Surface-Tensio Surface-tensiometers are suitable for use as tensiostats for controlling irrigation when used together with a switching sensor. This option comes into consideration for capillary matting with drip irrigation, controlled flow or thin layer cultivation with drip irrigation. In combination with a sensor or manometer, surface-tensiometers, can be used solely for moisture measurement on irrigation or technical fleece, on a substrate surface or in a substrate. Surfaces-tensiometers of this design are suited only briefly for suction pressure above ca. 300 hPa; otherwise frequent refilling is necessary.

Small insertion-tensiometers can be distinguished by the two different sized clay tips: either Model KVO.. with a 10 mm Ø tip for the smallest containers (for pots of ca. 5 cm or more) or the Model KV.. series with a 15 mm Ø for standard pots (KV2) up to midsize containers or shallow rooted bed plantings (KV3). The maximum suction pressure by the smaller models is limited to 200 hPa due to its design and corresponding smaller water volume. In certain cases, it is advisable to use a capillary tube extension. Small insertion-tensiometers are often used as tensiostats with switching sensors for watering purposes. However, it is often combined with electronic sensors for control purposes or even just for recording moisture trends. Using a T-piece joint, it is possible to add manometers, for example, in order to control switching points.

A unique feature of the newly designed series of premium tensiometers Model LM … is the large volume, robust tube and the sturdy, cylindrical clay tip. In addition to mechanical stability, the series has the advantage of having a longer use time (less maintenance) due to its larger capacity. Premium Insertion Tensiometers are suitable, in combination with a manometer or electronic sensor, for soil measurement in all desired depths of more than ca. 15 cm insertion depth. Tensiometer tubes generally project above the ground 8-10 cm. It is advisable to plan the total length correspondingly in order to avoid any unnecessary temperature influences caused by overly long, projecting tubes. With its various connection possibilities, the Model LM is suitable for use with switching sensors for controlling watering, as well as for on-site control when combined with a digital manometer.

The insertion-tensiometer „Blumat“ Model BL is designed to be a reasonably priced, light weight sensor, planned for use together with a digital manometer. The design is based on a slim 18 mm tube and uses a conical clay tip from the Blumat series of the corresponding size (not extra type tested). In contrast to the original “Blumat Digital” Model BD 1, the Insertion-Tensio Blumat is designed for professional use with a transparent tube and can be used in greater depths. The insertion-tensiometer Blumat, together with a digital manometer, presents a dependable moisture measuring device for all measuring needs in standard depths for not overly dry locations. In order to avoid temperature influences while measuring, it is advisable to plan the total length of the tensiometer to fit the measuring depth and thereby avoid overly long tubes projecting above the ground.

Steck-Tensio Ceramic The special feature of the insertion-tensiometer “Ceramic”, of the Model LK-series, is the unique ceramic tip K100 (comparable to the tip type P80). The basis for this end piece is mulliteceramic, a high quality silicate, which surrounds an inert, lowsorption chamber. Suitable for all soil measurements with tensiometers, used especially for scientific purposes and there where similar types of tensiometers are in place, for example, the P80 tip. Due to the unique properties of the end piece, the bottom part can be used as a suction-tensiometer, suitable for suctioning moisture from soil when combined with the set “Suction-Tensio” with capillary tubing and collection vessel (available upon request), especially recommended when heavy metals are a factor.

Manometer

www.tensio.de

Manometer Analogue, mechanical manometer The classic tensiometer is made up of two parts: below a tensiometer and above a manometer. The manometer is a pressure gauge which shows the suction tension on the tensiometer directly, without any preparation. The instruments are maintenance free and long lasting, when handled carefully. The measuring element is a capsule pressure gauge, which has an overload capacity of up to -1 bar (1000 hPa). The accuracy is generally 2.5% of the measuring range. The manometers are individually calibrated and the deviation is noted on the test certificate. Settings are adjustable. These special manometers can be used for all tensiometer measuring needs. Together with switching sensors (+ T-connectors), they can be used for control measuring or for evaluating the settings of the switching points. However, please note that for direct switching tensiostats, the reaction time for the manometer to turn off is somewhat slower.

