda Ezoory caught the extra point, leaping over a defender. On the ensuing possession, Hochman tipped a pass and Nafisi intercepted it and returned it for a touchdown, giving TK a two TD lead. Later in the game, BCS cut the lead to 7, but Yaakov Spatz struck again, beating his man down the sideline and hauling in a 35-yard TD pass, sealing the game for Tripping Kosher. With this win, Chaim Finkelstein’s career opening day record improves to 9-0.
Harris Automotive Allstate – Yaakov Schmell
32 26
Newly minted championship quarterback Dan Gutman showed no rust or aging as he came out firing first half touchdown passes to Yoni Guggenheim, Mordechai Scheirmeyer, and Aryeh Wolf. However, opposing rookie quarterback Ezra Bregin was up to the task as well, doing his best Josh Allen impression, running and throwing for multiple TDs. In the second half, both defenses made adjustments and stiffened up. With 5 minutes to go Harris Automotive’s coach drew up two fantastic plays. Gutman first connected with Scheirmeyer for a 30-yard completion on 3rd down which set up a
well-designed and game clinching TD pass to his brother, Ben Gutman. Week 2 Believe and Achieve Sports Training
Harris Automotive
26 19
The first half was a back and forth battle with both teams driving the ball down the field. Going into the half, Believe and Achieve Sports held a 19-13 lead, thanks to TDs from Aaron Schnur, Moshe Reches, and Levi Zaslow. In the beginning of the second half, B&A’s Ari Pliskin grabbed a big interception but Harris Automotive made an impressive goal line stand, culminating in an interception. Later in the game, Harris QB Dan Gutman drove his team down the field and scored to tie it up. B&A stopped the extra point to keep the game tied 19-19. After a big fourth down conversion from Levi Zaslow, B&A scored with a TD pass to Shmuely Luxenburg and extra point by Ari Pliskin to make it 26-19 with under a minute to go. With 7 seconds left, Harris Automotive tried a trick play for the tying TD but the play was broken up in the end zone and the game ended with B&A as the victors.
Doctor Auto Bridge Capital Services
57 21
Filling in for starting QB Ariel Afra, YoYo Strauss led Doctor Auto to a win reminiscent of his historic 2014 championship season. Things started off hot on the first play when Yoyo ran a designed run for a 40-yard gain. As the crowd began chanting “air it out” on the next drive - Doctor Auto did just that. With questions surrounding the return of All-Pro WR Josh Zaslow, critics were eagerly waiting to see if the beat writers were correct in asserting that he looked “quicker, faster, and stronger than ever before.” Catching three TDs of 10, 40, and 60 yards coupled with two 2-point conversions and a game ending interception, fantasy drafters were not disappointed. After taking an early lead (despite a pick 6 from by Bridge’s Avi Frand), Doctor-Auto came roaring back with a Pasey Wealcatch INT and TD catch, and Avner Shotz making incredible grabs over the middle of the field, (catching three TD’s of his own). Doctor-Auto’s explosive offense coupled with shutdown defense and strong line led by Levi “Pancake” Akkerman, sacks by Yitzy Seidel, and the high football IQ of Ozzie Marizan enabled Doctor Auto to cruise to victory.

Our speech therapist specializes in neurorehabilitation addressing memory, attention, problem solving, judgment, executive functioning as well as swallowing problems, speech deficits, word retrieval problems, and language deficits. Q: Tell us about a typical patient experience with Steady Strides. A: Patients usually hear about us by word of mouth. Most have not had success in other places and are frustrated with the system failing to fix their problem. After our initial intake, these patients generally have a more comprehensive understanding of their
problem and better understand what can be done to fix it. Patients then go on to work with our therapists who provide a customized treatment plan until they meet their goals in therapy. Q: Is care at Steady Strides covered by insurance? A: Absolutely! Q: What is the best way to make an appointment? A: We are currently scheduling both in person and telemedicine appointments due to COVID-19. Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am a physiatrist, or rehabilitation doctor. I earned my Bachelors of Science in Cybernetics and Masters of Science in Biochemistry at University of California, Los Angeles. Later I studied Jewish Medical Ethics and Talmud at the Heiden Institute in Jerusalem, Israel. I trained in University of California, San Diego Medical School and completed residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After residency I was recruited to stay on as a full time faculty member with Johns Hopkins Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), of which I eventually became a former director. I am currently an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins and I recently opened an outpatient therapy practice called Steady Strides Medical Institute. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, learning

IDF Trains for Mass West Bank Uprising
The IDF capped off a surprise week-long drill simulating a massive Palestinian uprising in the West Bank
last week. The exercise was launched without warning on Monday and lasted until Thursday afternoon. Thousands of soldiers from four West Bank Regional Brigades participated, along with hundreds more from the Air Force, Military Intelligence, Teleprocessing Corps, Shin Bet security service and Israel Police. During the drill, soldiers trained for a scenario in which hundreds of thousands of Palestinians throughout the territory would launch a coordinated uprising against Israel. Troops practiced making mass arrests, riot dispersal, and guarding Jewish villages from Arab mobs. Capping off the exercise was a kidnapping scenario in which terrorists forcibly sped off with a soldier guarding a popular thoroughfare. The reaction saw special forces quickly sealing off Hebron and raiding hundreds of

Kidnappings are viewed as the IDF’s worst-case scenario, as Israel has often freed thousands of violent terrorists in lopsided prisoner swaps. In the most recent such arrangement, Israel released 1,027 in 2011 for the return of Gilad Shalit, a tank loader kidnapped by Hamas in 2006. The drill comes as intelligence reports warn of a growing possibility of widespread social unrest amidst the Palestinians due to economic fallout from the coronavirus and a lack of trust in the Palestinian Authority. “Throughout the past week, we conducted an exercise that was long and exhaustive that brought together a series of preparations for operational plans in the case of an escalation of violence in Judea and Samaria,” said Central Command head, Maj. Gen. Tamir Yadai. “Throughout the exercise, different scenarios were examined based on situational assessments and past events and readiness for events of the future,” Yadai added. “We are assessing the exercise with satisfaction from the preparedness and actions of the troops in the field, and with a number of topics that we must learn from and dig deeper into going forward.”

Litzman Steps Down Housing Minister Yaakov Litzman resigned from the government on Sunday in protest of the government’s imminent decision to impose a general lockdown during the upcoming holiday period. Litzman – the former health minister – had long threatened to resign if the lockdown plan is approved, and had also said his United Torah Judaism party could bolt the coalition. Litzman accused coronavirus czar Ronni Gamzu of planning for months to impose a lockdown on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur while avoiding the move during the summer season. In a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Litzman decried the fact that the lockdown would prevent daveners, including tens of thousands of Jews who don’t go to shul during most of the year, from attending the most important and well-attended
Jewish services of the year. “Unfortunately, it has been proven that I was right and that the decision to impose a general lockdown during the Tishrei festivals was pre-made while taking an unnecessary risk and causing a rise in infections in the meantime,” Litzman wrote.
He also claimed Netanyahu had violated an agreement according to which synagogues would remain open under more lenient restrictions than those set to be approved. “Therefore, I won’t be able to continue in my role as minister, and I have decided to resign from the government and return to being a member of the Knesset according to the Norwegian Law,” he said, referring to a law that allows ministers to resign from the Knesset and allow another lawmaker to replace them, and return to the parliament when they cease to serve as minister. Netanyahu said he was “very saddened” at the decision, but added: “I respect Yaakov Litzman and I also respect his decision.” “We must move forward, make the decisions needed for the State of Israel during the coronavirus crisis, and that’s what we will do during this meeting,” the prime minister said. Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, who leads Shas, said he was also “very saddened” at Litzman’s resignation.

The Week In News tablish full diplomatic relations with Israel, following the United Arab Emirates in normalizing its ties with the Jewish State. The diplomatic breakthrough was first announced by President Donald Trump on Friday afternoon, shortly before the onset of Shabbat in Israel. “Another HISTORIC breakthrough today! Our two GREAT friends Israel and the Kingdom of Bahrain agree to a Peace Deal – the second Arab country to make peace with Israel in 30 days!” Trump tweeted. A statement released later by the White House confirmed that Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Salman al-Khalifa and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu conversed “and agreed to the establishment of full diplomatic relations between Israel and the Kingdom of Bahrain.” Khalid al-Khalifa, a senior advisor to Bahrain’s king, told reporters on Saturday that normalization “sends a positive and encouraging message to the people of Israel, that a just and
comprehensive peace with the Palestinian people is the best path and the true interest for their future and the future of the peoples of the region.” Following the announcement, the Gulf State joined the United Arab Emirates in signing a peace deal with Israel at the White House on Tuesday. The UAE had announced that it would normalize its relations with Israel on August 13, leading to speculation that other Arab countries would follow. As part of the agreement, Bahrain and Israel will open embassies in each other’s capitals and exchange ambassadors. An Israeli delegation is slated to fly to Bahrain’s capital to begin preparations later this month. The Palestinian Authority condemned Bahrain’s accord with Israel, calling it an “act of treason” that was “a stab in the back of the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people.” The Hamas terror group slammed Bahrain’s “act of aggression” that caused “serious harm” to the Palestinian people.

A small island located in the Persian Gulf, Bahrain had refused to recognize Israel’s existence since declaring independence in 1971. However, relentless subversion efforts by neighboring Iran among Bahrain’s 1.5 million Shiites have resulted in the monarchy drawing closer to Israel in order to fight off their common enemy. Bahrain is seen as especially close to Saudi Arabia, with the latter even deploying troops on the island in 2011 to crush an Iranian-backed uprising. The close ties between the two countries have raised speculation that Riyadh will soon unveil its own peace deal with Israel, as Bahrain was unlikely to normalize without Saudi Arabia’s acquiescence.
Medical Tourism Initiative with UAE
After having normalized relations with Israel, the United Arab Emirates wants to launch a medical tourism initiative with Tel Aviv’s Sheba Medical Center. Israel’s biggest hospital just inked a memorandum of understanding with the UAE’s biggest investment fund. The signing ceremony will take place at the end of September in Abu Dhabi and will be attended by senior members of the royal family. The agreement would see thousands of Emiratis traveling to Sheba in Israel to undergo complicated medical procedures and would fund joint research on medical innovation, professional training, medical tourism, and COVID-19 treatment. The hospital, which was recently ranked as the world’s ninth best by Newsweek, is a leader in rehabilitation, pediatrics, women’s health, post-traumatic stress disorder, and eating disorders. The agreement marks the first instance of cooperation announced
between an Israeli hospital with an Emirati company since both countries announced that they would normalize relations in August. U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman lauded the development, calling it “fitting” that the first bilateral agreement would involve Israel’s world-renowned health care industry. “It is fitting that the first significant partnership between Israel and the UAE is in health care,” said Amb. Friedman. “The Abraham Accords are already making the Middle East safer and more prosperous.” According to Yoel Hareven, the director of Sheba’s international division, the short, two-hour flight between the UAE and Israel, along with the medical center’s Arabic-speaking medical staff, will prove to be particularly attractive. “There is limited knowledge and lots of complicated cases that are sent outside the UAE, so now they will have a new solution that is closer than Europe, and cheaper than the United States,” Hareven told the Times of Israel. “It’s welcoming, as so many medical staff speak Arabic. It can be almost home away from home.” Several Gulf states have had thriving relations with Sheba even prior to the normalization announcement, with senior officials from Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates reportedly having visited the medical center earlier this year for a conference on the coronavirus.
Israel Announces 3 Week Lockdown
Israelis will spend the holiday period in their own homes after the government voted in favor of the country’s second lockdown since the initial coronavirus outbreak in March. The lockdown will begin at 2 p.m.

Other businesses will be allowed to continue operating but will be banned from being opened to the general public. All schools will be closed during the three-week period, and prayers will be allowed but under severe limitations. have implemented a lockdown for an entire month, prohibited incoming and outgoing flights for two weeks, and prevented people from attending Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur prayers. Israel’s second lockdown was announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a press conference he gave shortly before heading to Washington to sign a peace deal with the UAE. Acknowledging the rising public anger against the government’s failures to stem the coronavirus outbreak, Netanyahu said that the overflowing hospital wards left Israel no other choice. “I know these steps are a heavy price for us all,” the prime minister said. “These are not the holidays we are used to. We certainly won’t be able to celebrate with our extended families.

“If we are not careful to follow these basic steps, the virus will spread,” warned Netanyahu. “Anyone who does not keep the directives is harming other people.” He exhorted the public to “beat the virus,” promising that he “saw the vaccine on the way.” “For three months, I tried to avoid a lockdown. I did everything so that we could live alongside the coronavirus, with rules here and there,” he said. “Under the circumstances that were created, we had no choice.” The Bank of Israel had strongly opposed implementing a lengthy closure, warning that the economy is expected to suffer a $1.5 billion loss. One out of every 5 restaurants are expected to declare bankruptcy, along with 25% of hotels. Netanyahu was attacked by opposition lawmakers following his announcement, who called on him to resign for his mismanagement of the pandemic. “Netanyahu simply can’t admit that he failed and apologize to the Israeli public,” tweeted opposition leader MK Yair Lapid. “That was the minimum he had to do this evening. Those who are incapable of admitting failure also can’t rectify it. You failed. Resign.”

3 Life Sentences for Jewish Perp The Lod District Court sentenced Amiram Ben- Uliel to three life sentences for killing members of the Pal-
estinian Dawabshe family in 2015. Ben-Uliel was also ordered to pay NIS 258,000 to the surviving family members along with an additional NIS 200,000 fine. In the ruling, the threejudge panel wrote that Ben-Uliel acted out of “extreme ideology and racism” and noted that he did not express remorse for his actions. The court added that Ben-Uliel’s actions “were meticulously planned” and “aimed at harming innocent life.” It said the punishment was “close to the maximum penalty prescribed by the law.” Ben-Uliel, an extremist settler, was found guilty in May of firebombing the Dawabshe home in the Palestinian city of Duma in 2015. The resulting inferno killed Saad and Riham Dawabshe and their 18-month-old child Ali. The firebombing resulted in a wave of Palestinian terror and led Israel’s government to ask the Shin Bet to probe the case after the police failed to come up with any leads. The Shin Bet called the verdict “an important milestone in the struggle against Jewish terrorism.” The sentence came despite the fact that Ben-Uliel confessed to the crime after undergoing weeks of torture by the Shin Bet internal security service. Ben-Uliel’s attorneys had argued that their client confessed to a crime that he did not commit in order to get the pain to stop, pointing out that the Shin Bet did not consider his reenactment of the attack an accurate depiction of events. Orian Ben-Uliel, the convicted terrorists’ wife, maintained at the trial on Monday that “the judges didn’t seek justice or truth. They decided to

Pollution levels in Los Angeles have skyrocketed, with the busy metropolis witnessing smog levels not seen since the 1990s. According to South Coast Air Quality Management, ozone pollution hit 185 parts per billion (ppb) this past Sunday, the highest California’s largest city has recorded in 26 years. The smog levels are far above the federal government’s standard of 70 ppb and came following a particularly fierce heat wave. The scorching temperatures, which surpassed 120 degrees on Sunday, resulted in record smog levels all across California. In Orange County, the average ozone pollution hit 123 ppb, the highest since the Index began daily checks in 2000. In Compton, a large city adjacent to Los Angeles, the eight-hour reading surpassed 115 ppb for the first time since 2008. Adding to the high smog levels are California’s raging wildfires which have burned over 3.2 million acres of land. The large pillars of smoke have caused California’s skies to turn an unnatural shade of red and contributed to the unseasonably hot September the state is suffering from. More than 16,500 firefighters are currently fighting 28 major wildfires, which have killed 24 people and devastated 4,200 homes. The aftermath has left California with rolling blackouts and billions in economic damage.
President Donald Trump awarded the Medal of Honor to U.S. Army Sgt. Major Thomas “Patrick” Payne for saving 75 ISIS hostages in a 2015 raid in Iraq. Calling Payne “one of the bravest men anywhere in the world,” Trump awarded him America’s highest military honor in a White House ceremony last Friday. “Today he joins the immortal company of our most revered American heroes,” said Trump as he pinned the award on him. “Pat, you personify the motto: ‘Rangers lead the way.’” Payne, 36, was born in South Carolina and enlisted into the armed forces after graduating high school and passed the punishing Ranger Indoctrination Program. After serving for three years as a Ranger sniper, Payne was recruited into the Army’s Delta Force, a top-secret special operations unit. In October 2015, Payne’s unit raided an ISIS hideout in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk. During the subsequent shootout, Payne noticed a burning prison filled with ISIS hostages that were unable to free themselves and flee to safety. Ignoring the bullets whizzing past his head, Payne grabbed a pair of pliers and forcibly dismantled the prison door’s lock, enabling the 75 hostages to flee the flaming inferno. After landing
safely back in the U.S., Payne’s commanders nominated him for the Medal of Honor, leading to Friday’s ceremony on the 19th anniversary since the 9/11 attacks. Upon receiving the award, Payne became the first living Delta Force operative to receive the prestigious honor. In the ceremony attended by his family and fellow Delta Force members, Trump praised him as representing the finest of what America had to offer. “He ran right back into that raging blaze,” the president said. “He sliced the final lock and released the rest of the hostages. As the building began to collapse, he received orders to evacuate but he refused to do so. He didn’t want to leave anyone behind. “Pat ran back into the burning building that was collapsing,” Trump continued. “Two more times. He saved multiple hostages, and he was the last man to leave.” Payne had previously won the Best Ranger Competition after surviving the grueling week-long competition against his fellow soldiers in 2012. He also completed 17 deployments and overcame injuries from a grenade blast to return to active military service.
Top Prosecutor on Durham Probe Quits Nora Dannehy, a top prosecutor working on U.S. Attorney John H. Durham’s probe of the Russian interference investigation, abruptly quit on Thursday. Durham is currently leading a probe into the origins of the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation that examined President Trump’s alleged connections with Russian intelligence. As a senior aide to Durham, Dannehy played a central role in the team’s effort to rout out malfeasance at the highest levels of America’s national security apparatus. However, Dannehy suddenly decided to resign after feeling that the Durham probe was being used for political reasons. According to her associates, Dannehy was bothered by escalating pressure from Attorney
General William Barr to publish the team’s findings before the presidential election in November. Dannehy, who is known to disagree heavily with President Trump, reportedly felt that it was improper for a Department of Justice investigation to be used as political capital during a presidential election. While denying that he seeks to use the probe for political ends, Barr maintained in a recent interview that it is imperative for Durham to publish his findings before a Biden administration could quash it should Trump lose in November. “I’ve said there are going to be developments, significant developments before the election, but we are not doing this on the election schedule,” Barr told Fox News in August. “We are aware of the election, we are not going to do anything inappropriate before the election, but we are not being dictated to by this schedule. What’s dictating the timing of this are developments in the case, and there will be developments.” He added, “The way out of the politicization and corruption of the justice system where it’s used as a political weapon by one party against another is not to deliver tit-for-tat, it’s not to use the tactics of the other side, it’s to uphold the rule of law, use the right standard, and that’s what I’m trying to do.” Barr had tapped Durham to look into the origins of the FBI’s Russia investigation and decide whether the probe into Trump’s 2016 campaign was “lawful and appropriate.” In August, the Durham investigation brought out its first indictment by bringing charges against former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith for faking an email to obtain a wiretap on a Trump aide.

