I am April P. Bond, I'm originally from Baltimore, but I have made a home for myself right here in the beautiful state of North Carolina. Although Baltimore is where my roots lie, I believe that being a part of the culture here in North Carolina has given me the second chance that I so desperately needed. See, I have lived an extraordinary life filled with twists and turns, and they have all played a pivotal role in what I have accomplished today.

My story really begins when I was going through a rough divorce with my now ex husband, who was involved in criminal activities in Baltimore. Once I found out what he was doing with his free time on the evening news, I couldn't help but to feel embarrassed by the revelation. Moving forward was a difficult process and I had a hard time identifying with the April my marriage had created. I realized that the divorce wasn’t only from my husband, but I was also going to have to leave the lifestyle behind as well. The idea of losing the character I created within my marriage drove me into a deep depression, and because I was so disconnected with myself, I was willing to entertain foolish opportunities.

A brief amount of time has passed and I am still dealing with the aftermath of my husband's criminal involvement.

During this dark time I was approached with the opportunity to assume a new identity. I was convinced that this would allow me to uphold the quality of life, my then husband provided for me. Without hesitation I accepted the opportunity and began stealing people's information to open fake accounts in their names. I would then go on shopping sprees using their identity, and credit to make purchases. At the time, it seemed harmless to me. I wasn't really thinking about the fact that this might put me in jail. If I am going to be completely honest, I was already locked up mentally. The idea that I could be someone else for a few hours and escape the embarrassment that was attached to my identity was so attractive. Me being able to get highend items out of the deal was a bonus! The feeling of satisfaction really consumed me and became my addiction.

Obviously I didn't know when enough was enough, and stealing identities became just plan old stealing. I was so consumed by the rush; I felt that I could take anything I could get my hands on. One day I was on a run, it was a pretty bountiful run, and my addiction wouldn’t let me quit.

I just had to go back in for one more rush. When I completed the boost the cops were literally waiting to take me in. Once I was booked, they were able to connect me to previous identity theft gigs, and convicted me in several counties on several charges. Once I completed my threeyear sentence as a consequence of my conviction, I was doing well. I decided to get into Real Estate Investing, while going through that process I needed a way to supplement my income. I applied for a high level position with a pharmaceutical research company and when they ran my background check, my past had finally caught up with me, I wasn't sure what to do next. I felt myself falling back into a depression and was looking for something to get involved in to keep my mind off the fact that I have been labeled as an ex con. I built a rental portfolio with rental properties, and created a real estate company, called A New Way Home, LLC! Business was great, until we were all hit with the massive bomb we now know to be COVID 19, this left me with a fleet of vacant property that was eating at my bottom line, and depression started to make an appearance.

I have faced all types of struggles from being plus size, having short hair, being dark skin, and not being chosen for a lot of gigs....But look at God! What does modeling mean to you?

Modeling is a dream come true to me it means to me my escape from eveything.

Good Mourning Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

There is a season and a time for everything. A time to be born, and to die. A time to plant, and to harvest...and a time to heal.

We must remember to mourn that which has been lost in order to heal. This mourning includes loss of loved ones, relationships, friendships, jobs, and even ourselves. With each loss we experience in life, there is also a small piece of us lost as well. Most times, we are so focused on surviving the loss at hand that we fail to notice the pieces of ourselves that slip away during the grieving process.

We often wonder “how do I go on without him/her?” or feel “my life will never be the same, now that they’re gone.” While the acknowledgment of a change in our lives is necessary, we also must hold space for what is true and of good report about ourselves. A great step forward is to look back. Remember this is more than likely not the first time you’ve lost in life...so look back to how you made it through the many times before. Even if this loss is the first of its kind, it is not the first time you’ve been down and probably won’t be the last time. Just keep living! The same Creator who held you together and carried you through various circumstances is still doing just that...carrying you through! Some days will be tougher than others, and there will be times you feel you are barely even crawling but don’t quit! Your tears may last through the night, but a brighter day is coming. Weeping endures for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Morning comes after the mourning.

I write this little note of encouragement in the wake of the loss of my mother, in addition to other losses and changes over the last year.

Practice good mourning by remembering the happy and special moments, acknowledging your good days and growth, keeping open communication with family and friends, and leaning on our Heavenly Father. You will not only survive, you will THRIVE!

By Chontaé Cuellar's I didn't realize what colorism was until I became an adult. In retrospect, it started as early as I can recall, in grade school I am the fairer skinned of my mother's children. My great-grandmother would always refer to me as "the pretty fine one with all that pretty hair." My mother made it very clear to never make a difference between any of us. That was the first time I'd inadvertantly experienced colorism.

I noticed, again, in retrospect, many people disliked me or had negative comments to make about me on a regular basis just because of my complexion. "Oh, you think you better than everybody else because you're light skinned."

I never focused on my complexion with the exception of being self conscious about my acne. Of course I realized I was fairer than most. However, never embraced it as leverage.

I had a conversation once with a couple of family members. Not sure how we got on the subject, but the question was asked "Chontaé, you don't think you ever obtained a job because of your skin tone?" Without giving it any thought, I said, "of course not. I got every job because of my experience and interview skills." We were both adamant about our position.

However I later started to embrace my beautiful skin and this is the inspiration behind my brand. I want to encourage more people to embrace and celebrate their dark skin tone!

The quest to be light skinned is actually a serious issue where I’m originally from as a huge number of ladies are only interested in skincare products that make them lighter because of the perceived advantage that fairer skinned women have when it comes to attracting a ‘well to do’ mate (spouse) and in various professions, especially in the entertainment industry!

The city of Tyler, TX was on fire July 24th for the first BAM Fashion Soirée! Dre’ The DJ out of Houston, TX kept the vibe going with all runway-hyped jams. Red Carpet Host Kisha Simone, owner of Southern Belle Radio Productions, conducted interviews of guests, models, vendors & the honorees.

VIP tables were filled with well known organizations and businesses from DFW and Atlanta came with their best A-game for their exhibit set up, and a grand prize winner walked away with cash prizes for their exhibit to add to their sales for the day.

Think the ladies were the only eye catchers in the building? Think again! That’s right, the men brought BOLD, AMBITIOUS, and MOTIVATED vibes down the runway. Golden Bag LLC owner, Nikki Wade, worked behind the scenes to give her creative direction on how to don her line of accessories. You never know what the Tyler native will pull out of her GOLDEN BAG.

Phat’z Extension Bar came through with her denim delights, and fun jumper that can be a fun day-fit or a casual girls night out.

There were some very special guests in attendance. The family of Overton, Tx. boutique owner, Mrs. Sandra Jackson presented founder and CEO of BAM Woman Magazine, LaToyia Jordan, with a token of their love. Mrs. Jackson expressed her desires to do a fashion show to LaToyia, but due to Covid19, she passed away in March. The family donated a few of the boutique owners 2 piece ensembles for models to showcase at the beginning of the show.

The runway show ended with honoring the legendary BoJack Allen with the East Texas Style Icon, and the sassy-innovator Diana Lopez with the East Texas Confidence Award.

We Must Go Forward

Growing up, I would hear attitude is everything, or hear parents tell their children to mind their attitudes. In a world full of clichés, unspoken expectations, and opportunities to show the influence of morals, ethics, and manners, one could get caught up in a mental health crisis if overwhelmed by the opinions of another. The push to first teach our children to be seen and not heard, and then convert to social butterflies can be troubling in processes that we truly were not guided to lead at times in as we work to be the perfect parent, aunt, uncle or friend.

The state of the family, church and established entities who have been granted access inside the inner bubble spheres of our private lives must be maintained.

Mental wellness is becoming and increasing topic of interest as our social system has taken a intrinsic beating post the initial sting of COVID-19.

HealthDay News reports “ about a third of COVID-19 patients go on to develop “long-haul” neurological or psychiatric conditions months after being infected.” The new analysis of data from more than 236,000 COVID – 19 survivors focused on neurological and mental health disorders. It found that 34% of patients were diagnosed in the 6 months after infection with the new coronavirus. Mental health issues such as anxiety (17%), mood disorders (14%), substance abuse disorders (7%) and insomnia (5%)were the most commonly diagnosed disorders in a new study led by Paul Harrison of the University of Oxford in England. The impact of COVID-19 teamed with outlying health matters will leave stories to be shared for years to come.

Seanne Wilson is Director of the Women’s Center at Tennessee State University. She is a third generation alumna as her mother, Gydean Fisher and grandfather, John Patterson also graduated from the University.

After graduation in 2009, Seanne was immediately hired by the President’s Office at Tennessee State University as Executive Office Assistant. Seanne was promoted to Tennessee State University’s Alumni Relations and Annual Giving division until April 2014, when she was promoted in 2017 to the Student Affairs division as Director of the Women’s Center.

Seanne began her professional career in the private sector, spending five years at Reemay holding positions in Marketing and Human Resources and then in the public sector working for the State of Tennessee in the Departments of Labor & Workforce Development and Commerce and Insurance.

Seanne successfully networks and collaborates with Nashville female entrepreneurs via the Women’s Center at Tennessee State University. 2020 will be her 11th year directing her Women’s Empowerment conference for ladies wanting to tap into their spiritual and professional “gifts”. She's a mentor to several young women, and enjoys spending time with them each month.

Wilson’s first book is entitled “Overcoming ME”, and was published March 2, 2018. She is most proud that her first book signing was at her alma mater in the Follett Bookstore at Tennessee State University followed by a signing with the June Anderson Women’s Center at Middle Tennessee State University. Her second book, “Overcoming YOU” is due in bookstores and on Amazon September 2020.

A native of Tennessee, Seanne, her sister, Stephanie, and their parents moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where she attended and graduated from elementary and high school Wilson attended Middle Tennessee State University her freshman and sophomore years and Tennessee State University her Junior and Senior year, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology.

Seanne is most proud of her daughter Siane-Kristian Wilson from a previous marriage. Siane currently works with Disney Shanghai, and has worked with Disneyland Hong Kong, Walt Disney World Orlando; Disney Cruise Line (Wonder, Magic, Dream, and Fantasy); Norwegian Cruise Line, and Universal Studios. Her daughter aspires to live and work in New York City as an actress on Broadway.

Thanks to the NAACP’s Empowerment Programs partnership with BeyGOOD’s Black-Owned Small Business Impact Fund, Acting with Mrs. Davis will provide free virtual Theatre Arts classes for children ages 2-18 beginning with its spring season which begins in February.
