RB GUS

EDWARDS

quoth the raven “The Ravens have been continuously trending upward all season, and they have dominating wins against good teams. Lamar Jackson is playing the best ball of his career under offensive coordinator Todd Monken, and Mike Macdonald might be the best defensive coordinator in the league right now. They are a well-coached team with talent and depth at every position led by an MVP-worthy quarterback.” – The Athletic’s Ted Nguyen on the Ravens

Winners of four straight games, the Baltimore Ravens (7-2) host the Cleveland Browns (5-3) for a divisional showdown from M&T Bank Stadium today. Baltimore is tied with Kansas City for the conference’s top record (7-2), while all the three teams behind the Ravens in the AFC North each own 5-3 marks. (The AFC North is the NFL’s only division with each team sporting a winning record.) The Ravens are 7-2 for the fourth time in franchise history (also 2019, 2012 & 2006), earning a playoff berth in each of the previous three such seasons. Baltimore leads the all-time series vs. Cleveland, 36-13. Under head coach John Harbaugh, the Ravens are 25-6 vs. the Browns, including 13-2 in Charm City. In Week 4 earlier this season, Baltimore upended the host Browns, 28-3, when QB Lamar Jackson accounted for 4 total TDs (2 passing & 2 rushing), with the defense tallying 4 sacks and 3 INTs. In last Sunday’s 37-3 victory over the Seahawks, Baltimore’s defense permitted 0 TDs, a season-low 151 total yards (123 passing & 28 rushing) and just six first downs, holding Seattle to 1-of-12 (8.3%) on third down. The Ravens registered season highs in total yards (515), rushing yards (298) and first downs (29). (The 298 rushing yards rank as the fourth most in a game during the team’s 28-year history.)

NUMBERS TO NOTE 17 – Rushing TDs by Baltimore this season, tying Miami for the NFL’s most. The Ravens’ rushing offense ranks No. 1 in the NFL, averaging 160.3 yards per game. 7.5 – A career-high sacks by

DT Justin Madubuike this season, also making the NFL’s most among all interior D-linemen. (Aaron Donald & Chris Jones are second with 5.5 sacks.)

+115 – The top-ranked point differential in 2023 for the Ravens, who have outscored opponents 239-124. Baltimore also ranks second in yards-per-play differential (+1.63). The Ravens “D” has allowed a league-low 4.08 yards per play, while the “O” owns the fifth-best ypp average (5.71). 10.0 – Points allowed per game

at home (in four games) by the Ravens this season. Baltimore has only permitted 2 TDs from scrimmage at M&T Bank Stadium in 2023.

This season, Baltimore ranks No. 1 in the NFL in points allowed per game (13.8), while the Ravens are sixth in scoring (26.6 ppg). 2023 baltimore ravens gameday | 5

PATRICK QUEEN:

ROOTED IN HISTORY,

LIVING IN THE PRESENT BY NOAH TYLUTKI

10 | 2023 baltimore ravens gameday

AS HE DOES PRIOR TO EVERY GAME, Patrick Queen stands on the sideline during the national anthem wearing his game face, with his eye black flowing from the bridge of his nose to underneath his deep hazel eyes and across his cheeks, extending to cover the lower part of his face, giving him a fierce look of relentless aggression. It’s also a look of disciplined confidence and maturity that has been a lifetime in the making. For the 24-year-old Queen, it all began in his hometown of Ventress, Louisiana, in Pointe Coupée Parish, where the oldest settlement on the lower Mississippi River’s motto states, “Rooted in history. Reaching for the future.” Although for Queen, he has chosen to live in the present. His history derives from a long path that eventually led him to Baltimore. Queen’s mother, Mary Sue, and father, Dwayne, tried for over three years to have a baby. They consider him their “miracle baby.” As Patrick grew, Dwayne would train his son hard in the summers, having him do sled pulls up a Mississippi River levee. That intense training helped morph Patrick into an All-State running back for Livonia High School, leading the Wildcats to a state title in 2015. However, LSU recruited him to play linebacker, where he did not start full time until his junior year. That season, they won the CFP National Championship, and Patrick earned the game’s Defensive MVP honors. The Ravens, entrenched in defensive excellence, reached for their future by taking Queen in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He became the secondyoungest player to ever start a game in team history at just 21 years and one month old. Since then, his impact has grown, and he is now an integral member on one of the league’s top defenses.

While his future is uncertain, as he is in the final year of his contract, Queen remains present, relishing the opportunity to be grounded in the here and now. “I’m proud of my journey,” Queen stated. “It was hard to make it where I’m from. I’m just taking in every day and not looking into the future too much. I’m trying to be in the now. Everything’s just about being in the present.” Queen admits he’s come a long way since the self-proclaimed “raw” player he was when drafted. After starting as ‘Mike’ linebacker for most of his rookie year, he switched to his more natural position of ‘Will’ linebacker in his second season. By Year Three in 2022, everything started to click even more. “I learned to be more patient, trust my instincts and play under control,” Queen remarked. “I used to try and make every play, and it put me in bad situations, like always trying to make a big hit instead of making a sure tackle.”

That season, Queen was reunited with his original linebackers coach and new Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald to whom he credits with helping him blossom into the player he is now. “Mike gave me confidence and made the gameplan clearer,” Queen said. “The biggest thing was just him being in my corner and giving me the utmost confidence to go out there and do my job.” Queen has continued to make his mark on the Ravens’ defense, ranking second on the team with 75 tackles. His maturation has been on full display, and he’s as locked in on the moment as ever before – not looking back nor reaching for the future.

JOHN SIMPSON

eVerMOre

After signing with Baltimore last December, G John Simpson earned the starting left guard position along the Ravens’ offensive line during the 2023 training camp. Simpson, who won a National Championship while playing for the 2018 Clemson Tigers, entered the NFL in 2020 after being drafted in the fourth round by the Las Vegas Raiders. Get to know more about him below:

What/who is your biggest motivation?  My wife, Aliyah, my mom, Keyonna and my newborn son, John Lucas. My son is definitely my biggest motivation, but all of them together, definitely.

What do you like to do on your off day?  I like to hang out with family, my dogs and just relax as much as I can.

College or pro, what is your favorite road stadium to play in?  The best one I played in in college was Texas A&M [Kyle Field]. In the NFL, the best place I’ve played in is probably SoFi Stadium.

Do you have a favorite podcast, or do you prefer listening to music while driving?  I listen to Theo Von’s podcast [This Past Weekend] a lot whenever I’m on a long drive. I also listen to some hip hop, rap and R&B. The Teskey Brothers – they’re really good. They have old school vibes. I like that vibe, too.

What is an underrated snack food?  Gushers. I love Gushers, but I feel like they’ve gone away in the past few years. Gushers are the go-to for sure. They’re just good. (laughter)

If you could be a teammate of any football player in their prime, who would it be?  Pat Ricard, my boy. (laughter) I would also say anybody in this locker room right now, I would love to be their teammate again. (laughter)

Do you have any hidden talents?  Not that I can think of. I whistle a little bit, but I don’t think I’m that good. I wouldn’t call it a talent.

Do you have any nicknames among family/friends/teammates?  Most of the O-line calls me ‘BBJ’ – Big Bad John. I didn’t give myself that nickname, I promise. It’s funny. (laughter)

Ravens players, including ILB Roquan Smith (above), teamed up with Flags of Valor and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) for the second annual Flags with the Flock.

To celebrate the NFL’s Salute to Service (STS) initiative, the Ravens host various events and programs throughout the year to honor veterans, military members and their families. On Nov. 6, the Baltimore Ravens partnered with GEHA to host the annual Youth Football and Military Combine at the U.S. Naval Academy. Nearly 200 pre-registered youth participants competed in the clinic that provided football drills with a military twist. Five players were joined by Ravens cheerleaders and Poe for the annual event!

Earlier this year, the Ravens hosted the second annual Flags with the Flock. Ravens players teamed up with Flags of Valor and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) to recognize five families at the Under Armour Performance Center. Each family created a personalized wooden American Flag and received a custom Ravens jersey honoring its fallen service member. The team nominated the Ravens Cheerleaders for the NFL’s Salute to Service Award. Over the 25-plus years that the team’s cheerleading program has been in operation, the Baltimore Ravens Cheerleaders have participated in 24 overseas tours to support our troops abroad including an extended stay in London a few weeks ago to visit several U.S. military troops deployed at bases all over the United Kingdom.

On gameday, the Marching Ravens can be found at their pregame concert at Oriole Park, marching down RavensWalk and through the tailgate lots, and performing in the stadium throughout gameday. In addition to performing at Ravens home games, the ensemble continues to be deeply involved in the Maryland community, appearing at several parades and events throughout the year. Truly a Maryland tradition and a Pro Football Institution. For information and to schedule an appearance, visit:

RISE & CONQUER

The Ravens’ live mascots, Rise and Conquer, live in the Animal Embassy at the Maryland Zoo. These important birds aren’t able to travel due to a dangerous avian flu. But you can meet other Zoo animals along Ravens walk before each home game. For more information, visit:
