DO WE NEED THE COASTAL ROAD? A Tragedy or Comedy? Seven Percent Solution? Western Waterfront Fast Lane? Mumbai’s worst nightmare is in the process of becoming a reality. We first heard about a Coastal Road to be built on the Western water front of Mumbai when the Ex-CM Mr. Prithviraj Chavan proposed it. We then didn’t take it too seriously, as elections were around the corner & we expected a change in govt. The change happened, many voted for it, BUT - nothing changed. For CM Devendra Fadnavis, the road, if implemented in his tenure, could well prove to be his political legacy. Now, it is no more just a proposal, it has been passed. This has raised many objections from environmentalists who know the damage it will do. The people in Bandra will probably suffer the most. We have spent time, money & energy to create the Carter & Bandstand Promenades; which have even received international environmental awards. The Coastal Road will ruin it.
CONSEQUENCES: Is this going to be a tragedy or comedy? The reclaiming of land to create a road with six lanes (two supposedly for buses) will kill our mangroves (the rarest species at Carter Road) leading to floods. Children who love to walk and jump on the rocks will never know this joy. The Bandra Fort, a heritage site, will lose its beauty and grandeur. And what about the fisher folk of Chimbai and Danda? The oldest residents of Bandra are the East Indians & the Kolis - their occupation, will be gone forever. Scarcity of fish will increase the price. Maybe this government wants us all to become vegetarians! Crores of rupees from tax payer’s money is going to be wasted, only for the benefit of elite car owners - just a seven percent solution. Mayor inaugurates Dr. Khalap's Dental Clinic
NEWS
When Mayor of Mumbai, Honorable Mrs. Snehal Ambekar cut the ribbon on 19th July; a new international-standard dental clinic was launched in Bandra West, near Lilavati Hospital. We were amazed at the latest technology in the 1200 sq. ft. of posh interiors, that will create the correct ambience & provide world class facilities for dental patients. This started a new branch of Rajaram Dental Clinic. To get a better insight about her new clinic, we put some queries across to Dr. (Mrs.) Suvarna Khalap BDS (Mumbai). What made you go into expansion mode? Since both my children willingly took up this profession, I needed to expand. My son, Dr. Suraj Khalap has done specialization in Implant and Full Mouth Rehabilitation and daughter will be soon completing her Masters in Root Canal. With my 35 years experience & their advanced knowledge, the most logical thing to do was to expand. We got the latest equipment from France & Germany. I would like to tell Bandra Buzz readers that our latest model X-Ray machine from Korea does not emit any harmful rays. Our dental chairs from France are very comfortable. All this is very patient-friendly.

Any special offers? At our newly opened Rajaram Dental Clinic, we offer free consultation to all our patients and no x-ray charges, for the first two months. What was the Mayor’s reaction? Well, she was amazed to see such a dental clinic in Bandra – and told us that she felt as if she was in a foreign land. RAJARAM DENTAL CLINIC 1st Floor, Sun-Beam CHS, Opp Mt. safety and hygiene. 'Fresh and safe non-veg. foods home-delivered on time' being the motto, their call center takes the orders, and caters to the specific queries of the customer. Even their website www.seafoodandmeat.co.in is user friendly and even includes recipes for those interested. At the moment, The Seafood & Meat Co. deliver 250+ non-veg. products to 18 pin codes within the Mumbai -South and Suburban region. Plans for the future include investing most of their time and money in superior technology, supply chain and team to cater to more consumption points in the city and outside. Additionally, they plan to widen their offering by launching private labels in-house, promoting other brands of new and unique non-vegetarian products and diversifying into ancillary product categories such as convenience foods etc. So one could expect to see a lot more of 'The Seafood & Meat. Co' at our homes in the near future.
Ordering your food home is a trend fast picking up and 'The Seafood & Meat Co.', has been making waves and getting a lot of people changing from the conventional local fishmonger / butcher to ordering onine or over the phone and getting their order home delivered. The company was pioneered by Vyal Adhye. His family has many years of experience and knowledge in food retail and logistics industry and Vyal himself has worked with a private investment firm that dealt with food logistics and supply chain for many years too. Since its launch in October 2014 the companys focus has been to build a safe and healthy environment for non-vegetar-
ian items as these products are highly perishable. For the same they have built a fulfillment centre at Worli, that compromises of the required cold chain infrastructure and a kitchen room for cleaning and cutting non-veg. foods. From this central location in Mumbai they now deliver 15-20 orders a day, to their growing customer base of 700+ customers in locations from Juhu to Colaba. According to Vyal Adhye, the environment in which a food is stored and travels is a critical aspect in food deliveries and quality. So their involvment and expertise lies at all the stages of the product-sourcing, storing, handling and delivery. They
use high quality food grade vacuum bags for their seafood and meat items, and deliver their products in an insulated box filled with durable ice packs. Vacuum packaging helps as there cannot be any bacterial growth in a product that is vacuum packaged, thus preventing food spoilage. This ensures that the nutrition content, texture and flavor of the product is maintained from the source point to the consumption point. The Seafood & Meat Co. sources fresh seafood and meat products on a daily basis either on their own or from well trained butchers who understand contemporary cuts of meat and adhere to standards of

LETTERS TO EDITOR CLEARING THE AIR The Managing Committee of Salsette Society expelled me on 30.03.2014. The same was put up before Dy. Registrar CHS. I am pleased to inform everyone that by an order dated 23.07.2015, in a 11 page order; has struck down the expulsion in very strongly worded terms. Also, I would like to let your readers know that I have also some papers (70 pages) about the Salsette Awards from the concerned department; which I got through RTI. As it is all in Marathi, it will take some time to understand same. Leslie Almeida There are orders in the BMC Grievance Redressal Committee Hearings passed by Dy. Municipal Commissioner (Zone III) & Chairman GRC, against Leslie Almeida & John Pereira, the self proclaimed crusaders against illegal structures in Bandra. Kindly publish an article with regard to the illegal constructions at Casa Almeida, Bandra (W). Dr Selwyn Almeida RESERVATION COUNTER AT BANDRA RAILWAY STATION I would like to bring to your attention, that there is a need for a Railway Reservation Counter at Bandra Railway Station, Western Railway. As a resident of Bandra West, I would like to bring to your notice, serious issues faced by local residents to get a reservation ticket: 1) DISTANCE - Bandra West residents have to go all the way to Bandra Terminus, Bandra East, which is actually close to Khareast Railway Station - around 1km from Bandra Railway Station. 2) NO ACCESS BY RAIL - Bandra Terminus Bandra East does not have access by railway from Bandra Railway Station. So, Bandra West residents have to travel by road till Ban-
dra Terminus or have to cross the railway overhead bridge of Bandra Station and take public transport till Bandra Terminus Bandra East.
Independent or Intolerant India? Dear Reader, August in Bandra this year is set to see the start of a lot of changes ‘in-the-making’. Bandra’s coveted coastline will soon be a thing of the past. The increasing throng of people we see at the three promenades seem to say, “Let’s enjoy the view and fresh air, while the coast is still clear.” The soothing sporadic rain and sudden sunshine, just adds to the hide-n-seek fun. Shoppers at Hill Road & Linking Road (and all those lovely lanes in between) love these interludes to enable them get what they need to buy. Soon, national fervour will come to a crescendo on our 69th Independence Day. Yet, the powers-that-be are twisting the truth to suit them. Yes, the banning spree is getting to our nerves. Yesterday it was that, that & that. Today it is this. What can we expect tomorrow? And, in the din of protests, vital issues that matter to the progress of our country are conveniently ignored. Mainstream media is being subtly controlled, to block out unwanted opposition. As we unfurl the national flag with patriotism, deep inside is that emptiness, silently saying, “Are we living in an independent or intolerant India? This is the start of the festive season.

PROTESTING PRO-ACTIVE GROUPS: This issue is vital to the future of our suburbs – and there are mixed reactions; many of them, from misinformed citizens. On 19th July, 6pm onwards; the Bandra (West) Residents Association held a protest meeting at Carter Promenade. To view this, please visit: bandrabuzz.com/coastal-road.html. Further protest against this project worth around 15,000 Crores are in the pipeline. The Bandra West Residents Association (BWRA), Bandra Bandstand Residents Trust (BBRT) and AGNI Joint Area Action Group (JAAG) are having a programme on the 15th of August, (Independence Day). It will begin with a flag hoisting followed by a human chain holding up banners which will express our thoughts. Time: 10:30 am Venue: Carter Road Promenade, opposite the ACP’s office and Bandstand Promenade, at the Central Park. This will happen simultaneously at both venues.
and the Municipal administration of Mumbai have just approved the coastal road along the city’s western front and the general response has been one of euphoria. Politicians across party lines are congratulating themselves and there’s elation in many sections of the public at the thought of swifter travel (80 kilometres per hour, as per official accounts) in a city plagued by peak-hour traffic congestion. This could be the fastest lane on our city’s western waterfront. Jayesh Karmani supports the Coastal Road, saying, “Yes, Mumbai needs additions to its transport infrastructure, if we want world class mobility.” Another staunch supporter Piyush Shah told us, “No progress will ever take place if we don’t allow such projects.” A Coastal Road Protester - Kavita Khan, says, “The politicians in Mumbai who have been so excited about the coastal road, need to be as excited about modernising the processes at regional transport offices; including the driving license tests. They need to restore the struggling, neglected public bus and train services. They should feel passionately about making it the best in the subcontinent. Where is that enthusiasm? Why does the enthusiasm for the coastal road far exceed the enthusiasm for Mumbai’s other transport and traffic planning needs?” Finally, the question is: Do we really need the coastal road? We need to answer this truthfully. Gauri Laheji

3) INCONVENIENCE - Bandra West residents, mostly Senior Citizens, Ladies & The Common Man face difficulties in reaching Bandra Terminus Bandra East which is around 1Km. from Bandra Railway Station. 4) NEGLECTED - Railway stations like C.S.T., Mumbai Central, Dadar, Wadala, Andheri, Borivali and Virar have Reservaton Counters at the station itself. Then why is the Bandra Station - "THE QUEEN OF SUBURBS", left out for the Reservation Facility? If reservation counters are made available at Bandra station, it will save time and money of all Bandra West residents, mostly senior citizens, ladies and the general public. This matter should be highlighted to our elected representatives and the railway authorities, so that practical steps can be taken. Irfan Shaikh, Social Activist DEFYING AMC DEMOLITION ORDERS Despite written orders from the Assistant Municipal Commissioner to demolish an illegal structure at Kadeshwari, the Assist Engineer Mr. Dhuradkar refuses to take action to demolish it. How can an Assistant Municipal Commissioner (AMC) act helpless to his junior? Is it a farce? Is there an under hand dealing with the illegal structure holders? I request that Bandra Buzz take up this issue. It’s a question of the legal rights of our East Indian people - the original son's of this soil. It’s high time corrupt officers be suspended rather than transferred. There is no deterrent punishment initiated within the department, so the corrupt officers have turned shameless and do not obey their seniors. Adv. Shane Cardoz

FITNESS
06 "The Fitness Initiative is called 'Get fit Mumbai’. It’s for Everybody!" Bandra Buzz caught up with Dino Morea over the week on a Wednesday afternoon to talk about DM Fitness, the Initiative, the Fitness Workout Stations around Mumbai and the Dream.
The Fitness stations launched recently have created quite a storm & the public seems to love them. Could you please tell us 'Why?' How did you come up with the idea of DM Fitness, the concept? Well I went for a run one day on Carter Road and realized that besides walking and jogging, there's nothing else one can do, hence while running I thought "Hey if there was something really cool over here for me to do, maybe even just like a set of parallel bars, or pull ups or push-ups in a clean space, it would be a great functional training for me you know, it's a whole functional routine." So that’s when the idea came about, also having travelled abroad you see so many fitness enthusiasts and so many facilities for them to use on the streets, so I said "Why does our city not have anything like this?". We have no fields to play and we have no facilities, the only thing is these expensive gyms which not many people can afford, so that’s when the idea came about, I said "Ok, lets create this, let’s go ahead , let’s do this", and I went to Aditya Thackeray for it, he was the only guy that actually supported me and he had a vision and said “You know what Dino, this is a great Idea, I know what the youth want, and health and fitness is the need of the hour, let’s do it.” So he went about getting permissions and we have so far set up 15 stations all over the city, we need to do a 150 in total, and we can do without opposition on this project, the fitness initiative is called 'Get fit Mumbai', it's for Everybody. So when we get stalled it gets a bit disheartening. How did you go about making a dream concept a reality, and a good one, the execution of the dream? And while at it between Aditya Thackeray and you, you certainly got the attention of the youth, and many off the sofa and more conscious about fitness. We all have ideas and we all have dreams, but if e are going to sleep and not realize those dreams, there's no point having those dreams, I am an ambitious person and if I think of something I really want to get it done and I go about getting it done, I do
know that because of the fact that me being an actor it opens a lot of doors, but at least I use that in my capacity to open those doors and make things happen, and yes coming back to Aditya, he's been a wonderful help, a great support and this whole initiative is being done by me and him. So we are doing 'Get fit Mumbai', next is going to be 'Get fit Maharashtra' and then 'Get fit Gujarat', Get fit Kashmir', and we are going to create competitions after that, 'Get fit Maharashtra' versus ' Get fit Gujarat' kind of competitions, like what Crossfit has, but we are now going to do it now in Indian style, yeah big dreams, we have to make them all come true and we cannot have potholes in the road stopping us from doing this, instead we need the support of the people, the initiative is for everyone. You have always been one for fitness and to make others aware of the benefits of staying fit, how come Free, how come Free outdoor gyms when others are out there, franchising and capitalizing? Well, the fact is that this is something I would use, when I go for a run I want to be able to use it and it takes nothing, If I get my permissions I go to corporates who have money and say "Hey guys this is all it costs, do it out of your CSR which is Corporate Social Responsibility or even out of marketing, I'll give you a little sponsor saying 'Sponsored by 'So and so'.” But at least we are doing good for the city, it doesn’t take much, it's not rocket science, it's just great because everybody gets to use it and its free for the young kids, when I drive about today and I see young kids coming

and stopping me and even police officers coming and saying "Hey thank you so much for the fitness stations, we use it.", it feels great, it just feels so good. So not everything is about money, yes a lot is about money, but not everything is, in this particular situation, no. So hence because it's not about money can we please have less misunderstandings of the nature on the part of some people and more support for the initiative instead. Ok, I stand corrected, earlier checking your Facebook page 'DM Fitness', I followed it till workout station number 12, it's now at 15, and you already told us about your future plans, any immediate ones for the city of Mumbai and Bandra? Well in Bandra I set it up on Bandstand, but unfortunately when I came to Carter Road I had to do it in consultation with an NGO over there, and it's really sad because after struggling to get government permissions, the NGO says "Hey, you can do it but you have to give us a donation.", now it's really tough to raise money to set it up firstly, now I have to raise donation money to pay them, it's really unfortunate that NGO's come out and raise these objections. So you know we have all sorts of obstacles, but this initiative is super, people love it, & I will persevere. Abhishek Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Bipasha Basu, it's nice to see your friends from Bollywood coming out and promoting this initiative of 'Free for All' DM Fitness Stations, tell us a little about that.

Yeah, well the idea to bring out celebrities to launch fitness stations is very simple, we want to attract people, we want people to be fitness aware, but creating facilities is not good enough, we got to shout from the roof tops saying "Hey we set this up, go use it." and who better than celebrities from Bollywood because it gets SEEN everywhere, it gets printed everywhere, and my friends are great, they are all fitness enthusiasts in their own little way, and they all want to promote a good initiative, so you give them something good they will actually come out of their way and promote it, 'DM Fitness' is Basic Grass Root Fitness, it's functional training, it's interval training, you need to start here for any kid to actually become an athlete or anything. This is grass root, they need to be aware of fitness, and the only way to be aware is to give them facilities and that’s what we are doing. And a last question, catch in 15 years from now where would DM Fitness be, the Dream, if the cards played perfectly as planned? Well my dream is to obviously see a lot of fitness stations set up across not only Mumbai, but the rest of India. Like I said earlier this is just the beginning of a fitness movement, and hopefully 15 years or 20 years from now you see athletes or sports people representing India, hopefully saying that they began fitness at one of our fitness stations. That would be a very proud moment. So let's get everybody fit and I urge NGOs, people, & government s to please come out and help us make this a great fitness movement. Wayne Lemos

Kadhali today enjoys a decent circulation around Mumbai and a customer base reaching as far as Delhi and down South too. 'Kadhali' even won the award for 'Best Taste in Town' from renowned food critic Karen Anand at Farmers Market event held at Palladium, Lower Parel. A visit to her website www.mystiqueconfections.com/kadhali will bring you up to speed on a little about them, the benefits of eating banana flour, the process of making it, and a lot more, including an entire product list that one can scroll through. You can also visit their Facebook page www.facebook.com/MystiqueChocolatesAndMore where recently they had a 'Banaddictions' contest where contestants had to write in not more than 400 words on what hunger does to their creative soul and how they get over it. Well with the festive season around the corner they will also be introducing a new Ladoo, called the 'Ladio', this banana flour

And if she had it her way, most of Bandra, Mumbai and even India would be living much healthier lives by eating more foods with Gluten Free Raw Banana Flour. 'Kadhali' meaning banana in Sanskrit is the brain child product of Namrata Shastri, a gluten free flour, it is made from raw banana is 100% natural and has no preservatives and no chemicals. It was in December 2014 that Namrata first introduced 'Kadhali' into the market, she had noticed a lot of people becoming more health conscious, and as a food producer she wanted to give her customers something healthier than what was available in the market at that time in that bracket of food, and so started looking for options, the best as she found out, was Banana Flour, after a lot of time spent in research she finally had the solution which she named 'Kadhali'. On the packaging she has included recipes, so that customers would have a guide to follow. Nutritional values were printed on the packaging.

Remember in the older movies whenever a child was caught misbehaving, the prosecutor would question the child with a stern and disappointed undertone, “Is this what your parents teach you at home?. It is true that a child is influenced the most by what he learns and witnesses at home, the child picks up behavioral traits and forms their persona based on these experiences. It is also true that the family structure has undergone a huge transformation; both the parents are busy with work commitments to ensure a bright future for their children. Grandparents are quite independent and globetrotting, busy ticking of things to do of their bucket list. Such circumstances culminate with the child spending a considerable amount of time with the care taker. One of the fundamentals of marketing state that a need cannot be created, it must exist. Thereafter a person with observation skills and a vision can cater to that need. Debolina Dutta, Founder and CEO of Manners n Beyond noticed that due to the lack of interaction & influence of the parents, the child seems to be aloof. This impacts their emotional as well as their intelligence quotient. The team at Manners n Beyond believe that if a child is guided and influenced in the right manner they will be equipped to express emotions such as love, respect, friendship, empathy, honesty, sincerity. However they must first understand the reasons why
they are told to behave in a certain way. With the aid of international curriculum and methodologies tweaked to suit our Indian culture and value system, Manners n Beyond ensures that the child behaves and emotes in a healthy manner. The modules are formed keeping in mind the child’s age and the concepts that they can relate with, for example the Young Diplomats Program for children between the age of 3-6 focuses on developing social and emotional skills through manners, etiquette, life skills, values, morals, drama, public speaking and field trips. The Little Ambassadors Program for children between the age of 7 – 11 emphasize on confidence, etiquette building and communication skills ensuring the child can speak confidently and courteously in public and home. However our Mommy n Me manners program for children between the age of 2- 2.11 years takes the cake. Manners N Beyond have 12 centers at the moment and is associated with Oberoi International school, JBCN International School, Jamnabai Narsee School, Kangaroo Kids - Pali Hill, Serra International School - Colaba and many more. Every year, St. Andrew's College hosts OLIO, the Inter-Collegiate Drama Competition. It is the only English theatre festival of its kind in Mumbai. It consists of one– Act plays from various colleges, selected after preliminary eliminations. It has proven to be the perfect platform for young students to showcase their talent and move to a greater arena, be it theatrical or even event–management. A prerequisite for entry is an original script following a given theme. While OLIO 2010 saw the audience engaged in plays with a social message, OLIO 2011 was all about Comedy and OLIO 2012's theme read “Twisted Tales”, a selected fairy tale with an unusual perspective and an unexpected ending. OLIO 2013’s theme was a “Royal Affair” and OLIO 2014 saw the actors on stage making a “Comedy of Errors”. The Theme for OLIO 2015 is “Unravelling Mysteries”, be a part of it to see how it all unfolds! Performing on the Andrew's Auditorium stage with its fabulous acoustics and lighting is an exhilarating experience in itself; or that's what the young and fresh per-

formers always say. If you are a budding script writer, a techie adept with stage lights and sound, an exacting director or an actor from any college, who loves to play to the galley, here's your chance! Great sponsors help with encouraging talent with prizes in store for everything. The prizes range from the Best play and Runners up, to Best Director, Actors, Set Design and Lighting and one for the entertaining spontaneous ‘Fillers’ and tonnes of spot sprizes. CAMPUS
New year, new campus and a whole new life begins with a little bit of apprehension and a little bit of relish for 400+ students. While some take to it like fish to water, some splutter about. And for both these factions, AVALANCHE 2015 which is to be held on the 18th of August is the perfect icebreaker, and trust the Students' Council of TSEC, things only get better from here. AVALANCHE has been successfully organised for the past 12 years and is infamous for its ability to set standards high and keep the students waiting impatiently for the Council's next BIG festival, TRIFLES. Vivacious energy, loads of fun and tons of entertainment. One can expect nothing less from any time spent with The Other People, one of India’s premier pop and retro cover bands. Be it at their gigs or ensconced with Gavin Cason (lead guitar/vocals), Samuel Berlie (rhythm guitar/vocals), Loy Henriques (bass guitar /vocals), Atish Thomas (drums & percussion), Garth D'Mello (keyboard/vocals) and Zarir Warden (vocals) for a cozy chat. “Our journey has been adventurous. There’s so much that has happened in 11 years. But it still feels like yesterday,” believe the band members. What started of with Zarir and Samuel back in 2004, has sustained and grown into something bigger than each individual. It’s been fun, hard, and good and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon, agree each of them. “The hard work that we have put in has sincerely helped. It’s not been a stroll in the park. Being a cover band and that to an English one, and to reach this level of recognition, we must be doing something right.”
LIVING IT LIVE
MUSIC

Group dynamism Having played on stages across India and even a few internationally, their dynamics as a group is a unique one. “Our roles are defined. Gavin and Loy will push for rehearsals and see that things happen. Sam’s duty is to see that the fans stay happy. Zarir is the driving force behind it all. Each member pitches in for song choices as well as other nitty-gritties. So in that way, everyone is an integral part and has a key role in the band. That works as an advantage for us.” If you’ve ever been for even one of their performances, one of the things you notice is how coordinated they are with with each other on stage. There is an understanding, a look or a glance or touch. You realize that this kind of group dynamics comes from a very evolved perspective. ‘Take that shirt off!’ “We are truly victims of our own popularity,” says the band, laughing their heads off. From a strong female fan base that comes just to make googly eyes at Samuel
and Zarir, to women who admire Loy for his hair, to those who come specifically for the music and the energy they bring to each song they perform, the band understands that their audiences turn up for something specific more often than not. It could be a particular song like 500 Miles or You’re the Voice or even What Makes You Beautiful, or a particular performance of a song, like the dance on Footloose. “So we can’t always experiment too much out of that zone. We try new songs. But if it doesn’t work once, then we move on. It’s time wasted in rehearsals but it’s time well wasted. For us, it’s an experience that shapes us and takes us forward.” They are a band that loves to have fun on stage and gets a lot of crowd response. From women screaming for them to take their shirts off to people wanting to take them home! “We think a lot of people come with the idea of seeing a good live entertainment band. It’s not fun when the person entertaining you is not having fun. You have to be happy in order to make your audiences feel happy. There’s a lot of energy we send out and receive. It’s only right that we respond to people who interact with us from the crowd. People come back every time to hear us, the least we can do is reach out to them in return.” Staying relevant
SAUCY, CHEESY, DELECTABLE
Times, they are a-changing. For The Other People, that is something to revel in, especially as their fan base expands. “Our music has changed over time in terms of the songs we sing over various gigs and venues. We do this intentionally because the crowd is getting younger. You’re only as good as your last gig. The moment you forget that, you stop being relevant.” They too get butterflies before a performance, due to the expectations from the various crowds they perform for. “It’s what makes us better musicians,” they point out. “You are better prepared for any contingency.” 11th Birthday Celebrations An 11-year journey is by no means a short or easy one. The backend work is tremendous for any band. “Everyone has to be on the same page. For us, diverse roots make for better music, better performances and better things. The good thing about us is that it’s in this diversity that we sit and ideate.” So how did they celebrate their 11th birthday? “We played at Nostalgia, a retro music property at Kipos in Bandra. This for us was really special, specifically because we have so much of a home ground advantage. A lot of our fans are from Bandra, as are most of us. It was an electric night.” #Dreamers#Believers#Lovers With their debut album #Dreamers#Believ-
ers#Lovers about to release on August 21, The Other People get ready to showcase both sides of their musical prowess. “We’ve got this image of being the most popular cover band. Now, there’s an original side to us, which we are debuting with our album. So we have two stars on our epaulets so to speak. There’s this new sound coupled with new original tracks with T.O.P. on the one hand and on the other hand you have this image of a cover band.” The album means different things to each of the members. What really stirs a chord for them is in the title itself. They are dreamers, believers and lovers themselves. The album is a culmination of everything they have been through together to get here. The road they have travelled, how they have stayed relevant and sustained themselves in an industry, where fan tastes can be fickle. “It’s a new chapter for us, one that will eventually be perhaps a bestseller. When you travel the roads we have to get to where we are, you get to be very disciplined about yourself and your music, and on the whole as a person and a band. That discipline has gone into and come out of the album.” A-ha moment! With a little over a decade of entertaining people under their belt, they have plenty of memories that tide them through the times. But on being pushed, they narrated one. “It had been a pretty good night and an amazing gig. A PYT in an LDB comes up to Loy and shyly greets him with an awkward silence. Then, ‘Excuse me’, she says. ‘I’d just like to say that the band was awesome and you played really well.’ Loy was of course especially happy with the compliment. But the girl just continued standing there. After another lengthy pause, Loy asked if he could help her. She then finally works up the courage to speak and blushing, in a quiet voice says, ‘Can I have Sam’s number?’” Did she get it or not, we might never know. But be sure to catch The Other People and their vibrant performances across venues in the city. Add to that, their debut album releasing next week and this is one boy band that will be keeping audiences on their toes dancing and screaming for a long time to come. Ayesha Dominica

CAFÉ DELIGHT
11
Delighting Bandraites since 1952 NIGHTLIFE
Going Back to the Happy Days
Contrary to the tragic occurrence of the withering away of Irani joints in the rest of the city, Bandra is blessed to have a couple of unsung heroes. Leading the way is Café Delight which was started by Mr. Rustom Irani a resident of Mount Mary in the year 1952 on Hill road. Mr. Irani’s intention was to build a restaurant for the common man with an economical menu, and his intentions still live on. The menu imbibes the trademark bun maska, chai and kheema pav that has for decades been a staple, on the go meal for the commoner. This tradition has stood the test of time and the above mentioned grubs are still the showstoppers. Café Delight opens shop as early as 5:45 am, the opening hour adheres to a lifestyle that has become desolate. Mr. Nizam has been managing the restaurant for the past 35 years recalls a very different quiet and quaint Bandra. He recollects serving early church goers and their families when Hill road was and I quote “a secluded and quite road, which was not used by many pedestrians”. However the scenario has changed and at the current point in time he begins his day by serving breakfast to I.T. executives and over the weekends to revelers of a night out. From serving people who are
going to kick start their day; to serving a patron who is going to call it a day, Café Delight has not only witnessed the change and transformation of the place we call home, but has also witnessed the change in the lifestyle of the residents. Any eatery which is old enough to be a grandfather does not exist without a soul of its own and has its fair share of followers. Residents of Waroda road, Chapel road and other neighborhoods are loyalist and vouch for this place and what it stands for, but what is it that it stands for?. As I was pondering to get an answer to this rhetorical question walked in Mr. Leslie Pickardo a resident of Waroda road and a patron of Café Delight for the past 40 years. And while I observed his interaction with Mr. Nizam it struck me that this humble restaurant stands for friendship, memories, roots and most importantly a warm feeling of Bandra that once was and unfortunately never will be again, a tiny and cozy fisherman’s village. This month is all about our Independence. The 15th of August 1947 has a great significance for all Indians. True to our roots, wherever we are, we will all be celebrating our 69th Independence Day this year. Every year, we, the people of Free India celebrate the privilege of being independent with great joy and patriotism in our hearts. We all aspire for the good things in life: health, wealth, love, career, reputation, family, kids, friends, knowledge… the list goes on. This is all wonderful but at the very core, I believe, we desire respect and confidence. These two emotions have an effect on everything we do in life and it influences our level of independence. If we do not have confidence and respect for ourselves, how can we earn the same from others? We will not look for that amazing job, or even try to find the great guy/girl to share our life. We will not apply at the college of our dreams or take on anything that challenges us. Lack of confidence keeps us at a stand-still. Focus on what feeds your soul. When you find the job that makes you happy – do it! If you feel stuck, ask for guidance. Taking small steps will increase your confidence to take bigger steps. Warren, please clarify regarding the article in Mumbai Mirror on 11.8.15 “No country for old women, says senior citizen”
Warren Fernandes
I am being targeted because I am contesting Bandra Gymkhana elections to be held on 27.9.15. Pressure was put on the Police to include my name even though I was not present at the incident. I was not even in Bandra at that time.
1. My cousin Rowena Athavale’s police complaint dt. 11.6.15 does not allege that I assaulted her. She only alleged that I insulted her and asked her to leave when she went to my father’s house. 2. The Police have removed my name from the FIR on 5/8/2015 stating “Warren was not present at the incident” and the same has been confirmed by the Hon’ble Court. 3. My father, Allywn Fernandes, aged 84 years was alone on John Baptist Road on 10.6.15 when Rowena abused him and kept hitting him with her handbag. My father had already filed a police complaint against Rowena. 4. My father had given shelter to Rowena’s family in 1946. When he sold his property, Rowena demanded money, which was paid to her in 1997 and Consent Terms were signed. Rowena has continued to demand more money and harass my father since then. 5. In the CCTV footage captured immediately after the incident Rowena is seen walking normally without any injuries. 6. I have sent a legal notice for defamation to Mumbai Mirror and Rowena Athavale for giving wrong information & damaging my reputation.

