GAME PREVIEW THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2017, 8:25 PM
VS.
FAST FACTS • The Baltimore Ravens (3-4) host the Miami Dolphins in a Thursday night primetime showdown at M&T Bank Stadium. The Ravens look to bounce back from twoconsecutive defeats, while the Dolphins have won three straight. • Thursday marks the fifth-consecutive year these teams face each other, with Baltimore capturing wins in three of the past four meetings (including a 38-6 triumph in Charm City last season). The regular season series is tied, 6-6, however, the Ravens are 2-0 in postseason play. • Last Sunday, Vikings K Kai Forbath kicked 6 FGs, and the Minnesota defense suffocated the Ravens’ offense in Baltimore’s 24-16 loss at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Ravens played without starting WRs Jeremy Maclin (shoulder) and Breshad Perriman (concussion), plus reserve WR Chris Matthews (thigh). Then, WR Mike Wallace suffered a concussion on the game’s second possession, leaving the Ravens with just three healthy players at the position, one of whom (WR Griff Whalen) had signed earlier that week. The Vikings sacked QB Joe Flacco 5 times and did not allow a TD until the final play of the game when Flacco hit WR Chris Moore with a 13-yard strike. K Justin Tucker converted 3 FGs, including a 57-yarder in the first half.

QUOTH THE RAVEN “I take more blame for that than anything, because I know how we’re supposed to play. I know how it is supposed to look. I am just extremely frustrated and disappointed. But we can’t concede, because we’re not out yet. The magic can still happen. We only have two AFC losses. We saw in 2012 what momentum can do; we just have to get momentum rolling on our side. We have to stick in there and get this fixed.” – OLB Terrell Suggs on living up to the Ravens’ defensive standard

MATCHUP WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Baltimore Ravens welcome the Miami Dolphins to M&T Bank Stadium for a Thursday night primetime showdown. Baltimore, 5-0 under head coach John Harbaugh on Thursday home games, is looking to break a two-game skid, while Miami is riding a three-game win streak. The Ravens’ defense remains committed to stopping the run and will be challenged by another top running back in Miami’s Jay Ajayi, who leads the team with 442 rushing yards.

“The thing I really expect and admire about this team – and the leadership of this team – is that we have a [team meeting] room that [takes accountability]. We don’t have guys who are crossing their arms and turning their heads sideways or pointing the finger. Everybody in the room has clarity toward the accountability part of what we have to do. When you do that, you have a chance to get somewhere.”

BALTIMORERAVENS.COM 21
EVER HEARD THE HOWL OF A LONE WOLF LATE AT NIGHT UNDER A FULL MOON? Well, even if you haven’t, you can hear in your head what it might sound like, right? On fall days when the weather is cool, Ravens players, coaches, staff and anyone else around the team’s practice facility has the distinct opportunity to hear a loud HOWL … No, it’s not a lone wolf. It’s All-Pro kicker Justin Tucker. As he exits the Ravens’ locker room and sprints onto the practice field, Tucker lets out his signature howl. It’s his way of announcing the start of another practice; it’s his way of keeping his teammates on their toes; it’s his way of keeping the mood light. “It’s just his personality,” says punter Sam Koch. “We’ve come to enjoy it and embrace it.” Adds long snapper Morgan Cox: “We think [his personality] is what also makes him great. It keeps his confidence level high, keeps the mood high and keeps all of us loose. And, we’re able to do what we do.”
Indeed, the “Wolfpack,” as Tucker coined the trio back when he was a rookie in 2012, does what they do, and they do it with extraordinary success. Consider these facts: In the NHL, hockey players average a shooting percentage of 9.1 – for every 100 shots they take, only nine of them are goals. … A Major League Baseball player is viewed as great when he gets a hit 30 percent of the time. … And even the most accurate quarterback in NFL history, Drew Brees, completes only 66.7% of his passes. Depending on the week, Tucker is either the first- or second-most accurate kicker in NFL history. He has connected on a staggering 89.4% of his field goal attempts. Let’s break down the entire field goal process. Everything must run to perfection. The Snap. The Hold. The Kick. When Cox snaps the ball, he is expected
WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON BEING HIGHLY EFFICIENT.
– Justin Tucker
K Justin Tucker is the NFL’s second-most accurate kicker of all time, hitting on 178 of 199 FGAs to produce an 89.4 success rate. In 2016, he connected on 38 of 39 FGAs (lone miss was a block), posting the fifth-best pct. (97.4) in NFL single-season history.

to succeed nearly 100 percent of the time. If it’s a bad snap, sometimes the group can recover, but Cox, who has been the team’s long snapper since 2010, succeeds at an insane rate.
“The expectation around us, we know, is very high,” says Tucker. “But, I don’t think people really understand the pressure that we put on ourselves to be, not just good, but to be great.”
Likewise, the holder, Koch, who has also consistently been amongst the league leaders in punting for over a decade, has the significant role of handling the snap and then positioning the football with “12 O’clock laces,” all in a very short, pressurized time frame. The success rates for both Cox and Koch are simply astounding. But, we’ve all come to expect it.
Part of the reason we have such a high expectation of these specialists is that they make it look so easy. The truth is, the trio works extremely hard at its craft. “The idea of making it look easy lies in hours and hours of hard work on and off the field, studying yourself, testing yourself physically and pushing the limits,” reveals Tucker. “We pride
The group’s three unique personalities seem to gel exceptionally well. They place high expectations on each other, yet know how and when to support one another when a part of the process might be struggling. Having spent countless hours together both on and off the field, they’ve built a chemistry over the years that allows them to encourage each other in individual ways. “We demand [excellence] out of each other every day, and I think that’s an indication of the character that all three of us carry into our work,” explains Cox. “We all hold each other accountable for every step of the process,” adds Koch. That accountability helps keep them grounded in the rare and exclusive NFL environment in which they have thrived.

