GAME PREVIEW SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2017, 1:00 PM
VS.
FAST FACTS • In their 2017 home opener today, the Baltimore Ravens (1-0) battle the Cleveland Browns (0-1). • Against Cleveland, the Ravens lead the all-time series, 27-9. (In Charm City, the Ravens are 14-4.) Under head coach John Harbaugh, Baltimore is 16-2 vs. the Browns, including sweeping the 2016 series. • The Ravens emerged with a 20-0 victory in their Week 1 opener at Cincinnati last Sunday, producing the 11th shutout in franchise history (and first since 2009). Forcing 5 total turnovers, the Ravens’ defense was suffocating, posting 5 sacks and 4 INTs for the first time in team history. (OLB Terrell Suggs tallied 2 QB drops.) Aided by a strong ground game (42 rushes for 157 yards), QB Joe Flacco made his 2017 debut after missing the entire preseason. Flacco needed only to complete 9 of 17 passes, including a 48-yard TD to newly-acquired WR Jeremy Maclin. • In 2016, the Ravens finished second in the AFC North with an 8-8 record (4-2 in division play) behind the 11-5 Pittsburgh Steelers, who advanced to the AFC title game. A heartbreaking, 31-27 loss at Pittsburgh in Game 15 eliminated Baltimore from the playoffs.

Since coach Harbaugh’s arrival in 2008, Baltimore has posted the NFL’s fourth-most total victories (96), won the league’s second-most playoff games (10), advanced to an impressive three AFC Championship contests, and in 2012, captured the World Championship in SB XLVII.

QUOTH THE RAVEN
“This is, by far, the closest team that I’ve been a part of. That’s not just including the defense, but as an offense. This team is just on another level, both mentally [and] being together, competing, pushing each other, playing off each other. ... We’re pushing each other and not wasting a day or a rep. I think our whole team has tried to live that way and practice that way, and I believe it’s going to show this year.” – S Eric Weddle on the 2017 Ravens

MATCHUP WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Ravens, coming off the 20-0 shutout victory at Cincinnati last Sunday, host the Cleveland Browns in today’s home opener. Baltimore’s defense, which jumped out of the gate with a standout effort last week by forcing five Bengals’ turnovers and five sacks, looks to build on the outstanding performance. It will be challenged by Browns rookie QB DeShone Kizer, who started his first NFL game and connected with eight different receivers in Week 1, plus veteran RBs Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson.

ON AFC NORTH RIVALRIES “All three of these teams we play in our division are big rivalry games for different reasons. But, they are all very intense. The crowds are always hyped up when you go play. Our crowd is always hyped up when they come in. That is true for the Steelers, the Browns and the Bengals – all three teams. We know each other. We know the schemes. We know the players. There is a lot of heat in all these games, and they are very important games, because they are division games. You are trying to win your division. We put them all in the same scale. They are all big.”

Ravens CB Brandon Carr, who signed with the Ravens in the offseason after nine seasons in Kansas City (four) and Dallas (five), had a first-quarter interception of Bengals QB Andy Dalton, one of four picks the Baltimore defense secured in the 20-0 shutout victory in Cincinnati last Sunday. The shutout was the Ravens’ first since the 2009 season when they shut out the Cleveland Browns, 16-0 (11/16/09).

BALTIM BALTIMORE’S QUARTER QUARTERBACK BUILDING BUI BACK UP BA TEN YEARS IN, FLACCO PRIMED TO LEAD RAVENS’ RETURN TO PLAYOFFS By Patrick Gleason
BALTIMORERAVENS.COM 21
Ten NFL seasons? Upon first glance, it’s hard not to do a double take when seeing how long Joe Flacco has been the Ravens’ starting gunslinger. Whoa, 10! Since he was tabbed with the 18th-overall pick in 2008, Flacco has built one of the best pro careers in Baltimore football history. Johnny Unitas and No. 5 are the only quarterbacks to win a championship and play for at least 10 years in Charm City, thus, firmly planting themselves in the undisputed top tier of local legends. And like Unitas, Flacco is historically good. (Double take?) Yes, historically. A quarterback’s chief purpose is to lead his team to victory. Well, for Flacco, his 94 total wins (including playoffs) rank third among active starting quarterbacks since he entered the NFL. Additionally, his 84 regular season victories during this span are the fifth most by a signal-caller through this point of a QB’s first 10 seasons. Similarly, Flacco’s postseason success can’t be ignored, with his 10 playoff victories dating back to 2008 standing second only to Tom Brady (11). Of Flacco’s 10, seven of those wins have occurred on the road, marking the most by a quarterback in NFL history. The Ravens’ all-time leading passer in every major category – yards, touchdowns, completions and attempts – Flacco most recently threw for a single-season Baltimore football-record 4,317 yards in 2016. Additionally, his proven clutch factor has appeared time and time again, evidenced by his 26-career game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime. 22
BALTIMORE RAVENS GAMEDAY
Let perhaps the most impressive nugget not be forgotten: Leading Baltimore to the Super Bowl XLVII title in 2012, Flacco became the second quarterback in NFL postseason history (Joe Montana - 1989) to throw 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions. (This feat cannot be overstated, and its allure will never fade.) The fact of the matter is, “Joe Cool” plays his best football on the grandest stages and when the pressure is most intense. With the exception of Brady, one would be hard pressed to find a quarterback who has performed at a consistently higher level in the past decade of postseason play. Just take a minute to let these figures sink in: • In the Ravens’ last 10 playoff games (since the 2010 season), Flacco is 196of-327 for 2,563 yards, 24 touchdowns and four interceptions (104.1 rating). (The Ravens are 7-3 in these postseason contests.) • In Baltimore’s last six playoff games (5-1 record), Flacco has thrown 17 touchdowns and a paltry two picks. Completing 119 of 200 passes for 1,691 yards, he owns a stellar 111.1 QB rating. • Flacco has thrown at least two touchdown passes in eight-straight playoff games, marking the longest streak in NFL postseason history. • Flacco’s streak of 197 passes without throwing an interception in the postseason (from 1/22/12 to 1/10/15) is the second longest in NFL playoff history (Drew Brees, 226). Sure, this is a lot of talk about playoffs – a place Flacco and the Ravens are determined to return in 2017 after missing out the past two seasons.

After all, the questions are fair, with pundits continuously asking: Can they get back? Is there a sense of urgency? Will Flacco guide them again? “It is tough to label one year or another as more important, just because you are not coming off a great year or because you are coming off a Super Bowl – whatever it may be,” the quarterback states. “Every single year in this league is super important. “But I will say this,” he affirms. “We have a very high standard here, and we know we belong in the playoffs year-in and year-out. I have a lot of confidence in this team and our ability to win football games.” Just as the Ravens have confidence in Flacco’s proven – and historic – ability to lead Baltimore back to where it belongs.
WE HAVE A VERY HIGH STANDARD HERE, AND WE KNOW WE BELONG IN THE PLAYOFFS YEAR-IN AND YEAR-OUT. I HAVE A LOT OF CONFIDENCE IN THIS TEAM AND OUR ABILITY TO WIN FOOTBALL GAMES. – Joe Flacco BALTIMORERAVENS.COM 25

“We recognize the importance of strengthening our community, and are committed to contributing in as many ways as we can. Our players do an amazing job connecting with Baltimore and supporting its causes. Our fans and community mean the world to us and without them, we could not do our job. It is an honor to give back to such a great city.” – Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh
2017 Signature Project The Baltimore Ravens hosted an organization-wide volunteer day to renew and transform Mary Ann Winterling Elementary School in Southwest Baltimore. Fully funded by the Ravens Foundation, Inc., the $175,000 project featured a renovation day and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, May 19. The Ravens were also joined by representatives from The Heart of America Foundation and Baltimore City Public Schools. Both current and former Ravens players and staff comprised the more than 100 volunteers who flocked together for the restoration event. The team refurbished the school’s cafeteria and gymnasium, painted the hallways and enhanced outdoor landscaping to celebrate the students and community surrounding the school.
Volunteers also assisted with field day activities and distributed backpacks filled with books to the students. Additionally, the Ravens Bookmobile was on site and accessible throughout the day. The afternoon concluded with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony and project reveal, where representatives from each of the organizations involved and select community leaders spoke about the day. The restoration project recognized the school’s community and dedicated staff, some of whom have aided their students for more than a decade. These improvements will dramatically enhance the school’s learning environment, helping to engage the students and community in new and exciting ways.
“Our kids really look up to their sports figures, and having them in their community in Southwest Baltimore has been great for them.” – Nikia Carter Principal, Mary Ann Winterling Elementary
