Rampant rickshaw ruckus
Pic courtesy: Shawn Fernandes
“Rickshaw! Rickshaw!” - This refrain is heard, while the driver just drives past at a faster speed. Little or nothing has been done about the growing rickshaw nuisance in Bandra, although one might probably find every second person complaining about it. Yet, what do we do about this issue? Bandra Station is a convergence of the Western and Harbour Railway Lines, so a suffocating number of commuters are found scouting rickshaws during the peak hours, much to the delight of rogue drivers. Students and office goers allege that drivers have been fleecing them since long, despite the intermittent Police regulation often jumping signals and over-speeding at free will, as soon as the police are out of
sight. Commuters are charged upto Rs.20 at times, even though the working rate for rickshaws on a sharing basis is Rs.10 per seat. In sharing mode, sometimes 4 or even 5 passengers are taken. Safety is compromised. It has been repeatedly noticed that this problem only aggravates during the Mount Mary Festival, which gives these unabashed drivers the license to charge exorbitant rates to unassuming pilgrims. The Bandra police had somehow managed to marginally curb this menace during the Festival last year by keeping them in a monitored queue. However, it is a well known fact that they are barely able to sustain this as a consistent practice.

Choose corruption or face the New taxes on gold provoke a consequences nationwide strike by jewellers
The BMC Demolition Squad swung into action on a selective basis at the shops in Gasper Enclave, St. John Road, on 7th March 2012. It was late morning, hours before the 24 hour notice deadline & without any hearing, that this action was taken. They used bulldozers and the accompanying authorities (including about 12 police of both genders) treated the shop owners like common criminals. The legal walls (in the sanctioned plan) were broken and retractable awnings damaged – just to appease the building residents and show that some action was taken – while some shops were surprisingly spared. These tax-paying business owners who are creating jobs for locals, helplessly saw their properties being destroyed in front of their employees & clients. The collective loss was approx. Rs. 4 lakhs in terms of money – yet, as one shop owner claimed, “We chose not to be corrupt, as this will not get our country forward”. Although the authorities did not ask for a bribe, creating fear is equivalent to extortion. Harassment leads people to choose corruption or face the consequences. The Gasper residents claim severe noise nuisance & bad hygienic conditions caused by the shops. They want all the shops to stop conducting business, as in their opinion they are creating a lot of problems for the residents. They do not allow common toilets to be used by employees of these shops, as they do not consider these shops as
part of the society. This conflict or ‘internal war’ has been going on for years. Is there a middle path solution ? Some food shops claim that their hygienic measures are as per international standards – and they have BMC approvals. The other shops claim that the noise factor is negligible. The shop owners claim that their businesses were operational much before any resident even bought their flats – so flat owners knew that their buildings would have shops on the ground floor. They claim that the ‘otlas’ are part of the building plan – and are a common feature for shops in the city. J. Merchant, a bystander during the demolition, promptly told us: “These shops are within a private compound, whereas we have ‘BMC approved’ stalls right on the footpath opposite Balaji Hotel, Hill Road - on the very land (that had graves) handed over to the government for road widening. This is outrageous. There are hundreds of similar cases across Bandra, Khar & Santacruz, where a person walking on a footpath has to come on to the road (that may have heavy traffic) and then continue walking on the footpath – this can result in strange accidents. What right has the BMC to deny citizens proper continuity in footpaths? This situation is the perfect setting for accidents – just waiting to happen. Our new councilors should take up this matter on a priority basis” Hari Keswani
Gold - that most precious of all commodities is all set to become dearer and how! The Union Budget 20122013 was really bad news for the gold trade. The introduction of excise on unbranded jewellery, the doubling of import duty on gold and the levy of a consumer tax have combined to make life miserable for sellers, buyers and artisans alike. The bullion business is set to be negatively impacted with lakhs of artisans and traders going out of business. Customers will be badly affected too as the initial impact on the pricing will be an increase of more than Rs 600/per tola. Plus, the new consumer tax will prevent many from making their usual purchases. Middle-class consumers will certainly feel the pinch as the valued metal goes well beyond their purchasing capacity. Most of the gold jewellers in Mumbai and across the country have been on strike since March 17th, the day after the budget speech. There was a mammoth gathering at Azad Maidan of nearly 25,000 jewellers, artisans and bullion traders protesting against these announcements in the budget. The shutters of all jewellery shops have remained closed even in Bandra. The 1% excise levy on unbranded jewellery will affect all the customized purchases we make at the jewelers that include designing and shaping of rings, necklaces and so on. This move will give an edge to branded jewellery like Tanishq and D’Damas that currently provide jewellery at exorbitant rates.
Besides, the imposition of excise duty could end up in harassment of jewellers by excise officials on the look out for hefty bribes. The necessary paperwork and tax formalities will only complicate the problem further. In addition to this hassle, the government has decided to raise the import duty on gold to 3%. This move could result in a return to the smuggling era as the price of imported would once more be much higher in the domestic market than abroad. In fact, many people would prefer to shop for gold in places like Dubai than buy it at a higher rate back home. Finally, the consumer tax proposed by the government will certainly make people think twice before making gold purchases. Jewellers will now need to deduct tax at source for purchases above Rs 2 lakhs from July 1st onwards. This will leave the purchases at the mercy of taxation authorities. Furthermore, those who buy more than Rs 2 lakhs of gold need to produce a PAN card while making the purchase. It will only add to the inconvenience faced by customers. Many will simply choose not to buy jewellery and stay away from the hassles. So, let’s hope that the government rolls back these detrimental decisions in the interest of the jewelers, artisans and middle-class consumers. It’s not just the precious metal but our entire way of life that’s under attack by these anti-consumer budgetary announcements. Vivek Pereira

Roads & citizens social responsibility
The biggest complaint citizens have today is the condition of our roads and pavements. What has been observed, however, is that some of the roads in Bandra are in apathetic state – even though they have been recently repaired; while there are others which are still good, in spite of having been resurfaced more than five years ago. The only explanation is the presence of vigilant ALM / Residents Association. Where there are active, co-operative & vigilant ALM’s, things move smoothly. So, lets share a few success stories which have been reported in the ‘Press’ years ago: • The first example is the picturesque winding Pali Hill Road, which has been developed & maintained for years by a committed Pali Hill Residents Association –under the leadership of Dr. Shukla and Madhu Poplai. • If it wasn’t for the Mount Mary ALM, under the guidance of Maria D’Souza, we would never have perfect laying of paver blocks.
- A case in point was the re-surfacing of St. Andrew’s Road in 2006. The residents led by Earnest Fernandes and John Soares got many senior citizens involved & personally monitored the asphalting of their road. The networking was so good, that the workers who had worked through the night were served tea and snacks for breakfast by the sisters of Holy Family Hospital. • The flood of June 2005 was a wakeup call for us (the area where I live). Perry Road, which is a concretized arterial road – never gets flooded. However, the seven perpendicular roads were used to get flooded. The ALM’s had approached the ward office to redo our pavements. However, we were approached by the Central Road Agency with a proposal (as part of the Brimstovad Project) to lay large storm water drains under the pavements – and for culverts to be made at cross sections. This meant that the work would now take more than 6 months to complete. The Perry Road ALM looked at the larger picture – and not only agreed, but
supervised the entire operation. Young members like Anil Joseph and Neil Smith interacted with the contractor to check on the quality & progress of the work. Thanks to the Perry Road ALM & the revamping of the system, there has been no flooding for the last 7 years. • In November 2006, the huge project of concretizing Hill Road was undertaken by the Central Board Agency. The High Court had appointed a Road Monitoring Committee to supervise the work. The neighbouring citizens promptly formed a 15 member committee of their own, taking on different responsibilities. That we managed to save heritage structures and a school ground is another story, but the technical team with David Cardoz, Khushru Parekh & P.K. Mukherjee (and many others) interacted with the Chief Engineer, Roads – Mr. Barkaiya. They succeeded in the proper laying of utility agencies at the ‘shoulders’ of the road, which have helped to control flooding. Unfortunately, Hill Road is still a mess – as there is no functioning ALM – and hawkers
are ruling the roost. • As we speak, Dr. Peter Dias Road & Perry Cross ALM’s have supervised their road work. A lot has been learnt by ALM’s which have worked with the BMC, inspite of a few hiccups: • We have learnt that the temperature of the asphalt, while being unloaded, should be 120 – 160 degrees Celsius. It is mandatory for the contractor to use a special thermometer to check this temperature. • We should not allow utility services to dig indiscriminately. • We must scrutinize their work orders. • We must interact with the Traffic Department, as asphalting is done in the night. If we do not monitor the road work in our neighbouring areas, as part of our Citizen’s Social Responsibility; then our taxes are literally going down the drain. Shyama Kulkarni

Letters to the Editor Are girls safe in Bandra?
MMRDA grounds Anna v/s Congress
Girls have been followed by guys who flash their pistols on Turner Road & other lonely roads of Bandra... what can be done about this ? This is just one step towards something that could get worse as each day passes. The concerned authorities need to act promptly. Can't a girl's life be free from fear?
While Anna Hazare was refused concession on the rent of MMRDA ground, Bandra - for his protest against corruption as IAC was not a registered trust, Mumbai Congress Committee got it twice in 2009 for holding party rallies. The Prominent face of Kripya Shankar Singh together with his mentors. Apoorva Khan Leslie Almeida ........................................................... ........................................................... Better Bandra? Appreciation This is some food for thought & prompt action for our beloved 'elected representatives': - The Bandra Talao is going greener by the day. It needs cleaning & maintenance. - Our roads need more patrolling – to make them safer. - Our promenades are great – but mischievous ‘gangs’ should be monitored. - All one way roads need traffic cops 24/7 to ensure that the law is kept. Of course, citizens need to co-operate – but the concerned authorities need to do their part. Farooq Ali ........................................................... Both sides Parking Many narrow roads which act as crucial links to hub spots are further clogged by the traffic police not taking heed to parking on both sides of the road. This leads to traffic jams – that can be avoided, if free flow or vehicles is allowed. I feel that locals & concerned authorites shold be very strict about parking on both sides of roads. Reporting and action should be as immediate as possible to discourage motorist from creating bottlenecks. Umesh Bhojwani ......................................................... Use Foothpaths for Walking not parking Several roads in Bandra have reasonably good sidewalks/pavements/footpaths but few users; St. Andrew road is a good example. Let's use sidewalks instead of walking on the main carriageway and thus make Bandra a safer place for pedestrians. Vehicles and pedestrians should not share the same space!
I have been through your local newspaper... it is really good... and I am sure you put in a lot of effort... God bless you.. and your team. Marita Nazareth ........................................................... Seeking your support for our proposed learning center at Bandstand We would like to extend the work being carried on Carter road to Bandstand ie provide free coaching for slum children around that area. In this connection we would seek your support in any way you can provide for the venture. At the moment the plan is to offer evening classes from 5 7 pm everyday as we have been adviced that most municiple schools in that area have morning sessions. Our requirements are as below. 1. An introduction to the Bandstand residents association and any support in terms of acquiring permission for use of space on Bandstand for our classes. 2. Leads to any sheltered space in the area which will allow us to conduct classes during monsoons. (A hall within a school or any of the local catholic associations in the area. 3.Announcement regarding the center inviting municiple school students in the area 4.Notices seeking volunteers for teaching & for doners for snacks, stationary, study material etc for the children.
Adarsh Scam A housing society in which top politicians and bureaucrats own flats has come up on a Bandra plot which was reserved to construct a hostel for students from backward classes. And like the controversial Adarsh society in Colaba, Bandra’s Sai Prasad Co-operative Housing Society also violates coastal regulation zone (CRZ) rules, a query under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed. Congress leader Kripashankar Singh, his brother-in-law Surendra Pratap Uma Shankar Singh, former BMC commissioner Jairaj Phatak, joint commissioner of police Himanshu Roy, several IAS and IPS officers, Ram Shankar Pandey (who says he sells vegetables in the APMC market in Navi Mumbai) and a school peon from Dhule with an annual income of Rs55,000 - own houses in the 10storey building with 1,500sqft area flats. This group ‘Silent Voice’ RTI activists do not go after stalls - who are cooking on roads, - despite high court order. Many of them have patronage of Politicians, but go after big sharks, risking their lives. Sai Prasad Society is just the tip of the iceberg, there are many more in H/W ward that will come under the scanner in due course, which will be exposure at the right time by Silent Voice, who have a lot of documents, housing societies, club houses etc having obtained occupation certificate, now certain club expansions are being investigated. All these have patronage of certainMinisters. Leslie Almeida ......................................................... ... Poor Road Lighting
The road from Anthony’s Garage (end of St. Paul’s Road Extension) linking it to St. Andrew’s Road (near Candies) has very poor lighting. This situation attracts couples & others to use this area for all sorts of activities after sunset. While he maybe a very great player, Every time I walk on the streets of Bandra I end up hurting my legs be- it should remembered that the country cause of the fancy paver blocks that - and not individual records come first. Michael Clarke, in the recently connever seem to be done properly by the BMC, its like a totally scary situation cluded Australia/India test series - alfor people like me who don’t have a though he was batting with over 300 runs, never went for Lara’s record of vehicle to move about in. I wish these paver blocks could be put 400 runs, but declared the innings properlyacross the roads in Bandra as ‘closed’, so that India could be bowled Australia won the test, with plenty soon as possible as the children will out. to spare, because of Clarke’s sacrifice also be facing alot of trouble of putting the country before his per. sonal glory. - Apeksha Bhattacharya Dr J.Peter Rodrigues

Calvary in Bandra?
It’s nothing like you ever imagined! I wish that I could just see it thro’ my Nana’s eyes, in all its past glory & spectacle. An image, she so dauntingly etched in our minds - of a Chapel & a house, nested within the topography of Bandra ‘then’. An image of different hues, a reflection of her thoughts & memories, she so distinctively carved for us. Take the road leading to Pali Hill and just opposite ‘Executive Enclave’ you will spot a humongous building, which has risen in the last three-four years. Just besides it, lays ‘Calvario’ with few centuries old trees - and in its run down ‘avatar’. Referred to in earlier times as the ‘Chapel of Our Lady of Calvary’, Pali Hill, Bandora; today it lies in ruins - dilapidated, orphaned and abandoned, creepers surrounding its periphery, amidst a concrete forest all around. The shabby and run-down colored window panes enable you to peek into the once resounding haven. The wrecked stained glasses, shimmer in the streak of sun rays that glance past them, reflecting a deserted and eerie feel. A statue which stood at the foot of the hill, referred to as Our Lady of Sorrows was shipped by a family kin all the way from Rome. With love from Rome, the statue with its hands stretched ahead and looking towards heaven is ‘one of its kind’. This statue now lies at the foot of St. Anne’s Church, Bandra - while the fourteen crosses were donated to a Church in ‘Dongri’. They now line the hill there, (see pic) leading to Our Lady
of Bethlehem Church ‘Stations of the Cross’, Dongri. During the period of Lent, ‘Stations of the Cross’ would be enacted with everyone ascending to the top, just like they probably did at Mount Calvary, around 2000 years ago. 14 crosses dotted the way and were spread across the hill, some of them diagonally opposite & some just few steps ahead of the latter. Tombstones once laden with a chronology of family history now probably lay buried beneath a mound of mud and debris. Thankfully those who have been laid to rest in the Chapel, their names and details have been noted. Reliance Energy who regularly dispatched their electric bills, refer to the place as ’37, Calvario Pali Hill Road, Bandra ‘W' and not Nargis Dutt Road, as it is referred to now. The Chapel, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and called ‘Our Mother Of Mount Calvary’ was founded and endowed in 1890 by the very Rev. Manuel Anthony and Mr. Peter John, sons of Gabriel and Joanna Fonseca of ‘Parwar’ - a village known up to 1850. His grace Dom Antonio Pedro da Costa declared it open on 17th September 1890. The family who owned the ‘holy turf ’ now spread near, far and wide - have lovely memories of the place, just like my grandmother did. I am glad; I did get a chance to visit ‘Calvario’ in Bandra - and was able to capture many images of the place in its current despair. Floyd Almeida

Jamshed Navroze Celebration A large number of devotees gathered at the Tata Parsi Fire Temple, which is about 127years old, situated opposite Bandra Police Station. They offered prayers on the occasion of ‘Jamshed Navroze’ and greeted one another Navroz Mubarak. Navroz is celebrated by Parsis, Zoroastrians and Iranians - as a seasonal and historical festival to commemorate the Coronation of King Jamshed, after he saved the world from the great disaster and established his settlement ‘Var-e-Jam Kard’ - the settlement of Jamshed. Mr. Billimoria Jehanbux, a devotee adds, “We have a special way of celebrating this festival by arranging a circular table, having seven items with letters shin or sin of the Persian alphabet. The items may include shir-milk, sharab- wine, shaker-sugar, shama-candle, smaghsumuc, shikesh- coin, sib- apple, sabzivegetables, sarekeh- vinegar. Additional items like gold fish bowl and a picture of a Damavand mountain are also kept.” Head priest Mr. Freddy Khambata adds, “Jamshed Navroz is festival of hope , life and colour. It brings the message of renewal, rejuvenation, gratitude, joy, light, life , equality and victory of good over evil. May this Jamshed Navroze bring a happy, cheerful and bright year for all humanity.” Sir Minaz
Rampant rickshaw ruckus Contd. from page 1> Another common problem is that whimsical drivers have been found to refuse commuters a ride to their destinations as per their convenience. This has become quite a rampant habit that has left most commuters exasperated and helpless who are consequently forced to pay much more than the actual fare. With the Police showing little enthusiasm against such errant drivers, a group of enthusiastic citizens are found to take up this job from time to time and are found patrolling the Bandstand Promenade to bring this situation in control as also to bring to book such arrogant drivers. However, it is worth mentioning that the RTO must be commended for their drive against rickshaw drivers with tampered meters as it has been largely successful in Bandra. Caution - Crime Cases Increasing Crime - in the form of chain snatching involving senior citizens are getting common in and around Bandra. Deserted roads are the focus of these gangs who come from the surrounding hutment areas to ‘earn their living’ from robbing innocent people. The modus operandi is to send a group of boys to distract you, while the swoop is made at the right time with bike-riders or groups in rickshaws, who swiftly escape with the loot. We have several reports of helpless ‘soft targets’ who have lost their purse or gold chains, bangles & even ear rings – with gangs using fear and extortion as tools. In Pali Village, a laptop was robbed from the second floor. Robbers, claiming to be service providers (internet, cable or phone…) put people off guard, while looting household valuables in broad daylight. Brothels are mushrooming in posh areas – where no one would expect such activities. Drugs are now available at almost every corner of Bandra – resulting in drug-related crime. Our youth are being targeted by the drug mafia. As concerned citizens, we need to do something - and soon ! Will creating more job opportunities locally help curb crime? Are the concerned authorities doing enough? How can we help save this situation? Bandra Buzz Team

The curious case of the disappearing Cottages
It was once said that if you threw a stone into the air in Bandra, you would “either hit a pig or a Pereira”. The pigs have long gone and the Pereiras scattered - and following the path of the pig are the cottages, so typical of Bandra. These Bandra relics of yesteryear are now sparsely scattered and increasingly caged by the concrete jungle of the evergrowing metropolis. Join us in our journey across Bandra, as
we pay homage to those tenacious enough to hold on to their heritage - and fiercely fight off the land sharks, as we learn a little bit about roots of the Bandra we live in. We kick off our journey with one of the oldest cottages in Bandra. Greyville, nestled between the trees on St. Leo’s Road, this cottage even outdates the heritage structure Priscilla Villa, at the beginning of the same road, albeit by only a year.