The Week In News counsel Robert Mueller’s team wiped 28 cellphones used in the Trump probe. Officially known as the “Report on the Investigation into Russian Interference in the 2016 Presidential Election,” the Mueller team examined connections between the Trump campaign and Russian intelligence. The investigation’s findings were published in 2019 and did not find any evidence of collusion by President Donald Trump or his campaign. Last week, newly-released Department of Justice records showed that the team’s investigators systematically wiped clean 27 cellphones they used by repeatedly entering the wrong password. The phones’ contents were automatically deleted, preventing others from witnessing the team’s correspondence. Now, Senate Republicans want to investigate whether Mueller Report staffers violated federal records-keeping laws. In a missive to the FBI, Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley asked that the Bureau investigate whether the deletions were part of a “widespread intentional effort” to
cover up wrongdoing. Grassley also requested that the Department of Justice publicize all of the phone records from the Mueller probe. Meanwhile, Homeland Security Committee Chairman Ron Johnson pressed Department of Justice inspector general Michael Horowitz to look into the matter as well. “These reports are troubling and raise concerns about record retention and transparency,” wrote Johnson. “Therefore, I respectfully request that your office open an investigation into this matter to determine what, why, and how information was wiped, whether any wrongdoing occurred, and who these devices belonged to.” President Trump also called for an investigation, tweeting on Monday that “action must be taken.”
Oracle to Buy TikTok Tech giant Oracle reached a deal to
purchase a significant stake in popular video sharing app TikTok, only days before the platform would have been banned in the U.S. President Donald Trump had ordered a complete ban on TikTok in the United States if the Chinese app was not sold by September 15. While the parameters of the deal are unclear, TikTok said that its sale to Oracle would assuage the Trump administration’s national security concerns. “We can confirm that we’ve submitted a proposal to the Treasury Department which we believe would resolve the Administration’s security concerns,” TikTok said. According to reports, Oracle will get a significant stake in TikTok and would work to prevent user data from being accessed by Chinese intelligence. However, TikTok owner Byte Dance will not sell its operations outright or share the app’s source code with Oracle. The deal is Oracle’s first foray into social media, with the data giant having focused on database technology and cloud systems since its founding
in 1975. Oracle beat out Microsoft for the winning bid, which sought to purchase the app in order to expand its digital marketing presence. However, the deal needs to be approved by both the U.S. and Chinese governments. Trump has already announced that his administration will support Oracle’s quest to purchase TikTok, saying that “I think Oracle is a great company and I think its owner is a tremendous guy, a tremendous person.” TikTok is the world’s fastest-growing social media app and currently has an estimated 80 million users in the U.S. alone. It uses advanced artificial intelligence to disseminate user-created music, lip-sync, dance, comedy and talent videos of 3 to 15 seconds. In August, Trump issued an executive order banning it from the U.S. if it was not sold to a non-Chinese company by September 15. U.S. officials say that the app is used by Beijing to spy on its users and threatens national security. The ban was part of an overall crackdown on Chinese-owned firms that operate in the United States.

Upon issuing the executive order, Trump accused Chinese-owned tech platforms of “threatening the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.”
CA Officers Shot In an unprovoked attack, a man walked up to a car in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles on Saturday and opened fire against two officers through the passenger side window. The two officers inside, a 24-yearold male and a 31-year-old female, sustained injuries but will hopefully pull through. Claudia Apolinar was struck in the jaw and arms; her partner was hit in the forehead, arms, and hand. She managed to call for help and apply a tourniquet to her partner’s wounds after the shooting. The perpetrator has been identified as a black male between the ages of 28 and 30.
The unexplained shooting, in a neighborhood with a high crime rate and a history of tension between the police and black community, drew media and political attention toward the dangers police face on the job. “These are real people doing a tough job, and it just shows the dangers of the job, in the blink of an eye,” LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said after the shooting. Villanueva lashed out on Monday at protesters who showed up Saturday night at the hospital where the two officers are being treated, with some reportedly shouting “death to the police” as they tried to force their way into the emergency room. “They were chanting that they wish the deputies died,” Villanueva told KNX. “And I don’t even know how to be begin to describe that, other than repulsive, reprehensible.” Two people were arrested during the protest outside the hospital, in-
cluding a journalist for NPR who was accused of “interfering with a lawful arrest.”
Million-Dollar Settlement The city of Louisville, Kentucky, has reached a multimillion-dollar settlement with the family of Breonna Taylor, the emergency medical technician shot to death by police in her own home in March. Taylor was sleeping inside their Louisville apartment when officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department attempted to execute a “noknock” search warrant. Three plainclothes officers opened Taylor’s front door and “blindly” opened fire into their apartment, according to a wrongful death lawsuit filed in April by Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer. Taylor, a licensed EMT, was shot at least eight times and died. The warrant was issued because Taylor was accused of accepting USPS packages for an ex-boyfriend who police were investigating as an alleged drug trafficker. According to police, officers knocked several times before ramming down the door and were allegedly met with gunfire. The three officers involved in the shooting, Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and detectives Brett Hankinson and Myles Cosgrove, were placed on administrative reassignment pending the results of an investigation. Hankison was later fired for his role in the incident. According to his termination letter that was shared with local reporters, Hankison violated procedure when he fired 10 rounds into Taylor’s apartment while executing the warrant.

Sudan, Nicaragua, Haiti, and El Salvador. Temporary Protected Status – a form of humanitarian relief – applies to people in the United States who would face extreme hardship if forced to return to homelands devastated by armed conflict or natural disasters, and allows them to legally work in the U.S. The Trump administration has been critical of TPS.

In a 2-1 ruling Monday, a panel of the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals found that, under the TPS statute, the Department of Homeland Security secretary “possesses full and unreviewable discretion as to whether to consider intervening events in making a TPS determination.” TPS holders and their U.S. citizen children had challenged the planned move to end the protections, arguing in part that the decision was motivated by racism. The court panel’s majority concluded that “there is still no evidentiary support for the conclusion that this overarching goal was motivated by racial animus.” “This government has failed me and the other 250,000 U.S. citizen children of TPS holders. If this decision stands, it means Trump’s termination of TPS will move ahead and TPS holders will only have until January 2021 to legally live and work in this country,” said Crista Ramos, lead plaintiff in the case. Last year, the Department of Homeland Security announced that the administration would extend the validity of work permits for El Salvadorans with protected status through January 4, 2021. That decision came on the heels of an agreement with El Salvador that would allow the U.S. to send some asylum seekers to that country to seek humanitarian protections there. As a result, El Salvadorans with protected status have an additional year after the
conclusion of the TPS-related lawsuits to repatriate back to their home country.
Finally Broke
Charles “Chuck” Feeney has no money, and he couldn’t be happier. The 89-year-old had cofounded Duty Free Shoppers in 1960 and had become a billionaire. But Feeney didn’t want to take his money to his grave. He pioneered the idea of Giving While Living – spending most of your fortune on big, hands-on charities instead of funding a foundation upon death. On September 14, 2020, Feeney achieved his dream and shuttered his philanthropic organization after giving it all to charity. “We learned a lot. We would do some things differently, but I am very satisfied. I feel very good about completing this on my watch,” Feeney told Forbes. “My thanks to all who joined us on this journey. And to those wondering about Giving While Living: try it, you’ll like it.” Over the last four decades, Feeney has donated more than $8 billion to charities, universities, and foundations worldwide through his foundation, the Atlantic Philanthropies. Many of his donations were done anonymously. Forbes called him the James Bond of Philanthropy. Feeney gave $3.7 billion to education including nearly $1 billion to his alma mater Cornell, which he attended on the G.I. Bill. More than $870 million went to human rights and social change, like $62 million in grants to abolish the death penalty in the U.S. and $76 million for grassroots campaigns supporting the passage of Obamacare. He gave more than $700 million in gifts to health ranging from a $270 grant to improve public health-
care in Vietnam to a $176 million gift to the Global Brain Health Institute at University of California, San Francisco. One of his final gifts was $350 million for Cornell to build a technology campus on New York City’s Roosevelt Island. And now he’s broke – and couldn’t be happier.
Lincoln’s Locks
A lock of President Abraham Lincoln’s hair and a telegram smeared with his blood sold for more than $81,000 at auction. The historic items sold at an auction that ended Saturday by a buyer who chose to remain anonymous. A 2-inch lock of the president’s hair was clipped during a postmortem examination a day after he was assassinated at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865. The hair was given to Dr. Lyman Beecher Todd, a cousin of first lady Mary Todd Lincoln. Having nothing to wrap the lock of hair with, Dr. Todd reached into his pocket and used a War Department telegram sent soon after the president was shot. “He wrapped the lock, stained with blood or brain fluid, in this telegram and hastily wrote on it in pencil: ‘Hair of A. Lincoln,’” Todd’s son wrote in a caption. Todd’s son, James A. Todd, outlined the details of the hair and the telegram in a letter dated February 12, 1945. “The lock of Abraham Lincoln’s hair…was cut from his head and given to my father during the performance of the postmortem and has remained
entirely in the custody of our family since that time,” Todd’s son wrote in the 1945 letter. The telegram was received at 11 p.m. the night Lincoln was shot. Todd was appointed the postmaster in Lexington in 1861 after Lincoln became president. He made history when he stayed at Lincoln’s bedside in the president’s final hours at the Petersen House across the street from Ford’s Theatre.
Best Chol Hamoed Ever
Looking for the best chol hamoed trip ever? If you live in Kentucky (and chances of that are pretty slim if you’re reading this paper), you can take the family to Beech Bend Amusement Park & Splash Lagoon. The theme park is renting out the entire park for families to go on unlimited rides. The park in Bowling Green, Kentucky, is offering packages to families of six members to enjoy the park solo for up to eight hours. That’s taking social distancing to the max! Of course, a private theme park is going to cost you. The starting rate for a family of six is $5,000 for a two-hour rental. Have more people in your family? Accommodations can be made. The theme park, which is home to the Kentucky Rumbler and Air Race thrill rides, has also boosted its safety guidelines in response to COVID-19, by implementing new sanitizing measures and requiring masks worn inside the park. Better act fast if you want to ride rollercoasters with your family ad nauseum. The park closes for the season on September 19.

