BIOARQUITECTURA MEDITERRANEA INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR AND WORKSHOP, CONVENT DE SANT AGUSTÍ. Carrer Comerç 5 Barcelona 17-18.19 of May 2012 TYPE OF PROPOSAL AND DEVELOPMENT Bi annual International Symposium on Healthy Architecture Construction in the Mediterranean Area.. All Symposiums editions. will be held in Barcelona. In Every edition a different Mediterranean country is invited to participate in the symposium. The first edition is to be held in May 2012 and the guest country is Italy. The selection of participant is done in a 6 months period of time. The selection process is part of the BaM award to be delivered by February 2012. The organization of the event is to be done by the BaM Bio Architecture of the Mediterranean Association in collaboration with LaSalle University. TARGET We address the event to: policy makers, professionals and enterprises of the building sector, investigation and educational organizations as well as publishers and opinion makers. Experts on healthy bio architecture and materials will be the speakers. BAM WHERE: Opening and Press Conference at BioMedical Center Symposium: Convent de Sant Agustí Civic Center, Barcelona BAM: BACKGROUND In the past ten years we have witnessed an impressive increase of interest on "green-sustainable-healthy-eco" building. An increasing number of products, tools and informations are available for the professional. The actual movement of strong innovation on building materials available and sold under the label of "green-

sustainable-healthy-eco" are a call for speed up of capabilities of professionals to deal with this trend. BAM is an event that wants to answer this call and creates a unique space and methodology of reflexion among professionals of the building sector and social innovators. BAM is a spotlight for investigation on opportunities for the Mediterranean building tradition and culture within the healthy and eco building emerging market. BAM starts as an idea in 2010 and takes active part in the organization of the event"Congreso de Bioarquitectura" . This event is the start point of the BAM process. BAM WHY: BAM is a conference-workshop that will produce a significant amount of new insight, practical tools for professionals, educators and public in general. Is a project that stands to give a space for new forms of interaction and production of knowledge and tools for professional work. BAM: HOW The event is organized along three main steps were we will first LEARN what is happening, then ACT to create something new with the knowledge that we gain and then we will IMAGINE how and what we wish for the future. We will learn thanks to the presence and knowledge of great invited experts . Then we will activate the debate by creating a sharing and transversal meeting with other experts of correlated fields. Then we will imagine the future that we wish and want with the contribution of all the participants.

BAM: ABOUT WHAT The main issue that connect all tables of investigation is: How Italy and Spain implement healthy building construction? this main question will be developed in five fields/tables of investigation: 1) Geo-economics 2)Natural Materials (no products) 3) Innovation 4) Education 5) Legislation BAM: WHO Three main types of participants: - Promoted Experts of each field and from Spain and Italy. At least two personalities of recognized authority for each field one from each country that will bring to BAM great insights.... they are the milestone for the learning act - Invited Experts of each field that can give a great contribution at the acting part of the process with his participation in the debate - General public involved or interested in the building sector. MIND FRAME OF THE PROPOSAL: Systemic methodology approach as widely recognized in the scientific community to be of great importance for dealing with ecosystems Cultural and geopolitical perspective as a reference for the enhancement of Mediterranean societies economies and resources.

