GAME PREVIEW SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2017, 1:00 PM

VS.

FAST FACTS • The Baltimore Ravens (2-1) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1) square off at M&T Bank Stadium today (Oct. 1), with kickoff set for 1 p.m. ET. The team that wins the game will take over sole possession of first place in the AFC North. • Pittsburgh owns the regular season series lead, 22-20. However, Baltimore has won five of the past seven games (and six of the past eight when including playoffs). In 2016, the teams split the season series, with the Ravens winning 21-14 in Charm City. The Ravens then sustained a heartbreaking, 31-27 loss at Pittsburgh in Game 15 (Christmas Day), which eliminated Baltimore from the playoffs. • The Ravens fell, 44-7, to the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday at London’s historic Wembley Stadium. Jacksonville’s defense posted 2 sacks and 2 INTs, while the Jaguars’ offense racked up 410 yards and saw TE Marcedes Lewis score 3 receiving TDs. The Ravens, who began the season 2-0 and allowed just 10 total points in

those contests, did not force a turnover against Jacksonville after producing 5 take-aways in each of their first two games. • In their 22nd year of existence, the Ravens have earned a playoff berth in six of the past nine full seasons. Since coach Harbaugh’s arrival in 2008, Baltimore has posted the NFL’s fourth-most total victories (97), won the league’s second-most playoff games (10), advanced to an impressive three AFC Championship contests, and in 2012, captured the World Championship in SB XLVII.

QUOTH THE RAVEN “You’ve got to keep guys’ heads up. So much of this game is confidence and going out there and getting it done. If you let one of these kinds of games creep into your mind and debilitate you, then you’ll be in trouble. So, we’ve just got to make sure we keep our heads up and keep going.” – QB Joe Flacco on how the team approaches today’s game after last week’s loss to the Jaguars

NUMBERS TO RAVE ABOUT

79.5 19.5 Opponents’ QB passer rating since 2008, John Harbaugh’s first season in Baltimore. (This ranks as the NFL’s top defensive mark.)

Career sacks (including postseason) that OLB Terrell Suggs has tallied against the Steelers, ranking most among any NFL defender in Pittsburgh’s franchise history.

+14

The Ravens’ turnover differential against Pittsburgh (17 take-aways vs. 3 give-aways) in the last six games played at M&T Bank Stadium (5-1 record for Baltimore).

STAT OF THE WEEK

The Ravens currently own (tied, Oak.) the NFL’s second-longest home winning streak, capturing victories in six-straight contests. The winning streak began last season with a 21-14 victory over Pittsburgh on Nov. 16. NFL WINNING STREAKS AT HOME (Current Streaks) Rk. Team Consec. Wins 1. Dallas Cowboys 8 2. RAVENS VS. STEELERS SERIES • The Steelers lead the regular season series, 22-20, with the Ravens winning six of the last eight, including a 2014 Wild Card playoff game. • In Baltimore, the Ravens are 12-9, winning four straight. • Remarkably, 12 of the last 18 Ravens-Steelers games (since 2008) have been decided by 3 or fewer points. • Under John Harbaugh, the Ravens are 10-8 vs. Pittsburgh in regular season play.

MATCHUP WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The first of two games in the NFL’s best rivalry, the Ravens host the Steelers today in what is bound to be a hard-fought battle between these AFC North clubs. Once again, Baltimore (2-1) and Pittsburgh (2-1) are fighting for first place in the division. Since 2008, John Harbaugh’s first season as head coach, 12 of the 18 games between these teams have been decided by 3 or fewer points.

ON LEARNING FROM DEFEATS “A coach named Mike Gottfried, who was a good friend and mentor, said, ‘You win or learn.’ I like to learn from the wins, too, but you are probably going to learn a lot more from the losses. We looked at last week’s game and have learned from it. We worked on correcting the things we needed to correct, but you always have to do it with a forward mindset. We have to apply the correction, the improvement to the next game. All eyes are on the game ahead of us – the Pittsburgh Steelers today.”

IT’S STEELERS WEEK!

TERRELL SUGGS REFLECTS ON THE NFL’S BEST RIVALRY By David Wolf

20

BALTIMORE RAVENS GAMEDAY

BALTIMORERAVENS.COM 21

Terrell Suggs has made countless highlight plays in the vaunted SteelersRavens rivalry. Fans remember Suggs’ legendary interception when he trapped the ball between his legs to help secure a victory at Pittsburgh in the 2014 Wild Card playoffs. There was also the game where he earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors after sacking Ben Roethlisberger three times in the 2011 season opener.

“You have to play in one of these games to understand what it really means,” Suggs insists. “Everyone can talk about it – ‘This is a heated rivalry.’ But if you actually watch, when we play each other, it is the most physical game in the NFL year after year. I saw how guys acted when I was younger – Ray Lewis, Ed Reed. I saw how they changed during ‘Steelers Week.’ When you went out there on the field, you realized how personal it was.”