Giving “Kavod” to One Another, Not COVID By Hylton I. Lightman, MD, DCH (SA), FAAP
T
he moving target called Covid-19 has taxed us all. For physicians and other health care professionals, it has been perhaps the most challenging era of our careers. Patients call seeking guidance, and we are expected to have information available. My colleagues and I invest countless hours conferring with experts and one another, learning from one another with the specific goal of helping each of you. Further, many people seek our “haskama” to do as they want, expecting us to rubber stamp their behavior with practically a guarantee that all will be fine and there will be no repercussions for whatever they choose to do and go. Please don’t saddle us with that responsibility. It is neither flattering nor realistic. In fact, it is irresponsible. We are entering the Yamim Noraim with a pandemic that endures. There are steps we can take to assure our health and the health of fellow community members. Fellow pediatrician Aliza Minkin, MD, wrote the following guidelines that are relevant to people of all ages:
Back to Basics of COVID-19 We (physicians in the Five Towns and Far Rockaway) wrote these guidelines because we are all in this together, and we should all have this knowledge base. While there are many reliable sources of information, there is also so much misinformation. It feels like the rules are changing every day, and it is hard to know who to trust. We have come a long way from last
spring when we first painfully shut down our shuls and schools. Our children have eagerly returned to school and we are anticipating being together in shul, whether indoors or in an outdoor minyan, for the upcoming Yamim Noraim and chagim. When we started writing this, the COVID-19 rates in our frum communities were, like the surrounding areas, quite low. Now, there is unfortunately a rising number of cases in many of these Orthodox neighborhoods. Many of these cases can be traced to attending large simchas. We now know that our frum communities do not have “herd immunity” and second infections are already occurring. This rise in cases has already led to schools in other areas to shut down. We cannot go back to those awful days of “lockdown”! We need to keep our shuls, schools and businesses open and thriving! While we cannot completely prevent the spread of this virus, there are four very simple and important things we can do to limit it: -Physical distancing -Face covering (mask-wearing) when unable to physically distance -Hand washing -Staying home if you were exposed to or think you are contagious with COVID-19. Here are some common questions and misunderstandings I have come across as a pediatrician or heard about from other physician: 1. When can I test for COVID19-? I just found out I was exposed today. You can NOT test out of quaran-
tine. If you had a significant exposure (at least 10 to 15 minutes within 6 feet of another person infectious with COVID-19), you have to quarantine for 14 days because that is how long it may take to develop the illness. The incubation period is 2 to 14 days, with an average of about 5 to 7 days. You could test as early as day 2, but day 5 is better. BUT, if you test negative, you must still quarantine for the full 14 days, because it may have been too early, and there is also a significant chance the test was falsely negative. 2. I could not possibly have COVID19-. I was not exposed to anyone with it! This virus is highly contagious up to two days before a person develops any symptoms, and many people are contagious with it without getting any symptoms at all. You should assume everyone you come in contact with outside your home may have the virus, and follow the above guidelines of distancing and masking when not able to distance. 3. I don’t believe I have it, the test is probably wrong. I feel fine! Why should I stay home? The most important thing to do here is talk to your health care professional! As above, it is common to have little or no symptoms with COVID-19. The rapid tests we have now are not as reliable as the PCR: false positives definitely occur. If you test positive
on PCR, you must assume you have it and are contagious, with the exception discussed next. 4. I had COVID19- last month and was just exposed. Do I need to be tested? Quarantined? Again, talk to your health care professional, but current guidelines recommend NOT getting a new test for someone who had this virus in the past three months and has no symptoms. The PCR test may remain positive for that length of time without the person actually being contagious. If you develop symptoms, then you should be tested, even if you had COVID-19 in the last three months. 5. But I have antibodies! I don’t need to wear a mask, distance, etc. We are now seeing second infections. There is so much we still do not know about COVID-19, including how long immunity lasts and how best to measure this immunity. It is safer to follow the same distancing and masking guidelines as everyone else. 6. I went to a wedding because I felt fine. How was I supposed to know that my test would turn out positive a day later? Please never go to a simcha or other large event while waiting for your COVID-19 test to come back. If you were tested because you had some symptoms or were exposed, you need to stay home until you are sure you are not contagious. Unfortunately, some weddings have become

Many people undergo genetic testing at some point in their lives -- but miss the test for Gaucher disease. This is because, although common, Gaucher Disease isn’t life threatening and is not included in all Jewish genetic testing panels. Symptoms of Gaucher disease include bone and joint pain, easy bruising, enlarged liver and/or spleen and nose bleeds. Once diagnosed, Gaucher disease can be treated with medication.

This virus is like any other, it is usually so mild! No one is dying anymore! We know how to treat it now! The current rise in cases appears to be mainly in younger adults and children, who, on average, have mild to no symptoms. Even in this age group, however, there are very serious cases. There is often a lag time of weeks between a rise in cases in general and a rise in ICU admissions and even deaths. While we are better at treating these more severe cases, we are a long way from a reliable cure or vaccine. While our ICUs are thankfully not overcrowded as they were last spring, that does not mean you want to be a patient there. Also, while you may be healthy and do fine, others exposed to you may not do as well. We need to think

y name is Gil Rabi. I’m a professional singer, and I live in the city of Holon with my wife and four children. On Friday night, just as the Jewish New Year began, I had an experience that I will simply never forget. I was sitting down to the festive evening meal with my family when my United Hatzalah communication device alerted me to a medical emergency taking place nearby. I looked at my phone and saw that the emergency involved a cardiac arrest three streets down from my house. I told my wife what was going on as I grabbed my helmet and riding jacket. I rushed out the door and got onto my ambucycle. I felt a twinge of sadness at having to abandon my family in the middle of our holiday meal, but I knew that I had to go as a life was hanging in the balance. As I raced to the address, I focused on the protocols and procedures that I would undertake once I arrived: Check for a pulse and breathing, attach a defibrillator if necessary, begin compressions, use assisted breathing after another person joins, etc. Two minutes later, I was at the address. I raced up the stairs and into the apartment. I saw a middle-aged man lying on the floor, and his teenage son performing chest compressions on his own father. The sight was truly heart-wrenching but I had to put that aside and focus on treating the patient. I rushed over to the man and, after checking for a pulse and finding none, I attached a defibrillator and then relieved the son and took over doing compressions. A
attached a heart monitor, and told us to pause CPR while the monitor analyzed the patient. To our joy, the monitor found a pulse. We ceased compressions and continued assisted breathing for a few moments. Then the patient began to breathe on his own. To our surprise, he even opened his eyes and began to show signs of regaining consciousness. The paramedic looked at Lior and me and said, “I don’t think you two have anything to worry about this year, as G-d will judge you favorably. After all, you just helped him inscribe another one of his children in the Book of Life.” We helped the ambulance team prepare the patient for transport and carried him down to the ambulance. Once he was loaded on, Lior got on board as well in order to accompany the team to the hospital as they were only a staff of two people and needed the extra assistance.
The paramedic looked at Lior and me and said, “I don’t think you two have anything to worry about this year, as G-d will judge you favorably.”
few moments later, another United Hatzalah volunteer and friend of mine, Lior Eskenasy, raced through the door and got down next to me and began ventilating the patient. A moment or two later, two other United Hatzalah EMTs Chaim Tapiro and Yosef Sasson also joined.
We did two revolutions of CPR, and the defibrillator paused us in order to deliver a shock. We checked for a pulse but didn’t find one. We continued CPR and were joined a few minutes later by a mobile intensive care ambulance team. The team joined our CPR in progress,
I can’t explain the feeling I had as I drove my ambucycle back home and walked into my living room to see my family still waiting for me. When I told them what had transpired, the glow on their faces must have mimicked my own. It is extremely rare to have a cardiac arrest patient wake up so quickly after receiving CPR. To be a part of saving someone’s life just as the new year began, on a day that Jewish tradition believes is the day that G-d sits in judgment and we pray to be inscribed in the Book of Life, is something that will stay with me forever. It will be the high point of my year, a goal which I will strive to achieve every time I respond to a medical emergency.

Bahrain’s Diplomatic Agreement With Israel is a Building Block By David Ignatius

OCTOBER 29, 2015 | The Jewish Home
ith Bahrain’s announcement Friday that it will join the United Arab Emirates in establishing diplomatic relations with Israel, the dominoes are falling in the Middle East in the right direction for a change. Bahrain’s decision to join the Emiratis is a second solid gain for the Trump administration’s efforts to bridge the gap between Israel and Arab states. Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser on the Middle East, said in an interview that the move shows that “a lot of the leaders in the region are tired of waiting for the Palestinians” before recognizing the reality of Israel. The significance of Bahrain’s action is partly that it wouldn’t have happened without the blessing of Saudi Arabia, which is joined by a causeway to the small Persian Gulf state. The Saudis have historically exercised what amounts to a veto over Bahraini policy. In this case, the Saudis silently endorsed their tiny neighbor’s decision, rather than vetoing it. Kushner believes that the Saudis are waiting to see how the normalization process plays out before taking the move themselves. He thinks an eventual Saudi normalization is inevitable, if not imminent. The Sau-
dis gave tacit approval of the Emirati decision last month by publicly announcing they would allow commercial jets traveling between Israel and the U.A.E. to fly over Saudi territory. President Trump will have a prized photo opportunity when he hosts Bahraini, Emirati and Israeli leaders at a
That statement makes a good political sound bite in this election year, but it’s also true. Bahrain took a first step toward Friday’s announcement when it hosted a meeting in June 2019 between Israeli and Arab leaders to discuss economic aspects of Kushner’s thus-far stalled plan for the Palestinians. Because of this earlier public engagement with Israel, Bahrain was seen as a likely next country to follow the U.A.E. The administration is courting other Arab states to join the process. Brian Hook, the State Department official who has worked closely with Kushner on the normalization process, said the discussions are shaped

White House ceremony to celebrate the agreements. This shouldn’t be confused with a Palestinian-Israeli peace agreement – which looks as far away today as ever – but it’s still a significant achievement. Kushner noted the symbolism that the Bahrain agreement was announced on the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks: “On 9/11, there is no stronger counter to extremism than bringing countries together for tolerance and peace.”
by the fact that a younger generation of leaders – such as Bahrain’s Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa – is taking power in the Arab world. Sudan appears to be close: Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan, the head of the ruling military council that replaced Omar al-Bashir, is said to support an agreement with Israel now, but Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and other political factions apparently aren’t convinced. In Oman, Sultan Haitham bin
Tariq, who took the throne in January, has publicly supported the UAE-Israel deal and rebuffed Palestinian attempts to condemn the Emiratis. Although Haitham is still gaining his footing, his country has already hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which makes an eventual move toward full normalization easier. Morocco, which has a large Jewish population and for decades has maintained secret contacts with Israel, is another likely prospect. But the process is complicated by Morocco’s desire that the United States recognize its controversial claims of sovereignty in the contested western Sahara region. The dilemma for the Palestinians – whose suffering is largely ignored amid the celebrations of diplomatic progress – is how to influence a process that is accelerating despite their bitter opposition. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas failed to win Arab League endorsement this week for a resolution condemning the U.A.E. normalization decision. That was another sign that Palestinians have lost their veto power over Arab decisions on Israel. The decision by two wealthy Gulf countries to recognize Israel doesn’t help the shattered nations of the Middle East, such as Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Libya. And it doesn’t represent Middle East peace, whatever may be said at the White House next week. But for a region that sometimes seems to be in slow-motion collapse, it’s a building block for a better future. (c) 2020, Washington Post Writers Group