She is working on sustainable architecture and natural building materials since 2000 and has being a pioneer in taking "out of the box" bioarchitecture and especially straw as a building material . Elisabet Silvestre PhD in Biology, co-founder de BaM. member of GEA (association of geobiological studies) After several years of academic investigation in genetics she decided to give a turn to her professional life and dedicate herself to the investigation and divulgation of health in built environment. She is now a reference for professionals and institutions. She is the co-leader of the BaM conference program. Javier Peña PhD In Material Chemistry. Scientific Director of MATER. He has a strong academic profile as well as great ability for communication and networking. This combination gives Javier a great openness and passion for knowledge and innovation. He brings to the scientific committee the rigor of institutional references as well as awareness of the state of the industry.
Ignasi Cubiñá Biologist and entrepeneur. Worked on pharmaceutic and alimentary industry before founding the consultancy firm on sustainable building EIG. Member of the GlobalEcoForum team. He is a referent in Spain for the Cradle to Cradle International Network. Ignasi brings also to the committee is fast and curios mind as well as the pleasure for good and openwide debates. Maria Casado PhD in Law. Director of UNESCO chair on bioetics. Professor of philosophy of law. Leader of the investigation group of Catalonian Region on "Bioethics, law and society. Maria brings to the committee the rigor and tools for a comprehensive perspective on the most "delicates" and "urgent" issues that are at stake for a healthy sustainable building
Isidro Navarro Architect and professor at LaSalle and UPC University. Director of Master on Sustainable Architecture. He is now preparing is PhD on visualization and network technology as educational and architectural resources. He brings to the committee and the event organization is expertise in innovative learning tools as well as the solid and easy connection between the BaM conference and LaSalle university structure.