And moreover, now that all three are fathers (Tucker and Cox both became dads in the last couple of years, and Koch is the father of four), they truly understand the importance of accountability and staying grounded for their families. No matter how successful they are on the field, being a husband and father are the most important roles in their lives. “As soon as [my son] Easton came to be, I felt like I got instant clarity as far as what’s the most important thing I could be doing,” acknowledges Tucker. “It’s the most important role that I’ll assume, and everything else is secondary. At the same time, football is really, really important, and making kicks is the best way that I can support my family.” Now in his sixth NFL season, Tucker has evolved both as a man and as one the NFL’s all-time best kickers. His “howling” success has been the result of a strong work ethic, supportive and exceptional teammates and a spirited personality.

RAVENS WELCOME SPECIAL GUESTS The Baltimore Ravens welcome both the Reuland and Carew families to M&T Bank Stadium. These families share a unique bond: Last year, an aneurysm took former Ravens TE Konrad Reuland’s life at just 29 years old, but he gave the gift of life to MLB Hall of Famer Rod Carew through the donation of his organs. The very special story is below.
HEART OF A RAVEN Former Ravens TE Konrad Reuland passed away in California on Dec. 12, 2016 at the age of 29. Reuland suffered a brain aneurysm in November and fought for his life for over two weeks. Stated head coach John Harbaugh: “We love Konrad Reuland. Every single guy in the locker room loves him and knows him.” Reuland spent portions of the 2014-15 seasons on Baltimore’s practice squad and active roster after playing for the Jets in 2012-13. He played in four contests with the Ravens during the 2015 campaign. For his entire career, the former Stanford standout saw action in 30 NFL games (four starts), posting 12 catches for 90 yards.

Three days after Reuland’s death, Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Rod Carew received a new heart and kidney after more than a year of health issues. All he knew was that the organs came from a 29-year-old male donor who had died at UCLA Medical Center. All Reuland’s family knew was that Konrad’s heart and left kidney had gone to a 71-year-old man in Southern California.
KONRAD REULAND 1987-2016
Incredibly, both families soon connected the dots and realized that Carew’s heart and kidney had come from Reuland. In the weeks after Konrad’s passing, his family finally met Carew. When Konrad’s mother, Mary, first saw Rod, she greeted him warmly with a big hug and said, “You’re part of our family now.”

Renaissance Academy This summer, the Baltimore Ravens completed a $1.5 million renovation project at Renaissance Academy High School in Baltimore City. The Ravens decided to fund the restoration after multiple news stories highlighted the students’ and community’s dedication to the school, amid fears it would be forced to close. Ravens president Dick Cass, TE Benjamin Watson and Ravens Ring of Honor member Ed Reed joined Baltimore City mayor Catherine Pugh, CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools Dr. Sonja Brookins Santelises and University of Maryland, Baltimore president Jay Perman to celebrate the improvements made to the high school over the past several months.
10/9
Ravens players, including LS Morgan Cox, QB Joe Flacco, CB Marlon Humphrey and S Tony Jefferson, joined officers from the Baltimore City Police Department for a “ridealong” to visit several schools and neighborhoods.
10/9 To celebrate the team’s annual women’s event, A Purple Evening, players, including OLB Matthew Judon (right) and DB/LB Anthony Levine Sr. (left), participated in different activities, such as autograph sessions, around the stadium with female fans.
services to students, a new food pantry and laundry room to provide critical resources for students in need, a new and inviting lobby at the school’s entryway, updated science and art rooms and the addition of a large student common area, designed for studying and socializing amongst classmates. In addition, cosmetic and beautification projects were completed throughout the school, including fresh paint, new lighting and graphics, which feature inspirational quotes. Renaissance Academy was founded in 2005 with the vision of establishing a high school that would serve students from all over Baltimore city and offer a college preparatory curriculum.
The highlights of the reconstruction included creating larger classrooms to increase private space for social workers and mentors to provide counseling
“Thanks to the courageous investment from the Baltimore Ravens, there is no doubt that the children in this school and in this beloved community will deliver equal returns. We always speak to ‘changing the outcome,’ and we are humbled by the leap of faith taken by the entire Ravens organization.” – Nikkia Rowe Principal Renaissance Academy
10/16 The Ravens hosted the third annual Purple Sip ‘N Paint night at M&T Bank Stadium to further promote the team’s Crucial Catch efforts, with emphasis on breast cancer. OLB Tyus Bowser (above right) and G/C Ryan Jensen (above left) took part in the night’s festivities.
10/16
The Ravens hosted 100 students from Maree G. Farring Elementary School (Baltimore, Md.) to the sixth annual Hometown Huddle TEAM Challenge at UA House at Fayette.
“We recognize the importance of strengthening our community, and are committed to contributing in as many ways as we can. Our players do an amazing job connecting with Baltimore and supporting its causes. Our fans and community mean the world to us and without them, we could not do our job. It is an honor to give back to such a great city.” – Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh
