RISING ROAD RAGE

B

andra Bandstand has a lonely ‘inner’one-way road called B.K. Bhabha Road. Just off the cross-section in the middle of B.J. Road is a fork leading to Shahrukh Khan’s bungalow. On 26th July, around 8:30 pm, two teenagers (around 17 years) along with their girl-friends (who they were apparently trying to impress) were speeding up this road in a white Honda car. On trying to avoid a pot-hole (due to some BMC pipe work in progress) – they hit the electric box just outside ‘Sarita Apartments’ with great impact – causing it to tilt (shown in the pic), while the car spun around. Residents reported having heard a

very loud sound. Two cars parked on either side of the electric box were also damaged. The girls panicked & left the car. Out of fear, the driver reversed & tried to make an U-Turn. In doing so, the car hit an elderly woman, Esmie Jacobs (residing at Sarita Apartments), who was just alighting from her car – making her unconscious and forcefully pushing her under her car. Without any thought of helping the injured woman, the teenagers sped away in the reverse direction of this one-way road, trying to escape their situation. They drove towards Hill Road (with their car’s silencer hanging), trying to reach Turner Road via St. Paul Road – where they got stuck

in bumper-to-bumper traffic. That’s where they got caught by a concerned citizen & taken back to the accident site. The angry locals wanted to beat the scared teenagers, but some wiser council prevailed. The teenagers did not want their parents to know that they had taken their car. Finally they were taken to the Bandra Police Station, when the cops arrived at the accident site and a case of rash driving without a license(under age) was filed. Meanwhile, the accident victim Esmie Jacobs was serious & had to be taken to Holy Family Hospital. At the time of this report going to the press, Esmie was recovering.

Independence Day & the Fight Against Terrorism

The 72 virgins whom Osama Bin Laden encountered on the other side after his martyrdom were actually the spirits of young male suicide bombers brainwashed by the Al Qaeda. A harsh fate awaits the members of the Indian Mujahideen who have killed so many innocent people at the behest of the ISI. The recent bomb blasts in Mumbai on 13th July, 2011 once again proves how little these terrorists value human lives. An interesting fact is that there was no mail sent by these tech-savvy terrorists this time round unlike the previous cases. Sherlock Holmes would have referred to it as the curious incident of the “dogs that didn’t bark.” As India celebrates its 65th Independence Day, the spectre of terror looms large over the nation. Cowardly terrorists keep on planting bombs in crowded places with an aim to cause maximum damage. The silver lining is that these murderers are still patriotic enough to call themselves the “Indian Mujahideen.” They could have named themselves more appropriately as “The Pakistan-funded-trained-and-brainwashed Indian Mujahideen.” Yes, the Indian flag will continue to flutter proudly in the sky even in the face of these terror threats. Unfortunately, terrorism, like corruption, has become a part of our routine lives. We need to root out terrorism of all hues including those of the Maoist variety. We need to tackle the root causes of terrorism but also ensure that persons indulging in acts of terror are dealt with severely. The anti-terror laws should be amended to dish out the strictest possible penalty to terrorists. We must ensure that future Independence days would be truly so as we live peacefully in a terror-free country. Let us take that pledge now to join the fight against terrorism & contribute in any way we possibly can. It is but a small price to pay for our Independence! Jai Hind!!! - Vivek Pereira

EVENTS

PARENTS NIGHT OUT

‘Lights, Cameras, Action … OLIO 2011’

S

P

arents do a lot for their kids, often sacrificing their own needs, just to accommodate those of their kids…the stars of their life! However, they too need their time to shine. They deserve a night out and thanks to the youth, that’s exactly what the parents of St.Andrew’s Parish got! The Andrean Youth Movement (AYM) organized a Parent’s Day Ball at Apostolic Carmel High School on the 31st of July, 2011. A special Mass was organized by the confirmation students & the AYM at St. Andrew’s Church followed by the function. From colourful drapes to an enchanted backdrop, the hall was elegantly decorated for this grand occasion. Parents too put on their best attire, all

geared up for a crazy night ahead. From word games to team challenges to the hockey pokey, the evening was filled with exciting events. Fr Michael Goveas & Fr Hillary Rodrigues graced the occasion with their presence. Fr. Vincent D’cruz led the youth & helped make this event a success. The sisters from Carmel Convent were fully pumped up & on the go-giving the parents a run for their money in the games as well as on the dance floor. The youth organized several games which brought out the competitive spirit in the parents. From human scrabble to word games, their minds were put to the test. However the fun didn’t stop there; as the parents

tried to show us how they busted a move in their days by dominating the dance floor. Their enthusiastic spirits were on a high the entire evening & that made it an enjoyable one. The great chemistry between the youth & the parents added sparks to the evening. DJ Paschal dished out the waltz music that had parents not wanting to leave the dance floor. The evening then ended with the Masala & a delectable dinner provided by Errol Caterers. It was a wonderful night which gave the youth & the parents a chance to bond on a different level. It was definitely a memorable evening which will stay in the hearts of all those who attented. - Risa Desa & Wynrica Gonsalves

Parents Day 2011 at Stanislaus For years together, a unique day in the St. Stanislaus calendar is “Parents Day”, a day where teachers organize a fun day for primary parents to make their day special. This year the parents of classes 1-4 participated in an exciting morning of telegames named MONSOON MASTI on July 23rd at the School grounds. The event was a great success with over 200 parents donning their team colours Britto – red, Xavier – blue, Kostka – green and Loyola – yellow. The parents participated in different games with child-like enthusiasm. The children eagerly cheered and motivated their parents. The day would be incomplete without our very own talented host, Darryl Loyola and his team of helpers. Though the Loyola house were declared the winning team, every participant returned home happy –each one a winner in his or her own right. - Tr Cersina Valles

t. Andrew’s College, Bandra is proud to present OLIO 2011, the Inter-collegiate Drama competition to be held on September, 7th & 10th at St Andrews Auditorium. The only English theatre competition of its kind, OLIO showcases 4 finalist plays of half hour each, selected after rounds of elimination. OLIO works with the aim of scouting fresh talent at the college level & thus gives aspiring actors & directors, a platform to perform on. Moreover, it encourages participants to write their own screenplays, thus giving aspiring writers a chance to showcase their talent. The finals see the best on stage, in an entertaining show interspersed with ‘fillers’ (which do get the audience cracking up!), trophies & prizes,(ranging from the Best Actor /Director/Scriptwriter to Sets/Lights & Sound) including fun prizes for the audience too. Frieda Pinto of St Xavier’s College won the ‘Best Actress’ trophy in 2004, apart from ‘Best Actors’ Anand Tiwari & Pierre Timmins who are now in Bollywood. Being judged by celebrities helps make this Competition an absolute crowd puller. Genelia D’Souza, Perizad Zorabian, Cyrus Broacha, Nikhil Chinappa, Dolly Thakore, Rael Padamsee, Sharon Prabakhar & Milind Soman among others have added a touch of glamour to the event. There’s a different theme to the show every year which has ranged from Mumbai Masala, Masquerade, Demons & Angels & Colors of Emotions. This year’s theme is “Laughter Is The Best Medicine”; we all know that comedy never fails to please! Over the past decade colleges from all over Mumbai have participated in OLIO. This year we have targeted 35 colleges. Among them are Wilsons, Hinduja, Ruaprel, M.M.K, Nationals, Xavier’s, NM, Don Boscos, HR, Mithibai, KC, Symbiosis & SIES. Last year Wilsons College were Winners of OLIO. They also bagged the award for Best Play, Best Director, Best lights & Sound, Best Scriptwriter & also Best Costumes. Xavier’s went on to win the award for Best Actor whereas Andrew’s won Best Actress & Best Actress Runners-up. In its 11th year OLIO is set to get even bigger & better. For starters, a second showing of the finals open to the general public has been planned. We do believe this is the ideal stage or talent at the college level to be recognized. St. Andrew’s very professional auditorium provides for just that. - Desiree Gonsalves

Jesuit Teacher’s Sammelan At Stanislaus

03

Doctors & Patients in Survival Test Hospitals demand Payment, Compromise Medical Services

E

J

uly 29 was a red letter day at Stanislaus High School. A Day of joy, of pride and of celebration. It was a teachers’ programme for all Jesuit city schools where 450 teachers from 8 different schools gathered with their respective principals. The prayer service conducted by Fr Andrew, SJ and team with a bhajan set the mood of the day. The anchor for the day was Tr. Margaret from Stanislaus who welcomed Fr. Francis Swamy, SJ to give the welcome speech. He, very rightly explained the purpose of this meeting. The teachers could refresh their memories as to what happened five years ago, when they met in St Mary’s. An audio-visual prepared by Fr Andrew on the life of St Ignatius of Loyola, had three lines challenging the teachers. First, “Are we going with the flow?” Second, “Are we going against the flow?” and third “Are we the flow?. These lines were indeed thought-provoking. The Speaker of the day, Fr Paul Coutinho, SJ spoke on the characteristics of Jesuit Education. He stressed that the goal of the Jesuit education is the pursuit of TRUTH, for the greater glory of God and for the SERVICE of humanity. He gave us many insights on Jesuit spirituality and how we must not make Jesus an obstacle; rather treat Jesus as a spring board. Service is a love relationship and companionship. Ignatian service is BEING MORE. Ignatian Excellence is just not being the best but giving of your BEST. Excellence is how we transform lives. Leadership is companionship, dialogue and collaboration. We must use our freedom

through the eyes of God. Lastly, Fr Paul spoke as to how we can transform our society – by welcoming other cultures, and adopting with each others’ culture. Fr Paul with his personal experiences, made the talk interesting. It was a good practical exercise for all to digest the Vision of Jesuit Education. Fr Errol, SJ, the Manager of St Stanislaus led the gathering to the Grace before meal, and then we broke for lunch which was sumptuous and delicious. Fr. Jude Fernandes , SJ, the Principal of St. Stanislaus introduced all the principals of 8 Jesuit schools to the gathering. The second half of the day was devoted for interaction through telly-games conducted by Darryl Loyola. The teachers were divided into groups. The competitions were Rangoli, collage, card making, flower arrangement and telly-games. The teachers were enthusiastic, interested and there was total involvement. After an hour the teachers assembled for the Prize Distribution. Everyone waited anxiously for the results. Teachers were happy to receive prizes and there was team spirit. A wonderful, fun filled evening came to an end with a vote of thanks from Tr Anna Correa. Teachers were given mementos and each of the teachers left on a note ….Till We Meet Again. Kudos to the teachers of Stanislaus who together with Fr Andrew, worked tirelessly for the success of this event –AND FOR THE GREATER GLORY OF GOD. - Bro Conrad SJ and Fr Andrew SJ

Community Composting

C

omposting is one of the best ways you can reduce the amount of waste you are responsible for. It is the most effective & efficient way of returning Carbon to the soil. When Composting is done at source the benefits are multiplied several times. In the past year a few households, societies & institutions in Bandra have not had the need to use the daily BMC garbage trucks that contribute to the many landfills around Mumbai. What started off as devising a simple low cost method for conveniently composting food waste for one family on an experimental basis, has now spread to 20 other locations with many more in active discussions. The Compost Tumbler has answers to problems faced by those who are already doing composting with varied levels of success; whether the stench, the rodents & cats, lack of space, no soil, meat & fish waste, etc. As it is closed it eliminates these factors as well as making it ideally weather-proof. Ventilation allows fresh air in & drainage ensures ridding of excess moisture. A weather resistant frame with pivots for tumbling the bin results in an ideal aerobic composting environment that can be maintained

for many years. All that it needs is our wet & dry organic waste put in, a couple of tumbles a day & about 15 to 20 days later, depending upon conducive conditions, the compost is ready. The Process is activated with micro organisms that multiply in an environment that is a correct balance of wet & dry bio-waste with oxygen. The micro organisms heat up the waste & kill all harmful bacteria. As you add more waste the micro organisms eat & multiply in proportion to the food available. Then, when the sources of food they thrive on no longer exist they disappear as fast as they appeared. Would you like to join us? We have solutions that make it easy. Compost tumblers for Societies are in two sizes. Crushers & Strainers, Compost Accelerators, Odor & Moisture Control Agents; are conveniently made available. We provide on site support, training & maintenance of your compost process. For more information logon to: www.helm.org.in. We will be glad to get you started & running for nature. Nature never produces waste. Mimic Nature … that's responsible progress. - Denzil Rego

arlier in the month of July, after a long and tiring day of routine work, I was called upon to visit a sick patient at a local hospital in Bandra. Almost three weeks later, I am still in a state of shock and appalled by the inhuman conditions I witnessed at this hospital. As the patient was lying in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), I took the lift up a couple of floors - and it was so filthy, I wondered how people came in and out of the hospital. When I reached the ICU, ready to enter the room, I was asked to leave my shoes at the door. I stepped onto the cold, greasy floor, with shock still written all over my face. The eighty-five year old patient was dying. As I looked around the room, I was never going to recover from my state of shock. Looking around in sheer bewilderment, I saw old medicine and unclean instruments just strewn around the table and on the floor and in a dirty pan too. The entire room was so filthy, it brought to mind the fact that Doctors and patients were in a Survival Test. It seemed that only a certain area was cleaned and for only having the patient being rolled-in to the ICU area. My first impressions were surely of not having anything of importance not worth writing home about at all. My thoughts were off and deep in thought with wondering whether these patients ever had their civic rights taken care of at any tine. Is this injustice meted out to all patients, visiting the hospital or as the saying goes, ‘you choose your hospital and the bed, so

jolly well lay in it’. Later, while enquiring from a worker at the hospital about the results of patients that were conducted by this hospital, I was brought down to earth with a bang! I saw the stark truth of how backward the testing methods were by this hospital, inspite of this being the days of the latest technology and medical equipment available to all hospitals. It amazed me, when the employee said, he received over five hundred samples for testing and that he could complete only two hundred of them, if he worked sincerely for his eight hours of daily duty. At most times I hold two sample bottles together and compare them, to decide which one is okay or it needs further testing. In most cases, they are termed “OK” and the others in doubt are promptly sent off to another hospital for further testing’. Another hospital, refused to send a patient into the ICU until a down payment was made to the hospital reception. When that was done, the receipt was sent with the patient in his bed to perform the necessary heart by-pass and the patient may have been saved by the bell! Hospitals demand payment, yet compromise on all medical services. My fellow brethren and Bandraites, I send out a desperate and urgent plea to all, to come forward to assist the cross-section of our society, in playing a crucial role in fighting for the civic rights of all patients, young and old. - Daniel Jeffrey

Apostolic Carmel High School Student wins Poster Competition

St. Andrews Zonals 2011

June 26th was celebrated as the 'Internaional D a y against D r u g Abuse & Illicit Trafficking'. Kripa Foundation, in association with the Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB),the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MSJE) conducted an awareness program & a 'poster competition' for students of classes 9 & 10 at St. Aloysius High School, Bandra. The theme of the program & competition was 'Think Health Not-Drugs'. The poster competition was judged on the creativity & the message from the poster. With over 150 participants the 3 best charts were awarded with certificates & a trophy. The 1st prize went to Ethel Misquitta from Apostolic Carmel High School. "We have been taught a lot about the bad effects of drugs on our body & life in school. Teens & youth are very prone to drug abuse. And once you are addicted to it is really difficult to turn back. I wanted to explain this to all those who are taking drugs. And what could be a better way other than a poster competition. When I heard about this I quickly got myself enrolled. Some of those thoughts on the poster are drugs. Be Smart, Don't start. Hugs not Drug. You don't Take Heroin to be a Hero.Shoot for the stars ,not your arms. Also the program held was really meaningful & beneficial for us. I’m happy that the overnight time spent to make the poster has born it's fruits." Ethel said.

T

he Cultural calendar of Bandra is just not complete without the St. Andrews Zonals. Many a giant in the music, theatre, entertainment & event management industry of our city owes the initial discovery of their talent to this platform. The year 2009 brought significant changes to the St. Andrew’s Zonals. The physical borders of the contest were redefined & now includes participation from all the other 6 parishes of the Bandra Deanery as well. Included in this open contest we now have the Parishes of St. Peter, St. Theresa, St. Anne, Mt. Carmel, St. Francis D’ Assisi & St. Vincent de Paul. Each Parish combines with a zone from St. Andrews, thus making it the ‘St. Andrews All Bandra Parish Talent Contest’. The theme chosen ‘Crossing Boundaries’ reflects the concept of moving forward with a wider participation & audience. Besides broadening the physical frontiers, we are in this - the 56th Presentation of the St. Andrews Zonals, as also the 3rd year of the St. Andrews All Bandra Parish Talent Contest’ now exploring talent through: 7th Aug ’11 Art (whereby we have introduced a poster contest from this year itself). 21st Aug ’11 - Music – Vocals & Instrumental – Below 16yrs; Choral Groups 28th Aug ’11 - Music – Vocals & Instrumental – Above 16yrs; Duets, Quartets & Dance – Duo & Groups 3rd & 4th Sept ’11 - Dramatics With a fierce yet healthy Inter Parish / Inter Zone competition involving hundreds of participants & witnessed by an audience of over three thousand people, the events are held at the St. Andrew’s Auditorium, over three weekends… thus producing the ultimate goal – an empowered involved & enlightened community. - Keith De Sales

Dear Readers,

EDIT PAGE concerning children, senior citizens, or just about anybody; are creating ripples. Today, it was someone else. Tomorrow, it could be you or me – landing in hospital or …. for no fault of ours. Many accidents happen when vehicles try to avoid potholes or an open drain in the middle of the road. Sometimes, uneven paver blocks are the cause of freak accidents. Well, how do we tackle this serious situation? We need action to change this scenario. The concerned authorities need to get their act together to control this reckless activity. Don’t you think that the road contractors are answerable? If you have any insights, please write to us, with solutions for a safer Bandra. Mid August will find us full of national fervor - with the ‘war against corruption’ coming as a ray of hope, towards creating a truly ‘Incredible India’. Your support is imperative to make this happen. Bandra’s got talent – with OLIO & Andrean Talent …already active. We hope to see a lot of budding local talent featured in our upcoming issues. Bandra boy Rahil Noorani has done it again – to make us all proud. Another Bandra boy Floyd Cardoz has won an international award for creating a humble Upma – a dish we all enjoy. If you know of any such outstanding person from Bandra (even ex-Bandra), do inform us. Bandra Buzz can be accessed on wordpress at www.bandrabuzz.wordpress.com You can forward this link to family & friends who may want to know what’s happening in Bandra. Soon, September will draw us towards Bandra Fair – when Bandra takes centrestage to Mumbai. You can give us feedback on your feelings about hosting this local fair – with all it’s implications. Till then, be alert and take care !

We start August on a friendly note – with Friendship Day creating cordial conditions among family & friends. Every friend represents a world within us. A world that may not have been possible until they arrive. It is only when we meet them that this new world is made possible. Truly, friendship is the glue that keeps us & the world around us together – helping to spice up our lives. It’s what makes each one of us unique. Mumbai monsoons have set in very well, with wet spells almost daily. This is the ideal weather for Bandra’s ‘Football Fever’ that is witnessed by hundreds of cheering spectators at the Supari Talao Grounds every Sunday. Excitement is rising, as teams are trying their best to reach the finals. Meanwhile, Bandra’s Road Rage is worsening day by day. Teenagers(many of whom are either drunk or drugged), without a driving license(but having admiring girls loaded in their backseat) are speeding in hi-end cars across our suburban roads, as if they were race tracks. These are spoiled kids of rich ‘connected’ parents – who are too busy to even know what their child is doing... until Warm Regards, they are forced to ‘rescue’ them from the Merck D’Silva local police station – with a hefty bribe. In EDITOR the bargain, serious accidents of hit & run,

Ashish Shelar's interview

is available at

I am very much impressed by the Municipal Councilor's interview in the July 2011 issue of Bandra Buzz. The issues discussed by him, such as illegal hawking, rampant curruption in Government Offices, illegal encroachments, anti-social activities like chain snatchingand Prostitution, matters concerning Senior Citizens, Children & women etc. shows that he is serious about solving such problems that Bandraites are facing. In the future only such individuals should be elected as MPs & MLAs. As Bandra is growing rapidly, roads are becoming narrower and narrower because of illegal encroachments. It is very difficult to walk on Waroda Road, because of heavy vehicular traffic. Children and old people are at the mercy of autorickshaws. As vehicles on the road go on increasing, Bandra roads will soon be a nightmare for pedestrians. I wonder why vehicles are allowed to be parked on either side of narrow roads like Waroda Road. I thank Mr. Ashish Shelar for his citizenfriendly views of Bandra residents and wish him resounding victory in the forthcoming Municipal Elections. - U. D' Almeida Truly like your paper, as it covers quintessential Bandra going-ons. - Ayesha D'souza

Floyd Cardoz makes waves with simple Upma dish to win Top Chefs Master Season 3

B

elieve It or Not - your simple dish of Upma which cost around Rs 30/- approx. has taken the world by storm. Yes, it’s hard to believe, but is creating waves across the world. Recently was our very own Bandra Boy, Floyd Cardoz who bagged the top honour at the Top Chefs Master Season 3 in the US which won him US $ 100,000 (approx. Rs 46 lakh.) He beat other top celebrity Chefs like finalist Mary Sue Milliken of LA’s Border Grill and Traci Des Jardins of San Franciso’s Jardiniere in the final round which was televised live across American cable TV audiences. He divided the judges with his inclusion of the popular Indian breakfast dish Upma in his meal, but "in the end, he impressed because of the spice and passion that he infused in his final meal of the season," said The Wall Street Journal. "The three-course feast also featured a rice-crusted snapper in a fennel-laced broth and a re-interpreted version of a Malaysian beef stew. Our guess is that Cardoz won by doing exactly what he does at Tabla - that is, honouring his Indian gastronomic roots and finding a way to re-invent his native cuisine at the same time," it said. By winning, Cardoz joins the ranks of better-known chefs Rick Bayless, of Frontera Grill in Chicago, Marcus Samuelsson of Red Rooster and formerly Aquavit, both in New York, who won the second and third season respectively - the Huffington Post reported. With a big heart, he is donating his winnings to the Young Scientists Cancer Research Fund at New York's Mount Sinai

School of Medicine, in memory of his father, who died of cancer. Top Chef Masters is a spin - off of the Emmy Award-winning Top Chief - the one which Indian audience’s got to see the Australian version of the same on Star World. The Season 3 episodes will be aired shortly. We also have Master Chef India Show with actor Akshay Kumar hosting the show on Star Plus. He has been creating waves much earlier in the US, having worked with the owner of Tabla restaurant hospitality entrepreneur Danny Meyer - the restaurant located at the famous New York landmark, Madison Square Park. He even wrote a cook book to his credit entitled “One Spice Two Spice” and launched a line of meals for online grocer Fresh Direct. Having studied from St. Andrew’s School & St. Xavier, he went on to do his hotel management from the famous hotel management school IHM, located at Dadar. However he was trained to become a bio-chemist, but things changed for the better and he found himself serving up the best dishes for his clientele. He has now big plans to open yet another new restaurant called North End Grill - a seafood restaurant at Manhattan’s Batter Park City with Danny Meyer. He is the brother of Mumbai’s famous singer Kim Cardoz. Bandra Buzz congratulates and wishes him all the best in his new venture - and for making the simple Upma dish a worldwide favourite for us to dig in. - David Vaz

Rain Or Storm Bandra’s Braveheart Footballers Fight It Out Celtic Carol Allen, Bandra Packers, Millwall F.C. and Chimbai S.C. are all set to make the quaterfinals play offs on the 8th August. Bandra West Football League being conducted for Bandra West residents only on the Dr. Norman Lewis Supari Talao Municipal grounds have remained unbeaten in all their fixtures to date. The tournament is being co-sponsored by local MLA Baba Siddique & other wellwishers. The tournament is being played every Sunday from 7.30 a.m. onwards. The downpours have been so heavy and prolonged at times that the chances of abandonment loom large but the referees have shown enough pragmatism to let the game go on much to the delight of the large crowds. Should everything go on as per scheduled one is sure to see exciting finals on September 4th. - Hugh Fernandes

Opening Our Ears to the Cry of the Poor ... D

uring this Holy month of Ramadan we ponder on this larger than life signboard that looms over our horizons & as we all know, the writing is on the wall. "The poor you will always have with you". "I drew one simple truth from it: If you are going to love God (or Allah), you have to love poor people".Aiding the impoverished, sick & disabled is as essential to our everyday life as is preaching & tending to spiritual needs. Our mission, "to preach the good news to the poor ... proclaim freedom for the prisoners & recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed". Many passages show prophets teaching directly to the poor or declaring the need to assist them. In the early centuries, Hebrew & Greek words for "poor" & "needy" appeared over & over again, reflecting overwhelming concern for the disadvantaged. Somehow, this emphasis seems largely lost among today's churches & mosques. It is too rare, they say, that sermons address the community's responsibility to the poor. And when such messages are presented, they are often labeled "social gospel" or "liberal".A friend of mine, in his college days specialized in the economics of the poor, earning a Ph.D. with a focus on Third World development. He gained a professorship in economics at the University, but became frustrated to find that spiritual & worldview issues were excluded from every discussion. The problems of the poor were viewed solely as a result of economic forces. "He was convinced that spirituality & worldview issues were an important ingredient. It's certainly part of the story of poverty in

India under Hinduism". At the same time, he also struggled with attitudes toward the poor, as people didn't seem to care about the poor very much & there seemed to be a lack of mercy". While his university colleagues saw poverty as solely the result of economic forces, people in his community had reduced it to purely spiritual consequences, ignoring the impact of social injustice. Then, while teaching a class on the doctrines of faith, he came to grips with himself & a call to train leaders to "facilitate economic development & spiritual transformation in poor countries". However, the key is to foster development, helping the poor become self-sufficient through their own work, rather than relief, responding to the needs of people in crisis. "We're not insensitive to the fact that people have immediate needs, but a good principle is never to do something for somebody that they can do for themselves. Providing relief when development is needed is like a physician making a wrong diagnosis. Giving the wrong medication will not heal you, but it could actually hurt you". "He who despises his neighbour sins, but blessed is he who is kind to the needy". We should constantly try to make the correct diagnosis. This societal cross-section vision is "to establish a cross-cultural worshiping community, centered on the truth, producing discipled believers who become instruments of grace, justice, & mercy." There's the old adage that if you give a person a fish, you feed him for a day - If you teach him to fish, you feed him for a lifetime. Development work with the poor, accordingly, takes it one

step further. "You want a man to own the pond, so he can feed himself & others. We don't do soup kitchens. We don't want to be feeding the same people ten years from now". We wholeheartedly agree, with whom so ever explains his role as discipling his members so they will learn to "give their lives away & care for somebody nobody else cares about". "If you don't see the justification (for helping the poor)", one asserts. "You are not reading the good words. It's a theme throughout God (or Allah) is on the side of the poor, broken-hearted, widows & orphans & of course, the downtrodden. Mercy is at the heart of the community. But the problem is, when you really start to apply it, it's going to change your life. Some people aren't ready or comfortable with changes that result from teaching people in need." This is what the good words says: 'Administer true justice; show mercy & compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. Many teaching their faith frequently talk of "using our advantage for the advantage of the disadvantaged". Mercy initiatives range from counselling & assistance to women at crisis pregnancy centers, home repair, temporary housing, assistance with food & utilities or even help women out of the sex trade."The biblical model, to love our neighbour as ourselves, is not just about going to evangelize". "If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out & not be answered"."I know that the Lord (or Allah) secures justice for the poor & upholds the cause of the needy". "... & if you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry & satisfy the needs of the

oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness.Today, despite the array of books, workshops, & conferences designed to help followers of our faith "deepen their walk", the community's impact on our nation's spiritual & moral fiber seems in decline. Could it be that while using our spiritual sponges to absorb biblical truth & attain doctrinal purity, we have failed to squeeze them out in showing mercy? We know that our God (or Allah) expects us to take steps in caring for others, to take our love & caring to another level. Today, we who believe in the power of His words to change lives, will focus our attention on what our doctrines have to teach us about loving others & that we cannot love our God (or Allah) if we do not love other people around us. As we value the practical application of the good word "to make a difference in who we are & what we do", let us shine our light so that others may see our good works.Perhaps we should meditate on that... while we digest our iftar & sohour tonight. Wishing our Muslim brothers & sisters a Holy & Prayerful month of Ramadan. - Julian D'Mello