Named after late Gregory Rodrigues, who commissioned the building of the cottage in 1928; it was then the sole structure in the area, which was then just open fields. Deemed too lonely and isolated by the owners, it was originally given out on rent. Today, the area is a far cry from a desolate expanse - though fortunately it isn’t boxed in like most cottages today and is neighbor to a two story bungalow. It also happens to be opposite Dino
Morea’s cottage, one of only two others remaining on the road. With a well manicured garden, which once housed a variety of fruit trees, the cottage has a decidedly cozy feel to it. Greyville is now home to Gregory’s son Godfrey Rodrigues and his family and the original structure still remains, with the addition of a small wing as a separate house. Ajay Dyas

Hey Jude
“Who is going to be a famous little rocker like his dad then?” those were the last famous loving words a Beatle said to his son-John Charles Julian Lennon the son of John and Cynthia Lennon. Born on 8th April 1963 in Liverpool. Initially the fact that John Lennon was married and had a son was concealed from the public. Lennon inspired one of his father’s most famous songs Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds whose words describe a picture the boy had drawn- a water color painting of his friend Lucy O’Donnell. When Lennon was five his parents divorced due to Yoko Ono. Paul Mcartney wrote Hey Jude to console him over the divorce. Originally the song was called Hey Jules then later he changed the name to Jude because it was easier to sing.Yoko had almost ensured to it that John made no contact with his son until the early 1970’s on the instigation of his then girlfriend May Pang he began to see his son more regularly. John bought him a drum machine for Christmas in 1973 and encouraged his interests in music by showing him a few chords. He made his debut at the age of eleven on his father’s album Walls And Bridges playing the drums on the song Ya-Ya later saying “dad had I known you were going to put it in the album I would’ve played much better” After his father’s death he was not included in his father’s will and was upset with the fact that he even had to buy mementos of his father at auctions! Nonetheless Julian began his singing career by launching his first album called Valotte produced by Phil Ramone. The album was nominated for the best new artist in 1985. Then came other songs that were hits namely Stick Around, Because( famous by The Dave Clark Five) and other songs. In 2009 Lennon created a partnership with Todd Meagher and Michael Birch called The Revolution LLC. Through this company he released a tribute song and EP Lucy honoring the memory of Lucy O’Donnell the little girl who inspired the song Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds with 50% of the proceeds going to the fund Lupus Research. In 2011 October 3rd he released a new album called Everything Changes. Julian Lennon still continues to carry his father’s legacy further. Revati Bajaj

An Academy for Music
Mehboob studios witnessed the fusion of ‘Bollywood Beats’ and Hollywood Hip-Hop on 30th March 2012. This star spangled event hosted by MTV, saw young Indian talent Javraj Singh, who represented India for a global music event at Madrid in 2011 - and was selected to be one of the 30 musicians to be a part of the Red Bull music academy’s two week music camp. The special guests included Vishal Dadlani, the vocalist for Pentagram, notable Bol-
lywood music director Vishal, who is given credit for many hit Bollywood songs - and famed hip hop producer Justin Blaze from Hollywood. Justin has worked with artists like Jay Z, Eminem, Mariah Carey - and many other big names from the US music fraternity. The show - which claimed to be a mix of talk show and musical performances, started off with a clip of the introduction of the academy by Anusha Dandekar of MTV and headmaster of
the academy Torsten Schmidt, after which Jivraj Singh gave a live performance of his alternative drumming. Jivraj told us that the time spent by him at the academy was one of the most inspiring times of his life for his music. Vishal gave the audience an insight on the making of ‘Sheela ki Jawani’ and expressed his views about evolving Indian music from its initial stage of imitating the western music, to the current trends of originality in traditional and fusion. Justin also came forward about how Hollywood is incorporating Indian beats in their music. Their views of how music runs in full circles over the years – and is still evolving with every passing decade, struck a chord with the audience - to a point where everyone could relate to it. The event had an interesting ‘Question and Answer’ round. Vishal and Justin’s witty answers never failed to be funny. Torsten shed light on how ‘The Red Bull Music Academy’ was trying to inspire and bring together music talent from around the world. The event concluded with an awesome performance by Vishal and Justin. Together they created an ‘indo-western’ hip hop song, which got them a well deserved applause. Sairaj Borkarr
The Sound of Music is an exceptional family entertainer
It is truly going to be Broadway evenings once again in Mumbai, as the screen musical “The Sound of Music”, an adaptation of the 1959 Broadway production, comes alive once again on the Mumbai stage with a treasure chest of songs that have delighted many for
decades, each a classic, even today. Delna Mody playing Maria, a spirited and lively nun, is sent to be governess to the widowed Baron Von Trapp (Dalip Tahil) who has seven children. Maria manages to tone his icy whistle command for the children and warms his heart to their needs. Maria brings music back in the Von Trapp household and even though Von Trapp contemplates a second marriage to Baroness Schraeder (Lucky Morani), he can’t take his eyes off Maria. He soon weds her. Full marks have to go to the lead pair Delna and Dalip, who put in great charm and emotion. The rigorous months of pre-production training, has made the musical reach its 3rd Season. This has resulted in flawless performances from the children, seven of them from Bandra. We have - Simone Ann Alvares who took on the role of the animated, talkative and truthful Brigitta, Jordan D’silva (Kurt), Aidan D’silva (Friedrich), Akeesha Rodrigues / Danielle D’silva (Marta), Kimberly Van Drine (Gretel), and Eden D’souza (Louisa). The children whose age ranges from 9 to 16
years surely do justice to their role, be it on the lively dialogue, sometimes jocular, or in recreating the numerous classics one of them being “So Long Farewell”. There are various other plots played out extremely well. There’s Liesl (Simran Jehani) who is in love with Hitler youth Rolf (Shazad) and jointly sing the beautiful “Sixteen going on Seventeen”. There’s also Max Detweiler (Darius Shroff) who sings a duet with Baroness Schraeder “How Can Love Survive”. Choreography by Karla Singh and Sandeep Soparrkar was precise. But all said and done, it is the music, recreated and arranged by Merlin D’souza that will keep you engaged and singing along. It is a hallmark of the production, a story that is touching, involving love, family, personal and world drama. Where else can you find all this on one platform? Advait Hazarat and Raëll Padamsee deserve a pat on the back for directing and producing the musical with detail and bringing back childhood memories. Verus Ferreira

Bandra Reclamation packed with 12,000 horsepower!!
The SCC (Super Car Club) is the only Club for super car owners in India. It is the brainchild of two diverse individuals united in this common passion. The Super Car Club, a members’ only Club, has Mr. Gautam Singhania, CMD of Raymond Limited as its Patron and Founder, and Mr. Hormazd Sorabjee, Editor & Publisher of Autocar India as its Co-Founder. The founding year of SCC, 2009 was an exciting event-packed year, comprising get-togethers and exclusive track days, at the most prestigious locations across the country to allow owners a chance to truly experience their cars’ performance. Also, the Club organizes a large super car annual show in Mumbai, for the city to breathe in the super car flurry. One of the biggest events that Mumbai has ever seen was the SCC show on 22nd of January,2012. Mr. Gautam Singhania specially flew down Sir Valentino Balboni, the chief designer & test driver to Lamborghini. He can also be called as “The man who’s driven every Lamdorghini ever produced”. The streets of Mumbai were jammed from Marine Drive NCPA right upto the domestic airport with lakhs of people who woke up that morning to witness the super car parade. Since then, the activity calendar of SCC has only become busier and its spread has gone nationwide. The mem-
bers base has now almost quadrupled within few years of SCC’s inception. Its members today span the country and the Club has Chapters in New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai, in addition to its base, Mumbai. All the events are coordinated, put together & made a success by Mr. Dilip Joshi, who’s the Chairman of Events of the SCC. It’s not every day you get to see a Ferrari, or a Lamborghini, or an AMG or a Porsche, or a few of each of them - or more appropriately, a huge fleet of SuperCars zooming down the road in perfect sync & coordination. Well, but when you do, they leave you awestruck in exhileration !!! 8 am on Sunday the 25th of March, 2012 was a jaw-dropping sight. Yes, there were around 30 beasts with the best curves & in all colors , that set out to Pune. It was a fun-drive to The Oxford Resorts and Golf Course on the outskirts of Pune where they were hosted for brunch by Mr Rohan Seolekar, the owner of the premises, and a SCC member. They assembled near the Bandra end of the Sea-Link early morn - and by the time all of those sleek and powerful machines arrived, it looked like all of them were readying their engines at the starting grid of an F1 lineup. Any supercar lover passing along would have thought it was their lucky day, as other vehicles passing along
stopped to take a look at the spectacle and take pictures of the rare sight. Moin Motiwala, a Bandra-based Jeweller & SCC member was supercharged that morning to drive to Pune. He says that such a long-distance drive was planned after a long span & he couldn’t sleep the night before, just thinking about the fun lined up for the morning. It was one of his best experiences. He laughs & says, “I’d miss my friends wedding over today’s Pune drive, because 25th Feb will come only once in my lifetime, but my friends can get married again & again. Infact the most difficult task for me is to
wake me up every morning, but that night I slept in an auto awake mode” He also added “Our cars are built differently from normal cars & our engines need a good run & exposure to retain their prime state. We often plan drives through BBM & sms & the word spreads like wild fire and we meet in no time to get on to the horrible roads of our city. We have no option, but to drive on them.” So the next time you see a fleet of those ultimate drives cruising past you, be sure its them making the most of their float ! Royal Enfield owner’s day
History repeats itself, as more than 450 Royal Enfield Riders get together on 1st April 2012. The FIRST Sunday of April is celebrated as the ONE RIDE day, where Royal Enfield - Owners all over the world are encouraged to take their motorcycles out and ride. Last year the ONE RIDE took place on the 3rd of April and was celebrated across the world. This celebration is in line with Royal Enfield’s philosophy of promoting the adventure and leisure
riding under its 'keep riding' initiative. Although each rider could have his or her own individual 'One Ride', Royal Enfield encouraged them to either start the ride from any of their Brand Stores/Dealership/Distributor or Service stations or end at them for an easy count. Special ONE RIDE commemorative stickers and cloth patches were distributed amongst the riders who proudly adorned their bikes, helmets and jackets
with these memorabilia. Even if the riders were not able to join any of the ONE RIDE celebrations they were inspired to still take out their beloved Royal Enfield on this day and show the chrome and the polished tank some sunlight. Vivek Daswarey (37, Lawyer) said “it was my first event with RE and I was surprised to see such a big group watching the spirit of the riders. I love riding and came here to take a break - and to meet people with similar interest.”
Mohit Khanna (24) said “I’m here to celebrate the “ROYAL” brotherhood. The event was legendary and epic.” Eric Barron (24) said “I’m here to show how proud I feel to be a member of the RE family. It was freaking fantastic experience for me.” Jyotsna Shinde (25) said “I love motorcycling - and what better than on a RE.” Hima Jatania

A Garage sale to Remember Managing food on the run.. Food is one of life’s pleasures. It is also important for fuelling your body and investing in your overall health. As an active person, you may want to eat well, but you struggle and tend to make poor nutritional choices that can actually increase your stress levels. As a result, energy high’s and low’s, lethargy or unwanted gain or loss is what one is left with. One basic trick to winning with nutrition is to prevent you from getting too hungry. A little conscious planning would go a long way. A few tips to manage a busy schedule:
‘Candies’, at St. Andrew’s Road played host to a very different kind of event this March titled the ‘Hamara Footpath's Garage Sale. This event that took place on the 16th and 17th of March was like none other. It’s organizers claim that it was Mumbai's biggest garage sale. But the motive behind this event was not to earn a profit but rather to raise funds for under privileged children living on the streets. People from all over the city flocked to ‘Candies’ to witness this unique event unfold. Bands and musicians like Dischordian, Airport, Ayush Shreshta, Spilt, Raxit Tiwari, Sid Coutto put up a great show -and managed to woo the crowd with their magical music. Another major attraction were the clothes that were put up on sale. These clothes were donated by people around the city. Some of the donors included fashion designers like Swapnil Shinde, Sapna Bimani and Sukriti Grover. Major
brands like Calvin Klien, Ferragamo, D&G, Mango, Zara, Creo, Promod, Victoria’s Secret, RockyS etc. - which were up for sale, sold like hot cakes. all the items were being sold at a subsidized price which turned out to be an awesome bargain for most of the buyers such as myself. To top it all up, a free foot massage was offered by Metta Foot Reflexology Spa - for those who just want to let of some steam and a free ‘poi workshop’ was also held in the earlier part of the day. The organisation would use 100% of the money that was raised from the event to bring a smile on the faces of the children that they support. The money would be used to make a difference to the lives of these little angels whose childhoods were stolen from them by poverty. In a nutshell, this unique garage sale didn't fail to impress.

The Bombay Catholic Sabha, Mount Carmel’s Unit of Bandra Deanery – graciously played host to felicitate our newly elected Municipal Councilors: Karen D’Mello (Ward # 96), Asif Zakaria(Ward # 95) & Dr. (Ms) Priatama Savant (Ward # 90) On Saturday, 30th March 2012, 7:30pm at Mount Carmel Backyard – Bandra Deanery Guardian, Ronnie Mendonca kick started the event with a short welcome &introduction. He said that the BCS, Bandra Deanery, comprising eight units (parishes) across Bandra would love to interact with our ward councilors, whenever any situation arises. Also, we expect our councilors to get in touch with us, whenever necessary. A floral tribute was then given to each municipal councilor. Each councilor was given a chance to speak out their mind. This was followed by an interactive ‘meet & greet’ session, as snacks were served by Daphne Sardinha & others. This ‘one-on-one’ chat with our councilors gave the crowd an opportunity to personally speak to their elected representative. A group photograph was taken.
Theresa Aguiar told us,”This is the beginning – and not the end.” Ronnie Mendonsa says,”This is the first time that the catholics of Bandra have got together to ensure that their corporators know that we are here to work with them – and they are here to work with us. Only if we work together, can Bandra be a better place – and remain as the ‘Queen of the Suburbs’.” Faust Gonsalves added, ”We have called this meeting to work as a team, not as individuals.” Our councilors reacted positively. Asif said,”I know that the Bandra Deanery, Bombay Catholic Sabha, has been an active group – always coming forward with citizen’s local issues. It was great for me to come & interact with them. I am looking forward to working with them collectively for the betterment of our area. Karen added, “It’s nice to know that Bandra is so active, so that we can work together – because we can’t just work without feedback from concerned citizens. Together, we can make Bandra a better place.” Bandra Buzz Team

Wenden Caterers S.C. to host Hockey League Hockey is hitting the grounds of Bandra again. Yes, a field Hockey tournament is being organised by the 'Wenden Caterers Sports Club' at the Fr. Donnelly Gymkhana, St. Stanislaus Grounds, Bandra (W). The WCSC league will feature all the top teams of Bandra, and will be spread over a period of 5 Sundays, starting on 15th April 2012. Teams that have confirmed so far are Companeroes, Chimbai S.C., Somlands, Rebels, Freunds, Sea View S.C., Hugh Academy and S.A.I.S.A. In the early 90’s a newly married couple decided to bond their relationship by starting a catering business. Together they formed ‘Wenden Caterers’. This prompted a few friends to promote the enterprise by way of sport. These friends started taking part in tournaments in and around Bandra under the banner of ‘Wenden Caterers’. They made the finals in many a tournament, be it hockey, football or volleyball and even won a few (including hearts). Unfortunately, two of the team members Wendell Gomes (proprieter of Wenden Caterers) and Bradley Bast succumbed to illnesses that they were suffering from. Thus ‘Wenden Caterers Sports Club’ was founded to honour Mr. Wendell Gomes & Mr. Bradley Bast, both excellent sports personalities, who had one goal – to give back to sports and also to society and the community in general, as much as they could during their life. Wendell & Bradley were two friends who had one dream, i.e. to promote and encourage youngsters to get involved in some sporting activity or the other. Wendell represented St Stanislaus High School in Football, Hockey and
Athletics. After school he went on to represent Companeroes, H & R Johnson, Tata Electric and finally Central Bank of India. He used to take great pleasure in encouraging young players by gifting them kits and hockey sticks. Bradley played for St. Stanislaus High School, Khalsa College and Gymkhana, Mahindra Tractors and Bank of India. He also represented Mumbai in the Junior Nationals and Maharashtra at the School Nationals. Apart from being an active sportsman, Bradley was a compere ‘par excellante’. He entertained the spectators at rink hockey tournaments with his nonstop commentary thus keeping the game alive and spectators enthralled. We would like to pursue the same vision they had & have hence set up this club to organize tournaments in order to encourage youngsters to participate & compete on the sports field competitively & more so to revive sport in general as it has been a very integral part of Bandra. The club will also be taking this opportunity to sponsor kits for the St. Catherine's boys under 8 and under 10 teams. For those of you who feel you or your organization could contribute by advertising your product or service, sponsor or co-sponsor the tournament, display a banner, please feel free to contact Mrs. Denita Gomes (9820233999) for further details. So here’s to the tournament, we are looking forward to your participation because a tournament without spectators is incomplete. Spread the news, Far & Wide…. See you on the 15th April 2012.