“Germany is great place to study and live ... I am happy that I chose Germany over other countries for my Masters in Computer Science with full scholarship ….." writes Hitesh Mudaliar on his FB post ... a student recruited by Aliff Overseas Consultants to Germany for higher studies. For increasing number of Indians, Germany is emerging a favoured higher education destination overseas. There has been 114% increase in the number of Indian students enrolling for higher education courses there since 2008, according to the figures released by the regional office of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The number of students enrolled has increased from 3,516 in the 2008-09 academic year to 7,532 in 2012-13. Germany, which has the fifth biggest Indian student population on campuses, has sought to bridge the gap by introducing courses in English and easing visa norms to allow students to look for jobs there after completion of studies. Engineering courses were the chosen area of study for nearly half the number (close to 48%), followed by Mathematics and Natural Sciences (19.8%). Information Technology (13.8%), and Law, Economics and Social Sciences (9.4%) are the other

Tête-à-tête with Colston Julian
IN FOCUS
Some people prefer darker spaces, because they shine a unique light. And that’s what acclaimed photographer and now director, Colston Julian D’souza, does, behind every frame he captures.
Shooting Bandra Bandra has a culture and spaces all its own that lend themselves to the kind of visual aspect I look for when I shoot. I know the little streets, the discreet roads, tiny alleys, the dead ends. These areas work magic because of being less crowded and hence more full to capture a moment. They allow naturally for the street style that I have developed as a direction for my work. In many ways, it is away from the retouched look that has been around for a while. For me personally, the Bandra charm exists only as memories. It’s changed so much now. Also, when you know how to treat and approach people, without taking away from their lifestyle or harshly interrupting their schedule and respecting their homes, shops, and neighborhood, you get down to brass tacks, get your shot, and wrap up. I have shot and continue to shoot a lot on Chapel Road and streets around and I’ve experienced nothing but a warm welcome when I come looking to create images . Lights. Camera. Action. When it came to directing, it was a mantle I knew I would eventually take up. My base training is in film, as I studied cinematography. It was thus a very natural incline from cinematography to photography and now direction. Also, right now, given the digital content that’s out there, I don’t think there’s anything such as photos and film. I think you have to be comfortable in the total environment of it, I love working in both media and this steered my jump
into direction. Directing style The films I make would be very visual and have a strong style sense. I don’t think I have a comic sense or the timing to direct humour or storytelling, even though I think it would be interesting to make a stylized film with a storyline to it. But that too will come over time. My love for cinematography is immense. I love translating all this to my photos as well as my filmmaking. I tend to dislike happy, bright images. Right now, I’m into darker visuals, a darker mindset, a slower rhythm. What I am enjoying is the process. Direction or photography? My commitment is still toward photography and the visual design of it. I am looking at direction as an extension of my photography to a stylized space of moving images. I love my adventure sports background and I want to do films that revolve around active wear sports and fashion, because directing is second skin. Also, remember, it’s not about how you shoot it; it’s about what you want to make and where you are going with the story. The Jaipur Jewels film Directing the Jaipur Jewels film has been a