1705

1707

Digital Manometer The digital manometer is made up of a piezoresistive pressure gauge (comparable to electronic-sensors) and a battery powered display. The instrument is activated with an on/off button. Otherwise, the use corresponds to that of the mechanical manometer. It is also possible to use the digital manometer in conjunction with switching sensors (M-sensor or TSW) via a Tconnector. The manometer is maintenance free, and should be operated in the range from -5° to +40°C. The replaceable lithium battery (CR 2032) has a life of 30,000 cycles. Connection for Model M: screw on cap with GL 14 female threading Connection for Model BD: Blumat threading (21 mm), both with plastic casing

M-Sensores (Switching Sensors)

www.tensio.de

M-Sensores (Switching Sensors) “M-sensors” are sub-pressure electro-mechanical (vacuum) switches. With an M-sensor, it is possible to upgrade a tensiometer bottom to a “tensiostat” with switching capabilities. These sub-pressure sensors are membrane switches typically used for low voltage (such as 24 V) for defined switching ranges, and have no specific protection against moisture. The switching points are continuously adjustable, however, without a scale; a typical switching point is marked. For automatic watering, M-sensors are generally connected to an automatic watering system. (The sensor switches on, the system switches off.) Direct switching is also possible via a 24 V transformer; in this case, the tensiostat switches on and off. The length of watering required should be seen independently of the suction tension. When used outdoors, M-sensors must be carefully protected from moisture (see our new protective housing), otherwise, the lifespan of the sensor will be shortened. Mechanical, potential free membrane switch (passive) for NO switching (shut-off) or NC (opener) infinitely variable adjustment, without scale, calibrated, typical (average) value marked, switching differential ca. 15-20% of the end value; connections: electrical flat-pin plug socket of 6.3 mm for tensiometer screw cap GL 14; delivered with protective cap (IP 44= protection only against splashing water).

TensioSwitch (Switching Sensors) TensioSwitch (TSW) and TensioTrans (TT) - see below- are electronic sensors for tensiometers using a new technology of the same design, however, with different sensor outputs. With the switching output function of the TSW, the tensiometer becomes a complete and independent “tensiostat” and, therefore, is an alternative to the M-Sensor. The advantage of the TSW lies in the hands-free switching feature. When negative pressure is increasing, the electrical switching function is referred to as a “switchable connection to ground” (npn). A red LED lights up when the switch is in the “on” position. The switching point is adjustable between about -25 to -400 hPa by means of a continuously variable adjusting screw; the switching differential remains a constant 7-10 hPa. TensioTrans has an analogue output sends a signal of 0-10 V. The tensiometer is outfitted to receive constant electronic readings; these signals must be further processed by a digital device.

8

The measuring range is for 1000 hPa with an accuracy level of 1 %. TT is an alternative to “E-Sensors”. The new technology behind both sensors is the so-called “Hall Effect”. The suction tension of the tensiometer (negative pressure) is detected by a low-pressure capsule gauge and relayed over a magnet to the switching electronics. Both kinds of sensors require an electrical supply of 10-30 V DC (direct current from mains) to power the electronics. A standard circular plug for sensors serves as the electrical connection. The black lacquered brass housing is especially durable and is protected against splashing water. The protective cap pro-

TensioSwitch (Switching Sensors)) vides a further safeguard. For watering purposes, the TSW can either directly switch a 12 or 24 V DC solenoid valve (Tensiostat switches on and off) or it can control a pump over its own relay. A direct connection to certain automatic watering systems is possible (Tensiostat switches on, watering system off). Otherwise, the connection can be made via a small relay (Model KR 12) in the junction box. The TT is usually connected to a data-logger, for example, the Tensio-Logger, or to a climate computer with a watering module as well as to the TensioController. It is used for recording the moisture gradient or for controlling and monitoring the watering operations.

E-Sensors (Analogue Sensor)

www.tensio.de

E-sensors are electronic pressure gauges, which act as “analogue sensors” to continuously measure the suction pressure of the tensiometer. The measurement signals are further processed in the digital unit for either display or switching purposes. The device consists of a piezo-resistent pressure sensor for differential measurement of pressure with an additional measurement converter for each type of signal; the unit can be ordered optionally without the converter function; the accuracy of measurement is, in general, 0.5 %. The plastic housing is ventilated and has a white protective covering. The electronics are additionally protected by an insolating moulding, the unit can be factory calibrated and repaired. The sensors are resistant to disturbance according to CE norms and have an inverse-polarity protection. A permanent cable socket is provided for electrical connection. In order to have continuous moisture measurement and to observe the course of moisture levels over time, a connection must be made to a PC, climate computer or data logger with an input corresponding to the signal (also see TensioLogger and TensioController). In this case, the power supply usually comes from an external mains connection.