Setting our mind to work > Scientific frame of the event: systemic perspective and networking tools
Fritjof Capra, Ph.D., physicist and systems theorist, is a founding
director of the Center for Ecoliteracy in Berkeley, California. The Center advances schooling for sustainability; its most recent book on this growing movement in K-12 schools is Smart by Nature: Schooling for Sustainability (2009). Dr. Capra is on the faculty of the Beahrs Environmental Leadership Program of the University of California, Berkeley. He also teaches at Schumacher College, an international center for ecological studies in England, and frequently gives management seminars for top executives. Dr. Capra is the author of five international bestsellers, The Tao of Physics (1975), The Turning Point (1982), Uncommon Wisdom (1988), The Web of Life (1996), and The Hidden Connections (2002). He coauthored Green Politics (1984), Belonging to the Universe (1991), and EcoManagement (1993), and coedited Steering Business Toward Sustainability (1995). Negli ultimi cinque anni l’attività didattica è stata incentrata sui temi della sostenibilità, con il corso di urbanistica nella laurea specialistica in “Architettura per la sostenibilità” e con la direzione del master Fse in “Progettazione urbana sostenibile”. La didattica affronta il tema dei cambiamenti di ordine progettuale indotti dal principio della sostenibilità e si prefigge di creare un’alta sensibilità verso: le nuove teorie progettuali, ispirate ai principi della salvaguardia del metabolismo delle risorse, del pensare al futuro, dell’operare in modo condiviso; ai modelli di condivisione che implicano tali principi, dalla Local Agenda 21 all’operare in rete; il rispetto e la rivalutazione degli obiettivi delle convenzioni internazionali. architetto e urbanista è consulente Unesco per le zone aride, la civiltà islamica e gli ecosistemi in pericolo. Ha vissuto otto anni nel Sahara lavorando allo studio e il restauro delle oasi in Algeria. Con numerosi saggi e libri pubblicati a partire dalla fine degli anni ‘80 ha dimostrato come le oasi siano frutto dell’ingegno umano, patrimonio di tecniche e conoscenze per combattere l’aridità e modello di gestione sostenibile per il pianeta intero. Coordina progetti con vari Organismi Internazionali in tutto il Mediterraneo, Yemen, Mauritania ed Etiopia. Ha vissuto per dieci anni nei Sassi di Matera abitando nelle grotte da lui restaurate con metodi tradizionali recuperando i sistemi preistorici di raccolta d’acqua piovana e i metodi di climatizzazione e raf frescamento passivo. E’autore dei rappor ti che hanno por tato all’iscrizione dei Sassi di Matera e del Parco del Cilento nella lista del Patrimonio mondiale dell’UNESCO ed ha contribuito con l’esempio diretto e la sua attività al modello di successo realizzato in queste due realtà in rapporto al recupero degli ecosistemi urbani e la salvaguardia del paesaggio. E’ fondatore e coordinatore di IPOGEA Centro studi sulle Conoscenze tradizionali, organizzazione no profit, con sede a Matera e a Firenze che realizza progetti di salvaguardia del paesaggio con pratiche antiche come l’uso dei terrazzamenti di pietra a secco, le cisterne di captazione d’acqua e le gallerie drenanti.
Ha insegnato nelle Facoltà di Architettura delle Università di Firenze, Algeri e Bari e nei master di alta formazione dell’Università di Basilicata e l’Università di Bologna. Ha avuto l’incarico dall’Esposizione Universale di Saragozza del 2008 in Spagna basata sulla tematica dell’acqua della direzione scientifica del padiglione della Sete (SED). In qualità di rappresentante italiano nel Comitato Tecnico-Scientifico della Convenzione delle Nazioni Unite per la Lotta contro la desertificazione (UNCCD), e come Presidente del Panel per le conoscenze tradizionali, ha promosso la realizzazione di una Banca Mondiale sulle Conoscenze tradizionali e il loro uso innovativo (www.tkwb.org). Tale iniziativa viene portata avanti con il supporto del Ministero dell’Ambiente italiano, dell’UNESCO e dell’UNCCD. La Regione Toscana ha messo ha disposizione per la creazione del Centro Internazionale a Firenze la prestigiosa villa di Lorenzo il Magnifico a Careggi che fu sede dell’Accademia Neo Platonica. Architettura tecnica, nato a Cagliari nel ’49, è l’attuale direttore del Dipartimento di Architettura. Insegna Architettura Tecnica e Laboratorio di Progettazione 1 nel Corso di laurea in Architettura, e Caratteri costruttivi e distributivi degli edifici. E’ membro del Collegio dei Docenti del Dottorato di Ricerca in Architettura. E’ componente dei Comitati Scientifici dell’Associazione Italiana Città della Terra, del Consiglio Direttivo Nazionale dell’ANCSA (Associazione Nazionale Centri Storico - Artistici), e del Museo dell’Archeologia Mineraria di CarboniaSerbariu. Il prof. Sanna è stato in passato presidente del Corso di Laurea in Ingegneria Edile. La sua attività scientifica si è sviluppata negli anni più recenti secondo un’impostazione che assegna un valore preminente al rapporto progettocostruzione, con un’attenzione specifica alla relazione con il luogo storico e con il contesto ambientale. In questi mesi ci siamo impegnati per rafforzare la rete delle associazioni ambientaliste presenti nella Val di Bisenzio, assieme alle quali, ci stiamo organizzando per promuovere un nuovo movimento “Le città in transizione”, una filosofia basata sul diretto coinvolgimento delle comunità locali nel pianificare un futuro sostenibile, basato sull’opzione per le energie rinnovabili e il consumo di prodotti locali.
Edilpaglia è l'associazione nazionale che si occupa della diffusione delle tecniche costruttive che utilizzano la balla di paglia quale suo principale materiale ed, assieme ad essa, altri materiali naturali quali argilla e calce. Queste tecniche, pur utilizzando un materiale povero come la paglia, consentono di raggiungere alte performances di efficienza energetica, di comfort ambientale e, contemporaneamente, di mettere in atto soluzioni sostenibili.

MATREC (Material Recycling) is the first free Italian eco-design data base dedicated to materials ensuring a low environmental impact and to their use in the world of production and design. Conceived by Architect Marco Capellini, MATREC was established in 2002 as an online portal, in cooperation with the National Recycling Consortia CiAl, Comieco, and CoRePla. In 2006 MATREC changed from virtual to real, also thanks to the collaboration of the Lombardy Region and of Cestec. In a dedicated area at the Polytechnic Design School of Milan, samples of recycled materials from all over the world are exhibited to the public for free. Since 2008, Assorimap (the National Association of Plastic Material Recyclers and Regenerators) and Cesap (the European Centre for the Development of Plastic Applications) have been involved in the project. In 2010 a new MATREC center was opened in Ascoli Piceno and, in the same year, even the two MATREC temporary centers respectively in Udine and Reggio Calabria. MATREC is a tool, but first and foremost a service aimed at companies, free-lance professionals, designers, Universities, and Research centres for the development of lowimpact products.
Information on the main issues of ecodesign, on sustainable products, and on several materials obtained from recycling is available in the website, divided by categories and supported by descriptions, including composition, technical properties and applications. MATREC is also a research centre at the service of companies for the development of innovative, sustainable, and design products CAPELLINI | design & consulting is one of the first professional offices in Italy to deal with Design & Sustainability. Founded in 1995 by architect Marco Capellini, who operates in the offices of Rome, Milan and Buenos Aires with national and international cooperations: Portugal, Spain, France, UK, USA, Cina, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Brazil. Icaria es una editorial independiente, especializada en el área de ciencias sociales y ensayo, que proporciona herramientas de reflexión a los ciudadanos y ciudadanas, y expone la elaboración de propuestas posibles con voluntad transformadora. El Instituto EcoHabitar es un órgano de la “Asociación para la Formación en Bioconstrucción y Sostenibilidad”, entidad privada e independiente. Su función es proporcionar una formación profunda y profesional a los profesionales de la construcción que quieran optar hacia una actividad más sostenible y ecológica en la edificación. Lnuestra actividad en los distintos aspectos de la Bioconstrucción, y consideramos que es necesaria una actuación real, efectiva, veraz, para conseguir un séctor de la construcción, y sectores afines, realmente respetuoso con el medio ambiente y con la salud del hábitat.

La costituzione giuridica del Gruppo di Ricerca sulle Tecnologie Appropriate Centro di Informazione Nonviolenta (GRTA-CIN) risale al settembre 1986 anche se la formazione del gruppo è molto precedente. Sin dagli anni ’79’80 un piccolo nucleo di persone animate da comuni interessi, fonda la rivista dal Per dire... tra la gente. Successivamente prende il titolo di Tecnologie Appropriate e ora si chiama Gaia – ecologia, nonviolenza, tecnologie appropriate. In questi anni ci siamo dedicati: • Alla catalogazione, alla traduzione, alla produzione, alla stampa e alla diffusione di materiale informativo (libri, riviste, opuscoli, posters, filmati, agenzie stampa, audiovisivi, mostre, ecc...). • A formalizzare collaborazioni con organismi non governativi, associazioni ambientaliste, nonviolente e di solidarietà internazionale che perseguono scopi affini, sia a livello regionale, nazionale ed internazionale. • Alla partecipazione a reti di gruppi che in tutto il mondo si interessano di tecnologie appropriate, di ecologia e nonviolenza, in particolare di educazione alla pace, alla interculturalità, alla mondialità e alla

ICEA - Istituto per la Certificazione Etica ed Ambientale, è tra i più importanti organismi del settore in Italia e in Europa, con oltre 13mila aziende controllate a forte valenza etica, ambientale e sociale, 300 tecnici e 20 Strutture Operative Territoriali in Italia e 10 Uffici all'estero. Giancarlo Allen- ANAB Treviglio (BG) 20 ottobre 1950, laurea nel 1977 presso la Facoltà di Architettura del Politecnico di Milano con tesi ad indirizzo urbanistico. Attività di libero professionista e attività di ricerca e didattica nel settore della progettazione di Architettura e della pianificazione territoriale e ambientale in campo pubblico e privato. Impegno progettuale al tema del rapporto tra Ecologia e Architettura e quindi alla individuazione di strade praticabili
per uno sviluppo sostenibile delle attività umane di trasformazione del territorio. Fondatore dell' ANAB Associazione Nazionale di Architettura Bioecologica, la prima Associazione nata in Italia nel 1989 sul tema di un Architettura e di un Urbanistica ecocompatibili.
