After 20 years together... there’s nothing we can’t tackle. Trusted medical team of the Ravens. And you.

QUOTH THE RAVEN

“He’s really changed the way that guys play the game. But make no mistake about it, he can throw the snot out of the football. I’ve got a lot of respect for him, a lot of love for him. I love watching him play, because every play is never dead with him; he’s got a crazy ability to keep plays alive and make guys miss and then get the ball downfield. He’s a special player.”

— Bills QB Josh All en on QB Lamar Jackson

The “Battle of the Beltway” renews when the Baltimore Ravens (3-2) host the Washington Commanders (4-1) –with each team leading their respective division – in a 1 p.m. showdown from M&T Bank Stadium today. The Ravens are riding a three-game winning streak, while Washington has secured four straight victories.

In his 17th season with the Ravens, John Harbaugh stands as the NFL’s secondlongest-tenured coach (Mike Tomlin – 18). Harbaugh has led Baltimore to 11 playoff berths, winning Super Bowl XLVII in 2012 and producing a 175111 overall record (including playoffs). Coach Harbaugh is 2-2 vs. Washington, while the Ravens are 4-3 all time against their neighbors to the south.

NUMBERS TO NOTE

572 – NFL-leading rushing yards for RB Derrick Henry through Week 5. Henry is averaging 6.0 yards per run.

211.2 – Baltimore owns the NFL’s No. 1 rush offense (211.2 ypg). The Ravens also are allowing the fewest rushing yards on defense (60.4 ypg) and have posted a +754 rushing yards differential.

Entering Week 6, Washington (31.0) and Baltimore (29.4) rank No. 1-2 in the NFL, respectively, in points per game. The Ravens are led by two-time MVP QB Lamar Jackson, who’s been superb both passing (1,206 yards, 9 TDs, 1 INT, 107.3 rating) and rushing (363 yards & 2 TDs). Baltimore is also bolstered by RB Derrick Henry, who leads the league in rushing yards (572) and total TDs (7, tied). Washington is guided by standout rookie QB Jayden Daniels – the first player in league history with 1,000+ passing yards and 250+ rushing yards through his first five NFL games.

In a thrilling 41-38 OT win last Sunday in Cincinnati, Baltimore overcame three 10-point second-half deficits, with K Justin Tucker hitting a game-tying 56yard FG to force OT and then a 24-yarder to seal the victory. Tucker’s final FG was set up by a 51-yard Henry rumble on

38 – Consecutive games Baltimore has rushed for 100+ yards, the NFL’s longest active streak. It also marks the thirdlongest streak in NFL history.

75% – Baltimore’s offense ranks No. 2 (tied w/ Cle.) in the NFL in red zone TD percentage (75.0). In their last 15 red zone trips, the Ravens have scored 14 TDs.

119.4 – QB Lamar Jackson’s passer rating in the red zone this season, producing 8 passing TDs and 0 INTs. Jackson is also yet to be sacked on 22 of his red zone dropbacks.

Baltimore’s second OT possession, as “The King” finished with 92 ground yards and 1 TD on 15 carries. Jackson completed 26-of-42 passes for 348 yards, 4 TDs (including 2 to TE Isaiah Likely) and 0 INTs (119.9 rating).

ON IMPROVEMENT FROM THREE STRAIGHT WINS AFTER AN 0-2 START:

“I like where we’re at. It kind of goes together. We were in a good place, and we’re in a better place now, because we’re continuing to improve. But we have a lot of improvement to do and a lot of opportunity to get better. So, I’m excited about that opportunity. ... We’ll get to the work on that this week and get ready for a very, very good Washington Commanders team that is playing at a very high level, maybe the highest level in the league right now.”

DERRICK HENRY: THE NFL’S BEST CLOSER

If running the ball in the fourth quarter is your preferred method of shutting the door on a game, then it would be fair to liken a running back in football to a closer in baseball. By that calculous, Derrick Henry has long been football’s Mariano Rivera or Trevor Hoffman, and his toting of the rock in the four-minute offense is the MLB version of three outs away in the bottom of the ninth.

Like Rivera’s cutter on batters, defenders know what’s coming when Henry is lined up in the backfield with a fourth-quarter lead – a punishing combination of speed, movement and power made even more demoralizing by its predictability, repeatability and inability to be stopped.

“When you can have a four-minute offense with a 250-pound back that can just always fall forward, that’s golden,” explained running backs coach Willie Taggart. “And to be able to do it that way, when they know it’s coming but can’t do anything about it, it brings so much joy to the offense. There’s nothing better than the ‘Big Man’ putting a stamp on it.”

“Big” might be putting it lightly. At 6-3, 247 pounds, Henry certainly looks the part of a professional football player. But running back? No way. After reaching 10,000 career rushing yards in Cincinnati last week, he joined an exclusive club of 31 other all-time greats, 30 of whom – all but Jerome Bettis (252) – he outweighs. Even more unfathomable is that Henry’s 247 pounds are five more than the leagueaverage 242-pound linebacker this season.

But make no mistake, what Henry possesses in size, he does not lack in speed. The 21.29 MPH Henry hit on his 87-yard touchdown run in Week 4 – one of the top speeds by any NFL ball carrier

this season – was no anomaly. It wasn’t an adrenaline-fueled, out-of-body experience triggered by 70,000 screaming fans wearing all black for a highly anticipated Sunday night clash, though that never hurts. Including his 51-yard run that finished off the Bengals last week, where he hit 21.46 MPH, Henry has reached 20 MPH on 28 separate occasions since 2018, a figure topped only by a man so fast, he goes by “Cheetah” (Tyreek Hill – 73).

Albeit a physical specimen oozing with God-given traits, Henry’s practice and training habits are even more superior. He attacks every drill on the field and session in the weightroom with a purpose and precision profound enough to turn heads during a mid-April strength & conditioning program.

“I go back to the word intent. He attacks everything with such a high level of intent – intent with tenacity,” gleaned strength & conditioning coordinator Scott Elliott three days into guiding Henry in the Ravens’ state-of-the-art weightroom. “That’s why he’s Derrick Henry. It’s not about age, not years of service – none of that. He keeps getting better and better, and it’s his work ethic.”

Unlike most people – even athletes – machinery and cars alike, where a direct relationship between usage and breaking down is very much the norm, Henry boasts an inverse relationship between the two, growing better and stronger over time. This unmatched display of greatness extends far beyond the fourth

quarter, reaching macro levels of lateseason and even late-career prowess.

While his 75.7 rushing yards per game from September through November is nothing to scoff at, Henry’s 97.5 rushing yards per game – a whopping 21.8 more yards per game – in December contests and throughout the playoffs is historic, standing as the best such mark in NFL history (min. 30 games played).

For all that Henry has showcased in his short time donning the purple and black – a regal combination fit for “King Henry” – just wait until the temperature dips, and the pressure mounts. That will be football’s equivalent to October baseball, when the league’s top closers truly show their best stuff, and when their best stuff helps lift teams to extraordinary heights.

“We want him to FINISH, and we want him to be the CLOSER.”
– Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken

DT TRAVIS JONES

Third-year defensive tackle Travis Jones has become a game wrecker in his first year as a full-time starter with the Ravens. The 2022 third-round pick has been lauded by coaches and teammates for his impact up front and has developed in to a key cog on Baltimore’s defense. Learn more about him below:

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE NBA/MLB/NHL/MLS/FORMULA 1 TEAM?

 I’m a Boston Celtics fan. My favorite player on the team is Jayson Tatum.

WHAT JOB WOULD YOU HAVE IF YOU WEREN’T PLAYING PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL?

 I would probably be a coach, maybe a strength & conditioning coach. I would want to coach at the highest level possible.

IF YOU COULD SWITCH LIVES WITH ANY ONE TEAMMATE FOR ONE DAY, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

 It would have to be Lamar Jackson. I would probably go buy myself something nice. (laughter)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE THAT YOU’VE VISITED?

 I just got my passport, so the only place I’ve been outside the mainland United States is Puerto Rico, and that was pretty cool. I’ve also been to Mexico.

WHO/WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST MOTIVATION?

 My family. My mom pushed me to be a great player and a great person.

WHAT IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST (NON-FOOTBALL RELATED)?

Baltimore Ravens Girls Flag Programs

In 2023, 280 student-athletes from Frederick County Public Schools participated in the inaugural season of Maryland Girls Flag Football. This year, the Ravens expanded their funding and support across Maryland to now include Baltimore City, Montgomery County and Washington County.

On Wednesday, Sept. 4, the second season of girls’ flag football in Maryland began with a Kickoff Classic – a 26game slate across eight different statewide locations. A ceremony was held at each location with special guests, including Ravens Cheerleaders, Poe and Ravens Legends, like Trevor Pryce, Ray Rice and Torrey Smith.

Before the game, all student-athletes were surprised with a special shout out

video from Ravens HC John Harbaugh and WR Zay Flowers

In 2024, all 53 participating schools will play competitively in a fall calendar that mirrors other seasonal athletics facilitated by their respective districts. The season will conclude with a championship event held at M&T Bank Stadium on Nov. 8.

With 53 participating high schools, the girls’ flag initiative is rapidly advancing towards the ultimate goal of becoming a state-sanctioned sport and allowing female student-athletes in every Maryland county to receive these same opportunities well into the future.

The Williamsport Wildcats (Washington County) were among the 53 teams across Maryland to participate in opening day for the 2024 Girls Flag Football season.