Viduy, Something to Sing About By Rabbi Zvi Teichman
Ay yai yai yai, Ay yai yai yai, Ay yai yai yai yai... Ahshamnu! Have you ever wondered why we sing this solemn but upbeat little tune to the words of Vidui, the Confession? Is the enumeration of our many sins truly something to sing about? • The term ודוי, is most often translated as admission or confession. Yet the Mishna ) (בכורים ב בrefers to two other mitzvos in the Torah that require an expression of ‘viduy’ that don’t quite fit this meaning.
B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M
When one brings Bikkurim, the offering of one’s first fruits to the Temple and its presentation as a gift to the Kohen, one must recite וידוי בכורים, the Viduy of the first fruits. That declaration begins with a brief synopsis of Jewish history starting from the episode of how the Amorite, Lavan, sought to destroy our father, Yaakov, thus compelling him to flee, initiating a chain of events that led us ultimately down to Egypt to eventually return to the Promised land to benefit from its bounty of fruit. There seems to be no mention of any sin that we are admitting to. Rashi enlightens us by explaining that in this affirmation of our ‘father’ Lavan having been a wicked person, we are ‘confessing’ to the sin of being his progeny! שמתודין שאביהן לבן הארמי היה רשע...( ) ד"ה וגנותו: סוטה לב- לשון רש"יAre we being held accountable that our matriarchs, Rachel and Leah, were fathered by Lavan?
The second mitzva that calls for a viduy is that of ודוי מעשר, the Viduy of Maaser,Tithes. On the last day of Pesach of the fourth and seventh year in a Shmitta cycle one would, preferably in the Temple, recite a declaration stating that one had fulfilled all the obligations regarding tithing, whether as regards delivering them to their appropriate recipients or in treating them in accordance to their sanctity. Where is the ‘confession’? On the contrary, if anything one seems to be giving oneself a ‘pat on the back’ for having dispatched one’s duties with aplomb. • וכל מא־- פיוט- ""הַ וַדַ אי שמו כן תהילתו מינים שהוא, For whom certainty is His name and so is His praise! The Maaseh Oreg reveals that " "הַ וַדַ אי, Certainty, is numerically equivalent to the שם הוי"ה, the Tetragrammaton. The famed Mashgiach, Rav Wolbe explains in the name of the Yalkut HaGershuni, that this sentiment expresses the notion and hope that just as G-d represents certainty so shall we praise Him with an equal sense of clarity without any doubt. Rabbeinu Bachya teaches that the word for confession ודוי, is indeed rooted in the word ודאי, certainty. (ויק־ )רא ה ה The Chida (מדבר קדמות מערכת ו אות ) טו"בremarkably points out that ודוי, possesses the same gematria of the Name of G-d, 26 ,!הוי"ה One who accepts G-d with abso-
lute clarity has no doubt that one is equipped to accomplish all that one needs to, with one’s own devices, no matter how deficient one may feel. When we recite the viduy our objective must be to no longer hide behind the facade of excuses, blame or the easy path of apathy. In a flash of clarity we take responsibility for what we have done. We realize that the first step towards repairing any flaw is contingent on the realization that it is my duty, nay, my privilege, to take the reins of accountability into my own hands. There is no more thrilling moment than the one when we discover this truth. It is both redemptive and empowering. One who constantly sees fault in all those around him or in the circumstances of one’s life as the cause for one’s own personal failure is doomed to live with misery and angst for eternity. It is a life that is obscured by doubt. • As Yaakov heads towards his challenging twenty year encounter with Lavan, this seemingly innocent conversation takes place with the local shepherds: Yaakov said to them “My brothers, where are you from?” And they said, “We are from Charan.” And he said to them, “Do you know...” “Lavan...?” And they said, “We know.” Then he said to them, “Is it well with him?”) ו- (בראשית כט ד, The Midrash HaGadol reveals, however, mystical underpinnings in this dialogue, interpreting the events as follows:
Yaakov observing the shepherds wandering aimlessly and disparately, questions them with brotherly concern as to why they are so disjointed. They respond that it is due to their coming from " — "חרוןliterally translated as angst and fear, indicating their worry of being punished due to their many sins. Yaakov questions whether, "הידע־ " — תםthey are aware of the power of viduy that can compel G-d to cleanse their dark stains of sin, turning their souls back into " — "לבןwhite like snow purity. They respond, "— "ידענו we know, and proceed to take responsibility for their sins by reciting viduy. Yaakov encourages them that with their ardent efforts, G-d will bless them with שלום, wellness. )(הובא בתו"ש Lavan is wrapped up in self-delusion. Always blaming others for his travail, constantly pushing his own agenda even at the expense of his own flesh and blood, Lavan is the quintessential malcontent who is incapable of ever taking responsibility for his own actions. Yaakov is aware of the challenge ahead. The success of raising the family of Israel lies in conquering this treacherous enemy. He comes prepared. Facing the lackluster shepherds who are wallowing in mindless selfpity he takes them to task. He teaches them that anger and frustration stems from unjustly blaming others and in the unwillingness to take charge of one’s own life. He instructs them that in the taking of the reins of responsibility and assuming with clarity that charge, they will find inner strength and solace in life. The Holy Admor of Piltz in his Sif-

44 sei Tzaddik says that this is precisely the viduy we express when bringing Bikkurim. (שפתי צדיק ח"ג מאמרים לפסח )אות כ Lavan the Aramite sought to destroy Yaakov’s destiny by introducing this poisonous attitude that could stifle spiritual growth and our ability to ever affect inner change. We acknowledge in this ‘confession’ this dangerous insolence that we ‘inherited’ from our ‘father’ Lavan that often infiltrates our emotions creating a paralyzing angst and fear that we are incapable of being responsible for our own destiny. It is not as much a confession of sin as it is a declaration of utter clarity in our ability to be responsible, and a willingness to assume accountability, for our decisions. • In our ‘confession’ we sense that bond between הודאי, the G-d of Certainty, Who is always at our side with encouragement, and our ודוי, our ex-
pression of clarity of purpose and mission that reflects an absolute faith in Him and in ourselves. The great Ohev Yisroel, HaRav A.Y. Hakohen Kook teaches that in the viduy of the Tithes we are asserting this clear truth as well, but from a different angle. When we succeed in fulfilling our duties we must regale in the joy and satisfaction of our accomplishments. Although we constantly aspire to attain new and heightened levels of observance we must never fall into dangerous self-incrimination. It is incumbent on us to take a moment to appreciate our allegiance and privilege in serving Him, and the achievements we have made in His service. The Talmud states that the viduy of Bikkurim is said aloud, while viduy of Maaser is said in a low voice. (סוטה ):לב When giving ourselves credit we must maintain our modesty lest we
lapse into overconfidence that often leads to laxity in our observance.
Aramean tried to destroy my father...”, to call out — בניגון, in song.
In the ‘confession’ of Bikkurim we must however possess the courage to express aloud and with confidence, our willingness to assume responsibility and the faith in that ability. • When we have fallen we are aware that we have a Father that is eager to help and assist us, all the more so if we are ready to take responsibility.
Perhaps our greatest joy in reciting viduy is in the knowledge that our Father in Heaven rejoices in our accepting responsibility. We have not to fear our mistakes but rather to be encouraged in the confidence He has in us that truly gives us reason to sing.
One of the thrilling moments in parenthood is when a parent observes a child’s willingness to assume responsibility for itself. Agra D’Pirka’s Hisorrerus L’Teshuva Program Provides Pre-Yomim Noraim Inspiration By Margie Pensak
Agra D’Pirka’s special Hisorrerus L’Teshuva program held on Tuesday, September 15, at Knesses Bais Avigdor in Flatbush, provided much sought-after inspiration in these challenging times, for those in the audience and around the globe -- thanks to live-streaming by Torah Anytime. I will attempt to provide but a glimpse of the numerous uplifting insights shared by the Rabbonim. Rav Avrohom Schorr, shlit”a, opened the program with the topic, “Hachana L’Rosh Hashanah”. To explain the concept of how we have to subjugate ourselves to Hashem - our melech - the Rav brought in current events. “COVID did not elevate us…everybody could tell you clearly what happened and how much you could learn from it and show you sefarim and remuzim - we have such chochomim in the world - but instead of elevating ourselves, suddenly we see a yerida in Yiddishkeit. At the end of the day, it didn’t do the job that it should have done…I hope that everybody realizes that herd immunity comes from the lack of sechel. Instead of using chochma the right way, we are using it the wrong way as to why we don’t have to watch ourselves. Everybody has terutzim for themselves – I can’t do this, I can’t do that – but, the true chochma is to realize that the Abishter wants us to learn that every din He brings to the world is for us to learn that the Abishter is the king, the melech, of the world.” Bringing in a beautiful Sefas Emes, the Rav mentioned how we see this with the gematria (bemilu’o) of the word “din” which is equivalent to that of “malchus”. “The tachlis of every din is for us to realize that the Abishter is king. So, the hachana of Rosh Hashanah is to look in retrospect at the year – and see if you didn’t use it right or make the right conclusions, but now when we have the chochma of tekias shofar which wakes us up to relearn what
happened this year, we have to take that awakening chochma and put it into action, l’meisa. If we realize that nothing helps with COVID – not the doctors or technology - what does the Abishter want? That we should realize that we have to listen to Him – that he is in charge. Nobody can get up and say it is because of this or that. Every person has to accept for themselves, if I realize the Abishter is melech and is in control, I have to subjugate myself. That means completely.” Rav Moshe Tuvia Lieff, shlit”a, presented, “Teshuva Mi’ahava – Let’s Get it Right”, referencing how those who are acculturated and assimilated in 2020 are emotionally and spiritually lost. “Just like sheep are separated from the flock, just as the shepherd is looking and searching for the sheep, the sheep are bleating, crying, and yearn-
ing to be found. When the shepherd is looking for the sheep, and the sheep are looking to be found, they will be reunited. These are the days when every Yid, consciously, subconsciously, unconsciously is yearning with gaguim and kissufim to be found, and that is the avoda of these hallowed days. Present ourselves to HaKadosh Baruch Hu and say, we are lost sheep – look for us, because we want to do the right thing; we want to be found.” Rav Lieff remarked that the velt struggles with the whole inyan of Elul, Rosh Hashana, Aseres Yemai Teshuva, Yom Kippur, and N’eila, and two months later, we are exactly like we were. We need to present ourselves as wanting to be found so we should be zoche to do Teshuva M’ahava and have our aveiros become mitzvos -- and be zoche to a kesiva vchasima tova for klal Yisrael.
What’s the easy path to Teshuva Mi’ahava? How do you get it right? It is only through diligent, consistent limud haTorah, as is fitting, says Rav Lieff. That turns aveiros into mitzvos. The Rav then shared a big chidush from the heilige Gaon Rav Tzadok Hakohen of Lublin: “After churban habayis, if you want to find Shechina, look in the beis medrash. If you walk out of the kollel, the yeshiva, the beis medrash, you are on your own. If a Yid conducts his business according to the Shulchan Aruch, that is where the Shechina is. You are just not learning it, but living it. So, everyone in this room, whether they are in the beis medrash learning or going out to work, takes with them the beis medrash.” Rav Lipa Geldwerth, shlit”a, focused on “Inyanei D’Yoma”. He began

with, “Approaching Rosh Hashanah, I think it is extremely important for us to understand that everything happens on Rosh Hashanah.” The Rav discussed how shofar blowing will take place only one day, this year, and quoted the Meshech Chochma in bringing out this point: “The concept of shofar shel ayal is to show that we are joining the Akeida…since we don’t blow the shofar on the first day of Rosh Hashanah this year, we also have an Akeida this year, for we are giving up the segula of the
shofar. Akeida means sacrifice. We are taking that which is dear to us and we’re giving it away for kovod Shabbos and kovod Hashem, and because

we listen to the Chochomim, the Akeida will achieve.” The Rav shared a mashal of Rav Naftali, illustrating it with a true personal story. Rav Geldwerth leased a car and when the company called him a few times, unsuccessfully, regarding returning it, the Rav learned a powerful lesson we can all apply to our outlook on life. The Rav had the rights to first refusal regarding purchasing the car from the leasing company, but he discovered upon returning it - with much disappointment - that his buying option had expired. As his license plate was being removed from the car, the attendant mentioned that if the adjacent couple is not interested in buying the car, perhaps, his boss would offer it back to him. The Rav elaborated. “I said, ‘I don’t understand!’ and he said, ‘What do you mean you don’t understand? Do you know the difference between a purchase and a lease? This car is leased; it’s not yours!’ “Rav Naftali says, on Rosh Hashanah everyone steps forward and they take their keys – to their house, garage, office - along with pictures they have on the keyring - and they put them on the counter. Everything is on the table.
You are not muchzak in anything. On Rosh Hashanah the lease is up! Every single thing that you think you own you don’t own. You leased it – it’s a one-year lease that renews itself, annually, if you are zoche. Do you know the difference between a purchase and a lease?” The Rav continued to rhetorically ask, “Perhaps you were in the hotel business or owned a magnificent string of restaurants or owned real estate on the West Side. What do they look like this year? We lain ‘Hashem pakad es Sora’ on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, and the Akeida on the second. The Abishter gives you a gift. On the second day, we lain the Akeida. Hashem gave Avrohom and Sara a gift, after Sara davened for it so hard and long… but then came the Akeida, where they had to be zoche – again to have Yitzchok returned alive.” The Rav concluded that this is how we should approach the bench -- asking the Abishter’s help that when we put our entire ring of keys with our pictures on the counter, we should be zoche to having them returned to us and, perhaps, with a larger ring and more pictures. A politician was a guest speaker at the golf club dinner. As the politician stood up to speak, a few of the men saw it as an opportunity to sneak off to the bar. An hour later, with the politician still talking, another man joined them. “Is he still talking?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied says the man. “What on Earth is he talking about?” they asked. “I don’t know,” the man answered. “He’s still introducing himself.”

Two Truths and a Lie about Middle Age By Sara Brejt, JD
I
’ll give you three statements. You figure out which two are the truths and which is the lie. 1) We stop thinking we’re going to live forever. 2) Our ability to address our challenges decreases. 3) We can multitask better than ever.
less able to fix those problems.
1) We stop thinking we’re going to live forever TRUE When we’re young, we say things like: “Why not try it? What do I have to lose?” “If Plan A doesn’t work, I can go to Plan B (and then C, D etc...)” ‘Cuz we have all the time in the world. We think. But – as we get older – we start realizing we don’t necessarily have that time. Maybe it’s because of all the people who are no longer with us. Maybe it’s because we don’t have the energy we once had. Maybe it’s because of all the missed opportunities that we’ve witnessed. Whatever the reason. Time becomes more precious. We choose more wisely. Hopefully. I love Gretchen Rubin’s Secret of Adulthood, “The days are long, but the years are short.” Bottom line: Choose to come to terms with reality.
It’s an odd situation because we see more. At the same time, we have less control. The same is true of watching other people. We’ve learned – through our
2) Our ability to address challenges decreases. TRUE As we gain experience in life, we see so many challenges and problems. Things go wrong, lo aleinu. The worriers among us imagine the worst. Even non-worriers invariably notice potential problems. At the same time, we’re less and
Take grandparenting for example. When we’re blessed to become grandparents, we might, at times, be caring for the grandchildren. But we’re not the parents. We don’t have a say in their upbringing. We are observers. Spectators.
are now parents of adult children… or, we’re just the grandparents, or, maybe we are no longer employed. Maybe our health precludes our participating fully. Whatever the situation, our roles may be receding. So…we don’t intervene. We wait to be asked for advice before giving it. We have a growing clarity that we really don’t control anything. Truly, we never had much power to fix things, we just thought we did. (Corona certainly confirmed that for us!)
I love Gretchen Rubin’s Secret of Adulthood, “The days are long, but the years are short.”
life experiences – that certain behaviors can seriously affect relationships. And, yet, we zip our lips. Our appropriate place is on the sidelines. Here’s a favorite analogy: Right around your 40th birthday, you started to hold the paper farther and farther from your eyes. In order to see better. You remember this, don’t you? Just at the time that we don’t see too well from up-close and personal, we are also getting emotionally ready to look at life from afar. I call it “taking the long view.” [As a total digression, I heard that, in Israel, this condition is called “short hand syndrome.” I always thought that was very cute!] Very often, we are the observer, outside the arena of what’s happening. Whether it’s because we
Bottom line: Choose clarity over the illusion of control. 3) You can multitask better than ever. FALSE When the kids were young, we could listen to homework, make supper, keep an eye on two children who were fighting, er, playing, in the other room. All at the same time. But, today, it seems that we can no longer accomplish a few things at once. Even talking on the phone, while cooking, seems hard to do at the same time. What happened? Where did our superb multitasking skills go? James Clear, author of the fantastic new book, Atomic Habits, has much to say about what he calls “The Myth of Multitasking”:
“Yes, we are capable of doing two things at the same time. It is possible, for example, to watch TV while cooking dinner or to answer an email while talking on the phone. “What is impossible, however, is concentrating on two tasks at once. Multitasking forces your brain to switch back and forth very quickly from one task to another.” That’s the point. We can multitask when the activities are those that don’t require concentration. Those that we could accomplish while on autopilot. Like diapering or feeding a baby. Like taking a young child for a ride in the stroller. Today, in middle age, so much of what we do is listening, really listening, to a child, or to a friend. Like discussing how my (or her!) day is going. Or talking over the next step to take in our day, or in life. Or researching shidduchim… It is emotional connecting rather than physical connecting. These require more focus. More concentration. Bottom Line: Choose concentration and focus over multi-tasking. Wishing you a thought-provoking day. P.S. Whether you’d like to send compliments or complaints, please do get in touch with me at Sara@Jewish WomenofWisdom.org. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I’ve been married for almost a decade, however, my best friend since childhood, Leora*, just recently started dating after a very messy divorce. She’s a great girl, very pretty and put together, in her upper 20s. I happen to know that she went through a lot of trauma with her ex-husband and the messy divorce that ensued. When she told me she wanted to start dating again, I was hesitant to tell her but I truly did not think she was ready. She listed reasons for dating such as being lonely, wanting to share her life with someone who would finally be somewhat “normal,” wanting to be able to give all she has to someone new. I could see her being a catch in the machmir dating scene especially amongst other divorcees. I would never get involved if not for the fact that she put me as a reference on her new resume. I do not have the heart to tell her I don’t feel suitable to be a reference, but I really don’t. She is not at a place where she should be dating, and she needs to take time to process her divorce. I also happen to believe she is very unhealthy emotionally and will carry a lot of baggage into her new relationships. What should I do? -Rivka

The Panel The Rebbetzin Rebbetzin Faigie Horowitz, M.S. ivka, you are smart as well as sensitive. And you are sincere in your caring about Leora, both in the short term and long term. My suggestion is to buy time with care and use the sandwich approach in your communication. In other words, I would tell her that I have thought the matter over and would love to help her and be there for her as she tries to find a mate. Empathize and say that, especially given what she went through, you want to be supportive of the next phase of her journey. However, you know that you are going to be asked questions such as whether she has gone through therapy since her divorce, what is her current level of bitterness, and whether she has processed things since her divorce. Tell her that you want to say that she is past it, has been through therapy, and so on and therefore you would be more comfortable serving as a reference after some time has elapsed. You want to be in the best position to be a reference going forward but you think you will do that more effectively after some time has passed. Then, once again, stress how you want to help her, care about her, etc. You can offer to check out guys for her and be helpful to her in other ways. Then go ahead and be a real friend to Leora. Call her regularly. Invite her over. Do girlfriend things with her. Keep her close but bide your time before serving as a reference.

level, they’re also not good enough because people will raise their eyebrows. “Why is she putting someone she barely knows on her resume?” I know this process way too well from the singles I help, and it is not easy. You say, “I do not have the heart to tell her I don’t feel suitable to be a reference.” But I ask you: do you have the heart to watch her dive into another bad marriage? As her best friend since childhood, you have license to tell her that you do not think she is an emotional fit for remarriage right now. Her reasons for remarriage sound as if they are coming out of loneliness; she craves companionship and love. The problem is that below all that is a lot of trauma and pain that are sure to protrude in her next marriage if she does not work through them before dating. Here is an example of a way to start the conversation with her: “Leora, you know I love you like a sister. I’m here for you in every way, I always have and I always will. I got a reference call for you, and I can’t bring myself to answer appropriately. I’ve watched the difficulties you’ve encountered throughout your divorce. It was traumatizing for me to watch you go through that, and even more so how traumatizing it must have been for you to be the one going through it. As your best friend I truly believe working through the emotional rollercoaster you went through with a great therapist will help get you on track for a successful second marriage. At that point, I’ll be able to be more of an effective reference.” She may not thank you now, but she will thank you later.

