Bills vs. Ravens game preview

quoth the raven

“I said to Coach [John Harbaugh] at the end of [last week’s] game, ‘We’re not there yet, but we’re working towards it.’ I think there were a lot of things we could learn from the game – a lot of things we can learn from the [previous week], too. So, we fix these things, and we keep stacking good plays. Bad plays will happen, but stacking as many good ones as we can and not having those lapses

The Baltimore Ravens (2-1) host the Buffalo Bills (2-1) in a showdown featuring two of the AFC’s top teams. Today marks the Ravens’ fourth-straight game against an AFC East foe, with Baltimore already earning wins at NE (Week 3) and NYJ (Week 1), with a heartbreaking Week 2 loss vs. Miami sandwiched in between. This is Buffalo’s third road game of the 2022 campaign, with the Bills dropping a tight 21-19 decision at Miami last week.

Behind another stellar effort from QB Lamar Jackson, who accounted for 5 total TDs (4 passing & 1 rushing), Baltimore upended the host Patriots, 3726, last Sunday. Jackson threw for 218 yards and rushed for 107 (his secondstraight game eclipsing the ground century mark), becoming the first player in NFL history to record 3+ passing TDs and 100+ rushing yards in back-toback games. TE Mark Andrews tallied a game-high 8 catches for 89 yards and 2 TDs, while the defense came up big in clutch moments by forcing 4 turnovers (3 INTs & 1 FR), including 3 in the fourth quarter alone. Baltimore scored 5 TDs on 5 red zone trips, limiting New England to 3-of-5 and holding the Patriots to 2-of-9 (22.2%) on third down.

The Ravens are 6-3 in regular season play vs. Buffalo, winning three straight. Under head coach John Harbaugh, Baltimore is 4-1 vs. the Bills during the regular season. In the playoffs, the Ravens are 0-1, losing in the 2020 Divisional round at Buffalo (17-3).

numbers to note

1 – Player (QB Lamar Jackson) in NFL history to record 3+ passing TDs and 100+ rushing yards in back-to-back games (Week 2 vs. Mia. & Week 3 at NE).

4 – Total TDs scored (3 rec. & 1 KOR) by WR Devin Duvernay, tying (five players) for the NFL’s most, entering Week 4.

33.0 – Points per game the Ravens are averaging this season, ranking No. 1 in the NFL, entering Week 4. Baltimore has scored an NFL-best 13 TDs.

28.3 – An NFL-best yards-percatch average for WR Rashod Bateman, entering Week 4. Bateman has reeled in 8 catches for 226 yards, including TD strikes of 55 & 75 yards.

In his 15th season leading Baltimore, head Coach Harbaugh is the NFL’s third-longest tenured head coach, behind only Bill Belichick (23 seasons) and Mike Tomlin (16). Harbaugh has guided the Ravens to 150 total wins since his 2008 arrival, ranking as the league’s fifth most. (Harbaugh owns an impressive 150-97 overall record.)

on baltimore’s greg roman-led offense:

“Greg is really good at taking what you have and putting it together in a way that makes it really tough to defend. If you ask any defensive coordinator or head coach in this league, they’ll tell you that this offense is hard to defend. So, that’s a pretty a good measuring stick right there. Now, executing and then keeping it going and coming up with ways to keep people off balance – that’s what coaches do, that’s what coordinators do. I really believe Greg is one of the very best in the business at that.”

charmed city

A wise man once said, “Wisdom is not a product of schooling, but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” Wisdom can also be defined as the quality of having experience, knowledge and good judgement. That’s the revolving theme when people within the Ravens organization – especially young players – and the Baltimore community speak of defensive tackle Calais Campbell.

“These young guys grew up watching Calais Campbell,” head coach John Harbaugh recently stated. “So, it’s very meaningful to get a word of wisdom from him. That’s what the league is –it’s a mentoring league. That’s one of the great things I love about the NFL.”

Campbell’s 15 years of NFL experience allow him to provide effective feedback and insight to the players who will come after him. The knowledge he has about the game of football, and the game of life, has undoubtedly earned him the respect of fellow teammates and coaches. With Campbell approaching the career 100-sack milestone, many believe his good judgement on the field will grant him a ticket to Canton, Ohio.

“Calais, he’s an all-timer. He’s going to be putting on a gold jacket one day, and he’s a Walter Payton Man of the Year,” defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald declared. “Just to have him in the room – a guy that’s been around the block and can give me guidance, work with us as coaches and help the young guys progress –that’s invaluable.”

Since their 1996 inception, the Ravens have always prided themselves on being stalwarts along the defensive

front. Campbell’s mentorship and drive for excellence helps carry on that tradition instilled by franchise greats of the past – like Michael McCrary, Tony Siragusa, Kelly Gregg and Haloti Ngata.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Calais,” assistant head coach/defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, another former standout Ravens D-lineman, exclaimed. “His knowledge of the game is immense. He can take in everything from a presnap perspective and use it to his advantage, where a lot of younger players can’t.”

Campbell often emphasizes the importance of reaching back to help guide the next generation of athletes. He’s always one of the last to leave the practice field, devoting extra time to teaching the techniques of his craft to a crop of young talent that eagerly listens.

“He’s a Year 15 guy, so he knows the ins and outs of the National Football League,” defensive tackle Justin Madubuike affirmed. “The best advice he gave me is to just keep working, don’t get satisfied, stay hungry.”

From the moment Campbell became a Raven, his commitment to bringing another championship to Baltimore was clear and understood. He was able to get a taste of the Super Bowl during his 2008 rookie season, however, his Arizona Cardinals fell short to the Pittsburgh Steelers in that title game. Now, Campbell is more determined than ever to make a return to the big stage.

“When I was watching the Super Bowl [this past February], it definitely was like, ‘Man, I could see it,’” Campbell recalled. “I’ve always had that vision of playing [in the game]. I played in it when I was a rookie, and I’ve always wanted to get back. I’ve had that vision of playing there with this team. I think we have unfinished business.”

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that Super Bowl LVII is set to take place in Arizona – at the same stadium where Campbell spent the first nine years of his career. If the stars align as he hopes, how fitting it would be for the wise old soul to close the chapter to a Hall of Fame-worthy career.
