Welcome to our latest schools catalogue. As you can see we have changed the format of our regular schools catalogue to this new ‘tabloid’ size. We feel it allows us to show more of the products you order from us, as well as offering a number of tips for the most common models found in the textiles classroom. This year we’ve added some new products and removed some old ones. We still only include the products which we have confidence in. As Main Agents for Bernina, Janome and Brother sewing machines we like to offer impartial advice based on our experience of supplying schools and colleges since the 1950’s. Let’s go back to 1946... Roy Bamber is a young man in Salford and he spots a sewing machine in a treadle stand sat atop a bombsite. He scrambles up to the top and manages to drag the sewing machine down to the ground. After hiring a handcart he wheels the whole thing back home to Irlams o’th’ Height. Some time later, after repairing and restoring the machine to working condition, he sells it to a neighbour. After completing his national service a few years later Dad got back into sewing machines and began to build his business...

Bernina 1008S sewing machine Traditional style of mechanical Bernina At one time every Bernina had a metal body and a completely mechanical mechanism. You would find models such as the 801 and 830 in the home economics departments of schools and colleges throughout the country. Now, teachers often choose one of the lighter electronic models shown on this page.

Hints & Tips Using the Buttonhole Dial correctly Many school Berninas such as the 801 and 1008S have a mechanical buttonhole mechanism. You should only ever turn the buttonhole dial in a clockwise direction. If you turn the dial in an anticlockwise direction you will damage the buttonhole mechanism and your Bernina will then require a repair.

For best results use the Buttonhole foot, No.3. Reducing your top tension from 5 to 4 may help to make the buttonhole stitching look sharper. and crisper. The use of good quality thread such as Gütermann and good quality needles, Schmetz, will also help.

Two NEW Overlockers from Bernina Bernina L 450 Overlocker The L 450 comes with the MTC system which allows you to fine tune looper stitches to fit the cut edge. This feature will help you save time and produce better looking seams. A four thread overlocker with differential feed control to reduce ‘wavy’ edges on knits and slippage on longer projects. Bernina L 460 Overlocker A new model, like the L 450, the L 460 comes with a knee-lift system. When both hands are required for larger projects, use your knee to raise to raise the presser foot. The MTC system will provide you with precise control over looper threads to fit the cut edge.Another nice touch is the LED lighting - very bright. BERNINA PRESSER FEET Type A fits most of the Berninas used in schools and colleges which are largely mechanical models and they include various models that your school may have bought 20 plus years ago such as the, 707, 801, 807, 830, 900, 910, 930, 1005, 1015, 1020 or the 1030. It also includes the later models 1008 & 1008S.

Hints & Tips There are two ‘types’ of Bernina presser feet - Type A and Type B

Type B fits most of the electronic models including the 120, 130, 140, 145 and the later models 215, 230, 240, 330 and 350. Please get in touch if you are uncertain which ‘type’ you need for your particular Berninas. We’ll be very happy to help and advise you.

Using good quality needles and threads DOES make a difference to the quality of your work. 3. Always raise the presser foot when threading your machine, this releases the tension unit and ensures your thread sits properly in the tension.

In recent years one or two schools have ordered the J3 models from us. They are a lightweight machine and won’t last for more than a few years in most classrooms. That said, they are the least expensive option we are prepared to offer to those schools with next to no budget.

An upgraded version of the Janome J3-18. The J3-20 has slightly more stitch options including some decorative stitches. Again, this is a bargain basement option and is really only aimed at schools with next to no budget. It’s not going to last long in a heavy duty textiles classroom. Use it for lightweight use and lightweight fabrics.

The top of the Janome J3 Series. The Janome J3-24 provides more stitches but isn’t overloaded. Again it is still a basic machine with limited capabilities as far as schools use is concerned. Expect all three of these Janome J3 Series models to only provide a short term solution.

Traditional style of mechanical Janome Janome 423S Sewing Machine What happens when you want to buy Berninas for your classroom but the head won’t give you the money? Locking yourself in your bedroom probably won’t work, so you should consider the Janome 423S instead. We’ve supplied this model, and previous versions, to many schools and colleges. The 423S has a similar raceway to the Berninas and it’s tough and durable with a robust metal body. It won’t sew as well as the Berninas but it sews well enough to be acceptable. Hints & Tips Threading the Take-up Lever

The design of the modern sewing machine has changed over the years. In many cases the covers will conceal the take-up lever through its movement up and down until it reaches the very top position - and then it becomes exposed. It’s important not to forget to thread the Take-up lever. If you don’t the thread may jam in the race.

Always thread the Take-up lever and always ensure that you have threaded it properly. Some Take-up levers have an internal clip to hold the thread in place. It’s important that you gently pull the thread beyond the clip so that it is held in place. Especially with ‘drop-in’ models.