IT’S ALWAYS GOING TO BE A HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHT. – Terrell Suggs In fact, Sizzle registered his first sack against Pittsburgh during the first game of his career in 2003. The list goes on. Suggs can recall specific moments from virtually every Ravens’ contest against the Steelers. However, typically, the memories that stand out aren’t about himself. In fact, he can’t even point to a specific play he has made that stands as his favorite in these showdowns. What he can pinpoint are specific games and everything about them – the situation, each team’s personnel and how the two teams both finished on the year. 22

BALTIMORE RAVENS GAMEDAY

Along with several others who have been involved in these clashes, Suggs is adamant that it’s the best rivalry in football – if not in all of sports. Part of that has to do with the fact that the two teams have been consistently involved in so many high-profile, competitive, meaningful games. Another reason behind the spirited competition between the two AFC North foes are the similarities the teams share – in terms of each franchise’s character and proven success. Both organizations pride themselves on toughness, consistency and hardnosed football. And both organizations have a rich history of winning. (The Ravens and

A MUTUAL RESPECT IS THERE, BECAUSE WE ARE THE ONLY TEAMS THAT PLAY THE WAY WE DO. – Terrell Suggs on the Ravens-Steelers rivalry

24

BALTIMORE RAVENS GAMEDAY

Steelers are two of just four teams to have won multiple Super Bowls since 2000.) “There is definitely a heightened level of a respect,” Suggs acknowledges. “You never cross paths without a few things in common. A mutual respect is there, because we are the only teams that play the way we do.” While Suggs’ favorite moments of these competitive games often come at expense of the Steelers – he mentions Jarret Johnson “decleating” Hines Ward as one of them – the Ravens have been on the wrong side of these plays, as well.

The 2011 NFL Defensive Player of the Year recalls a particular hit that sent his 265-pound body flying to the ground. “I came through underneath, and Willie Colon just slammed me,” Suggs explained. “I told Haloti [Ngata] about it, and he kind of made it a long night for Willie. Haloti – that was my enforcer. He was the entire team’s enforcer.” The players in this rivalry are forever changing. It’s no longer Ngata to enforce at nose guard; now it’s Brandon Williams. The middle is manned by C.J. Mosley – who is aiming to tackle Le’Veon Bell – and not Ray Lewis trying to stop Jerome Bettis. Yet after 15 seasons, Suggs can still sense how intense the rivalry is. It’s still a different feel inside the Ravens training facility when it’s “Steelers Week.”

“The mentality and the mood is still the same. Yes, we don’t have ‘92’ [Haloti Ngata], ‘52’ [Ray Lewis] or ‘20’ [Ed Reed],” Suggs said. “They don’t have their guys – ‘86’ [Hines Ward], ‘43’ [Troy Polamalu] or their ‘25’ [Ryan Clark]. But the mentality and the team is still the same. All both teams did was get younger. The aggressiveness and the will to win is still the same.” The intense desire to compete will be on full display today. Both teams enter M&T Bank stadium with winning records, and ‘Sizzle’ will be looking to add more highlights to his lengthy resume. “‘Steelers Week’ starts the moment after whatever the previous game is,” Suggs said. “You anticipate this week, and you love it. It’s always going to be a heavyweight fight.” BALTIMORERAVENS.COM 25

BALTIMORE RAVENS GAMEDAY

“We had probably – I’m going to tell you what – it had to be 20,000 Ravens fans there. The place was Ravens fans. And our fans were actually from Baltimore who were there cheering for us. They made the trip over, and they were loud, and they were into it. I am just more disappointed than anything that we did not give them what they deserved – a good performance.” – Head Coach John Harbaugh

Ravens and PLAY 60 Today’s special NFL PLAY 60 game continues the league’s long-standing tradition of encouraging children to be active during the school year and into the winter and holiday season. NFL PLAY 60 is a league-wide effort to fight childhood obesity by getting kids active for at least 60 minutes a day. At today’s game, the Ravens will recognize 12 students who will be participating in the 2017 NFL PLAY 60 Challenge and Fuel up to PLAY 60 Challenge as youth fitness ambassadors. The students will be asked to be leaders in their school to help promote the fourweek challenge that will be executed throughout the month of October. Students will document their daily minutes of activity for the opportunity to win Ravens-themed incentive prizes throughout the course of the program.

Along with being honored during a pre-game ceremony, the ambassadors are fully outfitted in Ravens PLAY 60 apparel, provided by the NFL. The Ravens continue their PLAY 60 community outreach throughout the entire year by hosting numerous PLAY 60 events, including the inaugural PLAY 60 All Ability Football Clinic, an event for Special Olympics Maryland athletes to get active alongside NFL stars, as well as the annual Hometown Huddle Ravens TEAM Challenge, PLAY 60 school visits and the Spring Rewards Luncheon, held annually at one of the team’s facilities.

“I try to promote healthy lifestyles and good choices, which is what the PLAY 60 message supports. My passion is for kids in the community and seeing youth excel is what motivates me to get out in the community on my off day.”
