Kicking off Week 1 with a 24-9 victory at the NY Jets, QB Lamar Jackson threw 3 TDs, including a 55-yard strike to WR Rashod Bateman and 2 scores (25 & 17 yards) to WR Devin Duvernay. Jackson was 17-of-30 for 213 yards, earning his 38th regular season win, tying (Tom Brady & Danny White) for the third most in the first 50 starts of an NFL QB’s career. Baltimore’s defense was stout against New York, limiting the Jets to 2-of-14 on third down, notching 3 sacks and 11 QB hits of QB Joe Flacco, and forcing 2 turnovers (INT by S Marcus Williams & FR by CB Marlon Humphrey).
Ravens travel to New England (Week 3) and then host Buffalo (Week 4).

“We feel like we have leadership throughout the roster, especially with our veteran players, and we feel like we want to honor that and recognize that, that we’re a team, and that we have a team of leaders. Every person out there on that field is a captain in their own right. Certainly, there are levels to that. You have veteran guys who are our veteran leaders, but we also have some younger leaders who have an opportunity to walk out there and to lead the team into a game, which is a really big deal.”

From a historical perspective, the latter part of the previous sentence might raise a few eyebrows, but long are the days of NFL tight ends deployed almost exclusively as extra O-linemen, tasked with the occasional hitch or hook route. Tight ends today are as versatile as ever, possessing a deft feel for the game, the blocking and protection skills of a tackle and the pass-catching and route-running abilities of a receiver.
And for the Ravens, tight ends are as vital as ever, too.
With a 6-5, 247-pound athletic frame, Andrews certainly appears every bit the modern-day NFL tight end, but he doesn’t just look the part. Andrews plays the part; he is the part.
“His competitive nature is so impressive to me,” fellow tight end Nick Boyle highlighted about Andrews. “That’s what inspires me – is just how hard he works. He just has this edge to him; he just has this competitive nature. If one play
presents to linebackers, safeties and defensive coordinators alike –and understandably so. Still, though easily overlooked by novice eyes, to the trained eye, Andrews’ impact as a blocker is plentiful.
by dan horowitz
Beyond his tangible impact, which can be measured in box scores, charted on spreadsheets and logged into databases, Andrews is an unquestioned leader on this Ravens team – a leader by action and example.
doesn’t go right, he gets fired up, or if he makes a play, he gets fired up. That stuff is contagious.”
NFL players are among the world’s best athletes, but NFL tight ends might just be the cream of the crop.
In 2021, Andrews led NFL tight ends in all major receiving categories, including receiving yards (1,361), receptions (107), touchdowns (nine, tied), first downs (75), 20-yard catches (20) and contested catches (18). His 107 receptions and 1,361 receiving yards set a new franchise single-season record, and each ranked third most by a tight end in league history.
“It’s shown up a lot,” offensive coordinator Greg Roman discussed of Andrews’ blocking. “His perimeter blocking has been very dominant at times, which has sprung a lot of big plays.”
For the rare proven commodity who showcases such a spirit in practice, an even rarer few do it out of love. But for Andrews, that’s exactly what drives him.
Mark andrews:
With Andrews’ historical output in the passing game, his ascent as a blocker has been superseded in headlines by the nightmarish mismatch he
Andrews’ work ethic is striking. In practice, his motor resembles that of an undrafted player fighting for his last chance to make it, attacking every drill with an unmatched intensity. He doesn’t take plays off, let alone days off.
The Ravens put a “premium” on blocking, Roman went on to explain, and Andrews’ “chiseled, rocked-up, yoked-up” stature – a transformation from his 2018 rookie campaign – has helped allow that element of his game, and in part, the offense, to shine.