ou sound like a very good friend. Besides worrying that Leora is not emotionally ready to start dating, you are concerned about handling prospective shidduch reference calls.
Let’s address both issues. First, are you sure that Leora is not yet healthy enough? When she expresses how “she wants to share her life with someone ‘normal’ and wants to share what she has to offer with someone new” that sounds like a person with a practical and a healthy attitude. However, just in case your assessment is correct, here’s my suggestion. Get her to sit down with you for an uninterrupted, face-to-face, girl-togirl talk. Tell her: “You’ve been my best friend for the last 20 years. It’s great that you’ve been able to get out of a bad marriage, but I worry that you’re not fully healed from the trauma that you’ve been through. “When combat soldiers retire, there is a very high incidence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). That’s why the army makes sure that even the toughest, strongest, most battle-hardened veterans get counseling before returning to civilian life. “Leora, you’ve been through a major trauma, and I am worried that you might have a bit of PTSD. Please take my advice and treat yourself to a few sessions of counseling before you start dating again. “Repressing what you’ve gone through isn’t healthy. It’s like having a messy linen closet that’s stuffed with all kinds of junk. You can’t just close the door and go on with your life, because that door will inevitably pop open again, when you least expect it. You need counseling in order to open that closet, go through it carefully, process it, fold everything up neatly, put it all away, and then you can move on with your life.” And be sure to bring a box of tissues for this coffee klatch meeting. But, even if you simply cannot get yourself to have this heart-to-heart talk with your friend, it might still be okay. After your friend starts dating, she may soon realize, all by herself, that: *Second-time relationships are very complex.
Do you have the heart to watch her dive into another bad marriage? *She needs some more time and some more healing before starting a new, serious relationship. Secondly, handling shidduch reference calls shouldn’t really be a problem for you. When asked, simply report all the positives that you know about your friend. You can truthfully report that you’ve known Leora since childhood, she’s always been your very best friend, she’s a beautiful and wonderful person, etc. If a caller asks about her divorce, you can simply reply, “Leora was able to walk away from a bad marriage and she wants to start a new, healthy relationship.” If someone asks for more details, you can either answer that you don’t know, or you can ask Leora how she would like you to respond to those kinds of questions. I hope Leora realizes and appreciates what a special friend you are.

ow, you are asking a tough question. It is not easy to be a reference for someone who is not healthy enough to be married yet. It is even harder to tell that to a friend who trusted you enough to put you down as a reference. You did say that she is your closest friend from childhood. Those friendships tend to be very strong and very deep. It does not mean that negativity and toeles (constructive criticism) won’t hurt and possibly affect the re-

scars that a bad marriage might have caused her, you can be doing tremendous good. I know from these types of conversations that I have had that people initially feel hurt but they also get the message and usually do something with the advice. It is hard to hear anything negative about oneself but it is even harder to experience another pa i n f u l
ear Rivka, Thank you for writing in! I’ve had people schedule one-time sessions with me to discuss very similar situations. So please know that this is quite common, and you are not alone. The advice the panelists have provided in on target, in my opinion. If I had to guess, I’d say you are an excellent friend and Leora is so blessed to have you in her life. Leora has confided in you about her marriage and what she has been through, and you see that your friend has not processed or healed from the trauma of her marriage and divorce. I get the clear impression that you have never told her your feelings about this, otherwise, she may not have asked you to be a reference. There are all different types of friendships. And different friendships have different “unwritten rules.” The unwritten rule in one friendship might be something along the lines of There is No Subject Off Limits, while the unwritten rule in another friendship might be We Share What We Are Going Through But We Do Not Offer Opinions. And then there are some friendships that are much lighter and
the unwritten rule is We Talk About the Kids, Vacations, and Yom Tov Menus. It feels to me as though this new situation you have been put in is testing the boundaries and the status quo of whatever the unwritten rules are in your relationship with Leora. Speaking to Leora openly about your feeling that she may not be ready for a second marriage may be brand new territory. And whenever we are entering brand new relationship territory (be it with a spouse, a friend, a boss, employee or neighbor), we can feel quite scared or terrified of disrupting the friendship to the point of potentially losing this person. Here’s the thing, Rivka... Sometimes pushing the boundary of a friendship can indeed cause the friendship to end. And other times, it can take the friendship to new and beautiful heights with a gorgeous, breathtaking view. Being a reference aside, the deeper issue, in my humble opinion, is that this new situation you have been placed in is going to cause a stir in your friendship. You want the best for Leora, and I also understand
It’s like having a messy linen closet that’s stuffed with all kinds of junk.
and difficult marriage. The shortterm conversation may be a hard one but the long-term goal is what really matters. Remember when you talk to her to take a non-judgmental approach and to express empathy and a deep understanding of where she is coming from. It is not easy but I do encourage you to talk to her. You can be saving her next marriage in the long run. I wish you much luck and pray that your friend heals in all the ways she
needs so that she can then enter a marriage as a fresh “new” person who is developed, someone who is ready to build a healthy and happy bayis ne’eman b’Yisroel.
you not wanting to lie or share what you feel like is an untruth. You don’t want to see your friend, Leora, in potentially what may be a second bad marriage because she is so deeply unhealed from her first. Look, I can share my opinion with you about true friendship, but it is only that...my opinion. The women in my life who are my truest friends tell me like it is – with love and warmth and complete safety. I like it that way. I respect what these women tell me about myself because I value their opinions and feedback and I know in my heart they understand me and want what is best for me. Leora has offered you her story. If I understood correctly, she has shared with you the specifics of her marriage and divorce. So, I ask you to think about what has held you back from giving her your honest feedback until now? I also ask if you are willing to risk feeling uncomfortable or whatever may ensue to potentially help your friend? Personally, I would not make this about being a reference. That’s small potatoes in the grander scheme of things. Have a heart-to-heart with your dear friend, Leora. Ask her how she is doing. Tell her that you know she has been through so much. You can share with her exactly what you shared with us in your email. Let her
know that you feel uncomfortable having this conversation and that she is an adult who will make her own decisions, but that you love her and care for her and you feel like she has some processing and healing to do before she moves on. You would never tell her this if you didn’t care for her so deeply. She may get the hint and drop the reference request immediately. You may not even have to talk about that with her. If she becomes visibly upset, you will be there to comfort and support her. If she becomes defensive or combative, you will know that you pushed past the boundary of the potential for this friendship. You had to speak your truth because you love your friend that much. She will either come back to you after she processes, or she won’t. I also have to mention the slight possibility that you are off in your assessment of your friend. It is possible she has been in therapy throughout, or has been processing on her own and there are things you simply aren’t aware of. This may be revealed to you in your heart-to-heart. Your friendship will either move to the next level, or it will not be able to withstand the situation. Friendships are not static; they are fluid. Some are forever, and some are seasonal. The time is now to have the conversation. Either way, you will have been a good friend. Sincerely, Jennifer Mann, LCSW

The
war had been going for more than two weeks by the time Avi Alazari boarded the decrepit armored personnel carrier that would take him up to Mount Hermon. A member of the elite Golani Brigade’s Reconnaissance Battalion, Alazari had spent the better part of October 1973 desperately attempting to block the advancing Syrian forces on the Golan Heights. The carnage was horrific. Alazari’s teammates fell like flies; by the end of the war, fully 10% of his
platoon would join the 3,000 IDF soldiers who gave up their lives for G-d and country. In what seemed like a never-ending effort, they battled overwhelming odds to push the four Syrian armored divisions out of Israeli territory. “We were in the northern front for the entire war,” recalled Alazari in an interview with TJH. “We participated in all of the battles to halt the Syrians, including a series of extremely harsh battles.” And yet, their heroic stand on the Golan Heights’
killing fields paled in importance to what they were about to embark on. It was time for Israel to take back Mount Hermon from the Syrians, and Elazri’s company was tapped to be the unit to do it.
Fifteen
days earlier, the handful of Golani soldiers tasked with guarding Israel’s top-secret military base on Mount Hermon was awakened by the sound of approaching

69 assault on the Hermon was the opening shot in a joint Egyptian-Syrian surprise attack that caught Israel completely unprepared. Despite an abundance of early warnings, IDF intelligence failed to sound the alert, and Israel was in danger of being overrun only 26 years since its founding. In the south, seven Egyptian armored divisions easily punched through the lightly-defended Bar Lev Line and retook the Suez Canal, killing over 1,000 IDF soldiers on the first day alone. The situation was even worse up north; an invading force of 1,400 Syrian tanks backed by more than 1,000 artillery pieces was met by only 170 tanks and 70 artillery platforms. Reinforcing the few Israeli troops were dozens of lightly armored reservists who had never trained to fight together as a homogenous unit. Over the next two days, the IDF forces on the Golan Heights fought a suicidal battle in a desperate effort to buy time until the reserves could arrive. The 188th Armored Brigade, the unit tasked with protecting the Golan Heights from the Syrian military, was torn to pieces. Outnumbered by a ratio of 8 to 1, 90% of its soldiers were killed within the war’s first 48 hours. For a while, it seemed that the Syrian military would succeed in conquering not only the Golan Heights, but the Galilee as well. The few reinforcements that rushed to the front were badly equipped and shellshocked; for a while, even the road to Haifa was open and Defense Minister Moshe Dayan warned of the looming “destruction of the Third Temple.”
SEPTEMBER 24, 2020
Finally,
Israel began to turn the tide. In a now-legendary effort to hold off the Syrians by Brigadier General Avigdor Kahalani, a ragtag collection of tanks down to their final bullets and operating on different radio frequencies caused the Syrians to retreat. Fresh troops sent to the Golan from the Sinai Desert then joined the fray, pushing the invaders back into Syrian territory. Throughout the weeks of heavy fighting, the Hermon remained in Syrian hands. The effects were devastating; Syrian artillery exploited their newfound height advantage to rain unrelenting fire on Israeli troops fighting below. “From the Hermon you can see all of the Golan spread out before you, and they bombarded us like rats in a cage,” Alazari recalled. “It was simply horrible. They had a ton of artillery and anytime we rested for a bit, we immediately received a horrible artillery barrage.” With the IDF successfully mopping up the remaining Syrian forces on the Golan Heights, the IDF high brass decided that it was time to retake Mount Hermon. It was obvious who would be selected for this challenging mission; the Golani Brigade had been pressuring the military to allow them to storm the compound ever since they were

helicopters. Scrambling to their lookout points, the conscripts were stunned to witness four Soviet-built MI-8 helicopters landing atop the summit and disgorging hundreds of Syrian commandos. The date was October 5, 1973, and the Yom Kippur War had begun. Nicknamed “the eyes and ears of Israel” due to the advanced spy gear atop the towering summit, the Mount Hermon base was and remains crucial to Israel’s security. The significant height advan-

tage it afforded enabled IDF intelligence to easily intercept Syrian radio communications. Its highly advanced radar system could detect soldiers as far away as Damascus. Recognizing the difficulty in quickly moving troops to the remote site, the Hermon base was designed to be impenetrable. With only one road accessing the summit, Syrian troops could expect a fusillade of hellish fire from above. Minefields surrounded the snow-covered mountain, and the base itself was protected by thick walls made of steel-reinforced concrete. In the event of trouble, the soldiers deployed atop the Hermon were instructed to lock themselves in a highly fortified tunnel until reinforcements would arrive. However, the Hermon’s remote location and the misplaced Israeli belief that the Arabs wouldn’t dare attack after their humiliating defeat in 1967 left the post dangerously vulnerable. The base was staffed by only a few dozen soldiers, the majority of them intelligence specialists with no combat experience. The trench system designed to protect the soldiers from an aerial assault was incomplete, and a local Druze spy ring had mapped out the gaps in the minefields. On that cold Yom Kippur morning, even fewer soldiers than usual were on duty as most of their comrades were on leave for the holiday. The 13 Golani soldiers who remained were no match for Syria’s 82nd Paratroop Battalion. Two-hundred enemy commandos landed on the summit, while another 150 made the punishing trek on foot from the Syrian border. The IDF soldiers fought valiantly in a futile effort to save the Hermon from falling to the Syrians. After an intense firefight lasting for hours, the battle ended with the Syrian military firmly in command of “the eyes and ears of Israel.” The loss of the Hermon was catastrophic. Not only did the Syrians overrun the base and capture its highly sensitive equipment, the interrogations of the Israeli POWs gleaned a trove of classified intelligence. In one particularly well-known case, Amos Levinberg, a young officer, spilled so many secrets under interrogation that the damage he caused still echoes today. Possessing the highest possible security clearance, Levingberg “sang” before his captors, revealing for the first time that Israel was listening into all of Syria’s radio communications. Losing the Hermon also caused a severe blow to morale, as it marked the first time that IDF officers surrendered to the enemy while their soldiers were still fighting. Thirteen Israeli soldiers were killed while another 27 were taken prisoner in what the IDF’s official historian later described as “the single most humiliating episode of the Yom Kippur War.” “The fact that they occupied an outpost makes you feel humiliated,” recalled a Golani Brigade soldier who fought on the Hermon, “and your revenge is becomes an answer to your problems.”

humiliated in the opening hours of the war. The first attempt to conquer the Hermon went badly. The IDF mistakenly thought that there were still soldiers trapped on the Hermon outpost and, believing that time was of the essence, decided not to wait until nightfall to launch the attack. Climbing the steep mountain in broad daylight, the 150 Golani troops were exposed to Syrian gunners above. The battle quickly turned into a bloodbath. The hasty counterattack ended in a humiliating defeat, with 23 IDF soldiers losing their lives in the battle. Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Rifai al-Joju, the commander of the Syrian soldiers at the site, later told his captors that he was astonished at “the Israeli stupidity” to assault his position in broad daylight. “I said this before and I’ll say it again. For the Syrians, the battle was simply a shooting gallery,” said Alazari. “They just kept shooting and shooting, and our forces were outnumbered and weren’t able to move. “ “After our battalion commander was killed. We got the order to retreat,” he continued. “I remember driving down the mountainside, our half-tracks loaded with the injured, and I’m trying desperately to help our medic to give them infusions…. “I sat there eating the horrible army food after that battle and said to myself, ‘That’s it. It can’t get more horrible than this,’” Alazari recalled. “But that was only the second day of the war. This was only the first taste of war. After the war really started, this was only the cherry on the top.”

As with the previous failed attempt to wrest control of the Hermon from Syria, it was clear that the Golani Brigade would take the lead. Joining
them was the Paratroopers and the Sayeret Matkal special operations unit, which scouted out Syrian troop movements from a nearby hill. “The ceasefire is close, and we need to work fast. The Hermon is the eyes of the country,” Golani Brigade Commander Amir Drori told his troops before setting off. Unlike the first effort to retake the Hermon, the attack began at nightfall on October 21. The climb was arduous; the soldiers were forced to ascend more than 2,000 meters by foot in challenging terrain during pitch darkness. Adding to the difficulties was the lack of oxygen and the fact that the troops were exhausted after three weeks of fighting. After hours of strenuous climbing, the soldiers were suddenly greeted by heavy incoming fire. The Syrian commandos had been lying in wait and opened up with everything they had on the tired Israeli attackers. Five out of the six tank commanders were killed instantly, along with the commander of the Golani Brigade’s reconnaissance company. “We were in the half-track, and the brigade commander yelled at the battalion commander to jump out of the truck (to assist) or he’ll be forced to do it himself,” Alazari related. “The battalion commander jumped out and was dead before he hit the ground. They got him while he was in the air.” A fierce battle erupted, with soldiers fighting at extremely short distances. The thin mountain air caused bullets to shatter their helmets as the

Golani Brigade pushed relentlessly forward. Golani soldiers who survived the difficult battle later described how the Syrians fought them at point blank range. Often, the two sides were so close that they were unable to use their weapons, resorting to their fists to vanquish their enemies. “I remember sitting in one of the trenches and simply praying that I would lose a hand, lose a foot, an eye even, but that I leave this horror alive,” Alazari are. “You’re there for three weeks and people are getting killed the entire time. You think to yourself, maybe I’ll lose my hand but at least I won’t lose my life. “It was horrible to be in this for three weeks when people around you are dying around you,” added Alazari. “You know that if you lost your hand, it’s bad, but you didn’t lose your life.” Making the mission even more challenging was the fact that the Golani fighters were facing Syria’s top commando units. “Ahmed Rifai al-Joju prepared his forces for this battle for six years,” said Alazari. “These people were experts. He trained them, and they became professionals in war. These weren’t 18-yearolds who only trained for eight months.” At dawn, the tide began to turn. Syrian soldiers began fleeing, while others were taken prisoner. By 11 a.m., an IDF officer announced over the radio that the battle was finally over. “The fighting went on throughout the night. But since Golani was very determined and never agreed to give up, when the sun rose, they saw
that we made it to the top and they simply fled,” recounted Alazari. “They realized that the battle was over.”

IDF suffered heavy losses. No less than 55 Golani Brigade soldiers were killed, out of an invading force of 400. Another 79 were wound-
“The battalion commander jumped out and was dead before he hit the ground. They got him while he was in the air.” ed, while the Paratroopers suffered one dead and four wounded. Despite the monumental losses of life, the mission was accomplished: Mount Hermon was reconquered and remains in Israeli hands until
today. The assault would go down as a one of the most legendary battles in Israeli history. The Golani Brigade, which was then and still is locked in a rivalry with the Paratroopers over prestige, adopted the firefight as a defining moment in its history. From the first day of the war until the final battle on the Hermon, Golani never stopped fighting until the very last inch of Israeli territory was recaptured. Ever since then, raw recruits are made to climb the Hermon via the exact route taken by their forebearers in 1973 in order to receive their unit badge. As for the survivors, they have invested immense efforts to remember their brothers in arms who fell during the bloody Yom Kippur War of 1973. Golani lost 130 soldiers in the Yom Kippur War, including 80 in the multiple attempts to retake the Hermon. From Alazari’s squadron of 20 people, only 12 made it back home alive at the end of the war. “We were looking for the war and we were looking to contribute, do the maximum and win the battle and the war. We told the soldiers that in the Golani no one would dare not conquer Mount Hermon, because in the Golani there is no such thing as not carrying out the mission,” recalled former Golani commander Amir Drori in 2003. “In this war, not everyone made it to the end. There were those who were given a mission and did not exactly perform it in the end. But in Golani, it did not happen.”

he world of law enforcement lost a pioneer last week with the death of Gerald Shur. As a young prosecutor targeting what one member described as “a certain Italian-American subculture,” he realized his informants would be more likely to testify on Monday morning if they weren’t afraid of winding up dead on Monday afternoon. Shur’s insight led to the birth of the U.S. Marshals Witness Security Program, better known as Witness Protection. He wrote the manual on the program, decided who to accept, and took credit for helping jail over 10,000 card-carrying bad guys. Today, the program counts more than 8,600 witnesses – mostly criminals – as “alumni.” According to their website, “No Witness Security Program participant, following program guidelines, has been harmed or killed while under the active protection of the U.S. Marshals Service.” Of course, some witnesses literally can’t get with the program. Mobster Henry Hill, for example, immortalized in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, indiscreetly posed for newspaper photos while operating a horse-drawn carriage business on Cincinnati’s Fountain Square. (So much for living like a schnook.) Tax cheats typically wear suits instead of stripes. They commit their
crimes with the stroke of a pen or the click of a mouse instead of knives or guns. But confidentiality can be just as valuable to help the IRS catch white-collar offenders, too — even though it’s not quite so cloak-anddagger. The IRS naturally encourages whistleblowers to rat out their partners in crime. There’s even a form for reporting tax cheats: Form 3949-A. The IRS gets tens of thousands of
lic’s right to know their identity. There’s a whole series of cases with names like Whistleblower 1562816W v. Commissioner splitting those hairs. (In that case, the Court let a whistleblower alleging 3$ billion in fraud provide information anonymously but ruled that if he wound up collecting a potential billion-dollar bounty, that might change.) Code Section 7623 requires the
He wound up serving 40 months in a federal penitentiary for his part in the scheme but went on to claim a $104 million bounty.
reports every year and investigates about 5% of them. Section C of that form lets you choose whether or not to identify yourself. The Tax Court sometimes lets whistleblowers proceed anonymously if they can show that the danger in cooperating (like when the target is mobbed up) outweighs the pub-
IRS to reward informants with 1530% of whatever they collect in certain cases. (File Form 211 to apply.) Typically, they pay out $50-100 million in rewards per year. Bradley Birkenfeld was a Swiss banker helping clients avoid tax on hidden accounts when he blew the whistle on his employer. He wound up serving
40 months in a federal penitentiary for his part in the scheme but went on to claim a $104 million bounty. (That’s a tradeoff a lot of people would be happy to make.) Sadly, disappearing into witness protection won’t help you outrun your tax bill. U.S. Marshals give you a new Social Security number, which you’ll use to keep filing returns. The program used to be legendarily generous – Jimmy “the Weasel” Fratianno’s wife got plastic surgery, a facelift, and dental work. But today’s fugitives can expect about $60,000 in “getting started” money and six months’ of allowance until it’s back to work. (Maybe that’s why about 20% of witnesses keep committing crimes after going underground.) There’s no “lesson” in this week’s story – no grand strategy to help you if you choose a life of crime, then decide the only way to “retire” is to rat out a bigger crook. Just take comfort in knowing that whatever fresh adventures the rest of 2020 may bring, you’ll finish the year with the same name as you started!