fulfilling experience. The biggest blessing was the client, through their forthcoming attitude and the freedom they gave me to shoot. It’s the only reason why, after turning them down thrice, I finally said yes, I’ll shoot! They had a vision that was pretty much in line with mine. I didn’t want a young, skinny model, as Jaipur Jewels is not a young trendy brand. We needed a connection with the mood and finding a girl to fit the brand. The story is about a strong woman and I have worked with Waluscha De Sousa a lot, over the past year or so and we work together seamlessly. This woman could only be her. She has worked really well for the campaign, as she is someone that has made that transition and is making a comeback. Not only is Waluscha a great actress, she is very strong herself and there is a definition to her as a woman. Her personality and character has thus defined the brand, the film space, the print space, and then translated into a great campaign as well. If you look at the film, it is from a darker perspective. It makes you wonder what’s going on. It defines the kind of woman, character, and personality in the film. She’s not a bubbly young girl but a woman of strength. She knows what she wants, who she is, and has her own vision and direction. The entire film revolves around the woman.
Working on the film We shot in Madhya Pradesh, a place I’m not really fond of due to its difficult environment. But we had huge crew strength and a fantastic team and what came of it finally is that I enjoyed the process of filmmaking and the seamless effort with which we shot, where no egos clashed or cross questioning occurred. The film releases on August 14 in PVR theatres across the country and what’s most exhilarating is that it’s not a TVC but a 1-minuter theatre film that has been shot to scale for the big screen through scaled up as well as very wide shots. Future focus It’s been a long-standing thought to work on a multimedia project on Bandra, as we are fast-losing its quintessence. People have moved, old bungalows have given way to steel, concrete and glass and the many nooks and crannies are losing their inherent charm. Commuting in the city intrigues me, especially areas like Bandra station. I might do an exhibition on urban commutation through subway and transit stations from Bombay to Tokyo to Paris, New York and more. I’d love to capture the little town squares like Ranwar and Chuim Village. In such a big urban sprawl, there are little spaces that remind you of what Bandra really was. There are spaces that in a few years may not exist anymore. I’d like to document and incorporate all of this into visuals, video, or cinemagraphs. (As told to Ayesha Dominica)

After hearing the delegation, the Collector issued a notice to the Khar Gymkhana. In view of this notice, the NCP requested an explanation from the Gym authorities. Since no explanation was given, the NCP informed the Gym authorities that there would be a preliminary morcha on 5th August from 5pm onwards, beginning from the Ambedkar statue and proceeding to the Khar Gymkhana Gate. GROSS VIOLATIONS: Since this Gymkhana is built on Collector’s Land, it needs to follow the lease guidelines. Some of the gross violations are: - Hosting Non-Sporting Commercial Events without permission and not paying the required govt. charges, as per an order passed in 2009 - Not producing any documents to confirm that the gymkhana was a registered body, under the Mumbai Public Trusts Act, 1950 - Certain areas of the Gymkhana building were given on rent as commercial centres, with political patronage. (We were told, that before the protest, all political placards were removed – implying
success of the morcha) - No nomination on the Managing Committee, of the District Collector / Commissioner has been made – as per a 2003 govt. resolution; by the Revenue & Forest Dept. - No application for renewal of the lease has been received by the District Collector’s Office, Bandra (E) - Parking Space and FSI Violations with creation of illegal tennis courts. PRELIMINARY PROTEST: As the time of ultimatum approached, the tension at Khar Gymkhana on the evening of 5th August was rising. After garlanding Dr. Ambedkar’s statue, near Candies, Pali Hill; NCP spokesperson Asif Bhamla joined his supporters and started the token protest march towards the main gate of Khar Gymkhana. Amidst slogan shouting and flags twirling, around 400 angry activists and protesters marched, amidst tight police security. The trustees met inside the Gymkhana to survey the situation. When they sent their manager to meet the NCP Group, it was rejected – as no one wanted to interact with a paid employee. Asif Bhamla categorically told him that the protesters would squat on the road – if need be, overnight; if the trustees or committee members did not come out and meet them. After all, they were told about the time and

date of the token protest. Then others joined in, to increase the demonstration to around 600 protesters; which included women, youth and the student wing. Asif Bhamla later told us, “This did not include the main NCP Office bearers.” Mr. Bhamla blocked the entire access to the Gym, by squatting on the road along with his followers, raising slogans – all amidst tight police bandobast, for at least 30 minutes, with many moments of tense interactions. Amidst clapping, the trustees and committee members finally came out of the Gym gates and humbly agreed to meet the protesters. This scene was something nobody ever imagined would happen. It was a trustee
and four managing committee members who met the NCP Protesters, led by Asif Bhamla. The list demands were presented to them. Watch the entire episode at: bandrabuzz.com/ncp.html The Gym management asked for some time – around a month to a maximum of forty days. It was made clear by the NCP (recently appointed as NCP District President of the entire Lok Sabha Constituency) spokesperson, Asif Bhamla; that, if they do not revert, a massive morcha would happen, which would include all District office bearers. This would be much more aggressive and action-oriented. On this successful note, the protesters dispersed. Ketan Shah