TensioMark (Analogue Sensor) TensioMark is a new electronic, maintenance-free soil moisture sensor that directly determines the suction tension of the soil (matrix potential) in defined intervals and transmits either analogue or digital measurement signals. The sensor is similar to a tensiometer, however, requires no water column, making it suitable for year-long measuring. The measuring principle is based on the direct correlation of the thermal capacity of a substrate to a specific moisture level. By means of short pulses of heat within an equilibrium body, the thermal capacity of a constant, defined reference substrate can be determined and, using these known values, correlated to the suction tension of the soil. This value represents the availability of water in the soil. The equilibrium body, in this case, a highly porous, tensi-

10

ometer-like chamber, stands in a constant, fast reacting exchange with the surrounding soil. Due to the indirect measurement in an equilibrium chamber, the soil type and density, as well as salinity have no affect on the results. Temperature also has no influence, because it is offset in the measuring process. TensioMark is produced as an insertion sensor in tube form; the relevant electronics are located in the head of the tube. The length of the tube corresponds to the insertion depth desired. The electrical connection uses a 4-pole socket.

The standard model with an analogue signal of 0-10 V is connected to a data-logger, for example, TensioLogger, or a climate computer, for continuous moisture measurement. With a constant power supply, measurements are made every 15 minutes. TensioMark works together with the TensioLogger INL, as well as the digital signal for SDI 12 protocol; at the same time, the sensor delivers soil temperature values. Analogue signals are required for use with the switching units “SensorMatic 10” or “TensioController” for controlling watering. The special advantage of the TensioMark is its maintenance free, easy operation for long term use with dependable suction tension measurement. The results are comparable to those of a tensiometer, without requiring a water column for measuring purposes! The set-up follows the same rules as for tensiometers.

Capacitive Sensors These sensors measure the absolute water content in a given soil volume. This is a “volumetric” measurement and is not comparable to the “water availability” based measurement of tensiometers. The measured results are expressed in % water volume (m³) per m³ soil; prerequisite is that the values can be digitally displayed over a measuring unit or PC and that a calibration curve for the specific soil type is available. The results are dependent on the soil type and can not be compared with results from other locations. Also, the salinity of the soil should not be too high (< 8 dS/m), however, the sensors will give an indication of differing sensitivity to salt. “Capacitance”

measurement is based upon the dielectrical characteristic of the soil for which various measuring techniques can be applied. The following examples function as FDR-sensors, in which high frequency electromagnetic waves react to varying soil moisture levels. It is important that the sensors are carefully installed in the soil, since cavities around the measuring electrodes disturb the waves. The advantage of capacitance sensors- as

Capacitive Sensors a rule, they are maintenance free and are suitable as analogue sensors for controlling watering, since, in this case, only the relative change in the moisture level is of importance and not the comparison to other soil types. Additionally, using the method of capacitance measurement plus the corresponding calibration curve allows the soil to be judged directly as to the useable moisture capacity of the field, and, therefore, to the amount of water which needs to be irrigated. TensioLogger INL (Internetlogger) TensioLogger INL is a data recording device (data-logger), which enables the recording of soil moisture data in regular intervals, especially for digital sensors using SDI 12-protocol, for example, the moisture sensor TensioMark, but can also be used with analogue as well as electronic sensors (E-sensors), and for transmitting and monitoring data via internet. Operation/ Power supply: The Logger works in SDI 12 mode with a corresponding bus connection (3-wired cable), requires 8-14 V DC, powered over an integrated battery pack with about 10.5 V and 2.5 Ah (7x 1.5 V Lithium batteries). An external connection for batteries or mains connector is included as an alternative. The Logger offers 24, or optionally 48 channels, for connect-

ing SDI 12-sensors, either directly or over biased terminal nodes. When a sensor is used for measuring different factors, then 1 channel will be required for each factor, for example, a TensioMark unit in SDI 12mode used for measuring the soil moisture as well as the soil temperature (further sensors for climate or soil moisture available upon request). Analogue sensors with 0-2.5 V signals, power supply of 5 V, are connected over a special interface (with an analogue-digital-transformer), for example, for use with tensiometers of the E-sensor series CVR.

TensioLogger INL - Internetlogger For other analogue sensors, it may be necessary to customize the signal of the external power source to fit the individual situation. In addition, there are a maximum of 4 counter inputs for counting events, such as the pulses from a precipitation gauge. Storage/ Transmission: 2 MB of permanent data memory is available, sufficient for up to about 250 000 values; data are saved in “csv” format. 1636 In the “standard” version Model INL 1630 02, data are read-out over a wireless USB-interface (Dangle), for example, 1621 USB-Dongle with a laptop or netbook (max. distance 30 m).
